| Глаго́ли Екклесіа́ста, си́на Дави́дова, царя́ Ізра́їлева во Ієрусали́мі. | The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king of Israel in Jerusalem. |
|

|
| Суєта́ су́єтствій, рече́ Екклесіа́ст, суєта́ су́єтствій, вся́чеськая суєта́. | Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. |
|

|
3
|
| Ко́є ізоби́ліє челові́ку во всем труді́ єго́, і́мже труди́ться под со́лнцем? | What advantage is there to a man in all his labour that he takes under the sun? |
|
4
|
4
|
| Род прехо́дить і род прихо́дить, а земля́ во вік стої́ть. | A generation goes, and a generation comes: but the earth stands for ever. |
|

|
5
|
| І восхо́дить со́лнце і захо́дить со́лнце і в мі́сто своє́ влече́ться, сіє́ возсіява́я та́мо. | And the sun arises, and the sun goes down and draws toward its place; |
|

|
| І́деть к ю́гу і обхо́дить к сі́веру, обхо́дить о́крест, і́деть дух і на кру́ги своя́ обраща́ється дух. | arising there it proceeds southward, and goes round toward the north. The wind goes round and round, and the wind returns to its circuits. |
|

|
| Всі пото́ци і́дуть в мо́ре, і мо́ре ність насища́ємо; на мі́сто, а́може пото́ци і́дуть, та́мо ті́ї возвраща́ються іти́. | All the rivers run into the sea; and yet the sea is not filled: to the place whence the rivers come, thither they return again. |

| Вся словеса́ тру́дна, не возмо́жеть муж глаго́лати; і не наси́титься о́ко зрі́ти, ні іспо́лниться у́хо сли́шанія. | All things are full of labour; a man will not be able to speak of them: neither shall the eye be satisfied with seeing, neither shall the ear be filled with hearing. |

| Что би́ло, то́жде єсть, є́же бу́деть; і что би́ло сотворе́ноє, то́жде і́мать сотвори́тися; | What is that which has been? the very thing which shall be: and what is that which has been done? the very thing which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. |
|

|
| і нічто́же но́во под со́лнцем. І́же возглаго́леть і рече́ть: се сіє́ но́во єсть; уже́ бисть в ві́ціх би́вших пре́жде нас. | Who is he that shall speak and say, Behold, this is new? it has already been in the ages that have passed before us. |
|

| Ність па́м'ять пе́рвих, і послі́днім би́вшим не бу́деть їх па́м'ять с бу́дущими на послі́док. | There is no memorial to the first things; neither to the things that have been last shall their memorial be with them that shall be at the last time. |
|

|
| Аз, Екклесіа́ст, бих цар над Ізра́їлем во Ієрусали́мі | I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. |
|

|
13
|
| і вдах се́рдце моє́, є́же взиска́ти і разсмотри́ти в му́дрості о всіх бива́ющих под небесе́м; я́ко попече́ніє лука́во даде́ Бог сино́м челові́чеським, є́же упраждня́тися в нем. | And I applied my heart to seek out and examine by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, for God has given to the sons of men an evil trouble to be troubled therewith. |

| Ви́діх вся́чеськая сотворе́нія сотворе́нная под со́лнцем; і се вся су́єтство і проізволе́ніє ду́ха. | I beheld all the works that were wrought under the sun; and, behold, all were vanity and waywardness of spirit. |
|

|
| Развраще́нноє не мо́жеть іспра́витися, і лише́ніє не мо́жеть ізчи́слитися. | That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and deficiency cannot be numbered. |
|

|
| Глаго́лах аз в се́рдці моє́м, є́же рещи́: се аз возвели́чихся і умно́жих му́дрость па́че всіх, і́же би́ша пре́жде мене́ во Ієрусали́мі, | I spoke in my heart, saying, Behold, I am increased, and have acquired wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem: also I applied my heart to know wisdom and knowledge. |

| і се́рдце моє́ вдах, є́же ві́діти прему́дрость і ра́зум; і се́рдце моє́ ви́ді мно́гая, прему́дрость і ра́зум, при́тчі і хи́трость; уразумі́х аз, я́ко і сіє́ єсть проізволе́ніє ду́ха; | And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit. |

| я́ко во мно́жестві му́дрости мно́жество ра́зума, і приложи́вий ра́зум приложи́ть болі́знь. | For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow. |
|

| Реко́х аз в се́рдці моє́м: прийди́ у́бо, да тя іскушу́ в весе́лії, і виждь во бла́зі; і се тако́жде сіє́ су́єтство. | I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth, and behold thou good: and, behold, this is also vanity. |

| Смі́ху реко́х: погріше́ніє, і весе́лію: что сіє́ твори́ши? | I said to laughter, Madness: and to mirth, Why doest thou this? |
|

| І разсмотри́х, а́ще се́рдце моє́ повлече́ть а́ки вино́ плоть мою́, і се́рдце моє́ наста́ви м'я в му́дрості, і є́же удержа́ти весе́ліє, до́ндеже уви́жду, ко́є бла́го сино́м челові́чеським, є́же творя́ть под со́лнцем в число́ дній живота́ своєго́. | And I examined whether my heart would excite my flesh as with wine, (though my heart guided me in wisdom,) and I desired to lay hold of mirth, until I should see of what kind is the good to the sons of men, which they should do under the sun all the days of their life. |

| Возвели́чих творе́ніє моє́: созда́х мі до́ми, насади́х мі віногра́ди, | I enlarged my work; I built me houses; I planted me vineyards. |
|

| сотвори́х мі вертогра́ди і сади́ і насади́х в них древе́с вся́каго плода́, | I made me gardens and orchards, and planted in them every kind of fruit-tree. |
|

|
| сотвори́х мі купі́лі водни́я, є́же напая́ти от них прозябе́ніє древе́с; | I made me pools of water, to water from them the timber-bearing wood. |
|

|

|
| притяжа́х раби́ і раби́ні, і домоча́дці би́ша мі; і стяжа́ніє скота́, і стад мно́го мі бисть, па́че всіх би́вших пре́жде мене́ во Ієрусали́мі; | I got servants and maidens, and servants were born to me in the house: also I had abundant possession of flocks and herds, beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem. |

| собра́х мі зла́то і сребро́ і імі́нія царе́й і стран, сотвори́х мі пою́щих і пою́щия, і услажде́нія сино́в челові́чеських, виноче́рпці і виноче́рпиці. | Moreover I collected for myself both silver and gold also, and the peculiar treasures of kings and provinces: I procured me singing men and singing women, and delights of the sons of men, a butler and female cupbearers. |

| І возвели́чихся, і приложи́хся му́дрості па́че всіх би́вших пре́жде мене́ во Ієрусали́мі; і му́дрость моя́ преби́сть со мно́ю. | So I became great, and advanced beyond all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom was established to me. |
|

| І все, єго́же проси́ста о́чі мої́, не от'я́х от них і не возбрани́х се́рдцю моєму́ от вся́каго весе́лія моєго́, я́ко се́рдце моє́ возвесели́ся во вся́цім труді́ моє́м. І сіє́ бисть часть моя́ от всего́ труда́ моєго́. | And whatever mine eyes desired, I withheld not from them, I withheld not my heart from all my mirth: for my heart rejoiced in all my labour; and this was my portion of all my labour. |

| І призрі́х аз на вся творе́нія моя́, я́же сотвори́сті ру́ці мої́, і на труд, і́мже труди́хся твори́ти. І се, вся суєта́ і проізволе́ніє ду́ха, і ність ізоби́ліє под со́лнцем. | And I looked on all my works which my hands had wrought, and on my labour which I laboured to perform: and, behold, all was vanity and waywardness of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun. |

| І призрі́х аз ви́діти му́дрость, лесть і безу́міє; я́ко кто челові́к, і́же по́йдеть вслід сові́та, єли́ка сотвори́ в нем? | Then I looked on to see wisdom, and madness, and folly: for who is the man who will follow after counsel, in all things wherein he employs it? |

| І ви́діх аз, я́ко єсть ізоби́ліє му́дрости па́че безу́мія, я́коже ізоби́ліє сві́та па́че тьми; | And I saw that wisdom excels folly, as much as light excels darkness. |
|

|
| му́драго о́чі єго́ во главі́ єго́, а безу́мний во тьмі хо́дить; і уві́діх і аз, я́ко слу́чай єди́н случи́ться всім їм. | The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walks in darkness: and I perceived, even I, that one event shall happen to them all. |

| І ріх аз в се́рдці моє́м: я́коже слу́чай безу́мнаго і мні случи́ться: і вску́ю умудри́хся? Аз тогда́ ізли́шше глаго́лах в се́рдці моє́м, я́ко і сіє́ суєта́, поне́же безу́мний от ізби́тка глаго́леть. | And I said in my heart, As the event of the fool is, so shall it be to me, even to me; and to what purpose have I gained wisdom? I said moreover in my heart, This is also vanity, because the fool speaks of his abundance. |

| Я́ко ність па́м'яті му́драго с безу́мним во вік, зане́ уже́ во днех гряду́щих вся забве́на би́ша; і ка́ко у́мреть му́дрий с безу́мним? | For there is no remembrance of the wise man with the fool for ever; forasmuch as now in the coming days all things are forgotten: and how shall the wise man die with the fool? |

| І возненави́діх живо́т, я́ко лука́вно мні сотворе́ніє сотворе́нноє под со́лнцем, поне́же вся́чеськая суєта́ і проізволе́ніє ду́ха. | So I hated life; because the work that was wrought under the sun was evil before me: for all is vanity and waywardness of spirit. |

| І возненави́діх аз вся́чеськая ми́ра і труд мой, і́мже аз тружда́юся под со́лнцем, я́ко оставля́ю єго́ челові́ку бу́дущему по мні. | And I hated the whole of my labour which I took under the sun; because I must leave it to the man who will come after me. |
|

| І кто вість, мудр ли бу́деть іли́ безу́мен? І облада́ти ли і́мать всім трудо́м мої́м, і́мже труди́хся і і́мже му́дрствовах под со́лнцем? І сіє́ же суєта́. | And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? and whether he will have power over all my labour in which I laboured, and wherein I grew wise under the sun? this is also vanity. |

| І обрати́хся аз отрещи́ся се́рдцю моєму́ о всем труді́, і́мже труди́хся под со́лнцем. | So I went about to dismiss from my heart all my labour wherein I had laboured under the sun. |
|

| я́ко єсть челові́к, єго́же труд в му́дрості і в ра́зумі і в му́жестві, і челові́к, і́же не потруди́ся о нем, дасть єму́ часть свою́. І сіє́ суєта́ і лука́вство ве́ліє. | For there is such a man that his labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in fortitude; yet this man shall give his portion to one who has not laboured therein. This is also vanity and great evil. |

| Я́ко бива́єть челові́ку во всем труді́ єго́ і в проізволе́нії се́рдця єго́, і́мже той тружда́ється под со́лнцем, | For it happens to a man in all his labour, and in the purpose of his heart wherein he labours under the sun. |
|

| я́ко всі дні́є єго́ болі́зней і я́рости попече́ніє єму́, і́бо в нощі́ не спить се́рдце єго́. І сіє́ же суєта́ єсть. | For all his days are days of sorrows, and vexation of spirit is his; in the night also his heart rests not. This is also vanity. |
|

| Ність бла́го челові́ку, но (ра́зві) є́же ясть і піє́ть і є́же пока́жеть душі́ своє́й бла́го в труді́ своє́м. І сіє́ ви́діх аз, я́ко от руки́ Бо́жия єсть. | A man has nothing really good to eat, and to drink, and to shew his soul as good in his trouble. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. |

| я́ко кто ясть і піє́ть кромі́ Єго́? | For who shall eat, or who shall drink, without him? |
|

| Я́ко челові́ку бла́гу пред лице́м Єго́ даде́ му́дрость і ра́зум і весе́ліє, согріша́ющему же даде́ попече́ніє, є́же прилага́ти і собира́ти, во є́же да́ти благо́му пред лице́м Бо́жиїм. Я́ко і сіє́ суєта́ і проізволе́ніє ду́ха. | For God has given to the man who is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but he has given to the sinner trouble, to add and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God; for this is also vanity and waywardness of spirit. |

| Всім вре́м'я і вре́м'я вся́цій ве́щі под небесе́м. | To all things there is a time, and a season for every matter under heaven. |
|

|
| Вре́м'я ражда́ти і вре́м'я умира́ти, вре́м'я сади́ти і вре́м'я історга́ти сажде́ноє, | A time of birth, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what has been planted; |
|

|
3
|
| вре́м'я убива́ти і вре́м'я ціли́ти, вре́м'я разруша́ти і вре́м'я созида́ти, | a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to pull down, and a time to build up; |
|

|
4
|
| вре́м'я пла́кати і вре́м'я смія́тися, вре́м'я рида́ти і вре́м'я ликова́ти, | a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to lament, and a time to dance; |
|

|

|
| вре́м'я размета́ти ка́меніє і вре́м'я собира́ти ка́меніє, вре́м'я обима́ти і вре́м'я удаля́тися от обима́нія, | a time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to abstain from embracing; |
|

|
| вре́м'я іска́ти і вре́м'я погубля́ти, вре́м'я храни́ти і вре́м'я отрі́яти, | a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; |
|

|

|
| вре́м'я раздра́ти і вре́м'я сши́ти, вре́м'я молча́ти і вре́м'я глаго́лати, | a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak; |
|

|
8
|
| вре́м'я люби́ти і вре́м'я ненави́діти, вре́м'я бра́ні і вре́м'я ми́ра. | a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. |
|

|
9
|
| Ко́є ізоби́ліє творя́щаго, в ни́хже сам труди́ться? | What advantage has he that works in those things wherein he labours? |
|

|

|
| Ви́діх попече́ніє вся́чеськоє, є́же даде́ Бог сино́м челові́чеським, є́же пещи́ся в нем. | I have seen all the trouble, which God has given to the sons of men to be troubled with. |
|

|
| Вся́чеськая, я́же сотвори́, добра́ (суть) во вре́м'я своє́, і́бо вся́кий вік дал єсть в се́рдце їх, я́ко да не обря́щеть челові́к сотворе́нія, є́же сотвори́ Бог от нача́ла і да́же до конця́. | All the things which he has made are beautiful in his time: he has also set the whole world in their heart, that man might not find out the work which God has wrought from the beginning even to the end. |

| Уразумі́х, я́ко ність бла́го в них, но то́кмо є́же весели́тися і є́же твори́ти бла́го в животі́ своє́м. | I know that there is no good in them, except for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life. |
|

|

|
| І́бо всяк челові́к, і́же ясть і піє́ть і ви́дить благо́є во всем труді́ своє́м, сіє́ дая́ніє Бо́жиє єсть. | Also in the case of every man who shall eat and drink, and see good in all his labour, this is a gift of God. |
|

|

|
| Разумі́х, я́ко вся, єли́ка сотвори́ Бог, сія́ бу́дуть во вік. К тім ність приложи́ти і от тіх ність от’я́ти, і Бог сотвори́, да убоя́ться от лиця́ Єго́. | I know that whatsoever things God has done, they shall be for ever: it is impossible to add to it, and it is impossible to take away from it: and God has done it, that men may fear before him. |

| Би́вшеє уже́ єсть, і єли́ка і́муть би́ти, уже́ би́ша, і Бог взи́щеть гони́маго. | That which has been is now; and whatever things are appointed to be have already been; and God will seek out that which is past. |
|

|
| І єще́ ви́діх под со́лнцем мі́сто суда́, та́мо нечести́вий, і мі́сто пра́веднаго, та́мо благочести́вий. | And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, there was the ungodly one; and the place of righteousness, there was the godly one. |
|

|
17
|
| І ріх аз в се́рдці моє́м: пра́веднаго і нечести́ваго су́дить Бог, я́ко вре́м'я вся́цій ве́щі і на вся́цім сотворе́нії та́мо. | And I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the ungodly: for there is a time there for every action and for every work. |

| Ріх аз в се́рдці моє́м о глаго́ланії сино́в челові́чеських, я́ко разсу́дить їх Бог, і є́же показа́ти, я́ко сі́ї ско́ти суть. | I said in my heart, concerning the speech of the sons of man, God will judge them, and that to shew that they are beasts. |

| І́бо і тім я́коже слу́чай сино́в челові́чеських і слу́чай ско́тський, слу́чай єди́н їм. Я́коже смерть того́, та́ко і смерть сего́, і дух єди́н во всіх. І что ізли́шше і́мать челові́к па́че скота́? Нічто́же, я́ко вся́чеськая суєта́. | Also to them is the event of the sons of man, and the event of the brute; one event befalls them: as is the death of the one, so also the death of the other; and there is one breath to all: and what has the man more than the brute? nothing; for all is vanity. |

| Вся і́дуть во єди́но мі́сто. Вся би́ша от пе́рсти і вся в персть возвраща́ються. | All go to one place; all were formed of the dust, and all will return to dust. |
|

|
| І кто вість дух сино́в челові́чеських, а́ще той восхо́дить горі́, і дух ско́тський, а́ще низхо́дить той до́лу в зе́млю? | And who has seen the spirit of the sons of man, whether it goes upward? and the spirit of the beast, whether it goes downward to the earth? |

| І ви́діх, я́ко ність бла́го, но то́кмо є́же возвесели́ться челові́к в творе́ніїх свої́х, я́ко сія́ часть єго́. Поне́же кто приведе́ть єго́ ви́діти то, є́же бу́деть по нем? | And I saw that there was no good, but that wherein a man shall rejoice in his works, for it is his portion, for who shall bring him to see any thing of that which shall be after him? |

Chapter 4

|
| І обрати́хся аз і ви́діх вся оклевета́нія бива́ющая под со́лнцем. І се сле́зи оклевета́нних, і ність їм утіша́ющаго, і от руки́ клеве́щущих на ня крі́пость, і ність їм утіша́ющаго. | So I returned, and saw all the oppressions that were done under the sun: and behold the tear of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of them that oppressed them was power; but they had no comforter: |

| І похвали́х аз всіх уме́рших, і́же умро́ша уже́, па́че живи́х, єли́ці жи́ви суть досе́лі. | and I praised all the dead that had already died more than the living, as many as are alive until now. |
|

|
| І благ па́че обої́х сих, і́же єще́ не бисть, і́же не ви́ді вся́каго сотворе́нія лука́ваго сотворе́ннаго под со́лнцем. | Better also than both these is he who has not yet been, who has not seen all the evil work that is done under the sun. |
|

|
4
|
| І ви́діх аз весь труд і вся́ко му́жество сотворе́нія, я́ко сіє́ ре́вность му́жа от по́друга своєго́. І сіє́ суєта́ і проізволе́ніє ду́ха. | And I saw all labour, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbour. This is also vanity and waywardness of spirit. |

| Безу́мний об'я́т ру́ці свої́ і сніде́ пло́ті своя́. | The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh. |
|

|

|
| Бла́го єсть ісполне́ніє го́рсти поко́я, па́че ісполне́нія двою́ го́рстію труда́ і произволе́нія ду́ха. | Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of trouble and waywardness of spirit. |
|

|
| І обрати́хся аз і ви́діх су́єтство под со́лнцем. | So I returned, and saw vanity under the sun. |
|

|
8
|
| Єсть єди́н, і ність втора́го, ні си́на, ніже́ бра́та ність єму́, і ність конця́ всему́ труду́ єго́, ніже́ о́ко єго́ насища́ється бога́тства. І кому́ аз тружда́юся і лиша́ю ду́шу мою́ от благости́ні? І сіє́ суєта́ і попече́ніє лука́вно єсть. | There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he has neither son nor brother: yet there is no end to all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with wealth; and for whom do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? this is also vanity, and an evil trouble. |

| Бла́зі два па́че єди́наго, ї́мже єсть мзда бла́га в труді́ їх. | Two are better than one, seeing they have a good reward for their labour. |
|

|
| Я́ко а́ще паде́ться єди́н от них, воздви́гнеть други́й прича́стника своєго́, і го́ре тому́ єди́ному, єгда́ паде́ть і не бу́деть втора́го воздви́гнути єго́. | For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls, and there is not a second to lift him up. |

| І а́ще у́снета два, тепло́ ї́ма бу́деть, а єди́н ка́ко согрі́ється? | Also if two should lie together, they also get heat: but how shall one be warmed alone? |
|

|
| І а́ще укріпи́ться єди́н, два ста́нета проти́ву єму́, і вервь треплете́на не ско́ро расто́ргнеться. | And if one should prevail against him, the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord shall not be quickly broken. |
|

|
| Благ о́трок нищ і мудр, па́че ста́ра царя́ і безу́мна, і́же не разумі́ внима́ти єще́. | Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who knows not how to take heed any longer. |
|

|

|
| Я́ко із до́му ю́зников ізи́деть ца́рствовати, поне́же і в ца́рстві своє́м роди́ся нищ. | For he shall come forth out of the house of the prisoners to reign, because he also that was in his kingdom has become poor. |
|

|

|
| Ви́діх всіх живу́щих, ходя́щих под со́лнцем, с ю́ним втори́м, і́же воста́неть вмі́сто єго́. | I beheld all the living who were walking under the sun, with the second youth who shall stand up in each one's place. |
|

|
16
|
| Ність конця́ всім лю́дем, всім, і́же пред ни́ми би́ша, і́бо послі́днії не возвеселя́ться о нем, я́ко і сіє́ суєта́ і проізволе́ніє ду́ха. | There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them: and the last shall not rejoice in him: for this also is vanity and waywardness of spirit. |

| Сохрани́ но́гу твою́, єгда́ а́ще і́деши в дом Бо́жий, і близ (бу́ди) є́же слу́шати. Я́ко Бог на небесі́ горі́, ти же на землі́ до́лу, сего́ ра́ди да бу́дуть словеса́ твоя́ ма́ла. | Be not hasty with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be swift to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven above, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. |

| Я́ко прихо́дить со́ніє во мно́жестві попече́нія, та́ко і глас безу́мнаго во мно́жестві слове́с. | For through the multitude of trial a dream comes; and a fool's voice is with a multitude of words. |

| А́ще обіща́єши обі́т Бо́гу, не уме́дли отда́ти єго́. Я́ко ність хоті́нія в безу́мних, ти у́бо, єли́ка а́ще обіща́єши, отда́ждь. | Whenever thou shalt vow a vow to God, defer not to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools: pay thou therefore whatsoever thou shalt have vowed. |

| Бла́го тебі́ є́же не обіщава́тися, не́жели обіща́вшуся тебі́, не отда́ти. | It is better that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. |

| Не даждь устна́м твої́м є́же во гріх ввести́ плоть твою́, і да не рече́ши пред лице́м Бо́жиїм, я́ко неві́дініє єсть, да не прогні́вається Бог о гла́сі твоє́м і растли́ть творе́нія рук твої́х. | Suffer not thy mouth to lead thy flesh to sin; and say not in the presence of God, It was an error: lest God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the works of thy hands. |

| Я́ко во мно́жестві со́ній і су́єтствія, (та́ко) і словеса́ мно́га, ті́мже Бо́га бо́йся. | For there is evil in a multitude of dreams and vanities and many words: but fear thou God. |
|

| А́ще оби́ду ни́щаго і расхище́ніє суда́ і пра́вди уви́диши во страні́, не диви́ся о ве́щі. Я́ко висо́кий над висо́ким надзира́тель, і висо́ції над ни́ми, | If thou shouldest see the oppression of the poor, and the wresting of judgment and of justice in the land, wonder not at the matter: for there is a high one to watch over him that is high, and high ones over them. |

| і ізоби́ліє землі́ над всім єсть цар села́ возді́ланна. | Also the abundance of the earth is for every one: the king is dependent on the tilled field. |

| Люб'я́й сребро́ не наси́титься сребра́. І кто наслади́ться во мно́жестві єго́ плода́? І сіє́ суєта́. | He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver: and who has loved gain, in the abundance thereof? this is also vanity. |

| Во мно́жестві бла́га умно́жишася яду́щії є. І ко́є му́жество іму́щему є? Я́ко нача́ло є́же ви́діти очи́ма свої́ма. | In the multitude of good they are increased that eat it: and what virtue has the owner, but the right of beholding it with his eyes? |

| Сон сла́док рабо́тающему, а́ще ма́ло іли́ мно́го сність. А наси́тившагося бога́тство не оставля́єть усну́ти. | The sleep of a servant is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but to one who is satiated with wealth, there is none that suffers him to sleep. |

| Єсть неду́г, єго́же ви́діх под со́лнцем, бога́тство храни́мо от стяжа́теля во зло єму́, | There is an infirmity which I have seen under the sun, namely, wealth kept for its owner to his hurt. |

| і поги́бнеть бога́тство о́но в попече́нії лука́вні, і роди́ си́на, і ність в руці́ єго́ нічто́же. | And that wealth shall perish in an evil trouble: and the man begets a son, and there is nothing in his hand. |

|
| Я́коже ізи́де із чре́ва ма́тере своєя́ наг, возврати́ться іти́, я́коже і при́йде, і нічто́же во́зьметь от труда́ своєго́, да понесе́ть в руці́ своє́й. | As he came forth naked from his mother's womb, he shall return back as he came, and he shall receive nothing for his labour, that it should go with him in his hand. |

| І сіє́ зол неду́г. Я́коже бо при́йде, та́ко і оти́деть, і ка́я по́льза єму́, я́ко труди́ться на вітр? | And this is also an evil infirmity: for as he came, so also shall he return: and what is his gain, for which he vainly labours? |
|

|
| І́бо всі дні́є єго́ во тьмі і пла́чі і в я́рості мно́зі, і в неду́зі і во гні́ві. | Yea, all his days are in darkness, and in mourning, and much sorrow, and infirmity, and wrath. |

| Се, ви́діх аз благо́є, є́же єсть ізря́дно, є́же я́сти і пи́ти і ви́діти благости́ню во всем труді́ своє́м, і́мже труди́лся би под со́лнцем, в число́ дній живота́ своєго́, я́же дал єсть єму́ Бог, я́ко сіє́ часть єго́. | Behold, I have seen good, that it is a fine thing for a man to eat and to drink, and to see good in all his labour in which he may labour under the sun, all the number of the days of his life which God has given to him: for it is his portion. |

| і́бо вся́кому челові́ку, єму́же дал єсть Бог бога́тство і імі́нія, і власть даде́ єму́ я́сти от того́ і прия́ти часть свою́ і возвесели́тися о труді́ своє́м, сіє́ дар Бо́жий єсть. | Yea, and as for every man to whom God has given wealth and possessions, and has given him power to eat thereof, and to receive his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. |

| Єсть лука́вствіє, є́же ви́діх под со́лнцем, і мно́го єсть над челові́ком. | There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is abundant with man: |

| Муж, єму́же дасть Бог бога́тство і імі́ніє і сла́ву, і ність лиша́яй душі́ своє́й от всіх, ї́хже вожделі́єть, і не дасть єму́ Бог вла́сти от него́ я́сти, я́ко чуждь муж я́сти і́мать от него́. І сіє́ суєта́ і неду́г зол єсть. | a man to whom God shall give wealth, and substance, and honour, and he wants nothing for his soul of all things that he shall desire, yet God shall not give him power to eat of it, for a stranger shall devour it: this is vanity, and an evil infirmity. |

| А́ще роди́ть муж сто (чад) і лі́та мно́га поживе́ть, і мно́зі бу́дуть дні́є літ єго́, і душа́ єго́ не наси́титься от благости́ні, і погребе́нія не бисть єму́, ріх: благ па́че єго́ і́зверг, | If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, yea, however abundant the days of his years shall be, yet if his soul shall not be satisfied with good, and also he have no burial; I said, An untimely birth is better than he. |

| я́ко в суєті́ при́йде і во тьму і́деть, і во тьмі і́м'я єго́ покри́ється, | For he came in vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall be covered in darkness. |

| і со́лнця не ви́ді, ніже́ разумі́, поко́й сему́ па́че того́. | Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known rest: there is no more rest to this one than another. |

|
| І поживе́ ти́сящу літ сугу́бо, і благости́ні не ви́ді, єда́ не во єди́но мі́сто вся і́дуть? | Though he has lived to the return of a thousand years, yet he has seen no good: do not all go to one place? |
|

| Весь труд челові́ч во уста́ єго́, і душа́ єго́ не іспо́лниться. | All the labour of a man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite shall not be satisfied. |
|

| Я́ко ко́є ізоби́ліє (челові́ку) му́дрому па́че безу́мнаго? Поне́же нищ позна́ ходи́ти проти́ву живота́. | For what advantage has the wise man over the fool, since even the poor knows how to walk in the direction of life? |

| Бла́го виді́ніє о́чію па́че ходя́щаго душе́ю. І се су́єтствіє і проізволе́ніє ду́ха. | The sight of the eyes is better than that which wanders in soul: this is also vanity, and waywardness of spirit. |

| А́ще что бисть, уже́ іменова́ся і́м'я єго́, і позна́ся, є́же єсть челові́к і не возмо́жеть суди́тися с кріпча́йшим па́че себе́. | If anything has been, its name has already been called: and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him who is stronger than he. |

| Что ізли́шше челові́ку, я́ко кто вість, что бла́го челові́ку в животі́ (єго́) число́ дній живота́ су́єтства єго́? І сотвори́ я в сі́ні. Я́ко кто возвісти́ть челові́ку, что бу́деть по нем под со́лнцем? | A good name is better than good oil; and the day of death than the day of birth. |

| Бла́го і́м'я па́че єле́я бла́га, і день сме́ртний па́че дня рожде́нія єго́. | It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the banquet house: since this is the end of every man; and the living man will apply good warning to his heart. |

| Бла́го ходи́ти в дом пла́ча, не́жели ходи́ти в дом пи́ра, поне́же сіє́ коне́ць вся́кому челові́ку, і живи́й дасть бла́го в се́рдці єго́. | Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart will be made better. |

| Бла́га я́рость па́че смі́ха, я́ко во зло́бі лиця́ ублажи́ться се́рдце. | The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. |

| Се́рдце му́дрих в дому́ пла́ча, а се́рдце безу́мних в дому́ весе́лія. | It is better to hear a reproof of a wise man, than for a man to hear the song of fools. |

| Бла́го є́же сли́шати преще́ніє прему́дра, па́че му́жа сли́шащаго піснь безу́мних. | As the sound of thorns under a caldron, so is the laughter of fools: this is also vanity. |

| Я́коже глас те́рнія под котло́м, та́ко сміх безу́мних. І сіє́ суєта́. | For oppression makes a wise man mad, and destroys his noble heart. |
|

|
| Я́ко клевета́ льстить му́драго і погубля́єть се́рдце благоро́дствія єго́. | The end of a matter is better than the beginning thereof: the patient is better than the high-minded. |
|

|
| Бла́га послі́дняя слове́с па́че нача́ла єго́, благ терпіли́вий па́че висо́каго ду́хом. | Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger will rest in the bosom of fools. |
|

| Не тщи́ся в ду́сі своє́м яри́тися, я́ко я́рость в ні́дрі безу́мних почи́єть. | Say not, What has happened, that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire in wisdom concerning this. |

| Да не рече́ши: что бисть, я́ко дні́є пре́жднії бі́ша бла́зі па́че сих? Я́ко не в му́дрості вопроси́л єси́ о сем. | Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and there is an advantage by it to them that see the sun. |

|
| Бла́га му́дрость с наслі́дієм, па́че же ви́дящим со́лнце. | For wisdom in its shadow is as the shadow of silver: and the excellence of the knowledge of wisdom will give life to him that has it. |
|

|
| Я́ко в сі́ні єго́ му́дрость, я́коже сінь сребра́, і ізоби́ліє ра́зума прему́дрости оживля́єть, і́же от нея́. | Behold the works of God: for who shall be able to straighten him whom God has made crooked? |

| Виждь творе́нія Бо́жія: я́ко кто мо́жеть украси́ти, єго́же а́ще Бог преврати́ть? | In the day of prosperity live joyfully, and consider in the day of adversity: consider, I say, God also has caused the one to agree with the other for this reason, that man should find nothing after him. |

| В день благости́ні (Єго́) живи́ во бла́зі і виждь в день зла. Виждь, і с ним согла́сно сіє́ сотвори́ Бог, о глаго́ланії, да не обря́щеть челові́к за Ним нічто́же. | I have seen all things in the days of my vanity: there is a just man perishing in his justice, and there is an ungodly man remaining in his wickedness. |

| Вся́чеськая ви́діх во днех су́єтствія моєго́. Єсть пра́ведний погиба́яй во своє́й пра́вді, і єсть нечести́вий пребива́яй во своє́й зло́бі. | Be not very just; neither be very wise: lest thou be confounded. |

| Не бу́ди правди́в вельми́, ні мудри́ся ізли́шше, да не когда́ ізуми́шися. | Be not very wicked; and be not stubborn: lest thou shouldest die before thy time. |

| Не нече́ствуй мно́го і не бу́ди же́сток, да не у́мреши не во вре́м'я своє́. | It is well for thee to hold fast by this; also by this defile not thine hand: for to them that fear God all things shall come forth well. |

| Бла́го ті єсть держа́тися сего́, і от сего́ не оскверни́ руки́ твоєя́, я́ко боя́щимся Бо́га поспіша́ться вся. | Wisdom will help the wise man more than ten mighty men which are in the city. |

| Прему́дрость помо́жеть му́дрому па́че десяти́ облада́ющих во гра́ді. | For there is not a righteous man in the earth, who will do good, and not sin. |
|

| Я́ко ність челові́к пра́веден на землі́, і́же сотвори́ть благо́є і не согріши́ть. | Also take no heed to all the words which ungodly men shall speak; lest thou hear thy servant cursing thee. |

| І во вся словеса́, я́же возглаго́лють нечести́вії, не вложи́ се́рдця своєго́, да не усли́шиши раба́ своєго́ клену́ща тебе́, | For many times he shall trespass against thee, and repeatedly shall he afflict thine heart; for thus also hast thou cursed others. |

| я́ко мно́гажди возлука́внуєть на тя, і обхожде́нії мно́гими озло́бить се́рдце твоє́, я́коже і ти клял єси́ іни́я (мно́гія). | All these things have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. |

| Вся сія́ іскуси́х в му́дрості. Ріх: умудрю́ся, і сія́ удали́ся от мене́ | That which is far beyond what was, and a great depth, who shall find it out? |

| дале́че па́че не́же біх, і бе́здни глубина́, кто обря́щеть ю? | I and my heart went round about to know, and to examine, and to seek wisdom, and the account of things, and to know the folly and trouble and madness of the ungodly man. |

| Обидо́х аз, і се́рдце моє́, є́же разумі́ти, є́же разсмотри́ти, і є́же взиска́ти му́дрость і ра́зум, і є́же разумі́ти нечести́ваго безу́міє і ожесточе́ніє і лесть. | And I find her to be, and I will pronounce to be more bitter than death the woman which is a snare, and her heart nets, who has a band in her hands: he that is good in the sight of God shall be delivered from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her. |

| І обріто́х аз ю, і реку́ горча́йшу па́че сме́рти жену́, я́же єсть лови́тва, і сі́ті се́рдце єя́, у́зи в руку́ єя́. Благи́й пред лице́м Бо́жиїм ізи́меться от нея́, а согріша́яй ят бу́деть от нея́. | Behold, this have I found, said the Preacher, seeking by one at a time to find out the account, |

| Се, сіє́ обріто́х, рече́ Екклесіа́ст, єди́ну єди́ною є́же обрісти́ по́мисл, є́же взиска́ душа́ моя́, і не обріто́х. | which my soul sought after, but I found not: for I have found one man of a thousand; but a woman in all these I have not found. |

| І челові́ка єди́наго от ти́сящ обріто́х, а жени́ во всіх сих не обріто́х. | But, behold, this have I found, that God made man upright; but they have sought out many devices. Who knows the wise? and who knows the interpretation of a saying? |

| Му́дрость челові́ка просвіти́ть лице́ єго́, а безсту́дний возненави́дін бу́деть лице́м свої́м. | A man's wisdom will lighten his countenance; but a man of shameless countenance will be hated. |

| Уста́ царе́ва сохрани́, і о словесі́ кля́тви Бо́жия не скор бу́ди. | Observe the commandment of the king, and that because of the word of the oath of God. |

| От лиця́ єго́ по́йдеши, не ста́ни во словесі́ лука́вні, я́ко все, є́же (а́ще) восхо́щеть, сотвори́ть, | Be not hasty; thou shalt go forth out of his presence: stand not in an evil matter; for he will do whatsoever he shall please, |

| я́коже цар облада́яй, і кто рече́ть єму́: что твори́ши? | even as a king having power: and who will say to him, What doest thou? |

| Храня́й за́повідь не уві́сть глаго́ла лука́вна, і вре́м'я суда́ вість се́рдце му́драго, | He that keeps the commandment shall not know an evil thing: and the heart of the wise knows the time of judgment. |

| я́ко вся́цій ве́щі єсть вре́м'я і суд, я́ко ра́зум челові́ка мног (єсть) на нем, | For to every thing there is time and judgment; for the knowledge of a man is great to him. |

| я́ко ність ві́дящаго, что бу́дущеє, зане́ я́коже бу́деть, кто возвісти́ть єму́? | For there is no one that knows what is going to be: for who shall tell him how it shall be? |

|
| Ність челові́ка владу́щаго ду́хом, є́же возбрани́ти ду́ху. І ність владу́щаго в день сме́рти, і ність посла́ в день бра́ні, і не спасе́ть нече́стіє су́щаго в нем. | There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; and there is no power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in the day of battle; neither shall ungodliness save her votary. |

| І все сіє́ ви́діх, і вдах се́рдце моє́ во все сотворе́ніє, є́же сотворе́но єсть под со́лнцем, вся, во єли́ких облада́н єсть челові́к над челові́ком, є́же озло́бити єго́. | So I saw all this, and I applied my heart to every work that has been done under the sun; all the things wherein man has power over man to afflict him. |

| І тогда́ ви́діх нечести́вия во гро́би внесе́ни, і от свята́го, і ідо́ша і похвале́ні би́ша во гра́ді, я́ко си́це сотвори́ша. І сіє́ суєта́. | And then I saw the ungodly carried into the tombs, and that out of the holy place: and they departed, and were praised in the city, because they had done thus: this also is vanity. |

| Я́ко ність преріка́нія бива́ющаго творя́щим лука́воє вско́рі. Сего́ ра́ди уві́рися се́рдце сино́в челові́чеських в них, є́же сотвори́ти лука́воє. | Because there is no contradiction made on the part of those who do evil quickly, therefore the heart of the children of men is fully determined in them to do evil. |

| І́же согріши́, сотвори́л єсть лука́воє, отто́лі, і от долготи́ їх. І́бо і вім аз, я́ко єсть бла́го боя́щимся Бо́га, да боя́ться от лиця́ Єго́. | He that has sinned has done evil from that time, and long from beforehand: nevertheless I know, that it is well with them that fear God, that they may fear before him: |

| І не бу́деть бла́го нечести́вому, і не продолжи́ть дній в сі́ні, і́же ність боя́йся от лиця́ Бо́жия. | but it shall not be well with the ungodly, and he shall not prolong his days, which are as a shadow; forasmuch as he fears not before God. |

| Єсть суєта́, я́же сотворе́на єсть на землі́, я́ко суть пра́веднії, на ни́хже постиза́єть я́ко творе́ніє нечести́вих, і суть нечести́вії, на ни́хже постиза́єть я́ко творе́ніє пра́ведних. Ріх, я́ко і сіє́ суєта́. | There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there are righteous persons to whom it happens according to the doing of the ungodly; and there are ungodly men, to whom it happens according to the doing of the just: I said, This is also vanity. |

| І похвали́х аз весе́ліє, я́ко ність бла́го челові́ку под со́лнцем, но то́кмо є́же я́сти і пи́ти і є́же весели́тися, і то приби́ток єму́ в труді́ єго́ во днех живота́ єго́, ї́хже дал єсть єму́ Бог под со́лнцем. | Then I praised mirth, because there is no good for a man under the sun, but to eat, and drink, and be merry: and this shall attend him in his labour all the days of his life, which God has given him under the sun. |

| В ни́хже дах се́рдце моє́, є́же разумі́ти му́дрость і є́же ві́діти попече́ніє сотворе́ноє на землі́, я́ко і во дні і в нощі́ сна во о́чію своє́ю ність ви́дяй. | Whereupon I set my heart to know wisdom, and to perceive the trouble that was wrought upon the earth: for there is that neither by day nor night sees sleep with his eyes. |

| І ви́діх вся творе́нія Бо́жия, я́ко не мо́жеть челові́к ізобрісти́ творе́ніє сотворе́ноє под со́лнцем. Єли́ка а́ще потруди́ться челові́к обрісти́, і не обря́щеть. І єли́ка а́ще рече́ть му́дрий уразумі́ти, не возмо́жеть обрісти́. Ті́мже все сіє́ вдах в се́рдце моє́, і се́рдце моє́ все сіє́ ви́ді. | And I beheld all the works of God, that a man shall not be able to discover the work which is wrought under the sun; whatsoever things a man shall endeavour to seek, however a man may labour to seek it, yet he shall not find it; yea, how much soever a wise man may speak of knowing it, he shall not be able to find it: for I applied all this to my heart, and my heart has seen all this. |

Вся пред лице́м їх, суєта́ во всіх. | I saw that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: yea, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, though all are before their face. |

| Слу́чай єди́н пра́ведному і нечести́вому, благо́му і зло́му, і чи́стому і нечи́стому, і жру́щему і не жру́щему. Я́коже благи́й, та́ко согріша́яй. Я́коже клени́йся, та́ко боя́йся кля́тви. | Vanity is in all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good, and to the bad; both to the pure, and to the impure; both to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifices not: as is the good, so is the sinner: as is the swearer, even so is he that fears an oath. |

І се́рдце сино́в челові́чеських іспо́лнися лука́вствія, і пре́лесть в сердця́х їх і в животі́ їх, і по сих к ме́ртвим. | There is this evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yea, the heart of the sons of men is filled with evil, and madness is in their heart during their life, and after that they go to the dead. |

| Поне́же кто єсть, і́же приобща́ється ко всім живи́м? Єсть наде́жда, я́ко пес живи́й, той благ па́че льва ме́ртва. | For who is he that has fellowship with all the living? there is hope of him: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. |

| Поне́же живі́ї разумі́ють, я́ко у́мруть, ме́ртвії же не суть ві́дущії нічто́же. І ктому́ ність їм мзди, я́ко забве́нна єсть па́м'ять їх, | For the living will know that they shall die: but the dead know nothing, and there is no longer any reward to them; for their memory is lost. |

| і любо́в їх і не́нависть їх і рве́ніє їх уже́ поги́бе, і ча́сти ність їм ктому́ во ві́ки во вся́цім творе́нії под со́лнцем. | Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, have now perished; yea, there is no portion for them any more for ever in all that is done under the sun. |

| Прийди́, яждь в весе́лії хліб твой і пий во бла́зі се́рдці вино́ твоє́, я́ко уже́ уго́дна Бо́гу творе́нія Твоя́. | Go, eat thy bread with mirth, and drink thy wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favourably accepted thy works. |

| Во вся́ко вре́м'я да бу́дуть ри́зи твоя́ бі́ли, і єле́й на главі́ твоє́й да не оскуді́єть. | Let thy garments be always white; and let not oil be wanting on thine head. |

| І виждь житіє́ с жено́ю, ю́же возлюби́л єси́, во вся дні живота́ ю́ности твоєя́, да́нния ті под со́лнцем, вся дні су́єтствія твоєго́, я́ко сіє́ часть твоя́ в животі́ твоє́м і в труді́ твоє́м, і́мже ти труди́шися под со́лнцем. | And see life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which are given thee under the sun: for that is thy portion in thy life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun. |

| Вся, єли́ка а́ще обря́щеть рука́ твоя́ сотвори́ти, я́коже си́ла твоя́, сотвори́, зане́ ність сотворе́ніє і помишле́ніє і ра́зум і му́дрость во а́ді, а́може ти і́деши та́мо. | Whatsoever thine hand shall find to do, do with all thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Hades whither thou goest. |

| Обрати́хся і ви́діх под со́лнцем, я́ко ні ле́гким тече́ніє, ніже́ си́льним брань, ніже́ самому́ му́дрому хліб, ніже́ разу́мним бога́тство, ніже́ ві́дущим благода́ть, я́ко вре́м'я і слу́чай случи́ться всім сим. | I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor yet wealth to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of knowledge; for time and chance will happen to them all. |

| Я́ко у́бо не разумі́ челові́к вре́мене своєго́. Я́коже ри́би уловля́єми во мре́жі злі, і а́ки пти́ці уловля́єми в сі́ті, я́коже сія́, уловля́ються си́нове челові́честії во вре́м'я лука́во, єгда́ нападе́ть на ня внеза́пу. | For surely man also knows not his time: as fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as birds that are caught in a snare; even thus the sons of men are snared at an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them. |

| І сіє́ ви́діх, му́дрость под со́лнцем, і вели́ка єсть во мні. | This I also saw to be wisdom under the sun, and it is great before me: |

| Град мал, і муже́й в нем ма́ло, і при́йдеть нань цар вели́к і о́крест обля́жеть єго́, і соді́лаєть на него́ остро́ги ве́лія, | suppose there were a little city, and few men in it; and there should come against it a great king, and surround it, and build great mounds against it; |

| і обря́щеть в нем му́жа ни́щаго му́дра, і сей спасе́ть град му́дростію своє́ю, і челові́к не воспом'яну́ му́жа ни́щаго о́наго. | and should find in it a poor wise man, and he should save the city through his wisdom: yet no man would remember that poor man. |

| І ріх аз: блага́ му́дрость па́че си́ли, і му́дрость ни́щаго унічиже́на, і словеса́ єго́ не суть послу́шаєма. | And I said, Wisdom is better than power: yet the wisdom of the poor man is set at nought, and his words not listened to. |

| Словеса́ му́дрих в поко́ї сли́шаться, па́че кли́ча облада́ющих в безу́мії. | The words of the wise are heard in quiet more than the cry of them that rule in folly. |
|

|
| Блага́ му́дрость па́че ору́дій ра́тних, і согріша́яй єди́н погуби́ть благости́ню мно́гу. | Wisdom is better than weapons of war: and one sinner will destroy much good. |

| Му́хи уме́ршия згноя́ють єле́я сла́дость. Че́стно ма́лоє му́дрости па́че сла́ви вели́кі безу́мія. | Pestilent flies will corrupt a preparation of sweet ointment: and a little wisdom is more precious than great glory of folly. |
|

| Се́рдце му́драго одесну́ю єго́, се́рдце же безу́мнаго ошу́юю єго́. | A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left. |
|

|
| І в путь єгда́ безу́мний і́деть, се́рдце єго́ лиша́ється, і я́же помишля́єть, вся безу́міє суть. | Yea, and whenever a fool walks by the way, his heart will fail him, and all that he thinks of is folly. |
|

|
| А́ще дух владі́ющаго взи́деть на тя, мі́ста твоєго́ не оста́ви, я́ко ізціле́ніє утоли́ть гріхи́ вели́кі. | If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for soothing will put an end to great offences. |
|

| Єсть лука́вство, є́же ви́діх под со́лнцем, а́ки нево́льно ізи́де от лиця́ владі́ющаго. | There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, wherein an error has proceeded from the ruler. |
|

| Вдан безу́мний в висоти́ вели́кі, а бога́тії во смире́нних ся́дуть. | The fool has been set in very high places, while rich men would sit in a low one. |
|

|
| ви́діх рабо́в на ко́нех, і князе́й іду́щих я́ко рабо́в на землі́. | I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants on the earth. |
|

|
| Копа́яй я́му впаде́ть в ню, і разоря́ющаго огра́ду угри́знеть єго́ змій. | He that digs a pit shall fall into it; and him that breaks down a hedge a serpent shall bite. |
|

|
| Ізе́мляй ка́меніє поболи́ть от них, разсіца́яй дрова́ біду́ при́йметь в них; | He that removes stones shall be troubled thereby; he that cleaves wood shall be endangered thereby. |
|

|
| а́ще спаде́ть сі́чиво, і сам лице́м см'яте́ться; і си́ли укріпи́ть, і ізоби́ліє му́жу му́дрость. | If the axe-head should fall off, then the man troubles his countenance, and he must put forth more strength: and in that case skill is of no advantage to a man. |

| А́ще угри́знеть змій не в шепті́, і ність ізли́шества обава́ющему. | If a serpent bite when there is no charmer's whisper, then there is no advantage to the charmer. |
|

| Словеса́ уст прему́драго благода́ть, устні́ же безу́мнаго потоп'я́ть єго́; | The words of a wise mouth are gracious: but the lips of a fool will swallow him up. |
|

|
| нача́ло слове́с уст єго́ безу́міє, і послі́дняя уст єго́ пре́лесть лука́ва. | The beginning of the words of his mouth is folly: and the end of his talk mischievous madness. |
|

|
| Безу́мний умножа́єть словеса́; не разумі́ челові́к, что би́вшеє і что бу́дущеє, что созади́ єго́, (і) кто возвісти́ть єму́? | A fool moreover multiplies words: man knows not what has been, nor what will be: who shall tell him what will come after him? |
|

|
| Труд безу́мних озло́бить їх, і́же не разумі́ іти́ во град. | The labour of fools will afflict them, as that of one who knows not to go to the city. |
|

|
| Го́ре тебі́, гра́де, в не́мже цар твой юн, і кня́зі твої́ ра́но ядя́ть. | Woe to thee, O city, whose king is young, and thy princes eat in the morning! |
|

|
| Блаже́нна ти, земле́, єя́же цар твой син свобо́дних, і кня́зі твої́ во вре́м'я ядя́ть в си́лі і не постидя́ться. | Blessed art thou, O land, whose king is a son of nobles, and whose princes shall eat seasonably, for strength, and shall not be ashamed. |

| В лі́ностех смири́ться строп, і в пра́зднестві рук прока́плеть хра́мина. | By slothful neglect a building will be brought low: and by idleness of the hands the house will fall to pieces. |
|

|
| Во сміх творя́ть хліб, і вино́, і єле́й, є́же весели́тися живу́щим; і сребра́ со смире́нієм послу́шають вся́чеськая. | Men prepare bread for laughter, and wine and oil that the living should rejoice: but to money all things will humbly yield obedience. |
|

|
| І в со́вісті у́бо твоє́й не клени́ царя́, і в клі́ті ло́жниці твоєя́ не клени́ бога́таго; я́ко пти́ця небе́сная донесе́ть глас твой, і імі́яй крилі́ возвісти́ть сло́во твоє́. | Even in thy conscience, curse not the king; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry thy voice, and that which has wings shall report thy speech. |

| Посли́ хліб твой на лице́ води́, я́ко во мно́жестві дній обря́щеши єго́. | Send forth thy bread upon the face of the water: for thou shalt find it after many days. |

| Даждь часть седьми́м і осьми́м, я́ко не ві́си, что бу́деть лука́во на землі́. | Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil there shall be upon the earth. |
|

|
| А́ще іспо́лняться о́блаци дождя́, на зе́млю ізлива́ють; і а́ще паде́ть дре́во на юг, і а́ще на сі́вер, на мі́сті, іді́же паде́ть дре́во, та́мо бу́деть. | If the clouds be filled with rain, they pour it out upon the earth: and if a tree fall southward, or if it fall northward, in the place where the tree shall fall, there it shall be. |

| Блюди́й ві́тра не сі́єть, і сматря́яй во о́блаціх не по́жнеть. | He that observes the wind sows not; and he that looks at the clouds will not reap. |
|

| В ни́хже ність ві́дий, кий путь ду́ха, я́коже ко́сті во чре́ві ражда́ющия, та́ко не уразумі́єши діл Бо́жиїх, єли́ка сотвори́ть вся́чеськая. | Among whom none knows what is the way of the wind: as the bones are hid in the womb of a pregnant woman, so thou shalt not know the works of God, even all things whatsoever he shall do. |

| В зау́трії сій сі́м'я твоє́, і в ве́чер да не оставля́єть рука́ твоя́, я́ко не ві́си, ко́є проізи́деть сіє́ іли́ о́но, і а́ще обоя́ вку́пі блага́я. | In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening let not thine hand be slack: for thou knowest not what sort shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether both shall be good alike. |

| І сла́дко світ, і бла́го очи́ма зрі́ти со́лнце. | Moreover the light is sweet, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun. |

| Я́ко а́ще і мно́га лі́та поживе́ть челові́к, і о всіх сих возвесели́ться, і пом'яне́ть дні тьми, я́ко мно́зі бу́дуть: все гряду́щеє суєта́. | For even if a man should live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity. |

| Весели́ся, ю́ноше, во ю́ності твоє́й, і да ублажи́ть тя се́рдце твоє́ во днех ю́ности твоєя́, і ходи́ в путе́х се́рдця твоєго́ непоро́чен і не в виді́нії о́чію твоє́ю. І разумі́й, я́ко о всіх сих приведе́ть тя Бог на суд. | Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart blameless, but not in the sight of thine eyes: yet know that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. |

| І отста́ви я́рость от се́рдця твоєго́, і отри́ни лука́вство от пло́ті твоєя́, я́ко ю́ность і безу́міє суєта́. | Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for youth and folly are vanity. |

| І пом'яни́ сотво́ршаго тя во днех ю́ности твоєя́, до́ндеже не при́йдуть дні́є зло́би твоєя́, і приспі́ють лі́та, в ни́хже рече́ши: ність мі в них хоті́нія! | And remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the days of evil come, and the years overtake thee in which thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them. |

| До́ндеже не поме́ркнеть со́лнце і світ, і луна́ і зві́зди, і обратя́ться о́блаци созади́ дождя́. | While the sun and light are not darkened, nor the moon and the stars; nor the clouds return after the rain: |

| В день, в о́ньже подви́гнуться стра́жіє до́му, і развратя́ться му́жіє си́ли, і упраздня́ться ме́лющії, я́ко ума́лишася, і помрача́ться зря́щії во сква́жнех; | in the day wherein the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the mighty men shall become bent, and the grinding women cease because they have become few, and the women looking out at the windows be dark; |

| і затворя́ть две́рі на то́ржищі, в не́мощі гла́са ме́лющия, і воста́неть на глас пти́ці, і смиря́ться вся дще́рі пі́сні; | and they shall shut the doors in the market-place, because of the weakness of the voice of her that grinds at the mill; and he shall rise up at the voice of the sparrow, and all the daughters of song shall be brought low; |

| і на висоту́ у́зрять, і у́жас на путі́, і процвіте́ть амигда́л, і отолсті́ють пру́зіє, і разруши́ться каппари́с. Я́ко оти́де челові́к в дом ві́ка своєго́, і обидо́ша на то́ржищі пла́чущії, — | and they shall look up, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall blossom, and the locust shall increase, and the caper shall be scattered: because man has gone to his eternal home, and the mourners have gone about the market: |

| до́ндеже не преврати́ться у́же сре́бряноє, і не сокруши́ться повʼя́зка злата́я, і сокруши́ться водоно́с у істо́чника, і сло́миться колесо́ в ко́лії. | before the silver cord be let go, or the choice gold be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel run down to the cistern; |

| І возврати́ться персть в зе́млю, я́коже бі, і дух возврати́ться к Бо́гу, І́же даде́ єго́. | before the dust also return to the earth as it was, and the spirit return to God who gave it. |
|

| Суєта́ су́єтствій, рече́ Екклесіа́ст, вся́чеськая суєта́. | Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher; all is vanity. |
|

|
| І ли́шшеє, я́ко бисть Екклесіа́ст мудр, і я́ко научи́ ра́зуму челові́ка. І у́хо ізслі́дить красоту́ при́тчей. | And because the Preacher was wise above others, so it was that he taught man excellent knowledge, and the ear will trace out the parables. |

| Мно́го взиска́ Екклесіа́ст, є́же обрісти́ словеса́ хоті́нія, і напи́саноє пра́вости, словеса́ і́стини. | The Preacher sought diligently to find out acceptable words, and a correct writing, even words of truth. |

| Словеса́ му́дрих я́коже остни́ воло́вії і я́коже гво́здіє вонзе́но, і́же от сложе́ній да́ні би́ша от па́стиря єди́наго. | The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails firmly fastened, which have been given from one shepherd by agreement. |
|

|
| І мно́жає от них, си́не мой, храни́ся: твори́ти кни́ги мно́гі ність конця́, і уче́ніє мно́гоє труд пло́ті. | And moreover, my son, guard thyself by means of them: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. |
|

|
| Коне́ць сло́ва, все слу́шай: Бо́га бо́йся і за́повіді Єго́ храни́, я́ко сіє́ всяк челові́к; | Hear the end of the matter, the sum: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole man. |
|

| я́ко все творе́ніє приведе́ть Бог на суд о вся́цім погріше́нії, а́ще бла́го і а́ще лука́во. | For God will bring every work into judgment, with everything that has been overlooked, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. |
