1	1
Вели́цы бо сꙋ́ть сꙋдѝ твоѝ, (гдⷭ҇и,) и҆ неизглаго́ланни: сегѡ̀ ра́ди ненака̑занныѧ дꙋ́ши заблꙋди́ша.	For great are thy judgments, and cannot be expressed: therefore unnurtured souls have erred.

Возмнѣ́вше бо наси́льствовати ꙗ҆зы́къ ст҃ы́й беззако́ннїи, оу҆́зницы тмы̀ и҆ до́лгою но́щїю свѧ́зани, заключе́ни под̾ кро́вы, бѣглецы̀ вѣ́чнагѡ провѣ́дѣнїѧ лежа́ша.	For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation; they being shut up in their houses, the prisoners of darkness, and fettered with the bonds of a long night, lay there exiled from the eternal providence.

Оу҆таи́тисѧ бо мнѧ́ще въ сокрове́нныхъ грѣсѣ́хъ, мра́чнымъ забве́нїѧ покрыва́ломъ расточе́ни бы́ша, оу҆жаса́ющесѧ лю́тѣ и҆ страши́лищами возмꙋще́ни:	For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of forgetfulness, being horribly astonished, and troubled with strange apparitions.

ниже́ бо содержа́й и҆̀хъ верте́пъ без̾ стра́ха сохранѝ, шꙋ́мы же сходѧ́ще возмꙋща́хꙋ и҆̀хъ, и҆ привидѣ̑нїѧ дрѧ̑хлаѧ печа́льными ли́цами ꙗ҆влѧ́хꙋсѧ.	For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear: but noises as of waters falling down sounded about them, and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances.

И҆ ѻ҆́гненнаѧ оу҆́бѡ ни є҆ди́на си́ла можа́ше ѡ҆свѣща́ти, нижѐ ѕвѣ́здъ свѣ́тлїи пла́менїе просвѣти́ти можа́хꙋ въ тꙋ̀ но́щь стра́шнꙋю.	No power of the fire might give them light: neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night.

Ꙗ҆влѧ́шесѧ же и҆̀мъ то́кмѡ внеза́пный ѻ҆́гнь стра́ха и҆спо́лнь: оу҆страша́еми же неви́димымъ ѻ҆́нымъ призра́комъ, мнѧ́хꙋ гѡ́ршаѧ бы́ти ви̑димаѧ.	Only there appeared unto them a fire kindled of itself, very dreadful: for being much terrified, they thought the things which they saw to be worse than the sight they saw not.

Волше́бнагѡ же хꙋдо́жества предлежа́хꙋ посмѣѧ̑нїѧ, и҆ ѡ҆ премꙋ́дрости велича́нїѧ ѡ҆бличе́нїе оу҆кори́зненно:	As for the illusions of art magic, they were put down, and their vaunting in wisdom was reproved with disgrace.

ѡ҆бѣща́ющїисѧ бо и҆згна́ти стра́хи и҆ смꙋщє́нїѧ ѿ дꙋшѝ болѧ́щїѧ, сі́и посмѣѧ́телнымъ стра́хомъ болѧ́хꙋ.	For they, that promised to drive away terrors and troubles from a sick soul, were sick themselves of fear, worthy to be laughed at.

И҆́бо а҆́ще и҆ ничто́же и҆̀хъ мѧте́жное оу҆страша́ше, ѕвѣре́й прехо́дами и҆ ѕмїє́въ звизда́ньми подви́жени погиба́хꙋ тре́петни, и҆ а҆́ера ѿню́дъ неизбѣ́жнагѡ ѿрица́ющесѧ ви́дѣти.	For though no terrible thing did fear them; yet being scared with beasts that passed by, and hissing of serpents,

Боѧзли́ваѧ бо ѕло́ба, свои́мъ свидѣ́телствомъ ѡ҆сꙋжда́ема, вы́нꙋ прїе́млетъ во оу҆́мъ лю̑таѧ, содержи́ма со́вѣстїю.	they died for fear, denying that they saw the air, which could of no side be avoided.

Ничто́же бо є҆́сть стра́хъ, то́кмѡ лише́нїе по́мощей сꙋ́щихъ ѿ помышле́нїѧ.	For wickedness, condemned by her own witness, is very timorous, and being pressed with conscience, always forecasteth grievous things.
12	12
Внꙋ́трь же ме́нше сꙋ́щее ча́ѧнїе, бо́лшее мни́тъ невѣ́дѣнїе вины̀ подаю́щїѧ мꙋ́кꙋ.	For fear is nothing else but a betraying of the succours which reason offereth.
13	13
А҆ и҆̀же въ немощнꙋ́ю пои́стиннѣ но́щь, и҆ ѿ немощна́гѡ а҆́да верте́пѡвъ наше́дшꙋю, сно́мъ тѣ́мже спѧ́щїи,	And the expectation from within, being less, counteth the ignorance more than the cause which bringeth the torment.

ѻ҆́во оу҆́бѡ страши́лищами мечта́нїй гони́ми бѧ́хꙋ, ѻ҆́во же дꙋшѝ и҆зчеза́хꙋ преда́нїемъ: внеза́пный бо и҆̀мъ и҆ неча́ѧнный стра́хъ на́йде.	But they sleeping the same sleep that night, which was indeed intolerable, and which came upon them out of the bottoms of inevitable hell,

Пото́мъ та́кѡ, кто́ либо когда̀ бѣ̀ ѻ҆на́мѡ, низпады́й хранѧ́шесѧ въ темни́цѣ без̾ желѣ́за заключе́нъ:	were partly vexed with monstrous apparitions, and partly fainted, their heart failing them: for a sudden fear, and not looked for, came upon them.

а҆́ще бо земледѣ́латель кто̀ бы́сть, и҆лѝ па́стырь, и҆лѝ трꙋдѡ́въ пꙋсты́нныхъ дѣ́латель, пред̾ѧ́тъ бы́въ, неизбѣ́жнꙋю терпѧ́ше нꙋ́ждꙋ:	So then whosoever there fell down was straitly kept, shut up in a prison without iron bars.
17	17
є҆ди́нымъ бо оу҆́жемъ тмы̀ всѝ бѧ́хꙋ свѧ́зани. А҆́ще дꙋ́хъ звизда́ѧй, и҆лѝ междꙋ̀ ча́стыхъ древе́сныхъ вѣ́твей пти́чїй гла́съ сладкопѣ́снивый, и҆лѝ си́ла водна́ѧ текꙋ́щи ѕѣ́лнѣ,	For whether he were husbandman, or shepherd, or a labourer in the field, he was overtaken, and endured that necessity, which could not be avoided: for they were all bound with one chain of darkness.

и҆лѝ шꙋ́мъ ѕѣ́лный низпа́дающихъ ка́менїй, и҆лѝ и҆гра́ющихъ живо́тныхъ тече́нїе неви́димое, и҆лѝ рыка́ющихъ лю́тыхъ ѕвѣре́й гла́съ, и҆лѝ ѿзыва́ющьсѧ ѿ де́брей го́рскихъ гла́съ, разслаблѧ́хꙋ ѻ҆́ныхъ оу҆страша́юще.	Whether it were a whistling wind, or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches, or a pleasing fall of water running violently,

Всѧ́ бо вселе́ннаѧ свѣ́тлымъ просвѣща́шесѧ свѣ́томъ, и҆ невозбра́нными дѣ́лы содержа́шесѧ:	or a terrible sound of stones cast down, or a running that could not be seen of skipping beasts, or a roaring voice of most savage wild beasts, or a rebounding echo from the hollow mountains: these things made them to swoon for fear.
20	20
на є҆ди́ныхъ же ѻ҆́ныхъ простира́шесѧ тѧ́жкаѧ но́щь, ѡ҆́бразъ бꙋ́дꙋщагѡ и҆́хъ воспрїѧ́тїѧ тмы̀: са́ми же себѣ̀ бы́ша тмы̀ тѧжча́йшїи.	For the whole world shined with clear light, and none were hindered in their labour:
