Now the word of the Lord came to Jonas the son of Amathi, saying,	І було слово Господнє до Іони, сина Амафиїного:

Rise, and go to Nineve, the great city, and preach in it; for the cry of its wickedness is come up to me.	встань, іди у Ниневію, місто велике, і проповідуй у ньому, бо злодіяння його дійшли до Мене.

But Jonas rose up to flee to Tharsis from the presence of the Lord. And he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharsis: and he paid his fare, and went up into it, to sail with them to Tharsis from the presence of the Lord.	І встав Іона, щоб утікати у Фарсис від лиця Господа, і прийшов у Іоппію, і знайшов корабель, який вирушав у Фарсис, віддав платню за проїзд і ввійшов у нього, щоб плисти з ними у Фарсис від імені Господа.

And the Lord raised up a wind on the sea; and there was a great storm on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being broken.	Але Господь здійняв на морі сильний вітер, і зробилася на морі велика буря, і корабель готовий був розбитися.

And the sailors were alarmed, and cried every one to his god, and cast out the wares that were in the ship into the sea, that it might be lightened of them. But Jonas was gone down into the hold of the ship, and was asleep, and snored.	І злякалися корабельники, і взивали кожен до свого бога, і стали кидати у море поклажу з корабля, щоб полегшити його від неї; Іона ж спустився усередину корабля, ліг і міцно заснув.

And the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, Why snorest thou? arise, and call upon thy God, that God may save us, and we perish not.	І прийшов до нього начальник корабля і сказав йому: чого ти спиш? встань, взивай до Бога твого; можливо, Бог згадає про нас, і ми не загинемо.

And each man said to his neighbour, Come, let us cast lots, and find out for whose sake this mischief is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonas.	І сказали одне одному: підемо, кинемо жереби, щоб дізнатися, за кого осягає нас це лихо. І кинули жереби, й упав жереб на Іону.

And they said to him, Tell us what is thine occupation, and whence comest thou, and of what country and what people art thou?	Тоді сказали йому: скажи нам, за кого осягла нас ця біда? яке твоє заняття, і звідки ти йдеш? де твоя країна, і з якого ти народу?

And he said to them, I am a servant of the Lord; and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea, and the dry land.	І він сказав їм: я єврей, шаную Господа Бога небес, Який створив море і сушу.

Then the men feared exceedingly, and said to him, What is this that thou hast done? for the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he had told them.	І злякалися люди страхом великим і сказали йому: для чого ти це зробив? Бо довідалися ці люди, що він біжить від лиця Господнього, як він сам оголосив їм.

And they said to him, What shall we do to thee, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea rose, and lifted its wave exceedingly.	І сказали йому: що зробити нам з тобою, щоб море затихло для нас? Бо море не переставало хвилюватися.
12	12
And Jonas said to them, Take me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea shall be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.	Тоді він сказав їм: візьміть мене і киньте мене у море, і море затихне для вас, бо я знаю, що через мене спостигла вас ця велика буря.
13	13
And the men tried hard to return to the land, and were not able: for the sea rose and grew more and more tempestuous against them.	Але ці люди почали посилено гребти, щоб пристати до землі, але не могли, тому що море все продовжувало бушувати проти них.

And they cried to the Lord, and said, Forbid it, Lord: let us not perish for the sake of this man's life, and bring not righteous blood upon us: for thou, Lord, hast done as thou wouldest.	Тоді воззвали вони до Господа і сказали: молимо Тебе, Господи, нехай не загинемо за душу людини цієї, і не постав нам у провину кров невинну; бо Ти, Господи, зробив те, що угодно Тобі!

So they took Jonas, and cast him out into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.	І взяли Іону і кинули його у море, і затихло море у люті своїй.
16	16
And the men feared the Lord very greatly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and vowed vows.	І злякалися ці люди Господа великим страхом, і принесли Господу жертву, і дали обітниці.
Chapter 2	Глава 2

1	1
Now the Lord had commanded a great whale to swallow up Jonas: and Jonas was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights.	І повелів Господь великому киту поглинути Іону; і був Іона в утробі цього кита три дні і три ночі.
2	2
And Jonas prayed to the Lord his God out of the belly of the whale,	І помолився Іона Господу Богу своєму з утроби кита
3	3
and said, I cried in my affliction to the Lord my God, and he hearkened to me, even to my cry out of the belly of hell: thou heardest my voice.	і сказав: до Господа воззвав я у скорботі моїй, і Він почув мене; з утроби пекла я волав, і Ти почув голос мій.
4	4
Thou didst cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea, and the floods compassed me: all thy billows and thy waves have passed upon me.	Ти ввергнув мене у глибину, у серце моря, і потоки оточили мене, усі води Твої і хвилі Твої проходили наді мною.
5	5
And I said, I am cast out of thy presence: shall I indeed look again toward thy holy temple?	І я сказав: відкинутий я від очей Твоїх, однак я знову побачу святий храм Твій.

Water was poured around me to the soul: the lowest deep compassed me, my head went down	Охопили мене води до душі моєї, безодня обійняла мене; морською травою оповита була голова моя.

to the clefts of the mountains; I went down into the earth, whose bars are the everlasting barriers: yet, O Lord my God, let my ruined life be restored.	До основ гір я зійшов, земля своїми запорами навік закрила мене; але Ти, Господи Боже мій, виведеш душу мою з пекла.
8	8
When my soul was failing me, I remembered the Lord; and may my prayer come to thee into thy holy temple.	Коли знемогла у мені душа моя, я згадав про Господа, і молитва моя дійшла до Тебе, до храму святого Твого.
9	9
They that observe vanities and lies have forsaken their own mercy.	Ті, що шанують суєтних і облудних богів, залишили Милосердого свого,

But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of praise and thanksgiving: all that I have vowed I will pay to thee, the Lord of my salvation.	а я гласом хвали принесу Тобі жертву; що обіцяв, виконаю: у Господа спасіння!

And the whale was commanded by the Lord, and it cast up Jonas on the dry land.	І сказав Господь киту, і він вивергнув Іону на сушу.
Chapter 3	Глава 3

1	1
And the word of the Lord came to Jonas the second time, saying,	І було слово Господнє до Іони вдруге:

Rise, go to Nineve, the great city, and preach in it according to the former preaching which I spoke to thee of.	встань, йди в Ниневію, місто велике, і проповідуй у ній, що́ Я повелів тобі.

And Jonas arose, and went to Nineve, as the Lord had spoken. Now Nineve was an exceeding great city, of about three days' journey.	І встав Іона і пішов у Ниневію, за словом Господнім; Ниневія ж була містом великим у Бога, на три дні ходи.
4	4
And Jonas began to enter into the city about a day's journey, and he proclaimed, and said, Yet three days, and Nineve shall be overthrown.	І почав Іона ходити по місту, скільки можна пройти в один день, і проповідував, говорячи: ще сорок днів, і Ниневія буде зруйнована!
5	5
And the men of Nineve believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloths, from the greatest of them to the least of them.	І повірили ниневитяни Богу, й оголосили пост, і вдяглися у веретища, від великого з них до малого.
6	6
And the word reached the king of Nineve, and he arose from off his throne, and took off his raiment from him, and put on sackcloth, and sat on ashes.	Це слово дійшло до царя Ниневії, і він устав із престолу свого, і зняв із себе царське облачення своє, й одягся у веретище, і сів на попелі,

And proclamation was made, and it was commanded in Nineve by the king and by his great men, saying, Let not men, or cattle, or oxen, or sheep, taste any thing, nor feed, nor drink water.	і повелів проголосити і сказати у Ниневії від імені царя і вельмож його: «щоб ні люди, ні худоба, ні воли, ні вівці нічого не їли, не ходили на пасовище і води не пили,

So men and cattle were clothed with sackcloths, and cried earnestly to God; and they turned every one from their evil way, and from the iniquity that was in their hands, saying,	і щоб покриті були веретищем люди і худоба і сильно волали до Бога, і щоб кожен навернувся від злого шляху свого і від насильства рук своїх.
9	9
Who knows if God will repent, and turn from his fierce anger, and so we shall not perish?	Хто знає, можливо, ще Бог змилосердиться і відверне від нас розпалений гнів Свій, і ми не загинемо».
10	10
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil ways; and God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did it not.	І побачив Бог діла їхні, що вони навернулися від злого путі свого, і пожалів Бог щодо біди, про яку сказав, що наведе на них, і не навів.
Chapter 4	Глава 4

1	1
But Jonas was very deeply grieved, and he was confounded.	Іона сильно засмутився цим і був роздратований.
2	2
And he prayed to the Lord, and said, O Lord, were not these my words when I was yet in my land? therefore I made haste to flee to Tharsis; because I knew that thou art merciful and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and repentest of evil.	І молився він Господу і сказав: о, Господи! чи не це говорив я, коли ще був у країні моїй? Тому я і побіг у Фарсис, бо знав, що Ти Бог благий і милосердий, довготерпеливий і многомилостивий і жалкуєш щодо нещастя.

And now, Lord God, take my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.	І нині, Господи, візьми душу мою від мене, бо краще мені померти, ніж жити.
4	4
And the Lord said to Jonas, Art thou very much grieved?	І сказав Господь: невже це засмутило тебе так сильно?
5	5
And Jonas went out from the city, and sat over against the city; and he made for himself there a booth, and he sat under it, until he should perceive what would become of the city.	І вийшов Іона з міста, і сів на східній стороні міста, і зробив собі там кущу, і сів під нею у тіні, щоб побачити, що буде з містом.
6	6
And the Lord God commanded a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jonas, to be a shadow over his head, to shade him from his calamities: and Jonas rejoiced with great joy for the gourd.	І виростив Господь Бог рослину, і вона піднялася над Іоною, щоб над головою його була тінь і щоб позбавити його засмучення його; Іона дуже зрадів цій рослині.

And God commanded a worm the next morning, and it smote the gourd, and it withered away.	І влаштував Бог так, що на другий день з появою зорі черва підточила рослину, і вона засохла.
8	8
And it came to pass at the rising of the sun, that God commanded a burning east wind; and the sun smote on the head of Jonas, and he fainted, and despaired of his life, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.	Коли ж зійшло сонце, навів Бог пекучий східний вітер, і сонце стало палити голову Іони, так що він знеміг і просив собі смерти, і сказав: краще мені померти, ніж жити.

And God said to Jonas, Art thou very much grieved for the gourd? And he said, I am very much grieved, even to death.	І сказав Бог Іоні: невже так сильно засмутився ти через рослину? Він сказав: дуже засмутився, навіть до смерти.
10	10
And the Lord said, Thou hadst pity on the gourd, for which thou hast not suffered, neither didst thou rear it; which came up before night, and perished before another night:	Тоді сказав Господь: ти шкодуєш за рослиною, над якою ти не трудився і якої не вирощував, яка в одну ніч виросла і в одну ж ніч і пропала:
11	11
and shall not I spare Nineve, the great city, in which dwell more than twelve myriads of human beings, who do not know their right hand or their left hand; and also much cattle?	чи Мені не пожаліти Ниневії, міста великого, у якому понад сто двадцять тисяч чоловік, які не вміють відрізнити правої руки від лівої, і безліч худоби?
