Now the word of the Lord came to Jonas the son of Amathi, saying,	ΚΑΙ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς ᾿Ιωνᾶν τὸν τοῦ ᾿Αμαθὶ λέγων·

Rise, and go to Nineve, the great city, and preach in it; for the cry of its wickedness is come up to me.	ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύθητι εἰς Νινευὴ τὴν πόλιν τὴν μεγάλην καὶ κήρυξον ἐν αὐτῇ, ὅτι ἀνέβη ἡ κραυγὴ τῆς κακίας αὐτῆς πρός με.

But Jonas rose up to flee to Tharsis from the presence of the Lord. And he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tharsis: and he paid his fare, and went up into it, to sail with them to Tharsis from the presence of the Lord.	καὶ ἀνέστη ᾿Ιωνᾶς τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσὶς ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου καὶ κατέβη εἰς ᾿Ιόππην καὶ εὗρε πλοῖον βαδίζον εἰς Θαρσὶς καὶ ἔδωκε τὸν ναῦλον αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐνέβη εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦ πλεῦσαι μετ᾿ αὐτῶν εἰς Θαρσὶς ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου.

And the Lord raised up a wind on the sea; and there was a great storm on the sea, and the ship was in danger of being broken.	καὶ Κύριος ἐξήγειρε πνεῦμα μέγα εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ ἐγένετο κλύδων μέγας ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ, καὶ τὸ πλοῖον ἐκινδύνευε τοῦ συντριβῆναι.

And the sailors were alarmed, and cried every one to his god, and cast out the wares that were in the ship into the sea, that it might be lightened of them. But Jonas was gone down into the hold of the ship, and was asleep, and snored.	καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ναυτικοὶ καὶ ἀνεβόησαν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸ θεὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκβολὴν ἐποιήσαντο τῶν σκευῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τοῦ κουφισθῆναι ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν. ᾿Ιωνᾶς δὲ κατέβη εἰς τὴν κοίλην τοῦ πλοίου καὶ ἐκάθευδε καὶ ἔρρεγχε.

And the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, Why snorest thou? arise, and call upon thy God, that God may save us, and we perish not.	καὶ προσῆλθε πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πρωρεὺς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· τί σὺ ρέγχεις; ἀνάστα καὶ ἐπικαλοῦ τὸν Θεόν σου, ὅπως διασώσῃ ὁ Θεὸς ἡμᾶς καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα.

And each man said to his neighbour, Come, let us cast lots, and find out for whose sake this mischief is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonas.	καὶ εἶπεν ἕκαστος πρὸς τὸν πλησίον αὐτοῦ· δεῦτε βάλωμεν κλήρους καὶ ἐπιγνῶμεν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν; καὶ ἔβαλον κλήρους, καὶ ἔπεσεν ὁ κλῆρος ἐπὶ ᾿Ιωνᾶν.

And they said to him, Tell us what is thine occupation, and whence comest thou, and of what country and what people art thou?	καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· ἀπάγγειλον ἡμῖν τίνος ἕνεκεν ἡ κακία αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐν ἡμῖν; τίς σου ἡ ἐργασία ἐστί; καὶ πόθεν ἔρχῃ, καὶ τοῦ πορεύῃ, καὶ ἐκ ποίας χώρας καὶ ἐκ ποίου λαοῦ εἶ σύ;

And he said to them, I am a servant of the Lord; and I worship the Lord God of heaven, who made the sea, and the dry land.	καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτούς· δοῦλος Κυρίου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ καὶ τὸν Κύριον Θεὸν τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐγὼ σέβομαι, ὃς ἐποίησε τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηράν.

Then the men feared exceedingly, and said to him, What is this that thou hast done? for the men knew that he was fleeing from the face of the Lord, because he had told them.	καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβον μέγαν καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· τί τοῦτο ἐποίησας; διότι ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄνδρες, ὅτι ἐκ προσώπου Κυρίου ἦν φεύγων, ὅτι ἀπήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς.

And they said to him, What shall we do to thee, that the sea may be calm to us? for the sea rose, and lifted its wave exceedingly.	καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν· τί ποιήσομέν σοι καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφ᾿ ἡμῶν; ὅτι ἡ θάλασσα ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐξήγειρε μᾶλλον κλύδωνα.

And Jonas said to them, Take me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea shall be calm to you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.	καὶ εἶπεν ᾿Ιωνᾶς πρὸς αὐτούς· ἄρατέ με καὶ ἐμβάλετέ με εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ κοπάσει ἡ θάλασσα ἀφ᾿ ὑμῶν· διότι ἔγνωκα ἐγὼ ὅτι δι᾿ ἐμὲ ὁ κλύδων ὁ μέγας οὗτος ἐφ᾿ ὑμᾶς ἐστι.

And the men tried hard to return to the land, and were not able: for the sea rose and grew more and more tempestuous against them.	καὶ παρεβιάζοντο οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι πρὸς τὴν γῆν καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο, ὅτι ἡ θάλασσα ἐπορεύετο καὶ ἐξηγείρετο μᾶλλον ἐπ᾿ αὐτούς.

And they cried to the Lord, and said, Forbid it, Lord: let us not perish for the sake of this man's life, and bring not righteous blood upon us: for thou, Lord, hast done as thou wouldest.	καὶ ἀνεβόησαν πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπαν· μηδαμῶς, Κύριε, μὴ ἀπολώμεθα ἕνεκεν τῆς ψυχῆς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου, καὶ μὴ δῷς ἐφ᾿ ἡμᾶς αἷμα δίκαιον, διότι σύ, Κύριε, ὃν τρόπον ἐβούλου, πεποίηκας.

So they took Jonas, and cast him out into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging.	καὶ ἔλαβον τὸν ᾿Ιωνᾶν καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, καὶ ἔστη ἡ θάλασσα ἐκ τοῦ σάλου αὐτῆς.

And the men feared the Lord very greatly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord, and vowed vows.	καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν οἱ ἄνδρες φόβῳ μεγάλῳ τὸν Κύριον καὶ ἔθησαν θυσίαν τῷ Κυρίῳ καὶ ηὔξαντο τὰς εὐχάς.
Chapter 2	Κεφάλαιο 2

Now the Lord had commanded a great whale to swallow up Jonas: and Jonas was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights.	ΚΑΙ προσέταξε Κύριος κήτει μεγάλῳ καταπιεῖν τὸν ᾿Ιωνᾶν· καὶ ἦν ᾿Ιωνᾶς ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ τοῦ κήτους τρεῖς ἡμέρας καὶ τρεῖς νύκτας.

And Jonas prayed to the Lord his God out of the belly of the whale,	καὶ προσηύξατο ᾿Ιωνᾶς πρὸς Κύριον τὸν Θεὸν αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας τοῦ κήτους
3	3
and said, I cried in my affliction to the Lord my God, and he hearkened to me, even to my cry out of the belly of hell: thou heardest my voice.	καὶ εἶπεν· ᾿Εβόησα ἐν θλίψει μου πρὸς Κύριον τὸν Θεόν μου, καὶ εἰσήκουσέ μου· ἐκ κοιλίας ᾅδου κραυγῆς μου ἤκουσας φωνῆς μου.

Thou didst cast me into the depths of the heart of the sea, and the floods compassed me: all thy billows and thy waves have passed upon me.	ἀπέρριψάς με εἰς βάθη καρδίας θαλάσσης, καὶ ποταμοὶ ἐκύκλωσάν με· πάντες οἱ μετεωρισμοί σου καὶ τὰ κύματά σου ἐπ᾿ ἐμὲ διῆλθον.

And I said, I am cast out of thy presence: shall I indeed look again toward thy holy temple?	καὶ ἐγὼ εἶπα· ἀπῶσμαι ἐξ ὀφθαλμῶν σου· ἆρα προσθήσω τοῦ ἐπιβλέψαι με πρὸς ναὸν τὸν ἅγιόν σου;

Water was poured around me to the soul: the lowest deep compassed me, my head went down	περιεχύθη μοι ὕδωρ ἕως ψυχῆς, ἄβυσσος ἐκύκλωσέ με ἐσχάτη, ἔδυ ἡ κεφαλή μου εἰς σχισμὰς ὀρέων.

to the clefts of the mountains; I went down into the earth, whose bars are the everlasting barriers: yet, O Lord my God, let my ruined life be restored.	κατέβην εἰς γῆν, ἧς οἱ μοχλοὶ αὐτῆς κάτοχοι αἰώνιοι, καὶ ἀναβήτω ἐκ φθορᾶς ἡ ζωή μου, πρὸς σὲ Κύριε ὁ Θεός μου.

When my soul was failing me, I remembered the Lord; and may my prayer come to thee into thy holy temple.	ἐν τῷ ἐκλείπειν ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ τὴν ψυχήν μου τοῦ Κυρίου ἐμνήσθην, καὶ ἔλθοι πρὸς σὲ ἡ προσευχή μου εἰς ναὸν τὸ ἅγιόν σου.
9	9
They that observe vanities and lies have forsaken their own mercy.	φυλασσόμενοι μάταια καὶ ψευδῆ ἔλεον αὐτῶν ἐγκατέλιπον.
10	10
But I will sacrifice to thee with the voice of praise and thanksgiving: all that I have vowed I will pay to thee, the Lord of my salvation.	ἐγὼ δὲ μετὰ φωνῆς αἰνέσεως καὶ ἐξομολογήσεως θύσω σοι, ὅσα ηὐξάμην ἀποδώσω σοι εἰς σωτηρίαν μου τῷ Κυρίῳ.

And the whale was commanded by the Lord, and it cast up Jonas on the dry land.	Καὶ προσέταξε Κύριος τῷ κήτει, καὶ ἐξέβαλε τὸν ᾿Ιωνᾶν ἐπὶ τὴν ξηράν.
Chapter 3	Κεφάλαιο 3

1	1
And the word of the Lord came to Jonas the second time, saying,	ΚΑΙ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς ᾿Ιωνᾶν ἐκ δευτέρου λέγων·
2	2
Rise, go to Nineve, the great city, and preach in it according to the former preaching which I spoke to thee of.	ἀνάστηθι καὶ πορεύθητι εἰς Νινευὴ τὴν πόλιν τὴν μεγάλην καὶ κήρυξον ἐν αὐτῇ κατὰ τὸ κήρυγμα τὸ ἔμπροσθεν, ὃ ἐγὼ ἐλάλησα πρός σε.

And Jonas arose, and went to Nineve, as the Lord had spoken. Now Nineve was an exceeding great city, of about three days' journey.	καὶ ἀνέστη ᾿Ιωνᾶς καὶ ἐπορεύθη εἰς Νινευή, καθὰ ἐλάλησε Κύριος· ἡ δὲ Νινευὴ ἦν πόλις μεγάλη τῷ Θεῷ ὡσεὶ πορείας ὁδοῦ τριῶν ἡμερῶν.

And Jonas began to enter into the city about a day's journey, and he proclaimed, and said, Yet three days, and Nineve shall be overthrown.	καὶ ἤρξατο ᾿Ιωνᾶς τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ὡσεὶ πορείαν ἡμέρας μιᾶς καὶ ἐκήρυξε καὶ εἶπεν· ἔτι τρεῖς ἡμέραι καὶ Νινευὴ καταστραφήσεται.

And the men of Nineve believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloths, from the greatest of them to the least of them.	καὶ ἐπίστευσαν οἱ ἄνδρες Νινευὴ τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ἐκήρυξαν νηστείαν καὶ ἐνεδύσαντο σάκκους ἀπὸ μεγάλου αὐτῶν ἕως μικροῦ αὐτῶν.

And the word reached the king of Nineve, and he arose from off his throne, and took off his raiment from him, and put on sackcloth, and sat on ashes.	καὶ ἤγγισεν ὁ λόγος πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα τῆς Νινευή, καὶ ἐξανέστη ἀπὸ τοῦ θρόνου αὐτοῦ καὶ περιείλετο τὴν στολὴν αὐτοῦ ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ καὶ περιεβάλετο σάκκον καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ σποδοῦ.

And proclamation was made, and it was commanded in Nineve by the king and by his great men, saying, Let not men, or cattle, or oxen, or sheep, taste any thing, nor feed, nor drink water.	καὶ ἐκηρύχθη καὶ ἐρρέθη ἐν τῇ Νινευὴ παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ παρὰ τῶν μεγιστάνων αὐτοῦ λέγων· οἱ ἄνθρωποι καὶ τὰ κτήνη καὶ οἱ βόες καὶ τὰ πρόβατα μὴ γευσάσθωσαν μηδὲ νεμέσθωσαν μηδὲ ὕδωρ πιέτωσαν.

So men and cattle were clothed with sackcloths, and cried earnestly to God; and they turned every one from their evil way, and from the iniquity that was in their hands, saying,	καὶ περιεβάλλοντο σάκκους οἱ ἄνθρωποι καὶ τὰ κτήνη, καὶ ἀνεβόησαν πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ἐκτενῶς· καὶ ἀπέστρεψαν ἕκαστος ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτῶν τῆς πονηρᾶς καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀδικίας τῆς ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν λέγοντες·

Who knows if God will repent, and turn from his fierce anger, and so we shall not perish?	τίς οἶδεν εἰ μετανοήσει ὁ Θεὸς καὶ ἀποστρέψει ἐξ ὀργῆς θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀπολώμεθα;

And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil ways; and God repented of the evil which he had said he would do to them; and he did it not.	καὶ εἶδεν ὁ Θεὸς τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν, ὅτι ἀπέστρεψαν ἀπὸ τῶν ὁδῶν αὐτῶν τῶν πονηρῶν, καὶ μετενόησεν ὁ Θεὸς ἐπὶ τῇ κακίᾳ, ᾗ ἐλάλησε τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοῖς, καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησε.
Chapter 4	Κεφάλαιο 4

1	1
But Jonas was very deeply grieved, and he was confounded.	ΚΑΙ ἐλυπήθη ᾿Ιωνᾶς λύπην μεγάλην καὶ συνεχύθη,

And he prayed to the Lord, and said, O Lord, were not these my words when I was yet in my land? therefore I made haste to flee to Tharsis; because I knew that thou art merciful and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in kindness, and repentest of evil.	καὶ προσηύξατο πρὸς Κύριον καὶ εἶπεν· ῏Ω Κύριε, οὐχ οὗτοι οἱ λόγοι μου ἔτι ὄντος μου ἐν τῇ γῇ μου; διὰ τοῦτο προέφθασα τοῦ φυγεῖν εἰς Θαρσίς, διότι ἔγνων ὅτι σὺ ἐλεήμων καὶ οἰκτίρμων, μακρόθυμος καὶ πολυέλεος καὶ μετανοῶν ἐπὶ ταῖς κακίαις.

And now, Lord God, take my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.	καὶ νῦν, δέσποτα Κύριε, λάβε τὴν ψυχήν μου ἀπ᾿ ἐμοῦ, ὅτι καλὸν τὸ ἀποθανεῖν με μᾶλλον, ἢ ζῆν με.

And the Lord said to Jonas, Art thou very much grieved?	καὶ εἶπε Κύριος πρὸς ᾿Ιωνᾶν· εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σύ;

And Jonas went out from the city, and sat over against the city; and he made for himself there a booth, and he sat under it, until he should perceive what would become of the city.	καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ᾿Ιωνᾶς ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἀπέναντι τῆς πόλεως· καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑαυτῷ ἐκεῖ σκηνὴν καὶ ἐκάθητο ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς, ἕως οὗ ἀπίδῃ τί ἔσται τῇ πόλει.

And the Lord God commanded a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jonas, to be a shadow over his head, to shade him from his calamities: and Jonas rejoiced with great joy for the gourd.	καὶ προσέταξε Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς κολοκύνθῃ, καὶ ἀνέβη ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς τοῦ ᾿Ιωνᾶ τοῦ εἶναι σκιὰν ὑπεράνω τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτοῦ τοῦ σκιάζειν αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν αὐτοῦ. καὶ ἐχάρη ᾿Ιωνᾶς ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ χαρὰν μεγάλην.

And God commanded a worm the next morning, and it smote the gourd, and it withered away.	καὶ προσέταξεν ὁ Θεὸς σκώληκι ἑωθινῇ τῇ ἐπαύριον, καὶ ἐπάταξε τὴν κολοκύνθαν, καὶ ἀπεξηράνθη.

And it came to pass at the rising of the sun, that God commanded a burning east wind; and the sun smote on the head of Jonas, and he fainted, and despaired of his life, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.	καὶ ἐγένετο ἅμα τῷ ἀνατεῖλαι τὸν ἥλιον καὶ προσέταξεν ὁ Θεὸς πνεύματι καύσωνι συγκαίοντι, καὶ ἐπάταξεν ὁ ἥλιος ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῦ ᾿Ιωνᾶ· καὶ ὠλιγοψύχησε καὶ ἐπελέγετο τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπε· καλόν μοι ἀποθανεῖν με ἢ ζῆν.

And God said to Jonas, Art thou very much grieved for the gourd? And he said, I am very much grieved, even to death.	καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Θεὸς πρὸς ᾿Ιωνᾶν· εἰ σφόδρα λελύπησαι σὺ ἐπὶ τῇ κολοκύνθῃ; καὶ εἶπε· σφόδρα λελύπημαι ἐγὼ ἑως θανάτου.

And the Lord said, Thou hadst pity on the gourd, for which thou hast not suffered, neither didst thou rear it; which came up before night, and perished before another night:	καὶ εἶπε Κύριος· σὺ ἐφείσω ὑπὲρ τῆς κολοκύνθης, ὑπὲρ ἧς οὐκ ἐκακοπάθησας ἐπ᾿ αὐτὴν οὐδὲ ἐξέθρεψας αὐτήν, ἣ ἐγενήθη ὑπὸ νύκτα καὶ ὑπὸ νύκτα ἀπώλετο.

and shall not I spare Nineve, the great city, in which dwell more than twelve myriads of human beings, who do not know their right hand or their left hand; and also much cattle?	ἐγὼ δὲ οὐ φείσομαι ὑπὲρ Νινευὴ τῆς πόλεως τῆς μεγάλης, ἐν ᾗ κατοικοῦσι πλείους ἢ δώδεκα μυριάδες ἀνθρώπων, οἵτινες οὐκ ἔγνωσαν δεξιὰν αὐτῶν ἢ ἀριστερὰν αὐτῶν, καὶ κτήνη πολλά;
