Chapter 1	Глава 1

The burden of Nineve: the book of the vision of Naum the Elkesite.	Пророцтво про Ниневію; книга видінь Наума елкосеянина.

God is jealous, and the Lord avenges; the Lord avenges with wrath; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries, and he cuts off his enemies.	Господь є Бог ревнитель і месник; месник Господь і страшний у гніві: помщається Господь ворогам Своїм і не пощадить супротивників Своїх.

The Lord is long-suffering, and his power is great, and the Lord will not hold any guiltless: his way is in destruction and in the whirlwind, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.	Господь довготерпеливий і великий могутністю, і не залишає без покарання; у вихорі й у бурі хода Господа, хмара — пил від ніг Його.

He threatens the sea, and dries it up, and exhausts all the rivers: the land of Basan, and Carmel are brought low, and the flourishing trees of Libanus have come to nought.	Заборонить Він морю, і воно висихає, і всі ріки вичерпуються; в’яне Васан і Кармил, і блякне цвіт на Ливані.

The mountains quake at him, and the hills are shaken, and the earth recoils at his presence, even the world, and all that dwell in it.	Гори трясуться перед Ним, і пагорби тануть, і земля коливається перед лицем Його, і вселенна і всі, що живуть у ній.

Who shall stand before his anger? and who shall withstand in the anger of his wrath? his wrath brings to nought kingdoms, and the rocks are burst asunder by him.	Перед обуренням Його хто встоїть? І хто стерпить полум’я гніву Його? Гнів Його розливається як вогонь; скелі розпадаються перед Ним.

The Lord is good to them that wait on him in the day of affliction; and he knows them that reverence him.	Благий Господь, притулок у день скорботи, і знає тих, що надіються на Нього.

But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end: darkness shall pursue those that rise up against him and his enemies.	Але повінню, що все потоплює, зруйнує дощенту Ниневію, і ворогів Його покриє морок.

What do ye devise against the Lord? he will make a complete end: he will not take vengeance by affliction twice at the same time.	Що замишляєте ви проти Господа? Він звершить знищення, і біда вже не повториться,

For the enemy shall be laid bare even to the foundation, and shall be devoured as twisted yew, and as stubble fully dry.	бо ті, що сплелися між собою, як терня, і напилися, як п’яниці, вони пожерті будуть зовсім, як суха солома.

Out of thee shall proceed a device against the Lord, counselling evil things hostile to him.	З тебе вийшов той, хто задумав лихе проти Господа, хто склав раду нечестиву.

Thus saith the Lord who rules over many waters, Even thus shall they be sent away, and the report of thee shall not be heard any more.	Так говорить Господь: хоч вони безпечні і численні, але вони будуть посічені і зникнуть; а тебе, хоч Я обтяжував, більше не буду обтяжувати.
13	13
And now will I break his rod from off thee, and will burst thy bonds.	І нині Я розіб’ю ярмо його, яке лежить на тобі, і пута твої розірву.

And the Lord shall give a command concerning thee; there shall no more of thy name be scattered: I will utterly destroy the graven images out of the house of thy god, and the molten images: I will make thy grave; for they are swift.	А про тебе, Ассуре, Господь визначив: не буде більше сімені з твоїм ім’ям; з дому бога твого знищу ідолів і кумирів; приготую тобі у ньому могилу, тому що ти будеш у ганьбі.
Chapter 2	Глава 2

1	1
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings glad tidings, and publishes peace! O Juda, keep thy feasts, pay thy vows: for they shall no more pass through thee to thy decay.	Піднімається на тебе руйнівник: охороняй твердині, стережи дорогу, зміцни стегна, збирайся із силами.

It is all over with him, he has been removed, one who has been delivered from affliction has come up panting into thy presence, watch the way, strengthen thy loins, be very valiant in thy strength.	Бо відновить Господь велич Якова, як велич Ізраїля, тому що спустошили їх спустошувачі і виноградне гілля їх знищили.

For the Lord has turned aside the pride of Jacob, as the pride of Israel: for they have utterly rejected them, and have destroyed their branches.	Щит героїв його красний; воїни його в одежах багряних; вогнем блищать колісниці у день приготування до бою, і ліс списів хвилюється.

And their mighty men shall bethink themselves and flee by day; and they shall be weak as they go; and they shall hasten to her walls, and shall prepare their defences.	Річкові ворота відчиняються, і палац руйнується.

The gates of the cities have been opened, and the palaces have fallen into ruin,	Вирішено: вона буде оголена і відведена у полон, і рабині її будуть стогнати як голуби, б’ючи себе у груди.

and the foundation has been exposed; and she has gone up, and her maid-servants were led away as doves moaning in their hearts.	Ниневія з часу існування свого була як ставок, повний води, а вони біжать. «Стійте, стійте!» Але ніхто не оглядається.

And as for Nineve, her waters shall be as a pool of water: and they fled, and staid not, and there was none to look back.	Розкрадайте срібло, розкрадайте золото! немає кінця запасам усякого дорогоцінного начиння.

They plundered the silver, they plundered the gold, and there was no end of their adorning; they were loaded with it upon all their pleasant vessels.	Розграбована, спустошена і розорена вона, — і тане серце, коліна трясуться; у всіх у стегнах сильний біль, і лиця у всіх потемніли.

There is thrusting forth, and shaking, and tumult, and heart-breaking, and loosing of knees, and pangs on all loins; and the faces of all are as the blackening of a pot.	Де тепер лігво левів і те пасовище для левенят, по якому ходили лев, левиця і левеня, і ніхто не лякав їх, —

Where is the dwelling-place of the lions, and the pasture that belonged to the whelps? where did the lion go, that the lion's whelp should enter in there, and there was none to scare him away?	лев, який викрадає для насичення левенят своїх, і який задушує для левиць своїх, і який наповнює здобиччю печери свої і лігва свої викраденим?

The lion seized enough prey for his whelps, and strangled for his young lions, and filled his lair with prey, and his dwelling-place with spoil.	Ось, Я — на тебе! — говорить Господь Саваоф. І спалю у диму колісниці твої, і меч пожере левенят твоїх, і знищу з землі здобич твою, і не буде більше чутний голос послів твоїх.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord Almighty, and I will burn up thy multitude in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy lions; and I will utterly destroy thy prey from off the land, and thy deeds shall no more at all be heard of.
Chapter 3	Глава 3

1	1
O city of blood, wholly false, full of unrighteousness; the prey shall not be handled.	Горе місту крови! все воно повне обману і вбивства; не припиняється у ньому грабіжництво.
2	2
The noise of whips, and the noise of the rumbling of wheels, and of the pursuing horse, and of the bounding chariot,	Чутні ляскіт бича і стукіт коліс, що крутяться, іржання коня і гуркіт колісниці, що скаче.

and of the mounting rider, and of the glittering sword, and of the gleaming arms, and of a multitude of slain, and of heavy falling: and there was no end to her nations, but they shall be weak in their bodies	Мчить кіннота, виблискує меч і блищать списи; убитих безліч і купи трупів: немає кінця трупам, спотикаються об трупи їх.

because of the abundance of fornication: she is a fair harlot, and well-favoured, skilled in sorcery, that sells the nations by her fornication, and peoples by her sorceries.	Це — за численні блудодіяння розпусниці приємної зовнішности, майстерної у чародійстві, яка блудодіяннями своїми продає народи і чаклуваннями своїми — племена.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord God Almighty, and I will uncover thy skirts in thy presence, and I will shew the nations thy shame, and the kingdoms thy disgrace.	Ось, Я — на тебе! — говорить Господь Саваоф. І підніму на лице твоє краї одягу твого і покажу народам наготу твою і царствам сором твій.

And I will cast abominable filth upon thee according to thine unclean ways, and will make thee a public example.	І закидаю тебе мерзотами, зроблю тебе ганебною і виставлю тебе на позорище.

And it shall be that every one that sees thee shall go down from thee, and shall say, Wretched Nineve! who shall lament for her? whence shall I seek comfort for her?	І буде те, що всякий, побачивши тебе, побіжить від тебе і скаже: «розорена Ниневія! Хто пошкодує за нею? де знайду я утішителів для тебе?»

Prepare thee a portion, tune the chord, prepare a portion for Ammon: she that dwells among the rivers, water is round about her, whose dominion is the sea, and whose walls are water.	Хіба ти краще за Но-Аммона, що знаходиться між ріками, оточений водою, валом якого було море, і море служило стіною його?

And Ethiopia is her strength, and Egypt; and there was no limit of the flight of her enemies; and the Libyans became her helpers.	Ефіопія і Єгипет з незлічимою безліччю інших служили йому підкріпленням; копти і лівійці приходили на допомогу тобі.
10	10
Yet she shall go as a prisoner into captivity, and they shall dash her infants against the ground at the top of all her ways: and they shall cast lots upon all her glorious possessions, and all her nobles shall be bound in chains.	Але і він переселений, пішов у полон; навіть і немовлята його розбиті на перехрестях усіх вулиць, а щодо знатних його кидали жереб, і всі вельможі його закуті ланцюгами.

And thou shalt be drunken, and shalt be overlooked; and thou shalt seek for thyself strength because of thine enemies.	Так і ти – сп’янієш і сховаєшся; так і ти будеш шукати захисту від ворога.
12	12
All thy strong-holds are as fig-trees having watchers: if they be shaken, they shall fall into the mouth of the eater.	Усі укріплення твої подібні до смоковниці зі стиглими плодами: якщо труснути їх, то вони впадуть прямо у рот того, хто бажає їсти.
13	13
Behold, thy people within thee are as women: the gates of thy land shall surely be opened to thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.	Ось, і народ твій, як жінки у тебе: ворогам твоїм навстіж відчиняться ворота землі твоєї, вогонь пожере запори твої.
14	14
Draw thee water for a siege, and well secure thy strong-holds: enter into the clay, and be thou trodden in the chaff, make the fortifications stronger than brick.	Начерпай води на час облоги; зміцнюй укріплення твої; піди у багно, топчи глину, полагоди піч для випалювання цеглин.
15	15
There the fire shall devour thee; the sword shall utterly destroy thee, it shall devour thee as the locust, and thou shalt be pressed down as a palmerworm.	Там пожере тебе вогонь, посіче тебе меч, поїсть тебе, як гусінь, хоч би ти розмножилася, як гусінь, розмножилася, як сарана.
16	16
Thou hast multiplied thy merchandise beyond the stars of heaven: the palmerworm has attacked it, and has flown away.	Купців у тебе стало більше, ніж зірок на небі; але ця сарана розсіється і полетить.
17	17
Thy mixed multitude has suddenly departed as the grasshopper, as the locust perched on a hedge in a frosty day; the sun arises, and it flies off, and knows not its place: woe to them!	Князі твої — як сарана, і воєначальники твої — як рої мошок, які під час холоду гніздяться у щілинах стін, і коли зійде сонце, то розлітаються, і не узнаєш місця, де вони були.

Thy shepherds have slumbered, the Assyrian king has laid low thy mighty men: thy people departed to the mountains, and there was none to receive them.	Сплять пастирі твої, царю Ассирійський, спочивають вельможі твої; народ твій розсіявся по горах, і немає кому зібрати його.
19	19
There is no healing for thy bruise; thy wound has rankled: all that hear the report of thee shall clap their hands against thee; for upon whom has not thy wickedness passed continually?	Немає лікування для рани твоєї, болюча виразка твоя. Усі, хто почув звістку про тебе, будуть плескати у долоні за тебе, бо на кого не простягалася безупинно злість твоя?
