Now Philopater, on learning from those who came back that Antiochus had made himself master of the places which belonged to himself, sent orders to all his footmen and horsemen, took with him his sister Arsinoe, and marched out as far as the parts of Raphia, where Antiochus and his forces encamped.

But Dositheus, called the son of Drimulus, by birth a Jew, afterward a renegade from the laws and observances of his country, conveyed Ptolemy away, and made an obscure person lie down in his stead in the tent. It befel this man to receive the fate which was meant for the other.

A fierce battle then took place; and the men of Antiochus prevailing, Arsinoe continually went up and down the ranks, and with dishevelled hair, with tears and entreaties, begged the soldiers to fight manfully for themselves, their children, and wives; and promised that if they proved conquerors, she would give them two minæ of gold apiece.

И# тaкw супостaтwмъ случи1сz рукосэчeніемъ побэждє1нымъ бhти и3 мнHгимъ плэнє1ннымъ ћтымъ бhти.	It thus fell out that their enemies were defeated in hand-to-hand encounter, and that many of them were taken prisoners.

Получи1въ же намёреніе, суди2 бли6жніz грaды пришeдъ ўтёшити.	Having vanquished this attempt, the king then decided to proceed to the neighbouring cities, and encourage them.

Сотвори1въ же сі‰ и3 кaпищємъ дaры дaвъ, мyжествєнны подр{чныz постaви.	By doing this, and by making donations to their temples, he inspired his subjects with confidence.

Е#гдa же їудeє послaша t пресвЂтєръ и3 старёйшинъ къ філопaтwру поздравлsющихъ є3го2 и3 дaры приносsщихъ и3 њ случи1вшихсz благополyчіихъ срaдующихсz, случи1сz є3мY пaче вожделёти, да скорёе къ ни6мъ пріи1детъ.	The Jews also sent some of their council and of their elders to him. The greetings, guest-gifts, and congratulations on the past, bestowed by them, filled him with the greater eagerness to visit their city.

Пришeдъ же во їеrли1мъ, и3 вели1кому бGу пожрE, и3 благодарeніе воздaвъ, и3 прHчаz, ±же лёть бЁ мёсту, сотвори2.	Having arrived at Jerusalem, sacrificed, and offered thank-offerings to the Greatest God, and done whatever else was suitable to the sanctity of the place, and entered the inner court,

И# вшeдъ на мёсто, и3 худ0жеству и3 благолёпію є3гw2 ўдиви1всz, тaкожде и3 благочи1нію хрaма почуди1всz, съ вожделёніемъ ѕёлнымъ восхотЁ вни1ти во свzти1лище.	he was so struck with the exact magnificence of the place, and so wondered at the orderly arrangements of the temple, that he conceived the purpose of entering the sanctuary itself.

W$нымъ же рeкшымъ, никaкоже подобaетъ бhти семY, занE нижE сyщымъ t р0да нaшегw лёть є4сть входи1ти (тaмw), нижE всBмъ їерewмъ, но т0кмw є3ди1ному пeрвэйшему всёхъ ґрхіерeови, и3 семY є3ди1ножды въ лёто, џнъ же никaкоже восхотЁ послyшати.	And when they told him that this was not permissible, none of the nation, no, nor even the priests in general, but only the supreme high priest of all, and he only once in a year, being allowed to go in, he would by no means give way.

Зак0нъ же презрёвъ, не њстaсz похотёніz своегw2, глаг0лz: подобaетъ вни1ти ми2: ѓще же nни2 и3 лишaютсz сицевhz чeсти, но мнЁ не подобaетъ. И# вопрошaше, чесw2 рaди приходsщу є3мY во всsкое кaпище ни є3ди1нъ возбрани2 t присyщихъ;	Then they read the law to him; but he persisted in obtruding himself, exclaiming, that he ought to be allowed: and saying, Be it that they were deprived of this honour, I ought not to be.

Нёкто же неразсуди1телиw речE: ѕлЁ сaмо сіE чyдо смhслисz. Бhвшу же, речE, семY, к0еz рaди вины2 не всsкw вни1ти ми2 подобaетъ, и3 хотsщымъ и5мъ, и3ли2 ни2;	And he put the question, Why, when he entered all temples, none of the priests who were present forbad him?

Їерewмъ же во свzтhхъ nдeждахъ припaдшымъ и3 молsщымъ вели1каго бGа помощи2 и5мъ въ настоsщей и4хъ нyжди и3 ўстремлeніе ѕлЁ нашeдшагw премэни1ти: и3 внегдA в0плz со слезaми хрaмъ нап0лниша, тогдA, и5же во грaдэ њстaвшіисz возмути1вшесz, и3зскочи1ша, безвёстно мнsще бhти твори1мое.	He was thoughtlessly answered by some one, That he did wrong to boast of this.

Тaкожде и3 заключє1нныz дBвы въ черт0зэхъ съ р0ждшими и3збэг0ша, и3 пeпеломъ и3 прaхомъ главы6 посhпавшz, рыдaніz и3 стенaніz стHгны и3сп0лниша:	Well; since I have done this, said he, be the cause what it may, shall I not enter with or without your consent?

и3ны6z же всецёлw ўкрaшєнныz, на срётеніе ўготHванныz черт0ги и3 подобaющій стhдъ њстaвльшz, течeніе нечи1нное во грaдэ творsху.	And when the priests fell down in their sacred vestments imploring the Greatest God to come and help in time of need, and to avert the violence of the fierce aggressor, and when they filled the temple with lamentations and tears,

И# новорождє1нныz младeнцы, мaтєри же кyпнw и3 дои6лицы њставлsющz сёмw и3 nвaмw, є3ди6ны по домёхъ, друг‡z же по путeхъ, неудeржнw въ превhшнее свzти1лище собирaхусz.	then those who had been left behind in the city were scared, and rushed forth, uncertain of the event.

Бsше же разли1чна моли1тва въ т0е с0бранныхъ њ начинaемыхъ t негw2 беззак0ннw.	Virgins, who had been shut up within their chambers, came out with their mothers, scattering dust and ashes on their heads, and filling the streets with outcries.

Съ си1ми же грaждане дерзнyвше не попускaху є3мY конeчнw належaщу и3 намёреніе своE и3сп0лнити ўмhслившу: и3 возгласи1вше воwружи1тисz комyждо и3 мyжественнэ за nтeческій зак0нъ ўмрeти, вeліе смzтeніе сотвори1ша на мёстэ.	Women, but recently separated off, left their bridal chambers, left the reserve that befitted them, and ran about the city in a disorderly manner.

Е#двa же t старёйшинъ и3 пресвЂтерwвъ ўдeржани, на т0мже молeніz стоsніи стaша.	Newborn babes were deserted by the mothers or nurses who waited upon them; some here, some there, in houses, or in fields; these now, with an ardour which could not be checked, swarmed into the Most High temple.

И# мн0жество ќбw людjй, ћкw и3 прeжде, въ си1хъ пребывaше молsщеесz: ґ и5же при цари2 старBйшины мн0гажды покушaхусz прег0рдый є3гw2 ќмъ премэни1ти t намёреннагw совёта:	Various were the prayers offered up by those who assembled in this place, on account of the unholy attempt of the king.

џнъ же дeрзостенъ бhвъ и3 вс‰ tри1нувъ, ўжE и3 вх0дъ творsше, соверши1ти непщyz предрэчeнное.	Along with these there were some of the citizens who took courage, and would not submit to his obstinacy, and his intention of carrying out his purpose.

Сі‰ u5бо и3 сyщіи при нeмъ зрsще, њбрати1шасz є4же съ нaшими призывaти вс‰ содержaщаго, дабы2 присyтствующымъ пом0глъ, не попускaz беззак0ннагw и3 прег0рдагw дёла.	Calling out to arms, and to die bravely in defence of the law of their fathers, they created a great uproar in the place, and were with difficulty brought back by the aged and the elders to the station of prayer which they had occupied before.

Мнsшесz бо, ћкw не т0кмw человёцы, но и3 стёны и3 вeсь пом0стъ вопіeтъ, ѓки бы ўжE тогдA вси2 смeрть пріимaли за њсквернeніе мёста.	The elders who surrounded the king strove in many ways to divert his haughty mind from the design which he had formed.

Ґрхіерeй u5бо сjмwнъ проти1ву хрaма преклони1въ колBна и3 рyцэ простeръ благочи1ннw, творsше моли1тву сію2:	Now was it that the high priest Simon bowed his knees over against the holy place, and spread out his hands in reverent form, and uttered the following supplication:

гDи, гDи, цRю2 нбcный и3 вLко всsкагw создaніz, с™hй во с™hхъ, є3диноначaлниче, вседержи1телю, вонми2 нaмъ њѕл0блєннымъ t непрепод0бнагw и3 сквeрнагw, продeрзостію и3 си1лою напыщeннагw:	O Lord, Lord, King of the heavens, and Ruler of the whole creation, Holy among the holy, sole Governor, Almighty, give ear to us who are oppressed by a wicked and profane one, who exulteth in his confidence and strength.

тh бо, создaвый вс‰ и3 вс‰ содержaщь, си1ленъ и3 првdнъ є3си2, и3 со ўкори1зною и3 г0рдостію чт0 либо творsщымъ сyдиши:	It is thou, the Creator of all, the Lord of the universe, who art a righteous Governor, and judgest all who act with pride and insolence.

ты2 прeжде беззак0ніе сотв0ршихъ, въ ни1хже и3 и3споли1ни бhша, на си1лу и3 дeрзость ўповaвшіи, погуби1лъ є3си2, навeдъ на ни1хъ безмёрную в0ду:	It was thou who didst destroy the former workers of unrighteousness, among whom were the giants, who trusted in their strength and hardihood, by covering them with a measureless flood.

ты2 прегHрдаz творsщихъ сод0млzнъ, въ ћвныхъ ѕл0бахъ бhвшихъ, nгнeмъ и3 жyпеломъ попали1лъ є3си2, w4бразъ по ни1хъ бyдущымъ состaвль:	It was thou who didst make the Sodomites, those workers of exceeding iniquity, men notorious for their vices, an example to after generations, when thou didst consume them with fire and brimstone.

ты2 свирёпаго фараHна поработи1вшаго лю1ди тво‰ с™ы6z ї}лz, разли1чными и3 мн0гими и3скуси1лъ є3си2 мyками, показaвъ си1лу твою2,	Thou didst make known thy power when thou causedst the bold Pharaoh, the enslaver of thy people, to pass through the ordeal of many and diverse inflictions.

и3 во џнэхъ вeлію держaву твою2 kви1лъ є3си2, и3 гонsщаго є3го2 съ колесни1цами и3 нар0дwвъ мн0жествомъ погрузи1лъ є3си2 во глубинЁ морстёй, вёрующихъ же тебЁ, всsкимъ создaніемъ њбладaющему, неврє1дны превeлъ є3си2: и5же и3 ви1дэвше дэлA твоеS руки2, восхвали1ша тебE вседержи1телz:	And thou rolledst the depths of the sea over him, when he made pursuit with chariots, and with a multitude of followers, and gavest a safe passage to those who put their trust in thee, the Lord of the whole creation.

ты2, цRю2, создaвый безконeчную и3 безмёрную зeмлю, и3збрaлъ є3си2 грaдъ сeй и3 њс™и1лъ є3си2 мёсто сіE во и4мz тебЁ ничт0же трeбующему, и3 прослaвилъ є3си2 во kвлeніи великолёпнэмъ, составлeніе сотвори1вый є3гw2 ко слaвэ вели1кагw и3 честнaгw и4мене твоегw2:	These saw and felt the works of thine hands, and praised thee the Almighty.

и3 лю1бzщь д0мъ ї}левъ, њбэщaлъ є3си2, ћкw ѓще бyдетъ нaмъ ѕлоключeніе и3 њб8и1метъ нaсъ тэснотA, и3 пришeдше на мёсто сіE пом0лимсz, ўслhшиши моли1тву нaшу:	Thou, O King, when thou createdst the illimitable and measureless earth, didst choose out this city: thou didst make this place sacred to thy name, albeit thou needest nothing: thou didst glorify it with thy illustrious presence, after constructing it to the glory of thy great and honourable name.

и3 ќбw вёренъ є3си2 и3 и4стиненъ, ґ понeже мн0гащи њскорблє1ннымъ бhвшымъ nтцє1мъ нaшымъ, пом0глъ є3си2 и5мъ ты2 во смирeніи и3 и3збaвилъ є3си2 \| t вели1кихъ бёдъ:	And thou didst promise, out of love to the house of Israel, that should we fall away from thee, and become afflicted, and then come to this house and pray, thou wouldest hear our prayer.

сE u5бо нн7э, с™hй цRю2, мн0гихъ рaди и3 вели1кихъ нaшихъ грэхHвъ стрaждемъ, и3 повинyемсz врагHмъ нaшымъ, и3 є3смы2 въ нeмощехъ:	Verily thou art faithful and true.

въ нaшемъ же низпадeніи дeрзостивый и3 сквeрный сeй начинaетъ њби1дэти на земли2 возвhшенное и4мени слaвы твоеS с™0е мёсто:	And whereas thou didst often aid our fathers when hard pressed, and in low estate, and deliveredst them out of great dangers,

ѓще бо и3 жили1ще твоE нб7о нб7сE непости1жно человёкwмъ є4сть, но понeже бlговоли1лъ є3си2 слaву твою2 въ лю1дехъ твои1хъ ї}ли, њс™и1лъ є3си2 мёсто сіE:	see now, holy King, how through our many and great sins we are borne down, and made subject to our enemies, and are become weak and powerless.

да не tмсти1ши нaмъ нечистот0ю си1хъ, нижE да накaжеши нaсъ сквeрною си1хъ: да не похвaлzтсz пребеззак0нніи въ ћрости своeй, нижE да возрaдуютсz въ г0рдости љзhка своегw2, глаг0люще: мы2 попрaхомъ хрaмъ с™hни, ћкоже попирaютсz хрaмы мeрзостей:	We being in this low condition, this bold and profane man seeks to dishonour this thy holy place, consecrated out of the earth to the name of thy Majesty.

њстaви грэхи2 нaшz и3 разруши2 непрaвwсти нaшz и3 kви2 млcть твою2 въ чaсъ сeй, ск0рw да предварsтъ ны2 щедрHты тво‰, и3 дaждь хвалє1ніz во ўстA низпaдшихъ и3 сокрушeнныхъ душaми, сотвори1вый нaмъ ми1ръ.	Thy dwelling-place, the heaven of heavens, is indeed unapproachable to men.

ЗдЁ всеви1децъ бGъ и3 прeжде всёхъ с™hй во с™hхъ, ўслhшавъ моли1тву смирeніz, хул0ю и3 дeрзостію вельми2 вознесeннаго ўzзви2, tсю1ду и3 toнyду сотрsсъ є3го2, ћкоже тр0сть вётромъ, ћкw и3 на пом0стэ недэйстви1телну ктомY лежaти и3 ќдами разслaбленну, нижE прогласи1ти возмощи2 є3мY, прaведнымъ ўsзвленну суд0мъ.	But since it seemed good to thee to exhibit thy glory among thy people Israel, thou didst sanctify this place.

Tню1дуже дрyзи и3 тёла є3гw2 њхрани1телє внезaпную и3 џструю ви1дэвше њб8eмшую є3го2 кaзнь, ўбоsвшесz, да и3 животA не лиши1тсz, вск0рэ є3го2 и3звлек0ша в0нъ, превели1кимъ ўsзвленни стрaхомъ.	Punish us not by means of the uncleanness of their men, nor chastise us by means of their profanity; lest the lawless ones should boast in their rage, and exult in exuberant pride of speech, and say,

По врeмени же пришeдъ въ себE, никaкоже въ покаsніе пріи1де накaзанный и3 съ прещeніемъ г0рькимъ tи1де.	We have trampled upon the holy house, as idolatrous houses are trampled upon.

Пришeдъ же во є3гЂпетъ и3 ѕл0бу ўмножaющь чрез8 предрэчeнныхъ притрапeзникwвъ и3 другHвъ t всsкіz прaвды tлучeнныхъ, не т0кмw безчи1сленными студодэ‰ніи дов0лствовасz, но и3 на толи1кую дeрзость произhде, ћкw хулє1ніz на мёстэхъ состaви, и3 мн0зи дрyзи взирaюще на цaрское хотёніе, и3 тjи послёдоваша џнагw в0ли.	Blot out our iniquities, and do away with our errors, and shew forth thy compassion in this hour.

И# предложи2 цaрь нар0днэ на kзhкъ їудeйскій и3здaти хулY: и3 повелёвъ на столпЁ сyщемъ при дворЁ постaвити јдwла, и3зваS писaніе: є4же ни є3ди1ному t нежрyщихъ во свzт†z и4хъ входи1ти, всёхъ же їудeєвъ вписaти въ лю1ди прwстhz и3 въ служeбный чи1нъ постaвити, сопроти1въ же глаг0лющихъ нyждею ћтыхъ животA лиши1ти.	Let thy mercies quickly go before us. Grant us peace, that the cast down and broken hearted may praise thee with their mouth.

Тёхже запи1санныхъ назнaменовати и3 nгнeмъ на тёлэ знамени1тымъ діонЂса кjссовымъ лист0мъ, и3 тёхъ tлучи1ти въ преждесокращeнную своб0ду.	At that time God, who seeth all things, who is beyond all Holy among the holy, heard that prayer, so suitable; and scourged the man greatly uplifted with scorn and insolence.

Но да не всBмъ ненави1димь kви1тсz, подписA: ѓще же нёцыи t ни1хъ произв0лzтъ жи1телствовати во њбрsдэхъ kзhческихъ, сjи рaвни грaжданwмъ ґлеxандр‡йскимъ бyдутъ.	Shaking him to and fro as a reed is shaken with the wind, he cast him upon the pavement, powerless, with limbs paralyzed; by a righteous judgment deprived of the faculty of speech.

Тёмже u5бо нёцыи во грaдэ, благочє1стіz сво‰ ни во чт0же вмэнsюще, съ рaдостію себE вдaша, мнsще себE ѓки вeліей нёкоей и3мyщіи приwбщи1тисz слaвэ t бyдущагw со царeмъ сожи1телства.	His friends and body-guards, beholding the swift recompense which had suddenly overtaken him, struck with exceeding terror, and fearing that he would die, speedily removed him.

Мн0жайшіи же хрaброю душeю ўкрэпи1шасz и3 не tступи1ша t благочeстіz: и3 срeбреники за жив0тъ њбэщaвше во и3змэнeніе дaти, безбоsзненнw тщaхусz свободи1ти себE t вписaній: благонадeжни бhша п0мощь получи1ти,	When in course of time he had come to himself, this severe check caused no repentance within him, but he departed with bitter threatenings.

ґ tлучи1вшихсz t ни1хъ гнушaхусz, и3 ѓки супостaтwвъ р0ду своемY суди1ша, и3 џбщагw сожи1телства и3 благодэsніz лишaху.	He proceeded to Egypt, grew worse in wickedness through his beforementioned companions in wine, who were lost to all goodness;

Сі‰ ўвёдавъ нечести1вый въ толи1ко разгнёваніе пріи1де, ћкw не т0кмw на сyщихъ во ґлеxандрjи разгнёвасz, но и3 сyщымъ во странЁ тsжцэ сопроти1висz и3 повелЁ тщaтелнэ всёхъ собрaти въ кyпу и3 лютёйшею смeртію животA лиши1ти.	On discovering this, so incensed was the wicked king, that he no longer confined his rage to the Jews in Alexandria. Laying his hand more heavily upon those who lived in the country, he gave orders that they should be quickly collected into one place, and most cruelly deprived of their lives.

Си6мъ же ўстр0єнымъ бhвшымъ, вёсть ѕлaz происхождaше на р0дъ (їудeйскій), человёкwмъ согласyющымъ на ѕлотворeніе, є3гдA винA дадeсz ко ўставлeнію, ѓки бы и5мъ возбранsли t зак0нwвъ.	While this was going on, an invidious rumour was uttered abroad by men who had banded together to injure the Jewish race. The purport of their charge was, that the Jews kept them away from the ordinances of the law.

Но їудeє бёху сохранsюще ко царє1мъ ќбw неразврaтное послушaніе и3 вёрность, чествyюще же бGа и3 зак0на є3гw2 держaшесz, tлучeніе творsху въ нёкіихъ и3 tмBны: є3sже рaди вины2 нBкіимъ ненави1дими kвлsхусz: прaведныхъ же благотворeніемъ ўкрашaюще сожи1телство, всBмъ человёкwмъ благопріsтни сотвори1шасz.	Now, while the Jews always maintained a feeling of unswerving loyalty towards the kings,

Тёмже u5бо њ р0дэ во всёхъ слaвимое благотворeніе и3ноплемє1нницы ни во что2 вмэнsху, разли1чіе же въ поклонeніихъ и3 брaшнахъ разглашaху, глаг0люще, ћкw сjи человёцы нижE царю2, нижE в0ємъ соглaсни сyть, но враждeбни сyть и3 вельми2 нёкакw дэлHмъ проти1вни: и3 нестерпи1мымъ њгласи1ша и5хъ хулeніемъ.	yet, as they worshipped God, and observed his law, they made certain distinctions, and avoided certain things. Hence some persons held them in odium;

Е$ллини же сyщіи во грaдэ ни чи1мъ њби1дими t ни1хъ, ви1дzще смzтeніе нечazнное на ни1хъ и3 собр†ніz внезaпнw быв†ющаz, помощи2 ќбw не мог0ша: мучи1телское бо бsше повелёніе.	although, as they adorned their conversation with works of righteousness, they had established themselves in the good opinion of the world.

Ўтэшaху же и3 негодовaху и3 минyти си6мъ вск0рэ непщевaху, и4бо не бyдетъ тaкw презрёно толи1кое мн0жество ничт0же согрэши1вшее.	What all the rest of mankind said, was, however, made of no account by the foreigners;

И# ўжE нёцыи сосёди и3 дрyзи и3 сокупeчствующіи, тaйнw нёкіихъ призвaвше, вёрность даsху помогaти и3 всsкое ўсeрдіе твори1ти къ защищeнію.	who said much of the exclusiveness of the Jews with regard to their worship and meats; they alleged that they were men unsociable, hostile to the king's interests, refusing to associate with him or his troops. By this way of speaking, they brought much odium upon them.

и3 сyщымъ во градёхъ кaпищємъ дaвше дох0ды премнHги, пріид0хомъ и3 во їеrли1мъ, возшeдше почти1ти хрaмъ суемyдренныхъ и3 никогдaже престаю1щихъ t безyміz:	Now the king, elated with his prosperous fortune, and not regarding the superior power of God, but thinking to persevere in his present purpose, wrote the following letter to the prejudice of the Jews.

So, having bestowed considerable sums of money upon the temples of the several cities, we proceeded even as far as Jerusalem; and went up to honour the temple of these wretched beings who never cease from their folly.

And thus, exhibiting their enmity against us, they alone among the nations lift up their heads against kings and benefactors, as men unwilling to submit to any thing reasonable.

ѓще же кто2 возвэсти1тъ, сeй пріи1метъ и3мёніе подпaдшагw кaзни, є3щe же и3 t цaрскагw сребрA дрaхмъ двЁ тhсzщы, и3 своб0ду получи1тъ, и3 ўвэнчaетсz:	Accordingly, bearing no ill-will against their kinsmen at Jerusalem, but rather remembering our connection with them, and the numerous matters with sincere heart from a remote period entrusted to them, we wished to venture a total alteration of their state, by bestowing upon them the rights of citizens of Alexandria, and to admit them to the everlasting rites of our solemnities.

И# вездЁ, и3дёже пріи1де сіE повелёніе, нар0днэ составлsшесz kзhкwмъ ќбw пи1ръ съ восклицaньми и3 рaдостію, ѓки бы заматерёлаz и3здрeвле въ мhсли и4хъ, нн7э съ дeрзостію kвлsласz враждA:	Wherever this decree was received, the people kept up a revelry of joy and shouting; as if their long-pent-up, hardened hatred, were now to shew itself openly.

їудewмъ же бsше непрестаю1щь плaчь и3 ѕэлw2 рыдaтеленъ со слезaми в0пль, стенaньми сожжeнну сyщу сeрдцу и4хъ tвсю1ду, рыдaющихъ њ нечazннэй внезaпу ўстaвленнэй на ни1хъ поги1бели.	The Jews suffered great throes of sorrow, and wept much; while their hearts, all things around being lamentable, were set on fire as they bewailed the sudden destruction which was decreed against them.

Си1це бо съ г0рькою и3 немилосeрдою душeю t страти1гwвъ сyщихъ по градHмъ є3динодyшнw и3зсылaеми бsху (ко царю2), ћкw њ неwбhчныхъ мучeніихъ, и3 нёцыи t врагHвъ взeмлюще пред8 nчесA џбщую бёдность и3 помышлsюще неизвёстную житіS и3змёну, (да не когдA и3 и5мъ случи1тсz сіE,) плaкаху њ пребёдственнэмъ и4хъ и3зслaніи.	They were sent out unanimously by the generals in the several cities, with such stern and pitiless feeling, that the exceptional nature of the infliction moved even some of their enemies. These, influenced by sentiments of common humanity, and reflecting upon the uncertain issue of life, shed tears at this their miserable expulsion.

A multitude of aged hoary-haired men, were driven along with halting bending feet, urged onward by the impulse of a violent, shameless force to quick speed.

Girls who had entered the bridal chamber quite lately, to enjoy the partnership of marriage, exchanged pleasure for misery; and with dust scattered upon their myrrh-anointed heads, were hurried along unveiled, and, in the midst of outlandish insults, set up with one accord a lamentable cry in lieu of the marriage hymn.

Супрyзи же си1хъ въ цвэтyщемъ ю4ношестэмъ в0зрастэ, ќжами вмёстw вэнцє1въ на шjzхъ њплетeни, вмёстw пи1ршества и3 ю4ношескагw ўпокоeніz пр0чыz дни6 брaка въ рыдaніихъ провождaху, при ногaхъ ўжE ви1дzще ѓдъ лежaщь.	Bound, and exposed to public gaze, they were hurried violently on board ship.

Ведeни же бhша ѕвэри1нымъ w4бразомъ, влек0ми во ќзахъ желёзныхъ нyждныхъ: и3 џви ќбw къ сэдaлищємъ корaблєнымъ пригвождeни бhша шjzми, и3нjи же за н0ги нерастeрзными пyтами ўкрэплeни, є3щe же и3 свeрху чaстыми дщи1цами њбложeнными t свёта заключeни, ћкw да tвсю1ду помрачeни nчесы2, поведeніе ѓки навBтницы во всeмъ плaваніи и3мёютъ.	The husbands of these, in the prime of their youthful vigour, instead of crowns wore halters round their necks; instead of feasting and youthful jollity, spent the rest of their nuptial days in wailings, and saw only the grave at hand.

Си6мъ же на глаг0лемую ладію2 приведє1нымъ бhвшымъ, и3 плaванію соверши1вшусz, ћкоже бЁ повелёно t царS, повелЁ и5хъ пред8 грaдомъ на конористaтелнэмъ мёстэ постaвити, на вели1цэмъ прострaнствэ, и3 на поругaніе вельми2 ўг0днэмъ всBмъ входsщымъ во грaдъ, тaкожде и3 tтyду во странY посылaємымъ ко и3зшeствію: да нижE съ в0zми є3гw2 соwбщaютсz, нижE tню1дъ спод0бzтсz к0егw покр0ва.	They were dragged along by unyielding chains, like wild beasts: of these, some had their necks thrust into the benches of the rowers; while the feet of others were enclosed in hard fetters.

Е#гдa же бhсть сіE, ўслhшавъ (цaрь), ћкw нёцыи t р0да и4хъ и3з8 грaда тaйнw и3схождaху чaстw њплaкивати безчeстную брaтіи бёдность, разгнёвавсz ѕёлw, повелЁ со прилэжaніемъ и3 си6мъ тaкожде ћкоже и3 џнэмъ сотвори1ти, да никaкоже мeншую џнэхъ воз8имёютъ мyку, и3 написaти всsко колёно по и4мени:	The planks of the deck above them barred out the light, and shut out the day on every side, so that they might be treated like traitors during the whole voyage.

не къ мaлw преждеwб8sвленнэй многотрyднэй раб0тэ, но ўмyченныхъ повелёнными кaзньми, въ конeцъ и3стреби1ти во врeмz є3ди1нагw днE.	They were conveyed accordingly in this vessel, and at the end of it arrived at Schedia. The king had ordered them to be cast into the vast hippodrome, which was built in front of the city. This place was well adapted by its situation to expose them to the gaze of all comers into the city, and of those who went from the city into the country. Thus they could hold no communication with his forces; nay, were deemed unworthy of any civilized accommodation.

When this was done, the king, hearing that their brethren in the city often went out and lamented the melancholy distress of these victims,

Цaрь же непрестaннw рaдостію вельми2 и3сполнszсz, пи1ршєства ў всёхъ јдwлwвъ составлsz, заблуждeнымъ далeче t и4стины рaзумомъ и3 сквeрными ўсты6, нэм†z ќбw и3 не мог{щаz глаг0лати и5мъ и3ли2 помощи2 похвалsz, на превели1каго же бGа неподоб†ющаz глаг0лz.	was full of rage, and commanded that they should be carefully subjected to the same (and not one whit milder) treatment.

По предрэчeннэмъ же врeмене разстоsніи, возвэсти1ша кни1жницы царю2, ћкw никaкоже ктомY м0гутъ њписaніе їудє1й сотвори1ти, безчи1сленнагw рaди и4хъ мн0жества, и3 понeже сyть є3щE премн0зи по странaмъ, и3нjи же по домHмъ њбрэтaютсz, ґ и3нjи по мэстHмъ, ћкw не возмощи2 tню1дъ всBмъ, и5же во є3гЂптэ, страти1гwмъ сотвори1ти сегw2.	The whole nation was now to be registered. Every individual was to be specified by name; not for that hard servitude of labour which we have a little before mentioned, but that he might expose them to the before-mentioned tortures; and finally, in the short space of a day, might extirpate them by his cruelties.

Е#гдa же цaрь запрети2 и5мъ жесточaе, ѓки дарaми подкyплєнымъ на ковaрство и3збэжaніz, случи1сz и5мъ и3звёстнэ є3го2 њ сeмъ ўвёрити, глаг0лющымъ съ показaніемъ, ћкw и3 хартіи6 ўжE и3 писaтєлныz трHсти, и5хже ўпотреблsху, њскудёша.	The registering of these men was carried on cruelly, zealously, assiduously, from the rising of the sun to its going down, and was not brought to an end in forty days.

Сіe же бЁ дёйство помогaющагw їудeємъ съ нб7сE пр0мысла непобэди1магw (б9іz).	The king was filled with great and constant joy, and celebrated banquets before the temple idols. His erring heart, far from the truth, and his profane mouth, gave glory to idols, deaf and incapable of speaking or aiding, and uttered unworthy speech against the Greatest God.

Then he called Hermon, who had charge of the elephants. Full of rage, altogether fixed in his furious design,

Сі‰ же повелёвъ возврати1сz на пи1ршество, собрaвъ наипaче тёхъ другHвъ и3 в0инwвъ, и5же ненави1дzху їудewвъ: ґ слононачaлникъ є4рмwнъ повелённое прили1чнw совершaше.	he commanded him, with a quantity of unmixed wine and handfuls of incense infused to drug the elephants early on the following day. These five hundred elephants were, when infuriated by the copious draughts of frankincense, to be led up to the execution of death upon the Jews.

Къ си6мъ же слузи2 въ вeчеръ и3сходsще вzзaху рyцэ бёдныхъ и3 пр0чую ўхищрsху њ ни1хъ стрaжу, мнsще, ћкw въ нощи2 пріи1мутъ їудeє вкyпэ конeчную поги1бель.	The king, after issuing these orders, went to his feasting, and gathered together all those of his friends and of the army who hated the Jews the most.

Їудeє же всsкагw покр0ва лишeни бhти непщyеми kзhкwмъ, рaди њб8eмшіz и5хъ tвсю1ду во ќзахъ нyжды, вседержи1телz гDа и3 всsкою си1лою њбладaющаго млcтиваго бGа своего2 и3 nц7A непрестaннымъ в0племъ вси2 со слезaми призывaху молsщесz, да совётъ непрaведный, и4же на ни1хъ, премэни1тъ и3 и3збaвитъ и5хъ t сyщіz пред8 ногaма ўгот0ванныz смeрти съ великолёпнымъ kвлeніемъ.	The master of the elephants, Hermon, fulfilled his commission punctually.

Си1хъ ќбw прилёжнаz моли1тва взhде на нб7о: є4рмwнъ же неукроти1мыхъ слонHвъ напои1въ и3сп0лненныхъ подаsніемъ мн0гагw вінA и3 лівaномъ напитaвъ, рaнw во дв0ръ пріи1де њ си1хъ возвэсти1ти царю2.	The underlings appointed for the purpose went out about eventide and bound the hands of the miserable victims, and took other precautions for their security at night, thinking that the whole race would perish together.

T вёчнагw же врeмене благ0е создaніе въ нощи2 и3 во дни2 подавaемое t бlгодётелствующагw всBмъ, и5мже ѓще сaмъ х0щетъ, снA чaсть послA царю2.	The heathen believed the Jews to be destitute of all protection; for chains fettered them about.

Сладчaйшимъ же и3 глуб0кимъ њдержи1мь бЁ дёйствіемъ вLки, њ беззак0ннэмъ ќбw предложeніи мн0гw прельсти1сz, въ непрел0жнэмъ же совётэ ѕёлнэ њбольщeнъ бhсть.	They invoked the Almighty Lord, and ceaselessly besought with tears their merciful God and Father, Ruler of all, Lord of every power,

Їудeє же предназнaменованнагw часA и3збэжaвше, с™aго бGа своего2 восхвалsху, и3 пaки молsху бlгопримири1телнаго, да покaжетъ великом0щныz своеS руки2 держaву kзhкwмъ прегHрдымъ.	to overthrow the evil purpose which was gone out against them, and to deliver them by extraordinary manifestation from that death which was in store for them.

Преполовлsющусz же ўжE ѓки десsтому часY, и4же ко звaнію ўчинeнный, ви1дz звaнныхъ собрaвшихсz, пришeдъ ко царю2 толкнY, и3 є3двA возбуди1въ є3го2, показA пи1ра врeмz преходsщее ўжE, њ си1хъ сл0во предложи1въ: є4же цaрь (въ себЁ) размhсливъ и3 њбрaщьсz на пи1ръ, повелЁ пришeдшымъ на пи1ръ комyждо проти1ву себє2 возлещи2.	Their litany so earnest went up to heaven.

Е#гдa же бhсть сіE, поwщрsше въ пировaніе вдaвшихсz, дабы2 настоsщую пи1ршества чaсть попремн0гу прaзднующе въ весeліи препроводи1ли.	Then Hermon, who had filled his merciless elephants with copious draughts of mingled wine and frankincense, came early to the palace to certify the king thereof.

Мн0зэй же бесёдэ бhвшей, цaрь є4рмwна призвaвъ, съ г0рькимъ прещeніемъ вопрошaше, к0еz рaди вины2 њстaвлени їудeє въ сeй дeнь жи1ви бhти;	He, however, who has sent his good creature sleep from all time, by night or by day thus gratifying whom he wills, diffused a portion thereof now upon the king.

Џному же показaвшу, ћкw н0щію повелённое въ конeцъ приведE, ксемy же и3 другHмъ спослyшествовавшымъ семY бhти тaкw, свирёпство лютёйшо пaче фаларjда и3мёz, речE: днeшнему снY благодaрство да и4мутъ:	By this sweet and profound influence of the Lord he was held fast, and thus his unjust purpose was quite frustrated, and his unflinching resolve greatly falsified.

тh же непрел0жнэ во грzдyщій дeнь по прeжнему ўгот0ви слоны2 въ погублeніе беззак0нныхъ їудeєвъ.	But the Jews, having escaped the hour which had been fixed, praised their holy God, and again prayed him who is easily reconciled to display the power of his powerful hand to the overweening Gentiles.

Сі‰ же рeкшу царю2, любeзнэ вси2 съ рaдостію присyтствующіи кyпнw восхвали1вше, кjйждо въ д0мъ св0й tид0ша: и3 не тaкw на с0нъ и3знури1ша врeмz нощн0е, ћкw на ўхищрeніе всsкихъ поругaній мни6мымъ њка‰ннымъ.	The middle of the tenth hour had well nigh arrived, when the master-bidder, seeing the guests who were bidden collected, came and shook the king.

Е#гдa же ґлeктwръ возгласи2 ќтренній, и3 ѕвBри воwружи1въ є4рмwнъ на вели1цэмъ дворЁ поwщрsше: во грaдэ же мн0жество нар0да собрaшасz на жaлостное поз0рище, њжидaюще ќтра со тщaніемъ.	He gained his attention with difficulty, and hinting that the mealtime was getting past, talked the matter over with him.

Їудeє же безпрестaннw t души2 стенsще, многослeзную моли1тву съ плачeвными пёсньми (творsху) простирaюще рyцэ на нeбо, молsху вели1каго бGа пaки и5мъ помощи2 вск0рэ.	The king listened to this, and then turning aside to his potations, commanded the guests to sit down before him.

Е#щe же с0лнечніи лучи6 не разсёzшасz, и3 царю2 другHвъ пріeмлющу, є4рмwнъ предстaвъ звaше ко и3схождeнію, показyz превозжелённое царeмъ гот0во бhти.	This done, he asked them to enjoy themselves, and to indulge in mirth at this somewhat late hour of the banquet.

Conversation grew on, and the king sent for Hermon, and enquired of him, with fierce denunciations, why the Jews had been allowed to outlive that day.

Lose no time, and get ready the elephants against to-morrow, as you did before, for the destruction of these accursed Jews.

When the king said this, the company present were glad, and approved; and then each man went to his own home.

But this was the working of that Almighty God who had made him forget all his purpose.

The king was filled with fierce anger at these words; for, by the Providence of God regarding these things, his mind had become entirely confused. He looked hard at Hermon, and threatened him as follows:

да не сyетными суемyдренніи похвaлzтсz њ погублeніи возлю1бленныхъ твои1хъ, глаг0люще: нижE бGъ и4хъ и3збaви и5хъ:	And now, thou who hatest insolence; thou who dost abound in mercy; thou who art the protector of all things; appear quickly to those of the race of Israel, who are insulted by abhorred, lawless Gentiles.

да ўдивsтсz нн7э kзhцы непобэди1мэй крёпости твоeй, пречcтне, и3мёzй си1лу њ спcніи р0да їaкwвлz:	Thou who art All-powerful and Almighty, O Eternal One, behold! have mercy upon us who are being withdrawn from life, like traitors, by the unreasoning insolence of lawless men.

Let it be shewn to all the nations that thou art with us, O Lord, and hast not turned thy face away from us; but as thou saidst that thou wouldst not forget them even in the land of their enemies, so do thou fulfil this saying, O Lord.

Then the all-glorious, all-powerful, and true God, displayed his holy countenance, and opened the gates of heaven, from which two angels, dreadful of form, came down, and were visible to all but the Jews.

Who has gathered here, unreasonably removing each from his home, those who, in fidelity to us, had held the fortresses of the country?

Who has thus consigned to unmerited punishments those who in good will towards us from the beginning have in all things surpassed all nations, and who often have engaged in the most dangerous undertakings?

Loose, loose the unjust bonds; send them to their homes in peace, and deprecate what has been done.

Release the sons of the almighty living God of heaven, who from our ancestors' times until now has granted a glorious and uninterrupted prosperity to our affairs.

И# њстaвивше рыдaніz всеплачeвную пёснь, воспріsша пёснь nтeческую, хвaлzще сп7си1телz и3 чудодётелz бGа: и3 всsкій плaчь и3 стенaніе tри1нувше, ли1ки состaвиша во знaменіе весeліz ми1рнагw.	These things he said: and they, released the same moment, having now escaped death, praised God their holy Saviour.

The king then departed to the city, and called his financier to him, and bade him provide a seven days' quantity of wine and other materials for feasting for the Jews. He decided that they should keep a gladsome festival of deliverance in the very place in which they expected to meet with their destruction.

Then they who were before despised and nigh unto Hades, yea, rather advanced into it, partook of the cup of salvation, instead of a grievous and lamentable death. Full of exultation, they parted out the place intended for their fall and burial into banqueting booths.

Їудeє же, ћкоже предрек0хомъ, состaвивше предрэчeнный ли1къ, со ўчреждeніемъ во и3сповёданіихъ весeлыхъ и3 pалмёхъ провождaху,	Ceasing their miserable strain of woe, they took up the subject of their fatherland, hymning in praise God their wonder-working Saviour. All groans, all wailing, were laid aside: they formed dances in token of serene joy.

So, also, the king collected a number of guests for the occasion, and returned unceasing thanks with much magnificence for the unexpected deliverance afforded him.

Пріид0ша же ко царю2 просsще tпущeніz во сво‰ си.	Those who had marked them out as for death and for carrion, and had registered them with joy, howled aloud, and were clothed with shame, and had the fire of their rage ingloriously put out.

But the Jews, as we just said, instituted a dance, and then gave themselves up to feasting, glad thanksgivings, and psalms.

They made a public ordinance to commemorate these things for generations to come, as long as they should be sojourners. They thus established these days as days of mirth, not for the purpose of drinking or luxury, but because God had saved them.

Such, they said, was the hatred borne by the Jews to all other people.

мh же њ си1хъ жесточaе запрети1вше по смиренномyдрію, є4же и4мамы ко всBмъ человёкwмъ, є3двA жив0тъ и5мъ даровaвше, и3 нбcнаго бGа познaвше крёпкw заступaющаго їудeєвъ и3 ћкw nц7A за сhны вhну споб0рствующа, ксемy же и3 люб0вь, ю4же и4мутъ къ нaмъ и3звёстну, и3 ко прароди1телємъ нaшымъ благопріsтство разсуди1вше, прaведнw tпусти1хомъ, по всsкому коеs либо вины2 w4бразу:	They brought them fettered in grievous chains as slaves, nay, as traitors. Without enquiry or examination they endeavoured to annihilate them. They buckled themselves with a savage cruelty, worse than Scythian custom.

и3 повелёхомъ комyждо всBмъ во сво‰ и5мъ возврати1тисz, дабы2 на всsцэмъ мёстэ никто2 и4хъ tню1дъ њѕлоблsлъ, нижE ўкарsлъ њ содёzнныхъ и5мъ без8 вины2:	For this cause we severely threatened them; yet, with the clemency which we are wont to extend to all men, we at length permitted them to live. Finding that the God of heaven cast a shield of protection over the Jews so as to preserve them, and that he fought for them as a father always fights for his sons;

вёдомо бо да бyдетъ вaмъ, ћкw ѓще что2 ѕлоухи1тримъ на ни1хъ лукaвое, и3ли2 въ чeмъ њскорби1мъ и5хъ весьмA, то2 не человёка, но всёхъ си1лъ вLку и3 бGа вhшнzго проти1вzщасz нaмъ во tмщeніе вещeй по всемY неизбёжнэ всегдA и3мёти бyдемъ. Здрaвствуйте.	and taking into consideration their constancy and fidelity towards us and towards our ancestors, we have, as we ought, acquitted them of every sort of charge.

Пріи1мше же (їудeє t царS) послaніе сіE, не потщaшасz вск0рэ tити2, но моли1ша царS, дабы2 сyщіи t р0да їудeйска, t с™aгw бGа и3 t зак0на б9іz самов0льнэ tступи1вшіи получи1ли и4ми д0лжное мучeніе,	And we have dismissed them to their several homes; bidding all men everywhere to do them no wrong, or unrighteously revile them about the past.

приглаг0лавше, ћкw чрeва рaди своегw2 бжcтвєннаz повєлёніz преступи1вшіи нижE ц†рскимъ повелёніємъ благопослyшни бyдутъ.	For know ye, that should we conceive any evil design against, or in any manner aggrieve them, we shall ever have as our opposite, not man, but the highest God, the ruler of all might. From Him there will be no escape, as the avenger of such deeds. Fare ye well.

Џнъ же пои1стиннэ сі‰ глаг0ла тaкw бhти, и3 похвали1въ дадE и5мъ влaсть над8 всёми, є4же бы престyпникwвъ зак0на б9іz во всёхъ мёстэхъ цaрствіz є3гw2 со дерзновeніемъ, без8 всsкіz цaрскіz влaсти и3ли2 разсмотрeніz, ўбивaти и3 и3скоренsти.	When they had received this letter, they were not forward to depart immediately. They petitioned the king to be allowed to inflict fitting punishment upon those of their race who had willingly transgressed the holy God, and the law of God.

ТогдA (їудeє) возблагодари1вше (царS) ћкоже подобaше, їерeє же и4хъ и3 всE мн0жество вкyпэ возгласи1вше ґллилyіа, съ рaдостію tид0ша.	They alleged that men who had for their bellies' sake transgressed the ordinances of God, would never be faithful to the interests of the king.

ТогдA приклю1чшагосz на пути2 престyпника, и4же бsше t р0да и4хъ, мyчаху и3 во w4бразъ и3ны6мъ ўбивaху.	The king admitted the truth of this reasoning, and commended them. Full power was given them, without warrant or special commission, to destroy those who had transgressed the law of God boldly in every part of the king's dominions.

И# въ дeнь т0й ўби1ша б0лэе тріeхъ сHтъ мужeй, ўбивaюще же сквeрныхъ съ рaдостію веселsхусz.	Their priests, then, as it was meet, saluted him with good wishes, and all the people echoed with the Hallelujah. They then joyfully departed.

Сaми же и5же дaже до смeрти со гDемъ бGомъ пребhша, получи1вше совершeнное сп7сeніе, ўвэнчaвше себE разли1чными благов0ннэйшими цвэтaми, tид0ша t грaда со весeліемъ и3 восклицaніемъ, во хвалeніихъ и3 всеблагоглaсныхъ пёніихъ благодарsще бGу nтцє1въ и4хъ вёчному, сп7су ї}леву.	Then they punished and destroyed with ignominy every polluted Jew that fell in their way;
15	15
Пришeдше же во птолемаjду, нарицaемую за св0йство мёста родоф0ръ, и3дёже њжидaху и5хъ корабли6 мн0зи, по џбщему и4хъ совёту днjй сeдмь,	slaying thus, in that day, above three hundred men, and esteeming this destruction of the wicked a season of joy.

тaмw сотвори1ша пи1ръ сп7сеніz: цaрь бо даровA благодyшнw коемyждо и4хъ вс‰ потрє1бнаz на пyть дaже до жили1ща и4хъ.	They themselves having held fast their God unto death, and having enjoyed a full deliverance, departed from the city garlanded with sweet-flowered wreaths of every kind. Uttering exclamations of joy, with songs of praise, and melodious hymns they thanked the God of their fathers, the eternal Saviour of Israel.

Дости1гше же ми1рнw въ подобaющихъ и3сповёданіихъ, тaкожде и3 тaмw ўстaвиша сі‰ дни6 прaздновати со весeліемъ во врeмz пришeлствіz и4хъ.	Having arrived at Ptolemais, called from the specialty of that district Rose-bearing, where the fleet, in accordance with the general wish, waited for them seven days,

И%хже и3 њсвzти1вше на столпЁ при мёстэ пи1ршества њбётомъ ўтверди1вше, tид0ша неврeдни, своб0дни, прерaдостни, землeю и3 м0ремъ и3 рэк0ю, њхранsеми цaрскимъ повелёніемъ, кjйждо во сво‰ си, и3 њдержaвше влaсть над8 враги6 б0лшую нeже прeжде, со слaвою и3 стрaхомъ, весьмA ни t когw2 лишaеми и3мёніz.	they partook of a banquet of deliverance, for the king generously granted them severally the means of securing a return home.

И# вс‰ сво‰ вси2 воспріsша t њписaніz, ћкw и3мyщіи что2 со стрaхомъ вeліимъ tдаsху и5мъ, вели6чіz превели1кому бGу сотв0ршу совершeннw во спcніе и3хъ.	They were accordingly brought back in peace, while they gave utterance to becoming thanks; and they determined to keep these days during their sojourn as days of joyfulness.
20	20
Блгcвенъ и3збaвитель ї}левъ во вBчнаz временA. Ґми1нь.	These they registered as sacred upon a pillar, when they had dedicated the place of their festivity to be one of prayer. They departed unharmed, free, abundant in joy, preserved by the king's command, by land, by sea, and by river, each to his own home.
