| In the third year of the reign of Joakim king of Juda, came Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it. | У третій рік царювання Іоакима, царя Юдейського, прийшов Навуходоносор, цар Вавилонський, до Єрусалима й обложив його. |

| And the Lord gave into his hand Joakim king of Juda, and part of the vessels of the house of God: and he brought them into the land of Sennaar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god. | І віддав Господь у руки його Іоакима, царя Юдейського, і частину сосудів дому Божого, і він відправив їх у землю Сеннаар, у дім бога свого, і вніс ці сосуди у скарбницю бога свого. |

| And the king told Asphanez his chief eunuch, to bring in some of the captive children of Israel, and of the seed of the kingdom, and of the princes; | І сказав цар Асфеназу, начальникові євнухів своїх, щоб він із синів Ізраїлевих, з роду царського і князівського, привів |

| young men in whom was no blemish, and beautiful in appearance, and skilled in all wisdom, and possessing knowledge, and acquainted with prudence, and who had ability to stand in the house before the king, and the king gave commandment to teach them the learning and language of the Chaldeans. | отроків, у яких немає ніякого тілесного недоліку, красивих на вигляд, і здібних для всякої науки, і таких, що розуміють науки, і здатних і гідних служити у чертогах царських, і щоб навчив їх книг і мови халдейської. |

| And the king appointed them a daily portion from the king's table, and from the wine which he drank; and gave orders to nourish them three years, and that afterwards they should stand before the king. | І призначив їм цар щоденну їжу з царського столу і вино, яке сам пив, і повелів виховувати їх три роки, після закінчення яких вони повинні були стати перед царем. |

| Now these were among them of the children of Juda, Daniel, and Ananias, and Azarias, and Misael. | Між ними були із синів Іудиних Даниїл, Ананія, Мисаїл та Азарія. |

| And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names: to Daniel, Baltasar; and to Ananias, Sedrach; and to Misael, Misach; and to Azarias, Abdenago. | І перейменував їх начальник євнухів — Даниїла Валтасаром, Ананію Седрахом, Мисаїла Мисахом і Азарію Авденаго. |

| And Daniel purposed in his heart, that he would not defile himself with the king's table, nor with the wine of his drink: and he intreated the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. | Даниїл поклав у серці своєму не осквернятися стравами зі столу царського і вином, яке п’є цар, і тому просив начальника євнухів про те, щоб не осквернятися йому. |

| Now God had brought Daniel into favour and compassion with the chief of the eunuchs. | Бог дарував Даниїлові милість і прихильність начальника євнухів; |

|
| And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your meat and your drink, lest he see your countenances gloomy in comparison of the young men your equals; so shall ye endanger my head to the king. | і начальник євнухів сказав Даниїлові: боюся я господаря мого, царя, який сам призначив вам їжу і питво; якщо він побачить обличчя ваші худішими, ніж у отроків, однолітків ваших, то ви зробите голову мою винною перед царем. |

| And Daniel said to Amelsad, whom the chief of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Ananias, Misael, and Azarias, | Тоді сказав Даниїл Амелсару, якого начальник євнухів приставив до Даниїла, Ананії, Мисаїла й Азарії: |

|
| Prove now thy servants ten days; and let them give us pulse, and let us eat, and let us drink water: | зроби дослід над рабами твоїми протягом десяти днів; нехай дають нам у їжу овочі і воду для пиття; |
|

|
| and let our countenances be seen by thee, and the countenances of the children that eat at the king's table; and deal with thy servants according as thou shalt see. | і потім нехай з’являться перед тобою обличчя наші й обличчя тих отроків, які годуються царською їжею, і потім зроби з рабами твоїми, як побачиш. |

| And he hearkened to them, and proved them ten days. | Він послухався їх у цьому і випробовував їх десять днів. |
|

|
| And at the end of the ten days their countenances appeared fairer and stouter in flesh than the children that fed at the king's table. | Після закінчення ж десяти днів обличчя їх виявилися красивішими, і тілом вони були повніші за усіх тих отроків, які харчувалися царськими стравами. |
|

|
| So Amelsad took away their supper and the wine of their drink, and gave them pulse. | Тоді Амелсар брав їхню страву і вино для пиття і давав їм овочі. |
|

|
| And as for these four children, God gave them understanding and prudence in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. | І дарував Бог чотирьом цим отрокам знання і розуміння всякої книги і мудрости, а Даниїлові ще дарував розуміти і всілякі видіння і сни. |

| And at the end of the days, after which the king had given orders to bring them in, then the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nabuchodonosor. | Після закінчення тих днів, коли цар наказав представити їх, начальник євнухів представив їх Навуходоносору. |
|

|
| And the king spoke with them; and there were not found out of them all any like Daniel, and Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias: and they stood before the king. | І цар говорив з ними, і з усіх отроків не знайшлося подібних до Даниїла, Ананії, Мисаїла й Азарії, і стали вони служити перед царем. |

| And in every matter of wisdom and knowledge wherein the king questioned them, he found them ten times wiser than all the enchanters and sorcerers that were in all his kingdom. | І в усякій справі мудрого розуміння, про що не запитував їх цар, він знаходив їх у десять разів вище за всіх тайновідців і волхвів, які були в усьому царстві його. |

| And Daniel continued till the first year of king Cyrus. | І був там Даниїл до першого року царя Кира. |

|
| In the second year of his reign Nabuchodonosor dreamed a dream, and his spirit was amazed, and his sleep departed from him. | У другий рік царювання Навуходоносора снилися Навуходоносору сни, і збурився дух його, і сон віддалився від нього. |
|

|
| And the king gave orders to call the enchanters, and the magicians, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dreams. And they came and stood before the king. | І звелів цар скликати тайновідців, і ворожбитів, і чаклунів, і халдеїв, щоб вони розповіли цареві сновидіння його. Вони прийшли, і стали перед царем. |

| And the king said to them, I have dreamed, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. | І сказав їм цар: сон снився мені, і тривожиться дух мій; бажаю знати цей сон. |
|

|
| And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in the Syrian language, saying, O king, live for ever: do thou tell the dream to thy servants, and we will declare the interpretation. | І сказали халдеї цареві по-арамейськи: царю! повіки живи! скажи сон рабам твоїм, і ми пояснимо значення його. |
|

| The king answered the Chaldeans, The thing has departed from me: if ye do not make known to me the dream and the interpretation, ye shall be destroyed, and your houses shall be spoiled. | Відповів цар і сказав халдеям: слово відступило від мене; якщо ви не скажете мені сновидіння і значення його, то на шматки будете порубані, і доми ваші обернуться на руїни. |

| But if ye make known to me the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and presents and much honour: only tell me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. | Якщо ж розповісте сон і значення його, то одержите від мене дари, нагороду і велику шану; отже, скажіть мені сон і значення його. |

| They answered the second time, and said, Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will declare the interpretation. | Вони вдруге відповіли і сказали: нехай скаже цар рабам своїм сновидіння, і ми пояснимо його значення. |
|

| And the king answered and said, I verily know that ye are trying to gain time, because ye see that the thing has gone from me. | Відповів цар і сказав: точно знаю, що ви хочете виграти час, тому що бачите, що слово відступило від мене. |
|

|
| If then ye do not tell me the dream, I know that ye have concerted to utter before me a false and corrupt tale, until the time shall have past: tell me my dream, and I shall know that ye will also declare to me the interpretation thereof. | Оскільки ви не оголошуєте мені сновидіння, то у вас один намір: ви збираєтеся сказати мені неправду й обман, поки мине час; отже, розкажіть мені сон, і тоді я дізнаюся, що ви можете пояснити мені і значення його. |

| The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is no man upon the earth, who shall be able to make known the king's matter: forasmuch as no great king or ruler asks such a question of an enchanter, magician, or Chaldean. | Халдеї відповіли царю і сказали: немає на землі людини, яка могла б відкрити цю справу царя, і тому жоден цар, великий і могутній, не вимагав подібного ні від якого тайновідця, ворожбита і халдея. |

| For the question which the king asks is difficult, and there is no one else who shall answer it before the king, but the gods, whose dwelling is not with any flesh. | Діло, якого цар вимагає, таке складне, що ніхто інший не може відкрити його цареві, крім богів, які не живуть з плоттю. |

| Then the king in rage and anger commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon. | Розлютився цар і сильно розгнівався на це, і наказав знищити всіх мудреців вавилонських. |

|
| So the decree went forth, and they began to slay the wise men; and they sought Daniel and his fellows to slay them. | Коли вийшло це повеління, щоб убивати мудреців, шукали Даниїла і товаришів його, щоб умертвити їх. |

|
| Then Daniel answered with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the royal guard, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon; saying, | Тоді Даниїл звернувся з порадою і мудрістю до Ариоха, начальника царських охоронців, який вийшов убивати мудреців вавилонських; |

| Chief magistrate of the king, wherefore has the peremptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniel. | і запитав Ариоха, сильного при царі: «чому таке грізне повеління від царя?» Тоді Ариох розповів усю справу Даниїлові. |

|
| And Daniel intreated the king to give him time, and that he might thus declare to the king the interpretation of it. | І Даниїл увійшов, і ублагав царя дати йому час, і він представить цареві тлумачення сну. |
|

|
| So Daniel went into his house, and made known the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias, his friends. | Даниїл прийшов у дім свій, і розповів справу Ананії, Мисаїлу й Азарії, товаришам своїм, |
|

|
| And they sought mercies from the God of heaven concerning this mystery; that Daniel and his friends might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. | щоб вони просили милости у Бога небесного про цю таємницю, щоб Даниїл і товариші його не загинули з іншими мудрецями вавилонськими. |
|

|
| Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night: and Daniel blessed the God of heaven, and said, | І тоді відкрита була таємниця Даниїлові у нічному видінні, і Даниїл благословив Бога небесного. |
|

20
|
| May the name of God be blessed from everlasting and to everlasting: for wisdom and understanding are his. | І сказав Даниїл: нехай буде благословенне ім’я Господа від віку і до віку! бо у Нього мудрість і сила; |
|

|

|
| And he changes times and seasons: he appoints kings, and removes them, giving wisdom to the wise, and prudence to them that have understanding: | він змінює часи і літа, скидає царів і поставляє царів; дає мудрість мудрим і розуміння розумним; |
|

|
| he reveals deep and secret matters; knowing what is in darkness, and the light is with him. | Він відкриває глибоке і таємне, знає, що у мороці, і світло живе з Ним. |
|

|
| I give thanks to thee, and praise thee, O God of my fathers, for thou hast given me wisdom and power, and hast made known to me the things which we asked of thee; and thou hast made known to me the king's vision. | Славлю і величаю Тебе, Боже батьків моїх, що Ти дарував мені мудрість і силу і відкрив мені те, про що ми благали Тебе; бо Ти відкрив нам справу царя. |

| And Daniel came to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him; Destroy not the wise men of Babylon, but bring me in before the king, and I will declare the interpretation to the king. | Після цього Даниїл увійшов до Ариоха, якому цар повелів умертвити мудреців вавилонських, прийшов і сказав йому: не убивай мудреців вавилонських; введи мене до царя, і я відкрию значення сну. |

| Then Arioch in haste brought in Daniel before the king, and said to him, I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Judea, who will declare the interpretation to the king. | Тоді Ариох негайно привів Даниїла до царя і сказав йому: я знайшов з полонених синів Юдеї людину, яка може відкрити цареві значення сну. |

| And the king answered and said to Daniel, whose name was Baltasar, Canst thou declare to me the dream which I saw, and the interpretation thereof? | Цар сказав Даниїлові, який названий був Валтасаром: чи можеш ти сказати мені сон, який я бачив, і значення його? |

|
| And Daniel answered before the king, and said, The mystery which the king asks the explanation of is not in the power of the wise men, magicians, enchanters, or soothsayers to declare to the king. | Даниїл відповів цареві і сказав: таємниці, про яку цар запитує, не можуть відкрити цареві ні мудреці, ні чародії, ні тайновідці, ні ворожбити. |

| But there is a God in heaven revealing mysteries, and he has made known to king Nabuchodonosor what things must come to pass in the last days. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are as follows, | Але є на небесах Бог, Який відкриває таємниці; і Він відкрив цареві Навуходоносору, що буде в останні дні. Сон твій і видіння голови твоєї на ложі твоєму були такі: |

| O king: thy thoughts upon thy bed arose as to what must come to pass hereafter: and he that reveals mysteries has made known to thee what must come to pass. | ти, царю, на ложі твоєму думав про те, що буде після цього? і Той, Хто відкриває таємниці, показав тобі те, що буде. |

| Moreover, this mystery has not been revealed to me by reason of wisdom which is in me beyond all others living, but for the sake of making known the interpretation to the king, that thou mightest know the thoughts of thine heart. | А мені таємниця ця відкрита не тому, що я мудріший за всіх, хто живе, але для того, щоб відкрито було цареві розуміння і щоб ти узнав думки серця твого. |

| Thou, O king, sawest, and behold an image: that image was great, and the appearance of it excellent, standing before thy face; and the form of it was terrible. | Тобі, царю, було таке видіння: ось, якийсь великий ідол; величезний був цей ідол, у надзвичайному блиску стояв він перед тобою, і страшний був вигляд його. |

| It was an image, the head of which was of fine gold, its hands and breast and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of brass, | У цього ідола голова була з чистого золота, груди його і руки його — зі срібла, черево його і стегна його мідні, |
|

|
| its legs of iron, its feet, part of iron and part of earthenware. | гомілки його залізні, ноги його частково залізні, частково глиняні. |
|

|
| Thou sawest until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it smote the image upon its feet of iron and earthenware, and utterly reduced them to powder. | Ти бачив його, доки камінь не відірвався від гори без допомоги рук, ударив у ідола, у залізні і глиняні ноги його, і розбив їх. |

| Then once for all the earthenware, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold, were ground to powder, and became as chaff from the summer threshingfloor; and the violence of the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them: and the stone which had smitten the image became a great mountain, and filled all the earth. | Тоді все разом роздробилося: залізо, глина, мідь, срібло і золото зробилися як порох на літніх токах, і вітер розніс їх, і сліду не залишилося від них; а камінь, який розбив ідола, зробився великою горою і наповнив усю землю. |

| This is the dream; and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king. | Ось сон! Скажемо перед царем і значення його. |

| Thou, O king, art a king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given a powerful and strong and honourable kingdom, | Ти, царю, цар царів, якому Бог небесний дарував царство, владу, силу і славу, |
|

|
| in every place where the children of men dwell: and he has given into thine hand the wild beasts of the field, and the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, and he has made thee lord of all. | і всіх синів людських, де б вони не жили, звірів земних і птахів небесних Він віддав до твоїх рук і поставив тебе владикою над усіма ними. Ти — це золота голова! |

| Thou art the head of gold. And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee, and a third kingdom which is the brass, which shall have dominion over all the earth; | Після тебе постане інше царство, нижче за твоє, і ще третє царство, мідне, яке буде володарювати над всією землею. |
|

|
| and a fourth kingdom, which shall be strong as iron: as iron beats to powder and subdues all things, so shall it beat to powder and subdue. | А четверте царство буде міцне, як залізо; бо як залізо розбиває і роздроблює все, так і воно, подібно до нищівного заліза, буде роздроблювати і розтрощувати. |

| And whereas thou sawest the feet and the toes, part of earthenware and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet there shall be in it of the strength of iron, as thou sawest the iron mixed with earthenware. | А що ти бачив ноги і пальці на ногах частково з глини гончарної, а частково із заліза, то буде царство розділене, і в ньому залишиться трохи міцности заліза, тому що ти бачив залізо, змішане з гончарною глиною. |

| And whereas the toes of the feet were part of iron and part of earthenware, part of the kingdom shall be strong, and part of it shall be broken. | І як пальці ніг були частково із заліза, а частково з глини, так і царство буде частково міцне, частково крихке. |
|

|
| Whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with earthenware, they shall be mingled with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave together, as the iron does not mix itself with earthenware. | А що ти бачив залізо, змішане з глиною гончарною, це означає, що вони змішаються через сíм’я людське, але не зіллються одне з одним, як залізо не змішується з глиною. |

| And in the days of those kings the God of heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed: and his kingdom shall not be left to another people, but it shall beat to pieces and grind to powder all other kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. | І в дні тих царств Бог небесний воздвигне царство, яке повіки не зруйнується, і царство це не буде передано іншому народові; воно скрушить і зруйнує всі царства, а саме буде стояти вічно, |

| Whereas thou sawest that a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it beat to pieces the earthenware, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold; the great God has made known to the king what must happen hereafter: and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof sure. | оскільки ти бачив, що камінь відірваний був від гори не руками і роздробив залізо, мідь, глину, срібло і золото. Великий Бог дав знати царю, що буде після цього. І вірний цей сон, і точне тлумачення його! |

| Then king Nabuchodonosor fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and gave orders to offer to him gifts and incense. | Тоді цар Навуходоносор упав на лице своє і поклонився Даниїлові, і звелів принести йому дари і запашні куріння. |

| And the king answered and said to Daniel, Of a truth your God is a God of gods, and Lord of kings, who reveals mysteries; for thou hast been able to reveal this mystery. | І сказав цар Даниїлові: істинно Бог ваш є Бог богів і Владика царів, Який відкриває таємниці, коли ти міг відкрити цю таємницю! |

| And the king promoted Daniel, and gave him great and abundant gifts, and set him over the whole province of Babylon, and made him chief satrap over all the wise men of Babylon. | Тоді підніс цар Даниїла і дав йому багато великих дарунків, і поставив його над усією областю Вавилонською і головним начальником над усіма мудрецями вавилонськими. |

| And Daniel asked of the king, and he appointed Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, over the affairs of the province of Babylon: but Daniel was in the king's palace. | Але Даниїл просив царя, і він поставив Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго над ділами країни Вавилонської, а Даниїл залишився при дворі царя. |

|
| In his eighteenth year Nabuchodonosor the king made a golden image, its height was sixty cubits, its breadth six cubits: and he set it up in the plain of Deira, in the province of Babylon. | Цар Навуходоносор зробив золотого ідола, висотою в шістдесят ліктів, шириною у шість ліктів, поставив його на полі Деїрі, в області Вавилонській. |

| And he sent forth to gather the governors, and the captains, and the heads of provinces, chiefs, and princes, and those who were in authority, and all the rulers of districts, to come to the dedication of the image. | І послав цар Навуходоносор зібрати сатрапів, намісників, воєвод, верховних суддів, казнохранителів, законознавців, наглядачів суду і всіх обласних правителів, щоб вони прийшли на урочисте відкриття ідола, якого поставив цар Навуходоносор. |

| So the heads of provinces, the governors, the captains, the chiefs, the great princes, those who were in authority, and all the rulers of districts, were gathered to the dedication of the image which king Nabuchodonosor had set up; and they stood before the image. | І зібралися сатрапи, намісники, воєначальники, верховні судді, казнохранителі, законознавці, наглядачі суду і всі обласні правителі на відкриття ідола, якого Навуходоносор цар поставив, і стали перед ідолом, якого спорудив Навуходоносор. |

| Then a herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, ye peoples, tribes, and languages, | Тоді глашатай голосно викликнув: оголошується вам, народи, племена і мови: |

| at what hour ye shall hear the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and psaltery, and every kind of music, ye shall fall down and worship the golden image which king Nabuchodonosor has set up. | у той час, як почуєте звук труби, сопілки, цитри, цівниці, гусел і симфонії і всяких музичних інструментів, упадіть і поклоніться золотому ідолу, якого поставив цар Навуходоносор. |

| And whosoever shall not fall down and worship, in the same hour he shall be cast into the burning fiery furnace. | А хто не впаде і не поклониться, негайно буде кинутий у піч, розжарену вогнем. |
|

| And it came to pass when the nations heard the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and psaltery, and all kinds of music, all the nations, tribes, and languages, fell down and worshipped the golden image which king Nabuchodonosor had set up. | Тому, коли всі народи почули звук труби, сопілки, цитри, цівниці, гусел і всякого роду музичних інструментів, то упали всі народи, племена і мови, і поклонилися золотому ідолу, якого поставив Навуходоносор цар. |

| Then came near certain Chaldeans, and accused the Jews to the king, saying, | У цей самий час приступили деякі з халдеїв і донесли на юдеїв. |
|

|
| O king, live for ever. | Вони сказали цареві Навуходоносору: царю, повіки живи! |
|

|
| Thou, O king, hast made a decree, that every man who shall hear the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, sackbut, and psaltery, and all kinds of music, | Ти, царю, дав повеління, щоб кожна людина, яка почує звук труби, сопілки, цитри, цівниці, гусел і симфонії і всякого роду музичних інструментів, упала і поклонилася золотому ідолу; |

| and shall not fall down and worship the golden image, shall be cast into the burning fiery furnace. | а хто не впаде і не поклониться, той повинен бути кинутий у піч, розжарену вогнем. |
|

|
| There are certain Jews whom thou hast appointed over the affairs of the province of Babylon, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, who have not obeyed thy decree, O king: they serve not thy gods, and worship not the golden image which thou hast set up. | Є мужі юдейські, яких ти поставив над ділами країни Вавилонської: Седрах, Мисах і Авденаго; ці мужі не підкорюються повелінню твоєму, царю, богам твоїм не служать і золотому ідолу, якого ти поставив, не поклоняються. |

| Then Nabuchodonosor in wrath and anger commanded to bring Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago: and they were brought before the king. | Тоді Навуходоносор у гніві й люті повелів привести Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго; і приведені були ці мужі до царя. |

| And Nabuchodonosor answered and said to them, Is it true, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, that ye serve not my gods, and worship not the golden image which I have set up? | Навуходоносор сказав їм: чи за умислом, ви, Седрах, Мисах і Авденаго, богам моїм не служите, і золотому ідолу, якого я поставив, не поклоняєтеся? |

| Now then if ye be ready, whensoever ye shall hear the sound of the trumpet, and pipe, and harp, and sackbut, and psaltery, and harmony, and every kind of music, to fall down and worship the golden image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, in the same hour ye shall be cast into the burning fiery furnace; and who is the God that shall deliver you out of my hand? | Віднині, якщо ви готові, як тільки почуєте звук труби, сопілки, цитри, цівниці, гусел, симфонії і всякого роду музичних інструментів, упадіть і поклоніться ідолу, якого я зробив; якщо ж не поклонитеся, то у ту ж годину будете кинуті у піч, розжарену вогнем, і тоді який Бог визволить вас від руки моєї? |

| Then answered Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, and said to king Nabuchodonosor, We have no need to answer thee concerning this matter. | І відповіли Седрах, Мисах і Авденаго, і сказали цареві Навуходоносору: немає потреби нам відповідати тобі на це. |

| For our God whom we serve is in the heavens, able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will rescue us from thy hands, O king. | Бог наш, Якому ми служимо, сильний спасти нас від печі, розжареної вогнем, і від руки твоєї, царю, визволити. |

| But if not, be it known to thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the image which thou hast set up. | Якщо ж і не буде того, то нехай буде відомо тобі, царю, що ми богам твоїм служити не будемо і золотому ідолу, якого ти поставив, не поклонимося. |

| Then Nabuchodonosor was filled with wrath, and the form of his countenance was changed toward Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago: and he gave orders to heat the furnace seven times more than usual, until it should burn to the uttermost. | Тоді Навуходоносор сповнився люті, і вигляд лиця його змінився на Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго, і він повелів розпалити піч у сім разів сильніше, ніж як звичайно розпалювали її, |

| And he commanded mighty men to bind Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. | і найсильнішим мужам з війська свого наказав зв’язати Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго і кинути їх у піч, розжарену вогнем. |

| Then those men were bound with their coats, and caps, and hose, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace, | Тоді мужі ці зв’язані були у спідньому і верхньому вбранні своєму, з пов’язками на головах і в іншому одязі своєму, і кинуті у піч, розжарену вогнем. |

| forasmuch as the king's word prevailed; and the furnace was made exceeding hot. | І оскільки повеління царя було суворе, і піч розжарена була надзвичайно, то полум’я вогню убило тих людей, які кидали Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго. |

| Then these three men, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, fell bound into the midst of the burning furnace, | А ці три мужі, Седрах, Мисах і Авденаго, упали в розпечену вогнем піч зв’язані. [ |

| and walked in the midst of the flame, singing praise to God, and blessing the Lord. | *І ходили посеред полум’я, оспівуючи Бога і благословляючи Господа. |

| Then Azarias stood up, and prayed on this manner; and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said, | І, вставши, Азарія молився і, відкривши вуста свої посеред вогню, виголосив: |

| Blessed art thou, O Lord God of our fathers: thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore: | «Благословенний Ти, Господи Боже отців наших, хвальне і прославлене ім’я Твоє повіки. |

| for thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us: yea, true are all thy works, thy ways are right, and all thy judgments truth. | Бо праведний Ти в усьому, що вчинив з нами, і всі діла Твої істинні й путі Твої праві, і всі суди Твої істинні. |

| In all the things that thou hast brought upon us, and upon the holy city of our fathers, even Jerusalem, thou hast executed true judgment: for according to truth and judgment didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins. | Ти звершив істинні суди в усьому, що навів на нас і на святе місто отців наших Єрусалим, тому що за істиною і за судом навів Ти все це на нас за гріхи наші. |

| For we have sinned and committed iniquity, departing from thee. In all things have we trespassed, and not obeyed thy commandments, | Бо згрішили ми, і вчинили беззаконно, відступивши від Тебе, і в усьому згрішили. |

| Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us, and every thing that thou hast done to us, thou hast done in true judgment. | І все, що Ти навів на нас, і все, що Ти вчинив з нами, вчинив за істинним судом. |

| And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies, most hateful forsakers of God, and to an unjust king, and the most wicked in all the world. | І віддав нас до рук ворогів беззаконних, найненависніших відступників, і царю неправосудному і найлютішому на всій землі. |

| And now we cannot open our mouths, we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants, and to them that worship thee. | І нині ми не можемо відкрити вуст наших; ми стали соромом і ганьбою для рабів Твоїх і тих, що шанують Тебе. |

| For we, O Lord, are become less than any nation, and be kept under this day in all the world because of our sins. | Ми принижені, Господи, більше за всі народи, і принижені нині на всій землі за гріхи наші, |

| Neither is there at this time prince, or prophet, or leader, or burnt offering, or sacrifice, or oblation, or incense, or place to sacrifice before thee, and to find mercy. | і немає у нас у даний час ні князя, ні пророка, ні вождя, ні всепалення, ні жертви, ні приношення, ні фіміаму, ні місця, щоб нам принести жертву Тобі і знайти милість Твою. |

| Nevertheless in a contrite heart and an humble spirit let us be accepted. Like as in the burnt offerings of rams and bullocks, and like as in ten thousands of fat lambs: | Але зі скрушеним серцем і смиренним духом нехай будемо прийняті. |

| so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, and grant that we may wholly go after thee: for they shall not be confounded that put their trust in thee. | Як при всепаленні баранів і тельців і як при тисячах повнотілих агнців, так нехай буде жертва наша перед Тобою нині благоугодною Тобі; бо немає сорому тим, хто уповає на Тебе. |

| And now we follow thee with all our heart, we fear thee, and seek thy face. Put us not to shame: | І нині ми йдемо за Тобою всім серцем і боїмося Тебе і шукаємо лиця Твого. |

| but deal with us after thy lovingkindness, and according to the multitude of thy mercies. | Не посором нас, але сотвори з нами за поблажливістю Твоєю і за безліччю милости Твоєї |

| Deliver us also according to thy marvellous works, and give glory to thy name, O Lord: | і визволи нас силою чудес Твоїх, і дай славу імені Твоєму, Господи, |

| and let all them that do thy servants hurt be ashamed; and let them be confounded in all their power and might, and let their strength be broken; | і нехай посоромляться всі, що роблять рабам Твоїм зло, і нехай посоромляться з усією могутністю, і сила їх нехай скрушиться, |

| and let them know that thou art Lord, the only God, and glorious over the whole world. | і нехай пізнають, що Ти Господь Бог єдиний і славний по всій вселенній». |

| And the king's servants, that put them in, ceased not to make the oven hot with rosin, pitch, tow, and small wood; | А тим часом слуги царя, які вкинули їх, не переставали розпалювати піч нафтою, смолою, паклею і хмизом, |

| so that the flame streamed forth above the furnace forty and nine cubits. | і піднімалося полум’я над піччю на сорок дев’ять ліктів |

| And it passed through, and burned those Chaldeans it found about the furnace. | і виривалося, і спалювало тих з халдеїв, яких досягало біля печі. |

| But the angel of the Lord came down into the oven together with Azarias and his fellows, and smote the flame of the fire out of the oven; | Але ангел Господній зійшов у піч разом з Азарією і тими, що були з ним, |

| Then Nabuchodonosor drew near to the door of the burning fiery furnace, and said, Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, ye servants of the most high God, proceed forth, and come hither. So Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, came forth out of the midst of the fire. | Тоді підійшов Навуходоносор до челюстів печі, розжареної вогнем, і сказав: Седраху, Мисаху й Авденаго, раби Бога Всевишнього! вийдіть і підійдіть! | Then were assembled the satraps, and captains, and heads of provinces, and the royal princes; and they saw the men, and perceived that the fire had not had power against their bodies, and the hair of their head was not burnt, and their coats were not scorched, nor was the smell of fire upon them. | І, зібравшись, сатрапи, намісники, воєначальники і радники царя побачили, що над тілами мужів цих вогонь не мав сили, і волосся на голові не обпалене, й одяг їхній не змінився, і навіть запаху вогню не було від них. |

| And king Nabuchodonosor answered and said, Blessed be the God of Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, who has sent his angel, and delivered his servants, because they trusted in him; and they have changed the king's word, and delivered their bodies to be burnt, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God. | Тоді Навуходоносор сказав: благословенний Бог Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго, Який послав ангела Свого і визволив рабів Своїх, які уповали на Нього і не послухалися царського повеління, і віддали тіла свої [вогню], щоб не служити і не поклонятися іншому богу, крім Бога свого! |

| Wherefore I publish a decree: Every people, tribe, or language, that shall speak reproachfully against the God of Sedrach, Misach, and Abdenago, shall be destroyed, and their houses shall be plundered: because there is no other God who shall be able to deliver thus. | І від мене дається повеління, щоб з усякого народу, племені і мови, хто вимовить хулу на Бога Седраха, Мисаха й Авденаго, був порубаний на шматки, і дім його перетворений на руїни, бо немає іншого бога, який міг би так спасати. |

| So the enchanters, magicians, soothsayers, and Chaldeans came in: and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation thereof; | Видіння ж голови моєї на ложі моєму були такі: я бачив, ось, серед землі дерево дуже високе. |

| until Daniel came, whose name is Baltasar, according to the name of my God, who has within him the Holy Spirit of God; to whom I said, | Велике було це дерево і міцне, і висота його сягала неба, і воно видиме було до країв усієї землі. |

| O Baltasar, chief of the enchanters, of whom I know that the Holy Spirit of God is in thee, and no mystery is too hard for thee, hear the vision of my dream which I had, and tell me the interpretation of it. | Листя його прекрасне, і плодів на ньому безліч, і їжа на ньому для всіх; під ним знаходили тінь польові звірі, і в гілках його гніздилися птахи небесні, і від нього годувалася усяка плоть. |

| At the same time my reason returned to me, and I came to the honour of my kingdom; and my natural form returned to me, and my princes, and my nobles, sought me, and I was established in my kingdom, and more abundant majesty was added to me. | |

| Now therefore I Nabuchodonosor praise and greatly exalt and glorify the King of heaven; for all his works are true, and his paths are judgment: and all that walk in pride he is able to abase. | |

| Then the king's countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one another. | Тоді цар змінився у лиці своєму; думки його збентежили його, зв’язки стегон його ослабли, і коліна його стали битися одне об одне. |

| And the king cried aloud to bring in the magicians, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; and he said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation, shall be clothed with scarlet, and there shall be a golden chain upon his neck, and he shall be the third ruler in my kingdom. | Сильно закричав цар, щоб привели чаклунів, халдеїв і ворожбитів. Цар почав говорити, і сказав мудрецям вавилонським: хто прочитає це написане і пояснить мені значення його, той буде вбраний у багряницю, і золотий ланцюг буде на шиї у нього, і третім володарем буде у царстві. |

| Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known the interpretation to the king. | І ввійшли всі мудреці царя, але не могли прочитати написаного і пояснити цареві значення його. |

| And king Baltasar was troubled, and his countenance changed upon him, and his nobles were troubled with him. | Цар Валтасар надзвичайно стривожився, і вигляд лиця його змінився на ньому, і вельможі його збентежилися. |

| For there is an excellent spirit in him, and sense and understanding are in him, interpreting dreams as he does, and answering hard questions, and solving difficulties: it is Daniel, and the king gave him the name of Baltasar: now then let him be called, and he shall tell thee the interpretation of the writing. | тому що у ньому, у Даниїлі, якого цар перейменував Валтасаром, виявилися високий дух, відання і розум, здатний пояснювати сни, тлумачити загадкове і розв’язувати вузли. Отже, нехай прикличуть Даниїла, і він пояснить значення. |

| Then Daniel was brought in before the king: and the king said to Daniel, Art thou Daniel, of the children of the captivity of Judea, which the king my father brought? | Тоді введений був Даниїл до царя, і цар почав розмову і сказав Даниїлові: чи ти Даниїл, один з полонених синів юдейських, яких батько мій, цар, привів з Юдеї? |

| And now the wise men, magicians, and soothsayers have come in before me, to read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation: but they could not tell it me. | Ось, приведені були до мене мудреці й чаклуни, щоб прочитати це написане і пояснити мені значення його; але вони не могли пояснити мені цього. |

| And I have heard concerning thee, that thou art able to make interpretations: now then if thou shalt be able to read the writing, and to make known to me the interpretation of it, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and there shall be a golden chain upon thy neck, and thou shalt be third ruler in my kingdom. | А про тебе я чув, що ти можеш пояснювати значення і розв’язувати вузли; отже, якщо можеш прочитати це написане і пояснити мені значення його, то вбраний будеш у багряницю, і золотий ланцюг буде на шиї твоїй, і третім володарем будеш у царстві. |

| And Daniel said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give the present of thine house to another; but I will read the writing, and will make known to thee the interpretation of it. | Тоді відповів Даниїл, і сказав цареві: дари твої нехай залишаться у тебе, і почесті віддай іншому; а написане я прочитаю цареві і значення поясню йому. |

| O king, the most high God gave to thy father Nabuchodonosor a kingdom, and majesty, and honour, and glory: | Царю! Всевишній Бог дарував батькові твоєму Навуходоносору царство, велич, честь і славу. |

| and by reason of the majesty which he gave to him, all nations, tribes and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he smote; and whom he would he exalted; and whom he would he abased. | Перед величчю, яку Він дав йому, всі народи, племена і мови тремтіли і страшилися його: кого хотів, він убивав, і кого хотів, залишав у живих; кого хотів, підносив, і кого хотів, принижував. |

| And he was driven forth from men; and his heart was given him after the nature of wild beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; and they fed him with grass as an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the most high God is Lord of the kingdom of men, and will give it to whomsoever he shall please. | і відлучений був від синів людських, і серце його уподібнилося до звіриного, і жив він з дикими ослами; годували його травою, як вола, і тіло його зрошувалося небесною росою, доки він пізнав, що над царством людським володарює Всевишній Бог і поставляє над ним, кого хоче. |

| And thou accordingly, his son, O Baltasar, hast not humbled thine heart before God: knowest thou not all this? | І ти, син його Валтасар, не смирив серця твого, хоч знав усе це, |

| And thou hast been exalted against the Lord God of heaven; and they have brought before thee the vessels of his house, and thou, and thy nobles, and thy mistresses, and thy concubines, have drunk wine out of them; and thou hast praised the gods of gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and wood, and stone, which see not, and which hear not, and know not: and the God in whose hand are thy breath and all thy ways hast thou not glorified. | але піднісся проти Господа небес, і сосуди дому Його принесли до тебе, і ти і вельможі твої, дружини твої і наложниці твої пили з них вино, і ти славив богів срібних і золотих, мідних, залізних, дерев’яних і кам’яних, які не бачать, не чують, не розуміють; а Бога, у руці Якого дихання твоє і в Якого всі путі твої, ти не прославив. |

| And it pleased Darius, and he set over the kingdom a hundred and twenty satraps, to be in all his kingdom; | а над ними трьох князів, — з яких один був Даниїл, — щоб сатрапи давали їм звіт і щоб для царя не було ніякого обтяження. |

|
| and over them three governors, of whom one was Daniel; for the satraps to give account to them, that the king should not be troubled. | Даниїл перевершував інших князів і сатрапів, тому що у ньому був високий дух, і цар подумував уже поставити його над усім царством. |

| And Daniel was over them, for there was an excellent spirit in him; and the king set him over all his kingdom. | Тоді князі і сатрапи почали шукати приводу до звинувачення Даниїла щодо управління царством; але ніякого приводу і провин не могли знайти, тому що він був вірний, і ніякого прогрішення або провини не виявлялося у ньому. |

| Then the governors and satraps stood by the king, and said to him, King Darius, live for ever. | Усі князі царства, намісники, сатрапи, радники і воєначальники погодилися між собою, щоб зроблена була царська постанова і видане повеління, щоб, хто протягом тридцяти днів буде просити якого-небудь бога або людину, крім тебе, царю, того кинути у лев’ячий рів. |

| All who preside over thy kingdom, captains and satraps, chiefs and local governors, have taken counsel together, to establish by a royal statute and to confirm a decree, that whosoever shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions. | Отже, затвердь, царю, цю постанову і підпиши указ, щоб він був незмінний, як закон мідійський і перський, і щоб він не був порушений. |

| Now then, O king, establish the decree, and publish a writ, that the decree of the Persians and Medes be not changed. | Цар Дарій підписав указ і це повеління. |

| Then king Darius commanded the decree to be written. | Даниїл же, дізнавшись, що підписано такий указ, пішов у дім свій; вікна ж у світлиці його були відчинені навпроти Єрусалима, і він тричі на день схиляв коліна, і молився своєму Богу, і славословив Його, як це робив він і раніше того. |

| And when Daniel knew that the decree was ordered, he went into his house; and his windows were opened in his chambers toward Jerusalem, and three times in the day he knelt upon his knees, and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he used to do before. | Тоді ці люди підглянули і знайшли Даниїла, що він молиться і просить милости перед Богом своїм, |

| And they came and said to the king, O king, hast thou not made a decree, that whatsoever man shall ask a petition of any god or man for thirty days, but of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? And the king said, The word is true, and the decree of the Medes and Persians shall not pass. | Тоді відповіли, вони і сказали цареві, що Даниїл, який з полонених синів Юдеї, не звертає уваги ні на тебе, царю, ні на указ, тобою підписаний, але тричі у день молиться своїми молитвами. |

| Then they answered and said before the king, Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judea, has not submitted to thy decree; and three times in the day he makes his requests of his God. | Цар, почувши це, сильно засмутився і поклав у серці своєму врятувати Даниїла, і навіть до заходу сонця посилено намагався визволити його. |

| Then the king commanded, and they brought Daniel, and cast him into the den of lions. | And they brought a stone, and put it on the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his ring, and with the ring of his nobles; that the case might not be altered with regard to Daniel. | Потім цар пішов у свій палац, ліг спати без вечері, і навіть не велів вносити до нього їжі, і сон біг від нього. |

| And the king departed to his house, and lay down fasting, and they brought him no food; and his sleep departed from him. But God shut the mouths of the lions, and they did not molest Daniel. | Вранці ж цар устав на світанку і поспішно пішов до рову лев’ячого, |

| Then the king arose very early in the morning, and came in haste to the den of lions. | і, підійшовши до рову, жалібним голосом гукнув Даниїла, і сказав цар Даниїлові: Даниїле, рабе Бога живого! Бог твій, Якому ти незмінно служиш, чи міг спасти тебе від левів? |

| And when he drew near to the den, he cried with a loud voice, Daniel, servant of the living God, has thy God, whom thou servest continually, been able to deliver thee from the lion's mouth? | Тоді Даниїл сказав цареві: царю! повіки живи! |

| And Daniel said to the king, O king, live for ever. | Бог мій послав ангела Свого і загородив пащі левів, і вони не зашкодили мені, тому що я виявився перед Ним чистим, та й перед тобою, царю, я не зробив злочину. |

| My God has sent his angel, and stopped the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me: for uprightness was found in me before him; and moreover before thee, O king, I have committed no trespass. | Тоді цар надзвичайно зрадів за нього і повелів підняти Даниїла з рову; і піднятий був Даниїл з рову, і ніякого ушкодження не виявилося на ньому, тому що він вірував у Бога свого. |

| Then the king was very glad for him, and he commanded to bring Daniel out of the den. So Daniel was brought out of the den, and there was found no hurt upon him, because he believed in his God. | І наказав цар, і приведені були ті люди, які звинувачували Даниїла, і кинуті у лев’ячий рів, як вони самі, так і діти їхні і дружини їхні; і вони не досягли дна рову, як леви оволоділи ними і розтрощили всі кістки їхні. |

| This decree has been set forth by me in every dominion of my kingdom, that men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living and eternal God, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed, and his dominion is for ever. | Він визволяє і спасає, і звершує чудеса і знамення на небі й на землі; Він визволив Даниїла від сили левів». |

| After this one I looked, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and exceedingly strong, and its teeth were of iron; devouring and crushing to atoms, and it trampled the remainder with its feet: and it was altogether different from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. | Після цього бачив я в нічних видіннях, і ось звір четвертий, страшний і жахливий і дуже сильний; у нього великі залізні зуби; він пожирає і розтрощує, залишки ж топче ногами; він відмінний був від усіх інших звірів, і десять рогів було у нього. |

| I beheld in the night vision, and, lo, one coming with the clouds of heaven as the Son of man, and he came on to the Ancient of days, and was brought near to him. | Бачив я у нічних видіннях, ось із хмарами небесними йшов ніби Син людський, дійшов до Ветхого днями і підведений був до Нього. |

| And to him was given the dominion, and the honour, and the kingdom; and all nations, tribes, and languages, shall serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed. | І Йому дана влада, слава і царство, щоб усі народи, племена і мови служили Йому; володарювання Його — володарювання вічне, яке не мине, і царство Його не зруйнується. |

| Then I enquired carefully concerning the fourth beast; for it differed from every other beast, exceeding dreadful: its teeth were of iron, and its claws of brass, devouring, and utterly breaking to pieces, and it trampled the remainder with its feet: | Тоді побажав я точного пояснення про четвертого звіра, який був відмінний від усіх і дуже страшний, із зубами залізними і кігтями мідними, пожирав і розтрощував, а залишки топтав ногами, |

| And he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom on the earth, which shall excel all other kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and trample and destroy it. | Про це він сказав: звір четвертий — четверте царство буде на землі, відмінне від усіх царств, яке буде пожирати всю землю, топтати і скрушати її. |

| And his ten horns are ten kings that shall arise: and after them shall arise another, who shall exceed all the former ones in wickedness, and he shall subdue three kings. | А десять рогів означають, що з цього царства постануть десять царів, і після них постане інший, відмінний від попередніх, і принизить трьох царів, |

|
| And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change times and law: and power shall be given into his hand for a time and times and half a time. | і проти Всевишнього буде говорити слова і пригнічувати святих Всевишнього; навіть мріятиме відмінити у них святкові часи і закон, і вони віддані будуть у руку його до часу і часів і напівчасу. |

| And the kingdom and the power and the greatness of the kings that are under the whole heaven were given to the saints of the Most High; and his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all powers shall serve and obey him. | Царство ж і влада і велич царствена в усій піднебесній дані будуть народу святих Всевишнього, Якого царство — царство вічне, і всі володарі будуть служити і коритися Йому. |

| And I saw him coming up close to the ram, and he was furiously enraged against him, and he smote the ram, and broke both his horns: and there was no strength in the ram to stand before him, but he cast him on the ground, and trampled on him; and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand. | І я бачив, як він, наблизившись до барана, розлютився на нього й уразив барана, і зломив у нього обидва роги; і не вистачило сили у барана устояти проти нього, і він повалив його на землю і розтоптав його, і не було нікого, хто міг би спасти барана від нього. |

| And the he-goat grew exceedingly great: and when he was strong, his great horn was broken; and four other horns rose up in its place toward the four winds of heaven. | Тоді козел надзвичайно звеличився; але коли він набрав сили, то зломився великий ріг, і на місце його вийшло чотири, повернені на чотири вітри небесних. |

| And out of one of them came forth one strong horn, and it grew very great toward the south, and toward the host: | Від одного з них вийшов невеликий ріг, який надзвичайно розрісся до півдня і до сходу і до прекрасної країни, |

| and it magnified itself to the host of heaven; and there fell to the earth some of the host of heaven and of the stars, and they trampled on them. | і піднісся до воїнства небесного, і скинув на землю частину цього воїнства і зірок, і потоптав їх, |

| And this shall be until the chief captain shall have delivered the captivity: and by reason of him the sacrifice was disturbed, and he prospered; and the holy place shall be made desolate. | і навіть піднісся на Вождя воїнства цього, і віднята була у Нього щоденна жертва, і зганьблене було місце святині Його. |

| And a sin-offering was given for the sacrifice, and righteousness was cast down to the ground; and it practised, and prospered. | І воїнство віддане разом із щоденною жертвою за нечестя, і він, скидаючи істину на землю, діяв і мав успіх. |

|
| And I heard one saint speaking, and a saint said to a certain one speaking, How long shall the vision continue, even the removal of the sacrifice, and the bringing in of the sin of desolation; and how long shall the sanctuary and host be trampled? | І почув я одного святого, який говорив, і сказав цей святий комусь, хто запитував: «на скільки часу поширюється це видіння про щоденну жертву і про спустошливе нечестя, коли святиня і воїнство будуть потоптані?» |

| And he said to him, Evening and morning there shall be two thousand and four hundred days; and then the sanctuary shall be cleansed. | І сказав мені: «на дві тисячі триста вечорів і ранків; і тоді святилище очиститься». |

| And it came to pass, as I, even I Daniel, saw the vision, and sought to understand it, that, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. | І було: коли я, Даниїл, побачив це видіння і шукав значення його, ось, стала переді мною начебто подоба чоловіка. |
|

|
| And I heard the voice of a man between the banks of the Ubal; and he called, and said, Gabriel, cause that man to understand the vision. | І почув я від середини Улая голос людський, який воззвав і сказав: «Гавриїле! поясни йому це видіння!» |

| And he came and stood near where I stood: and when he came, I was struck with awe, and fell upon my face: but he said to me, Understand, son of man: for yet the vision is for an appointed time. | І він підійшов до того місця, де я стояв, і коли він прийшов, я жахнувся й упав на лице моє; і сказав він мені: «знай, сину людський, що видіння стосується кінця часу!» |

| And while he spoke with me, I fell upon my face to the earth: and he touched me, and set me on my feet. | І коли він говорив зі мною, я без тями лежав лицем моїм на землі; але він доторкнувся до мене і поставив мене на місце моє, |

| And he said, Behold, I make thee know the things that shall come to pass at the end of the wrath: for the vision is yet for an appointed time. | і сказав: «ось, я відкриваю тобі, що́ буде в останні дні гніву; бо це стосується кінця визначеного часу. |

|
| The ram which thou sawest that had the horns is the king of the Medes and Persians. | Баран, якого ти бачив із двома рогами, це царі мідійський і перський. |
|

|
| The he-goat is the king of the Greeks: and the great horn which was between his eyes, he is the first king. | А козел кошлатий — цар Греції, а великий ріг, який між очима його, це перший її цар; |
|

|
| And as for the one that was broken, in whose place there stood up four horns, four kings shall arise out of his nation, but not in their own strength. | він зломився, і замість нього вийшли інші чотири: це — чотири царства постануть з цього народу, але не з його силою. |

| And at the latter time of their kingdom, when their sins are coming to the full, there shall arise a king bold in countenance, and understanding riddles. | Під кінець же царства їх, коли відступники довершать міру беззаконь своїх, постане цар нахабний і майстерний у підступництві; |

| And his power shall be great, and he shall destroy wonderfully, and prosper, and practise, and shall destroy mighty men, and the holy people. | і зміцниться сила його, хоч і не його силою, і він буде чинити дивні спустошення і встигати і діяти і губити сильних і народ святих, |

|
| And the yoke of his chain shall prosper: there is craft in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by craft shall destroy many, and he shall stand up for the destruction of many, and shall crush them as eggs in his hand. | і при розумі його і підступництво буде мати успіх у руці його, і серцем своїм він піднесе, і серед світу погубить багатьох, і проти Владики владик повстане, але буде скрушений — не рукою. |

| and we have not hearkened to thy servants the prophets, who spoke in thy name to our kings, and our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. | і не слухали рабів Твоїх, пророків, які Твоїм ім’ям говорили царям нашим, і вельможам нашим, і батькам нашим, і всьому народу країни. |

| To thee, O Lord, belongs righteousness, and to us confusion of face, as at this day; to the men of Juda, and to the dwellers in Jerusalem, and to all Israel, to them that are near, and to them that are far off in all the earth, wherever thou hast scattered them, for the sin which they committed. | У Тебе, Господи, правда, а у нас на лицях сором, як день цей, у кожного юдея, у жителів Єрусалима й у всього Ізраїля, у ближніх і далеких, у всіх країнах, куди Ти вигнав їх за відступлення їх, з яким вони відступили від Тебе. |

| And he said to me, O Daniel, man greatly beloved, understand the words which I speak to thee, and stand upright: for I am now sent to thee. | And when he had spoken with me according to these words, I turned my face to the ground, and was pricked in the heart. | Коли він говорив мені такі слова, я припав лицем моїм до землі й онімів. |

| And, behold, as it were the likeness of a son of man touched my lips; and I opened my mouth, and spoke, and said to him that stood before me, O my lord, at the sight of thee my bowels were turned within me, and I had no strength. | Але ось, хтось, на вигляд схожий на синів людських, торкнувся вуст моїх, і я відкрив уста мої, став говорити і сказав тому, хто стояв переді мною: «господарю мій! від цього видіння нутрощі мої повернулися у мені, і не стало у мені сили. |

| And how shall thy servant be able, O my lord, to speak with this my lord? and as for me, from henceforth strength will not remain in me, and there is no breath left in me. | І як може говорити раб такого господаря мого з таким господарем моїм? бо у мені немає сили, і дихання завмерло у мені». |

| And there touched me again as it were the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me, | Тоді знову доторкнулася до мене та людська подоба й укріпила мене |

| and said to me, Fear not, man greatly beloved: peace be to thee, quit thyself like a man, and be strong. And when he had spoken with me, I received strength, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me. | і сказала: «не бійся, муже бажань! мир тобі; мужайся, мужайся!» І коли він говорив зі мною, я укріпився і сказав: «говори, господарю мій; бо ти укріпив мене». |

| And he said, Knowest thou, wherefore I am come to thee? and now I will return to fight with the prince of the Persians: and I was going in, and the prince of the Greeks came. | І він сказав: «чи знаєш, для чого я прийшов до тебе? | And now I will tell thee the truth. Behold, there shall yet rise up three kings in Persia: and the fourth shall be very far richer than all: and after that he is master of his wealth, he shall rise up against all the kingdoms of the Greeks. | Тепер звіщу тобі істину: ось, ще три царі постануть у Персії; потім четвертий перевершить усіх великим багатством, і коли підсилиться багатством своїм, то підніме всіх проти царства Грецького. |

| And there shall rise up a mighty king, and he shall be lord of a great empire, and shall do according to his will. | І постане цар могутній, який буде володарювати з великою владою, і буде діяти за своєю волею. |

| And when his kingdom shall stand up, it shall be broken, and shall be divided to the four winds of heaven; but not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled over: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, and given to others beside these. | Але коли він постане, царство його зруйнується і розділиться за чотирма вітрами небесними, і не до його нащадків перейде, і не з тією владою, з якою він володарював; бо роздрібниться царство його і дістанеться іншим, крім цих. |

| For the king of the north shall return, and bring a multitude greater than the former, and at the end of the times of years an invading army shall come with a great force, and with much substance. | Бо цар північний повернеться і виставить військо більше першого, і через кілька років швидко прийде з величезним військом і великим багатством. |

| And the king of the north shall come in, and cast up a mound, and take strong cities: and the arms of the king of the south shall withstand, and his chosen ones shall rise up, but there shall be no strength to stand. | І прийде цар північний, збудує вал і оволодіє укріпленим містом, і не устоять сили півдня, ні добірне військо його; не вистачить сили протистояти. |

| And he that comes in against him shall do according to his will, and there is no one to stand before him: and he shall stand in the land of beauty, and it shall be consumed by his hand. | І хто вийде до нього, буде діяти з волі його, і ніхто не встоїть перед ним; і на славній землі поставить стан свій, і вона постраждає від руки його. |

| And he shall set his face to come in with the force of his whole kingdom, and shall cause everything to prosper with him: and he shall give him the daughter of women to corrupt her: but she shall not continue, neither be on his side. | І наміриться увійти з усіма силами царства свого, і праведні з ним, і зробить це; і дочку дружин віддасть йому, на загибель її, але цей задум не відбудеться, і йому не буде користи з того. |

| And he shall turn his face to the islands, and shall take many, and cause princes to cease from their reproach: nevertheless his own reproach shall return to him. | Потім оберне лице своє до островів й оволодіє багатьма; але якийсь вождь припинить нанесену ним ганьбу і навіть свою ганьбу оберне на нього. |

| Then he shall turn back his face to the strength of his own land: but he shall become weak, and fall, and not be found. | Потім він оберне лице своє на укріплення своєї землі; але спіткнеться, упаде і не стане його. |

|
| And there shall arise out of his root one that shall cause a plant of the kingdom to pass over his place, earning kingly glory: and yet in those days shall he be broken, yet not openly, nor in war. | На місце його постане хтось, який пошле збирача податей, пройти по царству слави; але й він після небагатьох днів загине, і не від збурення і не у битві. |

| One shall stand on his place, who has been set at nought, and they have not put upon him the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in prosperously, and obtain the kingdom by deceitful ways. | І постане на місце його знехтуваний, і не віддадуть йому царських почестей, але він прийде без шуму і лестощами оволодіє царством. |

| At the set time he shall return, and shall come into the south, but the last expedition shall not be as the first. | У призначений час знову піде він на південь; але останній похід не такий буде, як попередній, |

| For the Citians issuing forth shall come against him, and he shall be brought low, and shall return, and shall be incensed against the holy covenant: and he shall do thus, and shall return, and have intelligence with them that have forsaken the holy covenant. | бо в один час з ним прийдуть кораблі киттимські; і він упаде духом, і повернеться, й озлобиться на святий завіт, і виконає свій намір, і знову домовиться з відступниками від святого завіту. |

| And seeds shall spring up out of him, and they shall profane the sanctuary of strength, and they shall remove the perpetual sacrifice, and make the abomination desolate. | І поставлена буде ним частина війська, яка осквернить святилище могутности, і припинить щоденну жертву, і поставить мерзоту запустіння. |

| And the transgressors shall bring about a covenant by deceitful ways: but a people knowing their God shall prevail, and do valiantly. | Тих, хто чинить нечестиво проти завіту, він залучить до себе лестощами; але люди, які шанують свого Бога, підсиляться і будуть діяти. |

|

| And some of them that understand shall fall, to try them as with fire, and to test them, and that they may be manifested at the time of the end, for the matter is yet for a set time. | Постраждають деякі і з розумних для випробування їх, очищення і для убілення до останнього часу; тому що є ще час до терміну. |

| And he shall do according to his will, and the king shall exalt and magnify himself against every god, and shall speak great swelling words, and shall prosper until the indignation shall be accomplished: for it is coming to an end. | І буде чинити цар той зі своєї сваволі, і піднесеться і возвеличиться вище за всяке божество, і про Бога богів стане говорити хульне і буде мати успіх, доки не звершиться гнів: бо, що наперед визначено, те сповниться. |

| And he shall not regard any gods of his fathers, nor the desire of women, neither shall he regard any deity: for he shall magnify himself above all. | І про богів батьків своїх він не помислить, і ні бажання дружин, ні навіть божества ніякого не вшанує; бо звеличить себе вище за усіх. |

|
| And he shall honour the god of forces on his place: and a god whom his fathers knew not he shall honour with gold, and silver, and precious stones, and desirable things. | Але богу укріплень на місці його він буде віддавати шану, і цього бога, якого не знали батьки його, він буде ушановувати золотом і сріблом, і коштовними каменями, і різними дорогоцінностями, |

| And at the end of the time he shall conflict with the king of the south: and the king of the north shall come against him with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and they shall enter into the land: and he shall break in pieces, and pass on: | Під кінець же часу буде воювати з ним цар південний, і цар північний кинеться як буря на нього з колісницями, вершниками і численними кораблями, і нападе на області, наводнить їх, і пройде через них. |

| Many must be tested, and thoroughly whitened, and tried with fire, and sanctified; but the transgressors shall transgress: and none of the transgressors shall understand; but the wise shall understand. | Багато хто очиститься, убілиться і переплавлений буде через спокуси, нечестиві ж будуть чинити нечестиво, і не зрозуміє цього ніхто з нечестивих, а мудрі зрозуміють. |

| There dwelt a man in Babylon, called Joacim: | У Вавилоні жив чоловік, на ім’я Іоаким. |

| and he took a wife, whose name was Susanna, the daughter of Chelcias, a very fair woman, and one that feared the Lord. | І взяв він дружину, на ім’я Сусанна, дочку Хелкія, дуже красиву і богобоязку. |
|

|

|
| Her parents also were righteous, and taught their daughter according to the law of Moses. | Батьки її були праведні і навчили дочку свою закону Мойсеєвого. |
|

|

|
| Now Joacim was a very rich man, and had a fair garden joining unto his house; and to him resorted the Jews; because he was more honourable than all others. | Іоаким був дуже багатий, і був у нього сад поблизу дому його; і сходилися до нього юдеї, тому що він був найпочесніший з усіх. |

|
| The same year were appointed two of the ancients of the people to be judges, such as the Lord spake of, that wickedness came from Babylon from ancient judges, who seemed to govern the people. | І були поставлені два старці з народу суддями у тім році, про яких Господь сказав, що беззаконня вийшло з Вавилона від старійшин-суддів, які здавалися такими, що керують народом. |

| These kept much at Joacim's house, and all that had any suits in law came unto them. | Вони постійно бували у домі Іоакима, і до них приходили всі, хто мав спірні справи. |

| And they perverted their own mind, and turned away their eyes, that they might not look unto heaven, nor remember just judgments. | і розбестили розум свій, і відхилили очі свої, щоб не дивитися на небо і не згадувати про праведні суди. |

| And albeit they both were wounded with her love, yet durst not one shew another his grief. | Обоє вони були уражені похіттю до неї, але не відкривали один одному болю свого, |

| Behold, the garden doors are shut, that no man can see us, and we are in love with thee; therefore consent unto us, and lie with us. | Ось, двері саду замкнені і ніхто нас не бачить, і ми маємо похіть до тебе, тому погодься з нами і побудь з нами. |

|
| If thou wilt not, we will bear witness against thee, that a young man was with thee: and therefore thou didst send away thy maids from thee. | Якщо ж не так, то ми будемо свідчити проти тебе, що з тобою був юнак, і тому ти відіслала від себе служниць твоїх. |
|

|
| Then Susanna sighed, and said, I am straitened on every side: for if I do this thing, it is death unto me: and if I do it not, I cannot escape your hands. | Тоді застогнала Сусанна і сказала: тісно мені звідусіль; бо, якщо я зроблю це, смерть мені, а якщо не зроблю, то не уникну рук ваших. |

| It is better for me to fall into your hands, and not do it, than to sin in the sight of the Lord. | Краще для мене не зробити цього і впасти у руки ваші, ніж згрішити перед Господом. |

| With that Susanna cried with a loud voice: and the two elders cried out against her. | І закричала Сусанна гучним голосом; закричали також і обидва старійшини проти неї, |

|
| Then ran the one, and opened the garden door. | і один побіг і відчинив двері саду. |
|

|

|
| So when the servants of the house heard the cry in the garden, they rushed in at a private door, to see what was done unto her. | Коли ж ті, що знаходилися у домі, почули крик у саду, заскочили бічними дверима, щоб бачити, що трапилося з нею. |

|
| But when the elders had declared their matter, the servants were greatly ashamed: for there was never such a report made of Susanna. | І коли старійшини сказали слова свої, слуги її надзвичайно були присоромлені, тому що ніколи нічого такого про Сусанну не говорили. |
|

| And it came to pass the next day, when the people were assembled to her husband Joacim, the two elders came also full of mischievous imagination against Susanna to put her to death; | І було на другий день, коли зібрався народ до Іоакима, чоловіка її, прийшли й обидва старійшини, сповнені беззаконного заміру проти Сусанни, щоб віддати її на смерть. |

| and said before the people, Send for Susanna, the daughter of Chelcias, Joacim's wife. And so they sent. | І сказали вони перед народом: пошліть за Сусанною, дочкою Хелкія, дружиною Іоакима. І послали. |

| So she came with her father and mother, her children, and all her kindred. | І прийшла вона, і батьки її, і діти її, і всі родичі її. |

| Now Susanna was a very delicate woman, and beauteous to behold. | Сусанна була дуже ніжна і красива лицем, |

|
| And these wicked men commanded to uncover her face (for she was covered), that they might be filled with her beauty. | і ці беззаконники наказали відкрити лице її, оскільки воно було закрите, щоб насититися красою її. |

| Therefore her friends and all that saw her wept. | Родичі ж і всі, хто дивився на неї, плакали. |

| Then the two elders stood up in the midst of the people, and laid their hands upon her head. | А обидва старійшини, вставши посеред народу, поклали руки на голову її. |

|
| And she weeping looked up toward heaven: for her heart trusted in the Lord. | Вона ж у сльозах дивилася на небо, бо серце її уповало на Господа. |
|

|
| And the elders said, As we walked in the garden alone, this woman came in with two maids, and shut the garden doors, and sent the maids away. | І сказали старійшини: коли ми ходили по саду одні, увійшла ця з двома служницями і зачинила двері саду, і відіслала служниць; |
|

|
| Then a young man, who there was hid, came unto her, and lay with her. | і прийшов до неї юнак, який ховався там, і ліг з нею. |
|

|
| Then we that stood in a corner of the garden, seeing this wickedness, ran unto them. | Ми, знаходячись у кутку саду і бачачи таке беззаконня, побігли на них, |

|
| And when we saw them together, the man we could not hold: for he was stronger than we, and opened the door, and leaped out. | і побачили їх з’єднаними, і того не могли затримати, тому що він був сильніший за нас і, відчинивши двері, вискочив. |

|
| But having taken this woman, we asked who the young man was, but she would not tell us: these things do we testify. | Але цю ми схопили і допитували: хто був цей юнак? але вона не хотіла оголосити нам. Про це ми свідчимо. |

| Then the assembly believed them, as those that were the elders and judges of the people: so they condemned her to death. | І повірило їм зібрання, як старійшинам народу і суддям, і засудили її на смерть. |

| Then Susanna cried out with a loud voice, and said, O everlasting God, that knowest the secrets, and knowest all things before they be: | Заволала Сусанна гучним голосом і сказала: Боже вічний, що відаєш таємне і знаєш усе раніше буття його! |

|
| thou knowest that they have borne false witness against me, and, behold, I must die; whereas I never did such things as these men have maliciously invented against me. | Ти знаєш, що вони неправдиво свідчили проти мене, і ось, я помираю, не зробивши нічого, що ці люди злісно вигадали на мене. |

|
| And the Lord heard her voice. | І почув Господь голос її. |

| Therefore when she was led to be put to death, the Lord raised up the holy spirit of a young youth, whose name was Daniel: | І коли вона ведена була на смерть, збудив Бог святий дух молодого юнака, на ім’я Даниїл, |

|
| who cried with a loud voice, I am clear from the blood of this woman. | і він закричав гучним голосом: чистий я від крови її! |
|

|
47
|
| Then all the people turned them toward him, and said, What mean these words that thou hast spoken? | Тоді обернувся до нього весь народ і сказав: що це за слово, яке ти сказав? |
|

|
48
|
| So he standing in the midst of them said, Are ye such fools, ye sons of Israel, that without examination or knowledge of the truth ye have condemned a daughter of Israel? | Тоді він, ставши посеред них, сказав: чи так ви нерозумні, сини Ізраїля, що, не дослідивши і не довідавшись істини, засудили дочку Ізраїля? |

| Return again to the place of judgment: for they have borne false witness against her. | Поверніться у суд, бо ці неправдиво проти неї засвідчили. |
|

|
| Wherefore all the people turned again in haste, and the elders said unto him, Come, sit down among us, and shew it us, seeing God hath given thee the honour of an elder. | І негайно весь народ повернувся, і сказали йому старійшини: сідай посеред нас і оголоси нам, тому що Бог дав тобі старійшинство. |

| Then said Daniel unto them, Put these two aside one far from another, and I will examine them. | І сказав їм Даниїл: відокремте їх один від одного подалі, і я допитаю їх. |

| So when they were put asunder one from another, he called one of them, and said unto him, O thou that art waxen old in wickedness, now thy sins which thou hast committed aforetime are come to light: | Коли ж вони відокремлені були один від одного, покликав одного з них і сказав йому: ти, що постарів у злих днях! нині виявилися гріхи твої, які ти робив колись, |

| for thou hast pronounced false judgment, and hast condemned the innocent, and hast let the guilty go free; albeit the Lord saith, The innocent and righteous shalt thou not slay. | чинячи суди неправедні, засуджуючи невинних і виправдовуючи винних, тоді як Господь говорить: «невинного і правого не умертвляй». |

| Now then, if thou hast seen her, tell me, Under what tree sawest thou them companying together? And he said, Under a mastick tree. | Отже, якщо ти цю бачив, скажи, під яким деревом бачив ти їх, що розмовляли одне з одним? Він сказав: під мастиковим. |

| And Daniel said, Very well; thou hast lied against thine own head; for even now the angel of God hath received the sentence of God to cut thee in two. | Даниїл сказав: точно, сказав ти неправду на твою голову; бо ось, ангел Божий, прийнявши рішення від Бога, розсіче тебе навпіл. |

| So he put him aside, and commanded to bring the other, and said unto him, O thou seed of Chanaan, and not of Juda, beauty hath deceived thee, and lust hath perverted thine heart. | Видаливши його, він наказав привести іншого і сказав йому: плем’я Ханаана, а не Іуди! Краса спокусила тебе, і похіть розбестила серце твоє. |

| Thus have ye dealt with the daughters of Israel, and they for fear companied with you: but the daughter of Juda would not abide your wickedness. | Так чинили ви з дочками Ізраїля, і вони зі страху мали спілкування з вами; але дочка Іуди не потерпіла беззаконня вашого. |

| Now therefore tell me, Under what tree didst thou take them companying together? And he said, Under a holm tree. | Отже, скажи мені: під яким деревом ти застав їх, що розмовляли між собою? Він сказав: під зеленим дубом. |

| Then said Daniel unto him, Well; thou hast also lied against thine own head: for the angel of God waiteth with the sword to cut thee in two, that he may destroy you. | Даниїл сказав йому: точно, сказав ти неправду на твою голову; бо ангел Божий з мечем чекає, щоб розсікти тебе навпіл, щоб знищити вас. |

| With that all the assembly cried out with a loud voice, and praised God, who saveth them that trust in him. | Тоді все зібрання закричало гучним голосом, і благословили Бога, Який спасає тих, хто надіється на Нього, |

| And they arose against the two elders, for Daniel had convicted them of false witness by their own mouth: | і повстали на обох старійшин, тому що Даниїл їхніми вустами викрив їх, що вони неправдиво свідчили; |
|

|
| and according to the law of Moses they did unto them in such sort as they maliciously intended to do to their neighbour: and they put them to death. Thus the innocent blood was saved the same day. | і зробили з ними так, як вони зловмислили проти ближнього, за законом Мойсеєвим, і умертвили їх; і врятована була у той день кров невинна. |

| Therefore Chelcias and his wife praised God for their daughter Susanna, with Joacim her husband, and all their kindred, because there was no dishonesty found in her. | Хелкія ж і дружина його прославили Бога за дочку свою Сусанну з Іоакимом, чоловіком її, і з усіма родичами, тому що не знайдено було у ній ганебного діла. |

| From that day forth was Daniel had in great reputation in the sight of the people. | І Даниїл став великим перед народом з того дня і потім. |

| And king Astyages was gathered to his fathers, and Cyrus of Persia received his kingdom. | Цар Астиаг приклався до батьків своїх, і Кир, персянин, прийняв царство його. |

|
| And Daniel conversed with the king, and was honoured above all his friends. | І Даниїл жив разом з царем і був славнішим за всіх друзів його. |
|

|

|
| Now the Babylonians had an idol, called Bel, and there were spent upon him every day twelve great measures of fine flour, and forty sheep, and six vessels of wine. | Був у вавилонян ідол, на ім’я Вил, і витрачали на нього щодня двадцять великих мір пшеничного борошна, сорок овець і вина шість мір. |

| And the king worshipped it, and went daily to adore it: but Daniel worshipped his own God. And the king said unto him, Why dost not thou worship Bel? | Цар шанував його і ходив щодня поклонятися йому; Даниїл же поклонявся Богу своєму. І сказав йому цар: чому ти не поклоняєшся Вилу? |

| Who answered and said, Because I may not worship idols made with hands, but the living God, who hath created the heaven and the earth, and hath sovereignty over all flesh. | Він відповів: тому що я не поклоняюся ідолам, зробленим руками, але поклоняюся живому Богу, Який створив небо і землю і володарює над усякою плоттю. |

| Then said the king unto him, Thinkest thou not that Bel is a living god? seest thou not how much he eateth and drinketh every day? | Цар сказав: чи не думаєш ти, що Вил неживий бог? чи не бачиш, скільки він їсть і п’є щодня? |

| Then Daniel smiled, and said, O king, be not deceived: for this is but clay within, and brass without, and did never eat or drink any thing. | Даниїл, посміхнувшись, сказав: не обманюйся, царю; бо він усередині глина, а зовні мідь, і ніколи не їв, не пив. |
|

|
| So the king was wroth, and called for his priests, and said unto them, If ye tell me not who this is that devoureth these expences, ye shall die. | Тоді цар, розгнівавшись, прикликав жерців своїх і сказав їм: якщо ви не скажете мені, хто з’їдає все це, то помрете. |
|

|
| But if ye can certify me that Bel devoureth them, then Daniel shall die: for he hath spoken blasphemy against Bel. And Daniel said unto the king, Let it be according to thy word. | Якщо ж ви доведете мені, що з’їдає це Вил, то помре Даниїл, тому що сказав хулу на Вила. І сказав Даниїл цареві: нехай буде за словом твоїм. |

| Now the priests of Bel were threescore and ten, beside their wives and children. And the king went with Daniel into the temple of Bel. | Жерців Вила було сімдесят, крім дружин і дітей. |

| So Bel's priests said, Lo, we go out: but thou, O king, set on the meat, and make ready the wine, and shut the door fast, and seal it with thine own signet; | І прийшов цар з Даниїлом у храм Вила, і сказали жерці Вила: ось, ми вийдемо геть, а ти, царю, постав їжу і, наливши вина, замкни двері і запечатай перснем твоїм. |

| and to-morrow when thou comest in, if thou findest not that Bel hath eaten up all, we will suffer death: or else Daniel, that speaketh falsely against us. | І якщо завтра ти прийдеш і не знайдеш, що усе з’їдено Вилом, ми помремо, або Даниїл, який сказав неправду на нас. |

| So when they were gone forth, the king set meats before Bel. | In the morning betime the king arose, and Daniel with him. | На другий день цар встав рано і Даниїл з ним, |

| And the king said, Daniel, are the seals whole? And he said, Yea, O king, they be whole. | і сказав: чи цілі печатки, Даниїле? Він сказав: цілі, царю. |
|

| And as soon as he had opened the door, the king looked upon the table, and cried with a loud voice, Great art thou, O Bel, and with thee is no deceit at all. | І як тільки відчинені були двері, цар, глянувши на стіл, викликнув гучним голосом: великий ти, Виле, і немає ніякого обману у тобі! |

| Then laughed Daniel, and held the king that he should not go in, and said, Behold now the pavement, and mark well whose footsteps are these. | Даниїл, посміхнувшись, утримав царя, щоб він не входив усередину, і сказав: подивися на підлогу і поміть, чиї це сліди. |

| and took the priests with their wives and children, who shewed him the private doors, where they came in, and consumed such things as were upon the table. | І, розгнівавшись, цар наказав схопити жерців, дружин їхніх і дітей і вони показали потайні двері, якими вони входили і з’їдали, що було на столі. |

| Therefore the king slew them, and delivered Bel into Daniel's power, who destroyed him and his temple. | Тоді цар повелів умертвити їх і віддав Вила Даниїлові, і він зруйнував його і храм його. |

| And in that same place there was a great dragon, which they of Babylon worshipped. | Був на тому місці великий дракон, і вавилоняни шанували його. |

| And the king said unto Daniel, Wilt thou also say that this is of brass? lo, he liveth, he eateth and drinketh; thou canst not say that he is no living god: therefore worship him. | І сказав цар Даниїлу: чи не скажеш і про цього, що він мідь? ось, він живий, і їсть і п’є; ти не можеш сказати, що цей бог не живий; і отже, поклонися йому. |

| Then said Daniel unto the king, I will worship the Lord my God: for he is the living God. | Даниїл сказав: Господу Богу моєму поклоняюся, тому що Він Бог живий. |

| But give me leave, O king, and I shall slay this dragon without sword or staff. The king said, I give thee leave. | Але ти, царю, дай мені дозвіл, і я умертвлю дракона без меча і жезла. Цар сказав: даю тобі. |

| Then Daniel took pitch, and fat, and hair, and did seethe them together, and made lumps thereof: this he put in the dragon's mouth, and so the dragon burst in sunder: and Daniel said, Lo, these are the gods ye worship. | Тоді Даниїл узяв смоли, жиру і волосся, зварив це разом і, зробивши з цього клубок, кинув його у пащу дракону, і дракон розсівся. І сказав Даниїл: ось ваші святині! |

| When they of Babylon heard that, they took great indignation, and conspired against the king, saying, The king is become a Jew, and he hath destroyed Bel, he hath slain the dragon, and put the priests to death. | Коли ж вавилоняни почули про те, сильно обурилися і повстали проти царя, і сказали: цар зробився юдеєм, Вила зруйнував і убив дракона, і віддав на смерть жреців, |

| So they came to the king, and said, Deliver us Daniel, or else we will destroy thee and thine house. | і, прийшовши до царя, сказали: віддай нам Даниїла, інакше ми умертвимо тебе і дім твій. |

| Now when the king saw that they pressed him sore, being constrained, he delivered Daniel unto them; | І коли цар побачив, що вони сильно наполягають, змушений був віддати їм Даниїла, |

| who cast him into the lions' den: where he was six days. | вони ж кинули його в рів лев’ячий, і він пробув там шість днів. |

|
| And in the den there were seven lions, and they had given them every day two carcases, and two sheep: which then were not given to them, to the intent they might devour Daniel. | У рові було сім левів, і давалося їм щодня по два тіла і по дві вівці; у цей час їм не давали їх, щоб вони з’їли Даниїла. |

| Now there was in Jewry a prophet, called Habbacuc, who had made pottage, and had broken bread in a bowl, and was going into the field, for to bring it to the reapers. | Був у Юдеї пророк Аввакум, який, зваривши юшку і накришивши хліба у блюдо, йшов на поле, щоб віднести це женцям. |

| But the angel of the Lord said unto Habbacuc, Go, carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel, who is in the lions' den. | Але ангел Господній сказав Аввакуму: віднеси цей обід, який у тебе, у Вавилон до Даниїла, у рів лев’ячий. |

| And Habbacuc said, Lord, I never saw Babylon; neither do I know where the den is. | Аввакум сказав: господарю! Вавилона я ніколи не бачив і рову не знаю. |

| Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown, and bare him by the hair of his head, and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den. | Тоді ангел Господній узяв його за тім’я і, піднявши його за волосся голови його, поставив його у Вавилоні над ровом силою духа свого. |

| And Habbacuc cried, saying, O Daniel, Daniel, take the dinner which God hath sent thee. | І воззвав Аввакум і сказав: Даниїле! Даниїле! візьми обід, який Бог послав тобі. |

| And Daniel said, Thou hast remembered me, O God: neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee. | Даниїл сказав: пом’янув Ти про мене, Боже, і не залишив тих, хто любить Тебе. |
|

| So Daniel arose, and did eat: and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately. | І встав Даниїл і їв; ангел же Божий миттєво поставив Аввакума на його місце. |
|

|
| Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel: and when he came to the den, he looked in, and, behold, Daniel was sitting. | У сьомий день прийшов цар, щоб потужити за Даниїлом і, підійшовши до рову, глянув у нього, і ось, Даниїл сидів. |
|

|
| Then cried the king with a loud voice, saying, Great art thou, O Lord God of Daniel, and there is none other beside thee. | І викликнув цар гучним голосом, і сказав: великий Ти, Господи Боже Даниїлів, і немає іншого, крім Тебе! |

| And he drew him out, and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den: and they were devoured in a moment before his face. | І наказав витягти Даниїла, а винуватців його погублення кинути у рів, — і вони вмить були з’їдені у присутності його. |
