The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, who reigned in Israel;	ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ Σολομῶντος υἱοῦ Δαυίδ, ὃς ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν ᾿Ισραήλ,

to know wisdom and instruction, and to perceive words of understanding;	γνῶναι σοφίαν καὶ παιδείαν νοῆσαί τε λόγους φρονήσεως

to receive also hard sayings, and to understand true justice, and how to direct judgment;	δέξασθαί τε στροφὰς λόγων νοῆσαί τε δικαιοσύνην ἀληθῆ καὶ κρίμα κατευθύνειν,
4	4
that he might give subtlety to the simple, and to the young man discernment and understanding.	ἵνα δῷ ἀκάκοις πανουργίαν, παιδὶ δὲ νέῳ αἴσθησίν τε καὶ ἔννοιαν·
5	5
For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and the man of understanding will gain direction;	τῶνδε γὰρ ἀκούσας σοφὸς σοφώτερος ἔσται, ὁ δὲ νοήμων κυβέρνησιν κτήσεται.

and will understand a parable, and a dark speech; the sayings of the wise also, and riddles.	νοήσει τε παραβολὴν καὶ σκοτεινὸν λόγον ρήσεις τε σοφῶν καὶ αἰνίγματα.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and there is good understanding to all that practise it: and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nought wisdom and instruction.	᾿Αρχὴ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου, σύνεσις δὲ ἀγαθὴ πᾶσι τοῖς ποιοῦσι αὐτήν· εὐσέβεια δὲ εἰς Θεὸν ἀρχὴ αἰσθήσεως, σοφίαν δὲ καὶ παιδείαν ἀσεβεῖς ἐξουθενήσουσιν.

Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and reject not the rules of thy mother.	ἄκουε, υἱέ, παιδείαν πατρός σου καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ θεσμοὺς μητρός σου·

For thou shalt receive for thine head a crown of graces, and a chain of gold round thy neck.	στέφανον γὰρ χαρίτων δέξῃ σῇ κορυφῇ καὶ κλοιὸν χρύσεον περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ.

My son, let not ungodly men lead thee astray, neither consent thou to them.	υἱέ, μή σε πλανήσωσιν ἄνδρες ἀσεβεῖς, μηδὲ βουληθῇς,

If they should exhort thee, saying, Come with us, partake in blood, and let us unjustly hide the just man in the earth:	ἐὰν παρακαλέσωσί σε λέγοντες· ἐλθὲ μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν, κοινώνησον αἵματος, κρύψωμεν δὲ εἰς γῆν ἄνδρα δίκαιον ἀδίκως,

and let us swallow him alive, as Hades would, and remove the memorial of him from the earth:	καταπίωμεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὥσπερ ᾅδης ζῶντα καὶ ἄρωμεν αὐτοῦ τὴν μνήμην ἐκ γῆς·
13	13
let us seize on his valuable property, and let us fill our houses with spoils:	τὴν κτῆσιν αὐτοῦ τὴν πολυτελῆ καταλαβώμεθα, πλήσωμεν δὲ οἴκους ἡμετέρους σκύλων·

but do thou cast in thy lot with us, and let us all provide a common purse, and let us have one pouch:	τὸν δὲ σὸν κλῆρον βάλε ἐν ἡμῖν, κοινὸν δὲ βαλάντιον κτησώμεθα πάντες, καὶ μαρσίππιον ἓν γενηθήτω ἡμῖν.

go not in the way with them, but turn aside thy foot from their paths:	μὴ πορευθῆς ἐν ὁδῷ μετ᾿ αὐτῶν, ἔκλινον δὲ τὸν πόδα σου ἐκ τῶν τρίβων αὐτῶν·

for nets are not without cause spread for birds.	οὐ γὰρ ἀδίκως ἐκτείνεται δίκτυα πτερωτοῖς.
18	18
For they that are concerned in murder store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of transgressors is evil.	αὐτοὶ γὰρ οἱ φόνου μετέχοντες θησαυρίζουσιν ἑαυτοῖς κακά, ἡ δὲ καταστροφὴ ἀνδρῶν παρανόμων κακή.

These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life.	αὗται αἱ ὁδοί εἰσι πάντων τῶν συντελούντων τὰ ἄνομα· τῇ γὰρ ἀσεβείᾳ τὴν ἑαυτῶν ψυχὴν ἀφαιροῦνται.

Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly.	Σοφία ἐν ἐξόδοις ὑμνεῖται, ἐν δὲ πλατείαις παρρησίαν ἄγει·
21	21
And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says,	ἐπ᾿ ἄκρων τειχέων κηρύσσεται, ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις δυναστῶν παρεδρεύει, ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις πόλεως θαρροῦσα λέγει·

So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs.	ὅσον ἂν χρόνον ἄκακοι ἔχωνται τῆς δικαιοσύνης, οὐκ αἰσχυνθήσονται· οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες, τῆς ὕβρεως ὄντες ἐπιθυμηταί, ἀσεβεῖς γενόμενοι ἐμίσησαν αἴσθησιν

Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.	καὶ ὑπεύθυνοι ἐγένοντο ἐλέγχοις, ἰδοὺ προήσομαι ὑμῖν ἐμῆς πνοῆς ρῆσιν, διδάξω δὲ ὑμᾶς τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον.

Since I called, and ye did not hearken; and I spoke at length, and ye gave no heed;	ἐπειδὴ ἐκάλουν καὶ οὐχ ὑπηκούσατε καὶ ἐξέτεινα λόγους καὶ οὐ προσείχετε,

but ye set at nought my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs;	ἀλλὰ ἀκύρους ἐποιεῖτε ἐμᾶς βουλάς, τοῖς δὲ ἐμοῖς ἐλέγχοις οὐ προσείχετε,

therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against you when ruin comes upon you:	τοιγαροῦν κἀγὼ τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ ἀπωλείᾳ ἐπιγελάσομαι, καταχαροῦμαι δὲ ἡνίκα ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθρος,

yea when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and your overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you.	καὶ ὡς ἂν ἀφίκηται ὑμῖν ἄφνω θόρυβος, ἡ δὲ καταστροφὴ ὁμοίως καταιγίδι παρῇ, καὶ ὅταν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν θλῖψις καὶ πολιορκία ἢ ὅταν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθρος.

For it shall be that when ye call upon me, I will not hearken to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find me.	ἔσται γὰρ ὅταν ἐπικαλέσησθέ με, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ εἰσακούσομαι ὑμῶν· ζητήσουσί με κακοί, καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσουσιν·

For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord:	ἐμίσησαν γὰρ σοφίαν, τὸν δὲ λόγον τοῦ Κυρίου οὐ προείλαντο,
30	30
neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs.	οὐδὲ ἤθελον ἐμαῖς προσέχειν βουλαῖς, ἐμυκτήριζον δὲ ἐμοὺς ἐλέγχους.
31	31
Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness.	τοιγαροῦν ἔδονται τῆς ἑαυτῶν ὁδοῦ τοὺς καρποὺς καὶ τῆς ἑαυτῶν ἀσεβείας πλησθήσονται·

For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly.	ἀνθ᾿ ὧν γὰρ ἠδίκουν νηπίους, φονευθήσονται, καὶ ἐξετασμὸς ἀσεβεῖς ὀλεῖ.

But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil.	ὁ δὲ ἐμοῦ ἀκούων κατασκηνώσει ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι καὶ ἡσυχάσει ἀφόβως ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ.
Chapter 2	Κεφάλαιο 2

My son, if thou wilt receive the utterance of my commandment, and hide it with thee;	ΥΙΕ, ἐὰν δεξάμενος ρῆσιν ἐμῆς ἐντολῆς κρύψῃς παρὰ σεαυτῷ,
2	2
thine ear shall hearken to wisdom; thou shalt also apply thine heart to understanding, and shalt apply it to the instruction of thy son.	ὑπακούσεται σοφία τὸ οὖς σου, καὶ παραβαλεῖς καρδίαν σου εἰς σύνεσιν, παραβαλεῖς δὲ αὐτὴν ἐπὶ νουθέτησιν τῷ υἱῷ σου.

For if thou shalt call to wisdom, and utter thy voice for understanding;	ἐὰν γὰρ τὴν σοφίαν ἐπικαλέσῃ καὶ τῇ συνέσει δῷς φωνήν σου, τὴν δὲ αἴσθησιν ζητήσῃς μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ,

and if thou shalt seek it as silver, and search diligently for it as for treasures;	καὶ ἐὰν ζητήσῃς αὐτὴν ὡς ἀργύριον καὶ ὡς θησαυροὺς ἐξερευνήσῃς αὐτήν,
5	5
then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.	τότε συνήσεις φόβον Κυρίου καὶ ἐπίγνωσιν Θεοῦ εὑρήσεις.

For the Lord gives wisdom; and from his presence come knowledge and understanding,	ὅτι Κύριος δίδωσι σοφίαν, καὶ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ γνῶσις καὶ σύνεσις·
7	7
and he treasures up salvation for them that walk uprightly: he will protect their way;	καὶ θησαυρίζει τοῖς κατορθοῦσι σωτηρίαν, ὑπερασπιεῖ τὴν πορείαν αὐτῶν
8	8
that he may guard the righteous ways: and he will preserve the way of them that fear him.	τοῦ φυλάξαι ὁδοὺς δικαιωμάτων καὶ ὁδὸν εὐλαβουμένων αὐτὸν διαφυλάξει.
9	9
Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment; and shalt direct all thy course aright.	τότε συνήσεις δικαιοσύνην καὶ κρίμα καὶ κατορθώσεις πάντας ἄξονας ἀγαθούς.
10	10
For if wisdom shall come into thine understanding, and discernment shall seem pleasing to thy soul,	ἐὰν γὰρ ἔλθῃ ἡ σοφία εἰς σὴν διάνοιαν, ἡ δὲ αἴσθησις τῇ σῇ ψυχῇ καλὴ εἶναι δόξῃ,

good counsel shall guard thee, and holy understanding shall keep thee;	βουλὴ καλὴ φυλάξει σε, ἔννοια δὲ ὁσία τηρήσει σε,
12	12
to deliver thee from the evil way, and from the man that speaks nothing faithfully.	ἵνα ρύσηταί σε ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ κακῆς καὶ ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς λαλοῦντος μηδὲν πιστόν.
13	13
Alas for those who forsake right paths, to walk in ways of darkness;	ὦ οἱ ἐγκαταλείποντες ὁδοὺς εὐθείας τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ἐν ὁδοῖς σκότους·
14	14
who rejoice in evils, and delight in wicked perverseness;	οἱ εὐφραινόμενοι ἐπὶ κακοῖς καὶ χαίροντες ἐπὶ διαστροφῇ κακῆ·
15	15
whose paths are crooked, and their courses winding;	ὧν αἱ τρίβοι σκολίαι καὶ καμπύλαι αἱ τροχιαὶ αὐτῶν
16	16
to remove thee far from the straight way, and to estrange thee from a righteous purpose. My son, let not evil counsel overtake thee,	τοῦ μακράν σε ποιῆσαι ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ εὐθείας καὶ ἀλλότριον τῆς δικαίας γνώμης.
17	17
of her who has forsaken the instruction of her youth, and forgotten the covenant of God.	υἱέ, μή σὲ καταλάβῃ κακὴ βουλή, ἡ ἀπολιποῦσα διδασκαλίαν νεότητος καὶ διαθήκην θείαν ἐπιλελησμένη·
18	18
For she has fixed her house near death, and guided her wheels near Hades with the giants.	ἔθετο γὰρ παρὰ τῷ θανάτῳ τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς καὶ παρὰ τῷ ἅδῃ μετὰ τῶν γηγενῶν τοὺς ἄξονας αὐτῆς.
19	19
None that go by her shall return, neither shall they take hold of right paths, for they are not apprehended of the years of life.	πάντες οἱ πορευόμενοι ἐν αὐτῇ οὐκ ἀναστρέψουσιν, οὐδὲ μὴ καταλάβωσι τρίβους εὐθείας· οὐ γὰρ καταλαμβάνονται ὑπὸ ἐνιαυτῶν ζωῆς.

For had they gone in good paths, they would have found the paths of righteousness easy.	εἰ γὰρ ἐπορεύοντο τρίβους ἀγαθάς, εὕροσαν ἂν τρίβους δικαιοσύνης λείας.
21	21
For the upright shall dwell in the earth, and the holy shall be left behind in it.	χρηστοὶ ἔσονται οἰκήτορες γῆς, ἄκακοι δὲ ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ· ὅτι εὐθεῖς κατασκηνώσουσι γῆν, καὶ ὅσιοι ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ.

The paths of the ungodly shall perish out of the earth, and transgressors shall be driven away from it.	ὁδοὶ ἀσεβῶν ἐκ γῆς ὀλοῦνται, οἱ δὲ παράνομοι ἐξωσθήσονται ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς.
Chapter 3	Κεφάλαιο 3

1	1
My son, forget not my laws; but let thine heart keep my words:	ΥΙΕ, ἐμῶν νομίμων μὴ ἐπιλανθάνου, τὰ δὲ ρήματά μου τηρείτω σὴ καρδία·
2	2
for length of existence, and years of life, and peace, shall they add to thee.	μῆκος γὰρ βίου καὶ ἔτη ζωῆς καὶ εἰρήνην προσθήσουσί σοι.
3	3
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; but bind them about thy neck:	ἐλεημοσύναι καὶ πίστεις μὴ ἐκλιπέτωσάν σε, ἄφαψαι δὲ αὐτὰς ἐπὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ, καὶ εὑρήσεις χάριν·

so shalt thou find favour: and do thou provide things honest in the sight of the Lord, and of men.	καὶ προνοοῦ καλὰ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ἀνθρώπων.
5	5
Trust in God with all thine heart; and be not exalted in thine own wisdom.	ἴσθι πεποιθὼς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐπὶ Θεῷ ἐπὶ δὲ σῇ σοφίᾳ μὴ ἐπαίρου·
6	6
In all thy ways acquaint thyself with her, that she may rightly direct thy paths.	ἐν πάσαις ὁδοῖς σου γνώριζε αὐτήν, ἵνα ὀρθοτομῇ τὰς ὁδούς σου, ὁ δὲ πούς σου μὴ προσκόψῃ.

Be not wise in thine own conceit; but fear God, and depart from all evil.	μὴ ἴσθι φρόνιμος παρὰ σεαυτῷ, φοβοῦ δὲ τὸν Θεὸν καὶ ἔκκλινε ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ·
8	8
Then shall there be health to thy body, and good keeping to thy bones.	τότε ἴασις ἔσται τῷ σώματί σου καὶ ἐπιμέλεια τοῖς ὀστέοις σου.
9	9
Honour the Lord with thy just labours, and give him the first of thy fruits of righteousness:	τίμα τὸν Κύριον ἀπὸ σῶν δικαίων πόνων καὶ ἀπάρχου αὐτῷ ἀπὸ σῶν καρπῶν δικαιοσύνης,
10	10
that thy storehouses may be completely filled with corn, and that thy presses may burst forth with wine.	ἵνα πίμπληται τὰ ταμιεῖά σου πλησμονῆς σίτῳ, οἴνῳ δὲ αἱ ληνοί σου ἐκβλύζωσιν.
11	11
My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:	Υἱέ, μὴ ὀλιγώρει παιδείας Κυρίου, μηδὲ ἐκλύου ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐλεγχόμενος·
12	12
for whom the Lord loves, he rebukes, and scourges every son whom he receives.	ὃν γὰρ ἀγαπᾷ Κύριος παιδεύει, μαστιγοῖ δὲ πάντα υἱὸν ὃν παραδέχεται.
13	13
Blessed is the man who has found wisdom, and the mortal who knows prudence.	μακάριος ἄνθρωπος ὃς εὗρε σοφίαν καὶ θνητὸς ὃς εἶδε φρόνησιν·
14	14
For it is better to traffic for her, than for treasures of gold and silver.	κρεῖσσον γὰρ αὐτὴν ἐμπορεύεσθαι ἢ χρυσίου καὶ ἀργυρίου θησαυρούς.
15	15
And she is more valuable than precious stones: no evil thing shall resist her: she is well known to all that approach her, and no precious thing is equal to her in value.	τιμιωτέρα δέ ἐστι λίθων πολυτελῶν, οὐκ ἀντιτάξεται αὐτῇ οὐδὲν πονηρόν· εὔγνωστός ἐστι πᾶσι τοῖς ἐγγίζουσιν αὐτῇ, πᾶν δὲ τίμιον οὐκ ἄξιον αὐτῆς ἐστι.

For length of existence and years of life are in her right hand; and in her left hand are wealth and glory:	μῆκος γὰρ βίου καὶ ἔτη ζωῆς ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτῆς, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀριστερᾷ αὐτῆς πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα· ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτῆς ἐκπορεύεται δικαιοσύνη, νόμον δὲ καὶ ἔλεον ἐπὶ γλώσσης φορεῖ.

out of her mouth proceeds righteousness, and she carries law and mercy upon her tongue.

Her ways are good ways, and all her paths are peaceful.	αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτῆς ὁδοὶ καλαί, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ τρίβοι αὐτῆς ἐν εἰρήνῃ·
18	18
She is a tree of life to all that lay hold upon her; and she is a secure help to all that stay themselves on her, as on the Lord.	ξύλον ζωῆς ἐστι πᾶσι τοῖς ἀντεχομένοις αὐτῆς, καὶ τοῖς ἐπερειδομένοις ἐπ᾿ αὐτὴν ὡς ἐπὶ Κύριον ἀσφαλής.

God by wisdom founded the earth, and by prudence he prepared the heavens.	ὁ Θεὸς τῇ σοφίᾳ ἐθεμελίωσε τὴν γῆν, ἡτοίμασε δὲ οὐρανοὺς φρονήσει·
20	20
By understanding were the depths broken up, and the clouds dropped water.	ἐν αἰσθήσει ἄβυσσοι ἐρράγησαν, νέφη δὲ ἐρρύησαν δρόσους.
21	21
My son, let them not pass from thee, but keep my counsel and understanding:	Υἱέ, μὴ παραρρυῇς, τήρησον δὲ ἐμὴν βουλὴν καὶ ἔννοιαν,
22	22
that thy soul may live, and that there may be grace round thy neck;	ἵνα ζήσῃ ἡ ψυχή σου, καὶ χάρις ᾖ περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ. ἔσται δὲ ἴασις ταῖς σαρξί σου καὶ ἐπιμέλεια τοῖς σοῖς ὀστέοις,

and it shall be health to thy flesh, and safety to thy bones:
23	23
that thou mayest go confidently in peace in all thy ways, and that thy foot may not stumble.	ἵνα πορεύῃ πεποιθὼς ἐν εἰρήνῃ πάσας τὰς ὁδούς σου, ὁ δὲ πούς σου οὐ μὴ προσκόψῃ·
24	24
For if thou rest, thou shalt be undismayed; and if thou sleep, thou shalt slumber sweetly.	ἐὰν γὰρ κάθῃ, ἄφοβος ἔσῃ, ἐὰν δὲ καθεύδῃς, ἡδέως ὑπνώσεις·
25	25
And thou shalt not be afraid of alarm coming upon thee, neither of approaching attacks of ungodly men.	καὶ οὐ φοβηθήσῃ πτόησιν ἐπελθοῦσαν, οὐδὲ ὁρμὰς ἀσεβῶν ἐπερχομένας·
26	26
For the Lord shall be over all thy ways, and shall establish thy foot that thou be not moved.	ὁ γὰρ Κύριος ἔσται ἐπὶ πασῶν ὁδῶν σου καὶ ἐρείσει σὸν πόδα, ἵνα μὴ σαλευθῇς.
27	27
Forbear not to do good to the poor, whensoever thy hand may have power to help him.	μὴ ἀπόσχῃ εὖ ποιεῖν ἐνδεῆ, ἡνίκα ἂν ἔχῃ ἡ χείρ σου βοηθεῖν·

Say not, Come back another time, to-morrow I will give; while thou art able to do him good: for thou knowest not what the next day will bring forth.	μὴ εἴπῃς· ἐπανελθὼν ἐπάνηκε, αὔριον δώσω, δυνατοῦ σου ὄντος εὖ ποιεῖν· οὐ γὰρ οἶδας τί τέξεται ἡ ἐπιοῦσα.

Devise not evil against thy friend, living near thee and trusting in thee.	μὴ τέκταινε ἐπὶ σὸν φίλον κακὰ παροικοῦντα καὶ πεποιθότα ἐπὶ σοί.

Be not ready to quarrel with a man without a cause, lest he do thee some harm.	μὴ φιλεχθρήσῃς πρὸς ἄνθρωπον μάτην, μήτι σε ἐργάσηται κακόν.

Procure not the reproaches of bad men, neither do thou covet their ways.	μὴ κτήσῃ κακῶν ἀνδρῶν ὀνείδη, μηδὲ ζηλώσῃς τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν·

For every transgressor is unclean before the Lord; neither does he sit among the righteous.	ἀκάθαρτος γὰρ ἔναντι Κυρίου πᾶς παράνομος, ἐν δὲ δικαίοις οὐ συνεδριάζει.
33	33
The curse of God is in the houses of the ungodly; but the habitations of the just are blessed.	κατάρα Θεοῦ ἐν οἴκοις ἀσεβῶν, ἐπαύλεις δὲ δικαίων εὐλογοῦνται.

Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.	ΑΚΟΥΣΑΤΕ, παῖδες, παιδείαν πατρὸς καὶ προσέχετε γνῶναι ἔννοιαν·

For I give you a good gift; forsake ye not my law.	δῶρον γὰρ ἀγαθὸν δωροῦμαι ὑμῖν, τὸν ἐμὸν νόμον μὴ ἐγκαταλίπητε.

For I also was a son obedient to my father, and loved in the sight of my mother:	υἱὸς γὰρ ἐγενόμην κἀγὼ πατρὶ ὑπήκοος καὶ ἀγαπώμενος ἐν προσώπῳ μητρός,

who spoke and instructed me, saying, Let our speech be fixed in thine heart, keep our commandments, forget them not:	οἳ ἐδίδασκόν με καὶ ἔλεγον· ἐρειδέτω ὁ ἡμέτερος λόγος εἰς σὴν καρδίαν· φύλασσε ἐντολάς, μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ

and do not neglect the speech of my mouth.	μηδὲ παρίδῃς ρῆσιν ἐμοῦ στόματος,

And forsake it not, and it shall cleave to thee: love it, and it shall keep thee.	μηδὲ ἐγκαταλίπῃς αὐτήν, καὶ ἀνθέξεταί σου· ἐράσθητι αὐτῆς, καὶ τηρήσει σε·

Secure it, and it shall exalt thee: honour it, that it may embrace thee;	περιχαράκωσον αὐτήν, καὶ ὑψώσει σε· τίμησον αὐτήν, ἵνα σε περιλάβῃ,

that it may give unto thy head a crown of graces, and may cover thee with a crown of delight.	ἵνα δῷ τῇ σῇ κεφαλῇ στέφανον χαρίτων, στεφάνῳ δὲ τρυφῆς ὑπερασπίσῃ σου.

Hear, my son, and receive my words; and the years of thy life shall be increased, that the resources of thy life may be many.	῎Ακουε, υἱέ, καὶ δέξαι ἐμοὺς λόγους, καὶ πληθυνθήσεται ἔτη ζωῆς σου, ἵνα σοι γένωνται πολλαὶ ὁδοὶ βίου·

For I teach thee the ways of wisdom; and I cause thee to go in right paths.	ὁδοὺς γὰρ σοφίας διδάσκω σε, ἐμβιβάζω δέ σε τροχιαῖς ὀρθαῖς.

For when thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not be distressed.	ἐὰν γὰρ πορεύῃ, οὐ συγκλεισθήσεταί σου τὰ διαβήματα, ἐὰν δὲ τρέχῃς οὐ κοπιάσεις.

Take hold of my instruction; let it not go,—but keep it for thyself for thy life.	ἐπιλαβοῦ ἐμῆς παιδείας, μὴ ἀφῇς, ἀλλὰ φύλαξον αὐτὴν σεαυτῷ εἰς ζωήν σου.

Go not in the ways of the ungodly, neither covet the ways of transgressors.	ὁδοὺς ἀσεβῶν μὴ ἐπέλθῃς, μηδὲ ζηλώσῃς ὁδοὺς παρανόμων·
15	15
In whatever place they shall pitch their camp, go not thither; but turn from them, and pass away.	ἐν ᾧ ἂν τόπῳ στρατοπεδεύσωσι, μὴ ἐπέλθῃς ἐκεῖ, ἔκκλινον δὲ ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ παράλλαξον.

For they cannot sleep, unless they have done evil: their sleep is taken away, and they rest not.	οὐ γὰρ μὴ ὑπνώσωσιν, ἐὰν μὴ κακοποιήσωσιν, ἀφῄρηται ὁ ὕπνος αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐ κοιμῶνται·

For these live upon the bread of ungodliness, and are drunken with wine of transgression.	οἵδε γὰρ σιτοῦνται σῖτα ἀσεβείας, οἴνῳ δὲ παρανόμῳ μεθύσκονται.

But the ways of the righteous shine like light; they go on and shine, until the day be fully come.	αἱ δὲ ὁδοὶ τῶν δικαίων ὁμοίως φωτὶ λάμπουσι, προπορεύονται καὶ φωτίζουσιν, ἕως κατορθώσῃ ἡ ἡμέρα·

But the ways of the ungodly are dark; they know not how they stumble.	αἱ δὲ ὁδοὶ τῶν ἀσεβῶν σκοτειναί, οὐκ οἴδασι πῶς προσκόπτουσιν.

My son, attend to my speech; and apply thine ear to my words:	Υἱέ, ἐμῇ ρήσει πρόσεχε, τοῖς δὲ ἐμοῖς λόγοις παράβαλλε σὸν οὖς,

that thy fountains may not fail thee; keep them in thine heart.	ὅπως μὴ ἐκλίπωσί σε αἱ πηγαί σου, φύλασσε αὐτὰς ἐν καρδίᾳ·

For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh.	ζωὴ γάρ ἐστι τοῖς εὑρίσκουσιν αὐτὰς καὶ πάσῃ σαρκὶ ἴασις.

Keep thine heart with the utmost care; for out of these are the issues of life.	πάσῃ φυλακῇ τήρει σὴν καρδίαν, ἐκ γὰρ τούτων ἔξοδοι ζωῆς.

Remove from thee a froward mouth, and put far away from thee unjust lips.	περίελε σεαυτοῦ σκολιὸν στόμα καὶ ἄδικα χείλη μακρὰν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἄπωσαι.

Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids assent to just things.	οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὀρθὰ βλεπέτωσαν, τὰ δὲ βλέφαρά σου νευέτω δίκαια.

Make straight paths for thy feet, and order thy ways aright.	ὀρθὰς τροχιὰς ποίει σοῖς ποσὶ καὶ τὰς ὁδούς σου κατεύθυνε.

Turn not aside to the right hand nor to the left, but turn away thy foot from an evil way:	μὴ ἐκκλίνῃς εἰς τὰ δεξιὰ μηδὲ εἰς τὰ ἀριστερά, ἀπόστρεψον δὲ σὸν πόδα ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ κακῆς· ὁδοὺς γὰρ τὰς ἐκ δεξιῶν οἶδεν ὁ Θεός, διεστραμμέναι δέ εἰσιν αἱ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν· αὐτὸς δὲ ὀρθὰς ποιήσει τὰς τροχιάς σου, τὰς δὲ πορείας σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ προάξει.

My son, attend to my wisdom, and apply thine ear to my words;	ΥΙΕ, ἐμῇ σοφίᾳ πρόσεχε, ἐμοῖς δὲ λόγοις παράβαλλε σὸν οὗς,

that thou mayest keep good understanding, and the discretion of my lips gives thee a charge. Give no heed to a worthless woman;	ἵνα φυλάξῃς ἔννοιαν ἀγαθήν· αἴσθησις δὲ ἐμῶν χειλέων ἐντέλλεταί σοι.

for honey drops from the lips of a harlot, who for a season pleases thy palate:	μὴ πρόσεχε φαύλῃ γυναικί· μέλι γὰρ ἀποστάζει ἀπὸ χειλέων γυναικὸς πόρνης, ἣ πρὸς καιρὸν λιπαίνει σὸν φάρυγγα,

but afterwards thou wilt find her more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword.	ὕστερον μέντοι πικρότερον χολῆς εὑρήσεις καὶ ἠκονημένον μᾶλλον μαχαίρας διστόμου.

For the feet of folly lead those who deal with her down to the grave with death; and her steps are not established.	τῆς γὰρ ἀφροσύνης οἱ πόδες κατάγουσι τοὺς χρωμένους αὐτῇ μετὰ θανάτου εἰς τὸν ᾅδην, τὰ δὲ ἴχνη αὐτῆς οὐκ ἐρείδεται·

For she goes not upon the paths of life; but her ways are slippery, and not easily known.	ὁδοὺς γὰρ ζωῆς οὐκ ἐπέρχεται, σφαλεραὶ δὲ αἱ τροχιαὶ αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ εὔγνωστοι.

Now then, my son, hear me, and make not my words of none effect.	νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ μὴ ἀκύρους ποιήσῃς ἐμοὺς λόγους.

Remove thy way far from her; draw not near to the doors of her house:	μακρὰν ποίησον ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς σὴν ὁδόν, μὴ ἐγγίσῃς πρὸς θύραις οἴκων αὐτῆς,

lest thou give away thy life to others, and thy substance to the merciless:	ἵνα μὴ πρόῃ ἄλλοις ζωήν σου καὶ σὸν βίον ἀνελεήμοσιν·

lest strangers be filled with thy strength, and thy labours come into the houses of strangers;	ἵνα μὴ πλησθῶσιν ἀλλότριοι σῆς ἰσχύος, οἱ δὲ σοὶ πόνοι εἰς οἴκους ἀλλοτρίων ἔλθωσι

and thou repent at last, when the flesh of thy body is consumed,	καὶ μεταμεληθήσῃ ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων, ἡνίκα ἂν κατατριβῶσι σάρκες σωματός σου,

and thou shalt say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart avoided reproofs!	καὶ ἐρεῖς· πῶς ἐμίσησα παιδείαν, καὶ ἐλέγχους ἐξέκλινεν ἡ καρδία μου;

I heard not the voice of him that instructed me, and taught me, neither did I apply mine ear.	οὐκ ἤκουον φωνὴν παιδεύοντός με καὶ διδάσκοντός με, οὐδὲ παρέβαλλον τὸ οὖς μου·

I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.	παρ᾿ ὀλίγον ἐγενόμην ἐν παντὶ κακῷ ἐν μέσῳ ἐκκλησίας καὶ συναγωγῆς.

Drink waters out of thine own vessels, and out of thine own springing wells.	πῖνε ὕδατα ἀπὸ σῶν ἀγγείων καὶ ἀπὸ σῶν φρεάτων πηγῆς.

Let not waters out of thy fountain be spilt by thee, but let thy waters go into thy streets.	μὴ ὑπερεκχείσθω σοι ὕδατα ἐκ τῆς σῆς πηγῆς, εἰς δὲ σὰς πλατείας διαπορευέσθω τὰ σὰ ὕδατα·

Let them be only thine own, and let no stranger partake with thee.	ἔστω σοι μόνῳ ὑπάρχοντα, καὶ μηδεὶς ἀλλότριος μετασχέτω σοι·

Let thy fountain of water be truly thine own; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.	ἡ πηγή σου τοῦ ὕδατος ἔστω σοι ἰδία, καὶ συνευφραίνου μετὰ γυναικὸς τῆς ἐκ νεότητός σου.

Let thy loving hart and thy graceful colt company with thee, and let her be considered thine own, and be with thee at all times; for ravished with her love thou shalt be greatly increased.	ἔλαφος φιλίας καὶ πῶλος σῶν χαρίτων ὁμιλείτω σοι· ἡ δὲ ἰδία ἡγείσθω σου καὶ συνέστω σοι ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ, ἐν γὰρ τῇ ταύτης φιλίᾳ συμπεριφερόμενος πολλοστὸς ἔσῃ.

Be not intimate with a strange woman, neither fold thyself in the arms of a woman not thine own.	μὴ πολὺς ἴσθι πρὸς ἀλλοτρίαν, μηδὲ συνέχου ἀγκάλαις τῆς μὴ ἰδίας·

For the ways of a man are before the eyes of God, and he looks on all his paths.	ἐνώπιον γάρ εἰσι τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὀφθαλμῶν ὁδοὶ ἀνδρός, εἰς δὲ πάσας τὰς τροχιὰς αὐτοῦ σκοπεύει.

Iniquities ensnare a man, and every one is bound in the chains of his own sins.	παρονομίαι ἄνδρα ἀγρεύουσι, σειραῖς δὲ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν ἕκαστος σφίγγεται·

Such a man dies with the uninstructed; and he is cast forth from the abundance of his own substance, and has perished through folly.	οὗτος τελευτᾷ μετὰ ἀπαιδεύτων, ἐκ δὲ πλήθους τῆς ἑαυτοῦ βιότητος ἐξερρίφη καὶ ἀπώλετο δι᾿ ἀφροσύνην.
Chapter 6	Κεφάλαιο 6

My son, if thou become surety for thy friend, thou shalt deliver thine hand to an enemy.	ΥΙΕ, ἐὰν ἐγγυήσῃ σὸν φίλον, παραδώσεις σὴν χεῖρα ἐχθρῷ·

For a man's own lips become a strong snare to him, and he is caught with the lips of his own mouth.	παγὶς γὰρ ἰσχυρὰ ἀνδρὶ τὰ ἴδια χείλη, καὶ ἁλίσκεται χείλεσιν ἰδίου στόματος.

My son, do what I command thee, and deliver thyself; for on thy friend's account thou art come into the power of evil men: faint not, but stir up even thy friend for whom thou art become surety.	ποίει, υἱέ, ἃ ἐγώ σοι ἐντέλλομαι, καὶ σώζου· ἥκεις γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας κακῶν διὰ σὸν φίλον. ἴσθι μὴ ἐκλυόμενος, παρόξυνε δὲ καὶ τὸν φίλον σου, ὃν ἐνεγγυήσω.

Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber with thine eyelids;	μὴ δῷς ὕπνον σοῖς ὄμμασι, μηδὲ ἐπινυστάξῃς σοῖς βλεφάροις,

that thou mayest deliver thyself as a doe out of the toils, and as a bird out of a snare.	ἵνα σώζῃ ὥσπερ δορκὰς ἐκ βρόχων καὶ ὥσπερ ὄρνεον ἐκ παγίδος.

Go to the ant, O sluggard; and see, and emulate his ways, and become wiser than he.	῎Ιθι πρὸς τὸν μύρμηκα, ὦ ὀκνηρέ, καὶ ζήλωσον ἰδὼν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ γενοῦ ἐκείνου σοφώτερος·

For whereas he has no husbandry, nor any one to compel him, and is under no master,	ἐκείνῳ γὰρ γεωργίου μὴ ὑπάρχοντος, μηδὲ τὸν ἀναγκάζοντα ἔχων, μηδὲ ὑπὸ δεσπότην ὤν,

he prepares food for himself in the summer, and lays by abundant store in harvest.	ἑτοιμάζεται θέρους τὴν τροφὴν πολλήν τε ἐν τῷ ἀμητῷ ποιεῖται τὴν παράθεσιν. 8α ἢ πορεύθητι πρὸς τὴν μέλισσαν καὶ μάθε ὡς ἐργάτις ἐστὶ τήν τε ἐργασίαν ὡς σεμνὴν ποιεῖται· 8β ἦς τοὺς πόνους βασιλεῖς καὶ ἰδιῶται πρὸς ὑγίειαν προσφέρονται· ποθεινὴ δέ ἐστι πᾶσι καὶ ἐπίδοξος· 8γ καί περ οὖσα τῇ ρώμῃ ἀσθενής, τὴν σοφίαν τιμήσασα προήχθη.

Or go to the bee, and learn how diligent she is, and how earnestly she is engaged in her work;

whose labours kings and private men use for health, and she is desired and respected by all:

though weak in body, she is advanced by honouring wisdom.

How long wilt thou lie, O sluggard? and when wilt thou awake out of sleep?	ἕως τίνος, ὀκνηρέ, κατάκεισαι; πότε δὲ ἐξ ὕπνου ἐγερθήσῃ;

Thou sleepest a little, and thou restest a little, and thou slumberest a short time, and thou foldest thine arms over thy breast a little.	ὀλίγον μὲν ὑπνοῖς, ὀλίγον δὲ κάθησαι, μικρὸν δὲ νυστάζεις, ὀλίγον δὲ ἐναγκαλίζῃ χερσὶ στήθη·

Then poverty comes upon thee as an evil traveller, and want as a swift courier:	εἶτ᾿ ἐμπαραγίνεταί σοι ὥσπερ κακὸς ὁδοιπόρος ἡ πενία καὶ ἡ ἔνδεια ὥσπερ ἀγαθὸς δρομεύς. 11α ἐὰν δὲ ἄοκνος ᾖς, ἥξει ὥσπερ πηγὴ ὁ ἀμητός σου, ἡ δὲ ἔνδεια ὥσπερ κακὸς δρομεὺς ἀπαυτομολήσει.

but if thou be diligent, thine harvest shall arrive as a fountain, and poverty shall flee away as a bad courier.

A foolish man and a transgressor goes in ways that are not good.	᾿Ανὴρ ἄφρων καὶ παράνομος πορεύεται ὁδοὺς οὐκ ἀγαθάς·

And the same winks with the eye, and makes a sign with his foot, and teaches with the beckonings of his fingers.	ὁ δ᾿ αὐτὸς ἐννεύει ὀφθαλμῷ, σημαίνει δὲ ποδί, διδάσκει δὲ ἐννεύμασι δακτύλων.

His perverse heart devises evils: at all times such a one causes troubles to a city.	διεστραμμένῃ καρδίᾳ τεκταίνεται κακά, ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ ὁ τοιοῦτος ταραχὰς συνίστησι πόλει.

Therefore his destruction shall come suddenly; overthrow and irretrievable ruin.	διὰ τοῦτο ἐξαπίνης ἔρχεται ἡ ἀπώλεια αὐτοῦ, διακοπὴ καὶ συντριβὴ ἀνίατος·

For he rejoices in all things which God hates, and he is ruined by reason of impurity of soul.	ὅτι χαίρει πᾶσιν, οἷς μισεῖ ὁ Θεός, συντρίβεται δὲ δι᾿ ἀκαθαρσίαν ψυχῆς.

The eye of the haughty, a tongue unjust, hands shedding the blood of the just;	ὀφθαλμὸς ὑβριστοῦ, γλῶσσα ἄδικος, χεῖρες ἐκχέουσαι αἷμα δικαίου

and a heart devising evil thoughts, and feet hastening to do evil,—are hateful to God.	καὶ καρδία τεκταινομένη λογισμοὺς κακοὺς καὶ πόδες ἐπισπεύδοντες κακοποιεῖν.

An unjust witness kindles falsehoods, and brings on quarrels between brethren.	ἐκκαίει ψεύδη μάρτυς ἄδικος καὶ ἐπιπέμπει κρίσεις ἀνὰ μέσον ἀδελφῶν.

My son, keep the laws of thy father, and reject not the ordinances of thy mother:	Υἱέ, φύλασσε νόμους πατρός σου καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ θεσμοὺς μητρός σου·
21	21
but bind them upon thy soul continually, and hang them as a chain about thy neck.	ἄφαψαι δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ σῇ ψυχῇ διαπαντὸς καὶ ἐγκλοίωσαι περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ.

Whensoever thou walkest, lead this along and let it be with thee; and when thou sleepest let it keep thee; that it may talk with thee when thou wakest.	ἡνίκα ἂν περιπατῇς, ἐπάγου αὐτὴν καὶ μετὰ σοῦ ἔστω· ὡς δ᾿ ἂν καθεύδῃς, φυλασσέτω σε, ἵνα ἐγειρομένῳ συλλαλῇ σοι.

For the commandment of the law is a lamp and a light; a way of life; reproof also and correction:	ὅτι λύχνος ἐντολὴ νόμου καὶ φῶς, ὁδὸς ζωῆς καὶ ἔλεγχος καὶ παιδεία

to keep thee continually from a married woman, and from the calumny of a strange tongue.	τοῦ διαφυλάσσειν σὲ ἀπὸ γυναικὸς ὑπάνδρου καὶ ἀπὸ διαβολῆς γλώσσης ἀλλοτρίας.

Let not the desire of beauty overcome thee, neither be thou caught by thine eyes, neither be captivated with her eyelids.	μή σε νικήσῃ κάλλους ἐπιθυμία, μηδὲ ἀγρευθῇς σοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς, μηδὲ συναρπασθῇς ἀπὸ τῶν αὐτῆς βλεφάρων·

For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf; and a woman hunts for the precious souls of men.	τιμὴ γὰρ πόρνης ὅση καὶ ἑνὸς ἄρτου, γυνὴ δὲ ἀνδρῶν τιμίας ψυχὰς ἀγρεύει.

Shall any one bind fire in his bosom, and not burn his garments?	ἀποδήσει τις πῦρ ἐν κόλπῳ, τὰ δὲ ἱμάτια οὐ κατακαύσει;

or will any one walk on coals of fire, and not burn his feet?	ἢ περιπατήσει τις ἐπ᾿ ἀνθράκων πυρός, τοὺς δὲ πόδας οὐ κατακαύσει;

So is he that goes in to a married woman; he shall not be held guiltless, neither any one that touches her.	οὕτως ὁ εἰσελθὼν πρὸς γυναῖκα ὕπανδρον, οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται, οὐδὲ πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος αὐτῆς.

It is not to be wondered at if one should be taken stealing, for he steals that when hungry he may satisfy his soul:	οὐ θαυμαστὸν ἐὰν ἁλῷ τις κλέπτων, κλέπτει γὰρ ἵνα ἐμπλήσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν πεινῶν·

but if he should be taken, he shall repay sevenfold, and shall deliver himself by giving all his goods.	ἐὰν δὲ ἁλῷ, ἀποτίσει ἑπταπλάσια καὶ πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ δοὺς ρύσεται ἑαυτόν.

But the adulterer through want of sense procures destruction to his soul.	ὁ δὲ μοιχὸς δι᾿ ἔνδειαν φρενῶν ἀπώλειαν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ περιποιεῖται,

He endures both pain and disgrace, and his reproach shall never be wiped off.	ὀδύνας τε καὶ ἀτιμίας ὑποφέρει, τὸ δὲ ὄνειδος αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐξαλειφθήσεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

For the soul of her husband is full of jealousy: he will not spare in the day of vengeance.	μεστὸς γὰρ ζήλου θυμὸς ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς· οὐ φείσεται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως,

He will not forego his enmity for any ransom: neither will he be reconciled for many gifts.	οὐκ ἀνταλλάξεται οὐδενὸς λύτρου τὴν ἔχθραν, οὐδὲ μὴ διαλυθῇ πολλῶν δώρων.

My son, honour the Lord, and thou shalt be strong; and fear none but him:

keep my commandments, and thou shalt live; and keep my words as the pupils of thine eyes.	φύλαξον ἐμὰς ἐντολάς, καὶ βιώσεις, τοὺς δὲ ἐμοὺς λόγους ὥσπερ κόρας ὀμμάτων·

And bind them on thy fingers, and write them on the table of thine heart.	περίθου δὲ αὐτοὺς σοῖς δακτύλοις, ἐπίγραψον δὲ ἐπὶ τὸ πλάτος τῆς καρδίας σου.

Say that wisdom is thy sister, and gain prudence as an acquaintance for thyself;	εἶπον τὴν σοφίαν σὴν ἀδελφὴν εἶναι, τὴν δὲ φρόνησιν γνώριμον περιποίησαι σεαυτῷ·
5	5
that she may keep thee from the strange and wicked woman, if she should assail thee with flattering words.	ἵνα σε τηρήσῃ ἀπὸ γυναικὸς ἀλλοτρίας καὶ πονηρᾶς, ἐάν σε λόγοις τοῖς πρὸς χάριν ἐμβάλληται.

For she looks from a window out of her house into the streets, at one whom she may see of the senseless ones, a young man void of understanding,	ἀπὸ γὰρ θυρίδος ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτῆς εἰς τὰς πλατείας παρακύπτουσα,

passing by the corner in the passages near her house,	ὃν ἂν ἴδῃ τῶν ἀφρόνων τέκνων νεανίαν ἐνδεῆ φρενῶν,

and speaking, in the dark of the evening,	παραπορευόμενον παρὰ γωνίαν ἐν διόδοις οἴκων αὐτῆς καὶ λαλοῦντα

when there happens to be the stillness of night and of darkness:	ἐν σκότει ἑσπερινῷ, ἡνίκα ἂν ἡσυχία νυκτερινὴ ᾖ καὶ γνοφώδης,

and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter.	ἡ δὲ γυνὴ συναντᾷ αὐτῷ, εἶδος ἔχουσα πορνικόν, ἣ ποιεῖ νέων ἐξίπτασθαι καρδίας.

And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home.	ἀνεπτερωμένη δέ ἐστι καὶ ἄσωτος, ἐν οἴκῳ δὲ οὐχ ἡσυχάζουσιν οἱ πόδες αὐτῆς·

For at one time she wanders without, and at another time she lies in wait in the streets, at every corner.	χρόνον γάρ τινα ἔξω ρέμβεται, χρόνον δὲ ἐν πλατείαις παρὰ πᾶσαν γωνίαν ἐνεδρεύει.

Then she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him,	εἶτα ἐπιλαβομένη ἐφίλησεν αὐτόν, ἀναιδεῖ δὲ προσώπῳ προσεῖπεν αὐτῷ·

I have a peace-offering; to-day I pay my vows:	θυσία εἰρηνική μοί ἐστι, σήμερον ἀποδίδωμι τὰς εὐχάς μου·
15	15
therefore I came forth to meet thee, desiring thy face; and I have found thee.	ἕνεκα τούτου ἐξῆλθον εἰς συνάντησίν σοι, ποθοῦσα τὸ σὸν πρόσωπον εὕρηκά σε.

I have spread my bed with sheets, and I have covered it with double tapestry from Egypt.	κειρίαις τέτακα τὴν κλίνην μου, ἀμφιτάποις δὲ ἔστρωκα τοῖς ἀπ᾿ Αἰγύπτου·

I have sprinkled my couch with saffron, and my house with cinnamon.	διέρρακα τὴν κοίτην μου κροκίνῳ, τὸν δὲ οἶκόν μου κινναμώμῳ·

Come, and let us enjoy love until the morning; come, and let us embrace in love.	ἐλθὲ καὶ ἀπολαύσωμεν φιλίας ἕως ὄρθρου, δεῦρο καὶ ἐγκυλισθῶμεν ἔρωτι·

For my husband is not at home, but is gone on a long journey,	οὐ γὰρ πάρεστιν ὁ ἀνήρ μου ἐν οἴκῳ, πεπόρευται δὲ ὁδὸν μακρὰν

having taken in his hand a bundle of money: after many days he will return to his house.	ἔνδεσμον ἀργυρίου λαβὼν ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, δι᾿ ἡμερῶν πολλῶν ἐπανήξει εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.

So with much converse she prevailed on him to go astray, and with the snares of her lips she forced him from the right path.	ἀπεπλάνησε δὲ αὐτὸν πολλῇ ὁμιλίᾳ βρόχοις τε τοῖς ἀπὸ χειλέων ἐξώκειλεν αὐτόν.

And he followed her, being gently led on, and that as an ox is led to the slaughter, and as a dog to bonds, or as a hart shot in the liver with an arrow:	ὁ δὲ ἐπηκολούθησεν αὐτῇ κεπφωθείς, ὥσπερ δὲ βοῦς ἐπὶ σφαγὴν ἄγεται καὶ ὥσπερ κύων ἐπὶ δεσμοὺς

and he hastens as a bird into a snare, not knowing that he is running for his life.	ἢ ὡς ἔλαφος τοξεύματι πεπληγὼς εἰς τὸ ἧπαρ, σπεύδει δὲ ὥσπερ ὄρνεον εἰς παγίδα, οὐκ εἰδὼς ὅτι περὶ ψυχῆς τρέχει.

Now then, my son, hearken to me, and attend to the words of my mouth.	νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ πρόσεχε ρήμασι στόματός μου·

Let not thine heart turn aside to her ways:	μὴ ἐκκλινάτω εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς ἡ καρδία σου,

for she has wounded and cast down many, and those whom she has slain are innumerable.	πολλοὺς γὰρ τρώσασα καταβέβληκε, καὶ ἀναρίθμητοί εἰσιν οὓς πεφόνευκεν·

Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death.	ὁδοὶ ᾅδου ὁ οἶκος αὐτῆς κατάγουσαι εἰς τὰ ταμιεῖα τοῦ θανάτου.
Chapter 8	Κεφάλαιο 8

Thou shalt proclaim wisdom, that understanding may be obedient to thee.	ΣΥ τὴν σοφίαν κηρύξεις, ἵνα φρόνησίς σοι ὑπακούσῃ·
2	2
For she is on lofty eminences, and stands in the midst of the ways.	ἐπὶ γὰρ τῶν ὑψηλῶν ἄκρων ἐστίν, ἀνὰ μέσον δὲ τῶν τρίβων ἕστηκε·
3	3
For she sits by the gates of princes, and sings in the entrances, saying,	παρὰ γὰρ πύλαις δυναστῶν παρεδρεύει, ἐν δὲ εἰσόδοις ὑμνεῖται.
4	4
You, O men, I exhort; and utter my voice to the sons of men.	῾Υμᾶς, ὦ ἄνθρωποι, παρακαλῶ, καὶ προΐεμαι ἐμὴν φωνὴν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων·
5	5
O ye simple, understand subtlety, and ye that are untaught, imbibe knowledge.	νοήσατε, ἄκακοι, πανουργίαν, οἱ δὲ ἀπαίδευτοι ἔνθεσθε καρδίαν.

Hearken to me; for I will speak solemn truths; and will produce right sayings from my lips.	εἰσακούσατέ μου, σεμνὰ γὰρ ἐρῶ καὶ ἀνοίσω ἀπὸ χειλέων ὀρθά·
7	7
For my throat shall meditate truth; and false lips are an abomination before me.	ὅτι ἀλήθειαν μελετήσει ὁ φάρυγξ μου, ἐβδελυγμένα δὲ ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ χείλη ψευδῆ.

All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing in them wrong or perverse.	μετὰ δικαιοσύνης πάντα τὰ ρήματα τοῦ στόματός μου, οὐδὲν ἐν αὐτοῖς σκολιὸν οὐδὲ στραγγαλιῶδες·
9	9
They are all evident to those that understand, and right to those that find knowledge.	πάντα ἐνώπια τοῖς συνιοῦσι καὶ ὀρθὰ τοῖς εὑρίσκουσι γνῶσιν.
10	10
Receive instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than tried gold.	λάβετε παιδείαν καὶ μὴ ἀργύριον, καὶ γνῶσιν ὑπὲρ χρυσίον δεδοκιμασμένον·
11	11
For wisdom is better than precious stones; and no valuable substance is of equal worth with it.	κρείσσων γὰρ σοφία λίθων πολυτελῶν, πᾶν δὲ τίμιον οὐκ ἄξιον αὐτῆς ἐστιν.

I wisdom have dwelt with counsel and knowledge, and I have called upon understanding.	ἐγὼ ἡ σοφία κατεσκήνωσα βουλήν, καὶ γνῶσιν καὶ ἔννοιαν ἐγὼ ἐπεκαλεσάμην.

The fear of the Lord hates unrighteousness, and insolence, and pride, and the ways of wicked men; and I hate the perverse ways of bad men.	φόβος Κυρίου μισεῖ ἀδικίαν, ὕβριν τε καὶ ὑπερηφανίαν καὶ ὁδοὺς πονηρῶν· μεμίσηκα δὲ ἐγὼ διεστραμμένας ὁδοὺς κακῶν.

Counsel and safety are mine: prudence is mine, and strength is mine.	ἐμὴ βουλὴ καὶ ἀσφάλεια, ἐμὴ φρόνησις, ἐμὴ δὲ ἰσχύς·
15	15
By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.	δι᾿ ἐμοῦ βασιλεῖς βασιλεύουσι καὶ οἱ δυνάσται γράφουσι δικαιοσύνην·
16	16
By me nobles become great, and monarchs by me rule over the earth.	δι᾿ ἐμοῦ μεγιστᾶνες μεγαλύνονται, καὶ τύραννοι δι᾿ ἐμοῦ κρατοῦσι γῆς.

I love those that love me; and they that seek me shall find me.	ἐγὼ τοὺς ἐμὲ φιλοῦντας ἀγαπῶ, οἱ δὲ ἐμὲ ζητοῦντες εὑρήσουσι χάριν.

Wealth and glory belong to me; yea, abundant possessions and righteousness.	πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα ἐμοὶ ὑπάρχει καὶ κτῆσις πολλῶν καὶ δικαιοσύνη.
19	19
It is better to have my fruit than to have gold and precious stones; and my produce is better than choice silver.	βέλτιον ἐμὲ καρπίζεσθαι ὑπὲρ χρυσίον καὶ λίθον τίμιον, τὰ δὲ ἐμὰ γεννήματα κρείσσω ἀργυρίου ἐκλεκτοῦ.
20	20
I walk in ways of righteousness, and am conversant with the paths of judgment;	ἐν ὁδοῖς δικαιοσύνης περιπατῶ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τρίβων δικαιοσύνης ἀναστρέφομαι,
21	21
that I may divide substance to them that love me, and may fill their treasures with good things.	ἵνα μερίσω τοῖς ἐμὲ ἀγαπῶσιν ὕπαρξιν καὶ τοὺς θησαυροὺς αὐτῶν ἐμπλήσω ἀγαθῶν. ἐὰν ἀναγγείλω ὑμῖν τὰ καθ᾿ ἡμέραν γινόμενα, μνημονεύσω τὰ ἐξ αἰῶνος ἀριθμῆσαι.

If I declare to you the things that daily happen, I will remember also to recount the things of old.

The Lord made me the beginning of his ways for his works.	Κύριος ἔκτισέ με ἀρχὴν ὁδῶν αὐτοῦ εἰς ἔργα αὐτοῦ,

He established me before time was in the beginning, before he made the earth:	πρὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐθεμελίωσέ με ἐν ἀρχῇ, πρὸ τοῦ τὴν γῆν ποιῆσαι

even before he made the depths; before the fountains of water came forth:	καὶ πρὸ τοῦ τὰς ἀβύσους ποιῆσαι, πρὸ τοῦ προελθεῖν τὰς πηγὰς τῶν ὑδάτων,

before the mountains were settled, and before all hills, he begets me.	πρὸ τοῦ ὄρη ἑδρασθῆναι, πρὸ δὲ πάντων βουνῶν γεννᾷ με.

The Lord made countries and uninhabited tracts, and the highest inhabited parts of the world.	Κύριος ἐποίησε χώρας καὶ ἀοικήτους καὶ ἄκρα οἰκούμενα τῆς ὑπ᾿ οὐρανόν.

When he prepared the heaven, I was present with him; and when he prepared his throne upon the winds:	ἡνίκα ἡτοίμαζε τὸν οὐρανόν, συμπαρήμην αὐτῷ, καὶ ὅτε ἀφώριζε τὸν ἑαυτοῦ θρόνον ἐπ᾿ ἀνέμων·

and when he strengthened the clouds above; and when he secured the fountains of the earth:	ἡνίκα ἰσχυρὰ ἐποίει τὰ ἄνω νέφη, καὶ ὡς ἀσφαλεῖς ἐτίθει πηγὰς τῆς ὑπ᾿ οὐρανὸν

and when he strengthened the foundations of the earth:	καὶ ἰσχυρὰ ἐποίει τὰ θεμέλια τῆς γῆς,

I was by him, suiting myself to him, I was that wherein he took delight; and daily I rejoiced in his presence continually.	ἤμην παρ᾿ αὐτῷ ἁρμόζουσα. ἐγὼ ἤμην ᾗ προσέχαιρε, καθ᾿ ἡμέραν δὲ εὐφραινόμην ἐν προσώπῳ αὐτοῦ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ,

For he rejoiced when he had completed the world, and rejoiced among the children of men.	ὅτε ἐνευφραίνετο τὴν οἰκουμένην συντελέσας, καὶ ἐνευφραίνετο ἐν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων.

Now then, my son, hear me: blessed is the man who shall hearken to me, and the mortal who shall keep my ways;	νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ μακάριοι, οἳ ὁδούς μου φυλάσσοντες,

watching daily at my doors, waiting at the posts of my entrances.	μακάριος ἀνήρ, ὃς εἰσακούεταί μου, καὶ ἄνθρωπος, ὃς τὰς ἐμὰς ὁδοὺς φυλάξει ἀγρυπνῶν ἐπ᾿ ἐμαῖς θύραις καθ᾿ ἡμέραν, τηρῶν σταθμοὺς ἐμῶν εἰσόδων·

For my outgoings are the outgoings of life, and in them is prepared favour from the Lord.	αἱ γὰρ ἔξοδοί μου ἔξοδοι ζωῆς, καὶ ἑτοιμάζεται θέλησις παρὰ Κυρίου.

But they that sin against me act wickedly against their own souls: and they that hate me love death.	οἱ δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες εἰς ἐμὲ ἀσεβοῦσιν εἰς τὰ ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς, καὶ οἱ μισοῦντές με ἀγαπῶσι θάνατον.
Chapter 9	Κεφάλαιο 9

1	1
Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars.	Η σοφία ᾠκοδόμησεν ἑαυτῇ οἶκον καὶ ὑπήρεισε στύλους ἑπτά·
2	2
She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table.	ἔσφαξε τὰ ἑαυτῆς θύματα, ἐκέρασεν εἰς κρατῆρα τὸν ἑαυτῆς οἶνον καὶ ἡτοιμάσατο τὴν ἑαυτῆς τράπεζαν·

She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying,	ἀπέστειλε τοὺς ἑαυτῆς δούλους συγκαλοῦσα μετὰ ὑψηλοῦ κηρύγματος ἐπὶ κρατῆρα λέγουσα·
4	4
Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that want understanding she says,	ὅς ἐστιν ἄφρων, ἐκκλινάτω πρός με· καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρενῶν εἶπεν·
5	5
Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.	ἔλθετε φάγετε τῶν ἐμῶν ἄρτων καὶ πίετε οἶνον, ὃν ἐκέρασα ὑμῖν·
6	6
Leave folly, that ye may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge.	ἀπολείπετε ἀφροσύνην, ἵνα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα βασιλεύσητε, καὶ ζητήσατε φρόνησιν, καὶ κατορθώσατε ἐν γνώσει σύνεσιν.

He that reproves evil men shall get dishonour to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly man shall disgrace himself.	῾Ο παιδεύων κακοὺς λήψεται ἑαυτῷ ἀτιμίαν· ἐλέγχων δὲ τὸν ἀσεβῆ μωμήσεται ἑαυτόν.

Rebuke not evil men, lest they should hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.	μὴ ἔλεγχε κακούς, ἵνα μὴ μισήσωσί σε· ἔλεγχε σοφόν, καὶ ἀγαπήσει σε.

Give an opportunity to a wise man, and he will be wiser: instruct a just man, and he will receive more instruction.	δίδου σοφῷ ἀφορμήν, καὶ σοφώτερος ἔσται· γνώριζε δικαίῳ, καὶ προσθήσει τοῦ δέχεσθαι.
10	10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the counsel of saints is understanding:	ἀρχὴ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου, καὶ βουλὴ ἁγίων σύνεσις, τὸ δὲ γνῶναι νόμον διανοίας ἐστὶν ἀγαθῆς·

for to know the law is the character of a sound mind.

For in this way thou shalt live long, and years of thy life shall be added to thee.	τούτῳ γὰρ τῷ τρόπῳ πολὺν ζήσεις χρόνον, καὶ προστεθήσεταί σοι ἔτη ζωῆς σου.

Son, if thou be wise for thyself, thou shalt also be wise for thy neighbours; and if thou shouldest prove wicked, thou alone wilt bear the evil.	υἱέ, ἐὰν σοφὸς γένῃ σεαυτῷ, σοφὸς ἔση καὶ τοῖς πλησίον· ἐὰν δὲ κακὸς ἀποβῇς, μόνος ἂν ἀντλήσεις κακά. ὃς ἐρείδεται ἐπὶ ψεύδεσιν, οὗτος ποιμαίνει ἀνέμους, ὁ δ᾿ αὐτὸς διώξεται ὄρνεα πετόμενα· ἀπέλιπε γὰρ ὁδοὺς τοῦ ἑαυτοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τοὺς δὲ ἄξονας τοῦ ἰδίου γεωργίου πεπλάνηται· διαπορεύεται δὲ δι᾿ ἀνύδρου ἐρήμου καὶ γῆν διατεταγμένην ἐν διψώδεσι, συνάγει δὲ χερσὶν ἀκαρπίαν.

He that stays himself upon falsehoods, attempts to rule the winds, and the same will pursue birds in their flight:

for he has forsaken the ways of his own vineyard, and he has caused the axles of his own husbandry to go astray;
12c
and he goes through a dry desert, and a land appointed to drought, and he gathers barrenness with his hands.
13	13
A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to want a morsel.	Γυνὴ ἄφρων καὶ θρασεῖα ἐνδεὴς ψωμοῦ γίνεται, ἣ οὐκ ἐπίσταται αἰσχύνην.
14	14
She sits at the doors of her house, on a seat openly in the streets,	ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ θύραις τοῦ ἑαυτῆς οἴκου, ἐπὶ δίφρου ἐμφανῶς ἐν πλατείαις,
15	15
calling to passers by, and to those that are going right on their ways;	προσκαλουμένη τοὺς παριόντας καὶ κατευθύνοντας ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν·
16	16
saying, Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that want prudence, saying,	ὅς ἐστιν ὑμῶν ἀφρονέστατος, ἐκκλινάτω πρός με καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρονήσεως παρακελεύομαι λέγουσα·

Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft.	ἄρτων κρυφίων ἡδέως ἅψασθε καὶ ὕδατος κλοπῆς γλυκεροῦ.

But he knows that mighty men die by her, and he falls in with a snare of hell.	ὁ δὲ οὐκ οἶδεν ὅτι γηγενεῖς παρ᾿ αὐτῇ ὄλλυνται, καὶ ἐπὶ πέταυρον ᾅδου συναντᾷ. 18α ἀλλὰ ἀποπήδησον, μὴ χρονίσῃς ἐν τῷ τόπῳ, μηδὲ ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτήν· 18β οὕτως γὰρ διαβήσῃ ὕδωρ ἀλλότριον καὶ ὑπερβήσῃ ποταμὸν ἀλλότριον· 18γ ἀπὸ δὲ ὕδατος ἀλλοτρίου ἀπόσχου καὶ ἀπὸ πηγῆς ἀλλοτρίας μὴ πίῃς, 18δ ἵνα πολὺν ζήσῃς χρόνον, προστεθῇ δέ σοι ἔτη ζωῆς.

But hasten away, delay not in the place, neither fix thine eye upon her:

for thus shalt thou go through strange water;
18c
but do thou abstain from strange water, and drink not of a strange fountain,
18d
that thou mayest live long, and years of life may be added to thee.
Chapter 10	Κεφάλαιο 10

1	1
A wise son makes his father glad: but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.	ΥΙΟΣ σοφὸς εὐφραίνει πατέρα, υἱὸς δὲ ἄφρων λύπη τῇ μητρί.
2	2
Treasures shall not profit the lawless: but righteousness shall deliver from death.	οὐκ ὠφελήσουσι θησαυροὶ ἀνόμους, δικαιοσύνη δὲ ρύσεται ἐκ θανάτου.
3	3
The Lord will not famish a righteous soul: but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly.	οὐ λιμοκτονήσει Κύριος ψυχὴν δικαίαν, ζωὴν δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀνατρέψει.
4	4
Poverty brings a man low: but the hands of the vigorous make rich.	πενία ἄνδρα ταπεινοῖ, χεῖρες δὲ ἀνδρείων πλουτίζουσιν. 4α υἱὸς πεπαιδευμένος σοφὸς ἔσται, τῷ δὲ ἄφρονι διακόνῳ χρήσεται.

A son who is instructed shall be wise, and shall use the fool for a servant.
5	5
A wise son is saved from heat: but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest.	διεσώθη ἀπὸ καύματος υἱὸς νοήμων, ἀνεμόφθορος δὲ γίνεται ἐν ἀμητῷ υἱὸς παράνομος.
6	6
The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.	εὐλογία Κυρίου ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν δικαίου, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καλύψει πένθος ἄωρον.

A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he that is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness.	σοφὸς καρδίᾳ δέξεται ἐντολάς, ὁ δὲ ἄστεγος χείλεσι σκολιάζων ὑποσκελισθήσεται.

He that walks simply, walks confidently; but he that perverts his ways shall be known.	ὃς πορεύεται ἁπλῶς, πορεύεται πεποιθώς, ὁ δὲ διαστρέφων τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, γνωσθήσεται.

He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker.	ὁ ἐννεύων ὀφθαλμοῖς μετὰ δόλου, συνάγει ἀνδράσι λύπας, ὁ δὲ ἐλέγχων μετὰ παρρησίας, εἰρηνοποιεῖ.

There is a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.	πηγὴ ζωῆς ἐν χειρὶ δικαίου, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβοῦς καλύψει ἀπώλεια.

Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife.	μῖσος ἐγείρει νεῖκος, πάντας δὲ τοὺς μὴ φιλονεικοῦντας καλύπτει φιλία.

He that brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod.	ὃς ἐκ χειλέων προφέρει σοφίαν, ράβδῳ τύπτει ἄνδρα ἀκάρδιον.

The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin.	σοφοὶ κρύψουσιν αἴσθησιν, στόμα δὲ προπετοῦς ἐγγίζει συντριβῇ.

The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly.	κτῆσις πλουσίων πόλις ὀχυρά, συντριβὴ δὲ ἀσεβῶν πενία.

The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly produce sins.	ἔργα δικαίων ζωὴν ποιεῖ, καρποὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἁμαρτίας.

Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray.	ὁδοὺς δικαίας ζωῆς φυλάσσει παιδεία, παιδεία δὲ ἀνεξέλεγκτος πλανᾶται.

Righteous lips cover enmity; but they that utter railings are most foolish.	καλύπτουσιν ἔχθραν χείλη δίκαια, οἱ δὲ ἐκφέροντες λοιδορίας ἀφρονέστατοί εἰσιν.

By a multitude of words thou shalt not escape sin; but if thou refrain thy lips thou wilt be prudent.	ἐκ πολυλογίας οὐκ ἐκφεύξῃ ἁμαρτίαν, φειδόμενος δὲ χειλέων νοήμων ἔσῃ.

The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail.	ἄργυρος πεπυρωμένος γλῶσσα δικαίου, καρδία δὲ ἀσεβοῦς ἐκλείψει.

The lips of the righteous know sublime truths: but the foolish die in want.	χείλη δικαίων ἐπίσταται ὑψηλά, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες ἐν ἐνδείᾳ τελευτῶσιν.

The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous; it enriches him, and grief of heart shall not be added to it.	εὐλογία Κυρίου ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν δικαίου· αὕτη πλουτίζει, καὶ οὐ μὴ προστεθῇ αὐτῇ λύπη ἐν καρδία.

A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man.	ἐν γέλωτι ἄφρων πράσσει κακά, ἡ δὲ σοφία ἀνδρὶ τίκτει φρόνησιν.

The ungodly is engulphed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable.	ἐν ἀπωλείᾳ ἀσεβὴς περιφέρεται, ἐπιθυμία δὲ δικαίου δεκτή.

When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever.	παραπορευομένης καταιγίδος ἀφανίζεται ἀσεβής, δίκαιος δὲ ἐκκλίνας σώζεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.

As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those that practise it.	ὥσπερ ὄμφαξ ὀδοῦσι βλαβερὸν καὶ καπνὸς ὄμμασιν, οὕτως παρανομία τοῖς χρωμένοις αὐτῇ.

The fear of the Lord adds length of days: but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened.	φόβος Κυρίου προστίθησιν ἡμέρας, ἔτη δὲ ἀσεβῶν ὀλιγωθήσεται.

Joy rests long with the righteous: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.	ἐγχρονίζει δικαίοις εὐφροσύνη, ἐλπὶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀπολεῖται.

The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints: but ruin comes to them that work wickedness.	ὀχύρωμα ὁσίου φόβος Κυρίου, συντριβὴ δὲ τοῖς ἐργαζομένοις κακά.

The righteous shall never fail: but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth.	δίκαιος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα οὐκ ἐνδώσει, ἀσεβεῖς δὲ οὐκ οἰκήσουσι γῆν.

The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom: but the tongue of the unjust shall perish.	στόμα δικαίου ἀποστάζει σοφίαν, γλῶσσα δὲ ἀδίκου ἐξολεῖται.

False balances are an abomination before the Lord: but a just weight is acceptable unto him.	ΖΥΓΟΙ δόλιοι βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, στάθμιον δὲ δίκαιον δεκτὸν αὐτῷ.

Wherever pride enters, there will be also disgrace: but the mouth of the lowly meditates wisdom.	οὗ ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ ὕβρις, ἐκεῖ καὶ ἀτιμία· στόμα δὲ ταπεινῶν μελετᾷ σοφίαν

When a just man dies he leaves regret: but the destruction of the ungodly is speedy, and causes joy.	ἀποθανὼν δίκαιος ἔλιπε μετάμελον, πρόχειρος δὲ γίνεται καὶ ἐπίχαρτος ἀσεβῶν ἀπώλεια.

Righteousness traces out blameless paths: but ungodliness encounters unjust dealing.	δικαιοσύνη ἀμώμους ὀρθοτομεῖ ὁδούς, ἀσέβεια δὲ περιπίπτει ἀδικίᾳ.

The righteousness of upright men delivers them: but transgressors are caught in their own destruction.	δικαιοσύνη ἀνδρῶν ὀρθῶν ρύεται αὐτούς, τῇ δὲ ἀπωλείᾳ αὐτῶν ἁλίσκονται παράνομοι.

At the death of a just man his hope does not perish: but the boast of the ungodly perishes.	τελευτήσαντος ἀνδρὸς δικαίου οὐκ ὄλλυται ἐλπίς, τὸ δὲ καύχημα τῶν ἀσεβῶν ὄλλυται.

A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place.	δίκαιος ἐκ θήρας ἐκδύνει, ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ δὲ παραδίδοται ὁ ἀσεβής.

In the mouth of ungodly men is a snare to citizens: but the understanding of righteous men is prosperous.	ἐν στόματι ἀσεβῶν παγὶς πολίταις, αἴσθησις δὲ δικαίων εὔοδος.

In the prosperity of righteous men a city prospers:	ἐν ἀγαθοῖς δικαίων κατώρθωσε πόλις,

but by the mouths of ungodly men it is overthrown.	στόμασι δὲ ἀσεβῶν κατεσκάφη.

A man void of understanding sneers at his fellow citizens: but a sensible man is quiet.	μυκτηρίζει πολίτας ἐνδεὴς φρενῶν, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος ἡσυχίαν ἄγει.

A double-tongued man discloses the secret counsels of an assembly: but he that is faithful in spirit conceals matters.	ἀνὴρ δίγλωσσος ἀποκαλύπτει βουλὰς ἐν συνεδρίῳ, πιστὸς δὲ πνοῇ κρύπτει πράγματα.

They that have no guidance fall like leaves: but in much counsel there is safety.	οἷς μὴ ὑπάρχει κυβέρνησις, πίπτουσιν ὥπερ φύλλα, σωτηρία δὲ ὑπάρχει ἐν πολλῇ βουλῇ.

A bad man does harm wherever he meets a just man: and he hates the sound of safety.	πονηρὸς κακοποιεῖ ὅταν συμμίξῃ δικαίῳ, μισεῖ δὲ ἦχον ἀσφαλείας.

A gracious wife brings glory to her husband: but a woman hating righteousness is a theme of dishonour. The slothful come to want: but the diligent support themselves with wealth.	γυνὴ εὐχάριστος ἐγείρει ἀνδρὶ δόξαν, θρόνος δὲ ἀτιμίας γυνὴ μισοῦσα δίκαια. πλούτου ὀκνηροὶ ἐνδεεῖς γίνονται, οἱ δὲ ἀνδρεῖοι ἐρείδονται πλούτῳ.

A merciful man does good to his own soul: but the merciless destroys his own body.	τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ ἀγαθὸν ποιεῖ ἀνὴρ ἐλεήμων, ἐξολλύει δὲ αὐτοῦ σῶμα ὁ ἀνελεήμων.

An ungodly man performs unrighteous works: but the seed of the righteous is a reward of truth.	ἀσεβεῖς ποιεῖ ἔργα ἄδικα, σπέρμα δὲ δικαίων μισθὸς ἀληθείας.

A righteous son is born for life: but the persecution of the ungodly ends in death.	υἱὸς δίκαιος γεννᾶται εἰς ζωήν, διωγμὸς δὲ ἀσεβοῦς εἰς θάνατον.

Perverse ways are an abomination to the Lord: but all they that are blameless in their ways are acceptable to him.	βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ διεστραμμέναι ὁδοί, προσδεκτοὶ δὲ αὐτῷ πάντες ἄμωμοι ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν.

He that unjustly strikes hands shall not be unpunished: but he that sows righteousness shall receive a faithful reward.	χειρὶ χεῖρας ἐμβαλὼν ἀδίκως οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται, ὁ δὲ σπείρων δικαιοσύνην λήψεται μισθὸν πιστόν.

As an ornament in a swine's snout, so is beauty to an ill-minded woman.	ὥσπερ ἐνώτιον ἐν ρινὶ ὑός, οὕτως γυναικὶ κακόφρονι κάλλος.

All the desire of the righteous is good: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.	ἐπιθυμία δικαίων πᾶσα ἀγαθή, ἐλπὶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀπολεῖται.

There are some who scatter their own, and make it more: and there are some also who gather, yet have less.	εἰσὶν οἳ τὰ ἴδια σπείροντες πλείονα ποιοῦσιν, εἰσὶ δὲ καὶ οἳ συνάγοντες ἐλαττονοῦνται.

Every sincere soul is blessed: but a passionate man is not graceful.	ψυχὴ εὐλογουμένη πᾶσα ἁπλῆ, ἀνὴρ δὲ θυμώδης οὐκ εὐσχήμων.

May he that hoards corn leave it to the nation: but blessing be on the head of him that gives it.	ὁ συνέχων σῖτον ὑπολείποιτο αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, εὐλογίαν δὲ εἰς κεφαλὴν τοῦ μεταδιδόντος.

He that devises good counsels seeks good favour: but as for him that seeks after evil, evil shall overtake him.	τεκταινόμενος ἀγαθὰ ζητεῖ χάριν ἀγαθήν, ἐκζητοῦντα δὲ κακά, καταλήψεται αὐτόν.

He that trusts in wealth shall fall; but he that helps righteous men shall rise.	ὁ πεποιθὼς ἐπὶ πλούτῳ οὗτος πεσεῖται, ὁ δὲ ἀντιλαμβανόμενος δικαίων οὗτος ἀνατελεῖ.

He that deals not graciously with his own house shall inherit the wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise man.	ὁ μὴ συμπεριφερόμενος τῷ ἑαυτοῦ οἴκῳ κληρονομήσει ἄνεμον, δουλεύσει δὲ ἄφρων φρονίμῳ.

Out of the fruit of righteousness grows a tree of life; but the souls of transgressors are cut off before their time.	ἐκ καρποῦ δικαιοσύνης φύεται δένδρον ζωῆς, ἀφαιροῦνται δὲ ἄωροι ψυχαὶ παρανόμων.

If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?	εἰ ὁ μὲν δίκαιος μόλις σώζεται, ὁ ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποὺ φανεῖται;
Chapter 12	Κεφάλαιο 12

He that loves instruction loves sense, but he that hates reproofs is a fool.	Ο ἀγαπῶν παιδείαν, ἀγαπᾷ αἴσθησιν, ὁ δὲ μισῶν ἐλέγχους ἄφρων.

He that has found favour with the Lord is made better; but a transgressor shall be passed over in silence.	κρείσων ὁ εὑρὼν χάριν παρὰ Κυρίῳ, ἀνὴρ δὲ παράνομος παρασιωπηθήσεται.

A man shall not prosper by wickedness; but the roots of the righteous shall not be taken up.	οὐ κατορθώσει ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ἀνόμου, αἱ δὲ ρίζαι τῶν δικαίων οὐκ ἐξαρθήσονται.

A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband; but as a worm in wood, so a bad woman destroys her husband.	γυνὴ ἀνδρεία στέφανος τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς· ὥσπερ δὲ ἐν ξύλῳ σκώληξ, οὕτως ἄνδρα ἀπόλλυσι γυνὴ κακοποιός.

The thoughts of the righteous are true judgments; but ungodly men devise deceits.	λογισμοὶ δικαίων κρίματα, κυβερνῶσι δὲ ἀσεβεῖς δόλους.

The words of ungodly men are crafty; but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.	λόγοι ἀσεβῶν δόλιοι, στόμα δὲ ὀρθῶν ρύσεται αὐτούς.

When the ungodly is overthrown, he vanishes away; but the houses of the just remain.	οὗ ἐὰν στραφῇ ὁ ἀσεβής, ἀφανίζεται, οἶκοι δὲ δικαίων παραμένουσι.

The mouth of an understanding man is praised by a man; but he that is dull of heart is had in derision.	στόμα συνετοῦ ἐγκωμιάζεται ὑπὸ ἀνδρός, νωθροκάρδιος δὲ μυκτηρίζεται.

Better is a man in dishonour serving himself, than one honouring himself and wanting bread.	κρείσσων ἀνὴρ ἐν ἀτιμίᾳ δουλεύων ἑαυτῷ ἢ τιμὴν ἑαυτῷ περιτιθεὶς καὶ προσδεόμενος ἄρτου.

A righteous man has pity for the lives of his cattle; but the bowels of the ungodly are unmerciful.	δίκαιος οἰκτείρει ψυχὰς κτηνῶν αὐτοῦ, τὰ δὲ σπλάγχνα τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀνελεήμονα.

He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread; but they that pursue vanities are void of understanding.	ὁ ἐργαζόμενος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γῆν ἐμπλησθήσεται ἄρτων, οἱ δὲ διώκοντες μάταια ἐνδεεῖς φρενῶν. 11α ὅς ἐστιν ἡδὺς ἐν οἴνων διατριβαῖς, ἐν τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ ὀχυρώμασι καταλείψει ἀτιμίαν.

He that enjoys himself in banquets of wine, shall leave dishonour in his own strong holds.

The desires of the ungodly are evil; but the roots of the godly are firmly set.	ἐπιθυμίαι ἀσεβῶν κακαί, αἱ δὲ ρίζαι τῶν εὐσεβῶν ἐν ὀχυρώμασι.

For the sin of his lips a sinner falls into snares; but a righteous man escapes from them.	δι᾿ ἁμαρτίαν χειλέων ἐμπίπτει εἰς παγίδας ἁμαρτωλός, ἐκφεύγει δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν δίκαιος. 13α ὁ βλέπων λεῖα ἐλεηθήσεται, ὁ δὲ συναντῶν ἐν πύλαις ἐκθλίψει ψυχάς.

He whose looks are gentle shall be pitied, but he that contends in the gates will afflict souls.

The soul of a man shall be filled with good from the fruits of his mouth; and the recompence of his lips shall be given to him.	ἀπὸ καρπῶν στόματος ψυχὴ ἀνδρὸς πλησθήσεται ἀγαθῶν, ἀνταπόδομα δὲ χειλέων αὐτοῦ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ.

The ways of fools are right in their own eyes; but a wise man hearkens to counsels.	ὁδοὶ ἀφρόνων ὀρθαὶ ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, εἰσακούει δὲ συμβουλίας σοφός.

A fool declares his wrath the same day; but a prudent man hides his own disgrace.	ἄφρων αὐθημερὸν ἐξαγγέλλει ὀργὴν αὐτοῦ, κρύπτει δὲ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀτιμίαν ἀνὴρ πανοῦργος.

A righteous man declares the open truth; but an unjust witness is deceitful.	ἐπιδεικνυμένην πίστιν ἀπαγγέλλει δίκαιος, ὁ δὲ μάρτυς τῶν ἀδίκων δόλιος.

Some wound as they speak, like swords; but the tongues of the wise heal.	εἰσὶν οἳ λέγοντες τιτρώσκουσι μαχαίρᾳ, γλῶσσαι δὲ σοφῶν ἰῶνται.

True lips establish testimony; but a hasty witness has an unjust tongue.	χείλη ἀληθινὰ κατορθοῖ μαρτυρίαν, μάρτυς δὲ ταχὺς γλῶσσαν ἔχει ἄδικον.

There is deceit in the heart of him that imagines evil; but they that love peace shall rejoice.	δόλος ἐν καρδίᾳ τεκταινομένου κακά, οἱ δὲ βουλόμενοι εἰρήνην εὐφρανθήσονται.

No injustice will please a just man; but the ungodly will be filled with mischief.	οὐκ ἀρέσει τῷ δικαίῳ οὐδὲν ἄδικον, οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς πλησθήσονται κακῶν.

The hand of chosen men shall easily obtain rule; but the deceitful shall be for a prey.	χεὶρ ἐκλεκτῶν κρατήσει εὐχερῶς, δόλιοι δὲ ἔσονται ἐν προνομῇ.

A terrible word troubles the heart of a righteous man; but a good message rejoices him.	φοβερὸς λόγος καρδίαν ταράσσει ἀνδρὸς δικαίου, ἀγγελία δὲ ἀγαθὴ εὐφραίνει αὐτόν.

A just arbitrator shall be his own friend; but mischief shall pursue sinners; and the way of ungodly men shall lead them astray.	ἐπιγνώμων δίκαιος ἑαυτοῦ φίλος ἔσται, αἱ δὲ γνῶμαι τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀνεπιεικεῖς. ἁμαρτάνοντας καταδιώξεται κακὰ ἡ δὲ ὁδὸς τῶν ἀσεβῶν πλανήσει αὐτούς.

A deceitful man shall catch no game; but a blameless man is a precious possession.	οὐκ ἐπιτεύξεται δόλιος θήρας, κτῆμα δὲ τίμιον ἀνὴρ καθαρός.

Chapter 13	Κεφάλαιο 13

A wise son is obedient to his father: but a disobedient son will be destroyed.	ΥΙΟΣ πανοῦργος ὑπήκοος πατρί, υἱὸς δὲ ἀνήκοος ἐν ἀπωλείᾳ.

A good man shall eat of the fruits of righteousness: but the lives of transgressors shall perish before their time.	ἀπὸ καρπῶν δικαιοσύνης φάγεται ἀγαθός, ψυχαὶ δὲ παρανόμων ὀλοῦνται ἄωροι.

He that keeps his own mouth keeps his own life: but he that is hasty with his lips shall bring terror upon himself.	ὃς φυλάσσει τὸ ἑαυτοῦ στόμα, τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν, ὁ δὲ προπετὴς χείλεσι πτοήσει ἑαυτόν.

Every slothful man desires, but the hands of the active are diligent.	ἐν ἐπιθυμίαις ἐστὶ πᾶς ἀεργός, χεῖρες δὲ ἀνδρείων ἐν ἐπιμελείᾳ.

A righteous man hates an unjust word: but an ungodly man is ashamed, and will have no confidence.	λόγον ἄδικον μισεῖ δίκαιος, ἀσεβὴς δὲ αἰσχύνεται καὶ οὐχ ἕξει παρρησίαν.

There are some who, having nothing, enrich themselves: and there are some who bring themselves down in the midst of much wealth.	εἰσὶν οἱ πλουτίζοντες ἑαυτοὺς μηδὲν ἔχοντες, καί εἰσιν οἱ ταπεινοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐν πολλῷ πλούτῳ.

A man's own wealth is the ransom of his life: but the poor endures not threatening.	λύτρον ἀνδρὸς ψυχῆς ὁ ἴδιος πλοῦτος, πτωχὸς δὲ οὐχ ὑφίσταται ἀπειλήν.

The righteous always have light: but the light of the ungodly is quenched.	φῶς δικαίοις διαπαντός, φῶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν σβέννυται. 9α ψυχαὶ δόλιαι πλανῶνται ἐν ἁμαρτίαις, δίκαιοι δὲ οἰκτείρουσι καὶ ἐλεοῦσι.

Crafty souls go astray in sins: but just men pity, and are merciful.

A bad man does evil with insolence: but they that are judges of themselves are wise.	κακὸς μεθ᾿ ὕβρεως πράσσει κακά, οἱ δὲ ἑαυτῶν ἐπιγνώμονες σοφοί.

The houses of ungodly men shall be utterly destroyed; but the tabernacles of them that walk uprightly shall stand.	οἰκίαι ἀσεβῶν ἀφανισθήσονται, σκηναὶ δὲ κατορθούντων στήσονται.

There is a way which seems to be right with men, but the ends of it reach to the depth of hell.	ἔστιν ὁδός, ἣ δοκεῖ παρὰ ἀνθρώποις ὀρθὴ εἶναι, τὰ δὲ τελευταῖα αὐτῆς ἔρχεται εἰς πυθμένα ᾄδου.

A wise man fears, and departs from evil; but the fool trusts in himself, and joins himself with the transgressor.	σοφὸς φοβηθεὶς ἐξέκλινεν ἀπὸ κακοῦ, ὁ δὲ ἄφρων ἑαυτῷ πεποιθὼς μίγνυται ἀνόμῳ.

A passionate man acts inconsiderately; but a sensible man bears up under many things.	ὀξύθυμος πράσσει μετὰ ἀβουλίας, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος πολλὰ ὑποφέρει.

Fools shall have mischief for their portion; but the prudent shall take fast hold of understanding.	μεριοῦνται ἄφρονες κακίαν, οἱ δὲ πανοῦργοι κρατήσουσιν αἰσθήσεως.

Evil men shall fall before the good; and the ungodly shall attend at the gates of the righteous.	ὀλισθήσουσι κακοὶ ἔναντι ἀγαθῶν, καὶ ἀσεβεῖς θεραπεύσουσι θύρας δικαίων.

Friends will hate poor friends; but the friends of the rich are many.	φίλοι μισήσουσι φίλους πτωχούς, φίλοι δὲ πλουσίων πολλοί.

He that dishonours the needy sins: but he that has pity on the poor is most blessed.	ὁ ἀτιμάζων πένητας ἁμαρτάνει, ἐλεῶν δὲ πτωχοὺς μακαριστός.

They that go astray devise evils: but the good devise mercy and truth. The framers of evil do not understand mercy and truth: but compassion and faithfulness are with the framers of good.	πλανώμενοι τεκταίνουσι κακά, ἔλεον δὲ καὶ ἀλήθειαν τεκταίνουσιν ἀγαθοί. οὐκ ἐπίστανται ἔλεον καὶ πίστιν τέκτονες κακῶν, ἐλεημοσύναι δὲ καὶ πίστεις παρὰ τέκτοσιν ἀγαθοῖς.

When the heart rejoices the countenance is cheerful; but when it is in sorrow, the countenance is sad.	καρδίας εὐφραινομένης πρόσωπον θάλλει, ἐν δὲ λύπαις οὔσης σκυθρωπάζει.

An upright heart seeks discretion; but the mouth of the uninstructed will experience evils.	καρδία ὀρθὴ ζητεῖ αἴσθησιν, στόμα δὲ ἀπαιδεύτων γνώσεται κακά.

The paths of life turn aside from evil; and the ways of righteousness are length of life. He that receives instruction shall be in prosperity; and he that regards reproofs shall be made wise. A bad man hearkens to the tongue of transgressors: but a righteous man attends not to false lips.	κακὸς ὑπακούει γλώσσης παρανόμων, δίκαιος δὲ οὐ προσέχει χείλεσι ψευδέσιν.

Care may befall a man of understanding; but fools will meditate evils.	ἐμπεσεῖται μέριμνα ἀνδρὶ νοήμονι, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες διαλογιοῦνται κακά.

Whoso rewards evil for good, evil shall not be removed from his house.	ὃς ἀποδίδωσι κακὰ ἀντὶ ἀγαθῶν, οὐ κινηθήσεται κακὰ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ.

Rightful rule gives power to words; but sedition and strife precede poverty.	ἐξουσίαν δίδωσι λόγοις ἀρχὴ δικαιοσύνης, προηγεῖται δὲ τῆς ἐνδείας στάσις καὶ μάχη.

He that pronounces the unjust just, and the just unjust, is unclean and abominable with God.	ὃς δίκαιον κρίνει τὸν ἄδικον, ἄδικον δὲ τὸν δίκαιον, ἀκάθαρτος καὶ βδελυκτὸς παρὰ Θεῷ.

A man who wishes to separate from friends seeks excuses; but at all times he will be liable to reproach.	Προφάσεις ζητεῖ ἀνὴρ βουλόμενος χωρίζεσθαι ἀπὸ φίλων, ἐν παντὶ δὲ καιρῷ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται.

A senseless man feels no need of wisdom, for he is rather led by folly.	οὐ χρείαν ἔχει σοφίας ἐνδεὴς φρενῶν, μᾶλλον γὰρ ἄγεται ἀφροσύνῃ.

When an ungodly man comes into a depth of evils, he despises them; but dishonour and reproach come upon him.	ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἀσεβὴς εἰς βάθος κακῶν, καταφρονεῖ, επέρχεται δὲ αὐτῷ ἀτιμία καὶ ὄνειδος.

A word in the heart of a man is a deep water, and a river and fountain of life spring forth.	ὕδωρ βαθὺ λόγος ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός, ποταμὸς δὲ ἀναπηδύει καὶ πηγὴ ζωῆς.

It is not good to accept the person of the ungodly, nor is it holy to pervert justice in judgment.	θαυμάσαι πρόσωπον ἀσεβοῦς οὐ καλόν, οὐδὲ ὅσιον ἐκκλίνειν τὸ δίκαιον ἐν κρίσει.

The lips of a fool bring him into troubles, and his bold mouth calls for death.	χείλη ἄφρονος ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν εἰς κακά, τὸ δὲ στόμα αὐτοῦ τὸ θρασὺ θάνατον ἐπικαλεῖται.

A fool's mouth is ruin to him, and his lips are a snare to his soul.	στόμα ἄφρονος συντριβὴ αὐτῷ, τὰ δὲ χείλη αὐτοῦ παγὶς τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ.

Fear casts down the slothful; and the souls of the effeminate shall hunger.	ὀκνηροὺς καταβάλλει φόβος, ψυχαὶ δὲ ἀνδρογύνων πεινάσουσιν.

A man who helps not himself by his labour is brother of him that ruins himself.	ὁ μὴ ἰώμενος ἑαυτὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὑτοῦ ἀδελφός ἐστι τοῦ λυμαινομένου ἑαυτόν.

The name of the Lord is of great strength; and the righteous running to it are exalted.	ἐκ μεγαλωσύνης ἰσχύος ὄνομα Κυρίου, αὐτῷ δὲ προσδραμόντες δίκαιοι ὑψοῦνται.

The wealth of a rich man is a strong city; and its glory casts a broad shadow.	ὕπαρξις πλουσίου ἀνδρὸς πόλις ὀχυρά, ἡ δὲ δόξα αὐτῆς μέγα ἐπισκιάζει.

Before ruin a man's heart is exalted, and before honour it is humble.	πρὸ συντριβῆς ὑψοῦται καρδία ἀνδρός, καὶ πρὸ δόξης ταπεινοῦται.

Whoso answers a word before he hears a cause, it is folly and reproach to him.	ὃς ἀποκρίνεται λόγον πρὶν ἀκοῦσαι, ἀφροσύνη αὐτῷ ἐστι καὶ ὄνειδος.

A wise servant calms a man's anger; but who can endure a faint-hearted man?	θυμὸν ἀνδρὸς πραΰνει θεράπων φρόνιμος, ὀλιγόψυχον δὲ ἄνδρα τίς ὑποίσει;

The heart of the sensible man purchases discretion; and the ears of the wise seek understanding.	καρδία φρονίμου κτᾶται αἴσθησιν, ὦτα δὲ σοφῶν ζητεῖ ἔννοιαν.

A man's gift enlarges him, and seats him among princes.	δόμα ἀνθρώπου ἐμπλατύνει αὐτὸν καὶ παρὰ δυνάσταις καθιζάνει αὐτόν.

A righteous man accuses himself at the beginning of his speech, but when he has entered upon the attack, the adversary is reproved.	δίκαιος ἑαυτοῦ κατήγορος ἐν πρωτολογίᾳ, ὡς δ’ ἂν ἐπιβάλῃ ὁ ἀντίδικος ἐλέγχεται.

A silent man quells strifes, and determines between great powers.	ἀντιλογίας παύει σιγηρός, ἐν δὲ δυναστείαις ὁρίζει.

A brother helped by a brother is as a strong and high city; and is as strong as a well-founded palace.	ἀδελφὸς ὑπὸ ἀδελφοῦ βοηθούμενος ὡς πόλις ὀχυρὰ καὶ ὑψηλή, ἰσχύει δὲ ὥσπερ τεθεμελιωμένον βασίλειον.

A man fills his belly with the fruits of his mouth; and he shall be satisfied with the fruits of his lips.	ἀπὸ καρπῶν στόματος ἀνὴρ πίμπλησι κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ, ἀπὸ δὲ καρπῶν χειλέων αὐτοῦ ἐμπλησθήσεται.

The folly of a man spoils his ways: and he blames God in his heart.

Many court the favour of kings; but every bad man becomes a reproach to another man.	πολλοὶ θεραπεύουσι πρόσωπα βασιλέων, πᾶς δὲ ὁ κακὸς γίνεται ὄνειδος ἀνδρί.

Every one who hates his poor brother shall also be far from friendship. Good understanding will draw near to them that know it, and a sensible man will find it. A foolish son is a disgrace to his father: vows paid out of the hire of a harlot are not pure.	αἰσχύνη πατρὶ υἱὸς ἄφρων· οὐχ ἁγναὶ εὐχαὶ ἀπὸ μισθώματος ἑταίρας.

Fathers divide house and substance to their children: but a wife is suited to a man by the Lord.	οἶκον καὶ ὕπαρξιν μερίζουσι πατέρες παισί, παρὰ δὲ Κυρίου ἁρμόζεται γυνὴ ἀνδρί.

Cowardice possesses the effeminate man; and the soul of the sluggard shall hunger.	δειλία κατέχει ἀνδρόγυνον, ψυχὴ δὲ ἀεργοῦ πεινάσει.

He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall perish.	ὃς φυλάσσει ἐντολήν, τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν, ὁ δὲ καταφρονῶν τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν ἀπολεῖται.

He that has pity on the poor lends to the Lord; and he will recompense to him according to his gift.	δανείζει Θεῷ ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχόν, κατὰ δὲ τὸ δόμα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ.

Chasten thy son, for so he shall be hopeful; and be not exalted in thy soul to haughtiness.	παίδευε υἱόν σου, οὕτως γὰρ ἔσται εὔελπις, εἰς δὲ ὕβριν μὴ ἐπαίρου τῇ ψυχῇ σου.

A malicious man shall be severely punished, and if he commit injury, he shall also lose his life.	κακόφρων ἀνὴρ πολλὰ ζημιωθήσεται· ἐὰν δὲ λοιμεύηται, καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ προσθήσει.

Hear, son, the instruction of thy father, that thou mayest be wise at thy latter end.	ἄκουε, υἱέ, παιδείαν πατρός σου, ἵνα σοφὸς γένῃ ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων σου.

There are many thoughts in a man's heart; but the counsel of the Lord abides for ever.	πολλοὶ λογισμοὶ ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός, ἡ δὲ βουλὴ τοῦ Κυρίου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα μένει.

Mercy is a fruit to a man: and a poor man is better than a rich liar.	καρπὸς ἀνδρὶ ἐλεημοσύνη, κρείσσων δὲ πτωχὸς δίκαιος ἢ πλούσιος ψεύστης.

The fear of the Lord is life to a man: and he shall lodge without fear in places where knowledge is not seen.	φόβος Κυρίου εἰς ζωὴν ἀνδρί, ὁ δὲ ἄφοβος αὐλισθήσεται ἐν τόποις, οὗ οὐκ ἐπισκοπεῖται γνῶσις.

He that unjustly hides his hands in his bosom, will not even bring them up to his mouth.	ὁ ἐγκρύπτων εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτοῦ χεῖρας ἀδίκως, οὐδὲ τῷ στόματι οὐ μὴ προσαγάγῃ αὐτάς.

When a pestilent character is scourged, a simple man is made wiser: and if thou reprove a wise man, he will understand discretion.	λοιμοῦ μαστιγουμένου, ἄφρων πανουργότερος γίνεται· ἐὰν δὲ ἐλέγχῃς ἄνδρα φρόνιμον, νοήσει αἴσθησιν.

He that dishonours his father, and drives away his mother, shall be disgraced and shall be exposed to reproach.	ὁ ἀτιμάζων πατέρα καὶ ἀπωθούμενος μητέρα αὐτοῦ καταισχυνθήσεται καὶ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται.

A son who ceases to attend to the instruction of a father will cherish evil designs.	υἱὸς ἀπολειπόμενος φυλάξαι παιδείαν πατρὸς μελετήσει ρήσεις κακάς.

He that becomes surety for a foolish child will despise the ordinance: and the mouth of ungodly men shall drink down judgments.	ὁ ἐγγυώμενος παῖδα ἄφρονα καθυβρίσει δικαίωμα, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καταπίεται κρίσεις.

Scourges are preparing for the intemperate, and punishments likewise for fools.	ἑτοιμάζονται ἀκολάστοις μάστιγες, καὶ τιμωρίαι ὁμοίως ἄφροσιν.
Chapter 20	Κεφάλαιο 20

Wine is an intemperate thing, and strong drink full of violence: but every fool is entangled with them.	ΑΚΟΛΑΣΤΟΝ οἶνος καὶ ὑβριστικὸν μέθη, πᾶς δὲ ἄφρων τοιούτοις συμπλέκεται.

The threat of a king differs not from the rage of a lion; and he that provokes him sins against his own soul.	οὐ διαφέρει ἀπειλὴ βασιλέως θυμοῦ λέοντος, ὁ δὲ παροξύνων αὐτὸν ἁμαρτάνει εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν.

It is a glory to a man to turn aside from railing; but every fool is entangled with such matters.	δόξα ἀνδρὶ ἀποστρέφεσθαι λοιδορίας, πᾶς δὲ ἄφρων τοιούτοις συμπλέκεται.

A sluggard when reproached is not ashamed: so also he who borrows corn in harvest.	ὀνειδιζόμενος ὀκνηρὸς οὐκ αἰσχύνεται, ὡσαύτως καὶ ὁ δανειζόμενος σῖτον ἐν ἀμήτῳ.

Counsel in a man's heart is deep water; but a prudent man will draw it out.	ὕδωρ βαθὺ βουλὴ ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος ἐξαντλήσει αὐτήν.

A man is valuable, and a merciful man precious: but it is hard to find a faithful man.	μέγα ἄνθρωπος καὶ τίμιον ἀνὴρ ἐλεήμων, ἄνδρα δὲ πιστὸν ἔργον εὑρεῖν.

He that walks blameless in justice, shall leave his children blessed.	ὃς ἀναστρέφεται ἄμωμος ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ, μακαρίους τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ καταλείψει.

Whenever a righteous king sits on the throne, no evil thing can stand before his presence.	ὅταν βασιλεὺς δίκαιος καθίσῃ ἐπὶ θρόνου, οὐκ ἐναντιοῦται ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ πᾶν πονηρόν.

Who will boast that he has a pure heart? or who will boldly say that he is pure from sins?	τίς καυχήσεται ἁγνὴν ἔχειν τὴν καρδίαν; ἢ τίς παρρησιάσεται καθαρὸς εἶναι ἀπὸ ἁμαρτιῶν;

The lamp of him that reviles father or mother shall be put out, and his eyeballs shall see darkness.

A portion hastily gotten at first shall not be blessed in the end.

Say not, I will avenge myself on my enemy; but wait on the Lord, that he may help thee.

A large and small weight, and divers measures, are even both of them unclean before the Lord; and so is he that makes them.	στάθμιον μέγα καὶ μικρὸν καὶ μέτρα δισσά, ἀκάθαρτα ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ἀμφότερα καὶ ὁ ποιῶν αὐτά.

A youth when in company with a godly man, will be restrained in his devices, and then his way will be straight.	ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν αὐτοῦ συμποδισθήσεται νεανίσκος μετὰ ὁσίου, καὶ εὐθεῖα ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτοῦ.

The ear hears, and the eye sees: even both of them are the Lord's work.	οὖς ἀκούει καὶ ὀφθαλμὸς ὁρᾷ· Κυρίου ἔργα καὶ ἀμφότερα.

Love not to speak ill, lest thou be cut off: open thine eyes, and be filled with bread.	μὴ ἀγάπα καταλαλεῖν, ἵνα μὴ ἐξαρθῇς· διάνοιξον τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου καὶ ἐμπλήσθητι ἄρτων.

A double weight is an abomination to the Lord; and a deceitful balance is not good in his sight.	βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ δισσὸν στάθμιον, καὶ ζυγὸς δόλιος οὐ καλὸν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ.

A man's goings are directed of the Lord: how then can a mortal understand his ways?	παρὰ Κυρίου εὐθύνεται τὰ διαβήματα ἀνδρί, θνητὸς δὲ πῶς ἂν νοήσαι τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ;
25	25
It is a snare to a man hastily to consecrate some of his own property: for in that case repentance comes after vowing.	παγὶς ἀνδρὶ ταχύ τι τῶν ἰδίων ἁγιάσαι, μετὰ γὰρ τὸ εὔξασθαι μετανοεῖν γίνεται.

A wise king utterly crushes the ungodly, and will bring a wheel upon them.	λικμήτωρ ἀσεβῶν βασιλεὺς σοφός, καὶ ἐπιβαλεῖ αὐτοῖς τροχόν.

The spirit of man is a light of the Lord, who searches the inmost parts of the belly.	φῶς Κυρίου πνοὴ ἀνθρώπων, ὃς ἐρευνᾷ ταμιεῖα κοιλίας.

Mercy and truth are a guard to a king, and will surround his throne with righteousness.	ἐλεημοσύνη καὶ ἀλήθεια φυλακὴ βασιλεῖ, καὶ περικυκλώσουσιν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ.

Wisdom is an ornament to young men; and grey hairs are the glory of old men.	κόσμος νεανίαις σοφία, δόξα δὲ πρεσβυτέρων πολιαί.

Bruises and contusions befall bad men; and plagues shall come into the inward parts of their belly.	ὑπώπια καὶ συντρίμματα συναντᾷ κακοῖς, πληγαὶ δὲ εἰς ταμιεῖα κοιλίας.
Chapter 21	Κεφάλαιο 21

As a rush of water, so is the king's heart in God's hand: he turns it whithersoever he may desire to point out.	ΩΣΠΕΡ ὁρμὴ ὕδατος, οὕτως καρδία βασιλέως ἐν χειρὶ Θεοῦ· οὗ ἐὰν θέλων νεύσῃ, ἐκεῖ ἔκλινεν αὐτήν.

Every man seems to himself righteous; but the Lord directs the hearts.	πᾶς ἀνὴρ φαίνεται ἑαυτῷ δίκαιος, κατευθύνει δὲ καρδίας Κύριος.

To do justly and to speak truth, are more pleasing to God than the blood of sacrifices.	ποιεῖν δίκαια καὶ ἀληθεύειν ἀρεστὰ παρὰ Θεῷ μᾶλλον ἢ θυσιῶν αἷμα.

A high-minded man is stout-hearted in his pride; and the lamp of the wicked is sin.	μεγαλόφρων ἐν ὕβρει θρασυκάρδιος, λαμπτὴρ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἁμαρτία.

He that gathers treasures with a lying tongue pursues vanity on to the snares of death.	ὁ ἐνεργῶν θησαυρίσματα γλώσσῃ ψευδεῖ μάταια διώκει καὶ ἔρχεται ἐπὶ παγίδας θανάτου.

Destruction shall lodge with the ungodly; for they refuse to do justly.	ὄλεθρος ἀσεβέσιν ἐπιξενωθήσεται, οὐ γὰρ βούλονται πράσσειν τὰ δίκαια.
8	8
To the froward God sends froward ways; for his works are pure and right.	πρὸς τοὺς σκολιοὺς σκολιὰς ὁδοὺς ἀποστέλλει ὁ Θεός, ἁγνὰ γὰρ καὶ ὀρθὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ. 9κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐπὶ γωνίας ὑπαίθρου ἢ ἐν κεκονιαμένοις μετὰ ἀδικίας καὶ ἐν οἴκῳ κοινῷ.

It is better to dwell in a corner on the house-top, than in plastered rooms with unrighteousness, and in an open house.

The soul of the ungodly shall not be pitied by any man.	ψυχὴ ἀσεβοῦς οὐκ ἐλεηθήσεται ὑπ᾿ οὐδενὸς τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
11	11
When an intemperate man is punished the simple becomes wiser: and a wise man understanding will receive knowledge.	ζημιουμένου ἀκολάστου πανουργότερος γίνεται ὁ ἄκακος, συνίων δὲ σοφὸς δέξεται γνῶσιν.
12	12
A righteous man understands the hearts of the ungodly: and despises the ungodly for their wickedness.	συνίει δίκαιος καρδίας ἀσεβῶν καὶ φαυλίζει ἀσεβεῖς ἐν κακοῖς.
13	13
He that stops his ears from hearing the poor, himself also shall cry, and there shall be none to hear him.	ὃς φράσσει τὰ ὧτα αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ ἐπακοῦσαι ἀσθενοῦς, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπικαλέσεται, καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ εἰσακούων.

A secret gift calms anger: but he that forbears to give stirs up strong wrath.	δόσις λάθριος ἀνατρέπει ὀργάς, δώρων δὲ ὁ φειδόμενος θυμὸν ἐγείρει ἰσχυρόν.

It is the joy of the righteous to do judgment: but a holy man is abominable with evil-doers.	εὐφροσύνη δικαίων ποιεῖν κρίμα, ὅσιος δὲ ἀκάθαρτος παρὰ κακούργοις.

A man that wanders out of the way of righteousness, shall rest in the congregation of giants.	ἀνὴρ πλανώμενος ἐξ ὁδοῦ δικαιοσύνης ἐν συναγωγῇ γιγάντων ἀναπαύσεται.
17	17
A poor man loves mirth, loving wine and oil in abundance;	ἀνὴρ ἐνδεὴς ἀγαπᾷ εὐφροσύνην, φιλῶν οἶνον καὶ ἔλαιον εἰς πλοῦτον·
18	18
and a transgressor is the abomination of a righteous man.	περικάθαρμα δὲ δικαίου ἄνομος.
19	19
It is better to dwell in a wilderness than with a quarrelsome and talkative and passionate woman.	κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐν γῇ ἐρήμῳ ἢ μετὰ γυναικὸς μαχίμου καὶ γλωσσώδους καὶ ὀργίλου.
20	20
A desirable treasure will rest on the mouth of the wise; but foolish men will swallow it up.	θησαυρὸς ἐπιθυμητὸς ἀναπαύσεται ἐπὶ στόματος σοφοῦ, ἄφρονες δὲ ἄνδρες καταπίονται αὐτόν.
21	21
The way of righteousness and mercy will find life and glory.	ὁδὸς δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἐλεημοσύνης εὑρήσει ζωὴν καὶ δόξαν.
22	22
A wise man assaults strong cities, and demolishes the fortress in which the ungodly trusted.	πόλεις ὀχυρὰς ἐπέβη σοφὸς καὶ καθεῖλε τὸ ὀχύρωμα, ἐφ᾿ ᾧ ἐπεποίθεισαν οἱ ἀσεβεῖς.

He that keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble.	ὃς φυλάσσει τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν γλῶσσαν, διατηρεῖ ἐκ θλίψεως τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ.
24	24
A bold and self-willed and insolent man is called a pest: and he that remembers injuries is a transgressor.	θρασὺς καὶ αὐθάδης καὶ ἀλαζὼν λοιμὸς καλεῖται, ὃς δὲ μνησικακεῖ, παράνομος.
25	25
Desires kill the sluggard; for his hands do not choose to do anything.	ἐπιθυμίαι ὀκνηρὸν ἀποκτείνουσιν, οὐ γὰρ προαιροῦνται αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν τι.
26	26
An ungodly man entertains evil desires all the day: but the righteous is unsparingly merciful and compassionate.	ἀσεβὴς ἐπιθυμεῖ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐπιθυμίας κακάς, ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐλεᾷ καὶ οἰκτείρει ἀφειδῶς.

The sacrifices of the ungodly are abomination to the Lord, for they offer them wickedly.	θυσίαι ἀσεβῶν βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ, καὶ γὰρ παρανόμως προσφέρουσιν αὐτάς.

A false witness shall perish; but an obedient man will speak cautiously.	μάρτυς ψευδὴς ἀπολεῖται, ἀνὴρ δὲ ὑπήκοος φυλασσόμενος λαλήσει.

An ungodly man impudently withstands with his face; but the upright man himself understands his ways.	ἀσεβὴς ἀνὴρ ἀναιδῶς ὑφίσταται προσώπῳ, ὁ δὲ εὐθὴς αὐτὸς συνίει τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ.

There is no wisdom, there is no courage, there is no counsel against the ungodly.	οὐκ ἔστι σοφία, οὐκ ἔστιν ἀνδρεία, οὐκ ἔστι βουλὴ πρὸς τὸν ἀσεβῆ.

A horse is prepared for the day of battle; but help is of the Lord.	ἵππος ἑτοιμάζεται εἰς ἡμέραν πολέμου, παρὰ δὲ Κυρίου ἡ βοήθεια.
Chapter 22	Κεφάλαιο 22

1	1
A fair name is better than much wealth, and good favour is above silver and gold.	ΑΙΡΕΤΩΤΕΡΟΝ ὄνομα καλὸν ἢ πλοῦτος πολύς, ὑπὲρ δὲ ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον χάρις ἀγαθή,

The rich and the poor meet together; but the Lord made them both.	πλούσιος καὶ πτωχὸς συνήντησαν ἀλλήλοις, ἀμφοτέρους δὲ ὁ Κύριος ἐποίησε.

An intelligent man seeing a bad man severely punished is himself instructed, but fools pass by and are punished.	πανοῦργος ἱδὼν πονηρὸν τιμωρούμενον κραταιῶς αὐτὸς παιδεύεται, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες παρελθόντες ἐζημιώθησαν.

The fear of the Lord is the offspring of wisdom, and wealth, and glory, and life.	γενεὰ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου καὶ πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα καὶ ζωή.

Thistles and snares are in perverse ways; but he that keeps his soul will refrain from them.	τρίβολοι καὶ παγίδες ἐν ὁδοῖς σκολιαῖς, ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχὴν ἀφέξεται αὐτῶν.

The rich will rule over the poor, and servants will lend to their own masters.	πλούσιοι πτωχῶν ἄρξουσι, καὶ οἰκέται ἰδίοις δεσπόταις δανειοῦσι.

He that sows wickedness shall reap troubles; and shall fully receive the punishment of his deeds.	ὁ σπείρων φαῦλα θερίσει κακά, πληγὴν δὲ ἔργων αὐτοῦ συντελέσει. 8α ἄνδρα ἱλαρὸν καὶ δότην εὐλογεῖ ὁ Θεός, ματαιότητα δὲ ἔργων αὐτοῦ συντελέσει.

God loves a cheerful and liberal man; but a man shall fully prove the folly of his works.

He that has pity on the poor shall himself be maintained; for he has given of his own bread to the poor.	ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχὸν αὐτὸς διατραφήσεται, τῶν γὰρ ἑαυτοῦ ἄρτων ἔδωκε τῷ πτωχῷ. 9α νίκην καὶ τιμὴν περιποιεῖται ὁ δῶρα δούς, τὴν μέντοι ψυχὴν ἀφαιρεῖται τῶν κεκτημένων.

He that gives liberally secures victory and honour; but he takes away the life of them that possess them.

Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonours all.	ἔκβαλε ἐκ συνεδρίου λοιμόν, καὶ συνεξελεύσεται αὐτῷ νεῖκος· ὅταν γὰρ καθίσῃ ἐν συνεδρίῳ, πάντας ἀτιμάζει.

The Lord loves holy hearts, and all blameless persons are acceptable with him: a king rules with his lips.	ἀγαπᾷ Κύριος ὁσίας καρδίας, δεκτοὶ δὲ αὐτῷ πάντες ἄμωμοι· χείλεσι ποιμαίνει βασιλεύς.

But the eyes of the Lord preserve discretion; but the transgressor despises wise words.	οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ Κυρίου διατηροῦσιν αἴσθησιν, φαυλίζει δὲ λόγους παράνομος.
13	13
The sluggard makes excuses, and says, There is a lion in the ways, and murderers in the streets.	προφασίζεται καὶ λέγει ὀκνηρός· λέων ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς, ἐν δὲ ταῖς πλατείαις φονευταί.
14	14
The mouth of a transgressor is a deep pit; and he that is hated of the Lord shall fall into it.	βόθρος βαθὺς στόμα παρανόμου, ὁ δὲ μισηθεὶς ὑπὸ Κυρίου ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς αὐτόν. 14α εἰσὶν ὁδοὶ κακαὶ ἐνώπιον ἀνδρός, καὶ οὐκ ἀγαπᾷ τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν· ἀποστρέφειν δὲ δεῖ ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ σκολιᾶς καὶ κακῆς.

Evil ways are before a man, and he does not like to turn away from them; but it is needful to turn aside from a perverse and bad way.
15	15
Folly is attached to the heart of a child, but the rod and instruction are then far from him.	ἄνοια ἐξῆπται καρδίας νέου, ράβδος δὲ καὶ παιδεία μακρὰν ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ.

He that oppresses the poor, increases his own substance, yet gives to the rich so as to make it less.	ὁ συκοφαντῶν πένητα πολλὰ ποιεῖ τὰ ἑαυτοῦ· δίδωσι δὲ πλουσίῳ ἐπ᾿ ἐλλάσσονι.

Incline thine ear to the words of wise men: hear also my word, and apply thine heart,	Λόγοις σοφῶν παράβαλλε σὸν οὗς καὶ ἄκουε ἐμὸν λόγον, τὴν δὲ σὴν καρδίαν ἐπίστησον, ἵνα γνῷς, ὅτι καλοί εἰσι·

that thou mayest know that they are good: and if thou lay them to heart, they shall also gladden thee on thy lips.	καὶ ἐὰν ἐμβάλῃς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν καρδίαν σου, εὐφρανοῦσί σε ἅμα ἐπὶ σοῖς χείλεσιν,

That thy hope may be in the Lord, and he may make thy way known to thee.	ἵνα σου γένηται ἐπὶ Κύριον ἡ ἐλπὶς καὶ γνωρίσῃ σοι τὴν ὁδόν σου.
20	20
And do thou too repeatedly record them for thyself on the table of thine heart, for counsel and knowledge.	καὶ σὺ δὲ ἀπόγραψαι αὐτὰ σεαυτῷ τρισσῶς εἰς βουλὴν καὶ γνῶσιν ἐπὶ τὸ πλάτος τῆς καρδίας σου.

I therefore teach thee truth, and knowledge good to hear; that thou mayest answer words of truth to them that question thee.	διδάσκω οὖν σε ἀληθῆ λόγον καὶ γνῶσιν ἀγαθὴν ὑπακούειν, τοῦ ἀποκρίνεσθαί σε λόγους ἀληθείας τοῖς προβαλλομένοις σοι.

Do no violence to the poor, for he is needy: neither dishonour the helpless man in the gates.	Μὴ ἀποβιάζου πένητα, πτωχὸς γάρ ἐστι, καὶ μὴ ἀτιμάσῃς ἀσθενῆ ἐν πύλαις·

For the Lord will plead his cause, and thou shalt deliver thy soul in safety.	ὁ γὰρ Κύριος κρινεῖ αὐτοῦ τὴν κρίσιν, καὶ ρύσῃ σὴν ἄσυλον ψυχήν.

The glory of God conceals a matter: but the glory of a king honours business.	Δόξα Θεοῦ κρύπτει λόγον, δόξα δὲ βασιλέως τιμᾷ πράγματα.

Heaven is high, and earth is deep, and a king's heart is unsearchable.	οὐρανὸς ὑψηλός, γῆ δὲ βαθεῖα, καρδία δὲ βασιλέως ἀνεξέλεγκτος.

Beat the drossy silver, and it shall be made entirely pure.	τύπτε ἀδόκιμον ἀργύριον, καὶ καθαρισθήσεται καθαρὸν ἅπαν·

Slay the ungodly from before the king, and his throne shall prosper in righteousness.	κτεῖνε ἀσεβεῖς ἐκ προσώπου βασιλέως, καὶ κατορθώσει ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ὁ θρόνος αὐτοῦ.

Be not boastful in the presence of the king, and remain not in the places of princes;	μὴ ἀλαζονεύου ἐνώπιον βασιλέως, μηδὲ ἐν τόποις δυναστῶν ὑφίστασο·

for it is better for thee that it should be said, Come up to me, than that one should humble thee in the presence of the prince; speak of that which thine eyes have seen.	κρεῖσσον γάρ σοι τὸ ρηθῆναι· ἀνάβαινε πρός με ἢ ταπεινῶσαί σε ἐν προσώπῳ δυνάστου. ἃ εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου, λέγε.

Get not suddenly into a quarrel, lest thou repent at last.	μὴ πρόσπιπτε εἰς μάχην ταχέως, ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθῇς ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων. ἡνίκα ἄν σε ὀνειδίσῃ ὁ σὸς φίλος,

Whenever thy friend shall reproach thee, retreat backward, despise him not;	ἀναχώρει εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω μὴ καταφρόνει,

lest thy friend continue to reproach thee, so thy quarrel and enmity shall not depart, but shall be to thee like death.	μή σε ὀνειδίσῃ μὲν ὁ φίλος, ἡ δὲ μάχη σου καὶ ἡ ἔχθρα οὐκ ἀπέσται, ἀλλὰ ἔσται σοι ἴση θανάτῳ. 10α χάρις καὶ φιλία ἐλευθεροῖ, ἃς τήρησον σεαυτῷ, ἵνα μὴ ἐπονείδιστος γένῃ, ἀλλὰ φύλαξον τὰς ὁδούς σου εὐσυναλλάκτως.

Favour and friendship set a man free, which do thou keep for thyself, lest thou be made liable to reproach; but take heed to thy ways peaceably.

As a golden apple in a necklace of sardius, so is it to speak a wise word.	μῆλον χρυσοῦν ἐν ὁρμίσκῳ σαρδίου, οὕτως εἰπεῖν λόγον.

In an ear-ring of gold a precious sardius is also set; so is a wise word to an obedient ear.	εἰς ἐνώτιον χρυσοῦν καὶ σάρδιον πολυτελὲς δέδεται, λόγος σοφὸς εἰς εὐήκοον οὖς.

As a fall of snow in the time of harvest is good against heat, so a faithful messenger refreshes those that send him; for he helps the souls of his employers.	ὥσπερ ἔξοδος χιόνος ἐν ἀμήτῳ κατὰ καῦμα ὠφελεῖ, οὕτως ἄγγελος πιστὸς τοὺς ἀποστείλαντας αὐτόν· ψυχὰς γὰρ τῶν αὐτῷ χρωμένων ὠφελεῖ.

As winds and clouds and rains are most evident objects, so is he that boasts of a false gift.	ὥσπερ ἄνεμοι καὶ νέφη καὶ ὑετοὶ ἐπιφανέστατα, οὕτως ὁ καυχώμενος ἐπὶ δόσει ψευδεῖ.

In long-suffering is prosperity to kings, and a soft tongue breaks the bones.	ἐν μακροθυμίᾳ εὐοδία βασιλεῦσι, γλῶσσα δὲ μαλακὴ συντρίβει ὀστᾶ.

Having found honey, eat only what is enough, lest haply thou be filled, and vomit it up.	μέλι εὑρὼν φάγε τὸ ἱκανόν, μήποτε πλησθεὶς ἐξεμέσῃς.

Enter sparingly into thy friend's house, lest he be satiated with thy company, and hate thee.	σπάνιον εἴσαγε σὸν πόδα πρὸς σεαυτοῦ φίλον, μήποτε πλησθείς σου μισήσῃ σε.

As a club, and a dagger, and a pointed arrow, so also is a man who bears false witness against his friend.	ρόπαλον καὶ μάχαιρα καὶ τόξευμα ἀκιδωτόν, οὕτως καὶ ἀνὴρ ὁ καταμαρτυρῶν τοῦ φίλου αὐτοῦ μαρτυρίαν ψευδῆ.

The way of the wicked and the foot of the transgressor shall perish in an evil day.	ὁδὸς κακοῦ καὶ ποὺς παρανόμου ὀλεῖται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῇ.

As vinegar is bad for a sore, so trouble befalling the body afflicts the heart.	ὥσπερ ὄξος ἕλκει ἀσύμφορον, οὕτως προσπεσὸν πάθος ἐν σώματι καρδίαν λυπεῖ. 20α ὥσπερ σὴς ἐν ἱματίῳ καὶ σκώληξ ξύλῳ, οὕτως λύπη ἀνδρὸς βλάπτει καρδίαν.

As a moth in a garment, and a worm in wood, so the grief of a man hurts the heart.

If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink;	ἐὰν πεινᾷ ὁ ἐχθρός σου, ψώμιζε αὐτόν, ἐὰν διψᾷ, πότιζε αὐτόν·

for so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee with good.	τοῦτο γὰρ ποιῶν ἄνθρακας πυρὸς σωρεύσεις ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, ὁ δὲ Κύριος ἀνταποδώσει σοι ἀγαθά.

The north wind raises clouds; so an impudent face provokes the tongue.	ἄνεμος Βορέας ἐξεγείρει νέφη, πρόσωπον δὲ ἀναιδὲς γλῶσσαν ἐρεθίζει.

It is better to dwell on a corner of the roof, than with a railing woman in an open house.	κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐπὶ γωνίας δώματος ἢ μετὰ γυναικὸς λοιδόρου ἐν οἰκίᾳ κοινῇ.

As cold water is agreeable to a thirsting soul, so is a good message from a land far off.	ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ψυχρὸν ψυχῇ διψώσῃ προσηνές, οὕτως ἀγγελία ἀγαθὴ ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν.

As if one should stop a well, and corrupt a spring of water, so is it unseemly for a righteous man to fall before an ungodly man.	ὥσπερ εἴ τις πηγὴ φράσσοι καὶ ὕδατος ἔξοδον λυμαίνοιτο, οὕτως ἄκοσμον δίκαιον πεπτωκέναι ἐνώπιον ἀσεβοῦς.

It is not good to eat much honey; but it is right to honour venerable sayings.	ἐσθίειν μέλι πολὺ οὐ καλόν, τιμᾶ δὲ χρὴ λόγους ἐνδόξους.

Chapter 26	Κεφάλαιο 26

As dew in harvest, and as rain in summer, so honour is not seemly for a fool.	ΩΣΠΕΡ δρόσος ἐν ἀμήτῳ καὶ ὥσπερ ὑετὸς ἐν θέρει, οὕτως οὐκ ἔστιν ἄφρονι τιμή.

As birds and sparrows fly, so a curse shall not come upon any one without a cause.	ὥσπερ ὄρνεα πέταται καὶ στρουθοί, οὕτως ἀρὰ ματαία οὐκ ἐπελεύσεται οὐδενί.

As a whip for a horse, and a goad for an ass, so is a rod for a simple nation.	ὥσπερ μάστιξ ἵππῳ καὶ κέντρον ὄνῳ, οὕτως ράβδος ἔθνει παρανόμῳ.

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou become like him.	μὴ ἀποκρίνου ἄφρονι πρὸς τὴν ἐκείνου ἀφροσύνην, ἵνα μὴ ὅμοιος γένῃ αὐτῷ·

Yet answer a fool according to his folly, lest he seem wise in his own conceit.	ἀλλὰ ἀποκρίνου ἄφρονι κατὰ τὴν ἀφροσύνην αὐτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ φαίνηται σοφός παρ᾿ ἑαυτῷ.

He that sends a message by a foolish messenger procures for himself a reproach from his own ways.	ἐκ τῶν ὁδῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὄνειδος ποιεῖται ὁ ἀποστείλας δι᾿ ἀγγέλου ἄφρονος λόγον.

As well take away the motion of the legs, as transgression from the mouth of fools.	ἀφελοῦ πορείαν σκελῶν καὶ παρανομίαν ἐκ στόματος ἀφρόνων.

He that binds up a stone in a sling, is like one that gives glory to a fool.	ὃς ἀποδεσμεύει λίθον ἐν σφενδόνῃ, ὅμοιός ἐστι τῷ διδόντι ἄφρονι δόξαν.

Thorns grow in the hand of a drunkard, and servitude in the hand of fools.	ἄκανθαι φύονται ἐν χειρὶ μεθύσου, δουλεία δὲ ἐν χειρὶ τῶν ἀφρόνων.

All the flesh of fools endures much hardship; for their fury is brought to nought.	πολλὰ χειμάζεται πᾶσα σάρξ ἀφρόνων· συντρίβεται γὰρ ἡ ἔκστασις αὐτῶν.

As when a dog goes to his own vomit, and becomes abominable, so is a fool who returns in his wickedness to his own sin.	ὥσπερ κύων ὅταν ἐπέλθῃ ἐπὶ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ ἔμετον καὶ μισητὸς γένηται, οὕτως ἄφρων τῇ ἑαυτοῦ κακίᾳ ἀναστρέψας ἐπὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίαν. 11α ἔστιν αἰσχύνη ἐπάγουσα ἁμαρτίαν, καί ἐστιν αἰσχύνη δόξα καὶ χάρις.

There is a shame that brings sin: and there is a shame that is glory and grace.

I have seen a man who seemed to himself to be wise; but a fool had more hope than he.	εἶδον ἄνδρα δόξαντα παρ᾿ αὑτῷ σοφὸν εἶναι, ἐλπίδα μέντοι ἔσχε μᾶλλον ἄφρων αὐτοῦ.

A sluggard when sent on a journey says, There is a lion in the ways, and there are murderers in the streets.	λέγει ὀκνηρὸς ἀποστελλόμενος εἰς ὁδόν· λέων ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς, ἐν δὲ ταῖς πλατείαις φονευταί.

As a door turns on the hinge, so does a sluggard on his bed.	ὥσπερ θύρα στρέφεται ἐπὶ τοῦ στρόφιγγος, οὕτως ὀκνηρὸς ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης αὐτοῦ.

A sluggard having hid his hand in his bosom, will not be able to bring it up to his mouth.	κρύψας ὀκνηρὸς τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ αὐτοῦ, οὐ δυνήσεται ἐπενεγκεῖν ἐπὶ στόμα.

A sluggard seems to himself wiser than one who most satisfactorily brings back a message.	σοφώτερος ἑαυτῷ ὀκνηρὸς φαίνεται τοῦ ἐν πλησμονῇ ἀποκομίζοντος ἀγγελίαν.

As he that lays hold of a dog's tail, so is he that makes himself the champion of another's cause.	ὥσπερ ὁ κρατῶν κέρκου κυνός, οὕτως ὁ προεστὼς ἀλλοτρίας κρίσεως.

As those who need correction put forth fair words to men, and he that first falls in with the proposal will be overthrown;	ὥσπερ οἱ ἰώμενοι προβάλλουσι λόγους εἰς ἀνθρώπους, ὁ δὲ ἀπαντήσας τῷ λόγῳ πρῶτος ὑποσκελισθήσεται,

so are all that lay wait for their own friends, and when they are discovered, say, I did it in jest.	οὕτως πάντες οἱ ἐνεδρεύοντες τοὺς ἑαυτῶν φίλους, ὅταν δὲ ὁραθῶσι, λέγουσι ὅτι παίζων ἔπραξα.

With much wood fire increases; but where there is not a double-minded man, strife ceases.	ἐν πολλοῖς ξύλοις θάλλει πῦρ, ὅπου δὲ οὐκ ἔστι δίθυμος, ἡσυχάζει μάχη.

A hearth for coals, and wood for fire; and a railing man for the tumult of strife.	ἐσχάρα ἄνθραξι καὶ ξύλα πυρί, ἀνὴρ δὲ λοίδορος εἰς ταραχὴν μάχης.

The words of cunning knaves are soft; but they smite even to the inmost parts of the bowels.	λόγοι κερκώπων μαλακοί, οὗτοι δὲ τύπτουσιν εἰς ταμιεῖα σπλάγχνων.

Silver dishonestly given is to be considered as a potsherd: smooth lips cover a grievous heart.	ἀργύριον διδόμενον μετὰ δόλου, ὥσπερ ὄστρακον ἡγητέον. χείλη λεῖα καρδίαν καλύπτει λυπηράν.

A weeping enemy promises all things with his lips, but in his heart he contrives deceit.	χείλεσι πάντα ἐπινεύει ἀποκλαιόμενος ἐχθρός, ἐν δὲ τῇ καρδίᾳ τεκταίνεται δόλους.

Though thine enemy intreat thee with a loud voice, consent not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.	ἐάν σου δέηται ὁ ἐχθρὸς μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ, μὴ πεισθῆς, ἑπτὰ γάρ εἰσι πονηρίαι ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ.

He that hides enmity frames deceit: but being easily discerned, exposes his own sins in the public assemblies.	ὁ κρύπτων ἔχθραν συνίστησι δόλον, ἐκκαλύπτει δὲ τὰς ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίας εὔγνωστος ἐν συνεδρίοις.

He that digs a pit for his neighbour shall fall into it: and he that rolls a stone, rolls it upon himself.	ὁ ὀρύσσων βόθρον τῷ πλησίον ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς αὐτόν, ὁ δὲ κυλίων λίθον ἐφ᾿ ἑαυτὸν κυλίει.

Chapter 27	Κεφάλαιο 27

Boast not of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what the next day shall bring forth.	ΜΗ καυχῶ τὰ εἰς αὔριον, οὐ γὰρ γινώσκεις τί τέξεται ἡ ἐπιοῦσα.

Let thy neighbour, and not thine own mouth, praise thee; a stranger, and not thine own lips.	ἐγκωμιαζέτω σε ὁ πέλας καὶ μὴ τὸ σὸν στόμα, ἀλλότριος καὶ μὴ τὰ σὰ χείλη.

A stone is heavy, and sand cumbersome; but a fool's wrath is heavier than both.	βαρὺ λίθος καὶ δυσβάστακτον ἄμμος, ὀργὴ δὲ ἄφρονος βαρυτέρα ἀμφοτέρων.

Wrath is merciless, and anger sharp: but envy can bear nothing.	ἀνελεήμων θυμὸς καὶ ὀξεῖα ὀργή, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδένα ὑφίσταται ζῆλος.

Open reproofs are better than secret love.	κρείσσους ἔλεγχοι ἀποκεκαλυμμένοι κρυπτομένης φιλίας.

The wounds of a friend are more to be trusted than the spontaneous kisses of an enemy.	ἀξιοπιστόστερά εἰσι τραύματα φίλου ἢ ἐκούσια φιλήματα ἐχθροῦ.

A full soul scorns honeycombs; but to a hungry soul even bitter things appear sweet.	ψυχὴ ἐν πλησμονῇ οὖσα κηρίοις ἐμπαίζει, ψυχῇ δὲ ἐνδεεῖ καὶ τὰ πικρὰ γλυκέα φαίνεται.

As when a bird flies down from its own nest, so a man is brought into bondage whenever he estranges himself from his own place.	ὥσπερ ὅταν ὄρνεον καταπετασθῇ ἐκ τῆς ἰδίας νοσσιᾶς, οὕτως ἄνθρωπος δουλοῦται ὅταν ἀποξενωθῇ ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων τόπων.

The heart delights in ointments and wines and perfumes: but the soul is broken by calamities.	μύροις καὶ οἴνοις καὶ θυμιάμασι τέρπεται καρδία, καταρρήγνυται δὲ ὑπὸ συμπτωμάτων ψυχή.

Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; and when thou art in distress go not into thy brother's house: better is a friend that is near than a brother living far off.	φίλον σὸν ἢ φίλον πατρῷον μὴ ἐγκαταλίπῃς, εἰς δὲ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου μὴ εἰσέλθης ἀτυχῶν· κρείσσων φίλος ἐγγὺς ἢ ἀδελφὸς μακρὰν οἰκῶν.

Son, be wise, that thy heart may rejoice; and remove thou from thyself reproachful words.	σοφὸς γίνου, υἱέ, ἵνα σου εὐφραίνηται ἡ καρδία, καὶ ἀπόστρεψον ἀπὸ σοῦ ἐπονειδίστους λόγους.

A wise man, when evils are approaching, hides himself; but fools pass on, and will be punished.	πανοῦργος κακῶν ἐπερχομένων ἀπεκρύβη, ἄφρονες δὲ ἐπελθόντες ζημίαν τίσουσιν.

Take away the man's garment, (for a scorner has passed by) whoever lays waste another's goods.	ἀφελοῦ τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ, παρῆλθε γὰρ ὑβριστής, ὅστις τὰ ἀλλότρια λυμαίνεται.

Whosoever shall bless a friend in the morning with a loud voice, shall seem to differ nothing from one who curses him.	ὃς ἂν εὐλογῇ φίλον τὸ πρωΐ μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ, καταρωμένου οὐδὲν διαφέρειν δόξει.

On a stormy day drops of rain drive a man out of his house; so also does a railing woman drive a man out of his own house.	σταγόνες ἐκβάλλουσιν ἄνθρωπον ἐν ἡμέρᾳ χειμερινῇ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, ὡσαύτως καὶ γυνὴ λοίδορος ἐκ τοῦ ἱδίου οἴκου.

The north wind is sharp, but it is called by name propitious.	Βορέας σκληρὸς ἄνεμος, ὀνόματι δὲ ἐπιδέξιος καλεῖται.

Iron sharpens iron; and a man sharpens his friend's countenance.	σίδηρος σίδηρον ὀξύνει, ἀνὴρ δὲ παροξύνει πρόσωπον ἑταίρου.

He that plants a fig-tree shall eat the fruits of it: so he that waits on his own master shall be honoured.	ὃς φυτεύει συκῆν φάγεται τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς, ὃς δὲ φυλάσσει τὸν ἑαυτοῦ κύριον, τιμηθήσεται.

As faces are not like other faces, so neither are the thoughts of men.	ὥσπερ οὐκ ὅμοια πρόσωπα προσώποις, οὕτως οὐδὲ αἱ διάνοιαι τῶν ἀνθρώπων.

Hell and destruction are not filled; so also are the eyes of men insatiable.	ᾅδης καὶ ἀπώλεια οὐκ ἐμπίμπλανται, ὡσαύτως καὶ οἱ ὁφθαλμοὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἄπληστοι. 20α βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ στηρίζων ὀφθαλμόν, καὶ οἱ ἀπαίδευτοι ἀκρατεῖς γλώσσῃ.

He that fixes his eye is an abomination to the Lord; and the uninstructed do not restrain their tongue.

Fire is the trial for silver and gold; and a man is tried by the mouth of them that praise him.	δοκίμιον ἀργυρῷ καὶ χρυσῷ πύρωσις, ἀνὴρ δὲ δοκιμάζεται διὰ στόματος ἐγκωμιαζόντων αὐτόν. 21α καρδία ἀνόμου ἐκζητεῖ κακά, καρδία δὲ εὐθὴς ἐκζητεῖ γνῶσιν.

The heart of the transgressor seeks after mischiefs; but an upright heart seeks knowledge.

Though thou scourge a fool, disgracing him in the midst of the council, thou wilt still in no wise remove his folly from him.	ἐὰν μαστιγοῖς ἄφρονα ἐν μέσῳ συνεδρίου ἀτιμάζων, οὐ μὴ περιέλῃς τὴν ἀφροσύνην αὐτοῦ.

Do thou thoroughly know the number of thy flock, and pay attention to thine herds.	γνωστῶς ἐπιγνώσῃ ψυχὰς ποιμνίου σου καὶ ἐπιστήσεις καρδίαν σου σαῖς ἀγέλαις·

For a man has not strength and power for ever; neither does he transmit it from generation to generation.	ὅτι οὐκ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀνδρὶ κράτος καὶ ἰσχύς, οὐδὲ παραδίδωσιν ἐκ γενεᾶς εἰς γενεάν.

Take care of the herbage in the field, and thou shalt cut grass, and gather the mountain hay;	ἐπιμελοῦ τῶν ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ χλωρῶν καὶ κερεῖς πόαν, καὶ σύναγε χόρτον ὀρεινόν,

that thou mayest have wool of sheep for clothing: pay attention to the land, that thou mayest have lambs.	ἵνα ἔχῃς πρόβατα εἰς ἱματισμόν· τίμα πεδίον, ἵνα ὦσί σοι ἄρνες.

My son, thou hast from me words very useful for thy life, and for the life of thy servants.	υἱέ, παρ᾿ ἐμοῦ ἔχεις ρήσεις ἰσχυρὰς εἰς τὴν ζωήν σου καὶ εἰς τὴν ζωὴν σῶν θεραπόντων.

The ungodly man flees when no one pursues: but the righteous is confident as a lion.	ΦΕΥΓΕΙ ἀσεβὴς μηδενὸς διώκοντος, δίκαιος δὲ ὥσπερ λέων πέποιθε.

By reason of the sins of ungodly men quarrels arise; but a wise man will quell them.	δι᾿ ἁμαρτίας ἀσεβῶν κρίσεις ἐγείρονται, ἀνὴρ δὲ πανοῦργος κατασβέσει αὐτάς.

A bold man oppresses the poor by ungodly deeds. As an impetuous and unprofitable rain,	ἀνδρεῖος ἐν ἀσεβείαις συκοφαντεῖ πτωχούς. ὥσπερ ὑετὸς λάβρος καὶ ἀνωφελής,

so they that forsake the law praise ungodliness; but they that love the law fortify themselves with a wall.	οὕτως οἱ ἐγκαταλείποντες τὸν νόμον ἐγκωμιάζουν ἀσέβειαν, οἱ δὲ ἀγαπῶντες τὸν νόμον περιβάλλουσιν ἑαυτοῖς τεῖχος.

Evil men will not understand judgment: but they that seek the Lord will understand everything.	ἄνδρες κακοὶ οὐ νοήσουσι κρίμα, οἱ δὲ ζητοῦντες τὸν Κύριον συνήσουσιν ἐν παντί.

A poor man walking in truth is better than a rich liar.	κρείσσων πτωχὸς πορευόμενος ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, πλουσίου ψευδοῦς.
7	7
A wise son keeps the law: but he that keeps up debauchery dishonours his father.	φυλάσσει νόμον υἱὸς συνετός, ὃς δὲ ποιμαίνει ἀσωτίαν ἀτιμάζει πατέρα.
8	8
He that increases his wealth by usuries and unjust gains, gathers it for him that pities the poor.	ὁ πληθύνων τὸν πλοῦτον αὐτοῦ μετὰ τόκων καὶ πλεονασμῶν, τῷ ἐλεῶντι πτωχοὺς συνάγει αὐτόν.

He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even he has made his prayer abominable.	ὁ ἐκκλίνων τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ μὴ εἰσακοῦσαι νόμου, καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν προσευχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐβδέλυκται.
10	10
He that causes upright men to err in an evil way, himself shall fall into destruction: transgressors also shall pass by prosperity, but shall not enter into it.	ὃς πλανᾷ εὐθεῖς ἐν ὁδῷ κακῇ, εἰς διαφθορὰν αὐτὸς ἐμπεσεῖται· οἱ δὲ ἄνομοι διελεύσονται ἀγαθά, καὶ οὐκ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς αὐτά.
11	11
A rich man is wise in his own conceit; but an intelligent poor man will condemn him.	σοφὸς παρ᾿ ἑαυτῷ ἀνὴρ πλούσιος, πένης δὲ νοήμων καταγνώσεται αὐτοῦ.
12	12
By reason of the help of righteous men great glory arises: but in the places of the ungodly men are caught.	διὰ βοήθειαν δικαίων πολλὴν γίνεται δόξα, ἐν δὲ τόποις ἀσεβῶν ἁλίσκονται ἄνθρωποι.
13	13
He that covers his own ungodliness shall not prosper: but he that blames himself shall be loved.	ὁ ἐπικαλύπτων ἀσέβειαν ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εὐοδωθήσεται, ὁ δὲ ἐξηγούμενος ἐλέγχους ἀγαπηθήσεται.
14	14
Blessed is the man who religiously fears always: but the hard of heart shall fall into mischiefs.	μακάριος ἀνήρ, ὃς καταπτήσσει πάντα δι᾿ εὐλάβειαν, ὁ δὲ σκληρὸς τὴν καρδίαν ἐμπεσεῖται κακοῖς.
15	15
A hungry lion and a thirsty wolf is he, who, being poor, rules over a poor nation.	λέων πεινῶν καὶ λύκος διψῶν, ὃς τυραννεῖ, πτωχὸς ὤν, ἔθνους πενιχροῦ.
16	16
A king in need of revenues is a great oppressor: but he that hates injustice shall live a long time.	βασιλεὺς ἐνδεὴς προσόδων μέγας συκοφάντης, ὁ δὲ μισῶν ἀδικίαν μακρὸν χρόνον ζήσεται.
17	17
He that becomes surety for a man charged with murder shall be an exile, and not in safety.	ἄνδρα τὸν ἐν αἰτίᾳ φόνου ὁ ἐγγυώμενος, φυγὰς ἔσται καὶ οὐκ ἐν ἀσφαλείᾳ. 17α παίδευε υἱὸν καὶ ἀγαπήσει σε, καὶ δώσει κόσμον τῇ σῆ ψυχῇ· οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσει ἔθνει παρανόμῳ.

Chasten thy son, and he shall love thee, and give honour to thy soul: he shall not obey a sinful nation.
18	18
He that walks justly is assisted: but he that walks in crooked ways shall be entangled therein.	ὁ πορευόμενος δικαίως βεβοήθηται, ὁ δὲ σκολιαῖς ὁδοῖς πορευόμενος ἐμπλακήσεται.
19	19
He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows idleness shall have plenty of poverty.	ὁ ἐργαζόμενος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γῆν πλησθήσεται ἄρτων, ὁ δὲ διώκων σχολὴν πλησθήσεται πενίας.
20	20
A man worthy of credit shall be much blessed: but the wicked shall not be unpunished.	ἀνὴρ ἀξιόπιστος πολλὰ εὐλογηθήσεται, ὁ δὲ κακὸς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται.
21	21
He that reverences not the persons of the just is not good: such a one will sell a man for a morsel of bread.	ὃς οὐκ αἰσχύνεται πρόσωπα δικαίων, οὐκ ἀγαθός· ὁ τοιοῦτος ψωμοῦ ἄρτου ἀποδώσεται ἄνδρα.
22	22
An envious man makes haste to be rich, and knows not that the merciful man will have the mastery over him.	σπεύδει πλουτεῖν ἀνὴρ βάσκανος, καὶ οὐκ οἶδεν ὅτι ἐλεήμων κρατήσει αὐτοῦ.
23	23
He that reproves a man's ways shall have more favour than he that flatters with the tongue.	ὁ ἐλέγχων ἀνθρώπου ὁδοὺς χάριτας ἕξει μᾶλλον τοῦ γλωσσοχαριτοῦντος.
24	24
He that casts off father or mother, and thinks he sins not; the same is partaker with an ungodly man.	ὃς ἀποβάλλεται πατέρα ἢ μητέρα, καὶ δοκεῖ μὴ ἁμαρτάνειν, οὗτος κοινωνός ἐστιν ἀνδρὸς ἀσεβοῦς.
25	25
An unbelieving man judges rashly: but he that trusts in the Lord will act carefully.	ἄπιστος ἀνὴρ κρίνει εἰκῆ, ὃς δὲ πέποιθεν ἐπὶ Κύριον ἐν ἐπιμελείᾳ ἔσται.
26	26
He that trusts to a bold heart, such an one is a fool: but he that walks in wisdom shall be safe.	ὃς πέποιθε θρασείᾳ καρδίᾳ, ὁ τοιοῦτος ἄφρων· ὃς δὲ πορεύεται σοφίᾳ σωθήσεται.
27	27
He that gives to the poor shall not be in want: but he that turns away his eye from him shall be in great distress.	ὃς δίδωσι πτωχοῖς, οὐκ ἐνδεηθήσεται, ὃς δὲ ἀποστρέφει τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν αὐτοῦ, ἐν πολλῇ ἀπορίᾳ ἔσται.

In the places of ungodly men the righteous mourn: but in their destruction the righteous shall be multiplied.	ἐν τόποις ἀσεβῶν στένουσι δίκαιοι, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐκείνων ἀπωλείᾳ πληθυνθήσονται δίκαιοι.
Chapter 29	Κεφάλαιο 29

1	1
A reprover is better than a stiff-necked man: for when the latter is suddenly set on fire, there shall be no remedy.	ΚΡΕΙΣΣΩΝ ἀνὴρ ἐλέγχων ἀνδρὸς σκληροτραχήλου, ἐξαπίνης γὰρ φλεγομένου αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις.
2	2
When the righteous are praised, the people will rejoice: but when the ungodly rule, men mourn.	ἐγκωμιαζομένων δικαίων εὐφρανθήσονται λαοί, ἀρχόντων δὲ ἀσεβῶν στένουσιν ἄνδρες.
3	3
When a man loves wisdom, his father rejoices: but he that keeps harlots will waste wealth.	ἀνδρὸς φιλοῦντος σοφίαν εὐφραίνεται πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, ὃς δὲ ποιμαίνει πόρνας, ἀπολεῖ πλοῦτον.

A righteous king establishes a country: but a transgressor destroys it.	βασιλεὺς δίκαιος ἀνίστησι χώραν, ἀνὴρ δὲ παράνομος κατασκάπτει.
5	5
He that prepares a net in the way of his own friend, entangles his own feet in it.	ὃς παρασκευάζεται ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἑαυτοῦ φίλους δίκτυον, περιβάλλει αὐτὸ τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ ποσίν.
6	6
A great snare is spread for a sinner: but the righteous shall be in joy and gladness.	ἁμαρτάνοντι ἀνδρὶ μεγάλη παγίς, δίκαιος δὲ ἐν χαρᾷ καὶ ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ ἔσται.
7	7
A righteous man knows how to judge for the poor: but the ungodly understands not knowledge; and the poor man has not an understanding mind.	ἐπίσταται δίκαιος κρίνειν πενιχροῖς, ὁ δὲ ἀσεβὴς οὐ νοεῖ γνῶσιν, καὶ πτωχῷ οὐχ ὑπάρχει νοῦς ἐπιγνώμων.

Lawless men burn down a city: but wise men turn away wrath.	ἄνδρες ἄνομοι ἐξέκαυσαν πόλιν, σοφοὶ δὲ ἐπέστρεψαν ὀργήν.
9	9
A wise man shall judge nations: but a worthless man being angry laughs and fears not.	ἀνὴρ σοφὸς κρινεῖ ἔθνη, ἀνὴρ δὲ φαῦλος ὀργιζόμενος καταγελᾶται καὶ οὐ καταπτήσσει.
10	10
Bloody men hate a holy person, but the upright will seek his soul.	). Γυναῖκα ἀνδρείαν τίς εὑρήσει; τιμιωτέρα δέ ἐστι λίθων πολυτελῶν ἡ τοιαύτη.
11	11
A fool utters all his mind: but the wise reserves his in part.	θάρσει ἐπ᾿ αὐτῇ ἡ καρδία τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς, ἡ τοιαύτη καλῶν σκύλων οὐκ ἀπορήσει·
12	12
When a king hearkens to unjust language, all his subjects are transgressors.	ἐνεργεῖ γὰρ τῷ ἀνδρὶ ἀγαθὰ πάντα τὸν βίον.
13	13
When the creditor and debtor meet together, the Lord oversees them both.	μηρυομένη ἔρια καὶ λίνον ἐποίησεν εὔχρηστον ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῆς.
14	14
When a king judges the poor in truth, his throne shall be established for a testimony.	ἐγένετο ὡσεὶ ναῦς ἐμπορευομένη μακρόθεν, συνάγει δὲ αὐτῆς τὸν πλοῦτον.*
15	15
Stripes and reproofs give wisdom: but an erring child disgraces his parents.	καὶ ἀνίσταται ἐκ νυκτῶν καὶ ἔδωκε βρώματα τῷ οἴκῳ καὶ ἔργα ταῖς θεραπαίναις.
16	16
When the ungodly abound, sins abound: but when they fall, the righteous are warned.	θεωρήσασα γεώργιον ἐπρίατο, ἀπὸ δὲ καρπῶν χειρῶν αὐτῆς κατεφύτευσε κτῆμα.
17	17
Chasten thy son, and he shall give thee rest; and he shall give honour to thy soul.	ἀναζωσαμένη ἰσχυρῶς τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτῆς ἤρεισε τοὺς βραχίονας αὐτῆς εἰς ἔργον.
18	18
There shall be no interpreter to a sinful nation: but he that observes the law is blessed.	ἐγεύσατο ὅτι καλόν ἐστι τὸ ἐργάζεσθαι, καὶ οὐκ ἀποσβέννυται ὁ λύχνος αὐτῆς ὅλην τὴν νύκτα.
19	19
A stubborn servant will not be reproved by words: for even if he understand, still he will not obey.	τοὺς πήχεις αὐτῆς ἐκτείνει ἐπὶ τὰ συμφέροντα, τὰς δὲ χεῖρας αὐτῆς ἐρείδει εἰς ἄτρακτον.
20	20
If thou see a man hasty in his words, know that the fool has hope rather than he.	χεῖρας δὲ αὐτῆς διήνοιξε πένητι, καρπὸν δὲ ἐξέτεινε πτωχῷ.
21	21
He that lives wantonly from a child, shall be a servant, and in the end shall grieve over himself.	οὐ φροντίζει τῶν ἐν οἴκῳ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, ὅταν που χρονίζῃ· πάντες γὰρ οἱ παρ᾿ αὐτῆς ἐνδεδυμένοι εἰσί.
22	22
A furious man stirs up strife, and a passionate man digs up sin.	δισσὰς χλαίνας ἐποίησε τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς, ἐκ δὲ βύσσου καὶ πορφύρας ἑαυτῇ ἐνδύματα.
23	23
Pride brings a man low, but the Lord upholds the humble-minded with honour.	περίβλεπτος δὲ γίνεται ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς ἐν πύλαις, ἡνίκα ἂν καθίση ἐν συνεδρίῳ μετὰ τῶν γερόντων κατοίκων τῆς γῆς.
24	24
He that shares with a thief, hates his own soul: and if any having heard an oath uttered tell not of it,	σινδόνας ἐποίησε καὶ ἀπέδοτο τοῖς Φοίνιξι, περιζώματα δὲ τοῖς Χαναναίοις.
25	25
they fearing and reverencing men unreasonably have been overthrown, but he that trusts in the Lord shall rejoice. Ungodliness causes a man to stumble: but he that trusts in his master shall be safe.	ἰσχὺν καὶ εὐπρέπειαν ἐνεδύσατο καὶ εὐφράνθη ἐν ἡμέραις ἐσχάταις.
26	26
Many wait on the favour of rulers; but justice comes to a man from the Lord.	στόμα αὐτῆς διήνοιξε προσεχόντως καὶ ἐννόμως, καὶ τάξιν ἐστείλατο τῇ γλώσσῃ αὐτῆς.
27	27
A righteous man is an abomination to an unrighteous man, and the direct way is an abomination to the sinner.	στεγναὶ διατριβαὶ οἴκων αὐτῆς, σῖτα δὲ ὀκνηρὰ οὐκ ἔφαγε.
Chapter 31

Who shall find a virtuous woman? for such a one is more valuable than precious stones.
11
The heart of her husband trusts in her: such a one shall stand in no need of fine spoils.
12
For she employs all her living for her husband's good.
13
Gathering wool and flax, she makes it serviceable with her hands.
14
She is like a ship trading from a distance: so she procures her livelihood.
15
And she rises by night, and gives food to her household, and appointed tasks to her maidens.
16
She views a farm, and buys it: and with the fruit of her hands she plants a possession.
17
She strongly girds her loins, and strengthens her arms for work.
18
And she finds by experience that working is good; and her candle goes not out all night.
19
She reaches forth her arms to needful works, and applies her hands to the spindle.
20
And she opens her hands to the needy, and reaches out fruit to the poor.
21
Her husband is not anxious about those at home when he tarries anywhere abroad: for all her household are clothed.
22
She makes for her husband clothes of double texture, and garments for herself of fine linen and scarlet.
23
And her husband becomes a distinguished person in the gates, when he sits in council with the old inhabitants of the land.
24
She makes fine linens, and sells girdles to the Chananites: she opens her mouth heedfully and with propriety, and controls her tongue.
25
She puts on strength and honour; and rejoices in the last days.
26
The ways of her household are careful, and she eats not the bread of idleness.
27
But she opens her mouth wisely, and according to law.
28
And her kindness to them sets up her children for them, and they grow rich, and her husband praises her.
29
Many daughters have obtained wealth, many have wrought valiantly; but thou hast exceeded, thou hast surpassed all.
30
Charms are false, and woman's beauty is vain: for it is a wise woman that is blessed, and let her praise the fear of the Lord.
31
Give her of the fruit of her lips; and let her husband be praised in the gates.
