ΠΑΡΟΙΜΙΑΙ Σολομῶντος υἱοῦ Δαυίδ, ὃς ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν ᾿Ισραήλ,	The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, who reigned in Israel;

γνῶναι σοφίαν καὶ παιδείαν νοῆσαί τε λόγους φρονήσεως	to know wisdom and instruction, and to perceive words of understanding;
3	3
δέξασθαί τε στροφὰς λόγων νοῆσαί τε δικαιοσύνην ἀληθῆ καὶ κρίμα κατευθύνειν,	to receive also hard sayings, and to understand true justice, and how to direct judgment;
4	4
ἵνα δῷ ἀκάκοις πανουργίαν, παιδὶ δὲ νέῳ αἴσθησίν τε καὶ ἔννοιαν·	that he might give subtlety to the simple, and to the young man discernment and understanding.

τῶνδε γὰρ ἀκούσας σοφὸς σοφώτερος ἔσται, ὁ δὲ νοήμων κυβέρνησιν κτήσεται.	For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and the man of understanding will gain direction;

νοήσει τε παραβολὴν καὶ σκοτεινὸν λόγον ρήσεις τε σοφῶν καὶ αἰνίγματα.	and will understand a parable, and a dark speech; the sayings of the wise also, and riddles.

᾿Αρχὴ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου, σύνεσις δὲ ἀγαθὴ πᾶσι τοῖς ποιοῦσι αὐτήν· εὐσέβεια δὲ εἰς Θεὸν ἀρχὴ αἰσθήσεως, σοφίαν δὲ καὶ παιδείαν ἀσεβεῖς ἐξουθενήσουσιν.	The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and there is good understanding to all that practise it: and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nought wisdom and instruction.

ἄκουε, υἱέ, παιδείαν πατρός σου καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ θεσμοὺς μητρός σου·	Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and reject not the rules of thy mother.

στέφανον γὰρ χαρίτων δέξῃ σῇ κορυφῇ καὶ κλοιὸν χρύσεον περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ.	For thou shalt receive for thine head a crown of graces, and a chain of gold round thy neck.

υἱέ, μή σε πλανήσωσιν ἄνδρες ἀσεβεῖς, μηδὲ βουληθῇς,	My son, let not ungodly men lead thee astray, neither consent thou to them.

ἐὰν παρακαλέσωσί σε λέγοντες· ἐλθὲ μεθ᾿ ἡμῶν, κοινώνησον αἵματος, κρύψωμεν δὲ εἰς γῆν ἄνδρα δίκαιον ἀδίκως,	If they should exhort thee, saying, Come with us, partake in blood, and let us unjustly hide the just man in the earth:

καταπίωμεν δὲ αὐτὸν ὥσπερ ᾅδης ζῶντα καὶ ἄρωμεν αὐτοῦ τὴν μνήμην ἐκ γῆς·	and let us swallow him alive, as Hades would, and remove the memorial of him from the earth:
13	13
τὴν κτῆσιν αὐτοῦ τὴν πολυτελῆ καταλαβώμεθα, πλήσωμεν δὲ οἴκους ἡμετέρους σκύλων·	let us seize on his valuable property, and let us fill our houses with spoils:
14	14
τὸν δὲ σὸν κλῆρον βάλε ἐν ἡμῖν, κοινὸν δὲ βαλάντιον κτησώμεθα πάντες, καὶ μαρσίππιον ἓν γενηθήτω ἡμῖν.	but do thou cast in thy lot with us, and let us all provide a common purse, and let us have one pouch:

μὴ πορευθῆς ἐν ὁδῷ μετ᾿ αὐτῶν, ἔκλινον δὲ τὸν πόδα σου ἐκ τῶν τρίβων αὐτῶν·	go not in the way with them, but turn aside thy foot from their paths:
16
οἱ γὰρ πόδες αὐτῶν εἰς κακίαν τρέχουσι καὶ ταχινοὶ τοῦ ἐκχέαι αἷμα·
17	17
οὐ γὰρ ἀδίκως ἐκτείνεται δίκτυα πτερωτοῖς.	for nets are not without cause spread for birds.
18	18
αὐτοὶ γὰρ οἱ φόνου μετέχοντες θησαυρίζουσιν ἑαυτοῖς κακά, ἡ δὲ καταστροφὴ ἀνδρῶν παρανόμων κακή.	For they that are concerned in murder store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of transgressors is evil.
19	19
αὗται αἱ ὁδοί εἰσι πάντων τῶν συντελούντων τὰ ἄνομα· τῇ γὰρ ἀσεβείᾳ τὴν ἑαυτῶν ψυχὴν ἀφαιροῦνται.	These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life.

Σοφία ἐν ἐξόδοις ὑμνεῖται, ἐν δὲ πλατείαις παρρησίαν ἄγει·	Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly.
21	21
ἐπ᾿ ἄκρων τειχέων κηρύσσεται, ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις δυναστῶν παρεδρεύει, ἐπὶ δὲ πύλαις πόλεως θαρροῦσα λέγει·	And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says,

ὅσον ἂν χρόνον ἄκακοι ἔχωνται τῆς δικαιοσύνης, οὐκ αἰσχυνθήσονται· οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες, τῆς ὕβρεως ὄντες ἐπιθυμηταί, ἀσεβεῖς γενόμενοι ἐμίσησαν αἴσθησιν	So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs.

καὶ ὑπεύθυνοι ἐγένοντο ἐλέγχοις, ἰδοὺ προήσομαι ὑμῖν ἐμῆς πνοῆς ρῆσιν, διδάξω δὲ ὑμᾶς τὸν ἐμὸν λόγον.	Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech.

ἐπειδὴ ἐκάλουν καὶ οὐχ ὑπηκούσατε καὶ ἐξέτεινα λόγους καὶ οὐ προσείχετε,	Since I called, and ye did not hearken; and I spoke at length, and ye gave no heed;
25	25
ἀλλὰ ἀκύρους ἐποιεῖτε ἐμᾶς βουλάς, τοῖς δὲ ἐμοῖς ἐλέγχοις οὐ προσείχετε,	but ye set at nought my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs;
26	26
τοιγαροῦν κἀγὼ τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ ἀπωλείᾳ ἐπιγελάσομαι, καταχαροῦμαι δὲ ἡνίκα ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθρος,	therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against you when ruin comes upon you:

καὶ ὡς ἂν ἀφίκηται ὑμῖν ἄφνω θόρυβος, ἡ δὲ καταστροφὴ ὁμοίως καταιγίδι παρῇ, καὶ ὅταν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν θλῖψις καὶ πολιορκία ἢ ὅταν ἔρχηται ὑμῖν ὄλεθρος.	yea when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and your overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you.

ἔσται γὰρ ὅταν ἐπικαλέσησθέ με, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ εἰσακούσομαι ὑμῶν· ζητήσουσί με κακοί, καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσουσιν·	For it shall be that when ye call upon me, I will not hearken to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find me.

ἐμίσησαν γὰρ σοφίαν, τὸν δὲ λόγον τοῦ Κυρίου οὐ προείλαντο,	For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord:
30	30
οὐδὲ ἤθελον ἐμαῖς προσέχειν βουλαῖς, ἐμυκτήριζον δὲ ἐμοὺς ἐλέγχους.	neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs.
31	31
τοιγαροῦν ἔδονται τῆς ἑαυτῶν ὁδοῦ τοὺς καρποὺς καὶ τῆς ἑαυτῶν ἀσεβείας πλησθήσονται·	Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness.
32	32
ἀνθ᾿ ὧν γὰρ ἠδίκουν νηπίους, φονευθήσονται, καὶ ἐξετασμὸς ἀσεβεῖς ὀλεῖ.	For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly.
33	33
ὁ δὲ ἐμοῦ ἀκούων κατασκηνώσει ἐπ᾿ ἐλπίδι καὶ ἡσυχάσει ἀφόβως ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ.	But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil.
Κεφάλαιο 2	Chapter 2

1	1
ΥΙΕ, ἐὰν δεξάμενος ρῆσιν ἐμῆς ἐντολῆς κρύψῃς παρὰ σεαυτῷ,	My son, if thou wilt receive the utterance of my commandment, and hide it with thee;
2	2
ὑπακούσεται σοφία τὸ οὖς σου, καὶ παραβαλεῖς καρδίαν σου εἰς σύνεσιν, παραβαλεῖς δὲ αὐτὴν ἐπὶ νουθέτησιν τῷ υἱῷ σου.	thine ear shall hearken to wisdom; thou shalt also apply thine heart to understanding, and shalt apply it to the instruction of thy son.

ἐὰν γὰρ τὴν σοφίαν ἐπικαλέσῃ καὶ τῇ συνέσει δῷς φωνήν σου, τὴν δὲ αἴσθησιν ζητήσῃς μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ,	For if thou shalt call to wisdom, and utter thy voice for understanding;

καὶ ἐὰν ζητήσῃς αὐτὴν ὡς ἀργύριον καὶ ὡς θησαυροὺς ἐξερευνήσῃς αὐτήν,	and if thou shalt seek it as silver, and search diligently for it as for treasures;
5	5
τότε συνήσεις φόβον Κυρίου καὶ ἐπίγνωσιν Θεοῦ εὑρήσεις.	then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.
6	6
ὅτι Κύριος δίδωσι σοφίαν, καὶ ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ γνῶσις καὶ σύνεσις·	For the Lord gives wisdom; and from his presence come knowledge and understanding,
7	7
καὶ θησαυρίζει τοῖς κατορθοῦσι σωτηρίαν, ὑπερασπιεῖ τὴν πορείαν αὐτῶν	and he treasures up salvation for them that walk uprightly: he will protect their way;
8	8
τοῦ φυλάξαι ὁδοὺς δικαιωμάτων καὶ ὁδὸν εὐλαβουμένων αὐτὸν διαφυλάξει.	that he may guard the righteous ways: and he will preserve the way of them that fear him.
9	9
τότε συνήσεις δικαιοσύνην καὶ κρίμα καὶ κατορθώσεις πάντας ἄξονας ἀγαθούς.	Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment; and shalt direct all thy course aright.
10	10
ἐὰν γὰρ ἔλθῃ ἡ σοφία εἰς σὴν διάνοιαν, ἡ δὲ αἴσθησις τῇ σῇ ψυχῇ καλὴ εἶναι δόξῃ,	For if wisdom shall come into thine understanding, and discernment shall seem pleasing to thy soul,

βουλὴ καλὴ φυλάξει σε, ἔννοια δὲ ὁσία τηρήσει σε,	good counsel shall guard thee, and holy understanding shall keep thee;
12	12
ἵνα ρύσηταί σε ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ κακῆς καὶ ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς λαλοῦντος μηδὲν πιστόν.	to deliver thee from the evil way, and from the man that speaks nothing faithfully.
13	13
ὦ οἱ ἐγκαταλείποντες ὁδοὺς εὐθείας τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ἐν ὁδοῖς σκότους·	Alas for those who forsake right paths, to walk in ways of darkness;
14	14
οἱ εὐφραινόμενοι ἐπὶ κακοῖς καὶ χαίροντες ἐπὶ διαστροφῇ κακῆ·	who rejoice in evils, and delight in wicked perverseness;
15	15
ὧν αἱ τρίβοι σκολίαι καὶ καμπύλαι αἱ τροχιαὶ αὐτῶν	whose paths are crooked, and their courses winding;
16	16
τοῦ μακράν σε ποιῆσαι ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ εὐθείας καὶ ἀλλότριον τῆς δικαίας γνώμης.	to remove thee far from the straight way, and to estrange thee from a righteous purpose. My son, let not evil counsel overtake thee,
17	17
υἱέ, μή σὲ καταλάβῃ κακὴ βουλή, ἡ ἀπολιποῦσα διδασκαλίαν νεότητος καὶ διαθήκην θείαν ἐπιλελησμένη·	of her who has forsaken the instruction of her youth, and forgotten the covenant of God.
18	18
ἔθετο γὰρ παρὰ τῷ θανάτῳ τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς καὶ παρὰ τῷ ἅδῃ μετὰ τῶν γηγενῶν τοὺς ἄξονας αὐτῆς.	For she has fixed her house near death, and guided her wheels near Hades with the giants.
19	19
πάντες οἱ πορευόμενοι ἐν αὐτῇ οὐκ ἀναστρέψουσιν, οὐδὲ μὴ καταλάβωσι τρίβους εὐθείας· οὐ γὰρ καταλαμβάνονται ὑπὸ ἐνιαυτῶν ζωῆς.	None that go by her shall return, neither shall they take hold of right paths, for they are not apprehended of the years of life.
20	20
εἰ γὰρ ἐπορεύοντο τρίβους ἀγαθάς, εὕροσαν ἂν τρίβους δικαιοσύνης λείας.	For had they gone in good paths, they would have found the paths of righteousness easy.
21	21
χρηστοὶ ἔσονται οἰκήτορες γῆς, ἄκακοι δὲ ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ· ὅτι εὐθεῖς κατασκηνώσουσι γῆν, καὶ ὅσιοι ὑπολειφθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ.	For the upright shall dwell in the earth, and the holy shall be left behind in it.
22	22
ὁδοὶ ἀσεβῶν ἐκ γῆς ὀλοῦνται, οἱ δὲ παράνομοι ἐξωσθήσονται ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς.	The paths of the ungodly shall perish out of the earth, and transgressors shall be driven away from it.
Κεφάλαιο 3	Chapter 3

1	1
ΥΙΕ, ἐμῶν νομίμων μὴ ἐπιλανθάνου, τὰ δὲ ρήματά μου τηρείτω σὴ καρδία·	My son, forget not my laws; but let thine heart keep my words:
2	2
μῆκος γὰρ βίου καὶ ἔτη ζωῆς καὶ εἰρήνην προσθήσουσί σοι.	for length of existence, and years of life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3	3
ἐλεημοσύναι καὶ πίστεις μὴ ἐκλιπέτωσάν σε, ἄφαψαι δὲ αὐτὰς ἐπὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ, καὶ εὑρήσεις χάριν·	Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; but bind them about thy neck:

καὶ προνοοῦ καλὰ ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ἀνθρώπων.	so shalt thou find favour: and do thou provide things honest in the sight of the Lord, and of men.
5	5
ἴσθι πεποιθὼς ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἐπὶ Θεῷ ἐπὶ δὲ σῇ σοφίᾳ μὴ ἐπαίρου·	Trust in God with all thine heart; and be not exalted in thine own wisdom.
6	6
ἐν πάσαις ὁδοῖς σου γνώριζε αὐτήν, ἵνα ὀρθοτομῇ τὰς ὁδούς σου, ὁ δὲ πούς σου μὴ προσκόψῃ.	In all thy ways acquaint thyself with her, that she may rightly direct thy paths.

μὴ ἴσθι φρόνιμος παρὰ σεαυτῷ, φοβοῦ δὲ τὸν Θεὸν καὶ ἔκκλινε ἀπὸ παντὸς κακοῦ·	Be not wise in thine own conceit; but fear God, and depart from all evil.
8	8
τότε ἴασις ἔσται τῷ σώματί σου καὶ ἐπιμέλεια τοῖς ὀστέοις σου.	Then shall there be health to thy body, and good keeping to thy bones.
9	9
τίμα τὸν Κύριον ἀπὸ σῶν δικαίων πόνων καὶ ἀπάρχου αὐτῷ ἀπὸ σῶν καρπῶν δικαιοσύνης,	Honour the Lord with thy just labours, and give him the first of thy fruits of righteousness:
10	10
ἵνα πίμπληται τὰ ταμιεῖά σου πλησμονῆς σίτῳ, οἴνῳ δὲ αἱ ληνοί σου ἐκβλύζωσιν.	that thy storehouses may be completely filled with corn, and that thy presses may burst forth with wine.
11	11
Υἱέ, μὴ ὀλιγώρει παιδείας Κυρίου, μηδὲ ἐκλύου ὑπ᾿ αὐτοῦ ἐλεγχόμενος·	My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
12	12
ὃν γὰρ ἀγαπᾷ Κύριος παιδεύει, μαστιγοῖ δὲ πάντα υἱὸν ὃν παραδέχεται.	for whom the Lord loves, he rebukes, and scourges every son whom he receives.
13	13
μακάριος ἄνθρωπος ὃς εὗρε σοφίαν καὶ θνητὸς ὃς εἶδε φρόνησιν·	Blessed is the man who has found wisdom, and the mortal who knows prudence.
14	14
κρεῖσσον γὰρ αὐτὴν ἐμπορεύεσθαι ἢ χρυσίου καὶ ἀργυρίου θησαυρούς.	For it is better to traffic for her, than for treasures of gold and silver.
15	15
τιμιωτέρα δέ ἐστι λίθων πολυτελῶν, οὐκ ἀντιτάξεται αὐτῇ οὐδὲν πονηρόν· εὔγνωστός ἐστι πᾶσι τοῖς ἐγγίζουσιν αὐτῇ, πᾶν δὲ τίμιον οὐκ ἄξιον αὐτῆς ἐστι.	And she is more valuable than precious stones: no evil thing shall resist her: she is well known to all that approach her, and no precious thing is equal to her in value.

μῆκος γὰρ βίου καὶ ἔτη ζωῆς ἐν τῇ δεξιᾷ αὐτῆς, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀριστερᾷ αὐτῆς πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα· ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτῆς ἐκπορεύεται δικαιοσύνη, νόμον δὲ καὶ ἔλεον ἐπὶ γλώσσης φορεῖ.	For length of existence and years of life are in her right hand; and in her left hand are wealth and glory:
17	17
αἱ ὁδοὶ αὐτῆς ὁδοὶ καλαί, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ τρίβοι αὐτῆς ἐν εἰρήνῃ·	Her ways are good ways, and all her paths are peaceful.
18	18
ξύλον ζωῆς ἐστι πᾶσι τοῖς ἀντεχομένοις αὐτῆς, καὶ τοῖς ἐπερειδομένοις ἐπ᾿ αὐτὴν ὡς ἐπὶ Κύριον ἀσφαλής.	She is a tree of life to all that lay hold upon her; and she is a secure help to all that stay themselves on her, as on the Lord.
19	19
ὁ Θεὸς τῇ σοφίᾳ ἐθεμελίωσε τὴν γῆν, ἡτοίμασε δὲ οὐρανοὺς φρονήσει·	God by wisdom founded the earth, and by prudence he prepared the heavens.
20	20
ἐν αἰσθήσει ἄβυσσοι ἐρράγησαν, νέφη δὲ ἐρρύησαν δρόσους.	By understanding were the depths broken up, and the clouds dropped water.
21	21
Υἱέ, μὴ παραρρυῇς, τήρησον δὲ ἐμὴν βουλὴν καὶ ἔννοιαν,	My son, let them not pass from thee, but keep my counsel and understanding:
22	22
ἵνα ζήσῃ ἡ ψυχή σου, καὶ χάρις ᾖ περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ. ἔσται δὲ ἴασις ταῖς σαρξί σου καὶ ἐπιμέλεια τοῖς σοῖς ὀστέοις,	that thy soul may live, and that there may be grace round thy neck;

ἵνα πορεύῃ πεποιθὼς ἐν εἰρήνῃ πάσας τὰς ὁδούς σου, ὁ δὲ πούς σου οὐ μὴ προσκόψῃ·	that thou mayest go confidently in peace in all thy ways, and that thy foot may not stumble.
24	24
ἐὰν γὰρ κάθῃ, ἄφοβος ἔσῃ, ἐὰν δὲ καθεύδῃς, ἡδέως ὑπνώσεις·	For if thou rest, thou shalt be undismayed; and if thou sleep, thou shalt slumber sweetly.
25	25
καὶ οὐ φοβηθήσῃ πτόησιν ἐπελθοῦσαν, οὐδὲ ὁρμὰς ἀσεβῶν ἐπερχομένας·	And thou shalt not be afraid of alarm coming upon thee, neither of approaching attacks of ungodly men.
26	26
ὁ γὰρ Κύριος ἔσται ἐπὶ πασῶν ὁδῶν σου καὶ ἐρείσει σὸν πόδα, ἵνα μὴ σαλευθῇς.	For the Lord shall be over all thy ways, and shall establish thy foot that thou be not moved.
27	27
μὴ ἀπόσχῃ εὖ ποιεῖν ἐνδεῆ, ἡνίκα ἂν ἔχῃ ἡ χείρ σου βοηθεῖν·	Forbear not to do good to the poor, whensoever thy hand may have power to help him.
28	28
μὴ εἴπῃς· ἐπανελθὼν ἐπάνηκε, αὔριον δώσω, δυνατοῦ σου ὄντος εὖ ποιεῖν· οὐ γὰρ οἶδας τί τέξεται ἡ ἐπιοῦσα.	Say not, Come back another time, to-morrow I will give; while thou art able to do him good: for thou knowest not what the next day will bring forth.

μὴ τέκταινε ἐπὶ σὸν φίλον κακὰ παροικοῦντα καὶ πεποιθότα ἐπὶ σοί.	Devise not evil against thy friend, living near thee and trusting in thee.
30	30
μὴ φιλεχθρήσῃς πρὸς ἄνθρωπον μάτην, μήτι σε ἐργάσηται κακόν.	Be not ready to quarrel with a man without a cause, lest he do thee some harm.
31	31
μὴ κτήσῃ κακῶν ἀνδρῶν ὀνείδη, μηδὲ ζηλώσῃς τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν·	Procure not the reproaches of bad men, neither do thou covet their ways.
32	32
ἀκάθαρτος γὰρ ἔναντι Κυρίου πᾶς παράνομος, ἐν δὲ δικαίοις οὐ συνεδριάζει.	For every transgressor is unclean before the Lord; neither does he sit among the righteous.
33	33
κατάρα Θεοῦ ἐν οἴκοις ἀσεβῶν, ἐπαύλεις δὲ δικαίων εὐλογοῦνται.	The curse of God is in the houses of the ungodly; but the habitations of the just are blessed.

Κύριος ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται, ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν.	The Lord resists the proud; but he gives grace to the humble.

δόξαν σοφοὶ κληρονομήσουσιν, οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ὕψωσαν ἀτιμίαν.	The wise shall inherit glory; but the ungodly have exalted their own dishonour.
Κεφάλαιο 4	Chapter 4

ΑΚΟΥΣΑΤΕ, παῖδες, παιδείαν πατρὸς καὶ προσέχετε γνῶναι ἔννοιαν·	Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

δῶρον γὰρ ἀγαθὸν δωροῦμαι ὑμῖν, τὸν ἐμὸν νόμον μὴ ἐγκαταλίπητε.	For I give you a good gift; forsake ye not my law.
3	3
υἱὸς γὰρ ἐγενόμην κἀγὼ πατρὶ ὑπήκοος καὶ ἀγαπώμενος ἐν προσώπῳ μητρός,	For I also was a son obedient to my father, and loved in the sight of my mother:

οἳ ἐδίδασκόν με καὶ ἔλεγον· ἐρειδέτω ὁ ἡμέτερος λόγος εἰς σὴν καρδίαν· φύλασσε ἐντολάς, μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ	who spoke and instructed me, saying, Let our speech be fixed in thine heart, keep our commandments, forget them not:

μηδὲ παρίδῃς ρῆσιν ἐμοῦ στόματος,	and do not neglect the speech of my mouth.

μηδὲ ἐγκαταλίπῃς αὐτήν, καὶ ἀνθέξεταί σου· ἐράσθητι αὐτῆς, καὶ τηρήσει σε·	And forsake it not, and it shall cleave to thee: love it, and it shall keep thee.

περιχαράκωσον αὐτήν, καὶ ὑψώσει σε· τίμησον αὐτήν, ἵνα σε περιλάβῃ,	Secure it, and it shall exalt thee: honour it, that it may embrace thee;
9	9
ἵνα δῷ τῇ σῇ κεφαλῇ στέφανον χαρίτων, στεφάνῳ δὲ τρυφῆς ὑπερασπίσῃ σου.	that it may give unto thy head a crown of graces, and may cover thee with a crown of delight.
10	10
῎Ακουε, υἱέ, καὶ δέξαι ἐμοὺς λόγους, καὶ πληθυνθήσεται ἔτη ζωῆς σου, ἵνα σοι γένωνται πολλαὶ ὁδοὶ βίου·	Hear, my son, and receive my words; and the years of thy life shall be increased, that the resources of thy life may be many.

ὁδοὺς γὰρ σοφίας διδάσκω σε, ἐμβιβάζω δέ σε τροχιαῖς ὀρθαῖς.	For I teach thee the ways of wisdom; and I cause thee to go in right paths.
12	12
ἐὰν γὰρ πορεύῃ, οὐ συγκλεισθήσεταί σου τὰ διαβήματα, ἐὰν δὲ τρέχῃς οὐ κοπιάσεις.	For when thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not be distressed.

ἐπιλαβοῦ ἐμῆς παιδείας, μὴ ἀφῇς, ἀλλὰ φύλαξον αὐτὴν σεαυτῷ εἰς ζωήν σου.	Take hold of my instruction; let it not go,—but keep it for thyself for thy life.
14	14
ὁδοὺς ἀσεβῶν μὴ ἐπέλθῃς, μηδὲ ζηλώσῃς ὁδοὺς παρανόμων·	Go not in the ways of the ungodly, neither covet the ways of transgressors.
15	15
ἐν ᾧ ἂν τόπῳ στρατοπεδεύσωσι, μὴ ἐπέλθῃς ἐκεῖ, ἔκκλινον δὲ ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν καὶ παράλλαξον.	In whatever place they shall pitch their camp, go not thither; but turn from them, and pass away.
16	16
οὐ γὰρ μὴ ὑπνώσωσιν, ἐὰν μὴ κακοποιήσωσιν, ἀφῄρηται ὁ ὕπνος αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐ κοιμῶνται·	For they cannot sleep, unless they have done evil: their sleep is taken away, and they rest not.

οἵδε γὰρ σιτοῦνται σῖτα ἀσεβείας, οἴνῳ δὲ παρανόμῳ μεθύσκονται.	For these live upon the bread of ungodliness, and are drunken with wine of transgression.
18	18
αἱ δὲ ὁδοὶ τῶν δικαίων ὁμοίως φωτὶ λάμπουσι, προπορεύονται καὶ φωτίζουσιν, ἕως κατορθώσῃ ἡ ἡμέρα·	But the ways of the righteous shine like light; they go on and shine, until the day be fully come.
19	19
αἱ δὲ ὁδοὶ τῶν ἀσεβῶν σκοτειναί, οὐκ οἴδασι πῶς προσκόπτουσιν.	But the ways of the ungodly are dark; they know not how they stumble.
20	20
Υἱέ, ἐμῇ ρήσει πρόσεχε, τοῖς δὲ ἐμοῖς λόγοις παράβαλλε σὸν οὖς,	My son, attend to my speech; and apply thine ear to my words:
21	21
ὅπως μὴ ἐκλίπωσί σε αἱ πηγαί σου, φύλασσε αὐτὰς ἐν καρδίᾳ·	that thy fountains may not fail thee; keep them in thine heart.
22	22
ζωὴ γάρ ἐστι τοῖς εὑρίσκουσιν αὐτὰς καὶ πάσῃ σαρκὶ ἴασις.	For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23	23
πάσῃ φυλακῇ τήρει σὴν καρδίαν, ἐκ γὰρ τούτων ἔξοδοι ζωῆς.	Keep thine heart with the utmost care; for out of these are the issues of life.
24	24
περίελε σεαυτοῦ σκολιὸν στόμα καὶ ἄδικα χείλη μακρὰν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἄπωσαι.	Remove from thee a froward mouth, and put far away from thee unjust lips.
25	25
οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὀρθὰ βλεπέτωσαν, τὰ δὲ βλέφαρά σου νευέτω δίκαια.	Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids assent to just things.

ὀρθὰς τροχιὰς ποίει σοῖς ποσὶ καὶ τὰς ὁδούς σου κατεύθυνε.	Make straight paths for thy feet, and order thy ways aright.

μὴ ἐκκλίνῃς εἰς τὰ δεξιὰ μηδὲ εἰς τὰ ἀριστερά, ἀπόστρεψον δὲ σὸν πόδα ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ κακῆς· ὁδοὺς γὰρ τὰς ἐκ δεξιῶν οἶδεν ὁ Θεός, διεστραμμέναι δέ εἰσιν αἱ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν· αὐτὸς δὲ ὀρθὰς ποιήσει τὰς τροχιάς σου, τὰς δὲ πορείας σου ἐν εἰρήνῃ προάξει.	Turn not aside to the right hand nor to the left, but turn away thy foot from an evil way:
Κεφάλαιο 5	Chapter 5

ΥΙΕ, ἐμῇ σοφίᾳ πρόσεχε, ἐμοῖς δὲ λόγοις παράβαλλε σὸν οὗς,	My son, attend to my wisdom, and apply thine ear to my words;

ἵνα φυλάξῃς ἔννοιαν ἀγαθήν· αἴσθησις δὲ ἐμῶν χειλέων ἐντέλλεταί σοι.	that thou mayest keep good understanding, and the discretion of my lips gives thee a charge. Give no heed to a worthless woman;
3	3
μὴ πρόσεχε φαύλῃ γυναικί· μέλι γὰρ ἀποστάζει ἀπὸ χειλέων γυναικὸς πόρνης, ἣ πρὸς καιρὸν λιπαίνει σὸν φάρυγγα,	for honey drops from the lips of a harlot, who for a season pleases thy palate:

ὕστερον μέντοι πικρότερον χολῆς εὑρήσεις καὶ ἠκονημένον μᾶλλον μαχαίρας διστόμου.	but afterwards thou wilt find her more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword.

τῆς γὰρ ἀφροσύνης οἱ πόδες κατάγουσι τοὺς χρωμένους αὐτῇ μετὰ θανάτου εἰς τὸν ᾅδην, τὰ δὲ ἴχνη αὐτῆς οὐκ ἐρείδεται·	For the feet of folly lead those who deal with her down to the grave with death; and her steps are not established.

ὁδοὺς γὰρ ζωῆς οὐκ ἐπέρχεται, σφαλεραὶ δὲ αἱ τροχιαὶ αὐτῆς καὶ οὐκ εὔγνωστοι.	For she goes not upon the paths of life; but her ways are slippery, and not easily known.
7	7
νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ μὴ ἀκύρους ποιήσῃς ἐμοὺς λόγους.	Now then, my son, hear me, and make not my words of none effect.
8	8
μακρὰν ποίησον ἀπ᾿ αὐτῆς σὴν ὁδόν, μὴ ἐγγίσῃς πρὸς θύραις οἴκων αὐτῆς,	Remove thy way far from her; draw not near to the doors of her house:
9	9
ἵνα μὴ πρόῃ ἄλλοις ζωήν σου καὶ σὸν βίον ἀνελεήμοσιν·	lest thou give away thy life to others, and thy substance to the merciless:
10	10
ἵνα μὴ πλησθῶσιν ἀλλότριοι σῆς ἰσχύος, οἱ δὲ σοὶ πόνοι εἰς οἴκους ἀλλοτρίων ἔλθωσι	lest strangers be filled with thy strength, and thy labours come into the houses of strangers;
11	11
καὶ μεταμεληθήσῃ ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων, ἡνίκα ἂν κατατριβῶσι σάρκες σωματός σου,	and thou repent at last, when the flesh of thy body is consumed,
12	12
καὶ ἐρεῖς· πῶς ἐμίσησα παιδείαν, καὶ ἐλέγχους ἐξέκλινεν ἡ καρδία μου;	and thou shalt say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart avoided reproofs!
13	13
οὐκ ἤκουον φωνὴν παιδεύοντός με καὶ διδάσκοντός με, οὐδὲ παρέβαλλον τὸ οὖς μου·	I heard not the voice of him that instructed me, and taught me, neither did I apply mine ear.
14	14
παρ᾿ ὀλίγον ἐγενόμην ἐν παντὶ κακῷ ἐν μέσῳ ἐκκλησίας καὶ συναγωγῆς.	I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
15	15
πῖνε ὕδατα ἀπὸ σῶν ἀγγείων καὶ ἀπὸ σῶν φρεάτων πηγῆς.	Drink waters out of thine own vessels, and out of thine own springing wells.
16	16
μὴ ὑπερεκχείσθω σοι ὕδατα ἐκ τῆς σῆς πηγῆς, εἰς δὲ σὰς πλατείας διαπορευέσθω τὰ σὰ ὕδατα·	Let not waters out of thy fountain be spilt by thee, but let thy waters go into thy streets.
17	17
ἔστω σοι μόνῳ ὑπάρχοντα, καὶ μηδεὶς ἀλλότριος μετασχέτω σοι·	Let them be only thine own, and let no stranger partake with thee.
18	18
ἡ πηγή σου τοῦ ὕδατος ἔστω σοι ἰδία, καὶ συνευφραίνου μετὰ γυναικὸς τῆς ἐκ νεότητός σου.	Let thy fountain of water be truly thine own; and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19	19
ἔλαφος φιλίας καὶ πῶλος σῶν χαρίτων ὁμιλείτω σοι· ἡ δὲ ἰδία ἡγείσθω σου καὶ συνέστω σοι ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ, ἐν γὰρ τῇ ταύτης φιλίᾳ συμπεριφερόμενος πολλοστὸς ἔσῃ.	Let thy loving hart and thy graceful colt company with thee, and let her be considered thine own, and be with thee at all times; for ravished with her love thou shalt be greatly increased.
20	20
μὴ πολὺς ἴσθι πρὸς ἀλλοτρίαν, μηδὲ συνέχου ἀγκάλαις τῆς μὴ ἰδίας·	Be not intimate with a strange woman, neither fold thyself in the arms of a woman not thine own.
21	21
ἐνώπιον γάρ εἰσι τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὀφθαλμῶν ὁδοὶ ἀνδρός, εἰς δὲ πάσας τὰς τροχιὰς αὐτοῦ σκοπεύει.	For the ways of a man are before the eyes of God, and he looks on all his paths.
22	22
παρονομίαι ἄνδρα ἀγρεύουσι, σειραῖς δὲ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτιῶν ἕκαστος σφίγγεται·	Iniquities ensnare a man, and every one is bound in the chains of his own sins.
23	23
οὗτος τελευτᾷ μετὰ ἀπαιδεύτων, ἐκ δὲ πλήθους τῆς ἑαυτοῦ βιότητος ἐξερρίφη καὶ ἀπώλετο δι᾿ ἀφροσύνην.	Such a man dies with the uninstructed; and he is cast forth from the abundance of his own substance, and has perished through folly.
Κεφάλαιο 6	Chapter 6

ΥΙΕ, ἐὰν ἐγγυήσῃ σὸν φίλον, παραδώσεις σὴν χεῖρα ἐχθρῷ·	My son, if thou become surety for thy friend, thou shalt deliver thine hand to an enemy.
2	2
παγὶς γὰρ ἰσχυρὰ ἀνδρὶ τὰ ἴδια χείλη, καὶ ἁλίσκεται χείλεσιν ἰδίου στόματος.	For a man's own lips become a strong snare to him, and he is caught with the lips of his own mouth.
3	3
ποίει, υἱέ, ἃ ἐγώ σοι ἐντέλλομαι, καὶ σώζου· ἥκεις γὰρ εἰς χεῖρας κακῶν διὰ σὸν φίλον. ἴσθι μὴ ἐκλυόμενος, παρόξυνε δὲ καὶ τὸν φίλον σου, ὃν ἐνεγγυήσω.	My son, do what I command thee, and deliver thyself; for on thy friend's account thou art come into the power of evil men: faint not, but stir up even thy friend for whom thou art become surety.

μὴ δῷς ὕπνον σοῖς ὄμμασι, μηδὲ ἐπινυστάξῃς σοῖς βλεφάροις,	Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber with thine eyelids;
5	5
ἵνα σώζῃ ὥσπερ δορκὰς ἐκ βρόχων καὶ ὥσπερ ὄρνεον ἐκ παγίδος.	that thou mayest deliver thyself as a doe out of the toils, and as a bird out of a snare.

῎Ιθι πρὸς τὸν μύρμηκα, ὦ ὀκνηρέ, καὶ ζήλωσον ἰδὼν τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ γενοῦ ἐκείνου σοφώτερος·	Go to the ant, O sluggard; and see, and emulate his ways, and become wiser than he.

ἐκείνῳ γὰρ γεωργίου μὴ ὑπάρχοντος, μηδὲ τὸν ἀναγκάζοντα ἔχων, μηδὲ ὑπὸ δεσπότην ὤν,	For whereas he has no husbandry, nor any one to compel him, and is under no master,

ἑτοιμάζεται θέρους τὴν τροφὴν πολλήν τε ἐν τῷ ἀμητῷ ποιεῖται τὴν παράθεσιν. 8α ἢ πορεύθητι πρὸς τὴν μέλισσαν καὶ μάθε ὡς ἐργάτις ἐστὶ τήν τε ἐργασίαν ὡς σεμνὴν ποιεῖται· 8β ἦς τοὺς πόνους βασιλεῖς καὶ ἰδιῶται πρὸς ὑγίειαν προσφέρονται· ποθεινὴ δέ ἐστι πᾶσι καὶ ἐπίδοξος· 8γ καί περ οὖσα τῇ ρώμῃ ἀσθενής, τὴν σοφίαν τιμήσασα προήχθη.	he prepares food for himself in the summer, and lays by abundant store in harvest.

ἕως τίνος, ὀκνηρέ, κατάκεισαι; πότε δὲ ἐξ ὕπνου ἐγερθήσῃ;	How long wilt thou lie, O sluggard? and when wilt thou awake out of sleep?
10	10
ὀλίγον μὲν ὑπνοῖς, ὀλίγον δὲ κάθησαι, μικρὸν δὲ νυστάζεις, ὀλίγον δὲ ἐναγκαλίζῃ χερσὶ στήθη·	Thou sleepest a little, and thou restest a little, and thou slumberest a short time, and thou foldest thine arms over thy breast a little.

εἶτ᾿ ἐμπαραγίνεταί σοι ὥσπερ κακὸς ὁδοιπόρος ἡ πενία καὶ ἡ ἔνδεια ὥσπερ ἀγαθὸς δρομεύς. 11α ἐὰν δὲ ἄοκνος ᾖς, ἥξει ὥσπερ πηγὴ ὁ ἀμητός σου, ἡ δὲ ἔνδεια ὥσπερ κακὸς δρομεὺς ἀπαυτομολήσει.	Then poverty comes upon thee as an evil traveller, and want as a swift courier:

᾿Ανὴρ ἄφρων καὶ παράνομος πορεύεται ὁδοὺς οὐκ ἀγαθάς·	A foolish man and a transgressor goes in ways that are not good.
13	13
ὁ δ᾿ αὐτὸς ἐννεύει ὀφθαλμῷ, σημαίνει δὲ ποδί, διδάσκει δὲ ἐννεύμασι δακτύλων.	And the same winks with the eye, and makes a sign with his foot, and teaches with the beckonings of his fingers.
14	14
διεστραμμένῃ καρδίᾳ τεκταίνεται κακά, ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ ὁ τοιοῦτος ταραχὰς συνίστησι πόλει.	His perverse heart devises evils: at all times such a one causes troubles to a city.
15	15
διὰ τοῦτο ἐξαπίνης ἔρχεται ἡ ἀπώλεια αὐτοῦ, διακοπὴ καὶ συντριβὴ ἀνίατος·	Therefore his destruction shall come suddenly; overthrow and irretrievable ruin.
16	16
ὅτι χαίρει πᾶσιν, οἷς μισεῖ ὁ Θεός, συντρίβεται δὲ δι᾿ ἀκαθαρσίαν ψυχῆς.	For he rejoices in all things which God hates, and he is ruined by reason of impurity of soul.
17	17
ὀφθαλμὸς ὑβριστοῦ, γλῶσσα ἄδικος, χεῖρες ἐκχέουσαι αἷμα δικαίου	The eye of the haughty, a tongue unjust, hands shedding the blood of the just;
18	18
καὶ καρδία τεκταινομένη λογισμοὺς κακοὺς καὶ πόδες ἐπισπεύδοντες κακοποιεῖν.	and a heart devising evil thoughts, and feet hastening to do evil,—are hateful to God.
19	19
ἐκκαίει ψεύδη μάρτυς ἄδικος καὶ ἐπιπέμπει κρίσεις ἀνὰ μέσον ἀδελφῶν.	An unjust witness kindles falsehoods, and brings on quarrels between brethren.
20	20
Υἱέ, φύλασσε νόμους πατρός σου καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ θεσμοὺς μητρός σου·	My son, keep the laws of thy father, and reject not the ordinances of thy mother:
21	21
ἄφαψαι δὲ αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ σῇ ψυχῇ διαπαντὸς καὶ ἐγκλοίωσαι περὶ σῷ τραχήλῳ.	but bind them upon thy soul continually, and hang them as a chain about thy neck.
22	22
ἡνίκα ἂν περιπατῇς, ἐπάγου αὐτὴν καὶ μετὰ σοῦ ἔστω· ὡς δ᾿ ἂν καθεύδῃς, φυλασσέτω σε, ἵνα ἐγειρομένῳ συλλαλῇ σοι.	Whensoever thou walkest, lead this along and let it be with thee; and when thou sleepest let it keep thee; that it may talk with thee when thou wakest.

ὅτι λύχνος ἐντολὴ νόμου καὶ φῶς, ὁδὸς ζωῆς καὶ ἔλεγχος καὶ παιδεία	For the commandment of the law is a lamp and a light; a way of life; reproof also and correction:

τοῦ διαφυλάσσειν σὲ ἀπὸ γυναικὸς ὑπάνδρου καὶ ἀπὸ διαβολῆς γλώσσης ἀλλοτρίας.	to keep thee continually from a married woman, and from the calumny of a strange tongue.
25	25
μή σε νικήσῃ κάλλους ἐπιθυμία, μηδὲ ἀγρευθῇς σοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς, μηδὲ συναρπασθῇς ἀπὸ τῶν αὐτῆς βλεφάρων·	Let not the desire of beauty overcome thee, neither be thou caught by thine eyes, neither be captivated with her eyelids.

τιμὴ γὰρ πόρνης ὅση καὶ ἑνὸς ἄρτου, γυνὴ δὲ ἀνδρῶν τιμίας ψυχὰς ἀγρεύει.	For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf; and a woman hunts for the precious souls of men.
27	27
ἀποδήσει τις πῦρ ἐν κόλπῳ, τὰ δὲ ἱμάτια οὐ κατακαύσει;	Shall any one bind fire in his bosom, and not burn his garments?

ἢ περιπατήσει τις ἐπ᾿ ἀνθράκων πυρός, τοὺς δὲ πόδας οὐ κατακαύσει;	or will any one walk on coals of fire, and not burn his feet?
29	29
οὕτως ὁ εἰσελθὼν πρὸς γυναῖκα ὕπανδρον, οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται, οὐδὲ πᾶς ὁ ἁπτόμενος αὐτῆς.	So is he that goes in to a married woman; he shall not be held guiltless, neither any one that touches her.

οὐ θαυμαστὸν ἐὰν ἁλῷ τις κλέπτων, κλέπτει γὰρ ἵνα ἐμπλήσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν πεινῶν·	It is not to be wondered at if one should be taken stealing, for he steals that when hungry he may satisfy his soul:

ἐὰν δὲ ἁλῷ, ἀποτίσει ἑπταπλάσια καὶ πάντα τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ δοὺς ρύσεται ἑαυτόν.	but if he should be taken, he shall repay sevenfold, and shall deliver himself by giving all his goods.

ὁ δὲ μοιχὸς δι᾿ ἔνδειαν φρενῶν ἀπώλειαν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ περιποιεῖται,	But the adulterer through want of sense procures destruction to his soul.
33	33
ὀδύνας τε καὶ ἀτιμίας ὑποφέρει, τὸ δὲ ὄνειδος αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἐξαλειφθήσεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.	He endures both pain and disgrace, and his reproach shall never be wiped off.

μεστὸς γὰρ ζήλου θυμὸς ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς· οὐ φείσεται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως,	For the soul of her husband is full of jealousy: he will not spare in the day of vengeance.

οὐκ ἀνταλλάξεται οὐδενὸς λύτρου τὴν ἔχθραν, οὐδὲ μὴ διαλυθῇ πολλῶν δώρων.	He will not forego his enmity for any ransom: neither will he be reconciled for many gifts.
Κεφάλαιο 7	Chapter 7

ΥΙΕ, φύλασσε ἐμοὺς λόγους, τὰς δὲ ἐμὰς ἐντολὰς κρύψον παρὰ σεαυτῷ. υἱέ, τίμα τὸν Κύριον, καὶ ἰσχύσεις, πλὴν δὲ αὐτοῦ μὴ φοβοῦ ἄλλον.	My son, keep my words, and hide with thee my commandments.

φύλαξον ἐμὰς ἐντολάς, καὶ βιώσεις, τοὺς δὲ ἐμοὺς λόγους ὥσπερ κόρας ὀμμάτων·	keep my commandments, and thou shalt live; and keep my words as the pupils of thine eyes.

περίθου δὲ αὐτοὺς σοῖς δακτύλοις, ἐπίγραψον δὲ ἐπὶ τὸ πλάτος τῆς καρδίας σου.	And bind them on thy fingers, and write them on the table of thine heart.

εἶπον τὴν σοφίαν σὴν ἀδελφὴν εἶναι, τὴν δὲ φρόνησιν γνώριμον περιποίησαι σεαυτῷ·	Say that wisdom is thy sister, and gain prudence as an acquaintance for thyself;

ἵνα σε τηρήσῃ ἀπὸ γυναικὸς ἀλλοτρίας καὶ πονηρᾶς, ἐάν σε λόγοις τοῖς πρὸς χάριν ἐμβάλληται.	that she may keep thee from the strange and wicked woman, if she should assail thee with flattering words.

ἀπὸ γὰρ θυρίδος ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτῆς εἰς τὰς πλατείας παρακύπτουσα,	For she looks from a window out of her house into the streets, at one whom she may see of the senseless ones, a young man void of understanding,

ὃν ἂν ἴδῃ τῶν ἀφρόνων τέκνων νεανίαν ἐνδεῆ φρενῶν,	passing by the corner in the passages near her house,

παραπορευόμενον παρὰ γωνίαν ἐν διόδοις οἴκων αὐτῆς καὶ λαλοῦντα	and speaking, in the dark of the evening,
9	9
ἐν σκότει ἑσπερινῷ, ἡνίκα ἂν ἡσυχία νυκτερινὴ ᾖ καὶ γνοφώδης,	when there happens to be the stillness of night and of darkness:

ἡ δὲ γυνὴ συναντᾷ αὐτῷ, εἶδος ἔχουσα πορνικόν, ἣ ποιεῖ νέων ἐξίπτασθαι καρδίας.	and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter.
11	11
ἀνεπτερωμένη δέ ἐστι καὶ ἄσωτος, ἐν οἴκῳ δὲ οὐχ ἡσυχάζουσιν οἱ πόδες αὐτῆς·	And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home.

χρόνον γάρ τινα ἔξω ρέμβεται, χρόνον δὲ ἐν πλατείαις παρὰ πᾶσαν γωνίαν ἐνεδρεύει.	For at one time she wanders without, and at another time she lies in wait in the streets, at every corner.

εἶτα ἐπιλαβομένη ἐφίλησεν αὐτόν, ἀναιδεῖ δὲ προσώπῳ προσεῖπεν αὐτῷ·	Then she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him,

θυσία εἰρηνική μοί ἐστι, σήμερον ἀποδίδωμι τὰς εὐχάς μου·	I have a peace-offering; to-day I pay my vows:
15	15
ἕνεκα τούτου ἐξῆλθον εἰς συνάντησίν σοι, ποθοῦσα τὸ σὸν πρόσωπον εὕρηκά σε.	therefore I came forth to meet thee, desiring thy face; and I have found thee.
16	16
κειρίαις τέτακα τὴν κλίνην μου, ἀμφιτάποις δὲ ἔστρωκα τοῖς ἀπ᾿ Αἰγύπτου·	I have spread my bed with sheets, and I have covered it with double tapestry from Egypt.

διέρρακα τὴν κοίτην μου κροκίνῳ, τὸν δὲ οἶκόν μου κινναμώμῳ·	I have sprinkled my couch with saffron, and my house with cinnamon.
18	18
ἐλθὲ καὶ ἀπολαύσωμεν φιλίας ἕως ὄρθρου, δεῦρο καὶ ἐγκυλισθῶμεν ἔρωτι·	Come, and let us enjoy love until the morning; come, and let us embrace in love.
19	19
οὐ γὰρ πάρεστιν ὁ ἀνήρ μου ἐν οἴκῳ, πεπόρευται δὲ ὁδὸν μακρὰν	For my husband is not at home, but is gone on a long journey,

ἔνδεσμον ἀργυρίου λαβὼν ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ, δι᾿ ἡμερῶν πολλῶν ἐπανήξει εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.	having taken in his hand a bundle of money: after many days he will return to his house.

ἀπεπλάνησε δὲ αὐτὸν πολλῇ ὁμιλίᾳ βρόχοις τε τοῖς ἀπὸ χειλέων ἐξώκειλεν αὐτόν.	So with much converse she prevailed on him to go astray, and with the snares of her lips she forced him from the right path.

ὁ δὲ ἐπηκολούθησεν αὐτῇ κεπφωθείς, ὥσπερ δὲ βοῦς ἐπὶ σφαγὴν ἄγεται καὶ ὥσπερ κύων ἐπὶ δεσμοὺς	And he followed her, being gently led on, and that as an ox is led to the slaughter, and as a dog to bonds, or as a hart shot in the liver with an arrow:

ἢ ὡς ἔλαφος τοξεύματι πεπληγὼς εἰς τὸ ἧπαρ, σπεύδει δὲ ὥσπερ ὄρνεον εἰς παγίδα, οὐκ εἰδὼς ὅτι περὶ ψυχῆς τρέχει.	and he hastens as a bird into a snare, not knowing that he is running for his life.

νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ πρόσεχε ρήμασι στόματός μου·	Now then, my son, hearken to me, and attend to the words of my mouth.

μὴ ἐκκλινάτω εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῆς ἡ καρδία σου,	Let not thine heart turn aside to her ways:

πολλοὺς γὰρ τρώσασα καταβέβληκε, καὶ ἀναρίθμητοί εἰσιν οὓς πεφόνευκεν·	for she has wounded and cast down many, and those whom she has slain are innumerable.

ὁδοὶ ᾅδου ὁ οἶκος αὐτῆς κατάγουσαι εἰς τὰ ταμιεῖα τοῦ θανάτου.	Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death.
Κεφάλαιο 8	Chapter 8

1	1
ΣΥ τὴν σοφίαν κηρύξεις, ἵνα φρόνησίς σοι ὑπακούσῃ·	Thou shalt proclaim wisdom, that understanding may be obedient to thee.
2	2
ἐπὶ γὰρ τῶν ὑψηλῶν ἄκρων ἐστίν, ἀνὰ μέσον δὲ τῶν τρίβων ἕστηκε·	For she is on lofty eminences, and stands in the midst of the ways.
3	3
παρὰ γὰρ πύλαις δυναστῶν παρεδρεύει, ἐν δὲ εἰσόδοις ὑμνεῖται.	For she sits by the gates of princes, and sings in the entrances, saying,
4	4
῾Υμᾶς, ὦ ἄνθρωποι, παρακαλῶ, καὶ προΐεμαι ἐμὴν φωνὴν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων·	You, O men, I exhort; and utter my voice to the sons of men.
5	5
νοήσατε, ἄκακοι, πανουργίαν, οἱ δὲ ἀπαίδευτοι ἔνθεσθε καρδίαν.	O ye simple, understand subtlety, and ye that are untaught, imbibe knowledge.
6	6
εἰσακούσατέ μου, σεμνὰ γὰρ ἐρῶ καὶ ἀνοίσω ἀπὸ χειλέων ὀρθά·	Hearken to me; for I will speak solemn truths; and will produce right sayings from my lips.
7	7
ὅτι ἀλήθειαν μελετήσει ὁ φάρυγξ μου, ἐβδελυγμένα δὲ ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ χείλη ψευδῆ.	For my throat shall meditate truth; and false lips are an abomination before me.
8	8
μετὰ δικαιοσύνης πάντα τὰ ρήματα τοῦ στόματός μου, οὐδὲν ἐν αὐτοῖς σκολιὸν οὐδὲ στραγγαλιῶδες·	All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing in them wrong or perverse.
9	9
πάντα ἐνώπια τοῖς συνιοῦσι καὶ ὀρθὰ τοῖς εὑρίσκουσι γνῶσιν.	They are all evident to those that understand, and right to those that find knowledge.
10	10
λάβετε παιδείαν καὶ μὴ ἀργύριον, καὶ γνῶσιν ὑπὲρ χρυσίον δεδοκιμασμένον·	Receive instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than tried gold.
11	11
κρείσσων γὰρ σοφία λίθων πολυτελῶν, πᾶν δὲ τίμιον οὐκ ἄξιον αὐτῆς ἐστιν.	For wisdom is better than precious stones; and no valuable substance is of equal worth with it.

ἐγὼ ἡ σοφία κατεσκήνωσα βουλήν, καὶ γνῶσιν καὶ ἔννοιαν ἐγὼ ἐπεκαλεσάμην.	I wisdom have dwelt with counsel and knowledge, and I have called upon understanding.

φόβος Κυρίου μισεῖ ἀδικίαν, ὕβριν τε καὶ ὑπερηφανίαν καὶ ὁδοὺς πονηρῶν· μεμίσηκα δὲ ἐγὼ διεστραμμένας ὁδοὺς κακῶν.	The fear of the Lord hates unrighteousness, and insolence, and pride, and the ways of wicked men; and I hate the perverse ways of bad men.

ἐμὴ βουλὴ καὶ ἀσφάλεια, ἐμὴ φρόνησις, ἐμὴ δὲ ἰσχύς·	Counsel and safety are mine: prudence is mine, and strength is mine.
15	15
δι᾿ ἐμοῦ βασιλεῖς βασιλεύουσι καὶ οἱ δυνάσται γράφουσι δικαιοσύνην·	By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
16	16
δι᾿ ἐμοῦ μεγιστᾶνες μεγαλύνονται, καὶ τύραννοι δι᾿ ἐμοῦ κρατοῦσι γῆς.	By me nobles become great, and monarchs by me rule over the earth.
17	17
ἐγὼ τοὺς ἐμὲ φιλοῦντας ἀγαπῶ, οἱ δὲ ἐμὲ ζητοῦντες εὑρήσουσι χάριν.	I love those that love me; and they that seek me shall find me.
18	18
πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα ἐμοὶ ὑπάρχει καὶ κτῆσις πολλῶν καὶ δικαιοσύνη.	Wealth and glory belong to me; yea, abundant possessions and righteousness.
19	19
βέλτιον ἐμὲ καρπίζεσθαι ὑπὲρ χρυσίον καὶ λίθον τίμιον, τὰ δὲ ἐμὰ γεννήματα κρείσσω ἀργυρίου ἐκλεκτοῦ.	It is better to have my fruit than to have gold and precious stones; and my produce is better than choice silver.
20	20
ἐν ὁδοῖς δικαιοσύνης περιπατῶ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τρίβων δικαιοσύνης ἀναστρέφομαι,	I walk in ways of righteousness, and am conversant with the paths of judgment;
21	21
ἵνα μερίσω τοῖς ἐμὲ ἀγαπῶσιν ὕπαρξιν καὶ τοὺς θησαυροὺς αὐτῶν ἐμπλήσω ἀγαθῶν. ἐὰν ἀναγγείλω ὑμῖν τὰ καθ᾿ ἡμέραν γινόμενα, μνημονεύσω τὰ ἐξ αἰῶνος ἀριθμῆσαι.	that I may divide substance to them that love me, and may fill their treasures with good things.

Κύριος ἔκτισέ με ἀρχὴν ὁδῶν αὐτοῦ εἰς ἔργα αὐτοῦ,	The Lord made me the beginning of his ways for his works.

πρὸ τοῦ αἰῶνος ἐθεμελίωσέ με ἐν ἀρχῇ, πρὸ τοῦ τὴν γῆν ποιῆσαι	He established me before time was in the beginning, before he made the earth:
24	24
καὶ πρὸ τοῦ τὰς ἀβύσους ποιῆσαι, πρὸ τοῦ προελθεῖν τὰς πηγὰς τῶν ὑδάτων,	even before he made the depths; before the fountains of water came forth:
25	25
πρὸ τοῦ ὄρη ἑδρασθῆναι, πρὸ δὲ πάντων βουνῶν γεννᾷ με.	before the mountains were settled, and before all hills, he begets me.
26	26
Κύριος ἐποίησε χώρας καὶ ἀοικήτους καὶ ἄκρα οἰκούμενα τῆς ὑπ᾿ οὐρανόν.	The Lord made countries and uninhabited tracts, and the highest inhabited parts of the world.

ἡνίκα ἡτοίμαζε τὸν οὐρανόν, συμπαρήμην αὐτῷ, καὶ ὅτε ἀφώριζε τὸν ἑαυτοῦ θρόνον ἐπ᾿ ἀνέμων·	When he prepared the heaven, I was present with him; and when he prepared his throne upon the winds:

ἡνίκα ἰσχυρὰ ἐποίει τὰ ἄνω νέφη, καὶ ὡς ἀσφαλεῖς ἐτίθει πηγὰς τῆς ὑπ᾿ οὐρανὸν	and when he strengthened the clouds above; and when he secured the fountains of the earth:

καὶ ἰσχυρὰ ἐποίει τὰ θεμέλια τῆς γῆς,	and when he strengthened the foundations of the earth:
30	30
ἤμην παρ᾿ αὐτῷ ἁρμόζουσα. ἐγὼ ἤμην ᾗ προσέχαιρε, καθ᾿ ἡμέραν δὲ εὐφραινόμην ἐν προσώπῳ αὐτοῦ ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ,	I was by him, suiting myself to him, I was that wherein he took delight; and daily I rejoiced in his presence continually.

ὅτε ἐνευφραίνετο τὴν οἰκουμένην συντελέσας, καὶ ἐνευφραίνετο ἐν υἱοῖς ἀνθρώπων.	For he rejoiced when he had completed the world, and rejoiced among the children of men.

νῦν οὖν, υἱέ, ἄκουέ μου καὶ μακάριοι, οἳ ὁδούς μου φυλάσσοντες,	Now then, my son, hear me: blessed is the man who shall hearken to me, and the mortal who shall keep my ways;

ἀκούσατε παιδείαν καὶ σοφίσθητε καὶ μὴ ἀποφραγῆτε.

μακάριος ἀνήρ, ὃς εἰσακούεταί μου, καὶ ἄνθρωπος, ὃς τὰς ἐμὰς ὁδοὺς φυλάξει ἀγρυπνῶν ἐπ᾿ ἐμαῖς θύραις καθ᾿ ἡμέραν, τηρῶν σταθμοὺς ἐμῶν εἰσόδων·	watching daily at my doors, waiting at the posts of my entrances.

αἱ γὰρ ἔξοδοί μου ἔξοδοι ζωῆς, καὶ ἑτοιμάζεται θέλησις παρὰ Κυρίου.	For my outgoings are the outgoings of life, and in them is prepared favour from the Lord.

οἱ δὲ ἁμαρτάνοντες εἰς ἐμὲ ἀσεβοῦσιν εἰς τὰ ἑαυτῶν ψυχάς, καὶ οἱ μισοῦντές με ἀγαπῶσι θάνατον.	But they that sin against me act wickedly against their own souls: and they that hate me love death.
Κεφάλαιο 9	Chapter 9

1	1
Η σοφία ᾠκοδόμησεν ἑαυτῇ οἶκον καὶ ὑπήρεισε στύλους ἑπτά·	Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars.
2	2
ἔσφαξε τὰ ἑαυτῆς θύματα, ἐκέρασεν εἰς κρατῆρα τὸν ἑαυτῆς οἶνον καὶ ἡτοιμάσατο τὴν ἑαυτῆς τράπεζαν·	She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table.

ἀπέστειλε τοὺς ἑαυτῆς δούλους συγκαλοῦσα μετὰ ὑψηλοῦ κηρύγματος ἐπὶ κρατῆρα λέγουσα·	She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying,

ὅς ἐστιν ἄφρων, ἐκκλινάτω πρός με· καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρενῶν εἶπεν·	Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that want understanding she says,
5	5
ἔλθετε φάγετε τῶν ἐμῶν ἄρτων καὶ πίετε οἶνον, ὃν ἐκέρασα ὑμῖν·	Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.
6	6
ἀπολείπετε ἀφροσύνην, ἵνα εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα βασιλεύσητε, καὶ ζητήσατε φρόνησιν, καὶ κατορθώσατε ἐν γνώσει σύνεσιν.	Leave folly, that ye may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge.

῾Ο παιδεύων κακοὺς λήψεται ἑαυτῷ ἀτιμίαν· ἐλέγχων δὲ τὸν ἀσεβῆ μωμήσεται ἑαυτόν.	He that reproves evil men shall get dishonour to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly man shall disgrace himself.

μὴ ἔλεγχε κακούς, ἵνα μὴ μισήσωσί σε· ἔλεγχε σοφόν, καὶ ἀγαπήσει σε.	Rebuke not evil men, lest they should hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9	9
δίδου σοφῷ ἀφορμήν, καὶ σοφώτερος ἔσται· γνώριζε δικαίῳ, καὶ προσθήσει τοῦ δέχεσθαι.	Give an opportunity to a wise man, and he will be wiser: instruct a just man, and he will receive more instruction.
10	10
ἀρχὴ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου, καὶ βουλὴ ἁγίων σύνεσις, τὸ δὲ γνῶναι νόμον διανοίας ἐστὶν ἀγαθῆς·	The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the counsel of saints is understanding:

τούτῳ γὰρ τῷ τρόπῳ πολὺν ζήσεις χρόνον, καὶ προστεθήσεταί σοι ἔτη ζωῆς σου.	For in this way thou shalt live long, and years of thy life shall be added to thee.

υἱέ, ἐὰν σοφὸς γένῃ σεαυτῷ, σοφὸς ἔση καὶ τοῖς πλησίον· ἐὰν δὲ κακὸς ἀποβῇς, μόνος ἂν ἀντλήσεις κακά. ὃς ἐρείδεται ἐπὶ ψεύδεσιν, οὗτος ποιμαίνει ἀνέμους, ὁ δ᾿ αὐτὸς διώξεται ὄρνεα πετόμενα· ἀπέλιπε γὰρ ὁδοὺς τοῦ ἑαυτοῦ ἀμπελῶνος, τοὺς δὲ ἄξονας τοῦ ἰδίου γεωργίου πεπλάνηται· διαπορεύεται δὲ δι᾿ ἀνύδρου ἐρήμου καὶ γῆν διατεταγμένην ἐν διψώδεσι, συνάγει δὲ χερσὶν ἀκαρπίαν.	Son, if thou be wise for thyself, thou shalt also be wise for thy neighbours; and if thou shouldest prove wicked, thou alone wilt bear the evil.

Γυνὴ ἄφρων καὶ θρασεῖα ἐνδεὴς ψωμοῦ γίνεται, ἣ οὐκ ἐπίσταται αἰσχύνην.	A foolish and bold woman, who knows not modesty, comes to want a morsel.

ἐκάθισεν ἐπὶ θύραις τοῦ ἑαυτῆς οἴκου, ἐπὶ δίφρου ἐμφανῶς ἐν πλατείαις,	She sits at the doors of her house, on a seat openly in the streets,

προσκαλουμένη τοὺς παριόντας καὶ κατευθύνοντας ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν·	calling to passers by, and to those that are going right on their ways;
16	16
ὅς ἐστιν ὑμῶν ἀφρονέστατος, ἐκκλινάτω πρός με καὶ τοῖς ἐνδεέσι φρονήσεως παρακελεύομαι λέγουσα·	saying, Whoso is most senseless of you, let him turn aside to me; and I exhort those that want prudence, saying,

ἄρτων κρυφίων ἡδέως ἅψασθε καὶ ὕδατος κλοπῆς γλυκεροῦ.	Take and enjoy secret bread, and the sweet water of theft.

ὁ δὲ οὐκ οἶδεν ὅτι γηγενεῖς παρ᾿ αὐτῇ ὄλλυνται, καὶ ἐπὶ πέταυρον ᾅδου συναντᾷ. 18α ἀλλὰ ἀποπήδησον, μὴ χρονίσῃς ἐν τῷ τόπῳ, μηδὲ ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτήν· 18β οὕτως γὰρ διαβήσῃ ὕδωρ ἀλλότριον καὶ ὑπερβήσῃ ποταμὸν ἀλλότριον· 18γ ἀπὸ δὲ ὕδατος ἀλλοτρίου ἀπόσχου καὶ ἀπὸ πηγῆς ἀλλοτρίας μὴ πίῃς, 18δ ἵνα πολὺν ζήσῃς χρόνον, προστεθῇ δέ σοι ἔτη ζωῆς.	But he knows that mighty men die by her, and he falls in with a snare of hell.
Κεφάλαιο 10	Chapter 10

1	1
ΥΙΟΣ σοφὸς εὐφραίνει πατέρα, υἱὸς δὲ ἄφρων λύπη τῇ μητρί.	A wise son makes his father glad: but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.
2	2
οὐκ ὠφελήσουσι θησαυροὶ ἀνόμους, δικαιοσύνη δὲ ρύσεται ἐκ θανάτου.	Treasures shall not profit the lawless: but righteousness shall deliver from death.
3	3
οὐ λιμοκτονήσει Κύριος ψυχὴν δικαίαν, ζωὴν δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀνατρέψει.	The Lord will not famish a righteous soul: but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly.
4	4
πενία ἄνδρα ταπεινοῖ, χεῖρες δὲ ἀνδρείων πλουτίζουσιν. 4α υἱὸς πεπαιδευμένος σοφὸς ἔσται, τῷ δὲ ἄφρονι διακόνῳ χρήσεται.	Poverty brings a man low: but the hands of the vigorous make rich.

διεσώθη ἀπὸ καύματος υἱὸς νοήμων, ἀνεμόφθορος δὲ γίνεται ἐν ἀμητῷ υἱὸς παράνομος.	A wise son is saved from heat: but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest.

εὐλογία Κυρίου ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν δικαίου, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καλύψει πένθος ἄωρον.	The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the just: but untimely grief shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.
7	7
μνήμη δικαίων μετ᾿ ἐγκωμίων, ὄνομα δὲ ἀσεβοῦς σβέννυται.	The memory of the just is praised; but the name of the ungodly man is extinguished.
8	8
σοφὸς καρδίᾳ δέξεται ἐντολάς, ὁ δὲ ἄστεγος χείλεσι σκολιάζων ὑποσκελισθήσεται.	A wise man in heart will receive commandments; but he that is unguarded in his lips shall be overthrown in his perverseness.
9	9
ὃς πορεύεται ἁπλῶς, πορεύεται πεποιθώς, ὁ δὲ διαστρέφων τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, γνωσθήσεται.	He that walks simply, walks confidently; but he that perverts his ways shall be known.

ὁ ἐννεύων ὀφθαλμοῖς μετὰ δόλου, συνάγει ἀνδράσι λύπας, ὁ δὲ ἐλέγχων μετὰ παρρησίας, εἰρηνοποιεῖ.	He that winks with his eyes deceitfully, procures griefs for men; but he that reproves boldly is a peacemaker.

πηγὴ ζωῆς ἐν χειρὶ δικαίου, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβοῦς καλύψει ἀπώλεια.	There is a fountain of life in the hand of a righteous man; but destruction shall cover the mouth of the ungodly.

μῖσος ἐγείρει νεῖκος, πάντας δὲ τοὺς μὴ φιλονεικοῦντας καλύπτει φιλία.	Hatred stirs up strife; but affection covers all that do not love strife.

ὃς ἐκ χειλέων προφέρει σοφίαν, ράβδῳ τύπτει ἄνδρα ἀκάρδιον.	He that brings forth wisdom from his lips smites the fool with a rod.
14	14
σοφοὶ κρύψουσιν αἴσθησιν, στόμα δὲ προπετοῦς ἐγγίζει συντριβῇ.	The wise will hide discretion; but the mouth of the hasty draws near to ruin.

κτῆσις πλουσίων πόλις ὀχυρά, συντριβὴ δὲ ἀσεβῶν πενία.	The wealth of rich men is a strong city; but poverty is the ruin of the ungodly.

ἔργα δικαίων ζωὴν ποιεῖ, καρποὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἁμαρτίας.	The works of the righteous produce life; but the fruits of the ungodly produce sins.

ὁδοὺς δικαίας ζωῆς φυλάσσει παιδεία, παιδεία δὲ ἀνεξέλεγκτος πλανᾶται.	Instruction keeps the right ways of life; but instruction unchastened goes astray.

καλύπτουσιν ἔχθραν χείλη δίκαια, οἱ δὲ ἐκφέροντες λοιδορίας ἀφρονέστατοί εἰσιν.	Righteous lips cover enmity; but they that utter railings are most foolish.

ἐκ πολυλογίας οὐκ ἐκφεύξῃ ἁμαρτίαν, φειδόμενος δὲ χειλέων νοήμων ἔσῃ.	By a multitude of words thou shalt not escape sin; but if thou refrain thy lips thou wilt be prudent.

ἄργυρος πεπυρωμένος γλῶσσα δικαίου, καρδία δὲ ἀσεβοῦς ἐκλείψει.	The tongue of the just is tried silver; but the heart of the ungodly shall fail.

χείλη δικαίων ἐπίσταται ὑψηλά, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες ἐν ἐνδείᾳ τελευτῶσιν.	The lips of the righteous know sublime truths: but the foolish die in want.

εὐλογία Κυρίου ἐπὶ κεφαλὴν δικαίου· αὕτη πλουτίζει, καὶ οὐ μὴ προστεθῇ αὐτῇ λύπη ἐν καρδία.	The blessing of the Lord is upon the head of the righteous; it enriches him, and grief of heart shall not be added to it.

ἐν γέλωτι ἄφρων πράσσει κακά, ἡ δὲ σοφία ἀνδρὶ τίκτει φρόνησιν.	A fool does mischief in sport; but wisdom brings forth prudence for a man.

ἐν ἀπωλείᾳ ἀσεβὴς περιφέρεται, ἐπιθυμία δὲ δικαίου δεκτή.	The ungodly is engulphed in destruction; but the desire of the righteous is acceptable.
25	25
παραπορευομένης καταιγίδος ἀφανίζεται ἀσεβής, δίκαιος δὲ ἐκκλίνας σώζεται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.	When the storm passes by, the ungodly vanishes away; but the righteous turns aside and escapes for ever.

ὥσπερ ὄμφαξ ὀδοῦσι βλαβερὸν καὶ καπνὸς ὄμμασιν, οὕτως παρανομία τοῖς χρωμένοις αὐτῇ.	As a sour grape is hurtful to the teeth, and smoke to the eyes, so iniquity hurts those that practise it.

φόβος Κυρίου προστίθησιν ἡμέρας, ἔτη δὲ ἀσεβῶν ὀλιγωθήσεται.	The fear of the Lord adds length of days: but the years of the ungodly shall be shortened.

ἐγχρονίζει δικαίοις εὐφροσύνη, ἐλπὶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀπολεῖται.	Joy rests long with the righteous: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.

ὀχύρωμα ὁσίου φόβος Κυρίου, συντριβὴ δὲ τοῖς ἐργαζομένοις κακά.	The fear of the Lord is a strong hold of the saints: but ruin comes to them that work wickedness.

δίκαιος εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα οὐκ ἐνδώσει, ἀσεβεῖς δὲ οὐκ οἰκήσουσι γῆν.	The righteous shall never fail: but the ungodly shall not dwell in the earth.

στόμα δικαίου ἀποστάζει σοφίαν, γλῶσσα δὲ ἀδίκου ἐξολεῖται.	The mouth of the righteous drops wisdom: but the tongue of the unjust shall perish.

χείλη ἀνδρῶν δικαίων ἀποστάζει χάριτας, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀποστρέφεται.	The lips of just men drop grace: but the mouth of the ungodly is perverse.

ΖΥΓΟΙ δόλιοι βδέλυγμα ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, στάθμιον δὲ δίκαιον δεκτὸν αὐτῷ.	False balances are an abomination before the Lord: but a just weight is acceptable unto him.

οὗ ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃ ὕβρις, ἐκεῖ καὶ ἀτιμία· στόμα δὲ ταπεινῶν μελετᾷ σοφίαν	Wherever pride enters, there will be also disgrace: but the mouth of the lowly meditates wisdom.

ἀποθανὼν δίκαιος ἔλιπε μετάμελον, πρόχειρος δὲ γίνεται καὶ ἐπίχαρτος ἀσεβῶν ἀπώλεια.	When a just man dies he leaves regret: but the destruction of the ungodly is speedy, and causes joy.

δικαιοσύνη ἀμώμους ὀρθοτομεῖ ὁδούς, ἀσέβεια δὲ περιπίπτει ἀδικίᾳ.	Righteousness traces out blameless paths: but ungodliness encounters unjust dealing.

δικαιοσύνη ἀνδρῶν ὀρθῶν ρύεται αὐτούς, τῇ δὲ ἀπωλείᾳ αὐτῶν ἁλίσκονται παράνομοι.	The righteousness of upright men delivers them: but transgressors are caught in their own destruction.

τελευτήσαντος ἀνδρὸς δικαίου οὐκ ὄλλυται ἐλπίς, τὸ δὲ καύχημα τῶν ἀσεβῶν ὄλλυται.	At the death of a just man his hope does not perish: but the boast of the ungodly perishes.

δίκαιος ἐκ θήρας ἐκδύνει, ἀντ᾿ αὐτοῦ δὲ παραδίδοται ὁ ἀσεβής.	A righteous man escapes from a snare, and the ungodly man is delivered up in his place.

ἐν στόματι ἀσεβῶν παγὶς πολίταις, αἴσθησις δὲ δικαίων εὔοδος.	In the mouth of ungodly men is a snare to citizens: but the understanding of righteous men is prosperous.

ἐν ἀγαθοῖς δικαίων κατώρθωσε πόλις,	In the prosperity of righteous men a city prospers:

στόμασι δὲ ἀσεβῶν κατεσκάφη.	but by the mouths of ungodly men it is overthrown.

μυκτηρίζει πολίτας ἐνδεὴς φρενῶν, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος ἡσυχίαν ἄγει.	A man void of understanding sneers at his fellow citizens: but a sensible man is quiet.

ἀνὴρ δίγλωσσος ἀποκαλύπτει βουλὰς ἐν συνεδρίῳ, πιστὸς δὲ πνοῇ κρύπτει πράγματα.	A double-tongued man discloses the secret counsels of an assembly: but he that is faithful in spirit conceals matters.

οἷς μὴ ὑπάρχει κυβέρνησις, πίπτουσιν ὥπερ φύλλα, σωτηρία δὲ ὑπάρχει ἐν πολλῇ βουλῇ.	They that have no guidance fall like leaves: but in much counsel there is safety.

πονηρὸς κακοποιεῖ ὅταν συμμίξῃ δικαίῳ, μισεῖ δὲ ἦχον ἀσφαλείας.	A bad man does harm wherever he meets a just man: and he hates the sound of safety.

γυνὴ εὐχάριστος ἐγείρει ἀνδρὶ δόξαν, θρόνος δὲ ἀτιμίας γυνὴ μισοῦσα δίκαια. πλούτου ὀκνηροὶ ἐνδεεῖς γίνονται, οἱ δὲ ἀνδρεῖοι ἐρείδονται πλούτῳ.	A gracious wife brings glory to her husband: but a woman hating righteousness is a theme of dishonour. The slothful come to want: but the diligent support themselves with wealth.

τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ ἀγαθὸν ποιεῖ ἀνὴρ ἐλεήμων, ἐξολλύει δὲ αὐτοῦ σῶμα ὁ ἀνελεήμων.	A merciful man does good to his own soul: but the merciless destroys his own body.

ἀσεβεῖς ποιεῖ ἔργα ἄδικα, σπέρμα δὲ δικαίων μισθὸς ἀληθείας.	An ungodly man performs unrighteous works: but the seed of the righteous is a reward of truth.
19	19
υἱὸς δίκαιος γεννᾶται εἰς ζωήν, διωγμὸς δὲ ἀσεβοῦς εἰς θάνατον.	A righteous son is born for life: but the persecution of the ungodly ends in death.
20	20
βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ διεστραμμέναι ὁδοί, προσδεκτοὶ δὲ αὐτῷ πάντες ἄμωμοι ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτῶν.	Perverse ways are an abomination to the Lord: but all they that are blameless in their ways are acceptable to him.

χειρὶ χεῖρας ἐμβαλὼν ἀδίκως οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται, ὁ δὲ σπείρων δικαιοσύνην λήψεται μισθὸν πιστόν.	He that unjustly strikes hands shall not be unpunished: but he that sows righteousness shall receive a faithful reward.

ὥσπερ ἐνώτιον ἐν ρινὶ ὑός, οὕτως γυναικὶ κακόφρονι κάλλος.	As an ornament in a swine's snout, so is beauty to an ill-minded woman.

ἐπιθυμία δικαίων πᾶσα ἀγαθή, ἐλπὶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀπολεῖται.	All the desire of the righteous is good: but the hope of the ungodly shall perish.

εἰσὶν οἳ τὰ ἴδια σπείροντες πλείονα ποιοῦσιν, εἰσὶ δὲ καὶ οἳ συνάγοντες ἐλαττονοῦνται.	There are some who scatter their own, and make it more: and there are some also who gather, yet have less.

ψυχὴ εὐλογουμένη πᾶσα ἁπλῆ, ἀνὴρ δὲ θυμώδης οὐκ εὐσχήμων.	Every sincere soul is blessed: but a passionate man is not graceful.

ὁ συνέχων σῖτον ὑπολείποιτο αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, εὐλογίαν δὲ εἰς κεφαλὴν τοῦ μεταδιδόντος.	May he that hoards corn leave it to the nation: but blessing be on the head of him that gives it.

τεκταινόμενος ἀγαθὰ ζητεῖ χάριν ἀγαθήν, ἐκζητοῦντα δὲ κακά, καταλήψεται αὐτόν.	He that devises good counsels seeks good favour: but as for him that seeks after evil, evil shall overtake him.

ὁ πεποιθὼς ἐπὶ πλούτῳ οὗτος πεσεῖται, ὁ δὲ ἀντιλαμβανόμενος δικαίων οὗτος ἀνατελεῖ.	He that trusts in wealth shall fall; but he that helps righteous men shall rise.

ὁ μὴ συμπεριφερόμενος τῷ ἑαυτοῦ οἴκῳ κληρονομήσει ἄνεμον, δουλεύσει δὲ ἄφρων φρονίμῳ.	He that deals not graciously with his own house shall inherit the wind; and the fool shall be servant to the wise man.

ἐκ καρποῦ δικαιοσύνης φύεται δένδρον ζωῆς, ἀφαιροῦνται δὲ ἄωροι ψυχαὶ παρανόμων.	Out of the fruit of righteousness grows a tree of life; but the souls of transgressors are cut off before their time.

εἰ ὁ μὲν δίκαιος μόλις σώζεται, ὁ ἀσεβὴς καὶ ἁμαρτωλὸς ποὺ φανεῖται;	If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
Κεφάλαιο 12	Chapter 12

Ο ἀγαπῶν παιδείαν, ἀγαπᾷ αἴσθησιν, ὁ δὲ μισῶν ἐλέγχους ἄφρων.	He that loves instruction loves sense, but he that hates reproofs is a fool.

κρείσων ὁ εὑρὼν χάριν παρὰ Κυρίῳ, ἀνὴρ δὲ παράνομος παρασιωπηθήσεται.	He that has found favour with the Lord is made better; but a transgressor shall be passed over in silence.
3	3
οὐ κατορθώσει ἄνθρωπος ἐξ ἀνόμου, αἱ δὲ ρίζαι τῶν δικαίων οὐκ ἐξαρθήσονται.	A man shall not prosper by wickedness; but the roots of the righteous shall not be taken up.

γυνὴ ἀνδρεία στέφανος τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς· ὥσπερ δὲ ἐν ξύλῳ σκώληξ, οὕτως ἄνδρα ἀπόλλυσι γυνὴ κακοποιός.	A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband; but as a worm in wood, so a bad woman destroys her husband.

λογισμοὶ δικαίων κρίματα, κυβερνῶσι δὲ ἀσεβεῖς δόλους.	The thoughts of the righteous are true judgments; but ungodly men devise deceits.

λόγοι ἀσεβῶν δόλιοι, στόμα δὲ ὀρθῶν ρύσεται αὐτούς.	The words of ungodly men are crafty; but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them.

οὗ ἐὰν στραφῇ ὁ ἀσεβής, ἀφανίζεται, οἶκοι δὲ δικαίων παραμένουσι.	When the ungodly is overthrown, he vanishes away; but the houses of the just remain.

στόμα συνετοῦ ἐγκωμιάζεται ὑπὸ ἀνδρός, νωθροκάρδιος δὲ μυκτηρίζεται.	The mouth of an understanding man is praised by a man; but he that is dull of heart is had in derision.

κρείσσων ἀνὴρ ἐν ἀτιμίᾳ δουλεύων ἑαυτῷ ἢ τιμὴν ἑαυτῷ περιτιθεὶς καὶ προσδεόμενος ἄρτου.	Better is a man in dishonour serving himself, than one honouring himself and wanting bread.

δίκαιος οἰκτείρει ψυχὰς κτηνῶν αὐτοῦ, τὰ δὲ σπλάγχνα τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀνελεήμονα.	A righteous man has pity for the lives of his cattle; but the bowels of the ungodly are unmerciful.

ὁ ἐργαζόμενος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γῆν ἐμπλησθήσεται ἄρτων, οἱ δὲ διώκοντες μάταια ἐνδεεῖς φρενῶν. 11α ὅς ἐστιν ἡδὺς ἐν οἴνων διατριβαῖς, ἐν τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ ὀχυρώμασι καταλείψει ἀτιμίαν.	He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread; but they that pursue vanities are void of understanding.
12	12
ἐπιθυμίαι ἀσεβῶν κακαί, αἱ δὲ ρίζαι τῶν εὐσεβῶν ἐν ὀχυρώμασι.	The desires of the ungodly are evil; but the roots of the godly are firmly set.
13	13
δι᾿ ἁμαρτίαν χειλέων ἐμπίπτει εἰς παγίδας ἁμαρτωλός, ἐκφεύγει δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν δίκαιος. 13α ὁ βλέπων λεῖα ἐλεηθήσεται, ὁ δὲ συναντῶν ἐν πύλαις ἐκθλίψει ψυχάς.	For the sin of his lips a sinner falls into snares; but a righteous man escapes from them.
14	14
ἀπὸ καρπῶν στόματος ψυχὴ ἀνδρὸς πλησθήσεται ἀγαθῶν, ἀνταπόδομα δὲ χειλέων αὐτοῦ δοθήσεται αὐτῷ.	The soul of a man shall be filled with good from the fruits of his mouth; and the recompence of his lips shall be given to him.

ὁδοὶ ἀφρόνων ὀρθαὶ ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν, εἰσακούει δὲ συμβουλίας σοφός.	The ways of fools are right in their own eyes; but a wise man hearkens to counsels.

ἄφρων αὐθημερὸν ἐξαγγέλλει ὀργὴν αὐτοῦ, κρύπτει δὲ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἀτιμίαν ἀνὴρ πανοῦργος.	A fool declares his wrath the same day; but a prudent man hides his own disgrace.

ἐπιδεικνυμένην πίστιν ἀπαγγέλλει δίκαιος, ὁ δὲ μάρτυς τῶν ἀδίκων δόλιος.	A righteous man declares the open truth; but an unjust witness is deceitful.

εἰσὶν οἳ λέγοντες τιτρώσκουσι μαχαίρᾳ, γλῶσσαι δὲ σοφῶν ἰῶνται.	Some wound as they speak, like swords; but the tongues of the wise heal.

χείλη ἀληθινὰ κατορθοῖ μαρτυρίαν, μάρτυς δὲ ταχὺς γλῶσσαν ἔχει ἄδικον.	True lips establish testimony; but a hasty witness has an unjust tongue.

δόλος ἐν καρδίᾳ τεκταινομένου κακά, οἱ δὲ βουλόμενοι εἰρήνην εὐφρανθήσονται.	There is deceit in the heart of him that imagines evil; but they that love peace shall rejoice.

οὐκ ἀρέσει τῷ δικαίῳ οὐδὲν ἄδικον, οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς πλησθήσονται κακῶν.	No injustice will please a just man; but the ungodly will be filled with mischief.

βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ χείλη ψευδῆ, ὁ δὲ ποιῶν πίστεις δεκτὸς παρ᾿ αὐτῷ.	Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord; but he that deals faithfully is accepted with him.

ἀνὴρ συνετὸς θρόνος αἰσθήσεως, καρδία δὲ ἀφρόνων συναντήσεται ἀραῖς.	An understanding man is a throne of wisdom; but the heart of fools shall meet with curses.

χεὶρ ἐκλεκτῶν κρατήσει εὐχερῶς, δόλιοι δὲ ἔσονται ἐν προνομῇ.	The hand of chosen men shall easily obtain rule; but the deceitful shall be for a prey.

φοβερὸς λόγος καρδίαν ταράσσει ἀνδρὸς δικαίου, ἀγγελία δὲ ἀγαθὴ εὐφραίνει αὐτόν.	A terrible word troubles the heart of a righteous man; but a good message rejoices him.

ἐπιγνώμων δίκαιος ἑαυτοῦ φίλος ἔσται, αἱ δὲ γνῶμαι τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀνεπιεικεῖς. ἁμαρτάνοντας καταδιώξεται κακὰ ἡ δὲ ὁδὸς τῶν ἀσεβῶν πλανήσει αὐτούς.	A just arbitrator shall be his own friend; but mischief shall pursue sinners; and the way of ungodly men shall lead them astray.

οὐκ ἐπιτεύξεται δόλιος θήρας, κτῆμα δὲ τίμιον ἀνὴρ καθαρός.	A deceitful man shall catch no game; but a blameless man is a precious possession.

ἐν ὁδοῖς δικαιοσύνης ζωή, ὁδοὶ δὲ μνησικάκων εἰς θάνατον.	In the ways of righteousness is life; but the ways of those that remember injuries lead to death.
Κεφάλαιο 13	Chapter 13

ΥΙΟΣ πανοῦργος ὑπήκοος πατρί, υἱὸς δὲ ἀνήκοος ἐν ἀπωλείᾳ.	A wise son is obedient to his father: but a disobedient son will be destroyed.

ἀπὸ καρπῶν δικαιοσύνης φάγεται ἀγαθός, ψυχαὶ δὲ παρανόμων ὀλοῦνται ἄωροι.	A good man shall eat of the fruits of righteousness: but the lives of transgressors shall perish before their time.

ὃς φυλάσσει τὸ ἑαυτοῦ στόμα, τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν, ὁ δὲ προπετὴς χείλεσι πτοήσει ἑαυτόν.	He that keeps his own mouth keeps his own life: but he that is hasty with his lips shall bring terror upon himself.

ἐν ἐπιθυμίαις ἐστὶ πᾶς ἀεργός, χεῖρες δὲ ἀνδρείων ἐν ἐπιμελείᾳ.	Every slothful man desires, but the hands of the active are diligent.

λόγον ἄδικον μισεῖ δίκαιος, ἀσεβὴς δὲ αἰσχύνεται καὶ οὐχ ἕξει παρρησίαν.	A righteous man hates an unjust word: but an ungodly man is ashamed, and will have no confidence.

εἰσὶν οἱ πλουτίζοντες ἑαυτοὺς μηδὲν ἔχοντες, καί εἰσιν οἱ ταπεινοῦντες ἑαυτοὺς ἐν πολλῷ πλούτῳ.	There are some who, having nothing, enrich themselves: and there are some who bring themselves down in the midst of much wealth.

λύτρον ἀνδρὸς ψυχῆς ὁ ἴδιος πλοῦτος, πτωχὸς δὲ οὐχ ὑφίσταται ἀπειλήν.	A man's own wealth is the ransom of his life: but the poor endures not threatening.

φῶς δικαίοις διαπαντός, φῶς δὲ ἀσεβῶν σβέννυται. 9α ψυχαὶ δόλιαι πλανῶνται ἐν ἁμαρτίαις, δίκαιοι δὲ οἰκτείρουσι καὶ ἐλεοῦσι.	The righteous always have light: but the light of the ungodly is quenched.
10	10
κακὸς μεθ᾿ ὕβρεως πράσσει κακά, οἱ δὲ ἑαυτῶν ἐπιγνώμονες σοφοί.	A bad man does evil with insolence: but they that are judges of themselves are wise.

ὕπαρξις ἐπισπουδαζομένη μετὰ ἀνομίας ἐλάσσων γίνεται, ὁ δὲ συνάγων ἑαυτῷ μετ᾿ εὐσεβείας πληθυνθήσεται· δίκαιος οἰκτείρει καὶ κιχρᾷ.	Wealth gotten hastily with iniquity is diminished: but he that gathers for himself with godliness shall be increased. The righteous is merciful, and lends.

κρείσσων ἐναρχόμενος βοηθῶν καρδίᾳ τοῦ ἐπαγγελλομένου καὶ εἰς ἐλπίδα ἄγοντος· δένδρον γὰρ ζωῆς ἐπιθυμία ἀγαθή.	Better is he that begins to help heartily, than he that promises and leads another to hope: for a good desire is a tree of life.

He that slights a matter shall be slighted of it: but he that fears the commandment has health of soul.

νόμος σοφοῦ πηγὴ ζωῆς, ὁ δὲ ἄνους ὑπὸ παγίδος θανεῖται.	The law of the wise is a fountain of life: but the man void of understanding shall die by a snare.

σύνεσις ἀγαθὴ δίδωσι χάριν, τὸ δὲ γνῶναι νόμον διανοίας ἐστὶν ἀγαθῆς, ὁδοὶ δὲ καταφρονούντων ἐν ἀπωλείᾳ.	Sound discretion gives favour, and to know the law is the part of a sound understanding: but the ways of scorners tend to destruction.

πᾶς πανοῦργος πράσσει μετὰ γνώσεως, ὁ δὲ ἄφρων ἐξεπέτασεν ἑαυτοῦ κακίαν.	Every prudent man acts with knowledge: but the fool displays his own mischief.

βασιλεὺς θρασὺς ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά, ἄγγελος δὲ σοφὸς ρύσεται αὐτόν.	A rash king shall fall into mischief: but a wise messenger shall deliver him.

πενίαν καὶ ἀτιμίαν ἀφαιρεῖται παιδεία, ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων ἐλέγχους δοξασθήσεται.	Instruction removes poverty and disgrace: but he that attends to reproofs shall be honoured.

ἐπιθυμίαι εὐσεβῶν ἡδύνουσι ψυχήν, ἔργα δὲ ἀσεβῶν μακρὰν ἀπὸ γνώσεως.	The desires of the godly gladden the soul, but the works of the ungodly are far from knowledge.

ὁ συμπορευόμενος σοφοῖς σοφὸς ἔσται, ὁ δὲ συμπορευόμενος ἄφροσι γνωσθήσεται.	If thou walkest with wise men thou shalt be wise: but he that walks with fools shall be known.

ἁμαρτάνοντας καταδιώξεται κακά, τοὺς δὲ δικαίους καταλήψεται ἀγαθά.	Evil shall pursue sinners; but good shall overtake the righteous.

ἀγαθὸς ἀνὴρ κληρονομήσει υἱοὺς υἱῶν, θησαυρίζεται δὲ δικαίοις πλοῦτος ἀσεβῶν.	A good man shall inherit children's children; and the wealth of ungodly men is laid up for the just.

δίκαιοι ποιήσουσιν ἐν πλούτῳ ἔτη πολλά, ἄδικοι δὲ ἀπολοῦνται συντόμως.	The righteous shall spend many years in wealth: but the unrighteous shall perish suddenly.

ὃς φείδεται τῆς βακτηρίας μισεῖ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ, ὁ δὲ ἀγαπῶν ἐπιμελῶς παιδεύει.	He that spares the rod hates his son: but he that loves, carefully chastens him.

δίκαιος ἔσθων ἐμπιπλᾷ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ, ψυχαὶ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἐνδεεῖς.	A just man eats and satisfies his soul: but the souls of the ungodly are in want.
Κεφάλαιο 14	Chapter 14

ΣΟΦΑΙ γυναῖκες ᾠκοδόμησαν οἴκους, ἡ δὲ ἄφρων κατέσκαψε ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῆς.	Wise women build houses: but a foolish one digs hers down with her hands.

ὁ πορευόμενος ὀρθῶς φοβεῖται τὸν Κύριον, ὁ δὲ σκολιάζων ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ ἀτιμασθήσεται.	He that walks uprightly fears the Lord; but he that is perverse in his ways shall be dishonoured.

ἐκ στόματος ἀφρόνων βακτηρία ὕβρεως, χείλη δὲ σοφῶν φυλάσσει αὐτούς.	Out of the mouth of fools comes a rod of pride; but the lips of the wise preserve them.

οὗ μή εἰσι βόες, φάτναι καθαραί· οὗ δὲ πολλὰ γεννήματα, φανερὰ βοὸς ἰσχύς.	Where no oxen are, the cribs are clean; but where there is abundant produce, the strength of the ox is apparent.

μάρτυς πιστὸς οὐ ψεύδεται, ἐκκαίει δὲ ψευδῆ μάρτυς ἄδικος.	A faithful witness does not lie; but an unjust witness kindles falsehoods.

ζητήσεις σοφίαν παρὰ κακοῖς καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσεις, αἴσθησις δὲ παρὰ φρονίμοις εὐχερής.	Thou shalt seek wisdom with bad men, and shalt not find it; but discretion is easily available with the prudent.

πάντα ἐναντία ἀνδρὶ ἄφρονι, ὅπλα δὲ αἰσθήσεως χείλη σοφά.	All things are adverse to a foolish man; but wise lips are the weapons of discretion.
8	8
σοφία πανούργων ἐπιγνώσεται τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτῶν, ἄνοια δὲ ἀφρόνων ἐν πλάνῃ.	The wisdom of the prudent will understand their ways; but the folly of fools leads astray.

οἰκίαι παρανόμων ὀφειλήσουσι καθαρισμόν, οἰκίαι δὲ δικαίων δεκταί.	The houses of transgressors will need purification; but the houses of the just are acceptable.

καρδία ἀνδρὸς αἰσθητική, λυπηρὰ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ· ὅταν δὲ εὐφραίνηται, οὐκ ἐπιμίγνυται ὕβρει.	If a man's mind is intelligent, his soul is sorrowful; and when he rejoices, he has no fellowship with pride.

οἰκίαι ἀσεβῶν ἀφανισθήσονται, σκηναὶ δὲ κατορθούντων στήσονται.	The houses of ungodly men shall be utterly destroyed; but the tabernacles of them that walk uprightly shall stand.

ἔστιν ὁδός, ἣ δοκεῖ παρὰ ἀνθρώποις ὀρθὴ εἶναι, τὰ δὲ τελευταῖα αὐτῆς ἔρχεται εἰς πυθμένα ᾄδου.	There is a way which seems to be right with men, but the ends of it reach to the depth of hell.

ἐν εὐφροσύναις οὐ προσμίγνυται λύπη, τελευταῖα δὲ χαρὰ εἰς πένθος ἔρχεται.	Grief mingles not with mirth; and joy in the end comes to grief.
14	14
τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν πλησθήσεται θρασυκάρδιος, ἀπὸ δὲ τῶν διανοημάτων αὐτοῦ ἀνὴρ ἀγαθός.	A stout-hearted man shall be filled with his own ways; and a good man with his own thoughts.
15	15
ἄκακος πιστεύει παντὶ λόγῳ, πανοῦργος δὲ ἔρχεται εἰς μετάνοιαν.	The simple believes every word: but the prudent man betakes himself to after-thought.
16	16
σοφὸς φοβηθεὶς ἐξέκλινεν ἀπὸ κακοῦ, ὁ δὲ ἄφρων ἑαυτῷ πεποιθὼς μίγνυται ἀνόμῳ.	A wise man fears, and departs from evil; but the fool trusts in himself, and joins himself with the transgressor.

ὀξύθυμος πράσσει μετὰ ἀβουλίας, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος πολλὰ ὑποφέρει.	A passionate man acts inconsiderately; but a sensible man bears up under many things.

μεριοῦνται ἄφρονες κακίαν, οἱ δὲ πανοῦργοι κρατήσουσιν αἰσθήσεως.	Fools shall have mischief for their portion; but the prudent shall take fast hold of understanding.
19	19
ὀλισθήσουσι κακοὶ ἔναντι ἀγαθῶν, καὶ ἀσεβεῖς θεραπεύσουσι θύρας δικαίων.	Evil men shall fall before the good; and the ungodly shall attend at the gates of the righteous.

φίλοι μισήσουσι φίλους πτωχούς, φίλοι δὲ πλουσίων πολλοί.	Friends will hate poor friends; but the friends of the rich are many.
21	21
ὁ ἀτιμάζων πένητας ἁμαρτάνει, ἐλεῶν δὲ πτωχοὺς μακαριστός.	He that dishonours the needy sins: but he that has pity on the poor is most blessed.
22	22
πλανώμενοι τεκταίνουσι κακά, ἔλεον δὲ καὶ ἀλήθειαν τεκταίνουσιν ἀγαθοί. οὐκ ἐπίστανται ἔλεον καὶ πίστιν τέκτονες κακῶν, ἐλεημοσύναι δὲ καὶ πίστεις παρὰ τέκτοσιν ἀγαθοῖς.	They that go astray devise evils: but the good devise mercy and truth. The framers of evil do not understand mercy and truth: but compassion and faithfulness are with the framers of good.

ἐν παντὶ μεριμνῶντι ἔνεστι περισσόν, ὁ δὲ ἡδὺς καὶ ἀνάλγητος ἐν ἐνδείᾳ ἔσται.	With every one who is careful there is abundance: but the pleasure-taking and indolent shall be in want.

στέφανος σοφῶν πλοῦτος αὐτῶν, ἡ δὲ διατριβὴ ἀφρόνων κακή.	A prudent man is the crown of the wise: but the occupation of fools is evil.
25	25
ρύσεται ἐκ κακῶν ψυχὴν μάρτυς πιστός, ἐκκαίει δὲ ψεύδη δόλιος.	A faithful witness shall deliver a soul from evil: but a deceitful man kindles falsehoods.

ἐν φόβῳ Κυρίου ἐλπὶς ἰσχύος, τοῖς δὲ τέκνοις αὐτοῦ καταλείπει ἔρεισμα.	In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and he leaves his children a support.

πρόσταγμα Κυρίου πηγὴ ζωῆς, ποιεῖ δὲ ἐκκλίνειν ἐκ παγίδος θανάτου.	The commandment of the Lord is a fountain of life; and it causes men to turn aside from the snare of death.

ἐν πολλῷ ἔθνει δόξα βασιλέως, ἐν δὲ ἐκλείψει λαοῦ συντριβὴ δυνάστου.	In a populous nation is the glory of a king: but in the failure of people is the ruin of a prince.

μακρόθυμος ἀνὴρ πολὺς ἐν φρονήσει, ὁ δὲ ὀλιγόψυχος ἰσχυρῶς ἄφρων.	A man slow to wrath abounds in wisdom: but a man of impatient spirit is very foolish.

πραΰθυμος ἀνὴρ καρδίας ἰατρός, σὴς δὲ ὀστέων καρδία αἰσθητική.	A meek-spirited man is a healer of the heart: but a sensitive heart is a corruption of the bones.

ὁ συκοφαντῶν πένητα παροξύνει τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν, ὁ δὲ τιμῶν αὐτὸν ἐλεεῖ πτωχόν.	He that oppresses the needy provokes his Maker: but he that honours him has pity upon the poor.

ἐν κακίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀπωσθήσεται ἀσεβής, ὁ δὲ πεποιθὼς τῇ ἑαυτοῦ ὁσιότητι δίκαιος.	The ungodly shall be driven away in his wickedness: but he who is secure in his own holiness is just.

ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀγαθῇ ἀνδρὸς ἀναπαύσεται σοφίᾳ, ἐν δὲ καρδίᾳ ἀφρόνων οὐ διαγινώσκεται.	There is wisdom in the good heart of a man: but in the heart of fools it is not discerned.

δικαιοσύνη ὑψοῖ ἔθνος, ἐλασσονοῦσι δὲ φυλὰς ἁμαρτίαι.	Righteousness exalts a nation: but sins diminish tribes.

δεκτὸς βασιλεῖ ὑπηρέτης νοήμων, τῇ δὲ ἑαυτοῦ εὐστροφίᾳ ἀφαιρεῖται ἀτιμίαν.	An understanding servant is acceptable to a king; and by his good behaviour he removes disgrace.
Κεφάλαιο 15	Chapter 15

ΟΡΓΗ ἀπόλλυσι καὶ φρονίμους, ἀπόκρισις δὲ ὑποπίπτουσα ἀποστρέφει θυμόν, λόγος δὲ λυπηρὸς ἐγείρει ὀργάς.	Anger slays even wise men; yet a submissive answer turns away wrath: but a grievous word stirs up anger.

γλῶσσα σοφῶν καλὰ ἐπίσταται, στόμα δὲ ἀφρόνων ἀναγγέλλει κακά.	The tongue of the wise knows what is good: but the mouth of the foolish tells out evil things.

ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ ὀφθαλμοὶ Κυρίου, σκοπεύουσι κακούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς.	The eyes of the Lord behold both the evil and the good in every place.

ἴασις γλώσσης δένδρον ζωῆς, ὁ δὲ συντηρῶν αὐτὴν πλησθήσεται πνεύματος,	The wholesome tongue is a tree of life, and he that keeps it shall be filled with understanding.
5	5
ἄφρων μυκτηρίζει παιδείαν πατρός, ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων ἐντολὰς πανουργότερος.	A fool scorns his father's instruction: but he that keeps his commandments is more prudent. In abounding righteousness is great strength: but the ungodly shall utterly perish from the earth.

βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ ὁδοὶ ἀσεβοῦς, διώκοντας δὲ δικαιοσύνην ἀγαπᾷ.	The ways of an ungodly man are an abomination to the Lord; but he loves those that follow after righteousness.

παιδεία ἀκάκου γνωρίζεται ὑπὸ τῶν παριόντων, οἱ δὲ μισοῦντες ἐλέγχους τελευτῶσιν αἰσχρῶς.	The instruction of the simple is known by them that pass by; but they that hate reproofs die disgracefully.
11	11
ᾅδης καὶ ἀπώλεια φανερὰ παρὰ τῷ Κυρίῳ· πῶς οὐχὶ καὶ αἱ καρδίαι τῶν ἀνθρώπων;	Hell and destruction are manifest to the Lord; how shall not also be the hearts of men?
12	12
οὐκ ἀγαπήσει ἀπαίδευτος τοὺς ἐλέγχοντας αὐτόν, μετὰ δὲ σοφῶν οὐχ ὁμιλήσει.	An uninstructed person will not love those that reprove him; neither will he associate with the wise.
13	13
καρδίας εὐφραινομένης πρόσωπον θάλλει, ἐν δὲ λύπαις οὔσης σκυθρωπάζει.	When the heart rejoices the countenance is cheerful; but when it is in sorrow, the countenance is sad.

καρδία ὀρθὴ ζητεῖ αἴσθησιν, στόμα δὲ ἀπαιδεύτων γνώσεται κακά.	An upright heart seeks discretion; but the mouth of the uninstructed will experience evils.
15	15
πάντα τὸν χρόνον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ τῶν κακῶν προσδέχονται κακά, οἱ δὲ ἀγαθοὶ ἡσυχάζουσι διαπαντός.	The eyes of the wicked are always looking for evil things; but the good are always quiet.
16	16
κρεῖσσον μικρὰ μερὶς μετὰ φόβου Κυρίου ἢ θησαυροὶ μεγάλοι μετὰ ἀφοβίας.	Better is a small portion with the fear of the Lord, than great treasures without the fear of the Lord.

κρείσσων ξενισμὸς μετὰ λαχάνων πρὸς φιλίαν καὶ χάριν ἢ παράθεσις μόσχων μετὰ ἔχθρας.	Better is an entertainment of herbs with friendliness and kindness, than a feast of calves, with enmity.

ἀνὴρ θυμώδης παρασκευάζει μάχας, μακρόθυμος δὲ καὶ τὴν μέλλουσαν καταπραΰνει. 18α μακρόθυμος ἀνὴρ κατασβέσει κρίσεις, ὁ δὲ ἀσεβὴς ἐγείρει μᾶλλον.	A passionate man stirs up strife; but he that is slow to anger appeases even a rising one.
19	19
ὁδοὶ ἀεργῶν ἐστρωμέναι ἀκάνθαις, αἱ δὲ τῶν ἀνδρείων τετριμμέναι.	The ways of sluggards are strewn with thorns; but those of the diligent are made smooth.

υἱὸς σοφὸς εὐφραίνει πατέρα, υἱὸς δὲ ἄφρων μυκτηρίζει μητέρα αὐτοῦ.	A wise son gladdens his father; but a foolish son sneers at his mother.

ἀνοήτου τρίβοι ἐνδεεῖς φρενῶν, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος κατευθύνων πορεύεται.	The ways of a foolish man are void of sense; but a wise man proceeds on his way aright.

ὑπερτίθενται λογισμοὺς οἱ μὴ τιμῶντες συνέδρια, ἐν δὲ καρδίαις βουλευομένων μένει βουλή.	They that honour not councils put off deliberation; but counsel abides in the hearts of counsellors.

οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσῃ ὁ κακὸς αὐτῇ, οὐδὲ μὴ εἴπῃ καίριόν τι καὶ καλὸν τῷ κοινῷ.	A bad man will by no means attend to counsel; neither will he say anything seasonable, or good for the common weal.

ὁδοὶ ζωῆς διανοήματα συνετοῦ, ἵνα ἐκκλίνας ἐκ τοῦ ᾅδου σωθῇ.	The thoughts of the wise are ways of life, that he may turn aside and escape from hell.

οἴκους ὑβριστῶν κατασπᾷ Κύριος, ἐστήρισε δὲ ὅριον χήρας.	The Lord pulls down the houses of scorners; but he establishes the border of the widow.

βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ λογισμὸς ἄδικος, ἁγνῶν δὲ ρήσεις σεμναί.	An unrighteous thought is abomination to the Lord; but the sayings of the pure are held in honour.

ἐξόλλυσιν ἑαυτὸν ὁ δωρολήπτης, ὁ δὲ μισῶν δώρων λήψεις σώζεται. (Μασ. Ι´,	A receiver of bribes destroys himself; but he that hates the receiving of bribes is safe.

καρδίαι δικαίων μελετῶσι πίστεις, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἀποκρίνεται κακά. (Μασ. Ι´,	The hearts of the righteous meditate faithfulness; but the mouth of the ungodly answers evil things.

μακρὰν ἀπέχει ὁ Θεὸς ἀπὸ ἀσεβῶν, εὐχαῖς δὲ δικαίων ἐπακούει. (Μασ. Ι´,	God is far from the ungodly; but he hearkens to the prayers of the righteous.

θεωρῶν ὀφθαλμὸς καλὰ εὐφραίνει καρδίαν, φήμη δὲ ἀγαθὴ πιαίνει ὀστᾶ.	The eye that sees rightly rejoices the heart; and a good report fattens the bones.

ὃς ἀπωθεῖται παιδείαν, μισεῖ ἑαυτόν, ὁ δὲ τηρῶν ἐλέγχους ἀγαπᾷ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ.	He that rejects instruction hates himself; but he that minds reproofs loves his soul.

φόβος Θεοῦ παιδεία καὶ σοφία, καὶ ἀρχὴ δόξης ἀποκριθήσεται αὐτῇ.	The fear of the Lord is instruction and wisdom; and the highest honour will correspond therewith.
Κεφάλαιο 16	Chapter 16

ΠΑΝΤΑ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ ταπεινοῦ φανερὰ παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ, οἱ δὲ ἀσεβεῖς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῇ ὀλοῦνται.

ἀκάθαρτος παρὰ Θεῷ πᾶς ὑψηλοκάρδιος, χειρὶ δὲ χεῖρας ἐμβαλὼν ἀδίκως οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται.	Every one that is proud in heart is unclean before God, and he that unjustly strikes hands with hand shall not be held guiltless.

ἀρχὴ ὁδοῦ ἀγαθῆς τὸ ποιεῖν τὰ δίκαια, δεκτὰ δὲ παρὰ Θεῷ μᾶλλον ἢ θύειν θυσίας.	The beginning of a good way is to do justly; and it is more acceptable with God than to offer sacrifices.

ὁ ζητῶν τὸν Κύριον εὑρήσει γνῶσιν μετὰ δικαιοσύνης, οἱ δὲ ὀρθῶς ζητοῦντες αὐτὸν εὑρήσουσιν εἰρήνην. (Μασ.	He that seeks the Lord shall find knowledge with righteousness: and they that rightly seek him shall find peace.

πάντα τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Κυρίου μετὰ δικαιοσύνης· φυλάσσεται δὲ ὁ ἀσεβὴς εἰς ἡμέραν κακήν.	All the works of the Lord are done with righteousness; and the ungodly man is kept for the evil day.

μαντεῖον ἐπὶ χείλεσι βασιλέως, ἐν δὲ κρίσει οὐ μὴ πλανηθῇ τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ.	There is an oracle upon the lips of a king; and his mouth shall not err in judgment.

ροπὴ ζυγοῦ δικαιοσύνη παρὰ Κυρίῳ, τὰ δὲ ἔργα αὐτοῦ στάθμια δίκαια.	The poise of the balance is righteousness with the Lord; and his works are righteous measures.

βλέλυγμα βασιλεῖ ὁ ποιῶν κακά, μετὰ γὰρ δικαιοσύνης ἑτοιμάζεται θρόνος ἀρχῆς.	An evil-doer is an abomination to a king; for the throne of rule is established by righteousness.

δεκτὰ βασιλεῖ χείλη δίκαια, λόγους δὲ ὀρθοὺς ἀγαπᾷ.	Righteous lips are acceptable to a king; and he loves right words.
14	14
θυμὸς βασιλέως ἄγγελος θανάτου, ἀνὴρ δὲ σοφὸς ἐξιλάσεται αὐτόν.	The anger of a king is a messenger of death; but a wise man will pacify him.
15	15
ἐν φωτὶ ζωῆς υἱὸς βασιλέως, οἱ δὲ προσδεκτοὶ αὐτῷ ὥσπερ νέφος ὄψιμον.	The son of a king is in the light of life; and they that are in favour with him are as a cloud of latter rain.

νοσσιαὶ σοφίας αἱρετώτεραι χρυσίου, νοσσιαί δὲ φρονήσεως αἱρετώτεραι ὑπὲρ ἀργύριον.	The brood of wisdom is more to be chosen than gold, and the brood of prudence more to be chosen than silver.

τρίβοι ζωῆς ἐκκλίνουσιν ἀπὸ κακῶν, μῆκος δὲ βίου ὁδοὶ δικαιοσύνης. ὁ δεχόμενος παιδείαν ἐν ἀγαθοῖς ἔσται, ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων ἐλέγχους σοφισθήσεται. ὅς φυλάσσει τὰς ἑαυτοῦ ὁδούς, τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν, ἀγαπῶν δὲ ζωὴν αὐτοῦ φείσεται στόματος αὐτοῦ.	The paths of life turn aside from evil; and the ways of righteousness are length of life. He that receives instruction shall be in prosperity; and he that regards reproofs shall be made wise. He that keeps his ways, preserves his own soul; and he that loves his life will spare his mouth.

πρὸ συντριβῆς ἡγεῖται ὕβρις, πρὸ δὲ πτώματος κακοφροσύνη.	Pride goes before destruction, and folly before a fall.

κρείσσων πραΰθυμος μετὰ ταπεινώσεως ἢ ὃς διαιρεῖται σκῦλα μετὰ ὑβριστῶν.	Better is a meek-spirited man with lowliness, than one who divides spoils with the proud.

συνετὸς ἐν πράγμασιν εὑρετὴς ἀγαθῶν, πεποιθὼς δὲ ἐπὶ Θεῷ μακαριστός.	He who is skilful in business finds good: but he that trusts in God is most blessed.

τοὺς σοφοὺς καὶ συνετοὺς φαύλους καλοῦσιν, οἱ δὲ γλυκεῖς ἐν λόγῳ πλείονα ἀκούσονται.	Men call the wise and understanding evil: but they that are pleasing in speech shall hear more.

πηγὴ ζωῆς ἔννοια τοῖς κεκτημένοις, παιδεία δὲ ἀφρόνων κακή.	Understanding is a fountain of life to its possessors; but the instruction of fools is evil.

καρδία σοφοῦ νοήσει τὰ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἰδίου στόματος, ἐπὶ δὲ χείλεσι φορέσει ἐπιγνωμοσύνην.	The heart of the wise will discern the things which proceed from his own mouth; and on his lips he will wear knowledge.

κηρία μέλιτος λόγοι καλοί, γλύκασμα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἴασις ψυχῆς.	Good words are honeycombs, and the sweetness thereof is a healing of the soul.

εἰσὶν ὁδοὶ δοκοῦσαι εἶναι ὀρθαὶ ἀνδρί, τὰ μέντοι τελευταῖα αὐτῶν βλέπει εἰς πυθμένα ᾅδου.	There are ways that seem to be right to a man, but the end of them looks to the depth of hell.

ἀνὴρ ἐν πόνοις πονεῖ ἑαυτῷ καὶ ἐκβιάζεται τὴν ἀπώλειαν ἑαυτοῦ, ὁ μέντοι σκολιὸς ἐπὶ τῷ ἑαυτοῦ στόματι φορεῖ τὴν ἀπώλειαν.	A man who labours, labours for himself, and drives from him his own ruin.

ἀνὴρ ἄφρων ὀρύσσει ἑαυτῷ κακά, ἐπὶ δὲ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ χειλέων θησαυρίζει πῦρ.	But the perverse bears destruction upon his own mouth: a foolish man digs up evil for himself, and treasures fire on his own lips.

ἀνὴρ σκολιὸς διαπέμπεται κακά, καὶ λαμπτῆρα δόλου πυρσεύει κακοῖς καὶ διαχωρίζει φίλους.	A perverse man spreads mischief, and will kindle a torch of deceit with mischiefs; and he separates friends.

ἀνὴρ παράνομος ἀποπειρᾶται φίλων καὶ ἀπάγει αὐτοὺς ὁδοὺς οὐκ ἀγαθάς.	A transgressor tries to ensnare friends, and leads them in ways that are not good.

στηρίζων δὲ ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ διαλογίζεται διεστραμμένα, ὁρίζει δὲ τοῖς χείλεσιν αὐτοῦ πάντα τὰ κακά· οὗτος κάμινός ἐστι κακίας.	And the man that fixes his eyes devises perverse things, and marks out with his lips all evils: he is a furnace of wickedness.

στέφανος καυχήσεως γῆρας, ἐν δὲ ὁδοῖς δικαιοσύνης εὑρίσκεται.	Old age is a crown of honour, but it is found in the ways of righteousness.

κρείσσων ἀνὴρ μακρόθυμος ἰσχυροῦ, ὁ δὲ κρατῶν ὀργῆς κρείσσων καταλαμβανομένου πόλιν.	A man slow to anger is better than a strong man; and he that governs his temper better than he that takes a city.

εἰς κόλπους ἐπέρχεται πάντα τοῖς ἀδίκοις, παρὰ δὲ Κυρίου πάντα τὰ δίκαια.	All evils come upon the ungodly into their bosoms; but all righteous things come of the Lord.
Κεφάλαιο 17	Chapter 17

ΚΡΕΙΣΣΩΝ ψωμὸς μεθ᾿ ἡδονῆς ἐν εἰρήνη ἢ οἶκος πλήρης πολλῶν ἀγαθῶν καὶ ἀδίκων θυμάτων μετὰ μάχης.	Better is a morsel with pleasure in peace, than a house full of many good things and unjust sacrifices, with strife.

οἰκέτης νοήμων κρατήσει δεσποτῶν ἀφρόνων, ἐν δὲ ἀδελφοῖς διελεῖται μέρη.	A wise servant shall have rule over foolish masters, and shall divide portions among brethren.

ὥσπερ δοκιμάζεται ἐν καμίνῳ ἄργυρος καὶ χρυσός, οὕτως ἐκλεκταὶ καρδίαι παρὰ Κυρίῳ.	As silver and gold are tried in a furnace, so are choice hearts with the Lord.

κακὸς ὑπακούει γλώσσης παρανόμων, δίκαιος δὲ οὐ προσέχει χείλεσι ψευδέσιν.	A bad man hearkens to the tongue of transgressors: but a righteous man attends not to false lips.

ὁ καταγελῶν πτωχοῦ παροξύνει τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτόν, ὁ δὲ ἐπιχαίρων ἀπολλυμένῳ οὐκ ἀθῳωθήσεται· ὁ δὲ ἐπισπλαγχνιζόμενος ἐλεηθήσεται.	He that laughs at the poor provokes him that made him; and he that rejoices at the destruction of another shall not be held guiltless: but he that has compassion shall find mercy.

στέφανος γερόντων τέκνα τέκνων, καύχημα δὲ τέκνων πατέρες αὐτῶν. 6α τοῦ πιστοῦ ὅλος ὁ κόσμος τῶν χρημάτων, τοῦ δὲ ἀπίστου οὐδὲ ὀβολός.	Children's children are the crown of old men; and their fathers are the glory of children.

οὐχ ἁρμόσει ἄφρονι χείλη πιστά, οὐδὲ δικαίῳ χείλη ψευδῆ.	Faithful lips will not suit a fool; nor lying lips a just man.

μισθὸς χαρίτων ἡ παιδεία τοῖς χρωμένοις, οὗ δ᾿ ἂν ἐπιστρέψῃ εὐοδωθήσεται.	Instruction is to them that use it a gracious reward: and whithersoever it may turn, it shall prosper.

ὃς κρύπτει ἀδικήματα, ζητεῖ φιλίαν, ὃς δὲ μισεῖ κρύπτειν, διΐστησι φίλους καὶ οἰκείους.	He that conceals injuries seeks love; but he that hates to hide them separates friends and kindred.

συντρίβει ἀπειλὴ καρδίαν φρονίμου, ἄφρων δὲ μαστιγωθεὶς οὐκ αἰσθάνεται.	A threat breaks down the heart of a wise man; but a fool, though scourged, understands not.

ἀντιλογίας ἐγείρει πᾶς κακός, ὁ δὲ Κύριος ἄγγελον ἀνελεήμονα ἐκπέμψει αὐτῷ.	Every bad man stirs up strifes: but the Lord will send out against him an unmerciful messenger.

ἐμπεσεῖται μέριμνα ἀνδρὶ νοήμονι, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες διαλογιοῦνται κακά.	Care may befall a man of understanding; but fools will meditate evils.

ὃς ἀποδίδωσι κακὰ ἀντὶ ἀγαθῶν, οὐ κινηθήσεται κακὰ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ.	Whoso rewards evil for good, evil shall not be removed from his house.

ἐξουσίαν δίδωσι λόγοις ἀρχὴ δικαιοσύνης, προηγεῖται δὲ τῆς ἐνδείας στάσις καὶ μάχη.	Rightful rule gives power to words; but sedition and strife precede poverty.

ὃς δίκαιον κρίνει τὸν ἄδικον, ἄδικον δὲ τὸν δίκαιον, ἀκάθαρτος καὶ βδελυκτὸς παρὰ Θεῷ.	He that pronounces the unjust just, and the just unjust, is unclean and abominable with God.

ἱνατί ὑπῆρξε χρήματα ἄφρονι; κτήσασθαι γὰρ σοφίαν ἀκάρδιος οὐ δυνήσεται. 16α ὃς ὑψηλὸν ποιεῖ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ οἶκον, ζητεῖ συντριβήν, ὁ δὲ σκολιάζων τοῦ μαθεῖν ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά.	Why has the fool wealth? for a senseless man will not be able to purchase wisdom.

εἰς πάντα καιρὸν φίλος ὑπαρχέτω σοι, ἀδελφοὶ δὲ ἐν ἀνάγκαις χρήσιμοι ἔστωσαν· τούτου γὰρ χάριν γεννῶνται.	Have thou a friend for every time, and let brethren be useful in distress; for on this account are they born.

ἀνὴρ ἄφρων ἐπικροτεῖ καὶ ἐπιχαίρει ἑαυτῷ, ὡς καὶ ὁ ἐγγυώμενος ἐγγύῃ τῶν ἑαυτοῦ φίλων.	A foolish man applauds and rejoices over himself, as he also that becomes surety would make himself responsible for his own friends.

φιλαμαρτήμων χαίρει μάχαις, [ὑψῶν δὲ θύραν αὐτοῦ ζητεῖ συντριβήν].	A lover of sin rejoices in strifes;

ὁ δὲ σκληροκάρδιος οὐ συναντᾷ ἀγαθοῖς. ἀνὴρ εὐμετάβολος γλώσσῃ ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς κακά,	and the hard-hearted man comes not in for good. A man of a changeful tongue will fall into mischiefs;

καρδία δὲ ἄφρονος ὀδύνη τῷ κεκτημένῳ αὐτήν. οὐκ εὐφραίνεται πατὴρ ἐπὶ υἱῷ ἀπαιδεύτῳ, υἱὸς δὲ φρόνιμος εὐφραίνει μητέρα αὐτοῦ.	and the heart of a fool is grief to its possessor. A father rejoices not over an uninstructed son; but a wise son gladdens his mother.

καρδία εὐφραινομένη εὐεκτεῖν ποιεῖ, ἀνδρὸς δὲ λυπηροῦ ξηραίνεται τὰ ὀστᾶ.	A glad heart promotes health; but the bones of a sorrowful man dry up.

λαμβάνοντος δῶρα ἀδίκως ἐν κόλποις οὐ κατευοδοῦνται ὁδοί, ἀσεβὴς δὲ ἐκκλίνει ὁδοὺς δικαιοσύνης.	The ways of a man who unjustly receives gifts in his bosom do not prosper; and an ungodly man perverts the ways of righteousness.

πρόσωπον συνετὸν ἀνδρὸς σοφοῦ, οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ τοῦ ἄφρονος ἐπ᾿ ἄκρα γῆς.	The countenance of a wise man is sensible; but the eyes of a fool go to the ends of the earth.

ὀργὴ πατρὶ υἱὸς ἄφρων καὶ ὀδύνη τῇ τεκούσῃ αὐτόν.	A foolish son is a cause of anger to his father, and grief to her that bore him.

ζημιοῦν ἄνδρα δίκαιον οὐ καλόν, οὐδὲ ὅσιον ἐπιβουλεύειν δυνάσταις δικαίοις.	It is not right to punish a righteous man, nor is it holy to plot against righteous princes.

ὃς φείδεται ρῆμα προέσθαι σκληρόν, ἐπιγνώμων, μακρόθυμος δὲ ἀνὴρ φρόνιμος.	He that forbears to utter a hard word is discreet, and a patient man is wise.

ἀνοήτῳ ἐπερωτήσαντι σοφίαν σοφία λογισθήσεται, ἐνεὸν δέ τις ἑαυτὸν ποιήσας δόξει φρόνιμος εἶναι.	Wisdom shall be imputed to a fool who asks after wisdom: and he who holds his peace shall seem to be sensible.
Κεφάλαιο 18	Chapter 18

Προφάσεις ζητεῖ ἀνὴρ βουλόμενος χωρίζεσθαι ἀπὸ φίλων, ἐν παντὶ δὲ καιρῷ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται.	A man who wishes to separate from friends seeks excuses; but at all times he will be liable to reproach.

οὐ χρείαν ἔχει σοφίας ἐνδεὴς φρενῶν, μᾶλλον γὰρ ἄγεται ἀφροσύνῃ.	A senseless man feels no need of wisdom, for he is rather led by folly.

ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἀσεβὴς εἰς βάθος κακῶν, καταφρονεῖ, επέρχεται δὲ αὐτῷ ἀτιμία καὶ ὄνειδος.	When an ungodly man comes into a depth of evils, he despises them; but dishonour and reproach come upon him.

ὕδωρ βαθὺ λόγος ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός, ποταμὸς δὲ ἀναπηδύει καὶ πηγὴ ζωῆς.	A word in the heart of a man is a deep water, and a river and fountain of life spring forth.

θαυμάσαι πρόσωπον ἀσεβοῦς οὐ καλόν, οὐδὲ ὅσιον ἐκκλίνειν τὸ δίκαιον ἐν κρίσει.	It is not good to accept the person of the ungodly, nor is it holy to pervert justice in judgment.

χείλη ἄφρονος ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν εἰς κακά, τὸ δὲ στόμα αὐτοῦ τὸ θρασὺ θάνατον ἐπικαλεῖται.	The lips of a fool bring him into troubles, and his bold mouth calls for death.

στόμα ἄφρονος συντριβὴ αὐτῷ, τὰ δὲ χείλη αὐτοῦ παγὶς τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ.	A fool's mouth is ruin to him, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

ὀκνηροὺς καταβάλλει φόβος, ψυχαὶ δὲ ἀνδρογύνων πεινάσουσιν.	Fear casts down the slothful; and the souls of the effeminate shall hunger.

ὁ μὴ ἰώμενος ἑαυτὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὑτοῦ ἀδελφός ἐστι τοῦ λυμαινομένου ἑαυτόν.	A man who helps not himself by his labour is brother of him that ruins himself.

ἐκ μεγαλωσύνης ἰσχύος ὄνομα Κυρίου, αὐτῷ δὲ προσδραμόντες δίκαιοι ὑψοῦνται.	The name of the Lord is of great strength; and the righteous running to it are exalted.

ὕπαρξις πλουσίου ἀνδρὸς πόλις ὀχυρά, ἡ δὲ δόξα αὐτῆς μέγα ἐπισκιάζει.	The wealth of a rich man is a strong city; and its glory casts a broad shadow.

πρὸ συντριβῆς ὑψοῦται καρδία ἀνδρός, καὶ πρὸ δόξης ταπεινοῦται.	Before ruin a man's heart is exalted, and before honour it is humble.
13	13
ὃς ἀποκρίνεται λόγον πρὶν ἀκοῦσαι, ἀφροσύνη αὐτῷ ἐστι καὶ ὄνειδος.	Whoso answers a word before he hears a cause, it is folly and reproach to him.

θυμὸν ἀνδρὸς πραΰνει θεράπων φρόνιμος, ὀλιγόψυχον δὲ ἄνδρα τίς ὑποίσει;	A wise servant calms a man's anger; but who can endure a faint-hearted man?

καρδία φρονίμου κτᾶται αἴσθησιν, ὦτα δὲ σοφῶν ζητεῖ ἔννοιαν.	The heart of the sensible man purchases discretion; and the ears of the wise seek understanding.

δόμα ἀνθρώπου ἐμπλατύνει αὐτὸν καὶ παρὰ δυνάσταις καθιζάνει αὐτόν.	A man's gift enlarges him, and seats him among princes.

δίκαιος ἑαυτοῦ κατήγορος ἐν πρωτολογίᾳ, ὡς δ’ ἂν ἐπιβάλῃ ὁ ἀντίδικος ἐλέγχεται.	A righteous man accuses himself at the beginning of his speech, but when he has entered upon the attack, the adversary is reproved.

ἀντιλογίας παύει σιγηρός, ἐν δὲ δυναστείαις ὁρίζει.	A silent man quells strifes, and determines between great powers.
19	19
ἀδελφὸς ὑπὸ ἀδελφοῦ βοηθούμενος ὡς πόλις ὀχυρὰ καὶ ὑψηλή, ἰσχύει δὲ ὥσπερ τεθεμελιωμένον βασίλειον.	A brother helped by a brother is as a strong and high city; and is as strong as a well-founded palace.

ἀπὸ καρπῶν στόματος ἀνὴρ πίμπλησι κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ, ἀπὸ δὲ καρπῶν χειλέων αὐτοῦ ἐμπλησθήσεται.	A man fills his belly with the fruits of his mouth; and he shall be satisfied with the fruits of his lips.
21	21
θάνατος καὶ ζωὴ ἐν χειρὶ γλώσσης, οἱ δὲ κρατοῦντες αὐτῆς ἔδονται τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς.	Life and death are in the power of the tongue; and they that rule it shall eat the fruits thereof.

ὃς εὗρε γυναῖκα ἀγαθήν, εὗρε χάριτας, ἔλαβε δὲ παρὰ Θεοῦ ἱλαρότητα. 22α ὃς ἐκβάλλει γυναῖκα ἀγαθήν, ἐκβάλλει τὰ ἀγαθά, ὁ δὲ κατέχων μοιχαλίδα ἄφρων καὶ ἀσεβής.	He that has found a good wife has found favours, and has received gladness from God.
Κεφάλαιο 19	Chapter 19

3ΑΦΡΟΣΥΝΗ ἀνδρὸς λυμαίνεται τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ, τὸν δὲ Θεὸν αἰτιᾶται τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ.

πλοῦτος προστίθησι φίλους πολλούς, ὁ δὲ πτωχὸς καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὑπάρχοντος φίλου λείπεται.	Wealth acquires many friends; but the poor is deserted even of the friend he has.

μάρτυς ψευδὴς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται, ὁ δὲ ἐγκαλῶν ἀδίκως οὐ διαφεύξεται.	A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that accuses unjustly shall not escape.

πολλοὶ θεραπεύουσι πρόσωπα βασιλέων, πᾶς δὲ ὁ κακὸς γίνεται ὄνειδος ἀνδρί.	Many court the favour of kings; but every bad man becomes a reproach to another man.

πᾶς, ὃς ἀδελφὸν πτωχὸν μισεῖ, καὶ φιλίας μακρὰν ἔσται. ἔννοια ἀγαθὴ τοῖς εἰδόσιν αὐτὴν ἐγγιεῖ, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος εὑρήσει αὐτήν. ὁ πολλὰ κακοποιῶν τελεσιουργεῖ κακίαν, ὃς δὲ ἐρεθίζει λόγους οὐ σωθήσεται.	Every one who hates his poor brother shall also be far from friendship. Good understanding will draw near to them that know it, and a sensible man will find it. He that does much harm perfects mischief; and he that uses provoking words shall not escape.

ὁ κτώμενος φρόνησιν ἀγαπᾷ ἑαυτόν, ὃς δὲ φυλάσσει φρόνησιν, εὑρήσει ἀγαθά.	He that procures wisdom loves himself; and he that keeps wisdom shall find good.

μάρτυς ψευδὴς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται, ὃς δ᾿ ἂν ἐκκαύσῃ κακίαν, ἀπολεῖται ὑπ᾿ αὐτῆς.	A false witness shall not be unpunished; and whosoever shall kindle mischief shall perish by it.

οὐ συμφέρει ἄφρονι τρυφή, καὶ ἐὰν οἰκέτης ἄρξηται μεθ᾿ ὕβρεως δυναστεύειν.	Delight does not suit a fool, nor is it seemly if a servant should begin to rule with haughtiness.

ἐλεήμων ἀνὴρ μακροθυμεῖ, τὸ δὲ καύχημα αὐτοῦ ἐπέρχεται παρανόμοις.	A merciful man is long-suffering; and his triumph overtakes transgressors.

βασιλέως ἀπειλὴ ὁμοία βρυγμῷ λέοντος, ὥσπερ δὲ δρόσος ἐπὶ χόρτῳ, οὕτως τὸ ἱλαρὸν αὐτοῦ.	The threatening of a king is like the roaring of a lion; but as dew on the grass, so is his favour.

αἰσχύνη πατρὶ υἱὸς ἄφρων· οὐχ ἁγναὶ εὐχαὶ ἀπὸ μισθώματος ἑταίρας.	A foolish son is a disgrace to his father: vows paid out of the hire of a harlot are not pure.

οἶκον καὶ ὕπαρξιν μερίζουσι πατέρες παισί, παρὰ δὲ Κυρίου ἁρμόζεται γυνὴ ἀνδρί.	Fathers divide house and substance to their children: but a wife is suited to a man by the Lord.

δειλία κατέχει ἀνδρόγυνον, ψυχὴ δὲ ἀεργοῦ πεινάσει.	Cowardice possesses the effeminate man; and the soul of the sluggard shall hunger.

ὃς φυλάσσει ἐντολήν, τηρεῖ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν, ὁ δὲ καταφρονῶν τῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὁδῶν ἀπολεῖται.	He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall perish.

δανείζει Θεῷ ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχόν, κατὰ δὲ τὸ δόμα αὐτοῦ ἀνταποδώσει αὐτῷ.	He that has pity on the poor lends to the Lord; and he will recompense to him according to his gift.

παίδευε υἱόν σου, οὕτως γὰρ ἔσται εὔελπις, εἰς δὲ ὕβριν μὴ ἐπαίρου τῇ ψυχῇ σου.	Chasten thy son, for so he shall be hopeful; and be not exalted in thy soul to haughtiness.
19	19
κακόφρων ἀνὴρ πολλὰ ζημιωθήσεται· ἐὰν δὲ λοιμεύηται, καὶ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ προσθήσει.	A malicious man shall be severely punished, and if he commit injury, he shall also lose his life.

ἄκουε, υἱέ, παιδείαν πατρός σου, ἵνα σοφὸς γένῃ ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων σου.	Hear, son, the instruction of thy father, that thou mayest be wise at thy latter end.

πολλοὶ λογισμοὶ ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός, ἡ δὲ βουλὴ τοῦ Κυρίου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα μένει.	There are many thoughts in a man's heart; but the counsel of the Lord abides for ever.

καρπὸς ἀνδρὶ ἐλεημοσύνη, κρείσσων δὲ πτωχὸς δίκαιος ἢ πλούσιος ψεύστης.	Mercy is a fruit to a man: and a poor man is better than a rich liar.

φόβος Κυρίου εἰς ζωὴν ἀνδρί, ὁ δὲ ἄφοβος αὐλισθήσεται ἐν τόποις, οὗ οὐκ ἐπισκοπεῖται γνῶσις.	The fear of the Lord is life to a man: and he shall lodge without fear in places where knowledge is not seen.

ὁ ἐγκρύπτων εἰς τὸν κόλπον αὐτοῦ χεῖρας ἀδίκως, οὐδὲ τῷ στόματι οὐ μὴ προσαγάγῃ αὐτάς.	He that unjustly hides his hands in his bosom, will not even bring them up to his mouth.

λοιμοῦ μαστιγουμένου, ἄφρων πανουργότερος γίνεται· ἐὰν δὲ ἐλέγχῃς ἄνδρα φρόνιμον, νοήσει αἴσθησιν.	When a pestilent character is scourged, a simple man is made wiser: and if thou reprove a wise man, he will understand discretion.

ὁ ἀτιμάζων πατέρα καὶ ἀπωθούμενος μητέρα αὐτοῦ καταισχυνθήσεται καὶ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται.	He that dishonours his father, and drives away his mother, shall be disgraced and shall be exposed to reproach.

υἱὸς ἀπολειπόμενος φυλάξαι παιδείαν πατρὸς μελετήσει ρήσεις κακάς.	A son who ceases to attend to the instruction of a father will cherish evil designs.

ὁ ἐγγυώμενος παῖδα ἄφρονα καθυβρίσει δικαίωμα, στόμα δὲ ἀσεβῶν καταπίεται κρίσεις.	He that becomes surety for a foolish child will despise the ordinance: and the mouth of ungodly men shall drink down judgments.

ἑτοιμάζονται ἀκολάστοις μάστιγες, καὶ τιμωρίαι ὁμοίως ἄφροσιν.	Scourges are preparing for the intemperate, and punishments likewise for fools.
Κεφάλαιο 20	Chapter 20

ΑΚΟΛΑΣΤΟΝ οἶνος καὶ ὑβριστικὸν μέθη, πᾶς δὲ ἄφρων τοιούτοις συμπλέκεται.	Wine is an intemperate thing, and strong drink full of violence: but every fool is entangled with them.

οὐ διαφέρει ἀπειλὴ βασιλέως θυμοῦ λέοντος, ὁ δὲ παροξύνων αὐτὸν ἁμαρτάνει εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχήν.	The threat of a king differs not from the rage of a lion; and he that provokes him sins against his own soul.

δόξα ἀνδρὶ ἀποστρέφεσθαι λοιδορίας, πᾶς δὲ ἄφρων τοιούτοις συμπλέκεται.	It is a glory to a man to turn aside from railing; but every fool is entangled with such matters.

ὀνειδιζόμενος ὀκνηρὸς οὐκ αἰσχύνεται, ὡσαύτως καὶ ὁ δανειζόμενος σῖτον ἐν ἀμήτῳ.	A sluggard when reproached is not ashamed: so also he who borrows corn in harvest.

ὕδωρ βαθὺ βουλὴ ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός, ἀνὴρ δὲ φρόνιμος ἐξαντλήσει αὐτήν.	Counsel in a man's heart is deep water; but a prudent man will draw it out.

μέγα ἄνθρωπος καὶ τίμιον ἀνὴρ ἐλεήμων, ἄνδρα δὲ πιστὸν ἔργον εὑρεῖν.	A man is valuable, and a merciful man precious: but it is hard to find a faithful man.

ὃς ἀναστρέφεται ἄμωμος ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ, μακαρίους τοὺς παῖδας αὐτοῦ καταλείψει.	He that walks blameless in justice, shall leave his children blessed.

ὅταν βασιλεὺς δίκαιος καθίσῃ ἐπὶ θρόνου, οὐκ ἐναντιοῦται ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτοῦ πᾶν πονηρόν.	Whenever a righteous king sits on the throne, no evil thing can stand before his presence.

τίς καυχήσεται ἁγνὴν ἔχειν τὴν καρδίαν; ἢ τίς παρρησιάσεται καθαρὸς εἶναι ἀπὸ ἁμαρτιῶν;	Who will boast that he has a pure heart? or who will boldly say that he is pure from sins?

κακολογοῦντος πατέρα ἢ μητέρα σβεσθήσεται λαμπτήρ, αἱ δὲ κόραι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ ὄψονται σκότος.

μερὶς ἐπισπουδαζομένη ἐν πρώτοις, ἐν τοῖς τελευταίοις οὐκ εὐλογηθήσεται.
22
μὴ εἴπῃς· τίσομαι τὸν ἐχθρόν, ἀλλ᾿ ὑπόμεινον τὸν Κύριον, ἵνα σοι βοηθήσῃ.

στάθμιον μέγα καὶ μικρὸν καὶ μέτρα δισσά, ἀκάθαρτα ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ἀμφότερα καὶ ὁ ποιῶν αὐτά.	A large and small weight, and divers measures, are even both of them unclean before the Lord; and so is he that makes them.

ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν αὐτοῦ συμποδισθήσεται νεανίσκος μετὰ ὁσίου, καὶ εὐθεῖα ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτοῦ.	A youth when in company with a godly man, will be restrained in his devices, and then his way will be straight.

οὖς ἀκούει καὶ ὀφθαλμὸς ὁρᾷ· Κυρίου ἔργα καὶ ἀμφότερα.	The ear hears, and the eye sees: even both of them are the Lord's work.

μὴ ἀγάπα καταλαλεῖν, ἵνα μὴ ἐξαρθῇς· διάνοιξον τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου καὶ ἐμπλήσθητι ἄρτων.	Love not to speak ill, lest thou be cut off: open thine eyes, and be filled with bread.

βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ δισσὸν στάθμιον, καὶ ζυγὸς δόλιος οὐ καλὸν ἐνώπιον αὐτοῦ.	A double weight is an abomination to the Lord; and a deceitful balance is not good in his sight.
24	24
παρὰ Κυρίου εὐθύνεται τὰ διαβήματα ἀνδρί, θνητὸς δὲ πῶς ἂν νοήσαι τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ;	A man's goings are directed of the Lord: how then can a mortal understand his ways?
25	25
παγὶς ἀνδρὶ ταχύ τι τῶν ἰδίων ἁγιάσαι, μετὰ γὰρ τὸ εὔξασθαι μετανοεῖν γίνεται.	It is a snare to a man hastily to consecrate some of his own property: for in that case repentance comes after vowing.

λικμήτωρ ἀσεβῶν βασιλεὺς σοφός, καὶ ἐπιβαλεῖ αὐτοῖς τροχόν.	A wise king utterly crushes the ungodly, and will bring a wheel upon them.
27	27
φῶς Κυρίου πνοὴ ἀνθρώπων, ὃς ἐρευνᾷ ταμιεῖα κοιλίας.	The spirit of man is a light of the Lord, who searches the inmost parts of the belly.
28	28
ἐλεημοσύνη καὶ ἀλήθεια φυλακὴ βασιλεῖ, καὶ περικυκλώσουσιν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ.	Mercy and truth are a guard to a king, and will surround his throne with righteousness.

κόσμος νεανίαις σοφία, δόξα δὲ πρεσβυτέρων πολιαί.	Wisdom is an ornament to young men; and grey hairs are the glory of old men.

ὑπώπια καὶ συντρίμματα συναντᾷ κακοῖς, πληγαὶ δὲ εἰς ταμιεῖα κοιλίας.	Bruises and contusions befall bad men; and plagues shall come into the inward parts of their belly.
Κεφάλαιο 21	Chapter 21

1	1
ΩΣΠΕΡ ὁρμὴ ὕδατος, οὕτως καρδία βασιλέως ἐν χειρὶ Θεοῦ· οὗ ἐὰν θέλων νεύσῃ, ἐκεῖ ἔκλινεν αὐτήν.	As a rush of water, so is the king's heart in God's hand: he turns it whithersoever he may desire to point out.

πᾶς ἀνὴρ φαίνεται ἑαυτῷ δίκαιος, κατευθύνει δὲ καρδίας Κύριος.	Every man seems to himself righteous; but the Lord directs the hearts.
3	3
ποιεῖν δίκαια καὶ ἀληθεύειν ἀρεστὰ παρὰ Θεῷ μᾶλλον ἢ θυσιῶν αἷμα.	To do justly and to speak truth, are more pleasing to God than the blood of sacrifices.
4	4
μεγαλόφρων ἐν ὕβρει θρασυκάρδιος, λαμπτὴρ δὲ ἀσεβῶν ἁμαρτία.	A high-minded man is stout-hearted in his pride; and the lamp of the wicked is sin.

ὁ ἐνεργῶν θησαυρίσματα γλώσσῃ ψευδεῖ μάταια διώκει καὶ ἔρχεται ἐπὶ παγίδας θανάτου.	He that gathers treasures with a lying tongue pursues vanity on to the snares of death.

ὄλεθρος ἀσεβέσιν ἐπιξενωθήσεται, οὐ γὰρ βούλονται πράσσειν τὰ δίκαια.	Destruction shall lodge with the ungodly; for they refuse to do justly.
8	8
πρὸς τοὺς σκολιοὺς σκολιὰς ὁδοὺς ἀποστέλλει ὁ Θεός, ἁγνὰ γὰρ καὶ ὀρθὰ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ. 9κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐπὶ γωνίας ὑπαίθρου ἢ ἐν κεκονιαμένοις μετὰ ἀδικίας καὶ ἐν οἴκῳ κοινῷ.	To the froward God sends froward ways; for his works are pure and right.
10	10
ψυχὴ ἀσεβοῦς οὐκ ἐλεηθήσεται ὑπ᾿ οὐδενὸς τῶν ἀνθρώπων.	The soul of the ungodly shall not be pitied by any man.
11	11
ζημιουμένου ἀκολάστου πανουργότερος γίνεται ὁ ἄκακος, συνίων δὲ σοφὸς δέξεται γνῶσιν.	When an intemperate man is punished the simple becomes wiser: and a wise man understanding will receive knowledge.

συνίει δίκαιος καρδίας ἀσεβῶν καὶ φαυλίζει ἀσεβεῖς ἐν κακοῖς.	A righteous man understands the hearts of the ungodly: and despises the ungodly for their wickedness.
13	13
ὃς φράσσει τὰ ὧτα αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ ἐπακοῦσαι ἀσθενοῦς, καὶ αὐτὸς ἐπικαλέσεται, καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ εἰσακούων.	He that stops his ears from hearing the poor, himself also shall cry, and there shall be none to hear him.
14	14
δόσις λάθριος ἀνατρέπει ὀργάς, δώρων δὲ ὁ φειδόμενος θυμὸν ἐγείρει ἰσχυρόν.	A secret gift calms anger: but he that forbears to give stirs up strong wrath.
15	15
εὐφροσύνη δικαίων ποιεῖν κρίμα, ὅσιος δὲ ἀκάθαρτος παρὰ κακούργοις.	It is the joy of the righteous to do judgment: but a holy man is abominable with evil-doers.
16	16
ἀνὴρ πλανώμενος ἐξ ὁδοῦ δικαιοσύνης ἐν συναγωγῇ γιγάντων ἀναπαύσεται.	A man that wanders out of the way of righteousness, shall rest in the congregation of giants.
17	17
ἀνὴρ ἐνδεὴς ἀγαπᾷ εὐφροσύνην, φιλῶν οἶνον καὶ ἔλαιον εἰς πλοῦτον·	A poor man loves mirth, loving wine and oil in abundance;
18	18
περικάθαρμα δὲ δικαίου ἄνομος.	and a transgressor is the abomination of a righteous man.
19	19
κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐν γῇ ἐρήμῳ ἢ μετὰ γυναικὸς μαχίμου καὶ γλωσσώδους καὶ ὀργίλου.	It is better to dwell in a wilderness than with a quarrelsome and talkative and passionate woman.
20	20
θησαυρὸς ἐπιθυμητὸς ἀναπαύσεται ἐπὶ στόματος σοφοῦ, ἄφρονες δὲ ἄνδρες καταπίονται αὐτόν.	A desirable treasure will rest on the mouth of the wise; but foolish men will swallow it up.
21	21
ὁδὸς δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἐλεημοσύνης εὑρήσει ζωὴν καὶ δόξαν.	The way of righteousness and mercy will find life and glory.
22	22
πόλεις ὀχυρὰς ἐπέβη σοφὸς καὶ καθεῖλε τὸ ὀχύρωμα, ἐφ᾿ ᾧ ἐπεποίθεισαν οἱ ἀσεβεῖς.	A wise man assaults strong cities, and demolishes the fortress in which the ungodly trusted.
23	23
ὃς φυλάσσει τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν γλῶσσαν, διατηρεῖ ἐκ θλίψεως τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ.	He that keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble.
24	24
θρασὺς καὶ αὐθάδης καὶ ἀλαζὼν λοιμὸς καλεῖται, ὃς δὲ μνησικακεῖ, παράνομος.	A bold and self-willed and insolent man is called a pest: and he that remembers injuries is a transgressor.
25	25
ἐπιθυμίαι ὀκνηρὸν ἀποκτείνουσιν, οὐ γὰρ προαιροῦνται αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν τι.	Desires kill the sluggard; for his hands do not choose to do anything.
26	26
ἀσεβὴς ἐπιθυμεῖ ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐπιθυμίας κακάς, ὁ δὲ δίκαιος ἐλεᾷ καὶ οἰκτείρει ἀφειδῶς.	An ungodly man entertains evil desires all the day: but the righteous is unsparingly merciful and compassionate.

θυσίαι ἀσεβῶν βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ, καὶ γὰρ παρανόμως προσφέρουσιν αὐτάς.	The sacrifices of the ungodly are abomination to the Lord, for they offer them wickedly.

μάρτυς ψευδὴς ἀπολεῖται, ἀνὴρ δὲ ὑπήκοος φυλασσόμενος λαλήσει.	A false witness shall perish; but an obedient man will speak cautiously.
29	29
ἀσεβὴς ἀνὴρ ἀναιδῶς ὑφίσταται προσώπῳ, ὁ δὲ εὐθὴς αὐτὸς συνίει τὰς ὁδοὺς αὐτοῦ.	An ungodly man impudently withstands with his face; but the upright man himself understands his ways.

οὐκ ἔστι σοφία, οὐκ ἔστιν ἀνδρεία, οὐκ ἔστι βουλὴ πρὸς τὸν ἀσεβῆ.	There is no wisdom, there is no courage, there is no counsel against the ungodly.

ἵππος ἑτοιμάζεται εἰς ἡμέραν πολέμου, παρὰ δὲ Κυρίου ἡ βοήθεια.	A horse is prepared for the day of battle; but help is of the Lord.
Κεφάλαιο 22	Chapter 22

1	1
ΑΙΡΕΤΩΤΕΡΟΝ ὄνομα καλὸν ἢ πλοῦτος πολύς, ὑπὲρ δὲ ἀργύριον καὶ χρυσίον χάρις ἀγαθή,	A fair name is better than much wealth, and good favour is above silver and gold.

πλούσιος καὶ πτωχὸς συνήντησαν ἀλλήλοις, ἀμφοτέρους δὲ ὁ Κύριος ἐποίησε.	The rich and the poor meet together; but the Lord made them both.
3	3
πανοῦργος ἱδὼν πονηρὸν τιμωρούμενον κραταιῶς αὐτὸς παιδεύεται, οἱ δὲ ἄφρονες παρελθόντες ἐζημιώθησαν.	An intelligent man seeing a bad man severely punished is himself instructed, but fools pass by and are punished.

γενεὰ σοφίας φόβος Κυρίου καὶ πλοῦτος καὶ δόξα καὶ ζωή.	The fear of the Lord is the offspring of wisdom, and wealth, and glory, and life.

τρίβολοι καὶ παγίδες ἐν ὁδοῖς σκολιαῖς, ὁ δὲ φυλάσσων τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχὴν ἀφέξεται αὐτῶν.	Thistles and snares are in perverse ways; but he that keeps his soul will refrain from them.

πλούσιοι πτωχῶν ἄρξουσι, καὶ οἰκέται ἰδίοις δεσπόταις δανειοῦσι.	The rich will rule over the poor, and servants will lend to their own masters.

ὁ σπείρων φαῦλα θερίσει κακά, πληγὴν δὲ ἔργων αὐτοῦ συντελέσει. 8α ἄνδρα ἱλαρὸν καὶ δότην εὐλογεῖ ὁ Θεός, ματαιότητα δὲ ἔργων αὐτοῦ συντελέσει.	He that sows wickedness shall reap troubles; and shall fully receive the punishment of his deeds.
9	9
ὁ ἐλεῶν πτωχὸν αὐτὸς διατραφήσεται, τῶν γὰρ ἑαυτοῦ ἄρτων ἔδωκε τῷ πτωχῷ. 9α νίκην καὶ τιμὴν περιποιεῖται ὁ δῶρα δούς, τὴν μέντοι ψυχὴν ἀφαιρεῖται τῶν κεκτημένων.	He that has pity on the poor shall himself be maintained; for he has given of his own bread to the poor.

ἔκβαλε ἐκ συνεδρίου λοιμόν, καὶ συνεξελεύσεται αὐτῷ νεῖκος· ὅταν γὰρ καθίσῃ ἐν συνεδρίῳ, πάντας ἀτιμάζει.	Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonours all.

ἀγαπᾷ Κύριος ὁσίας καρδίας, δεκτοὶ δὲ αὐτῷ πάντες ἄμωμοι· χείλεσι ποιμαίνει βασιλεύς.	The Lord loves holy hearts, and all blameless persons are acceptable with him: a king rules with his lips.

οἱ δὲ ὀφθαλμοὶ Κυρίου διατηροῦσιν αἴσθησιν, φαυλίζει δὲ λόγους παράνομος.	But the eyes of the Lord preserve discretion; but the transgressor despises wise words.
13	13
προφασίζεται καὶ λέγει ὀκνηρός· λέων ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς, ἐν δὲ ταῖς πλατείαις φονευταί.	The sluggard makes excuses, and says, There is a lion in the ways, and murderers in the streets.
14	14
βόθρος βαθὺς στόμα παρανόμου, ὁ δὲ μισηθεὶς ὑπὸ Κυρίου ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς αὐτόν. 14α εἰσὶν ὁδοὶ κακαὶ ἐνώπιον ἀνδρός, καὶ οὐκ ἀγαπᾷ τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι ἀπ᾿ αὐτῶν· ἀποστρέφειν δὲ δεῖ ἀπὸ ὁδοῦ σκολιᾶς καὶ κακῆς.	The mouth of a transgressor is a deep pit; and he that is hated of the Lord shall fall into it.

ἄνοια ἐξῆπται καρδίας νέου, ράβδος δὲ καὶ παιδεία μακρὰν ἀπ᾿ αὐτοῦ.	Folly is attached to the heart of a child, but the rod and instruction are then far from him.

ὁ συκοφαντῶν πένητα πολλὰ ποιεῖ τὰ ἑαυτοῦ· δίδωσι δὲ πλουσίῳ ἐπ᾿ ἐλλάσσονι.	He that oppresses the poor, increases his own substance, yet gives to the rich so as to make it less.

Λόγοις σοφῶν παράβαλλε σὸν οὗς καὶ ἄκουε ἐμὸν λόγον, τὴν δὲ σὴν καρδίαν ἐπίστησον, ἵνα γνῷς, ὅτι καλοί εἰσι·	Incline thine ear to the words of wise men: hear also my word, and apply thine heart,

καὶ ἐὰν ἐμβάλῃς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν καρδίαν σου, εὐφρανοῦσί σε ἅμα ἐπὶ σοῖς χείλεσιν,	that thou mayest know that they are good: and if thou lay them to heart, they shall also gladden thee on thy lips.

ἵνα σου γένηται ἐπὶ Κύριον ἡ ἐλπὶς καὶ γνωρίσῃ σοι τὴν ὁδόν σου.	That thy hope may be in the Lord, and he may make thy way known to thee.
20	20
καὶ σὺ δὲ ἀπόγραψαι αὐτὰ σεαυτῷ τρισσῶς εἰς βουλὴν καὶ γνῶσιν ἐπὶ τὸ πλάτος τῆς καρδίας σου.	And do thou too repeatedly record them for thyself on the table of thine heart, for counsel and knowledge.

διδάσκω οὖν σε ἀληθῆ λόγον καὶ γνῶσιν ἀγαθὴν ὑπακούειν, τοῦ ἀποκρίνεσθαί σε λόγους ἀληθείας τοῖς προβαλλομένοις σοι.	I therefore teach thee truth, and knowledge good to hear; that thou mayest answer words of truth to them that question thee.

Μὴ ἀποβιάζου πένητα, πτωχὸς γάρ ἐστι, καὶ μὴ ἀτιμάσῃς ἀσθενῆ ἐν πύλαις·	Do no violence to the poor, for he is needy: neither dishonour the helpless man in the gates.

ὁ γὰρ Κύριος κρινεῖ αὐτοῦ τὴν κρίσιν, καὶ ρύσῃ σὴν ἄσυλον ψυχήν.	For the Lord will plead his cause, and thou shalt deliver thy soul in safety.

μὴ ἴσθι ἑταῖρος ἀνδρὶ θυμώδει, φίλῳ δὲ ὀργίλῳ μὴ συναυλίζου,	Be not companion to a furious man; neither lodge with a passionate man:

μήποτε μάθῃς τῶν ὁδῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ λάβῃς βρόχους τῇ σῇ ψυχῇ.	lest thou learn of his ways, and get snares to thy soul.
26	26
μὴ δίδου σεαυτὸν εἰς ἐγγύην αἰσχυνόμενος πρόσωπον·	Become not surety from respect of a man's person.
27	27
ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ ἔχῃς πόθεν ἀποτίσῃς, λήψονται τὸ στρῶμα τὸ ὑπὸ τὰς πλευράς σου.	For if those have not whence to give compensation, they will take the bed that is under thee.

μὴ μέταιρε ὅρια αἰώνια, ἃ ἔθεντο οἱ πατέρες σου.	Remove not the old landmarks, which thy fathers placed.

ὁρατικὸν ἄνδρα καὶ ὀξὺν ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ βασιλεῦσι δεῖ παρεστάναι καὶ μὴ παρεστάναι ἀνδράσι νωθροῖς.	It is fit that an observant man and one diligent in his business should attend on kings, and not attend on slothful men.
Κεφάλαιο 23	Chapter 23

ΕΑΝ καθίσῃς δειπνεῖν ἐπὶ τραπέζης δυναστῶν, νοητῶς νόει τὰ παρατιθέμενά σοι	If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee:

καὶ ἐπίβαλλε τὴν χεῖρά σου, εἰδὼς ὅτι τοιαῦτά σε δεῖ παρασκευάσαι· εἰ δὲ ἀπληστότερος εἶ,	and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such meats: but if thou art very insatiable,

μὴ ἐπιθύμει τῶν ἐδεσμάτων αὐτοῦ, ταῦτα γὰρ ἔχεται ζωῆς ψευδοῦς.	desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life.

μὴ παρεκτείνου πένης ὢν πλουσίῳ, τῇ δὲ σῇ ἐννοίᾳ ἀπόσχου.	If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom.

ἐὰν ἐπιστήσῃς τὸ σὸν ὄμμα πρὸς αὐτόν, οὐδαμοῦ φανεῖται· κατεσκεύασται γὰρ αὐτῷ πτέρυγες ὥσπερ ἀετοῦ, καὶ ὑποστρέφει εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ προεστηκότος αὐτοῦ.	If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master.

μὴ συνδείπνει ἀνδρὶ βασκάνῳ, μηδὲ ἐπιθύμει τῶν βρωμάτων αὐτοῦ·	Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats:

ὃν τρόπον γὰρ εἴ τις καταπίοι τρίχα, οὕτως ἐσθίει καὶ πίνει.	so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him:

μηδὲ πρός σε εἰσαγάγῃς αὐτὸν καὶ φάγῃς τὸν ψωμόν σου μετ᾿ αὐτοῦ· ἐξεμέσει γὰρ αὐτὸν καὶ λυμανεῖται τοὺς λόγους σου τοὺς καλούς.	for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words.

εἰς ὦτα ἄφρονος μηδὲν λέγε, μήποτε μυκτηρίσῃ τοὺς συνετοὺς λόγους σου.	Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words.

μὴ μεταθῇς ὅρια αἰώνια, εἰς δὲ κτῆμα ὀρφανῶν μὴ εἰσέλθῃς·	Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless:

ὁ γὰρ λυτρούμενος αὐτοὺς Κύριος κραταιός ἐστι καὶ κρινεῖ τὴν κρίσιν αὐτῶν μετὰ σοῦ.	for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee.

δὸς εἰς παιδείαν τὴν καρδίαν σου, τὰ δὲ ὦτά σου ἑτοίμασον λόγοις αἰσθήσεως.	Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion.
13	13
μὴ ἀπόσχῃ νήπιον παιδεύειν, ὅτι ἐὰν πατάξῃς αὐτὸν ράβδῳ, οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ·	Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die.
14	14
σὺ μὲν γὰρ πατάξεις αὐτὸν ράβδῳ, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐκ θανάτου ρύσῃ.	For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death.
15	15
υἱέ, ἐὰν σοφὴ γένηταί σου ἡ καρδία, εὐφρανεῖς καὶ τὴν ἐμὴν καρδίαν,	Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart;
16	16
καὶ ἐνδιατρίψει λόγοις τὰ σὰ χείλη πρὸς τὰ ἐμὰ χείλη, ἐὰν ὀρθὰ ὦσι.	and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right.
17	17
μὴ ζηλούτω ἡ καρδία σου ἁμαρτωλούς, ἀλλὰ ἐν φόβῳ Κυρίου ἴσθι ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν·	Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day.
18	18
ἐὰν γὰρ τηρήσῃς αὐτά, ἔσται σοι ἔκγονα, ἡ δὲ ἐλπίς σου οὐκ ἀποστήσεται.	For if thou shouldest keep these things, thou shalt have posterity; and thine hope shall not be removed.
19	19
ἄκουε, υἱέ, καὶ σοφὸς γίνου, καὶ κατεύθυνε ἐννοίας σῆς καρδίας·	Hear, my son, and be wise, and rightly direct the thoughts of thine heart.
20	20
μὴ ἴσθι οἰνοπότης, μηδὲ ἐκτείνου συμβουλαῖς κρεῶν τε ἀγορασμοῖς·	Be not a wine-bibber, neither continue long at feasts, and purchases of flesh:
21	21
πᾶς γὰρ μέθυσος καὶ πορνοκόπος πτωχεύσει, καὶ ἐνδύσεται διερρηγμένα καὶ ρακώδη πᾶς ὑπνώδης.	for every drunkard and whoremonger shall be poor; and every sluggard shall clothe himself with tatters and ragged garments.

ἄκουε, υἱέ, πατρὸς τοῦ γεννήσαντός σε καὶ μὴ καταφρόνει ὅτι γεγήρακέ σου ἡ μήτηρ.	Hearken, my son, to thy father which begot thee, and despise not thy mother because she is grown old.

ἀλήθειαν κτῆσαι καὶ μὴ ἀπώσῃ σοφίαν καὶ παιδείαν καὶ σύνεσιν.

καλῶς ἐκτρέφει πατὴρ δίκαιος, ἐπὶ δὲ υἱῷ σοφῷ εὐφραίνεται ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ.	A righteous father brings up his children well; and his soul rejoices over a wise son.

εὐφραινέσθω ὁ πατὴρ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ ἐπὶ σοί, καὶ χαιρέτω ἡ τεκοῦσά σε.	Let thy father and thy mother rejoice over thee, and let her that bore thee be glad.

δός μοι, υἱέ, σὴν καρδίαν, οἱ δὲ σοὶ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἐμὰς ὁδοὺς τηρείτωσαν·	My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

πίθος γὰρ τετρημένος ἐστὶν ἀλλότριος οἶκος, καὶ φρέαρ στενὸν ἀλλότριον·	For a strange house is a vessel full of holes; and a strange well is narrow.

οὗτος γὰρ συντόμως ἀπολεῖται, καὶ πᾶς παράνομος ἀναλωθήσεται.	For such a one shall perish suddenly; and every transgressor shall be cut off.

τίνι οὐαί; τίνι θόρυβος; τίνι κρίσεις; τίνι δὲ ἀηδίαι καὶ λέσχαι; τίνι συντρίμματα διακενῆς; τίνος πελιδνοὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοί;	Who has woe? who trouble? who has quarrels? and who vexations and disputes? who has bruises without a cause? whose eyes are livid?

οὐ τῶν ἐγχρονιζόντων ἐν οἴνοις; οὐ τῶν ἰχνευόντων ποῦ πότοι γίνονται;	Are not those of them that stay long at wine? are not those of them that haunt the places where banquets are? Be not drunk with wine; but converse with just men, and converse with them openly.

μὴ μεθύσκεσθε ἐν οἴνοις, ἀλλὰ ὁμιλεῖτε ἀνθρώποις δικαίοις καὶ ὁμιλεῖτε ἐν περιπάτοις· ἐὰν γὰρ εἰς τὰς φιάλας καὶ τὰ ποτήρια δῷς τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου, ὕστερον περιπατήσεις γυμνότερος ὑπέρου.	For if thou shouldest set thine eyes on bowls and cups, thou shalt afterwards go more naked than a pestle.

τὸ δὲ ἔσχατον ὥσπερ ὑπὸ ὄφεως πεπληγὼς ἐκτείνεται, καὶ ὥσπερ ὑπὸ κεράστου διαχεῖται αὐτῷ ὁ ἰός.	But at last such a one stretches himself out as one smitten by a serpent, and venom is diffused through him as by a horned serpent.

οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου ὅταν ἴδωσιν ἀλλοτρίαν, τὸ στόμα σου τότε λαλήσει σκολιά,	Whenever thine eyes shall behold a strange woman, then thy mouth shall speak perverse things.

καὶ κατακείσῃ ὥσπερ ἐν καρδίᾳ θαλάσσης καὶ ὥσπερ κυβερνήτης ἐν πολλῷ κλύδωνι.	And thou shalt lie as in the midst of the sea, and as a pilot in a great storm.

ἐρεῖς δέ· τύπτουσί με καὶ οὐκ ἐπόνεσα, καὶ ἐνέπαιξάν μοι, ἐγὼ δὲ οὐκ ᾔδειν· πότε ὄρθρος ἔσται, ἵνα ἐλθὼν ζητήσω μεθ᾿ ὧν συνελεύσομαι;	And thou shalt say, They smote me, and I was not pained; and they mocked me, and I knew it not: when will it be morning, that I may go and seek those with whom I may go in company?
Κεφάλαιο 24	Chapter 24

μὴ παραδῷς οἰκέτην εἰς χεῖρας δεσπότου, μήποτε καταράσηταί σε καὶ ἀφανισθῇς.	He shall be defiled in the evil day, and in the day of affliction, until he be utterly consumed.

ἔκγονον κακὸν πατέρα καταρᾶται, τὴν δὲ μητέρα οὐκ εὐλογεῖ.	Deliver them that are led away to death, and redeem them that are appointed to be slain; spare not thy help.
12	12
ἔκγονον κακὸν δίκαιον ἑαυτὸν κρίνει. τὴν δ᾿ ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπένιψεν.	But if thou shouldest say, I know not this man; know that the Lord knows the hearts of all; and he that formed breath for all, he knows all things, who renders to every man according to his works.

ἔκγονον κακὸν ὑψηλοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχει, τοῖς δὲ βλεφάροις αὐτοῦ ἐπαίρεται.	My son, eat honey, for the honeycomb is good, that thy throat may be sweetened.

ἔκγονον κακὸν μαχαίρας τοὺς ὀδόντας ἔχει καὶ τὰς μύλας τομίδας, ὥστε ἀναλίσκειν καὶ κατεσθίειν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ τοὺς πένητας αὐτῶν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων. (Μασ. ΚΔ´,	Thus shalt thou perceive wisdom in thy soul: for if thou find it, thine end shall be good, and hope shall not fail thee.

ἐὰν δὲ τοῦτο ποιῇς, ἥξει προπορευομένη ἡ πενία σου καὶ ἡ ἔνδειά σου ὥσπερ ἀγαθὸς δρομεύς. (Μασ. Λ´,	But if thou do this, thy poverty will come speedily; and thy want like a swift courier.

). Τῇ βδέλλῃ τρεῖς θυγατέρες ἦσαν ἀγαπήσει ἀγαπώμεναι, καὶ αἱ τρεῖς αὗται οὐκ ἐνεπίμπλασαν αὐτήν, καὶ ἡ τετάρτη οὐκ ἠρκέσθη εἰπεῖν· ἱκανόν.	Bring not an ungodly man into the dwelling of the righteous: neither be deceived by the feeding of the belly.

ᾅδης καὶ ἔρως γυναικὸς καὶ γῆ οὐκ ἐμπιπλαμένη ὕδατος καὶ ὕδωρ καὶ πῦρ οὐ μὴ εἴπωσιν· ἀρκεῖ·	For a righteous man will fall seven times, and rise again: but the ungodly shall be without strength in troubles.

ὀφθαλμὸν καταγελῶντα πατρὸς καὶ ἀτιμάζοντα γῆρας μητρός, ἐκκόψαισαν αὐτὸν κόρακες ἐκ τῶν φαράγγων καὶ καταφάγοισαν αὐτὸν νεοσσοὶ ἀετῶν.	If thine enemy should fall, rejoice not over him, neither be elated at his overthrow.

τρία δέ ἐστι ἀδύνατά μοι νοῆσαι, καὶ τὸ τέταρτον οὐκ ἐπιγινώσκω·	For the Lord will see it, and it will not please him, and he will turn away his wrath from him.
19	19
ἴχνη ἀετοῦ πετομένου καὶ ὁδοὺς ὄφεως ἐπὶ πέτρας καὶ τρίβους νηὸς ποντοπορούσης καὶ ὁδοὺς ἀνδρὸς ἐν νεότητι.	Rejoice not in evil-doers, neither be envious of sinners.

τοιαύτη ὁδὸς γυναικὸς μοιχαλίδος, ἥ, ὅταν πράξῃ, ἀπονιψαμένη, οὐδέν φησι πεπραχέναι ἄτοπον.	For the evil man shall have no posterity: and the light of the wicked shall be put out.
21	21
διὰ τριῶν σείεται ἡ γῆ, τὸ δὲ τέταρτον οὐ δύναται φέρειν·	My son, fear God and the king; and do not disobey either of them.
22	22
ἐὰν οἰκέτης βασιλεύσῃ καὶ ἄφρων πλησθῇ σιτίων	For they will suddenly punish the ungodly, and who can know the vengeance inflicted by both?
23	23
καὶ οἰκέτις ἐὰν ἐκβάλῃ τὴν ἑαυτῆς κυρίαν καὶ μισητὴ γυνὴ ἐὰν τύχῃ ἀνδρὸς ἀγαθοῦ.	And this thing I say to you that are wise for you to learn: It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

τέσσαρα δὲ ἐλάχιστα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, ταῦτα δέ ἐστι σοφώτερα τῶν σοφῶν·	He that says of the ungodly, He is righteous, shall be cursed by peoples, and hateful among the nations.

οἱ μύρμηκες, οἷς μὴ ἔστιν ἰσχὺς καὶ ἑτοιμάζονται θέρους τὴν τροφήν·	But they that reprove him shall appear more excellent, and blessing shall come upon them;

καὶ οἱ χοιρογρύλλιοι, ἔθνος οὐκ ἰσχυρόν, οἳ ἐποιήσαντο ἐν πέτραις τοὺς ἑαυτῶν οἴκους·	and men will kiss lips that answer well.

ἀβασίλευτόν ἐστιν ἡ ἀκρὶς καὶ στρατεύει ἀφ᾿ ἑνὸς κελεύσματος εὐτάκτως·	Prepare thy works for thy going forth, and prepare thyself for the field; and come after me, and thou shalt rebuild thine house.

καὶ καλαβώτης χερσὶν ἐρειδόμενος καὶ εὐάλωτος ὢν κατοικεῖ ἐν ὀχυρώμασι βασιλέως.	Be not a false witness against thy fellow citizen, neither exaggerate with thy lips.

τρία δέ ἐστιν, ἃ εὐόδως πορεύεται, καὶ τέταρτον, ὃ καλῶς διαβαίνει·	Say not, As he has treated me, so will I treat him, and I will avenge myself on him for that wherein he has injured me.

σκύμνος λέοντος ἰσχυρότερος κτηνῶν, ὃς οὐκ ἀποστρέφεται οὐδὲ καταπτήσσει κτῆνος,	A foolish man is like a farm, and a senseless man is like a vineyard.

καὶ ἀλέκτωρ ἐμπεριπατῶν θηλείαις εὔψυχος καὶ τράγος ἡγούμενος αἰπολίου καὶ βασιλεὺς δημηγορῶν ἐν ἔθνει.	If thou let him alone, he will altogether remain barren and covered with weeds; and he becomes destitute, and his stone walls are broken down.

ἐὰν πρόῃ σεαυτὸν ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ καὶ ἐκτείνῃς τὴν χεῖρά σου μετὰ μάχης, ἀτιμασθήσῃ.	Afterwards I reflected, I looked that I might receive instruction.

ἄμελγε γάλα, καὶ ἔσται βούτυρον· ἐὰν δὲ ἐκπιέζῃς μυκτῆρας, ἐξελεύσεται αἷμα· ἐὰν δὲ ἐξέλκῃς λόγους, ἐξελεύσονται κρίσεις καὶ μάχαι. (Μασ. ΛΑ´,	The sluggard says, I slumber a little, and I sleep a little, and for a little while I fold my arms across my breast.

). Οἱ ἐμοὶ λόγοι εἴρηνται ὑπὸ Θεοῦ, βασιλέως χρηματισμός, ὃν ἐπαίδευσεν ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ.	My son, envy not bad men, nor desire to be with them.

τί, τέκνον, τηρήσεις; τί; ρήσεις Θεοῦ. πρωτογενές, σοὶ λέγω, υἱέ· τί τέκνον ἐμῆς κοιλίας; τί τέκνον ἐμῶν εὐχῶν;	For their heart meditates falsehoods, and their lips speak mischiefs.

μὴ δῷς γυναιξὶ σὸν πλοῦτον, καὶ τὸν σὸν νοῦν καὶ βίον εἰς ὑστεροβουλίαν.	A house is built by wisdom, and is set up by understanding.

μετὰ βουλῆς πάντα ποίει, μετὰ βουλῆς οἰνοπότει· οἱ δυνάσται θυμώδεις εἰσίν, οἶνον δὲ μὴ πινέτωσαν,	By discretion the chambers are filled with all precious and excellent wealth.

ἵνα μὴ πιόντες ἐπιλάθωνται τῆς σοφίας καὶ ὀρθὰ κρῖναι οὐ μὴ δύνωνται τοὺς ἀσθενεῖς.	A wise man is better than a strong man; and a man who has prudence than a large estate.

δίδοτε μέθην τοῖς ἐν λύπαις καὶ οἶνον πίνειν τοῖς ἐν ὀδύναις,	War is carried on with generalship, and aid is supplied to the heart of a counsellor.

ἵνα ἐπιλάθωνται τῆς πενίας καὶ τῶν πόνων μὴ μνησθῶσιν ἔτι.	Wisdom and good understanding are in the gates of the wise: the wise turn not aside from the mouth of the Lord,

ἄνοιγε σὸν στόμα λόγῳ Θεοῦ, καὶ κρῖνε πάντας ὑγιῶς.	but deliberate in council. Death befalls uninstructed men.

ἄνοιγε σὸν στόμα καὶ κρῖνε δικαίως, διάκρινε δὲ πένητα καὶ ἀσθενῆ.	The fool also dies in sins; and uncleanness attaches to a pestilent man.
Κεφάλαιο 25	Chapter 25

ΑΥΤΑΙ αἱ παιδεῖαι Σολομῶντος αἱ ἀδιάκριτοι, ἃς ἐξεγράψαντο οἱ φίλοι ᾿Εζεκίου τοῦ βασιλέως τῆς ᾿Ιουδαίας.	These are the miscellaneous instructions of Solomon, which the friends of Ezekias king of Judea copied out.

Δόξα Θεοῦ κρύπτει λόγον, δόξα δὲ βασιλέως τιμᾷ πράγματα.	The glory of God conceals a matter: but the glory of a king honours business.
3	3
οὐρανὸς ὑψηλός, γῆ δὲ βαθεῖα, καρδία δὲ βασιλέως ἀνεξέλεγκτος.	Heaven is high, and earth is deep, and a king's heart is unsearchable.
4	4
τύπτε ἀδόκιμον ἀργύριον, καὶ καθαρισθήσεται καθαρὸν ἅπαν·	Beat the drossy silver, and it shall be made entirely pure.
5	5
κτεῖνε ἀσεβεῖς ἐκ προσώπου βασιλέως, καὶ κατορθώσει ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ ὁ θρόνος αὐτοῦ.	Slay the ungodly from before the king, and his throne shall prosper in righteousness.

μὴ ἀλαζονεύου ἐνώπιον βασιλέως, μηδὲ ἐν τόποις δυναστῶν ὑφίστασο·	Be not boastful in the presence of the king, and remain not in the places of princes;

κρεῖσσον γάρ σοι τὸ ρηθῆναι· ἀνάβαινε πρός με ἢ ταπεινῶσαί σε ἐν προσώπῳ δυνάστου. ἃ εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί σου, λέγε.	for it is better for thee that it should be said, Come up to me, than that one should humble thee in the presence of the prince; speak of that which thine eyes have seen.

μὴ πρόσπιπτε εἰς μάχην ταχέως, ἵνα μὴ μεταμεληθῇς ἐπ᾿ ἐσχάτων. ἡνίκα ἄν σε ὀνειδίσῃ ὁ σὸς φίλος,	Get not suddenly into a quarrel, lest thou repent at last.

ἀναχώρει εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω μὴ καταφρόνει,	Whenever thy friend shall reproach thee, retreat backward, despise him not;

μή σε ὀνειδίσῃ μὲν ὁ φίλος, ἡ δὲ μάχη σου καὶ ἡ ἔχθρα οὐκ ἀπέσται, ἀλλὰ ἔσται σοι ἴση θανάτῳ. 10α χάρις καὶ φιλία ἐλευθεροῖ, ἃς τήρησον σεαυτῷ, ἵνα μὴ ἐπονείδιστος γένῃ, ἀλλὰ φύλαξον τὰς ὁδούς σου εὐσυναλλάκτως.	lest thy friend continue to reproach thee, so thy quarrel and enmity shall not depart, but shall be to thee like death.

μῆλον χρυσοῦν ἐν ὁρμίσκῳ σαρδίου, οὕτως εἰπεῖν λόγον.	As a golden apple in a necklace of sardius, so is it to speak a wise word.

εἰς ἐνώτιον χρυσοῦν καὶ σάρδιον πολυτελὲς δέδεται, λόγος σοφὸς εἰς εὐήκοον οὖς.	In an ear-ring of gold a precious sardius is also set; so is a wise word to an obedient ear.

ὥσπερ ἔξοδος χιόνος ἐν ἀμήτῳ κατὰ καῦμα ὠφελεῖ, οὕτως ἄγγελος πιστὸς τοὺς ἀποστείλαντας αὐτόν· ψυχὰς γὰρ τῶν αὐτῷ χρωμένων ὠφελεῖ.	As a fall of snow in the time of harvest is good against heat, so a faithful messenger refreshes those that send him; for he helps the souls of his employers.

ὥσπερ ἄνεμοι καὶ νέφη καὶ ὑετοὶ ἐπιφανέστατα, οὕτως ὁ καυχώμενος ἐπὶ δόσει ψευδεῖ.	As winds and clouds and rains are most evident objects, so is he that boasts of a false gift.

ἐν μακροθυμίᾳ εὐοδία βασιλεῦσι, γλῶσσα δὲ μαλακὴ συντρίβει ὀστᾶ.	In long-suffering is prosperity to kings, and a soft tongue breaks the bones.

μέλι εὑρὼν φάγε τὸ ἱκανόν, μήποτε πλησθεὶς ἐξεμέσῃς.	Having found honey, eat only what is enough, lest haply thou be filled, and vomit it up.

ὁδὸς κακοῦ καὶ ποὺς παρανόμου ὀλεῖται ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κακῇ.	The way of the wicked and the foot of the transgressor shall perish in an evil day.

ὥσπερ ὄξος ἕλκει ἀσύμφορον, οὕτως προσπεσὸν πάθος ἐν σώματι καρδίαν λυπεῖ. 20α ὥσπερ σὴς ἐν ἱματίῳ καὶ σκώληξ ξύλῳ, οὕτως λύπη ἀνδρὸς βλάπτει καρδίαν.	As vinegar is bad for a sore, so trouble befalling the body afflicts the heart.

ἐὰν πεινᾷ ὁ ἐχθρός σου, ψώμιζε αὐτόν, ἐὰν διψᾷ, πότιζε αὐτόν·	If thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink;

τοῦτο γὰρ ποιῶν ἄνθρακας πυρὸς σωρεύσεις ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ, ὁ δὲ Κύριος ἀνταποδώσει σοι ἀγαθά.	for so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the Lord shall reward thee with good.

ἄνεμος Βορέας ἐξεγείρει νέφη, πρόσωπον δὲ ἀναιδὲς γλῶσσαν ἐρεθίζει.	The north wind raises clouds; so an impudent face provokes the tongue.

κρεῖσσον οἰκεῖν ἐπὶ γωνίας δώματος ἢ μετὰ γυναικὸς λοιδόρου ἐν οἰκίᾳ κοινῇ.	It is better to dwell on a corner of the roof, than with a railing woman in an open house.

ὥσπερ ὕδωρ ψυχρὸν ψυχῇ διψώσῃ προσηνές, οὕτως ἀγγελία ἀγαθὴ ἐκ γῆς μακρόθεν.	As cold water is agreeable to a thirsting soul, so is a good message from a land far off.

ὥσπερ εἴ τις πηγὴ φράσσοι καὶ ὕδατος ἔξοδον λυμαίνοιτο, οὕτως ἄκοσμον δίκαιον πεπτωκέναι ἐνώπιον ἀσεβοῦς.	As if one should stop a well, and corrupt a spring of water, so is it unseemly for a righteous man to fall before an ungodly man.

ἐσθίειν μέλι πολὺ οὐ καλόν, τιμᾶ δὲ χρὴ λόγους ἐνδόξους.	It is not good to eat much honey; but it is right to honour venerable sayings.

ὥσπερ πόλις τὰ τείχει καταβεβλημένη καὶ ἀτείχιστος, οὕτως ἀνὴρ ὃς οὐ μετὰ βουλῆς τι πράσσει.	As a city whose walls are broken down, and which is unfortified, so is a man who does anything without counsel.
Κεφάλαιο 26	Chapter 26

ΩΣΠΕΡ δρόσος ἐν ἀμήτῳ καὶ ὥσπερ ὑετὸς ἐν θέρει, οὕτως οὐκ ἔστιν ἄφρονι τιμή.	As dew in harvest, and as rain in summer, so honour is not seemly for a fool.

ὥσπερ ὄρνεα πέταται καὶ στρουθοί, οὕτως ἀρὰ ματαία οὐκ ἐπελεύσεται οὐδενί.	As birds and sparrows fly, so a curse shall not come upon any one without a cause.

ὥσπερ μάστιξ ἵππῳ καὶ κέντρον ὄνῳ, οὕτως ράβδος ἔθνει παρανόμῳ.	As a whip for a horse, and a goad for an ass, so is a rod for a simple nation.

μὴ ἀποκρίνου ἄφρονι πρὸς τὴν ἐκείνου ἀφροσύνην, ἵνα μὴ ὅμοιος γένῃ αὐτῷ·	Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou become like him.

ἀλλὰ ἀποκρίνου ἄφρονι κατὰ τὴν ἀφροσύνην αὐτοῦ, ἵνα μὴ φαίνηται σοφός παρ᾿ ἑαυτῷ.	Yet answer a fool according to his folly, lest he seem wise in his own conceit.

ἐκ τῶν ὁδῶν ἑαυτοῦ ὄνειδος ποιεῖται ὁ ἀποστείλας δι᾿ ἀγγέλου ἄφρονος λόγον.	He that sends a message by a foolish messenger procures for himself a reproach from his own ways.

ἀφελοῦ πορείαν σκελῶν καὶ παρανομίαν ἐκ στόματος ἀφρόνων.	As well take away the motion of the legs, as transgression from the mouth of fools.

ὃς ἀποδεσμεύει λίθον ἐν σφενδόνῃ, ὅμοιός ἐστι τῷ διδόντι ἄφρονι δόξαν.	He that binds up a stone in a sling, is like one that gives glory to a fool.

ἄκανθαι φύονται ἐν χειρὶ μεθύσου, δουλεία δὲ ἐν χειρὶ τῶν ἀφρόνων.	Thorns grow in the hand of a drunkard, and servitude in the hand of fools.

πολλὰ χειμάζεται πᾶσα σάρξ ἀφρόνων· συντρίβεται γὰρ ἡ ἔκστασις αὐτῶν.	All the flesh of fools endures much hardship; for their fury is brought to nought.

ὥσπερ κύων ὅταν ἐπέλθῃ ἐπὶ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ ἔμετον καὶ μισητὸς γένηται, οὕτως ἄφρων τῇ ἑαυτοῦ κακίᾳ ἀναστρέψας ἐπὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίαν. 11α ἔστιν αἰσχύνη ἐπάγουσα ἁμαρτίαν, καί ἐστιν αἰσχύνη δόξα καὶ χάρις.	As when a dog goes to his own vomit, and becomes abominable, so is a fool who returns in his wickedness to his own sin.

εἶδον ἄνδρα δόξαντα παρ᾿ αὑτῷ σοφὸν εἶναι, ἐλπίδα μέντοι ἔσχε μᾶλλον ἄφρων αὐτοῦ.	I have seen a man who seemed to himself to be wise; but a fool had more hope than he.

λέγει ὀκνηρὸς ἀποστελλόμενος εἰς ὁδόν· λέων ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς, ἐν δὲ ταῖς πλατείαις φονευταί.	A sluggard when sent on a journey says, There is a lion in the ways, and there are murderers in the streets.

ὥσπερ θύρα στρέφεται ἐπὶ τοῦ στρόφιγγος, οὕτως ὀκνηρὸς ἐπὶ τῆς κλίνης αὐτοῦ.	As a door turns on the hinge, so does a sluggard on his bed.

κρύψας ὀκνηρὸς τὴν χεῖρα ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ αὐτοῦ, οὐ δυνήσεται ἐπενεγκεῖν ἐπὶ στόμα.	A sluggard having hid his hand in his bosom, will not be able to bring it up to his mouth.

σοφώτερος ἑαυτῷ ὀκνηρὸς φαίνεται τοῦ ἐν πλησμονῇ ἀποκομίζοντος ἀγγελίαν.	A sluggard seems to himself wiser than one who most satisfactorily brings back a message.

ὥσπερ ὁ κρατῶν κέρκου κυνός, οὕτως ὁ προεστὼς ἀλλοτρίας κρίσεως.	As he that lays hold of a dog's tail, so is he that makes himself the champion of another's cause.

ὥσπερ οἱ ἰώμενοι προβάλλουσι λόγους εἰς ἀνθρώπους, ὁ δὲ ἀπαντήσας τῷ λόγῳ πρῶτος ὑποσκελισθήσεται,	As those who need correction put forth fair words to men, and he that first falls in with the proposal will be overthrown;

οὕτως πάντες οἱ ἐνεδρεύοντες τοὺς ἑαυτῶν φίλους, ὅταν δὲ ὁραθῶσι, λέγουσι ὅτι παίζων ἔπραξα.	so are all that lay wait for their own friends, and when they are discovered, say, I did it in jest.

ἐν πολλοῖς ξύλοις θάλλει πῦρ, ὅπου δὲ οὐκ ἔστι δίθυμος, ἡσυχάζει μάχη.	With much wood fire increases; but where there is not a double-minded man, strife ceases.

ἐσχάρα ἄνθραξι καὶ ξύλα πυρί, ἀνὴρ δὲ λοίδορος εἰς ταραχὴν μάχης.	A hearth for coals, and wood for fire; and a railing man for the tumult of strife.

λόγοι κερκώπων μαλακοί, οὗτοι δὲ τύπτουσιν εἰς ταμιεῖα σπλάγχνων.	The words of cunning knaves are soft; but they smite even to the inmost parts of the bowels.

ἀργύριον διδόμενον μετὰ δόλου, ὥσπερ ὄστρακον ἡγητέον. χείλη λεῖα καρδίαν καλύπτει λυπηράν.	Silver dishonestly given is to be considered as a potsherd: smooth lips cover a grievous heart.

χείλεσι πάντα ἐπινεύει ἀποκλαιόμενος ἐχθρός, ἐν δὲ τῇ καρδίᾳ τεκταίνεται δόλους.	A weeping enemy promises all things with his lips, but in his heart he contrives deceit.

ἐάν σου δέηται ὁ ἐχθρὸς μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ, μὴ πεισθῆς, ἑπτὰ γάρ εἰσι πονηρίαι ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ.	Though thine enemy intreat thee with a loud voice, consent not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.

ὁ κρύπτων ἔχθραν συνίστησι δόλον, ἐκκαλύπτει δὲ τὰς ἑαυτοῦ ἁμαρτίας εὔγνωστος ἐν συνεδρίοις.	He that hides enmity frames deceit: but being easily discerned, exposes his own sins in the public assemblies.

ὁ ὀρύσσων βόθρον τῷ πλησίον ἐμπεσεῖται εἰς αὐτόν, ὁ δὲ κυλίων λίθον ἐφ᾿ ἑαυτὸν κυλίει.	He that digs a pit for his neighbour shall fall into it: and he that rolls a stone, rolls it upon himself.

γλῶσσα ψευδὴς μισεῖ ἀλήθειαν, στόμα δὲ ἄστεγον ποιεῖ ἀκαταστασίας.	A lying tongue hates the truth; and an unguarded mouth causes tumults.
Κεφάλαιο 27	Chapter 27

ΜΗ καυχῶ τὰ εἰς αὔριον, οὐ γὰρ γινώσκεις τί τέξεται ἡ ἐπιοῦσα.	Boast not of to-morrow; for thou knowest not what the next day shall bring forth.

ἐγκωμιαζέτω σε ὁ πέλας καὶ μὴ τὸ σὸν στόμα, ἀλλότριος καὶ μὴ τὰ σὰ χείλη.	Let thy neighbour, and not thine own mouth, praise thee; a stranger, and not thine own lips.

βαρὺ λίθος καὶ δυσβάστακτον ἄμμος, ὀργὴ δὲ ἄφρονος βαρυτέρα ἀμφοτέρων.	A stone is heavy, and sand cumbersome; but a fool's wrath is heavier than both.

ἀνελεήμων θυμὸς καὶ ὀξεῖα ὀργή, ἀλλ᾿ οὐδένα ὑφίσταται ζῆλος.	Wrath is merciless, and anger sharp: but envy can bear nothing.

κρείσσους ἔλεγχοι ἀποκεκαλυμμένοι κρυπτομένης φιλίας.	Open reproofs are better than secret love.

ἀξιοπιστόστερά εἰσι τραύματα φίλου ἢ ἐκούσια φιλήματα ἐχθροῦ.	The wounds of a friend are more to be trusted than the spontaneous kisses of an enemy.

ψυχὴ ἐν πλησμονῇ οὖσα κηρίοις ἐμπαίζει, ψυχῇ δὲ ἐνδεεῖ καὶ τὰ πικρὰ γλυκέα φαίνεται.	A full soul scorns honeycombs; but to a hungry soul even bitter things appear sweet.

ὥσπερ ὅταν ὄρνεον καταπετασθῇ ἐκ τῆς ἰδίας νοσσιᾶς, οὕτως ἄνθρωπος δουλοῦται ὅταν ἀποξενωθῇ ἐκ τῶν ἰδίων τόπων.	As when a bird flies down from its own nest, so a man is brought into bondage whenever he estranges himself from his own place.

μύροις καὶ οἴνοις καὶ θυμιάμασι τέρπεται καρδία, καταρρήγνυται δὲ ὑπὸ συμπτωμάτων ψυχή.	The heart delights in ointments and wines and perfumes: but the soul is broken by calamities.

φίλον σὸν ἢ φίλον πατρῷον μὴ ἐγκαταλίπῃς, εἰς δὲ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου μὴ εἰσέλθης ἀτυχῶν· κρείσσων φίλος ἐγγὺς ἢ ἀδελφὸς μακρὰν οἰκῶν.	Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; and when thou art in distress go not into thy brother's house: better is a friend that is near than a brother living far off.

σοφὸς γίνου, υἱέ, ἵνα σου εὐφραίνηται ἡ καρδία, καὶ ἀπόστρεψον ἀπὸ σοῦ ἐπονειδίστους λόγους.	Son, be wise, that thy heart may rejoice; and remove thou from thyself reproachful words.

πανοῦργος κακῶν ἐπερχομένων ἀπεκρύβη, ἄφρονες δὲ ἐπελθόντες ζημίαν τίσουσιν.	A wise man, when evils are approaching, hides himself; but fools pass on, and will be punished.

ἀφελοῦ τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ, παρῆλθε γὰρ ὑβριστής, ὅστις τὰ ἀλλότρια λυμαίνεται.	Take away the man's garment, (for a scorner has passed by) whoever lays waste another's goods.

ὃς ἂν εὐλογῇ φίλον τὸ πρωΐ μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ, καταρωμένου οὐδὲν διαφέρειν δόξει.	Whosoever shall bless a friend in the morning with a loud voice, shall seem to differ nothing from one who curses him.

σταγόνες ἐκβάλλουσιν ἄνθρωπον ἐν ἡμέρᾳ χειμερινῇ ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ, ὡσαύτως καὶ γυνὴ λοίδορος ἐκ τοῦ ἱδίου οἴκου.	On a stormy day drops of rain drive a man out of his house; so also does a railing woman drive a man out of his own house.

Βορέας σκληρὸς ἄνεμος, ὀνόματι δὲ ἐπιδέξιος καλεῖται.	The north wind is sharp, but it is called by name propitious.

σίδηρος σίδηρον ὀξύνει, ἀνὴρ δὲ παροξύνει πρόσωπον ἑταίρου.	Iron sharpens iron; and a man sharpens his friend's countenance.

ὃς φυτεύει συκῆν φάγεται τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς, ὃς δὲ φυλάσσει τὸν ἑαυτοῦ κύριον, τιμηθήσεται.	He that plants a fig-tree shall eat the fruits of it: so he that waits on his own master shall be honoured.

ὥσπερ οὐκ ὅμοια πρόσωπα προσώποις, οὕτως οὐδὲ αἱ διάνοιαι τῶν ἀνθρώπων.	As faces are not like other faces, so neither are the thoughts of men.

ᾅδης καὶ ἀπώλεια οὐκ ἐμπίμπλανται, ὡσαύτως καὶ οἱ ὁφθαλμοὶ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἄπληστοι. 20α βδέλυγμα Κυρίῳ στηρίζων ὀφθαλμόν, καὶ οἱ ἀπαίδευτοι ἀκρατεῖς γλώσσῃ.	Hell and destruction are not filled; so also are the eyes of men insatiable.

δοκίμιον ἀργυρῷ καὶ χρυσῷ πύρωσις, ἀνὴρ δὲ δοκιμάζεται διὰ στόματος ἐγκωμιαζόντων αὐτόν. 21α καρδία ἀνόμου ἐκζητεῖ κακά, καρδία δὲ εὐθὴς ἐκζητεῖ γνῶσιν.	Fire is the trial for silver and gold; and a man is tried by the mouth of them that praise him.

ἐὰν μαστιγοῖς ἄφρονα ἐν μέσῳ συνεδρίου ἀτιμάζων, οὐ μὴ περιέλῃς τὴν ἀφροσύνην αὐτοῦ.	Though thou scourge a fool, disgracing him in the midst of the council, thou wilt still in no wise remove his folly from him.

γνωστῶς ἐπιγνώσῃ ψυχὰς ποιμνίου σου καὶ ἐπιστήσεις καρδίαν σου σαῖς ἀγέλαις·	Do thou thoroughly know the number of thy flock, and pay attention to thine herds.

ὅτι οὐκ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα ἀνδρὶ κράτος καὶ ἰσχύς, οὐδὲ παραδίδωσιν ἐκ γενεᾶς εἰς γενεάν.	For a man has not strength and power for ever; neither does he transmit it from generation to generation.

ἐπιμελοῦ τῶν ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ χλωρῶν καὶ κερεῖς πόαν, καὶ σύναγε χόρτον ὀρεινόν,	Take care of the herbage in the field, and thou shalt cut grass, and gather the mountain hay;

ἵνα ἔχῃς πρόβατα εἰς ἱματισμόν· τίμα πεδίον, ἵνα ὦσί σοι ἄρνες.	that thou mayest have wool of sheep for clothing: pay attention to the land, that thou mayest have lambs.

υἱέ, παρ᾿ ἐμοῦ ἔχεις ρήσεις ἰσχυρὰς εἰς τὴν ζωήν σου καὶ εἰς τὴν ζωὴν σῶν θεραπόντων.	My son, thou hast from me words very useful for thy life, and for the life of thy servants.
Κεφάλαιο 28	Chapter 28

ΦΕΥΓΕΙ ἀσεβὴς μηδενὸς διώκοντος, δίκαιος δὲ ὥσπερ λέων πέποιθε.	The ungodly man flees when no one pursues: but the righteous is confident as a lion.

δι᾿ ἁμαρτίας ἀσεβῶν κρίσεις ἐγείρονται, ἀνὴρ δὲ πανοῦργος κατασβέσει αὐτάς.	By reason of the sins of ungodly men quarrels arise; but a wise man will quell them.

ἀνδρεῖος ἐν ἀσεβείαις συκοφαντεῖ πτωχούς. ὥσπερ ὑετὸς λάβρος καὶ ἀνωφελής,	A bold man oppresses the poor by ungodly deeds. As an impetuous and unprofitable rain,

οὕτως οἱ ἐγκαταλείποντες τὸν νόμον ἐγκωμιάζουν ἀσέβειαν, οἱ δὲ ἀγαπῶντες τὸν νόμον περιβάλλουσιν ἑαυτοῖς τεῖχος.	so they that forsake the law praise ungodliness; but they that love the law fortify themselves with a wall.

ἄνδρες κακοὶ οὐ νοήσουσι κρίμα, οἱ δὲ ζητοῦντες τὸν Κύριον συνήσουσιν ἐν παντί.	Evil men will not understand judgment: but they that seek the Lord will understand everything.

κρείσσων πτωχὸς πορευόμενος ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, πλουσίου ψευδοῦς.	A poor man walking in truth is better than a rich liar.

φυλάσσει νόμον υἱὸς συνετός, ὃς δὲ ποιμαίνει ἀσωτίαν ἀτιμάζει πατέρα.	A wise son keeps the law: but he that keeps up debauchery dishonours his father.

ὁ πληθύνων τὸν πλοῦτον αὐτοῦ μετὰ τόκων καὶ πλεονασμῶν, τῷ ἐλεῶντι πτωχοὺς συνάγει αὐτόν.	He that increases his wealth by usuries and unjust gains, gathers it for him that pities the poor.

ὁ ἐκκλίνων τὸ οὖς αὐτοῦ μὴ εἰσακοῦσαι νόμου, καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν προσευχὴν αὐτοῦ ἐβδέλυκται.	He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even he has made his prayer abominable.

ὃς πλανᾷ εὐθεῖς ἐν ὁδῷ κακῇ, εἰς διαφθορὰν αὐτὸς ἐμπεσεῖται· οἱ δὲ ἄνομοι διελεύσονται ἀγαθά, καὶ οὐκ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς αὐτά.	He that causes upright men to err in an evil way, himself shall fall into destruction: transgressors also shall pass by prosperity, but shall not enter into it.

σοφὸς παρ᾿ ἑαυτῷ ἀνὴρ πλούσιος, πένης δὲ νοήμων καταγνώσεται αὐτοῦ.	A rich man is wise in his own conceit; but an intelligent poor man will condemn him.

διὰ βοήθειαν δικαίων πολλὴν γίνεται δόξα, ἐν δὲ τόποις ἀσεβῶν ἁλίσκονται ἄνθρωποι.	By reason of the help of righteous men great glory arises: but in the places of the ungodly men are caught.

ὁ ἐπικαλύπτων ἀσέβειαν ἑαυτοῦ οὐκ εὐοδωθήσεται, ὁ δὲ ἐξηγούμενος ἐλέγχους ἀγαπηθήσεται.	He that covers his own ungodliness shall not prosper: but he that blames himself shall be loved.

μακάριος ἀνήρ, ὃς καταπτήσσει πάντα δι᾿ εὐλάβειαν, ὁ δὲ σκληρὸς τὴν καρδίαν ἐμπεσεῖται κακοῖς.	Blessed is the man who religiously fears always: but the hard of heart shall fall into mischiefs.

λέων πεινῶν καὶ λύκος διψῶν, ὃς τυραννεῖ, πτωχὸς ὤν, ἔθνους πενιχροῦ.	A hungry lion and a thirsty wolf is he, who, being poor, rules over a poor nation.

βασιλεὺς ἐνδεὴς προσόδων μέγας συκοφάντης, ὁ δὲ μισῶν ἀδικίαν μακρὸν χρόνον ζήσεται.	A king in need of revenues is a great oppressor: but he that hates injustice shall live a long time.

ἄνδρα τὸν ἐν αἰτίᾳ φόνου ὁ ἐγγυώμενος, φυγὰς ἔσται καὶ οὐκ ἐν ἀσφαλείᾳ. 17α παίδευε υἱὸν καὶ ἀγαπήσει σε, καὶ δώσει κόσμον τῇ σῆ ψυχῇ· οὐ μὴ ὑπακούσει ἔθνει παρανόμῳ.	He that becomes surety for a man charged with murder shall be an exile, and not in safety.
18	18
ὁ πορευόμενος δικαίως βεβοήθηται, ὁ δὲ σκολιαῖς ὁδοῖς πορευόμενος ἐμπλακήσεται.	He that walks justly is assisted: but he that walks in crooked ways shall be entangled therein.

ὁ ἐργαζόμενος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γῆν πλησθήσεται ἄρτων, ὁ δὲ διώκων σχολὴν πλησθήσεται πενίας.	He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows idleness shall have plenty of poverty.

ἀνὴρ ἀξιόπιστος πολλὰ εὐλογηθήσεται, ὁ δὲ κακὸς οὐκ ἀτιμώρητος ἔσται.	A man worthy of credit shall be much blessed: but the wicked shall not be unpunished.
21	21
ὃς οὐκ αἰσχύνεται πρόσωπα δικαίων, οὐκ ἀγαθός· ὁ τοιοῦτος ψωμοῦ ἄρτου ἀποδώσεται ἄνδρα.	He that reverences not the persons of the just is not good: such a one will sell a man for a morsel of bread.
22	22
σπεύδει πλουτεῖν ἀνὴρ βάσκανος, καὶ οὐκ οἶδεν ὅτι ἐλεήμων κρατήσει αὐτοῦ.	An envious man makes haste to be rich, and knows not that the merciful man will have the mastery over him.
23	23
ὁ ἐλέγχων ἀνθρώπου ὁδοὺς χάριτας ἕξει μᾶλλον τοῦ γλωσσοχαριτοῦντος.	He that reproves a man's ways shall have more favour than he that flatters with the tongue.
24	24
ὃς ἀποβάλλεται πατέρα ἢ μητέρα, καὶ δοκεῖ μὴ ἁμαρτάνειν, οὗτος κοινωνός ἐστιν ἀνδρὸς ἀσεβοῦς.	He that casts off father or mother, and thinks he sins not; the same is partaker with an ungodly man.
25	25
ἄπιστος ἀνὴρ κρίνει εἰκῆ, ὃς δὲ πέποιθεν ἐπὶ Κύριον ἐν ἐπιμελείᾳ ἔσται.	An unbelieving man judges rashly: but he that trusts in the Lord will act carefully.
26	26
ὃς πέποιθε θρασείᾳ καρδίᾳ, ὁ τοιοῦτος ἄφρων· ὃς δὲ πορεύεται σοφίᾳ σωθήσεται.	He that trusts to a bold heart, such an one is a fool: but he that walks in wisdom shall be safe.
27	27
ὃς δίδωσι πτωχοῖς, οὐκ ἐνδεηθήσεται, ὃς δὲ ἀποστρέφει τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν αὐτοῦ, ἐν πολλῇ ἀπορίᾳ ἔσται.	He that gives to the poor shall not be in want: but he that turns away his eye from him shall be in great distress.
28	28
ἐν τόποις ἀσεβῶν στένουσι δίκαιοι, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐκείνων ἀπωλείᾳ πληθυνθήσονται δίκαιοι.	In the places of ungodly men the righteous mourn: but in their destruction the righteous shall be multiplied.
Κεφάλαιο 29	Chapter 29

1	1
ΚΡΕΙΣΣΩΝ ἀνὴρ ἐλέγχων ἀνδρὸς σκληροτραχήλου, ἐξαπίνης γὰρ φλεγομένου αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις.	A reprover is better than a stiff-necked man: for when the latter is suddenly set on fire, there shall be no remedy.
2	2
ἐγκωμιαζομένων δικαίων εὐφρανθήσονται λαοί, ἀρχόντων δὲ ἀσεβῶν στένουσιν ἄνδρες.	When the righteous are praised, the people will rejoice: but when the ungodly rule, men mourn.
3	3
ἀνδρὸς φιλοῦντος σοφίαν εὐφραίνεται πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, ὃς δὲ ποιμαίνει πόρνας, ἀπολεῖ πλοῦτον.	When a man loves wisdom, his father rejoices: but he that keeps harlots will waste wealth.

βασιλεὺς δίκαιος ἀνίστησι χώραν, ἀνὴρ δὲ παράνομος κατασκάπτει.	A righteous king establishes a country: but a transgressor destroys it.
5	5
ὃς παρασκευάζεται ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἑαυτοῦ φίλους δίκτυον, περιβάλλει αὐτὸ τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ ποσίν.	He that prepares a net in the way of his own friend, entangles his own feet in it.
6	6
ἁμαρτάνοντι ἀνδρὶ μεγάλη παγίς, δίκαιος δὲ ἐν χαρᾷ καὶ ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ ἔσται.	A great snare is spread for a sinner: but the righteous shall be in joy and gladness.
7	7
ἐπίσταται δίκαιος κρίνειν πενιχροῖς, ὁ δὲ ἀσεβὴς οὐ νοεῖ γνῶσιν, καὶ πτωχῷ οὐχ ὑπάρχει νοῦς ἐπιγνώμων.	A righteous man knows how to judge for the poor: but the ungodly understands not knowledge; and the poor man has not an understanding mind.

ἄνδρες ἄνομοι ἐξέκαυσαν πόλιν, σοφοὶ δὲ ἐπέστρεψαν ὀργήν.	Lawless men burn down a city: but wise men turn away wrath.
9	9
ἀνὴρ σοφὸς κρινεῖ ἔθνη, ἀνὴρ δὲ φαῦλος ὀργιζόμενος καταγελᾶται καὶ οὐ καταπτήσσει.	A wise man shall judge nations: but a worthless man being angry laughs and fears not.
10	10
). Γυναῖκα ἀνδρείαν τίς εὑρήσει; τιμιωτέρα δέ ἐστι λίθων πολυτελῶν ἡ τοιαύτη.	Bloody men hate a holy person, but the upright will seek his soul.
11	11
θάρσει ἐπ᾿ αὐτῇ ἡ καρδία τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς, ἡ τοιαύτη καλῶν σκύλων οὐκ ἀπορήσει·	A fool utters all his mind: but the wise reserves his in part.
12	12
ἐνεργεῖ γὰρ τῷ ἀνδρὶ ἀγαθὰ πάντα τὸν βίον.	When a king hearkens to unjust language, all his subjects are transgressors.
13	13
μηρυομένη ἔρια καὶ λίνον ἐποίησεν εὔχρηστον ταῖς χερσὶν αὐτῆς.	When the creditor and debtor meet together, the Lord oversees them both.
14	14
ἐγένετο ὡσεὶ ναῦς ἐμπορευομένη μακρόθεν, συνάγει δὲ αὐτῆς τὸν πλοῦτον.*	When a king judges the poor in truth, his throne shall be established for a testimony.
15	15
καὶ ἀνίσταται ἐκ νυκτῶν καὶ ἔδωκε βρώματα τῷ οἴκῳ καὶ ἔργα ταῖς θεραπαίναις.	Stripes and reproofs give wisdom: but an erring child disgraces his parents.
16	16
θεωρήσασα γεώργιον ἐπρίατο, ἀπὸ δὲ καρπῶν χειρῶν αὐτῆς κατεφύτευσε κτῆμα.	When the ungodly abound, sins abound: but when they fall, the righteous are warned.
17	17
ἀναζωσαμένη ἰσχυρῶς τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτῆς ἤρεισε τοὺς βραχίονας αὐτῆς εἰς ἔργον.	Chasten thy son, and he shall give thee rest; and he shall give honour to thy soul.
18	18
ἐγεύσατο ὅτι καλόν ἐστι τὸ ἐργάζεσθαι, καὶ οὐκ ἀποσβέννυται ὁ λύχνος αὐτῆς ὅλην τὴν νύκτα.	There shall be no interpreter to a sinful nation: but he that observes the law is blessed.
19	19
τοὺς πήχεις αὐτῆς ἐκτείνει ἐπὶ τὰ συμφέροντα, τὰς δὲ χεῖρας αὐτῆς ἐρείδει εἰς ἄτρακτον.	A stubborn servant will not be reproved by words: for even if he understand, still he will not obey.
20	20
χεῖρας δὲ αὐτῆς διήνοιξε πένητι, καρπὸν δὲ ἐξέτεινε πτωχῷ.	If thou see a man hasty in his words, know that the fool has hope rather than he.
21	21
οὐ φροντίζει τῶν ἐν οἴκῳ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς, ὅταν που χρονίζῃ· πάντες γὰρ οἱ παρ᾿ αὐτῆς ἐνδεδυμένοι εἰσί.	He that lives wantonly from a child, shall be a servant, and in the end shall grieve over himself.
22	22
δισσὰς χλαίνας ἐποίησε τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς, ἐκ δὲ βύσσου καὶ πορφύρας ἑαυτῇ ἐνδύματα.	A furious man stirs up strife, and a passionate man digs up sin.
23	23
περίβλεπτος δὲ γίνεται ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς ἐν πύλαις, ἡνίκα ἂν καθίση ἐν συνεδρίῳ μετὰ τῶν γερόντων κατοίκων τῆς γῆς.	Pride brings a man low, but the Lord upholds the humble-minded with honour.
24	24
σινδόνας ἐποίησε καὶ ἀπέδοτο τοῖς Φοίνιξι, περιζώματα δὲ τοῖς Χαναναίοις.	He that shares with a thief, hates his own soul: and if any having heard an oath uttered tell not of it,
25	25
ἰσχὺν καὶ εὐπρέπειαν ἐνεδύσατο καὶ εὐφράνθη ἐν ἡμέραις ἐσχάταις.	they fearing and reverencing men unreasonably have been overthrown, but he that trusts in the Lord shall rejoice. Ungodliness causes a man to stumble: but he that trusts in his master shall be safe.
26	26
στόμα αὐτῆς διήνοιξε προσεχόντως καὶ ἐννόμως, καὶ τάξιν ἐστείλατο τῇ γλώσσῃ αὐτῆς.	Many wait on the favour of rulers; but justice comes to a man from the Lord.
27	27
στεγναὶ διατριβαὶ οἴκων αὐτῆς, σῖτα δὲ ὀκνηρὰ οὐκ ἔφαγε.	A righteous man is an abomination to an unrighteous man, and the direct way is an abomination to the sinner.
28
τὸ στόμα δὲ ἀνοίγει σοφῶς καὶ νομοθέσμως, ἡ δὲ ἐλεημοσύνη αὐτῆς ἀνέστησε τὰ τέκνα αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπλούτησαν, καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς ᾔνεσεν αὐτήν.

Πολλαὶ θυγατέρες ἐκτήσαντο πλοῦτον, πολλαὶ ἐποίησαν δύναμιν, σὺ δὲ ὑπέρκεισαι καὶ ὑπερῇρας πάσας.
30
ψευδεῖς ἀρέσκειαι καὶ μάταιον κάλλος γυναικός· γυνὴ γὰρ συνετὴ εὐλογεῖται, φόβον δὲ Κυρίου αὕτη αἰνείτω.
31
δότε αὐτῇ ἀπὸ καρπῶν χειλέων αὐτῆς, καὶ αἰνείσθω ἐν πύλαις ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς.
