Chapter 4
1
1
And again he began to teach by the seaside. And there was gathered unto him a great multitude, so that he entered into the boat, and sat in the sea; and all the multitude was by the sea on the land.
2
2
Καὶ ἐδίδασκεν αὐτοὺς ἐν παραβολαῖς πολλά, καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ἐν τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ, And he taught them many things in parables, and said unto them in his teaching,
3
3
Hearken: Behold, the sower went forth to sow:
4
4
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ σπείρειν, ὃ μὲν ἔπεσεν παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν, καὶ ἦλθεν τὰ πετεινὰ καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτό. and it came to pass, as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside, and the birds came and devoured it.
5
5
Ἄλλο δὲ ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸ πετρῶδες, ὅπου οὐκ εἶχεν γῆν πολλήν· καὶ εὐθέως ἐξανέτειλεν, διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν βάθος γῆς· And other fell on the rocky ground, where it had not much earth; and straightaway it sprang up, because it had no deepness of earth:
6
6
ἡλίου δὲ ἀνατείλαντος ἐκαυματίσθη, καὶ διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν ῥίζαν ἐξηράνθη. but when the sun was risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
7
7
And other fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
8
8
And other fell into the good ground, and yielded fruit, growing up and increasing; and brought forth, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.
9
9
And he said, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
10
10
And when he was alone, they that were about him with the twelve asked of him the parable.
11
11
Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Ὑμῖν δέδοται γνῶναι τὸ μυστήριον τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ· ἐκείνοις δὲ τοῖς ἔξω, ἐν παραβολαῖς τὰ πάντα γίνεται· And he said unto them, Unto you is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables:
12
12
ἵνα βλέποντες βλέπωσιν, καὶ μὴ ἴδωσιν· καὶ ἀκούοντες ἀκούωσιν, καὶ μὴ συνιῶσιν· μήποτε ἐπιστρέψωσιν, καὶ ἀφεθῇ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἁμαρτήματα. that seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest haply they should turn again, and their sins should be forgiven them.
13
13
Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς, Οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην; Καὶ πῶς πάσας τὰς παραβολὰς γνώσεσθε; And he saith unto them, Know ye not this parable? and how shall ye know all the parables?
14
14
The sower soweth the word.
15
15
And these are they by the wayside, where the word is sown; and when they have heard, straightaway cometh Satan, and taketh away the word which hath been sown in their hearts.
16
16
Καὶ οὗτοί εἰσιν ὁμοίως οἱ ἐπὶ τὰ πετρώδη σπειρόμενοι, οἵ, ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν τὸν λόγον, εὐθέως μετὰ χαρᾶς λαμβάνουσιν αὐτόν, And these in like manner are they that are sown upon the rocky places, who, when they have heard the word, straightaway receive it with joy;
17
17
καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν ῥίζαν ἐν ἑαυτοῖς, ἀλλὰ πρόσκαιροί εἰσιν· εἶτα γενομένης θλίψεως ἢ διωγμοῦ διὰ τὸν λόγον, εὐθέως σκανδαλίζονται. and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightaway they stumble.
18
18
Καὶ οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας σπειρόμενοι, οἱ τὸν λόγον ἀκούοντες, And these are they that are sown among the thorns; such as hear the word,
19
19
καὶ αἱ μέριμναι τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου, καὶ ἡ ἀπάτη τοῦ πλούτου, καὶ αἱ περὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ἐπιθυμίαι εἰσπορευόμεναι συμπνίγουσιν τὸν λόγον, καὶ ἄκαρπος γίνεται. and the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
20
20
And these are they that were sown upon the good ground; such as hear the word, and accept it, and bear fruit, thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold.
21
21
Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς, Μήτι ὁ λύχνος ἔρχεται ἵνα ὑπὸ τὸν μόδιον τεθῇ ἢ ὑπὸ τὴν κλίνην; Οὐχ ἵνα ἐπὶ τὴν λυχνίαν ἐπιτεθῇ; And he said unto them, Is the lamp brought to be put under the bushel, or under the bed, and not to be put on the stand?
22
22
For there is not anything hidden, which shall not be manifested; neither was anything made secret, but that it should come to light.
23
23
If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear.
24
24
And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete it shall be measured unto you; and more shall be given unto you that hear.
25
25
For whoso hath, to him shall be given: and he that hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath.
26
26
Καὶ ἔλεγεν, Οὕτως ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ, ὡς ἐὰν ἄνθρωπος βάλῃ τὸν σπόρον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, And he said, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed upon the earth;
27
27
καὶ καθεύδῃ καὶ ἐγείρηται νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν, καὶ ὁ σπόρος βλαστάνῃ καὶ μηκύνηται ὡς οὐκ οἶδεν αὐτός. and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, he knoweth not how.
28
28
For the earth beareth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29
29
But when the fruit is ripe, straightaway he putteth forth the sickle, because the harvest is come.
30
30
Καὶ ἔλεγεν, Τίνι ὁμοιώσωμεν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ; Ἢ ἐν ποίᾳ παραβολῇ παραβάλωμεν αὐτήν; And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
31
31
Ὡς κόκκον σινάπεως, ὅς, ὅταν σπαρῇ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς, μικρότερος πάντων τῶν σπερμάτων ἐστὶν τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς· It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when it is sown upon the earth, is less than all the seeds that are upon the earth,
32
32
καὶ ὅταν σπαρῇ, ἀναβαίνει, καὶ γίνεται πάντων τῶν λαχάνων μείζων, καὶ ποιεῖ κλάδους μεγάλους, ὥστε δύνασθαι ὑπὸ τὴν σκιὰν αὐτοῦ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκηνοῦν. yet when it is sown, groweth up, and becometh greater than all the herbs, and putteth out great branches; so that the birds of the heaven can lodge under the shadow thereof.
33
33
Καὶ τοιαύταις παραβολαῖς πολλαῖς ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον, καθὼς ἐδύναντο ἀκούειν· And with many such parables spake he the word unto them, as they were able to hear it;
34
34
χωρὶς δὲ παραβολῆς οὐκ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς· κατ’ ἰδίαν δὲ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ ἐπέλυεν πάντα. and without a parable spake he not unto them: but privately to his disciples he expounded all things.
35
35
And on that day, when even was come, he saith unto them, Let us go over unto the other side.
36
36
And leaving the multitude, they take him with them, even as he was, in the boat. And other little boats also were with him.
37
37
And there ariseth a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the boat, insomuch that it was now filling.
38
38
Καὶ ἦν αὐτὸς ἐπὶ τῇ πρύμνῃ ἐπὶ τὸ προσκεφάλαιον καθεύδων· καὶ διεγείρουσιν αὐτόν, καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Διδάσκαλε, οὐ μέλει σοι ὅτι ἀπολλύμεθα; And he himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion: and they awake him, and say unto him, Teacher, carest thou not that we perish?
39
39
And he awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40
40
Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Τί δειλοί ἐστε οὕτως; Πῶς οὐκ ἔχετε πίστιν; And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41
41
Καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν, καὶ ἔλεγον πρὸς ἀλλήλους, Τίς ἄρα οὗτός ἐστιν, ὅτι καὶ ὁ ἄνεμος καὶ ἡ θάλασσα ὑπακούουσιν αὐτῷ; And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
