That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and deficiency cannot be numbered.	Криве не може зробитися прямим, і чого нема, того не можна рахувати.

I spoke in my heart, saying, Behold, I am increased, and have acquired wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem: also I applied my heart to know wisdom and knowledge. I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth, and behold thou good: and, behold, this is also vanity.	Сказав я у серці моєму: «дай, випробую я тебе веселощами, і насолодися добром»; але і це — суєта!

I said to laughter, Madness: and to mirth, Why doest thou this?	Про сміх сказав я: «дурість!», а про веселощі: «що вони роблять?»

And I examined whether my heart would excite my flesh as with wine, (though my heart guided me in wisdom,) and I desired to lay hold of mirth, until I should see of what kind is the good to the sons of men, which they should do under the sun all the days of their life. I got servants and maidens, and servants were born to me in the house: also I had abundant possession of flocks and herds, beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem.	придбав собі слуг і служниць, і домочадці були у мене; також великої і дрібної худоби було у мене більше, ніж у всіх, що були раніше за мене у Єрусалимі;

Moreover I collected for myself both silver and gold also, and the peculiar treasures of kings and provinces: I procured me singing men and singing women, and delights of the sons of men, a butler and female cupbearers.	зібрав собі срібла і золота і коштовностей від царів і областей; завів у себе співців і співачок і насолоду синів людських — різні музичні інструменти.

So I became great, and advanced beyond all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom was established to me.	І зробився я великим і багатим більше за всіх, що були раніше за мене у Єрусалимі; і мудрість моя була зі мною.

And whatever mine eyes desired, I withheld not from them, I withheld not my heart from all my mirth: for my heart rejoiced in all my labour; and this was my portion of all my labour.	Чого б очі мої не побажали, я не відмовляв їм, не забороняв серцю моєму ніяких веселощів, тому що серце моє раділо в усіх трудах моїх, і це було моєю часткою від усіх трудів моїх.

And I looked on all my works which my hands had wrought, and on my labour which I laboured to perform: and, behold, all was vanity and waywardness of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun. Then I looked on to see wisdom, and madness, and folly: for who is the man who will follow after counsel, in all things wherein he employs it?	І звернувся я, щоб глянути на мудрість і безумство і глупоту: бо що може зробити людина після царя понад те, що вже зроблено?

And I saw that wisdom excels folly, as much as light excels darkness.	І побачив я, що перевага мудрости над глупотою така сама, як перевага світла над темрявою:

The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walks in darkness: and I perceived, even I, that one event shall happen to them all.	у мудрого очі його — в голові його, а нерозумний ходить у темряві; але дізнався я, що одна доля осягає їх усіх.

And I said in my heart, As the event of the fool is, so shall it be to me, even to me; and to what purpose have I gained wisdom? I said moreover in my heart, This is also vanity, because the fool speaks of his abundance.	І сказав я у серці моєму: «і мене осягне та сама доля, як і нерозумного: для чого ж я зробився дуже мудрим?» І сказав я у серці моєму, що і це — суєта;

For there is no remembrance of the wise man with the fool for ever; forasmuch as now in the coming days all things are forgotten: and how shall the wise man die with the fool?	тому що мудрого не будуть пам’ятати вічно, як і нерозумного; у грядущі дні все буде забуто, і на жаль! мудрий помирає нарівні з нерозумним.

So I hated life; because the work that was wrought under the sun was evil before me: for all is vanity and waywardness of spirit.	І зненавидів я життя, тому що противні стали мені діла, які робляться під сонцем; тому що все — суєта і томління духу!

And I hated the whole of my labour which I took under the sun; because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.	І зненавидів я весь труд мій, яким трудився під сонцем, тому що повинен залишити його людині, яка буде після мене.

And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? and whether he will have power over all my labour in which I laboured, and wherein I grew wise under the sun? this is also vanity.	І хто знає: чи мудра буде вона, чи нерозумна. А вона буде розпоряджатися всіма трудами моїми, якими я трудився і якими показав себе мудрим під сонцем. І це — суєта!

So I went about to dismiss from my heart all my labour wherein I had laboured under the sun.	І звернувся я, щоб навіяти серцю моєму зректися усіх трудів, якими я трудився під сонцем,

For there is such a man that his labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in fortitude; yet this man shall give his portion to one who has not laboured therein. This is also vanity and great evil.	тому що одна людина трудиться мудро, зі знанням і успіхом, і повинна віддати все людині, яка не трудилася в тому, що є ніби частиною її. І це — суєта і зло велике!

For it happens to a man in all his labour, and in the purpose of his heart wherein he labours under the sun.	Бо що буде мати людина від усіх трудів своїх і турботи серця свого, що трудиться вона під сонцем?

For all his days are days of sorrows, and vexation of spirit is his; in the night also his heart rests not. This is also vanity.	Тому що всі дні її — скорботи, і труди її — неспокій; навіть і вночі серце її не знає спокою. І це — суєта!

A man has nothing really good to eat, and to drink, and to shew his soul as good in his trouble. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God.	Не підвладне людині і те благо, щоб їсти і пити й насолоджувати душу свою від труда свого. Я побачив, що і це — від руки Божої;

For who shall eat, or who shall drink, without him?	тому що хто може їсти і хто може насолоджуватися без Нього?

For God has given to the man who is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but he has given to the sinner trouble, to add and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God; for this is also vanity and waywardness of spirit.	Бо людині, яка є доброю перед лицем Його, Він дає мудрість і знання і радість; а грішнику дає турботу збирати і накопичувати, щоб потім віддати тому, хто добрий перед лицем Божим. Chapter 3	Глава 3

To all things there is a time, and a season for every matter under heaven.	Усьому свій час, і час усякій речі під небом:

A time of birth, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what has been planted;	час народжуватися, і час помирати; час насаджувати, і час виривати посаджене;

a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to pull down, and a time to build up;	час убивати, і час лікувати; час руйнувати, і час будувати;

a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to lament, and a time to dance;	час плакати, і час сміятися; час ремствувати, і час танцювати;

a time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to abstain from embracing;	час розкидати каміння, і час збирати каміння; час обіймати, і час ухилятися від обіймів;

a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;	час шукати, і час втрачати; час зберігати, і час кидати;

a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to be silent, and a time to speak;	час роздирати, і час зшивати; час мовчати, і час говорити;

a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.	час любити, і час ненавидіти; час війні, і час миру.

What advantage has he that works in those things wherein he labours?	Яка користь тому, хто працює, від того, над чим він трудиться?

I have seen all the trouble, which God has given to the sons of men to be troubled with.	Бачив я цю турботу, яку дав Бог синам людським, щоб вони вправлялися у тому.

All the things which he has made are beautiful in his time: he has also set the whole world in their heart, that man might not find out the work which God has wrought from the beginning even to the end. I know that there is no good in them, except for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.	Пізнав я, що немає для них нічого кращого, як веселитися і чинити добре в житті своєму.

Also in the case of every man who shall eat and drink, and see good in all his labour, this is a gift of God.	І якщо яка людина їсть і п’є, і бачить добре у всякій праці своїй, то це — дар Божий.

I know that whatsoever things God has done, they shall be for ever: it is impossible to add to it, and it is impossible to take away from it: and God has done it, that men may fear before him.	Пізнав я, що все, що чинить Бог, перебуває повік: до того нічого додавати і від того нічого віднімати, — і Бог робить так, щоб благоговіли перед лицем Його.

That which has been is now; and whatever things are appointed to be have already been; and God will seek out that which is past.	Що було, те і тепер є, і що буде, те вже було, — і Бог воззове минуле.

And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, there was the ungodly one; and the place of righteousness, there was the godly one.	Ще бачив я під сонцем: де мала б бути правда, там кривда; де мало б бути правосуддя, там беззаконня.

And I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the ungodly: for there is a time there for every action and for every work.	І сказав я у серці своєму: «праведного і нечестивого буде судити Бог; тому що час для всякої речі і суд над усякою справою там».

I said in my heart, concerning the speech of the sons of man, God will judge them, and that to shew that they are beasts.	Сказав я у серці своєму про синів людських, щоб випробував їх Бог, і щоб вони бачили, що вони самі по собі тварини;
19	19
Also to them is the event of the sons of man, and the event of the brute; one event befalls them: as is the death of the one, so also the death of the other; and there is one breath to all: and what has the man more than the brute? nothing; for all is vanity.	тому що доля синів людських і доля тварин — доля одна: як ті вмирають, так вмирають і ці, і одне дихання у всіх, і немає в людини переваги над худобою, тому що все — суєта!

All go to one place; all were formed of the dust, and all will return to dust.	Усе йде в одне місце: все було створено з пороху і все повернеться у порох.

And who has seen the spirit of the sons of man, whether it goes upward? and the spirit of the beast, whether it goes downward to the earth?	Хто знає: дух синів людських чи сходить угору, і дух тварин чи сходить униз, у землю?

And I saw that there was no good, but that wherein a man shall rejoice in his works, for it is his portion, for who shall bring him to see any thing of that which shall be after him?	Отже, побачив я, що немає нічого кращого, як насолоджуватися людині справами своїми: тому що це — доля її; бо хто приведе її подивитися на те, що буде після неї?
Chapter 4	Глава 4

1	1
So I returned, and saw all the oppressions that were done under the sun: and behold the tear of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of them that oppressed them was power; but they had no comforter:	І обернувся я і побачив усякі утиски, які чиняться під сонцем: і ось сльози пригноблених, а утішителя у них немає; і в руках гнобителів їхніх — сила, а утішителя у них немає.

and I praised all the dead that had already died more than the living, as many as are alive until now.	І ублажив я мертвих, які давно померли, більше за живих, які живуть досі;

Better also than both these is he who has not yet been, who has not seen all the evil work that is done under the sun.	а блаженніший за них обох той, хто ще не існував, хто не бачив злих діл, які чиняться під сонцем.

And I saw all labour, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbour. This is also vanity and waywardness of spirit.	Бачив я також, що всякий труд і всякий успіх у ділах викликають між людьми взаємну заздрість. І це — суєта і томління духу!

The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh.	Нерозумний сидить, склавши свої руки, і з’їдає плоть свою.

Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of trouble and waywardness of spirit.	Краще жменя зі спокоєм, ніж пригорщі з трудом і томління духу.

So I returned, and saw vanity under the sun.	І обернувся я і побачив ще суєту під сонцем;

There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he has neither son nor brother: yet there is no end to all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with wealth; and for whom do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? this is also vanity, and an evil trouble.	чоловік самотній, і іншого немає; ні сина, ні брата немає у нього; а всім трудам його немає кінця, і око його не насичується багатством. «Для кого ж я працюю і позбавляю душу мою блага?» І це — суєта і недобра справа!

Two are better than one, seeing they have a good reward for their labour.	Двом краще, ніж одному; тому що у них є добра винагорода у праці їх:

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls, and there is not a second to lift him up.	тому що коли впаде один, то іншій підніме товариша свого. Але горе одному, коли впаде, а іншого немає, який підняв би його.

Also if two should lie together, they also get heat: but how shall one be warmed alone?	Також якщо лежать двоє, то тепло їм; а одному як зігрітися?

And if one should prevail against him, the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord shall not be quickly broken.	І якщо стане переборювати хто-небудь одного, то двоє встоять проти нього: і нитка, утроє скручена, не скоро порветься.

Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who knows not how to take heed any longer.	Краще бідний, але розумний юнак, ніж старий, але нерозумний цар, який не вміє приймати поради;

For he shall come forth out of the house of the prisoners to reign, because he also that was in his kingdom has become poor.	бо той з в’язниці вийде на царство, хоча народився у царстві своєму бідним.

I beheld all the living who were walking under the sun, with the second youth who shall stand up in each one's place.	Бачив я всіх, хто живе, які ходять під сонцем, з цим іншим юнаком, який займе місце того.

There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them: and the last shall not rejoice in him: for this also is vanity and waywardness of spirit.	Не було числа всьому народу, що був перед ним, хоч пізніші не радітимуть ним. І це — суєта і томління духу!

Keep thy foot, whensoever thou goest to the house of God; and when thou art near to hear, let thy sacrifice be better than the gift of fools: for they know not that they are doing evil.	Спостерігай за ногою твоєю, коли йдеш у дім Божий, і будь готовий більше до слухання, ніж до жертвоприношення; бо вони не думають, що зле чинять.
Chapter 5	Глава 5

Be not hasty with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be swift to utter anything before God; for God is in heaven above, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.	Не поспішай язиком твоїм, і серце твоє нехай не поспішає вимовити слово перед Богом; тому що Бог на небі, а ти на землі; тому слова твої нехай будуть скупі.

For through the multitude of trial a dream comes; and a fool's voice is with a multitude of words.	Бо, як сновидіння бувають при великій кількості турбот, так голос нерозумного пізнається при великій кількості слів.

Whenever thou shalt vow a vow to God, defer not to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools: pay thou therefore whatsoever thou shalt have vowed.	Коли даєш обітницю Богу, то не барися виконати її, тому що Він не благоволить до нерозумних: що обіцяв, виконай.

It is better that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.	Краще тобі не обіцяти, ніж обіцяти і не виконати.

Suffer not thy mouth to lead thy flesh to sin; and say not in the presence of God, It was an error: lest God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the works of thy hands.	Не дозволяй вустам твоїм вводити у гріх плоть твою, і не говори перед ангелом [Божим]: «це — помилка!» Для чого тобі робити, щоб Бог прогнівався на слово твоє і зруйнував справу рук твоїх?

For there is evil in a multitude of dreams and vanities and many words: but fear thou God.	Бо у безлічі сновидінь, як і в безлічі слів, — багато суєти; але ти бійся Бога.

If thou shouldest see the oppression of the poor, and the wresting of judgment and of justice in the land, wonder not at the matter: for there is a high one to watch over him that is high, and high ones over them.	Якщо ти побачиш у якійсь області пригнічення бідного і порушення суду і правди, то не дивуйся цьому: тому що над високим наглядає вищий, а над ними ще вищий;

Also the abundance of the earth is for every one: the king is dependent on the tilled field.	зверхність же над країною в цілому має цар, який піклується про країну.

He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver: and who has loved gain, in the abundance thereof? this is also vanity.	Хто любить срібло, той не насититься сріблом, і хто любить багатство, тому немає користи від того. І це — суєта!

In the multitude of good they are increased that eat it: and what virtue has the owner, but the right of beholding it with his eyes?	Примножується майно, примножуються і ті, що споживають його; і яке благо для того, хто володіє ним: хіба тільки дивитися своїми очима?

The sleep of a servant is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but to one who is satiated with wealth, there is none that suffers him to sleep.	Солодкий сон у того, хто працює, чи мало, чи багато він з’їсть; але пересичення багатого не дає йому заснути.

There is an infirmity which I have seen under the sun, namely, wealth kept for its owner to his hurt.	Є болісна недуга, яку я бачив під сонцем: багатство, яке зберігається володарем його на шкоду йому.

And that wealth shall perish in an evil trouble: and the man begets a son, and there is nothing in his hand.	І гине багатство це від нещасних випадків: породив він сина, і нічого немає в руках у нього.

As he came forth naked from his mother's womb, he shall return back as he came, and he shall receive nothing for his labour, that it should go with him in his hand.	Як вийшов він нагим з утроби матері своєї, таким і відходить, яким прийшов, і нічого не візьме від праці своєї, що міг би він понести у руці своїй.

And this is also an evil infirmity: for as he came, so also shall he return: and what is his gain, for which he vainly labours?	І це тяжка недуга: яким прийшов він, таким і відходить. Яка ж користь йому, що він трудився на вітер?

Yea, all his days are in darkness, and in mourning, and much sorrow, and infirmity, and wrath.	А він у всі дні свої їв у потемках, у великому роздратуванні, у прикрості і досаді.

Behold, I have seen good, that it is a fine thing for a man to eat and to drink, and to see good in all his labour in which he may labour under the sun, all the number of the days of his life which God has given to him: for it is his portion.	Ось ще, що я знайшов доброго і приємного: їсти і пити і насолоджуватися добром у всіх трудах своїх, якими хто трудиться під сонцем у всі дні життя свого, які дав йому Бог; тому що це його доля.

Yea, and as for every man to whom God has given wealth and possessions, and has given him power to eat thereof, and to receive his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.	І якщо якій людині Бог дав багатство і майно, і дав їй владу користуватися ними і брати свою частку і насолоджуватися від праці своєї, то це дар Божий.

For he shall not much remember the days of his life; for God troubles him in the mirth of his heart.	Недовго будуть у нього в пам’яті дні життя його; тому Бог і винагороджує його радістю серця його.
Chapter 6	Глава 6

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is abundant with man:	Є зло, яке бачив я під сонцем, і воно часто буває між людьми:

a man to whom God shall give wealth, and substance, and honour, and he wants nothing for his soul of all things that he shall desire, yet God shall not give him power to eat of it, for a stranger shall devour it: this is vanity, and an evil infirmity.	Бог дає людині багатство і майно і славу, і немає для душі її нестачі ні в чому, чого не побажала б вона; але не дає їй Бог користуватися цим, а користується тим чужа людина: це — суєта і тяжка недуга!

If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, yea, however abundant the days of his years shall be, yet if his soul shall not be satisfied with good, and also he have no burial; I said, An untimely birth is better than he.	Якби якийсь чоловік породив сто дітей, і прожив багато років, і ще примножилися дні життя його, але душа його не насолоджувалась би добром і не було б йому і погребіння, то я сказав би: викидень щасливіший за нього,

For he came in vanity, and departs in darkness, and his name shall be covered in darkness.	тому що він марно прийшов і відійшов у темряву, і його ім’я покрите мороком.

Moreover he has not seen the sun, nor known rest: there is no more rest to this one than another.	Він навіть не бачив і не знав сонця: йому спокійніше, ніж тому.

A good name is better than good oil; and the day of death than the day of birth.	Добре ім’я краще за дорогу масть, і день смерти — за день народження.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the banquet house: since this is the end of every man; and the living man will apply good warning to his heart.	Краще ходити у дім плачу за мертвим, ніж ходити у дім бенкету; бо такий кінець усякої людини, і живий прикладе це до свого серця.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart will be made better.	Сумування краще за сміх; тому що при печалі лиця серце стає кращим.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	Серце мудрих — у домі плачу, а серце нерозумних — у домі веселощів.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger will rest in the bosom of fools.	Не будь духом твоїм поспішним на гнів, тому що гнів гніздиться у серці нерозумних.

Say not, What has happened, that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire in wisdom concerning this.	Не говори: «чому це минулі дні були кращими за нинішні?», тому що не від мудрости ти запитуєш про це.

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and there is an advantage by it to them that see the sun.	Гарна мудрість зі спадщиною, і особливо для тих, які бачать сонце:

For wisdom in its shadow is as the shadow of silver: and the excellence of the knowledge of wisdom will give life to him that has it.	тому що під сінню її те саме, що під сінню срібла; але перевага знання в тому, що мудрість дає життя тому, хто володіє нею.

Behold the works of God: for who shall be able to straighten him whom God has made crooked?	Дивися на дію Божу: бо хто може випрямити те, що Він зробив кривим?

In the day of prosperity live joyfully, and consider in the day of adversity: consider, I say, God also has caused the one to agree with the other for this reason, that man should find nothing after him.	У дні благополуччя користуйся благом, а у дні нещастя розмірковуй: те й інше створив Бог для того, щоб людина нічого не могла сказати проти Нього.

I have seen all things in the days of my vanity: there is a just man perishing in his justice, and there is an ungodly man remaining in his wickedness.	Усього надивився я у суєтні дні мої: праведник гине в праведності своїй; нечестивий живе довго у нечесті своєму.

Be not very just; neither be very wise: lest thou be confounded.	Не будь занадто суворим, і не виставляй себе занадто мудрим; навіщо тобі губити себе?

Be not very wicked; and be not stubborn: lest thou shouldest die before thy time.	Не віддавайся гріху, і не будь безумним: навіщо тобі помирати не у свій час?

It is well for thee to hold fast by this; also by this defile not thine hand: for to them that fear God all things shall come forth well.	Добре, якщо ти будеш триматися одного і не віднімати руки від іншого; тому що хто боїться Бога, той уникне всього того.

Wisdom will help the wise man more than ten mighty men which are in the city.	Мудрість робить мудрого сильнішим за десятьох володарів, які у місті.

For there is not a righteous man in the earth, who will do good, and not sin.	Немає людини праведної на землі, яка робила б добро і не грішила б;

Also take no heed to all the words which ungodly men shall speak; lest thou hear thy servant cursing thee.	тому не на всяке слово, яке говорять, звертай увагу, щоб не почути тобі раба твого, коли він лихословить на тебе;

All these things have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.	Усе це випробував я мудрістю; я сказав: «буду я мудрим»; але мудрість далека від мене.

A man's wisdom will lighten his countenance; but a man of shameless countenance will be hated.	Хто — як мудрий, і хто розуміє значення речей? Мудрість людини просвітлює лице її, і суворість лиця її змінюється.

Observe the commandment of the king, and that because of the word of the oath of God.	Я говорю: слово царське бережи, і це заради клятви перед Богом.

Be not hasty; thou shalt go forth out of his presence: stand not in an evil matter; for he will do whatsoever he shall please,	Не поспішай відходити від лиця його, і не наполягай у злій справі; тому що він, що захоче, все може зробити.

even as a king having power: and who will say to him, What doest thou?	Де слово царя, там влада; і хто скаже йому: «що ти робиш?»

He that keeps the commandment shall not know an evil thing: and the heart of the wise knows the time of judgment.	Хто додержується заповіді, той не зазнає ніякого зла: серце мудрого знає і час і устав;

For to every thing there is time and judgment; for the knowledge of a man is great to him.	тому що для всякої речі є свій час і устав; а людині велике зло від того,

There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; and there is no power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in the day of battle; neither shall ungodliness save her votary. And then I saw the ungodly carried into the tombs, and that out of the holy place: and they departed, and were praised in the city, because they had done thus: this also is vanity. Because there is no contradiction made on the part of those who do evil quickly, therefore the heart of the children of men is fully determined in them to do evil.	Не швидко звершується суд над злими вчинками; тому і не страшиться серце синів людських чинити зло.

He that has sinned has done evil from that time, and long from beforehand: nevertheless I know, that it is well with them that fear God, that they may fear before him:	Хоч грішник сто разів чинить зло і заклякає у ньому, але я знаю, що благо буде тим, хто боїться Бога, хто благоговіє перед лицем Його;

but it shall not be well with the ungodly, and he shall not prolong his days, which are as a shadow; forasmuch as he fears not before God.	а нечестивому не буде добра, і, подібно до тіні, недовго протримається той, хто не благоговіє перед Богом.

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there are righteous persons to whom it happens according to the doing of the ungodly; and there are ungodly men, to whom it happens according to the doing of the just: I said, This is also vanity.	Є і така суєта на землі: праведників осягає те, чого заслуговували б діла нечестивих, а з нечестивими буває те, чого заслуговували б діла праведників. І сказав я: і це — суєта!

Then I praised mirth, because there is no good for a man under the sun, but to eat, and drink, and be merry: and this shall attend him in his labour all the days of his life, which God has given him under the sun.	І похвалив я веселощі; тому що немає кращого для людини під сонцем, як їсти, пити і веселитися: це супроводжує її у трудах у дні життя її, які дав їй Бог під сонцем.

Whereupon I set my heart to know wisdom, and to perceive the trouble that was wrought upon the earth: for there is that neither by day nor night sees sleep with his eyes.	Коли я звернув серце моє на те, щоб осягнути мудрість і розглянути діла, які чиняться на землі, і серед яких людина ні вдень, ні вночі не знає сну, —

And I beheld all the works of God, that a man shall not be able to discover the work which is wrought under the sun; whatsoever things a man shall endeavour to seek, however a man may labour to seek it, yet he shall not find it; yea, how much soever a wise man may speak of knowing it, he shall not be able to find it: for I applied all this to my heart, and my heart has seen all this.	тоді я побачив усі діла Божі і знайшов, що людина не може осягнути діла, які чиняться під сонцем. Скільки б людина не трудилася у дослідженні, вона усе-таки не осягне цього; і якби якийсь мудрець сказав, що він знає, він не може осягнути цього.
Chapter 9	Глава 9

I saw that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: yea, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, though all are before their face.	На все це я звернув серце моє для дослідження, що праведні й мудрі і діяння їхні — у руці Божій, і що людина ні любови, ні ненависти не знає у всьому тому, що перед нею.

Vanity is in all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good, and to the bad; both to the pure, and to the impure; both to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifices not: as is the good, so is the sinner: as is the swearer, even so is he that fears an oath.	Усьому й усім — одне: одна доля праведнику і нечестивому, доброму і [злому], чистому і нечистому, тому, хто приносить жертву і хто не приносить жертви; як доброчесному, так і грішнику; як тому, хто клянеться, так і тому, хто боїться клятви.

There is this evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yea, the heart of the sons of men is filled with evil, and madness is in their heart during their life, and after that they go to the dead.	Це ж бо і погано в усьому, що чиниться під сонцем, що одна доля всім, і серце синів людських сповнене зла, і безумство в серці їх, у житті їх; а після того вони відходять до померлих.

For who is he that has fellowship with all the living? there is hope of him: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	Хто знаходиться між живими, тому є ще надія, оскільки і псу живому краще, ніж мертвому леву.

For the living will know that they shall die: but the dead know nothing, and there is no longer any reward to them; for their memory is lost.	Живі знають, що помруть, а мертві нічого не знають, і вже нема їм відплати, тому що і пам’ять про них піддана забуттю,

Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, have now perished; yea, there is no portion for them any more for ever in all that is done under the sun.	і любов їх і ненависть їх і ревнощі їх уже зникли, і нема їм більше частки повіки ні в чому, що відбувається під сонцем.

Go, eat thy bread with mirth, and drink thy wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favourably accepted thy works.	Отже, йди, їж з веселощами хліб твій, і пий у радості серця вино твоє, коли Бог благоволить до справ твоїх.

Let thy garments be always white; and let not oil be wanting on thine head.	Нехай буде повсякчас одяг твій світлим, і нехай не зменшується єлей на голові твоїй.

And see life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which are given thee under the sun: for that is thy portion in thy life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun.	Насолоджуйся життям із дружиною, яку любиш, у всі дні суєтного життя твого, і яку дав тобі Бог під сонцем на всі суєтні дні твої; тому що це — доля твоя у житті й у трудах твоїх, якими ти трудишся під сонцем.

Whatsoever thine hand shall find to do, do with all thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Hades whither thou goest.	Усе, що може рука твоя робити, за силами роби; тому що у могилі, куди ти підеш, немає ні праці, ні роздумів, ні знання, ні мудрости.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor yet wealth to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of knowledge; for time and chance will happen to them all.	І обернувся я, і бачив під сонцем, що не прудким дістається успішний біг, не хоробрим — перемога, не мудрим — хліб, і не розумним — багатство, і не майстерним — прихильність, але час і випадок для всіх них.

For surely man also knows not his time: as fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as birds that are caught in a snare; even thus the sons of men are snared at an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them.	Бо людина не знає свого часу. Як риби попадаються у пагубну сіть, і як птахи заплутуються у тенетах, так сини людські уловлюються в час біди, коли вона несподівано находить на них.

This I also saw to be wisdom under the sun, and it is great before me:	Ось ще яку мудрість бачив я під сонцем, і вона здалася мені важливою:

suppose there were a little city, and few men in it; and there should come against it a great king, and surround it, and build great mounds against it;	місто невелике, і людей у ньому небагато; до нього підступив великий цар і обложив його і зробив проти нього великі облогові роботи;

and should find in it a poor wise man, and he should save the city through his wisdom: yet no man would remember that poor man.	але в ньому знайшовся мудрий бідняк, і він урятував своєю мудрістю це місто; й однак же ніхто не згадував про цю бідну людину.

And I said, Wisdom is better than power: yet the wisdom of the poor man is set at nought, and his words not listened to.	І сказав я: мудрість краща за силу, й однак же, мудрість бідняка зневажається, і слів його не слухають.

The words of the wise are heard in quiet more than the cry of them that rule in folly.	Слова мудрих, вимовлені спокійно, вислуховуються краще, ніж крик володаря між нерозумними.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war: and one sinner will destroy much good.	Мудрість краща за військову зброю; але один, що згрішив, погубить багато доброго.
Chapter 10	Глава 10

Pestilent flies will corrupt a preparation of sweet ointment: and a little wisdom is more precious than great glory of folly.	Мертві мухи псують і роблять смердючою запашну масть мироварника: те саме робить невелика глупота шанованої людини з її мудрістю і честю.

A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.	Серце мудрого — на праву сторону, а серце нерозумного — на ліву.

Yea, and whenever a fool walks by the way, his heart will fail him, and all that he thinks of is folly.	Якою б дорогою не йшов нерозумний, у нього завжди бракує глузду, і всякому він висловить, що він нерозумний.

If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for soothing will put an end to great offences.	Якщо гнів начальника запалає на тебе, то не залишай місця твого; тому що покірливість покриває і великі провини.

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, wherein an error has proceeded from the ruler.	Є зло, яке бачив я під сонцем, це — ніби погрішність, яка йде від володаря:

The fool has been set in very high places, while rich men would sit in a low one.	невігластво ставиться на велику висоту, а багаті сидять низько.

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants on the earth.	Бачив я рабів на конях, а князів, які ходять, подібно до рабів, пішки.

He that digs a pit shall fall into it; and him that breaks down a hedge a serpent shall bite.	Хто копає яму, той упаде у неї, і хто руйнує огорожу, того вжалить змій.

He that removes stones shall be troubled thereby; he that cleaves wood shall be endangered thereby.	Хто пересуває камені, той може надсадити себе, і хто коле дрова, той може піддати себе небезпеці від них.

If the axe-head should fall off, then the man troubles his countenance, and he must put forth more strength: and in that case skill is of no advantage to a man.	Якщо затупиться сокира, і якщо лезо її не буде загострене, то потрібно буде напружувати сили; мудрість уміє це виправити.

If a serpent bite when there is no charmer's whisper, then there is no advantage to the charmer.	Якщо змій ужалить без заговорювання, то не кращий за нього і злоязичний.

The words of a wise mouth are gracious: but the lips of a fool will swallow him up.	Слова з уст мудрого — благодать, а вуста нерозумного гублять його ж:

The beginning of the words of his mouth is folly: and the end of his talk mischievous madness.	початок слів з уст його — глупота, а кінець промови з уст його — безумство.

A fool moreover multiplies words: man knows not what has been, nor what will be: who shall tell him what will come after him?	Нерозумний наговорює багато, хоч людина не знає, що буде, і хто скаже йому, що буде після нього?

The labour of fools will afflict them, as that of one who knows not to go to the city.	Труд нерозумного стомлює його, тому що не знає навіть дороги у місто.

Woe to thee, O city, whose king is young, and thy princes eat in the morning!	Горе тобі, земле, коли цар твій отрок, і коли князі твої їдять рано!

Blessed art thou, O land, whose king is a son of nobles, and whose princes shall eat seasonably, for strength, and shall not be ashamed.	Благо тобі, земле, коли цар у тебе зі шляхетного роду, і князі твої їдять вчасно, для підкріплення, а не для пересичення!

By slothful neglect a building will be brought low: and by idleness of the hands the house will fall to pieces.	Від лінощів обвисне стеля, і коли опустяться руки, то протече дім.

Men prepare bread for laughter, and wine and oil that the living should rejoice: but to money all things will humbly yield obedience.	Бенкети влаштовуються для задоволення, і вино веселить життя; а за усе відповідає срібло.

Even in thy conscience, curse not the king; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry thy voice, and that which has wings shall report thy speech.	Навіть і в думках твоїх не лихослов царя, і у спальній кімнаті твоїй не лихослов багатого; тому що птах небесний може перенести слово твоє, і крилатий — переказати промову твою.
Chapter 11	Глава 11

Send forth thy bread upon the face of the water: for thou shalt find it after many days.	Відпускай хліб твій за водою, тому що після багатьох днів знову знайдеш його.

Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil there shall be upon the earth.	Давай частку семи і навіть восьми, тому що не знаєш, яке лихо буде на землі.

If the clouds be filled with rain, they pour it out upon the earth: and if a tree fall southward, or if it fall northward, in the place where the tree shall fall, there it shall be.	Коли хмари будуть повні, то вони проллють на землю дощ; і якщо впаде дерево на південь або на північ, то воно там і залишиться, куди впаде.

He that observes the wind sows not; and he that looks at the clouds will not reap.	Хто спостерігає вітер, тому не сіяти; і хто дивиться на хмари, тому не жати.

Among whom none knows what is the way of the wind: as the bones are hid in the womb of a pregnant woman, so thou shalt not know the works of God, even all things whatsoever he shall do.	Як ти не знаєш шляхів вітру і того, як утворюються кістки в утробі вагітної, так не можеш знати діло Бога, Який творить усе.

In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening let not thine hand be slack: for thou knowest not what sort shall prosper, whether this or that, or whether both shall be good alike.	Ранком сій насіння твоє, і ввечері не давай відпочинку рукам твоїм, тому що ти не знаєш, те або інше буде вдаліше, або те й інше однаково добре буде.

Moreover the light is sweet, and it is good for the eyes to see the sun.	Солодке світло, і приємно для очей бачити сонце.

For even if a man should live many years, and rejoice in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity.	Якщо людина проживе і багато років, то нехай веселиться вона упродовж усіх їх, і нехай пам’ятає про дні темні, яких буде багато: усе, що буде, — суєта!

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thy heart blameless, but not in the sight of thine eyes: yet know that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.	Веселись, юначе, у юності твоїй, і нехай споживає серце твоє радість у дні юности твоєї, і ходи шляхами серця твого і за видіннями очей твоїх; тільки знай, що за все це Бог приведе тебе на суд.

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for youth and folly are vanity.	І віддаляй печаль від серця твого, і відводь зле від тіла твого, тому що дитинство і юність — суєта.
Chapter 12	Глава 12

And remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the days of evil come, and the years overtake thee in which thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.	І пам’ятай Творця твого в дні юности твоєї, доки не прийшли тяжкі дні і не настали роки, про які ти будеш говорити: «немає мені задоволення в них!»

While the sun and light are not darkened, nor the moon and the stars; nor the clouds return after the rain:	доки не померкли сонце і світло і місяць і зірки, і не найшли нові хмари слідом за дощем.

in the day wherein the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the mighty men shall become bent, and the grinding women cease because they have become few, and the women looking out at the windows be dark;	У той день, коли затремтять ті, що охороняють дім, і зігнуться мужі сильні; і перестануть молоти ті, що мелють, тому що їх мало залишилося; і затьмаряться ті, що дивляться у вікно;

and they shall shut the doors in the market-place, because of the weakness of the voice of her that grinds at the mill; and he shall rise up at the voice of the sparrow, and all the daughters of song shall be brought low;	і будуть зачинятися двері на вулицю; коли замовкне звук жорна, і буде вставати людина за криком півня і замовкнуть дочки співу;

and they shall look up, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall blossom, and the locust shall increase, and the caper shall be scattered: because man has gone to his eternal home, and the mourners have gone about the market:	і висоти будуть їм страшні, і на дорозі жахи; і зацвіте мигдаль, і обважніє коник, і розсиплеться каперс. Бо відходить людина у вічний дім свій, і готові оточити його на вулиці плакальниці; —

before the silver cord be let go, or the choice gold be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel run down to the cistern;	доки не порвався срібний ланцюжок, і не розірвалася золота пов’язка, і не розбився глечик біля джерела, і не поламалося колесо над колодязем.

before the dust also return to the earth as it was, and the spirit return to God who gave it.	І повернувся порох у землю, чим він і був; а дух повернувся до Бога, Який дав його.

Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher; all is vanity.	Суєта суєт, сказав Екклезіаст, усе — суєта!

And because the Preacher was wise above others, so it was that he taught man excellent knowledge, and the ear will trace out the parables.	Крім того, що Екклезіаст був мудрий, він учив ще народ знання. Він усе випробовував, досліджував, і склав багато притч.

The Preacher sought diligently to find out acceptable words, and a correct writing, even words of truth.	Намагався Екклезіаст знаходити витончені висловлювання, і слова істини написані ним правильно.

The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails firmly fastened, which have been given from one shepherd by agreement.	Слова мудрих — як голки і як вбиті цвяхи, і укладачі їх — від єдиного пастиря.

And moreover, my son, guard thyself by means of them: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.	А що понад усе це, сину мій, того бережися: складати багато книг — кінця не буде, і багато читати — втомлює тіло.

Hear the end of the matter, the sum: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole man.	Вислухаємо сутність усього: бійся Бога і заповідей Його дотримуйся, тому що у цьому все для людини;

For God will bring every work into judgment, with everything that has been overlooked, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.	бо всяке діло Бог приведе на суд, і все таємне, чи добре воно, чи зле.
