Chapter 9	Глава 9

For in the twelfth month, on the thirteenth day of the month which is Adar, the letters written by the king arrived.	У дванадцятий місяць, тобто в місяць Адар, у тринадцятий день його, в який припав час виконати повеління царя й указ його, у той день, коли вороги юдеїв сподівалися взяти владу над ними, а вийшло навпаки, що самі юдеї взяли владу над ворогами своїми, —

In that day the adversaries of the Jews perished: for no one resisted, through fear of them.	зібралися юдеї в містах своїх по всіх областях царя Артаксеркса, щоб накласти руку на лиходіїв своїх; і ніхто не міг встояти перед лицем їх, тому що страх перед ними напав на всі народи.

For the chiefs of the satraps, and the princes and the royal scribes, honoured the Jews; for the fear of Mardochæus lay upon them.	І всі князі в областях і сатрапи, й областеначальники, і виконавці справ царських підтримували юдеїв, тому що напав на них страх перед Мардохеєм.

For the order of the king was in force, that he should be celebrated in all the kingdom.	Бо великим був Мардохей у домі в царя, і слава про нього ходила по всіх областях, тому що цей чоловік, Мардохей, піднімався вище і вище.

And in the city Susa the Jews slew five hundred men:	У Сузах, місті престольному, умертвили юдеї і погубили п’ятсот чоловік;

both Pharsannes, and Delphon and Phasga,	і Паршандафу і Далфона й Асфафу,

and Pharadatha, and Barea, and Sarbaca,	і Порафу й Адалью й Аридафу,

and Marmasima, and Ruphæus, and Arsæus, and Zabuthæus,	і Пармашфу й Арисая й Аридая і Ваієзафу, —

the ten sons of Aman the son of Amadathes the Bugæan, the enemy of the Jews, and they plundered their property on the same day:	десятьох синів Амана, сина Амадафа, ворога юдеїв, умертвили вони, а на грабунок не простягли руки своєї.

and the number of them that perished in Susa was rendered to the king.	У той же день донесли цареві про кількість умертвлених у Сузах, престольному місті.

And the king said to Esther, The Jews have slain five hundred men in the city Susa; and how, thinkest thou, have they used them in the rest of the country? What then dost thou yet ask, that it may be done for thee?	І сказав цар цариці Есфирі: у Сузах, місті престольному, умертвили юдеї і погубили п’ятсот чоловік і десятьох синів Амана; що ж зробили вони в інших областях царя? Яке бажання твоє? і воно буде задовільнене. І яке ще прохання твоє? воно буде виконане.

And Esther said to the king, Let it be granted to the Jews so to treat them to-morrow as to hang the ten sons of Aman.	І сказала Есфир: якщо царю благоугодно, то нехай було б дозволено юдеям, які у Сузах, робити те саме і завтра, що сьогодні, і десятьох синів Аманових нехай би повісили на дереві.

And he permitted it to be so done; and he gave up to the Jews of the city the bodies of the sons of Aman to hang.	І наказав цар зробити так; і даний на це указ у Сузах, і десятьох синів Аманових повісили.

And the Jews assembled in Susa on the fourteenth day of Adar, and slew three hundred men, but plundered no property.	І зібралися юдеї, що у Сузах, також і в чотирнадцятий день місяця Адара й умертвили у Сузах триста чоловік, а на грабунок не простягли руки своєї.

And the rest of the Jews who were in the kingdom assembled, and helped one another, and obtained rest from their enemies: for they destroyed fifteen thousand of them on the thirteenth day of Adar, but took no spoil.	Й інші юдеї, які знаходилися в царських областях, зібралися, щоб стати на захист життя свого і бути спокійними від ворогів своїх, і умертвили з ворогів своїх сімдесят п’ять тисяч, а на грабунок не простягли руки своєї.

And they rested on the fourteenth of the same month, and kept it as a day of rest with joy and gladness.	Це було у тринадцятий день місяця Адара; а в чотирнадцятий день цього ж місяця вони заспокоїлися і зробили його днем бенкету і веселощів.

And the Jews in the city Susa assembled also on the fourteenth day and rested; and they kept also the fifteenth with joy and gladness.	Юдеї ж, які у Сузах, збиралися в тринадцятий день його й у чотирнадцятий день його, а у п’ятнадцятий день його заспокоїлися і зробили його днем бенкету і веселощів.

On this account then it is that the Jews dispersed in every foreign land keep the fourteenth of Adar as a holy day with joy, sending portions each to his neighbour.	Тому юдеї сільські, які живуть у селищах відкритих, проводять чотирнадцятий день місяця Адара у веселощах і бенкеті, як день святковий, роблячи подарунки одне одному; [ті ж, що живуть у митрополіях, і п’ятнадцятий день Адара проводять у добрих веселощах, посилаючи подарунки ближнім].

And Mardochæus wrote these things in a book, and sent them to the Jews, as many as were in the kingdom of Artaxerxes, both them that were near and them that were afar off,	І описав Мардохей ці події і послав листи до всіх юдеїв, які в областях царя Артаксеркса, до близьких і до далеких,

to establish these as joyful days, and to keep the fourteenth and fifteenth of Adar;	про те, щоб вони встановили щорічно святкування у себе чотирнадцятого дня місяця Адара і п’ятнадцятого дня його,

for on these days the Jews obtained rest from their enemies: and as to the month, which was Adar, in which a change was made for them, from mourning to joy, and from sorrow to a good day, to spend the whole of it in good days of feasting and gladness, sending portions to their friends, and to the poor.	як таких днів, у які юдеї зробилися спокійними від ворогів своїх, і як такого місяця, в який перетворився їх сум на радість, і нарікання — на день святковий, — щоб зробили їх днями бенкету і веселощів, посилаючи подарунки одне одному і милостині бідним.

And the Jews consented to this accordingly as Mardochæus wrote to them,	І прийняли юдеї те, що вже самі почали робити, і про що Мардохей написав до них,

shewing how Aman the son of Amadathes the Macedonian fought against them, how he made a decree and cast lots to destroy them utterly;	як Аман, син Амадафа, вугеянин, ворог усіх юдеїв, думав погубити юдеїв і кидав пур, жереб, про знищення і погублення їх,

also how he went in to the king, telling him to hang Mardochæus: but all the calamities he tried to bring upon the Jews came upon himself, and he was hanged, and his children.	і як Есфир дійшла до царя, і як цар наказав новим листом, щоб злий намір Амана, який він задумав на юдеїв, обернувся на голову його, і щоб повісили його і синів його на дереві.

Therefore these days were called Phruræ, because of the lots; (for in their language they are called Phruræ;) because of the words of this letter, and because of all they suffered on this account, and all that happened to them.	Тому і назвали ці дні Пурим, від імені: пур [*жереб, бо мовою їх жереби називаються пурим]. Тому, згідно з усіма словами цього листа і з тим, що самі бачили і до чого доходило в них,

And Mardochæus established it, and the Jews took upon themselves, and upon their seed, and upon those that were joined to them to observe it, neither would they on any account behave differently: but these days were to be a memorial kept in every generation, and city, and family, and province.	ухвалили юдеї і прийняли на себе і на дітей своїх і на всіх, хто приєднується до них, неодмінно, щоб святкувати ці два дні, за написаним про них і у свій для них час, кожного року;

And these days of the Phruræ, said they, shall be kept for ever, and their memorial shall not fail in any generation.	і щоб дні ці були пам’ятні і святкувалися в усі роди у кожнім племені, у кожній області й у кожному місті; і щоб дні ці Пурим не скасовувалися в юдеїв, і пам’ять про них не зникла у дітей їхніх.

And queen Esther, the daughter of Aminadab, and Mardochæus the Jew, wrote all that they had done, and the confirmation of the letter of Phruræ.	Написала також цариця Есфир, дочка Абихаїла, і Мардохей юдеянин, з усією наполегливістю, щоб виконували цей новий лист про Пурим;

And Mardochæus and Esther the queen appointed a fast for themselves privately, even at that time also having formed their plan against their own health.	щоб вони твердо зберігали ці дні Пурим у свій час, який встановив про них Мардохей юдеянин і цариця Есфир, і як вони самі призначали їх для себе і для дітей своїх у дні посту і волання.

And Esther established it by a command for ever, and it was written for a memorial.	Так повеління Есфирі підтвердило це слово про Пурим, і воно вписане у книгу.
