Aleph. How does the city that was filled with people sit solitary! she is become as a widow: she that was magnified among the nations, and princess among the provinces, has become tributary.	Πῶς ἐκάθισε μόνη ἡ πόλις ἡ πεπληθυμμένη λαῶν; ἐγενήθη ὡς χήρα πεπληθυμμένη ἐν ἔθνεσιν, ἄρχουσα ἐν χώραις ἐγενήθη εἰς φόρον.

Beth. She weeps sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; and there is none of all her lovers to comfort her: all that were her friends have dealt deceitfully with her, they are become her enemies.	Κλαίουσα ἔκλαυσεν ἐν νυκτί, καὶ τὰ δάκρυα αὐτῆς ἐπὶ τῶν σιαγόνων αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρχει ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτὴν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἀγαπώντων αὐτήν· πάντες οἱ φιλοῦντες αὐτὴν ἠθέτησαν ἐν αὐτῇ, ἐγένοντο αὐτῇ εἰς ἐχθρούς.

Gimel. Judea is gone into captivity by reason of her affliction, and by reason of the abundance of her servitude: she dwells among the nations, she has not found rest: all her pursuers have overtaken her between her oppressors.	Μετῳκίσθη ᾿Ιουδαία ἀπὸ ταπεινώσεως αὐτῆς καὶ ἀπὸ πλήθους δουλείας αὐτῆς· ἐκάθισεν ἐν ἔθνεσιν, οὐχ εὗρεν ἀνάπαυσιν· πάντες οἱ καταδιώκοντες αὐτὴν κατέλαβον αὐτὴν ἀναμέσον τῶν θλιβόντων.

Daleth. The ways of Sion mourn, because there are none that come to the feast: all her gates are ruined: her priests groan, her virgins are led captive, and she is in bitterness in herself.	῾Οδοὶ Σιὼν πενθοῦσι παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι ἐρχομένους ἐν ἑορτῇ· πᾶσαι αἱ πύλαι αὐτῆς ἠφανισμέναι, οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτῆς ἀναστενάζουσιν, αἱ παρθένοι αὐτῆς ἀγόμεναι, καὶ αὐτὴ πικραινομένη ἐν ἑαυτῇ.

He. Her oppressors are become the head, and her enemies have prospered; for the Lord has afflicted her because of the multitude of her sins: her young children are gone into captivity before the face of the oppressor.	᾿Εγένοντο οἱ θλίβοντες αὐτὴν εἰς κεφαλήν, καὶ οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῆς εὐθηνοῦσαν, ὅτι Κύριος ἐταπείνωσεν αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν ἀσεβειῶν αὐτῆς· τὰ νήπια αὐτῆς ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ κατὰ πρόσωπον θλίβοντος.

Vau. And all her beauty has been taken away from the daughter of Sion: her princes were as rams finding no pasture, and are gone away in weakness before the face of the pursuer.	Καὶ ἐξῄρθη ἐκ θυγατρὸς Σιὼν πᾶσα ἡ εὐπρέπεια αὐτῆς· ἐγένοντο οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτῆς ὡς κριοὶ οὐχ εὑρίσκοντες νομὴν καὶ ἐπορεύοντο ἐν οὐκ ἰσχύϊ κατὰ πρόσωπον διώκοντος.

Zain. Jerusalem remembered the days of her affliction, and her rejection; she thought on all her desirable things which were from the days of old, when her people fell into the hands of the oppressor, and there was none to help her: when her enemies saw it they laughed at her habitation.	᾿Εμνήσθη ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ ἡμερῶν ταπεινώσεως αὐτῆς καὶ ἀπωσμῶν αὐτῆς· πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς, ὅσα ἦν ἐξ ἡμερῶν ἀρχαίων, ἐν τῷ πεσεῖν τὸν λαὸν αὐτῆς εἰς χεῖρας θλίβοντος καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ βοηθῶν αὐτῇ, ἰδόντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ αὐτῆς ἐγέλασαν ἐπὶ μετοικεσίᾳ αὐτῆς.

Heth. Jerusalem has sinned a great sin; therefore has she come into tribulation, all that used to honour her have afflicted her, for they have seen her shame: yea, she herself groaned, and turned backward.	῾Αμαρτίαν ἥμαρτεν ᾿Ιερουσαλήμ, διὰ τοῦτο εἰς σάλον ἐγένετο· πάντες οἱ δοξάζοντες αὐτὴν ἐταπείνωσαν αὐτήν, εἶδον γὰρ τὴν ἀσχημοσύνην αὐτῆς, καί γε αὐτὴ στενάζουσα καὶ ἀπεστράφη ὀπίσω.

Teth. Her uncleanness is before her feet; she remembered not her last end; she has lowered her boasting tone, there is none to comfort her. Behold, O Lord, my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself.	᾿Ακαθαρσία αὐτῆς πρὸς ποδῶν αὐτῆς, οὐκ ἐμνήσθη ἔσχατα αὐτῆς· καὶ κατεβίβασεν ὑπέρογκα, οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτήν· ἰδέ, Κύριε, τὴν ταπείνωσίν μου, ὅτι ἐμεγαλύνθη ὁ ἐχθρός.

Jod. The oppressor has stretched out his hand on all her desirable things: for she has seen the Gentiles entering into her sanctuary, concerning whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation.	Χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐξεπέτασε θλίβων ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς· εἶδε γὰρ ἔθνη εἰσελθόντα εἰς τὸ ἁγίασμα αὐτῆς, ἃ ἐνετείλω μὴ εἰσελθεῖν αὐτὰ εἰς ἐκκλησίαν σου.

Chaph. All her people groan, seeking bread: they have given their desirable things for meat, to restore their soul: behold, Lord, and look; for she is become dishonoured.	Πᾶς ὁ λαὸς αὐτῆς καταστενάζοντες, ζητοῦντες ἄρτον, ἔδωκαν τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα αὐτῆς ἐν βρώσει τοῦ ἐπιτστρέψαι ψυχήν· ἰδέ, Κύριε, καὶ ἐπίβλεψον, ὅτι ἐγενήθη ἠτιμωμένη.

Lamed. All ye that pass by the way, turn, and see if there is sorrow like to my sorrow, which has happened to me. The Lord who spoke by me has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.	Οἱ πρὸς ὑμᾶς πάντες παραπορευόμενοι ὁδόν, ἐπιστρέψατε καὶ ἴδετε εἰ ἔστιν ἄλγος κατὰ τὸ ἄλγος μου, ὃ ἐγενήθη· φθεγξάμενος ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐταπείνωσέ με Κύριος ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ.

Mem. He has sent fire from his lofty habitation, he has brought it into my bones: he has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back: he has made me desolate and mourning all the day.	᾿Εξ ὕψους αὐτοῦ ἀπέστειλε πῦρ, ἐν τοῖς ὀστέοις μου κατήγαγεν αὐτό· διεπέτασε δίκτυον τοῖς ποσί μου, ἀπέστρεψέ με εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, ἔδωκέ με ἠφανισμένην, ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ὠδυνωμένην.

Nun. He has watched over my sins, they are twined about my hands, they have come up on my neck: my strength has failed; for the Lord has laid pains on my hands, I shall not be able to stand.	᾿Εγρηγορήθη ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσεβήματά μου· ἐν χερσί μου συνεπλάκησαν, ἀνέβησαν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλόν μου· ἠσθένησεν ἡ ἰσχύς μου, ὅτι ἔδωκε Κύριος ἐν χερσί μου ὀδύνας, οὐ δυνήσομαι στῆναι.

Samech. The Lord has cut off all my strong men from the midst of me: he has summoned against me a time for crushing my choice men: the Lord has trodden a wine-press for the virgin daughter of Juda: for these things I weep.	᾿Εξῆρε πάντας τοὺς ἰσχυρούς μου ὁ Κύριος ἐκ μέσου μου, ἐκάλεσεν ἐπ’ ἐμὲ καιρὸν τοῦ συντρίψαι ἐκλεκτούς μου· ληνὸν ἐπάτησε Κύριος παρθένῳ θυγατρὶ ᾿Ιούδα, ἐπὶ τούτοις ἐγὼ κλαίω.

Ain. Mine eye has poured out water, because he that should comfort me, that should restore my soul, has been removed far from me: my sons have been destroyed, because the enemy has prevailed.	῾Ο ὀφθαλμός μου κατήγαγεν ὕδωρ, ὅτι ἐμακρύνθη ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ ὁ παρακαλῶν με, ὁ ἐπιστρέφων ψυχήν μου· ἐγένοντο οἱ υἱοί μου ἠφανισμένοι, ὅτι ἐκραταιώθη ὁ ἐχθρός.

Phe. Sion has spread out her hand, and there is none to comfort her: the Lord has commanded concerning Jacob, his oppressors are round about him: Jerusalem has become among them as a removed woman.	Διεπέτασε Σιὼν χεῖρας αὐτῆς, οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ παρακαλῶν αὐτήν· ἐνετείλατο Κύριος τῷ ᾿Ιακώβ, κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ οἱ θλίβοντες αὐτόν, ἐγενήθη ῾Ιερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἀποκαθημένην ἀναμέσον αὐτῶν.

Tsade. The Lord is righteous; for I have provoked his mouth: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my grief: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity.	Δίκαιός ἐστι Κύριος, ὅτι τὸ στόμα αὐτοῦ παρεπίκραναν· ἀκούσατε δή, πάντες οἱ λαοί, καὶ ἴδετε τὸ ἄλγος μου· παρθένοι μου καὶ νεανίσκοι μου ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ.

Koph. I called my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and my elders failed in the city; for they sought meat that they might restore their souls, and found it not.	᾿Εκάλεσα τοὺς ἐραστάς μου, αὐτοὶ δὲ παρελογίσαντό με· οἱ ἱερεῖς μου καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροί μου ἐν τῇ πόλει ἐξέλιπον, ὅτι ἐζήτησαν βρῶσιν αὐτοῖς, ἵνα ἐπιστρέψωσι ψυχὰς αὐτῶν, καὶ οὐχ εὗρον.

Rhechs. Behold, O Lord; for I am afflicted: my belly is troubled, and my heart is turned within me; for I have been grievously rebellious: abroad the sword has bereaved me, even as death at home.	᾿Ιδέ, Κύριε, ὅτι θλίβομαι· ἡ κοιλία μου ἐταράχθη, καὶ ἡ καρδία μου ἐστράφη ἐν ἐμοί, ὅτι παραπικραίνουσα παρεπικράνθην· ἔξωθεν ἠτέκνωσέ με μάχαιρα ὥσπερ θάνατος ἐν οἴκῳ.

Chsen. Hear, I pray you, for I groan: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of mine afflictions, and rejoice because thou hast done it: thou hast brought on the day, thou hast called the time: they are become like to me.	᾿Ακούσατε δή, ὅτι στενάζω ἐγώ, οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ παρακαλῶν με· πάντες οἱ ἐχθροί μου ἤκουσαν τὰ κακά μου καὶ ἐχάρησαν, ὅτι σὺ ἐποίησας· ἐπήγαγες ἡμέραν, ἐκάλεσας καιρόν, ἐγένοντο ὅμοιοι ἐμοί.

Thau. Let all their wickedness come before thy face; and strip them, as they have made a gleaning for all my sins: for my groans are many, and my heart is grieved.	Εἰσέλθοι πᾶσα ἡ κακία αὐτῶν κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου, καὶ ἐπιφύλλισον αὐτοῖς, ὃν τρόπον ἐποίησαν ἐπιφυλλίδα περὶ πάντων τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων μου, ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ στεναγμοί μου, καὶ καρδία μου λυπεῖται.
Chapter 2	Κεφάλαιο 2

Aleph. How has the Lord darkened in his wrath the daughter of Sion! he has cast down the glory of Israel from heaven to earth, and has not remembered his footstool.	ΠΩΣ ἐγνόφωσεν ἐν ὀργῇ αὐτοῦ Κύριος τὴν θυγατέρα Σιών; κατέρριψεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ εἰς γῆν δόξασμα ᾿Ισραήλ, καὶ οὐκ ἐμνήσθη ὑποποδίου ποδῶν αὐτοῦ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ.

Beth. In the day of his wrath the Lord has overwhelmed her as in the sea, and not spared: he has brought down in his fury all the beautiful things of Jacob; he has brought down to the ground the strong-holds of the daughter of Juda: he has profaned her king and her princes.	Κατεπόντισε Κύριος οὐ φεισάμενος πάντα τὰ ὡραῖα ᾿Ιακώβ, καθεῖλεν ἐν θυμῷ αὐτοῦ τὰ ὀχυρώματα τῆς θυγατρὸς ᾿Ιούδα, ἐκόλλησεν εἰς τὴν γῆν, ἐβεβήλωσε βασιλέα αὐτῆς καὶ ἄρχοντας αὐτῆς.

Gimel. He has broken in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he has turned back his right hand from the face of the enemy, and has kindled a flame in Jacob as fire, and it has devoured all things round about.	Συνέκλασεν ἐν ὀργῇ θυμοῦ αὐτοῦ πᾶν κέρας ᾿Ισραήλ, ἀπέστρεψεν ὀπίσω δεξιὰν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ προσώπου ἐχθροῦ καὶ ἀνῆψεν ἐν ᾿Ιακὼβ ὡς πῦρ φλόγα, καὶ κατέφαγε πάντα τὰ κύκλῳ.

Daleth. He has bent his bow as an opposing enemy: he has strengthened his right hand as an adversary, and has destroyed all the desirable things of my eyes in the tabernacle of the daughter of Sion: he has poured forth his anger as fire.	᾿Ενέτεινε τόξον αὐτοῦ ὡς ἐχθρός, ἐστερέωσε δεξιὰν αὐτοῦ ὡς ὑπεναντίος καὶ ἀπέκτεινε πάντα τὰ ἐπιθυμήματα τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν μου ἐν σκηνῇ θυγατρὸς Σιών, ἐξέχεεν ὡς πῦρ τὸν θυμὸν αὐτοῦ.

He. The Lord is become as an enemy: he has overwhelmed Israel as in the sea, he has overwhelmed her palaces: he has destroyed his strong-holds, and has multiplied the afflicted and humbled ones to the daughter of Juda.	᾿Εγενήθη Κύριος ὡς ἐχθρός, κατεπόντισεν ᾿Ισραήλ, κατεπόντισε πάσας τὰς βάρεις αὐτῆς, διέφθειρε τὰ ὀχυρώματα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπλήθυνε τῇ θυγατρὶ ᾿Ιούδα ταπεινουμένην καὶ τεταπεινωμένην.

Vau. And he has scattered his tabernacle as a vine, he has marred his feast: the Lord has forgotten the feast and the sabbath which he appointed in Sion, and in the fury of his wrath has vexed the king, and priest, and prince.	Καὶ διεπέτασεν ὡς ἄμπελον τὸ σκήνωμα αὐτοῦ, διέφθειρεν ἑορτὴν αὐτοῦ· ἐπελάθετο Κύριος ἃ ἐποίησεν ἐν Σιὼν ἑορτῆς καὶ σαββάτου καὶ παρώξυνεν ἐμβριμήματι ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ βασιλέα καὶ ἱερέα καὶ ἄρχοντα.

Zain. The Lord has rejected his altar, he has cast off his sanctuary, he has broken by the hand of the enemy the wall of her palaces; they have uttered their voice in the house of the Lord as on a feast day.	᾿Απώσατο Κύριος θυσιαστήριον αὐτοῦ, ἀπετίναξεν ἁγίασμα αὐτοῦ, συνέτριψεν ἐν χειρὶ ἐχθροῦ τεῖχος βάρεων αὐτῆς· φωνὴν ἔδωκαν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου ὡς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἑορτῆς.

Heth. And he has turned to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he has stretched out the measuring line, he has not turned back his hand from afflicting her: therefore the bulwark mourned, and the wall was weakened with it.	Καὶ ἐπέστρεψε Κύριος τοῦ διαφθεῖραι τεῖχος θυγατρὸς Σιών· ἐξέτεινε μέτρον, οὐκ ἀπέστρεψε χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ καταπατήματος, καὶ ἐπένθησε τὸ προτείχισμα, καὶ τεῖχος ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἠσθένησεν.

Teth. Her gates are sunk into the ground: he has destroyed and broken to pieces her bars, and her king and her prince among the Gentiles: there is no law, nay, her prophets have seen no vision from the Lord.	᾿Ενεπάγησαν εἰς γῆν πύλαι αὐτῆς, ἀπώλεσε καὶ συνέτριψε μοχλοὺς αὐτῆς· βασιλέα αὐτῆς καὶ ἄρχοντα αὐτῆς ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν· οὐκ ἔστι νόμος, καί γε προφῆται αὐτῆς οὐκ εἶδον ὅρασιν παρὰ Κυρίου.

Jod. The elders of the daughter of Sion have sat upon the ground, they have kept silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloths: they have brought down to the ground the chief virgins in Jerusalem.	᾿Εκάθισαν εἰς τὴν γῆν, ἐσιώπησαν πρεσβύτεροι θυγατρὸς Σιών, ἀνεβίβασαν χοῦν ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν, περιεζώσαντο σάκκους, κατήγαγον εἰς γῆν ἀρχηγοὺς παρθένους ἐν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ.

Chaph. Mine eyes have failed with tears, my heart is troubled, my glory is cast down to the ground, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; while the infant and suckling swoon in the streets of the city.	᾿Εξέλιπον ἐν δάκρυσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου, ἐταράχθη ἡ καρδία μου, ἐξεχύθη εἰς τὴν γῆν ἡ δόξα μου ἐπὶ τὸ σύντριμμα τῆς θυγατρὸς τοῦ λαοῦ μου ἐν τῷ ἐκλείπειν νήπιον καὶ θηλάζοντα ἐν πλατείαις πόλεως.

Lamed. They said to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? while they fainted like wounded men in the streets of the city, while their souls were poured out into their mother's bosom.	Ταῖς μητράσιν αὐτῶν εἶπαν· ποῦ σῖτος καὶ οἶνος; ἐν τῷ ἐκλύεσθαι αὐτοὺς ὡς τραυματίας ἐν πλατείαις πόλεως, ἐν τῷ ἐκχεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ὡς τραυματίας ἐν πλατείαις πόλεως, ἐν τῷ ἐκχεῖσθαι ψυχὰς αὐτῶν εἰς κόλπον μητέρων αὐτῶν.

Mem. What shall I testify to thee, or what shall I compare to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? who shall save and comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Sion? for the cup of thy destruction is enlarged: who shall heal thee?	Τί μαρτυρήσω σοι ἢ τί ὁμοιώσω σοι, θύγατερ ῾Ιερουσαλήμ; τίς σώσει σε καὶ παρακαλέσει σε, παρθένος θύγατερ Σιών; ὅτι ἐμεγαλύνθη ποτήριον συντριβῆς σου· τίς ἰάσεταί σε;

Nun. Thy prophets have seen for thee vanities and folly: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn back thy captivity; but they have seen for thee vain burdens, and worthless visions.	Προφῆταί σου εἴδοσάν σοι μάταια καὶ ἀφροσύνην καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκάλυψαν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀδικίαν σου τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι αἰχμαλωσίαν σου, καὶ εἴδοσάν σοι λήμματα μάταια καὶ ἐξώσματα.
15	15
Samech. All that go by the way have clapped their hands at thee; they have hissed and shaken their head at the daughter of Jerusalem. Is this the city, they say, the crown of joy of all the earth?	᾿Εκρότησαν ἐπὶ σὲ χεῖρας πάντες οἱ παραπορευόμενοι ὁδόν, ἐσύρισαν καὶ ἐκίνησαν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τὴν θυγατέρα ῾Ιερουσαλήμ· αὕτη ἡ πόλις, ἐροῦσι, στέφανος εὐφροσύνης πάσης τῆς γῆς.

Ain. All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they have hissed and gnashed their teeth, and said, We have swallowed her up: moreover this is the day which we looked for; we have found it, we have seen it.	Διήνοιξαν ἐπὶ σὲ στόμα αὐτῶν πάντες οἱ ἐχθροί σου, ἐσύρισαν καὶ ἔβρυξαν ὁδόντας, καὶ εἶπαν· κατεπίομεν αὐτήν, πλὴν αὕτη ἡ ἡμέρα, ἣν προσεδοκῶμεν, εὕρομεν αὐτήν, εἴδομεν.

Phe. The Lord has done that which he purposed; he has accomplished his word, even the things which he commanded from the ancient days: he has thrown down, and has not spared: and he has caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, he has exalted the horn of him that afflicted thee.	᾿Εποίησε Κύριος ἃ ἐνεθυμήθη, συνετέλεσε ρήματα αὐτοῦ, ἃ ἐνετείλατο ἐξ ἡμερῶν ἀρχαίων, καθεῖλε καί οὐκ ἐφείσατο, καὶ ηὔφρανεν ἐπὶ σὲ ἐχθρόν, ὕψωσε κέρας θλίβοντός σε.

Tsade. Their heart cried to the Lord, Ye walls of Sion, pour down tears like torrents day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eyes cease.	᾿Εβόησε καρδία αὐτῶν πρὸς Κύριον· τείχη Σιών, καταγάγετε ὡς χειμάρρους δάκρυα ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός· μὴ δῷς ἔκνηψιν σεαυτῇ, μὴ σιωπήσαιτο, θύγατερ, ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου.

Koph. Heth. It is the mercies of the Lord, that he has not failed me, because his compassions are not exhausted. Pity us, O Lord, early every month: for we are not brought to an end, because his compassions are not exhausted.

Beth. The precious sons of Zion, who were equalled in value with gold, how are they counted as earthen vessels, the works of the hands of the potter!	Υἱοὶ Σιὼν οἱ τίμιοι, οἱ ἐπῃρμένοι ἐν χρυσίῳ, πῶς ἐλογίσθησαν εἰς ἀγγεῖα ὀστράκινα, ἔργα χειρῶν κεραμέως;

Gimel. Nay, serpents have drawn out the breasts, they give suck to their young, the daughters of my people are incurably cruel, as an ostrich in a desert.	Καί γε δράκοντες ἐξέδυσαν μαστούς, ἐθήλασαν σκύμνοι αὐτῶν· θυγατέρες λαοῦ μου εἰς ἀνίατον ὡς στρουθίον ἐν ἐρήμῳ.

Daleth. The tongue of the sucking child cleaves to the roof of its mouth for thirst: the little children ask for bread, and there is none to break it to them.	᾿Εκολλήθη ἡ γλῶσσα θηλάζοντες πρὸς τὸν φάρυγγα αὐτοῦ ἐν δίψει· νήπια ᾔτηησαν ἄρτον, ὁ διακλῶν οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς.

He. They that feed on dainties are desolate in the streets: they that used to be nursed in scarlet have clothed themselves with dung.	Οἱ ἔσθοντες τὰς τρυφὰς ἠφανίσθησαν ἐν ταῖς ἐξόδοις, οἱ τιθηνούμενοι ἐπὶ κόκκων περιεβάλλοντο κοπρίας.

Vau. And the iniquity of the daughter of my people has been increased beyond the iniquities of Sodoma, the city that was overthrown very suddenly, and none laboured against her with their hands.	Καὶ ἐμεγαλύνθη ἀνομία θυγατρὸς λαοῦ μου ὑπὲρ ἀνομίας Σοδόμων τῆς κατεστραμμένης ὥσπερ σπουδῇ, καὶ οὐκ ἐπόνεσαν ἐν αὐτῇ χεῖρας.

Zain. Her Nazarites were made purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were purified as with fire, their polishing was superior to sapphire stone.	᾿Εκαθαριώθησαν Ναζιραῖοι αὐτῆς ὑπὲρ χιόνα, ἔλαμψαν ὑπὲρ γάλα, ἐπυρώθησαν ὑπὲρ λίθους σαπφείρου τὸ ἀπόσπασμα αὐτῶν.

Their countenance is become blacker than smoke; they are not known in the streets: their skin has cleaved to their bones; they are withered, they are become as a stick.	᾿Εσκότασεν ὑπὲρ ἀσβόλην τὸ εἶδος αὐτῶν, οὐκ ἐπεγνώσθησαν ἐν ταῖς ἐξόδοις· ἐπάγη δέρμα αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τὰ ὀστέα αὐτῶν, ἐξηράνθησαν, ἐγενήθησαν ὥσπερ ξύλον.

Teth. The slain with the sword were better than they that were slain with hunger: they have departed, pierced through from want of the fruits of the field.	Καλοὶ ἦσαν οἱ τραυματίαι ρομφαίας ἢ οἱ τραυματίαι λιμοῦ· ἐπορεύθησαν ἐκκεκεντημένοι ἀπὸ γεννημάτων ἀγρῶν.

Chaph. The Lord has accomplished his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger, and has kindled a fire in Sion, and it has devoured her foundations.	Συνετέλεσε Κύριος θυμὸν αὐτοῦ, ἐξέχεε θυμὸν ὀργῆς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνῆψε πῦρ ἐν Σιών, καὶ κατέφαγε τὰ θεμέλια αὐτῆς.

Lamed. The kings of the earth, even all that dwell in the world, believed not that an enemy and oppressor would enter through the gates of Jerusalem.	Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν βασιλεῖς γῆς, πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν οἰκουμένην, ὅτι εἰσελεύσεται ἐχθρὸς καὶ ἐκθλίβων διὰ τῶν πυλῶν ῾Ιερουσαλήμ.

Ain. The presence of the Lord was their portion; but he will not again look upon them: they regarded not the person of the priests, they pitied not the prophets.	Πρόσωπον Κυρίου μερὶς αὐτῶν, οὐ προσθήσει ἐπιβλέπψαι αὐτοῖς· πρόσωπον ἱερέων οὐκ ἔλαβον, πρεσβύτας οὐκ ἠλέησαν.

Phe. While we yet lived our eyes failed, while we looked in vain for our help. Tsade. We looked to a nation that could not save.	῎Ετι ὄντων ἡμῶν ἐξέλιπον οἱ ὀοφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν εἰς τὴν βοήθειαν ἡμῶν μάταια· ἀποσκοπευόντων ἡμῶν ἀπεσκοπεύσαμεν εἰς ἔθνος οὐ σῷζον.

Χαῖρε καὶ εὐφραίνου, θύγατερ ᾿Ιδουμαίας ἡ κατοικοῦσα ἐπὶ γῆς· καί γε ἐπὶ σὲ διελε‘ύσεται τὸ ποτήριον Κυρίου καὶ μεθυσθήσῃ καὶ ἀποχεεῖς.

Thau. O daughter of Sion, thine iniquity has come to an end; he shall no more carry thee captive: he has visited thine iniquities, O daughter of Edom; he has discovered thy sins.	᾿Εξέλιπεν ἡ ἀνομία σου, θύγατερ Σιών, οὐ προσθήσει τοῦ ἀποικίσαι σε. ἐπεσκέψατο ἀνομίας σου, θύγατερ ᾿Εδώμ· ἀπεκάλυψεν ἐπὶ τὰ ἀσεβήματά σου.
Chapter 5	Κεφάλαιο 5

Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us: behold, and look on our reproach.	ΜΝΗΣΘΗΤΙ, Κύριε, ὅ,τι ἐγενήθη ἡμῖν· ἐπίβλεψον καὶ ἰδὲ τὸν ὀνειδισμὸν ἡμῶν.

Our inheritance has been turned away to aliens, our houses to strangers:	κληρονομία ἡμῶν μετεστράφη ἀλλοτρίοις, οἱ οἶκοι ἡμῶν ξένοις.
3	3
we are become orphans, we have no father, our mothers are as widows.	ὀρφανοὶ ἐγενήθημεν, οὐχ ὑπάρχει πατήρ· μητέρες ἡμῶν ὡς αἱ χῆραι.
4	4
We have drunk our water for money; our wood is sold to us for a burden on our neck:	ὕδωρ ἡμῶν ἐν ἀργυρίῳ ἐπίομεν, ξύλα ἡμῶν ἐν ἀλλάγματι ἦλθεν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον ἡμῶν.

we have been persecuted, we have laboured, we have had no rest.	ἐδιώχθημεν, ἐκοπιάσαμεν, οὐκ ἀνεπαύθημεν.
6	6
Egypt gave the hand to us, Assur to their own satisfaction.	Αἴγυπτος ἔδωκε χεῖρα, ᾿Ασσοὺρ εἰς πλησμονὴν αὐτῶν.
7	7
Our fathers sinned, and are not: we have borne their iniquities.	οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἥμαρτον, οὐχ ὑπάραχουσιν· ἡμεῖς τὰ ἀνομήματα αὐτῶν ὑπέσχομεν.
8	8
Servants have ruled over us: there is none to ransom us out of their hand.	δοῦλοι ἐκυρίευσαν ἡμῶν, λυτρούμενος οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτῶν.
9	9
We shall bring in our bread with danger of our lives, because of the sword of the wilderness.	ἐν ταῖας ψυχαῖς ἡμῶν, εἰσοίσομεν ἄρτον ἡμῶν, ἀπὸ προσώπου ρομφαίας τῆς ἐρήμου.
10	10
Our skin is blackened like an oven; they are convulsed, because of the storms of famine.	τὸ δέρμα ἡμῶν ὡς κλίβανος ἐπελιώθη, συνεσπάσθησαν ἀπὸ προσώπου καταιγίδων λιμοῦ.
11	11
They humbled the women in Sion, the virgins in the cities of Juda.	γυναῖκας ἐν Σιὼν ἐταπείνωσαν, παρθένους ἐν πόλεσιν ᾿Ιούδα.
12	12
Princes were hanged up by their hands: the elders were not honoured.	ἄρχοντες ἐν χερσὶν αὐτῶν, ἐκρεμάσθησαν, πρεσβύτεροι οὐκ ἐδοξάσθησαν.
13	13
The chosen men lifted up the voice in weeping, and the youths fainted under the wood.	ἐκλεκτοὶ κλαυθμὸν ἀνέλαβον, καὶ νεανίσκοι ἐν ξύλῳ ἠσθένησαν.
14	14
And the elders ceased from the gate, the chosen men ceased from their music.	καὶ πρεσβύται ἀπὸ πύλης κατέπαυσαν, ἐκλεκτοὶ ἐκ ψαλμῶν αὐτῶν κατέπαυσαν.
15	15
The joy of our heart has ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.	κατέλυσε χαρὰ καρδίας ἡμῶν, ἐστράφη εἰς πένθος ὁ χορὸς ἡμῶν,
16	16
The crown has fallen from our head: yea, woe to us! for we have sinned.	ἔπεσεν ὁ στέφανος ἡμῶν τῆς κεφαλῆς· οὐαὶ δὴ ἡμῖν, ὅτι ἡμάρτομεν.
17	17
For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: for this our eyes are darkened.	περὶ τούτου ἐγενήθη ὀδυνηρὰ ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν, περὶ τούτου ἐσκότασαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν.
18	18
Over the mountain of Sion, because it is made desolate, foxes have walked therein.	ἐπ’ ὄρος Σιών, ὅτι ἠφανίσθη, ἀλώπεκες διῆλθον ἐν αὐτῇ.
19	19
But thou, O Lord, shalt dwell for ever; thy throne shall endure to generation and generation.	σὺ δέ, Κύριε, εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα κατοικήσεις, ὁ θρόνος σου εἰς γενεὰν καὶ γενεάν.
20	20
Wherefore wilt thou utterly forget us, and abandon us a long time?	ἱνατί εἰς νῖκος ἐπιλήσῃ ἡμῶν, καταλείψεις ἡμᾶς εἰς μακρότητα ἡμερῶν;
21	21
Turn us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be turned; and renew our days as before.	ἐπίστρεψον ἡμᾶς, Κύριε, πρός σε, καὶ ἐπιστραφησόμεθα· καὶ ἀνακαίνισον ἡμέρας ἡμῶν καθὼς ἔμπροσθεν.
22	22
For thou hast indeed rejected us; thou hast been very wroth against us.	ὅτι ἀπωθούμενος ἀπώσω ἡμᾶς, ὠργίσθης ἐφ’ ἡμᾶς ἕως σφόδρα.
