A copy of an epistle, which Jeremy sent unto them which were to be led captives into Babylon by the king of the Babylonians, to certify them, as it was commanded him of God.	Список послання, яке послав Єремія до полонених, яких відводив у Вавилон цар Вавилонський, щоб звістити їм, що повелено було йому Богом.

Because of the sins which ye have committed before God, ye shall be led away captives into Babylon by Nabuchodonosor king of the Babylonians.	За гріхи, якими ви згрішили перед Богом, будете відведені полоненими у Вавилон Навуходоносором, царем Вавилонським.

So when ye be come unto Babylon, ye shall remain there many years, and for a long season, namely, seven generations: and after that I will bring you away peaceably from thence.	Увійшовши у Вавилон, ви пробудете там багато років і тривалий час, навіть до семи родів; після ж цього Я виведу вас звідти з миром.

Now shall ye see in Babylon gods of silver, and of gold, and of wood, borne upon shoulders, which cause the nations to fear.	Тепер ви побачите у Вавилоні богів срібних і золотих і дерев’яних, які носяться на плечах, які вселяють страх язичникам.

Beware therefore that ye in no wise be like to strangers, neither be ye afraid of them, when ye see the multitude before them and behind them, worshipping them.	Стережіться ж, щоб і вам не зробитися подібними до іноплемінників, і щоб страх перед ними не оволодів і вами. Бачачи натовп попереду і позаду них, який поклоняється їм, скажіть у думці: «Тобі повинно поклонятися, Владико!»

But say ye in your hearts, O Lord, we must worship thee.	Бо ангел Мій з вами, і він захисник душ ваших.

For mine angel is with you, and I myself caring for your souls.	Язик їхній виструганий художником, і самі вони оправлені у золото і срібло; але вони облудні, і не можуть говорити.
8	8
As for their tongue, it is polished by the workman, and they themselves are gilded and laid over with gold; yet are they but false, and cannot speak.	І ніби для дівчини, яка любить прикраси, беруть вони золото, і готують вінці на голови богів своїх.
9	9
And taking gold, as it were for a virgin that loveth to go gay, they make crowns for the heads of their gods.	Буває також, що жерці викрадають у богів своїх золото і срібло і вживають його для себе самих;

Sometimes also the priests convey from their gods gold and silver, and bestow it upon themselves.	виділяють з того і блудницям під їх покровом; прикрашають богів золотими і срібними і дерев’яними одежами, як людей.

Yea, they will give thereof to the common harlots, and deck them as men with garments, being gods of silver, and gods of gold, and wood.	Але вони не спасаються від іржі й молі, хоч убрані у пурпуровий одяг.
12	12
Yet cannot these gods save themselves from rust and moths, though they be covered with purple raiment.	Обтирають лице їх від пилу в капищі, якого на них дуже багато.
13	13
They wipe their faces because of the dust of the temple, when there is much upon them.	Має і скіпетр, як людина — суддя країни, але він не може умертвити винного перед ним.
14	14
And he that cannot put to death one that offendeth him holdeth a sceptre, as though he were a judge of the country.	Має меч у правій руці і сокиру, а себе самого від війська і розбійників не може захистити: звідси пізнається, що вони не боги; отже, не бійтеся їх.
15	15
He hath also in his right hand a dagger and an axe: but cannot deliver himself from war and thieves.	Бо, як розбитий сосуд стає некорисним для людини, так і боги їхні.
16	16
Whereby they are known not to be gods: therefore fear them not.	Після того, як вони поставлені у капищах, очі їхні повні пороху від ніг тих, що входять.

For like as a vessel that a man useth is nothing worth when it is broken; even so it is with their gods: when they be set up in the temple, their eyes be full of dust through the feet of them that come in.	І як у того, хто наніс образу царю, зачиняються входи у житло, коли він відводиться на смерть, так капища їх охороняють жерці їх дверима і замками і засувами, щоб вони не були пограбовані розбійниками;

And as the doors are made sure on every side upon him that offendeth the king, as being committed to suffer death; even so the priests make fast their temples with doors, with locks, and bars, lest their gods be spoiled with robbers.	запалюють для них світильники, і більше, ніж для себе самих, а вони жодного з них не можуть бачити.

They light them candles, yea, more than for themselves, whereof they cannot see one.	Вони, як колода у домі; серця їх, говорять, точать черв’яки земляні, і з’їдають їх самих і одяг їх, — а вони не відчувають.

They are as one of the beams of the temple, yet they say their hearts are gnawed upon by things creeping out of the earth; and when they eat them and their clothes, they feel it not.	Лиця їх чорні від куріння у капищах.
21	21
Their faces are blacked through the smoke that cometh out of the temple.	На тіло їх і на голови їх налітають кажани і ластівки й інші птахи, лазять також по них і кішки.
22	22
Upon their bodies and heads sit bats, swallows, and birds, and the cats also.	З цього зрозумієте, що це не боги; отже, не бійтеся їх.
23	23
By this ye may know that they are no gods: therefore fear them not.	Якщо хтось не очистить від іржі золото, яким вони обкладені для краси, то вони не будуть блищати; і коли відливали їх, вони не відчували.
24	24
Notwithstanding the gold that is about them to make them beautiful, except they wipe off the rust, they will not shine: for neither when they were molten did they feel it.	За велику ціну вони куплені, а духу немає у них.
25	25
The things wherein there is no breath are bought for a most high price.	Безногі, вони носяться на плечах, показуючи через те свою нікчемність людям; посоромлюються ж і ті, що служать їм;
26	26
They are borne upon shoulders, having no feet, whereby they declare unto men that they be nothing worth.	тому що, у випадку падіння їх на землю, самі собою вони не можуть встати; також, якби хто поставив їх прямо, не можуть самі собою рухатися і, якби хто нахилив їх, не можуть випрямитися; але як перед мертвими кладуть перед ними дари.

They also that serve them are ashamed: for if they fall to the ground at any time, they cannot rise up again of themselves: neither, if one set them upright, can they move of themselves: neither, if they be bowed down, can they make themselves straight: but they set gifts before them, as unto dead men.	Жертви їх жерці продають і зловживають ними; також і дружини їхні частину з них солять, і нічого не виділяють ні убогому, ні хворому.

As for the things that are sacrificed unto them, their priests sell and abuse; in like manner their wives lay up part thereof in salt; but unto the poor and impotent they give nothing of it.	До жертв їх доторкаються жінки нечисті й ті, що народжують. Отже, пізнавши з цього, що вони не боги, не бійтеся їх.

Menstruous women and women in childbed eat their sacrifices: by these things ye may know that they are no gods: fear them not.	Як же назвати їх богами? жінки приносять жертви цим срібним і золотим і дерев’яним богам.
30	30
For how can they be called gods? because women set meat before the gods of silver, gold, and wood.	І в капищах їх сидять жерці у розідраному одязі, з поголеними головами і бородами і з непокритими головами:

And the priests sit in their temples, having their clothes rent, and their heads and beards shaven, and nothing upon their heads.	ревуть вони з криком перед своїми богами, як деякі на поминках за померлими.
32	32
They roar and cry before their gods, as men do at the feast when one is dead.	Дещо з одягу їх жерці беруть собі й одягають у нього своїх дружин і дітей.
33	33
The priests also take off their garments, and clothe their wives and children.	Якщо терплять від кого-небудь лихе або добре, не можуть воздати; не можуть поставити царя, ні скинути його.
34	34
Whether it be evil that one doeth unto them, or good, they are not able to recompense it: they can neither set up a king, nor put him down.	Рівно ж ні багатства, ні навіть дрібної мідної монети вони не можуть дати. Якщо хто, давши їм обітницю, не виконав би її, не стягнуть.
35	35
In like manner, they can neither give riches nor money: though a man make a vow unto them, and keep it not, they will not require it.	Від смерти людини не визволять, ні слабшого у сильного не віднімуть;

They can save no man from death, neither deliver the weak from the mighty.	людині сліпій не повернуть зір; людині у нестатках не допоможуть;

They cannot restore a blind man to his sight, nor help any man in his distress.	удові не виявлять співчуття, і сироті не зроблять добра.

They can shew no mercy to the widow, nor do good to the fatherless.	До каміння з гір подібні ці боги дерев’яні й оправлені у золото і срібло, — і ті, що служать їм, осоромляться.

Their gods of wood, and which are overlaid with gold and silver, are like the stones that be hewn out of the mountain: they that worship them shall be confounded.	Як же можна подумати або сказати, що вони боги?
40	40
How should a man then think and say that they are gods, when even the Chaldeans themselves dishonour them?	До того ж самі халдеї поводяться з ними нешанобливо: вони, коли побачать німого, що не може говорити, приносять його до Ваала і вимагають, щоб він говорив, ніби він може відчувати.
41	41
Who if they shall see one dumb that cannot speak, they bring him, and intreat Bel that he may speak, as though he were able to understand.	І не можуть вони, помітивши це, залишити їх, тому що не мають сенсу.
42	42
Yet they cannot understand this themselves, and leave them: for they have no knowledge.	Жінки, обв’язавшись очеретяним поясом, сидять на вулицях, спалюючи куріння з оливкових зерен.
43	43
The women also with cords about them, sitting in the ways, burn bran for perfume: but if any of them, drawn by some that passeth by, lie with him, she reproacheth her fellow, that she was not thought as worthy as herself, nor her cord broken.	І коли яка-небудь з них, захоплена перехожим, переспить з ним, — дорікає своїй подрузі, що та не удостоєна того самого, що вона, і що перев’язь її не розірвана.

Whatsoever is done among them is false: how may it then be thought or said that they are gods?	Усе, що звершується у них, неправдиве. Тому як можна думати або говорити, що вони боги?
45	45
They are made of carpenters and goldsmiths: they can be nothing else than the workmen will have them to be.	Створені вони художниками і плавильниками золота; нічим іншим вони не стають, як тим, чим бажали їх зробити художники.
46	46
And they themselves that made them can never continue long; how should then the things that are made of them be gods?	І ті, які виготовляють їх, не бувають довговічні;

For they left lies and reproaches to them that come after.	як же зроблені ними можуть бути богами? Вони залишили після себе неправду і сором своїм нащадкам.

For when there cometh any war or plague upon them, the priests consult with themselves, where they may be hidden with them.	Коли приходять на них війна і нещастя, жерці радяться між собою, де б їм сховатися з ними.
49	49
How then cannot men perceive that they be no gods, which can neither save themselves from war, nor from plague?	Як же не зрозуміти, що то не боги, які самих себе не рятують ні від воєн, ні від бід?
50	50
For seeing they be but of wood, and overlaid with silver and gold, it shall be known hereafter that they are false:	Оскільки вони дерев’яні й оправлені у золото і срібло, то можна пізнати, що вони неправда; усім народам і царям стане очевидно, що це не боги, а діла рук людських, і в них немає ніякої дії божественної.

and it shall manifestly appear to all nations and kings that they are no gods, but the works of men's hands, and that there is no work of God in them.	Кому ж після цього не зрозуміло, що вони не боги?
52	52
Who then may not know that they are no gods?	Царя країні вони не поставлять, дощу людям не дадуть;

For neither can they set up a king in the land, nor give rain unto men.	суду не розсудять, скривдженого не захистять, будучи безсилими,
54	54
Neither can they judge their own cause, nor redress a wrong, being unable: for they are as crows between heaven and earth.	як воро́ни, які знаходяться між небом і землею. Бо й у тому випадку, коли піддалося б пожежі капище богів дерев’яних або оправлених у золото і срібло, жерці їх утечуть і врятуються, — а вони самі, як колоди всередині, згорять.

Whereupon when fire falleth upon the house of gods of wood, or laid over with gold or silver, their priests will flee away, and escape: but they themselves shall be burned asunder like beams.	Ні царю, ні ворогам вони не можуть протистояти. Як же можна прийняти або подумати, що вони боги?
56	56
Moreover they cannot withstand any king or enemies: how can it then be thought or said that they be gods?	Ні від злодіїв, ні від грабіжників не можуть охоронити самих себе ці боги, дерев’яні й оправлені у срібло і золото:
57	57
Neither are those gods of wood, and laid over with silver or gold, able to escape either from thieves or robbers.	перевершуючи їх силою, вони знімають золото і срібло й одяг, який на них, і йдуть зі здобиччю, а ці собі самим не в силах допомогти.
58	58
Whose gold, and silver, and garments wherewith they are clothed, they that are strong do take, and go away withal: neither are they able to help themselves.	Тому краще цар, який виявляє мужність, або корисний у домі сосуд, який використовує господар, ніж облудні боги; або краще двері в домі, що охороняють у ньому майно, ніж облудні боги, або краще дерев’яний стовп у царському палаці, ніж облудні боги.

Therefore it is better to be a king that sheweth his power, or else a profitable vessel in an house, which the owner shall have use of, than such false gods; or to be a door in an house, to keep such things safe as be therein, than such false gods; or a pillar of wood in a palace, than such false gods.	Сонце і місяць і зірки, будучи світлими і посланими заради потреби, благослухняні.

For sun, moon, and stars, being bright, and sent to do their offices, are obedient.	Також і блискавка кожного разу, коли з’являється, ясно видима; також вітер у всякій країні віє.
61	61
In like manner the lightning when it breaketh forth is easy to be seen: and after the same manner the wind bloweth in every country.	І хмари, коли повелить їм Бог пройти над усією вселенною, виконують повеління.
62	62
And when God commandeth the clouds to go over the whole world, they do as they are bidden.	Також вогонь, що з неба посилається для знищення гір і лісів, робить те, що призначено; а ці не подібні до них ні виглядом, ні силами.
63	63
And the fire sent from above to consume hills and woods doeth as it is commanded: but these are like unto them neither in shew nor power.	Чому ж можна подумати або сказати, що вони боги, коли вони неспроможні ні суду розсудити, ні добро чинити людям?
64	64
Wherefore it is neither to be supposed nor said that they are gods, seeing they are able neither to judge causes, nor to do good unto men.	Отже, знаючи, що вони не боги, не бійтеся їх.
65	65
Knowing therefore that they are no gods, fear them not.	Царів вони ні проклянуть, ні благословлять;
66	66
For they can neither curse nor bless kings:	знамень не покажуть на небі і перед народами; не освітять, як сонце, і не осяють, як місяць.
67	67
neither can they shew signs in the heavens among the heathen, nor shine as the sun, nor give light as the moon.	Звірі кращі за них: вони, тікаючи під покров, можуть допомогти собі.
68	68
The beasts are better than they: for they can get under a covert, and help themselves.	Отже, ні з чого не видно нам, що вони боги; тому не бійтеся їх.
69	69
It is then by no means manifest unto us that they are gods: therefore fear them not.	Як опудало на горо́ді нічого не збереже, так і їхні дерев’яні, оправлені у золото і срібло боги.
70	70
For as a scarecrow in a garden of cucumbers keepeth nothing: so are their gods of wood, and laid over with silver and gold.	Так само їхні дерев’яні, оправлені у золото і срібло боги, подібні до тернового куща у саду, на якому сідають усілякі птахи; також і до трупа, кинутого у темряві.

And likewise their gods of wood, and laid over with silver and gold, are like to a white thorn in an orchard, that every bird sitteth upon; as also to a dead body, that is cast into the dark.	З пурпуру та червлениці, які зотлівають на них, ви можете зрозуміти, що вони не боги; та й самі вони будуть нарешті з’їдені і будуть ганьбою у країні.
72	72
And ye shall know them to be no gods by the bright purple that rotteth upon them: and they themselves afterward shall be eaten, and shall be a reproach in the country.	Отже, краще людина праведна, яка не має ідолів, тому що вона — далеко від ганьби.
73
Better therefore is the just man that hath no idols: for he shall be far from reproach.
