Chapter 4	Глава 4

Then the second, that had spoken of the strength of the king, began to say,	І почав говорити другий, який сказав про силу царя.

O ye men, do not men excel in strength, that bear rule over sea and land, and all things in them?	О, мужі! Чи не сильні люди, які володіють землею і морем і всім, що знаходиться в них?

But yet the king is more mighty: for he is lord of all these things, and hath dominion over them; and whatsoever he commandeth them they do.	Але цар перемагає і панує над ними і повеліває ними, і в усьому, що б не сказав їм, вони підкорюються.

If he bid them make war the one against the other, they do it: if he send them out against the enemies, they go, and break down mountains, walls, and towers.	Якщо скаже, щоб вони ополчалися один проти одного, вони виконують; якщо пошле їх проти ворогів, вони йдуть і руйнують гори і стіни і вежі,

They slay and are slain, and transgress not the king's commandment: if they get the victory, they bring all to the king, as well the spoil, as all things else.	й убивають і бувають вбитими, але не переступають слова царського; якщо ж переможуть, усе приносять царю, що одержать у здобич, і все інше.

Likewise for those that are no soldiers, and have not to do with wars, but use husbandry, when they have reaped again that which they had sown, they bring it to the king, and compel one another to pay tribute unto the king.	І ті, які не ходять на війну і не воюють, але обробляють землю, після посіву, зібравши жниво, також приносять цареві

And yet he is but one man: if he command to kill, they kill; if he command to spare, they spare;	і, примушуючи один одного, приносять цареві данину.

if he command to smite, they smite; if he command to make desolate, they make desolate; if he command to build, they build;	І він один, якщо скаже убити — убивають; якщо скаже відпустити — відпускають; сказав бити — б’ють;

if he command to cut down, they cut down; if he command to plant, they plant.	сказав спустошити — спустошують; сказав будувати — будують; сказав зрубати — зрубують; сказав насадити — насаджують;

So all his people and his armies obey him: furthermore he lieth down, he eateth and drinketh, and taketh his rest:	і весь народ його і військо його підкорюються йому. Крім того, він лежить, їсть і п’є і спить,

and these keep watch round about him, neither may any one depart, and do his own business, neither disobey they him in any thing.	а вони стережуть довкола нього і не може ніхто відійти і робити справи свої, і не може не послухатися його.

O ye men, how should not the king be mightiest, when in such sort he is obeyed? And he held his tongue.	О, мужі! Чи не сильніший за всіх цар, коли так підкорюються йому? — І замовк.

Then the third, who had spoken of women, and of the truth, (this was Zorobabel) began to speak.	Третій же, який сказав про жінок і про істину, — це був Зоровавель, — почав говорити:

O ye men, it is not the great king, nor the multitude of men, neither is it wine, that excelleth: who is it then that ruleth them, or hath the lordship over them? are they not women?	О, мужі! Чи не великий цар, і багато хто з людей, і чи не сильне вино? Але хто панує над ними і володіє ними? чи не жінки?

Women have borne the king and all the people that bear rule by sea and land.	Жінки народили царя і весь народ, який володіє морем і землею;
16	16
Even of them came they: and they nourished them up that planted the vineyards, from whence the wine cometh.	і ними народжені і ними вигодувані ті, які насаджують виноград, з якого робиться вино;
17	17
These also make garments for men; these bring glory unto men; and without women cannot men be.	вони роблять одяг для людей і доставляють прикраси людям, і люди не можуть бути без дружин.
18	18
Yea, and if men have gathered together gold and silver, or any other goodly thing, do they not love a woman which is comely in favour and beauty?	Якщо зберуть золото і срібло і всякі коштовності, а потім побачать одну жінку, гарну лицем і красиву,
19	19
And letting all those things go, do they not gape, and even with open mouth fix their eyes fast on her; and have not all men more desire unto her than unto silver or gold, or any goodly thing whatsoever?	залишивши все, спрямовуються до неї і, розкривши рот, дивляться на неї, і всі приліплюються до неї більше, ніж до золота і срібла і до всякої коштовної речі.

A man leaveth his own father that brought him up, and his own country, and cleaveth unto his wife.	Чоловік залишає свого батька, який виховав, і країну свою і приліпляється до дружини своєї;

He sticketh not to spend his life with his wife, and remembereth neither father, nor mother, nor country.	і з дружиною залишає душу, і не пам’ятає ні батька, ні матері, ні країни своєї.

By this also ye must know that women have dominion over you: do ye not labour and toil, and give and bring all to the woman?	І з цього слід вам пізнати, що жінки панують над вами. Чи не піднімаєте ви трудів і чи не напружуєте зусиль, і чи не віддаєте і чи не приносите всього дружинам?

Yea, a man taketh his sword, and goeth his way to rob and to steal, to sail upon the sea and upon rivers;	Бере чоловік меч свій і вирушає, щоб виходити на дороги і грабувати і красти, і готовий плавати по морю і ріках,

and looketh upon a lion, and goeth in the darkness; and when he hath stolen, spoiled, and robbed, he bringeth it to his love.	лева зустрічає, і в темряві блукає; але як тільки украде, забере й ограбує, відносить те до коханої.
25	25
Wherefore a man loveth his wife better than father or mother.	І більше любить чоловік дружину свою, ніж батька і матір.

Yea, many there be that have run out of their wits for women, and become servants for their sakes.	Багато збожеволіли через жінок і зробилися рабами через них.
27	27
Many also have perished, have erred, and sinned, for women.	Багато загинули і збилися зі шляху і згрішили через жінок.

And now do ye not believe me? is not the king great in his power? do not all regions fear to touch him?	Невже тепер не повірите мені? Чи не великий цар владою своєю? Чи не бояться всі країни доторкнутися до нього?

Yet did I see him and Apame the king's concubine, the daughter of the admirable Bartacus, sitting at the right hand of the king,	Я бачив його й Апамину, дочку славного Вартака, царську наложницю, яка сидить праворуч царя;

and taking the crown from the king's head, and setting it upon her own head; she also struck the king with her left hand.	вона знімала вінець з голови царя і покладала на себе, а лівою рукою вдаряла царя по щоці.

And yet for all this the king gaped and gazed upon her with open mouth: if she laughed upon him, he laughed also: but if she took any displeasure at him, the king was fain to flatter, that she might be reconciled to him again.	І, попри все те, цар дивився на неї, розкривши рот: якщо вона усміхнеться йому, усміхається і він; якщо ж вона розсердиться на нього, він пестить її, щоб помирилася з ним.

O ye men, how can it be but women should be strong, seeing they do thus?	О, мужі! Як же не сильні жінки, коли так чинять вони?

Then the king and the princes looked one upon another: so he began to speak of the truth.	Тоді цар і вельможі глянули один на одного, а він почав говорити про істину.

O ye men, are not women strong? great is the earth, high is the heaven, swift is the sun in his course, for he compasseth the heavens round about, and fetcheth his course again to his own place in one day.	О, мужі! Чи не сильні жінки? Велика земля і високе небо, і швидке у своєму плині сонце, тому що воно в один день обходить коло неба і знову повертається на своє місце.

Is he not great that maketh these things? therefore great is the truth, and stronger than all things.	Чи не великий Той, Хто звершує це? І істина велика і сильніша за все.

All the earth calleth upon the truth, and the heaven blesseth it: all works shake and tremble at it, and with it is no unrighteous thing.	Вся земля взиває до істини, і небо благословляє її, і всі діла трясуться і тремтять перед нею. І немає в ній неправди.

Wine is wicked, the king is wicked, women are wicked, all the children of men are wicked; and such are all their wicked works, and there is no truth in them; in their unrighteousness also they shall perish.	Неправедне вино, неправедний цар, неправедні жінки, несправедливі всі сини людські і всі діла їхні такі, і немає в них істини, і вони загинуть у неправді своїй;

As for the truth, it endureth, and is always strong; it liveth and conquereth for evermore.	а істина перебуває і залишається сильною у віках, і живе і володарює повік віку.

With her there is no accepting of persons or rewards: but she doeth the things that are just, and refraineth from all unjust and wicked things; and all men do well like of her works.	І немає в ній упереджености і розрізнення, але робить вона справедливе, віддаляючись від усього несправедливого і злого, і всі схвалюють діла її.
40	40
Neither in her judgment is any unrighteousness; and she is the strength, kingdom, power, and majesty of all ages. Blessed be the God of truth.	І немає в суді її нічого неправого; вона є сила і царство і влада і велич усіх віків: благословенний Бог істини!

And with that he held his peace. And all the people then shouted, and said, Great is Truth, and mighty above all things.	І перестав він говорити. І всі виголосили тоді і сказали: велика істина і сильніша за все.

Then said the king unto him, Ask what thou wilt more than is appointed in the writings, and we will give it thee, because thou art found wisest; and thou shalt sit next me, and shalt be called my cousin.	Тоді цар сказав йому: проси, чого хочеш, більше написаного, і дамо тобі, тому що ти виявився наймудрішим, і будеш сидіти поруч зі мною і будеш називатися родичем моїм.

Then said he unto the king, Remember thy vow, which thou hast vowed to build Jerusalem, in the day when thou camest to thy kingdom,	Тоді сказав він царю: згадай обіцянку, дану тобою в той день, в який ти прийняв царство твоє, що ти побудуєш Єрусалим
44	44
and to send away all the vessels that were taken away out of Jerusalem, which Cyrus set apart, when he vowed to destroy Babylon, and to send them again thither.	і повернеш усі сосуди, взяті з Єрусалима, які відібрав Кир, коли дав обітниці зруйнувати Вавилон, і обіцяв вислати їх туди.

Thou also hast vowed to build up the temple, which the Edomites burned when Judea was made desolate by the Chaldees.	А ти обіцяв побудувати храм, який спалили ідумеї, коли Юдея була спустошена халдеями.
46	46
And now, O lord the king, this is that which I require, and which I desire of thee, and this is the princely liberality proceeding from thyself: I desire therefore that thou make good the vow, the performance whereof with thine own mouth thou hast vowed to the King of heaven.	І про це саме тепер я прошу тебе, господарю царю, і благаю тебе, і в цьому велич твоя: прошу тебе виконати обіцяне, що ти вустами твоїми обіцяв Цареві Небесному виконати.

Then Darius the king stood up, and kissed him, and wrote letters for him unto all the treasurers and lieutenants and captains and governors, that they should safely convey on their way both him, and all those that go up with him to build Jerusalem.	Тоді цар Дарій встав і поцілував його, і написав йому лист до всіх правителів і начальників областей і воєначальників і сатрапів, щоб вони пропустили його і з ним усіх, що йдуть будувати Єрусалим.

He wrote letters also unto the lieutenants that were in Celosyria and Phenice, and unto them in Libanus, that they should bring cedar wood from Libanus unto Jerusalem, and that they should build the city with him.	Також написав лист до всіх місцевих начальників у Келе-Сирії і Фінікії і тим, що знаходяться на Ливані, щоб привозили з Ливану в Єрусалим кедрові дерева і допомагали йому будувати місто.

Moreover he wrote for all the Jews that went out of his realm up into Jewry, concerning their freedom, that no officer, no ruler, no lieutenant, nor treasurer, should forcibly enter into their doors;	Писав про свободу і для всіх юдеїв, які вирушають із царства в Юдею, щоб ніхто з тих, хто має владу, обласний начальник і сатрап і правитель, не приходив до дверей їхніх,

and that all the country which they hold should be free without tribute; and that the Edomites should give over the villages of the Jews which then they held:	але щоб уся країна, якою вони володіють, вилучена була від данини, і щоб ідумеї залишили селища юдеїв, якими вони володіють;

yea, that there should be yearly given twenty talents to the building of the temple, until the time that it were built;	також щоб давали на побудову храму щорічно по двадцять талантів, доки не буде побудований;

and other ten talents yearly, to maintain the burnt offerings upon the altar every day, as they had a commandment to offer seventeen:	і для приношення на жертовник щоденних всепалень, зверх сімнадцяти приписаних, давали ще по десять талантів на рік;

and that all they that went from Babylon to build the city should have free liberty, as well they as their posterity, and all the priests that went away.	і щоб усім, хто вирушає з Вавилона, була воля будувати місто, як самим, так і нащадкам їхнім і всім священикам, які підуть.

He wrote also concerning the charges, and the priests' vestments wherein they minister;	Писав також і про утримання і про священичий одяг, у якому служать.

and likewise for the charges of the Levites, to be given them until the day that the house were finished, and Jerusalem builded up.	Написав давати утримання і левитам до того дня, коли завершиться храм і буде побудований Єрусалим;

And he commanded to give to all that kept the city pensions and wages.	і всім, хто стереже місто, наказав давати платню і продовольство.
57	57
He sent away also all the vessels from Babylon, that Cyrus had set apart; and all that Cyrus had given in commandment, the same charged he also to be done, and sent unto Jerusalem.	Відпустив і всі сосуди, які виділив Кир із Вавилона; і все, що повелів зробити Кир, і він повелів виконати і послати у Єрусалим.

Now when this young man was gone forth, he lifted up his face to heaven toward Jerusalem, and praised the King of heaven,	І коли вийшов юнак, то підняв лице своє до неба навпроти Єрусалима, дякуючи Царю Небесному, і сказав:
59	59
and said, From thee cometh victory, from thee cometh wisdom, and thine is the glory, and I am thy servant.	від Тебе перемога і від Тебе мудрість, і Твоя слава, а я Твій раб.
60	60
Blessed art thou, who hast given me wisdom: and to thee I give thanks, O Lord of our fathers.	Благословенний Ти, що дарував мені мудрість, і дякую Тобі, Господи, Боже батьків наших.
61	61
And so he took the letters, and went out, and came unto Babylon, and told it all his brethren.	І, взявши листи, вирушив і прийшов у Вавилон і оголосив усім братам своїм.
62	62
And they praised the God of their fathers, because he had given them freedom and liberty	І вони дякували Богу батьків своїх за те, що дарував їм волю і дозвіл
63	63
to go up, and to build Jerusalem, and the temple which is called by his name: and they feasted with instruments of musick and gladness seven days.	іти і будувати Єрусалим і храм, на якому наречене ім’я Його. І раділи з музикою і веселістю сім днів.
