Chapter 10	Глава 10

And it came to pass after this that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Annon his son reigned in his stead.	Через деякий час помер цар Аммонитський, і запанував замість нього син його Аннон.

And David said, I will shew mercy to Annon the son of Naas, as his father dealt mercifully with me. And David sent to comfort him concerning his father by the hand of his servants; and the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon.	І сказав Давид: зроблю я милість Аннону, синові Наасовому, за благодіяння, які зробив мені батько його. І послав Давид слуг своїх утішити Аннона за батька його. І прийшли слуги Давидові в землю Аммонитську.

And the princes of the children of Ammon said to Annon their lord, Is it to honour thy father before thee that David has sent comforters to thee? Has not David rather sent his servants to thee that they should search the city, and spy it out and examine it?	Але князі аммонитські сказали Аннону, господареві своєму: невже ти думаєш, що Давид з поваги до батька твого надіслав до тебе утішителів? чи не для того, щоб оглянути місто і виглядіти в ньому і потім зруйнувати його, надіслав Давид слуг своїх до тебе?

And Annon took the servants of David, and shaved their beards, and cut off their garments in the midst as far as their haunches, and sent them away.	І взяв Аннон слуг Давидових, і поголив кожному з них половину бороди, і обрізав одяг їх наполовину, до стегон, й відпустив їх.

And they brought David word concerning the men; and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly dishonoured: and the king said, Remain in Jericho till your beards have grown, and then ye shall return.	Коли донесли про це Давиду, то він послав до них назустріч, бо вони були дуже знечещені. І повелів цар сказати їм: залишайтеся в Єрихоні, поки відростуть бороди ваші, і тодіповернетеся.

And the children of Ammon saw that the people of David were ashamed; and the children of Ammon sent, and hired the Syrians of Bæthraam, and the Syrians of Suba, and Roob, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Amalec with a thousand men, and Istob with twelve thousand men.	І побачили аммонитяни, що вони зробилися ненависними для Давида; і послали аммонитяни найняти сирійців з Беф-Рехова і сирійців Суви двадцять тисяч піших, у царя [Амаликитського] Маахи тисячу чоловік і з Істова дванадцять тисяч чоловік.

And David heard, and sent Joab and all his host, even the mighty men.	Коли почув про це Давид, то послав Іоава з усім військом хоробрих.

And the children of Ammon went forth, and set the battle in array by the door of the gate: those of Syria, Suba, and Roob, and Istob, and Amalec, being by themselves in the field.	І вийшли аммонитяни і розташувалися до битви біля воріт, а сирійці Суви і Рехова, й Істова, і Маахи, стали окремо в полі.

And Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him from that which was opposed in front and from behind, and he chose out some of all the young men of Israel, and they set themselves in array against Syria.	І побачив Іоав, що вороже військо було поставлено проти нього і спереду і ззаду, і вибрав воїнів з усіх добірних в Ізраїлі, і вишикував їх проти сирійців;

And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of Abessa his brother, and they set the battle in array opposite to the children of Ammon.	іншу ж частину людей доручив Авессі, братові своєму, щоб він вишикував їх проти аммонитян.

And he said, If Syria be too strong for me, then shall ye help me: and if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then will we be ready to help thee.	І сказав Іоав: якщо сирійці будуть долати мене, ти допоможеш мені; а якщо аммонитяни тебе будуть долати, я прийду до тебе на допомогу;

Be thou courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the sake of the cities of our God, and the Lord shall do that which is good in his eyes.	будь мужній, і будемо стояти твердо за народ наш і за міста Бога нашого, а Господь зробить, що Йому вгодно.

And Joab and his people with him advanced to battle against Syria, and they fled from before him.	І вступив Іоав з народом, який був у нього, у битву із сирійцями, і вони побігли від нього.

And the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, and they fled from before Abessa, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.	Аммонитяни ж, побачивши, що сирійці біжать, побігли від Авесси і ввійшли в місто. І повернувся Іоав від аммонитян і прийшов у Єрусалим.

And the Syrians saw that they were worsted before Israel, and they gathered themselves together.	Сирійці, бачачи, що вони уражені ізраїльтянами, зібралися разом.

And Adraazar sent and gathered the Syrians from the other side of the river Chalamak, and they came to Ælam; and Sobac the captain of the host of Adraazar was at their head.	І послав Адраазар і покликав сирійців, які за річкою [Халамаком], і прийшли вони до Елама; а Совак, воєначальник Адраазарів, начальствував над ними.

And it was reported to David, and he gathered all Israel, and went over Jordan, and came to Ælam: and the Syrians set the battle in array against David, and fought with him.	Коли донесли про це Давиду, то він зібрав усіх ізраїльтян, і перейшов Йордан і прийшов до Елама. Сирійці вишикувалися проти Давида й билися з ним.

And Syria fled from before Israel, and David destroyed of Syria seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and he smote Sobac the captain of his host, and he died there.	І побігли сирійці від ізраїльтян. Давид знищив у сирійців сімсот колісниць і сорок тисяч вершників; уразив і воєначальника Совака, який там і помер.

And all the kings the servants of Adraazar saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, and they went over to Israel, and served them: and Syria was afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.	Коли всі царі, покірні Адраазару, побачили, що вони уражені ізраїльтянами, то уклали мир з ізраїльтянами і підкорилися їм. А сирійці боялися надалі допомагати аммонитянам.
