| There was a certain man in the land of Ausis, whose name was Job; and that man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, abstaining from everything evil. | Був чоловік у землі Уц, ім’я його Іов; і був чоловік цей непорочний, справедливий і богобоязкий і віддалявся від зла. |

| And he had seven sons and three daughters. | І народилися у нього сім синів і три дочки. |

| And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses in the pastures, and a very great household, and he had a great husbandry on the earth; and that man was most noble of the men of the east. | Майна у нього було: сім тисяч дрібної худоби, три тисячі верблюдів, п’ятсот пар волів і п’ятсот ослиць і дуже багато прислуги; і був чоловік цей знаменитіший за всіх синів Сходу. |

| And his sons visiting one another prepared a banquet every day, taking with them also their three sisters to eat and drink with them. | Сини його сходилися, робили бенкети кожен у своєму домі у свій день, і посилали і запрошували трьох сестер своїх їсти і пити з ними. |

| And when the days of the banquet were completed, Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning, and offered sacrifices for them, according to their number, and one calf for a sin-offering for their souls: for Job said, Lest peradventure my sons have thought evil in their minds against God. Thus then Job did continually. | Коли коло бенкетних днів звершувалося, Іов посилав за ними й освячував їх і, встаючи рано-вранці, підносив всепалення за числом усіх їх [і одного тельця за гріх про душі їхні]. | And it came to pass on a day, that, behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came with them. | І був день, коли прийшли сини Божі стати перед Господом; між ними прийшов і сатана. |
|

| And the Lord said to the devil, Whence art thou come? And the devil answered the Lord, and said, I am come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world. | І сказав Господь сатані: звідки ти прийшов? І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: я ходив по землі й обійшов її. |
|

|
| And the Lord said to him, Hast thou diligently considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a man blameless, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil? | І сказав Господь сатані: чи звернув ти увагу твою на раба Мого Іова? бо немає такого, як він, на землі: чоловік непорочний, справедливий, богобоязкий і віддаляється від зла. |

| Then the devil answered, and said before the Lord, Does Job worship the Lord for nothing? | І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: хіба даром богобоязкий Іов? |
|

|
| Hast thou not made a hedge about him, and about his household, and all his possessions round about? and hast thou not blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his cattle upon the land? | Чи не Ти навколо відгородив його і дім його й усе, що у нього? Діло рук його Ти благословив, і стада його поширюються по землі; |

| But put forth thine hand, and touch all that he has: verily he will bless thee to thy face. | але простягни руку Твою і торкнися всього, що у нього, — чи благословить він Тебе? |
|

| Then the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I give into thine hand all that he has, but touch not himself. So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord. | І сказав Господь сатані: ось, усе, що у нього, у руці твоїй; тільки на нього не простягай руки твоєї. І відійшов сатана від лиця Господа. |

| And it came to pass on a certain day, that Job's sons and his daughters were drinking wine in the house of their elder brother. | І був день, коли сини його і дочки його їли і вино пили в домі первородного брата свого. |
|

| And, behold, there came a messenger to Job, and said to him, The yokes of oxen were ploughing, and the she-asses were feeding near them; | І ось, приходить вісник до Іова і говорить: |

|
| and the spoilers came and took them for a prey, and slew the servants with the sword; and I having escaped alone am come to tell thee. | воли орали, й ослиці паслися поряд з ними, як напали савеяни і взяли їх, а слуг уразили вістрям меча; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе. |

| While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, Fire has fallen from heaven, and burnt up the sheep, and devoured the shepherds likewise; and I having escaped alone am come to tell thee. | Ще він говорив, як приходить інший і каже: вогонь Божий упав з неба й спалив овець і слуг і пожер їх; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе. |

| While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, The horsemen formed three companies against us, and surrounded the camels, and took them for a prey, and slew the servants with the sword; and I only escaped, and am come to tell thee. | Ще він говорив, як приходить інший і каже: халдеї розташувалися трьома загонами і кинулися на верблюдів і взяли їх, а слуг уразили вістрям меча; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе. |

| While he is yet speaking, another messenger comes, saying to Job, While thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking with their elder brother, | Ще цей говорив, приходить інший і каже: сини твої і дочки твої їли і пили вино у домі первородного брата свого; |

|
| suddenly a great wind came on from the desert, and caught the four corners of the house, and the house fell upon thy children, and they are dead; and I have escaped alone, and am come to tell thee. | і ось, великий вітер прийшов з пустелі й охопив чотири кути дому, і дім упав на отроків, і вони померли; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе. |

| So Job arose, and rent his garments, and shaved the hair of his head, and fell on the earth, and worshipped, | Тоді Іов встав і роздер верхній одяг свій, обстриг голову свою й упав на землю і поклонився |

|
| and said, I myself came forth naked from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away: as it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; blessed be the name of the Lord. | і сказав: нагим я вийшов із утроби матері моєї, нагим і повернуся. Господь дав, Господь і взяв; [як угодно було Господу, так і зробилося;] нехай буде ім’я Господнє благословенне! |

| In all these events that befel him Job sinned not at all before the Lord, and did not impute folly to God. | У всьому цьому не згрішив Іов і не промовив нічого нерозумного про Бога. |

| And it came to pass on a certain day, that the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came among them to stand before the Lord. | Був день, коли прийшли сини Божі стати перед Господом; між ними прийшов і сатана стати перед Господом. |
|

|
| And the Lord said to the devil, Whence comest thou? Then the devil said before the Lord, I am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth. | І сказав Господь сатані: звідки ти прийшов? І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: я ходив по землі й обійшов її. |
|

|
| And the Lord said to the devil, Hast thou then observed my servant Job, that there is none of men upon the earth like him, a harmless, true, blameless, godly man, abstaining from all evil? and he yet cleaves to innocence, whereas thou hast told me to destroy his substance without cause? | І сказав Господь сатані: чи звернув ти увагу твою на раба Мого Іова? бо немає такого, як він, на землі: чоловік непорочний, справедливий, богобоязкий і віддаляється від зла, і досі твердий у своїй непорочності; а ти збуджував Мене проти нього, щоб погубити його невинно. |

| And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, all that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life. | І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: шкіру за шкіру, а за життя своє віддасть людина усе, що є у неї; |
|

|

|
| Nay, but put forth thine hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: verily he will bless thee to thy face. | але простягни руку Твою і торкнися кістки його і плоті його, — чи благословить він Тебе? |
|

|
| And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to thee; only save his life. | І сказав Господь сатані: ось, він у руках твоїх, тільки душу його збережи. |
|

|
| So the devil went out from the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from his feet to his head. | І відійшов сатана від лиця Господа й уразив Іова проказою лютою від підошви ноги його по саме тім’я його. |
|

|

|
| And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung-heap outside the city. | І взяв він собі черепок, щоб шкребти себе ним, і сів у попіл [поза селищем]. |
|

|
| And when much time had passed, his wife said to him, How long wilt thou hold out, saying, | І сказала йому дружина його: ти все ще твердий у непорочності твоїй! похули Бога і помри*. |

| Behold, I wait yet a little while, expecting the hope of my deliverance? | |
|

|
|
| for, behold, thy memorial is abolished from the earth, even thy sons and daughters, the pangs and pains of my womb which I bore in vain with sorrows; | |
|

|
|
| and thou thyself sittest down to spend the nights in the open air among the corruption of worms, | |
|
9d
|
|
| and I am a wanderer and a servant from place to place and house to house, waiting for the setting of the sun, that I may rest from my labours and my pangs which now beset me: | |
|

|
|
| but say some word against the Lord, and die. | |
|

|
10
|
| But he looked on her, and said to her, Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God. | Але він сказав їй: ти говориш як одна з безумних: невже добре ми будемо приймати від Бога, а лихого не будемо приймати? В усьому цьому не згрішив Іов вустами своїми. |

| Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Thæmans, Baldad sovereign of the Saucheans, Sophar king of the Minæans: and they came to him with one accord, to comfort and to visit him. | І почули троє друзів Іова про всі ці біди, які осягли його, і пішли кожен зі свого місця: Елифаз феманитянин, Вилдад савхеянин і Софар наамитянин, і зійшлися, щоб іти разом тужити з ним і втішати його. |

| And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and rent every one his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads, | І, піднявши очі свої здаля, вони не впізнали його; і піднесли голос свій і заридали; і роздер кожен верхній одяг свій, і кидали порох над головами своїми до неба. |

| and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and no one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful and very great. | І сиділи з ним на землі сім днів і сім ночей; і ніхто не говорив йому ні слова, тому що бачили, що страждання його дуже великі. |

| After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day, | Після того відкрив Іов вуста свої і прокляв день свій. |

| saying, | І почав Іов і сказав: |

|
| Let the day perish in which I was born, and that night in which they said, Behold a man-child! | згинь день, у який я народився, і ніч, у яку сказано: зачалася людина! |
|

|

|
| Let that night be darkness, and let not the Lord regard it from above, neither let light come upon it. | День той нехай буде темрявою; нехай не шукає його Бог з висоти, і нехай не засяє над ним світло! |
|
5
|
5
|
| But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it; | Нехай затьмарить його темрява і тінь смертна, нехай обійме його хмара, нехай страшаться його, як палючої спеки! |
|

|

|
| let that day and night be cursed, let darkness carry them away; let it not come into the days of the year, neither let it be numbered with the days of the months. | Ніч та, — нехай володіє нею морок, нехай не рахується вона в днях року, нехай не ввійде у число місяців! |
|

|
| But let that night be pain, and let not mirth come upon it, nor joy. | О! ніч та — нехай буде вона безлюдна; нехай не ввійде в неї радість! |
|

|
| But let him that curses that day curse it, even he that is ready to attack the great whale. | Нехай проклянуть її ті, що проклинають день, здатні розбудити левиафана! |
|

|
| Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain dark, and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise: | Нехай померкнуть зірки світанку її: нехай чекає вона світла, і воно не приходить, і нехай не побачить вона вій денниці |
|

|
| because it shut not up the gates of my mother's womb, for so it would have removed sorrow from my eyes. | за те, що не зачинила дверей утроби матері моєї і не приховала горя від очей моїх! |
|

|
| For why died I not in the belly? and why did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately? | Чому я не помер, виходячи з утроби, і не помер, коли вийшов з утроби? |

|
| And why did the knees support me? and why did I suck the breasts? | Навіщо прийняли мене коліна? навіщо було мені годуватися грудьми? |

| Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest, | Тепер би лежав я і спочивав; спав би, і мені було б спокійно |

| with kings and councillors of the earth, who gloried in their swords; | з царями і радниками землі, які забудовували для себе пустелі, |
|

|
| or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, who filled their houses with silver: | або з князями, у яких було золото, і які наповнювали доми свої сріблом; |
|

|
| or I should have been as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother's womb, or as infants who never saw light. | або, як викидень прихований, я не існував би, як немовлята, які не побачили світла. |
|

|
| There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest. | Там беззаконні перестають наводити страх, і там відпочивають виснажені в силі. |
|

|
| And the men of old time have together ceased to hear the exactor's voice. | Там в’язні разом насолоджуються спокоєм і не чують криків приставника. |

| The small and great are there, and the servant that feared his lord. | Малий і великий там рівні, і раб вільний від господаря свого. |
|

|

|
| For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to the souls which are in griefs? | Навіщо дано страднику світло, і життя засмученим душею, |
|

|

|
| who desire death, and obtain it not, digging for it as for treasures; | які чекають на смерть, і немає її, які викопали б її охочіше, ніж скарб, |
|

|

|
| and would be very joyful if they should gain it? | зраділи б до захвату, захоплювалися б, що знайшли гріб? |
|

|
| Death is rest to such a man, for God has hedged him in. | Навіщо дано світло людині, путь якої закрита, і яку Бог оточив мороком? |

| For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me. | бо жахливе, чого я жахався, те й осягло мене; і чого я боявся, те і прийшло до мене. |

| I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me. | Немає мені миру, немає спокою, немає відради: спіткало нещастя. |

| Then Eliphaz the Thæmanite answered and said, | І відповів Елифаз феманитянин і сказав: |

| Hast thou been often spoken to in distress? but who shall endure the force of thy words? | якщо спробуємо ми сказати тобі слово, — чи не тяжко буде тобі? Утім, хто може заборонити слову! |

|
| For whereas thou hast instructed many, and hast strengthened the hands of the weak one, | Ось, ти наставляв багатьох і опущені руки підтримував, |

|
| and hast supported the failing with words, and hast imparted courage to feeble knees. | того, хто падав, піднімали слова твої, і коліна, що гнулися, ти укріпляв. |

| Yet now that pain has come upon thee, and touched thee, thou art troubled. | А тепер дійшло до тебе, і ти знеміг; торкнулося тебе, і ти упав духом. |

| Is not thy fear founded in folly, thy hope also, and the mischief of thy way? | Богобоязкість твоя чи не повинна бути твоєю надією, і непорочність путів твоїх — упованням твоїм? |

| Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed? | Згадай же, чи гинув хто невинний, і де праведних викорінювали? |

|
| Accordingly as I have seen men ploughing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves. | Як я бачив, ті, що орали нечестя і сіяли зло, пожинають його; |
|

|
| They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath. | від подуву Божого гинуть і від духу гніву Його зникають. |
|

|

|
| The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched. | Ревіння лева і голос того, хто рикає, умовкає, і зуби скимнів ламаються; |
|

|
11
|
| The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another. | могутній лев гине без здобичі, і діти левиці розсіюються. |
|

|
| But if there had been any truth in thy words, none of these evils would have befallen thee. Shall not mine ear receive excellent revelations from him? | І ось, до мене таємно прийшло слово, і вухо моє прийняло щось від нього. |

| But as when terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night, | Серед міркувань про нічні видіння, коли сон находить на людей, |

|
| horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake. | обійняв мене жах і трепет і потряс усі кістки мої. |
|

|

|
| And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered. | І дух пройшов наді мною, дибом стало волосся на мені. |
|

|
| I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, saying, | Він став, — але я не розпізнав вигляду його, — тільки обрис був перед очима моїми; тихе віяння, — і я чую голос: |

|
| What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works? | чи людина праведніша за Бога? і чи людина чистіша за Творця свого? |
|
18
|
18
|
| Whereas he trusts not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels. | Ось, Він і слугам Своїм не довіряє і в ангелах Своїх убачає недоліки: |
|
19
|
19
|
| But as for them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth. | тим більше — в тих, хто живе у храминах із суміші, основа яких порох, які знищуються швидше за міль. |
|
20
|
20
|
| And from morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they cannot help themselves. | Між ранком і вечором вони розпадаються; не побачиш, як вони зовсім зникнуть. |
|

|

|
| For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom. | Чи не гинуть з ними і чесноти їхні? Вони вмирають, не досягнувши мудрости. |

|
| But call, if any one will hearken to thee, or if thou shalt see any of the holy angels. | Взивай, якщо є той, що відповідає тобі. І до кого зі святих звернешся ти? |
|

|

|
| For wrath destroys the foolish one, and envy slays him that has gone astray. | Так, дурня убиває гнівливість, і нерозумного губить роздратування. |
|

|
| And I have seen foolish ones taking root: but suddenly their habitation was devoured. | Бачив я, як дурень вкорінюється, і негайно прокляв дім його. |
|

|

|
| Let their children be far from safety, and let them be crushed at the doors of vile men, and let there be no deliverer. | Діти його далекі від щастя, їх будуть бити біля воріт, і не буде захисника. |
|

|

|
| For what they have collected, the just shall eat; but they shall not be delivered out of calamities: let their strength be utterly exhausted. | Жниво його з’їсть голодний і з-за терну візьме його, і спраглі поглинуть майно його. |

|
| For labour cannot by any means come out of the earth, nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains: | Так, не з пороху виходить горе, і не з землі виростає лихо; |

| yet man is born to labour, and even so the vulture's young seek the high places. | але людина народжується на страждання, як іскри, щоб підніматися вгору. |
|

|
| Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord, and will call upon the Lord, the sovereign of all; | Але я до Бога звернувся б, передав би справу мою Богу, |
|

|
| who does great things and untraceable, glorious things also, and marvellous, of which there is no number: | Який творить діла великі і недослідимі, дивні без міри, |
|
10
|
10
|
| who gives rain upon the earth, sending water on the earth: | дає дощ на лице землі і посилає води на лице полів; |
|
11
|
11
|
| who exalts the lowly, and raises up them that are lost: | принижених поставляє на висоту, і ті, що ремствують, підносяться на спасіння. |
|
12
|
12
|
| frustrating the counsels of the crafty, and their hands shall not perform the truth: | Він руйнує задуми підступних, і руки їхні не довершують намірів. |
|
13
|
13
|
| who takes the wise in their wisdom, and subverts the counsel of the crafty. | Він уловлює мудреців їхнім же лукавством, і рада хитрих стає марною: |
|
14
|
14
|
| In the day darkness shall come upon them, and let them grope in the noon-day even as in the night: | вдень вони зустрічають темряву й опівдні ходять навпомацки, як уночі. |
|
15
|
15
|
| and let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty. | Він спасає бідного від меча, від уст їх і від руки сильного. |
|
16
|
16
|
| And let the weak have hope, but the mouth of the unjust be stopped. | І є нещасному надія, і неправда закриває вуста свої. |
|
17
|
17
|
| But blessed is the man whom the Lord has reproved; and reject not thou the chastening of the Almighty. | Блаженна людина, яку напоумлює Бог, і тому покарання Вседержителя не відкидай, |
|
18
|
18
|
| For he causes a man to be in pain, and restores him again: he smites, and his hands heal. | бо Він завдає рани і Сам обв’язує їх; Він уражає, і Його ж руки лікують. |
|

|
| Six times he shall deliver thee out of distresses: and in the seventh harm shall not touch thee. | У шести лихах врятує тебе, і в сьомому не торкнеться тебе зло. |
|

|
| In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in war he shall free thee from the power of the sword. | Під час голоду визволить тебе від смерти, і на війні — від руки меча. |
|

|
| He shall hide thee from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not be afraid of coming evils. | Від бича язика сховаєш себе і не убоїшся спустошення, коли воно прийде. |
|

|
| Thou shalt laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless: and thou shalt not be afraid of wild beasts. | Спустошенню і голоду посмієшся і звірів землі не убоїшся, |
|

|

|
| For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee. | бо з каменями польовими у тебе союз, і звірі польові у мирі з тобою. |
|
24
|
24
|
| Then shalt thou know that thy house shall be at peace, and the provision for thy tabernacle shall not fail. | І дізнаєшся, що намет твій у безпеці, і будеш дивитися за домом твоїм, і не згрішиш. |
|
25
|
25
|
| And thou shalt know that thy seed shall be abundant; and thy children shall be like the herbage of the field. | І побачиш, що сім’я твоє численне, і паростки твої, як трава на землі. |
|
26
|
26
|
| And thou shalt come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season, or as a heap of the corn-flour collected in proper time. | Увійдеш у гріб у зрілості, як укладаються снопи пшениці у свій час. |
|

|

|
| Behold, we have thus sought out these matters; these are what we have heard: but do thou reflect with thyself, if thou hast done anything wrong. | Ось, що ми пізнали; так воно і є; вислухай це і зауваж для себе. |

| But Job answered and said, | І відповів Іов і сказав: |

| Will the Lord be unjust when he judges; or will he that has made all things pervert justice? | Невже Бог спотворює суд, і Вседержитель перетворює правду? |

| If thy sons have sinned before him, he has cast them away because of their transgression. | Якщо сини твої згрішили перед Ним, то Він і віддав їх у руку беззаконня їхнього. |

| But be thou early in prayer to the Lord Almighty. | Якщо ж ти знайдеш Бога і помолишся Вседержителю, |

| Though then thy beginning should be small, yet thy end should be unspeakably great. | І якщо спочатку в тебе було мало, то згодом буде дуже багато. |

| For ask of the former generation, and search diligently among the race of our fathers: | Бо запитай у минулих родів і вникни у спостереження батьків їх; |

| (for we are of yesterday, and know nothing; for our life upon the earth is a shadow:) | а ми — вчорашні і нічого не знаємо, тому що наші дні на землі тінь. |

| Thus then shall be the end of all that forget the Lord: for the hope of the ungodly shall perish. | Такі путі всіх, хто забуває Бога, і надія лицеміра загине; |

| For his house shall be without inhabitants, and his tent shall prove a spider's web. | уповання його підрізане, і впевненість його — дім павука. |
|

| If he should prop up his house, it shall not stand: and when he has taken hold of it, it shall not remain. | Обіпреться об дім свій і не встоїть; схопиться за нього і не утримається. |

| For it is moist under the sun, and his branch shall come forth out of his dung-heap. | Він зеленіє перед сонцем, за сад простягаються гілки його; |

| He lies down upon a gathering of stones, and shall live in the midst of flints. | у купу каміння вплітається коріння його, між камінням врізується. |

|
| If God should destroy him, his place shall deny him. Hast thou not seen such things, | Але коли вирвуть його з місця його, воно відмовиться від нього: «я не бачило тебе!» |

| that such is the overthrow of the ungodly? and out of the earth another shall grow. | Ось радість шляху його! а із землі виростають інші. |
|

| For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but he will not receive any gift of the ungodly. | Бачиш, Бог не відкидає непорочного і не підтримує руки? лиходіїв. |

| But he will fill with laughter the mouth of the sincere, and their lips with thanksgiving. | Він ще наповнить сміхом вуста твої і губи твої радісним вигуком. |

| But their adversaries shall clothe themselves with shame; and the habitation of the ungodly shall perish. | Ненависники твої вдягнуться в сором, і намету нечестивих не стане. |

| I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord? | правда! знаю, що так; але як виправдається людина перед Богом? |

| For if he would enter into judgment with him, God would not hearken to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand. | Якщо захоче вступити в суперечку з Ним, то не відповість Йому на жодне з тисячі. |

| For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured? | Премудрий серцем і могутній силою; хто повставав проти Нього і залишався у спокої? |

| Who wears out the mountains, and men know it not: who overturns them in anger. | Він пересуває гори, і не впізнають їх: Він перетворює їх у гніві Своєму; |

| Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south. | створив Ас, Кесиль і Хима* і тайники півдня; |

| Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable. | робить велике, недослідиме і дивовижне без міри! |

| If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known it. | Ось, Він пройде переді мною, і не побачу Його; пронесеться, і не помічу Його. |

| If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What hast thou done? | Візьме, і хто заборонить Йому? хто скаже Йому: що Ти робиш? |

| For if he has turned away his anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him. | Бог не відверне гніву Свого; перед Ним упадуть поборники гордині. |

| Oh then that he would hearken to me, or judge my cause. | Тим більше чи можу я відповідати Йому і вишукувати собі слова перед Ним? |

| For though I be righteous, he will not hearken to me: I will intreat his judgment. | Хоч би я і правий був, але не буду відповідати, а буду благати Суддю мого. |

| And if I should call and he should not hearken, I cannot believe that he has listened to my voice. | Якби я воззвав, і Він відповів мені, — я не повірив би, що голос мій почув Той, |

| Let him not crush me with a dark storm: but he has made my bruises many without cause. | Хто у вихорі вражає мене і примножує невинно мої рани, |

| For he suffers me not to take breath, but he has filled me with bitterness. | не дає мені перевести дух, але пересичує мене гіркотою. |

| For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgment? | Якщо діяти силою, то Він могутній; якщо судом, хто зведе мене з Ним? |

| For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse. | Якщо я буду виправдовуватися, то мої ж вуста звинуватять мене; якщо я невинний, то Він визнає мене винним. |

| For even if I have sinned, I know it not in my soul: but my life is taken away. | Невинний я; не хочу знати душі моєї, зневажаю життя моє. |

| thou hadst thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment had abhorred me. | то і тоді Ти зануриш мене у бруд, і буде гидувати мною одяг мій. |

| For thou art not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgment. | Тому що Він не людина, як я, щоб я міг відповідати Йому і йти разом з Ним на суд! |

| Would that he our mediator were present, and a reprover, and one who should hear the cause between both. | Немає між нами посередника, який поклав би руку свою на обох нас. |

|
| Let him remove his rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me: | Нехай відведе Він від мене жезл Свій, і страх Його нехай не жахає мене, — |

| Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans upon him: I will speak being straitened in the bitterness of my soul. | Обридло душі моїй життя моє; віддамся суму моєму; буду говорити в скорботі душі моєї. |

| And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and wherefore hast thou thus judged me? | Скажу Богу: не звинувачуй мене; оголоси мені, за що Ти зі мною борешся? |

| Is it good before thee if I be unrighteous? for thou hast disowned the work of thy hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly. | Чи добре для Тебе, що Ти пригнічуєш, що зневажаєш діла рук Твоїх, а на раду нечестивих посилаєш світло? |

|
| Or dost thou see as a mortal sees? or wilt thou look as a man sees? | Хіба у Тебе плотські очі, і Ти дивишся, як дивиться людина? |

| Hast thou not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese? | Чи не Ти вилив мене, як молоко, і, як сир, згустив мене, |

| And thou didst clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews. | шкірою і плоттю одяг мене, кістками і жилами скріпив мене, |

| And thou didst bestow upon me life and mercy, and thy oversight has preserved my spirit. | життя і милість дарував мені, і піклування Твоє зберігало дух мій? |

| Having these things in thyself, I know that thou canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with thee. | Але і те приховував Ти в серці Своєму, — знаю, що це було в Тебе, — |

| And if I should sin, thou watchest me; and thou hast not cleared me from iniquity. | бо якщо я згрішу, Ти помітиш і не залишиш гріха мого без покарання. |

| Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour. | Якщо я винен, горе мені! якщо і правий, то не насмілюся підняти голови моєї. Я пересичений приниженням; глянь на страждання моє: |

| For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again thou hast changed and art terribly destroying me; | воно збільшується. Ти женешся за мною, як лев, і знову нападаєш на мене і дивним являєшся в мені. |

| For thou shalt be at ease, and there shall be no one to fight against thee; and many shall charge, and make supplication to thee. | Будеш лежати, і не буде того, що страшить, і багато хто буде підлещуватися до тебе. |

| Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will. | Але я до Вседержителя хотів би говорити і бажав би змагатися з Богом. |
|

|
| But ye are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases. | А ви плітники неправди; усі ви марні лікарі. |
|

|

|
| But would that ye were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end. | О, якби ви тільки мовчали! це було б поставлено вам за мудрість. |

|
| But hear ye the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips. | Вислухайте ж міркування мої і вникніть у заперечення вуст моїх. |

| For it were well if he would thoroughly search you: for though doing all things in your power ye should attach yourselves to him, | Чи добре буде, коли Він випробує вас? Чи обманете Його, як обманюють людину? |

| he will not reprove you at all the less: but if moreover ye should secretly respect persons, | Суворо покарає Він вас, хоч ви і приховано лицемірите. |

| shall not his whirlpool sweep you round, and terror from him fall upon you? | Невже велич Його не страшить вас, і страх Його не нападає на вас? |

|
| And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay. | Нагадування ваші подібні до попелу; опори ваші — оплоти глиняні. |

| Wilt thou be startled at me, as at a leaf shaken by the wind? or wilt thou set thyself against me as against grass borne upon the breeze? | Чи не зірваний листок Ти розтрощуєш і чи не суху соломину переслідуєш? |

| For thou hast written evil things against me, and thou hast compassed me with the sins of my youth. | Бо Ти пишеш на мене гірке і ставиш у провину мені гріхи юности моєї, |

| For a mortal born of a woman is short-lived, and full of wrath. | Людина, народжена жінкою, короткочасна і пересичена печалями: |

| Or he falls like a flower that has bloomed; and he departs like a shadow, and cannot continue. | як квітка, вона виростає й опадає; тікає, як тінь, і не зупиняється. |

| Hast thou not taken account even of him, and caused him to enter into judgment before thee? | І на неї-то Ти відкриваєш очі Твої, і мене ведеш на суд з Тобою? |

| For who shall be pure from uncleanness? not even one; | Хто народиться чистим від нечистого? Жоден. |
|

|

| And verily a mountain falling will utterly be destroyed, and a rock shall be worn out of its place. | Але гора, падаючи, руйнується, і скеля сходить з місця свого; |

| Thou art guilty by the words of thy mouth, neither hast thou discerned the words of the mighty. | Нечестя твоє так налаштувало вуста твої, і ти обрав язик лукавих. |

| Let thine own mouth, and not me, reprove thee: and thy lips shall testify against thee. | Тебе звинувачують уста твої, а не я, і твій язик говорить проти тебе. |

| What! art thou the first man that was born? or wert thou established before the hills? | Хіба ти першою людиною народився і раніше пагорбів створений? |

| Or hast thou heard the ordinance of the Lord? or has God used thee as his counsellor? and has wisdom come only to thee? | Хіба раду Божу ти чув і залучив до себе премудрість? |

| Truly among us are both the old and very aged man, more advanced in days than thy father. | І сивоволосий і старець є між нами, що днями перевищує батька твого. |

| Thou hast been scourged for but few of thy sins: thou hast spoken haughtily and extravagantly. | Хіба малі для тебе утішення Божі? І це невідомо тобі? |

| What has thine heart dared? or what have thine eyes aimed at, | До чого закликає тебе серце твоє, і чому так гордо дивишся? |

| For who, being a mortal, is such that he shall be blameless? or, who that is born of a woman, that he should be just? | Що таке людина, щоб бути їй чистою, і щоб народженому жінкою бути праведним? |

| Forasmuch as he trusts not his saints; and the heaven is not pure before him. | Ось, Він і святим Своїм не довіряє, і небеса нечисті в очах Його: |

| things wise men say, and their fathers have not hidden. | що чули мудрі і не приховали того, що почули від батьків своїх, |

|
| To them alone the earth was given, and no stranger came upon them. | яким одним віддана була земля, і серед яких чужий не ходив. |

|
| All the life of the ungodly is spent in care, and the years granted to the oppressor are numbered. | Нечестивий мучить себе в усі дні свої, і число років закрите від гнобителя; |

| And his terror is in his ears: just when he seems to be at peace, his overthrow will come. | звук жахів у вухах його; під час миру іде на нього згубник. |

| For he has lifted his hands against the Lord, and he has hardened his neck against the Almighty Lord. | за те, що він простягав проти Бога руку свою і противився Вседержителю, |

|

| Neither shall he in any wise escape the darkness: let the wind blast his blossom, and let his flower fall off. | Не втече від пітьми; паростки його висушить полум’я і подихом вуст своїх втягне його. |

| Let him not think that he shall endure; for his end shall be vanity. | Нехай не довіряє суєті заблудлий, тому що суєта буде і відплатою йому. |

| My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids. | Обличчя моє почервоніло від плачу, і на повіках моїх тінь смерти, |

| Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure. | попри все те, що немає вкраденого в руках моїх, і молитва моя чиста. |

|
| Earth, cover not over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place. | Земле! не закрий моєї крови, і нехай не буде місця воланню моєму. |
|

| And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high. | І нині ось на небесах Свідок мій, і Заступник мій у вишніх! |

| Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even as the son of man with his neighbour! | О, якби чоловік міг змагатися з Богом, як син людський із ближнім своїм! |

| I perish, carried away by the wind, and I seek for burial, and obtain it not. | Дихання моє ослабло; дні мої вгасають; гроби переді мною. |

| Weary I intreat; and what have I done? and strangers have stolen my goods. | Якби не глузування їх, то і серед спорів їх око моє перебувало б спокійним. |
|

|
| Who is this? let him join hands with me. | Заступися, поручися Сам за мене перед Собою! інакше хто поручиться за мене? |
|

|

|
| For thou hast hid their heart from wisdom; therefore thou shalt not exalt them. | Бо Ти закрив серце їх від розуміння, і тому не даси торжествувати їм. |
|

|

|
| He shall promise mischief to his companions: but their eyes have failed for their children. | Хто прирікає друзів своїх на здобич, у дітей того очі витечуть. |
|

|
| But thou hast made me a byword among the nations, and I am become a scorn to them. | Він поставив мене притчею для народу і посміховищем для нього. |
|

|
| For my eyes are dimmed through pain; I have been grievously beset by all. | Помутніли від горя очі мої, і всі члени мої, як тінь. |
|

|
| Wonder has seized true men upon this; and let the just rise up against the transgressor. | Здивуються від цього праведні, і невинний обуриться на лицеміра. |
|

| But let the faithful hold on his own way, and let him that is pure of hands take courage. | Але праведник буде міцно триматися путі своєї, і чистий руками буде більше і більше утверджуватися. |

| Howbeit, do ye all strengthen yourselves and come now, for I do not find truth in you. | Виступайте, всі ви, і підійдіть; не знайду я мудрого між вами. |

| My days have passed in groaning, and my heart-strings are broken. | Дні мої минули; думи мої — надбання серця мого — розбиті. |
|

| I have turned the night into day: the light is short because of darkness. | А вони ніч хочуть перетворити на день, світло наблизити до лиця пітьми. |
|

| For if I remain, Hades is my habitation: and my bed has been made in darkness. | Якби я й очікувати став, то пекло — дім мій; у пітьмі постелю я постіль мою; |

| I have called upon death to be my father, and corruption to be my mother and sister. | гробу скажу: ти батько мій, черві: ти мати моя і сестра моя. |

| Where then is yet my hope? or where shall I see my good? | Де ж після цього надія моя? і очікуване мною хто побачить? |
|

| Will they go down with me to Hades, or shall we go down together to the tomb? | У пекло зійде вона і буде спочивати зі мною у поросі. |

| Then Baldad the Sauchite answered and said, | І відповів Вилдад савхеянин і сказав: |

| How long wilt thou continue? forbear, that we also may speak. | коли ж покладете ви кінець таким словам? обміркуйте, і потім будемо говорити. |
|

|

|
| For wherefore have we been silent before thee like brutes? | Навіщо вважатися нам за тварин і бути приниженими у власних очах ваших? |
|

|
4
|
| Anger has possessed thee: for what if thou shouldest die; would the earth under heaven be desolate? or shall the mountains be overthrown from their foundations? | О ти, що роздираєш душу твою у гніві твоєму! Невже для тебе — спустіти землі, і скелі зрушити з місця свого? |
|

|
5
|
| But the light of the ungodly shall be quenched, and their flame shall not go up. | Так, світло в беззаконного погасне, і не залишиться іскри від вогню його. |
|

|

|
| His light shall be darkness in his habitation, and his lamp shall be put out with him. | Померкне світло в наметі його, і світильник його погасне над ним. |
|

|
| Let the meanest of men spoil his goods, and let his counsel deceive him. | Скоротяться кроки могутности його, і подолає його власний намір його, |
|

|
8
|
| His foot also has been caught in a snare, and let it be entangled in a net. | бо він потрапить у сіті свої ногами і по тенетах ходити буде. |
|

|
| And let snares come upon him: he shall strengthen those that thirst for his destruction. | Петля зачепить за ногу його, і грабіжник уловить його. |
|

|
| His snare is hid in the earth, and that which shall take him is by the path. | Потай розкладені по землі сильці для нього і пастки на дорозі. |
|
11

|
| Let pains destroy him round about, and let many enemies come about him, | З усіх боків будуть страшити його жахи і примусять його кидатися туди і сюди. |
|

|
12
|
| vex him with distressing hunger: and a signal destruction has been prepared for him. | Виснажиться від голоду сила його, і загибель готова, збоку в нього. |
|

|
| Let the soles of his feet be devoured: and death shall consume his beauty. | З’їсть члени тіла його, з’їсть члени його первісток смерти. |
|

|
| And let health be utterly banished from his tabernacle, and let distress seize upon him with a charge from the king. | Вигнана буде з намету його надія його, і це зведе його до царя жахів. |
|

|
| It shall dwell in his tabernacle in his night: his excellency shall be sown with brimstone. | Оселяться в наметі його, тому що він уже не його; житло його посипане буде сіркою. |
|

|
| His roots shall be dried up from beneath, and his crop shall fall away from above. | Знизу підсохнуть корені його, і зверху зів’януть гілки його. |
|

|
| Let his memorial perish out of the earth, and his name shall be publicly cast out. | Пам’ять про нього зникне з землі, й імені його не буде на площі. |
|

|
| Let one drive him from light into darkness. | Виженуть його зі світла в темряву і зітруть його з лиця землі. |
|
19
|
19
|
| He shall not be known among his people, nor his house preserved on the earth. | Ні сина його, ні онука не буде в народі його, і нікого не залишиться в оселях його. |
|
20
|
20
|
| But strangers shall dwell in his possessions: the last groaned for him, and wonder seized the first. | Про день його жахнуться нащадки, і сучасники будуть обійняті тремтінням. |
|
21
|
21
|
| These are the houses of the unrighteous, and this is the place of them that know not the Lord. | Такі оселі беззаконного, і таке місце того, хто не знає Бога. |

Chapter 19

| Then Job answered and said, | І відповів Іов і сказав: |

| How long will ye vex my soul, and destroy me with words? only know that the Lord has dealt with me thus. | доки будете мучити душу мою і мучити мене словами? |
|

|
| Ye speak against me; ye do not feel for me, but bear hard upon me. | Ось, уже разів десять ви соромили мене і не соромитеся гнітити мене. |
|

|
| Yea verily, I have erred in truth, (but the error abides with myself) | Якщо я і дійсно згрішив, то провина моя при мені залишається. |
|

| in having spoken words which it was not right to speak; and my words err, and are unseasonable. | |
|

|
| But alas! for ye magnify yourselves against me, and insult me with reproach. | Якщо ж ви хочете величатися наді мною і дорікати мене ганьбою моєю, |

|
| Know then that it is the Lord that has troubled me, and has raised his bulwark against me. | то знайте, що Бог відкинув мене й обклав мене Своєю сіткою. |
|

| Behold, I laugh at reproach; I will not speak: or I will cry out, but there is nowhere judgment. | Ось, я кричу; образа! і ніхто не слухає; волаю, і немає суду. |
|

|
| I am fenced round about, and can by no means escape: he has set darkness before my face. | Він перекрив мені дорогу, і не можу пройти, і на шляхи мої поклав темряву. |
|

|
| And he has stripped me of my glory, and has taken the crown from my head. | Стягнув з мене славу мою і зняв вінець з голови моєї. |
|

|
| He has torn me round about, and I am gone: and he has cut off my hope like a tree. | Зовсім зруйнував мене, і я відходжу; і, як дерево, Він вивергнув надію мою. |

|
| And he has dreadfully handled me in anger, and has counted me for an enemy. | Запалав на мене гнівом Своїм і вважає мене між ворогами Своїми. |

| His troops also came upon me with one accord, liers in wait compassed my ways. | Полки Його прийшли разом і спрямували шлях свій до мене і розташувалися навколо намету мого. |
|

|
| My brethren have stood aloof from me; they have recognised strangers rather than me: and my friends have become pitiless. | Братів моїх Він віддалив від мене, і ті, що знають мене, цураються мене. |
|

|

|
| My nearest of kin have not acknowledged me, and they that knew my name, have forgotten me. | Покинули мене близькі мої, і знайомі мої забули мене. |
|

|
| As for my household, and my maid-servants, I was a stranger before them. | Прибулі у домі моєму і служниці мої чужим вважають мене; стороннім став я в очах їхніх. |
|

|
| I called my servant, and he hearkened not; and my mouth intreated him. | Кличу слугу мого, і він не відгукується; вустами моїми я повинен благати його. |
|

| And I besought my wife, and earnestly intreated the sons of my concubines. | Дихання моє стало огидним дружині моїй, і я повинен благати її заради дітей утроби моєї. |
|

|
| But they rejected me for ever; whenever I rise up, they speak against me. | Навіть малі діти зневажають мене: піднімаюся, і вони знущаються з мене. |
|

|
19
|
| They that saw me abhorred me: the very persons whom I had loved, rose up against me. | Гребують мною всі наперсники мої, і ті, яких я любив, повернулися проти мене. |
|
20
|
20
|
| My flesh is corrupt under my skin, and my bones are held in my teeth. | Кістки мої прилипли до шкіри моєї і плоті моєї, і я залишився тільки зі шкірою біля зубів моїх. |
|
21

21
|
| Pity me, pity me, O friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me. | Помилуйте мене, помилуйте мене ви, друзі мої, бо рука Божа торкнулася мене. |
|

|
| Wherefore do ye persecute me as also the Lord does, and are not satisfied with my flesh? | Навіщо і ви переслідуєте мене, як Бог, і плоттю моєю не можете насититися? |
|

| For oh that my words were written, and that they were recorded in a book for ever, | О, якби записані були слова мої! Якби накреслені були вони у книзі |

| with an iron pen and lead, or graven in the rocks! | різцем залізним з оловом, — на вічний час на камені вирізані були! |
|

|
| For I know that he is eternal who is about to deliver me, | А я знаю, Відкупитель мій живий, і Він в останній день воскресить з пороху цю мою шкіру, що розпадається, |
|

|
| and to raise up upon the earth my skin that endures these sufferings: for these things have been accomplished to me of the Lord; | і я у плоті моїй побачу Бога. |
|
27
|
27
|
| which I am conscious of in myself, which mine eye has seen, and not another, but all have been fulfilled to me in my bosom. | Я побачу Його сам; мої очі, не очі іншого, побачать Його. Тане серце моє в грудях моїх! |
|

|
| But if ye shall also say, What shall we say before him, and so find the root of the matter in him? | Вам належало б сказати: навіщо ми переслідуємо його? Начебто корінь зла знайшли в мені. |
|

|
| Do ye also beware of deceit: for wrath will come upon transgressors; and then shall they know where their substance is. | Побійтесь меча, тому що меч є месником за неправди, і знайте, що є суд. |

Chapter 20

| Then Sophar the Minæan answered and said, | І відповів Софар наамитянин і сказав: |

|
| I did not suppose that thou wouldest answer thus: neither do ye understand more than I. | розмірковування мої спонукують мене відповідати, і я поспішаю висловити їх. |
|

|
3
|
| I will hear my shameful reproach; and the spirit of my understanding answers me. | Докір, ганебний для мене, вислухав я, і дух розуміння мого відповість за мене. |
|

|

|
| Hast thou not known these things of old, from the time that man was set upon the earth? | Хіба не знаєш ти, що від віку, — з того часу, як поставлена людина на землі, — |
|

|

|
| But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall, and the joy of transgressors is destruction: | веселощі беззаконних короткочасні, і радість лицеміра миттєва? |
|

|
6
|
| although his gifts should go up to heaven, and his sacrifice reach the clouds. | Хоч би зросла до небес велич його, і голова його торкалася хмар, — |
|
7
|
7
|
| For when he shall seem to be now established, then he shall utterly perish: and they that knew him shall say, Where is he? | як гній його, навіки пропадає він; ті, що бачили його, скажуть: де він? |
|
8
|
8
|
| Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; and he has fled like a vision of the night. | Як сон, відлетить, і не знайдуть його; і, як нічне видіння, зникне. |
|
9
|

|
| The eye has looked upon him, but shall not see him again; and his place shall no longer perceive him. | Око, що бачило його, більше не побачить його, і вже не дивитиметься на нього місце його. |
|

|
| Let his inferiors destroy his children, and let his hands kindle the fire of sorrow. | Сини його будуть запобігати перед жебраками, і руки його повернуть вкрадене ним. |
|

|
11
|
| His bones have been filled with vigour of his youth, and it shall lie down with him in the dust. | Кістки його наповнені гріхами юности його, і з ним ляжуть вони у порох. |
|

|
| Though evil be sweet in his mouth, though he will hide it under his tongue; | Якщо солодке в роті його зло, і він таїть його під язиком своїм, |
|

|
| though he will not spare it, and will not leave it, but will keep it in the midst of his throat: | береже і не кидає його, а тримає його у вустах своїх, |
|
14
|
14
|
| yet he shall not at all be able to help himself; the gall of an asp is in his belly. | то ця їжа його в утробі його перетвориться на жовч аспидів усередині його. |
|
15
|
15
|
| His wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up; a messenger of wrath shall drag him out of his house. | Майно, яке він ковтав, виблює: Бог вивергне його із утроби його. |

| And let him suck the poison of serpents, and let the serpent's tongue slay him. | Зміїну отруту він ссе; умертвить його язик єхидни. |

|
| Let him not see the milk of the pastures, nor the supplies of honey and butter. | Не бачити йому струмків, рік, що течуть медом і молоком! |
|
18
|
18
|
| He has laboured unprofitably and in vain, for wealth of which he shall not taste: it is as a lean thing, unfit for food, which he cannot swallow. | Нажите трудом поверне, не проковтне; за міркою майна його буде і розплата його, а він не порадіє. |
|
19
|
19
|
| For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men: and he has plundered an habitation, though he built it not. | Бо він гнітив, відсилав бідних; захоплював доми, яких не будував; |
|
20
|
20
|
| There is no security to his possessions; he shall not be saved by his desire. | не знав ситости в утробі своїй і у жадобі своїй не щадив нічого. |
|
21
|
21
|
| There is nothing remaining of his provisions; therefore his goods shall not flourish. | Нічого не спаслося від обжерливости його, зате не встоїть щастя його. |
|
22
|
22
|
| But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened; and all distress shall come upon him. | У повноті достатку буде тісно йому; всяка рука скривдженого підніметься на нього. |
|
23
|
23
|
| If by any means he would fill his belly, let God send upon him the fury of wrath; let him bring a torrent of pains upon him. | Коли буде чим наповнити утробу його, Він пошле на нього лють гніву Свого й буде дощити на нього хвороби в плоті його. |
|

|
| And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; let the brazen bow wound him. | Чи втече він від зброї залізної, — проколе його лук мідний; |
|
25
|
25
|
| And let the arrow pierce through his body; and let the stars be against his dwelling-place: let terrors come upon him. | стане виймати стрілу, — і вона вийде з тіла, вийде, блискаючи крізь жовч його; жахи смерти найдуть на нього! |
|

|
| And let all darkness wait for him: a fire that burns not out shall consume him; and let a stranger plague his house. | Все похмуре сховано всередині його; буде пожирати його вогонь, який ніхто не роздмухує; зло осягне і те, що залишилося в наметі його. |
|

|
| And let the heaven reveal his iniquities, and the earth rise up against him. | Небо відкриє беззаконня його, і земля повстане проти нього. |
|
28
|
28
|
| Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him. | Зникне надбання дому його; усе розпливеться в день гніву Його. |
|
29
|
29
|
| This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of his goods appointed him by the all-seeing God. | Ось доля людини беззаконної і спадщина, визначена їй Вседержителем! |

Chapter 21

|
| But Job answered and said, | І відповів Іов і сказав; |
|

|
| Hear ye, hear ye my words, that I may not have this consolation from you. | вислухайте уважно слова мої, і це буде мені утіхою від вас. |
|

|

|
| Raise me, and I will speak; then ye shall not laugh me to scorn. | Потерпіть мене, і я буду говорити; а після того, як скажу, насміхайтеся. |
|

|
| What! is my reproof of man? and why should I not be angry? | Хіба до людини слова мої? як же мені і не бути слабкодухим? |
|

|

|
| Look upon me, and wonder, laying your hand upon your cheek. | Подивіться на мене і вжахніться, і покладіть перст на вуста. |
|

|

|
| For even when I remember, I am alarmed, and pains seize my flesh. | Лише тільки я згадаю, — здригаюсь, і тремтіння обіймає тіло моє. |
|

|
| Wherefore do the ungodly live, and grow old even in wealth? | Чому беззаконні живуть, досягають старости, та й силою міцні? |
|

|
| Their seed is according to their desire, and their children are in their sight. | Діти їхні з ними перед лицем їх, і онуки їхні перед очима їх. |
|

|
| Their houses are prosperous, neither have they any where cause for fear, neither is there a scourge from the Lord upon them. | Доми їхні безпечні від страху, і немає жезла Божого на них. |
|
10
|

|
| Their cow does not cast her calf, and their beast with young is safe, and does not miscarry. | Віл їх запліднює і не вивергає, корова їх зачинає і не викидає. |
|

|

|
| And they remain as an unfailing flock, and their children play before them, taking up the psaltery and harp; | Як стадо, випускають вони малюків своїх, і діти їхні стрибають. |
|

|
| and they rejoice at the voice of a song. | Викликують під голос тимпана і цитри і веселяться при звуках сопілки; |
|

|

|
| And they spend their days in wealth, and fall asleep in the rest of the grave. | проводять дні свої у щасті і миттєво сходять у пекло. |
|

|

|
| Yet such a man says to the Lord, Depart from me; I desire not to know thy ways. | А між тим вони говорять Богу: відійди від нас, ми не хочемо знати шляхів Твоїх! |
|
15
|
15
|
| What is the Mighty One, that we should serve him? and what profit is there that we should approach him? | Хто такий Вседержитель, щоб нам служити Йому? і яка користь прибігати до Нього? |
|
16
|
16
|
| For their good things were in their hands, but he regards not the works of the ungodly. | Бачиш, щастя їх не від їхніх рук. — Рада нечестивих, будь далекою від мене! |
|
17
|
17
|
| Nevertheless, the lamp of the ungodly also shall be put out, and destruction shall come upon them, and pangs of vengeance shall seize them. | Чи часто гасне світильник у беззаконних, і находить на них лихо, і Він дає їм у наділ страждання у гніві Своєму? |
|
18
|
18
|
| And they shall be as chaff before the wind, or as dust which the storm has taken up. | Вони повинні бути, як соломинка перед вітром і як полова, яку розносить вихор. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Let his substance fail to supply his children: God shall recompense him, and he shall know it. | Скажеш: Бог береже для дітей його нещастя його. — Нехай віддасть Він йому самому, щоб він це знав. |
|
20
|

|
| Let his eyes see his own destruction, and let him not be saved by the Lord. | Нехай його очі побачать нещастя його, і нехай він сам п’є від гніву Вседержителевого. |
|
21
|

|
| For his desire is in his house with him, and the number of his months has been suddenly cut off. | Бо яка йому турбота про дім свій після нього, коли число місяців його закінчиться? |
|
22
|

|
| Is it not the Lord who teaches understanding and knowledge? and does not he judge murders? | Але чи Бога вчити мудрости, коли Він судить і небесних? |
|

|
| One shall die in his perfect strength, and wholly at ease and prosperous; | Один помирає в самій повноті сил своїх, зовсім спокійний і мирний; |
|

|

|
| and his inwards are full of fat, and his marrow is diffused throughout him. | нутрощі його повні жиру, і кістки його напоєні мозком. |
|

|
| And another dies in bitterness of soul, not eating any good thing. | А інший помирає з душею засмученою, не вкусивши добра. |
|

|
| But they lie down in the earth together, and corruption covers them. | І вони разом будуть лежати в поросі, і черва покриє їх. |
|
27

27
|
| So I know you, that ye presumptuously attack me: | Знаю я ваші думки і хитрощі, які ви проти мене сплітаєте. |
|
28
|
28
|
| so that ye will say, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the covering of the tabernacles of the ungodly? | Ви скажете: де дім князя, і де намет, у якому жили беззаконні? |
|
29

|
| Ask those that go by the way, and do not disown their tokens. | Хіба ви не запитували у подорожніх і незнайомі з їх спостереженнями, |

|
| For the wicked hastens to the day of destruction: they shall be led away for the day of his vengeance. | що у день загибелі пощаджений буває лиходій, у день гніву відводиться убік? |

|

| Is not thy wickedness abundant, and thy sins innumerable? | Певно, злоба твоя велика, і беззаконням твоїм немає кінця. |

| So the Almighty shall be thy helper from enemies, and he shall bring thee forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire. | І буде Вседержитель твоїм золотом і блискучим сріблом у тебе, |

| Then shalt thou have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven. | бо тоді будеш радуватися за Вседержителя і піднімеш до Бога лице твоє. |

| And he shall hear thee when thou prayest to him, and he shall grant thee power to pay thy vows. | Помолишся Йому, і Він почує тебе, і ти виконаєш обітниці твої. |

| while the ungodly have passed over the bound, carrying off the flock with the shepherd? | Межі пересувають, викрадають стада і пасуть у себе. |

| They have led away the ass of the fatherless, and taken the widow's ox for a pledge. | У сиріт відбирають осла, у вдови беруть у заставу вола; |

| They have turned aside the weak from the right way: and the meek of the earth have hidden themselves together. | бідних зіштовхують з дороги, всі принижені землі примушені ховатися. |

| But having known their works, he delivered them into darkness: and in the night one will be as a thief: | Зі світанком встає вбивця, умертвляє бідного й убогого, а вночі буває злодієм. |

| To whom hast thou given counsel? is it not to him who has all wisdom? whom wilt thou follow? is it not one who has the greatest power? | Яку пораду подав ти немудрому і як у всій повноті пояснив справу! |

| As God lives, who has thus judged me; and the Almighty, who has embittered my soul; | живий Бог, Який позбавив мене суду, і Вседержитель, Який засмутив душу мою, |

| verily, while my breath is yet in me, and the breath of God which remains to me is in my nostrils, | бо, доки ще дихання моє в мені і дух Божий у ніздрях моїх, |

|
| my lips shall not speak evil words, neither shall my soul meditate unrighteous thoughts. | не скажуть вуста мої неправди, і язик мій не вимовить лжі! |

|
| Far be it from me that I should justify you till I die; for I will not let go my innocence, | Далекий я від того, щоб визнати вас справедливими; доки не помру, не уступлю непорочности моєї. |

| but keeping fast to my righteousness I will by no means let it go: for I am not conscious to myself of having done any thing amiss. | Міцно тримав я правду мою і не відпущу її; не докорить мені серце моє в усі дні мої. |

| Behold, ye all know that ye are adding vanity to vanity. | Ось, усі ви і самі бачили; і для чого ви стільки пустословите? |

| This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of oppressors shall come upon them from the Almighty. | Ось доля беззаконній людині від Бога, і спадщина, яку одержують від Вседержителя гнобителі. |

| But whence has wisdom been discovered? and what is the place of knowledge? | Але де премудрість знаходиться? і де місце розуму? |

| Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance given of the Mighty One from the highest? | Яка ж доля мені від Бога з висоти? І яка спадщина від Вседержителя з небес? |

|
| Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity. | Чи не для нечестивого загибель, і чи не для того, хто робить зло, напасть? |
|

|
| Will he not see my way, and number all my steps? | Чи не бачив Він шляхів моїх, і чи не рахував усіх моїх кроків? |
|

|
| But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit: | Якщо я ходив у суєті, і якщо нога моя поспішала на лукавство; — |

| If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors; | Якщо серце моє захоплювалося жінкою і я чинив підступи біля дверей мого ближнього, — |

| then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low. | нехай моя дружина меле на іншого, і нехай інші знущаються з неї, |

| For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man's wife. | тому що це — злочин, це — беззаконня, що підлягає суду; |
|

|
| For it is a fire burning on every side, and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys. | це — вогонь, який з’їдає до знищення, який викорінив би все добро моє. |

| And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or my handmaid, when they pleaded with me; | Якщо я зневажав права слуги і служниці моєї, коли вони мали суперечку зі мною, |

| Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb. | Чи не Він, Який створив мене в утробі, створив і його й однаково утворив нас в утробі? |

| But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail. | Чи відмовляв я нужденним у їх проханні і чи томив очі вдови? |

| And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan; | Чи один я з’їдав шматок мій, і чи не їв від нього і сирота? |

| (for I nourished them as a father from my youth, and guided them from my mother's womb.) | Бо з дитинства він зростав зі мною, як з батьком, і від утроби матері моєї я піклувався про вдову. |

| And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him; | Якщо я бачив кого, хто гинув без одягу, і бідного без покрова, — |

| and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs; | чи не благословляли мене стегна його, і чи не був він зігрітий вовною овець моїх? |

| For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden. | тому що страшне для мене покарання від Бога: перед величчю Його не устояв би я. |

| If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone; | Чи покладав я на золоті опору мою і чи говорив скарбу: ти — надія моя? |
|

|
| and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable treasures: | Чи радів я, що багатство моє було великим, і коли рука моя придбала багато? |
|

|
| (do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not power to continue:) | Дивлячись на сонце, як воно сяє, і на місяць, як він велично прямує, |

| and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it: | чи спокусився я в таїні серця мого, і чи цілували вуста мої руку мою? |

| for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:) | Подорожній не ночував на вулиці; двері мої я відчиняв перехожому. |

| (for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom: | то я боявся б великої громади, і презирство одноплемінників страшило б мене, і я мовчав би і не виходив би за двері. |

| but there is a spirit in mortals; and the inspiration of the Almighty is that which teaches. | Але дух у людині і подих Вседержителя дає їй розуміння. |

| The long-lived are not wise as such; neither do the aged know judgment. | Не багаторічні тільки мудрі, і не старі розуміють правду. |
|

|
| Wherefore I said, Hear me, and I will tell you what I know. | Тому я говорю: вислухайте мене, оголошу вам мою думку і я. |

| Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is for ever just. | Чи може ненависник правди володарювати? І чи можеш ти звинуватити Всеправедного? |

| He is ungodly that says to a king, Thou art a transgressor, that says to princes, O most ungodly one. | Чи можна сказати цареві: ти — нечестивець, і князям: ви — беззаконники? |

| What is this that thou thinkest to be according to right? who art thou that thou hast said, I am righteous before the Lord? | вважаєш ти справедливим, що сказав: я правіший за Бога? |

| I will answer thee, and thy three friends. | Я відповім тобі і твоїм друзям з тобою: |
|

|

|
| Look up to the sky and see; and consider the clouds, how high they are above thee. | поглянь на небо і дивися; поглянь на хмари, вони вище тебе. |

|
| If thou hast sinned, what wilt thou do? and if too thou hast transgressed much, what canst thou perform? | Якщо ти грішиш, що робиш ти Йому? і якщо злочини твої збільшуються, що заподіюєш ти Йому? |

| They that are oppressed of a multitude will be ready to cry out; they will call for help because of the arm of many. | Від безлічі гнобителів стогнуть гноблені, і від руки сильних волають. |

| But know that the Lord will not cast off an innocent man: being mighty in strength of wisdom, | Ось, Бог могутній і не нехтує сильним міцністю серця; |

| And the hypocrites in heart will array wrath against themselves; they will not cry, because he has bound them. | Але лицеміри живлять у серці гнів і не взивають до Нього, коли Він заковує їх у кайдани; |

| Therefore let their soul die in youth, and their life be wounded by messengers of death. | тому душа їх помирає у молодості і життя їх із блудниками. |

| there is a deep gulf and a rushing stream beneath it, and thy table came down full of fatness. Judgment shall not fail from the righteous; | але ти сповнений судженнями нечестивих: судження й осудження — близькі. |

| but there shall be wrath upon the ungodly, by reason of the ungodliness of the bribes which they received for iniquities. | Нехай не вразить тебе гнів Божий покаранням! Великий викуп не спасе тебе. |

|
| Let not thy mind willingly turn thee aside from the petition of the feeble that are in distress. | Чи дасть Він яку ціну твоєму багатству? Ні, — ні золоту і ніякому скарбу. |

| And draw not forth all the mighty men by night, so that the people should go up instead of them. | Не бажай тієї ночі, коли народи знищуються на своєму місці. |

| After him shall be a cry with a loud voice; he shall thunder with the voice of his excellency, yet he shall not cause men to pass away, for one shall hear his voice. | За ним гримить голос; гримить Він гласом величі Своєї і не зупиняє його, коли голос Його почутий. |

| The Mighty One shall thunder wonderfully with his voice: for he has done great things which we knew not; | Дивно гримить Бог гласом Своїм, робить діла великі, для нас незбагненні. |

| commanding the snow, Be thou upon the earth, and the stormy rain, and the storm of the showers of his might. | Бо снігу Він говорить: будь на землі; однаково дрібний дощ і великий дощ у Його владі. |

| Where wast thou when I founded the earth? tell me now, if thou hast knowledge, | де був ти, коли Я заклав основи землі? Скажи, якщо знаєш. |

| who set the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it? | Хто поклав міру її, якщо знаєш? або хто протягував по ній шнур? |
|

| On what are its rings fastened? and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it? | На чому затверджені основи її, або хто поклав наріжний камінь її, |

| And I said to it, Hitherto shalt thou come, but thou shalt not go beyond, but thy waves shall be confined within thee. | і сказав: сюди дійдеш і не перейдеш, і тут межа гордовитим хвилям твоїм? |

| Or did I order the morning light in thy time; and did the morning star then first see his appointed place; | Чи давав ти коли в житті своєму накази ранку і чи вказував зорі місце її, |
|

| to lay hold of the extremities of the earth, to cast out the ungodly out of it? | щоб вона охопила краї землі і струсила з неї нечестивих, |
|

|

|
| Or didst thou take clay of the ground, and form a living creature, and set it with the power of speech upon the earth? | щоб земля змінилася, як глина під печаткою, і стала, як різнобарвний одяг, |
|

|

|
| And hast thou removed light from the ungodly, and crushed the arm of the proud? | щоб відібралося у нечестивих світло їх і зухвала рука їх скрушилася? |

| Or hast thou gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep? | Чи сходив ти у глибину моря і чи входив у дослідження безодні? |

| And do the gates of death open to thee for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw thee? | Чи відчинялися для тебе врата смерти, і чи бачив ти врата тіні смертної? |

| And hast thou been instructed in the breadth of the whole earth under heaven? tell me now, what is the extent of it? | Чи оглянув ти широту землі? Поясни, якщо знаєш усе це. |

| And in what kind of a land does the light dwell? and of what kind is the place of darkness? | Де путь до оселі світла, і де місце темряви? |
|

| If thou couldest bring me to their utmost boundaries, and if also thou knowest their paths; | Ти, звичайно, доходив до меж її і знаєш дорогу до дому її. |
|

|

| to rain upon the land where there is no man, the wilderness, where there is not a man in it; so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited land, | щоб ішов дощ на землю безлюдну, на пустелю, де немає людини, |

| and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs? | щоб насичувати пустелю і степ і пробуджувати трав’яні зародки до зростання? |

| Who is the rain's father? and who has generated the drops of dew? | Чи є у дощу батько? або хто народжує краплі роси? |

| And wilt thou send lightnings, and they shall go? and shall they say to thee, What is thy pleasure? | Чи можеш посилати блискавки, і чи підуть вони і чи скажуть тобі: ось ми? |

| And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery? | Хто вклав мудрість у серце, або хто дав сенс розуму? |

| And who is he that numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven down to the earth? | Хто може обчислити хмари своєю мудрістю й утримати сосуди неба, |

| and if thou hast numbered the full months of their being with young, and if thou hast relieved their pangs: | чи можеш обчислити місяці вагітности їх? і чи знаєш час пологів їх? |

| and hast reared their young without fear; and wilt thou loosen their pangs? | Вони вигинаються, народжуючи дітей своїх, викидаючи свої ноші; |

| Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and will not return to them. | діти їх приходять у силу, ростуть на полі, йдуть і не повертаються до них. |

| He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer. | Він насміхається над міською багатолюдністю і не чує криків погонича, |

| He will survey the mountains as his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing. | по горах шукає собі їжу і ганяється за всякою зеленню. |

| And will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or to lie down at thy manger? | Чи захоче єдиноріг служити тобі і чи переночує біля ясел твоїх? |

| And wilt thou bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for thee in the plain? | Чи можеш мотузкою прив’язати єдинорога до борозни, і чи стане він боронити за тобою поле? |

| And dost thou trust him, because his strength is great? and wilt thou commit thy works to him? | Чи будеш надіятися на нього, тому що в нього сила велика, і чи даси йому роботу твою? |

| And wilt thou believe that he will return to thee thy seed, and bring it in to thy threshing-floor? | Чи повіриш йому, що він насіння твоє поверне і складе на тік твій? |

| The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice, | Чи ти дав красиві крила павичу і пера і пух страусу? |

| for the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust, | Він залишає яйця свої на землі, і на піску зігріває їх, |

| and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them. | і забуває, що нога може роздавити їх і польовий звір може розтоптати їх; |

| She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear. | він жорстокий до дітей своїх, немов не до своїх, і не боїться, що праця його буде даремна; |

| For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding. | тому що Бог не дав йому мудрости і не наділив його глуздом; |

| In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider. | а коли підніметься на висоту, посміється з коня і вершника його. |

| Hast thou invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror? | Чи ти дав коню силу і наділив шию його гривою? |
|

| And hast thou clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage? | Чи можеш ти злякати його, як сарану? Хропіння ніздрів його — жах; |
|

|
| He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain. | риє ногою землю і захоплюється силою; йде назустріч зброї; |
|

|
| He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword. | він глузує з небезпеки і не боїться і не відвертається від меча; |
|

| The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground: | сагайдак гуркотить над ним, блискотить спис і дротик; |

|
| and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds. | у пориві і люті він ковтає землю і не може стояти при звуці труби; |

|
| And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing. | при трубному звуці він подає голос: гу! гу! і здалеку чує битву, гучні голоси вождів і крик. |

| And does the hawk remain steady by thy wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south? | Чи твоєю мудрістю літає яструб і спрямовує крила свої на південь? |

|
| And does the eagle rise at thy command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest, | Чи за твоїм словом піднімається орел і влаштовує на висоті гніздо своє? |
|

| on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place? | Він живе на скелі і ночує на зубцях скелі і на місцях неприступних; |
|

|
| Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far. | звідти видивляється собі їжу: очі його дивляться далеко; |

|
| And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcases may be, immediately they are found. | пташенята його п’ють кров, і де труп, там і він. |

| And the Lord God answered Job, and said, | І відповів Господь Іову з бурі і сказав: |

| Will any one pervert judgment with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer. | опережи, як муж, стегна твої: Я буду запитувати тебе, а ти пояснюй Мені. |

| And Job answered and said to the Lord, | Ти хочеш відкинути суд Мій, звинуватити Мене, щоб виправдати себе? |
|

|
| Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these arguments? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. | Чи така в тебе сила, як у Бога? І чи можеш загриміти голосом, як Він? |
|

|
| I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time. | Прикрась же себе величчю і славою, одягнись у блиск і красу; |
|

|
| And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, saying, | вилий лють гніву твого, подивися на все горде і смири його; |
|

|
| Nay, gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me. | глянь на всіх зарозумілих і принизь їх, і скруши нечестивих на місцях їх; |
|

|
| Do not set aside my judgment: and dost thou think that I have dealt with thee in any other way, than that thou mightest appear to be righteous? | зарий усіх їх у землю й лиця їх покрий темрявою. |
|

|
| Hast thou an arm like the Lord's? or dost thou thunder with a voice like his? | Тоді і Я визнаю, що правиця твоя може спасати тебе. |
|
10
|
10
|
| Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe thyself with glory and honour. | Ось бегемот, якого Я створив, як і тебе; він їсть траву, як віл; |
|
11
|
11
|
| And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one. | ось, його сила в стегнах його і міцність його у м’язах черева його; |
|
12

|
| Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly. | повертає хвостом своїм, як кедром; жили ж на стегнах його переплетені; |
|

|
| And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame. | ноги в нього, як мідні труби; кістки в нього, як залізні прути; |
|

|
| Then will I confess that thy right hand can save thee. | це — верх шляхів Божих; тільки Той, Хто створив його, може наблизити до нього меч Свій; |
|

|
| But now look at the wild beasts with thee; they eat grass like oxen. | гори приносять йому їжу, і там усі звірі польові грають; |
|

|
| Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. | він лягає під тінистими деревами, під дахом очерету й у болотах; |
|

|
| He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together. | тінисті дерева покривають його своєю тінню; верби при струмках оточують його; |
|

|
| His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is as cast iron. | ось, він п’є з ріки і не поспішає; залишається спокійним, хоч би Йордан побіг до рота його. |
|

|
| This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels. | Чи візьме хто його на очах його і чи проколе йому ніс багром? |
|

|
| And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep. | Чи можеш ти вудкою витягти левиафана і мотузкою схопити за язик його? |
|

|
| He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush. | чи вдінеш кільце в ніздрі його? чи проколеш голкою щелепу його? |
|

|
| And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and so do the bushes of the field. | чи буде він довго благати тебе і чи буде говорити з тобою лагідно? |

| If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trusts that Jordan will rush up into his mouth. | чи укладе він договір з тобою, і чи візьмеш його назавжди собі за раба? |

|
| Yet one shall take him in his sight; one shall catch him with a cord, and pierce his nose. | чи станеш забавлятися ним, як пташкою, і чи зв’яжеш його для дівчаток твоїх? |

| But wilt thou catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose? | чи будуть продавати його товариші ловитви, чи розділять його між хананейськими купцями? |

| Or wilt thou fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp? | чи можеш простромити шкіру його списом і голову його рибальською острогою? |

| Will he address thee with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant? | Клади на нього руку твою, і пам’ятай про ту боротьбу: більше не будеш. |

| And will he make a covenant with thee? and wilt thou take him for a perpetual servant? | |

|
| And wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or bind him as a sparrow for a child? | |

|
| And do the nations feed upon him, and the nations of the Phœnicians share him? | |
|
31
|
|
| And all the ships come together would not be able to bear the mere skin of his tail; neither shall they carry his head in fishing-vessels. | |
|
32
|
|
| But thou shalt lay thy hand upon him once, remembering the war that is waged by his mouth; and let it not be done any more. | |
|
Chapter 41

| Hast thou not seen him? and hast thou not wondered at the things said of him? | Надія марна: чи не впадеш від одного погляду його? |

| Dost thou not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me? | Немає настільки відважного, який насмілився б потурбувати його; хто ж може устояти перед Моїм лицем? |

| Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole world under heaven is mine? | Хто випередив Мене, щоб Мені винагородити його? під усім небом усе Моє. |

| I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power one shall pity his antagonist. | Не промовчу про члени його, про силу і красиву пропорційність їх. |

| Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breast-plate? | то може відкрити верх одягу його, хто підійде до подвійних щелеп його? |

| Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth. | Хто може відчинити двері лиця його? коло зубів його — жах; |

| His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his skin as a smyrite stone. | міцні щити його — краса; вони скріплені ніби твердою печаткою; |

|
| One part cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them. | один іншого торкається близько, так що і повітря не проходить між ними; |

| They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated. | один з іншим лежать щільно, зчепилися і не розсуваються. |

| At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are as the appearance of the morning star. | Від його чхання показується світло; очі в нього, як вії зорі; |

| Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad. | з пащі його виходять пломені, вискакують вогненні іскри; |

| Out of his nostrils proceeds smoke of a furnace burning with fire of coals. | з ніздрів його виходить дим, як з киплячого горщика або казана. |

|
| His breath is as live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth. | Подих його розжарює вугілля, і з пащі його виходить полум’я. |

|
| And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs. | На шиї його живе сила, і перед ним біжить жах. |

|
| The flesh also of his body is joined together: if one pours violence upon him, he shall not be moved. | М’ясисті частини тіла його з’єднані між собою твердо, не здригнуться. |

|
| His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil. | Серце його тверде, як камінь, і жорстке, як нижнє жорно. |

| And when he turns, he is a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth. | Коли він піднімається, силачі в страху, зовсім губляться від жаху. |

|
| If spears should come against him, men will effect nothing, either with the spear or the breast-plate. | Меч, що доторкнеться до нього, не встоїть, ні спис, ні дротик, ні лати. |

|
| For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood. | Залізо він вважає за солому, мідь — за гниле дерево. |
|

|
| The bow of brass shall not wound him, he deems a slinger as grass. | Дочка (стріла) лука не змусить його тікати; а камені із пращі для нього полова. |
|

|
| Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand. | Булава вважається у нього за соломину; зі свисту дротика він сміється. |
|

|

|
| His lair is formed of sharp points; and all the gold of the sea under him is as an immense quantity of clay. | Під ним гострі камені, і він на гострих каменях лежить у бруді. |
|

|
| He makes the deep boil like a brazen caldron; and he regards the sea as a pot of ointment, | Він кип’ятить безодню, як казан, і море перетворює на киплячу мазь; |

| and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as his range. | залишає за собою світлу стежку; безодня здається сивиною. |

| There is nothing upon the earth like to him, formed to be sported with by my angels. | Немає на землі подібного до нього; він створений безстрашним; |

| I know that thou canst do all things, and nothing is impossible with thee. | знаю, що Ти все можеш, і що намір Твій не може бути зупинений. |

| For who is he that hides counsel from thee? or who keeps back his words, and thinks to hide them from thee? and who will tell me what I knew not, great and wonderful things which I understood not? | Хто цей, що потьмарює Провидіння, нічого не розуміючи? — Так, я говорив про те, чого не розумів, про діла дивні для мене, яких я не знав. |

| But hear me, O Lord, that I also may speak: and I will ask thee, and do thou teach me. | Вислухай, взивав я, і я буду говорити, і що буду запитувати в Тебе, поясни мені. |

| And it came to pass after the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Thæmanite, Thou hast sinned, and thy two friends: for ye have not said anything true before me, as my servant Job has. | І було після того, як Господь сказав слова ті Іову, сказав Господь Елифазу феманитянину: горить гнів Мій на тебе і на двох друзів твоїх за те, що ви говорили про Мене не так вірно, як раб Мій Іов. |

| Now then take seven bullocks, and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and he shall offer a burnt-offering for you. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will only accept him: for but for his sake, I would have destroyed you, for ye have not spoken the truth against my servant Job. | Отже, візьміть собі сім тельців і сім баранів і підіть до раба Мого Іова і принесіть за себе жертву; і раб Мій Іов помолиться за вас, тому що тільки лице його Я прийму, щоб не відкинути вас за те, що ви говорили про Мене не так вірно, як раб Мій Іов. |

| So Eliphaz the Thæmanite, and Baldad the Sauchite, and Sophar the Minæan, went and did as the Lord commanded them: and he pardoned their sin for the sake of Job. | І пішли Елифаз феманитянин і Вилдад савхеянин і Софар наамитянин, і зробили так, як Господь повелів їм, — і Господь прийняв лице Іова. |

| And the Lord prospered Job: and when he prayed also for his friends, he forgave them their sin: and the Lord gave Job twice as much, even the double of what he had before. | І повернув Господь втрату Іова, коли він помолився за друзів своїх; і дав Господь Іову вдвічі більше того, що він мав раніше. |

| And all his brethren and his sisters heard all that had happened to him, and they came to him, and so did all that had known him from the first: and they ate and drank with him, and comforted him, and wondered at all that the Lord had brought upon him: and each one gave him a lamb, and four drachms' weight of gold, even of unstamped gold. | Тоді прийшли до нього всі брати його й усі сестри його і всі колишні знайомі його, і їли з ним хліб у домі його, і тужили з ним, і утішали його за все зло, яке Господь навів на нього, і дали йому кожен по кеситі і по золотому кільцю. |

| And the Lord blessed the latter end of Job, more than the beginning: and his cattle were fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, a thousand she-asses of the pastures. | І благословив Бог останні дні Іова більше, ніж минулі: у нього було чотирнадцять тисяч дрібної худоби, шість тисяч верблюдів, тисяча пар волів і тисяча ослиць. |
