Глава 1	Chapter 1

Був чоловік у землі Уц, ім’я його Іов; і був чоловік цей непорочний, справедливий і богобоязкий і віддалявся від зла.	There was a certain man in the land of Ausis, whose name was Job; and that man was true, blameless, righteous, and godly, abstaining from everything evil.

І народилися у нього сім синів і три дочки.	And he had seven sons and three daughters.

Майна у нього було: сім тисяч дрібної худоби, три тисячі верблюдів, п’ятсот пар волів і п’ятсот ослиць і дуже багато прислуги; і був чоловік цей знаменитіший за всіх синів Сходу.	And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses in the pastures, and a very great household, and he had a great husbandry on the earth; and that man was most noble of the men of the east.

Сини його сходилися, робили бенкети кожен у своєму домі у свій день, і посилали і запрошували трьох сестер своїх їсти і пити з ними.	And his sons visiting one another prepared a banquet every day, taking with them also their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Коли коло бенкетних днів звершувалося, Іов посилав за ними й освячував їх і, встаючи рано-вранці, підносив всепалення за числом усіх їх [і одного тельця за гріх про душі їхні]. Бо говорив Іов: може, сини мої згрішили і похулили Бога в серці своєму. Так робив Іов в усі такі дні.	And when the days of the banquet were completed, Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning, and offered sacrifices for them, according to their number, and one calf for a sin-offering for their souls: for Job said, Lest peradventure my sons have thought evil in their minds against God. Thus then Job did continually.

І був день, коли прийшли сини Божі стати перед Господом; між ними прийшов і сатана.	And it came to pass on a day, that, behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came with them.

І сказав Господь сатані: звідки ти прийшов? І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: я ходив по землі й обійшов її.	And the Lord said to the devil, Whence art thou come? And the devil answered the Lord, and said, I am come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world.

І сказав Господь сатані: чи звернув ти увагу твою на раба Мого Іова? бо немає такого, як він, на землі: чоловік непорочний, справедливий, богобоязкий і віддаляється від зла.	And the Lord said to him, Hast thou diligently considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a man blameless, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil?

І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: хіба даром богобоязкий Іов?	Then the devil answered, and said before the Lord, Does Job worship the Lord for nothing?

Чи не Ти навколо відгородив його і дім його й усе, що у нього? Діло рук його Ти благословив, і стада його поширюються по землі;	Hast thou not made a hedge about him, and about his household, and all his possessions round about? and hast thou not blessed the works of his hands, and multiplied his cattle upon the land?

але простягни руку Твою і торкнися всього, що у нього, — чи благословить він Тебе?	But put forth thine hand, and touch all that he has: verily he will bless thee to thy face.
12	12
І сказав Господь сатані: ось, усе, що у нього, у руці твоїй; тільки на нього не простягай руки твоєї. І відійшов сатана від лиця Господа.	Then the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I give into thine hand all that he has, but touch not himself. So the devil went out from the presence of the Lord.

І був день, коли сини його і дочки його їли і вино пили в домі первородного брата свого.	And it came to pass on a certain day, that Job's sons and his daughters were drinking wine in the house of their elder brother.

І ось, приходить вісник до Іова і говорить:	And, behold, there came a messenger to Job, and said to him, The yokes of oxen were ploughing, and the she-asses were feeding near them;
15	15
воли орали, й ослиці паслися поряд з ними, як напали савеяни і взяли їх, а слуг уразили вістрям меча; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе.	and the spoilers came and took them for a prey, and slew the servants with the sword; and I having escaped alone am come to tell thee.
16	16
Ще він говорив, як приходить інший і каже: вогонь Божий упав з неба й спалив овець і слуг і пожер їх; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе.	While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, Fire has fallen from heaven, and burnt up the sheep, and devoured the shepherds likewise; and I having escaped alone am come to tell thee.

Ще він говорив, як приходить інший і каже: халдеї розташувалися трьома загонами і кинулися на верблюдів і взяли їх, а слуг уразили вістрям меча; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе.	While he was yet speaking, there came another messenger, and said to Job, The horsemen formed three companies against us, and surrounded the camels, and took them for a prey, and slew the servants with the sword; and I only escaped, and am come to tell thee.

Ще цей говорив, приходить інший і каже: сини твої і дочки твої їли і пили вино у домі первородного брата свого;	While he is yet speaking, another messenger comes, saying to Job, While thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking with their elder brother,

і ось, великий вітер прийшов з пустелі й охопив чотири кути дому, і дім упав на отроків, і вони померли; і врятувався тільки я один, щоб сповістити тебе.	suddenly a great wind came on from the desert, and caught the four corners of the house, and the house fell upon thy children, and they are dead; and I have escaped alone, and am come to tell thee.

Тоді Іов встав і роздер верхній одяг свій, обстриг голову свою й упав на землю і поклонився	So Job arose, and rent his garments, and shaved the hair of his head, and fell on the earth, and worshipped,
21	21
і сказав: нагим я вийшов із утроби матері моєї, нагим і повернуся. Господь дав, Господь і взяв; [як угодно було Господу, так і зробилося;] нехай буде ім’я Господнє благословенне!	and said, I myself came forth naked from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, the Lord has taken away: as it seemed good to the Lord, so has it come to pass; blessed be the name of the Lord.

У всьому цьому не згрішив Іов і не промовив нічого нерозумного про Бога.	In all these events that befel him Job sinned not at all before the Lord, and did not impute folly to God.
Глава 2	Chapter 2

1	1
Був день, коли прийшли сини Божі стати перед Господом; між ними прийшов і сатана стати перед Господом.	And it came to pass on a certain day, that the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came among them to stand before the Lord.
2	2
І сказав Господь сатані: звідки ти прийшов? І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: я ходив по землі й обійшов її.	And the Lord said to the devil, Whence comest thou? Then the devil said before the Lord, I am come from going through the world, and walking about the whole earth.
3	3
І сказав Господь сатані: чи звернув ти увагу твою на раба Мого Іова? бо немає такого, як він, на землі: чоловік непорочний, справедливий, богобоязкий і віддаляється від зла, і досі твердий у своїй непорочності; а ти збуджував Мене проти нього, щоб погубити його невинно.	And the Lord said to the devil, Hast thou then observed my servant Job, that there is none of men upon the earth like him, a harmless, true, blameless, godly man, abstaining from all evil? and he yet cleaves to innocence, whereas thou hast told me to destroy his substance without cause?

І відповів сатана Господу і сказав: шкіру за шкіру, а за життя своє віддасть людина усе, що є у неї;	And the devil answered and said to the Lord, Skin for skin, all that a man has will he give as a ransom for his life.
5	5
але простягни руку Твою і торкнися кістки його і плоті його, — чи благословить він Тебе?	Nay, but put forth thine hand, and touch his bones and his flesh: verily he will bless thee to thy face.
6	6
І сказав Господь сатані: ось, він у руках твоїх, тільки душу його збережи.	And the Lord said to the devil, Behold, I deliver him up to thee; only save his life.
7	7
І відійшов сатана від лиця Господа й уразив Іова проказою лютою від підошви ноги його по саме тім’я його.	So the devil went out from the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils from his feet to his head.
8	8
І взяв він собі черепок, щоб шкребти себе ним, і сів у попіл [поза селищем].	And he took a potsherd to scrape away the discharge, and sat upon a dung-heap outside the city.
9	9
І сказала йому дружина його: ти все ще твердий у непорочності твоїй! похули Бога і помри^*.	And when much time had passed, his wife said to him, How long wilt thou hold out, saying,

Але він сказав їй: ти говориш як одна з безумних: невже добре ми будемо приймати від Бога, а лихого не будемо приймати? В усьому цьому не згрішив Іов вустами своїми.	But he looked on her, and said to her, Thou hast spoken like one of the foolish women. If we have received good things of the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure evil things? In all these things that happened to him, Job sinned not at all with his lips before God.

І почули троє друзів Іова про всі ці біди, які осягли його, і пішли кожен зі свого місця: Елифаз феманитянин, Вилдад савхеянин і Софар наамитянин, і зійшлися, щоб іти разом тужити з ним і втішати його.	Now his three friends having heard of all the evil that was come upon him, came to him each from his own country: Eliphaz the king of the Thæmans, Baldad sovereign of the Saucheans, Sophar king of the Minæans: and they came to him with one accord, to comfort and to visit him.

І, піднявши очі свої здаля, вони не впізнали його; і піднесли голос свій і заридали; і роздер кожен верхній одяг свій, і кидали порох над головами своїми до неба.	And when they saw him from a distance they did not know him; and they cried with a loud voice, and wept, and rent every one his garment, and sprinkled dust upon their heads,

І сиділи з ним на землі сім днів і сім ночей; і ніхто не говорив йому ні слова, тому що бачили, що страждання його дуже великі.	and they sat down beside him seven days and seven nights, and no one of them spoke; for they saw that his affliction was dreadful and very great.
Глава 3	Chapter 3

1	1
Після того відкрив Іов вуста свої і прокляв день свій.	After this Job opened his mouth, and cursed his day,

І почав Іов і сказав:	saying,
3	3
згинь день, у який я народився, і ніч, у яку сказано: зачалася людина!	Let the day perish in which I was born, and that night in which they said, Behold a man-child!
4	4
День той нехай буде темрявою; нехай не шукає його Бог з висоти, і нехай не засяє над ним світло!	Let that night be darkness, and let not the Lord regard it from above, neither let light come upon it.
5	5
Нехай затьмарить його темрява і тінь смертна, нехай обійме його хмара, нехай страшаться його, як палючої спеки!	But let darkness and the shadow of death seize it; let blackness come upon it;
6	6
Ніч та, — нехай володіє нею морок, нехай не рахується вона в днях року, нехай не ввійде у число місяців!	let that day and night be cursed, let darkness carry them away; let it not come into the days of the year, neither let it be numbered with the days of the months.
7	7
О! ніч та — нехай буде вона безлюдна; нехай не ввійде в неї радість!	But let that night be pain, and let not mirth come upon it, nor joy.
8	8
Нехай проклянуть її ті, що проклинають день, здатні розбудити левиафана!	But let him that curses that day curse it, even he that is ready to attack the great whale.
9	9
Нехай померкнуть зірки світанку її: нехай чекає вона світла, і воно не приходить, і нехай не побачить вона вій денниці	Let the stars of that night be darkened; let it remain dark, and not come into light; and let it not see the morning star arise:

за те, що не зачинила дверей утроби матері моєї і не приховала горя від очей моїх!	because it shut not up the gates of my mother's womb, for so it would have removed sorrow from my eyes.
11	11
Чому я не помер, виходячи з утроби, і не помер, коли вийшов з утроби?	For why died I not in the belly? and why did I not come forth from the womb and die immediately?
12	12
Навіщо прийняли мене коліна? навіщо було мені годуватися грудьми?	And why did the knees support me? and why did I suck the breasts?
13	13
Тепер би лежав я і спочивав; спав би, і мені було б спокійно	Now I should have lain down and been quiet, I should have slept and been at rest,

з царями і радниками землі, які забудовували для себе пустелі,	with kings and councillors of the earth, who gloried in their swords;
15	15
або з князями, у яких було золото, і які наповнювали доми свої сріблом;	or with rulers, whose gold was abundant, who filled their houses with silver:

або, як викидень прихований, я не існував би, як немовлята, які не побачили світла.	or I should have been as an untimely birth proceeding from his mother's womb, or as infants who never saw light.

Там беззаконні перестають наводити страх, і там відпочивають виснажені в силі.	There the ungodly have burnt out the fury of rage; there the wearied in body rest.

Там в’язні разом насолоджуються спокоєм і не чують криків приставника.	And the men of old time have together ceased to hear the exactor's voice.
19	19
Малий і великий там рівні, і раб вільний від господаря свого.	The small and great are there, and the servant that feared his lord.
20	20
Навіщо дано страднику світло, і життя засмученим душею,	For why is light given to those who are in bitterness, and life to the souls which are in griefs?
21	21
які чекають на смерть, і немає її, які викопали б її охочіше, ніж скарб,	who desire death, and obtain it not, digging for it as for treasures;
22	22
зраділи б до захвату, захоплювалися б, що знайшли гріб?	and would be very joyful if they should gain it?

Навіщо дано світло людині, путь якої закрита, і яку Бог оточив мороком?	Death is rest to such a man, for God has hedged him in.

Зітхання мої попереджають хліб мій, і стогони мої ллються, як вода,	For my groaning comes before my food, and I weep being beset with terror.

бо жахливе, чого я жахався, те й осягло мене; і чого я боявся, те і прийшло до мене.	For the terror of which I meditated has come upon me, and that which I had feared has befallen me.

Немає мені миру, немає спокою, немає відради: спіткало нещастя.	I was not at peace, nor quiet, nor had I rest; yet wrath came upon me.
Глава 4	Chapter 4

1	1
І відповів Елифаз феманитянин і сказав:	Then Eliphaz the Thæmanite answered and said,

якщо спробуємо ми сказати тобі слово, — чи не тяжко буде тобі? Утім, хто може заборонити слову!	Hast thou been often spoken to in distress? but who shall endure the force of thy words?
3	3
Ось, ти наставляв багатьох і опущені руки підтримував,	For whereas thou hast instructed many, and hast strengthened the hands of the weak one,

того, хто падав, піднімали слова твої, і коліна, що гнулися, ти укріпляв.	and hast supported the failing with words, and hast imparted courage to feeble knees.
5	5
А тепер дійшло до тебе, і ти знеміг; торкнулося тебе, і ти упав духом.	Yet now that pain has come upon thee, and touched thee, thou art troubled.

Богобоязкість твоя чи не повинна бути твоєю надією, і непорочність путів твоїх — упованням твоїм?	Is not thy fear founded in folly, thy hope also, and the mischief of thy way?

Згадай же, чи гинув хто невинний, і де праведних викорінювали?	Remember then who has perished, being pure? or when were the true-hearted utterly destroyed?
8	8
Як я бачив, ті, що орали нечестя і сіяли зло, пожинають його;	Accordingly as I have seen men ploughing barren places, and they that sow them will reap sorrows for themselves.
9	9
від подуву Божого гинуть і від духу гніву Його зникають.	They shall perish by the command of the Lord, and shall be utterly consumed by the breath of his wrath.
10	10
Ревіння лева і голос того, хто рикає, умовкає, і зуби скимнів ламаються;	The strength of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the exulting cry of serpents are quenched.
11	11
могутній лев гине без здобичі, і діти левиці розсіюються.	The old lion has perished for want of food, and the lions' whelps have forsaken one another.
12	12
І ось, до мене таємно прийшло слово, і вухо моє прийняло щось від нього.	But if there had been any truth in thy words, none of these evils would have befallen thee. Shall not mine ear receive excellent revelations from him?
13	13
Серед міркувань про нічні видіння, коли сон находить на людей,	But as when terror falls upon men, with dread and a sound in the night,

обійняв мене жах і трепет і потряс усі кістки мої.	horror and trembling seized me, and caused all my bones greatly to shake.
15	15
І дух пройшов наді мною, дибом стало волосся на мені.	And a spirit came before my face; and my hair and flesh quivered.

Він став, — але я не розпізнав вигляду його, — тільки обрис був перед очима моїми; тихе віяння, — і я чую голос:	I arose and perceived it not: I looked, and there was no form before my eyes: but I only heard a breath and a voice, saying,

чи людина праведніша за Бога? і чи людина чистіша за Творця свого?	What, shall a mortal be pure before the Lord? or a man be blameless in regard to his works?
18	18
Ось, Він і слугам Своїм не довіряє і в ангелах Своїх убачає недоліки:	Whereas he trusts not in his servants, and perceives perverseness in his angels.
19	19
тим більше — в тих, хто живе у храминах із суміші, основа яких порох, які знищуються швидше за міль.	But as for them that dwell in houses of clay, of whom we also are formed of the same clay, he smites them like a moth.
20	20
Між ранком і вечором вони розпадаються; не побачиш, як вони зовсім зникнуть.	And from morning to evening they no longer exist: they have perished, because they cannot help themselves.
21	21
Чи не гинуть з ними і чесноти їхні? Вони вмирають, не досягнувши мудрости.	For he blows upon them, and they are withered: they have perished for lack of wisdom.
Глава 5	Chapter 5

1	1
Взивай, якщо є той, що відповідає тобі. І до кого зі святих звернешся ти?	But call, if any one will hearken to thee, or if thou shalt see any of the holy angels.
2	2
Так, дурня убиває гнівливість, і нерозумного губить роздратування.	For wrath destroys the foolish one, and envy slays him that has gone astray.
3	3
Бачив я, як дурень вкорінюється, і негайно прокляв дім його.	And I have seen foolish ones taking root: but suddenly their habitation was devoured.
4	4
Діти його далекі від щастя, їх будуть бити біля воріт, і не буде захисника.	Let their children be far from safety, and let them be crushed at the doors of vile men, and let there be no deliverer.
5	5
Жниво його з’їсть голодний і з-за терну візьме його, і спраглі поглинуть майно його.	For what they have collected, the just shall eat; but they shall not be delivered out of calamities: let their strength be utterly exhausted.
6	6
Так, не з пороху виходить горе, і не з землі виростає лихо;	For labour cannot by any means come out of the earth, nor shall trouble spring out of the mountains:
7	7
але людина народжується на страждання, як іскри, щоб підніматися вгору.	yet man is born to labour, and even so the vulture's young seek the high places.
8	8
Але я до Бога звернувся б, передав би справу мою Богу,	Nevertheless I will beseech the Lord, and will call upon the Lord, the sovereign of all;
9	9
Який творить діла великі і недослідимі, дивні без міри,	who does great things and untraceable, glorious things also, and marvellous, of which there is no number:
10	10
дає дощ на лице землі і посилає води на лице полів;	who gives rain upon the earth, sending water on the earth:
11	11
принижених поставляє на висоту, і ті, що ремствують, підносяться на спасіння.	who exalts the lowly, and raises up them that are lost:
12	12
Він руйнує задуми підступних, і руки їхні не довершують намірів.	frustrating the counsels of the crafty, and their hands shall not perform the truth:
13	13
Він уловлює мудреців їхнім же лукавством, і рада хитрих стає марною:	who takes the wise in their wisdom, and subverts the counsel of the crafty.
14	14
вдень вони зустрічають темряву й опівдні ходять навпомацки, як уночі.	In the day darkness shall come upon them, and let them grope in the noon-day even as in the night:
15	15
Він спасає бідного від меча, від уст їх і від руки сильного.	and let them perish in war, and let the weak escape from the hand of the mighty.
16	16
І є нещасному надія, і неправда закриває вуста свої.	And let the weak have hope, but the mouth of the unjust be stopped.
17	17
Блаженна людина, яку напоумлює Бог, і тому покарання Вседержителя не відкидай,	But blessed is the man whom the Lord has reproved; and reject not thou the chastening of the Almighty.
18	18
бо Він завдає рани і Сам обв’язує їх; Він уражає, і Його ж руки лікують.	For he causes a man to be in pain, and restores him again: he smites, and his hands heal.
19	19
У шести лихах врятує тебе, і в сьомому не торкнеться тебе зло.	Six times he shall deliver thee out of distresses: and in the seventh harm shall not touch thee.
20	20
Під час голоду визволить тебе від смерти, і на війні — від руки меча.	In famine he shall deliver thee from death: and in war he shall free thee from the power of the sword.
21	21
Від бича язика сховаєш себе і не убоїшся спустошення, коли воно прийде.	He shall hide thee from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not be afraid of coming evils.
22	22
Спустошенню і голоду посмієшся і звірів землі не убоїшся,	Thou shalt laugh at the unrighteous and the lawless: and thou shalt not be afraid of wild beasts.
23	23
бо з каменями польовими у тебе союз, і звірі польові у мирі з тобою.	For the wild beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24	24
І дізнаєшся, що намет твій у безпеці, і будеш дивитися за домом твоїм, і не згрішиш.	Then shalt thou know that thy house shall be at peace, and the provision for thy tabernacle shall not fail.
25	25
І побачиш, що сім’я твоє численне, і паростки твої, як трава на землі.	And thou shalt know that thy seed shall be abundant; and thy children shall be like the herbage of the field.
26	26
Увійдеш у гріб у зрілості, як укладаються снопи пшениці у свій час.	And thou shalt come to the grave like ripe corn reaped in its season, or as a heap of the corn-flour collected in proper time.
27	27
Ось, що ми пізнали; так воно і є; вислухай це і зауваж для себе.	Behold, we have thus sought out these matters; these are what we have heard: but do thou reflect with thyself, if thou hast done anything wrong.
Глава 6	Chapter 6

1	1
І відповів Іов і сказав:	But Job answered and said,

о, якби правильно були зважені волання мої, і разом з ними поклали на терези страждання моє!	Oh that one would indeed weigh the wrath that is upon me, and take up my griefs in a balance together!
3	3
Воно, напевно, перетягнуло б пісок морів! Від того слова мої несамовиті.	And verily they would be heavier than the sand by the seashore: but, as it seems, my words are vain.
4	4
Бо стріли Вседержителя у мені; отрута їх п’є дух мій; жахи Божі ополчилися проти мене.	For the arrows of the Lord are in my body, whose violence drinks up my blood: whenever I am going to speak, they pierce me.
5	5
Чи реве дикий осел на траві? чи мичить бик біля місива свого?	What then? will the wild ass bray for nothing, if he is not seeking food? or again, will the ox low at the manger, when he has fodder?

Чи їдять несмачне без соли, і чи є смак в яєчному білку?	Shall bread be eaten without salt? or again, is there taste in empty words?

До чого не хотіла торкнутися душа моя, те складає огидну їжу мою.	For my wrath cannot cease; for I perceive my food as the smell of a lion to be loathsome.
8	8
О, коли б збулося бажання моє й уповання моє виконав Бог!	For oh that he would grant my desire, and my petition might come, and the Lord would grant my hope!
9	9
О, якби благоволив Бог розтрощити мене, простяг руку Свою й уразив мене!	Let the Lord begin and wound me, but let him not utterly destroy me.
10	10
Це було б ще відрадою мені, і я кріпився б у моїй нещадній хворобі, бо я не відмовився від слів Святого.	Let the grave be my city, upon the walls of which I have leaped: I will not shrink from it; for I have not denied the holy words of my God.
11	11
Що за сила у мене, щоб мати надію мені? і який кінець, щоб продовжити мені життя моє?	For what is my strength, that I continue? what is my time, that my soul endures?
12	12
Чи твердість каменів — твердість моя? і чи мідь — плоть моя?	Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of brass?
13	13
Чи є в мені допомога для мене, і чи є для мене яка опора?	Or have I not trusted in him? but help is far from me.
14	14
До страдника повинне бути співчуття від друга його, якщо тільки він не покинув страху до Вседержителя.	Mercy has rejected me; and the visitation of the Lord has disregarded me.
15	15
Але брати мої невірні, як потік, як швидкоплинні струмки,	My nearest relations have not regarded me; they have passed me by like a failing brook, or like a wave.
16	16
які чорні від льоду і в яких ховається сніг.	They who used to reverence me, now have come against me like snow or congealed ice.
17	17
Коли стає тепло, вони зменшуються, а під час спеки зникають з місць своїх.	When it has melted at the approach of heat, it is not known what it was.
18	18
Вони змінюють напрямок шляхів своїх, заходять у пустелю і губляться:	Thus I also have been deserted of all; and I am ruined, and become an outcast.

Навчіть мене, і я замовкну; покажіть, у чому я погрішив.	Teach ye me, and I will be silent: if in anything I have erred, tell me.

Які сильні слова правди! Але що доводять викриття ваші?	But as it seems, the words of a true man are vain, because I do not ask strength of you.

Ви придумуєте слова для викриття? На вітер пускаєте слова ваші.	Neither will your reproof cause me to cease my words, for neither will I endure the sound of your speech.

Ви нападаєте на сироту і риєте яму другові вашому.	Even because ye attack the fatherless, and insult your friend.

Але прошу вас, гляньте на мене; чи буду я говорити неправду перед лицем вашим?	But now, having looked upon your countenances, I will not lie.

Перегляньте, чи є неправда? переглянете, — правда моя.	Sit down now, and let there not be unrighteousness; and unite again with the just.

Чи є на язику моєму неправда? Невже гортань моя не може розрізнити гіркоти?	For there is no injustice in my tongue; and does not my throat meditate understanding?
Глава 7	Chapter 7

Чи не визначено людині час на землі, і дні її чи не такі самі, як і дні найманця?	Is not the life of man upon earth a state of trial? and his existence as that of a hireling by the day?

Як раб жадає тіні, і як найманець чекає закінчення роботи своєї,	Or as a servant that fears his master, and one who has grasped a shadow? or as a hireling waiting for his pay?

так я одержав у наділ місяці суєтні, і ночі гіркі відраховані мені.	So have I also endured months of vanity, and nights of pain have been appointed me.

Коли лягаю, то говорю: «колись встану?», а вечір триває, і я перевертаюся досита до самого світанку.	Whenever I lie down, I say, When will it be day? and whenever I rise up, again I say when will it be evening? and I am full of pains from evening to morning.

Тіло моє одягнене червою і запорошеними струпами; шкіра моя тріскається і гноїться.	And my body is covered with loathsome worms; and I waste away, scraping off clods of dust from my eruption.

Дні мої біжать скоріше за човника і закінчуються без надії.	And my life is lighter than a word, and has perished in vain hope.

Згадай, що життя моє подув, що око моє не повернеться, щоб бачити добре.	Remember then that my life is breath, and mine eye shall not yet again see good.

Не побачить мене око того, хто бачив мене; очі Твої на мене, — і немає мене.	The eye of him that sees me shall not see me again: thine eyes are upon me, and I am no more.

Рідіє хмара й зникає; так той, хто зійшов у пекло, не вийде,	I am as a cloud that is cleared away from the sky: for if a man go down to the grave, he shall not come up again:

не повернеться більше у дім свій, і місце його вже не буде знати його.	and he shall surely not return to his own house, neither shall his place know him any more.

Не буду ж я стримувати вуст моїх; буду говорити у пригніченні духу мого; буду скаржитися в печалі душі моєї.	Then neither will I refrain my mouth: I will speak being in distress; being in anguish I will disclose the bitterness of my soul.

Хіба я море або морське чудовисько, що Ти поставив наді мною сторожу?	Am I a sea, or a serpent, that thou hast set a watch over me?

Коли подумаю: втішить мене постіль моя, забере горе моє ложе моє,	I said that my bed should comfort me, and I would privately counsel with myself on my couch.

ти страшиш мене снами і видіннями лякаєш мене;	Thou scarest me with dreams, and dost terrify me with visions.

і душа моя бажає краще припинення дихання, краще смерти, ніж збереження кісток моїх.	Thou wilt separate life from my spirit; and yet keep my bones from death.

Огидним стало для мене життя. Не вічно жити мені. Відступи від мене, тому що дні мої суєта.	For I shall not live for ever, that I should patiently endure: depart from me, for my life is vain.

Що таке людина, що Ти так цінуєш її і звертаєш на неї увагу Твою,	For what is man, that thou hast magnified him? or that thou givest heed to him?

відвідуєш її кожного ранку, кожну мить випробовуєш її?	Wilt thou visit him till the morning, and judge him till the time of rest?

Доки ж Ти не залишиш, доки не відійдеш від мене, доки не даси мені проковтнути слину мою?	How long dost thou not let me alone, nor let me go, until I shall swallow down my spittle?

Якщо я згрішив, то що я зроблю Тобі, страж людей! Навіщо Ти поставив мене супротивником Собі, так що я став самому собі за тягар?	If I have sinned, what shall I be able to do, O thou that understandest the mind of men? why hast thou made me as thine accuser, and why am I a burden to thee?

І чому б не простити мені гріха і не зняти з мене беззаконня мого? бо, ось, я ляжу в порох; завтра шукатимеш мене, і мене немає.	Why hast thou not forgotten my iniquity, and purged my sin? but now I shall depart to the earth; and in the morning, I am no more.
Глава 8	Chapter 8

І відповів Вилдад савхеянин і сказав:	Then Baldad the Sauchite answered, and said,

чи довго ти будеш говорити так? — слова? вуст твоїх бурхливий вітер!	How long wilt thou speak these things, how long shall the breath of thy mouth be abundant in words?

Невже Бог спотворює суд, і Вседержитель перетворює правду?	Will the Lord be unjust when he judges; or will he that has made all things pervert justice?
4	4
Якщо сини твої згрішили перед Ним, то Він і віддав їх у руку беззаконня їхнього.	If thy sons have sinned before him, he has cast them away because of their transgression.
5	5
Якщо ж ти знайдеш Бога і помолишся Вседержителю,	But be thou early in prayer to the Lord Almighty.
6	6
і якщо ти чистий і правий, то Він нині ж встане над тобою й умиротворить оселю правди твоєї.	If thou art pure and true, he will hearken to thy supplication, and will restore to thee the habitation of righteousness.
7	7
І якщо спочатку в тебе було мало, то згодом буде дуже багато.	Though then thy beginning should be small, yet thy end should be unspeakably great.

Бо запитай у минулих родів і вникни у спостереження батьків їх;	For ask of the former generation, and search diligently among the race of our fathers:

а ми — вчорашні і нічого не знаємо, тому що наші дні на землі тінь.	(for we are of yesterday, and know nothing; for our life upon the earth is a shadow:)

Ось, вони навчать тебе, скажуть тобі і від серця свого промовлять слова:	shall not these teach thee, and report to thee, and bring out words from their heart?

чи піднімається очерет без вологи? чи росте очерет без води?	Does the rush flourish without water, or shall the flag grow up without moisture?

Ще він у свіжості своїй і не зрізаний, а раніше всякої трави засихає.	When it is yet on the root, and though it has not been cut down, does not any herb wither before it has received moisture?

Такі путі всіх, хто забуває Бога, і надія лицеміра загине;	Thus then shall be the end of all that forget the Lord: for the hope of the ungodly shall perish.
14	14
уповання його підрізане, і впевненість його — дім павука.	For his house shall be without inhabitants, and his tent shall prove a spider's web.
15	15
Обіпреться об дім свій і не встоїть; схопиться за нього і не утримається.	If he should prop up his house, it shall not stand: and when he has taken hold of it, it shall not remain.
16	16
Він зеленіє перед сонцем, за сад простягаються гілки його;	For it is moist under the sun, and his branch shall come forth out of his dung-heap.
17	17
у купу каміння вплітається коріння його, між камінням врізується.	He lies down upon a gathering of stones, and shall live in the midst of flints.

Але коли вирвуть його з місця його, воно відмовиться від нього: «я не бачило тебе!»	If God should destroy him, his place shall deny him. Hast thou not seen such things,

Ось радість шляху його! а із землі виростають інші.	that such is the overthrow of the ungodly? and out of the earth another shall grow.
20	20
Бачиш, Бог не відкидає непорочного і не підтримує руки? лиходіїв.	For the Lord will by no means reject the harmless man; but he will not receive any gift of the ungodly.
21	21
Він ще наповнить сміхом вуста твої і губи твої радісним вигуком.	But he will fill with laughter the mouth of the sincere, and their lips with thanksgiving.
22	22
Ненависники твої вдягнуться в сором, і намету нечестивих не стане.	But their adversaries shall clothe themselves with shame; and the habitation of the ungodly shall perish.
Глава 9	Chapter 9

І відповів Іов і сказав:	Then Job answered and said,

правда! знаю, що так; але як виправдається людина перед Богом?	I know of a truth that it is so: for how shall a mortal man be just before the Lord?

Якщо захоче вступити в суперечку з Ним, то не відповість Йому на жодне з тисячі.	For if he would enter into judgment with him, God would not hearken to him, so that he should answer to one of his charges of a thousand.
4	4
Премудрий серцем і могутній силою; хто повставав проти Нього і залишався у спокої?	For he is wise in mind, and mighty, and great: who has hardened himself against him and endured?
5	5
Він пересуває гори, і не впізнають їх: Він перетворює їх у гніві Своєму;	Who wears out the mountains, and men know it not: who overturns them in anger.
6	6
зрушує землю з місця її, і стовпи її тремтять;	Who shakes the earth under heaven from its foundations, and its pillars totter.
7	7
скаже сонцю, — і не зійде, і на зірки накладає печатку.	Who commands the sun, and it rises not; and he seals up the stars.
8	8
Він один розпростирає небеса і ходить по висотах моря;	Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
9	9
створив Ас, Кесиль і Хима^* і тайники півдня;	Who makes Pleias, and Hesperus, and Arcturus, and the chambers of the south.
10	10
робить велике, недослідиме і дивовижне без міри!	Who does great and unsearchable things; glorious also and excellent things, innumerable.

Ось, Він пройде переді мною, і не побачу Його; пронесеться, і не помічу Його.	If ever he should go beyond me, I shall not see him: if he should pass by me, neither thus have I known it.

Візьме, і хто заборонить Йому? хто скаже Йому: що Ти робиш?	If he would take away, who shall turn him back? or who shall say to him, What hast thou done?
13	13
Бог не відверне гніву Свого; перед Ним упадуть поборники гордині.	For if he has turned away his anger, the whales under heaven have stooped under him.
14	14
Тим більше чи можу я відповідати Йому і вишукувати собі слова перед Ним?	Oh then that he would hearken to me, or judge my cause.
15	15
Хоч би я і правий був, але не буду відповідати, а буду благати Суддю мого.	For though I be righteous, he will not hearken to me: I will intreat his judgment.
16	16
Якби я воззвав, і Він відповів мені, — я не повірив би, що голос мій почув Той,	And if I should call and he should not hearken, I cannot believe that he has listened to my voice.
17	17
Хто у вихорі вражає мене і примножує невинно мої рани,	Let him not crush me with a dark storm: but he has made my bruises many without cause.
18	18
не дає мені перевести дух, але пересичує мене гіркотою.	For he suffers me not to take breath, but he has filled me with bitterness.
19	19
Якщо діяти силою, то Він могутній; якщо судом, хто зведе мене з Ним?	For indeed he is strong in power: who then shall resist his judgment?
20	20
Якщо я буду виправдовуватися, то мої ж вуста звинуватять мене; якщо я невинний, то Він визнає мене винним.	For though I should seem righteous, my mouth will be profane: and though I should seem blameless, I shall be proved perverse.

Невинний я; не хочу знати душі моєї, зневажаю життя моє.	For even if I have sinned, I know it not in my soul: but my life is taken away.

Все одно; тому я сказав, що Він губить і непорочного і винного.	Wherefore I said, Wrath slays the great and mighty man.

Якщо цього вражає Він бичем раптово, то над катуванням невинних сміється.	For the worthless die, but the righteous are laughed to scorn.

Земля віддана в руки нечестивих; обличчя суддів її Він закриває. Якщо не Він, то хто ж?	For they are delivered into the hands of the unrighteous man: he covers the faces of the judges of the earth: but if it be not he, who is it?

Дні мої швидші за гінця, — біжать, не бачать добра,	But my life is swifter than a post: my days have fled away, and they knew it not.

несуться, як легкі човни, як орел рине на здобичу.	Or again, is there a trace of their path left by ships? or is there one of the flying eagle as it seeks its prey?

Якщо сказати мені: забуду я скарги мої, відкину похмурий вигляд свій і підбадьорюся;	And if I should say, I will forget to speak, I will bow down my face and groan;

то тремчу від усіх страждань моїх, знаючи, що Ти не оголосиш мене невинним.	I quake in all my limbs, for I know that thou wilt not leave me alone as innocent.

Якщо ж я винен, то для чого даремно томлюся?	But since I am ungodly, why have I not died?

Хоч би я обмився і сніговою водою і зовсім очистив руки мої,	For if I should wash myself with snow, and purge myself with pure hands,

то і тоді Ти зануриш мене у бруд, і буде гидувати мною одяг мій.	thou hadst thoroughly plunged me in filth, and my garment had abhorred me.

Тому що Він не людина, як я, щоб я міг відповідати Йому і йти разом з Ним на суд!	For thou art not man like me, with whom I could contend, that we might come together to judgment.
33	33
Немає між нами посередника, який поклав би руку свою на обох нас.	Would that he our mediator were present, and a reprover, and one who should hear the cause between both.

Нехай відведе Він від мене жезл Свій, і страх Його нехай не жахає мене, —	Let him remove his rod from me, and let not his fear terrify me:

і тоді я буду говорити і не убоюся Його, бо я не такий сам у собі.	so shall I not be afraid, but I will speak: for I am not thus conscious of guilt.
Глава 10	Chapter 10

1	1
Обридло душі моїй життя моє; віддамся суму моєму; буду говорити в скорботі душі моєї.	Weary in my soul, I will pour my words with groans upon him: I will speak being straitened in the bitterness of my soul.
2	2
Скажу Богу: не звинувачуй мене; оголоси мені, за що Ти зі мною борешся?	And I will say to the Lord, Do not teach me to be impious; and wherefore hast thou thus judged me?
3	3
Чи добре для Тебе, що Ти пригнічуєш, що зневажаєш діла рук Твоїх, а на раду нечестивих посилаєш світло?	Is it good before thee if I be unrighteous? for thou hast disowned the work of thy hands, and attended to the counsel of the ungodly.

Хіба у Тебе плотські очі, і Ти дивишся, як дивиться людина?	Or dost thou see as a mortal sees? or wilt thou look as a man sees?

Хіба дні Твої, як дні людини, або літа Твої, як дні чоловіка,	Or is thy life human, or thy years the years of a man,

чому Ти шукаєш пороку в мені і допитуєшся гріха в мені,	that thou hast enquired into mine iniquity, and searched out my sins?

хоча знаєш, що я не беззаконник, і що нема кому визволити мене від руки Твоєї?	For thou knowest that I have not committed iniquity: but who is he that can deliver out of thy hands?

Твої руки трудилися наді мною й створили всього мене цілком, — і Ти губиш мене?	Thy hands have formed me and made me; afterwards thou didst change thy mind, and smite me.
9	9
Згадай, що Ти, як глину, обробив мене, і в порох повертаєш мене?	Remember that thou hast made me as clay, and thou dost turn me again to earth.
10	10
Чи не Ти вилив мене, як молоко, і, як сир, згустив мене,	Hast thou not poured me out like milk, and curdled me like cheese?
11	11
шкірою і плоттю одяг мене, кістками і жилами скріпив мене,	And thou didst clothe me with skin and flesh, and frame me with bones and sinews.
12	12
життя і милість дарував мені, і піклування Твоє зберігало дух мій?	And thou didst bestow upon me life and mercy, and thy oversight has preserved my spirit.
13	13
Але і те приховував Ти в серці Своєму, — знаю, що це було в Тебе, —	Having these things in thyself, I know that thou canst do all things; for nothing is impossible with thee.
14	14
бо якщо я згрішу, Ти помітиш і не залишиш гріха мого без покарання.	And if I should sin, thou watchest me; and thou hast not cleared me from iniquity.
15	15
Якщо я винен, горе мені! якщо і правий, то не насмілюся підняти голови моєї. Я пересичений приниженням; глянь на страждання моє:	Or if I should be ungodly, woe is me: and if I should be righteous, I cannot lift myself up, for I am full of dishonour.

воно збільшується. Ти женешся за мною, як лев, і знову нападаєш на мене і дивним являєшся в мені.	For I am hunted like a lion for slaughter; for again thou hast changed and art terribly destroying me;

Виводиш нових свідків Твоїх проти мене; підсилюєш гнів Твій на мене; і біди, одні за іншими, ополчаються проти мене.	renewing against me my torture: and thou hast dealt with me in great anger, and thou hast brought trials upon me.

І навіщо Ти вивів мене з утроби? нехай би я помер, коли ще нічиє око не бачило мене;	Why then didst thou bring me out of the womb? and why did I not die, and no eye see me,
19	19
нехай би я, як той, що не був, з утроби перенесений був у гріб!	and I become as if I had not been? for why was I not carried from the womb to the grave?

Чи не короткі дні мої? Залиш, відступи від мене, щоб я трохи підбадьорився,	Is not the time of my life short? suffer me to rest a little,

раніше ніж відійду, — і вже не повернуся, — у країну темряви і сіні смертної,	before I go whence I shall not return, to a land of darkness and gloominess;

у країну мороку, який є морок тіні смертної, де немає упорядкування, де темно, як сама темрява.	to a land of perpetual darkness, where there is no light, neither can any one see the life of mortals.
Глава 11	Chapter 11

І відповів Софар наамитянин і сказав:	Then Sophar the Minæan answered and said,

хіба на безліч слів не можна дати відповіді, і хіба людина багатослівна права?	He that speaks much, should also hear on the other side: or does the fluent speaker think himself to be righteous? blessed is the short-lived offspring of woman.

Марнослів’я твоє чи змусить мовчати мужів, щоб ти глумився, і нікому було присоромити тебе?	Be not a speaker of many words; for is there none to answer thee?
4	4
Ти сказав: судження моє вірне, і чистий я в очах Твоїх.	For say not, I am pure in my works, and blameless before him.
5	5
Але якби Бог заговорив і відкрив уста Свої до тебе	But oh that the Lord would speak to thee, and open his lips with thee!
6	6
і відкрив тобі таємниці премудрости, що тобі вдвічі більше належало б понести! Отже, знай, що Бог для тебе деякі з беззаконь твоїх піддав забуттю.	Then shall he declare to thee the power of wisdom; for it shall be double of that which is with thee: and then shalt thou know, that a just recompence of thy sins has come to thee from the Lord.

Чи можеш ти дослідженням знайти Бога? Чи можеш зовсім пізнати Вседержителя?	Wilt thou find out the traces of the Lord? or hast thou come to the end of that which the Almighty has made?
8	8
Він вище небес, — що ти можеш зробити? глибше пекла, — що можеш дізнатися?	Heaven is high; and what wilt thou do? and there are deeper things than those in hell; what dost thou know?

Довша за землю міра Його і ширша за море.	Or longer than the measure of the earth, or the breadth of the sea.
10	10
Якщо Він пройде й закує кого в кайдани і представить на суд, то хто відхилить Його?	And if he should overthrow all things, who will say to him, What hast thou done?

Бо Він знає людей неправдивих і бачить беззаконня, і чи залишить його без уваги?	For he knows the works of transgressors; and when he sees wickedness, he will not overlook it.

Але пустий чоловік мудрує, хоч людина народжується подібно до дикого осляти.	But man vainly buoys himself up with words; and a mortal born of woman is like an ass of the desert.
13	13
Якщо ти управиш серце твоє і простягнеш до Нього руки твої,	For if thou hast made thine heart pure, and liftest up thine hands towards him;
14	14
і якщо є порок у руці твоїй, а ти відкинеш його і не даси беззаконню жити в наметах твоїх,	if there is any iniquity in thy hands, put it far from thee, and let not unrighteousness lodge in thy habitation.
15	15
то піднімеш незаплямоване лице твоє і будеш твердим і не будеш боятися.	For thus shall thy countenance shine again, as pure water; and thou shalt divest thyself of uncleanness, and shalt not fear.
16	16
Тоді забудеш горе: як про воду, яка протекла, будеш згадувати про нього.	And thou shalt forget trouble, as a wave that has passed by; and thou shalt not be scared.
17	17
І ясніше за полудень піде життя твоє; просвітлієш, як ранок.	And thy prayer shall be as the morning star, and life shall arise to thee as from the noon-day.
18	18
І будеш спокійний, тому що є надія; ти огороджений, і можеш спати безпечно.	And thou shalt be confident, because thou hast hope; and peace shall dawn to thee from out of anxiety and care.

Будеш лежати, і не буде того, що страшить, і багато хто буде підлещуватися до тебе.	For thou shalt be at ease, and there shall be no one to fight against thee; and many shall charge, and make supplication to thee.

А очі беззаконних витечуть, і притулок їхній пропаде, і надія їхня зникне.	But safety shall fail them; for their hope is destruction, and the eyes of the ungodly shall waste away.
Глава 12	Chapter 12

1	1
І відповів Іов і сказав:	And Job answered and said,

дійсно, тільки ви люди, і з вами помре мудрість!	So then ye alone are men, and wisdom shall die with you?
3	3
І у мене є серце, як у вас; не нижчий я за вас; і хто не знає того ж?	But I also have a heart as well as you.
4	4
Посміховищем став я для друга свого, я, що взивав до Бога, і якому Він відповідав, посміховиськом — чоловік праведний, непорочний.	For a righteous and blameless man has become a subject for mockery.
5	5
Так знехтуваний за думками того, хто сидить у спокої, смолоскип, приготований для тих, що спотикаються ногами.	For it had been ordained that he should fall under others at the appointed time, and that his houses should be spoiled by transgressors: let not however any one trust that, being evil, he shall be held guiltless,

Спокійні намети у грабіжників і безпечні у тих, хто прогнівляє Бога, які ніби Бога носять у руках своїх.	even as many as provoke the Lord, as if there were indeed to be no inquisition made of them.
7	7
І справді: запитай у худоби, і навчить тебе, у птаха небесного, і сповістить тебе;	But ask now the beasts, if they may speak to thee; and the birds of the air, if they may declare to thee.

або поговори з землею, і наставить тебе, і скажуть тобі риби морські.	Tell the earth, if it may speak to thee: and the fishes of the sea shall explain to thee.

Хто у всьому цьому не узнає, що рука Господа створила це?	Who then has not known in all these things, that the hand of the Lord has made them?
10	10
В Його руці душа всього, що живе, і дух усякої людської плоті.	Whereas the life of all living things is in his hand, and the breath of every man.
11	11
Чи не вухо розрізняє слова, і чи не язик розпізнає смак їжі?	For the ear tries words, and the palate tastes meats.
12	12
У старцях — мудрість, і у довголітніх — розум.	In length of time is wisdom, and in long life knowledge.
13	13
У Нього премудрість і сила; Його рада і розум.	With him are wisdom and power, with him counsel and understanding.

Що Він зруйнує, те не побудується; кого Він ув’язнить, той не звільниться.	If he should cast down, who will build up? if he should shut up against men, who shall open?

Зупинить води, і все висохне; пустить їх, і перетворять землю.	If he should withhold the water, he will dry the earth: and if he should let it loose, he overthrows and destroys it.

У Нього могутність і премудрість, перед Ним той, хто помиляється і вводить в оману.	With him are strength and power: he has knowledge and understanding.

Він приводить радників до необміркованости і суддів робить нерозумними.	He leads counsellors away captive, and maddens the judges of the earth.

Він позбавляє перев’язів царів і поясом обв’язує стегна їхні;	He seats kings upon thrones, and girds their loins with a girdle.

князів позбавляє достоїнства і долає хоробрих;	He sends away priests into captivity, and overthrows the mighty ones of the earth.

віднімає язик у красномовців і старців позбавляє сенсу;	He changes the lips of the trusty, and he knows the understanding of the elders.

покриває соромом знаменитих і силу могутніх ослаблює;	He pours dishonour upon princes, and heals the lowly.

відкриває глибоке із середовища пітьми і виводить на світло тінь смертну;	Revealing deep things out of darkness: and he has brought into light the shadow of death.

примножує народи і знищує їх; розсіває народи і збирає їх;	Causing the nations to wander, and destroying them: overthrowing the nations, and leading them away.

віднімає розум у глав народу землі і залишає їх блукати в пустелі, де немає шляхів:	Perplexing the minds of the princes of the earth: and he causes them to wander in a way they have not known, saying,

навпомацки ходять вони у темряві без світла і тиняються, як п’яні.	Let them grope in darkness, and let there be no light, and let them wander as a drunken man.
Глава 13	Chapter 13

Ось, усе це бачило око моє, чуло вухо моє і помітило для себе.	Behold, mine eye has seen these things, and mine ear has heard them.

Скільки знаєте ви, знаю і я: не нижчий я за вас.	And I know all that ye too know; and I have not less understanding than you.

Але я до Вседержителя хотів би говорити і бажав би змагатися з Богом.	Nevertheless I will speak to the Lord, and I will reason before him, if he will.

А ви плітники неправди; усі ви марні лікарі.	But ye are all bad physicians, and healers of diseases.

О, якби ви тільки мовчали! це було б поставлено вам за мудрість.	But would that ye were silent, and it would be wisdom to you in the end.

Вислухайте ж міркування мої і вникніть у заперечення вуст моїх.	But hear ye the reasoning of my mouth, and attend to the judgment of my lips.

Чи належало вам заради Бога говорити неправду і для Нього говорити лжу?	Do ye not speak before the Lord, and utter deceit before him?
8	8
Чи належало вам бути упередженими до Нього і за Бога так сперечатися?	Or will ye draw back? nay, do ye yourselves be judges.

Чи добре буде, коли Він випробує вас? Чи обманете Його, як обманюють людину?	For it were well if he would thoroughly search you: for though doing all things in your power ye should attach yourselves to him,

Суворо покарає Він вас, хоч ви і приховано лицемірите.	he will not reprove you at all the less: but if moreover ye should secretly respect persons,

Невже велич Його не страшить вас, і страх Його не нападає на вас?	shall not his whirlpool sweep you round, and terror from him fall upon you?

Нагадування ваші подібні до попелу; опори ваші — оплоти глиняні.	And your glorying shall prove in the end to you like ashes, and your body like a body of clay.

Замовкніть переді мною, і я буду говорити, що не осягло б мене.	Be silent, that I may speak, and cease from mine anger,

Для чого мені терзати тіло моє зубами моїми і душу мою вкладати в руку мою?	while I may take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand.

Ось, Він убиває мене, але я буду сподіватися; я бажав би тільки відстояти путі мої перед лицем Його!	Though the Mighty One should lay hand upon me, forasmuch as he has begun, verily I will speak, and plead before him.

І це вже на виправдання мені, тому що лицемір не піде перед лице Його!	And this shall turn to me for salvation; for fraud shall have no entrance before him.

Вислухайте уважно слово моє і пояснення моє вухами вашими.	Hear, hear ye my words, for I will declare in your hearing.

Ось, я завів судову справу: знаю, що буду правий.	Behold, I am near my judgment: I know that I shall appear evidently just.

Хто у змозі заперечити мені? Бо я скоро замовкну і спущу дух.	For who is he that shall plead with me, that I should now be silent, and expire?

Двох тільки речей не роби зі мною, і тоді я не буду ховатися від лиця Твого:	But grant me two things: then I will not hide myself from thy face.

відніми від мене руку Твою, і жах Твій нехай не потрясає мене.	Withhold thine hand from me: and let not thy fear terrify me.

Тоді клич, і я буду відповідати, або буду говорити я, а Ти відповідай мені.	Then shalt thou call, and I will hearken to thee: or thou shalt speak, and I will give thee an answer.

Скільки в мене пороків і гріхів? покажи мені беззаконня моє і гріх мій.	How many are my sins and my transgressions? teach me what they are.

Для чого ховаєш лице Твоє і вважаєш мене ворогом Твоїм?	Wherefore hidest thou thyself from me, and deemest me thine enemy?

Чи не зірваний листок Ти розтрощуєш і чи не суху соломину переслідуєш?	Wilt thou be startled at me, as at a leaf shaken by the wind? or wilt thou set thyself against me as against grass borne upon the breeze?

Бо Ти пишеш на мене гірке і ставиш у провину мені гріхи юности моєї,	For thou hast written evil things against me, and thou hast compassed me with the sins of my youth.

і ставиш у колоду ноги мої і підстерігаєш усі шляхи мої, — женешся слідами ніг моїх.	And thou hast placed my foot in the stocks; and thou hast watched all my works, and hast penetrated to my heels.

А він, як гниле, розпадається, як одяг, з’їдений міллю.	I am as that which waxes old like a bottle, or like a moth-eaten garment.
Глава 14	Chapter 14

Людина, народжена жінкою, короткочасна і пересичена печалями:	For a mortal born of a woman is short-lived, and full of wrath.

як квітка, вона виростає й опадає; тікає, як тінь, і не зупиняється.	Or he falls like a flower that has bloomed; and he departs like a shadow, and cannot continue.

І на неї-то Ти відкриваєш очі Твої, і мене ведеш на суд з Тобою?	Hast thou not taken account even of him, and caused him to enter into judgment before thee?
4	4
Хто народиться чистим від нечистого? Жоден.	For who shall be pure from uncleanness? not even one;

Якщо дні йому визначені, і число місяців його в Тебе, якщо Ти поклав йому межу, якої він не перейде,	if even his life should be but one day upon the earth: and his months are numbered by him: thou hast appointed him for a time, and he shall by no means exceed it.

то ухилися від нього: нехай він відпочине, доки не закінчить, як найманець, дня свого.	Depart from him, that he may be quiet, and take pleasure in his life, though as a hireling.

Для дерева є надія, що воно, якщо і буде зрубане, знову оживе, і паростки від нього виходити не перестануть:	For there is hope for a tree, even if it should be cut down, that it shall blossom again, and its branch shall not fail.

якщо і застарів у землі корінь його, і пеньок його завмер у поросі,	For though its root should grow old in the earth, and its stem die in the rock;

але, лиш відчуло воду, воно дає паростки і пускає гілки, ніби знову посаджене.	it will blossom from the scent of water, and will produce a crop, as one newly planted.

А людина вмирає і розпадається; відійшла, і де вона?	But a man that has died is utterly gone; and when a mortal has fallen, he is no more.

Витікає вода з озера, і ріка вичерпується і висихає:	For the sea wastes in length of time, and a river fails and is dried up.

так людина ляже і не встане; до закінчення неба вона не пробудиться і не встане від сну свого.	And man that has lain down in death shall certainly not rise again till the heaven be dissolved, and they shall not awake from their sleep.

О, якби Ти в пеклі сховав мене і приховував мене, доки пройде гнів Твій, поклав мені термін і потім згадав про мене!	For oh that thou hadst kept me in the grave, and hadst hidden me until thy wrath should cease, and thou shouldest set me a time in which thou wouldest remember me!

Коли помре людина, то чи буде вона знову жити? В усі дні визначеного мені часу я очікував би, поки прийде мені зміна.	For if a man should die, shall he live again, having accomplished the days of his life? I will wait till I exist again?

Покликав би Ти, і я дав би Тобі відповідь, і Ти явив би благовоління творінню рук Твоїх;	Then shalt thou call, and I will hearken to thee: but do not thou reject the work of thine hands.

бо тоді Ти підраховував би кроки мої і не підстерігав би гріха мого;	But thou hast numbered my devices: and not one of my sins shall escape thee?

у сувої було б запечатане беззаконня моє, і Ти закрив би провину мою.	And thou hast sealed up my transgressions in a bag, and marked if I have been guilty of any transgression unawares.

Але гора, падаючи, руйнується, і скеля сходить з місця свого;	And verily a mountain falling will utterly be destroyed, and a rock shall be worn out of its place.
19	19
вода стирає камені; паводок її змиває земний порох: так і надію людини Ти знищуєш.	The waters wear the stones, and waters falling headlong overflow a heap of the earth: and thou destroyest the hope of man.
20	20
Пригнічуєш її до кінця, і вона відходить; змінюєш їй лице і відсилаєш її.	Thou drivest him to an end, and he is gone: thou settest thy face against him, and sendest him away;

Чи в пошані діти її — вона не знає, чи принижені — вона не відає;	and though his children be multiplied, he knows it not; and if they be few, he is not aware.

але плоть її на ній болить, і душа її в ній страждає.	But his flesh is in pain, and his soul mourns.
Глава 15	Chapter 15

І відповів Елифаз феманитянин і сказав:	Then Eliphaz the Thæmanite answered and said,

чи стане мудрий відповідати знанням пустим і наповнювати утробу свою вітром палючим,	Will a wise man give for answer a mere breath of wisdom? and does he fill up the pain of his belly,

виправдовуватися словами марними і промовою, яка не має ніякої сили?	reasoning with improper sayings, and with words wherein is no profit?

Так ти відклав і страх і за ніщо вважаєш слова до Бога.	Hast not thou moreover cast off fear, and accomplished such words before the Lord?

Нечестя твоє так налаштувало вуста твої, і ти обрав язик лукавих.	Thou art guilty by the words of thy mouth, neither hast thou discerned the words of the mighty.
6	6
Тебе звинувачують уста твої, а не я, і твій язик говорить проти тебе.	Let thine own mouth, and not me, reprove thee: and thy lips shall testify against thee.
7	7
Хіба ти першою людиною народився і раніше пагорбів створений?	What! art thou the first man that was born? or wert thou established before the hills?
8	8
Хіба раду Божу ти чув і залучив до себе премудрість?	Or hast thou heard the ordinance of the Lord? or has God used thee as his counsellor? and has wisdom come only to thee?

Що знаєш ти, чого б не знали ми? що розумієш ти, чого не було б і у нас?	For what knowest thou, that we know not? or what understandest thou, which we do not also?

І сивоволосий і старець є між нами, що днями перевищує батька твого.	Truly among us are both the old and very aged man, more advanced in days than thy father.

Хіба малі для тебе утішення Божі? І це невідомо тобі?	Thou hast been scourged for but few of thy sins: thou hast spoken haughtily and extravagantly.

До чого закликає тебе серце твоє, і чому так гордо дивишся?	What has thine heart dared? or what have thine eyes aimed at,

Навіщо спрямовуєш проти Бога дух твій і вустами твоїми промовляєш такі слова?	that thou hast vented thy rage before the Lord, and delivered such words from thy mouth?
14	14
Що таке людина, щоб бути їй чистою, і щоб народженому жінкою бути праведним?	For who, being a mortal, is such that he shall be blameless? or, who that is born of a woman, that he should be just?
15	15
Ось, Він і святим Своїм не довіряє, і небеса нечисті в очах Його:	Forasmuch as he trusts not his saints; and the heaven is not pure before him.
16	16
тим більше нечиста і розтлінна людина, яка п’є беззаконня, як воду.	Alas then, abominable and unclean is man, drinking unrighteousness as a draught.

Я буду говорити тобі, слухай мене; я розповім тобі, що бачив,	But I will tell thee, hearken to me; I will tell thee now what I have seen;

що чули мудрі і не приховали того, що почули від батьків своїх,	things wise men say, and their fathers have not hidden.

яким одним віддана була земля, і серед яких чужий не ходив.	To them alone the earth was given, and no stranger came upon them.

Нечестивий мучить себе в усі дні свої, і число років закрите від гнобителя;	All the life of the ungodly is spent in care, and the years granted to the oppressor are numbered.

звук жахів у вухах його; під час миру іде на нього згубник.	And his terror is in his ears: just when he seems to be at peace, his overthrow will come.

Він не сподівається врятуватися від темряви; бачить перед собою меч.	Let him not trust that he shall return from darkness, for he has been already made over to the power of the sword.

Він поневіряється за шматком хліба всюди; знає, що вже готовий, в руках у нього день пітьми.	And he has been appointed to be food for vultures; and he knows within himself that he is doomed to be a carcase: and a dark day shall carry him away as with a whirlwind.

Страшать його нестатки і пригнічення; долають його, як цар, який приготувався до битви,	Distress also and anguish shall come upon him: he shall fall as a captain in the first rank.

за те, що він простягав проти Бога руку свою і противився Вседержителю,	For he has lifted his hands against the Lord, and he has hardened his neck against the Almighty Lord.

виступав проти Нього з гордою шиєю, під товстими щитами своїми;	And he has run against him with insolence, on the thickness of the back of his shield.

тому що він покрив лице своє жиром своїм і обклав жиром стегна свої.	For he has covered his face with his fat, and made layers of fat upon his thighs.

І він оселяється в містах зруйнованих, у домах, у яких не живуть, які приречені на руїни.	And let him lodge in desolate cities, and enter into houses without inhabitant: and what they have prepared, others shall carry away.

Не стане він багатим, і не вціліє майно його, і не розповсюдиться по землі надбання його.	Neither shall he at all grow rich, nor shall his substance remain: he shall not cast a shadow upon the earth.

Не втече від пітьми; паростки його висушить полум’я і подихом вуст своїх втягне його.	Neither shall he in any wise escape the darkness: let the wind blast his blossom, and let his flower fall off.

Нехай не довіряє суєті заблудлий, тому що суєта буде і відплатою йому.	Let him not think that he shall endure; for his end shall be vanity.

Не у свій день він помре, і віття його не буде зеленіти.	His harvest shall perish before the time, and his branch shall not flourish.

Скине він, як виноградна лоза, недостиглу ягоду свою і, як олива, стряхне цвіт свій.	And let him be gathered as the unripe grape before the time, and let him fall as the blossom of the olive.

Так стане порожнім дім нечестивого, і вогонь пожере намети хабарництва.	For death is the witness of an ungodly man, and fire shall burn the houses of them that receive gifts.

Він зачав зло і породив неправду, й утроба його готує оману.	And he shall conceive sorrows, and his end shall be vanity, and his belly shall bear deceit.
Глава 16	Chapter 16

І відповів Іов і сказав:	But Job answered and said,

чув я багато такого; жалюгідні утішителі всі ви!	I have heard many such things: poor comforters are ye all.

Чи буде кінець легковажним словам? і що спонукало тебе так відповідати?	What! is there any reason in vain words? or what will hinder thee from answering?

І я міг би так само говорити, як ви, якби душа ваша була на місці душі моєї; ополчався б на вас словами і кивав би на вас головою моєю;	I also will speak as ye do: if indeed your soul were in my soul's stead, then would I insult you with words, and I would shake my head at you.

підкріплював би вас язиком моїм і рухом губ утішав би.	And would there were strength in my mouth, and I would not spare the movement of my lips.

Чи говорю я, не стихає скорбота моя; чи перестаю, що відходить від мене?	For if I should speak, I shall not feel the pain of my wound: and if I should be silent, how shall I be wounded the less?

Але нині Він виснажив мене. Ти зруйнував усю родину мою.	But now he has made me weary, and a worn-out fool; and thou hast laid hold of me.

Ти покрив мене зморшками як свідчення проти мене; повстає на мене виснаженість моя, у лице докоряє мені.	My falsehood has become a testimony, and has risen up against me: it has confronted me to my face.

Гнів Його терзає і ворогує проти мене, скрегоче на мене зубами своїми; ворог мій гострить на мене очі свої.	In his anger he has cast me down; he has gnashed his teeth upon me: the weapons of his robbers have fallen upon me.
10	10
Розкрили на мене пащу свою; ганьблять і б’ють мене по щоках: усі змовилися проти мене.	He has attacked me with the keen glances of his eyes; with his sharp spear he has smitten me down upon my knees; and they have run upon me with one accord.
11	11
Віддав мене Бог беззаконнику і у руки нечестивих кинув мене.	For the Lord has delivered me into the hands of unrighteous men, and thrown me upon the ungodly.
12	12
Я був спокійним, але Він потряс мене; взяв мене за шию і побив мене і поставив мене мішенню для Себе.	When I was at peace he distracted me: he took me by the hair of the head, and plucked it out: he set me up as a mark.
13	13
Оточили мене стрільці Його; Він розсікає нутрощі мої і не щадить, пролив на землю жовч мою,	They surrounded me with spears, aiming at my reins: without sparing me they poured out my gall upon the ground.
14	14
пробиває в мені пролам за проламом, біжить на мене, як ратоборець.	They overthrew me with fall upon fall: they ran upon me in their might.
15	15
Веретище зшив я на шкіру мою й у порох поклав голову мою.	They sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and my strength has been spent on the ground.

Обличчя моє почервоніло від плачу, і на повіках моїх тінь смерти,	My belly has been parched with wailing, and darkness is on my eyelids.

попри все те, що немає вкраденого в руках моїх, і молитва моя чиста.	Yet there was no injustice in my hands, and my prayer is pure.

Земле! не закрий моєї крови, і нехай не буде місця воланню моєму.	Earth, cover not over the blood of my flesh, and let my cry have no place.

І нині ось на небесах Свідок мій, і Заступник мій у вишніх!	And now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my advocate is on high.

Багатомовні друзі мої! До Бога плачуть очі мої.	Let my supplication come to the Lord, and let mine eye weep before him.

О, якби чоловік міг змагатися з Богом, як син людський із ближнім своїм!	Oh that a man might plead before the Lord, even as the son of man with his neighbour!

Бо літам моїм приходить кінець, і я відходжу в путь безповоротну.	But my years are numbered and their end come, and I shall go by the way by which I shall not return.
Глава 17	Chapter 17

Дихання моє ослабло; дні мої вгасають; гроби переді мною.	I perish, carried away by the wind, and I seek for burial, and obtain it not.
2	2
Якби не глузування їх, то і серед спорів їх око моє перебувало б спокійним.	Weary I intreat; and what have I done? and strangers have stolen my goods.
3	3
Заступися, поручися Сам за мене перед Собою! інакше хто поручиться за мене?	Who is this? let him join hands with me.
4	4
Бо Ти закрив серце їх від розуміння, і тому не даси торжествувати їм.	For thou hast hid their heart from wisdom; therefore thou shalt not exalt them.
5	5
Хто прирікає друзів своїх на здобич, у дітей того очі витечуть.	He shall promise mischief to his companions: but their eyes have failed for their children.
6	6
Він поставив мене притчею для народу і посміховищем для нього.	But thou hast made me a byword among the nations, and I am become a scorn to them.
7	7
Помутніли від горя очі мої, і всі члени мої, як тінь.	For my eyes are dimmed through pain; I have been grievously beset by all.

Здивуються від цього праведні, і невинний обуриться на лицеміра.	Wonder has seized true men upon this; and let the just rise up against the transgressor.

Але праведник буде міцно триматися путі своєї, і чистий руками буде більше і більше утверджуватися.	But let the faithful hold on his own way, and let him that is pure of hands take courage.

Виступайте, всі ви, і підійдіть; не знайду я мудрого між вами.	Howbeit, do ye all strengthen yourselves and come now, for I do not find truth in you.

Дні мої минули; думи мої — надбання серця мого — розбиті.	My days have passed in groaning, and my heart-strings are broken.

А вони ніч хочуть перетворити на день, світло наблизити до лиця пітьми.	I have turned the night into day: the light is short because of darkness.

Якби я й очікувати став, то пекло — дім мій; у пітьмі постелю я постіль мою;	For if I remain, Hades is my habitation: and my bed has been made in darkness.

гробу скажу: ти батько мій, черві: ти мати моя і сестра моя.	I have called upon death to be my father, and corruption to be my mother and sister.

Де ж після цього надія моя? і очікуване мною хто побачить?	Where then is yet my hope? or where shall I see my good?

У пекло зійде вона і буде спочивати зі мною у поросі.	Will they go down with me to Hades, or shall we go down together to the tomb?
Глава 18	Chapter 18

І відповів Вилдад савхеянин і сказав:	Then Baldad the Sauchite answered and said,

коли ж покладете ви кінець таким словам? обміркуйте, і потім будемо говорити.	How long wilt thou continue? forbear, that we also may speak.

Навіщо вважатися нам за тварин і бути приниженими у власних очах ваших?	For wherefore have we been silent before thee like brutes?
4	4
О ти, що роздираєш душу твою у гніві твоєму! Невже для тебе — спустіти землі, і скелі зрушити з місця свого?	Anger has possessed thee: for what if thou shouldest die; would the earth under heaven be desolate? or shall the mountains be overthrown from their foundations?

Так, світло в беззаконного погасне, і не залишиться іскри від вогню його.	But the light of the ungodly shall be quenched, and their flame shall not go up.
6	6
Померкне світло в наметі його, і світильник його погасне над ним.	His light shall be darkness in his habitation, and his lamp shall be put out with him.
7	7
Скоротяться кроки могутности його, і подолає його власний намір його,	Let the meanest of men spoil his goods, and let his counsel deceive him.
8	8
бо він потрапить у сіті свої ногами і по тенетах ходити буде.	His foot also has been caught in a snare, and let it be entangled in a net.

Петля зачепить за ногу його, і грабіжник уловить його.	And let snares come upon him: he shall strengthen those that thirst for his destruction.

Потай розкладені по землі сильці для нього і пастки на дорозі.	His snare is hid in the earth, and that which shall take him is by the path.

З усіх боків будуть страшити його жахи і примусять його кидатися туди і сюди.	Let pains destroy him round about, and let many enemies come about him,

Виснажиться від голоду сила його, і загибель готова, збоку в нього.	vex him with distressing hunger: and a signal destruction has been prepared for him.
13	13
З’їсть члени тіла його, з’їсть члени його первісток смерти.	Let the soles of his feet be devoured: and death shall consume his beauty.
14	14
Вигнана буде з намету його надія його, і це зведе його до царя жахів.	And let health be utterly banished from his tabernacle, and let distress seize upon him with a charge from the king.
15	15
Оселяться в наметі його, тому що він уже не його; житло його посипане буде сіркою.	It shall dwell in his tabernacle in his night: his excellency shall be sown with brimstone.

Знизу підсохнуть корені його, і зверху зів’януть гілки його.	His roots shall be dried up from beneath, and his crop shall fall away from above.

Пам’ять про нього зникне з землі, й імені його не буде на площі.	Let his memorial perish out of the earth, and his name shall be publicly cast out.

Виженуть його зі світла в темряву і зітруть його з лиця землі.	Let one drive him from light into darkness.

Ні сина його, ні онука не буде в народі його, і нікого не залишиться в оселях його.	He shall not be known among his people, nor his house preserved on the earth.

Про день його жахнуться нащадки, і сучасники будуть обійняті тремтінням.	But strangers shall dwell in his possessions: the last groaned for him, and wonder seized the first.

Такі оселі беззаконного, і таке місце того, хто не знає Бога.	These are the houses of the unrighteous, and this is the place of them that know not the Lord.
Глава 19	Chapter 19

І відповів Іов і сказав:	Then Job answered and said,

доки будете мучити душу мою і мучити мене словами?	How long will ye vex my soul, and destroy me with words? only know that the Lord has dealt with me thus.

Ось, уже разів десять ви соромили мене і не соромитеся гнітити мене.	Ye speak against me; ye do not feel for me, but bear hard upon me.
4	4
Якщо я і дійсно згрішив, то провина моя при мені залишається.	Yea verily, I have erred in truth, (but the error abides with myself)

то знайте, що Бог відкинув мене й обклав мене Своєю сіткою.	Know then that it is the Lord that has troubled me, and has raised his bulwark against me.

Ось, я кричу; образа! і ніхто не слухає; волаю, і немає суду.	Behold, I laugh at reproach; I will not speak: or I will cry out, but there is nowhere judgment.

Він перекрив мені дорогу, і не можу пройти, і на шляхи мої поклав темряву.	I am fenced round about, and can by no means escape: he has set darkness before my face.

Стягнув з мене славу мою і зняв вінець з голови моєї.	And he has stripped me of my glory, and has taken the crown from my head.
10	10
Зовсім зруйнував мене, і я відходжу; і, як дерево, Він вивергнув надію мою.	He has torn me round about, and I am gone: and he has cut off my hope like a tree.
11	11
Запалав на мене гнівом Своїм і вважає мене між ворогами Своїми.	And he has dreadfully handled me in anger, and has counted me for an enemy.
12	12
Полки Його прийшли разом і спрямували шлях свій до мене і розташувалися навколо намету мого.	His troops also came upon me with one accord, liers in wait compassed my ways.
13	13
Братів моїх Він віддалив від мене, і ті, що знають мене, цураються мене.	My brethren have stood aloof from me; they have recognised strangers rather than me: and my friends have become pitiless.
14	14
Покинули мене близькі мої, і знайомі мої забули мене.	My nearest of kin have not acknowledged me, and they that knew my name, have forgotten me.
15	15
Прибулі у домі моєму і служниці мої чужим вважають мене; стороннім став я в очах їхніх.	As for my household, and my maid-servants, I was a stranger before them.
16	16
Кличу слугу мого, і він не відгукується; вустами моїми я повинен благати його.	I called my servant, and he hearkened not; and my mouth intreated him.

Дихання моє стало огидним дружині моїй, і я повинен благати її заради дітей утроби моєї.	And I besought my wife, and earnestly intreated the sons of my concubines.

Навіть малі діти зневажають мене: піднімаюся, і вони знущаються з мене.	But they rejected me for ever; whenever I rise up, they speak against me.

Гребують мною всі наперсники мої, і ті, яких я любив, повернулися проти мене.	They that saw me abhorred me: the very persons whom I had loved, rose up against me.

Кістки мої прилипли до шкіри моєї і плоті моєї, і я залишився тільки зі шкірою біля зубів моїх.	My flesh is corrupt under my skin, and my bones are held in my teeth.

Помилуйте мене, помилуйте мене ви, друзі мої, бо рука Божа торкнулася мене.	Pity me, pity me, O friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me.

Навіщо і ви переслідуєте мене, як Бог, і плоттю моєю не можете насититися?	Wherefore do ye persecute me as also the Lord does, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

О, якби записані були слова мої! Якби накреслені були вони у книзі	For oh that my words were written, and that they were recorded in a book for ever,

різцем залізним з оловом, — на вічний час на камені вирізані були!	with an iron pen and lead, or graven in the rocks!

А я знаю, Відкупитель мій живий, і Він в останній день воскресить з пороху цю мою шкіру, що розпадається,	For I know that he is eternal who is about to deliver me,

і я у плоті моїй побачу Бога.	and to raise up upon the earth my skin that endures these sufferings: for these things have been accomplished to me of the Lord;

Я побачу Його сам; мої очі, не очі іншого, побачать Його. Тане серце моє в грудях моїх!	which I am conscious of in myself, which mine eye has seen, and not another, but all have been fulfilled to me in my bosom.

Вам належало б сказати: навіщо ми переслідуємо його? Начебто корінь зла знайшли в мені.	But if ye shall also say, What shall we say before him, and so find the root of the matter in him?

Побійтесь меча, тому що меч є месником за неправди, і знайте, що є суд.	Do ye also beware of deceit: for wrath will come upon transgressors; and then shall they know where their substance is.
Глава 20	Chapter 20

І відповів Софар наамитянин і сказав:	Then Sophar the Minæan answered and said,

розмірковування мої спонукують мене відповідати, і я поспішаю висловити їх.	I did not suppose that thou wouldest answer thus: neither do ye understand more than I.

Докір, ганебний для мене, вислухав я, і дух розуміння мого відповість за мене.	I will hear my shameful reproach; and the spirit of my understanding answers me.

Хіба не знаєш ти, що від віку, — з того часу, як поставлена людина на землі, —	Hast thou not known these things of old, from the time that man was set upon the earth?

веселощі беззаконних короткочасні, і радість лицеміра миттєва?	But the mirth of the ungodly is a signal downfall, and the joy of transgressors is destruction:

Хоч би зросла до небес велич його, і голова його торкалася хмар, —	although his gifts should go up to heaven, and his sacrifice reach the clouds.
7	7
як гній його, навіки пропадає він; ті, що бачили його, скажуть: де він?	For when he shall seem to be now established, then he shall utterly perish: and they that knew him shall say, Where is he?
8	8
Як сон, відлетить, і не знайдуть його; і, як нічне видіння, зникне.	Like a dream that has fled away, he shall not be found; and he has fled like a vision of the night.
9	9
Око, що бачило його, більше не побачить його, і вже не дивитиметься на нього місце його.	The eye has looked upon him, but shall not see him again; and his place shall no longer perceive him.
10	10
Сини його будуть запобігати перед жебраками, і руки його повернуть вкрадене ним.	Let his inferiors destroy his children, and let his hands kindle the fire of sorrow.
11	11
Кістки його наповнені гріхами юности його, і з ним ляжуть вони у порох.	His bones have been filled with vigour of his youth, and it shall lie down with him in the dust.
12	12
Якщо солодке в роті його зло, і він таїть його під язиком своїм,	Though evil be sweet in his mouth, though he will hide it under his tongue;

береже і не кидає його, а тримає його у вустах своїх,	though he will not spare it, and will not leave it, but will keep it in the midst of his throat:

то ця їжа його в утробі його перетвориться на жовч аспидів усередині його.	yet he shall not at all be able to help himself; the gall of an asp is in his belly.

Майно, яке він ковтав, виблює: Бог вивергне його із утроби його.	His wealth unjustly collected shall be vomited up; a messenger of wrath shall drag him out of his house.

Зміїну отруту він ссе; умертвить його язик єхидни.	And let him suck the poison of serpents, and let the serpent's tongue slay him.

Не бачити йому струмків, рік, що течуть медом і молоком!	Let him not see the milk of the pastures, nor the supplies of honey and butter.

Нажите трудом поверне, не проковтне; за міркою майна його буде і розплата його, а він не порадіє.	He has laboured unprofitably and in vain, for wealth of which he shall not taste: it is as a lean thing, unfit for food, which he cannot swallow.

Бо він гнітив, відсилав бідних; захоплював доми, яких не будував;	For he has broken down the houses of many mighty men: and he has plundered an habitation, though he built it not.
20	20
не знав ситости в утробі своїй і у жадобі своїй не щадив нічого.	There is no security to his possessions; he shall not be saved by his desire.
21	21
Нічого не спаслося від обжерливости його, зате не встоїть щастя його.	There is nothing remaining of his provisions; therefore his goods shall not flourish.
22	22
У повноті достатку буде тісно йому; всяка рука скривдженого підніметься на нього.	But when he shall seem to be just satisfied, he shall be straitened; and all distress shall come upon him.

Коли буде чим наповнити утробу його, Він пошле на нього лють гніву Свого й буде дощити на нього хвороби в плоті його.	If by any means he would fill his belly, let God send upon him the fury of wrath; let him bring a torrent of pains upon him.

Чи втече він від зброї залізної, — проколе його лук мідний;	And he shall by no means escape from the power of the sword; let the brazen bow wound him.
25	25
стане виймати стрілу, — і вона вийде з тіла, вийде, блискаючи крізь жовч його; жахи смерти найдуть на нього!	And let the arrow pierce through his body; and let the stars be against his dwelling-place: let terrors come upon him.

Все похмуре сховано всередині його; буде пожирати його вогонь, який ніхто не роздмухує; зло осягне і те, що залишилося в наметі його.	And let all darkness wait for him: a fire that burns not out shall consume him; and let a stranger plague his house.

Небо відкриє беззаконня його, і земля повстане проти нього.	And let the heaven reveal his iniquities, and the earth rise up against him.

Зникне надбання дому його; усе розпливеться в день гніву Його.	Let destruction bring his house to an end; let a day of wrath come upon him.

Ось доля людини беззаконної і спадщина, визначена їй Вседержителем!	This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of his goods appointed him by the all-seeing God.
Глава 21	Chapter 21

1	1
І відповів Іов і сказав;	But Job answered and said,

вислухайте уважно слова мої, і це буде мені утіхою від вас.	Hear ye, hear ye my words, that I may not have this consolation from you.
3	3
Потерпіть мене, і я буду говорити; а після того, як скажу, насміхайтеся.	Raise me, and I will speak; then ye shall not laugh me to scorn.
4	4
Хіба до людини слова мої? як же мені і не бути слабкодухим?	What! is my reproof of man? and why should I not be angry?
5	5
Подивіться на мене і вжахніться, і покладіть перст на вуста.	Look upon me, and wonder, laying your hand upon your cheek.
6	6
Лише тільки я згадаю, — здригаюсь, і тремтіння обіймає тіло моє.	For even when I remember, I am alarmed, and pains seize my flesh.
7	7
Чому беззаконні живуть, досягають старости, та й силою міцні?	Wherefore do the ungodly live, and grow old even in wealth?
8	8
Діти їхні з ними перед лицем їх, і онуки їхні перед очима їх.	Their seed is according to their desire, and their children are in their sight.
9	9
Доми їхні безпечні від страху, і немає жезла Божого на них.	Their houses are prosperous, neither have they any where cause for fear, neither is there a scourge from the Lord upon them.
10	10
Віл їх запліднює і не вивергає, корова їх зачинає і не викидає.	Their cow does not cast her calf, and their beast with young is safe, and does not miscarry.
11	11
Як стадо, випускають вони малюків своїх, і діти їхні стрибають.	And they remain as an unfailing flock, and their children play before them, taking up the psaltery and harp;
12	12
Викликують під голос тимпана і цитри і веселяться при звуках сопілки;	and they rejoice at the voice of a song.
13	13
проводять дні свої у щасті і миттєво сходять у пекло.	And they spend their days in wealth, and fall asleep in the rest of the grave.
14	14
А між тим вони говорять Богу: відійди від нас, ми не хочемо знати шляхів Твоїх!	Yet such a man says to the Lord, Depart from me; I desire not to know thy ways.
15	15
Хто такий Вседержитель, щоб нам служити Йому? і яка користь прибігати до Нього?	What is the Mighty One, that we should serve him? and what profit is there that we should approach him?
16	16
Бачиш, щастя їх не від їхніх рук. — Рада нечестивих, будь далекою від мене!	For their good things were in their hands, but he regards not the works of the ungodly.
17	17
Чи часто гасне світильник у беззаконних, і находить на них лихо, і Він дає їм у наділ страждання у гніві Своєму?	Nevertheless, the lamp of the ungodly also shall be put out, and destruction shall come upon them, and pangs of vengeance shall seize them.
18	18
Вони повинні бути, як соломинка перед вітром і як полова, яку розносить вихор.	And they shall be as chaff before the wind, or as dust which the storm has taken up.
19	19
Скажеш: Бог береже для дітей його нещастя його. — Нехай віддасть Він йому самому, щоб він це знав.	Let his substance fail to supply his children: God shall recompense him, and he shall know it.
20	20
Нехай його очі побачать нещастя його, і нехай він сам п’є від гніву Вседержителевого.	Let his eyes see his own destruction, and let him not be saved by the Lord.
21	21
Бо яка йому турбота про дім свій після нього, коли число місяців його закінчиться?	For his desire is in his house with him, and the number of his months has been suddenly cut off.
22	22
Але чи Бога вчити мудрости, коли Він судить і небесних?	Is it not the Lord who teaches understanding and knowledge? and does not he judge murders?

Один помирає в самій повноті сил своїх, зовсім спокійний і мирний;	One shall die in his perfect strength, and wholly at ease and prosperous;
24	24
нутрощі його повні жиру, і кістки його напоєні мозком.	and his inwards are full of fat, and his marrow is diffused throughout him.
25	25
А інший помирає з душею засмученою, не вкусивши добра.	And another dies in bitterness of soul, not eating any good thing.
26	26
І вони разом будуть лежати в поросі, і черва покриє їх.	But they lie down in the earth together, and corruption covers them.
27	27
Знаю я ваші думки і хитрощі, які ви проти мене сплітаєте.	So I know you, that ye presumptuously attack me:
28	28
Ви скажете: де дім князя, і де намет, у якому жили беззаконні?	so that ye will say, Where is the house of the prince? and where is the covering of the tabernacles of the ungodly?

Хіба ви не запитували у подорожніх і незнайомі з їх спостереженнями,	Ask those that go by the way, and do not disown their tokens.
30	30
що у день загибелі пощаджений буває лиходій, у день гніву відводиться убік?	For the wicked hastens to the day of destruction: they shall be led away for the day of his vengeance.
31	31
Хто представить йому перед лице путь його, і хто відплатить йому за те, що він робив?	Who will tell him his way to his face, whereas he has done it? who shall recompense him?

Його проводжають до гробів і на його могилі ставлять варту.	And he has been led away to the tombs, and he has watched over the heaps.

Солодкі для нього брили долини, і за ним іде натовп людей, а тим, що йдуть перед ним, немає числа.	The stones of the valley have been sweet to him, and every man shall depart after him, and there are innumerable ones before him.

Як же ви хочете утішати мене пустим? У ваших відповідях залишається одна неправда.	How then do ye comfort me in vain? whereas I have no rest from your molestation.
Глава 22	Chapter 22

І відповів Елифаз феманитянин і сказав:	Then Eliphaz the Thæmanite answered and said,

хіба може людина приносити користь Богу? Розумний приносить користь собі самому.	Is it not the Lord that teaches understanding and knowledge?
3	3
Яке задоволення Вседержителю від того, що ти праведний? І чи буде Йому вигода від того, що ти тримаєш путі твої у непорочності?	For what matters it to the Lord, if thou wert blameless in thy works? or is it profitable that thou shouldest perfect thy way?
4	4
Невже Він, боячись тебе, вступить з тобою в змагання, піде судитися з тобою?	Wilt thou maintain and plead thine own cause? and will he enter into judgment with thee?
5	5
Певно, злоба твоя велика, і беззаконням твоїм немає кінця.	Is not thy wickedness abundant, and thy sins innumerable?
6	6
Певно, ти брав застави від братів твоїх ні за що і з напівголих знімав одяг.	And thou hast taken security of thy brethren for nothing, and hast taken away the clothing of the naked.
7	7
Стомленому спрагою не подавав води напитися і голодному відмовляв у хлібі;	Neither hast thou given water to the thirsty to drink, but hast taken away the morsel of the hungry.
8	8
а людині сильній ти давав землю, і сановитий оселявся на ній.	And thou hast accepted the persons of some; and thou hast established those that were already settled on the earth.
9	9
Вдів ти відсилав ні з чим і сиріт залишав з порожніми руками.	But thou hast sent widows away empty, and hast afflicted orphans.
10	10
За те навколо тебе петлі, і збурив тебе несподіваний жах,	Therefore snares have compassed thee, and disastrous war has troubled thee.
11	11
або пітьма, в якій ти нічого не бачиш, і великі води покрили тебе.	The light has proved darkness to thee, and water has covered thee on thy lying down.
12	12
Чи не вище небес Бог? подивися вгору на зірки, як вони високо!	Does not he that dwells in the high places observe? and has he not brought down the proud?
13	13
І ти говориш: що знає Бог? чи може Він судити крізь морок?	And thou hast said, What does the Mighty One know? does he judge in the dark?
14	14
Хмари — завіса Його, так що Він не бачить, а ходить тільки по небесному колу.	A cloud is his hiding-place, and he shall not be seen; and he passes through the circle of heaven.
15	15
Невже ти тримаєшся путі древніх, якою йшли люди беззаконні,	Wilt thou not mark the old way, which righteous men have trodden?
16	16
які передчасно були винищені, коли вода розлилася під основу їхню?	who were seized before their time: their foundations are as an overflowing stream.
17	17
Вони говорили Богу: відійди від нас! і що зробить їм Вседержитель?	Who say, What will the Lord do to us? or what will the Almighty bring upon us?
18	18
А Він наповнював доми їхні добром. Але, рада нечестивих, будь далекою від мене!	Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from him.
19	19
Бачили праведники і раділи, і непорочний сміявся:	The righteous have seen it, and laughed, and the blameless one has derided them.
20	20
ворог наш знищений, а те, що залишилося після них, пожер вогонь.	Verily their substance has been utterly destroyed, and the fire shall devour what is left of their property.
21	21
Зблизься ж з Ним — і будеш спокійний; через це прийде до тебе добро.	Be firm, I pray thee, if thou canst endure; then thy fruit shall prosper.
22	22
Прийми з вуст Його закон і поклади слова Його в серце твоє.	And receive a declaration from his mouth, and lay up his words in thine heart.
23	23
Якщо ти звернешся до Вседержителя, то знову влаштуєшся, проженеш беззаконня від намету твого	And if thou shalt turn and humble thyself before the Lord, thou hast thus removed unrighteousness far from thy habitation.
24	24
і будеш вважати за порох блискучий метал, і за камені потоків — золото Офірське.	Thou shalt lay up for thyself treasure in a heap on the rock; and Sophir shall be as the rock of the torrent.
25	25
І буде Вседержитель твоїм золотом і блискучим сріблом у тебе,	So the Almighty shall be thy helper from enemies, and he shall bring thee forth pure as silver that has been tried by fire.
26	26
бо тоді будеш радуватися за Вседержителя і піднімеш до Бога лице твоє.	Then shalt thou have boldness before the Lord, looking up cheerfully to heaven.
27	27
Помолишся Йому, і Він почує тебе, і ти виконаєш обітниці твої.	And he shall hear thee when thou prayest to him, and he shall grant thee power to pay thy vows.
28	28
Покладеш намір, і він здійсниться у тебе, і над путями твоїми буде сяяти світло.	And he shall establish to thee again a habitation of righteousness and there shall be light upon thy paths.
29	29
Коли хто буде принижений, ти скажеш: піднесення! і Він спасе засмученого лицем,	Because thou hast humbled thyself; and thou shalt say, Man has behaved proudly, but he shall save him that is of lowly eyes.
30	30
визволить і невинного, і він спасеться чистотою рук твоїх.	He shall deliver the innocent, and do thou save thyself by thy pure hands.
Глава 23	Chapter 23

1	1
І відповів Іов і сказав:	Then Job answered and said,

ще і нині гіркі слова мої: страждання мої важчі за стогнання моє.	Yea, I know that pleading is out of my reach; and his hand has been made heavy upon my groaning.
3	3
О, якби я знав, де знайти Його, і міг підійти до престолу Його!	Who would then know that I might find him, and come to an end of the matter?
4	4
Я виклав би перед Ним справу мою і вуста мої наповнив би виправданнями;	And I would plead my own cause, and he would fill my mouth with arguments.
5	5
спізнав би слова, якими Він відповість мені, і зрозумів би, що Він скаже мені.	And I would know the remedies which he would speak to me, and I would perceive what he would tell me.
6	6
Невже Він у повній могутності став би змагатися зі мною? О, ні! Нехай Він тільки звернув би увагу на мене.	Though he should come on me in his great strength, then he would not threaten me;
7	7
Тоді праведник міг би змагатися з Ним, — і я назавжди одержав би свободу від Судді мого.	for truth and reproof are from him; and he would bring forth my judgment to an end.
8	8
Але ось, я йду вперед — і нема Його, назад — і не знаходжу Його;	For if I shall go first, and exist no longer, still what do I know concerning the latter end?
9	9
чи робить Він що на лівій стороні, я не бачу; чи ховається на правій, не вбачаю.	When he wrought on the left hand, then I observed it not: his right hand shall encompass me but I shall not see it.
10	10
Але Він знає путь мою; нехай випробує мене, — вийду, як золото.	For he knows already my way; and he has tried me as gold.
11	11
Нога моя твердо тримається стежок Його; путі Його я зберігав і не ухилявся.	And I will go forth according to his commandments, for I have kept his ways; and I shall not turn aside from his commandments,
12	12
Від заповіді вуст Його не відступав; слова вуст Його зберігав більше, ніж мої правила.	neither shall I transgress; but I have hid his words in my bosom.
13	13
Але Він твердий; і хто відхилить Його? Він робить, чого хоче душа Його.	And if too he has thus judged, who is he that has contradicted, for he has both willed a thing and done it.
14
Так, Він виконає те, що належить мені, і подібного до цього багато у Нього.
15	15
Тому я тремчу перед лицем Його; розмірковую — і страшуся Його.	Therefore am I troubled at him; and when I was reproved, I thought of him.
16	16
Бог розслабив серце моє, і Вседержитель налякав мене.	But the Lord has softened my heart, and the Almighty has troubled me.
17	17
Чому я не був знищений раніше цієї темряви, і Він не приховав мороку від лиця мого!	For I knew not that darkness would come upon me, and thick darkness has covered me before my face.
Глава 24	Chapter 24

1	1
Чому не приховані від Вседержителя часи, і ті, що знають Його, не бачать днів Його?	But why have the seasons been hidden from the Lord,
2	2
Межі пересувають, викрадають стада і пасуть у себе.	while the ungodly have passed over the bound, carrying off the flock with the shepherd?
3	3
У сиріт відбирають осла, у вдови беруть у заставу вола;	They have led away the ass of the fatherless, and taken the widow's ox for a pledge.
4	4
бідних зіштовхують з дороги, всі принижені землі примушені ховатися.	They have turned aside the weak from the right way: and the meek of the earth have hidden themselves together.
5	5
Ось вони, як дикі осли в пустелі, виходять на справу свою, встаючи рано на здобич; степ дає хліб для них і для дітей їхніх;	And they have departed like asses in the field, having gone forth on my account according to their own order: his bread is sweet to his little ones.

жнуть вони на полі не своєму і збирають виноград у нечестивця;	They have reaped a field that was not their own before the time: the poor have laboured in the vineyards of the ungodly without pay and without food.
7	7
нагі ночують без покрова і без одягу на холоді;	They have caused many naked to sleep without clothes, and they have taken away the covering of their body.
8	8
мокнуть від гірських дощів і, не маючи притулку, тиснуться до скелі;	They are wet with the drops of the mountains: they have embraced the rock, because they had no shelter.
9	9
відривають від грудей сироту і з убогого беруть заставу;	They have snatched the fatherless from the breast, and have afflicted the outcast.
10	10
змушують ходити нагими, без одягу, і голодних годують колоссям;	And they have wrongfully caused others to sleep without clothing, and taken away the morsel of the hungry.

між стінами вичавлюють олію оливкову, топчуть у точилах і жадають.	They have unrighteously laid wait in narrow places, and have not known the righteous way.
12	12
У містах люди стогнуть, і душа тих, кого убивають, волає, і Бог не забороняє того.	Who have cast forth the poor from the city and their own houses, and the soul of the children has groaned aloud.
13	13
Є з них вороги світла, не знають путі його і не ходять стежками його.	Why then has he not visited these? forasmuch as they were upon the earth, and took no notice, and they knew not the way of righteousness, neither have they walked in their appointed paths?

Зі світанком встає вбивця, умертвляє бідного й убогого, а вночі буває злодієм.	But having known their works, he delivered them into darkness: and in the night one will be as a thief:

І око перелюбника чекає сутінків, говорячи: нічиє око не побачить мене, — і закриває лице.	and the eye of the adulterer has watched for the darkness, saying, Eye shall not perceive me, and he puts a covering on his face.
16	16
У темряві підкопуються під доми, які вдень вони помітили для себе; не знають світла.	In darkness he digs through houses: by day they conceal themselves securely: they know not the light.
17	17
Бо для них ранок — смертна тінь, оскільки вони знайомі з жахами смертної тіні.	For the morning is to them all as the shadow of death, for each will be conscious of the terror of the shadow of death.

Легкий такий на поверхні води, проклята частка його на землі, і не дивиться він на дорогу садів виноградних.	He is swift on the face of the water: let his portion be cursed on the earth; and let their plants be laid bare.

Засуха і спека поглинають снігову воду: так пекло — грішників.	Let them be withered upon the earth; for they have plundered the sheaves of the fatherless.

Нехай забуде його утроба матері, нехай ласує ним хробак; нехай не залишається про нього пам’яті; як дерево, нехай зломиться беззаконник,	Then is his sin brought to remembrance, and he vanishes like a vapour of dew: but let what he has done be recompensed to him, and let every unrighteous one be crushed like rotten wood.

який гнітить бездітну, що не народжувала, і вдові не робить добра.	For he has not treated the barren woman well, and has had no pity on a feeble woman.

Він і сильних захоплює своєю силою; він устає, і ніхто не упевнений за життя своє.	And in wrath he has overthrown the helpless: therefore when he has arisen, a man will not feel secure of his own life.

А Він дає йому все для безпеки, і він на те спирається, і очі Його бачать шляхи їхні.	When he has fallen sick, let him not hope to recover: but let him perish by disease.

Піднялися високо, — і ось, нема їх; падають і вмирають, як і всі, і, як верхівки колосся, зрізуються.	For his exaltation has hurt many; but he has withered as mallows in the heat, or as an ear of corn falling off of itself from the stalk.

Якщо це не так, — хто викриє мене у неправді й на ніщо оберне мову мою?	But if not, who is he that says I speak falsely, and will make my words of no account?
Глава 25	Chapter 25

І відповів Вилдад савхеянин і сказав:	Then Baldad the Sauchite answered and said,

влада і страх у Нього; Він творить мир на висотах Своїх!	What beginning or fear is his—even he that makes all things in the highest?

Чи є рахунок воїнствам Його? і над ким не сходить світло Його?	For let none think that there is a respite for robbers: and upon whom will there not come a snare from him?

І як людині бути правою перед Богом, і як бути чистим народженому жінкою?	For how shall a mortal be just before the Lord? or who that is born of a woman shall purify himself?
5	5
Ось навіть місяць, і той несвітлий, і зірки нечисті перед очима Його.	If he gives an order to the moon, then it shines not; and the stars are not pure before him.

Тим менше людина, яка є червою, і син людський, який є міллю.	But alas! man is corruption, and the son of man a worm.
Глава 26	Chapter 26

І відповів Іов і сказав:	But Job answered and said,

як ти допоміг безсилому, підтримав силу немічного!	To whom dost thou attach thyself, or whom art thou going to assist? is it not he that has much strength, and he who has a strong arm?

Яку пораду подав ти немудрому і як у всій повноті пояснив справу!	To whom hast thou given counsel? is it not to him who has all wisdom? whom wilt thou follow? is it not one who has the greatest power?

Кому ти говорив ці слова, і чий дух виходив з тебе?	To whom hast thou uttered words? and whose breath is it that has come forth from thee?

Рефаїми тремтять під водами, і ті, що живуть у них.	Shall giants be born from under the water and the inhabitants thereof?

Пекло оголене перед Ним, і немає покривала Аваддону.	Hell is naked before him, and destruction has no covering.

Він розпростер північ над порожнечою, повісив землю ні на чому.	He stretches out the north wind upon nothing, and he upon nothing hangs the earth;

Він тримає води в хмарах Своїх, і хмара не розпадається під ними.	binding water in his clouds, and the cloud is not rent under it.
9	9
Він поставив престіл Свій, розпростер над ним хмару Свою.	He keeps back the face of his throne, stretching out his cloud upon it.
10	10
Межу провів над поверхнею води, до кордонів світла з темрявою.	He has encompassed the face of the water by an appointed ordinance, until the end of light and darkness.
11	11
Стовпи небес тремтять і жахаються від грози Його.	The pillars of heaven are prostrate and astonished at his rebuke.
12	12
Силою Своєю хвилює море і розумом Своїм уражає його гордощі.	He has calmed the sea with his might, and by his wisdom the whale has been overthrown.
13	13
Від духу Його — велич неба; рука Його утворила швидкого скорпіона.	And the barriers of heaven fear him, and by a command he has slain the apostate dragon.
14	14
Ось, це частини путі Його; і як мало ми чули про Нього! А грім могутности Його хто може зрозуміти?	Behold, these are parts of his way; and we will hearken to him at the least intimation of his word: but the strength of his thunder who knows, when he shall employ it?
Глава 27	Chapter 27

І продовжував Іов піднесену промову свою і сказав:	And Job further continued and said in his parable,

живий Бог, Який позбавив мене суду, і Вседержитель, Який засмутив душу мою,	As God lives, who has thus judged me; and the Almighty, who has embittered my soul;
3	3
бо, доки ще дихання моє в мені і дух Божий у ніздрях моїх,	verily, while my breath is yet in me, and the breath of God which remains to me is in my nostrils,
4	4
не скажуть вуста мої неправди, і язик мій не вимовить лжі!	my lips shall not speak evil words, neither shall my soul meditate unrighteous thoughts.
5	5
Далекий я від того, щоб визнати вас справедливими; доки не помру, не уступлю непорочности моєї.	Far be it from me that I should justify you till I die; for I will not let go my innocence,

Міцно тримав я правду мою і не відпущу її; не докорить мені серце моє в усі дні мої.	but keeping fast to my righteousness I will by no means let it go: for I am not conscious to myself of having done any thing amiss.

Ворог мій буде, як нечестивець, і той, хто повстає на мене, як беззаконник.	Nay rather, but let mine enemies be as the overthrow of the ungodly, and they that rise up against me, as the destruction of transgressors.

Бо яка надія лицемірові, коли візьме, коли вивергне Бог душу його?	For what is the hope of the ungodly, that he holds to it? will he indeed trust in the Lord and be saved?

Чи почує Бог крик його, коли прийде на нього лихо?	Will God hear his prayer? or, when distress has come upon him,

Чи буде він утішатися Вседержителем і закликати Бога повсякчас?	has he any confidence before him? or will God hear him as he calls upon him?

Сповіщу вам, що? у руці Божій; що? у Вседержителя, не приховаю.	Yet now I will tell you what is in the hand of the Lord: I will not lie concerning the things which are with the Almighty.
12	12
Ось, усі ви і самі бачили; і для чого ви стільки пустословите?	Behold, ye all know that ye are adding vanity to vanity.
13	13
Ось доля беззаконній людині від Бога, і спадщина, яку одержують від Вседержителя гнобителі.	This is the portion of an ungodly man from the Lord, and the possession of oppressors shall come upon them from the Almighty.
14	14
Якщо примножуються сини його, то під меч; і нащадки його не наситяться хлібом.	And if their children be many, they shall be for slaughter: and if they grow up, they shall beg.
15	15
Тих, що залишилися після нього, смерть зведе в гріб, і вдови їхні не будуть плакати.	And they that survive of him shall utterly perish, and no one shall pity their widows.
16	16
Якщо він набере купи срібла, як пороху, і наготує одягу, як глини,	Even if he should gather silver as earth, and prepare gold as clay;
17	17
то він наготує, а вдягатися буде праведник, і срібло одержить собі в частку непорочний.	all these things shall the righteous gain, and the truehearted shall possess his wealth.
18	18
Він будує, як міль, дім свій і, як сторож, робить собі курінь;	And his house is gone like moths, and like a spider's web.
19	19
лягає спати багатієм і таким не встане; відкриває очі свої, і він уже не той.	The rich man shall lie down, and shall not continue: he has opened his eyes, and he is not.
20	20
Як води, осягнуть його жахи; в ночі викраде його буря.	Pains have come upon him as water, and darkness has carried him away by night.
21	21
Підніме його східний вітер і понесе, і він швидко побіжить від нього.	And a burning wind shall catch him, and he shall depart, and it shall utterly drive him out of his place.
22	22
Накинеться на нього і не пощадить, як би він не намагався втекти від руки його.	And God shall cast trouble upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.
23	23
Сплеснуть про нього руками і засвистять над ним з місця його!	He shall cause men to clap their hands against them, and shall hiss him out of his place.
Глава 28	Chapter 28

Так! у срібла є джерельна жила, й у золота місце, де його плавлять.	For there is a place for the silver, whence it comes, and a place for the gold, whence it is refined.
2	2
Залізо виробляється із землі; з каменю виплавляється мідь.	For iron comes out of the earth, and brass is hewn out like stone.
3	3
Людина кладе межу темряві і ретельно розшукує камінь у мороці і тіні смертній.	He has set a bound to darkness, and he searches out every limit: a stone is darkness, and the shadow of death.
4	4
Виконують рудокопний колодязь у місцях, де не ступала нога, спускаються в глибину, висять і колишуться далеко від людей.	There is a cutting off of the torrent by reason of dust: so they that forget the right way are weakened; they are removed from among men.
5	5
Земля, на якій виростає хліб, всередині розрита, неначе вогнем.	As for the earth, out of it shall come bread: under it has been turned up as it were fire.
6	6
Камені її — місце сапфіра, і в ній піщинки золота.	Her stones are the place of the sapphire: and her dust supplies man with gold.
7	7
Стежки туди не знає хижий птах, і не бачило її око шуліки;	There is a path, the fowl has not known it, neither has the eye of the vulture seen it:
8	8
не топтали її скимни, і не ходив по ній шакал.	neither have the sons of the proud trodden it, a lion has not passed upon it.
9	9
На граніт накладає вона (людина) руку свою, з коренем перевертає гори;	He has stretched forth his hand on the sharp rock, and turned up mountains by the roots:
10	10
у скелях просікає канали, і все дорогоцінне бачить око її;	and he has interrupted the whirlpools of rivers, and mine eye has seen every precious thing.
11	11
зупиняє плин потоків і таємне виносить на світло.	And he has laid bare the depths of rivers, and has brought his power to light.
12	12
Але де премудрість знаходиться? і де місце розуму?	But whence has wisdom been discovered? and what is the place of knowledge?
13	13
Не знає людина ціни її, і вона не знаходиться на землі живих.	A mortal has not known its way, neither indeed has it been discovered among men.
14	14
Безодня говорить: не у мені вона; і море говорить: не в мене.	The depth said, It is not in me: and the sea said, It is not with me.
15	15
Не дається вона за золото і не здобувається вона за вагу срібла;	One shall not give fine gold instead of it, neither shall silver be weighed in exchange for it.
16	16
не оцінюється вона золотом офірським, ні дорогоцінним оніксом, ні сапфіром;	Neither shall it be compared with gold of Sophir, with the precious onyx and sapphire.
17	17
не зрівнюється з нею золото і кристал, і не виміняєш її на сосуди з чистого золота.	Gold and crystal shall not be equalled to it, neither shall vessels of gold be its exchange.
18	18
А про корали і перли і згадувати нема чого, і придбання премудрости вище за рубіни.	Coral and fine pearl shall not be mentioned: but do thou esteem wisdom above the most precious things.
19	19
Не зрівнюється з нею топаз ефіопський; чистим золотом не оцінюється вона.	The topaz of Ethiopia shall not be equalled to it; it shall not be compared with pure gold.
20	20
Звідки ж виходить премудрість? і де місце розуму?	Whence then is wisdom found? and of what kind is the place of understanding?
21	21
Прихована вона від очей усього живого і від птахів небесних утаємничена.	It has escaped the notice of every man, and has been hidden from the birds of the sky.

Аваддон і смерть говорять: вухами нашими чули ми чутку про неї.	Destruction and Death said, We have heard the report of it.

Бог знає путь її, і Він відає місце її.	God has well ordered the way of it, and he knows the place of it.
24	24
Бо Він проглядає до кінців землі і бачить під усім небом.	For he surveys the whole earth under heaven, knowing the things in the earth:

Коли Він вітрові визначав вагу і воді надавав міру,	all that he has made; the weight of the winds, the measures of the water.
26	26
коли призначав закон дощу і путь для блискавки громоносної,	When he made them, thus he saw and numbered them, and made a way for the pealing of the thunder.

тоді Він бачив її і явив її, приготував її і ще випробував її	Then he saw it, and declared it: he prepared it and traced it out.
28	28
і сказав людині: ось, страх Господній є істинна премудрість, і віддалення від зла — розум.	And he said to man, Behold, godliness is wisdom; and to abstain from evil is understanding.
Глава 29	Chapter 29

І продовжував Іов піднесену промову свою і сказав:	And Job continued and said in his parable,

о, якби я був, як у минулі місяці, як у ті дні, коли Бог зберігав мене,	Oh that I were as in months past, wherein God preserved me!
3	3
коли світильник Його світив над головою моєю, і я при світлі Його ходив серед пітьми;	As when his lamp shone over my head; when by his light I walked through darkness.
4	4
як був я у дні молодости моєї, коли милість Божа була над наметом моїм,	As when I steadfastly pursued my ways, when God took care of my house.
5	5
коли ще Вседержитель був зі мною, і діти мої навколо мене,	When I was very fruitful, and my children were about me;
6	6
коли путі мої обливалися молоком, і скеля виточувала для мене струмки єлею!	when my ways were moistened with butter, and the mountains flowed for me with milk.
7	7
коли я виходив до воріт міста і на площі ставив сідалище своє, —	When I went forth early in the city, and the seat was placed for me in the streets.
8	8
юнаки, побачивши мене, ховалися, а старці вставали і стояли;	The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and all the old men stood up.
9	9
князі утримувалися від розмови і персти клали на вуста свої;	And the great men ceased speaking, and laid their finger on their mouth.
10	10
голос знатних умовкав, і язик їх прилипав до гортані їх.	And they that heard me blessed me, and their tongue clave to their throat.
11	11
Вухо, яке чуло мене, ублажало мене; око, яке бачило, величало мене,	For the ear heard, and blessed me; and the eye saw me, and turned aside.
12	12
тому що я рятував страдника, який волав, і сироту безпомічного.	For I saved the poor out of the hand of the oppressor, and helped the fatherless who had no helper.
13	13
Благословення того, хто гинув, сходило на мене, і серцю вдови давав я радість.	Let the blessing of the perishing one come upon me; yea, the mouth of the widow has blessed me.
14	14
Я одягався у правду, і суд мій прикрашав мене, як мантія й вінець.	Also I put on righteousness, and clothed myself with judgment like a mantle.
15	15
Я був очима сліпому і ногами кульгавому;	I was the eye of the blind, and the foot of the lame.
16	16
батьком був я для убогих і позов, якого я не знав, розбирав уважно.	I was the father of the helpless; and I searched out the cause which I knew not.
17	17
Розтрощував я беззаконному щелепи і з зубів його виривав украдене.	And I broke the jaw-teeth of the unrighteous; I plucked the spoil out of the midst of their teeth.
18	18
І говорив я: у гнізді моєму помру, і дні мої будуть численні, як пісок;	And I said, My age shall continue as the stem of a palm-tree; I shall live a long while.
19	19
корінь мій відкритий для води, і роса ночує на гілках моїх;	My root was spread out by the water, and the dew would lodge on my crop.
20	20
слава моя не старіє, лук мій міцний у руці моїй.	My glory was fresh in me, and my bow prospered in his hand.
21	21
Слухали мене й очікували, і мовчали при пораді моїй.	Men heard me, and gave heed, and they were silent at my counsel.
22	22
Після слів моїх уже не розмірковували; слова мої капали на них.	At my word they spoke not again, and they were very glad whenever I spoke to them.
23	23
Чекали на мене, як на дощ, і, як дощу пізньому, відкривали вуста свої.	As the thirsty earth expecting the rain, so they waited for my speech.
24	24
Бувало, усміхнуся їм — вони не вірять; і світлого лиця мого вони не затьмарювали.	Were I to laugh on them, they would not believe it; and the light of my face has not failed.
25	25
Я призначав путі їм і сидів на чолі і жив, як цар у колі воїнів, як утішитель тих, хто плаче.	I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the midst of warriors, as one comforting mourners.
Глава 30	Chapter 30

1	1
А нині сміються з мене молодші за мене літами, ті, батьків яких я не погодився б помістити з псами стад моїх.	But now the youngest have laughed me to scorn, now they reprove me in their turn, whose fathers I set at nought; whom I did not deem worthy to be with my shepherd dogs.
2	2
І сила рук їх до чого мені? Над ними вже минув час.	Yea, why had I the strength of their hands? for them the full term of life was lost.
3	3
Бідністю і голодом виснажені, вони тікають у степ безводний, похмурий і спустошений;	One is childless in want and famine, such as they that fled but lately the distress and misery of drought.
4	4
щипають зелень біля кущів, і ягоди ялівцю — хліб їх.	Who compass the salt places on the sounding shore, who had salt herbs for their food, and were dishonourable and of no repute, in want of every good thing; who also ate roots of trees by reason of great hunger.

Із суспільства виганяють їх, кричать на них, як на злодіїв,	Thieves have risen up against me,
6	6
щоб жили вони у вибоїнах потоків, в ущелинах землі і скелях.	whose houses were the caves of the rocks, who lived under the wild shrubs.

Ревуть між кущами, туляться під терням.	They will cry out among the rustling bushes.
8	8
Люди знедолені, люди без імені, непотріб землі!	They are sons of fools and vile men, whose name and glory are quenched from off the earth.

Їх-то зробився я нині піснею і їжею розмов їхніх.	But now I am their music, and they have me for a by-word.
10	10
Вони гребують мною, віддаляються від мене і не утримуються плювати перед лицем моїм.	And they stood aloof and abhorred me, and spared not to spit in my face.
11	11
Оскільки Він розв’язав повід мій і вразив мене, то вони скинули з себе вузду перед лицем моїм.	For he has opened his quiver and afflicted me: they also have cast off the restraint of my presence.
12	12
З правого боку встає цей непотріб, збиває мене з ніг, направляє згубні свої шляхи до мене.	They have risen up against me on the right hand of their offspring; they have stretched out their foot, and directed against me the ways of their destruction.
13	13
А мою стежку зіпсували: все встигли зробити для моєї погибелі, не маючи помічника.	My paths are ruined; for they have stripped off my raiment: he has shot at me with his weapons.
14	14
Вони прийшли до мене, як крізь широкий пролом; з шумом кинулися на мене.	And he has pleaded against me as he will: I am overwhelmed with pains.
15	15
Жахи напали на мене; як вітер, розвіялася велич моя, і щастя моє зникло, як хмара.	My pains return upon me; my hope is gone like the wind, and my safety as a cloud.

І нині знемагає душа моя в мені: дні скорботи огорнули мене.	Even now my life shall be poured forth upon me; and days of anguish seize me.

Уночі ниють у мені кістки мої, і жили мої не мають спокою.	And by night my bones are confounded; and my sinews are relaxed.

Насилу знімається з мене одяг мій; краї хітона мого тиснуть мене.	With great force my disease has taken hold of my garment: it has compassed me as the collar of my coat.

Він кинув мене у бруд, і я став, як порох і попіл.	And thou hast counted me as clay; my portion is in dust and ashes.
20	20
Я взиваю до Тебе, і Ти не слухаєш мене, — стою, а Ти тільки дивишся на мене.	And I have cried to thee, but thou hearest me not: but they stood still, and observed me.
21	21
Ти зробився жорстоким до мене, кріпкою рукою ворогуєш проти мене.	They attacked me also without mercy: thou hast scourged me with a strong hand.
22	22
Ти підняв мене і змусив мене літати з вітром і розтрощуєш мене.	And thou hast put me to grief, and hast cast me away from safety.

Так, я знаю, що Ти приведеш мене до смерти й у дім зібрання усіх, хто живе.	For I know that death will destroy me: for the earth is the house appointed for every mortal.

Певно, Він не простягне руки Своєї на дім кісток: чи будуть вони кричати під час свого руйнування?	Oh then that I might lay hands upon myself, or at least ask another, and he should do this for me.

Чи не плакав я про того, хто був у горі? чи не уболівала душа моя за бідних?	Yet I wept over every helpless man; I groaned when I saw a man in distress.

Коли я сподівався добра, прийшло зло; коли очікував світла, прийшла пітьма.	But I, when I waited for good things, behold, days of evils came the more upon me.

Мої нутрощі киплять і не перестають; зустріли мене дні печалі.	My belly boiled, and would not cease: the days of poverty prevented me.

Я ходжу почорнілий, але не від сонця; встаю у зібранні і кричу.	I went mourning without restraint: and I have stood and cried out in the assembly.

Я став братом шакалам і другом страусам.	I am become a brother of monsters, and a companion of ostriches.

Моя шкіра почорніла на мені, кістки мої обгоріли від спеки.	And my skin has been greatly blackened, and my bones are burned with heat.

І цитра моя зробилася сумною, і сопілка моя ридає.	My harp also has been turned into mourning, and my song into my weeping.
Глава 31	Chapter 31

Завіт уклав я з очима моїми, щоб не помишляти мені про дівчину.	I made a covenant with mine eyes, and I will not think upon a virgin.
2	2
Яка ж доля мені від Бога з висоти? І яка спадщина від Вседержителя з небес?	Now what portion has God given from above? and is there an inheritance given of the Mighty One from the highest?
3	3
Чи не для нечестивого загибель, і чи не для того, хто робить зло, напасть?	Alas! destruction to the unrighteous, and rejection to them that do iniquity.
4	4
Чи не бачив Він шляхів моїх, і чи не рахував усіх моїх кроків?	Will he not see my way, and number all my steps?
5	5
Якщо я ходив у суєті, і якщо нога моя поспішала на лукавство; —	But if I had gone with scorners, and if too my foot has hasted to deceit:

нехай зважать мене на терезах правди, і Бог дізнається про мою непорочність.	(for I am weighed in a just balance, and the Lord knows my innocence:)

Якщо стопи мої ухилилися від шляху і серце моє ходило слідом за очима моїми, і якщо що-небудь нечисте пристало до рук моїх,	if my foot has turned aside out of the way, or if mine heart has followed mine eye, and if too I have touched gifts with my hands;

то нехай я сію, а інший їсть, і нехай паростки мої будуть викорінені.	then let me sow, and let others eat; and let me be uprooted on the earth.
9	9
Якщо серце моє захоплювалося жінкою і я чинив підступи біля дверей мого ближнього, —	If my heart has gone forth after another man's wife, and if I laid wait at her doors;
10	10
нехай моя дружина меле на іншого, і нехай інші знущаються з неї,	then let my wife also please another, and let my children be brought low.
11	11
тому що це — злочин, це — беззаконня, що підлягає суду;	For the rage of anger is not to be controlled, in the case of defiling another man's wife.
12	12
це — вогонь, який з’їдає до знищення, який викорінив би все добро моє.	For it is a fire burning on every side, and whomsoever it attacks, it utterly destroys.
13	13
Якщо я зневажав права слуги і служниці моєї, коли вони мали суперечку зі мною,	And if too I despised the judgment of my servant or my handmaid, when they pleaded with me;
14	14
то що став би я робити, коли Бог повстав би? І коли б Він глянув на мене, що міг би я відповісти Йому?	what then shall I do if the Lord should try me? and if also he should at all visit me, can I make an answer?
15	15
Чи не Він, Який створив мене в утробі, створив і його й однаково утворив нас в утробі?	Were not they too formed as I also was formed in the womb? yea, we were formed in the same womb.
16	16
Чи відмовляв я нужденним у їх проханні і чи томив очі вдови?	But the helpless missed not whatever need they had, and I did not cause the eye of the widow to fail.
17	17
Чи один я з’їдав шматок мій, і чи не їв від нього і сирота?	And if too I ate my morsel alone, and did not impart of it to the orphan;
18	18
Бо з дитинства він зростав зі мною, як з батьком, і від утроби матері моєї я піклувався про вдову.	(for I nourished them as a father from my youth, and guided them from my mother's womb.)

Якщо я бачив кого, хто гинув без одягу, і бідного без покрова, —	And if too I overlooked the naked as he was perishing, and did not clothe him;
20	20
чи не благословляли мене стегна його, і чи не був він зігрітий вовною овець моїх?	and if the poor did not bless me, and their shoulders were not warmed with the fleece of my lambs;
21	21
Якщо я піднімав руку мою на сироту, коли бачив допомогу собі біля воріт,	if I lifted my hand against an orphan, trusting that my strength was far superior to his:

то нехай плече моє відпаде від спини, і рука моя нехай відламається від ліктя,	let then my shoulder start from the blade-bone, and my arm be crushed off from the elbow.

тому що страшне для мене покарання від Бога: перед величчю Його не устояв би я.	For the fear of the Lord constrained me, and I cannot bear up by reason of his burden.

Чи покладав я на золоті опору мою і чи говорив скарбу: ти — надія моя?	If I made gold my treasure, and if too I trusted the precious stone;

Чи радів я, що багатство моє було великим, і коли рука моя придбала багато?	and if too I rejoiced when my wealth was abundant, and if too I laid my hand on innumerable treasures:

Дивлячись на сонце, як воно сяє, і на місяць, як він велично прямує,	(do we not see the shining sun eclipsed, and the moon waning? for they have not power to continue:)

чи спокусився я в таїні серця мого, і чи цілували вуста мої руку мою?	and if my heart was secretly deceived, and if I have laid my hand upon my mouth and kissed it:

Це також був би злочин, що підлягає суду, тому що я відрікся б тоді від Бога Всевишнього.	let this also then be reckoned to me as the greatest iniquity: for I should have lied against the Lord Most High.

Чи радів я погибелі ворога мого і чи торжествував, коли нещастя осягало його?	And if too I was glad at the fall of mine enemies, and mine heart said, Aha!

Не дозволяв я вустам моїм грішити прокляттям душі його.	let then mine ear hear my curse, and let me be a by-word among my people in my affliction.

Чи не говорили люди намету мого: о, якби ми м’ясом його не наситилися?	And if too my handmaids have often said, Oh that we might be satisfied with his flesh; (whereas I was very kind:

Подорожній не ночував на вулиці; двері мої я відчиняв перехожому.	for the stranger did not lodge without, and my door was opened to every one that came:)

Якби я ховав провини мої, як людина, приховуючи в грудях моїх пороки мої,	or if too having sinned unintentionally, I hid my sin;

то я боявся б великої громади, і презирство одноплемінників страшило б мене, і я мовчав би і не виходив би за двері.	(for I did not stand in awe of a great multitude, so as not to declare boldly before them:) and if too I permitted a poor man to go out of my door with an empty bosom:

О, якби хто вислухав мене! Ось моє бажання, щоб Вседержитель відповів мені, і щоб захисник мій зробив запис.	(Oh that I had a hearer,) and if I had not feared the hand of the Lord; and as to the written charge which I had against any one,

Я носив би його на плечах моїх і покладав би його, як вінець;	I would place it as a chaplet on my shoulders, and read it.

оголосив би йому число кроків моїх, зблизився б з ним, як із князем.	And if I did not read it and return it, having taken nothing from the debtor:

Якщо волала проти мене земля моя і скаржилися на мене борозни її;	If at any time the land groaned against me, and if its furrows mourned together;

якщо я їв плоди її без оплати й обтяжував життя хліборобів,	and if I ate its strength alone without price, and if too I grieved the heart of the owner of the soil, by taking aught from him:

то нехай замість пшениці виростає осот і замість ячменя кукіль. Слова Іова скінчилися.	then let the nettle come up to me instead of wheat, and a bramble instead of barley. And Job ceased speaking.
Глава 32	Chapter 32

Коли ті три мужі перестали відповідати Іову, тому що він був правий в очах своїх,	And his three friends also ceased any longer to answer Job: for Job was righteous before them.

тоді запалав гнів Елиуя, сина Варахиїлового, вузитянина з племені Рамового: запалав гнів його на Іова за те, що він виправдовував себе більше, ніж Бога,	Then Elius the son of Barachiel, the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram, of the country of Ausis, was angered: and he was very angry with Job, because he justified himself before the Lord.

а на трьох друзів його запалав гнів його за те, що вони не знайшли, що відповісти, а тим часом звинувачували Іова.	And he was also very angry with his three friends, because they were not able to return answers to Job, yet set him down for an ungodly man.

Елиуй чекав, поки Іов говорив, тому що вони літами були старші за нього.	But Elius had forborne to give an answer to Job, because they were older than he.

Коли ж Елиуй побачив, що немає відповіді з вуст тих трьох мужів, тоді запалав гнів його.	And Elius saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men; and he was angered in his wrath.

І відповів Елиуй, син Варахиїлів, вузитянин, і сказав: я молодий літами, а ви — старці; тому я ніяковів і боявся оголошувати вам свою думку.	And Elius the Buzite the son of Barachiel answered and said, I am younger in age, and ye are elder; wherefore I kept silence, fearing to declare to you my own knowledge.

Я говорив сам собі: нехай говорять дні, і багатоліття повчає мудрости.	And I said, It is not time that speaks, though in many years men know wisdom:

Але дух у людині і подих Вседержителя дає їй розуміння.	but there is a spirit in mortals; and the inspiration of the Almighty is that which teaches.

Не багаторічні тільки мудрі, і не старі розуміють правду.	The long-lived are not wise as such; neither do the aged know judgment.
10	10
Тому я говорю: вислухайте мене, оголошу вам мою думку і я.	Wherefore I said, Hear me, and I will tell you what I know.

Ось, я очікував слів ваших, — вслуховувався в судження ваші, доки ви придумували, що? сказати.	Hearken to my words; for I will speak in your hearing, until ye shall have tried the matter with words:

Я пильно дивився на вас, і ось ніхто з вас не викриває Іова і не відповідає на слова його.	and I shall understand as far as you; and, behold, there was no one of you that answered Job his words in argument,

Не скажіть: ми знайшли мудрість: Бог спростує його, а не людина.	lest ye should say, We have found that we have added wisdom to the Lord.

Якби він звертав слова свої до мене, то я не вашими словами відповідав би йому.	And ye have commissioned a man to speak such words.
15	15
Злякалися, не відповідають більше; перестали говорити.	They were afraid, they answered no longer; they gave up their speaking.

І як я чекав, а вони не говорять, зупинилися і не відповідають більше,	I waited, (for I had not spoken,) because they stood still, they answered not.

то я відповім з мого боку, висловлю мою думку і я,	And Elius continued, and said, I will again speak,

бо я переповнений словами, і дух у мені розпирає мене.	for I am full of words, for the spirit of my belly destroys me.
19	19
Ось, утроба моя, як вино невідкрите: вона готова прорватися, подібно до нових міхів.	And my belly is as a skin of sweet wine bound up and ready to burst; or as a brazier's labouring bellows.
20	20
Виговорюсь, і буде легше мені; відкрию вуста мої і відповім.	I will speak, that I may open my lips and relieve myself.
21	21
На лице людини дивитися не буду і ніякій людині лестити не стану,	For truly I will not be awed because of man, nor indeed will I be confounded before a mortal.

тому що я не вмію лестити: зараз убий мене, Творче мій.	For I know not how to respect persons: and if otherwise, even the moths would eat me.
Глава 33	Chapter 33

Отже, слухай, Іове, промову мою і прислухайся до кожного слова мого.	Howbeit hear, Job, my words, and hearken to my speech.

Ось, я відкриваю вуста мої, язик мій говорить у гортані моїй.	For behold, I have opened my mouth, and my tongue has spoken.
3	3
Слова мої від щирости мого серця, і вуста мої вимовлять знання чисте.	My heart shall be found pure by my words; and the understanding of my lips shall meditate purity.

Дух Божий створив мене, і подих Вседержителя дав мені життя.	The Divine Spirit is that which formed me, and the breath of the Almighty that which teaches me.

Якщо можеш, відповідай мені і стань переді мною.	If thou canst, give me an answer: wait therefore; stand against me, and I will stand against thee.

Ось я, за бажанням твоїм, замість Бога. Я створений також із пороху;	Thou art formed out of the clay as also I: we have been formed out of the same substance.

тому страх переді мною не може знітити тебе, і рука моя не буде важкою для тебе.	My fear shall not terrify thee, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.

Ти говорив у вуха мої, і я чув звук слів:	But thou hast said in mine ears, (I have heard the voice of thy words;) because thou sayest, I am pure, not having sinned;

чистий я, без пороку, невинний я, і немає в мені неправди;	I am blameless, for I have not transgressed.

а Він знайшов звинувачення проти мене і вважає мене Своїм супротивником;	Yet he has discovered a charge against me, and he has reckoned me as an adversary.

поставив ноги мої в колоду, спостерігає за всіма путями моїми.	And he has put my foot in the stocks, and has watched all my ways.
12	12
Ось у цьому ти неправий, відповідаю тобі, тому що Бог вище людини.	For how sayest thou, I am righteous, yet he has not hearkened to me? for he that is above mortals is eternal.
13	13
Для чого тобі змагатися з Ним? Він не дає звіту ні в яких ділах Своїх.	But thou sayest, Why has he not heard every word of my cause?
14	14
Бог говорить один раз і, якщо того не помітять, удруге:	For when the Lord speaks once, or a second time,

уві сні, у нічному видінні, коли сон находить на людей, під час дрімоти на постелі.	sending a dream, or in the meditation of the night; (as when a dreadful alarm happens to fall upon men, in slumberings on the bed:)

Тоді Він відкриває в людини вухо і закарбовує Своє наставляння,	then opens he the understanding of men: he scares them with such fearful visions:

щоб відвести людину від якого-небудь наміру і віддалити від неї гордість,	to turn a man from unrighteousness, and he delivers his body from a fall.

щоб відвести душу її від прірви і життя її від ураження мечем.	He spares also his soul from death, and suffers him not to fall in war.

Або він врозумляється хворобою на постелі своїй і тяжким болем у всіх кістках своїх, —	And again, he chastens him with sickness on his bed, and the multitude of his bones is benumbed.
20	20
і життя її відвертається від хліба і душа її від улюбленої їжі.	And he shall not be able to take any food, though his soul shall desire meat;
21	21
Плоть на ній пропадає, так що її не видно, і показуються кістки її, яких не було видно.	until his flesh shall be consumed, and he shall shew his bones bare.

І душа її наближається до могили і життя її — до смерті.	His soul also draws nigh to death, and his life is in Hades.

Якщо є у неї ангел-наставник, один з тисячі, щоб показати людині пряму путь її, —	Though there should be a thousand messengers of death, not one of them shall wound him: if he should purpose in his heart to turn to the Lord, and declare to man his fault, and shew his folly;

Бог змилосердиться над нею і скаже: звільни її від могили; Я знайшов умилостивлення.	he will support him, that he should not perish, and will restore his body as fresh plaster upon a wall; and he will fill his bones with marrow.

Тоді тіло її зробиться свіжішим, ніж у молодості; вона повернеться до днів юности своєї.	And he will make his flesh tender as that of a babe, and he will restore him among men in his full strength.

Буде молитися Богу, і Він — милостивий до неї; з радістю дивиться на лице її і повертає людині праведність її.	And he shall pray to the Lord, and his prayer shall be accepted of him; he shall enter with a cheerful countenance, with a full expression of praise: for he will render to men their due.

Він буде дивитися на людей і говорити: грішив я і спотворював правду, і не воздано мені;	Even then a man shall blame himself, saying, What kind of things have I done? and he has not punished me according to the full amount of my sins.

Він визволив душу мою від могили, і життя моє бачить світло.	Deliver my soul, that it may not go to destruction, and my life shall see the light.

Ось, усе це робить Бог двічі-тричі з людиною,	Behold, all these things the Mighty One works in a threefold manner with a man.

щоб відвести душу її від могили й освітити її світлом живих.	And he has delivered my soul from death, that my life may praise him in the light.
31	31
Прислухайся, Іове, слухай мене, мовчи, і я буду говорити.	Hearken, Job, and hear me: be silent, and I will speak.

Якщо маєш, що сказати, відповідай; говори, тому що я бажав би твого виправдання;	If thou hast words, answer me: speak, for I desire thee to be justified.

якщо ж ні, то слухай мене: мовчи, і я навчу тебе мудрости.	If not, do thou hear me: be silent, and I will teach thee.
Глава 34	Chapter 34

1	1
І продовжував Елиуй і сказав:	And Elius continued, and said,

вислухайте, мудрі, слова мої, і прихиліть до мене вухо, розсудливі!	Hear me, ye wise men; hearken, ye that have knowledge.
3	3
Бо вухо розрізняє слова, як гортань розрізняє смак їжі.	For the ear tries words, and the mouth tastes meat.
4	4
Співставляємо між собою міркування і розпізнаємо, що добре.	Let us choose judgment to ourselves: let us know among ourselves what is right.
5	5
Ось, Іов сказав: я правий, але Бог позбавив мене суду.	For Job has said, I am righteous: the Lord has removed my judgment.
6	6
Чи повинен я говорити лжу на правду мою? Моя рана незцілима без провини.	And he has erred in my judgment: my wound is severe without unrighteousness of mine.
7	7
Чи є така людина, як Іов, який п’є знущання, як воду,	What man is as Job, drinking scorning like water?
8	8
вступає у співтовариство з тими, хто чинить беззаконня і ходить з людьми нечестивими?	saying, I have not sinned, nor committed ungodliness, nor had fellowship with workers of iniquity, to go with the ungodly.
9	9
Тому що він сказав: немає користи для людини у благовгоджанні Богу.	For thou shouldest not say, There shall be no visitation of a man, whereas there is a visitation on him from the Lord.
10	10
Отже, послухайте мене, мужі мудрі! Не може бути в Бога неправда або у Вседержителя неправосуддя,	Wherefore hear me, ye that are wise in heart: far be it from me to sin before the Lord, and to pervert righteousness before the Almighty.

бо Він за ділами людини чинить з нею і за путями чоловіка відплачує йому.	Yea, he renders to a man accordingly as each of them does, and in a man's path he will find him.
12	12
Істинно, Бог не чинить неправди і Вседержитель не спотворює суд.	And thinkest thou that the Lord will do wrong, or will the Almighty who made the earth wrest judgment?
13	13
Хто, крім Нього, промишляє про землю? І хто керує всією вселенною?	And who is he that made the whole world under heaven, and all things therein?
14	14
Якби Він звернув серце Своє до Себе і взяв до Себе дух її і подих її,	For if he would confine, and restrain his spirit with himself;
15	15
миттєво загинула б усяка плоть, і людина повернулася б у порох.	all flesh would die together, and every mortal would return to the earth, whence also he was formed.
16	16
Отже, якщо ти маєш розум, то слухай це і зважай на слова мої.	Take heed lest he rebuke thee: hear this, hearken to the voice of words.
17	17
Чи може ненависник правди володарювати? І чи можеш ти звинуватити Всеправедного?	Behold then the one that hates iniquities, and that destroys the wicked, who is for ever just.
18	18
Чи можна сказати цареві: ти — нечестивець, і князям: ви — беззаконники?	He is ungodly that says to a king, Thou art a transgressor, that says to princes, O most ungodly one.
19	19
Але Він не дивиться і на лиця князів і не дає переваги багатому над бідним, тому що усі вони діло рук Його.	Such a one as would not reverence the face of an honourable man, neither knows how to give honour to the great, so as that their persons should be respected.
20	20
Раптово вони помирають; серед ночі народ обуриться, і вони зникають; і сильних виганяють не силою.	But it shall turn out vanity to them, to cry and beseech a man; for they dealt unlawfully, the poor being turned aside from their right.
21	21
Тому що очі Його над путями людини, і Він бачить усі кроки її.	For he surveys the works of men, and nothing of what they do has escaped him.
22	22
Немає пітьми, ні тіні смертної, де могли б сховатися ті, що чинять беззаконня.	Neither shall there be a place for the workers of iniquity to hide themselves.

Тому Він уже не вимагає від людини, щоб вона йшла на суд з Богом.	For he will not lay upon a man more than right.

Він скрушає сильних без дослідження і поставляє інших на їхні місця;	For the Lord looks down upon all men, who comprehends unsearchable things, glorious also and excellent things without number.
25	25
тому що Він робить відомими діла їхні і скидає їх уночі, і вони знищуються.	Who discovers their works, and will bring night about upon them, and they shall be brought low.

Він уражає їх, як беззаконних людей, перед очима інших,	And he quite destroys the ungodly, for they are seen before him.
27	27
за те, що вони відвернулися від Нього і не зрозуміли всіх шляхів Його,	Because they turned aside from the law of God, and did not regard his ordinances,

так що дійшло до Нього волання бідних, і Він почув стогін пригноблених.	so as to bring before him the cry of the needy; for he will hear the cry of the poor.

Чи дарує Він тишу, хто може збурити? чи ховає Він лице Своє, хто може побачити Його? Чи буде це для народу, чи для однієї людини,	And he will give quiet, and who will condemn? and he will hide his face, and who shall see him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man also:

щоб не царював лицемір на спокусу народу.	causing a hypocrite to be king, because of the waywardness of the people.

До Бога слід говорити: я потерпів, більше не буду грішити.	For there is one that says to the Mighty One, I have received blessings; I will not take a pledge:

А чого я не знаю, Ти навчи мене; і якщо я зробив беззаконня, більше не буду.	I will see apart from myself: do thou shew me if I have done unrighteousness; I will not do so any more.

Чи за твоїм міркуванням Він повинен відплачувати? І оскільки ти відкидаєш, то тобі варто обирати, а не мені; говори, що знаєш.	Will he take vengeance for it on thee, whereas thou wilt put it far from thee? for thou shalt choose, and not I; and what thou knowest, speak thou.

Люди розумні скажуть мені, і муж мудрий, який слухає мене:	Because the wise in heart shall say this, and a wise man listens to my word.

Іов нерозумно говорить, і слова його не мають сенсу.	But Job has not spoken with understanding, his words are not uttered with knowledge.

Я бажав би, щоб Іов цілком був випробуваний, за відповідями його, які властиві людям нечестивим.	Howbeit do thou learn, Job: no longer make answer as the foolish:

Інакше він до гріха свого додасть відступлення, буде рукоплескати між нами і ще більше наговорить проти Бога.	that we add not to our sins: for iniquity will be reckoned against us, if we speak many words before the Lord.
Глава 35	Chapter 35

1	1
І продовжував Елиуй і сказав: чи	And Elius resumed and said,

вважаєш ти справедливим, що сказав: я правіший за Бога?	What is this that thou thinkest to be according to right? who art thou that thou hast said, I am righteous before the Lord?

Ти сказав: яка користь мені? і який прибуток я мав би перед тим, як коли б я і грішив?
4	4
Я відповім тобі і твоїм друзям з тобою:	I will answer thee, and thy three friends.
5	5
поглянь на небо і дивися; поглянь на хмари, вони вище тебе.	Look up to the sky and see; and consider the clouds, how high they are above thee.
6	6
Якщо ти грішиш, що робиш ти Йому? і якщо злочини твої збільшуються, що заподіюєш ти Йому?	If thou hast sinned, what wilt thou do? and if too thou hast transgressed much, what canst thou perform?

Якщо ти праведний, що даєш Йому? або що одержує Він від руки твоєї?	And suppose thou art righteous, what wilt thou give him? or what shall he receive of thy hand?
8	8
Нечестя твоє відноситься до людини, як ти, і праведність твоя до сина людського.	Thy ungodliness may affect a man who is like to thee; or thy righteousness a son of man.
9	9
Від безлічі гнобителів стогнуть гноблені, і від руки сильних волають.	They that are oppressed of a multitude will be ready to cry out; they will call for help because of the arm of many.
10	10
Але ніхто не говорить: де Бог, Творець мій, Який дає пісні вночі,	But none said, Where is God that made me, who appoints the night-watches;
11	11
Який навчає нас більше, ніж худобу земну, і напоумлює нас більше, ніж птахів небесних?	who makes me to differ from the four-footed beasts of the earth, and from the birds of the sky?
12	12
Там вони волають, і Він не відповідає їм, з причини гордости злих людей.	There they shall cry, and none shall hearken, even because of the insolence of wicked men.
13	13
Але неправда, що Бог не чує і Вседержитель не дивиться на це.	For the Lord desires not to look on error, for he is the Almighty One.
14	14
Хоча ти сказав, що ти не бачиш Його, але суд перед Ним, і — чекай на нього.	He beholds them that perform lawless deeds, and he will save me: and do thou plead before him, if thou canst praise him, as it is possible even now.

Але нині, тому що гнів Його не відвідав його і він не пізнав його у всій суворості,	For he is not now regarding his wrath, nor has he noticed severely any trespass.

Іов і відкрив легковажно вуста свої і нерозважливо марнує слова.	Yet Job vainly opens his mouth, in ignorance he multiplies words.
Глава 36	Chapter 36

І продовжував Елиуй і сказав:	And Elius further continued, and said,

почекай мене трохи, і я покажу тобі, що я маю ще дещо сказати за Бога.	Wait for me yet a little while, that I may teach thee: for there is yet speech in me.

Почну мої міркування здалеку, і воздам Творцю моєму справедливість,	Having fetched my knowledge from afar, and according to my works,

тому що слова мої точно не лжа: перед тобою — довершений у пізнаннях.	I will speak just things truly, and thou shalt not unjustly receive unjust words.
5	5
Ось, Бог могутній і не нехтує сильним міцністю серця;	But know that the Lord will not cast off an innocent man: being mighty in strength of wisdom,
6	6
Він не підтримує нечестивих і відплачує належне пригнобленим;	he will not by any means save alive the ungodly: and he will grant the judgment of the poor.
7	7
Він не відвертає очей Своїх від праведників, але з царями назавжди посаджує їх на престолі, і вони підносяться.	He will not turn away his eyes from the righteous, but they shall be with kings on the throne: and he will establish them in triumph, and they shall be exalted.
8	8
Якщо ж вони закуті ланцюгами й утримуються в кайданах біди,	But they that are bound in fetters shall be holden in cords of poverty.
9	9
то Він вказує їм на діла їхні і на беззаконня їхні, тому що примножилися,	And he shall recount to them their works, and their transgressions, for such will act with violence.
10	10
і відкриває їх вухо для напоумлення і говорить їм, щоб вони відступили від нечестя.	But he will hearken to the righteous: and he has said that they shall turn from unrighteousness.
11	11
Якщо послухають і будуть служити Йому, то проведуть дні свої у благополуччі і літа свої в радості;	If they should hear and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in honour.
12	12
якщо ж не послухають, то загинуть від стріли і помруть у нерозумі.	But he preserves not the ungodly; because they are not willing to know the Lord, and because when reproved they were disobedient.
13	13
Але лицеміри живлять у серці гнів і не взивають до Нього, коли Він заковує їх у кайдани;	And the hypocrites in heart will array wrath against themselves; they will not cry, because he has bound them.
14	14
тому душа їх помирає у молодості і життя їх із блудниками.	Therefore let their soul die in youth, and their life be wounded by messengers of death.
15	15
Він спасає бідного від лиха його й у пригнобленні відкриває вухо його.	Because they afflicted the weak and helpless: and he will vindicate the judgment of the meek.
16	16
І тебе вивів би Він з тісноти на простір, де немає стиснення, і те, що ставиться на стіл твій, було б наповнене жиром;	And he has also enticed thee out of the mouth of the enemy:
17	17
але ти сповнений судженнями нечестивих: судження й осудження — близькі.	there is a deep gulf and a rushing stream beneath it, and thy table came down full of fatness. Judgment shall not fail from the righteous;
18	18
Нехай не вразить тебе гнів Божий покаранням! Великий викуп не спасе тебе.	but there shall be wrath upon the ungodly, by reason of the ungodliness of the bribes which they received for iniquities.
19	19
Чи дасть Він яку ціну твоєму багатству? Ні, — ні золоту і ніякому скарбу.	Let not thy mind willingly turn thee aside from the petition of the feeble that are in distress.
20	20
Не бажай тієї ночі, коли народи знищуються на своєму місці.	And draw not forth all the mighty men by night, so that the people should go up instead of them.
21	21
Бережися, не схиляйся до нечестя, якому ти віддав перевагу перед стражданнями.	But take heed lest thou do that which is wrong: for of this thou hast made choice because of poverty.

Він збирає краплі води; вони в безлічі виливаються дощем:	And the drops of rain are numbered by him, and shall be poured out in rain to form a cloud.

із хмар падають і виливаються рясно на людей.	The ancient heavens shall flow, and the clouds overshadow innumerable mortals:

Хто може також осягнути простір хмар, тріщання намету Його?	And though one should understand the outspreadings of the clouds, or the measure of his tabernacle;

Ось, Він посилає на нього світло Своє і покриває дно моря.	behold he will stretch his bow against him, and he covers the bottom of the sea.

Звідти Він судить народи, дає їжу в достатку.	For by them he will judge the nations: he will give food to him that has strength.

Він ховає в долонях Своїх блискавку і повеліває їй, кого вразити.	He has hidden the light in his hands, and given charge concerning it to the interposing cloud.

Тріскотіння її дає звістку про неї; худоба також відчуває, що відбувається.	The Lord will declare concerning this to his friend: but there is a portion also for unrighteousness.
Глава 37	Chapter 37

І від цього тремтить серце моє і зрушилося з місця свого.	At this also my heart is troubled, and moved out of its place.

Слухайте, слухайте голос Його і грім, що виходить з вуст Його.	Hear thou a report by the anger of the Lord's wrath, and a discourse shall come out of his mouth.

Під усім небом перекоти його, і блищання його — до країв землі.	His dominion is under the whole heaven, and his light is at the extremities of the earth.

За ним гримить голос; гримить Він гласом величі Своєї і не зупиняє його, коли голос Його почутий.	After him shall be a cry with a loud voice; he shall thunder with the voice of his excellency, yet he shall not cause men to pass away, for one shall hear his voice.

Дивно гримить Бог гласом Своїм, робить діла великі, для нас незбагненні.	The Mighty One shall thunder wonderfully with his voice: for he has done great things which we knew not;
6	6
Бо снігу Він говорить: будь на землі; однаково дрібний дощ і великий дощ у Його владі.	commanding the snow, Be thou upon the earth, and the stormy rain, and the storm of the showers of his might.

Він кладе печать на руку кожної людини, щоб усі люди знали діла Його.	He seals up the hand of every man, that every man may know his own weakness.

Тоді звір іде в притулок і залишається у своїх лігвах.	And the wild beasts come in under the covert, and rest in their lair.

З півдня приходить буря, з півночі — холоднеча.	Troubles come on out of the secret chambers, and cold from the mountain-tops.

Від подиху Божого утворюється лід, і поверхня води стискується.	And from the breath of the Mighty One he will send frost; and he guides the water in whatever way he pleases.

Також вологою Він наповнює хмари, і хмари випромінюють світло Його,	And if a cloud obscures what is precious to him, his light will disperse the cloud.

і вони спрямовуються за намірами Його, щоб виконати те, що Він повелить їм на лиці населеної землі.	And he will carry round the encircling clouds by his governance, to perform their works: whatsoever he shall command them,

Чи знаєш, як Бог розпоряджається ними і повеліває світлу блищати із хмари Своєї?	We know that God has disposed his works, having made light out of darkness.

Чи розумієш рівновагу хмар, дивне діло Найдосконалішого у знанні?	And he knows the divisions of the clouds, and the signal overthrows of the ungodly.

Як нагрівається твій одяг, коли Він заспокоює землю від півдня?	But thy robe is warm, and there is quiet upon the land.

Чи ти з Ним розпростер небеса, тверді, як відлите дзеркало?	Wilt thou establish with him foundations for the ancient heavens? they are strong as a molten mirror.

Навчи нас, що сказати Йому? Ми в цій пітьмі нічого не можемо зрозуміти.	Wherefore teach me, what shall we say to him? and let us cease from saying much.

Чи буде сповіщено Йому, що я говорю? Чи сказав хто, що те, що сказано, доноситься Йому?	Have I a book or a scribe by me, that I may stand and put man to silence?

Тепер не видно яскравого світла у хмарах, але пронесеться вітер і розчистить їх.	But the light is not visible to all: it shines afar off in the heavens, as that which is from him in the clouds.

Світла погода приходить від півночі, і навколо Бога страшна велич.	From the north come the clouds shining like gold: in these great are the glory and honour of the Almighty;

Вседержитель! ми розумом не осягаємо Його. Він великий силою, судом і повнотою правосуддя. Він нікого не гнітить.	and we do not find another his equal in strength: as for him that judges justly, dost thou not think that he listens?

Тому нехай благоговіють перед Ним люди, і нехай тремтять перед Ним усі мудрі серцем!	Wherefore men shall fear him; and the wise also in heart shall fear him.
Глава 38	Chapter 38

[Коли Елиуй перестав говорити,] Господь відповів Іову із бурі і сказав:	And after Elius had ceased from speaking, the Lord spoke to Job through the whirlwind and clouds, saying,

хто цей, що затьмарює Провидіння словами без сенсу?	Who is this that hides counsel from me, and confines words in his heart, and thinks to conceal them from me?

Опережи нині стегна твої, як муж: Я буду запитувати тебе, і ти пояснюй Мені:	Gird thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me.

де був ти, коли Я заклав основи землі? Скажи, якщо знаєш.	Where wast thou when I founded the earth? tell me now, if thou hast knowledge,

Хто поклав міру її, якщо знаєш? або хто протягував по ній шнур?	who set the measures of it, if thou knowest? or who stretched a line upon it?

На чому затверджені основи її, або хто поклав наріжний камінь її,	On what are its rings fastened? and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it?

при загальному торжестві ранкових зірок, коли всі сини Божі викликували від радости?	When the stars were made, all my angels praised me with a loud voice.

Хто зачинив море воротами, коли воно виверглося, вийшло ніби з утроби,	And I shut up the sea with gates, when it rushed out, coming forth out of its mother's womb.

коли Я хмари зробив одежею його й імлу пеленами його,	And I made a cloud its clothing, and swathed it in mist.

й утвердив йому Моє визначення, і поставив засуви і ворота,	And I set bounds to it, surrounding it with bars and gates.

і сказав: сюди дійдеш і не перейдеш, і тут межа гордовитим хвилям твоїм?	And I said to it, Hitherto shalt thou come, but thou shalt not go beyond, but thy waves shall be confined within thee.

Чи давав ти коли в житті своєму накази ранку і чи вказував зорі місце її,	Or did I order the morning light in thy time; and did the morning star then first see his appointed place;

щоб вона охопила краї землі і струсила з неї нечестивих,	to lay hold of the extremities of the earth, to cast out the ungodly out of it?

щоб земля змінилася, як глина під печаткою, і стала, як різнобарвний одяг,	Or didst thou take clay of the ground, and form a living creature, and set it with the power of speech upon the earth?

щоб відібралося у нечестивих світло їх і зухвала рука їх скрушилася?	And hast thou removed light from the ungodly, and crushed the arm of the proud?

Чи сходив ти у глибину моря і чи входив у дослідження безодні?	Or hast thou gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep?

Чи відчинялися для тебе врата смерти, і чи бачив ти врата тіні смертної?	And do the gates of death open to thee for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw thee?

Чи оглянув ти широту землі? Поясни, якщо знаєш усе це.	And hast thou been instructed in the breadth of the whole earth under heaven? tell me now, what is the extent of it?

Де путь до оселі світла, і де місце темряви?	And in what kind of a land does the light dwell? and of what kind is the place of darkness?

Ти, звичайно, доходив до меж її і знаєш дорогу до дому її.	If thou couldest bring me to their utmost boundaries, and if also thou knowest their paths;

Ти знаєш це, тому що ти вже був тоді народжений, і число днів твоїх дуже велике.	I know then that thou wert born at that time, and the number of thy years is great.

Чи входив ти у сховища снігу і чи бачив скарбниці граду,	But hast thou gone to the treasures of snow? and hast thou seen the treasures of hail?

які бережу Я на час смутний, на день битви і війни?	And is there a store of them, for thee against the time of thine enemies, for the day of wars and battle?

Яким шляхом розливається світло і розноситься східний вітер по землі?	And whence proceeds the frost? or whence is the south wind dispersed over the whole world under heaven?

Хто проводить протоки для виливання води і шлях для громоносної блискавки,	And who prepared a course for the violent rain, and a way for the thunders;

щоб ішов дощ на землю безлюдну, на пустелю, де немає людини,	to rain upon the land where there is no man, the wilderness, where there is not a man in it; so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited land,

щоб насичувати пустелю і степ і пробуджувати трав’яні зародки до зростання?	and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs?

Чи є у дощу батько? або хто народжує краплі роси?	Who is the rain's father? and who has generated the drops of dew?

З чиєї утроби виходить лід, та іній небесний, — хто народжує його?	And out of whose womb comes the ice? and who has produced the frost in the sky,

Води, як камінь, міцніють, і поверхня безодні замерзає.	which descends like flowing water? who has terrified the face of the ungodly?

Чи можеш ти зв’язати вузол Хима і порушити узи Кесиль?	And dost thou understand the band of Pleias, and hast thou opened the barrier of Orion?

Чи можеш виводити сузір’я у свій час і вести Ас (зірницю) з її дітьми?	Or wilt thou reveal Mazuroth in his season, and the evening star with his rays? Wilt thou guide them?

Чи знаєш ти устави неба, чи можеш встановити володіння його на землі?	And knowest thou the changes of heaven, or the events which take place together under heaven?

Чи можеш піднести голос твій до хмар, щоб вода в достатку покрила тебе?	And wilt thou call a cloud with thy voice, and will it obey thee with a violent shower of much rain?

Чи можеш посилати блискавки, і чи підуть вони і чи скажуть тобі: ось ми?	And wilt thou send lightnings, and they shall go? and shall they say to thee, What is thy pleasure?

Чи ти ловиш здобич левиці і насичуєш молодих левів,	And wilt thou hunt a prey for the lions? and satisfy the desires of the serpents?

коли вони лежать у барлогах або ховаються під тінню у засідці?	For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods.

Хто готує ворону корм його, коли пташенята його кричать до Бога, блукаючи без їжі?	And who has prepared food for the raven? for its young ones wander and cry to the Lord, in search of food.
Глава 39	Chapter 39

Чи знаєш ти час, коли народжуються дикі кози на скелях, і чи помічав пологи ланей?	Say if thou knowest the time of the bringing forth of the wild goats of the rock, and if thou hast marked the calving of the hinds:

чи можеш обчислити місяці вагітности їх? і чи знаєш час пологів їх?	and if thou hast numbered the full months of their being with young, and if thou hast relieved their pangs:

Вони вигинаються, народжуючи дітей своїх, викидаючи свої ноші;	and hast reared their young without fear; and wilt thou loosen their pangs?

діти їх приходять у силу, ростуть на полі, йдуть і не повертаються до них.	Their young will break forth; they will be multiplied with offspring: their young will go forth, and will not return to them.

Хто випустив дикого осла на волю, і хто розв’язав пута онагру,	And who is he that sent forth the wild ass free? and who loosed his bands?

якому степ Я призначив домом і солончаки — житлом?	whereas I made his habitation the wilderness, and the salt land his coverts.

Він насміхається над міською багатолюдністю і не чує криків погонича,	He laughs to scorn the multitude of the city, and hears not the chiding of the tax-gatherer.

по горах шукає собі їжу і ганяється за всякою зеленню.	He will survey the mountains as his pasture, and he seeks after every green thing.

Чи захоче єдиноріг служити тобі і чи переночує біля ясел твоїх?	And will the unicorn be willing to serve thee, or to lie down at thy manger?

Чи можеш мотузкою прив’язати єдинорога до борозни, і чи стане він боронити за тобою поле?	And wilt thou bind his yoke with thongs, or will he plough furrows for thee in the plain?

Чи будеш надіятися на нього, тому що в нього сила велика, і чи даси йому роботу твою?	And dost thou trust him, because his strength is great? and wilt thou commit thy works to him?

Чи повіриш йому, що він насіння твоє поверне і складе на тік твій?	And wilt thou believe that he will return to thee thy seed, and bring it in to thy threshing-floor?

Чи ти дав красиві крила павичу і пера і пух страусу?	The peacock has a beautiful wing: if the stork and the ostrich conceive, it is worthy of notice,

Він залишає яйця свої на землі, і на піску зігріває їх,	for the ostrich will leave her eggs in the ground, and warm them on the dust,

і забуває, що нога може роздавити їх і польовий звір може розтоптати їх;	and has forgotten that the foot will scatter them, and the wild beasts of the field trample them.

він жорстокий до дітей своїх, немов не до своїх, і не боїться, що праця його буде даремна;	She has hardened herself against her young ones, as though she bereaved not herself: she labours in vain without fear.

тому що Бог не дав йому мудрости і не наділив його глуздом;	For God has withholden wisdom from her, and not given her a portion in understanding.

а коли підніметься на висоту, посміється з коня і вершника його.	In her season she will lift herself on high; she will scorn the horse and his rider.

Чи ти дав коню силу і наділив шию його гривою?	Hast thou invested the horse with strength, and clothed his neck with terror?

Чи можеш ти злякати його, як сарану? Хропіння ніздрів його — жах;	And hast thou clad him in perfect armour, and made his breast glorious with courage?

риє ногою землю і захоплюється силою; йде назустріч зброї;	He paws exulting in the plain, and goes forth in strength into the plain.

він глузує з небезпеки і не боїться і не відвертається від меча;	He laughs to scorn a king as he meets him, and will by no means turn back from the sword.

сагайдак гуркотить над ним, блискотить спис і дротик;	The bow and sword resound against him; and his rage will swallow up the ground:

у пориві і люті він ковтає землю і не може стояти при звуці труби;	and he will not believe until the trumpet sounds.

при трубному звуці він подає голос: гу! гу! і здалеку чує битву, гучні голоси вождів і крик.	And when the trumpet sounds, he says, Aha! and afar off he smells the war with prancing and neighing.

Чи твоєю мудрістю літає яструб і спрямовує крила свої на південь?	And does the hawk remain steady by thy wisdom, having spread out her wings unmoved, looking toward the region of the south?

Чи за твоїм словом піднімається орел і влаштовує на висоті гніздо своє?	And does the eagle rise at thy command, and the vulture remain sitting over his nest,

Він живе на скелі і ночує на зубцях скелі і на місцях неприступних;	on a crag of a rock, and in a secret place?

звідти видивляється собі їжу: очі його дивляться далеко;	Thence he seeks food, his eyes observe from far.

пташенята його п’ють кров, і де труп, там і він.	And his young ones roll themselves in blood, and wherever the carcases may be, immediately they are found.

І продовжував Господь і сказав Іову:

чи буде той, хто змагається з Вседержителем, ще вчити? Той, хто викриває Бога, нехай відповідає Йому.

І відповів Іов Господу і сказав:

ось, я нікчемний; що буду я відповідати Тобі? Руку мою покладаю на вуста мої.

Один раз я говорив, — тепер відповідати не буду, навіть двічі, але більше не буду.
Глава 40	Chapter 40

І відповів Господь Іову з бурі і сказав:	And the Lord God answered Job, and said,

опережи, як муж, стегна твої: Я буду запитувати тебе, а ти пояснюй Мені.	Will any one pervert judgment with the Mighty One? and he that reproves God, let him return it for answer.

Ти хочеш відкинути суд Мій, звинуватити Мене, щоб виправдати себе?	And Job answered and said to the Lord,

Чи така в тебе сила, як у Бога? І чи можеш загриміти голосом, як Він?	Why do I yet plead? being rebuked even while reproving the Lord: hearing such things, whereas I am nothing: and what shall I answer to these arguments? I will lay my hand upon my mouth.

Прикрась же себе величчю і славою, одягнись у блиск і красу;	I have spoken once; but I will not do so a second time.

вилий лють гніву твого, подивися на все горде і смири його;	And the Lord yet again answered and spoke to Job out of the cloud, saying,

глянь на всіх зарозумілих і принизь їх, і скруши нечестивих на місцях їх;	Nay, gird up now thy loins like a man; and I will ask thee, and do thou answer me.

зарий усіх їх у землю й лиця їх покрий темрявою.	Do not set aside my judgment: and dost thou think that I have dealt with thee in any other way, than that thou mightest appear to be righteous?

Тоді і Я визнаю, що правиця твоя може спасати тебе.	Hast thou an arm like the Lord's? or dost thou thunder with a voice like his?
10	10
Ось бегемот, якого Я створив, як і тебе; він їсть траву, як віл;	Assume now a lofty bearing and power; and clothe thyself with glory and honour.
11	11
ось, його сила в стегнах його і міцність його у м’язах черева його;	And send forth messengers with wrath; and lay low every haughty one.

повертає хвостом своїм, як кедром; жили ж на стегнах його переплетені;	Bring down also the proud man; and consume at once the ungodly.

ноги в нього, як мідні труби; кістки в нього, як залізні прути;	And hide them together in the earth; and fill their faces with shame.

це — верх шляхів Божих; тільки Той, Хто створив його, може наблизити до нього меч Свій;	Then will I confess that thy right hand can save thee.

гори приносять йому їжу, і там усі звірі польові грають;	But now look at the wild beasts with thee; they eat grass like oxen.

він лягає під тінистими деревами, під дахом очерету й у болотах;	Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

тінисті дерева покривають його своєю тінню; верби при струмках оточують його;	He sets up his tail like a cypress; and his nerves are wrapped together.

ось, він п’є з ріки і не поспішає; залишається спокійним, хоч би Йордан побіг до рота його.	His sides are sides of brass; and his backbone is as cast iron.

Чи візьме хто його на очах його і чи проколе йому ніс багром?	This is the chief of the creation of the Lord; made to be played with by his angels.

Чи можеш ти вудкою витягти левиафана і мотузкою схопити за язик його?	And when he has gone up to a steep mountain, he causes joy to the quadrupeds in the deep.

чи вдінеш кільце в ніздрі його? чи проколеш голкою щелепу його?	He lies under trees of every kind, by the papyrus, and reed, and bulrush.

чи буде він довго благати тебе і чи буде говорити з тобою лагідно?	And the great trees make a shadow over him with their branches, and so do the bushes of the field.

чи укладе він договір з тобою, і чи візьмеш його назавжди собі за раба?	If there should be a flood, he will not perceive it; he trusts that Jordan will rush up into his mouth.

чи станеш забавлятися ним, як пташкою, і чи зв’яжеш його для дівчаток твоїх?	Yet one shall take him in his sight; one shall catch him with a cord, and pierce his nose.

чи будуть продавати його товариші ловитви, чи розділять його між хананейськими купцями?	But wilt thou catch the serpent with a hook, and put a halter about his nose?

чи можеш простромити шкіру його списом і голову його рибальською острогою?	Or wilt thou fasten a ring in his nostril, and bore his lip with a clasp?

Клади на нього руку твою, і пам’ятай про ту боротьбу: більше не будеш.	Will he address thee with a petition? softly, with the voice of a suppliant?
Глава 41	Chapter 41

Надія марна: чи не впадеш від одного погляду його?	Hast thou not seen him? and hast thou not wondered at the things said of him?

Немає настільки відважного, який насмілився б потурбувати його; хто ж може устояти перед Моїм лицем?	Dost thou not fear because preparation has been made by me? for who is there that resists me?

Хто випередив Мене, щоб Мені винагородити його? під усім небом усе Моє.	Or who will resist me, and abide, since the whole world under heaven is mine?

Не промовчу про члени його, про силу і красиву пропорційність їх.	I will not be silent because of him: though because of his power one shall pity his antagonist.

то може відкрити верх одягу його, хто підійде до подвійних щелеп його?	Who will open the face of his garment? and who can enter within the fold of his breast-plate?

Хто може відчинити двері лиця його? коло зубів його — жах;	Who will open the doors of his face? terror is round about his teeth.

міцні щити його — краса; вони скріплені ніби твердою печаткою;	His inwards are as brazen plates, and the texture of his skin as a smyrite stone.

один іншого торкається близько, так що і повітря не проходить між ними;	One part cleaves fast to another, and the air cannot come between them.

один з іншим лежать щільно, зчепилися і не розсуваються.	They will remain united each to the other: they are closely joined, and cannot be separated.

Від його чхання показується світло; очі в нього, як вії зорі;	At his sneezing a light shines, and his eyes are as the appearance of the morning star.

з пащі його виходять пломені, вискакують вогненні іскри;	Out of his mouth proceed as it were burning lamps, and as it were hearths of fire are cast abroad.

з ніздрів його виходить дим, як з киплячого горщика або казана.	Out of his nostrils proceeds smoke of a furnace burning with fire of coals.

Подих його розжарює вугілля, і з пащі його виходить полум’я.	His breath is as live coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.

На шиї його живе сила, і перед ним біжить жах.	And power is lodged in his neck, before him destruction runs.

М’ясисті частини тіла його з’єднані між собою твердо, не здригнуться.	The flesh also of his body is joined together: if one pours violence upon him, he shall not be moved.

Серце його тверде, як камінь, і жорстке, як нижнє жорно.	His heart is firm as a stone, and it stands like an unyielding anvil.

Коли він піднімається, силачі в страху, зовсім губляться від жаху.	And when he turns, he is a terror to the four-footed wild beasts which leap upon the earth.

Меч, що доторкнеться до нього, не встоїть, ні спис, ні дротик, ні лати.	If spears should come against him, men will effect nothing, either with the spear or the breast-plate.

Залізо він вважає за солому, мідь — за гниле дерево.	For he considers iron as chaff, and brass as rotten wood.
20	20
Дочка (стріла) лука не змусить його тікати; а камені із пращі для нього полова.	The bow of brass shall not wound him, he deems a slinger as grass.

Булава вважається у нього за соломину; зі свисту дротика він сміється.	Mauls are counted as stubble; and he laughs to scorn the waving of the firebrand.

залишає за собою світлу стежку; безодня здається сивиною.	and the lowest part of the deep as a captive: he reckons the deep as his range.

Немає на землі подібного до нього; він створений безстрашним;	There is nothing upon the earth like to him, formed to be sported with by my angels.

на все високе дивиться сміливо; він цар над усіма синами гордости.	He beholds every high thing: and he is king of all that are in the waters.
Глава 42	Chapter 42

1	1
І відповів Іов Господу і сказав:	Then Job answered and said to the Lord,

знаю, що Ти все можеш, і що намір Твій не може бути зупинений.	I know that thou canst do all things, and nothing is impossible with thee.
3	3
Хто цей, що потьмарює Провидіння, нічого не розуміючи? — Так, я говорив про те, чого не розумів, про діла дивні для мене, яких я не знав.	For who is he that hides counsel from thee? or who keeps back his words, and thinks to hide them from thee? and who will tell me what I knew not, great and wonderful things which I understood not?

Вислухай, взивав я, і я буду говорити, і що буду запитувати в Тебе, поясни мені.	But hear me, O Lord, that I also may speak: and I will ask thee, and do thou teach me.
5	5
Я чув про Тебе слухом вуха; тепер же мої очі бачать Тебе;	I have heard the report of thee by the ear before; but now mine eye has seen thee.
6	6
тому я відрікаюся і розкаююся в поросі і попелі.	Wherefore I have counted myself vile, and have fainted: and I esteem myself dust and ashes.

І було після того, як Господь сказав слова ті Іову, сказав Господь Елифазу феманитянину: горить гнів Мій на тебе і на двох друзів твоїх за те, що ви говорили про Мене не так вірно, як раб Мій Іов.	And it came to pass after the Lord had spoken all these words to Job, that the Lord said to Eliphaz the Thæmanite, Thou hast sinned, and thy two friends: for ye have not said anything true before me, as my servant Job has.

Отже, візьміть собі сім тельців і сім баранів і підіть до раба Мого Іова і принесіть за себе жертву; і раб Мій Іов помолиться за вас, тому що тільки лице його Я прийму, щоб не відкинути вас за те, що ви говорили про Мене не так вірно, як раб Мій Іов.	Now then take seven bullocks, and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and he shall offer a burnt-offering for you. And my servant Job shall pray for you, for I will only accept him: for but for his sake, I would have destroyed you, for ye have not spoken the truth against my servant Job.

І пішли Елифаз феманитянин і Вилдад савхеянин і Софар наамитянин, і зробили так, як Господь повелів їм, — і Господь прийняв лице Іова.	So Eliphaz the Thæmanite, and Baldad the Sauchite, and Sophar the Minæan, went and did as the Lord commanded them: and he pardoned their sin for the sake of Job.
10	10
І повернув Господь втрату Іова, коли він помолився за друзів своїх; і дав Господь Іову вдвічі більше того, що він мав раніше.	And the Lord prospered Job: and when he prayed also for his friends, he forgave them their sin: and the Lord gave Job twice as much, even the double of what he had before.
11	11
Тоді прийшли до нього всі брати його й усі сестри його і всі колишні знайомі його, і їли з ним хліб у домі його, і тужили з ним, і утішали його за все зло, яке Господь навів на нього, і дали йому кожен по кеситі і по золотому кільцю.	And all his brethren and his sisters heard all that had happened to him, and they came to him, and so did all that had known him from the first: and they ate and drank with him, and comforted him, and wondered at all that the Lord had brought upon him: and each one gave him a lamb, and four drachms' weight of gold, even of unstamped gold.
12	12
І благословив Бог останні дні Іова більше, ніж минулі: у нього було чотирнадцять тисяч дрібної худоби, шість тисяч верблюдів, тисяча пар волів і тисяча ослиць.	And the Lord blessed the latter end of Job, more than the beginning: and his cattle were fourteen thousand sheep, six thousand camels, a thousand yoke of oxen, a thousand she-asses of the pastures.
13	13
І було в нього сім синів і три дочки.	And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
14	14
І нарік він ім’я першій Емима, ім’я другій — Кассія, а ім’я третій — Керенгаппух.	And he called the first, Day, and the second, Casia, and the third, Amalthæa's horn.
15	15
І не було на всій землі таких прекрасних жінок, як дочки Іова, і дав їм батько їхню спадщину між братами їхніми.	And there were not found in comparison with the daughters of Job, fairer women than they in all the world: and their father gave them an inheritance among their brethren.
16	16
Після того Іов жив сто сорок років, і бачив синів своїх і синів синів до четвертого роду;	And Job lived after his affliction a hundred and seventy years: and all the years he lived were two hundred and forty: and Job saw his sons and his sons' sons, the fourth generation.
17	17
і помер Іов у старості, насичений днями^*.	And Job died, an old man and full of days:
