| The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king of Israel in Jerusalem. | Слова Екклезіаста, сина Давидового, царя в Єрусалимі. |

| Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. | Суєта суєт, сказав Екклезіаст, суєта суєт, — усе суєта! |

| What advantage is there to a man in all his labour that he takes under the sun? | Що користи людині від усіх трудів її, якими трудиться вона під сонцем? |

|
| A generation goes, and a generation comes: but the earth stands for ever. | Рід проходить, і рід приходить, а земля перебуває повіки. |
|

|
| And the sun arises, and the sun goes down and draws toward its place; | Сходить сонце, і заходить сонце, і поспішає до місця свого, де воно сходить. |
|

|
| arising there it proceeds southward, and goes round toward the north. The wind goes round and round, and the wind returns to its circuits. | Іде вітер до півдня, і переходить до півночі, кружляє, кружляє на шляху своєму, і повертається вітер на кола свої. |

| All the rivers run into the sea; and yet the sea is not filled: to the place whence the rivers come, thither they return again. | Всі ріки течуть у море, але море не переповнюється: до того місця, звідки ріки течуть, вони повертаються, щоб знову текти. |

| All things are full of labour; a man will not be able to speak of them: neither shall the eye be satisfied with seeing, neither shall the ear be filled with hearing. | Усі речі — у труді: не може людина переказати всього; не насититься око зором, не наповниться вухо слуханням. |

| What is that which has been? the very thing which shall be: and what is that which has been done? the very thing which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. | Що було, те і буде; і що робилося, те і буде робитися, і немає нічого нового під сонцем. |

| Who is he that shall speak and say, Behold, this is new? it has already been in the ages that have passed before us. | Буває щось, про що говорять: «дивись, ось це нове»; але це було вже у віках, які були раніше за нас. |

| There is no memorial to the first things; neither to the things that have been last shall their memorial be with them that shall be at the last time. | Немає пам’яті про минуле; та й про те, що буде, не залишиться пам’яті у тих, які будуть опісля. |

| I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. | Я, Екклезіаст, був царем над Ізраїлем у Єрусалимі; |

| And I applied my heart to seek out and examine by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, for God has given to the sons of men an evil trouble to be troubled therewith. | і віддав я серце моє тому, щоб дослідити і випробувати мудрістю все, що робиться під небом: це важке заняття дав Бог синам людським, щоб вони вправлялися в ньому. |

| I beheld all the works that were wrought under the sun; and, behold, all were vanity and waywardness of spirit. | Бачив я всі діла, які чиняться під сонцем, і ось, усе — суєта і томління духу! |

| That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and deficiency cannot be numbered. | Криве не може зробитися прямим, і чого нема, того не можна рахувати. |

| I spoke in my heart, saying, Behold, I am increased, and have acquired wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem: also I applied my heart to know wisdom and knowledge. | Говорив я із серцем моїм так: ось, я звеличився і придбав мудрости більше за всіх, які були раніше мене над Єрусалимом, і серце моє бачило багато мудрости і знання. |

| And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit. | І віддав я серце моє тому, щоб пізнати мудрість і пізнати безумство і глупоту: дізнався, що і це — томління духу; |

| For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow. | тому що у великій мудрості багато печалі; і хто примножує пізнання, примножує скорботу. |
