| Слова Екклезіаста, сина Давидового, царя в Єрусалимі. | The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king of Israel in Jerusalem. |

| Суєта суєт, сказав Екклезіаст, суєта суєт, — усе суєта! | Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. |
|

|
| Що користи людині від усіх трудів її, якими трудиться вона під сонцем? | What advantage is there to a man in all his labour that he takes under the sun? |
|

|
| Рід проходить, і рід приходить, а земля перебуває повіки. | A generation goes, and a generation comes: but the earth stands for ever. |
|

|
| Сходить сонце, і заходить сонце, і поспішає до місця свого, де воно сходить. | And the sun arises, and the sun goes down and draws toward its place; |

| Іде вітер до півдня, і переходить до півночі, кружляє, кружляє на шляху своєму, і повертається вітер на кола свої. | arising there it proceeds southward, and goes round toward the north. The wind goes round and round, and the wind returns to its circuits. |

| Всі ріки течуть у море, але море не переповнюється: до того місця, звідки ріки течуть, вони повертаються, щоб знову текти. | All the rivers run into the sea; and yet the sea is not filled: to the place whence the rivers come, thither they return again. |

| Усі речі — у труді: не може людина переказати всього; не насититься око зором, не наповниться вухо слуханням. | All things are full of labour; a man will not be able to speak of them: neither shall the eye be satisfied with seeing, neither shall the ear be filled with hearing. |

| Що було, те і буде; і що робилося, те і буде робитися, і немає нічого нового під сонцем. | What is that which has been? the very thing which shall be: and what is that which has been done? the very thing which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. |

| Буває щось, про що говорять: «дивись, ось це нове»; але це було вже у віках, які були раніше за нас. | Who is he that shall speak and say, Behold, this is new? it has already been in the ages that have passed before us. |
|

| Немає пам’яті про минуле; та й про те, що буде, не залишиться пам’яті у тих, які будуть опісля. | There is no memorial to the first things; neither to the things that have been last shall their memorial be with them that shall be at the last time. |
|

| Я, Екклезіаст, був царем над Ізраїлем у Єрусалимі; | I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem. |

| і віддав я серце моє тому, щоб дослідити і випробувати мудрістю все, що робиться під небом: це важке заняття дав Бог синам людським, щоб вони вправлялися в ньому. | And I applied my heart to seek out and examine by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, for God has given to the sons of men an evil trouble to be troubled therewith. |

| Бачив я всі діла, які чиняться під сонцем, і ось, усе — суєта і томління духу! | I beheld all the works that were wrought under the sun; and, behold, all were vanity and waywardness of spirit. |

| Криве не може зробитися прямим, і чого нема, того не можна рахувати. | That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and deficiency cannot be numbered. |

| Говорив я із серцем моїм так: ось, я звеличився і придбав мудрости більше за всіх, які були раніше мене над Єрусалимом, і серце моє бачило багато мудрости і знання. | I spoke in my heart, saying, Behold, I am increased, and have acquired wisdom beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem: also I applied my heart to know wisdom and knowledge. |

| І віддав я серце моє тому, щоб пізнати мудрість і пізнати безумство і глупоту: дізнався, що і це — томління духу; | And my heart knew much—wisdom, and knowledge, parables and understanding: I perceived that this also is waywardness of spirit. |

| тому що у великій мудрості багато печалі; і хто примножує пізнання, примножує скорботу. | For in the abundance of wisdom is abundance of knowledge; and he that increases knowledge will increase sorrow. |
