| And Sara the wife of Abram bore him no children; and she had an Egyptian maid, whose name was Agar. | Але Сара, дружина Аврамова, не народжувала йому. У неї була служниця, єгиптянка, на ім’я Агар. |

| And Sara said to Abram, Behold, the Lord has restrained me from bearing, go therefore in to my maid, that I may get children for myself through her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sara. | І сказала Сара Авраму: ось, Господь закрив утробу мою, щоб я не народжувала; увійди ж до служниці моєї: можливо, я буду мати дітей від неї. Аврам послухався слів Сари. |

| So Sara the wife of Abram having taken Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Chanaan, gave her to Abram her husband as a wife to him. | І взяла Сара, дружина Аврамова, служницю свою, єгиптянку Агар, після десяти років перебування Аврамового в землі Ханаанській, і дала її Авраму, чоловіку своєму, за дружину. |

| And he went in to Agar, and she conceived, and saw that she was with child, and her mistress was dishonoured before her. | Він увійшов до Агарі, і вона зачала. Побачивши ж, що зачала, вона стала зневажати господиню свою. |

| And Sara said to Abram, I am injured by thee; I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and when I saw that she was with child, I was dishonoured before her. The Lord judge between me and thee. | І сказала Сара Авраму: в обра́зі моїй винен ти; я віддала служницю мою в надра твої; а вона, побачивши, що зачала, стала нехтувати мене; Господь нехай буде суддею між мною і між тобою. |

| And Abram said to Sara, Behold thy handmaid is in thy hands, use her as it may seem good to thee. And Sara afflicted her, and she fled from her face. | Аврам сказав Сарі: ось, служниця твоя у твоїх руках; роби з нею, що тобі завгодно. І Сара почала пригноблювати її, і вона втекла від неї. |

| And an angel of the Lord found her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Sur. | І знайшов її ангел Господній біля джерела води в пустелі, біля джерела на дорозі до Сура. |

| And the angel of the Lord said to her, Agar, Sara's maid, whence comest thou, and whither goest thou? and she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sara. | І сказав [їй ангел Господній]: Агар, служнице Сарина! звідки ти прийшла і куди йдеш? Вона сказала: я втікаю від лиця Сари, господині моєї. |

| And the angel of the Lord said to her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. | Ангел Господній сказав їй: повернися до господині своєї і підкорися їй. |

| And the angel of the Lord said to her, I will surely multiply thy seed, and it shall not be numbered for multitude. | І сказав їй ангел Господній: примножуючи, примножу нащадків твоїх, так що не можна буде й перерахувати їх від безлічі. |

| And the angel of the Lord said to her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ismael, for the Lord hath hearkened to thy humiliation. | І ще сказав їй ангел Господній: ось, ти вагітна, і народиш сина, і наречеш йому ім’я Ізмаїл, тому що почув Господь страждання твоє; |

| He shall be a wild man, his hands against all, and the hands of all against him, and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. | він буде між людьми, як дикий осел; руки його на всіх, і руки усіх на нього; жити буде він перед лицем усіх братів своїх. |

| And she called the name of the Lord God who spoke to her, Thou art God who seest me; for she said, For I have openly seen him that appeared to me. | І нарекла [Агар] Господа, Який говорив до неї, цим ім’ям: Ти Бог, що бачиш мене. Бо сказала вона: дійсно я бачила тут у слід Того, Хто бачить мене. |

| Therefore she called the well, The well of him whom I have openly seen; behold it is between Cades and Barad. | Тому джерело те називається: Беер-лахай-рої*. Воно знаходиться між Кадесом і між Баредом. |

| And Agar bore a son to Abram; and Abram called the name of his son which Agar bore to him, Ismael. | Агар народила Авраму сина; і дав [Аврам] ім’я синові своєму, що народився від Агарі: Ізмаїл. |

| And Abram was eighty-six years old, when Agar bore Ismael to Abram. | Аврам був вісімдесяти шести років, коли Агар народила Авраму Ізмаїла. |
