Furthermore when Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his host were slain in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judea the second time, and with them the chief strength of his host:

И# и3д0ша путeмъ, и4же (ведeтъ) въ галг†лы, и3 њполчи1шасz на месалHfъ, и4же є4сть во ґрви1лэхъ, и3 взsша є3го2, и3 поби1ша дyшъ человёческихъ мн0гw.	who went forth by the way that leadeth to Galgala, and pitched their tents before Masaloth, which is in Arbela, and after they had won it, they slew much people.

И# въ мцcъ пeрвый лёта сто2 пzтьдесsтъ вторaгw, приступи1ша в0ини ко їеrли1му,	Also the first month of the hundred fifty and second year they encamped before Jerusalem:

и3 востaша и3 и3д0ша въ верeю въ двaдесzти тhсzщахъ мужeй и3 двЁ тhсzщы к0нникwвъ.	from whence they removed, and went to Berea, with twenty thousand footmen and two thousand horsemen.

Їyда же бЁ њполчeнъ во є3лаaсэ, и3 три2 тhсzщы мужeй и3збрaнныхъ съ ни1мъ.	Now Judas had pitched his tents at Eleasa, and three thousand chosen men with him:

И# ви1дэша мн0жество си1лъ, ћкw мнHги сyть, и3 ўстраши1шасz ѕэлw2: и3 и3збэг0ша мн0зи t полкA, и3 не њстaсz t ни1хъ т0кмw џсмь сHтъ мужeй.	who seeing the multitude of the other army to be so great, were sore afraid; whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host, insomuch as there abode of them no more but eight hundred men.

И# ви1дэ їyда, ћкw расточи1сz п0лкъ є3гw2, и3 брaнь њскорблsше є3го2: и3 сокруши1сz сeрдцемъ, ћкw не и3мёzше врeмене собрaти и5хъ,	When Judas therefore saw that his host slipt away, and that the battle pressed upon him, he was sore troubled in mind, and much distressed, for that he had no time to gather them together.

и3 њслабЁ и3 речE њстaвшымъ: востaнемъ и3 взhдемъ на супостaты нaшz, ѓще м0жемъ рaтовати проти1ву и4хъ.	Nevertheless unto them that remained he said, Let us arise and go up against our enemies, if peradventure we may be able to fight with them.

И# tвращaху є3го2 рекyще: не м0жемъ, но спасeмъ т0кмw дyшы сво‰ нн7э, и3 возврати1мсz со брaтіею нaшею, и3 њполчи1мсz на ни1хъ: мh же мaли.	But they dehorted him, saying, We shall never be able: let us now rather save our lives, and hereafter we will return with our brethren, and fight against them: for we are but few.

И# речE їyда: не бyди ми2 сотвори1ти вeщь сію2, є4же бэжaти t ни1хъ: и3 ѓще прибли1жисz врeмz нaше, ќмремъ мyжественнw рaди брaтіи нaшеz и3 не њстaвимъ вины2 слaвэ нaшей.	Then Judas said, God forbid that I should do this thing, and flee away from them: if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our honour.

И# воздви1жесz си1ла t полкA и3 стA во срётеніе и5мъ, и3 разлучи1шасz кHнницы на двЁ ч†сти, и3 прaщницы и3 стрэлцы2 пред8идsху си1лэ, и3 предподви1жницы вси2 си1льніи.	With that the host of Bacchides removed out of their tents, and stood over against them, their horsemen being divided into two troops, and their slingers and archers going before the host, and they that marched in the foreward were all mighty men.

Вакхjдъ же бЁ на деснёмъ р0зэ, и3 прибли1жисz п0лкъ t двою2 стран{, и3 возглашaху трубaми.	As for Bacchides, he was in the right wing: so the host drew near on the two parts, and sounded their trumpets.

И# воструби1ша, и5же бsху t страны2 їyдины, и3 тjи трубaми: и3 поколебaсz землS t глaса њполчeній. и3 бhсть брaнь сражeна t ќтра дaже до вeчера.	They also of Judas' side, even they sounded their trumpets also, so that the earth shook at the noise of the armies, and the battle continued from morning till night.

И# ви1дэ їyда, ћкw вакхjдъ и3 крёпость полкA въ деснhхъ: и3 собрaшасz къ немY вси2 крёпцыи сeрдцемъ:	Now when Judas perceived that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right side, he took with him all the hardy men,

и3 сотрeсz деснhй р0гъ t ни1хъ, и3 гнaше в8слёдъ и4хъ дaже до горы2 ґзHта.	who discomfited the right wing, and pursued them unto the mount Azotus.

И# сyщіи въ лёвэмъ р0зэ ви1дэша, ћкw сотрeсz деснhй р0гъ, и3 њбрати1шасz по стопaмъ ї{динымъ и3 сyщихъ съ ни1мъ созади2.	But when they of the left wing saw that they of the right wing were discomfited, they followed upon Judas and those that were with him hard at the heels from behind:

И# њтzгчи1сz брaнь, и3 пад0ша ћзвени мн0зи t си1хъ и3 t тёхъ:	whereupon there was a sore battle, insomuch as many were slain on both parts.
18	18
и3 їyда падE, пр0чіи же бэжaша.	Judas also was killed, and the remnant fled.
19	19
И# взsста їwнаfaнъ и3 сjмwнъ їyду брaта своего2 и3 погреб0ста є3го2 во гр0бэ nтє1цъ є3гw2 въ мwди1нэ.	Then Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of his fathers in Modin.

И# плaкашасz њ нeмъ и3 рыдaше є3го2 вeсь ї}ль плaчемъ вeліимъ, и3 сётоваху дни6 мнHги и3 рек0ша:	Moreover they bewailed him, and all Israel made great lamentation for him, and mourned many days, saying,

кaкw падE си1льный спасazй ї}лz;	How is the valiant man fallen, that delivered Israel!

ПрHчаz же словeсъ и3 брaней їyдиныхъ и3 благи1хъ мyжествъ, и5хже сотвори2, и3 вели1чєства є3гw2, не сyть пи6сана: мнHга бо бsху ѕэлw2.	As for the other things concerning Judas and his wars, and the noble acts which he did, and his greatness, they are not written, for they were very many.

И# бhсть по преставлeніи їyдинэ, проник0ша беззак0нніи во всёхъ предёлэхъ ї}левыхъ, и3 прозzб0ша вси2 дёлающіи беззак0ніе.	Now after the death of Judas the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the coasts of Israel, and there arose up all such as wrought iniquity.

Во дни6 w4ны бhсть глaдъ вели1къ ѕэлw2, и3 tступи2 странA съ ни1ми.	In those days also was there a very great famine, by reason whereof the country revolted, and went with them.
25	25
И# и3збрA вакхjдъ нечести1выхъ мужeй и3 постaви и5хъ госп0діzми страны2.	Then Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country.

И# и3скaху и3 и3спытaху другHвъ їyдиныхъ и3 привождaху тёхъ къ вакхjду: и3 мстsше и5мъ и3 посмэвaшесz и5мъ.	And they made enquiry and search for Judas' friends, and brought them unto Bacchides, who took vengeance of them, and used them despitefully.

И# бhсть ск0рбь вели1ка во ї}ли, ћже не бhсть t днjй, въ ни1хже не kви1сz прbр0къ во ї}ли.	So was there a great affliction in Israel, the like whereof was not since the time that a prophet was not seen among them.

И# собрaшасz вси2 дрyзи ї{дины и3 рек0ша їwнаfaну:	For this cause all Judas' friends came together, and said unto Jonathan,

tнeлэже брaтъ тв0й їyда скончaсz, и3 мyжъ под0бенъ є3мY нёсть и3зhти проти1ву врагHвъ и3 вакхjда и3 враждyющихъ kзhку нaшему:	Since thy brother Judas died, we have no man like him to go forth against our enemies, and Bacchides, and against them of our nation that are adversaries to us.

нн7э u5бо тебE днeсь и3збрaхомъ, є4же бhти вмёстw є3гw2 нaмъ въ начaлника и3 вождA, є4же рaтовати во брaни нaшей.	Now therefore we have chosen thee this day to be our prince and captain in his stead, that thou mayest fight our battles.

И# пріS їwнаfaнъ во врeмz џно начaлство и3 востA вмёстw їyды брaта своегw2.	Upon this Jonathan took the governance upon him at that time, and rose up instead of his brother Judas.

И# познA вакхjдъ и3 и3скaше є3го2 ўби1ти.	But when Bacchides gat knowledge thereof, he sought for to slay him.

И# познA їwнаfaнъ и3 сjмwнъ брaтъ є3гw2 и3 вси2 и5же съ ни1мъ (бsху), и3 побэг0ша въ пустhню fекyе, и3 њполчи1шасz при водЁ рвA ґсфaра.	Then Jonathan, and Simon his brother, and all that were with him, perceiving that, fled into the wilderness of Thecoe, and pitched their tents by the water of the pool Asphar.

И# познA вакхjдъ въ дeнь суббHтъ, и3 прeйде сaмъ и3 вси2 вHи є3гw2 њб8 nнY странY їoрдaна.	Which when Bacchides understood, he came near to Jordan with all his host upon the sabbath day.

И# послA їwнаfaнъ брaта своего2 вождA нар0ду и3 моли2 наватewвъ другHвъ свои1хъ предстaвити и5мъ приготовлeніе и4хъ мн0гое.	Now Jonathan had sent his brother John, a captain of the people, to pray his friends the Nabathites, that they might leave with them their carriage, which was much.

И# и3зыд0ша сhнове їамвр‡ины t мидaвы, и3 ћша їwaнна и3 вс‰ є3ли6ка и3мЁ, и3 tид0ша и3мyще т†.	But the children of Jambri came out of Medaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went their way with it.

По словесёхъ же си1хъ возвэсти1ша їwнаfaну и3 сjмwну брaту є3гw2, ћкw сhнове їамвр‡ины творsтъ брaкъ вели1кій и3 ведyтъ невёсту t надавafа, дщeрь є3ди1нагw t вели1кихъвельм0жъ ханаaнскихъ, съ г0рдостію вeліею.	After this came word to Jonathan and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride from Nadabatha with a great train, as being the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan.

И# помzнyша їwaнна брaта своего2, и3 взыд0ша, и3 скрhшасz под8 сёнію горы2:	Therefore they remembered John their brother, and went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain:

и3 воздви1гнуша џчи свои2 и3 ви1дэша, и3 сE, пли1щь и3 ўгот0ваніе мн0гое, и3 жени1хъ и3зhде и3 дрyзи є3гw2 и3 брaтіz є3гw2 бо срётеніе и5мъ съ тmмп†ны и3 мусікjами и3 nр{жіи мн0гими:	where they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and, behold, there was much ado and great carriage: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends and brethren, to meet them with drums, and instruments of music, and many weapons.

и3 востaша на ни1хъ t засaды и5же при їwнаfaнэ и3 ўби1ша и5хъ, и3 пад0ша ћзвени мн0зи, пр0чіи же бэг0ша въ г0ру: и3 взsша вс‰ коры6сти и4хъ.	Then Jonathan and they that were with him rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and made a slaughter of them in such sort, as many fell down dead, and the remnant fled into the mountain, and they took all their spoils.

И# њбрати1сz брaкъ въ сётованіе, и3 глaсъ мусікjи и4хъ въ плaчь.	Thus was the marriage turned into mourning, and the noise of their melody into lamentation.

И# tмсти1ша tмщeніе кр0ве брaта своегw2 и3 возврати1шасz на брeгъ їoрдaнскій.	So when they had avenged fully the blood of their brother, they turned again to the marsh of Jordan.

И# слhша вакхjдъ и3 пріи1де въ дeнь суббHтный дaже до брегHвъ їoрдaнскихъ съ си1лою мн0гою.	Now when Bacchides heard hereof, he came on the sabbath day unto the banks of Jordan with a great power.

И# речE ко свои6мъ їwнаfaнъ: востaнемъ нн7э и3 њполчи1мсz за дyшы нaшz, нёсть бо днeсь ћкоже вчерA и3 трeтіzгw днE:	Then Jonathan said to his company, Let us go up now and fight for our lives, for it standeth not with us to day, as in time past:

сe бо, брaнь проти1ву нaсъ и3 созади2 нaсъ: водa же їoрдaнскаz сю1ду и3 сю1ду, и3 блaто и3 лёсъ, и3 нёсть мёста, є4же ўклони1тисz:	for, behold, the battle is before us and behind us, and the water of Jordan on this side and that side, the marsh likewise and wood, neither is there place for us to turn aside.

нн7э u5бо возопjйте на нб7о, да и3збaвитесz t рyкъ врагHвъ вaшихъ. и3 срази1сz брaнь.	Wherefore cry ye now unto heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies.

И# прострE їwнаfaнъ рyку свою2 ўби1ти вакхjда, и3 ўклони1сz и3 негw2 вспsть.	With that they joined battle, and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides, but he turned back from him.

И# вскочи2 їwнаfaнъ и3 и5же съ ни1мъ во їoрдaнъ, и3 преплывaху на њб8 nнY странY, и3 не преид0ша по ни1хъ їoрдaна.	Then Jonathan and they that were with him leapt into Jordan, and swam over unto the farther bank: howbeit the other passed not over Jordan unto them.

И# пад0ша t страны2 вакхjдины днE џнагw ћкw тhсzща мужeй.	So there were slain of Bacchides' side that day about a thousand men.

И# возврати1сz во їеrли1мъ и3 создA грaды твє1рды во їудeи, твердhню во їеріхHнэ и3 ћже во є3ммаyмэ и3 веfwрHнэ, и3 веfи1ли и3 fемнafэ, и3 фараfHнэ и3 тефHнэ, со стэнaми выс0кими и3 вратaми и3 зав0рами,	Afterward returned Bacchides to Jerusalem, and repaired the strong cities in Judea; the fort in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Bethhoron, and Bethel, and Thamnatha, Pharathoni, and Taphon, these did he strengthen with high walls, with gates, and with bars.

и3 постaви стрaжу въ ни1хъ, є4же враждовaти ї}лю:	And in them he set a garrison, that they might work malice upon Israel.

и3 ўтверди2 грaдъ и4же въ веfсyрэ, и3 газaру, и3 краегрaдіе, и3 постaви въ ни1хъ си6лы и3 предложeніе брaшенъ:	He fortified also the city Bethsura, and Gazara, and the tower, and put forces in them, and provision of victuals.

и3 взS сhны вождHвъ страны2 въ зал0гъ и3 посади2 и5хъ въ краегрaдіи во їеrли1мэ под8 стрaжею.	Besides, he took the chief men's sons in the country for hostages, and put them into the tower at Jerusalem to be kept.

И# въ лёто сто2 пzтьдесsтъ трeтіе мцcа вторaгw, заповёда ґлкjмъ разори1ти стёну дворA с™hхъ внyтреннzгw, и3 разори2 дэлA прbр0кwвъ, и3 начA разорsти.	Moreover in the hundred fifty and third year, in the second month, Alcimus commanded that the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary should be pulled down; he pulled down also the works of the prophets.

Во врeмz џно поражeнъ бhсть ґлкjмъ, и3 воспzти1шасz дэлA є3гw2, и3 загради1шасz ўстA є3гw2, и3 разслабЁ и3 не можaше ктомY глаг0лати сл0ва и3 заповёдати њ д0мэ своeмъ.	And as he began to pull down, even at that time was Alcimus plagued, and his enterprizes hindered: for his mouth was stopped, and he was taken with a palsy, so that he could no more speak any thing, nor give order concerning his house.

И# ќмре ґлкjмъ во врeмz џно съ мyкою вeліею.	So Alcimus died at that time with great torment.

И# ви1дэ вакхjдъ, ћкw ќмре ґлкjмъ, и3 возврати1сz ко царю2. и3 ўмолчA землS їyдина лBта двA.	Now when Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead, he returned to the king: whereupon the land of Juda was in rest two years.

И# совэщaша вси2 беззакHнницы рекyще: сE, їwнаfaнъ и3 и5же съ ни1мъ въ пок0и њбитaютъ ўповaюще: нн7э u5бо наведeмъ вакхjда, и3 поимaетъ и5хъ всёхъ во є3ди1ну н0щь.	Then all the ungodly men held a council, saying, Behold, Jonathan and his company are at ease, and dwell without care: now therefore we will bring Bacchides hither, who shall take them all in one night.

И# шeдше совэщaшасz съ ни1мъ.	So they went and consulted with him.

И# востA и3ти2 съ си1лою мн0гою и3 послA є3пістHліи тaй всBмъ спобори1телємъ є3гw2, и5же во їудeи, да и4мутъ їwнаfaна и3 сyщихъ съ ни1мъ. и3 не возмог0ша, ћкw познaсz и5мъ совётъ и4хъ.	Then removed he, and came with a great host, and sent letters privily to his adherents in Judea, that they should take Jonathan and those that were with him: howbeit they could not, because their counsel was known unto them.

И# ћша t мужeй страны2 начaлникwвъ ѕл0бы пzтьдесsтъ мужeй и3 ўби1ша и5хъ.	Wherefore they took of the men of the country, that were authors of that mischief, about fifty persons, and slew them.

И# tи1де їwнаfaнъ и3 сjмwнъ и3 и5же съ ни1ми въ веfвасjю, ћже въ пустhни, и3 создA разорє1наz є3S и3 ўкрэпи2 ю5.	Afterward Jonathan, and Simon, and they that were with him, got them away to Bethbasi, which is in the wilderness, and they repaired the decays thereof, and made it strong.

И# познA вакхjдъ, и3 собрA всE мн0жество своE, и3 сyщымъ t їудeи возвэсти2.	Which thing when Bacchides knew, he gathered together all his host, and sent word to them that were of Judea.

И# шeдъ њполчи1сz на веfвасjю, и3 воевaше ю5 дни6 мнHги, и3 сотвори2 мих†ны.	Then went he and laid siege against Bethbasi; and they fought against it a long season, and made engines of war.

И# њстaви їwнаfaнъ сjмwна брaта своего2 во грaдэ, и3 и3зhде во странY, и3 и3зhде въ числЁ.	But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city, and went forth himself into the country, and with a certain number went he forth.

И# порази2 nдоми1ра и3 брaтію є3гw2 и3 сынHвъ фасірHнихъ въ жили1щихъ и4хъ, и3 начA и3збивaти и3 восходи1ти въ си1лахъ.	And he smote Odonarres and his brethren, and the children of Phasiron in their tent.

Сjмwнъ же и3 и5же съ ни1мъ и3зыд0ша и3з8 грaда и3 пожг0ша мих†ны,	And when he began to smite them, and came up with his forces, Simon and his company went out of the city, and burned up the engines of war,

и3 рaтоваху проти1ву вакхjда, и3 сотрeсz t ни1хъ, и3 њѕлоблsху є3го2 ѕэлw2, ћкw бЁ совётъ є3гw2 и3 пох0дъ є3гw2 вотщE.	and fought against Bacchides, who was discomfited by them, and they afflicted him sore: for his counsel and travail was in vain.

И# прогнёвасz ћростію на мужeй беззак0нныхъ, совётовавшихъ є3мY пріити2 во странY, и3 ўби2 t ни1хъ мн0гихъ, и3 совэщaсz tити2 въ зeмлю свою2.	Wherefore he was very wroth at the wicked men that gave him counsel to come into the country, insomuch as he slew many of them, and purposed to return into his own country.

И# познA їwнаfaнъ и3 послA къ немY старёйшинъ состaвитими1ръ съ ни1мъ и3 tдaти и5мъ плёнъ.	Whereof when Jonathan had knowledge, he sent ambassadors unto him, to the end he should make peace with him, and deliver them the prisoners.

И# пріS, и3 сотвори2 по словесє1мъ є3гw2, и3 клsтсz є3мY не и3скaти є3мY ѕлA во вс‰ дни6 животA є3гw2.	Which thing he accepted, and did according to his demands, and sware unto him that he would never do him harm all the days of his life.

И# tдадE є3мY плёнъ, є3г0же прeжде плэни2 t земли2 їyдины: и3 возврaщьсz tи1де въ зeмлю свою2 и3 не приложи2 ктомY пріити2 въ предёлы и4хъ.	When therefore he had restored unto him the prisoners that he had taken aforetime out of the land of Judea, he returned and went his way into his own land, neither came he any more into their borders.

И# престA мeчь t ї}лz. и3 њбитA їwнаfaнъ въ махмaсэ: и3 начA їwнаfaнъ суди1ти лю1ди и3 и3стреби2 нечести1выхъ t ї}лz.	Thus the sword ceased from Israel: but Jonathan dwelt at Machmas, and began to govern the people; and he destroyed the ungodly men out of Israel.
