| In those days arose Mattathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and dwelt in Modin. |
2
2
| И# и3мsше сынHвъ пsть: їwaнна, и4же проименовaшесz гаддjсъ, | And he had five sons, Joannan, called Caddis: |
3
3
| и3 сjмwна, и4же проименовaшесz fассjсъ, | Simon, called Thassi: |
4
4
| їyду, и4же звaшесz маккавeй, | Judas, who was called Maccabeus: |
5
5
| є3леазaра, и4же проименовaшесz ґvарaнъ, и3 їwнаfaна, и4же проименовaшесz ґпфyсъ. | Eleazar, called Avaran: and Jonathan, whose surname was Apphus. |
6
6
| И# ви1дэ хулє1ніz быв†ющаz во їудeи и3 во їеrли1мэ, | And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem, |
7
7
почто2 рождeнъ є4смь ви1дэти сотрeніе людjй мои1хъ и3 сотрeніе грaда с™aгw, и3 сэдёти здЁ, внегдA предавaтисz є3мY въ рyцэ врагHвъ и3 с™hни въ рyки чужди1хъ; | he said, Woe is me! wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people, and of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy, and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers? |
8
8
| бhсть хрaмъ є3гw2 ћкw человёкъ безчeстенъ, | Her temple is become as a man without glory. |
9
9
| сосyды слaвы є3гw2 плэнeни tнесeни сyть, побіeни сyть младeнцы є3гw2 на ст0гнахъ, и3 ю4ношы є3гw2 пад0ша мечeмъ врaжіимъ: | Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity, her infants are slain in the streets, her young men with the sword of the enemy. |
10
10
| кjй kзhкъ не наслёдова цaрства є3гw2 и3 не њдержA корhстей є3гw2; | What nation hath not had a part in her kingdom, and gotten of her spoils? |
11
11
A: | All her ornaments are taken away; of a free woman she has become a bondslave. |
12
12
| и3 сE, с™†z н†ша и3 красотA нaша и3 слaва нaша њпустЁ, и3 њскверни1ша | kзhцы: | And, behold, our sanctuary, even our beauty and our glory, is laid waste, and the Gentiles have profaned it. |
13
13
| почто2 u5бо нaмъ є3щE жи1ти; | To what end therefore shall we live any longer? |
14
14
| Then Mattathias and his sons rent their clothes, and put on sackcloth, and mourned very sore. |
15
15
| In the mean while the king's officers, such as compelled the people to revolt, came into the city Modin, to make them sacrifice. |
16
16
| And when many of Israel came unto them, Mattathias also and his sons came together. |
17
17
| И# tвэщaша п0сланніи t царS и3 рёша маттаfjи глаг0люще: кнsзь и3 преслaвный и3 вeлій є3си2 во грaдэ сeмъ, и3 ўтверждeнъ въ сынёхъ и3 брaтіихъ: | Then answered the king's officers, and said to Mattathias on this wise, Thou art a ruler, and an honourable and great man in this city, and strengthened with sons and brethren: |
18
18
| now therefore come thou first, and fulfil the king's commandment, like as all the nations have done, yea, and the men of Juda also, and such as remain at Jerusalem: so shalt thou and thy house be in the number of the king's friends, and thou and thy children shall be honoured with silver and gold, and many rewards. |
19
19
| И# tвэщA маттаfjа и3 речE глaсомъ вeліимъ: ѓще и3 вси2 kзhцы въ домY цaрствіz царS слyшаютъ є3гw2, є4же tступи1ти комyждо t служeніz nтє1цъ свои1хъ, и3 соизв0лиша въ зaповэдехъ є3гw2: | Then Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice, Though all the nations that are under the king's dominion obey him, and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers, and give consent to his commandments: |
20
20
| но ѓзъ и3 сhнове мои2 и3 брaтіz мо‰ повинyемсz зак0ну nтє1цъ нaшихъ: | yet will I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers. |
21
21
| млcтивъ нaмъ (бyди, б9е), є4же њстaвити зак0нъ и3 њправд†ніz: | God forbid that we should forsake the law and the ordinances. |
22
22
| We will not hearken to the king's words, to go from our religion, either on the right hand, or the left. |
23
23
| И# ћкw престA глаг0лати словесA сі‰, приступи2 мyжъ їудeанинъ пред8 nчи1ма всёхъ жрeти въ кaпищи, є4же въ мwди1нэ, по повелёнію царeву. | Now when he had left speaking these words, there came one of the Jews in the sight of all to sacrifice on the altar which was at Modin, according to the king's commandment. |
24
24
| И# ви1дэ маттаfjа и3 возревновA, и3 вострепетaша внyтрєннzz є3гw2, и3 возжжeсz ћрость є3гw2 по судY (зак0на), и3 наскочи1въ разсэчE є3го2 въ кaпищи. | Which thing when Mattathias saw, he was inflamed with zeal, and his reins trembled, neither could he forbear to shew his anger according to judgment: wherefore he ran, and slew him upon the altar. |
25
25
| И# мyжа, є3г0же цaрь послA, и4же принуждaше жрeти, ўби2 во врeмz џно и3 кaпище разори2. | Also the king's commissioner, who compelled men to sacrifice, he killed at that time, and the altar he pulled down. |
26
26
| Thus dealt he zealously for the law of God, like as Phinees did unto Zambri the son of Salom. |
27
27
2. | And Mattathias cried throughout the city with a loud voice, saying, Whosoever is zealous of the law, and maintaineth the covenant, let him follow me. |
28
28
| И# tбэжA сaмъ и3 сhнове є3гw2 въ г0ры, и3 њстaвиша, є3ли6ка и3мёzху во грaдэ. | So he and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that ever they had in the city. |
29
29
| ТогдA снид0ша мн0зи и4щуще судA и3 прaвды въ пустhню, | Then many that sought after justice and judgment went down into the wilderness, to dwell there: |
30
30
| both they and their children, and their wives, and their cattle; because afflictions increased sore upon them. |
31
31
| И# возвэщeно бhсть мужє1мъ царє1вымъ и3 си1ламъ, и5же бsху во їеrли1мэ грaдэ давjдовэ, ћкw tид0ша мyжіе нёцыи, и5же разори1ша зaповэдь цaрску, въ мэстA т†йнаz въ пустhню. | Now when it was told the king's servants, and the host that was at Jerusalem, in the city of David, that certain men, who had broken the king's commandment, were gone down into the secret places in the wilderness, |
32
32
| И# тек0ша в8слёдъ и4хъ мн0зи, и3 пости1гше и5хъ њполчи1шасz на ни1хъ, и3 состaвиша проти1ву и4хъ брaнь въ дeнь суббHтный, | they pursued after them a great number, and having overtaken them, they camped against them, and made war against them on the sabbath day. |
33
33
| And they said unto them, Let that which ye have done hitherto suffice; come forth, and do according to the commandment of the king, and ye shall live. |
34
34
| But they said, We will not come forth, neither will we do the king's commandment, to profane the sabbath day. |
35
35
| So then they gave them the battle with all speed. |
36
36
| И# не tвэщaша и5мъ, нижE кaмене верг0ша на ни1хъ, нижE загради1ша мёстъ тaйныхъ, рекyще: | Howbeit they answered them not, neither cast they a stone at them, nor stopped the places where they lay hid; |
37
37
| ќмремъ вси2 въ простотЁ нaшей, свидётелє бyдутъ на нaсъ нeбо и3 землS, ћкw непрaвw погублsете нaсъ. | but said, Let us die all in our innocency: heaven and earth shall testify for us, that ye put us to death wrongfully. |
38
38
| И# востaша на ни1хъ въ брaни въ суббw6ты, и3 ўмр0ша сjи и3 жєны2 и4хъ, и3 сhнове и4хъ и3 ск0ти и4хъ, дaже до тhсzщи дyшъ челwвёкъ. | So they rose up against them in battle on the sabbath, and they slew them, with their wives and children, and their cattle, to the number of a thousand people. |
39
39
| И# познA маттаfjа и3 дрyзи є3гw2, и3 плaкашасz њ ни1хъ ѕэлw2. | Now when Mattathias and his friends understood hereof, they mourned for them right sore. |
40
40
| И# речE мyжъ и4скреннему своемY: ѓще вси2 сотвори1мъ, ћкоже брaтіz н†ша сотвори1ша, и3 не воwполчи1мсz на kзhки њ душaхъ нaшихъ и3 њправдaніихъ нaшихъ, нн7э нaсъ ск0рw и3скоренsтъ t земли2. | And one of them said to another, If we all do as our brethren have done, and fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen, they will now quickly root us out of the earth. |
41
41
| At that time therefore they decreed, saying, Whosoever shall come to make battle with us on the sabbath day, we will fight against him: neither will we die all, as our brethren that were murdered in the secret places. |
42
42
| ТогдA собрaсz къ ни6мъ с0нмище їудeйское крёпцыи въси1лэ t ї}лz, всsкъ соизволszй зак0ну: | Then came there unto him a company of Assideans, who were mighty men of Israel, even all such as were voluntarily devoted unto the law. |
43
43
| Also all they that fled for persecution joined themselves unto them, and were a stay unto them. |
44
44
| So they joined their forces, and smote sinful men in their anger, and wicked men in their wrath: but the rest fled to the heathen for succour. |
45
45
| И# њбhде маттаfjа и3 дрyзи є3гw2, и3 разори1ша к†пища, | Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars: |
46
46
| и3 њбрёзаша џтроки неwбрBзаныz, є3ли1кихъ њбрэт0ша въ предёлэхъ ї}левыхъ въ си1лэ, | and what children soever they found within the coast of Israel uncircumcised, those they circumcised valiantly. |
47
47
| и3 погнaша сынHвъ гордhни, и3 ўспЁ дёло въ рукY и4хъ: | They pursued also after the proud men, and the work prospered in their hand. |
48
48
| и3 ўдержaша зак0нъ t руки2 kзhкwвъ и3 t руки2 царeй, и3 не дaша р0га грёшнику. | So they recovered the law out of the hand of the Gentiles, and out of the hand of kings, neither suffered they the sinner to triumph. |
49
49
| И# прибли1жишасz днjе маттаfjи ўмрeти, и3 речE сынHмъ свои6мъ: нн7э ўкрэпи1сz гордhнz и3 њбличeніе, и3 врeмz низвращeніz и3 гнёвъ ћрости: | Now when the time drew near that Mattathias should die, he said unto his sons, Now have pride and rebuke gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of indignation: |
50
50
| now therefore, my sons, be ye zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers. |
51
51
| Помzни1те дэлA nтє1цъ нaшихъ ±же сотвори1ша вър0дэхъ свои1хъ, и3 пріи1мете слaву вeлію и3 и4мz вёчное. | Call to remembrance what acts our fathers did in their time; so shall ye receive great honour and an everlasting name. |
52
52
| Ґвраaмъ не во и3скушeніи ли њбрётенъ є4сть вёренъ, и3 вмэни1сz є3мY въ прaвду; | Was not Abraham found faithful in temptation, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness? |

62
62
| И# t словeсъ мyжа грёшна не ўб0йтесz, понeже слaва є3гw2 въ моты6ла и3 въ чeрвіе: | Fear not then the words of a sinful man: for his glory shall be dung and worms. |
63
63
