Chapter 8	Глава 8

And the Lord said to Joshua, Fear not, nor be timorous: take with thee all the men of war, and arise, go up to Gai; behold, I have given into thy hands the king of Gai, and his land.	Господь сказав Ісусові: не бійся і не жахайся; візьми із собою весь народ, здатний до війни, і, вставши, піди до Гая; ось, Я віддаю в руки твої царя Гайського і народ його, місто його і землю його;

And thou shalt do to Gai, as thou didst to Jericho and its king; and thou shalt take to thyself the spoil of its cattle; set now for thyself an ambush for the city behind.	зроби з Гаєм і царем його те саме, що зробив ти з Єрихоном і царем його, тільки здобич його і худобу його розділіть собі; зроби засідку за містом.

And Joshua and all the men of war rose to go up to Gai; and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men, and he sent them away by night.	Ісус і весь народ, здатний до війни, встав, щоб іти до Гая, і вибрав Ісус тридцять тисяч чоловік хоробрих і послав їх уночі,

And he charged them, saying, Do ye lie in ambush behind the city: do not go far from the city, and ye shall all be ready.	і дав їм наказ і сказав: дивіться, ви будете складати засідку біля міста позаду міста; не відходьте далеко від міста і будьте всі готові;

And I and all with me will draw near to the city: and it shall come to pass when the inhabitants of Gai shall come forth to meet us, as before, that we will flee from before them.	а я і весь народ, який зі мною, підійдемо до міста; і коли [жителі Гая] виступлять проти нас, як і раніше, то ми побіжимо від них;

And when they shall come out after us, we will draw them away from the city; and they will say, These men flee from before us, as also before.	вони підуть за нами, так що ми відволічемо їх від міста; бо вони скажуть: «біжать від нас, як і раніше»; коли ми побіжимо від них,

And ye shall rise up out of the ambuscade, and go into the city.	тоді ви встаньте із засідки і заволодійте містом, і Господь Бог ваш віддасть його в руки ваші;

Ye shall do according to this word, lo! I have commanded you.	коли візьмете місто, запаліть місто вогнем, за словом Господнім зробіть; дивіться, я повеліваю вам.

And Joshua sent them, and they went to lie in ambush; and they lay between Bæthel and Gai, westward of Gai.	Таким чином послав їх Ісус, і вони пішли в засідку і засіли між Вефилем і між Гаєм, із західного боку Гая; а Ісус у ту ніч ночував серед народу.

And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people; and he went up, he and the elders before the people to Gai.	Вставши рано-вранці, Ісус оглянув народ, і пішов він і старійшини Ізраїлеві перед народом до Гая;

And all the men of war went up with him, and they went forward and came over against the city eastward.	і весь народ, здатний до війни, який був з ним, пішов, наблизився і підійшов до міста [зі східного боку, засідка ж була на захід від міста],

And the ambuscade was on the west side of the city.	і поставив стан з північної сторони Гая, а між ним і Гаєм була долина. Потім узяв він близько п’яти тисяч чоловік і посадив їх у засідці між Вефилем і Гаєм, із західного боку міста.

And it came to pass when the king of Gai saw it, he hasted and went out to meet them direct to the battle, he and all the people that were with him: and he knew not that there was an ambuscade formed against him behind the city.	Коли побачив це цар Гайський, негайно з жителями міста, вставши рано, виступив проти Ізраїля на бій, він і весь народ його, на призначене місце перед рівниною; а він не знав, що для нього є засідка позаду міста [його].

And Joshua and Israel saw, and retreated from before them.	Ісус і весь Ізраїль, начебто вражені ними, побігли до пустелі;

And they pursued after the children of Israel, and they themselves went to a distance from the city.	а вони покликали весь народ, який був у місті, щоб переслідувати їх, і, переслідуючи Ісуса, віддалилися від міста;

There was no one left in Gai who did not pursue after Israel; and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.	у Гаї і Вефилі не залишилося жодної людини, яка не погналася б за Ізраїлем; і місто своє вони залишили відчиненим, переслідуючи Ізраїля.

And the Lord said to Joshua, Stretch forth thy hand with the spear that is in thy hand toward the city, for I have delivered it into thy hands; and the liers in wait shall rise up quickly out of their place.	Тоді Господь сказав Ісусові: простягни спис, що у руці твоїй, до Гая, бо Я віддам його в руки твої [і засідка негайно встане з місця свого]. Ісус простяг [руку свою і] спис, що був у його руці, до міста.

And Joshua stretched out his hand and his spear toward the city, and the ambuscade rose up quickly out of their place; and they came forth when he stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city, and took it; and they hasted and burnt the city with fire.	Ті, що сиділи у засідці, негайно встали з місця свого і побігли, як тільки він простяг руку свою, ввійшли в місто і взяли його і негайно запалили місто вогнем.

And when the inhabitants of Gai looked round behind them, then they saw the smoke going up out of the city to heaven, and they were no longer able to flee this way or that way.	Жителі Гая, оглянувшись назад, побачили, що дим від міста піднімався до неба. І не було для них місця, куди б бігти — ні туди ні сюди; бо народ, який біг до пустелі, повернувся на переслідувачів.

And Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambuscade had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city went up to heaven; and they turned and smote the men of Gai.	Ісус і весь Ізраїль, побачивши, що ті, які сиділи в засідці, взяли місто, і дим від міста піднявся [до неба], повернулися і стали уражати жителів Гая;

And these came forth out of the city to meet them; and they were in the midst of the army, some being on this side, and some on that; and they smote them until there was not left of them one who survived and escaped.	а ті з міста вийшли назустріч їм, так що вони знаходилися всередині між ізраїльтянами, з яких одні були з того боку, а інші з іншого; так уражали їх, що не залишили жодного з них, хто уцілів би або втік;

And they took the king of Gai alive, and brought him to Joshua.	а царя Гайського взяли живим і привели його до Ісуса.

And when the children of Israel had ceased slaying all that were in Gai, and in the fields, and in the mountain on the descent, from whence they pursued them even to the end, then Joshua returned to Gai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.	Коли ізраїльтяни перебили всіх жителів Гая на полі, у пустелі, де вони переслідували їх, і коли усі вони до останнього впали від вістря меча, тоді всі ізраїльтяни повернулися до Гая і вразили його вістрям меча.

And they that fell in that day, men and women, were twelve thousand: they slew all the inhabitants of Gai.	Полеглих у той день чоловіків і жінок, усіх жителів Гая, було дванадцять тисяч.

Beside the spoils that were in the city, all things which the children of Israel took as spoil for themselves according to the command of the Lord, as the Lord commanded Joshua.	тільки худобу і здобич міста цього [сини] Ізраїля розділили між собою, за словом Господа, як [Господь] сказав Ісусові.

And Joshua burnt the city with fire: he made it an uninhabited heap for ever, even to this day.	І спалив Ісус Гай і обвернув його на вічні руїни, на пустелю, до цього дня;

And he hanged the king of Gai on a gallows; and he remained on the tree till evening: and when the sun went down, Joshua gave charge, and they took down his body from the tree, and cast it into a pit, and they set over him a heap of stones until this day.	а царя Гайського повісив на дереві, [і був він на дереві] до вечора; після заходу ж сонця наказав Ісус, і зняли труп його з дерева, і кинули його біля воріт міських, і накидали над ним велику купу каміння, яка вціліла навіть до цього дня.
