Chapter 11	Глава 11

1	1
And Jephthae the Galaadite was a mighty man; and he was the son of a harlot, who bore Jephthae to Galaad.	Ієффай галаадитянин був людиною хороброю. Він був сином блудниці; від Галаада народився Ієффай.

And the wife of Galaad bore him sons; and the sons of his wife grew up, and they cast out Jephthae, and said to him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father, for thou art the son of a concubine.	І дружина Галаадова народила йому синів. Коли змужніли сини дружини, прогнали вони Ієффая, сказавши йому: ти не спадкоємець у домі батька нашого, тому що ти син іншої жінки.

And Jephthae fled from the face of his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and vain men gathered to Jephthae, and went out with him.	І втік Ієффай від братів своїх і жив у землі Тов; і зібралися до Ієффая бездільні люди і виходили з ним.

And it came to pass when the children of Ammon prepared to fight with Israel,	Через деякий час аммонитяни пішли війною на Ізраїля.

that the elders of Galaad went to fetch Jephthae from the land of Tob.	Під час війни аммонитян з ізраїльтянами прийшли старійшини галаадські взяти Ієффая із землі Тов

And they said to Jephthae, Come, and be our head, and we will fight with the sons of Ammon.	і сказали Ієффаю: прийди, будь у нас вождем, і ми будемо воювати з аммонитянами.

And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, Did ye not hate me, and cast me out of my father's house, and banish me from you? and wherefore are ye come to me now when ye want me?	Ієффай сказав старійшинам галаадським: чи не ви зненавиділи мене і вигнали з дому батька мого? навіщо ж прийшли до мене нині, коли ви в біді?

And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, Therefore have we now turned to thee, that thou shouldest go with us, and fight against the sons of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Galaad.	Старійшини галаадські сказали Ієффаю: для того ми тепер прийшли до тебе, щоб ти пішов з нами й воював з аммонитянами і був у нас начальником усіх жителів галаадських.

And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, If ye turn me back to fight with the children of Ammon, and the Lord should deliver them before me, then will I be your head.	І сказав Ієффай старійшинам галаадським: якщо ви повернете мене, щоб воювати з аммонитянами, і Господь віддасть їх мені, то чи залишуся я у вас начальником?

And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, The Lord be witness between us, if we shall not do according to thy word.	Старійшини галаадські сказали Ієффаю: Господь нехай буде свідком між нами, що ми зробимо за словом твоїм!

And Jephthae went with the elders of Galaad, and the people made him head and ruler over them: and Jephthae spoke all his words before the Lord in Massepha.	І пішов Ієффай зі старійшинами галаадськими, і народ поставив його над собою начальником і вождем, і Ієффай виголосив усі слова свої перед лицем Господа в Массифі.

And Jephthae sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou hast come against me to fight in my land?	І послав Ієффай послів до царя Аммонитського сказати: що тобі до мене, чому ти прийшов до мене воювати на землі моїй?

And the king of the children of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthae, Because Israel took my land when he went up out of Egypt, from Arnon to Jaboc, and to Jordan: now then return them peaceably and I will depart.	Цар Аммонитський сказав послам Ієффая: Ізраїль, коли йшов з Єгипту, взяв землю мою від Арнона до Іавока і Йордану; отже, поверни мені її з миром [і я відступлю].

And Jephthae again sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon,	[І повернулися посли до Ієффая.] Ієффай удруге послав послів до царя Аммонитського,

and said to him, Thus says Jephthae, Israel took not the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon;	сказати йому: так говорить Ієффай: Ізраїль не забирав землі Моавитської і землі Аммонитської;

for in their going up out of Egypt Israel went in the wilderness as far as the sea of Siph, and came to Cades.	бо коли йшли з Єгипту, Ізраїль пішов у пустелю до Червоного моря і прийшов у Кадес;

And Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, I will pass, if it please thee, by thy land: and the king of Edom complied not: and Israel also sent to the king of Moab, and he did not consent; and Israel sojourned in Cades.	звідти послав Ізраїль послів до царя Едомського сказати: «дозволь мені пройти землею твоєю»; але цар Едомський не послухав; і до царя Моавитського він посилав, але і той не погодився; тому Ізраїль залишався в Кадесі.

And they journeyed in the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab: and they came by the east of the land of Moab, and encamped in the country beyond Arnon, and came not within the borders of Moab, for Arnon is the border of Moab.	І пішов пустелею, й оминув землю Едомську і землю Моавитську, і, прийшовши до східної межі землі Моавитської, розташувався станом за Арноном; але не входив у межі Моавитські, тому що Арнон є межа Моава.

And Israel sent messengers to Seon king of the Amorite, king of Esebon, and Israel said to him, Let us pass, we pray thee, by thy land to our place.	І послав Ізраїль послів до Сигона, царя Аморрейського, царя Есевонського, і сказав йому Ізраїль: дозволь нам пройти землею твоєю в своє місце.

And Seon did not trust Israel to pass by his coast; and Seon gathered all his people, and they encamped at Jasa; and he set the battle in array against Israel.	Але Сигон не погодився пропустити Ізраїля через межі свої, і зібрав Сигон весь народ свій, і розташувався станом у Іааці, і воював з Ізраїлем.

And the Lord God of Israel delivered Seon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote him; and Israel inherited all the land of the Amorite who dwelt in that land,	І віддав Господь Бог Ізраїлів Сигона і весь народ його в руки Ізраїля, і він розбив їх; і одержав Ізраїль у спадщину всю землю Аморрея, що жив у землі тій;

from Arnon and to Jaboc, and from the wilderness to Jordan.	і одержали вони у спадщину всі землі Аморрея від Арнона до Іавока і від пустелі до Йордану.

And now the Lord God of Israel has removed the Amorite from before his people Israel, and shalt thou inherit his land?	Отже, Господь Бог Ізраїлів прогнав Аморрея від імені народу Свого Ізраїля, а ти хочеш узяти його спадщину?

Wilt thou not inherit those possessions which Chamos thy god shall cause thee to inherit; and shall not we inherit the land of all those whom the Lord our God has removed from before you?	Чи не володієш ти тим, що дав тобі Хамос, бог твій? І ми володіємо всім тим, що дав нам у спадщину Господь Бог наш.

And now art thou any better than Balac son of Sepphor, king of Moab? Did he indeed fight with Israel, or indeed make war with him,	Хіба ти кращий за Валака, сина Сепфорового, царя Моавитського? Чи сварився він з Ізраїлем, або воював з ними?

when Israel dwelt in Esebon and in its coasts, and in the land of Aroer and in its coasts, and in all the cities by Jordan, three hundred years? and wherefore didst thou not recover them in that time?	Ізраїль уже живе триста років у Есевоні й у залежних від нього містах, у Ароері і залежних від нього містах, і в усіх містах, що біля Арнона; чому ви в той час не віднімали [їх]?

And now I have not sinned against thee, but thou wrongest me in preparing war against me: may the Lord the Judge judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.	А я не винен перед тобою, і ти робиш мені зло, виступивши проти мене війною. Господь Суддя нехай буде нині суддею між синами Ізраїля і між аммонитянами!

But the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not to the words of Jephthae, which he sent to him.	Але цар Аммонитський не послухав слів Ієффая, з якими він посилав до нього.

And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthae, and he passed over Galaad, and Manasse, and passed by the watch-tower of Galaad to the other side of the children of Ammon.	І був на Ієффаєві Дух Господній, і пройшов він Галаад і Манассію, і пройшов Массифу галаадську, і з Массифи галаадської пішов до аммонитян.

And Jephthae vowed a vow to the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,	І дав Ієффай обітницю Господу і сказав: якщо Ти віддаси аммонитян у руки мої,

then it shall come to pass that whosoever shall first come out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, he shall be the Lord's: I will offer him up for a whole-burnt-offering.	то після повернення мого з миром від аммонитян, що вийде з воріт дому мого назустріч мені, буде Господу, і принесу це у всепалення.

And Jephthae advanced to meet the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hand.	І прийшов Ієффай до аммонитян — воювати з ними, і віддав їх Господь у руки його;

And he smote them from Aroer till one comes to Arnon, in number twenty cities, and as far as Ebelcharmim, with a very great destruction: and the children of Ammon were straitened before the children of Israel.	і вразив їх поразкою дуже великою, від Ароера до Минифа двадцять міст, і до Авель-Керамима, і підкорилися аммонитяни синам Ізраїлевим.

And Jephthae came to Massepha to his house; and behold, his daughter came forth to meet him with timbrels and dances; and she was his only child, he had not another son or daughter.	І прийшов Ієффай у Массифу в дім свій, і ось, дочка його виходить назустріч йому з тимпанами і бубнами: вона була в нього тільки одна, і не було в нього ще ні сина, ні дочки.

And it came to pass when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Ah, ah, my daughter, thou hast indeed troubled me, and thou wast the cause of my trouble; and I have opened my mouth against thee to the Lord, and I shall not be able to return from it.	Коли він побачив її, роздер одяг свій і сказав: ох, дочко моя! ти вбила мене; і ти серед порушників спокою мого! я відкрив [про тебе] вуста мої перед Господом і не можу відректися.

And she said to him, Father, hast thou opened thy mouth to the Lord? Do to me accordingly as the word went out of thy mouth, in that the Lord has wrought vengeance for thee on thine enemies of the children of Ammon.	Вона сказала йому: батьку мій! ти відкрив вуста твої перед Господом — і роби зі мною те, що вимовили вуста твої, коли Господь звершив через тебе помсту ворогам твоїм аммонитянам.

And she said to her father, Let my father now do this thing: let me alone for two months, and I will go up and down on the mountains, and I will bewail my virginity, I and my companions.	І сказала батькові своєму: зроби мені тільки ось що: відпусти мене на два місяці; я піду, зійду на гори й оплачу дівоцтво моє з подругами моїми.

And he said, Go: and he sent her away for two months; and she went, and her companions, and she bewailed her virginity on the mountains.	Він сказав: піди. І відпустив її на два місяці. Вона пішла з подругами своїми й оплакувала дівоцтво своє в горах.

And it came to pass at the end of the two months that she returned to her father; and he performed upon her his vow which he vowed; and she knew no man:	Коли минуло два місяці вона повернулася до батька свого, і він звершив над нею обітницю свою, яку дав, і вона не пізнала чоловіка. І ввійшло у звичай у Ізраїля,

and it was an ordinance in Israel, That the daughters of Israel went from year to year to bewail the daughter of Jephthae the Galaadite for four days in a year.	що щорічно дочки Ізраїлеві ходили оплакувати дочку Ієффая галаадянина, чотири дні на рік.
