Chapter 18	Глава 18

1	1
In those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of Dan sought for itself an inheritance to inhabit, because no inheritance had fallen to it until that day in the midst of the tribes of the children of Israel.	У ті дні не було царя в Ізраїля; і в ті дні коліно Данове шукало собі наділ, де б оселитися, тому що до того часу не випало йому повного наділу між колінами Ізраїлевими.

And the sons of Dan sent from their families five men of valour, from Saraa and from Esthaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, Go and search out the land. And they came as far as the mount of Ephraim to the house of Michaias and they lodged there,	І послали сини Дана від племені свого п’ять чоловік, мужів сильних, з Цори й Естаола, щоб оглянути землю й дізнатися про неї, і сказали їм: підіть, узнайте землю. Вони прийшли на гору Єфремову до дому Михи і ночували там.

in the house of Michaias, and they recognised the voice of the young man the Levite, and turned in thither; and said to him, Who brought thee in hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?	Перебуваючи біля дому Михи, впізнали вони голос молодого левита і зайшли туди і запитали його: хто тебе привів сюди? що ти тут робиш і навіщо ти тут?

And he said to them, Thus and thus did Michaias to me, and he hired me, and I became his priest.	Він сказав їм: те і те зробив для мене Миха, найняв мене, і я в нього священиком.

And they said to him, Enquire now of God, and we shall know whether our way will prosper, on which we are going.	Вони сказали йому: запитай Бога, щоб знати нам, чи успішною буде путь наша, в яку ми йдемо.

And the priest said to them, Go in peace; your way in which ye go, is before the Lord.	Священик сказав їм: ідіть з миром; перед Господом путь ваша, в яку ви йдете.

And the five men went on, and came to Laisa; and they saw the people in the midst of it dwelling securely, at ease as is the manner of the Sidonians, and there is no one perverting or shaming a matter in the land, no heir extorting treasures; and they are far from the Sidonians, and they have no intercourse with any one.	І пішли ті п’ять чоловіків, і прийшли в Лаїс, і побачили народ, який у ньому, що він живе спокійно, за звичаєм сидонян, тихий і безтурботний, і що не було в землі тій, щоб хто кривдив у чому або мав би владу: від сидонян вони жили далеко, і ні з ким не було у них ніякої справи.

And the five men came to their brethren to Saraa and Esthaol, and said to their brethren, Why sit ye here idle?	І повернулися [ті п’ять чоловік] до братів своїх у Цору й Естаол, і сказали їм брати їхні: з чим ви?

And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good, yet ye are still: delay not to go, and to enter in to possess the land.	Вони сказали: встанемо і підемо на них; ми бачили землю, вона дуже добра; а ви задумалися: не баріться йти і взяти в спадщину ту землю;

And whensoever ye shall go, ye shall come in upon a people secure, and the land is extensive, for God has given it into your hand; a place where there is no want of anything that the earth affords.	коли підете ви, прийдете до народу безтурботного, і земля та велика; Бог віддає її в руки ваші; це таке місце, де немає ні в чому нестатку, що виникає від землі.

And there departed thence of the families of Dan, from Saraa and from Esthaol, six hundred men, girded with weapons of war.	І вирушили звідти з коліна Данового, з Цори й Естаола, шістсот чоловіків, оперезавшись військовою зброєю.

And they went up, and encamped in Cariathiarim in Juda; therefore it was called in that place the camp of Dan, until this day: behold, it is behind Cariathiarim.	Вони пішли і стали станом у Кириаф-Іаримі, в Юдеї. Тому і називають те місце станом Дановим до цього дня. Він позаду Кириаф-Іарима.

And they went on thence to the mount of Ephraim, and came to the house of Michaias.	Звідти вирушили вони на гору Єфремову і прийшли до дому Михи.

And the five men who went to spy out the land of Laisa answered, and said to their brethren, Ye know that there is in this place an ephod, and theraphin, and a graven and a molten image; and now consider what ye shall do.	І сказали ті п’ять чоловіків, що ходили оглядати землю Лаїс, братам своїм: чи знаєте, що в одному з домів цих є ефод, терафим, ідол і відлитий кумир? отже, подумайте, що зробити.

And they turned aside there, and went into the house of the young man, the Levite, even into the house of Michaias, and asked him how he was.	І зайшли туди, і ввійшли в дім молодого левита, у дім Михи, і вітали його.

And the six hundred men of the sons of Dan who were girded with their weapons of war stood by the door of the gate.	А шістсот чоловік із синів Данових, оперезані військовою зброєю, стояли біля воріт.

And the five men who went to spy out the land went up, and entered into the house of Michaias, and the priest stood.	П’ять же чоловік, які ходили оглядати землю, пішли, увійшли туди, взяли ідола й ефод і терафим і відлитого кумира. Священик стояв біля воріт з тими шістьмастами людьми, оперезаними військовою зброєю.

And they took the graven image, and the ephod, and the theraphin, and the molten image; and the priest said to them, What are ye doing?	Коли вони ввійшли в дім Михи і взяли ідола, ефод, терафим і відлитого кумира, священик сказав їм: що ви робите?
19	19
And they said to him, Be silent, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be the priest of the house of one man, or to be the priest of a tribe and house for a family of Israel?	Вони сказали йому: мовчи, поклади руку твою на вуста твої й іди з нами і будь у нас отцем і священиком; чи краще тобі бути священиком у домі однієї людини, ніж бути священиком у коліні або в племені Ізраїлевому?

And the heart of the priest was glad, and he took the ephod, and the theraphin, and the graven image, and the molten image, and went in the midst of the people.	Священик зрадів, взяв ефод, терафим і ідола [і відлитого кумира], і пішов з народом.
21	21
So they turned and departed, and put their children and their property and their baggage before them.	Вони обернулися і пішли, і відпустили дітей, худобу і майно вперед.

They went some distance from the house of Michaias, and, behold, Michaias and the men in the houses near Michaias' house, cried out, and overtook the children of Dan.	Коли вони віддалилися від дому Михи, [Миха і] мешканці домів, сусідніх з домом Михи, зібралися і погналися за синами Дана,

And the children of Dan turned their face, and said to Michaias, What is the matter with thee that thou hast cried out?	і кричали синам Дана. [Сини Данові] обернулися і сказали Миху: чого тобі, що ти так кричиш?

And Michaias said, Because ye have taken my graven image which I made, and my priest, and are gone; and what have I remaining? and what is this that ye say to me, Why criest thou?	[Миха] сказав: ви взяли богів моїх, яких я зробив, і священика, і пішли; чого ще більше? як же ви говорите: чого тобі?

And the children of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest angry men run upon thee, and take away thy life, and the lives of thy house.	Сини Данові сказали йому: мовчи, щоб ми не чули голосу твого; інакше деякі з нас, розгнівавшись, нападуть на вас, і ти погубиш себе і родину твою.

And the children of Dan went their way; and Michaias saw that they were stronger than himself, and he returned to his house.	І пішли сини Данові шляхом своїм; Миха ж, бачачи, що вони сильніші за нього, пішов назад і повернувся в дім свій.

And the children of Dan took what Michaias had made, and the priest that he had, and they came to Laisa, to a people quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.	А [сини Данові] узяли те, що зробив Миха, і священика, який був у нього, і пішли в Лаїс, проти народу спокійного і безтурботного, і знищили його мечем, а місто спалили вогнем.

And there was no deliverer, because the city is far from the Sidonians, and they have no intercourse with men, and it is in the valley of the house of Raab; and they built the city, and dwelt in it.	Нікому було допомогти, тому що він був віддалений від Сидона і ні з ким не мав справи. [Місто це] знаходилося в долині, що поблизу Беф-Рехова. І побудували знову місто й оселилися в ньому,

And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and the name of the city was Ulamais before.	і нарекли ім’я місту: Дан, за ім’ям батька свого Дана, сина Ізраїлевого; а раніше ім’я місту тому було: Лаїс.

And the children of Dan set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan son of Gerson son of Manasse, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan till the time of the carrying away of the nation.	І поставили в себе сини Данові ідола; Іонафан же, син Гирсона, сина Манассії, сам і сини його були священиками в коліні Дановім до дня переселення жителів тієї землі;

And they set up for themselves the graven image which Michaias made, all the days that the house of God was in Selom; and it was so in those days that there was no king in Israel.	і мали у себе ідола, зробленого Михою, весь той час, коли дім Божий знаходився в Силомі.
