Chapter 14	Глава 14

And Sampson went down to Thamnatha, and saw a woman in Thamnatha of the daughters of the Philistines.	І пішов Самсон у Фимнафу і побачив у Фимнафі жінку з дочок филистимських [і вона сподобалася йому].

And he went up and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Thamnatha of the daughters of the Phylistines; and now take her to me for a wife.	Він пішов і оголосив батькові своєму і матері своїй і сказав: я бачив у Фимнафі жінку з дочок филистимських; візьміть її мені за дружину.

And his father and his mother said to him, Are there no daughters of thy brethren, and is there not a woman of all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Sampson said to his father, Take her for me, for she is right in my eyes.	Батько і мати його сказали йому: хіба немає жінок між дочками братів твоїх і в усьому народі моєму, що ти йдеш узяти дружину у филистимлян необрізаних? І сказав Самсон батькові своєму: її візьми мені, тому що вона мені сподобалася.

And his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that he sought to be revenged on the Philistines: and at that time the Philistines lorded it over Israel.	Батько його і мати його не знали, що це від Господа, і що він шукає випадку помститися филистимлянам. А в той час филистимляни панували над Ізраїлем.

And Sampson and his father and his mother went down to Thamnatha, and he came to the vineyard of Thamnatha; and behold, a young lion roared in meeting him.	І пішов Самсон з батьком своїм і з матір’ю своєю у Фимнафу, і коли підходили до виноградників фимнафських, ось, молодий лев, рикаючи, йде назустріч йому.

And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he crushed him as he would have crushed a kid of the goats, and there was nothing in his hands: and he told not his father and his mother what he had done.	І зійшов на нього Дух Господній, і він роздер лева, як козеня; а в руці в нього нічого не було. І не сказав батькові своєму і матері своїй, що він зробив.

And they went down and spoke to the woman, and she was pleasing in the eyes of Sampson.	І прийшов і поговорив з жінкою, і вона сподобалася Самсону.

And after some time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion; and behold, a swarm of bees, and honey were in the mouth of the lion.	Через кілька днів знову пішов він, щоб узяти її, і зайшов подивитися на труп лева, і ось, рій бджіл у трупі лев’ячому і мед.

And he took it into his hands, and went on eating, and he went to his father and his mother, and gave to them, and they did eat; but he told them not that he took the honey out of the mouth of the lion.	Він узяв його в руки свої і пішов, і їв дорогою; і коли прийшов до батька свого і матері своєї, дав і їм, і вони їли; але не сказав їм, що з лев’ячого трупа взяв мед цей.

And his father went down to the woman, and Sampson made there a banquet for seven days, for so the young men are used to do.	І прийшов батько його до жінки, і зробив там Самсон [семиденний] бенкет, як зазвичай роблять наречені.

And it came to pass when they saw him, that they took thirty guests, and they were with him.	І коли побачили його там, вибрали тридцять шлюбних друзів, які були б при ньому.

And Sampson said to them, I propound you a riddle: if ye will indeed tell it me, and discover it within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty sheets and thirty changes of raiment.	І сказав їм Самсон: загадаю я вам загадку; якщо ви відгадаєте мені її за сім днів бенкету і відгадаєте правильно, то я дам вам тридцять синдонів^* і тридцять змін одягу;

And if ye cannot tell it me, ye shall give me thirty napkins and thirty changes of apparel: and they said to him, Propound thy riddle, and we will hear it.	якщо ж не зможете відгадати мені, то ви дайте мені тридцять синдонів і тридцять змін одягу. Вони сказали йому: загадай загадку твою, послухаємо.

And he said to them, Meat came forth of the eater, and sweetness out of the strong: and they could not tell the riddle for three days.	І сказав їм: з того, що поїдає, вийшло те, що їдять, і з сильного вийшло солодке. І не могли відгадати загадки за три дні.

And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they said to the wife of Sampson, Deceive now thy husband, and let him tell thee the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: did ye invite us to do us violence?	В сьомий день сказали вони дружині Самсоновій: умов чоловіка твого, щоб він розгадав нам загадку; інакше спалимо вогнем тебе і дім батька твого; хіба ви покликали нас, щоб обібрати нас?

And Sampson's wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not; for the riddle which thou hast propounded to the children of my people, thou hast not told me: and Sampson said to her, If I have not told it to my father and my mother, shall I tell it to thee?	І плакала дружина Самсонова перед ним і говорила: ти ненавидиш мене і не любиш; ти загадав загадку синам народу мого, а мені не розгадаєш її. Він сказав їй: батькові моєму і матері моїй не розгадав її; і чи тобі розгадаю?

And she wept before him the seven days, during which their banquet lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she troubled him; and she told it to the children of her people.	І плакала вона перед ним сім днів, у які продовжувався в них бенкет. Нарешті в сьомий день розгадав їй, бо вона наполегливо просила його. А вона розгадала загадку синам народу свого.

And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day, before sunrise, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? and Sampson said to them, If ye had not ploughed with my heifer, ye would not have known my riddle.	І в сьомий день до заходу сонця сказали йому громадяни: що солодше за мед, і що сильніше за лева! Він сказав їм: якби ви не орали на моїй телиці, то не відгадали б моєї загадки.

And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him powerfully, and he went down to Ascalon, and destroyed of the inhabitants thirty men, and took their garments, and gave the changes of raiment to them that told the riddle; and Sampson was very angry, and went up to the house of his father.	І зійшов на нього Дух Господній, і пішов він в Аскалон, і, убивши там тридцять чоловік, зняв з них одяг, і віддав зміну одягу їхнього тим, що розгадали загадку. І запалав гнів його, і пішов він у дім батька свого.

And the wife of Sampson was given to one of his friends, with whom he was on terms of friendship.	А дружина Самсонова вийшла за шлюбного друга його, який був при ньому другом.
