Chapter 13	Глава 13

Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it,	Почув Симон, що Трифон зібрав велике військо, щоб іти у землю Юдейську і розорити її.

and saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together,	І бачачи, що народ у страху і тремтінні, зійшов у Єрусалим і зібрав народ.

and gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen,	І, підбадьорюючи їх, говорив їм: самі ви знаєте, скільки я і брати мої і дім батька мого зробили заради цих законів і святині, знаєте війни і гноблення, які ми витерпіли.

by reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone.	Тому і загинули всі брати мої за Ізраїля, і залишився я один.

Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren.	І нині нехай не буде того, щоб я став щадити життя моє в усі часи гноблення, бо я не кращий за братів моїх.

Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice.	Але буду мститися за народ мій і за святилище, і за дружин і за дітей наших, бо об’єдналися всі народи, щоб знищити нас через неприязнь.

Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived.	І запалився дух народу, як тільки почув він такі слова;

And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother.	і відповіли гучним голосом, і сказали: ти — наш вождь замість Іуди та Іонафана, брата твого.

Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever thou commandest us, that will we do.	Веди нашу війну, і що ти скажеш нам, ми все зробимо.
10	10
So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about.	Тоді зібрав він усіх мужів ратних, і поспішив закінчити стіни Єрусалима, і з усіх боків зміцнив його.

Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a great power, to Joppe: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it.	Потім послав Іонафана, сина Авессаломового, і з ним достатню кількість війська в Іоппію, і він вигнав тих, що були у ній, і залишився там.

So Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward.	Тим часом Трифон піднявся з Птолемаїди з численним військом, щоб увійти у землю Юдейську; з ним був й Іонафан під вартою.

But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain.	Симон же розташував стан при Адиді навпроти рівнини.

Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying,	Коли Трифон довідався, що Симон заступив місце Іонафана, брата свого, і має намір вступити у битву з ним, то послав до нього послів сказати:

Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him.	за срібло, яке брат твій Іонафан заборгував царській скарбниці за потребами, які він мав, ми затримали його.
16	16
Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go.	Отже, надішли тепер сто талантів срібла і у заручники двох синів його, щоб він, бувши відпущеним, не відійшов від нас, — і ми відпустимо його.

Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him, yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people:	Симон розумів, що вони говорять з ним підступно, але послав срібло і дітей, щоб не викликати великої ненависти народу,

who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead.	який сказав би: через те, що я не послав йому срібла і дітей, Іонафан загинув.

So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled, neither would he let Jonathan go.	Отже, послав дітей і сто талантів; але Трифон обманув і не відпустив Іонафана.

And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went.	Після цього Трифон пішов, щоб увійти в країну і розорити її, і пішов манівцем на Адару. Але Симон і військо його йшли слідом за ним усюди, куди він йшов.

Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals.	Ті ж, що були у фортеці, послали до Трифона послів, щоб спонукати його прийти до них через пустелю і надіслати їм продовольчі припаси.

Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad.	І приготував Трифон усю свою кінноту, щоб іти у ту ж ніч, але був дуже великий сніг, і він не пішов через сніг, а, піднявшись, вирушив у Галаад.

And when he came near to Bascama, he slew Jonathan, who was buried there.	Коли ж наблизився до Васками, умертвив Іонафана, і він похований там.

Afterward Tryphon returned and went into his own land.	І повернувся Трифон і пішов у землю свою.

Then sent Simon, and took the bones of Jonathan his brother, and buried them in Modin, the city of his fathers.	Тоді Симон послав і взяв кістки Іонафана, брата свого, і поховав їх у Модині, місті батьків своїх.

And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days.	І оплакував його весь Ізраїль гірким плачем, і сумували за ним багато днів.

Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before.	І спорудив Симон будівлю над гробом батька свого і братів своїх і звів її високою, для благовидости, з тесаного каменю з передньої і задньої сторони,

Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren.	і поставив на ній сім пірамід, одну навпроти іншої, батькові і матері і чотирьом братам;

And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea.	зробив на них майстерні прикраси, поставивши навколо високі стовпи, а на стовпах повне озброєння — на вічну пам’ять, і поряд зі зброєю — вирізьблені кораблі, так що вони видимі були всім, хто плаває по морю.

This is the sepulchre which he made at Modin, and it standeth yet unto this day.	Цей надгробний пам’ятник, який зробив він у Модині, стоїть до цього дня.

Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him.	Трифон же з підступництвом вирушив у путь з юним царем Антиохом і убив його,

And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land.	і став царем замість нього, і поклав на себе вінець Азії, і зробив велике ураження на землі.

Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein.	А Симон будував фортеці в Юдеї, зміцнюючи їх високими вежами і великими стінами, воротами і запорами, і складав у фортецях продовольчі запаси.

Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil.	Потім обрав Симон мужів і послав до царя Димитрія просити, щоб він зробив полегшення країні, бо всі діяння Трифона були грабіжницькі.

Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner:	І послав йому цар Димитрій відповідь на ці слова і написав такий лист:

King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting:	«Цар Димитрій Симону, первосвященикові і другові царів, і старійшинам і народу юдейському — радуватися.

The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted.	Золотий вінець і пальмову гілку, послану вами, ми одержали і готові укласти з вами повний мир і написати тим, що завідують зборами, щоб відпустити вам данину.

And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own.	І все, що ми ухвалили про вас, нехай буде незмінно, і фортеці, які ви побудували, нехай належать вам.
39	39
As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid.	Прощаємо вам також ненавмисні провини ваші до цього дня і вінцевий збір, який платити ви зобов’язані, і якщо інше щось стягувалося у Єрусалимі, більш не буде стягуватися.

And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us.	І якщо знайдуться з вас здатні бути вписаними у число тих, що знаходяться при нас, нехай записуються, і нехай буде між нами мир».

Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year.	У сто сімдесятому році знято ярмо язичників з Ізраїля;

Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews.	і народ Ізраїльський у листуванні й договорах почав писати: «першого року при Симоні, великому первосвященику, вожді і правителеві юдеїв».

In those days Simon camped against Gaza, and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it.	У цей час Симон зробив напад на Газу, оточив її військом, збудував облогові машини і присунув їх до міста, розбив одну вежу й оволодів нею.

And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city:	А ті, що були на машині, вскочили у місто, і сталося в місті велике сум’яття.

insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace.	І зійшли громадяни з дружинами і дітьми на стіну, роздерши одяг свій, і голосно волали, благаючи Симона дати їм помилування,
46	46
And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy.	і говорили: вчини з нами не за злими справами нашими, але з милости твоєї.

So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving.	І змилосердився над ними Симон, і не воював з ними, а тільки вигнав їх з міста, й очистив доми, в яких знаходилися ідоли, і так увійшов у місто зі славослів’ями і благословеннями.

Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwelling place for himself.	І викинув з нього все нечисте, й оселив там мужів, які дотримуються закону, й укріпив його, і влаштував у ньому для себе житло.

They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine.	Тим же, що були у Єрусалимській фортеці, не дозволяли ні виходити, ні вступати у країну, ні купувати, ні продавати, і вони терпіли сильний голод, і багато хто з них загинув від голоду.

Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions;	Тоді воззвали вони до Симона про мир, і він дав їм його, але вигнав їх звідти й очистив фортецю від оскверніння,

and entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel.	і ввійшов у неї у двадцять третій день другого місяця сто сімдесят першого року зі славослів’ями, пальмовим віттям, з гуслями, кимвалами і цитрами, із псалмами і піснями, бо знищено великого ворога Ізраїля.

He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company.	І встановив кожного року проводити цей день з веселощами, й укріпив гору храму, яка знаходиться поблизу фортеці, й оселився там сам і ті, що були з ним.

And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazara.	І побачив Симон, що син його Іоан змужнів, і поставив його начальником над усіма військами, й оселився у Газарі.
