| Now when Jonathan saw that the time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them. | Іонафан, бачачи, що час сприятливий для нього, обрав мужів і послав у Рим встановити і відновити дружбу з римлянами, |

|
| He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose. | і до спартанців і в інші місця послав листи про те саме. |

|
| So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time. | І прийшли вони у Рим, і ввійшли у раду, і сказали: «Іонафан первосвященик і народ юдейський послали нас, щоб відновити дружбу з вами і союз, як і раніше». |

| Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place, that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably. | І там дали їм листи до місцевих начальників, щоб провели їх у землю Юдейську з миром. |
|

| And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians: | Ось список листа, який писав Іонафан спартанцям: |

| Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other people of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting: | «первосвященик Іонафан і народні старійшини і священики й інший народ юдейський братам спартанцям — радуватися. |

|
| There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify. | Ще раніше від Дарія [Арея], який царював у вас, прислані були до первосвященика Онії листи, що ви — брати наші, як свідчить список. |

| At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship. | І прийняв Онія посланого мужа з честю, і одержав листи, в яких ясно говорилося про союз і дружбу. |

| Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, for that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us, | Ми ж, хоч і не маємо потреби у них, маючи втіхою священні книги, які у руках наших, |

|
| have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us. | але вирішили послати до вас для відновлення братерства і дружби, щоб не відчужуватися від вас, тому що багато минуло часу після того, як ви посилали до нас. |

| We therefore at all times without ceasing, both in our feasts, and other convenient days, do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer, and in our prayers, as reason is, and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren: | Ми постійно повсякчас, як у свята, так і в інші встановлені дні, згадуємо про вас при жертвоприношеннях наших і молитвах, як слід і пристойно згадувати братів. |

| and we are right glad of your honour. | Ми радіємо за вашу славу; |

| As for ourselves, we have had great troubles and wars on every side, forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have fought against us. | нас же оточують багато бід і часті війни, бо воювали проти нас навколишні царі. |
|

|
| Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars: | Але ми не хотіли турбувати вас та інших союзників і друзів наших у цих війнах, |
|

|
| for we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot. | бо ми маємо допомогу небесну, яка допомагає нам; ми позбулися ворогів наших, і вороги наші втихомирені. |
|

|
| For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league. | Тепер ми обрали Нумінія, сина Антиохового, й Антипатра, сина Іасонового, і послали їх до римлян відновити дружбу з ними і колишній союз. |

| We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood. | Доручили їм іти і до вас, вітати вас і вручити вам листи від нас про поновлення і з вами нашого братерства. |
|

| Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto. | І ви добре зробите, відповівши нам на них». |
|

| And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent. | Ось і список листів, які надіслав Дарій [Арей]: |

| Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting: | «Цар Спартанський Онії первосвященикові — радуватися. |
|

|
| It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham: | Знайдено у писанні про спартанців і юдеїв, що вони — брати і від роду Авраамового. |

| now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity. | Тепер, коли ми довідалися про це, ви добре зробите, написавши нам про добробут ваш. |

| We do write back again to you, that your cattle and goods are our's, and our's are your's. We do command therefore our ambassadors to make report unto you on this wise. | Ми ж повідомляємо вам: худоба ваша і майно ваше — наші, а що у нас є, те ваше. І ми повеліли оголосити вам про те». |

| Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore, | І почув Іонафан, що повернулися воєначальники Димитрія з більшим військом, ніж колись, щоб воювати проти нього, |

|
| he removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country. | і вийшов з Єрусалима, і зустрів їх у країні Амафитській, і не дав їм часу ввійти у країну його. |
|

|
| He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season. | І послав у стан їхній спостерігачів, які, повернувшись, оголосили йому, що вони готуються напасти на них у цю ніч. |
|

|
| Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host. | Тому, коли зайшло сонце, Іонафан наказав своїм пильнувати, бути в озброєнні і готуватися до битви всю ніч, і поставив навколо стану передових сторожів. |

| But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp. | І почули вороги, що Іонафан зі своїми приготувався до битви, і злякалися, і затремтіли серцем своїм, і, запаливши вогні у стані своєму, пішли. |

| Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning. | Іонафан же і ті, що були з ним, не знали про те до ранку, бо бачили розпалені вогні. |
|

|
| Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus. | І погнався Іонафан за ними, але не наздогнав їх, тому що вони перейшли ріку Елевферу. |
|

|
| Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils. | Тоді Іонафан обернувся на арабів, називаних заведеями, уразив їх і взяв здобич їхню. |

| And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country. | Потім, повернувши, прийшов у Дамаск і пройшов по всій тій країні. |

| Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppe, and won it. | І Симон вийшов, і пройшов до Аскалона і найближчих фортець, і повернувся в Іоппію, й оволодів нею, |

| For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius' part: wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it. | бо він почув, що [іоппіяни] хочуть здати фортецю військам Димитрія, — і поставив там сторо́жу, щоб охороняти її. |

|
| After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea, | І повернувся Іонафан, і скликав старійшин народу, і радився з ними, щоб побудувати фортеці в Юдеї, |

|
| and making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it. | підвищити стіни Єрусалима і спорудити високу стіну між фортецею і містом, щоб відокремити її від міста, так щоб вона була окремо, і не було б у ній ні купівлі, ні продажу. |

| Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha. | Коли зібралися облаштувати місто і дійшли до стіни біля потоку зі східного боку, то побудували так звану Хафенафу. |

|
| Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars. | А Симон побудував Адиду в Сефилі, і зміцнив ворота і запори. |

|
| Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head. | Тим часом Трифон домагався стати царем Азії і покласти на себе вінець і підняти руку на царя Антиоха, |

|
| Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan. | але побоювався, як би не перешкодив йому Іонафан і не почав проти нього війну; тому шукав випадку, щоб узяти Іонафана й убити, і, піднявшись, пішов у Вефсан. |

| Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan. | І вийшов Іонафан назустріч йому з сорока тисячами обраних мужів, готових до битви, і прийшов у Вефсан. |

| Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him; | Коли Трифон побачив, що Іонафан іде з численним військом, то побоявся підняти на нього руки. |
|

|
| but received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself. | І прийняв його з честю, і представив його всім друзям своїм, дав йому подарунки, наказав військам своїм коритися йому, як собі самому. |
|

|
| Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou put all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us? | Потім сказав Іонафану: для чого ти утруднюєш весь цей народ, коли не чекає на нас війна? |
|

|
| Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming. | Отже, відпусти їх тепер у доми їхні, а для себе обери небагатьох мужів, які були б з тобою, і підемо зі мною у Птолемаїду, і я передам її тобі й інші фортеці й решту військ і всіх, що завідують зборами, і потім повернуся; бо для цього я і перебуваю тут. |

| So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea. | І повірив йому Іонафан, і зробив так, як він сказав, і відпустив війська, і вони вирушили у землю Юдейську; |
|

|
| And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him. | із собою ж залишив три тисячі мужів, з яких дві тисячі залишив у Галилеї, тисяча ж вирушила з ним. |
|

|
| Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates, and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword. | Але як тільки увійшов Іонафан у Птолемаїду, птолемаїдяни замкнули ворота, і схопили його, і всіх, хто увійшов з ним, убили мечем. |

| Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan's company. | Тоді Трифон послав військо і кінноту в Галилею і на велику рівнину, щоб знищити всіх, що були з Іонафаном. |
|

|
| But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another, and went close together, prepared to fight. | Але вони, почувши, що Іонафан схоплений і загинув, і ті, що були з ним, підбадьорили один одного, і вийшли густим строєм, готові битися. |

| They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again. | І побачили ті, що переслідували, що йдеться про життя, і повернулися назад. |
|

| Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation. | А вони всі благополучно прийшли у землю Юдейську й оплакували Іонафана і тих, що були з ним, і були у великому страху, і весь Ізраїль плакав гірким плачем. |

| Then all the heathen that were round about them sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men. | Тоді всі навколишні народи шукали, як знищити їх, бо говорили: тепер немає у них начальника і поборника; отже, будемо тепер воювати проти них і знищимо із середовища людей пам’ять їх. |
