I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit,	Істину кажу у Христі, не обманюю, совість моя свідчить мені Духом Святим,

that I have great sorrow and unceasing pain in my heart.	що велика мені печаль і безупинний біль серцю моєму:

For I could wish that I myself were anathema from Christ for my brethren’s sake, my kinsmen according to the flesh:	я жадав би сам бути відлученим від Христа за братів моїх, рідних мені по плоті,

who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises;	тобто ізраїльтян, яким належить усиновлення, і слава, і заповіти, і законоположення, і богослужіння, і обітницi;

whose are the fathers, and of whom is Christ as concerning the flesh, who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.	їхні й отці, і від них Христос по плоті, Сущий над усіма Бог, благословенний повік, амінь.

But it is not as though the word of God hath come to nought. For they are not all Israel, that are of Israel:	Та не так, щоб слово Боже не збулось: бо не всі ті ізраїльтяни, які від Ізраїля;

neither, because they are Abraham’s seed, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.	і не всі діти Авраама, які від плоті його, але сказано: «В Ісаакові наречеться тобі потомство».

That is, it is not the children of the flesh that are children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for a seed.	Тобто не діти тілесні є діти Божi; а діти обітниці визнаються за потомство.

For this is a word of promise, According to this season will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.	Слово ж обітниці таке: «У цей час прийду, і буде у Сари син».

And not only so; but Rebecca also having conceived by one, even by our father Isaac—	І не тільки це; але так було з Ревеккою, коли вона зачала в той самий час двох синів від Ісаака, отця нашого.

for the children being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth,	Бо, коли вони ще не народилися і не зробили нічого доброго чи злого, щоб воля Божа здійснилася в обранні

it was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.	не від діл, а від Того, Хто кличе, сказано було їй: «Більший служитиме меншому»‚

Even as it is written, Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.	як і написано: «Якова Я полюбив, а Ісава зненавидів».

What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.	Що ж скажемо? Hевже неправда у Бога? Зовсім ні.

For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.	Бо Він говорить Мойсеєві: «Кого милувати, помилую; кого жаліти, пожалію».
16	16
So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that hath mercy.	Отже, помилування залежить не від того, хто бажає, і не від того, хто біжить, а від Бога, Який милує.

For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, For this very purpose did I raise thee up, that I might show in thee my power, and that my name might be published abroad in all the earth.	Бо Писання говорить фараонові: «Hа те саме Я й настановив тебе, щоб показати над тобою силу Мою і щоб проповідане було ім’я Моє по всій землi».

So then he hath mercy on whom he will, and whom he will he hardeneth.	Отже, кого хоче, милує; а кого хоче, озлобляє.

Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he still find fault? For who withstandeth his will?	Ти скажеш мені: «За що ще звинувачує? Бо хто може противитися волі Його?»

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus?	А ти хто, чоловіче, що сперечаєшся з Богом? Чи скаже творіння своєму творцеві: «Hавіщо ти мене так зробив?»
21	21
Or hath not the potter a right over the clay, from the same lump to make one part a vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?	Хіба не має влади гончар над глиною, щоб із тієї самої суміші зробити один сосуд для почесного, а другий для непочесного вжитку?

What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much long-suffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction:	Що ж, якщо Бог, бажаючи показати гнів і явити могутність Свою, з великим довготерпінням щадив сосуди гніву, готові до погибелі,

and that he might make known the riches of his glory upon vessels of mercy, which he afore prepared unto glory,	щоб разом явити багатство слави Своєї над сосудами милосердя, які Він приготував для слави,

even us, whom he also called, not from the Jews only, but also from the Gentiles?	над нами, яких Він покликав не тільки з юдеїв, але і з язичників?

As he saith also in Hosea, I will call that my people, which was not my people; And her beloved, that was not beloved.	Як і в Осії Він говорить: «Hе Мій народ назву Моїм народом, і не улюблену — улюбленою».

And it shall be, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, There shall they be called sons of the living God.	І на тому місці, де сказано їм: «Ви — не Мій народ», там вони названі будуть синами Бога Живого.

And Isaiah crieth concerning Israel, If the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, it is the remnant that shall be saved:	Ісая ж провіщає про Ізраїль: «Хоча б синів Ізраїлевих було числом як піску морського, тільки останок спасеться;

for he is finishing the matter and cutting it short in righteousness; because the Lord will make it a matter cut short upon the earth.	бо діло завершує і скоро вирішить по правді, діло вирішальне вчинить Господь на землi».

And, as Isaiah hath said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, We had become as Sodom, and had been made like unto Gomorrah.	І, як провістив Ісая: «Коли б Господь Саваоф не залишив нам потомства, то ми стали б як Содом і були б подібні до Гоморри».

What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who followed not after righteousness, attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith:	Що ж скажемо? Язичники, які не шукали праведности, одержали праведність, праведність від віри.

but Israel, following after a law of righteousness, did not arrive at a law of righteousness.	А Ізраїль, який шукав закону праведности, закону праведности не досягнув.

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by works of the law. For they stumbled at the stone of stumbling;	Чому? Тому що шукали не у вірі, а в ділах закону, бо спіткнулися об камінь спотикання,

even as it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense: And whosoever believeth on him shall not be put to shame.	як написано: «Ось кладу в Сионі камінь спотикання і камінь спокуси; але кожний, хто вірує в Hього, не осоромиться».
