Many have sinned for a small matter; and he that seeketh for abundance will turn his eyes away.

ΓΥΝΑΙΚΟΣ ἀγαθῆς μακάριος ὁ ἀνήρ, καὶ ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἡμερῶν αὐτοῦ διπλάσιος.

|
As a nail sticketh fast between the joinings of the stones; so doth sin stick close between buying and selling.
|
γυνὴ ἀνδρεία εὐφραίνει τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς, καὶ τὰ ἔτη αὐτοῦ πληρώσει ἐν εἰρήνῃ.

|
Unless a man hold himself diligently in the fear of the Lord, his house shall soon be overthrown.
|
γυνὴ ἀγαθὴ μερὶς ἀγαθή, ἐν μερίδι φοβουμένων Κύριον δοθήσεται.

|
As when one sifteth with a sieve, the refuse remaineth; so the filth of man in his talk.
|
πλουσίου δὲ καὶ πτωχοῦ καρδία ἀγαθή, ἐν παντὶ καιρῷ πρόσωπον ἱλαρόν.

|
|
The furnace proveth the potter's vessels; so the trial of man is in his reasoning.
|
ἀπὸ τριῶν εὐλαβήθη ἡ καρδία μου, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ τετάρτῳ προσώπῳ ἐδεήθην· διαβολὴν πόλεως, καὶ ἐκκλησίαν ὄχλου, καὶ καταψευσμόν, ὑπὲρ θάνατον πάντα μοχθηρά.

|
The fruit declareth if the tree have been dressed; so is the utterance of a conceit in the heart of man.
|
ἄλγος καρδίας καὶ πένθος γυνὴ ἀντίζηλος ἐπὶ γυναικὶ καὶ μάστιξ γλώσσης πᾶσιν ἐπικοινωνοῦσα.

|
Praise no man before thou hearest him speak; for this is the trial of men.
|
βοοζύγιον σαλευόμενον γυνὴ πονηρά, ὁ κρατῶν αὐτῆς ὡς ὁ δρασσόμενος σκορπίου.

|
If thou followest righteousness, thou shalt obtain her, and put her on, as a glorious long robe.
|
ὀργὴ μεγάλη γυνὴ μέθυσος καὶ ἀσχημοσύνην αὐτῆς οὐ συγκαλύψει.

|
The birds will resort unto their like; so will truth return unto them that practise in her.
|
πορνεία γυναικὸς ἐν μετεωρισμοῖς ὀφθαλμῶν καὶ ἐν τοῖς βλεφάροις αὐτῆς γνωσθήσεται.

|
|
As the lion lieth in wait for the prey; so sin for them that work iniquity.
|
ἐπὶ θυγατρὶ ἀδιατρέπτῳ στερέωσον φυλακήν, ἵνα μὴ εὑροῦσα ἄνεσιν ἑαυτῇ χρήσηται.

|
The discourse of a godly man is always with wisdom; but a fool changeth as the moon.
|
ὀπίσω ἀναιδοῦς ὀφθαλμοῦ φύλαξαι, καὶ μὴ θαυμάσῃς ἐὰν εἰς σὲ πλημμελήσῃ·

|
If thou be among the indiscreet, observe the time; but be continually among men of understanding.
|
ὡς διψῶν ὁδοιπόρος τὸ στόμα ἀνοίξει, καὶ ἀπὸ παντὸς ὕδατος τοῦ σύνεγγυς πίεται, κατέναντι παντὸς πασσάλου καθήσεται καὶ ἔναντι βέλους ἀνοίξει φαρέτραν.

|
The discourse of fools is irksome, and their sport is the wantonness of sin.
|
χάρις γυναικὸς τέρψει τὸν ἄνδρα αὐτῆς, καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ αὐτοῦ πιανεῖ ἡ ἐπιστήμη αὐτῆς.

|
The talk of him that sweareth much maketh the hair stand upright; and their brawls make one stop his ears.
|
δόσις Κυρίου γυνὴ σιγηρά, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀντάλλαγμα πεπαιδευμένης ψυχῆς.

|
The strife of the proud is bloodshedding, and their revilings are grievous to the ear.
|
χάρις ἐπὶ χάριτι γυνὴ αἰσχυντηρά, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι σταθμὸς πᾶς ἄξιος ἐγκρατοῦς ψυχῆς.

|
Whoso discovereth secrets loseth his credit; and shall never find friend to his mind.
|
ἥλιος ἀνατέλλων ἐν ὑψίστοις Κυρίου καὶ κάλλος ἀγαθῆς γυναικὸς ἐν κόσμῳ οἰκίας αὐτῆς.
|

|
Love thy friend, and be faithful unto him: but if thou betrayest his secrets, follow no more after him.
|
λύχνος ἐκλάμπων ἐπὶ λυχνίας ἁγίας καὶ κάλλος προσώπου ἐπὶ ἡλικίᾳ στασίμῃ.

|
For as a man hath destroyed his enemy; so hast thou lost the love of thy neighbour.
|
στύλοι χρύσεοι ἐπὶ βάσεως ἀργυρᾶς καὶ πόδες ὡραῖοι ἐπὶ στέρνοις εὐσταθοῦς. [

|
As one that letteth a bird go out of his hand, so hast thou let thy neighbour go, and shalt not get him again.
|
Τέκνον, ἀκμὴν ἡλικίας σου συντήρησον ὑγιῆ, καὶ μὴ δῷς ἀλλοτρίοις τὴν ἰσχύν σου.

|
Follow after him no more, for he is too far off; he is as a roe escaped out of the snare.
|
ἀναζητήσας παντὸς πεδίου εὔγειον κλῆρον σπεῖρε τὰ ἴδια σπέρματα πεποιθὼς τῇ εὐγενείᾳ σου·

|
As for a wound, it may be bound up; and after reviling there may be reconcilement: but he that betrayeth secrets is without hope.
|
οὕτως τὰ γενήματά σου περιόντα καὶ παρρησίαν εὐγενείας ἔχοντα μεγαλυνοῦσι.

|
He that winketh with the eyes worketh evil: and he that knoweth him will depart from him.
|
γυνὴ μισθία ἴση σιάλῳ λογισθήσεται, ὕπανδρος δὲ πύργος θανάτου τοῖς χρωμένοις λογισθήσεται.

|
When thou art present, he will speak sweetly, and will admire thy words: but at the last he will writhe his mouth, and slander thy sayings.
|
γυνὴ ἀσεβὴς ἀνόμῳ μερὶς δοθήσεται, εὐσεβὴς δὲ δίδοται τῷ φοβουμένῳ τὸν Κύριον.

|
I have hated many things, but nothing like him; for the Lord will hate him.
|
γυνὴ ἀσχήμων ἀτιμίαν κατατρίψει, θυγάτηρ δὲ εὐσχήμων καὶ τὸν ἄνδρα ἐντραπήσεται.

|
Whoso casteth a stone on high casteth it on his own head; and a deceitful stroke shall make wounds.
|
γυνὴ ἀδιάτρεπτος ὡς κύων λογισθήσεται, ἡ δὲ ἔχουσα αἰσχύνην τὸν Κύριον φοβηθήσεται.

|
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that setteth a trap shall be taken therein.
|
γυνὴ ἄνδρα ἴδιον τιμῶσα σοφὴ πᾶσι φανήσεται, ἀτιμάζουσα δὲ ἐν ὑπερηφανίᾳ ἀσεβὴς πᾶσι γνωσθήσεται. γυναικὸς ἀγαθῆς μακάριος ὁ ἀνήρ, ὁ γὰρ ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἐτῶν αὐτοῦ διπλάσιος ἔσται.

|
He that worketh mischief, it shall fall upon him, and he shall not know whence it cometh.
|
γυνὴ μεγαλόφωνος καὶ γλωσσώδης ὡς σάλπιγξ πολέμων εἰς τροπὴν θεωρηθήσεται, ἀνθρώπου δὲ παντὸς ψυχὴ ὁμοιότροπος τούτοις, πολέμου ἀκαταστασίαις τὴν ψυχὴν διαιτηθήσεται].—

|
Mockery and reproach are from the proud; but vengeance, as a lion, shall lie in wait for him.
|
᾿Επὶ δυσὶ λελύπηται ἡ καρδία μου, καὶ ἐπὶ τῷ τρίτῳ θυμός μοι ἐπῆλθεν· ἀνὴρ πολεμιστὴς ὑστερῶν δι᾿ ἔνδειαν, καὶ ἄνδρες συνετοὶ ἐὰν σκυβαλισθῶσιν, ἐπανάγων ἀπὸ δικαιοσύνης ἐπὶ ἁμαρτίαν· ὁ Κύριος ἑτοιμάσει εἰς ρομφαίαν αὐτόν.

|
They that rejoice at the fall of the righteous shall be taken in the snare; and anguish shall consume them before they die.
|
Μόλις ἐξελεῖται ἔμπορος ἀπὸ πλημμελείας, καὶ οὐ δικαιωθήσεται κάπηλος ἀπὸ ἁμαρτίας.
|

|
|
Malice and wrath, even these are abominations; and the sinful man shall have them both.
