Chapter 17	Глава 17

1	1
For great are thy judgments, and cannot be expressed: therefore unnurtured souls have erred.	Великі і незбагненні суди Твої, тому ненавчені душі впали в оману.

For when unrighteous men thought to oppress the holy nation; they being shut up in their houses, the prisoners of darkness, and fettered with the bonds of a long night, lay there exiled from the eternal providence.	Бо беззаконні, які задумали гнітити святий народ, в’язні темряви і полонені довгої ночі, зачинившись у домах, ховалися від вічного Промислу.

For while they supposed to lie hid in their secret sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of forgetfulness, being horribly astonished, and troubled with strange apparitions.	Думаючи сховатися у таємних гріхах, вони, під темним покровом забуття, розсіялися, сильно лякані і бентежені примарами,

For neither might the corner that held them keep them from fear: but noises as of waters falling down sounded about them, and sad visions appeared unto them with heavy countenances.	бо і найпотаємніше місце, яке ховало їх, не спасало їх від страху, але страшні звуки навколо їх приводили їх у занепокоєння, і з’являлися люті чудовиська зі страшними лицями.

No power of the fire might give them light: neither could the bright flames of the stars endure to lighten that horrible night.	І ніяка сила вогню не могла озорити, ні яскравий блиск зірок не міг осяяти цю похмуру ніч.

Only there appeared unto them a fire kindled of itself, very dreadful: for being much terrified, they thought the things which they saw to be worse than the sight they saw not.	Являлися їм тільки багаття, які горіли самі собою, повні жаху, і вони, боячись невидимого — примари, уявляли собі видиме ще гіршим.

As for the illusions of art magic, they were put down, and their vaunting in wisdom was reproved with disgrace.	Упали зваби чарівного мистецтва, і вихваляння мудрістю було піддане осміянню,

For they, that promised to drive away terrors and troubles from a sick soul, were sick themselves of fear, worthy to be laughed at.	бо ті, які обіцяли відігнати від страдницької душі жахи і страхи, самі страждали на ганебну боязнь.

For though no terrible thing did fear them; yet being scared with beasts that passed by, and hissing of serpents,	І хоч ніякі страхіття не турбували їх, але, переслідувані бродіннями отруйних звірів і свистами плазунів, вони зникали від страху, боячись глянути навіть на повітря, від якого нікуди не можна втекти,

they died for fear, denying that they saw the air, which could of no side be avoided.	бо нечестя, засуджуване власним свідченням, — боязке і, преслідуване совістю, завжди придумує жахи.

For wickedness, condemned by her own witness, is very timorous, and being pressed with conscience, always forecasteth grievous things.	Страх є не що інше, як позбавлення допомоги від розуму.

For fear is nothing else but a betraying of the succours which reason offereth.	Чим менше надії всередині, тим більше уявляється невідомість причини, що породжує муки.

And the expectation from within, being less, counteth the ignorance more than the cause which bringeth the torment.	І вони у цю істинно нестерпну ніч, що прийшла з глибин нестерпного пекла, приготувавшись заснути звичайним сном,

But they sleeping the same sleep that night, which was indeed intolerable, and which came upon them out of the bottoms of inevitable hell,	то були тривожимі страшними примарами, то розслаблювані душевним смутком, бо находив на них раптовий і неочікуваний страх.

were partly vexed with monstrous apparitions, and partly fainted, their heart failing them: for a sudden fear, and not looked for, came upon them.	Отже, де хто тоді був захоплений, ставав полоненим, і його ув’язнювали у цю темницю без оков.

So then whosoever there fell down was straitly kept, shut up in a prison without iron bars.	Чи був то хлібороб або пастух, або той, хто займався працею в пустелі, усякий, будучи захопленим, підлягав цій неминучій долі;

For whether he were husbandman, or shepherd, or a labourer in the field, he was overtaken, and endured that necessity, which could not be avoided: for they were all bound with one chain of darkness.	бо усі були зв’язані одними нерозв’язними путами темряви. Чи вітер, що свистить, чи милозвучний голос птахів серед густих гілок, чи сила швидкоплинної води, чи сильний тріск падаючого каміння;

Whether it were a whistling wind, or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches, or a pleasing fall of water running violently,	чи невидиме бігання скакаючих тварин, чи голос ревучих диких звірів, чи луна, що віддається з гірських ущелин, усе це, жахаючи їх, повергало у розслаблення.

or a terrible sound of stones cast down, or a running that could not be seen of skipping beasts, or a roaring voice of most savage wild beasts, or a rebounding echo from the hollow mountains: these things made them to swoon for fear.	Бо весь світ був освітлюваний ясним світлом і займався безперешкодно ділами;

For the whole world shined with clear light, and none were hindered in their labour:	а над ними одними була розпростерта важка ніч, образ темряви, що уміла колись обійняти їх; але самі для себе вони були обтяжливішими за темряву.
21
over them only was spread a heavy night, an image of that darkness which should afterward receive them: but yet were they unto themselves more grievous than the darkness.
