| And Jothor the priest of Madiam, the father-in-law of Moses, heard of all that the Lord did to his people Israel; for the Lord brought Israel out of Egypt. | І почув Іофор, священик мадіамський, тесть Мойсеїв, про все, що зробив Бог для Мойсея і для Ізраїля, народу Свого, коли вивів Господь Ізраїля з Єгипту, |

| And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses, took Sepphora the wife of Moses after she had been sent away, | і взяв Іофор, тесть Мойсеїв, Сепфору, дружину Мойсеєву, перед тим повернену, |

| and her two sons: the name of the one was Gersam, his father saying, I was a sojourner in a strange land;— | і двох синів її, з яких одному ім’я Гирсам, тому що говорив Мойсей: я прибулець у землі чужій; |

| and the name of the second Eliezer, saying, For the God of my father is my helper, and he has rescued me out of the hand of Pharao. | а другому ім’я Єлиєзер, тому що [говорив він] Бог батька мого був мені помічником і врятував мене від меча фараонового. |

| And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses, and his sons and his wife, went forth to Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped on the mount of God. | І прийшов Іофор, тесть Мойсея, з синами його і дружиною його до Мойсея в пустелю, де він розташувався станом біля гори Божої, |

| And it was told Moses, saying, Behold, thy father-in-law Jothor is coming to thee, and thy wife and two sons with him. | і дав знати Мойсею: я, тесть твій Іофор, іду до тебе, і дружина твоя, і два сини її з нею. |
|

| And Moses went forth to meet his father-in-law, and did him reverence, and kissed him, and they embraced each other, and he brought them into the tent. | Мойсей вийшов назустріч тестю своєму, і поклонився [йому], і цілував його, і після взаємного привітання вони ввійшли в намет. |
|

| And Moses related to his father-in-law all things that the Lord did to Pharao and all the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the labour that had befallen them in the way, and that the Lord had rescued them out of the hand of Pharao, and out of the hand of the Egyptians. | І розповів Мойсей тестеві своєму про все, що зробив Господь з фараоном і з [усіма] єгиптянами за Ізраїля, і про всі труднощі, які зустріли їх на шляху, і як визволив їх Господь [з руки фараона і з руки єгиптян]. |

| And Jothor was amazed at all the good things which the Lord did to them, forasmuch as he rescued them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharao. | Іофор радів за всі благодіяння, які Господь явив Ізраїлю, коли визволив його з руки єгиптян [і з руки фараона], |

| And Jothor said, Blessed be the Lord, because he has rescued them out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharao. | і сказав Іофор: благословенний Господь, Який визволив вас з руки єгиптян і з руки фараонової, Який визволив народ цей з-під влади єгиптян; |

| Now know I that the Lord is great above all gods, because of this, wherein they attacked them. | нині дізнався я, що Господь великий більше за всіх богів, у тому самому, чим вони підносилися над ізраїльтянами. |
|

| And Jothor the father-in-law of Moses took whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices for God, for Aaron and all the elders of Israel came to eat bread with the father-in-law of Moses before God. | І приніс Іофор, тесть Мойсеїв, всепалення і жертви Богу; і прийшов Аарон і всі старійшини Ізраїлеві їсти хліб з тестем Мойсеєвим перед Богом. |

| And it came to pass after the morrow that Moses sat to judge the people, and all the people stood by Moses from morning till evening. | На другий день сів Мойсей судити народ, і стояв народ перед Мойсеєм з ранку до вечора. |

| And Jothor having seen all that Moses did to the people, says, What is this that thou doest to the people? wherefore sittest thou alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning till evening? | І бачив [Іофор,] тесть Мойсеїв, усе, що він чинить з народом, і сказав: що це таке робиш ти з народом? для чого ти сидиш один, а весь народ стоїть перед тобою з ранку до вечора? |

| And Moses says to his father-in-law, Because the people come to me to seek judgment from God. | І сказав Мойсей тестеві своєму: народ приходить до мене просити суду у Бога; |

|
| For whenever there is a dispute among them, and they come to me, I give judgment upon each, and I teach them the ordinances of God and his law. | коли трапляється в них яка справа, вони приходять до мене, і я суджу між тим та іншим і оголошую [їм] устави Божі і закони Його. |
|

|
| And the father-in-law of Moses said to him, Thou dost not this thing rightly, | Але тесть Мойсеїв сказав йому: не добре це ти робиш: |
|

|
| thou wilt wear away with intolerable weariness, both thou and all this people which is with thee: this thing is hard, thou wilt not be able to endure it thyself alone. | ти змучиш і себе і народ цей, який з тобою, тому що занадто важка для тебе ця справа: ти один не можеш виконувати її; |
|

|
| Now then hearken to me, and I will advise thee, and God shall be with thee: be thou to the people in the things pertaining to God, and thou shalt bring their matters to God. | отже, послухай слів моїх; я дам тобі пораду, і буде Бог з тобою: будь ти для народу посередником перед Богом і представляй Богу справи [його]; |

| And thou shalt testify to them the ordinances of God and his law, and thou shalt shew to them the ways in which they shall walk, and the works which they shall do. | навчай їх уставів [Божих] і законів [Його], указуй їм шлях [Його], яким вони повинні йти, і діла, які вони повинні робити; |
|

|
| And do thou look out for thyself out of all the people able men, fearing God, righteous men, hating pride, and thou shalt set over the people captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens. | ти ж знайди [собі] з усього народу людей здібних, що бояться Бога, людей правдивих, що ненавидять користь, і постав [їх] над ним тисячоначальниками, стоначальниками, п’ятдесятиначальниками і десятиначальниками [і діловодами]; |

| And they shall judge the people at all times, and the too burdensome matter they shall bring to thee, but they shall judge the smaller cases; so they shall relieve thee and help thee. | нехай вони судять народ у всякий час і про всяку важливу справу доносять тобі, а всі малі справи судять самі: і буде тобі легше, і вони понесуть з тобою тягар; |

| If thou wilt do this thing, God shall strengthen thee, and thou shalt be able to attend, and all this people shall come with peace into their own place. | якщо ти зробиш це, і Бог повелить тобі, то ти можеш устояти, і весь народ цей буде відходити у своє місце з миром. |

|
| And Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did whatsoever he said to him. | І послухав Мойсей слова тестя свого і зробив усе, що він говорив [йому]; |

|
| And Moses chose out able men out of all Israel, and he made them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties and captains of tens over the people. | і вибрав Мойсей із усього Ізраїля здібних людей і поставив їх начальниками народу, тисячоначальниками, стоначальниками, п’ятдесятиначальниками і десятиначальниками [і діловодами], |

| And they judged the people at all times; and every too burdensome matter they brought to Moses, but every light matter they judged themselves. | і судили вони народ у всякий час; про [усі] справи важливі доносили Мойсеєві, а всі малі діла судили самі. |

| And Moses dismissed his father-in-law, and he returned to his own land. | І відпустив Мойсей тестя свого, і він пішов у землю свою. |
