| Після того, як Олександр, син Филипа, македонянин, який вийшов із землі Киттим, уразив Дарія, царя Перського і Мідійського, і став царем замість нього спершу над Елладою, — | And it happened, after that Alexander son of Philip, the Macedonian, who came out of the land of Chettiim, had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes, that he reigned in his stead, the first over Greece, |

| він провів багато воєн і оволодів багатьма укріпленими місцями, й убивав царів землі. | and made many wars, and won many strong holds, and slew the kings of the earth, |
|

|

|
| І пройшов до меж землі й узяв здобич від багатьох народів; і замовкла земля перед ним, і він піднісся, і загордувало серце його. | and went through to the ends of the earth, and took spoils of many nations, insomuch that the earth was quiet before him; whereupon he was exalted, and his heart was lifted up. |

| Він зібрав дуже сильне військо і панував над областями і народами і володарями, і вони зробилися його данниками. | And he gathered a mighty strong host, and ruled over countries, and nations, and kings, who became tributaries unto him. |

| Після того він зліг у постіль і, відчувши, що помирає, | And after these things he fell sick, and perceived that he should die. |

| покликав знатних слуг своїх, які виховувалися з ним від юности, і розділив їм своє царство ще за життя свого. | Wherefore he called his servants, such as were honourable, and had been brought up with him from his youth, and parted his kingdom among them, while he was yet alive. |

| Олександр царював дванадцять років і помер. | So Alexander reigned twelve years, and then died. |
|

|
| І володарювали слуги його кожен у своєму місці. | And his servants bare rule every one in his place. |
|

|
| І після смерти його усі вони поклали на себе вінці, а після них і сини їхні протягом багатьох літ; і примножили зло на землі. | And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves; so did their sons after them many years: and evils were multiplied in the earth. |
|

|
| І вийшов від них корінь гріха — Антиох Єпифан, син царя Антиоха, який був заручником у Римі, і став царем у сто тридцять сьомому році царства Еллінського. | And there came out of them a wicked root, Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king, who had been an hostage at Rome, and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks. |

| У ті дні вийшли з Ізраїля сини беззаконні і переконували багатьох, говорячи: підемо й укладемо союз з народами, які оточують нас, бо з тих пір, як ми відокремилися від них, спіткало нас багато бід. | In those days went there out of Israel wicked men, who persuaded many, saying, Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us: for since we departed from them we have had much sorrow. |

| І добрим здалося це слово в очах їхніх. | So this device pleased them well. |
|

| Деякі з народу виявили бажання і вирушили до царя; і він дав їм право виконувати установлення язичницькі. | Then certain of the people were so forward herein, that they went to the king, who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen: |
|

|
| Вони побудували в Єрусалимі училище за звичаєм язичницьким | whereupon they built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen: |
|

|
| і встановили у себе необрізання, і відступили від святого завіту, і з’єдналися з язичниками, і продалися, щоб чинити зло. | and made themselves uncircumcised, and forsook the holy covenant, and joined themselves to the heathen, and were sold to do mischief. |

| Коли Антиох побачив, що царство зміцнилося, взявся стати царем над Єгиптом, щоб царювати над двома царствами, | Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus, he thought to reign over Egypt, that he might have the dominion of two realms. |
|

|
| й увійшов він у Єгипет із сильним ополченням, з колісницями, і слонами, і вершниками, і численними кораблями; | Wherefore he entered into Egypt with a great multitude, with chariots, and elephants, and horsemen, and a great navy, |
|

|
| і вступив у битву із Птоломеєм, царем Єгипетським; і убоявся Птоломей від лиця його і кинувся навтіки, і багато упало поранених. | and made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt: but Ptolemee was afraid of him, and fled; and many were wounded to death. |

|
| І оволоділи вони укріпленими містами у землі Єгипетській, і узяв він здобич із землі Єгипетської. | Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt, and he took the spoils thereof. |
|

|
| Після поразки Єгипту Антиох повернувся у сто сорок третьому році і пішов проти Ізраїля, і вступив у Єрусалим із сильним ополченням; | And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt, he returned again in the hundred forty and third year, and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude, |

| увійшов у святилище з пихатістю і взяв золотий жертовник, світильник і всі сосуди його, | and entered proudly into the sanctuary, and took away the golden altar, and the candlestick of light, and all the vessels thereof, |
|

|
| і трапезу предкладення, й узливальниці, і чаші, і кадильниці золоті, і завісу, і вінці, і золоту прикрасу, що була ззовні храму, і все обібрав. | and the table of the shewbread, and the pouring vessels, and the vials, and the censers of gold, and the veil, and the crowns, and the golden ornaments that were before the temple, all which he pulled off. |

| Узяв і срібло, і золото, і дорогоцінні сосуди, і взяв сховані скарби, які відшукав. | He took also the silver and the gold, and the precious vessels: also he took the hidden treasures which he found. |
|

| І, взявши все, вирушив у землю свою і вчинив убивства, і говорив з великою гордовитістю. | And when he had taken all away, he went into his own land, having made a great massacre, and spoken very proudly. |
|

|
| Тому був великий плач в Ізраїлі, в усіх місцях його. | Therefore there was great mourning in Israel, in every place where they were; |
|

|
| Стогнали начальники і старійшини, знемагали діви і юнаки, і змінилася краса жіноча. | so that the princes and elders mourned, the virgins and young men were made feeble, and the beauty of women was changed. |
|

|
| Усякий наречений віддавався плачу, і та, що сиділа у шлюбному чертозі, була у скорботі. | Every bridegroom took up lamentation, and she that sat in the marriage chamber was in heaviness. |
|

| Затремтіла земля за тих, що жили на ній, і весь дім Якова зодягнувся у сором. | The land also was moved for the inhabitants thereof, and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion. |
|

|
| Після двох років послав цар начальника податей у міста Іуди, і він прийшов у Єрусалим з великим натовпом; | And after two years fully expired, the king sent his chief collector of tribute unto the cities of Juda, who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude, |

|
| підступно говорив їм слова миру, і вони повірили йому; але він раптово напав на місто й уразив його великим ураженням, і погубив безліч народу ізраїльського; | and spake peaceable words unto them, but all was deceit: for when they had given him credence, he fell suddenly upon the city, and smote it very sore, and destroyed much people of Israel. |

| взяв здобич з міста і спалив його вогнем, і зруйнував доми його і стіни його навколо; | And when he had taken the spoils of the city, he set it on fire, and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side. |

| і повели у полон дружин і дітей, і оволоділи худобою. | But the women and children took they captive, and possessed the cattle. |
|

|
| Обгородили місто Давидове великою і міцною стіною і міцними вежами, і зробилося воно для них фортецею. | Then builded they the city of David with a great and strong wall, and with mighty towers, and made it a stronghold for them. |
|

| І розташували там народ нечестивий, людей беззаконних, і вони укріпилися у ній; | And they put therein a sinful nation, wicked men, and fortified themselves therein. |
|

|
| запаслися зброєю і продовольством і, зібравши здобич єрусалимську, склали там, і зробилися великою сіттю. | They stored it also with armour and victuals, and when they had gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem, they laid them up there, and so they became a sore snare: |
|

|
| І було це постійною засідкою для святилища і злим дияволом для Ізраїля. | for it was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary, and an evil adversary to Israel. |
|
37
|
37
|
| Вони проливали невинну кров навколо святилища й оскверняли святилище. | Thus they shed innocent blood on every side of the sanctuary, and defiled it: |
|

|
38
|
| Жителі ж Єрусалима розбіглися через них, і він зробився житлом чужих і став чужим для свого роду, і діти його залишили його. | insomuch that the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them: whereupon the city was made an habitation of strangers, and became strange to those that were born in her; and her own children left her. |

| Святилище його запустіло, як пустеля, свята його повернулися на плач, суботи його — на ганьбу, честь його — на приниження. | Her sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness, her feasts were turned into mourning, her sabbaths into reproach, her honour into contempt. |

| Мірою слави його збільшилося нечестя його, і висота його обернулася на сум. | As had been her glory, so was her dishonour increased, and her excellency was turned into mourning. |
|

|
| Цар Антиох написав усьому царству своєму, щоб усі були одним народом, | Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom, that all should be one people, |
|

|
42
|
| і щоб кожен залишив свій закон. І погодилися всі народи за словом царя. | and every one should leave his laws: so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king. |
|
43
|
43
|
| І багато хто з Ізраїля прийняв ідолослужіння його і приніс жертви ідолам, і осквернив суботу. | Yea, many also of the Israelites consented to his religion, and sacrificed unto idols, and profaned the sabbath. |
|

|
44
|
| Цар послав через вісників грамоти в Єрусалим і в міста юдейські, щоб вони додержувалися узаконень, чужих для цієї землі, | For the king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda, that they should follow the strange laws of the land, |
|
45
|
45
|
| і щоб не допускалися всепалення і жертвоприношення, й узливання у святилищі, щоб учинили наругу над суботами і святами, | and forbid burnt offerings, and sacrifice, and drink offerings, in the temple; and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days: |
|

|
46
|
| і оскверняли святилище і святих, | and pollute the sanctuary and holy people: |
|
47
|
47
|
| щоб будували жертовники, храми і капища ідольські, і приносили у жертву свиняче м’ясо і худобу нечисту, | set up altars, and groves, and chapels of idols, and sacrifice swine's flesh, and unclean beasts: |
|

|
48
|
| і залишали синів своїх необрізаними, й оскверняли душі їхні всякою нечистотою і мерзотою, | that they should also leave their children uncircumcised, and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation: |
|

|
49
|
| для того, щоб забули закон і змінили всі постанови. | to the end they might forget the law, and change all the ordinances. |
|

|
50
|
| А якщо хто не зробить за словом царя, нехай буде відданий на смерть. | And whosoever would not do according to the commandment of the king, he said, he should die. |
|

|
51
|
| Згідно з цим писав він усьому царству своєму і поставив наглядачів над усім народом, і повелів містам юдейським приносити жертви у кожному місті. | In the selfsame manner wrote he to his whole kingdom, and appointed overseers over all the people, commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice, city by city. |

| І зібралися до них багато хто з народу, усі, хто залишив закон, — і вчинили зло у землі; | Then many of the people were gathered unto them, to wit, every one that forsook the law; and so they committed evils in the land; |
|

|
| і змусили Ізраїля ховатися у всякому сховищі його. | and drove the Israelites into secret places, even wheresoever they could flee for succour. |
|

|
54
|
| У п’ятнадцятий день Хаслева, сто сорок п’ятого року, влаштували на жертовнику мерзоту запустіння, і в містах юдейських навколо побудували жертовники, | Now the fifteenth day of the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and fifth year, they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar, and builded idol altars throughout the cities of Juda on every side; |

| і перед дверима домів і на вулицях звершували куріння, | and burnt incense at the doors of their houses, and in the streets. |
|

|
| і книги закону, які знаходили, розривали і спалювали на вогні; | And when they had rent in pieces the books of the law which they found, they burnt them with fire. |
|
57
|
57
|
| у кого знаходили книгу завіту, і хто дотримувався закону, того, за повелінням царя, віддавали на смерть. | And wheresoever was found with any the book of the testament, or if any consented to the law, the king's commandment was, that they should put him to death. |
|

|
| Таке насильство чинили вони над ізраїльтянами, які приходили кожного місяця у міста. | Thus did they by their authority unto the Israelites every month, to as many as were found in the cities. |
|

59
|
| І в двадцять п’ятий день місяця, приносячи жертви на жертовнику, який був над вівтарем, | Now the five and twentieth day of the month they did sacrifice upon the idol altar, which was upon the altar of God. |
|

|
60
|
| вони, за даним повелінням, убивали жінок, які обрізували дітей своїх, | At which time according to the commandment they put to death certain women, that had caused their children to be circumcised. |

|

| Але багато (*людей) в Ізраїлі залишилися твердими й укріпилися, щоб не їсти нечистого, | Howbeit many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat any unclean thing. |

| і готові були померти, щоб не осквернитися їжею і не вчинити наруги над святим завітом, — і помирали. | Wherefore they chose rather to die, that they might not be defiled with meats, and that they might not profane the holy covenant: so then they died. |
|

|
| І був дуже великий гнів над Ізраїлем. | And there was very great wrath upon Israel. |

|
Chapter 2
|

|
| У ті дні повстав Маттафія, син Іоана, сина Симеонового, священик із синів Іоарива з Єрусалима; жив він у Модині. | In those days arose Mattathias the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and dwelt in Modin. |

|
| У нього було п’ять синів: Іоан, прозваний Гаддисом, | And he had five sons, Joannan, called Caddis: |
|

|
| Симон, прозваний Фассі, | Simon, called Thassi: |
|

|
4
|
| Іуда, прозваний Маккавеєм, | Judas, who was called Maccabeus: |
|

|
5
|
| Єлеазар, названий Авараном, Іонафан, прозваний Апфусом. | Eleazar, called Avaran: and Jonathan, whose surname was Apphus. |
|

|
| Бачачи богохульства, які відбувалися в Юдеї та Єрусалимі, | And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem, |
|

|
7
|
| він сказав: горе мені! для чого народився я бачити руйнування народу мого і руйнування святого міста і залишатися тут, коли він відданий до рук ворогів і святилище — до рук чужих? | he said, Woe is me! wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people, and of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy, and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers? |

| Храм його зробився, як муж безславний, | Her temple is become as a man without glory. |
|

|
| дорогоцінні сосуди його віднесені у полон, немовлята його побиті на вулицях, юнаки його упали від меча ворога. | Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity, her infants are slain in the streets, her young men with the sword of the enemy. |
|

|

|
| Який народ не займав царства його і не оволодівав здобутками його? | What nation hath not had a part in her kingdom, and gotten of her spoils? |
|

|
11
|
| Усі прикраси його забрані; з вільного він зробився рабом. | All her ornaments are taken away; of a free woman she has become a bondslave. |
|

|

|
| І ось святині наші, і краса наша, і слава наша спорожніли, і язичники осквернили їх. | And, behold, our sanctuary, even our beauty and our glory, is laid waste, and the Gentiles have profaned it. |
|

|
13
|
| Для чого нам ще жити? | To what end therefore shall we live any longer? |
|

|

|
| І роздерли Маттафія і сини його одяг свій, і одяглися у веретища, і гірко плакали. | Then Mattathias and his sons rent their clothes, and put on sackcloth, and mourned very sore. |
|
15
|
15
|
| І прийшли від царя у місто Модин ті, що примушували до відступництва, щоб приносити жертви. | In the mean while the king's officers, such as compelled the people to revolt, came into the city Modin, to make them sacrifice. |
|

|
16
|
| І багато хто з Ізраїля пристав до них; а Маттафія і сини його устояли. | And when many of Israel came unto them, Mattathias also and his sons came together. |
|

|
| І відповіли ті, що прийшли від царя, і сказали Маттафії: ти вождь, ти славний і великий у цьому місті і маєш опору в синах і братах. | Then answered the king's officers, and said to Mattathias on this wise, Thou art a ruler, and an honourable and great man in this city, and strengthened with sons and brethren: |

| Отже, приступи тепер перший, і виконай повеління царя, як зробили це всі народи і мужі юдейські і ті, що залишилися в Єрусалимі, і будеш ти і дім твій у числі друзів царських, і ти і сини твої будете вшановані і сріблом, і золотом, і багатьма дарами. | now therefore come thou first, and fulfil the king's commandment, like as all the nations have done, yea, and the men of Juda also, and such as remain at Jerusalem: so shalt thou and thy house be in the number of the king's friends, and thou and thy children shall be honoured with silver and gold, and many rewards. |

| І відповів Маттафія і сказав гучним голосом: якщо і всі народи в області царства царя послухають його і відступлять кожен від богослужіння батьків своїх, і погодяться з повеліннями його, | Then Mattathias answered and spake with a loud voice, Though all the nations that are under the king's dominion obey him, and fall away every one from the religion of their fathers, and give consent to his commandments: |

| то я і сини мої і брати мої будемо чинити за завітом батьків наших. | yet will I and my sons and my brethren walk in the covenant of our fathers. |
|

|

|
| Помилуй нас Бог, щоб залишити закон і постанови! | God forbid that we should forsake the law and the ordinances. |
|
22
|
22
|
| Не послухаємо ми слів царя, щоб відступити нам від нашого богослужіння праворуч або ліворуч. | We will not hearken to the king's words, to go from our religion, either on the right hand, or the left. |
|

|

|
| Коли закінчив він говорити ці слова, підійшов муж юдеянин перед очима усіх, щоб принести за повелінням царя ідольську жертву на жертовнику, який був у Модині. | Now when he had left speaking these words, there came one of the Jews in the sight of all to sacrifice on the altar which was at Modin, according to the king's commandment. |

| Побачивши це, Маттафія возревнував, і затремтіли нутрощі його, і запалала лють його за закон, і він, підбігши, убив його біля жертовника. | Which thing when Mattathias saw, he was inflamed with zeal, and his reins trembled, neither could he forbear to shew his anger according to judgment: wherefore he ran, and slew him upon the altar. |

| І в той же час убив мужа царського, який примушував приносити жертву, і зруйнував жертовник. | Also the king's commissioner, who compelled men to sacrifice, he killed at that time, and the altar he pulled down. |

|
| І возревнував він за закон, як це зробили Финеєс із Замврієм, сином Салома. | Thus dealt he zealously for the law of God, like as Phinees did unto Zambri the son of Salom. |
|

|

|
| І викликнув Маттафія у місті гучним голосом: усякий, хто ревнує за закон і стоїть у завіті, нехай йде слідом за мною! | And Mattathias cried throughout the city with a loud voice, saying, Whosoever is zealous of the law, and maintaineth the covenant, let him follow me. |

| І втік сам і сини його у гори, залишивши все, що мали у місті. | So he and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that ever they had in the city. |
|

|
| Тоді багато (*людей), відданих правді і закону, пішли в пустелю і залишалися там, | Then many that sought after justice and judgment went down into the wilderness, to dwell there: |
|

|
| самі і сини їхні, і дружини їхні, і худоба їхня, тому що примножилися біди їхні. | both they and their children, and their wives, and their cattle; because afflictions increased sore upon them. |
|

|

|
| І сповіщено було мужам царським і війську, яке знаходилося в Єрусалимі, місті Давидовому, що деякі мужі, порушивши царське повеління, пішли у таємні місця у пустелю. | Now when it was told the king's servants, and the host that was at Jerusalem, in the city of David, that certain men, who had broken the king's commandment, were gone down into the secret places in the wilderness, |

| І погналися за ними у великій кількості і, наздогнавши їх, ополчилися, і вишикувалися до битви проти них у день суботній, | they pursued after them a great number, and having overtaken them, they camped against them, and made war against them on the sabbath day. |
|

|
| і сказали їм: тепер ще можна; виходьте і зробіть за словом царя, і залишитеся живими. | And they said unto them, Let that which ye have done hitherto suffice; come forth, and do according to the commandment of the king, and ye shall live. |
|

|
| Але вони відповіли: не вийдемо і не зробимо за словом царя, не осквернимо дня суботнього. | But they said, We will not come forth, neither will we do the king's commandment, to profane the sabbath day. |
|

|
35
|
| Тоді поспішили почати битву проти них. | So then they gave them the battle with all speed. |
|

|
36
|
| Але вони не відповідали їм, ні навіть каменя не кинули на них, ані загородили таємних сховищ своїх, | Howbeit they answered them not, neither cast they a stone at them, nor stopped the places where they lay hid; |
|
37
|
37
|
| і сказали: ми всі помремо у невинності нашій; небо і земля свідки за нас, що ви несправедливо губите нас. | but said, Let us die all in our innocency: heaven and earth shall testify for us, that ye put us to death wrongfully. |
|

|

|
| Нападали на них по суботах, і померло їх, і дружин їхніх, і дітей їхніх з худобою їхньою, до тисячі душ. | So they rose up against them in battle on the sabbath, and they slew them, with their wives and children, and their cattle, to the number of a thousand people. |
|

|
| Коли дізналися про це Маттафія і друзі його, гірко плакали за ними; | Now when Mattathias and his friends understood hereof, they mourned for them right sore. |
|
40
|
40
|
| і говорили одне одному: якщо всі ми будемо чинити так, як чинили ці брати наші, і не будемо битися з язичниками за життя наше і постанови наші, то вони скоро знищать нас із землі. | And one of them said to another, If we all do as our brethren have done, and fight not for our lives and laws against the heathen, they will now quickly root us out of the earth. |

| І вирішили вони у той день і сказали: хто б не пішов на війну проти нас у день суботній, будемо битися проти нього, щоб нам не померти всім, як померли брати наші в потаємних сховищах. | At that time therefore they decreed, saying, Whosoever shall come to make battle with us on the sabbath day, we will fight against him: neither will we die all, as our brethren that were murdered in the secret places. |

| Тоді зібралося до них багато юдеїв, міцних силою в Ізраїлі, всі вірні закону. | Then came there unto him a company of Assideans, who were mighty men of Israel, even all such as were voluntarily devoted unto the law. |

|
| І всі, що втекли від біди, приєдналися до них і стали підкріпленням для них. | Also all they that fled for persecution joined themselves unto them, and were a stay unto them. |
|
44
|
44
|
| Так склали вони військо й уражали у гніві своєму нечестивих і у люті своїй мужів беззаконних; інші ж бігли для порятунку до язичників. | So they joined their forces, and smote sinful men in their anger, and wicked men in their wrath: but the rest fled to the heathen for succour. |
|

|
45
|
| І обходили навколо Маттафія і друзі його, і руйнували жертовники, | Then Mattathias and his friends went round about, and pulled down the altars: |
|

|
| і безбоязно обрізували необрізаних дітей, скільки знаходили у межах ізраїльських, | and what children soever they found within the coast of Israel uncircumcised, those they circumcised valiantly. |

| і переслідували синів гордині, і справа успішно йшла у руках їхніх. | They pursued also after the proud men, and the work prospered in their hand. |

| Так захищали вони закон від руки язичників і від руки царів і не дали торжествувати грішникові. | So they recovered the law out of the hand of the Gentiles, and out of the hand of kings, neither suffered they the sinner to triumph. |

| Наблизилися дні смерти Маттафії, і він сказав синам своїм: нині посилилися гордість і випробування, нині час перевороту і гнів люті. | Now when the time drew near that Mattathias should die, he said unto his sons, Now have pride and rebuke gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of indignation: |

| Халев за свідчення перед зібранням одержав у спадщину землю. | Caleb for bearing witness before the congregation received the heritage of the land. |

|
| Давид за своє милосердя успадкував престіл царства навіки. | David for being merciful possessed the throne of an everlasting kingdom. |
|

|
58
|
| Ілля за велику ревність щодо закону взятий навіть на небо. | Elias for being zealous and fervent for the law was taken up into heaven. |
|

|
59
|
| Ананія, Азарія, Мисаїл вірою спаслися від полум’я. | Ananias, Azarias, and Misael, by believing were saved out of the flame. |
|
60
|
60
|
| Даниїл за свою невинність був урятований від щелеп левів. | Daniel for his innocency was delivered from the mouth of lions. |
|

|
| Отже, пригадуйте від роду до роду, що всі, які надіялися на Нього, не знеможуть. | And thus consider ye throughout all ages, that none that put their trust in him shall be overcome. |
|

|
| Не бійтеся слів чоловіка грішного, бо слава його перетвориться на гній і черву. | Fear not then the words of a sinful man: for his glory shall be dung and worms. |
|

|
| Сьогодні він підноситься, а завтра не знайдуть його, бо він перетворився на прах свій, і задум його загинув. | To day he shall be lifted up, and to morrow he shall not be found, because he is returned into his dust, and his thought is come to nothing. |

| Але ви, діти мої, кріпіться і мужньо стійте у законі, бо через нього ви прославитесь. | Wherefore, ye my sons, be valiant, and shew yourselves men in the behalf of the law; for by it shall ye obtain glory. |

| Ось — Симон, брат ваш: знаю, що він — муж ради, слухайтеся його в усі дні; він буде вам замість батька. | And, behold, I know that your brother Simon is a man of counsel, give ear unto him alway: he shall be a father unto you. |

| А Іуда Маккавей, міцний силою від юности своєї, нехай буде у вас начальником війська, і буде вести війну з народами. | As for Judas Maccabeus, he hath been mighty and strong, even from his youth up: let him be your captain, and fight the battle of the people. |

|
| Отже, зберіть до себе всіх виконавців закону і мстіться за обра́зи народу вашого; | Take also unto you all those that observe the law, and avenge ye the wrong of your people. |
|

|
68
|
| віддайте воздаяння язичникам і будьте уважні до повелінь закону. | Recompense fully the heathen, and take heed to the commandments of the law. |
|

|
| І благословив їх і відійшов до батьків своїх. | So he blessed them, and was gathered to his fathers. |
|
70
|
70
|
| Помер же він на сто сорок шостому році; і сини його поховали його у гробі батьків своїх у Модині, і весь Ізраїль оплакував його гірким плачем. | And he died in the hundred forty and sixth year, and his sons buried him in the sepulchres of his fathers at Modin, and all Israel made great lamentation for him. |

|
| І постав замість нього Іуда, названий Маккавеєм, син його. | Then his son Judas, called Maccabeus, rose up in his stead. |
|

|

|
| І допомагали йому всі брати його і всі, які були прихильні до батька його, і вели війну Ізраїля з радістю. | And all his brethren helped him, and so did all they that held with his father, and they fought with cheerfulness the battle of Israel. |
|

|
3
|
| Він поширив славу народу свого; він одягався у броню, як велетень, оперізувався військовою зброєю своєю і вів війну, захищаючи ополчення мечем; | So he gat his people great honour, and put on a breastplate as a giant, and girt his warlike harness about him, and he made battles, protecting the host with his sword. |

|
| він уподібнювався леву у ділах своїх і був як скимен, що рикає на здобич; | In his acts he was like a lion, and like a lion's whelp roaring for his prey. |
|

|
| він переслідував беззаконних, відшукуючи їх, і тих, хто підбурює народ його, спалював. | For he pursued the wicked, and sought them out, and burnt up those that vexed his people. |
|

|
| І упокорилися беззаконні зі страху перед ним, і всі чинителі беззаконня засмутилися перед ним, і благоуспішним було спасіння рукою його. | Wherefore the wicked shrunk for fear of him, and all the workers of iniquity were troubled, because salvation prospered in his hand. |
|

|
7
|
| Він засмутив багатьох царів, і звеселив Якова ділами своїми, і пам’ять його довіку у благословенні; | He grieved also many kings, and made Jacob glad with his acts, and his memorial is blessed for ever. |
|

|
8
|
| пройшов по містах Юдеї і знищив у ній нечестивих, і відвернув гнів від Ізраїля, | Moreover he went through the cities of Juda, destroying the ungodly out of them, and turning away wrath from Israel: |
|

|
9
|
| і зробився іменитим до останніх меж землі, і зібрав тих, що гинули. | so that he was renowned unto the utmost part of the earth, and he received unto him such as were ready to perish. |
|
10
|
10
|
| Тоді Аполлоній зібрав язичників і з Самарії численне військо, щоб воювати проти Ізраїля. | Then Apollonius gathered the Gentiles together, and a great host out of Samaria, to fight against Israel. |
|
11
|
11
|
| Іуда дізнався про це і вийшов йому назустріч, і уразив, і убив його; і багато впало уражених, а інші втекли. | Which thing when Judas perceived, he went forth to meet him, and so he smote him, and slew him: many also fell down slain, but the rest fled. |
|

|
12
|
| І взяв Іуда здобич їх, і взяв меч Аполлонія і воював ним в усі дні. | Wherefore Judas took their spoils, and Apollonius' sword also, and therewith he fought all his life long. |
|

|

|
| І почув Сирон, воєначальник Сирії, що Іуда зібрав навколо себе людей і сонм вірних, що виступають з ним на війну, | Now when Seron, a prince of the army of Syria, heard say that Judas had gathered unto him a multitude and company of the faithful to go out with him to war; |
|

|
14
|
| і сказав: зроблю собі ім’я і прославлюсь у царстві, і буду битися з Іудою і з тими, які разом з ним і які нехтують слово царське. | he said, I will get me a name and honour in the kingdom; for I will go fight with Judas and them that are with him, who despise the king's commandment. |
|

|
15
|
| І вирішив він іти, і пішло з ним сильне полчище нечестивих допомагати йому і зробити помсту на синах Ізраїля. | So he made him ready to go up, and there went with him a mighty host of the ungodly to help him, and to be avenged of the children of Israel. |
|

|
16
|
| Коли вони наблизилися до узвишшя Вефорона, Іуда вийшов назустріч їм з небагатьма, | And when he came near to the going up of Bethhoron, Judas went forth to meet him with a small company: |
|

|
17
|
| які, коли побачили військо, яке ішло назустріч їм, сказали Іуді: як можемо ми у такій малій кількості битися проти такої сильної безлічі? І ми ж зовсім ослабли, ще не ївши сьогодні. | who, when they saw the host coming to meet them, said unto Judas, How shall we be able, being so few, to fight against so great a multitude and so strong, seeing we are ready to faint with fasting all this day? |

| Але Іуда сказав їм: легко і багатьом потрапити у руки небагатьох, і у Бога небесного немає різниці, чи багатьма спасти, чи небагатьма; | Unto whom Judas answered, It is no hard matter for many to be shut up in the hands of a few; and with the God of heaven it is all one, to deliver with a great multitude, or a small company; |

|
| бо не від кількости війська буває перемога на війні, але з неба приходить сила. | for the victory of battle standeth not in the multitude of an host; but strength cometh from heaven. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Вони йдуть проти нас у безлічі пихатости і нечестя, щоб знищити нас і дружин наших і дітей наших, щоб пограбувати нас; | They come against us in much pride and iniquity to destroy us, and our wives and children, and to spoil us: |
|
21
|
21
|
| а ми боремося за душі наші і закони наші. | but we fight for our lives and our laws. |
|
22
|
22
|
| Він Сам знищить їх перед лицем нашим; ви ж не страшіться їх. | Wherefore the Lord himself will overthrow them before our face: and as for you, be ye not afraid of them. |
|

23
|
| Переставши говорити, він раптово кинувся на них, і уражений був Сирон і військо його перед ним. | Now as soon as he had left off speaking, he leaped suddenly upon them, and so Seron and his host were overthrown before him. |
|
24
|
24
|
| І вони переслідували його по спуску Вефорона до самої рівнини; і упало з них до восьмисот мужів, інші ж утекли у землю Филистимську. | And they pursued them from the going down of Bethhoron unto the plain, where were slain about eight hundred men of them; and the residue fled into the land of the Philistines. |
|

|
| І напав страх перед Іудою і братами його і боязнь нападати на всіх навколишніх язичників. | Then began the fear of Judas and his brethren, and exceeding great dread, to fall upon the nations round about them: |
|

|
| Дійшло і до царя ім’я його, і всі народи розповідали про битви Іуди. | insomuch as his fame came unto the king, and all nations talked of the battles of Judas. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Коли ж почув ці слова цар Антиох, то запалав гнівом і, пославши, зібрав усі сили царства свого, дуже сильне ополчення; | Now when king Antiochus heard these things, he was full of indignation: wherefore he sent and gathered together all the forces of his realm, even a very strong army. |
|

|
| і відкрив скарбницю свою і видав військам своїм річну платню, і наказав їм бути готовими на всяку необхідність. | He opened also his treasure, and gave his soldiers pay for a year, commanding them to be ready whensoever he should need them. |
|

|

|
| Але побачив, що виснажилося срібло у скарбницях, а податі країни мізерні через хвилювання і руйнування, які він учинив у землі тій, знищуючи закони, які існували від днів давніх. | Nevertheless, when he saw that the money of his treasures failed, and that the tributes in the country were small, because of the dissension and plague, which he had brought upon the land in taking away the laws which had been of old time; |

| І почав він побоюватися, що у нього не вистачить, хіба тільки на раз або два, на витрати і подарунки, які раніше роздавав щедрою рукою і перевершив у тім попередніх царів. | he feared that he should not be able to bear the charges any longer, nor to have such gifts to give so liberally as he did before: for he had abounded above the kings that were before him. |

| Сильно заклопотаний у душі своїй, він зважився йти у Персію і взяти податі з країн і зібрати побільше срібла. | Wherefore, being greatly perplexed in his mind, he determined to go into Persia, there to take the tributes of the countries, and to gather much money. |
|

|
| А діла царські від ріки Євфрату до меж Єгипту передав Лісію, чоловікові знаменитому, який походив з роду царського, | So he left Lysias, a nobleman, and one of the blood royal, to oversee the affairs of the king from the river Euphrates unto the borders of Egypt: |

|
| також і виховання сина свого Антиоха, до його повернення; | and to bring up his son Antiochus, until he came again. |
|
34
|
34
|
| і передав йому половину війська і слонів, давши йому наказ про все, чого хотів, і про жителів Юдеї та Єрусалима, | Moreover he delivered unto him the half of his forces, and the elephants, and gave him charge of all things that he would have done, as also concerning them that dwelt in Juda and Jerusalem; |
|

|
| щоб він послав проти них військо розбити і знищити могутність Ізраїля і залишок Єрусалима, і знищити пам’ять їх з місця того, | to wit, that he should send an army against them, to destroy and root out the strength of Israel, and the remnant of Jerusalem, and to take away their memorial from that place; |
|

|
| і поселити у всіх краях їхніх синів іноплемінних і розділити за жеребом землю їхню. | and that he should place strangers in all their quarters, and divide their land by lot. |
|

|
37
|
| Цар же взяв іншу половину війська і вирушив з Антиохії, престольного міста свого, у сто сорок сьомому році, і, перейшовши ріку Євфрат, пройшов верхні країни. | So the king took the half of the forces that remained, and departed from Antioch, his royal city, the hundred forty and seventh year; and he passed the river Euphrates, and went through the high countries. |

| Лісій обрав Птоломея, сина Дорименового, і Никанора і Горгія, мужів сильних із друзів царя, | Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes, and Nicanor, and Gorgias, mighty men of the king's friends: |

|
| і послав з ними сорок тисяч мужів і сім тисяч вершників, щоб іти у землю Юдейську і розорити її за словом царя. | and with them he sent forty thousand footmen, and seven thousand horsemen, to go into the land of Juda, and to destroy it, as the king commanded. |
|

|
40
|
| Вони вирушили з усім військом своїм і, прийшовши, розташувалися на рівнині біля Еммаума. | So they went forth with all their power, and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain country. |
|
41
|
41
|
| Купці цієї країни почули ім’я їх і, узявши дуже багато срібла і золота і слуг, прийшли у стан купувати синів Ізраїля у раби; до них приєдналося і військо Сирії і землí іноплемінних. | And the merchants of the country, hearing the fame of them, took silver and gold very much, with servants, and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves: a power also of Syria and of the land of the Philistines joined themselves unto them. |

| Побачили Іуда і брати його, що примножилися біди, і війська розташувалися станом у межах їхніх; довідалися і про повеління царя, яке він наказав виконати над народом, щоб погубити і знищити його. | Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied, and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders; for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people, and utterly abolish them; |

| І говорили кожен ближньому своєму: піднімемо повалений народ наш і будемо битися за народ наш і за святиню. | they said one to another, Let us restore the decayed estate of our people, and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary. |
|

|

|
| І зібрався сонм, щоб бути готовими до війни і помолитися, і виблагати милости і жалю. | Then the congregation gathered together, that they might be ready for battle, and that they might pray, and ask mercy and compassion. |
|
45
|
45
|
| Єрусалим був безлюдний, як пустеля; не було ні того, хто входить у нього, ні того, хто виходить з нього, із природних жителів його; святилище було потоптане, і сини інородних були в укріпленні його; він став житлом язичників; і відняті були веселощі в Якова, і не чутно стало сопілки і цитри. | Now Jerusalem was laid void as a wilderness, there was none of her children that went in or out: the sanctuary also was trodden down, and aliens kept the strong hold; the heathen had their habitation in that place; and joy was taken from Jacob, and the pipe with the harp ceased. |

| Отже, вони зібралися і пішли у Массифу, навпроти Єрусалима, бо місце молитви в ізраїльтян було колись у Массифі. | Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together, and came to Maspha, over against Jerusalem; for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel. |

| І постились у цей день, і поклали на себе веретища і попіл на голови свої, і роздерли одяг свій, | Then they fasted that day, and put on sackcloth, and cast ashes upon their heads, and rent their clothes, |
|

|
| розкрили книгу закону з тих, які язичники розшукували, щоб зробити на них зображення своїх ідолів, | and laid open the book of the law, wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images. |
|
49
|
49
|
| і принесли священичі облачення і первородних і десятини; і скликали назореїв, які сповнили дні свої, | They brought also the priest's garments, and the firstfruits, and the tithes: and the Nazarites they stirred up, who had accomplished their days. |
|

|
50
|
| і голосно заволали до неба: що нам робити с ними і куди відвести їх? | Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven, saying, What shall we do with these, and whither shall we carry them away? |
|

|
51
|
| Святилище Твоє потоптане й осквернене, і священики Твої у скорботі і приниженні. | For thy sanctuary is trodden down and profaned, and thy priests are in heaviness, and brought low. |
|
52
|
52
|
| І ось, зібралися проти нас язичники, щоб знищити нас. Ти знаєш, що замишляють вони проти нас. | And, lo, the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us: what things they imagine against us, thou knowest. |
|

|

|
| Як можемо ми устояти перед лицем їх, якщо Ти не допоможеш нам? | How shall we be able to stand against them, except thou, O God, be our help? |
|

|
54
|
| І засурмили трубами і викликнули гучним голосом. | Then sounded they with trumpets, and cried with a loud voice. |
|
55
|
55
|
| Після цього Іуда поставив вождів для народу — тисячоначальників, стоначальників, п’ятдесятиначальників і десятиначальників. | And after this Judas ordained captains over the people, even captains over thousands, and over hundreds, and over fifties, and over tens. |
|

|
| І сказали тим, які будували доми, заручилися з дружинами, насадили виноградники, і людям боязким, щоб кожен з них, за законом, повернувся у свій дім. | But as for such as were building houses, or had betrothed wives, or were planting vineyards, or were fearful, those he commanded that they should return, every man to his own house, according to the law. |

| Тоді рушило ополчення і розташувалося станом на півдні від Еммаума. | So the camp removed, and pitched upon the south side of Emmaus. |
|

|
| І сказав Іуда: підпережіться і будьте мужні і готові на ранок битися з цими язичниками, які зібралися проти нас, щоб погубити нас і святиню нашу. | And Judas said, Arm yourselves, and be valiant men, and see that ye be in readiness against the morning, that ye may fight with these nations, that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary: |

| Бо краще нам померти у битві, ніж бачити біди нашого народу і святині. | for it is better for us to die in battle, than to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary. |
|

|

|
| А яка буде воля на небі, так нехай сотворить! | Nevertheless, as the will of God is in heaven, so let him do. |
|
Глава 4
|
Chapter 4
|
|
1
|
1
|
| І взяв Горгій п’ять тисяч мужів і тисячу добірних вершників, і рушило ополчення вночі, | Then took Gorgias five thousand footmen, and a thousand of the best horsemen, and removed out of the camp by night; |
|
2
|
2
|
| щоб напасти на ополчення юдеїв і уразити їх раптово, а ті, що жили у фортеці, служили йому провідниками. | to the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews, and smite them suddenly. And the men of the fortress were his guides. |
|
3
|
3
|
| І почув Іуда і виступив сам і хоробрі мужи, щоб уразити військо царя в Еммаумі, | Now when Judas heard thereof, he himself removed, and the valiant men with him, that he might smite the king's army which was at Emmaus, |

|
| доки сили ворожі були ще на відстані від стану. | while as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp. |
|

|
5
|
| І прийшов Горгій у стан Іуди вночі, і нікого не знайшов, і шукав їх по горах, бо говорив: вони біжать від нас. | In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas: and when he found no man there, he sought them in the mountains: for he said, These fellows flee from us. |
|

| Але удосвіта Іуда з’явився на рівнині з трьома тисячами мужів, та вони не мали ні щитів, ні мечів, як того бажали. | But as soon as it was day, Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men, who nevertheless had neither armour nor swords to their minds. |
|

|
7
|
| Коли побачили вони міцне й озброєне ополчення язичників і кінноту, яка оточувала його, навчених для війни, | And they saw the camp of the heathen, that it was strong and well harnessed, and compassed round about with horsemen; and these were expert of war. |

|

|
| Іуда сказав мужам, що були з ним: не бійтеся кількости їх і не страшіться нападу їх. | Then said Judas to the men that were with him, Fear ye not their multitude, neither be ye afraid of their assault. |
|

|

|
| Згадайте, як спасені були батьки наші у Червоному морі, коли фараон переслідував їх з військом. | Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea, when Pharaoh pursued them with an army. |
|

|

|
| І нині заволаємо до неба; можливо, Він змилосердиться над нами, згадавши завіт з батьками нашими, і знищить нині це ополчення перед лицем нашим; | Now therefore let us cry unto heaven, if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us, and remember the covenant of our fathers, and destroy this host before our face this day: |

| і всі язичники пізнають, що є Визволитель і Спаситель Ізраїля. | that so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel. |
|

|

|
| Іноплемінники, звівши очі свої, побачили, що йдуть проти них, | Then the strangers lifted up their eyes, and saw them coming over against them. |
|
13
|
13
|
| і вийшли зі стану на битву, а ті, що були з Іудою, засурмили, | Wherefore they went out of the camp to battle; but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets. |
|
14
|
14
|
| і зійшлися, і розбиті були язичники, і побігли на рівнину, | So they joined battle, and the heathen being discomfited, fled into the plain. |
|
15
|
15
|
| а всі інші впали від меча; і переслідували їх до Газера і до рівнин Ідумеї, Азота й Іамнії, і впало з них до трьох тисяч мужів. | Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword: for they pursued them unto Gazera, and unto the plains of Idumea, and Azotus, and Jamnia, so that there were slain of them as many as three thousand men. |

| І повернувся Іуда і військо його від переслідування їх | This done, Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them, |

| і сказав народу: не кидайтеся на здобич, бо війна ще чекає на нас; | and said to the people, Be not greedy of the spoils, inasmuch as there is a battle before us, |
|
18
|
18
|
| Горгій і військо його на горі поблизу від нас; станьте тепер проти ворогів наших і бийтеся з ними, а після сміливо візьмете здобич. | and Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain: but stand ye now against our enemies, and overcome them, and after this ye may boldly take the spoils. |

|
| Коли ще говорив це Іуда, показався якийсь натовп, який виступав з гори. | As Judas was yet speaking these words, there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain: |
|

|
| І побачив він, що їх змусили втікати, і палять табір; бо дим, який піднімався, показував, що́ відбулося. | who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight, and were burning the tents; for the smoke that was seen declared what was done: |

|
| Коли вони побачили це, дуже злякалися; побачивши ж і військо Іуди на рівнині, готове до битви, | when therefore they perceived these things, they were sore afraid, and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight, |

| всі побігли у землю іноплемінників. | they fled every one into the land of strangers. |

| Тоді Іуда повернув на здобич стану, і захопив багато золота і срібла, гіацинтових і багряних одеж, і велике багатство. | Then Judas returned to spoil the tents, where they got much gold, and silver, and blue silk, and purple of the sea, and great riches. |
|

|
| І, повертаючись, оспівували і благословляли Господа небесного, бо Він благий і повіки милість Його. | After this they went home, and sung a song of thanksgiving, and praised the Lord in heaven: because it is good, because his mercy endureth for ever. |
|

|
| І було у той день велике спасіння Ізраїлю. | Thus Israel had a great deliverance that day. |
|

|

|
| Уцілілі ж іноплемінники прийшли до Лісія і сповістили про все, що трапилося. | Now all the strangers that had escaped came and told Lysias what had happened: |

|
| Він, почувши, засумував і засмутився, що не те трапилося з Ізраїлем, чого він хотів, і не те вийшло, що́ повелів йому цар. | who, when he heard thereof, was confounded and discouraged, because neither such things as he would were done unto Israel, nor such things as the king commanded him were come to pass. |

| І на наступний рік Лісій зібрав шістдесят тисяч добірних мужів і п’ять тисяч вершників, щоб перемогти їх. | In the following year therefore, Lysias gathered together threescore thousand choice men of foot, and five thousand horsemen, that he might subdue them. |

|
| І прийшли вони в Ідумею і розташувалися станом у Вефсурах; а Іуда зустрів їх з десятьма тисячами мужів. | So they came into Idumea, and pitched their tents at Bethsura, and Judas met them with ten thousand men. |
|

|
| Побачивши сильне ополчення, він молився і говорив: благословенний Ти, Спасителю Ізраїля, що скрушив напад сильного рукою раба Твого Давида і віддав поЛк. іноплемінників у руки Іонафана, сина Саулового, і зброєносця його. | And when he saw that mighty army, he prayed and said, Blessed art thou, O Saviour of Israel, who didst quell the violence of the mighty man by the hand of thy servant David, and gavest the host of strangers into the hands of Jonathan the son of Saul, and his armour-bearer; |

| Віддай військо це у руки народу Твого — Ізраїля, і нехай будуть вони посоромлені у силі і кінноті їх; | shut up this army in the hand of thy people Israel, and let them be confounded in their power and horsemen: |
|

|
| наведи на них страх і знищи зухвалість сили їх; нехай будуть вони приголомшені поразкою своєю; | make them to be of no courage, and cause the boldness of their strength to fall away, and let them quake at their destruction: |
|

|

|
| подолай їх мечем тих, що люблять Тебе, і нехай прославлять Тебе у піснях усі, хто знає ім’я Твоє. | cast them down with the sword of them that love thee, and let all those that know thy name praise thee with thanksgiving. |
|

| І билися вони, й упало з війська Лісія до п’яти тисяч мужів, упали перед ними. | So they joined battle; and there were slain of the host of Lysias about five thousand men, even before them were they slain. |
|

|
35
|
| Лісій, побачивши втечу війська свого і хоробрість воїнів Іуди, і що вони готові або жити, або померти відважно, вирушив до Антиохії, набрав чужоземців і, збільшивши попереднє військо, думав знову йти в Юдею. | Now when Lysias saw his army put to flight, and the manliness of Judas' soldiers, and how they were ready either to live or die valiantly, he went into Antiochia, and gathered together a company of strangers, and having made his army greater than it was, he purposed to come again into Judea. |

| Іуда ж і брати його сказали: ось, вороги наші знищені, зійдімо, щоб очистити й оновити святилище. | Then said Judas and his brethren, Behold, our enemies are discomfited: let us go up to cleanse and dedicate the sanctuary. |
|

|
| І зібралося все ополчення і зійшли на гору Сион. | Upon this all the host assembled themselves together, and went up into mount Sion. |
|

|
38
|
| І побачили, що святилище спустошене, жертовник осквернений, ворота спалені, і в притворах, як у лісі або на якій-небудь горі, повиростали рослини, і сховища зруйновані, | And when they saw the sanctuary desolate, and the altar profaned, and the gates burned up, and shrubs growing in the courts as in a forest, or in one of the mountains, yea, and the priests' chambers pulled down; |

|
| і роздерли вони одяг свій, плакали гірким плачем і сипали попіл на свої голови, | they rent their clothes, and made great lamentation, and cast ashes upon their heads, |
|

|

|
| і падали лицем на землю і сурмили вістовими трубами, і волали до неба. | and fell down flat to the ground upon their faces, and blew an alarm with the trumpets, and cried toward heaven. |
|

|
41
|
| Тоді відрядив Іуда мужів воювати проти тих, що знаходились у фортеці, доки він очистить святилище. | Then Judas appointed certain men to fight against those that were in the fortress, until he had cleansed the sanctuary. |
|
42
|
42
|
| І обрав священиків безвадних, ревнителів закону. | So he chose priests of blameless conversation, such as had pleasure in the law: |
|

|
43
|
| Вони очистили святилище й осквернені камені винесли у нечисте місце. | who cleansed the sanctuary, and bare out the defiled stones into an unclean place. |
|
44
|
44
|
| Потім вони розмірковували над оскверненим жертовником всепалення, як учинити з ним. | And when as they consulted what to do with the altar of burnt offerings, which was profaned; |
|

|
45
|
| І прийшла їм добра думка зруйнувати його, щоб він коли-небудь не послужив їм на ганьбу, оскільки язичники осквернили його; і зруйнували вони жертовник, | they thought it best to pull it down, lest it should be a reproach to them, because the heathen had defiled it: wherefore they pulled it down, |

| і камені склали на горі храму у пристойному місці, поки прийде пророк і дасть відповідь про них. | and laid up the stones in the mountain of the temple in a convenient place, until there should come a prophet to shew what should be done with them. |
|

|

|
| Узяли камені цілі, за законом, і побудували новий жертовник, як і раніше; | Then they took whole stones according to the law, and built a new altar according to the former; |
|

|
48
|
| потім побудували святині і внутрішні частини храму й освятили притвори; | and made up the sanctuary, and the things that were within the temple, and hallowed the courts. |
|

|
49
|
| влаштували нове священне начиння і внесли у храм свічник і вівтар всепалень і фіміам і трапезу; | They made also new holy vessels, and into the temple they brought the candlestick, and the altar of incense, and the table. |
|
50
|
50
|
| і закурили на вівтарі фіміам і запалили світильники на свічнику, й освітили храм; | And upon the altar they burned incense, and the lamps that were upon the candlestick they lighted, that they might give light in the temple. |
|

|
51
|
| і поклали на трапезу хліби, і розвісили завіси, і закінчили всі діла, які почали. | Furthermore they set the loaves upon the table, and spread out the veils, and finished all the works which they had begun to make. |
|

|

|
| У двадцять п’ятий день дев’ятого місяця — це місяць Хаслев — сто сорок восьмого року, встали дуже рано | Now on the five and twentieth day of the ninth month, which is called the month Casleu, in the hundred forty and eighth year, they rose up betimes in the morning, |
|

|

|
| і принесли жертву за законом на новозбудованому жертовнику всепалень. | and offered sacrifice according to the law upon the new altar of burnt offerings, which they had made. |
|

|
54
|
| У той час, у той самий день, в який язичники осквернили жертовник, оновлений він з піснями, з цитрами, гуслями і кимвалами. | At what time and day the heathen had profaned it, even in that was it dedicated with songs, and citherns, and harps, and cymbals. |
|

|
55
|
| І весь народ падав на лице своє, і молилися і возносили подяки до неба Благопоспішнику своєму. | Then all the people fell upon their faces, worshipping and praising the God of heaven, who had given them good success. |
|

|
56
|
| Так звершували відновлення жертовника вісім днів з веселощами, приносячи всепалення і підносячи жертву спасіння і хвали. | And so they kept the dedication of the altar eight days, and offered burnt offerings with gladness, and sacrificed the sacrifice of deliverance and praise. |
|

|

|
| І прикрасили передню сторону храму золотими вінцями і щитами і відновили ворота і сховища, і зробили для них двері. | They decked also the forefront of the temple with crowns of gold and with shields; and the gates and the chambers they renewed, and hanged doors upon them. |
|

|
| І була дуже велика радість у народі, і відвернули ганьбу язичників. | Thus was there very great gladness among the people, for that the reproach of the heathen was put away. |
|

|

|
| І встановили Іуда і брати його і все зібрання Ізраїля, щоб дні відновлення жертовника святкувалися з веселощами і радістю у свій час, щороку вісім днів, від двадцятого дня місяця Хаслева. | Moreover Judas and his brethren with the whole congregation of Israel ordained, that the days of the dedication of the altar should be kept in their season from year to year by the space of eight days, from the five and twentieth day of the month Casleu, with mirth and gladness. |

| У той же час оббудували гору Сион навколо високими стінами і міцними вежами, щоб язичники, прийшовши коли-небудь, не потоптали їх, як зробили це раніше. | At that time also they builded up the mount Sion with high walls and strong towers round about, lest the Gentiles should come and tread it down, as they had done before. |

| І розташував там Іуда військо стерегти гору, і зміцнили для охорони її Вефсуру, щоб народ мав укріплення проти Ідумеї. | And they set there a garrison to keep it, and fortified Bethsura to preserve it; that the people might have a defence against Idumea. |

| Коли навколишні народи почули, що побудовано жертовник і відновлено святилище, як раніше, дуже обурилися; | Now when the nations round about heard that the altar was built, and the sanctuary renewed as before, it displeased them very much. |
|

|

|
| і наважилися знищити рід Якова, який жив серед них, і почали убивати і знищувати людей у цьому народі. | Wherefore they thought to destroy the generation of Jacob that was among them, and thereupon they began to slay and destroy the people. |
|

|
3
|
| Тоді Іуда ополчився проти синів Ісава в Ідумеї, в Акравимі, оскільки вони тримали в облозі Ізраїля, й уразив їх великим ураженням, і упокорив їх, і взяв здобич їх. | Then Judas fought against the children of Esau in Idumea at Acrabattine, because they besieged Israel: and he gave them a great overthrow, and abated their courage, and took their spoils. |

| Згадав він і про злобу синів Веана, які були для народу сіткою і спотиканням, влаштовуючи йому засідки на дорогах. | Also he remembered the injury of the children of Bæan, who had been a snare and an offence unto the people, in that they lay in wait for them in the ways. |
|

|
| Хоч вони замкнулися від нього у вежах, але він ополчився проти них, піддав їх закляттю і спалив вогнем вежі їхні з усіма, хто був у них. | He shut them up therefore in the towers, and encamped against them, and destroyed them utterly, and burned the towers of that place with fire, and all that were therein. |

| Потім він перейшов до синів Аммона і зустрів сильне військо і численний народ і Тимофія, провідника їхнього. | Afterward he passed over to the children of Ammon, where he found a mighty power, and much people, with Timotheus their captain. |
|

|
| Він мав з ними багато битв, і вони були розбиті перед лицем його; він уразив їх; | So he fought many battles with them, till at length they were discomfited before him; and he smote them. |
|

|

|
| узяв Іазер і селища його і повернувся в Юдею. | And when he had taken Jazer, with the towns belonging thereto, he returned into Judea. |
|

|
9
|
| Тоді зібралися язичники, які жили у Галааді, проти ізраїльтян, що знаходилися в краях їхніх, щоб знищити їх; але вони втекли у фортецю Дафему. | Then the heathen that were at Galaad assembled themselves together against the Israelites that were in their quarters, to destroy them: but they fled to the fortress of Dathema, |

| І послали листи до Іуди і братів його і сказали: зібралися проти нас навколишні язичники, щоб знищити нас, | and sent letters unto Judas and his brethren, saying, The heathen that are round about us are assembled together against us to destroy us: |

| і готуються йти і зробити напад на фортецю, в яку ми втекли, і Тимофій на чолі війська їхнього. | and they are preparing to come and take the fortress where unto we are fled, Timotheus being captain of their host. |
|

|

|
| Отже, прийди і визволи нас від руки їх, тому що багато з нас загинули; | Come now therefore, and deliver us from their hands, for many of us are slain: |
|

|
13
|
| і всі брати наші, які були у межах Това, віддані на смерть, а дружин їхніх і дітей їхніх і майно взяли у полон, і погубили там близько тисячі мужів. | yea, all our brethren that were in the places of Tobie are put to death: their wives and their children also they have carried away captives, and borne away their stuff; and they have destroyed there about a thousand men. |

| Ще читалися ці листи, як ось, прийшли інші вісники з Галилеї у розідраному одязі з таким повідомленням: | While these letters were yet being read, behold, there came other messengers from Galilee with their clothes rent, who reported on this wise, |

|
| зібралися проти нас із Птолемаїди і з Тира і Сидона, і з усієї Галилеї язичницької, щоб погубити нас. | saying that they of Ptolemais, and of Tyrus, and Sidon, and all Galilee of the Gentiles, were assembled together against them to consume us. |
|

|
16
|
| Коли почули ці слова Іуда і народ, то зібралися великі збори для наради, що зробити для цих братів, які знаходяться у біді і яким загрожує війна від тих язичників? | Now when Judas and the people heard these words, there assembled a great congregation together, to consult what they should do for their brethren, that were in trouble, and assaulted of them. |

| Тоді Іуда сказав Симону, братові своєму: вибери собі мужів і йди і захисти братів твоїх, які знаходяться у Галилеї; а я та Іонафан, брат мій, підемо у Галаад. | Then said Judas unto Simon his brother, Choose thee out men, and go and deliver thy brethren that are in Galilee, for I and Jonathan my brother will go into the country of Galaad. |

| І залишив він Йосифа, сина Захарії, та Азарію начальниками над народом із залишком війська в Юдеї для охорони. | So he left Joseph the son of Zacharias, and Azarias, captains of the people, with the remnant of the host in Judea to keep it. |
|

|
| І дав їм повеління, сказавши: управляйте народом цим, але не починайте війни проти язичників до нашого повернення. | Unto whom he gave commandment, saying, Take ye the charge of this people, and see that ye make not war against the heathen until the time that we come again. |
|

|

|
| Симону виділені для походу у Галилею три тисячі мужів, Іуді ж — у Галаад вісім тисяч мужів. | Now unto Simon were given three thousand men to go into Galilee, and unto Judas eight thousand men for the country of Galaad. |
|

|
| І вирушив Симон у Галилею і провів багато битв з язичниками, і розбив язичників. | Then went Simon into Galilee, where he fought many battles with the heathen, so that the heathen were discomfited by him. |
|

|
22
|
| Він переслідував їх до воріт Птолемаїди, і впало з язичників до трьох тисяч чоловіків, і він узяв здобич їхню. | And he pursued them unto the gate of Ptolemais; and there were slain of the heathen about three thousand men, whose spoils he took. |
|

|

|
| Також узяв він із собою [юдеїв], які знаходилися у Галилеї й Арваттах, з дружинами і дітьми і з усім майном їхнім, і привів у Юдею з великою радістю. | And those that were in Galilee, and in Arbattis, with their wives and their children, and all that they had, took he away with him, and brought them into Judea with great joy. |

| А Іуда Маккавей та Іонафан, брат його, перейшли Йордан і звершили триденну путь у пустелі. | Judas Maccabeus also and his brother Jonathan went over Jordan, and travelled three days' journey in the wilderness, |

| Їх зустріли навуфеї і прийняли мирно, і розповіли їм усе, що сталося з братами їхніми у Галааді, | where they met with the Nabathites, who came unto them in a peaceable manner, and told them every thing that had happened to their brethren in the land of Galaad: |

| і що багато з них замкнені у Васарі й Восорі, в Алемах, Хасфорі, Македі і Карнаїні — усі ці міста укріплені і великі — | and how that many of them were shut up in Bosora, and Bosor, and Alema, Casphor, Maked, and Carnaim; all these cities are strong and great: |

| і в інших містах Галаада знаходяться в облозі, і що завтра призначено напасти на ці укріплення і взяти їх і погубити всіх їх в один день. | and that they were shut up in the rest of the cities of the country of Galaad, and that against to morrow they had appointed to bring their host against the forts, and to take them, and to destroy them all in one day. |

| Тому Іуда зі своїм військом несподівано направив шлях свій у пустелю до Восора і взяв це місто, і вибив усю чоловічу стать вістрям меча, і взяв усю здобич їхню, і спалив його вогнем; | Hereupon Judas and his host turned suddenly by the way of the wilderness unto Bosora; and when he had won the city, he slew all the males with the edge of the sword, and took all their spoils, and burned the city with fire. |

| а звідти вирушив уночі і йшов до укріплення. | From whence he removed by night, and went till he came to the fortress. |
|

|

|
| Коли наставав ранок, і звели очі, і ось, народ численний, якому числа не було, піднімають драбини і машини, щоб узяти укріплення, і облягають тих, що у ньому. | And betimes in the morning they looked up, and, behold, there was an innumerable people bearing ladders and other engines of war, to take the fortress: for they assaulted them. |

| Побачив Іуда, що почалася битва і волання міста піднімалося до неба трубами і гучним криком, | When Judas therefore saw that the battle was begun, and that the cry of the city went up to heaven, with trumpets, and a great sound, |

| і сказав воїнам: бийтеся тепер за братів ваших. | he said unto his host, Fight this day for your brethren. |
|

|

|
| Він обійшов ворогів з тилу з трьома загонами, і засурмили трубами і викликнули з молитвою; | So he went forth behind them in three companies, who sounded their trumpets, and cried with prayer. |
|

|
34
|
| і дізналося військо Тимофія, що це — Маккавей, і побігли від лиця його, і він уразив їх великою поразкою, і впало їх у цей день до восьми тисяч чоловіків. | Then the host of Timotheus, knowing that it was Maccabeus, fled from him: wherefore he smote them with a great slaughter; so that there were killed of them that day about eight thousand men. |

| Тоді повернув він у Масфу й обложив і взяв її, вибив усю чоловічу стать у ній, узяв здобич її і спалив її вогнем; | This done, Judas turned aside to Maspha; and after he had assaulted it, he took it, and slew all the males therein, and received the spoils thereof, and burnt it with fire. |

| вирушивши звідти, він узяв Хасфон, Макед, Восор та інші міста галаадські. | From thence went he, and took Casphon, Maged, Bosor, and the other cities of the country of Galaad. |
|

|
| Після цих подій Тимофій зібрав інше військо і розташувався станом перед Рафоном по той бік потоку. | After these things gathered Timotheus another host, and encamped against Raphon beyond the brook. |
|

|

|
| І послав Іуда оглянути військо, й оголосили йому і сказали: зібралися до них усі навколишні язичники — сила численна, | So Judas sent men to espy the host, who brought him word, saying, All the heathen that be round about us are assembled unto them, even a very great host. |
|

|
39
|
| і вони найняли на допомогу собі аравитян і розташувалися станом за потоком, будучи готові йти проти тебе війною. І пішов Іуда назустріч їм. | He hath also hired the Arabians to help them, and they have pitched their tents beyond the brook, ready to come and fight against thee. Upon this Judas went to meet them. |

| Тоді Тимофій сказав своїм воєначальникам, коли Іуда і військо його наближалися до потоку води: якщо він перейде до нас раніше, то ми не в силах будемо устояти проти нього, бо він переможе нас. | Then Timotheus said unto the captains of his host, When Judas and his host come near the brook, if he pass over first unto us, we shall not be able to withstand him; for he will mightily prevail against us: |

| Якщо ж він убоїться і розташується станом по той бік потоку, то ми перейдемо до нього і переможемо його. | but if he be afraid, and camp beyond the river, we shall go over unto him, and prevail against him. |
|

|

|
| Як тільки підійшов Іуда до потоку води, то поставив при потоці народних писарів і наказав їм, сказавши: не залишайте жодної людини у стані, але нехай усі йдуть на битву. | Now when Judas came near the brook, he caused the scribes of the people to remain by the brook: unto whom he gave commandment, saying, Suffer no man to remain in the camp, but let all come to the battle. |

| І переправився до них перший і весь народ за ним. І знищені були перед лицем його всі язичники, і кинули зброю свою, і втекли у капище, яке було у Карнаїні. | So he went first over unto them, and all the people after him: then all the heathen, being discomfited before him, cast away their weapons, and fled unto the temple that was at Carnaim. |

| Тоді взяли вони це місто і спалили вогнем капище з усіма, що знаходилися у ньому; і переможений був Карнаїн, і не міг більше протистояти Іуді. | But they took the city, and burned the temple with all that were therein. Thus was Carnaim subdued, neither could they stand any longer before Judas. |
|

| І зібрав Іуда всіх ізраїльтян, що знаходилися у Галааді, від малого до великого, і дружин їхніх, і дітей їхніх, і майно, дуже велике ополчення, щоб іти у землю Юдейську. | Then Judas gathered together all the Israelites that were in the country of Galaad, from the least unto the greatest, even their wives, and their children, and their stuff, a very great host, to the end they might come into the land of Judea. |

| І дійшли вони до Ефрона. Це було велике місто, дуже укріплене, на шляху; неможливо було ухилитися від нього ні праворуч, ні ліворуч; потрібно було пройти через нього, | Now when they came unto Ephron (this was a great city in the way as they should go, very well fortified) they could not turn from it, either on the right hand or the left, but must needs pass through the midst of it. |

| а жителі замкнулися у ньому і ворота завалили каменями. | Then they of the city shut them out, and stopped up the gates with stones. |
|

|
| Іуда послав до них з мирною пропозицією: ми пройдемо через землю вашу, щоб іти нам у землю нашу, і ніхто не скривдить вас, тільки ногами нашими пройдемо. Але вони не захотіли відчинити йому. | Whereupon Judas sent unto them in peaceable manner, saying, Let us pass through your land to go into our own country, and none shall do you any hurt; we will only pass through on foot: howbeit they would not open unto him. |

| Тоді Іуда наказав оголосити в ополченні, щоб кожен озброївся на своєму місці; | Wherefore Judas commanded a proclamation to be made throughout the host, that every man should pitch his tent in the place where he was. |

| і озброїлися воїни й облягали місто весь той день і всю ніч, і здалося місто у руки його. | So the soldiers pitched, and assaulted the city all that day and all that night, till at the length the city was delivered into his hands: |
|

|
| І вибив він усю чоловічу стать вістрям меча і до основ зруйнував місто, й узяв здобич його, і пройшов через місто по вбитих. | who then slew all the males with the edge of the sword, and rased the city, and took the spoils thereof, and passed through the city over them that were slain. |
|

|
| І переправилися через Йордан на велику рівнину навпроти Вефсана. | After this went they over Jordan into the great plain before Bethsan. |
|

|

|
| І збирав Іуда тих, що залишилися, і підбадьорював народ упродовж усього шляху, доки не прийшли у землю Юдейську. | And Judas gathered together those that came behind, and exhorted the people all the way through, till they came into the land of Judea. |
|

|
| І зійшли на гору Сион з веселощами і радістю і принесли всепалення, тому що ніхто не упав з них до самого повернення у мирі. | So they went up to mount Sion with joy and gladness, where they offered burnt offerings, because not one of them was slain until they had returned in peace. |
|

| почули Йосиф, син Захарії, та Азарій, воєначальники, про славні воїнські подвиги, звершені ними, | Joseph the son of Zacharias, and Azarias, captains of the garrisons, heard of the valiant acts and warlike deeds which they had done. |

| і сказали: зробимо і ми собі ім’я; підемо воювати з язичниками, які оточують нас. | Wherefore they said, Let us also get us a name, and go fight against the heathen that are round about us. |
|

|
| Так оголосили вони війську, яке було при них, і пішли на Іамнію. | So when they had given charge unto the garrison that was with them, they went toward Jamnia. |
|

|
| І вийшов Горгій з міста і воїни його назустріч їм на битву. | Then came Gorgias and his men out of the city to fight against them. |
|

|
60
|
| І, кинувшись навтіки, Йосиф та Азарія були переслідувані до меж Юдеї; і впало у цей день з народу ізраїльського до двох тисяч чоловіків. | And so it was, that Joseph and Azarias were put to flight, and pursued unto the borders of Judea: and there were slain that day of the people of Israel about two thousand men. |

| І було велике сум’яття у народі ізраїльському, тому що не послухалися Іуди і братів його, мріючи показати хоробрість, | Thus was there a great overthrow among the children of Israel, because they were not obedient unto Judas and his brethren, but thought to do some valiant act. |

| тоді як вони не були від сімені тих мужів, руці яких надано спасіння Ізраїля. | Moreover these men came not of the seed of those, by whose hand deliverance was given unto Israel. |
|

|
| Але муж Іуда і брати його дуже прославилися перед усім Ізраїлем і перед усіма народами, де тільки чути було ім’я їх, — | Howbeit the man Judas and his brethren were greatly renowned in the sight of all Israel, and of all the heathen, wheresoever their name was heard of: |

| і збиралися до них ті, що прийшли привітати. | insomuch as the people assembled unto them with joyful acclamations. |
|

|
| Після того вийшли Іуда і брати його і воювали проти синів Ісава у землі, яка лежить на південь, і уразив Хеврон і селища його, і зруйнував укріплення його, і спалив вежі його навколо нього, | Afterward went Judas forth with his brethren, and fought against the children of Esau in the land toward the south, where he smote Hebron, and the towns thereof, and pulled down the fortress of it, and burned the towers thereof round about. |

| і піднявся, щоб іти у землю іноплемінників, і пройшов Самарію. | From thence he removed to go into the land of the Philistines, and passed through Samaria. |

| У той час упали у битві священики, які бажали прославитися хоробрістю і безрозсудно вийшли на війну. | At that time certain priests, desirous to shew their valour, were slain in battle, for that they went out to fight unadvisedly. |
|

|
| І повернув Іуда на Азот, землю іноплемінників, зруйнував жертовники їхні, спалив вогнем різьблені зображення богів їхніх, узяв здобич міст і повернувся у землю Юдейську. | So Judas turned to Azotus in the land of the Philistines, and when he had pulled down their altars, and burned their carved images with fire, and spoiled their cities, he returned into the land of Judea. |

| Тим часом цар Антиох, проходячи верхні області, почув, що є у Персії місто Елимаїс, який славиться багатством, сріблом і золотом, | About that time king Antiochus travelling through the high countries heard say, that Elymais in the country of Persia was a city greatly renowned for riches, silver, and gold; |

| і в ньому — храм, дуже багатий, і є там золоті покрови, броня і зброя, які залишив там Олександр, син Филипа, цар Македонський, — перший, який став царем над еллінами. | and that there was in it a very rich temple, wherein were coverings of gold, and breastplates, and shields, which Alexander, son of Philip, the Macedonian king, who reigned first among the Grecians, had left there: |

| І він прийшов і намагався взяти це місто і пограбувати його, але не міг, тому що намір його став відомим жителям міста. | wherefore he came and sought to take the city, and to spoil it; but he was not able, because they of the city, having had warning thereof, |

| Тоді прийшов хтось до нього у Персію зі звісткою, що ополчення, які ходили у землю Іуди, втікають, | Moreover there came one who brought him tidings into Persia, that the armies, which went against the land of Judea, were put to flight: |

| що Лісій ходив із сильним військом попереду всіх, але був уражений юдеями, і вони підсилилися і зброєю, і військом, і багатою здобиччю, яку взяли від уражених ними військ, | and that Lysias, who went forth first with a great power, was driven away of the Jews; and that they were made strong by the armour, and power, and store of spoils, which they had gotten of the armies, whom they had destroyed: |

| і що вони зруйнували мерзоти, які він спорудив над жертовником у Єрусалимі, а святилище, як і раніше, обнесли високими стінами, також і Вефсуру, місто його. | also that they had pulled down the abomination, which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem, and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls, as before, and his city Bethsura. |

| Коли цар почув слова ці, сильно злякався і стривожився, упав на постіль і занеміг від суму, що не збулося так, як він бажав. | Now when the king heard these words, he was astonished and sore moved: whereupon he laid him down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not befallen him as he looked for. |

| І багато днів пробув він там, тому що відновлювався у ньому сильний сум; він думав, що помирає. | And there he continued many days: for his grief was ever more and more, and he made account that he should die. |

| І скликав він усіх друзів своїх і сказав їм: відійшов сон від очей моїх, і я занеміг серцем від суму. | Wherefore he called for all his friends, and said unto them, The sleep is gone from mine eyes, and my heart faileth for very care. |
|

|
| І сказав я у серці своєму: до якої скорботи дійшов я і до якого великого знічення, в якому знаходжуся тепер! А був я корисним і любленим у володінні моєму. | And I thought with myself, Into what tribulation am I come, and how great a flood of misery is it wherein now I am! for I was bountiful and beloved in my power. |

| Тепер же я згадую про ті злодіяння, які я звершив у Єрусалимі, і як узяв усі золоті і срібні сосуди, які знаходилися у ньому, і посилав знищувати тих, що живуть в Юдеї, даремно. | But now I remember the evils that I did at Jerusalem, and that I took all the vessels of gold and silver that were therein, and sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judea without a cause. |

|
| Тепер я знаю, що за це спіткали мене ці біди, — і ось, я гину від великого суму у чужій землі. | I perceive therefore that for this cause these troubles are come upon me, and, behold, I perish through great grief in a strange land. |
|

|
| І прикликав він Филипа, одного з друзів своїх, і поставив його правителем над усім царством своїм; | Then called he for Philip, one of his friends, whom he made ruler over all his realm. |
|

|
15
|
| і дав йому вінець і царський одяг свій і перстень, щоб він керував Антиохом, сином його, і виховував його для царювання. | And gave him the crown, and his robe, and his signet, to the end he should bring up his son Antiochus, and nourish him up for the kingdom. |
|

|
16
|
| І помер цар Антиох у сто сорок дев’ятому році. | So king Antiochus died there in the hundred forty and ninth year. |
|

|
17
|
| Коли Лісій дізнався, що цар помер, то поставив замість нього на царство сина його, Антиоха, якого виховував у юності його, і назвав його ім’ям Евпатора. | Now when Lysias knew that the king was dead, he set up Antiochus his son, whom he had brought up being young, to reign in his stead, and his name he called Eupator. |

| Тим часом ті, що знаходились у фортеці, тіснили Ізраїля навколо святилища і завжди намагалися чинити йому зло, а язичникам служити опорою; | About this time they that were in the tower shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary, and sought always their hurt, and the strengthening of the heathen. |

| тоді Іуда вирішив вигнати їх і скликав весь народ, щоб обложити їх. | Wherefore Judas, purposing to destroy them, called all the people together to besiege them. |
|

|
20
|
| Усі зібралися й обложили їх у сто п’ятдесятому році, і спорудив він проти них стрілометальні знаряддя і машини. | So they came together, and besieged them in the hundred and fiftieth year, and he made mounts for shot against them, and other engines. |
|

|

|
| Але деякі з обложених вийшли, і до них пристали деякі з нечестивих ізраїльтян; | Howbeit certain of them that were besieged got forth, unto whom some ungodly men of Israel joined themselves: |
|
22
|
22
|
| і пішли вони до царя і сказали: доки ти не вчиниш суду і не помстишся за братів наших? | and they went unto the king, and said, How long will it be ere thou execute judgment, and avenge our brethren? |
|

|
23
|
| Ми погодилися служити батькові твоєму і ходити за заповідями його і додержуватися повелінь його; | We have been willing to serve thy father, and to do as he would have us, and to obey his commandments; |
|
24
|
24
|
| а сини народу нашого обложили укріплення і за те цураються нас, і кого з нас знаходять, умертвляють і майно наше розграбовують, | for which cause they of our nation besiege the tower, and are alienated from us: moreover as many of us as they could light on they slew, and spoiled our inheritance. |
|

|
25
|
| і не на нас тільки простягли вони руку, але і на всі наділи наші. | Neither have they stretched out their hand against us only, but also against all their borders. |
|

|
| І ось, тепер обложили вони укріплення у Єрусалимі, щоб оволодіти ним, а святилище і Вефсуру зміцнили. | And, behold, this day are they besieging the tower at Jerusalem, to take it: the sanctuary also and Bethsura have they fortified. |
|

|

|
| Якщо ти не поспішиш випередити їх, то вони зроблять більше цього, і тоді ти не в силах будеш утримати їх. | Wherefore if thou dost not prevent them quickly, they will do greater things than these, neither shalt thou be able to rule them. |
|

|
| Почувши це, цар розгнівався і зібрав усіх друзів своїх і начальників війська свого і начальників кінноти; | Now when the king heard this, he was angry, and gathered together all his friends, and the captains of his army, and those that had charge of the horse. |
|

|
| прийшли до нього і з інших царств і з морських островів війська наймані, | There came also unto him from other kingdoms, and from isles of the sea, bands of hired soldiers. |
|
30
|
30
|
| так що кількість військ його була: сто тисяч піших, двадцять тисяч вершників і тридцять два слони, привчених до війни. | So that the number of his army was an hundred thousand footmen, and twenty thousand horsemen, and two and thirty elephants exercised in battle. |
|

|
31
|
| І пройшли вони через Ідумею і розташувалися станом навпроти Вефсури, і воювали багато днів і спорудили машини; але ті зробили вилазку і спалили їх вогнем і билися мужньо. | These went through Idumea, and pitched against Bethsura, which they assaulted many days, making engines; but they of Bethsura came out, and burned them with fire, and fought valiantly. |

| Після цього Іуда відступив від фортеці і розташувався станом у Вефсахарі навпроти стану царського. | Upon this Judas removed from the tower, and pitched in Bethzacharias, over against the king's camp. |
|

|
| Цар же, вставши рано-вранці, поспішно вирушив з військом своїм по дорозі до Вефсахари, і приготувалися війська до битви і засурмили трубами. | Then the king rising very early marched fiercely with his host toward Bethzacharias, where his armies made them ready to battle, and sounded the trumpets. |
|

|
| Слонам показували кров винограду і шовковичних ягід, щоб збудити їх до битви, | And to the end they might provoke the elephants to fight, they shewed them the blood of grapes and mulberries. |
|

|
35
|
| і розділили цих тварин на загони і приставили до кожного слона по тисячі мужів у залізних кольчугах і з мідними шоломами на головах, зверх того по п’ятсот добірних вершників призначено було до кожного слона. | Moreover they divided the beasts among the armies, and for every elephant they appointed a thousand men, armed with coats of mail, and with helmets of brass on their heads; and beside this, for every beast were ordained five hundred horsemen of the best. |

| Вони ставали завчасно там, де був слон, і куди він ішов, ішли і вони разом, не відстаючи від нього. | These were ready at every occasion: wheresoever the beast was, and whithersoever the beast went, they went also, neither departed they from him. |

| Притому на них були міцні дерев’яні вежі, які покривали кожного слона, укріплені на них помочами, і в кожній з них по тридцять два сильних мужа, які воювали на них, і при слоні індієць його. | And upon the beasts were there strong towers of wood, which covered every one of them, and were girt fast unto them with devices: there were also upon every one two and thirty strong men, that fought upon them, beside the Indian that ruled him. |

| Інших же вершників розставили тут і там — на двох боках ополчення, щоб подавати знаки і підкріплювати у тісних місцях. | As for the remnant of the horsemen, they set them on this side and that side at the two parts of the host, giving them signs what to do, and being harnessed all over amidst the ranks. |
|

|
| Коли сонце блиснуло на золотих і мідних щитах, то заблищали від них гори і світилися, як вогненні світильники. | Now when the sun shone upon the shields of gold and brass, the mountains glistered therewith, and shined like lamps of fire. |
|
40
|
40
|
| Одна частина царського війська була розтягнута по високих горах, а інші — по низинних місцях; і йшли вони твердо і струнко. | So part of the king's army being spread upon the high mountains, and part on the valleys below, they marched on safely and in order. |
|

|

|
| І знітилися всі, які чули шум безлічі їх і ходу такого полчища і стукіт зброї, бо військо було дуже велике і сильне. | Wherefore all that heard the noise of their multitude, and the marching of the company, and the rattling of the harness, were moved: for the army was very great and mighty. |
|

|
42
|
| І вступив Іуда і військо його у битву, — й упали з ополчення царського шістсот мужів. | Then Judas and his host drew near, and entered into battle, and there were slain of the king's army six hundred men. |
|

|
43
|
| Тоді Єлеазар, син Саварана, побачив, що один зі слонів покритий бронею царською і перевершував усіх, і здавалося, що на ньому був цар, — | Eleazar also, surnamed Savaran, perceiving that one of the beasts, armed with royal harness, was higher than all the rest, and supposing that the king was upon him, |

| і він віддав себе, щоб врятувати народ свій і придбати собі вічне ім’я; | put himself in jeopardy, to the end he might deliver his people, and get him a perpetual name: |
|

|
| і сміливо побіг до нього на середину загону, вражаючи праворуч і ліворуч, і розступалися від нього і в той, і в інший бік; | wherefore he ran upon him courageously through the midst of the battle, slaying on the right hand and on the left, so that they were divided from him on both sides. |
|

|
| і підбіг він під того слона, ліг під нього й убив його, й упав на нього слон на землю, і він помер там. | Which done, he crept under the elephant, and thrust him under, and slew him: whereupon the elephant fell down upon him, and there he died. |
|

|
| Але, побачивши силу царського ополчення і стрімкість військ, юдеї ухилилися від них. | Howbeit the rest of the Jews seeing the strength of the king, and the violence of his forces, turned away from them. |
|

|
| Царські ж війська пішли проти них на Єрусалим: цар направив війська на Юдею і на гору Сион. | Then the king's army went up to Jerusalem to meet them, and the king pitched his tents against Judea, and against mount Sion. |
|

|

|
| І уклав він мир з тими, що були у Вефсурі, які вийшли з міста, бо не було у них продовольства, щоб триматися у ньому в облозі, тому що був суботній рік на землі. | But with them that were in Bethsura he made peace: for they came out of the city, because they had no victuals there to endure the siege, it being a year of rest to the land. |

| Й оволодів цар Вефсурою і залишив у ній сторожу, щоб стерегти її. | So the king took Bethsura, and set a garrison there to keep it. |
|

|

|
| Потім багато днів облягав святилище, і поставив там стрілометальні знаряддя і машини, і вогнеметальні, і каменеметальні і списометальні, щоб кидати стріли і каміння. | As for the sanctuary, he besieged it many days: and set there artillery with engines and instruments to cast fire and stones, and pieces to cast darts and slings. |

|
| Але й юдеї спорудили машини проти їхніх машин і воювали багато днів; | Whereupon they also made engines against their engines, and held them battle a long season. |
|

|

| Почув Лісій, що Филип, якому цар Антиох ще за життя доручив виховувати сина свого, Антиоха, для царювання, | At that time Lysias heard say, that Philip, whom Antiochus the king, whiles he lived, had appointed to bring up his son Antiochus, that he might be king, |

| повернувся з Персії і Мідії і з ним — війська, що ходили з царем, і що він домагається прийняти на себе діла царства. | was returned out of Persia and Media, and the king's host also that went with him, and that he sought to take unto him the ruling of affairs. |
|

| Тому поспішно пішов і сказав цареві, начальникам війська і вельможам: ми щодня терпимо нестачу і продовольства у нас мало, а місце, що обложене нами, — міцне, тим часом лежить на нас піклування про царство. | Wherefore he went in all haste, and said to the king and the captains of the host and the company, We decay daily, and our victuals are but small, and the place we lay siege unto is strong, and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us: |

| Отже, подамо правицю цим людям і укладемо з ними мир і з усім народом їхнім, | now therefore let us be friends with these men, and make peace with them, and with all their nation; |
|

|

|
| і дозволимо їм жити за законами їхніми, як колись; бо за свої закони, які ми скасували, вони роздратувалися і зробили все це. | and covenant with them, that they shall live after their laws, as they did before: for they are therefore displeased, and have done all these things, because we abolished their laws. |
|

|

|
| І угодне було це слово царю і начальникам, — і послав він до них, щоб укласти мир, що вони і прийняли; | So the king and the princes were content: wherefore he sent unto them to make peace; and they accepted thereof. |
|

|
| і клявся їм цар і начальники. Після цього вони вийшли з укріплення. | Also the king and the princes made an oath unto them: whereupon they went out of the strong hold. |
|

|

|
| І зійшов цар на гору Сион і, оглянувши укріплені місця, зневажив клятву, якою клявся, і повелів зруйнувати стіни навкруги. | Then the king entered into mount Sion: but when he saw the strength of the place, he brake his oath that he had made, and gave commandment to pull down the wall round about. |

| Потім поспішно вирушив і, повернувшись в Антиохію, він побачив, що Филип володіє містом, вступив з ним у битву і силою взяв місто. | Afterward departed he in all haste, and returned unto Antiochia, where he found Philip to be master of the city: so he fought against him, and took the city by force. |

| У сто п’ятдесят першому році вийшов з Рима Димитрій, син Селевка, і з небагатьма людьми ввійшов в одне приморське місто і там став царем. | In the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome, and came up with a few men unto a city of the sea coast, and reigned there. |

| Коли ж він входив у царський дім батьків своїх, військо схопило Антиоха і Лісія, щоб привести їх до нього. | And as he entered into the palace of his ancestors, so it was, that his forces had taken Antiochus and Lysias, to bring them unto him. |

|
| Це стало відомо йому, і він сказав: не показуйте мені облич їхніх. | Wherefore, when he knew it, he said, Let me not see their faces. |
|

|
| Тоді воїни вбили їх, і сів Димитрій на престолі царства свого. | So his host slew them. Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom, |

|
| І прийшли до нього всі мужі беззаконні і нечестиві з ізраїльтян, і Алким був на чолі їх, домагаючись священства; | there came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel, having Alcimus, who was desirous to be high priest, for their captain: |
|

|
| і звинувачували вони перед царем народ, говорячи: погубив Іуда і брати його друзів твоїх, і нас вигнали з землі нашої. | and they accused the people to the king, saying, Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends, and driven us out of our own land. |
|

|

|
| Отже, пошли тепер мужа, якому ти довіряєш; нехай він піде і побачить усе руйнування, яке вони заподіяли нам і країні царя, і нехай покарає їх і всіх, хто допомагає їм. | Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go and see what havock he hath made among us, and in the king's land, and let him punish them with all them that aid them. |

| Цар обрав Вакхида з друзів царських, який керував по той бік ріки, був великий у царстві і вірний цареві, | Then the king chose Bacchides, a friend of the king, who ruled beyond the river, and was a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king. |

| і послав його і нечестивого Алкима, надавши йому священство, і повелів йому вчинити помсту синам Ізраїля. | And him he sent with that wicked Alcimus, whom he made high priest, and commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel. |

| Вони вирушили і прийшли у землю Юдейську з великим військом; і він послав до Іуди і братів його послів з мирною, але підступною пропозицією. | So they departed, and came with a great power into the land of Juda, where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully. |

| Але вони не повірили словам їхнім, тому що бачили, що вони прийшли з великим військом. | But they gave no heed to their words; for they saw that they were come with great power. |

|
| До Алкима ж і Вакхида зійшлося зібрання книжників шукати справедливости. | Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of scribes, to require justice. |
|

|
| Перші з синів Ізраїлевих були асидеї; вони шукали у них миру, | Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them: |
|

|
| бо говорили: священик від племені Аарона прийшов разом з військом і не скривдить нас. | for said they, One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army, and he will do us no wrong. |
|
15
|
15
|
| І він говорив з ними мирно і клявся їм, і сказав: ми не зробимо зла вам і друзям вашим. | So he spake unto them peaceably, and sware unto them, saying, We will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends. |
|

|
16
|
| І вони повірили йому, а він, захопивши з них шістдесят чоловіків, умертвив їх в один день, як сказано у Писанні: | Whereupon they believed him: howbeit he took of them threescore men, and slew them in one day, according to the words which he wrote, |

|
| «тіла святих Твоїх і кров їх пролили навколо Єрусалима, і нíкому було поховати їх». | The flesh of thy saints have they cast out, and their blood have they shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them. |
|

|

|
| І напав від них страх і жах на весь народ, і говорили: немає у них істини і правди, бо вони порушили постанову і клятву, якою клялися. | Wherefore the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people, who said, There is neither truth nor righteousness in them; for they have broken the covenant and oath that they made. |

| Потім, доручивши країну Алкиму і залишивши з ним військо на допомогу йому, Вакхид вирушив до царя. | Then committed he the country to Alcimus, and left with him a power to aid him: so Bacchides went to the king. |

| Алким же домагався первосвященства. | But Alcimus contended for the high priesthood. |
|

| І зібралися до нього всі, хто підбурював народ свій, і оволоділи землею Юдейською і зробили велику поразку в Ізраїлі. | And unto him resorted all such as troubled the people, who, after they had gotten the land of Juda into their power, did much hurt in Israel. |
|

|
| І побачив Іуда все зло, яке заподіяв Алким зі своїми спільниками синам Ізраїлевим, — більше, ніж язичники; | Now when Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites, even above the heathen, |
|

|
| і, обійшовши всі межі Юдеї, вчинив помсту відступникам, — і вони перестали входити у цю країну. | he went out into all the coasts of Judea round about, and took vengeance of them that had revolted from him, so that they durst no more go forth into the country. |
|

|
| Коли ж Алким побачив, що Іуда і ті, що знаходилися з ним, підсилилися, і зрозумів, що не може протистояти їм, повернувся до царя і жорстоко звинувачував їх. | On the other side, when Alcimus saw that Judas and his company had gotten the upper hand, and knew that he was not able to abide their force, he went again to the king, and said evil things against them. |

| Тоді цар послав Никанора, одного зі славних вождів своїх, ненависника і ворога Ізраїля, і наказав йому знищити цей народ. | Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honourable princes, a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel, with commandment to destroy the people. |

|
| Никанор, прийшовши в Єрусалим з великим військом, послав до Іуди і братів його підступно зі словами мирними: | So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great force: and sent unto Judas and his brethren deceitfully with friendly words, saying, |

| нехай не буде війни між мною і вами; я ввійду з небагатьма людьми, щоб бачити лиця ваші у мирі. | Let there be no battle between me and you; I will come with a few men, that I may see you in peace. |
|

|
| І прийшов він до Іуди, і вітали вони один одного мирно; а тим часом воїни були готові схопити Іуду. | He came therefore to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably. Howbeit the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by violence. |
|

|
| Іуді стало відомо, що він прийшов до нього з підступом, тому він убоявся його і не хотів більше бачити лиця його. | Which thing after it was known to Judas, to wit, that he came unto him with deceit, he was sore afraid of him, and would see his face no more. |
|

|
| Коли Никанор довідався, що намір його відкрився, виступив проти Іуди на битву біля Хафарсалами. | Nicanor also, when he saw that his counsel was discovered, went out to fight against Judas beside Capharsalama: |

| І впало з тих, що були з Никанором, близько п’яти тисяч мужів, а інші втекли у місто Давидове. | and there were slain of Nicanor's side about five thousand men, and the rest fled into the city of David. |
|

|

|
| Після того Никанор зійшов на гору Сион; і вийшли зі святилища деякі зі священиків і старійшин народу, щоб мирно вітати його і показати йому всепалення, що приноситься за царя. | After this went Nicanor up to mount Sion, and there came out of the sanctuary certain of the priests and certain of the elders of the people, to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the burnt sacrifice that was offered for the king. |

| Але він осміяв їх, наглумився з них й осквернив їх, і говорив зарозуміло, | But he mocked them, and laughed at them, and abused them shamefully, and spake proudly, |
|

|
| і, поклявшися, з гнівом сказав: якщо не відданий буде нині Іуда і військо його в мої руки, то, коли повернуся благополучно, спалю дім цей. І пішов з великим гнівом. | and sware in his wrath, saying, Unless Judas and his host be now delivered into my hands, if ever I come again in safety, I will burn up this house: and with that he went out in a great rage. |

| А священики ввійшли і стали перед лицем жертовника і храму, заплакали і сказали: | Then the priests entered in, and stood before the altar and the temple, weeping, and saying, |

| Ти, Господи, обрав дім цей, щоб на ньому нарікалось ім’я Твоє, і щоб він був домом молитви і моління для народу Твого. | Thou, O Lord, didst choose this house to be called by thy name, and to be a house of prayer and petition for thy people: |
|

|
| Зроби помсту чоловікові цьому і війську його, і нехай упадуть вони від меча; згадай злохуління їхні і не дай їм залишатися надалі. | be avenged of this man and his host, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer. |
|

|
| І вийшов Никанор з Єрусалима і розташувався станом біля Вефорона, і пристало до нього тут військо сирійське. | So Nicanor went out of Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bethhoron, where a host out of Syria met him. |
|

| А Іуда з трьома тисячами мужів розташувався станом біля Адаси; і помолився Іуда, і сказав: | But Judas pitched in Adasa with three thousand men, and there he prayed, saying, |

|
| Господи! коли послані царя Ассирійського вимовляли злохуління, то прийшов ангел Твій і уразив з них сто вісімдесят п’ять тисяч. | O Lord, when they that were sent from the king of the Assyrians blasphemed, thine angel went out and smote an hundred fourscore and five thousand of them. |

| Так знищи нині перед нами це полчище, нехай пізнають інші, що вони промовляли хулу на святині Твої, і суди їх за злобою їхньою. | Even so destroy thou this host before us this day, that the rest may know that he hath spoken blasphemously against thy sanctuary, and judge thou him according to his wickedness. |

| І вступили війська у битву в тринадцятий день місяця Адара, і розбите було військо Никанора, і він першим упав у битві. | So the thirteenth day of the month Adar the hosts joined battle: but Nicanor's host was discomfited, and he himself was first slain in the battle. |
|

|
| Коли ж воїни його побачили, що Никанор упав, то, покидавши зброю свою, кинулися навтіки. | Now when Nicanor's host saw that he was slain, they cast away their weapons, and fled. |
|

|
| І переслідували їх ізраїльтяни цілий день, від Адаса до самої Газири, і сурмили вслід їм вістовими трубами. | Then they pursued after them a day's journey, from Adasa unto Gazera, sounding an alarm after them with their trumpets. |
|

|
| І виходили з усіх навколишніх селищ юдейських і оточували їх, — і вони, обертаючись до тих, що переслідували їх, усі упали від меча, і жодного не залишилося з них. | Whereupon they came forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and closed them in; so that they, turning back upon them that pursued them, were all slain with the sword, and not one of them was left. |

| І взяли юдеї здобич їхню і награбоване ними, і відрубали голову Никанора і праву руку його, яку він простягав гордовито, і принесли і повісили перед Єрусалимом. | Afterwards they took the spoils, and the prey, and smote off Nicanor's head, and his right hand, which he stretched out so proudly, and brought them away, and hanged them up toward Jerusalem. |

| Народ дуже радів і провів той день, як день великих веселощів; | For this cause the people rejoiced greatly, and kept that day as a day of great gladness. |

| і встановили щорічно святкувати цей день тринадцятого числа Адара. | Moreover they ordained to keep yearly this day, being the thirteenth of Adar. |

| І заспокоїлася земля Юдейська на якийсь час. | Thus the land of Juda was in rest a little while. |

| Іуда почув про славу римлян, що вони могутні і сильні і прихильно приймають усіх, хто звертається до них, і хто б не приходив до них, з усіма укладали вони дружбу. | Now Judas had heard of the fame of the Romans, that they were mighty and valiant men, and such as would lovingly accept all that joined themselves unto them, and make a league of amity with all that came unto them; |

| А що вони могутні і сильні, — розповідали йому про війни їхні, про мужні подвиги, які вони показали над галатами, як вони підкорили їх і зробили данниками; | and that they were men of great valour. It was told him also of their wars and noble acts which they had done among the Galatians, and how they had conquered them, and brought them under tribute; |

| також про те, що зробили вони у країні Іспанській, щоб оволодіти срібними і золотими рудниками, які знаходяться там, | and what they had done in the country of Spain, for the winning of the mines of the silver and gold which is there; |

| і своєю розсудливістю і твердістю оволоділи всім краєм, хоч той край дуже далеко відлежав від них, також і про царів, які виступали проти них від кінців землі, і вони знищили їх і уразили великою поразкою, а інші платять їм щорічно данину; | and that by their policy and patience they had conquered all the place, though it were very far from them; and the kings also that came against them from the uttermost part of the earth, till they had discomfited them, and given them a great overthrow, so that the rest did give them tribute every year: |

| вони також розбили на війні і підкорили собі Филипа і Персея, царя Китійського, й інших, що повстали проти них, | Beside this, how they had discomfited in battle Philip, and Perseus, king of the Citims, with others that lifted up themselves against them, and had overcome them: |

| і Антиоха, великого царя Азії, який вийшов проти них на війну зі ста двадцятьма слонами, і з кіннотою, і колісницями, і дуже численним військом і був розбитий ними; | how also Antiochus the great king of Asia, that came against them in battle, having an hundred and twenty elephants, with horsemen, and chariots, and a very great army, was discomfited by them; |

| вони взяли його живого і змусили платити їм велику данину, — як його, так і наступних після нього царів, — дати заручників і допустити розділ, | and how they took him alive, and covenanted that he and such as reigned after him should pay a great tribute, and give hostages, and that which was agreed upon, |

|
| а країну Індійську і Мідію, і Лідію й інші з кращих областей його, узявши від нього, віддали цареві Євменію; | and the country of India, and Media, and Lydia, and of the goodliest countries, which they took of him, and gave to king Eumenes. |
|

|
| і про те, як елліни намірилися прийти і знищити їх, | Moreover how the Grecians had determined to come and destroy them; |
|
10
|
10
|
| але цей намір зробився їм відомим, і вони послали проти них одного воєначальника і воювали проти них, — і багато з них упало уражених, і взяли у полон дружин їхніх і дітей їхніх і пограбували їх, і оволоділи їхньою землею, і зруйнували фортеці їхні, і поневолили їх до цього дня; | and that they, having knowledge thereof, sent against them a certain captain, and fighting with them slew many of them, and carried away captives their wives and their children, and spoiled them, and took possession of their lands, and pulled down their strong holds, and brought them to be their servants unto this day. |

| й інші царства й острови, які будь-коли повставали проти них, вони руйнували і поневолювали. | It was told him besides, how they destroyed and brought under their dominion all other kingdoms and isles that at any time resisted them; |

| А з друзями своїми і з тими, що довіряли їм, вони зберігали дружбу; й оволоділи царствами ближніми і дальніми, і всі, які чули ім’я їхнє, боялися їх. | but with their friends and such as relied upon them they kept amity: and that they had conquered kingdoms both far and nigh, insomuch as all that heard of their name were afraid of them: |

| Якщо захочуть кому допомогти і кого поставлять царем, ті царюють, і кого хочуть, змінюють, і вони дуже піднеслися; | also that, whom they would help to a kingdom, those reign; and whom again they would, they displace: finally, that they were greatly exalted: |
|

|
| але, попри все те, ніхто з них не покладав на себе вінця і не одягався у порфиру, щоб величатися нею. | yet for all this none of them wore a crown, or was clothed in purple, to be magnified thereby: |
|

|
| Вони склали у себе раду, і постійно щодня триста двадцять чоловік радяться в усьому, що стосується народу і благоустрою його; | moreover how they had made for themselves a senate house, wherein three hundred and twenty men sat in council daily, consulting alway for the people, to the end they might be well ordered: |
|

|
| і кожного року одній людині довіряють вони начальство над собою і володарювання над усією землею їхньою, і всі слухають одного, і не буває ні заздрости, ні ревнощів між ними. | and that they committed their government to one man every year, who ruled over all their country, and that all were obedient to that one, and that there was neither envy nor emulation among them. |

| Тоді обрав Іуда Евполема, сина Іоанового, сина Аккосового, й Іасона, сина Єлеазарового, і послав їх у Рим, щоб укласти з ними дружбу і союз, | In consideration of these things, Judas chose Eupolemus the son of John, the son of Accos, and Jason the son of Eleazar, and sent them to Rome, to make a league of amity and confederacy with them, |

| і щоб вони зняли з них ярмо, бо вони бачать, що Еллінське царство хоче поневолити Ізраїля. | and to intreat them that they would take the yoke from them; for they saw that the kingdom of the Grecians did oppress Israel with servitude. |
|

|
| Отже, вони вирушили у Рим, хоч шлях був дуже довгий, і ввійшли у зібрання ради і, приступивши, сказали: | They went therefore to Rome, which was a very great journey, and came into the senate, where they spake and said, |
|

|
| Іуда Маккавей і брати його і весь народ юдейський послали нас до вас, щоб укласти з вами союз і мир, і щоб ви вписали нас у число соратників і друзів ваших. | Judas Maccabeus with his brethren, and the people of the Jews, have sent us unto you, to make a confederacy and peace with you, and that we might be registered your confederates and friends. |

| І угодне було це слово перед ними. | So that matter pleased the Romans well. |
|

|
| І ось список того послання, яке написали вони у відповідь на мідних дошках і послали в Єрусалим, щоб воно служило для них там пам’ятником миру і союзу: | And this is the copy of the epistle which the senate wrote back again in tables of brass, and sent to Jerusalem, that there they might have by them a memorial of peace and confederacy: |

| «благо нехай буде римлянам і народу юдейському на морі й на суші на віки, і меч і ворог нехай будуть далеко від них! | Good success be to the Romans, and to the people of the Jews, by sea and by land for ever: the sword also and enemy be far from them. |

| Якщо ж настане війна раніше у римлян або у всіх союзників їхніх у всьому володінні їхньому, | If there come first any war upon the Romans or any of their confederates throughout all their dominion, |
|

|

|
| то народ юдейський повинен зробити їм усім серцем допомогу у війні, як вимагатиме того час; | the people of the Jews shall help them, as the time shall be appointed, with all their heart: |
|

|
26
|
| і тим, що воюють, вони не будуть ні давати, ні постачати ні хліба, ні зброї, ні грошей, ні кораблів, бо так угодно римлянам; вони повинні виконувати обов’язок свій, нічого не одержуючи. | neither shall they give any thing unto them that make war upon them, or aid them with victuals, weapons, money, or ships, as it hath seemed good unto the Romans: but they shall keep their covenants without taking any thing therefore. |

| Точно так само, якщо раніше трапиться війна у народу юдейського, римляни від душі будуть допомагати їм у війні, як вимагатиме того час, | In the same manner also, if war come first upon the nation of the Jews, the Romans shall help them with all their heart, according as the time shall be appointed them: |

|
| і тим, що допомагають у війні, не будуть давати ні хліба, ні зброї, ні грошей, ні кораблів: так угодно Риму; вони повинні виконувати свої обов’язки — і без обману». | neither shall victuals be given to them that take part against them, or weapons, or money, or ships, as it hath seemed good to the Romans; but they shall keep their covenants, and that without deceit. |

| На таких умовах уклали римляни союз з народом юдейським. | According to these articles did the Romans make a covenant with the people of the Jews. |
|

|
| Якщо ж після цих умов ті й другі захочуть що-небудь додати або зменшити, нехай зроблять це за їх загальним бажанням, і те, що вони додадуть або зменшать, буде мати силу. | Howbeit if hereafter the one party or the other shall think meet to add or diminish any thing, they may do it at their pleasures, and whatsoever they shall add or take away shall be ratified. |

| А про те зло, яке робить юдеям цар Димитрій, ми написали йому так: «для чого ти наклав тяжке твоє ярмо на друзів наших і союзників — юдеїв? | And as touching the evils that king Demetrius doeth to the Jews, we have written unto him, saying, Wherefore hast thou made thy yoke heavy upon our friends and confederates the Jews? |

| Якщо вони ще звернуться до нас зі скаргою на тебе, то ми виявимо до них справедливість і будемо воювати проти тебе на морі і на суші». | If therefore they complain any more against thee, we will do them justice, and fight with thee by sea and by land. |

| Коли Димитрій почув, що Никанор і воїни його впали у битві, послав Вакхида й Алкима вдруге у землю Юдейську і праве крило з ними. | Furthermore when Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his host were slain in battle, he sent Bacchides and Alcimus into the land of Judea the second time, and with them the chief strength of his host: |

| І вирушили вони по дорозі у Галгали і розташувалися станом біля Месалофа, що в Арвилах, і, оволодівши ним, погубили безліч людей. | who went forth by the way that leadeth to Galgala, and pitched their tents before Masaloth, which is in Arbela, and after they had won it, they slew much people. |

| У першому місяці сто п’ятдесят другого року розташувалися вони станом біля Єрусалима, | Also the first month of the hundred fifty and second year they encamped before Jerusalem: |

| але знялися і пішли до Вереї з двадцятьма тисячами мужів і двома тисячами кінноти. | from whence they removed, and went to Berea, with twenty thousand footmen and two thousand horsemen. |
|

| А Іуда розташувався станом біля Елеаса, і три тисячі обраних мужів з ним. | Now Judas had pitched his tents at Eleasa, and three thousand chosen men with him: |

|
| Але, побачивши безліч війська, яке воно численне, вони дуже настрашилися, і багато хто зі стану його розбігся, і залишилося у них не більше восьмисот мужів. | who seeing the multitude of the other army to be so great, were sore afraid; whereupon many conveyed themselves out of the host, insomuch as there abode of them no more but eight hundred men. |

| Коли побачив Іуда, що розбіглося ополчення його, а війна тривожила його, він засмутився серцем, тому що не мав часу зібрати їх. | When Judas therefore saw that his host slipt away, and that the battle pressed upon him, he was sore troubled in mind, and much distressed, for that he had no time to gather them together. |

| Він засмутився і сказав тим, що залишилися: встаньмо і ходімо на супротивників наших; можливо, ми в силах будемо воювати з ними. | Nevertheless unto them that remained he said, Let us arise and go up against our enemies, if peradventure we may be able to fight with them. |
|

|
| Але вони відхиляли його і говорили: ми не в силах, але будемо тепер рятувати життя наше, і потім повернемося з братами нашими і тоді будемо воювати проти них, а тепер нас мало. | But they dehorted him, saying, We shall never be able: let us now rather save our lives, and hereafter we will return with our brethren, and fight against them: for we are but few. |

| Але Іуда сказав: ні, нехай не буде цього зі мною, щоб бігти від них; а якщо прийшла година наша, то помремо мужньо за братів наших і не залишимо дорікання на славу нашу. | Then Judas said, God forbid that I should do this thing, and flee away from them: if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our honour. |

| І рушило військо зі стану і стало проти них; і розділилася кіннота на дві частини, а попереду війська йшли пращники і стрільці і всі сильні передові воїни. | With that the host of Bacchides removed out of their tents, and stood over against them, their horsemen being divided into two troops, and their slingers and archers going before the host, and they that marched in the foreward were all mighty men. |

| Вакхид же знаходився на правому крилі, і наближалися загони з обох боків і сурмили трубами. | As for Bacchides, he was in the right wing: so the host drew near on the two parts, and sounded their trumpets. |
|

|
| Засурмили трубами і ті, що були з Іудою, і заколивалася земля від шуму військ, і була завзята битва від ранку до вечора. | They also of Judas' side, even they sounded their trumpets also, so that the earth shook at the noise of the armies, and the battle continued from morning till night. |
|

|
| Коли побачив Іуда, що Вакхид і найміцніша частина його війська знаходяться на правому боці, то зібралися до нього всі хоробрі серцем, — | Now when Judas perceived that Bacchides and the strength of his army were on the right side, he took with him all the hardy men, |
|

|
| і розбили вони праве крило, і вони переслідували їх до гори Азоту. | who discomfited the right wing, and pursued them unto the mount Azotus. |
|

|

|
| Коли ті, що знаходилися на лівому крилі, побачили, що праве крило розбите, то повернули слідом за Іудою і тими, що були з ним, з тилу. | But when they of the left wing saw that they of the right wing were discomfited, they followed upon Judas and those that were with him hard at the heels from behind: |

| І битва була жорстока, і багато впало уражених з того й іншого боку, | whereupon there was a sore battle, insomuch as many were slain on both parts. |
|

|
| впав і Іуда, а інші кинулися навтіки. | Judas also was killed, and the remnant fled. |
|
19
|
19
|
| І взяли Іонафан і Симон Іуду, брата свого, і поховали його у гробі батьків його у Модині. | Then Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of his fathers in Modin. |
|

|
20
|
| Й оплакували його і ридали за ним сильно всі ізраїльтяни, і сумували багато днів і говорили: | Moreover they bewailed him, and all Israel made great lamentation for him, and mourned many days, saying, |

|
| як упав сильний, який спасав Ізраїля? | How is the valiant man fallen, that delivered Israel! |
|

|

|
| Інші ж діла Іуди і битви і мужні подвиги, які звершив він, і велич його не описані, бо їх було дуже багато. | As for the other things concerning Judas and his wars, and the noble acts which he did, and his greatness, they are not written, for they were very many. |
|

|
| Після смерти ж Іуди в усіх краях ізраїльських з’явилися люди беззаконні, і піднялися всі чинителі неправди. | Now after the death of Judas the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the coasts of Israel, and there arose up all such as wrought iniquity. |
|

|

|
| У ті самі дні був дуже сильний голод, і країна пристала до них. | In those days also was there a very great famine, by reason whereof the country revolted, and went with them. |
|
25
|
25
|
| І обрав Вакхид нечестивих мужів і поставив їх начальниками країни. | Then Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country. |
|

|

|
| Вони розвідували і розшукували друзів Іуди і приводили їх до Вакхида, а він мстився їм і знущався з них. | And they made enquiry and search for Judas' friends, and brought them unto Bacchides, who took vengeance of them, and used them despitefully. |
|

|
| І була велика скорбота в Ізраїлі, якої не бувало з того дня, як не стало у них пророка. | So was there a great affliction in Israel, the like whereof was not since the time that a prophet was not seen among them. |

| Тоді зібралися всі друзі Іуди і сказали Іонафану: | For this cause all Judas' friends came together, and said unto Jonathan, |

|
| відтоді, як помер брат твій Іуда, немає подібного до нього мужа, щоб виступити проти ворогів і Вакхида і проти ненависників нашого народу. | Since thy brother Judas died, we have no man like him to go forth against our enemies, and Bacchides, and against them of our nation that are adversaries to us. |

| І прийняв Іонафан у той час провід і став на місце Іуди, брата свого. | Upon this Jonathan took the governance upon him at that time, and rose up instead of his brother Judas. |

| І дізнався про те Вакхид і шукав убити його. | But when Bacchides gat knowledge thereof, he sought for to slay him. |
|

| Про це довідалися Іонафан і Симон, брат його, і всі, що були з ним, і втекли у пустелю Фекоє і розташувалися станом біля вод озера Асфар. | Then Jonathan, and Simon his brother, and all that were with him, perceiving that, fled into the wilderness of Thecoe, and pitched their tents by the water of the pool Asphar. |

| Вакхид, довідавшись про те у день суботній, переправився сам і все військо його за Йордан. | Which when Bacchides understood, he came near to Jordan with all his host upon the sabbath day. |

| А Іонафан відправив брата свого — проводиря народу — і просив друзів своїх, наватеїв, щоб скласти у них великий запас свій. | Now Jonathan had sent his brother John, a captain of the people, to pray his friends the Nabathites, that they might leave with them their carriage, which was much. |

| Але вийшли з Мидави сини Іамврі і схопили Іоана і все, що він мав, і пішли. | But the children of Jambri came out of Medaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went their way with it. |

| Після цих подій сказали Іонафану і Симону, братові його, що сини Іамврі урочисто справляють знатний шлюб і проводжають з Надавафа з великою пишнотою наречену, дочку одного зі знатних вельмож хананейських. | After this came word to Jonathan and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride from Nadabatha with a great train, as being the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan. |

| Тоді згадали вони про Іоана, брата свого, і вийшли, і сховалися під покровом гори. | Therefore they remembered John their brother, and went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain: |

| Звівши очі свої, вони побачили: ось виклики і велике придане; назустріч вийшов наречений і друзі його і брати його з тимпанами і музикою і з численною зброєю. | where they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and, behold, there was much ado and great carriage: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends and brethren, to meet them with drums, and instruments of music, and many weapons. |

| Тоді ті, що були з Іонафаном, піднялися на них із засідки і побили їх, і багато впало уражених, а інші втекли на гору; й узяли вони всю здобич їхню. | Then Jonathan and they that were with him rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and made a slaughter of them in such sort, as many fell down dead, and the remnant fled into the mountain, and they took all their spoils. |

| І обернулося шлюбне торжество на сум, і звук музики їх — на плач. | Thus was the marriage turned into mourning, and the noise of their melody into lamentation. |

| Так помстилися вони за кров брата свого і повернулися до болотистого місця біля Йордану. | So when they had avenged fully the blood of their brother, they turned again to the marsh of Jordan. |
|

|
| І почув про це Вакхид — і в день суботній прийшов до берегів Йордану з великим військом. | Now when Bacchides heard hereof, he came on the sabbath day unto the banks of Jordan with a great power. |
|

| Тоді сказав Іонафан тим, що були з ним: встаньмо тепер і будемо битися за життя наше, бо нині — не те, що вчора і третього дня. | Then Jonathan said to his company, Let us go up now and fight for our lives, for it standeth not with us to day, as in time past: |

| Ось, ворог і попереду нас і позаду нас, вода Йордану з того і з іншого боку, і болото і ліс, і немає місця, куди ухилитися. | for, behold, the battle is before us and behind us, and the water of Jordan on this side and that side, the marsh likewise and wood, neither is there place for us to turn aside. |

| Отже, тепер взивайте до неба, щоб визволитися вам від руки ворогів ваших. | Wherefore cry ye now unto heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies. |

| І почалася битва. І простяг Іонафан руку свою, щоб уразити Вакхида, але той ухилився від нього назад. | With that they joined battle, and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides, but he turned back from him. |
|

| І кинувся Іонафан і ті, що були з ним, у Йордан і перепливли на другий берег, а ті не перейшли за ними Йордану. | Then Jonathan and they that were with him leapt into Jordan, and swam over unto the farther bank: howbeit the other passed not over Jordan unto them. |

| Й упало у Вакхида у той день до тисячі мужів. | So there were slain of Bacchides' side that day about a thousand men. |
|

| І повернувся він у Єрусалим і побудував у Юдеї міцні міста: фортецю в Єрихоні, й Еммаум і Вефорон, і Вефиль і Фамнафу у Фарафоні, і Тефон з високими стінами, воротами і запорами, | Afterward returned Bacchides to Jerusalem, and repaired the strong cities in Judea; the fort in Jericho, and Emmaus, and Bethhoron, and Bethel, and Thamnatha, Pharathoni, and Taphon, these did he strengthen with high walls, with gates, and with bars. |

| і поставив у них сторо́жу, щоб вороже діяти проти Ізраїля. | And in them he set a garrison, that they might work malice upon Israel. |

| Зміцнив також місто у Вефсурі й Газару і фортецю і залишив у них військо з продовольчими запасами, | He fortified also the city Bethsura, and Gazara, and the tower, and put forces in them, and provision of victuals. |
|

| і взяв у заручники синів вождів країни і помістив їх у Єрусалимській фортеці під вартою. | Besides, he took the chief men's sons in the country for hostages, and put them into the tower at Jerusalem to be kept. |
|

| У сто п’ятдесят третьому році, у другому місяці, Алким звелів зруйнувати стіну внутрішнього двору храму і зруйнувати діло пророків, і вже почав руйнування. | Moreover in the hundred fifty and third year, in the second month, Alcimus commanded that the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary should be pulled down; he pulled down also the works of the prophets. |

| Але у той самий час Алким уражений був ударом, і зупинилися наміри його; вуста його зімкнулися, він онімів і не міг більше вимовити жодного слова і заповідати про дім свій. | And as he began to pull down, even at that time was Alcimus plagued, and his enterprizes hindered: for his mouth was stopped, and he was taken with a palsy, so that he could no more speak any thing, nor give order concerning his house. |

| І помер Алким у той же час у тяжких муках. | So Alcimus died at that time with great torment. |

| Коли Вакхид довідався, що Алким помер, повернувся до царя; і земля Юдейська два роки залишалася у спокої. | Now when Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead, he returned to the king: whereupon the land of Juda was in rest two years. |

| Тоді всі беззаконники радились і говорили: ось, Іонафан і ті, що знаходяться з ним, живуть безпечно у спокої; приведемо тепер Вакхида, і він схопить усіх їх в одну ніч. | Then all the ungodly men held a council, saying, Behold, Jonathan and his company are at ease, and dwell without care: now therefore we will bring Bacchides hither, who shall take them all in one night. |

| Пішли і запропонували йому таку пораду. | So they went and consulted with him. |

| Він зважився йти з великим військом і послав таємно листи всім союзникам своїм, які знаходилися в Юдеї, щоб вони схопили Іонафана і тих, що знаходяться з ним, але вони не могли, тому що задум їхній став відомим їм. | Then removed he, and came with a great host, and sent letters privily to his adherents in Judea, that they should take Jonathan and those that were with him: howbeit they could not, because their counsel was known unto them. |

| І впіймали вони з мужів країни винуватців цього лиходійства до п’ятдесяти чоловік і убили їх. | Wherefore they took of the men of the country, that were authors of that mischief, about fifty persons, and slew them. |

| Після цього відійшли Іонафан і Симон і ті, що були з ними, у Вефвасі, що в пустелі, і відбудували зруйноване там і укріпили місто. | Afterward Jonathan, and Simon, and they that were with him, got them away to Bethbasi, which is in the wilderness, and they repaired the decays thereof, and made it strong. |

| Довідавшись про це, Вакхид зібрав усе військо своє, сповістивши і тих, які знаходилися в Юдеї, | Which thing when Bacchides knew, he gathered together all his host, and sent word to them that were of Judea. |

| прийшов і обложив Вефвасі, і воював проти нього багато днів і спорудив машини. | Then went he and laid siege against Bethbasi; and they fought against it a long season, and made engines of war. |

| Іонафан же залишив у місті Симона, брата свого, а сам вийшов у країну і вийшов з невеликою кількістю, | But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city, and went forth himself into the country, and with a certain number went he forth. |

| й уразив Одоааррина і братів його і синів Фасирона у наметах їхніх і почав уражати і наступати із силою. | And he smote Odonarres and his brethren, and the children of Phasiron in their tent. |

| Тоді і Симон і ті, що були з ним, виступили з міста і спалили машини, | And when he began to smite them, and came up with his forces, Simon and his company went out of the city, and burned up the engines of war, |

| і воювали проти Вакхида, і він був розбитий ними; цим вони сильно засмутили його, тому що задум його і похід залишилися марними. | and fought against Bacchides, who was discomfited by them, and they afflicted him sore: for his counsel and travail was in vain. |

| Сильно розгнівався він на мужів беззаконних, які порадили йому йти в цю країну, і багатьох з них умертвив, і вирішив повернутися у землю свою. | Wherefore he was very wroth at the wicked men that gave him counsel to come into the country, insomuch as he slew many of them, and purposed to return into his own country. |

| І вгамувався меч в Ізраїлі, й оселився Іонафан у Махмасі; і почав Іонафан судити народ і знищив нечестивих із середовища Ізраїля. | Thus the sword ceased from Israel: but Jonathan dwelt at Machmas, and began to govern the people; and he destroyed the ungodly men out of Israel. |

| У сто шістдесятому році виступив Олександр, син Антиоха Єпифана, й оволодів Птолемаїдою: і прийняли його, і він став царювати там. | In the hundred and sixtieth year Alexander, the son of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, went up and took Ptolemais: for the people had received him, by means whereof he reigned there. |

| Коли почув про це цар Димитрій, зібрав дуже численне військо і вирушив проти нього на війну. | Now when king Demetrius heard thereof, he gathered together an exceeding great host, and went forth against him to fight. |
|

|
| І послав Димитрій лист Іонафану з мирною пропозицією, ніби бажаючи звеличити його, | Moreover Demetrius sent letters unto Jonathan with loving words, so as he magnified him. |
|

|
| бо говорив: попередимо укласти з ним мир, перш ніж він укладе з Олександром проти нас: | For said he, Let us first make peace with him, before he join with Alexander against us: |
|

|
| тоді він пригадає все зло, яке ми зробили проти нього і братів його і народу його. | else he will remember all the evils that we have done against him, and against his brethren and his people. |
|

|
| І він дав йому владу набирати військо і готувати зброю, щоб бути союзником його, і повелів віддати йому заручників, які знаходилися у фортеці. | Wherefore he gave him authority to gather together an host, and to provide weapons, that he might aid him in battle: he commanded also that the hostages that were in the tower should be delivered him. |

| Іонафан прийшов у Єрусалим і прочитав листи вголос усьому народу і тим, що були у фортеці; | Then came Jonathan to Jerusalem, and read the letters in the audience of all the people, and of them that were in the tower: |

| і убоялись усі великим страхом, почувши, що цар дав йому владу набирати військо; | who were sore afraid, when they heard that the king had given him authority to gather together an host. |
|

|

|
| а ті, що були у фортеці, видали Іонафану заручників, і він повернув їх батькам їхнім. | Whereupon they of the tower delivered their hostages unto Jonathan, and he delivered them unto their parents. |
|

|
10
|
| І жив Іонафан у Єрусалимі; і почав будувати і відновлювати місто, | This done, Jonathan settled himself in Jerusalem, and began to build and repair the city. |
|

|
11
|
| і сказав виконавцям робіт, щоб вони будували стіни і навколо гори Сион для міцности з чотирикутних каменів, — і робили так. | And he commanded the workmen to build the walls and the mount Sion round about with square stones for fortification; and they did so. |
|

|
| Тоді іноплемінники, які були у фортецях, побудованих Вакхидом, утекли: | Then the strangers, that were in the fortresses which Bacchides had built, fled away; |
|

| кожен залишив своє місце і пішов у свою землю. | insomuch as every man left his place, and went into his own country. |
|

|
| Тільки у Вефсурі залишилися деякі з тих, які залишили закон і заповіді, бо це місце служило для них притулком. | Only at Bethsura certain of those that had forsaken the law and the commandments remained still: for it was their place of refuge. |
|

| І почув цар Олександр про ті обіцянки, які Димитрій послав Іонафану, і розповіли йому про битви і хоробрі подвиги, які звершили Іонафан і брати його, і про труднощі, які перенесли вони. | Now when king Alexander had heard what promises Demetrius had sent unto Jonathan: when also it was told him of the battles and noble acts which he and his brethren had done, and of the pains that they had endured, |

| Тоді він сказав: чи знайдемо ми ще такого чоловіка, як цей? Зробимо ж його нашим другом і союзником. | he said, Shall we find such another man? now therefore we will make him our friend and confederate. |

| І написав і послав йому лист у таких словах: | Upon this he wrote a letter, and sent it unto him, according to these words, saying, |

| «Цар Олександр братові Іонафану — радуватися. | King Alexander to his brother Jonathan sendeth greeting: |

| Почули ми про тебе, що ти — муж, міцний силою і гідний бути нашим другом. | We have heard of thee, that thou art a man of great power, and meet to be our friend. |
|

|
20
|
| Отже, ми поставляємо тебе нині первосвящеником народу твого; і ти будеш називатися другом царя (він послав йому порфиру і золотий вінець), і будеш тримати нашу сторону і зберігати дружбу з нами». | Wherefore now this day we ordain thee to be the high priest of thy nation, and to be called the king's friend; (and therewithal he sent him a purple robe and a crown of gold:) and require thee to take our part, and keep friendship with us. |

| І вдягнувся Іонафан у священний одяг у сьомому місяці сто шістдесятого року у свято кущів, і зібрав військо і заготував безліч зброї. | So in the seventh month of the hundred and sixtieth year, at the feast of the tabernacles, Jonathan put on the holy robe, and gathered together forces, and provided much armour. |

| І почув про це Димитрій і засмутився, і сказав: | Whereof when Demetrius heard, he was very sorry, and said, |

| що це ми зробили, що Олександр випередив нас укласти дружбу з юдеями для підкріплення себе? | What have we done, that Alexander hath prevented us in making amity with the Jews to strengthen himself? |
|

|
| Напишу і я їм слова вітання, похвали і обіцянок, щоб були вони на допомогу мені. | I also will write unto them words of encouragement, and promise them dignities and gifts, that I may have their aid. |
|

|
| І послав їм лист у таких словах: «Цар Димитрій народу юдейському — радуватися. | He sent unto them therefore to this effect: King Demetrius unto the people of the Jews sendeth greeting: |

|
| Чули ми і раділи, що ви зберігаєте договори наші, перебуваєте у дружбі з нами і не схиляєтеся до ворогів наших. | Whereas ye have kept covenants with us, and continued in our friendship, not joining yourselves with our enemies, we have heard hereof, and are glad. |
|

|
| Продовжуйте і нині зберігати вірність нам, — і ми віддамо вам добром за те, що ви робите для нас: | Wherefore now continue ye still to be faithful unto us, and we will well recompense you for the things ye do in our behalf, |

| зробимо вам багато поступок і дамо вам дари. | and will grant you many immunities, and give you rewards. |
|

|
| Нині ж дозволяю вам і звільняю всіх юдеїв від податей і мита з соли і з вінців; | And now do I free you, and for your sake I release all the Jews, from tributes, and from the customs of salt, and from crown taxes, |
|

|
| і за третю частину насіння і половинну частину плодів з дерев, які належать мені, віднині і надалі я відміняю брати з землі Юдейської і з трьох областей, приєднаних до неї від Самарії і Галилеї, від нинішнього дня і на вічні часи. | and from that which appertaineth unto me to receive for the third part of the seed, and the half of the fruit of the trees, I release it from this day forth, so that they shall not be taken of the land of Juda, nor of the three governments which are added thereunto out of the country of Samaria and Galilee, from this day forth for evermore. |

| І Єрусалим нехай буде священним і вільним, і краї його, десятини і прибутки його. | Let Jerusalem also be holy and free, with the borders thereof, both from tenths and tributes. |
|

| Надаю і владу над фортецею Єрусалимською і надаю право первосвященикові поставити у ній людей, яких він сам обере, для охорони її; | And as for the tower which is at Jerusalem, I yield up my authority over it, and give it to the high priest, that he may set in it such men as he shall choose to keep it. |

| і всяку людину з юдеїв, узяту в полон із землі Юдейської, в усьому царстві моєму відпускаю на волю задарма: нехай усі будуть вільні від повинностей за себе і за худобу свою. | Moreover I freely set at liberty every one of the Jews, that were carried captives out of the land of Juda into any part of my kingdom, and I will that all my officers remit the tributes even of their cattle. |

| Усі свята і суботи і новомісяччя, і дні встановлені — три дні перед святом і три дні після свята, — усі ці дні нехай будуть днями пільги і волі всім юдеям, які знаходяться у моєму царстві. | Furthermore I will that all the feasts, and sabbaths, and new moons, and solemn days, and the three days before the feast, and the three days after the feast, shall be all days of immunity and freedom for all the Jews in my realm. |

| Ніхто не буде мати права пригноблювати й обтяжувати кого-небудь з них ні в якій справі. | Also no man shall have authority to meddle with them, or to molest any of them in any matter. |
|

|
| І нехай з юдеїв записуються у царські війська до тридцяти тисяч чоловік, — і їм буде даватися платня нарівні з усіма військами царськими. | I will further, that there be enrolled among the king's forces about thirty thousand men of the Jews, unto whom pay shall be given, as belongeth to all the king's forces. |

| І з них нехай поставляються начальниками над великими фортецями царськими, з них же нехай поставляються і над справами царства, що вимагають вірности, і їх приставники і начальники нехай будуть з них же, і нехай вони живуть за своїми законами, як повелів цар у землі Юдейській. | And of them some shall be placed in the king's strong holds, of whom also some shall be set over the affairs of the kingdom, which are of trust: and I will that their overseers and governors be of themselves, and that they live after their own laws, even as the king hath commanded in the land of Judea. |

| І три області, приєднані до Юдеї від країни Самарійської, нехай залишаться приєднаними до Юдеї, щоб вважатися і бути їм однією і не підлягати іншій владі, крім влади первосвященика. | And concerning the three governments that are added to Judea from the country of Samaria, let them be joined with Judea, that they may be reckoned to be under one, nor bound to obey other authority than the high priest's. |

| Птолемаїду з округом її я віддаю у дар святилищу в Єрусалимі на витрати, потрібні для святилища; | As for Ptolemais, and the land pertaining thereto, I give it as a free gift to the sanctuary at Jerusalem for the necessary expences of the sanctuary. |
|

|
| я ж даю щорічно п’ятнадцять тисяч сиклів срібла з царських зборів з належних місць. | Moreover I give every year fifteen thousand shekels of silver out of the king's accounts from the places appertaining. |
|

|

|
| І все інше, чого не віддали ті, що завідують зборами, як у попередні роки, віднині будуть віддавати на роботи храму. | And all the overplus, which the officers paid not in as in former time, from henceforth shall be given toward the works of the temple. |
|

|
| Понад те п’ять тисяч сиклів срібла, які брали від прибутків святилища з щорічного збору, і ті уступаються, як такі, що належать священикам, які служать. | And beside this, the five thousand shekels of silver, which they took from the uses of the temple out of the accounts year by year, even those things shall be released, because they appertain to the priests that minister. |

| І всі, які втечуть у храм Єрусалимський і в усі межі його з причини повинностей царських і всіх інших, нехай будуть вільні з усім, що належить їм у царстві моєму. | And whosoever they be that flee unto the temple at Jerusalem, or be within the liberties thereof, being indebted unto the king, or for any other matter, let them be at liberty, and all that they have in my realm. |

| І на спорудження й оновлення святилища кошти будуть видаватися зі зборів царських. | For the building also and repairing of the works of the sanctuary, expences shall be given out of the king's accounts. |
|

|

|
| І на побудову стін Єрусалима й укріплення їх навколо — кошти будуть видаватися з прибутків царських, а також — на побудову стін у Юдеї». | Yea, and for the building of the walls of Jerusalem, and the fortifying thereof round about, expences shall be given out of the king's accounts, as also for the building of the walls in Judea. |

| Іонафан і народ, вислухавши ці слова, не повірили їм і не прийняли їх, бо згадали про ті великі біди, які наніс Димитрій ізраїльтянам, жорстоко пригнобивши їх, | Now when Jonathan and the people heard these words, they gave no credit unto them, nor received them, because they remembered the great evil that he had done in Israel; for he had afflicted them very sore. |

| і віддали перевагу союзу з Олександром, бо він перший зробив їм мирні пропозиції, — і допомагали йому у війнах в усі дні. | But with Alexander they were well pleased, because he was the first that entreated of true peace with them, and they were confederate with him always. |

| Цар Олександр зібрав велике військо й ополчився проти Димитрія. | Then gathered king Alexander great forces, and camped over against Demetrius. |
|

|
| І вступили два царі у битву, і військо Димитрія кинулося навтіки; Олександр переслідував його, і переміг, | And after the two kings had joined battle, Demetrius' host fled: but Alexander followed after him, and prevailed against them. |
|

| і дуже наполегливо продовжував битву до самого заходження сонця, — і впав Димитрій у цей день. | And he continued the battle very sore until the sun went down: and that day was Demetrius slain. |
|

| Після того Олександр відправив послів до Птоломея, царя Єгипетського, з такими словами: | Afterward Alexander sent ambassadors to Ptolemee king of Egypt with a message to this effect: |

| І вирушив Птоломей з Єгипту сам і Клеопатра, дочка його, і прибули у Птолемаїду в сто шістдесят другому році. | So Ptolemee went out of Egypt with his daughter Cleopatra, and they came unto Ptolemais in the hundred threescore and second year: |

| Писав також цар Олександр Іонафану, щоб він вийшов до нього назустріч. | Now king Alexander had written unto Jonathan, that he should come and meet him. |

| І вирушив Іонафан у Птолемаїду з пишністю, — і відрекомендувався обом царям і обдарував їх і наближених до них сріблом і золотом і багатьма дарами, і придбав благовоління їх. | Who thereupon went honourably to Ptolemais, where he met the two kings, and gave them and their friends silver and gold, and many presents, and found favour in their sight. |

| І зібралися проти нього мужі зловредні із середовища Ізраїля, мужі беззаконні, щоб обмовити його; але цар не послухав їх. | At that time certain pestilent fellows of Israel, men of a wicked life, assembled themselves against him, to accuse him: but the king would not hear them. |

| І повелів цар зняти з Іонафана одяг його і одягти його у порфиру, — і зробили так. | Yea more than that, the king commanded to take off his garments, and clothe him in purple: and they did so. |

| І посадив його цар із собою і сказав своїм правителям: вийдіть з ним на середину міста і проголосіть, щоб ніхто не смів обмовляти його ні в якій справі і (*щоб) ніхто не турбував його ніякою справою. | Also he made him sit by himself, and said unto his princes, Go with him into the midst of the city, and make proclamation, that no man complain against him of any matter, and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause. |

| Коли обмовники побачили славу його, як він був проголошуваний і як убраний у порфиру, всі розбіглися. | Now when his accusers saw that he was honoured according to the proclamation, and clothed in purple, they fled all away. |

| Так прославив його цар і вписав його у число перших друзів, і призначив його воєначальником і обласним правителем. | So the king honoured him, and wrote him among his chief friends, and made him a duke, and partaker of his dominion. |

| І повернувся Іонафан у Єрусалим з миром і радістю. | Afterward Jonathan returned to Jerusalem with peace and gladness. |

| Але у сто шістдесят п’ятому році прийшов із Криту Димитрій, син Димитрія, у землю батьків своїх. | Furthermore in the hundred threescore and fifth year came Demetrius son of Demetrius out of Crete into the land of his fathers: |

| Почувши про це, цар Олександр дуже засмутився і повернувся в Антиохію. | whereof when king Alexander heard tell, he was right sorry, and returned into Antioch. |

| І поставив Димитрій воєначальником Аполлонія, правителя Келе-Сирії,– і він зібрав велике військо і розташувався станом біля Іамнії і послав до первосвященика Іонафана сказати: | Then Demetrius made Apollonius the governor of Celosyria his general, who gathered together a great host, and camped in Jamnia, and sent unto Jonathan the high priest, saying, |

| ти тільки один підносишся над нами, я ж був підданий осміянню і посоромленню через тебе. Навіщо ти протистоїш нам у горах? | Thou alone liftest up thyself against us, and I am laughed to scorn for thy sake, and reproached: and why dost thou vaunt thy power against us in the mountains? |

| Якщо ти надієшся на твої військові сили, то зійди до нас на рівнину, і там ми поміряємося, бо зі мною військо міст. | Now therefore, if thou trustest in thine own strength, come down to us into the plain field, and there let us try the matter together: for with me is the power of the cities. |

| Запитай і дізнайся, хто я та інші, що допомагають нам, і скажуть тобі: неможливо вам устояти перед лицем нашим, бо двічі втікали батьки твої у землі своїй. | Ask and learn who I am, and the rest that take our part, and they shall tell thee that thy foot is not able to stand before our face; for thy fathers have been twice put to flight in their own land. |

| І нині ти не можеш устояти проти такої кінноти і такого війська на рівнині, де немає ні каменів, ні ущелин, ні місця для захисту. | Wherefore now thou shalt not be able to abide the horsemen and so great a power in the plain, where is neither stone nor flint, nor place to flee unto. |

| Коли Іонафан вислухав ці слова Аполлонія, то подвигся духом і, обравши десять тисяч мужів, вийшов з Єрусалима, і брат його Симон зійшовся з ним на допомогу йому. | So when Jonathan heard these words of Apollonius, he was moved in his mind, and choosing ten thousand men he went out of Jerusalem, where Simon his brother met him for to help him. |

| І розташувався станом біля Іоппії; але не впустили його у місто, тому що в Іоппії була сторо́жа Аполлонія, і вони почали воювати проти неї. | And he pitched his tents against Joppe: but they shut him out of the city, because Apollonius had a garrison in Joppe. |

| Тоді налякані жителі відчинили йому місто, й Іонафан оволодів Іоппією. | Then Jonathan laid siege unto it: whereupon they of the city let him in for fear: and so Jonathan won Joppe. |

| Почувши про це, Аполлоній узяв три тисячі кінноти і велике військо і пішов до Азота, ніби роблячи перехід, а тим часом пішов на рівнину, тому що мав безліч кінноти і надіявся на неї. | Whereof when Apollonius heard, he took three thousand horsemen, with a great host of footmen, and went to Azotus as one that journeyed, and therewithal drew him forth into the plain, because he had a great number of horsemen, in whom he put his trust. |

| Іонафан же переслідував його до Азоту, і вступили війська у битву. | Then Jonathan followed after him to Azotus, where the armies joined battle. |

| Тим часом Аполлоній залишив тисячу вершників у потайному місці позаду них; | Now Apollonius had left a thousand horsemen in ambush. |

| але Іонафан довідався, що є засідка позаду нього. І обступили військо його і кидали у народ стріли з ранку до вечора, | And Jonathan knew that there was an ambushment behind him; for they had compassed in his host, and cast darts at the people, from morning till evening. |

| народ же стояв, як наказав Іонафан; нарешті вершники стомилися. | But the people stood still, as Jonathan had commanded them: and so the enemies' horses were tired. |
|

|
| Тоді Симон підвів військо своє і напав на загін, бо вершники знемогли, — і були розбиті ним і кинулися навтіки. | Then brought Simon forth his host, and set them against the footmen, (for the horsemen were spent,) who were discomfited by him, and fled. |

| І розсіялися вершники по рівнині й утекли в Азот, і увійшли у Бетдагон, капище їхнє, щоб урятуватися. | The horsemen also, being scattered in the field, fled to Azotus, and went into Beth-dagon, their idol's temple, for safety. |

| Але Іонафан спалив Азот і навколишні міста і взяв здобич їх, і капище Дагона з тими, що втекли у нього, спалив вогнем. | But Jonathan set fire on Azotus, and the cities round about it, and took their spoils; and the temple of Dagon, with them that were fled into it, he burned with fire. |

| І було полеглих від меча зі спаленими до восьми тисяч мужів. | Thus there were burned and slain with the sword well nigh eight thousand men. |

| Вирушивши звідти, Іонафан розташувався станом навпроти Аскалона; але жителі міста вийшли до нього назустріч з великою почестю. | And from thence Jonathan removed his host, and camped against Ascalon, where the men of the city came forth, and met him with great pomp. |

| І повернувся Іонафан з усіма, що були з ним, у Єрусалим, маючи при собі багато здобичі. | After this returned Jonathan and his host unto Jerusalem, having many spoils. |

| і послав йому золоту пряжку, яка за звичаєм давалася царським родичам, і подарував йому Аккарон і всю область його у спадкоємне володіння. | and sent him a buckle of gold, as the use is to be given to such as are of the king's blood: he gave him also Accaron with the borders thereof in possession. |

| Тим часом цар Єгипетський, зібравши численне військо, як пісок на березі морському, і безліч кораблів, намагався оволодіти царством Олександра хитрістю і приєднати його до свого царства. | And the king of Egypt gathered together a great host, like the sand that lieth upon the sea shore, and many ships, and went about through deceit to get Alexander's kingdom, and join it to his own. |

| Він прийшов у Сирію з мирними словами, і жителі відчиняли йому міста і виходили назустріч, бо дано було від царя Олександра повеління зустрічати його, тому що він був тестем його. | Whereupon he took his journey into Syria in peaceable manner, so as they of the cities opened unto him, and met him: for king Alexander had commanded them so to do, because he was his father in law. |

| Коли ж Птоломей входив у міста, то залишав військо для сторо́жі у кожному місті. | Now as Ptolemee entered into the cities, he set in every one of them a garrison of soldiers to keep it. |

| Коли наблизився він до Азота, то показали йому спалене капище Дагона, й Азот і навколишні міста зруйновані, і тіла уражені і спалені під час битви, бо склали їх у купи на шляху його, | And when he came near to Azotus, they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt, and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed, and the bodies that were cast abroad, and them that he had burnt in the battle: for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass. |

| і розповіли цареві про все, що зробив Іонафан, скаржачись на нього; але цар промовчав. | Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done, to the intent he might blame him: but the king held his peace. |

| Тоді вийшов Іонафан назустріч царю в Іоппію з пошаною, і вітали один одного і ночували там. | Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppe, where they saluted one another, and lodged. |
|

|
| І йшов Іонафан з царем до ріки, яка називалася Елевфера, і потім повернувся в Єрусалим. | Afterward Jonathan, when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus, returned again to Jerusalem. |
|

|
| Цар же Птоломей оволодів містами на морському березі до Селевкії приморської і складав злі задуми проти Олександра. | King Ptolemee therefore, having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the sea coast, imagined wicked counsels against Alexander. |
|

|
| І послав послів до царя Димитрія, говорячи: прийди сюди, укладемо між собою союз, і я дам тобі дочку мою, яку має Олександр, і ти будеш царювати у царстві батька твого. | Whereupon he sent ambassadors unto king Demetrius, saying, Come, let us make a league betwixt us, and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath, and thou shalt reign in thy father's kingdom: |

| Я каюся, що віддав йому дочку мою, бо він намагався убити мене. | for I repent that I gave my daughter unto him, for he sought to slay me. |

| Так обмовляв він його, тому що сам домагався царства його. | Thus did he slander him, because he was desirous of his kingdom. |
|

|
| І, віднявши у нього дочку свою, віддав її Димитрію, і став чужим для Олександра, і виявилася ворожнеча між ними. | Wherefore he took his daughter from him, and gave her to Demetrius, and forsook Alexander, so that their hatred was openly known. |
|

|
| І ввійшов Птоломей в Антиохію і поклав на свою голову два вінці — Азії та Єгипту. | Then Ptolemee entered into Antioch, where he set two crowns upon his head, the crown of Asia, and of Egypt. |
|

|
| Цар Олександр знаходився у той час у Киликії, тому що жителі тих місць відпали від нього. | In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia, because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him. |
|

|
| Почувши про це, Олександр пішов проти нього воювати; тоді Птоломей вивів військо і зустрів його з великою силою, і змусив його втікати. | But when Alexander heard of this, he came to war against him: whereupon king Ptolemee brought forth his host, and met him with a mighty power, and put him to flight. |

|
| І втік Олександр в Аравію, щоб сховатися там; цар же Птоломей піднісся. | So Alexander fled into Arabia, there to be defended; but king Ptolemee was exalted: |

| Завдиїл, аравитянин, зняв голову з Олександра і послав її Птоломею. | for Zabdiel the Arabian took off Alexander's head, and sent it unto Ptolemee. |
|

|
| Цар же Птоломей на третій день помер, а ті, що залишилися у фортецях, знищені були жителями фортець. | King Ptolemee also died the third day after, and they that were in the strong holds were slain one of another. |
|

|
| І став царювати Димитрій у сто шістдесят сьомому році. | By this means Demetrius reigned in the hundred threescore and seventh year. |
|

|
| У ті дні зібрав Іонафан юдеїв, щоб завоювати фортецю Єрусалимську, і спорудив перед нею безліч машин. | At the same time Jonathan gathered together them that were in Judea, to take the tower that was in Jerusalem: and he made many engines of war against it. |
|

|
| Але деякі ненависники народу свого, відступники від закону, пішли до царя і донесли, що Іонафан облягає фортецю. | Then certain ungodly persons, who hated their own people, went unto the king, and told him that Jonathan besieged the tower. |
|

|
| Коли він почув про це, розгнівався і, поспішно зібравшись, вирушив у Птолемаїду, і написав Іонафану, щоб він не облягав фортеці, а якомога швидше йшов йому назустріч у Птолемаїду, щоб переговорити з ним. | Whereof when he heard, he was angry, and immediately removing, he came to Ptolemais, and wrote unto Jonathan, that he should not lay siege to the tower, but come and speak with him at Ptolemais in great haste. |

| Але Іонафан, вислухавши це, наказав продовжувати облогу й, обравши зі старійшин ізраїльських і священиків, зважився піддатися небезпеці. | Nevertheless Jonathan, when he heard this, commanded to besiege it still: and he chose certain of the elders of Israel and the priests, and put himself in peril; |

| Узявши срібла і золота, одягу і багато інших дарів, він пішов до царя у Птолемаїду, і придбав благовоління його. | and took silver and gold, and raiment, and divers presents besides, and went to Ptolemais unto the king, where he found favour in his sight. |

| І хоча деякі відступники з того ж народу обмовляли його, | And though certain ungodly men of the people had made complaints against him, |
|

|
| але цар учинив з ним так само, як чинили з ним попередники його, і підніс його перед усіма друзями своїми, | yet the king entreated him as his predecessors had done before, and promoted him in the sight of all his friends, |
|

|
| й утвердив за ним первосвященство й інші почесні відзнаки, які він мав колись, і зробив його одним з перших друзів своїх. | and confirmed him in the high priesthood, and in all the honours that he had before, and gave him pre-eminence among his chief friends. |
|

|
| І просив Іонафан царя звільнити від податей Юдею і три області й Самарію й обіцяв йому триста талантів. | Then Jonathan desired the king, that he would make Judea free from tribute, as also the three governments, with the country of Samaria; and he promised him three hundred talents. |
|

|
| Цар погодився і написав Іонафану про все це лист такого змісту: | So the king consented, and wrote letters unto Jonathan of all these things after this manner: |

| «Цар Димитрій братові Іонафану і народу юдейському — радуватися. | King Demetrius unto his brother Jonathan, and unto the nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting: |

| Список листа, який ми писали про вас Ласфену, родичеві нашому, посилаємо і до вас, щоб ви знали. | We send you here a copy of the letter which we did write unto our cousin Lasthenes concerning you, that ye might see it. |

| Цар Димитрій Ласфену батькові — радуватися. | King Demetrius unto his father Lasthenes sendeth greeting: |

| Народу юдейському, друзям нашим, що вірно виконують свої обов’язки перед нами, ми розсудили зробити благодіяння за їхню добру прихильність до нас. | We are determined to do good to the people of the Jews, who are our friends, and keep covenants with us, because of their good will toward us. |

| Отже, ми затверджуємо за ними як межі Юдеї, так і три області: Аферему, Лідду і Рамафем, які приєднані до Юдеї від Самарії, і все, що належить усім жерцям їх у Єрусалимі, за ті царські оброки, які раніше щорічно одержував від них цар з плодів землі і з плодів дерев, | Wherefore we have ratified unto them the borders of Judea, with the three governments of Apherema and Lydda and Ramathem, that are added unto Judea from the country of Samaria, and all things appertaining unto them, for all such as do sacrifice in Jerusalem, instead of the payments which the king received of them yearly aforetime out of the fruits of the earth and of trees. |

| і все інше, що належить нам віднині з десятин і данини, що припадає нам, солоні озера і вінцевий збір, що нам належить, усе цілком уступаємо їм. | And as for other things that belong unto us, of the tithes and customs pertaining unto us, as also the saltpits, and the crown taxes, which are due unto us, we discharge them of them all for their relief. |

| І нічого не буде відмінено з цього віднині і назавжди. | And nothing hereof shall be revoked from this time forth for ever. |

| Отже, потурбуйтеся зробити список з цього, і нехай буде відданий він Іонафану і покладений на святій горі у призначеному місці». | Now therefore see that thou make a copy of these things, and let it be delivered unto Jonathan, and set upon the holy mount in a conspicuous place. |

| І побачив цар Димитрій, що схилилася земля перед ним і ніщо не противилося йому, і відпустив усі війська свої, кожного у своє місце, крім військ чужоземних, які він найняв з островів чужих народів, за що всі війська батьків його ненавиділи його. | After this, when king Demetrius saw that the land was quiet before him, and that no resistance was made against him, he sent away all his forces, every one to his own place, except certain bands of strangers, whom he had gathered from the isles of the heathen: wherefore all the forces of his fathers hated him. |

| Трифон, один з колишніх прихильників Олександра, бачачи, що всі війська нарікають на Димитрія, вирушив до Емалкуя аравитянина, який виховував Антиоха, малолітнього сина Олександра; | Moreover there was one Tryphon, that had been of Alexander's part afore, who, seeing that all the host murmured against Demetrius, went to Simalcue the Arabian, that brought up Antiochus the young son of Alexander, |

| і наполягав, щоб він видав його йому, щоб зробити його царем замість нього; і розповів йому про все, що зробив Димитрій, і про неприязнь, яку мають до нього війська його, і пробув там багато днів. | and lay sore upon him to deliver him this young Antiochus, that he might reign in his father's stead: he told him therefore all that Demetrius had done, and how his men of war were at enmity with him, and there he remained a long season. |

| І послав Іонафан до царя Димитрія, щоб він вивів залишених ним у Єрусалимській фортеці і укріпленнях, бо вони нападали на Ізраїля. | In the mean time Jonathan sent unto king Demetrius, that he would cast those of the tower out of Jerusalem, and those also in the fortresses: for they fought against Israel. |

| Димитрій послав сказати Іонафану: не тільки це зроблю для тебе і для народу твого, але і вшаную тебе і народ твій великою шаною, як тільки буду мати слушний час. | So Demetrius sent unto Jonathan, saying, I will not only do this for thee and thy people, but I will greatly honour thee and thy nation, if opportunity serve. |

| Тепер же ти справедливо вчиниш, якщо надішлеш мені людей на допомогу у війні, бо відійшли від мене усі війська мої. | Now therefore thou shalt do well, if thou send me men to help me; for all my forces are gone from me. |

| І послав до нього Іонафан у Антиохію три тисячі хоробрих мужів, і прийшли вони до царя, і зрадів цар прибуттю їх. | Upon this Jonathan sent him three thousand strong men unto Antioch: and when they came to the king, the king was very glad of their coming. |

| Громадяни ж, зібравшись на середину міста до ста двадцяти тисяч чоловік, хотіли убити царя. | Howbeit they that were of the city gathered themselves together into the midst of the city, to the number of an hundred and twenty thousand men, and would have slain the king. |
|

| Але цар утік у палац, а громадяни зайняли усі вулиці міста і почали облягати його. | Wherefore the king fled into the court, but they of the city kept the passages of the city, and began to fight. |
|

| Тоді цар викликав на допомогу юдеїв, і усі вони негайно зібралися біля нього, і раптово розсипалися по місту, й умертвили у той день у місті до ста тисяч, | Then the king called to the Jews for help, who came unto him all at once, and dispersing themselves through the city slew that day in the city to the number of an hundred thousand. |

| і запалили місто, і взяли у той день багато здобичі, і врятували царя. | Also they set fire on the city, and gat many spoils that day, and delivered the king. |
|

| І побачили громадяни, що юдеї оволоділи містом, як хотіли, і впали духом, і почали волати до царя, благаючи і говорячи: | So when they of the city saw that the Jews had got the city as they would, their courage was abated: wherefore they made supplication to the king, and cried, saying, |

| прости нас, і нехай юдеї перестануть нападати на нас і на місто. | Grant us peace, and let the Jews cease from assaulting us and the city. |
|

|
| І склали зброю й уклали мир. І прославились юдеї перед царем і перед усіма у царстві його і повернулися в Єрусалим з великою здобиччю. | With that they cast away their weapons, and made peace; and the Jews were honoured in the sight of the king, and in the sight of all that were in his realm; and they returned to Jerusalem, having great spoils. |

| І сів цар Димитрій на престолі царства свого, і заспокоїлася земля перед ним. | So king Demetrius sat on the throne of his kingdom, and the land was quiet before him. |
|

| Але він сказав неправду в усьому, що обіцяв, і зрадив Іонафана і не віддячив за зроблене йому добро і дуже образив його. | Nevertheless he dissembled in all that ever he spake, and estranged himself from Jonathan, neither rewarded he him according to the benefits which he had received of him, but troubled him very sore. |

| І взяв Трифон слонів і оволодів Антиохією. | Moreover Tryphon took the elephants, and won Antioch. |
|

| І писав юний Антиох Іонафану, говорячи: надаю тобі первосвященство і поставляю тебе над чотирма областями, і ти будеш у числі друзів царських. | At that time young Antiochus wrote unto Jonathan, saying, I confirm thee in the high priesthood, and appoint thee ruler over the four governments, and to be one of the king's friends. |

| І послав йому золоті сосуди і домашнє начиння і надав йому право пити з золотих сосудів і носити порфиру і золоту пряжку, | Upon this he sent him golden vessels to be served in, and gave him leave to drink in gold, and to be clothed in purple, and to wear a golden buckle. |

|
| а Симона, брата його, поставив воєначальником від области Тирської до меж Єгипту. | His brother Simon also he made captain from the place called The ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt. |
|

|
| І виступив Іонафан у похід, і проходив по той бік ріки [Йордану] і по містах, і зібралися до нього на допомогу всі сирійські війська; і прийшов він до Аскалона, і зустріли його жителі міста з честю. | Then Jonathan went forth, and passed through the cities beyond the water, and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him: and when he came to Ascalon, they of the city met him honourably. |

| Звідти пішов він у Газу; але жителі Гази замкнулися; і обложив він місто, і спалив вогнем передмістя його, і спустошив їх. | From whence he went to Gaza, but they of Gaza shut him out; wherefore he laid siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and spoiled them. |

| І упрохали жителі Гази Іонафана, і він примирився з ними, тільки взяв у заручники синів начальників їхніх і відіслав їх у Єрусалим, і пройшов країну до Дамаска. | Afterward, when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan, he made peace with them, and took the sons of their chief men for hostages, and sent them to Jerusalem, and passed through the country unto Damascus. |

| І почув Іонафан, що прийшли у Кадис, у Галилеї, воєначальники Димитрія з численним військом, щоб вигнати його із країни. | Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to Cades, which is in Galilee, with a great power, purposing to remove him out of the country, |

| Але він пішов назустріч їм, брата ж свого, Симона, залишив у країні. | he went to meet them, and left Simon his brother in the country. |
|

|
| І розташував Симон стан свій при Вефсурі, й облягав його багато днів, і замкнув його. | Then Simon encamped against Bethsura, and fought against it a long season, and shut it up: |

|
| І просили його про мир, і він погодився, але вигнав їх звідти, й оволодів містом, і поставив у ньому сторо́жу. | but they desired to have peace with him, which he granted them, and then put them out from thence, and took the city, and set a garrison in it. |
|

|
| А Іонафан і військо його розташувалися станом біля вод Геннісаретських і ранком стали на рівнині Насор. | As for Jonathan and his host, they pitched at the water of Gennesar, from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor. |

| І ось, військо іноплемінників зустрілося з ним на рівнині, залишивши проти нього засідку в горах, саме ж ішло назустріч йому з протилежного боку. | And, behold, the host of strangers met them in the plain, who, having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains, came themselves over against him. |

| І вийшли ті, що були у засідці, зі своїх місць, і почали битися: тоді всі, що були з Іонафаном, кинулися навтіки, | So when they that lay in ambush rose out of their places, and joined battle, all that were of Jonathan's side fled; |

| і жодного з них не залишилося, крім Маттафії, сина Авессаломового, й Іуди, сина Халфієвого, начальників військових загонів. | insomuch as there was not one of them left, except Mattathias the son of Absalom, and Judas the son of Calphi, the captains of the host. |

| І роздер Іонафан одяг свій, і посипав землю на голову свою, і молився. | Then Jonathan rent his clothes, and cast earth upon his head, and prayed. |
|

|
| Потім повернувся, щоб воювати з ними й уразив їх, і вони побігли. | Afterwards turning again to battle, he put them to flight, and so they ran away. |
|

| Побачивши це, ті що утекли від нього, повернулися до нього, і з ним переслідували їх до Кадиса, до самого стану їхнього, і там зупинилися. | Now when his own men that were fled saw this, they turned again unto him, and with him pursued them to Cades, even unto their own tents, and there they camped. |

| У той день упало від іноплемінників до трьох тисяч мужів; і повернувся Іонафан у Єрусалим. | So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men: but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem. |

| Іонафан, бачачи, що час сприятливий для нього, обрав мужів і послав у Рим встановити і відновити дружбу з римлянами, | Now when Jonathan saw that the time served him, he chose certain men, and sent them to Rome, for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them. |
|

|
| і до спартанців і в інші місця послав листи про те саме. | He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians, and to other places, for the same purpose. |
|

|
3
|
| І прийшли вони у Рим, і ввійшли у раду, і сказали: «Іонафан первосвященик і народ юдейський послали нас, щоб відновити дружбу з вами і союз, як і раніше». | So they went unto Rome, and entered into the senate, and said, Jonathan the high priest, and the people of the Jews, sent us unto you, to the end ye should renew the friendship, which ye had with them, and league, as in former time. |

| І там дали їм листи до місцевих начальників, щоб провели їх у землю Юдейську з миром. | Upon this the Romans gave them letters unto the governors of every place, that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably. |

| Ось список листа, який писав Іонафан спартанцям: | And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote to the Lacedemonians: |

| «первосвященик Іонафан і народні старійшини і священики й інший народ юдейський братам спартанцям — радуватися. | Jonathan the high priest, and the elders of the nation, and the priests, and the other people of the Jews, unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting: |

| Ще раніше від Дарія [Арея], який царював у вас, прислані були до первосвященика Онії листи, що ви — брати наші, як свідчить список. | There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from Darius, who reigned then among you, to signify that ye are our brethren, as the copy here underwritten doth specify. |

| І прийняв Онія посланого мужа з честю, і одержав листи, в яких ясно говорилося про союз і дружбу. | At which time Onias entreated the ambassador that was sent honourably, and received the letters, wherein declaration was made of the league and friendship. |

| Ми ж, хоч і не маємо потреби у них, маючи втіхою священні книги, які у руках наших, | Therefore we also, albeit we need none of these things, for that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us, |
|

| але вирішили послати до вас для відновлення братерства і дружби, щоб не відчужуватися від вас, тому що багато минуло часу після того, як ви посилали до нас. | have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood and friendship, lest we should become strangers unto you altogether: for there is a long time passed since ye sent unto us. |

| Але ми не хотіли турбувати вас та інших союзників і друзів наших у цих війнах, | Howbeit we would not be troublesome unto you, nor to others of our confederates and friends, in these wars: |

| бо ми маємо допомогу небесну, яка допомагає нам; ми позбулися ворогів наших, і вороги наші втихомирені. | for we have help from heaven that succoureth us, so as we are delivered from our enemies, and our enemies are brought under foot. |

| Тепер ми обрали Нумінія, сина Антиохового, й Антипатра, сина Іасонового, і послали їх до римлян відновити дружбу з ними і колишній союз. | For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus, and Antipater the son of Jason, and sent them unto the Romans, to renew the amity that we had with them, and the former league. |

| Доручили їм іти і до вас, вітати вас і вручити вам листи від нас про поновлення і з вами нашого братерства. | We commanded them also to go unto you, and to salute you, and to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood. |

| І ви добре зробите, відповівши нам на них». | Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto. |

| Ось і список листів, які надіслав Дарій [Арей]: | And this is the copy of the letters which Oniares sent. |

| «Цар Спартанський Онії первосвященикові — радуватися. | Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest, greeting: |

| Знайдено у писанні про спартанців і юдеїв, що вони — брати і від роду Авраамового. | It is found in writing, that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren, and that they are of the stock of Abraham: |

| Тепер, коли ми довідалися про це, ви добре зробите, написавши нам про добробут ваш. | now therefore, since this is come to our knowledge, ye shall do well to write unto us of your prosperity. |

| І почув Іонафан, що повернулися воєначальники Димитрія з більшим військом, ніж колись, щоб воювати проти нього, | Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius' princes were come to fight against him with a greater host than afore, |

| і вийшов з Єрусалима, і зустрів їх у країні Амафитській, і не дав їм часу ввійти у країну його. | he removed from Jerusalem, and met them in the land of Amathis: for he gave them no respite to enter his country. |
|

|
| І послав у стан їхній спостерігачів, які, повернувшись, оголосили йому, що вони готуються напасти на них у цю ніч. | He sent spies also unto their tents, who came again, and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night season. |
|

|
| Тому, коли зайшло сонце, Іонафан наказав своїм пильнувати, бути в озброєнні і готуватися до битви всю ніч, і поставив навколо стану передових сторожів. | Wherefore so soon as the sun was down, Jonathan commanded his men to watch, and to be in arms, that all the night long they might be ready to fight: also he sent forth centinels round about the host. |

| І почули вороги, що Іонафан зі своїми приготувався до битви, і злякалися, і затремтіли серцем своїм, і, запаливши вогні у стані своєму, пішли. | But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battle, they feared, and trembled in their hearts, and they kindled fires in their camp. |

| Іонафан же і ті, що були з ним, не знали про те до ранку, бо бачили розпалені вогні. | Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning: for they saw the lights burning. |

| І погнався Іонафан за ними, але не наздогнав їх, тому що вони перейшли ріку Елевферу. | Then Jonathan pursued after them, but overtook them not: for they were gone over the river Eleutherus. |

| Тоді Іонафан обернувся на арабів, називаних заведеями, уразив їх і взяв здобич їхню. | Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians, who were called Zabadeans, and smote them, and took their spoils. |

| Потім, повернувши, прийшов у Дамаск і пройшов по всій тій країні. | And removing thence, he came to Damascus, and so passed through all the country. |

| І Симон вийшов, і пройшов до Аскалона і найближчих фортець, і повернувся в Іоппію, й оволодів нею, | Simon also went forth, and passed through the country unto Ascalon, and the holds there adjoining, from whence he turned aside to Joppe, and won it. |

| бо він почув, що [іоппіяни] хочуть здати фортецю військам Димитрія, — і поставив там сторо́жу, щоб охороняти її. | For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius' part: wherefore he set a garrison there to keep it. |

| І повернувся Іонафан, і скликав старійшин народу, і радився з ними, щоб побудувати фортеці в Юдеї, | After this came Jonathan home again, and calling the elders of the people together, he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea, |
|

36
|
| підвищити стіни Єрусалима і спорудити високу стіну між фортецею і містом, щоб відокремити її від міста, так щоб вона була окремо, і не було б у ній ні купівлі, ні продажу. | and making the walls of Jerusalem higher, and raising a great mount between the tower and the city, for to separate it from the city, that so it might be alone, that men might neither sell nor buy in it. |

| Коли зібралися облаштувати місто і дійшли до стіни біля потоку зі східного боку, то побудували так звану Хафенафу. | Upon this they came together to build up the city, forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was fallen down, and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha. |
|

|
| А Симон побудував Адиду в Сефилі, і зміцнив ворота і запори. | Simon also set up Adida in Sephela, and made it strong with gates and bars. |
|

|
| Тим часом Трифон домагався стати царем Азії і покласти на себе вінець і підняти руку на царя Антиоха, | Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia, and to kill Antiochus the king, that he might set the crown upon his own head. |
|

|
| але побоювався, як би не перешкодив йому Іонафан і не почав проти нього війну; тому шукав випадку, щоб узяти Іонафана й убити, і, піднявшись, пішов у Вефсан. | Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him, and that he would fight against him; wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan, that he might kill him. So he removed, and came to Bethsan. |

| І вийшов Іонафан назустріч йому з сорока тисячами обраних мужів, готових до битви, і прийшов у Вефсан. | Then Jonathan went out to meet him with forty thousand men chosen for the battle, and came to Bethsan. |

| Коли Трифон побачив, що Іонафан іде з численним військом, то побоявся підняти на нього руки. | Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with so great a force, he durst not stretch his hand against him; |
|

|
| І прийняв його з честю, і представив його всім друзям своїм, дав йому подарунки, наказав військам своїм коритися йому, як собі самому. | but received him honourably, and commended him unto all his friends, and gave him gifts, and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him, as to himself. |
|

|
| Потім сказав Іонафану: для чого ти утруднюєш весь цей народ, коли не чекає на нас війна? | Unto Jonathan also he said, Why hast thou put all this people to so great trouble, seeing there is no war betwixt us? |
|

|

|
| Отже, відпусти їх тепер у доми їхні, а для себе обери небагатьох мужів, які були б з тобою, і підемо зі мною у Птолемаїду, і я передам її тобі й інші фортеці й решту військ і всіх, що завідують зборами, і потім повернуся; бо для цього я і перебуваю тут. | Therefore send them now home again, and choose a few men to wait on thee, and come thou with me to Ptolemais, for I will give it thee, and the rest of the strong holds and forces, and all that have any charge: as for me, I will return and depart: for this is the cause of my coming. |

| І повірив йому Іонафан, і зробив так, як він сказав, і відпустив війська, і вони вирушили у землю Юдейську; | So Jonathan believing him did as he bade him, and sent away his host, who went into the land of Judea. |

|
| із собою ж залишив три тисячі мужів, з яких дві тисячі залишив у Галилеї, тисяча ж вирушила з ним. | And with himself he retained but three thousand men, of whom he sent two thousand into Galilee, and one thousand went with him. |
|

|
| Але як тільки увійшов Іонафан у Птолемаїду, птолемаїдяни замкнули ворота, і схопили його, і всіх, хто увійшов з ним, убили мечем. | Now as soon as Jonathan entered into Ptolemais, they of Ptolemais shut the gates, and took him, and all them that came with him they slew with the sword. |

| Тоді Трифон послав військо і кінноту в Галилею і на велику рівнину, щоб знищити всіх, що були з Іонафаном. | Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and horsemen into Galilee, and into the great plain, to destroy all Jonathan's company. |

| Але вони, почувши, що Іонафан схоплений і загинув, і ті, що були з ним, підбадьорили один одного, і вийшли густим строєм, готові битися. | But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain, they encouraged one another, and went close together, prepared to fight. |

| І побачили ті, що переслідували, що йдеться про життя, і повернулися назад. | They therefore that followed upon them, perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives, turned back again. |
|

|
| А вони всі благополучно прийшли у землю Юдейську й оплакували Іонафана і тих, що були з ним, і були у великому страху, і весь Ізраїль плакав гірким плачем. | Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably, and there they bewailed Jonathan, and them that were with him, and they were sore afraid; wherefore all Israel made great lamentation. |

| Тоді всі навколишні народи шукали, як знищити їх, бо говорили: тепер немає у них начальника і поборника; отже, будемо тепер воювати проти них і знищимо із середовища людей пам’ять їх. | Then all the heathen that were round about them sought to destroy them: for said they, They have no captain, nor any to help them: now therefore let us make war upon them, and take away their memorial from among men. |

| Почув Симон, що Трифон зібрав велике військо, щоб іти у землю Юдейську і розорити її. | Now when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea, and destroy it, |
|

|

|
| І бачачи, що народ у страху і тремтінні, зійшов у Єрусалим і зібрав народ. | and saw that the people was in great trembling and fear, he went up to Jerusalem, and gathered the people together, |
|
3
|
3
|
| І, підбадьорюючи їх, говорив їм: самі ви знаєте, скільки я і брати мої і дім батька мого зробили заради цих законів і святині, знаєте війни і гноблення, які ми витерпіли. | and gave them exhortation, saying, Ye yourselves know what great things I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have done for the laws and the sanctuary, the battles also and troubles which we have seen, |

| Тому і загинули всі брати мої за Ізраїля, і залишився я один. | by reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israel's sake, and I am left alone. |
|

|
| І нині нехай не буде того, щоб я став щадити життя моє в усі часи гноблення, бо я не кращий за братів моїх. | Now therefore be it far from me, that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble: for I am no better than my brethren. |
|

|
| Але буду мститися за народ мій і за святилище, і за дружин і за дітей наших, бо об’єдналися всі народи, щоб знищити нас через неприязнь. | Doubtless I will avenge my nation, and the sanctuary, and our wives, and our children: for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice. |

| І запалився дух народу, як тільки почув він такі слова; | Now as soon as the people heard these words, their spirit revived. |
|

|

|
| і відповіли гучним голосом, і сказали: ти — наш вождь замість Іуди та Іонафана, брата твого. | And they answered with a loud voice, saying, Thou shalt be our leader instead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother. |
|

|

|
| Веди нашу війну, і що ти скажеш нам, ми все зробимо. | Fight thou our battles, and whatsoever thou commandest us, that will we do. |
|

|

|
| Тоді зібрав він усіх мужів ратних, і поспішив закінчити стіни Єрусалима, і з усіх боків зміцнив його. | So then he gathered together all the men of war, and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem, and he fortified it round about. |
|

|
| Потім послав Іонафана, сина Авессаломового, і з ним достатню кількість війська в Іоппію, і він вигнав тих, що були у ній, і залишився там. | Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom, and with him a great power, to Joppe: who casting out them that were therein remained there in it. |

| Тим часом Трифон піднявся з Птолемаїди з численним військом, щоб увійти у землю Юдейську; з ним був й Іонафан під вартою. | So Tryphon removed from Ptolemais with a great power to invade the land of Judea, and Jonathan was with him in ward. |

| Симон же розташував стан при Адиді навпроти рівнини. | But Simon pitched his tents at Adida, over against the plain. |
|

|

|
| Коли Трифон довідався, що Симон заступив місце Іонафана, брата свого, і має намір вступити у битву з ним, то послав до нього послів сказати: | Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was risen up instead of his brother Jonathan, and meant to join battle with him, he sent messengers unto him, saying, |

| за срібло, яке брат твій Іонафан заборгував царській скарбниці за потребами, які він мав, ми затримали його. | Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold, it is for money that he is owing unto the king's treasure, concerning the business that was committed unto him. |

| Отже, надішли тепер сто талантів срібла і у заручники двох синів його, щоб він, бувши відпущеним, не відійшов від нас, — і ми відпустимо його. | Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver, and two of his sons for hostages, that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us, and we will let him go. |

| Симон розумів, що вони говорять з ним підступно, але послав срібло і дітей, щоб не викликати великої ненависти народу, | Hereupon Simon, albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him, yet sent he the money and the children, lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people: |
|

|
| який сказав би: через те, що я не послав йому срібла і дітей, Іонафан загинув. | who might have said, Because I sent him not the money and the children, therefore is Jonathan dead. |
|

| Отже, послав дітей і сто талантів; але Трифон обманув і не відпустив Іонафана. | So he sent them the children and the hundred talents: howbeit Tryphon dissembled, neither would he let Jonathan go. |
|

| Після цього Трифон пішов, щоб увійти в країну і розорити її, і пішов манівцем на Адару. Але Симон і військо його йшли слідом за ним усюди, куди він йшов. | And after this came Tryphon to invade the land, and destroy it, going round about by the way that leadeth unto Adora: but Simon and his host marched against him in every place, wheresoever he went. |

| Ті ж, що були у фортеці, послали до Трифона послів, щоб спонукати його прийти до них через пустелю і надіслати їм продовольчі припаси. | Now they that were in the tower sent messengers unto Tryphon, to the end that he should hasten his coming unto them by the wilderness, and send them victuals. |

| І приготував Трифон усю свою кінноту, щоб іти у ту ж ніч, але був дуже великий сніг, і він не пішов через сніг, а, піднявшись, вирушив у Галаад. | Wherefore Tryphon made ready all his horsemen to come that night: but there fell a very great snow, by reason whereof he came not. So he departed, and came into the country of Galaad. |

| І оплакував його весь Ізраїль гірким плачем, і сумували за ним багато днів. | And all Israel made great lamentation for him, and bewailed him many days. |

| І спорудив Симон будівлю над гробом батька свого і братів своїх і звів її високою, для благовидости, з тесаного каменю з передньої і задньої сторони, | Simon also built a monument upon the sepulchre of his father and his brethren, and raised it aloft to the sight, with hewn stone behind and before. |

|
| і поставив на ній сім пірамід, одну навпроти іншої, батькові і матері і чотирьом братам; | Moreover he set up seven pyramids, one against another, for his father, and his mother, and his four brethren. |
|

|
| зробив на них майстерні прикраси, поставивши навколо високі стовпи, а на стовпах повне озброєння — на вічну пам’ять, і поряд зі зброєю — вирізьблені кораблі, так що вони видимі були всім, хто плаває по морю. | And in these he made cunning devices, about the which he set great pillars, and upon the pillars he made all their armour for a perpetual memory, and by the armour ships carved, that they might be seen of all that sail on the sea. |

| Трифон же з підступництвом вирушив у путь з юним царем Антиохом і убив його, | Now Tryphon dealt deceitfully with the young king Antiochus, and slew him. |

| і став царем замість нього, і поклав на себе вінець Азії, і зробив велике ураження на землі. | And he reigned in his stead, and crowned himself king of Asia, and brought a great calamity upon the land. |

| А Симон будував фортеці в Юдеї, зміцнюючи їх високими вежами і великими стінами, воротами і запорами, і складав у фортецях продовольчі запаси. | Then Simon built up the strong holds in Judea, and fenced them about with high towers, and great walls, and gates, and bars, and laid up victuals therein. |

| Потім обрав Симон мужів і послав до царя Димитрія просити, щоб він зробив полегшення країні, бо всі діяння Трифона були грабіжницькі. | Moreover Simon chose men, and sent to king Demetrius, to the end he should give the land an immunity, because all that Tryphon did was to spoil. |

| І послав йому цар Димитрій відповідь на ці слова і написав такий лист: | Unto whom king Demetrius answered and wrote after this manner: |

| «Цар Димитрій Симону, первосвященикові і другові царів, і старійшинам і народу юдейському — радуватися. | King Demetrius unto Simon the high priest, and friend of kings, as also unto the elders and nation of the Jews, sendeth greeting: |
|

|
| Золотий вінець і пальмову гілку, послану вами, ми одержали і готові укласти з вами повний мир і написати тим, що завідують зборами, щоб відпустити вам данину. | The golden crown, and the scarlet robe, which ye sent unto us, we have received: and we are ready to make a stedfast peace with you, yea, and to write unto our officers, to confirm the immunities which we have granted. |

| І все, що ми ухвалили про вас, нехай буде незмінно, і фортеці, які ви побудували, нехай належать вам. | And whatsoever covenants we have made with you shall stand; and the strong holds, which ye have builded, shall be your own. |

| Прощаємо вам також ненавмисні провини ваші до цього дня і вінцевий збір, який платити ви зобов’язані, і якщо інше щось стягувалося у Єрусалимі, більш не буде стягуватися. | As for any oversight or fault committed unto this day, we forgive it, and the crown tax also, which ye owe us: and if there were any other tribute paid in Jerusalem, it shall no more be paid. |

| І якщо знайдуться з вас здатні бути вписаними у число тих, що знаходяться при нас, нехай записуються, і нехай буде між нами мир». | And look who are meet among you to be in our court, let them be enrolled, and let there be peace betwixt us. |

| У сто сімдесятому році знято ярмо язичників з Ізраїля; | Thus the yoke of the heathen was taken away from Israel in the hundred and seventieth year. |

| і народ Ізраїльський у листуванні й договорах почав писати: «першого року при Симоні, великому первосвященику, вожді і правителеві юдеїв». | Then the people of Israel began to write in their instruments and contracts, In the first year of Simon the high priest, the governor and leader of the Jews. |

|
| У цей час Симон зробив напад на Газу, оточив її військом, збудував облогові машини і присунув їх до міста, розбив одну вежу й оволодів нею. | In those days Simon camped against Gaza, and besieged it round about; he made also an engine of war, and set it by the city, and battered a certain tower, and took it. |

|
| А ті, що були на машині, вскочили у місто, і сталося в місті велике сум’яття. | And they that were in the engine leaped into the city; whereupon there was a great uproar in the city: |

| І зійшли громадяни з дружинами і дітьми на стіну, роздерши одяг свій, і голосно волали, благаючи Симона дати їм помилування, | insomuch as the people of the city rent their clothes, and climbed upon the walls with their wives and children, and cried with a loud voice, beseeching Simon to grant them peace. |

| і говорили: вчини з нами не за злими справами нашими, але з милости твоєї. | And they said, Deal not with us according to our wickedness, but according to thy mercy. |

| І змилосердився над ними Симон, і не воював з ними, а тільки вигнав їх з міста, й очистив доми, в яких знаходилися ідоли, і так увійшов у місто зі славослів’ями і благословеннями. | So Simon was appeased toward them, and fought no more against them, but put them out of the city, and cleansed the houses wherein the idols were, and so entered into it with songs and thanksgiving. |

| І викинув з нього все нечисте, й оселив там мужів, які дотримуються закону, й укріпив його, і влаштував у ньому для себе житло. | Yea, he put all uncleanness out of it, and placed such men there as would keep the law, and made it stronger than it was before, and built therein a dwelling place for himself. |

| Тим же, що були у Єрусалимській фортеці, не дозволяли ні виходити, ні вступати у країну, ні купувати, ні продавати, і вони терпіли сильний голод, і багато хто з них загинув від голоду. | They also of the tower in Jerusalem were kept so strait, that they could neither come forth, nor go into the country, nor buy, nor sell: wherefore they were in great distress for want of victuals, and a great number of them perished through famine. |

| Тоді воззвали вони до Симона про мир, і він дав їм його, але вигнав їх звідти й очистив фортецю від оскверніння, | Then cried they to Simon, beseeching him to be at one with them: which thing he granted them; and when he had put them out from thence, he cleansed the tower from pollutions; |

| і ввійшов у неї у двадцять третій день другого місяця сто сімдесят першого року зі славослів’ями, пальмовим віттям, з гуслями, кимвалами і цитрами, із псалмами і піснями, бо знищено великого ворога Ізраїля. | and entered into it the three and twentieth day of the second month, in the hundred seventy and first year, with thanksgiving, and branches of palm trees, and with harps, and cymbals, and with viols, and hymns, and songs: because there was destroyed a great enemy out of Israel. |

| І встановив кожного року проводити цей день з веселощами, й укріпив гору храму, яка знаходиться поблизу фортеці, й оселився там сам і ті, що були з ним. | He ordained also that that day should be kept every year with gladness. Moreover the hill of the temple that was by the tower he made stronger than it was, and there he dwelt himself with his company. |

| І побачив Симон, що син його Іоан змужнів, і поставив його начальником над усіма військами, й оселився у Газарі. | And when Simon saw that John his son was a valiant man, he made him captain of all the hosts; and he dwelt in Gazara. |

| У сто сімдесят другому році цар Димитрій зібрав війська свої і вирушив у Мідію, щоб одержати допомогу собі для війни проти Трифона. | Now in the hundred threescore and twelfth year king Demetrius gathered his forces together, and went into Media, to get him help to fight against Tryphon. |
|

|
| Але Арсак, цар Перський і Мідійський, почувши, що Димитрій прийшов у межі його, послав одного з воєначальників своїх взяти його живого. | But when Arsaces, the king of Persia and Media, heard that Demetrius was entered within his borders, he sent one of his princes to take him alive: |

| Той вирушив і розбив військо Димитрія, узяв його, і привів до Арсака, який замкнув його у в’язниці. | who went and smote the host of Demetrius, and took him, and brought him to Arsaces, by whom he was put in ward. |
|

|
| І спочивала земля Юдейська в усі дні Симона; він дбав про благо народу свого, і подобалася їм влада і слава його в усі дні. | As for the land of Judea, that was quiet all the days of Simon; for he sought the good of his nation in such wise, as that evermore his authority and honour pleased them well. |
|

|
| І до всієї своєї слави, він узяв ще Іоппію для пристані і відкрив вхід островам морським, | And as he was honourable in all his acts, so in this, that he took Joppe for an haven, and made an entrance to the isles of the sea, |
|

|
| і поширив межі народу свого, й оволодів тією країною. | and enlarged the bounds of his nation, and recovered the country, |
|

|
7
|
| Він набрав безліч полонених і володарював над Газарою і Вефсурою і над фортецею, очистив її від осквернення, і не було тих, хто противився йому. | and gathered together a great number of captives, and had the dominion of Gazara, and Bethsura, and the tower, out of the which he took all uncleanness, neither was there any that resisted him. |

| Юдеї спокійно обробляли землю свою, і земля давала плоди свої і дерева у полях — плід свій. | Then did they till their ground in peace, and the earth gave her increase, and the trees of the field their fruit. |

| Старці, сидячи на вулицях, усе радилися про користі суспільні, і юнаки одягалися у пишний і військовий одяг. | The ancient men sat all in the streets, communing together of good things, and the young men put on glorious and warlike apparel. |

| Містам постачав він продовольчі припаси і робив їх місцями укріпленими, так що славне ім’я його вимовлялося до країв землі. | He provided victuals for the cities, and set in them all manner of munition, so that his honourable name was renowned unto the end of the world. |

| Він відновив мир у країні, і радувався Ізраїль великою радістю. | He made peace in the land, and Israel rejoiced with great joy: |

| І сидів кожен під виноградом своїм і під смоковницею своєю, і ніхто не страшив їх. | for every man sat under his vine and his fig tree, and there was none to fray them: |

|
| І не залишилося нікого на землі, хто воював би проти них, і царі смирилися у ті дні. | neither was there any left in the land to fight against them: yea, the kings themselves were overthrown in those days. |

|
| Він підкріплював усіх бідних у народі своєму, вимагав виконання закону і знищував усякого беззаконника і злодія, | Moreover he strengthened all those of his people that were brought low: the law he searched out; and every contemner of the law and wicked person he took away. |
|

|
| прикрасив святилище і примножив священне начиння. | He beautified the sanctuary, and multiplied the vessels of the temple. |
|

|
16
|
| Коли дійшла чутка до Рима і до Спарти, що Іонафан помер, вони дуже засмутилися. | Now when it was heard at Rome, and as far as Sparta, that Jonathan was dead, they were very sorry. |
|

|
| Коли ж почули, що Симон, брат його, став замість нього первосвящеником і володарює над країною і містами, які знаходяться у ній, | But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon was made high priest in his stead, and ruled the country, and the cities therein: |

| то написали до нього на мідних дошках, щоб відновити з ним дружбу і союз, укладений ними з братами його Іудою та Іонафаном. | they wrote unto him in tables of brass, to renew the friendship and league which they had made with Judas and Jonathan his brethren: |

| Вони були прочитані в Єрусалимі перед зібранням. | which writings were read before the congregation at Jerusalem. |
|

|
| Ось список з листів, присланих спартанцями: «Спартанські начальники і місто — Симону первосвященикові, старійшинам і священикам і всьому народу юдейському, братам нашим — радуватися. | And this is the copy of the letters that the Lacedemonians sent; The rulers of the Lacedemonians, with the city, unto Simon the high priest, and the elders, and priests, and residue of the people of the Jews, our brethren, send greeting: |

| Посли, прислані до народу нашого, розповіли нам про вашу славу і честь, і ми зраділи прибуттю їх | The ambassadors that were sent unto our people certified us of your glory and honour: wherefore we were glad of their coming, |

| і записали сказане ними у народній раді так: Нуминій, син Антиоха, й Антипатр, син Іасона, посли юдейські, прийшли до нас відновити з нами дружбу. | and did register the things that they spake in the council of the people in this manner; Numenius son of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, the Jews' ambassadors, came unto us, to renew the friendship they had with us. |

| Й угодно було народу прийняти цих мужів з пошаною і внести запис слів їхніх у відкриті народні книги, на пам’ять народу спартанському. А список з цього ми написали для первосвященика Симона». | And it pleased the people to entertain the men honourably, and to put the copy of their ambassage in public records, to the end the people of the Lacedemonians might have a memorial thereof: furthermore we have written a copy thereof unto Simon the high priest. |

| Після того Симон послав Нуминія у Рим з великим золотим щитом, вагою у тисячу мин, щоб укласти з ними союз. | After this Simon sent Numenius to Rome with a great shield of gold of a thousand pound weight, to confirm the league with them. |

| Коли почув про це народ, то сказав: яку подяку віддамо ми Симону і синам його? | Whereof when the people heard, they said, What thanks shall we give to Simon and his sons? |

| Бо він твердо стояв і брати його і дім батька його, і відбили ворогів Ізраїля, і здобули йому свободу. | For he and his brethren and the house of his father have established Israel, and chased away in fight their enemies from them, and confirmed their liberty. |

Ось список написаного: «У вісімнадцятий день Елула сто сімдесят другого року, — це був третій рік за первосвященика Симона, — | So then they wrote it in tables of brass, which they set upon pillars in mount Sion: and this is the copy of the writing; The eighteenth day of the month Elul, in the hundred threescore and twelfth year, being the third year of Simon the high priest, |

| у Сарамелі, у великому зібранні священиків і народу і князів народних і старійшин країни, оголошено нам: | at Saramel in the great congregation of the priests, and people, and rulers of the nation, and elders of the country, were these things notified unto us. |

| оскільки багато разів бували війни у цій країні, то Симон, син Маттафії, син синів Іарива, і брати його, піддаючи себе небезпеці, протистали ворогам народу свого, щоб зберегти святилище його і закон, і великою славою прославили народ свій. | Forasmuch as oftentimes there have been wars in the country, wherein for the maintenance of their sanctuary, and the law, Simon the son of Mattathias, of the posterity of Jarib, together with his brethren, put themselves in jeopardy, and resisting the enemies of their nation did their nation great honour: |

| І бачив народ діяння Симона і славу, яку намагався він здобути народу своєму, і поставив його своїм начальником і первосвящеником за те, що все це зробив він, і за справедливість і вірність, яку він зберігав до племені свого, всіляко намагаючись піднести народ свій. | The people therefore, seeing the acts of Simon, and unto what glory he thought to bring his nation, made him their governor and chief priest, because he had done all these things, and for the justice and faith which he kept to his nation, and for that he sought by all means to exalt his people. |

| Він оселив у ній юдеїв і укріпив її для безпеки країни і міста і підвищив стіни Єрусалима. | but he placed Jews therein, and fortified it for the safety of the country and the city, and raised up the walls of Jerusalem. |

| Тому і цар Димитрій затвердив за ним первосвященство, | King Demetrius also confirmed him in the high priesthood according to those things, |

| і залічив його до друзів своїх, і вшанував його великою славою. | and made him one of his friends, and honoured him with great honour. |

|
| Бо він почув, що римляни назвали юдеїв друзями і союзниками і братами і з честю прийняли послів Симона, | For he had heard say, that the Romans had called the Jews their friends and confederates and brethren; and that they had entertained the ambassadors of Simon honourably: |

|
| що юдеї і священики погодилися, щоб Симон був у них начальником і первосвящеником навік, доки постане Пророк вірний, | also that the Jews and priests were well pleased that Simon should be their governor and high priest for ever, until there should arise a faithful prophet; |

|
| щоб він був у них воєначальником і мав піклування про святих і поставляв їх над роботами їхніми і над областю, і над зброєю, і над фортецями, | moreover that he should be their captain, and should take charge of the sanctuary, to set them over their works, and over the country, and over the armour, and over the fortresses, that, I say, he should take charge of the sanctuary; |

| щоб мав піклування про святилище, і всі слухалися його, щоб усі договори у країні писалися на його ім’я, і щоб він одягався у порфиру і носив золоті прикраси. | beside this, that he should be obeyed of every man, and that all the writings in the country should be made in his name, and that he should be clothed in purple, and wear gold: |

| І нікому з народу і священиків нехай не буде дозволено відмінити що-небудь з цього або суперечити словам його, або без нього скликати зібрання у країні й одягатися у порфиру і носити золоту пряжку. | Also that it should be lawful for none of the people or priests to break any of these things, or to gainsay his words, or to gather an assembly in the country without him, or to be clothed in purple, or wear a buckle of gold: |

| А хто зробить що-небудь проти цього, або відмінить щось із цього, буде винен». | and whosoever should do otherwise, or break any of these things, he should be punished. |

| І погодився весь народ підкоритися Симону і чинити за словами цими. | Thus it liked all the people to deal with Simon, and to do as hath been said. |

| Симон прийняв і погодився бути первосвящеником і воєначальником і правителем юдеїв та священиків і бути начальником над усіма. | Then Simon accepted hereof, and was well pleased to be high priest, and captain and governor of the Jews and priests, and to defend them all. |

| І вирішили викарбувати запис цей на мідних дошках і поставити їх в огорожі храму на видному місці, | So they commanded that this writing should be put in tables of brass, and that they should be set up within the compass of the sanctuary in a conspicuous place; |

| а списки з них покласти у скарбниці, щоб мав їх Симон і сини його. | also that the copies thereof should be laid up in the treasury, to the end that Simon and his sons might have them. |

| І надіслав Антиох, син царя Димитрія, листи з островів морських до Симона, великого священика і правителя народу юдейського, і до всього народу. | Moreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent letters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews, and to all the people; |

| Вони були такого змісту: «Цар Антиох Симону, первосвященику і правителю народу, і народу юдейському — радуватися. | the contents whereof were these: King Antiochus to Simon the high priest and prince of his nation, and to the people of the Jews, greeting: |

| Оскільки люди зловредні оволоділи царством батьків наших, то я хочу повернути царство, щоб відновити його, як воно було раніше. Я набрав численне військо і приготував військові кораблі; | Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers, and my purpose is to challenge it again, that I may restore it to the old estate, and to that end have gathered a multitude of foreign soldiers together, and prepared ships of war; |

| і хочу пройти по області, щоб покарати тих, які спустошили область нашу і розорили багато міст у царстві. | my meaning also being to go through the country, that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it, and made many cities in the kingdom desolate: |

| Залишаю тепер за тобою всі данини, які уступали тобі царі, що були раніше за мене, й інші дари, які вони уступали тобі; | now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations which the kings before me granted thee, and whatsoever gifts besides they granted. |

| Єрусалим і святилище нехай будуть вільні; і всю зброю, яку ти заготував, і фортеці, побудовані тобою, якими ти володієш, нехай залишаються у тебе. | And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary, let them be free; and all the armour that thou hast made, and fortresses that thou hast built, and keepest in thine hands, let them remain unto thee. |

| І всякий борг царський і майбутні царські борги відтепер і назавжди нехай будуть відпущені тобі. | And if any thing be, or shall be, owing to the king, let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore. |

| І переслідував його цар Антиох, і він утік у Дору, яка біля моря; | Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus, he fled unto Dora, which lieth by the sea side: |

| І прийшов Антиох до Дори і з ним сто двадцять тисяч воїнів і вісім тисяч кінноти | Then camped Antiochus against Dora, having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war, and eight thousand horsemen. |

| й оточив місто, а кораблі підійшли з моря, і тіснив він місто із суші і моря, і не давав нікому ні вийти, ні ввійти. | And when he had compassed the city round about, and joined ships close to the town on the sea side, he vexed the city by land and by sea, neither suffered he any to go out or in. |

| Тоді прийшов з Рима Нуминій і ті, що супроводжували його, з листами до царів і країн, в яких було написане таке: | In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome, having letters to the kings and countries; wherein were written these things: |

| «Левкій, консул Римський, царю Птоломею — радуватися. | Lucius, consul of the Romans unto king Ptolemee, greeting: |

| Прийшли до нас юдейські посли, друзі наші і союзники, послані від первосвященика Симона і народу юдейського, відновити давню дружбу і союз, | The Jews' ambassadors, our friends and confederates, came unto us to renew the old friendship and league, being sent from Simon the high priest, and from the people of the Jews: |

| і принесли золотий щит у тисячу мин. | and they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound. |
|

|
| Отже, ми захотіли написати царям і країнам, щоб вони не чинили їм зла, і не воювали проти них і міст їхніх і країни їхньої, і не допомагали тим, хто воює проти них. | We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countries, that they should do them no harm, nor fight against them, their cities, or countries, nor yet aid their enemies against them. |

| Ми розсудили прийняти від них щит. | It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them. |
|

| Отже, якщо які зловредні люди втекли до вас із країни їхньої, видайте їх первосвященику Симону, щоб він покарав їх за законом їхнім». | If therefore there be any pestilent fellows, that have fled from their country unto you, deliver them unto Simon the high priest, that he may punish them according to their own law. |

| Те саме написав він царю Димитрію й Атталу, Аріарафі й Арсаку, | The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king, and Attalus, to Ariarathes, and Arsaces, |

| і в усі області, і Сампсамі і спартанцям, і в Делос, і в Минд, і в Сикіон, і в Карію, і в Самос, і в Памфілію, і в Ликію, і в Галикарнасс, і в Родос, і у Фасиліду, і в Кос, і в Сиду, і в Арад, і в Гортину, і в Книду, і в Кіпр, і в Киринію. | and to all the countries, and to Sampsames, and the Lacedemonians, and to Delus, and Myndus, and Sicyon, and Caria, and Samos, and Pamphylia, and Lycia, and Halicarnassus, and Rhodus, and Phaselis, and Cos, and Side, and Aradus, and Gortyna, and Cnidus, and Cyprus, and Cyrene. |

| Цар же Антиох обложив Дору вдруге, нападаючи на неї з усіх боків і будуючи машини, і закрив Трифона так, що неможливо було йому ні ввійти, ні вийти. | So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day, assaulting it continually, and making engines, by which means he shut up Tryphon, that he could neither go out nor in. |

| І послав до нього Симон дві тисячі обраних мужів на допомогу йому, і срібло і золото, і достатньо запасів; | At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him; silver also, and gold, and much armour. |
|

| але він не захотів прийняти це і відкинув усе, в чому раніше домовився з ним, і відчужився від нього. | Nevertheless he would not receive them, but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore, and became strange unto him. |
|

|
| І послав до нього Афиновія, одного з друзів своїх, щоб переговорити з ним і сказати: «Ви володієте Іоппією і Газарою і фортецею Єрусалимською — містами царства мого; | Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius, one of his friends, to commune with him, and say, Ye withhold Joppe and Gazara, with the tower that is in Jerusalem, which are cities of my realm. |

| ви спустошили межі їх і зробили велике ураження на землі, й оволоділи багатьма місцями у царстві моєму. | The borders thereof ye have wasted, and done great hurt in the land, and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom. |
|

| Отже, віддайте тепер міста, які ви взяли, і данину з тих місць, якими ви володієте поза межами юдейськими. | Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken, and the tributes of the places, whereof ye have gotten dominion without the borders of Judea: |

| Якщо ж не так, то дайте за них п’ятсот талантів срібла, і за спустошення, яке вчинили, і за данину з міст інші п’ятсот талантів; а якщо не дасте, то ми прийдемо і будемо воювати з вами». | or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver; and for the harm that ye have done, and the tributes of the cities, other five hundred talents: if not, we will come and fight against you. |

| І прийшов Афиновій, друг царя, у Єрусалим, і коли побачив славу Симона і скарбницю з золотим і срібним начинням і навколишню красу, то здивувався й оголосив йому слова царя. | So Athenobius the king's friend came to Jerusalem: and when he saw the glory of Simon, and the cupboard of gold and silver plate, and his great attendance, he was astonished, and told him the king's message. |

| Симон сказав йому у відповідь: ми ні чужої землі не брали, ні володарювали над чужим, але володіємо спадщиною батьків наших, яку вороги наші одного разу неправедно привласнили собі. | Then answered Simon, and said unto him, We have neither taken other men's land, nor holden that which appertaineth to others, but the inheritance of our fathers, which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time. |

| Ми ж, вибравши час, знову повернули собі спадщину батьків наших. | Wherefore we, having opportunity, hold the inheritance of our fathers. |
|

| Що стосується Іоппії та Газари, яких ти вимагаєш, то вони самі заподіяли багато зла народу у країні нашій; за них ми дамо сто талантів. На це Афиновій нічого не відповів; | And whereas thou demandest Joppe and Gazara, albeit they did great harm unto the people in our country, yet will we give an hundred talents for them. Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word; |

| але, з досадою повернувшись до царя, розповів йому ці слова і про славу Симона, і про все, що бачив, і цар сильно розгнівався. | but returned in a rage to the king, and made report unto him of these speeches, and of the glory of Simon, and of all that he had seen: whereupon the king was exceeding wroth. |

| Трифон же, сівши на корабель, утік в Орфосіаду. | In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias. |

| Тоді цар, зробивши воєначальником приморської країни Кендевея, доручив йому піші і кінні війська | Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea coast, and gave him an host of footmen and horsemen, |

| і наказав йому йти війною проти Юдеї, наказав йому також побудувати Кедрон і укріпити ворота, і як воювати з народом; сам же цар погнався за Трифоном. | and commanded him to remove his host toward Judea: also he commanded him to build up Cedron, and to fortify the gates, and to war against the people; but as for the king himself, he pursued Tryphon. |

| І прийшов Кендевей в Іамнію, і почав викликати на битву народ і вдиратися в Юдею і брати народ у полон і вбивати; | So Cendebeus came to Jamnia, and began to provoke the people, and to invade Judea, and to take the people prisoners, and slay them. |

| і побудував Кедрон, і розташував там кінноту і військо, щоб вони, виходячи звідти, обходили дороги Юдеї, як наказав йому цар. | And when he had built up Cedron, he set horsemen there, and an host of footmen, to the end that issuing out they might make outroads upon the ways of Judea, as the king had commanded him. |

| І повернувся Іоан із Газари і розповів Симону, батькові своєму, про те, що робив Кендевей. | Then came up John from Gazara, and told Simon his father what Cendebeus had done. |

| Тоді Симон покликав двох старших синів своїх, Іуду й Іоана, і сказав їм: я і брати мої і дім батька мого воювали проти ворогів Ізраїля від юности до сьогодні і багато разів успішно рятували руками нашими Ізраїля. | Wherefore Simon called his two eldest sons, Judas and John, and said unto them, I, and my brethren, and my father's house, have ever from our youth unto this day fought against the enemies of Israel; and things have prospered so well in our hands, that we have delivered Israel oftentimes. |

| Але ось, я постарів, а ви з милости Божої перебуваєте у літах зрілих: заступіть місце моє і брата мого, йдіть і воюйте за народ наш, і нехай буде з вами допомога небесна. | But now I am old, and ye, by God's mercy, are of a sufficient age: be ye instead of me and my brother, and go and fight for our nation, and the help from heaven be with you. |

| І обрав із країни двадцять тисяч воїнів і вершників, і пішли вони проти Кендевея, і ночували у Модині. | So he chose out of the country twenty thousand men of war with horsemen, who went out against Cendebeus, and rested that night at Modin. |

| Вставши ж уранці, вийшли на рівнину, і ось численне військо назустріч їм, піші і кінні, і між ними був потік. | And when as they rose in the morning, and went into the plain, behold, a mighty great host both of footmen and horsemen came against them: howbeit there was a water brook betwixt them. |
|

| І рушив проти них сам і народ його, і бачачи, що народ боїться переходити потік, він перейшов перший, і побачили це воїни, і перейшли за ним. | So he and his people pitched over against them: and when he saw that the people were afraid to go over the water brook, he went first over himself, and then the men seeing him passed through after him. |

| І розділив він народ, поставивши кінних серед піших; кіннота ж ворогів була дуже численна. | That done, he divided his men, and set the horsemen in the midst of the footmen: for the enemies' horsemen were very many. |
|

| І засурмили священними трубами; і Кендевей кинувся навтіки і військо його, й упало у них багато поранених, інші ж утекли у фортецю. | Then sounded they with the holy trumpets: whereupon Cendebeus and his host were put to flight, so that many of them were slain, and the remnant gat them to the strong hold. |

| Тоді був поранений Іуда, брат Іоана; але Іоан переслідував їх, доки не прийшов у Кедрон, який він побудував. | At that time was Judas John's brother wounded; but John still followed after them, until he came to Cedron, which Cendebeus had built. |
|

| І втекли вони у вежі, що знаходилися в області Азота, але він спалив його вогнем, і загинуло їх до двох тисяч мужів; і повернувся він з миром у землю Юдейську. | So they fled even unto the towers in the fields of Azotus; wherefore he burned it with fire: so that there were slain of them about two thousand men. Afterward he returned into the land of Judea in peace. |

| Птоломей же, син Авува, був поставлений воєначальником на рівнині Єрихонській, і мав багато срібла і золота; | Moreover in the plain of Jericho was Ptolemeus the son of Abubus made captain, and he had abundance of silver and gold: |

| бо він був зятем первосвященика. | for he was the high priest's son in law. |
|

|
| І загордилося серце його, і захотів він оволодіти країною, і чинив підступні задуми проти Симона і синів його, щоб погубити їх. | Wherefore his heart being lifted up, he thought to get the country to himself, and thereupon consulted deceitfully against Simon and his sons to destroy them. |
|

|
| Тим часом Симон, відвідуючи міста країни і піклуючись про потреби їх, прийшов у Єрихон, сам і Маттафія й Іуда, сини його, у сто сімдесят сьомому році в одинадцятому місяці, — це місяць Сават. | Now Simon was visiting the cities that were in the country, and taking care for the good ordering of them; at which time he came down himself to Jericho with his sons, Mattathias and Judas, in the hundred threescore and seventeenth year, in the eleventh month, called Sabat: |

| І з підступністю прийняв їх гостинно син Авувів у невеликій фортеці, називаній Док, ним побудованій, і зробив для них великий бенкет, і сховав там людей. | where the son of Abubus receiving them deceitfully into a little hold, called Docus, which he had built, made them a great banquet: howbeit he had hid men there. |

| І коли сп’яніли Симон і сини його, тоді встав Птоломей і ті, що були при ньому, взяли зброю свою і ввійшли до Симона під час бенкету, й убили його і двох синів його і деяких зі служителів його. | So when Simon and his sons had drunk largely, Ptolemee and his men rose up, and took their weapons, and came upon Simon into the banqueting place, and slew him, and his two sons, and certain of his servants. |

| Так учинив він велике віроломство і відплатив за добро злом. | In which doing he committed a great treachery, and recompensed evil for good. |
|

| Птоломей написав про це і послав до царя, щоб послав йому військо на допомогу, і він віддасть йому країну їх і міста. | Then Ptolemee wrote these things, and sent to the king, that he should send him an host to aid him, and he would deliver him the country and cities. |
|

| І деяких послав у Газару убити Іоана, а тисячоначальникам послав листи, щоб вони прийшли до нього, і він дасть їм срібла і золота і подарунки; | He sent others also to Gazara to kill John: and unto the tribunes he sent letters to come unto him, that he might give them silver, and gold, and rewards. |

| а інших послав заволодіти Єрусалимом і горою храму. | And others he sent to take Jerusalem, and the mountain of the temple. |
|

| Але хтось, прибігши до Іоана у Газару, сповістив йому, що батько його і брати умертвлені і що Птоломей послав убити і його. | Now one had run afore to Gazara, and told John that his father and brethren were slain, and, quoth he, Ptolemee hath sent to slay thee also. |
|

| Почувши про це, Іоан дуже засмутився і, схопивши чоловіків, які прийшли погубити його, убив їх, бо довідався, що вони шукали погубити його. | Hereof when he heard, he was sore astonished: so he laid hands on them that were come to destroy him, and slew them; for he knew that they sought to make him away. |

| Інші ж діла Іоана і вíйни його і мужні подвиги його, славно звершені, і спорудження стін, ним побудованих, та інші діяння його, | As concerning the rest of the acts of John, and his wars, and worthy deeds which he did, and the building of the walls which he made, and his doings, |

| ось, вони описані у книзі днів первосвященства його, з того часу, як став він первосвящеником після батька свого. | behold, these are written in the chronicles of his priesthood, from the time he was made high priest after his father. |
