Після смерти Саула, коли Давид повернувся після поразки амаликитян і пробув у Секелагу два дні,	And it came to pass after Saul was dead, that David returned from smiting Amalec, and David abode two days in Sekelac.

ось, на третій день приходить чоловік зі стану Саулового; одяг на ньому розідраний і порох на голові його. Прийшовши до Давида, він упав на землю і поклонився [йому].	And it came to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came from the camp, from the people of Saul, and his garments were rent, and earth was upon his head: and it came to pass when he went in to David, that he fell upon the earth, and did obeisance to him.

І сказав йому Давид: звідки ти прийшов? І сказав той: я втік зі стану ізраїльського.	And David said to him, Whence comest thou? and he said to him, I have escaped out of the camp of Israel.

І сказав йому Давид: що відбулося? розкажи мені. І той сказав: народ побіг з битви, і безліч народу впало і померло, і вмерли і Саул і син його Іонафан.	And David said to him, What is the matter? tell me. And he said, The people fled out of the battle, and many of the people have fallen and are dead, and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead.

І сказав Давид отрокові, який розповідав йому: як ти знаєш, що Саул і син його Іонафан померли?	And David said to the young man who brought him the tidings, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son are dead?

І сказав отрок, який розповідав йому: я випадково прийшов на гору Гелвуйську, і ось, Саул упав на свій спис, колісниці ж і вершники наздоганяли його.	And the young man that brought the tidings, said to him, I happened accidentally to be upon mount Gelbue; and, behold, Saul was leaning upon his spear, and, behold, the chariots and captains of horse pressed hard upon him.

Тоді він оглянувся назад і, побачивши мене, покликав мене.	And he looked behind him, and saw me, and called me; and I said, Behold, here am I.

І я сказав: ось я. Він сказав мені: хто ти? І я сказав йому: я — амаликитянин.	And he said to me, Who art thou? and I said, I am an Amalekite.

Тоді він сказав мені: підійди до мене й убий мене, бо туга смертна охопила мене, душа моя усе ще в мені.	And he said to me, Stand, I pray thee, over me, and slay me, for a dreadful darkness has come upon me, for all my life is in me.

І я підійшов до нього й убив його, бо знав, що він не буде живий після свого падіння; і взяв я [царський] вінець, який був на голові його, і зап’ястя, яке було на руці його, і приніс їх до господаря мого сюди.	So I stood over him and slew him, because I knew he would not live after he was fallen; and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was upon his arm, and I have brought them hither to my lord.

Тоді схопив Давид одяг свій і роздер його, також і всі люди, які були з ним, [роздерли одяг свій,]	And David laid hold of his garments, and rent them; and all the men who were with him rent their garments.

і ридали і плакали, і постилися до вечора за Саула і за сина його Іонафана, і за народ Господній і за дім Ізраїлів, що впали вони від меча.	And they lamented, and wept, and fasted till evening, for Saul and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of Juda, and for the house of Israel, because they were smitten with the sword.

І сказав Давид отроку, який розповідав йому: звідки ти? І сказав він: я — син прибульця амаликитянина.	And David said to the young man who brought the tidings to him, Whence art thou? and he said, I am the son of an Amalekite sojourner.

Тоді Давид сказав йому: як не побоявся ти підняти руку, щоб убити помазаника Господнього?	And David said to him, How was it thou wast not afraid to lift thy hand to destroy the anointed of the Lord?
15	15
І покликав Давид одного зі слуг і сказав йому: підійди, убий його.	And David called one of his young men, and said, Go and fall upon him: and he smote him, and he died.
16	16
І той убив його, і він помер. І сказав до нього Давид: кров твоя на голові твоїй, бо твої вуста свідчили проти тебе, коли ти говорив: я убив помазаника Господнього.	And David said to him, Thy blood be upon thine own head; for thy mouth has testified against thee, saying, I have slain the anointed of the Lord.

І оплакав Давид Саула і сина його Іонафана цією плачевною піснею,	And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son.
18	18
і повелів навчити синів Іудиних луку, як написано в книзі Праведного, і сказав:	And he gave orders to teach it the sons of Juda: behold, it is written in the book of Right.
19	19
краса твоя, о Ізраїлю, вражена на висотах твоїх! як упали сильні!	Set up a pillar, O Israel, for the slain that died upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!
20	20
Не розповідайте в Гефі, не сповіщайте на вулицях Аскалона, щоб не раділи дочки филистимлян, щоб не торжествували дочки необрізаних.	Tell it not in Geth, and tell it not as glad tidings in the streets of Ascalon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

Гори Гелвуйські! нехай [не зійде] ні роса, ні дощ на вас, і нехай не буде на вас полів з плодами, бо там уражений щит сильних, щит Саула, ніби не був він помазаний єлеєм.	Ye mountains of Gelbue, let not dew nor rain descend upon you, nor fields of first-fruits be upon you, for there the shield of the mighty ones has been grievously assailed; the shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

Без крови поранених, без жиру сильних лук Іонафана не повертався назад, і меч Саула не повертався марно.	From the blood of the slain, and from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan returned not empty; and the sword of Saul turned not back empty.

Саул та Іонафан, люб’язні і злагідні в житті своєму, не розлучилися й у смерті своїй; швидші за орлів, сильніші за левів вони були.	Saul and Jonathan, the beloved and the beautiful, were not divided: comely were they in their life, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, and they were stronger than lions.

Дочки ізраїльські! плачте за Саулом, який одягав вас у багряницю з прикрасами і діставав на одяг ваш золоті прикраси.	Daughters of Israel, weep for Saul, who clothed you with scarlet together with your adorning, who added golden ornaments to your apparel.

Як упали сильні на полі битви! Убитий Іонафан на висотах твоїх.	How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, even the slain ones upon thy high places!

Тужу за тобою, брате мій Іонафане; ти був дуже дорогим для мене; любов твоя була для мене вище за любов жіночу.	I am grieved for thee, my brother Jonathan; thou wast very lovely to me; thy love to me was wonderful beyond the love of women.

Як упали сильні, загинула зброя військова!	How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
Глава 2	Chapter 2

1	1
Після цього Давид запитав Господа, говорячи: чи йти мені в яке-небудь місто Іудине? І сказав йому Господь: іди. І сказав Давид: куди йти? І сказав Він: у Хеврон.	And it came to pass after this that David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up into one of the cities of Juda? and the Lord said to him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? and he said, To Chebron.

І пішов туди Давид і обидві дружини його, Ахиноама ізреелитянка й Авигея, колишня дружина Навала, кармилитянка.	And David went up thither to Chebron, he and both his wives, Achinaam the Jezraelitess, and Abigaia the wife of Nabal the Carmelite,

І людей, які були з ним, привів Давид, кожного з родиною його, й оселилися в місті Хевроні.	and the men that were with him, every one and his family; and they dwelt in the cities of Chebron.

І прийшли мужі Іудині і помазали там Давида на царство над домом Іудиним. І донесли Давиду, що жителі Іависа галаадського поховали Саула.	And the men of Judea come, and anoint David there to reign over the house of Juda; and they reported to David, saying, The men of Jabis of the country of Galaad have buried Saul.

І відправив Давид послів до жителів Іависа галаадського, сказати їм: благословенні ви у Господа за те, що зробили цю милість господареві своєму Саулу, [помазаникові Господньому,] і поховали його [та Іонафана, сина його],	And David sent messengers to the rulers of Jabis of the country of Galaad, and David said to them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, because ye have wrought this mercy toward your lord, even toward Saul the anointed of the Lord, and ye have buried him and Jonathan his son.

і нині нехай віддасть вам Господь милістю й істиною; і я зроблю вам благодіяння за те, що ви це зробили;	And now may the Lord deal in mercy and truth towards you: and I also will requite towards you this good deed, because ye have done this.

нині нехай зміцняться руки ваші, і будьте мужні; бо господар ваш Саул помер, а мене помазав дім Іудин царем над собою.	And now let your hands be made strong, and be valiant; for your master Saul is dead, and moreover the house of Juda have anointed me to be king over them.

Але Авенир, син Нирів, начальник війська Саулового, взяв Ієвосфея, сина Саулового, і привів його в Маханаїм,	But Abenner, the son of Ner, the commander-in-chief of Saul's army, took Jebosthe son of Saul, and brought him up from the camp to Manaem
9	9
і поставив його царем над Галаадом, і Ашуром, і Ізреелем, і Єфремом, і Веніаміном, і над усім Ізраїлем.	and made him king over the land of Galaad, and over Thasiri, and over Jezrael, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

Сорок років було Ієвосфею, синові Сауловому, коли він став царем над Ізраїлем, і царював два роки. Тільки дім Іудин залишився з Давидом.	Jebosthe, Saul's son was forty years old, when he reigned over Israel; and he reigned two years, but not over the house of Juda, who followed David.

Всього часу, в який Давид царював у Хевроні над домом Іудиним, було сім років і шість місяців.	And the days which David reigned in Chebron over the house of Juda were seven years and six months.

І вийшов Авенир, син Нирів, і слуги Ієвосфея, сина Саулового, з Маханаїма в Гаваон.	And Abenner the son of Ner went forth, and the servants of Jebosthe the son of Saul, from Manaem to Gabaon.

Вийшов і Іоав, син Саруї, зі слугами Давида, і зустрілися біля Гаваонського ставу, і засіли ті на одній стороні ставу, а ці на іншій стороні ставу.	And Joab the son of Saruia, and the servants of David, went forth from Chebron, and met them at the fountain of Gabaon, at the same place: and these sat down by the fountain on this side, and those by the fountain on that side.

І сказав Авенир Іоаву: нехай встануть юнаки і пограють перед нами. І сказав Іоав: нехай встануть.	And Abenner said to Joab, Let now the young men arise, and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise.
15	15
І встали і пішли кількістю дванадцять веніамитян з боку Ієвосфея, сина Саулового, і дванадцять зі слуг Давидових.	And there arose and passed over by number twelve of the children of Benjamin, belonging to Jebosthe the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David.
16	16
Вони схопили один одного за голову, встромили меч один одному в бік і упали разом. І було названо це місце Хелкаф-Хаццурим, що в Гаваоні.	And they seized every one the head of his neighbour with his hand, and his sword was thrust into the side of his neighbour, and they fall down together: and the name of that place was called The portion of the treacherous ones, which is in Gabaon.

І відбулася в той день найжорстокіша битва, і Авенир з людьми ізраїльськими був уражений слугами Давида.	And the battle was very severe on that day; and Abenner and the men of Israel were worsted before the servants of David.
18	18
І були там три сини Саруї: Іоав, і Авесса, й Асаїл. Асаїл же був легкий на ноги, як сарна в полі.	And there were there the three sons of Saruia, Joab, and Abessa, and Asael: and Asael was swift in his feet as a roe in the field.
19	19
І погнався Асаїл за Авениром і переслідував його, не ухиляючись ні праворуч, ні ліворуч від слідів Авенира.	And Asael followed after Abenner, and turned not to go to the right hand or to the left from following Abenner.
20	20
І оглянувся Авенир назад і сказав: чи ти це, Асаїл? Той сказав: я.	And Abenner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asael himself? and he said, I am.
21	21
І сказав йому Авенир: ухилися праворуч або ліворуч, і вибери собі одного зі слуг і візьми собі його озброєння. Але Асаїл не захотів відстати від нього.	And Abenner said to him, Turn thou to the right hand or to the left, and lay hold for thyself on one of the young men, and take to thyself his armour: but Asael would not turn back from following him.

І повторив Авенир ще, говорячи Асаїлу: відстань від мене, щоб я не повалив тебе на землю; тоді з яким лицем з’явлюся я до Іоава, брата твого?	And Abenner said yet again to Asael, Stand aloof from me, lest I smite thee to the ground? and how should I lift up my face to Joab?

[і де це буває? повернися до брата твого Іоава.] Але той не захотів відстати. Тоді Авенир, повернувши спис, уразив його в живіт; спис пройшов наскрізь його, і він упав там же і помер на місці. Усі, проходячи через те місце, де упав і помер Асаїл, зупинялися.	And what does this mean? return to Joab thy brother. But he would not stand aloof; and Abenner smites him with the hinder end of the spear on the loins, and the spear went out behind him, and he falls there and dies on the spot: and it came to pass that every one that came to the place where Asael fell and died, stood still.

І переслідували Іоав і Авесса Авенира. Сонце вже зайшло, коли вони прийшли до пагорба Амма, що проти Гиаха, на дорозі до пустелі Гаваонської.	And Joab and Abessa pursued after Abenner, and the sun went down: and they went as far as the hill of Amman, which is in the front of Gai, by the desert way of Gabaon.

І зібралися веніамитяни навколо Авенира і склали одне ополчення, і стали на вершині одного пагорба.	And the children of Benjamin who followed Abenner gather themselves together, and they formed themselves into one body, and stood on the top of a hill.

І звернувся Авенир до Іоава, і сказав: чи вічно буде пожирати меч? Чи ти не знаєш, що наслідки будуть сумні? І доки ти не скажеш людям, щоб вони перестали переслідувати братів своїх?	And Abenner called Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour perpetually? knowest thou not that it will be bitter at last? How long then wilt thou refuse to tell the people to turn from following our brethren?

І сказав Іоав: живий Бог! якби ти не говорив інше, то ще ранком перестали б люди переслідувати братів своїх.	And Joab said, As the Lord lives, if thou hadst not spoken, even from the morning the people had gone up every one from following his brother.

І засурмив Іоав трубою, і зупинився весь народ, і не переслідували більше ізраїльтян; битва припинилася.	And Joab sounded the trumpet, and all the people departed, and did not pursue after Israel, and did not fight any longer.

Авенир же і люди його йшли рівниною всю ту ніч і перейшли Йордан, і пройшли весь Битрон, і прийшли в Маханаїм.	And Abenner and his men departed at evening, and went all that night, and crossed over Jordan, and went along the whole adjacent country, and they come to the camp.
30	30
І повернувся Іоав від переслідування Авенира і зібрав весь народ, і бракувало зі слуг Давидових дев’ятнадцять чоловік, крім Асаїла.	And Joab returned from following Abenner, and he assembled all the people, and there were missing of the people of David, nineteen men, and Asael.

Слуги ж Давидові вразили веніамитян і людей Авенирових; упало їх триста шістдесят чоловік.	And the servants of David smote of the children of Benjamin, of the men of Abenner, three hundred and sixty men belonging to him.

І взяли Асаїла і поховали його в гробі батька його, що у Вифлеємі. Іоав же з людьми своїми йшов усю ніч і на світанку прибув у Хеврон.	And they take up Asael, and bury him in the tomb of his father in Bethleem. And Joab and the men with him went all the night, and the morning rose upon them in Chebron.
Глава 3	Chapter 3

1	1
І був довгочасний розбрат між домом Сауловим і домом Давидовим. Давид все більше і більше дужчав, а дім Саулів більше і більше слабшав.	And there was war for a long time between the house of Saul and the house of David; and the house of David grew continually stronger; but the house of Saul grew continually weaker.
2	2
І народилися у Давида [шість] синів у Хевроні. Первісток його був Амнон від Ахиноами ізреелитянки,	And sons were born to David in Chebron: and his first-born was Amnon the son of Achinoom the Jezraelitess.
3	3
а другий [син] його — Далуя від Авигеї, колишньої дружини Навала, кармилитянки; третій — Авессалом, син Маахи, дочки Фалмая, царя Гессурського;	And his second son was Daluia, the son of Abigaia the Carmelitess; and the third, Abessalom the son of Maacha the daughter of Tholmi the king of Gessir.

четвертий — Адонія, син Аггифи; п’ятий — Сафатія, син Авитали;	And the fourth was Ornia, the son of Aggith, and the fifth was Saphatia, the son of Abital.

шостий — Ієфераам від Егли, дружини Давидової. Вони народилися у Давида у Хевроні.	And the sixth was Jetheraam, the son of Ægal the wife of David. These were born to David in Chebron.

Коли був розбрат між домом Саула і домом Давида, то Авенир підтримував дім Саула.	And it came to pass while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abenner was governing the house of Saul.

У Саула була наложниця, на ім’я Рицпа, дочка Айя [і ввійшов до неї Авенир]. І сказав [Ієвосфей] Авениру: навіщо ти ввійшов до наложниці батька мого?	And Saul had a concubine, Respha, the daughter of Jol; and Jebosthe the son of Saul said to Abenner, Why hast thou gone in to my father's concubine?

Авенир же сильно розгнівався на слова Ієвосфея і сказав: хіба я — собача голова? Я проти Іуди зробив нині милість дому Саула, батька твого, братам його і друзям його, і не видав тебе в руки Давида, а ти звинувачуєш нині мене у гріху через жінку.	And Abenner was very angry with Jebosthe for this saying; and Abenner said to him, Am I a dog's head? I have this day wrought kindness with the house of Saul thy father, and with his brethren and friends, and have not gone over to the house of David, and dost thou this day seek a charge against me concerning injury to a woman?

Те і те нехай зробить Бог Авениру і ще більше зробить йому! Як клявся Господь Давиду, так і зроблю йому [в цей день]:	God do thus and more also to Abenner, if as the Lord swore to David, so do I not to him this day;
10	10
відніму царство від дома Саулового і поставлю престіл Давида над Ізраїлем і над Іудою, від Дана до Вирсавії.	to take away the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to raise up the throne of David over Israel and over Juda from Dan to Bersabee.

І не міг Ієвосфей заперечити Авениру, бо боявся його.	And Jebosthe could not any longer answer Abenner a word, because he feared him.
12	12
І послав Авенир від себе послів до Давида [у Хеврон, де він знаходився], сказати: чия ця земля? І ще сказати: уклади союз зі мною, і рука моя буде з тобою, щоб навернути до тебе весь народ ізраїльський.	And Abenner sent messengers to David to Thælam where he was, immediately, saying, Make thy covenant with me, and, behold, my hand is with thee to bring back to thee all the house of Israel.
13	13
І сказав [Давид]: добре, я укладу союз з тобою, тільки прошу тебе про одне, а саме — ти не побачиш лиця мого, якщо не приведеш із собою Мелхоли, дочки Саула, коли прийдеш побачитися зі мною.	And David said, With a good will I will make with thee a covenant: only I demand one condition of thee, saying, Thou shalt not see my face, unless thou bring Melchol the daughter of Saul, when thou comest to see my face.

І відправив Давид послів до Ієвосфея, сина Саулового, сказати: віддай дружину мою Мелхолу, яку я одержав за сто краєобрізань филистимських.	And David sent messengers to Jebosthe the son of Saul, saying, Restore me my wife Melchol, whom I took for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.

І послав Ієвосфей і взяв її від чоловіка, від Фалтія, сина Лаїшевого.	And Jebosthe sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Selle.
16	16
Пішов з нею і чоловік її і з плачем проводжав її до Бахурима; але Авенир сказав йому: йди назад. І він повернувся.	And her husband went with her weeping behind her as far as Barakim. And Abenner said to him, Go, return; and he returned.
17	17
І звернувся Авенир до старійшин ізраїльських, говорячи: і вчора і третього дня ви бажали, щоб Давид був царем над вами,	And Abenner spoke to the elders of Israel, saying, In former days ye sought David to reign over you;
18	18
тепер зробіть це, бо Господь сказав Давиду: «рукою раба Мого Давида Я спасу народ Мій Ізраїля від руки филистимлян і від руки усіх ворогів його».	and now perform it: for the Lord has spoken concerning David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save Israel out of the hand of all their enemies.

Те саме говорив Авенир і веніамитянам. І пішов Авенир у Хеврон, щоб переказати Давиду все, чого бажав Ізраїль і весь дім Веніамінів.	And Abenner spoke in the ears of Benjamin: and Abenner went to speak in the ears of David at Chebron, all that seemed good in the eyes of Israel and in the eyes of the house of Benjamin.

І прийшов Авенир до Давида в Хеврон і з ним двадцять чоловік, і зробив Давид бенкет для Авенира і людей, які були з ним.	And Abenner came to David to Chebron, and with him twenty men: and David made for Abenner and his men with him a banquet of wine.
21	21
І сказав Авенир Давиду: я встану і піду і зберу до господаря мого царя весь народ ізраїльський, і вони вступлять у завіт з тобою, і будеш царювати над усіма, як бажає душа твоя. І відпустив Давид Авенира, і він пішов з миром.	And Abenner said to David, I will arise now, and go, and gather to my lord the king all Israel; and I will make with him a covenant, and thou shalt reign over all whom thy soul desires. And David sent away Abenner, and he departed in peace.

І ось, слуги Давидові з Іоавом прийшли з походу і принесли із собою багато здобичі; але Авенира вже не було з Давидом у Хевроні, бо Давид відпустив його, і він пішов з миром.	And, behold, the servants of David and Joab arrived from their expedition, and they brought much spoil with them: and Abenner was not with David in Chebron, because he had sent him away, and he had departed in peace.

Коли Іоав і усе військо, що ходило з ним, прийшли, то Іоаву розповіли: приходив Авенир, син Нирів, до царя, і той відпустив його, і він пішов з миром.	And Joab and all his army came, and it was reported to Joab, saying, Abenner the son of Ner is come to David, and David has let him go, and he has departed in peace.

І прийшов Іоав до царя і сказав: що ти зробив? Ось, приходив до тебе Авенир; навіщо ти відпустив його, і він пішов?	And Joab went in to the king, and said, What is this that thou hast done? behold, Abenner came to thee; and why hast thou let him go, and he has departed in peace?

Ти знаєш Авенира, сина Нирового: він приходив обманути тебе, довідатися про вихід твій і вхід твій і розвідати все, що ти робиш.	Knowest thou not the mischief of Abenner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all things that thou doest?

І вийшов Іоав від Давида і послав гінців слідом за Авениром; і повернули вони його від колодязя Сиру, без відома Давида.	And Joab returned from David, and sent messengers to Abenner after him; and they bring him back from the well of Seïram: but David knew it not.
27	27
Коли Авенир повернувся в Хеврон, то Іоав відвів його усередину воріт, начебто для того, щоб поговорити з ним таємно, і там уразив його в живіт. І помер Авенир за кров Асаїла, брата Іоавового.	And he brought back Abenner to Chebron, and Joab caused him to turn aside from the gate to speak to him, laying wait for him: and he smote him there in the loins, and he died for the blood of Asael the brother of Joab.

І почув опісля Давид про це і сказав: невинний я і царство моє повік перед Господом у крові Авенира, сина Нирового;	And David heard of it afterwards, and said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the Lord even for ever of the blood of Abenner the son of Ner.

нехай упаде вона на голову Іоава і на весь дім батька його; нехай ніколи не залишається дім Іоава без сіменеточивого, або прокаженого, або того, хто спирається на посох, або того, хто падає від меча, або того, хто потребує хліба.	Let it fall upon the head of Joab, and upon all the house of his father; and let there not be wanting of the house of Joab one that has an issue, or a leper, or that leans on a staff, or that falls by the sword, or that wants bread.

And David said to Joab and to all the people with him, Rend your garments, and gird yourselves with sackcloth, and lament before Abenner. And king David followed the bier.

Коли погребали Авенира в Хевроні, то цар голосно плакав над гробом Авенира; плакав і весь народ.	And they bury Abenner in Chebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at his tomb, and all the people wept for Abenner.

І оплакав цар Авенира, говорячи: чи смертю підлого помирати Авениру?	And the king mourned over Abenner, and said, Shall Abenner die according to the death of Nabal?

Руки твої не були зв’язані, і ноги твої не в кайданах, і ти упав, як падають від розбійників. І весь народ став ще більше плакати над ним.	Thy hands were not bound, and thy feet were not put in fetters: one brought thee not near as Nabal; thou didst fall before children of iniquity.

І прийшов весь народ запропонувати Давиду хліба, коли ще тривав день; але Давид поклявся, говорячи: те і те нехай зробить зі мною Бог і ще більше зробить, якщо я до заходу сонця споживу хліба або чого-небудь.	And all the people assembled to weep for him. And all the people came to cause David to eat bread while it was yet day: and David swore, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if I eat bread or any thing else before the sun goes down.

І весь народ довідався про це, і сподобалося йому це, як і все, що робив цар, подобалося всьому народові.	And all the people took notice, and all things that the king did before the people were pleasing in their sight.

І дізнався весь народ і весь Ізраїль у той день, що не від царя сталося умертвлення Авенира, сина Нирового.	So all the people and all Israel perceived in that day, that it was not of the king to slay Abenner the son of Ner.

І сказав цар слугам своїм: чи знаєте, що вождь і великий муж упав у цей день в Ізраїлі?	And the king said to his servants, Know ye not that a great prince is this day fallen in Israel?

And that I am this day a mere kinsman of his, and as it were a subject; but these men the sons of Saruia are too hard for me: the Lord reward the evil-doer according to his wickedness.
Глава 4	Chapter 4

І почув [Ієвосфей,] син Саулів, що помер Авенир у Хевроні, й опустилися руки його, і весь Ізраїль збентежився.	And Jebosthe the son of Saul heard that Abenner the son of Ner had died in Chebron; and his hands were paralysed, and all the men of Israel grew faint.

У [Ієвосфея,] сина Саулового, два було начальники війська; ім’я одного — Баана й ім’я другого — Рихав, сини Реммона беерофянина, з нащадків Веніамінових, бо і Беероф зараховувався до Веніаміна.	And Jebosthe the son of Saul had two men that were captains of bands: the name of the one was Baana, and the name of the other Rechab, sons of Remmon the Berothite of the children of Benjamin; for Beroth was reckoned to the children of Benjamin.

І втекли беерофяни в Гиффаїм і залишилися там прибульцями до цього дня.	And the Berothites ran away to Gethaim, and were sojourners there until this day.

В Іонафана, сина Саулового, був син кульгавий. П’ять років було йому, коли прийшла звістка про Саула та Іонафана з Ізрееля, і нянька, узявши його, побігла. І коли вона бігла поспішно, то він упав, і зробився кульгавим. Ім’я його Мемфивосфей.	And Jonathan Saul's son had a son lame of his feet, five years old, and he was in the way when the news of Saul and Jonathan his son came from Jezrael, and his nurse took him up, and fled; and it came to pass as he hasted and retreated, that he fell, and was lamed. And his name was Memphibosthe.

And, behold, the porter of the house winnowed wheat, and he slumbered and slept: and the brothers Rechab and Baana went privily into the house:

І відповів Давид Рихаву і Баані, братові його, синам Реммона беерофянина, і сказав їм: живий Господь, Який визволив душу мою від усякої скорботи!	And David answered Rechab and Baana his brother, the sons of Remmon the Berothite, and said to them, As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all affliction;

And David commanded his young men, and they slay them, and cut off their hands and their feet; and they hung them up at the fountain in Chebron: and they buried the head of Jebosthe in the tomb of Abenner the son of Ner.
Глава 5	Chapter 5

І прийшли всі коліна Ізраїлеві до Давида в Хеврон і сказали: ось, ми — кості твої і плоть твоя;	And all the tribes of Israel come to David to Chebron, and they said to him, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

І прийшли усі старійшини Ізраїля до царя в Хеврон, і уклав з ними цар Давид завіт у Хевроні перед Господом; і помазали Давида на царя над [усім] Ізраїлем.	And all the elders of Israel come to the king to Chebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Chebron before the Lord; and they anoint David king over all Israel.

Тридцять років було Давиду, коли він став царем; царював сорок років.	David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

У Хевроні царював над Іудою сім років і шість місяців, і в Єрусалимі царював тридцять три роки над усім Ізраїлем та Іудою.	Seven years and six months he reigned in Chebron over Juda, and thirty-three years he reigned over all Israel and Juda in Jerusalem.

І пішов цар і люди його на Єрусалим проти ієвусеїв, жителів тієї країни; але вони говорили Давиду: «ти не ввійдеш сюди; тебе відженуть сліпі й кульгаві», — це значило: «не ввійде сюди Давид».	And David and his men departed to Jerusalem, to the Jebusite that inhabited the land: and it was said to David, Thou shalt not come in hither: for the blind and the lame withstood him, saying, David shall not come in hither.

Але Давид узяв фортецю Сион: це — місто Давидове.	And David took first the hold of Sion: this is the city of David.

І сказав Давид у той день: усякий, убиваючи ієвусеїв, нехай уражує списом і кульгавих і сліпих, які ненавидять душу Давида. Тому і говориться: сліпий і кульгавий не ввійде в дім [Господній].	And David said on that day, Every one that smites the Jebusite, let him attack with the dagger both the lame and the blind, and those that hate the soul of David. Therefore they say, The lame and the blind shall not enter into the house of the Lord.

І оселився Давид у фортеці, і назвав її містом Давидовим, і оббудував навкруги від Милло й усередині.	And David dwelt in the hold, and it was called the city of David, and he built the city itself round about from the citadel, and he built his own house.

І процвітав Давид і підносився, і Господь Бог Саваоф був з ним.	And David advanced and became great, and the Lord Almighty was with him.
11	11
І прислав Хирам, цар Тирський, послів до Давида і кедрові дерева, і теслярів і каменярів, і вони побудували дім Давиду.	And Chiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar wood, and carpenters, and stone-masons: and they built a house for David.
12	12
І зрозумів Давид, що Господь утвердив його царем над Ізраїлем і що підніс царство його заради народу Свого Ізраїля.	And David knew that the Lord had prepared him to be king over Israel, and that his kingdom was exalted for the sake of his people Israel.

І взяв Давид ще наложниць і дружин з Єрусалима, після того, як прийшов з Хеврона.	And David took again wives and concubines out of Jerusalem, after he came from Chebron: and David had still more sons and daughters born to him.

І народилися ще в Давида сини і дочки. І ось імена народжених у нього в Єрусалимі: Самус, і Совав, і Нафан, і Соломон,	And these are the names of those that were born to him in Jerusalem; Sammus, and Sobab, and Nathan, and Solomon.

Коли филистимляни почули, що Давида помазали на царство над Ізраїлем, то піднялися усі филистимляни шукати Давида. І почув Давид і пішов у фортецю.	And the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over Israel; and all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the strong hold.

А филистимляни прийшли і розташувалися в долині Рефаїм.	And the Philistines came, and assembled in the valley of the giants.
19	19
І запитав Давид Господа, говорячи: чи йти мені проти филистимлян? чи віддаси їх у руки мої? І сказав Господь Давиду: йди, бо Я видам филистимлян у руки твої.	And David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up against the Philistines? and wilt thou deliver them into my hands? and the Lord said to David, Go up, for I will surely deliver the Philistines into thine hands.

І пішов Давид у Ваал-Перацим і вразив їх там, і сказав Давид: Господь розніс ворогів моїх переді мною, як розносить вода. Тому і місцю тому дано ім’я Ваал-Перацим.	And David came from Upper Breaches, and smote the Philistines there: and David said, The Lord has destroyed the hostile Philistines before me, as water is dispersed; therefore the name of that place was called Over Breaches.

І залишили там [филистимляни] ідолів своїх, а Давид з людьми своїми взяв їх [і повелів спалити їх у вогні].	And they leave there their gods, and David and his men with him took them.

І прийшли знову филистимляни і розташувалися в долині Рефаїм.	And the Philistines came up yet again, and assembled in the valley of Giants.

І запитав Давид Господа, [чи йти мені проти филистимлян, і чи віддаси їх у руки мої?] І Він відповів йому: не виходь назустріч їм, а зайди їм з тилу і йди до них з боку шовковичного гаю;	And David enquired of the Lord: and the Lord said, Thou shalt not go up to meet them: turn from them, and thou shalt meet them near the place of weeping.

і коли почуєш шум, ніби хтось іде по вершинах шовковичних дерев, то рушай, бо тоді пішов Господь перед тобою, щоб уразити військо филистимське.	And it shall come to pass when thou hearest the sound of a clashing together from the grove of weeping, then thou shalt go down to them, for then the Lord shall go forth before thee to make havoc in the battle with the Philistines.

І зробив Давид, як повелів йому Господь, і вразив филистимлян від Гаваї до Газера.	And David did as the Lord commanded him, and smote the Philistines from Gabaon as far as the land of Gazera.
Глава 6	Chapter 6

1	1
І зібрав знову Давид усіх добірних людей з Ізраїля, тридцять тисяч^*.	And David again gathered all the young men of Israel, about seventy thousand.
2	2
І встав і пішов Давид і весь народ, який був з ним з Ваала Іудиного, щоб перенести звідти ковчег Божий, на якому нарікається ім’я Господа Саваофа, Який сидить на херувимах.	And David arose, and went, he and all the people that were with him, and some of the rulers of Juda, on an expedition to a distant place, to bring back thence the ark of God, on which the name of the Lord of Hosts who dwells between the cherubs upon it is called.

І поставили ковчег Божий на нову колісницю і вивезли його з дому Аминадава, що на пагорбі. Сини ж Аминадава, Оза й Ахио, вели нову колісницю.	And they put the ark of the Lord on a new waggon, and took it out of the house of Aminadab who lived on the hill: and Oza and his brethren the sons of Aminadab drove the waggon with the ark.

І повезли її з ковчегом Божим з дому Аминадава, що на пагорбі; і Ахио йшов перед ковчегом [Господнім].	And his brethren went before the ark.

А Давид і всі сини Ізраїлеві грали перед Господом на різних музичних інструментах з кипарисового дерева, і на цитрах, і на псалтирях, і на тимпанах, і на систрах, і на кимвалах.	And David and the children of Israel were playing before the Lord on well-tuned instruments mightily, and with songs, and with harps, and with lutes, and with drums, and with cymbals, and with pipes.

І коли дійшли до току Нахонового, Оза простяг руку свою до ковчега Божого [щоб притримати його] і взявся за нього, бо воли нахилили його.	And they come as far as the threshing floor of Nachor: and Oza reached forth his hand to the ark of God to keep it steady, and took hold of it; for the ox shook it out of its place.

Але Господь прогнівався на Озу, і вразив його Бог там же за завзятість, і помер він там біля ковчега Божого.	And the Lord was very angry with Oza; and God smote him there: and he died there by the ark of the Lord before God.

І засмутився Давид, що Господь уразив Озу. Місце це і донині називається: «ураження Ози».	And David was dispirited because the Lord made a breach upon Oza; and that place was called the breach of Oza until this day.

І убоявся Давид у той день Господа і сказав: як увійти до мене ковчегу Господньому?	And David feared the Lord in that day, saying, How shall the ark of the Lord come in to me?
10	10
І не захотів Давид везти ковчег Господній до себе, в місто Давидове, а завернув його в дім Аведдара гефянина.	And David would not bring in the ark of the covenant of the Lord to himself into the city of David: and David turned it aside into the house of Abeddara the Gethite.
11	11
І залишався ковчег Господній у домі Аведдара гефянина три місяці, і благословив Господь Аведдара і весь дім його.	And the ark of the Lord lodged in the house of Abeddara the Gethite three months, and the Lord blessed all the house of Abeddara, and all his possessions.

Коли донесли царю Давиду, говорячи: «Господь благословив дім Аведдара й усе, що було в нього, заради ковчега Божого», то пішов Давид і урочисто переніс ковчег Божий з дому Аведдара в місто Давидове.	And it was reported to king David, saying, The Lord has blessed the house of Abeddara, and all that he has, because of the ark of the Lord. And David went, and brought up the ark of the Lord from the house of Abeddara to the city of David with gladness.

І коли ті, що несли ковчег Господній, проходили по шість кроків, він приносив у жертву тельця й барана.	And there were with him bearing the ark seven bands, and for a sacrifice a calf and lambs.
14	14
Давид скакав із усієї сили перед Господом; одягнений же був Давид у лляний ефод.	And David sounded with well-tuned instruments before the Lord, and David was clothed with a fine long robe.
15	15
Так Давид і весь дім Ізраїлів несли ковчег Господній з вигуками і трубними звуками.	And David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of a trumpet.
16	16
Коли входив ковчег Господній у місто Давидове, Мелхола, дочка Саула, дивилася у вікно і, побачивши царя Давида, що скакає і танцює перед Господом, принизила його в серці своєму.	And it came to pass as the ark arrived at the city of David, that Melchol the daughter of Saul looked through the window, and saw king David dancing and playing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.

І принесли ковчег Господній і поставили його на своєму місці посеред скинії, яку спорудив для нього Давид; і приніс Давид всепалення перед Господом і жертви мирні.	And they bring the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle which David pitched for it: and David offered whole-burnt-offerings before the Lord, and peace-offerings.

Коли Давид закінчив приношення всепалень і жертв мирних, то благословив він народ ім’ям Господа Саваофа;	And David made an end of offering the whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Hosts.

і роздав усьому народові, усій безлічі ізраїльтян [від Дана навіть до Вирсавії], як чоловікам, так і жінкам, по одному хлібу і по шматку смаженого м’яса і по одному коржу кожному. І пішов весь народ, кожен у дім свій.	And he distributed to all the people, even to all the host of Israel from Dan to Bersabee, both men and women, to every one a cake of bread, and a joint of meat, and a cake from the frying-pan: and all the people departed every one to his home.

Коли Давид повернувся, щоб благословити дім свій, то Мелхола, дочка Саула, вийшла до нього назустріч, [і вітала його] і сказала: як відзначився сьогодні цар Ізраїлів, оголившись сьогодні перед очима рабинь рабів своїх, як оголюється яка-небудь пуста людина!	And David returned to bless his house. And Melchol the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and saluted him, and said, How was the king of Israel glorified to-day, who was to-day uncovered in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the dancers wantonly uncovers himself!

І сказав Давид Мелхолі: перед Господом [танцювати буду. І благословенний Господь], Який віддав перевагу мені перед батьком твоїм і всім домом його, утвердивши мене вождем народу Господнього, Ізраїля; перед Господом грати і танцювати буду;	And David said to Melchol, I will dance before the Lord. Blessed be the Lord who chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to make me head over his people, even over Israel: therefore I will play, and dance before the Lord.

і я ще більше принижусь, і зроблюся ще мізернішим в очах моїх, і перед служницями, про яких ти говориш, я буду славний.	And I will again uncover myself thus, and I will be vile in thine eyes, and with the maid-servants by whom thou saidst that I was not had in honour.

Глава 7	Chapter 7

1	1
Коли цар жив у домі своєму, і Господь заспокоїв його від усіх навколишніх ворогів його,	And it came to pass when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him an inheritance on every side free from all his enemies round about him;

тоді сказав цар пророку Нафану: ось, я живу в домі кедровому, а ковчег Божий знаходиться під наметом.	that the king said to Nathan the prophet, Behold now, I live in a house of cedar, and the ark of the Lord dwells in the midst of a tent.

І сказав Нафан царю: усе, що в тебе на серці, йди, роби; бо Господь з тобою.	And Nathan said to the king, Go and do all that is in thine heart, for the Lord is with thee.

Але в ту ж ніч було слово Господа до Нафана:	And it came to pass in that night, that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying,

йди, скажи рабові Моєму Давиду: так говорить Господь: чи ти побудуєш Мені дім для Мого перебування,	Go, and say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord, Thou shalt not build me a house for me to dwell in.

коли Я не жив у домі з того часу, як вивів синів Ізраїлевих з Єгипту, і до цього дня, але переходив у наметі й у скинії?	For I have not dwelt in a house from the day that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt to this day, but I have been walking in a lodge and in a tent,

Де Я не ходив із усіма синами Ізраїля, чи говорив Я хоча слово якому-небудь з колін, якому Я призначив пасти народ Мій Ізраїля: «чому не побудуєте Мені кедрового дому»?	wheresoever I went with all Israel. Have I ever spoken to any of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to tend my people Israel, saying, Why have ye not built me a house of cedar?

І тепер так скажи рабові Моєму Давиду: так говорить Господь Саваоф: Я взяв тебе від отари овець, щоб ти був вождем народу Мого, Ізраїля;	And now thus shalt thou say to my servant David, Thus says the Lord Almighty, I took thee from the sheep-cote, that thou shouldest be a prince over my people, over Israel.

і був з тобою скрізь, куди не ходив ти, і знищив усіх ворогів твоїх перед лицем твоїм, і зробив ім’я твоє великим, як ім’я великих на землі.	And I was with thee wheresoever thou wentest, and I destroyed all thine enemies before thee, and I made thee renowned according to the renown of the great ones on the earth.

І Я влаштую місце для народу Мого, для Ізраїля, й укоріню його, і буде він спокійно жити на місці своєму, і не буде тривожитися більше, і люди нечестиві не стануть більше тіснити його, як колись,	And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell by themselves, and shall be no more distressed; and the son of iniquity shall no more afflict them, as he has done from the beginning,

з того часу, як Я поставив суддів над народом Моїм, Ізраїлем; і Я заспокою тебе від усіх ворогів твоїх. І Господь сповіщає тобі, що Він влаштує тобі дім.	from the days when I appointed judges over my people Israel: and I will give thee rest from all thine enemies, and the Lord will tell thee that thou shalt build a house to him.

Коли ж сповняться дні твої, і ти спочинеш з батьками твоїми, то Я поставлю після тебе сíм’я твоє, яке народиться від стегон твоїх, і зміцню царство його.	And it shall come to pass when thy days shall have been fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, even thine own issue, and I will establish his kingdom.

Він побудує дім імені Моєму, і Я утверджу престіл царства його повіки.	He shall build for me a house to my name, and I will set up his throne even for ever.
14	14
Я буду йому батьком, і він буде Мені сином; і якщо він згрішить, Я покараю його жезлом мужів і ударами синів людських;	I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. And when he happens to transgress, then will I chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men.

але милости Моєї не відніму від нього, як Я відняв від Саула, якого Я відкинув перед лицем твоїм.	But my mercy I will not take from him, as I took it from those whom I removed from my presence.

І буде непохитний дім твій і царство твоє навіки перед лицем Моїм, і престіл твій устоїть повіки.	And his house shall be made sure, and his kingdom for ever before me, and his throne shall be set up for ever.

Усі ці слова і все це видіння Нафан переказав Давиду.	According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

І цього ще мало здалося в очах Твоїх, Господи мій, Господи; але Ти звістив ще про дім раба Твого в майбутньому. Це вже по-людськи. Господи мій, Господи!	Whereas I was very little before thee, O Lord, my Lord, yet thou spokest concerning the house of thy servant for a long time to come. And is this the law of man, O Lord, my Lord?

Що ще може сказати Тобі Давид? Ти знаєш раба Твого, Господи мій, Господи!	And what shall David yet say to thee? and now thou knowest thy servant, O Lord, my Lord.

Заради слова Твого і за серцем Твоїм Ти робиш це, відкриваючи все це велике рабові Твоєму.	And thou hast wrought for thy servant's sake, and according to thy heart thou hast wrought all this greatness, to make it known to thy servant,

В усьому великий Ти, Господи мій, Господи! бо немає подібного Тобі і немає Бога, крім Тебе, в усьому, що чули ми своїми вухами.	that he may magnify thee, O my Lord; for there is no one like thee, and there is no God but thou among all of whom we have heard with our ears.

І хто подібний до народу Твого, Ізраїля, єдиного народу на Землі, заради якого приходив Бог, щоб придбати його Собі за народ і прославити Своє ім’я і звершити велике і страшне перед народом Твоїм, який Ти придбав Собі від єгиптян, вигнавши народи і богів їхніх?	And what other nation in the earth is as thy people Israel? whereas God was his guide, to redeem for himself a people to make thee a name, to do mightily and nobly, so that thou shouldest cast out nations and their tabernacles from the presence of thy people, whom thou didst redeem for thyself out of Egypt?

І Ти укріпив за Собою народ Твій, Ізраїля, як власний народ, навіки, і Ти, Господи, зробився його Богом.	And thou hast prepared for thyself thy people Israel to be a people for ever, and thou, Lord, art become their God.

І нині, Господи Боже, утверди повіки слово, яке промовив Ти про раба Твого і про дім його, і виконай те, що Ти промовив.	And now, O my Lord, the Almighty Lord God of Israel, confirm the word for ever which thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and his house: and now as thou hast said,

І нехай звеличиться ім’я Твоє повіки, щоб говорили: «Господь Саваоф — Бог над Ізраїлем». І дім раба Твого Давида нехай буде міцним перед лицем Твоїм.	Let thy name be magnified for ever.

Almighty Lord God of Israel, thou hast uncovered the ear of thy servant, saying, I will build thee a house: therefore thy servant has found in his heart to pray this prayer to thee.

Отже, Господи мій, Господи! Ти Бог, і слова Твої непорушні, і Ти звістив рабові Твоєму таке благо!	And now, O Lord my Lord, thou art God; and thy words will be true, and thou hast spoken these good things concerning thy servant.

І нині почни і благослови дім раба Твого, щоб він був вічно перед лицем Твоїм, бо Ти, Господи мій, Господи, звістив це, і благословенням Твоїм стане дім раба Твого благословенним, [щоб бути йому перед Тобою] повіки.	And now begin and bless the house of thy servant, that it may continue for ever before thee; for thou, O Lord, my Lord, hast spoken, and the house of thy servant shall be blessed with thy blessing so as to continue for ever.
Глава 8	Chapter 8

1	1
Після цього Давид уразив филистимлян і упокорив їх, і взяв Давид Мефег-Гаамма з рук филистимлян.	And it came to pass after this, that David smote the Philistines, and put them to flight, and David took the tribute from out of the hand of the Philistines.
2	2
І вразив моавитян і зміряв їх мотузкою, поклавши їх на землю; і відміряв дві мотузки на умертвлення, а одну мотузку на залишення в живих. І зробилися моавитяни у Давида рабами, які платять данину.	And David smote Moab, and measured them out with lines, having laid them down on the ground: and there were two lines for slaying, and two lines he kept alive: and Moab became servants to David, yielding tribute.

І вразив Давид Адраазара, сина Реховового, царя Сувського, коли той ішов, щоб відновити своє панування при ріці [Євфраті];	And David smote Adraazar the son of Raab king of Suba, as he went to extend his power to the river Euphrates.

і взяв Давид у нього тисячу сімсот вершників^* і двадцять тисяч чоловік піших, і підрізав Давид жили у всіх коней колісничних, залишивши [собі] з них для ста колісниць.	And David took a thousand of his chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: and David houghed all his chariot horses, and he reserved to himself a hundred chariots.

І прийшли сирійці дамаські на допомогу Адраазару, царю Сувському; але Давид уразив двадцять дві тисячі чоловік сирійців.	And Syria of Damascus comes to help Adraazar king of Suba, and David smote twenty-two thousand men belonging to the Syrian.

І поставив Давид охоронні війська в Сирії Дамаській, і стали сирійці у Давида рабами, які платять данину. І зберігав Господь Давида скрізь, куди тільки він ходив.	And David placed a garrison in Syria near Damascus, and the Syrians became servants and tributaries to David: and the Lord preserved David whithersoever he went.

І взяв Давид золоті щити, що були у рабів Адраазара, і приніс їх в Єрусалим. [Їх узяв потім Сусаким, цар Єгипетський, під час навали своєї на Єрусалим, у дні Ровоама, сина Соломонового.]	And David took the golden bracelets which were on the servants of Adraazar king of Suba, and brought them to Jerusalem. And Susakim king of Egypt took them, when he went up to Jerusalem in the days of Roboam son of Solomon.

А в Бефі і Берофі, містах Адраазарових, узяв цар Давид дуже багато міді, [з якої Соломон улаштував мідне море і стовпи, й умивальниці і всі сосуди].	And king David took from Metebac, and from the choice cities of Adraazar, very much brass: with that Solomon made the brazen sea, and the pillars, and the lavers, and all the furniture.

І почув Фой, цар Імафа, що Давид уразив усе військо Адраазарове,	And Thoü the king of Hemath heard that David had smitten all the host of Adraazar.

і послав Фой Іорама, сина свого, до царя Давида, вітати його і дякувати йому за те, що він воював з Адраазаром і вразив його; тому що Адраазар вів війни з Фоєм. У руках же Іорама були сосуди срібні, золоті й мідні.	And Thoü sent Jedduram his son to king David, to ask him of his welfare, and to congratulate him on his fighting against Adraazar and smiting him, for he was an enemy to Adraazar: and in his hands were vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass.

І зробив Давид собі ім’я, повертаючись з ураження вісімнадцяти тисяч сирійців у долині Солоній.	And David made himself a name: and when he returned he smote Idumea in Gebelem to the number of eighteen thousand.

І поставив він охоронні війська в Ідумеї; у всій Ідумеї поставив охоронні війська, і всі ідумеяни були рабами Давида. І зберігав Господь Давида скрізь, куди тільки він ходив.	And he set garrisons in Idumea, even in all Idumea: and all the Idumeans were servants to the king. And the Lord preserved David wherever he went.
15	15
І царював Давид над усім Ізраїлем, і чинив Давид суд і правду над усім народом своїм.	And David reigned over all Israel: and David wrought judgment and justice over all his people.
16	16
Іоав же, син Саруї, був начальником війська; й Іосафат, син Ахилуда, — діловодом;	And Joab the son of Saruia was over the host; and Josaphat the son of Achilud was keeper of the records.
17	17
Садок, син Ахитува, й Ахимелех, син Авиафара, — священиками, Сераія — писарем;	And Sadoc the son of Achitob, and Achimelech son of Abiathar, were priests; and Sasa was the scribe,

і Ванея, син Іодая, — начальником над хелефеями і фелефеями, і сини Давида — першими при дворі.	and Banæas son of Jodaë was councillor, and the Chelethite and the Phelethite, and the sons of David, were princes of the court.
Глава 9	Chapter 9

1	1
І сказав Давид: чи не залишився ще хто-небудь з дому Саулового? я зробив би йому милість заради Іонафана.	And David said, Is there yet any one left in the house of Saul, that I may deal kindly with him for Jonathan's sake?

В домі Саула був раб, на ім’я Сива; і покликали його до Давида, і сказав йому цар: чи ти Сива? І той сказав: я, раб твій.	And there was a servant of the house of Saul, and his name was Siba: and they call him to David; and the king said to him, Art thou Siba? and he said, I am thy servant.

І сказав цар: чи немає ще кого-небудь з дому Саулового? я зробив би йому милість Божу. І сказав Сива цареві: є син Іонафана, кульгавий на ноги.	And the king said, Is there yet a man left of the house of Saul, that I may act towards him with the mercy of God? and Siba said to the king, There is yet a son of Jonathan, lame of his feet.

І сказав йому цар: де він? І сказав Сива цареві: ось, він у домі Махира, сина Аммиелового, у Лодеварі.	And the king said, Where is he? and Siba said to the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of Amiel of Lodabar.

І послав цар Давид, і взяли його з дому Махира, сина Аммиелового, з Лодевара.	And king David sent, and took him out of the house of Machir the son of Amiel of Lodabar.

І прийшов Мемфивосфей, син Іонафана, сина Саулового, до Давида, і упав на лице своє, і поклонився [цареві]. І сказав Давид: Мемфивосфею! І сказав той: ось раб твій.	And Memphibosthe the son of Jonathan the son of Saul comes to king David, and he fell upon his face and did obeisance to him: and David said to him, Memphibosthe: and he said, Behold thy servant.

І сказав йому Давид: не бійся; я зроблю тобі милість заради батька твого Іонафана і поверну тобі всі поля Саула, батька твого, і ти завжди будеш їсти хліб за моїм столом.	And David said to him, Fear not, for I will surely deal mercifully with thee for the sake of Jonathan thy father, and I will restore to thee all the land of Saul the father of thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.

І поклонився [Мемфивосфей] і сказав: що таке раб твій, що ти зглянувся на такого мертвого пса, як я?	And Memphibosthe did obeisance, and said, Who am I thy servant, that thou hast looked upon a dead dog like me?

І покликав цар Сиву, слугу Саула, і сказав йому: усе, що належало Саулу і всьому дому його, я віддаю синові господаря твого;	And the king called Siba the servant of Saul, and said to him, All that belonged to Saul and to all his house have I given to the son of thy lord.

отже, обробляй для нього землю ти і сини твої і раби твої, і доставляй плоди її, щоб у сина господаря твого був хліб для їжі; Мемфивосфей же, син господаря твого, завжди буде їсти за моїм столом. У Сиви було п’ятнадцять синів і двадцять рабів.	And thou, and thy sons, and thy servants, shall till the land for him; and thou shalt bring in bread to the son of thy lord, and he shall eat bread: and Memphibosthe the son of thy lord shall eat bread continually at my table. Now Siba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

І сказав Сива цареві: усе, що наказує господар мій цар рабові своєму, виконає раб твій. Мемфивосфей їв за столом [Давида], як один із синів царя.	And Siba said to the king, According to all that my lord the king has commanded his servant, so will thy servant do. And Memphibosthe did eat at the table of David, as one of the sons of the king.

У Мемфивосфея був малолітній син, на ім’я Миха. Усі, хто жив у домі Сиви, були рабами Мемфивосфея.	And Memphibosthe had a little son, and his name was Micha: and all the household of Siba were servants to Memphibosthe.

І жив Мемфивосфей в Єрусалимі, тому що він їв завжди за царським столом. Він був кульгавий на обидві ноги.	And Memphibosthe dwelt in Jerusalem, for he continually ate at the table of the king; and he was lame in both his feet.
Глава 10	Chapter 10

1	1
Через деякий час помер цар Аммонитський, і запанував замість нього син його Аннон.	And it came to pass after this that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Annon his son reigned in his stead.
2	2
І сказав Давид: зроблю я милість Аннону, синові Наасовому, за благодіяння, які зробив мені батько його. І послав Давид слуг своїх утішити Аннона за батька його. І прийшли слуги Давидові в землю Аммонитську.	And David said, I will shew mercy to Annon the son of Naas, as his father dealt mercifully with me. And David sent to comfort him concerning his father by the hand of his servants; and the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon.

Але князі аммонитські сказали Аннону, господареві своєму: невже ти думаєш, що Давид з поваги до батька твого надіслав до тебе утішителів? чи не для того, щоб оглянути місто і виглядіти в ньому і потім зруйнувати його, надіслав Давид слуг своїх до тебе?	And the princes of the children of Ammon said to Annon their lord, Is it to honour thy father before thee that David has sent comforters to thee? Has not David rather sent his servants to thee that they should search the city, and spy it out and examine it?

І взяв Аннон слуг Давидових, і поголив кожному з них половину бороди, і обрізав одяг їх наполовину, до стегон, й відпустив їх.	And Annon took the servants of David, and shaved their beards, and cut off their garments in the midst as far as their haunches, and sent them away.

Коли донесли про це Давиду, то він послав до них назустріч, бо вони були дуже знечещені. І повелів цар сказати їм: залишайтеся в Єрихоні, поки відростуть бороди ваші, і тодіповернетеся.	And they brought David word concerning the men; and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly dishonoured: and the king said, Remain in Jericho till your beards have grown, and then ye shall return.

І побачили аммонитяни, що вони зробилися ненависними для Давида; і послали аммонитяни найняти сирійців з Беф-Рехова і сирійців Суви двадцять тисяч піших, у царя [Амаликитського] Маахи тисячу чоловік і з Істова дванадцять тисяч чоловік.	And the children of Ammon saw that the people of David were ashamed; and the children of Ammon sent, and hired the Syrians of Bæthraam, and the Syrians of Suba, and Roob, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Amalec with a thousand men, and Istob with twelve thousand men.

Коли почув про це Давид, то послав Іоава з усім військом хоробрих.	And David heard, and sent Joab and all his host, even the mighty men.
8	8
І вийшли аммонитяни і розташувалися до битви біля воріт, а сирійці Суви і Рехова, й Істова, і Маахи, стали окремо в полі.	And the children of Ammon went forth, and set the battle in array by the door of the gate: those of Syria, Suba, and Roob, and Istob, and Amalec, being by themselves in the field.

І побачив Іоав, що вороже військо було поставлено проти нього і спереду і ззаду, і вибрав воїнів з усіх добірних в Ізраїлі, і вишикував їх проти сирійців;	And Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him from that which was opposed in front and from behind, and he chose out some of all the young men of Israel, and they set themselves in array against Syria.

іншу ж частину людей доручив Авессі, братові своєму, щоб він вишикував їх проти аммонитян.	And the rest of the people he gave into the hand of Abessa his brother, and they set the battle in array opposite to the children of Ammon.
11	11
І сказав Іоав: якщо сирійці будуть долати мене, ти допоможеш мені; а якщо аммонитяни тебе будуть долати, я прийду до тебе на допомогу;	And he said, If Syria be too strong for me, then shall ye help me: and if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then will we be ready to help thee.

будь мужній, і будемо стояти твердо за народ наш і за міста Бога нашого, а Господь зробить, що Йому вгодно.	Be thou courageous, and let us be strong for our people, and for the sake of the cities of our God, and the Lord shall do that which is good in his eyes.
13	13
І вступив Іоав з народом, який був у нього, у битву із сирійцями, і вони побігли від нього.	And Joab and his people with him advanced to battle against Syria, and they fled from before him.
14	14
Аммонитяни ж, побачивши, що сирійці біжать, побігли від Авесси і ввійшли в місто. І повернувся Іоав від аммонитян і прийшов у Єрусалим.	And the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, and they fled from before Abessa, and entered into the city: and Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
15	15
Сирійці, бачачи, що вони уражені ізраїльтянами, зібралися разом.	And the Syrians saw that they were worsted before Israel, and they gathered themselves together.
16	16
І послав Адраазар і покликав сирійців, які за річкою [Халамаком], і прийшли вони до Елама; а Совак, воєначальник Адраазарів, начальствував над ними.	And Adraazar sent and gathered the Syrians from the other side of the river Chalamak, and they came to Ælam; and Sobac the captain of the host of Adraazar was at their head.

Коли донесли про це Давиду, то він зібрав усіх ізраїльтян, і перейшов Йордан і прийшов до Елама. Сирійці вишикувалися проти Давида й билися з ним.	And it was reported to David, and he gathered all Israel, and went over Jordan, and came to Ælam: and the Syrians set the battle in array against David, and fought with him.

І побігли сирійці від ізраїльтян. Давид знищив у сирійців сімсот колісниць і сорок тисяч вершників; уразив і воєначальника Совака, який там і помер.	And Syria fled from before Israel, and David destroyed of Syria seven hundred chariots, and forty thousand horsemen, and he smote Sobac the captain of his host, and he died there.

Коли всі царі, покірні Адраазару, побачили, що вони уражені ізраїльтянами, то уклали мир з ізраїльтянами і підкорилися їм. А сирійці боялися надалі допомагати аммонитянам.	And all the kings the servants of Adraazar saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, and they went over to Israel, and served them: and Syria was afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.
Глава 11	Chapter 11

1	1
Через рік, у той час, коли виходять царі в походи, Давид послав Іоава і слуг своїх з ним і всіх ізраїльтян; і вони вразили аммонитян і обложили Равву; Давид же залишався в Єрусалимі.	And it came to pass when the time of the year for kings going out to battle had come round, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbath: but David remained at Jerusalem.

Одного разу надвечір Давид, вставши з постелі, прогулювався на покрівлі царського дому і побачив з покрівлі жінку, яка купається; а та жінка була дуже красива.	And it came to pass toward evening, that David arose off his couch, and walked on the roof of the king's house, and saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

І послав Давид розвідати, хто ця жінка? І сказали йому: це Вирсавія, дочка Елиама, дружина Урії хеттеянина.	And David sent and enquired about the woman: and one said, Is not this Bersabee the daughter of Eliab, the wife of Urias the Chettite?

Давид послав слуг узяти її; і вона прийшла до нього, і він спав з нею. Коли ж вона очистилася від нечистоти своєї, повернулася в дім свій.	And David sent messengers, and took her, and went in to her, and he lay with her: and she was purified from her uncleanness, and returned to her house.

Жінка ця зробилася вагітною і послала сповістити Давида, говорячи: я вагітна.	And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child.

І послав Давид сказати Іоаву: пришли до мене Урію хеттеянина. І послав Іоав Урію до Давида.	And David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Urias the Chettite; and Joab sent Urias to David.
7	7
І прийшов до нього Урія, і розпитав його Давид про становище Іоава і про становище народу, і про хід війни.	And Urias arrived and went in to him, and David asked him how Joab was, and how the people were, and how the war went on.
8	8
І сказав Давид Урії: йди додому й омий ноги свої. І вийшов Урія з дому царського, а слідом за ним понесли і царську страву.	And David said to Urias, Go to thy house, and wash thy feet: and Urias departed from the house of the king, and a portion of meat from the king followed him.
9	9
Але Урія спав біля воріт царського дому з усіма слугами свого господаря, і не пішов у свій дім.	And Urias slept at the door of the king with the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
10	10
І донесли Давиду, говорячи: не пішов Урія в дім свій. І сказав Давид Урії: ось, ти прийшов з дороги; чому ж не пішов ти в дім свій?	And they brought David word, saying, Urias has not gone down to his house. And David said to Urias, Art thou not come from a journey? why hast thou not gone down to thy house?

І сказав Урія Давиду: ковчег [Божий] і Ізраїль й Іуда знаходяться в наметах, і господар мій Іоав і раби господаря мого перебувають у полі, а я ввійшов би в дім свій їсти і пити і спати зі своєю дружиною! Клянуся твоїм життям і життям душі твоєї, цього я не зроблю.	And Urias said to David, The ark, and Israel, and Juda dwell in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; and shall I go into my house to eat and drink, and lie with my wife? how should I do this? as thy soul lives, I will not do this thing.

І сказав Давид Урії: залишся тут і на цей день, а завтра я відпущу тебе. І залишився Урія в Єрусалимі на цей день до завтра.	And David said to Urias, Remain here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee go. So Urias remained in Jerusalem that day and the day following.
13	13
І запросив його Давид, і їв Урія перед ним і пив, і напоїв його Давид. Але ввечері Урія пішов спати на постіль свою з рабами господаря свого, а у свій дім не пішов.	And David called him, and he ate before him and drank, and he made him drunk: and he went out in the evening to lie upon his bed with the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house.
14	14
Зранку Давид написав листа до Іоава і послав його з Урією.	And the morning came, and David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Urias.
15	15
В листі він написав так: поставте Урію там, де буде найсильніша битва, і відступіть від нього, щоб він був уражений і помер.	And he wrote in the letter, saying, Station Urias in front of the severe part of the fight, and retreat from behind him, so shall he be wounded and die.
16	16
Тому, коли Іоав облягав місто, то поставив він Урію на такому місці, про яке знав, що там хоробрі люди.	And it came to pass while Joab was watching against the city, that he set Urias in a place where he knew that valiant men were.

І вийшли люди з міста й билися з Іоавом, і впали деякі з народу, зі слуг Давидових; був убитий також і Урія хеттеянин.	And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and some of the people of the servants of David fell, and Urias the Chettite died also.

І послав Іоав донести Давиду про весь хід битви.	And Joab sent, and reported to David all the events of the war, so as to tell them to the king.
19	19
І наказав посланому, говорячи: коли ти розповіси цареві про весь хід битви	And he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast finished reporting all the events of the war to the king,
20	20
і побачиш, що цар розгнівався, і скаже тобі: «навіщо ви так близько підходили до міста битися? хіба ви не знали, що зі стіни будуть кидати на вас?	then it shall come to pass if the anger of the king shall arise, and he shall say to thee, Why did ye draw nigh to the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from off the wall?
21	21
хто убив Авимелеха, сина Ієроваалового? чи не жінка кинула на нього зі стіни уламок жорна [й уразила його], і він помер у Тевеці? Навіщо ж ви близько підходили до стіни?», тоді ти скажи: і раб твій Урія хеттеянин також [уражений і] помер.	Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerobaal son of Ner? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from above the wall, and he died in Thamasi? why did ye draw near to the wall? then thou shalt say, Thy servant Urias the Chettite is also dead.

І пішов [посланий від Іоава до царя в Єрусалим], і прийшов, і розповів Давиду про все, для чого послав його Іоав, про весь хід битви. Навіщо ви близько підходили до стіни?]	And the messenger of Joab went to the king to Jerusalem, and he came and reported to David all that Joab told him, all the affairs of the war. And David was very angry with Joab, and said to the messenger, Why did ye draw nigh to the wall to fight? knew ye not that ye would be wounded from off the wall? Who smote Abimelech the son of Jerobaal? did not a woman cast upon him a piece of millstone from the wall, and he died in Thamasi? why did ye draw near to the wall?

Тоді посланий сказав Давиду: долали нас ті люди і вийшли до нас у поле, і ми переслідували їх до входу у ворота;	And the messenger said to David, The men prevailed against us, and they came out against us into the field, and we came upon them even to the door of the gate.

тоді стріляли стрільці зі стіни на рабів твоїх, і померли деякі з рабів царя; помер також і раб твій Урія хеттеянин.	And the archers shot at thy servants from off the wall, and some of the king's servants died, and thy servant Urias the Chettite is dead also.

Тоді сказав Давид посланому: так скажи Іоаву: «нехай не бентежить тебе ця справа, тому що меч поїдає іноді того, іноді цього; посиль війну твою проти міста і зруйнуй його». Так підбадьор його.	And David said to the messenger, Thus shalt thou say to Joab, Let not the matter be grievous in thine eyes, for the sword devours one way at one time and another way at another: strengthen thine array against the city, and destroy it, and strengthen him.

І почула дружина Урії, що помер Урія, чоловік її, і плакала за чоловіком своїм.	And the wife of Urias heard that Urias her husband was dead, and she mourned for her husband.

Коли скінчився час плачу, Давид послав, і взяв її в дім свій, і вона стала його дружиною і народила йому сина. І було це діло, яке вчинив Давид, зле в очах Господа.	And the time of mourning expired, and David sent and took her into his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son: but the thing which David did was evil in the eyes of the Lord.
Глава 12	Chapter 12

1	1
І послав Господь Нафана [пророка] до Давида, і той прийшов до нього і сказав йому: в одному місті було два чоловіка, один багатий, а другий бідний;	And the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to David; and he went in to him, and said to him, There were two men in one city, one rich and the other poor.

у багатого було дуже багато дрібної і великої худоби,	And the rich man had very many flocks and herds.

а у бідного нічого, крім однієї овечки, яку він купив маленькою і вигодував, і вона виросла в нього разом з дітьми його; від хліба його вона їла, і з його чаші пила, і на грудях у нього спала, і була для нього, як дочка;	But the poor man had only one little ewe lamb, which he had purchased, and preserved, and reared; and it grew up with himself and his children in common; it ate of his bread and drank of his cup, and slept in his bosom, and was to him as a daughter.

і прийшов до багатої людини подорожній, і той пошкодував узяти зі своїх овець або волів, щоб приготувати [обід] для подорожнього, який прийшов до нього, а взяв овечку бідняка і приготував її для чоловіка, який прийшов до нього.	And a traveller came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his flocks and of his herds, to dress for the traveller that came to him; and he took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that came to him.

Сильно розгнівався Давид на цього чоловіка і сказав Нафану: живий Господь! гідний смерти чоловік, який зробив це;	And David was greatly moved with anger against the man; and David said to Nathan, As the Lord lives, the man that did this thing shall surely die.

і за овечку він повинен заплатити вчетверо, за те, що він зробив це, і за те, що не мав жалю.	And he shall restore the lamb seven-fold, because he has not spared.

І сказав Нафан Давиду: ти — той чоловік, [який зробив це]. Так говорить Господь Бог Ізраїлів: Я помазав тебе на царя над Ізраїлем і Я визволив тебе від руки Саула,	And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man that has done this. Thus says the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee to be king over Israel, and I rescued thee out of the hand of Saul;

і дав тобі дім господаря твого і дружин господаря твого на лоно твоє, і дав тобі дім Ізраїлів та Іудин, і, якщо цього [для тебе] мало, додав би тобі ще більше;	and I gave thee the house of thy lord, and the wives of thy lord into thy bosom, and I gave to thee the house of Israel and Juda; and if that had been little, I would have given thee yet more.

навіщо ж ти зневажив слово Господа, зробивши зле перед очима Його? Урію хеттеянина ти вразив мечем; дружину його взяв собі за дружину, а його ти убив мечем аммонитян;	Why hast thou set at nought the word of the Lord, to do that which is evil in his eyes? thou hast slain Urias the Chettite with the sword, and thou hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and thou hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

отже, не відступить меч від дому твого повіки, за те, що ти зневажив Мене і взяв дружину Урії хеттеянина, щоб вона була тобі дружиною.	Now therefore the sword shall not depart from thy house for ever, because thou hast set me at nought, and thou hast taken the wife of Urias the Chettite, to be thy wife.

Так говорить Господь: ось, Я пошлю на тебе зло з дому твого, і візьму дружин твоїх перед очима твоїми, і віддам ближньому твоєму, і буде він спати з дружинами твоїми перед цим сонцем;	Thus says the Lord, Behold, I will raise up against thee evil out of thy house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and will give them to thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

ти зробив таємно, а Я зроблю це перед усім Ізраїлем і перед сонцем.	For thou didst it secretly, but I will do this thing in the sight of all Israel, and before this sun.

І сказав Давид Нафану: згрішив я перед Господом. І сказав Нафан Давиду: і Господь зняв з тебе гріх твій; ти не помреш;	And David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David, And the Lord has put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.
14	14
але оскільки ти цим ділом подав привід ворогам Господа хулити Його, то помре народжений у тебе син.	Only because thou hast given great occasion of provocation to the enemies of the Lord by this thing, thy son also that is born to thee shall surely die.
15	15
І пішов Нафан у дім свій. І вразив Господь дитя, яке народила дружина Урії Давиду, і воно занедужало.	And Nathan departed to his house. And the Lord smote the child, which the wife of Urias the Chettite bore to David, and it was ill.
16	16
І молився Давид Богу за немовля, і постився Давид, і, усамітнившись, провів ніч, лежачи на землі.	And David enquired of God concerning the child, and David fasted, and went in and lay all night upon the ground.
17	17
І ввійшли до нього старійшини дому його, щоб підняти його з землі; але він не хотів, і не їв з ними хліба.	And the elders of his house arose and went to him to raise him up from the ground, but he would not rise, nor did he eat bread with them.

На сьомий день дитя померло, і слуги Давидові боялися донести йому, що померло немовля; тому що, говорили вони, коли немовля було ще живе, і ми умовляли його, і він не слухав голосу нашого, як же ми скажемо йому: «померло дитя»? Він зробить що-небудь зле.	And it came to pass on the seventh day that the child died: and the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive we spoke to him, and he hearkened not to our voice; and how should we tell him that the child is dead?—so would he do himself harm.

І побачив Давид, що слуги його перешіптуються між собою, і зрозумів Давид, що дитя померло, і запитав Давид слуг своїх: померло дитя? І сказали: померло.	And David understood that his servants were whispering, and David perceived that the child was dead: and David said to his servants, Is the child dead? and they said, He is dead.

Тоді Давид встав із землі й умився, і помазався, і перемінив одяг свій, і пішов у дім Господній, і молився. Повернувшись додому, повелів, щоб подали йому хліба, і він їв.	Then David rose up from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his raiment, and went into the house of God, and worshipped him; and went into his own house, and called for bread to eat, and they set bread before him and he ate.

І сказали йому слуги його: що означає, що ти так робиш: коли дитя було ще живе, ти постився і плакав [і не спав]; а коли дитя померло, ти встав і їв хліб [і пив]?	And his servants said to him, What is this thing that thou hast done concerning the child? while it was yet living thou didst fast, and weep, and watch: and when the child was dead thou didst rise up, and didst eat bread, and drink.

І сказав Давид: доки дитя було живе, я постився і плакав, бо думав: хто знає, чи не помилує мене Господь, і дитя залишиться живим?	And David said, While the child yet lived, I fasted and wept; for I said, Who knows if the Lord will pity me, and the child live?

А тепер воно померло; навіщо ж мені поститися? Хіба я можу повернути його? Я піду до нього, а воно не повернеться до мене.	But now it is dead, why should I fast thus? shall I be able to bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

І утішив Давид Вирсавію, дружину свою, і ввійшов до неї і спав з нею; і вона [зачала і] народила сина, і нарекла йому ім’я: Соломон. І Господь полюбив його	And David comforted Bersabee his wife, and he went in to her, and lay with her; and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him.

і послав пророка Нафана, і він нарік йому ім’я: Ієдидія^* за словом Господа.	And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and called his name Jeddedi, for the Lord's sake.

Іоав воював проти Равви аммонитської і майже взяв цареве місто.	And Joab fought against Rabbath of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.
27	27
І послав Іоав до Давида сказати йому: я напав на Равву й оволодів водою міста;	And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbath, and taken the city of waters.
28	28
тепер збери інших людей і підступи до міста і візьми його; тому що, коли я візьму його, то моє ім’я буде наречене йому.	And now gather the rest of the people, and encamp against the city, and take it beforehand; lest I take the city first, and my name be called upon it.

І зібрав Давид весь народ і пішов до Равви, і воював проти неї і взяв її.	And David gathered all the people, and went to Rabbath, and fought against it, and took it.

І взяв Давид вінець царя їх з голови його, — а в ньому було золота талант і дорогоцінний камінь, — і поклав його Давид на свою голову, і здобичі з міста виніс дуже багато.	And he took the crown of Molchom their king from off his head, and the weight of it was a talent of gold, with precious stones, and it was upon the head of David; and he carried forth very much spoil of the city.

А людей, які були у ньому, він вивів і поклав їх під пилки, під залізні молотарки, під залізні сокири, і кинув їх у випалювальні печі. Так він учинив з усіма містами аммонитськими. І повернувся після того Давид і весь народ в Єрусалим.	And he brought forth the people that were in it, and put them under the saw, and under iron harrows, and axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick-kiln: and thus he did to all the cities of the children of Ammon. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
Глава 13	Chapter 13

1	1
І було після того: в Авессалома, сина Давидового, була сестра красива, на ім’я Фамар, і полюбив її Амнон, син Давида.	And it happened after this that Abessalom the son of David had a very beautiful sister, and her name was Themar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.

Й уболівав Амнон до того, що занедужав через Фамар, сестру свою; тому що вона була дівчина, і Амнону здавалося тяжким що-небудь зробити з нею.	And Amnon was distressed even to sickness, because of Themar his sister; for she was a virgin, and it seemed very difficult for Amnon to do anything to her.

Але в Амнона був друг, на ім’я Іонадав, син Самая, брата Давидового; і був Іонадав людиною дуже хитрою.	And Amnon had a friend, and his name was Jonadab, the son of Samaa the brother of David: and Jonadab was a very cunning man.

І він сказав йому: від чого ти так худнеш з кожним днем, сину царя, — чи не відкриєш мені? І сказав йому Амнон: Фамар, сестру Авессалома, брата мого, люблю я.	And he said to him, What ails thee that thou art thus weak, O son of the king, morning by morning? wilt thou not tell me? and Amnon said, I love Themar the sister of my brother Abessalom.

І сказав йому Іонадав: лягай у постіль твою, і прикинься хворим; і коли батько твій прийде відвідати тебе, скажи йому: нехай прийде Фамар, сестра моя, і підкріпить мене їжею, приготувавши страву на моїх очах, щоб я бачив, і їв з рук її.	And Jonadab said to him, Lie upon thy bed, and make thyself sick, and thy father shall come in to see thee; and thou shalt say to him, Let, I pray thee, Themar my sister come, and feed me with morsels, and let her prepare food before my eyes, that I may see and eat at her hands.

І ліг Амнон і прикинувся хворим, і прийшов цар відвідати його; і сказав Амнон царю: нехай прийде Фамар, сестра моя, і спече на моїх очах корж, або два, і я поїм з рук її.	So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick; and the king came in to see him: and Amnon said to the king, Let, I pray thee, my sister Themar come to me, and make a couple of cakes in my sight, and I will eat them at her hand.

І послав Давид до Фамар в дім сказати: піди в дім Амнона, брата твого, і приготуй йому страву.	And David sent to Themar to the house, saying, Go now to thy brother's house, and dress him food.

І пішла вона в дім брата свого Амнона; а він лежить. І взяла вона борошна і замісила, і приготувала на очах його і спекла коржі,	And Themar went to the house of her brother Amnon, and he was lying down: and she took the dough and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes.

і взяла сковороду і виклала перед ним; але він не хотів їсти. І сказав Амнон: нехай усі вийдуть від мене. І вийшли від нього всі люди,	And she took the frying-pan and poured them out before him, but he would not eat. And Amnon said, Send out every man from about me. And they removed every man from about him.

і сказав Амнон Фамар: віднеси страву у внутрішню кімнату, і я поїм з рук твоїх. І взяла Фамар коржі, що приготувала, і віднесла Амнону, братові своєму, у внутрішню кімнату.	And Amnon said to Themar, Bring in the food into the closet, and I will eat of thy hand. And Themar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them to her brother Amnon into the chamber.

І коли вона поставила перед ним, щоб він їв, то він схопив її, і сказав їй: іди, лягай зі мною, сестро моя.	And she brought them to him to eat, and he caught hold of her, and said to her, Come, lie with me, my sister.

And I, whither shall I remove my reproach? and thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. And now, speak, I pray thee, to the king, for surely he will not keep me from thee.

Але він не хотів слухати слів її, і переборов її, і зґвалтував її, і лежав з нею.	But Amnon would not hearken to her voice; and he prevailed against her, and humbled her, and lay with her.

Потім зненавидів її Амнон величезною ненавистю, так що ненависть, якою він зненавидів її, була сильнішою за любов, яку мав до неї; і сказав Амнон: встань, іди.	Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her, for the last wickedness was greater than the first: and Amnon said to her, Rise, and begone.

And she had on her a variegated robe, for so were the king's daughters that were virgins attired in their apparel: and his servant led her forth, and shut the door after her.

І посипала Фамар попелом голову свою, і роздерла різнобарвний одяг, який мала на собі, і поклала руки свої на голову свою, і так ішла і волала.	And Themar took ashes, and put them on her head; and she rent the variegated garment that was upon her: and she laid her hands on her head, and went crying continually.

І сказав їй Авессалом, брат її: чи не Амнон, брат твій, був з тобою? — але тепер мовчи, сестро моя; він — брат твій; не тужи серцем твоїм про цю справу. І жила Фамар на самоті в домі Авессалома, брата свого.	And Abessalom her brother said to her, Has thy brother Amnon been with thee? now then, my sister, be silent, for he is thy brother: be not careful to mention this matter. So Themar dwelt as a widow in the house of her brother Abessalom.

І почув цар Давид про все це, і дуже розгнівався, [але не засмутив духу Амнона, сина свого, тому що любив його, бо він був первісток його].	And king David heard of all these things, and was very angry; but he did not grieve the spirit of his son Amnon, because he loved him, for he was his first-born.

Авессалом же не говорив з Амноном ні поганого, ні доброго; бо зненавидів Авессалом Амнона за те, що він знечестив Фамар, сестру його.	And Abessalom spoke not to Amnon, good or bad, because Abessalom hated Amnon, on account of his humbling his sister Themar.

Через два роки було стриження овець в Авессалома у Ваал-Гацорі, що в Єфрема, і покликав Авессалом усіх синів царських.	And it came to pass at the end of two whole years, that they were shearing sheep for Abessalom in Belasor near Ephraim: and Abessalom invited all the king's sons.

І прийшов Авессалом до царя і сказав: ось, нині стриження овець у раба твого; нехай піде цар і слуги його з рабом твоїм.	And Abessalom came to the king, and said, Behold, thy servant has a sheep-shearing; let now the king and his servants go with thy servant.

Але цар сказав Авессалому: ні, сину мій, ми не підемо всі, щоб не бути тобі за тягар. І сильно просив його Авессалом; але він не захотів іти, і благословив його.	And the king said to Abessalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, and let us not be burdensome to thee. And he pressed him; but he would not go, but blessed him.

І сказав йому Авессалом: принаймні нехай піде з нами Амнон, брат мій. І сказав йому цар: навіщо йому йти з тобою?	And Abessalom said to him, And if not, let, I pray thee, my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said to him, Why should he go with thee?

Але Авессалом ублагав його, і він відпустив з ним Амнона і всіх царських синів; [і зробив Авессалом бенкет, як цар робить бенкет].	And Abessalom pressed him, and he sent with him Amnon and all the king's sons; and Abessalom made a banquet like the banquet of the king.

Авессалом же наказав слугам своїм, сказавши: дивіться, як тільки розвеселиться серце Амнона від вина, і я скажу вам: «уразьте Амнона», тоді убийте його, не бійтеся; це я наказую вам, будьте сміливі й мужні.	And Abessalom charged his servants, saying, Mark when the heart of Amnon shall be merry with wine, and I shall say to you, Smite Amnon, and slay him: fear not; for is it not I that command you? Be courageous, and be valiant.

І вчинили слуги Авессалома з Амноном, як наказав Авессалом. Тоді встали всі царські сини, сіли кожен на мула свого й утекли.	And the servants of Abessalom did to Amnon as Abessalom commanded them: and all the sons of the king rose up, and they mounted every man his mule, and fled.

Коли вони були ще в дорозі, дійшла чутка до Давида, що Авессалом умертвив усіх царських синів, і не залишилося жодного з них.	And it came to pass, when they were in the way, that a report came to David, saying, Abessalom has slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them left.

І встав цар, і роздер одяг свій, і простягнувся на землі, і всі слуги його, які стоять перед ним, роздерли одяг свій.	Then the king arose, and rent his garments, and lay upon the ground: and all his servants that were standing round him rent their garments.

Але Іонадав, син Самая, брата Давидового, сказав: нехай не думає господар мій [цар], що всіх отроків, царських синів, умертвили; один тільки Амнон помер, тому що в Авессалома був цей задум з того дня, як Амнон знечестив сестру його;	And Jonadab the son of Samaa brother of David, answered and said, Let not my lord the king say that he has slain all the young men the sons of the king, for Amnon only of them all is dead; for he was appointed to death by the mouth of Abessalom from the day that he humbled his sister Themar.

отже, нехай господар мій, цар, не тривожиться думкою про те, начебто померли всі царські сини: помер один тільки Амнон.	And now let not my lord the king take the matter to heart, saying, All the king's sons are dead: for Amnon only of them all is dead.

І втік Авессалом. І підняв слуга, який стояв на сторожі, очі свої, і побачив: ось, багато народу йде по дорозі на схилі гори. [І прийшов вартовий, і сповістив царю, і сказав: я бачив людей на дорозі Оронській на схилі гори.]	And Abessalom escaped: and the young man the watchman lifted up his eyes, and looked; and, behold, much people went in the way behind him from the side of the mountain in the descent: and the watchman came and told the king, and said, I have seen men by the way of Oronen, by the side of the mountain.

Тоді Іонадав сказав цареві: це йдуть царські сини; як говорив раб твій, так і є.	And Jonadab said to the king, Behold, the king's sons are present: according to the word of thy servant, so has it happened.

І ледь тільки сказав він це, ось прийшли царські сини, і підняли крик і плакали. І сам цар і всі слуги його плакали дуже великим плачем.	And it came to pass when he had finished speaking, that, behold, the king's sons came, and lifted up their voices and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept with a very great weeping.

Авессалом же утік і пішов до Фалмая, сина Емиуда, царя Гессурського [у землю Хамаахадську]. І плакав [цар] Давид за сином своїм в усі дні.	But Abessalom fled, and went to Tholmi son of Emiud king of Gedsur to the land of Chamaachad: and king David mourned for his son continually.

Авессалом утік і прийшов у Гессур і пробув там три роки.	So Abessalom fled, and departed to Gedsur, and was there three years.

І не став цар Давид переслідувати Авессалома; бо втішився після смерти Амнона.	And king David ceased to go out after Abessalom, for he was comforted concerning Amnon, touching his death.
Глава 14	Chapter 14

1	1
І помітив Іоав, син Саруї, що серце царя навернулося до Авессалома.	And Joab the son of Saruia knew that the heart of the king was toward Abessalom.
2	2
І послав Іоав у Фекою, і взяв звідти розумну жінку і сказав їй: прикинься, що ти плачеш, і одягни печальний одяг, і не намащуйся єлеєм, і представся жінкою, яка багато днів плакала за померлим;	And Joab sent to Thecoe, and took thence a cunning woman, and said to her, Mourn, I pray thee, and put on mourning apparel, and anoint thee not with oil, and thou shalt be as a woman mourning for one that is dead thus for many days.

і піди до царя і скажи йому так і так. І вклав Іоав у вуста її, що сказати.	And thou shalt go to the king, and speak to him according to this word. And Joab put the words in her mouth.

І ввійшла жінка фекоїтянка до царя й упала лицем своїм на землю, і поклонилася і сказала: допоможи, царю, [допоможи]!	So the woman of Thecoe went in to the king and fell upon her face to the earth, and did him obeisance, and said, Help, O king, help.

І сказав їй цар: що тобі? І сказала вона: я [давно] вдова, чоловік мій помер;	And the king said to her, What is the matter with thee? And she said, I am indeed a widow woman, and my husband is dead.
6	6
і у раби твоєї було два сини; вони посварилися в полі, і не було кому розняти їх, і вразив один другого й умертвив його.	And moreover thy handmaid had two sons, and they fought together in the field, and there was no one to part them; and the one smote the other his brother, and slew him.

І ось, повстали всі родичі на рабу твою, і говорять: «віддай убивцю брата свого; ми вб’ємо його за душу брата його, якого він згубив, і знищимо навіть спадкоємця». І так вони погасять останню іскру мою, щоб не залишити чоловікові моєму імені і потомства на лиці землі.	And behold the whole family rose up against thine handmaid, and they said, Give up the one that smote his brother, and we will put him to death for the life of his brother, whom he slew, and we will take away even your heir: so they will quench my coal that is left, so as not to leave my husband remnant or name on the face of the earth.

І сказав цар жінці: йди спокійно додому, я дам наказ про тебе.	And the king said to the woman, Go in peace to thy house, and I will give commandment concerning thee.

Але жінка фекоїтянка сказала цареві: на мені, господарю мій царю, нехай буде провина і на домі батька мого, цар же і престіл його невинний.	And the woman of Thecoe said to the king, On me, my lord, O king, and on my father's house be the iniquity, and the king and his throne be guiltless.

І сказав цар: того, хто буде проти тебе, приведи до мене, і він більше не торкнеться тебе.	And the king said, Who was it that spoke to thee? thou shalt even bring him to me, and one shall not touch him any more.

Вона сказала: пом’яни, царю, Господа Бога твого, щоб не примножилися месники за кров і не погубили сина мого. І сказав цар: живий Господь! не упаде і волосина сина твого на землю.	And she said, Let now the king remember concerning his Lord God in that the avenger of blood is multiplied to destroy, and let them not take away my son. And he said, As the Lord lives, not a hair of thy son shall fall to the ground.

І сказала жінка: дозволь рабі твоїй сказати ще слово господарю моєму царю.	And the woman said, Let now thy servant speak a word to my lord the king. And he said, Say on.

Він сказав: говори. І сказала жінка: чому ти так думаєш проти народу Божого? Цар, сказавши це слово, звинуватив себе самого, тому що не повертає вигнанця свого.	And the woman said, Why hast thou devised this thing against the people of God? or is this word out of the king's mouth as a transgression, so that the king should not bring back his banished?

Ми помремо і будемо, як вода, вилита на землю, яку не можна зібрати; але Бог не бажає погубити душу і помишляє, як би не відкинути від Себе і відкинутого.	For we shall surely die, and be as water poured upon the earth, which shall not be gathered up, and God shall take the life, even as he devises to thrust forth from him his outcast.

І тепер я прийшла сказати цареві, господарю моєму, ці слова, тому що народ лякає мене; і раба твоя сказала: поговорю я з царем, чи не зробить він за словом раби своєї;	And now whereas I came to speak this word to my lord the king, the reason is that the people will see me, and thy handmaid will say, Let one now speak to my lord the king, if peradventure the king will perform the request of his handmaid;

цар вислухає і визволить рабу свою від руки людей, які хочуть знищити мене разом із сином моїм із насліддя Божого.	for the king will hear. Let him rescue his handmaid out of the hand of the man that seeks to cast out me and my son from the inheritance of God.

І сказала раба твоя: нехай буде слово господаря мого царя в утіху мені, тому що господар мій цар, як ангел Божий, і може вислухати і добре і лихе. І Господь Бог твій буде з тобою.	And the woman said, If now the word of my lord the king be gracious,—well: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king, to hear good and evil: and the Lord thy God shall be with thee.

І відповів цар і сказав жінці: не втаї від мене, про що я запитаю тебе. І сказала жінка: говори, господарю мій царю.	And the king answered, and said to the woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the matter which I ask thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king by all means speak.
19	19
І сказав цар: чи не рука Іоава у всьому цьому з тобою? І відповіла жінка і сказала: нехай живе душа твоя, господарю мій царю; ні праворуч, ні ліворуч не можна ухилитися від того, що сказав господар мій, цар; справді, раб твій Іоав наказав мені, і він вклав у вуста раби твоєї усі ці слова;	And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab in all this matter with thee? and the woman said to the king, As thy soul lives, my lord, O king, there is no turning to the right hand or to the left from all that my lord the king has spoken; for thy servant Joab himself charged me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine handmaid.

щоб притчею дати ділу такий вигляд, раб твій Іоав навчив мене; але господар мій [цар] мудрий, як мудрий ангел Божий, щоб знати все, що на землі.	In order that this form of speech might come about it was that thy servant Joab has framed this matter: and my lord is wise as is the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.

І сказав цар Іоаву: ось, я зробив [за словом твоїм]; піди ж, поверни отрока Авессалома.	And the king said to Joab, Behold now, I have done to thee according to this thy word: go, bring back the young man Abessalom.
22	22
Тоді Іоав упав лицем на землю і поклонився, і благословив царя і сказав: тепер знає раб твій, що знайшов благовоління перед очима твоїми, господарю мій царю, тому що цар зробив за словом раба свого.	And Joab fell on his face to the ground, and did obeisance, and blessed the king: and Joab said, To-day thy servant knows that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king, for my lord the king has performed the request of his servant.

І встав Іоав, і пішов у Гессур, і привів Авессалома в Єрусалим.	And Joab arose, and went to Gedsur, and brought Abessalom to Jerusalem.

І сказав цар: нехай він повернеться в дім свій, а лиця мого не бачить. І пішов Авессалом у свій дім, а лиця царевого не бачив.	And the king said, Let him return to his house, and not see my face. And Abessalom returned to his house, and saw not the king's face.
25	25
Не було в усьому Ізраїлі чоловіка настільки красивого, як Авессалом, і стільки хвалимого, як він; від підошви ніг до верха голови його не було в нього недоліку.	And there was not a man in Israel so very comely as Abessalom: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
26	26
Коли він стриг голову свою, — а він стриг її щороку, тому що вона обтяжувала його, — то волосся з голови його важило двісті сиклів за вагою царською.	And when he polled his head, (and it was at the beginning of every year that he polled it, because it grew heavy upon him,) even when he polled it, he weighed the hair of his head, two hundred shekels according to the royal shekel.

І народилися в Авессалома три сини й одна дочка, на ім’я Фамар; вона була жінка красива [і стала дружиною Ровоама, сина Соломонового, і народила йому Авию].	And there were born to Abessalom three sons and one daughter, and her name was Themar: she was a very beautiful woman, and she becomes the wife of Roboam son of Solomon, and she bears to him Abia.

І залишався Авессалом в Єрусалимі два роки, а лиця царевого не бачив.	And Abessalom remained in Jerusalem two full years, and he saw not the king's face.
29	29
І послав Авессалом за Іоавом, щоб послати його до царя, але той не захотів прийти до нього. Послав і вдруге; але той не захотів прийти.	And Abessalom sent to Joab to bring him in to the king, and he would not come to him: and he sent to him the second time, and he would not come.

І сказав [Авессалом] слугам своїм: бачите ділянку поля Іоава поряд з моїм, і в нього там ячмінь; підіть, випаліть його вогнем. І випалили слуги Авессалома ту ділянку поля вогнем. [І прийшли слуги Іоава до нього, роздерши одяг свій, і сказали: слуги Авессалома випалили ділянку твою вогнем.]	And Abessalom said to his servants, Behold, Joab's portion in the field is next to mine, and he has in it barley; go and set it on fire. And the servants of Abessalom set the field on fire: and the servants of Joab come to him with their clothes rent, and they said to him, The servants of Abessalom have set the field on fire.

І встав Іоав, і прийшов до Авессалома в дім, і сказав йому: навіщо слуги твої випалили мою ділянку вогнем?	And Joab arose, and came to Abessalom into the house, and said to him, Why have thy servants set my field on fire?

І сказав Авессалом Іоаву: ось, я посилав за тобою, говорячи: прийди сюди, і я пошлю тебе до царя сказати: навіщо я прийшов з Гессура? Краще було б мені залишатися там. Я хочу побачити лице царя. Якщо ж я винен, то убий мене.	And Abessalom said to Joab, Behold, I sent to thee, saying, Come hither, and I will send thee to the king, saying, Why did I come out of Gedsur? it would have been better for me to have remained there: and now, behold, I have not seen the face of the king; but if there is iniquity in me, then put me to death.

І пішов Іоав до царя і переказав йому це. І покликав цар Авессалома; він прийшов до царя, [поклонився йому] й упав лицем своїм на землю перед царем; і поцілував цар Авессалома.	And Joab went in to the king, and brought him word: and he called Abessalom, and he went in to the king, and did him obeisance, and fell upon his face to the ground, even in the presence of the king; and the king kissed Abessalom.
Глава 15	Chapter 15

1	1
Після цього Авессалом завів у себе колісниці і коней і п’ятдесят скороходів.	And it came to pass after this that Abessalom prepared for himself chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

І вставав Авессалом рано-вранці, і ставав при дорозі біля воріт, і коли хто-небудь, маючи позов, ішов до царя на суд, то Авессалом підкликав його до себе і запитував: з якого міста ти? І коли той відповідав: з такого-то коліна Ізраїлевого раб твій,	And Abessalom rose early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate: and it came to pass that every man who had a cause, came to the king for judgment, and Abessalom cried to him, and said to him, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

тоді говорив йому Авессалом: ось, справа твоя добра і справедлива, але у царя нема кому вислухати тебе.	And Abessalom said to him, See, thy affairs are right and clear, yet thou hast no one appointed of the king to hear thee.

І говорив Авессалом: о, якби мене поставили суддею в цій землі! До мене приходив би всякий, хто має суперечку і позов, і я судив би його за правдою.	And Abessalom said, O that one would make me a judge in the land; then every man who had a dispute or a cause would come to me, and I would judge him!

І коли підходив хто-небудь поклонитися йому, то він простягав руку свою й обіймав його і цілував його.	And it came to pass when a man came near to do him obeisance, that he stretched out his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.

Так робив Авессалом із кожним ізраїльтянином, який приходив на суд до царя, і приваблював Авессалом до себе серця ізраїльтян.	And Abessalom did after this manner to all Israel that came to the king for judgment; and Abessalom gained the hearts of the men of Israel.

Коли минуло сорок років царювання Давида, Авессалом сказав цареві: піду я і виконаю обітницю мою, яку я дав Господу, у Хевроні;	And it came to pass after forty years, that Abessalom said to his father, I will go now, and pay my vows, which I vowed to the Lord in Chebron.
8	8
бо я, раб твій, живучи в Гессурі в Сирії, дав обітницю: якщо Господь поверне мене в Єрусалим, то я принесу жертву Господу.	For thy servant vowed a vow when I dwelt at Gedsur in Syria, saying, If the Lord should indeed restore me to Jerusalem, then will I serve the Lord.

І сказав йому цар: іди з миром. І встав він і пішов у Хеврон.	And the king said to him, Go in peace. And he arose and went to Chebron.
10	10
І розіслав Авессалом спостерігачів в усі коліна Ізраїлеві, сказавши: коли ви почуєте звук труби, то говоріть: Авессалом став царем у Хевроні.	And Abessalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, When ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then shall ye say, Abessalom is become king in Chebron.

З Авессаломом пішли з Єрусалима двісті чоловік, які були запрошені ним, і пішли з простоти своєї, не знаючи, в чому справа.	And there went with Abessalom two hundred chosen men from Jerusalem; and they went in their simplicity, and knew not anything.

Під час жертвоприношення Авессалом послав і прикликав Ахитофела гилонянина, радника Давидового, з його міста Гило. І склалася сильна змова, і народ стікався і збільшувався навколо Авессалома.	And Abessalom sent to Achitophel the Theconite, the counsellor of David, from his city, from Gola, where he was sacrificing: and there was a strong conspiracy; and the people with Abessalom were increasingly numerous.

І прийшов вісник до Давида і сказав: серце ізраїльтян схилилося на бік Авессалома.	And there came a messenger to David, saying, The heart of the men of Israel is gone after Abessalom.
14	14
І сказав Давид усім слугам своїм, які були при ньому в Єрусалимі: встаньте, втечімо, тому що не буде нам порятунку від Авессалома; поспішайте, щоб нам утекти, щоб він не застиг і не захопив нас, і не навів на нас лиха і не знищив міста мечем.	And David said to all his servants who were with him in Jerusalem, Rise, and let us flee, for we have no refuge from Abessalom: make haste and go, lest he overtake us speedily, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

І сказали слуги царські царю: в усьому, що вгодно господарю нашому царю, ми — раби твої.	And the king's servants said to the king, In all things which our lord the king chooses, behold we are thy servants.

І вийшов цар і весь дім його за ним пішки. Залишив же цар десять дружин, наложниць [своїх], для збереження дому.	And the king and all his house went out on foot: and the king left ten women of his concubines to keep the house.

І вийшов цар і весь народ пішки, і зупинилися в Беф-Мерхата.	And the king and all his servants went out on foot; and abode in a distant house.
18	18
І всі слуги його йшли по боках його, і всі хелефеї, і всі фелефеї, і всі гефяни до шестисот чоловік, які прийшли разом з ним з Гефа, йшли попереду царя.	And all his servants passed on by his side, and every Chelethite, and every Phelethite, and they stood by the olive tree in the wilderness: and all the people marched near him, and all his court, and all the men of might, and all the men of war, six hundred: and they were present at his side: and every Chelethite, and every Phelethite, and all the six hundred Gittites that came on foot out of Geth, and they went on before the king.

І сказав цар Еффею гефянину: навіщо і ти йдеш з нами? Повернися і залишайся з тим царем; тому що ти — чужеземець і прийшов сюди зі свого місця;	And the king said to Ethi the Gittite, Why dost thou also go with us? return, and dwell with the king, for thou art a stranger, and thou hast come forth as a sojourner out of thy place.

вчора ти прийшов, а сьогодні я змушу тебе йти з нами? Я йду, куди трапиться; повернися і поверни братів своїх із собою, [нехай учинить Господь] милість і істину [з тобою]!	Whereas thou camest yesterday, shall I to-day cause thee to travel with us, and shalt thou thus change thy place? thou didst come forth yesterday, and to-day shall I set thee in motion to go along with us? I indeed will go whithersoever I may go: return then, and cause thy brethren to return with thee, and may the Lord deal mercifully and truly with thee.

І відповів Еффей царю і сказав: живий Господь, і нехай живе господар мій цар: де б не був господар мій цар, чи в житті, а чи у смерті, там буде і раб твій.	And Ethi answered the king and said, As the Lord lives and as my lord the king lives, in the place wheresoever my lord shall be, whether it be for death or life, there shall thy servant be.

І сказав Давид Еффею: отже, йди і ходи зі мною. І пішов Еффей гефянин і всі люди його і всі діти, які були з ним.	And the king said to Ethi, Come and pass over with me. So Ethi the Gittite and the king passed over, and all his servants, and all the multitude with him.
23	23
І плакала вся земля голосно. І весь народ переходив, і цар перейшов потік Кедрон; і пішов весь народ [і цар] по дорозі до пустелі.	And all the country wept with a loud voice. And all the people passed by over the brook of Kedron; and the king crossed the brook Kedron: and all the people and the king passed on toward the way of the wilderness.

Ось і Садок [священик], і всі левити з ним несли ковчег завіту Божого з Вефари і поставили ковчег Божий; Авиафар же стояв на підвищенні, доки весь народ не вийшов з міста.	And behold also Sadoc, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Bæthar: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had passed out of the city.
25	25
І сказав цар Садокові: поверни ковчег Божий у місто [і нехай він стоїть на своєму місці]. Якщо я знайду милість перед очима Господа, то Він поверне мене і дасть мені бачити його й оселю його.	And the king said to Sadoc, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I should find favour in the eyes of the Lord, then will he bring me back, and he will shew me it and its beauty.
26	26
А якщо Він скаже так: «немає Мого благовоління до тебе», то ось я; нехай творить зі мною, що Йому благовгодно.	But if he should say thus, I have no pleasure in thee; behold, here I am, let him do to me according to that which is good in his eyes.
27	27
І сказав цар Садоку священику: чи бачиш, — повернися в місто з миром, і Ахимаас, син твій, і Іонафан, син Авиафара, обидва сини ваші з вами;	And the king said to Sadoc the priest, Behold, thou shalt return to the city in peace, and Achimaas thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar, your two sons with you.

чи бачите, я затримаюся на рівнині в пустелі, доки не прийде звістка від вас до мене.	Behold, I continue in arms in Araboth of the desert, until there come tidings from you to report to me.

І повернули Садок і Авиафар ковчег Божий в Єрусалим, і залишилися там.	So Sadoc and Abiathar brought back the ark of the Lord to Jerusalem, and it continued there.
30	30
А Давид пішов на гору Елеонську, йшов і плакав; голова в нього була покрита; він ішов босий, і всі люди, які були з ним, покрили кожен голову свою, йшли і плакали.	And David went up by the ascent of the mount of Olives, ascending and weeping, and had his head covered, and went barefooted: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head; and they went up, ascending and weeping.

Донесли Давиду і сказали: і Ахитофел у числі змовників з Авессаломом. І сказав Давид: Господи [Боже мій!] зруйнуй раду Ахитофела.	And it was reported to David, saying, Achitophel also is among the conspirators with Abessalom. And David said, O Lord my God, disconcert, I pray thee, the counsel of Achitophel.

Коли Давид зійшов на вершину гори, де він поклонявся Богу, ось назустріч йому йде Хусій архитянин, друг Давидів; одяг на ньому був розідраний, і порох на голові його.	And David came as far as Ros, where he worshipped God: and behold, Chusi the chief friend of David came out to meet him, having rent his garment, and earth was upon his head.

І сказав йому Давид: якщо ти підеш зі мною, то будеш мені за тягар;	And David said to him, If thou shouldest go over with me, then wilt thou be a burden to me;

але якщо повернешся в місто і скажеш Авессалому: «царю, [пройшли мимо брати твої, і цар батько твій пройшов, і нині] я раб твій; [залиш мене в живих;] досі я був рабом батька твого, а тепер я — твій раб»: то ти зруйнуєш для мене раду Ахитофела.	but if thou shall return to the city, and shalt say to Abessalom, Thy brethren are passed over, and the king thy father is passed over after me: and now I am thy servant, O king, suffer me to live: at one time even of late I was the servant of thy father, and now I am thy humble servant—so shalt thou disconcert for me the counsel of Achitophel.

Ось, там з тобою Садок і Авиафар священики, і всяке слово, яке почуєш з дому царя, переказуй Садоку й Авиафару священикам.	And, behold, there are there with thee Sadoc and Abiathar the priests; and it shall be that every word that thou shalt hear of the house of the king, thou shalt report it to Sadoc and Abiathar the priests.

Там з ними і два сини їхні, Ахимаас, син Садока, та Іонафан, син Авиафара; через них посилайте до мене всяку звістку, яку почуєте.	Behold, there are there with them their two sons, Achimaas the son of Sadoc, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar; and by them ye shall report to me every word which ye shall hear.

І прийшов Хусій, друг Давидів, у місто; Авессалом же вступав тоді в Єрусалим.	So Chusi the friend of David went into the city, and Abessalom was lately gone into Jerusalem.
Глава 16	Chapter 16

1	1
Коли Давид трохи зійшов з вершини гори, ось зустрічається йому Сива, слуга Мемфивосфея, з парою нав’ючених ослів, і на них двісті хлібів, сто зв’язок ізюма, сто зв’язок смокв і міх з вином.	And David passed on a little way from Ros; and, behold, Siba the servant of Memphibosthe came to meet him; and he had a couple of asses laden, and upon them two hundred loaves, and a hundred bunches of raisins, and a hundred cakes of dates, and a bottle of wine.

І сказав цар Сиві: для чого це в тебе? І відповів Сива: осли для дому царського, для їзди, а хліб і плоди для їжі слугам, а вино для пиття ослаблим у пустелі.	And the king said to Siba, What meanest thou by these? and Siba said, The asses are for the household of the king to sit upon, and the loaves and the dates are for the young men to eat, and the wine is for them that are faint in the wilderness to drink.

І сказав цар: де син господаря твого? І відповів Сива цареві: ось, він залишився в Єрусалимі і говорить: тепер дім Ізраїлів поверне мені царство батька мого.	And the king said, And where is the son of thy master? and Siba said to the king, Behold, he remains in Jerusalem; for he said, To-day shall the house of Israel restore to me the kingdom of my father.

І сказав цар Сиві: ось тобі все, що в Мемфивосфея. І відповів Сива, поклонившись: нехай знайду милість в очах господаря мого царя!	And the king said to Siba, Behold, all Memphibosthe's property is thine. And Siba did obeisance and said, My lord, O king, let me find grace in thine eyes.

Коли дійшов цар Давид до Бахурима, ось вийшов звідти чоловік з роду дома Саулового, на ім’я Семей, син Гери; він ішов і лихословив,	And king David came to Baurim; and, behold, there came out from thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, and his name was Semei the son of Gera. He came forth and cursed as he went,

і кидав каменями на Давида і на всіх рабів царя Давида; всі ж люди і всі хоробрі були праворуч і ліворуч [царя].	and cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on the right and left hand of the king.

Так говорив Семей, лихословлячи його: іди, іди, убивця і беззаконник!	And thus Semei said when he cursed him, Go out, go out, thou bloody man, and man of sin.
8	8
Господь повернув на тебе всю кров дому Саулового, замість якого ти став царем, і віддав Господь царство в руки Авессалома, сина твого; і ось, ти в біді, бо ти — кровожер.	The Lord has returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, because thou hast reigned in his stead; and the Lord has given the kingdom into the hand of Abessalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man.

І сказав Авесса, син Саруїн, царю: навіщо лихословить цей мертвий пес господаря мого царя? піду я і зніму з нього голову.	And Abessa the son of Saruia said to the king, Why does this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over now and take off his head.
10	10
І сказав цар: що мені і вам, сини Саруїни? [залиште його,] нехай він лихословить, тому що Господь повелів йому лихословити Давида. Хто ж може сказати: навіщо ти так робиш?	And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Saruia? even let him alone, and so let him curse, for the Lord has told him to curse David: and who shall say, Why hast thou done thus?

І сказав Давид Авессі і всім слугам своїм: ось, якщо мій син, який вийшов із стегон моїх, шукає душі моєї, тим більше син веніамитянина; залиште його, нехай лихословить, тому що Господь повелів йому;	And David said to Abessa and to all his servants, Behold, my son who came forth out of my bowels seeks my life; still more now may the son of Benjamin: let him curse, because the Lord has told him.
12	12
може бути, Господь зглянеться на приниження моє, і воздасть мені Господь благістю за теперішнє його лихослів’я.	If by any means the Lord may look on my affliction, thus shall he return me good for his cursing this day.
13	13
І йшов Давид і люди його своєю дорогою, а Семей ішов по краю гори, з боку його, йшов і лихословив, і кидав каменями в бік його і пилом.	And David and all the men with him went on the way: and Semei went by the side of the hill next to him, cursing as he went, and casting stones at him, and sprinkling him with dirt.

І прийшов цар і весь народ, який був з ним, стомлений, і відпочивав там.	And the king, and all the people with him, came away and refreshed themselves there.
15	15
Авессалом же і весь народ ізраїльський прийшли в Єрусалим, і Ахитофел з ним.	And Abessalom and all the men of Israel went into Jerusalem, and Achitophel with him.
16	16
Коли Хусій архитянин, друг Давидів, прийшов до Авессалома, то сказав Хусій Авессалому: нехай живе цар, нехай живе цар!	And it came to pass when Chusi the chief friend of David came to Abessalom, that Chusi said to Abessalom, Let the king live.

І сказав Хусій Авессалому: ні, [я піду услід того,] кого обрав Господь і цей народ і весь Ізраїль, з тим і я, і з ним залишусь.	And Chusi said to Abessalom, Nay, but following whom the Lord, and this people, and all Israel have chosen,—his will I be, and with him will I dwell.

І притому кому я буду служити? Чи не синові його? Як служив я батькові твоєму, так буду служити і тобі.	And again, whom shall I serve? should I not in the presence of his son? As I served in the sight of thy father, so will I be in thy presence.

І сказав Авессалом Ахитофелу: дай пораду, що нам робити.	And Abessalom said to Achitophel, Deliberate among yourselves concerning what we should do.

І сказав Ахитофел Авессалому: увійди до наложниць батька твого, яких він залишив охороняти дім свій; і почують усі ізраїльтяни, що ти став ненависним для батька твого, і зміцняться руки всіх, хто з тобою.	And Achitophel said to Abessalom, Go in to thy father's concubines, whom he left to keep his house; and all Israel shall hear that thou hast dishonoured thy father; and the hands of all that are with thee shall be strengthened.

І поставили для Авессалома намет на покрівлі, і ввійшов Авессалом до наложниць батька свого перед очима всього Ізраїля.	And they pitched a tent for Abessalom on the roof, and Abessalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.

Поради ж Ахитофела, які він давав, у той час вважалися, наче якби хто запитував наставляння в Бога. Такою була всяка рада Ахитофела як для Давида, так і для Авессалома.	And the counsel of Achitophel, which he counselled in former days, was as if one should enquire of the word of God: so was all the counsel of Achitophel both to David and also to Abessalom.
Глава 17	Chapter 17

1	1
І сказав Ахитофел Авессалому: виберу я дванадцять тисяч чоловік і встану і піду в погоню за Давидом у цю ніч;	And Achitophel said to Abessalom, Let me now choose out for myself twelve thousand men, and I will arise and follow after David this night:
2	2
і нападу на нього, коли він буде стомлений і з опущеними руками, і приведу його в страх; і всі люди, які з ним, розбіжаться; і я уб’ю одного царя	and I will come upon him when he is weary and weak-handed, and I will strike him with terror; and all the people with him shall flee, and I will smite the king only of all.

і всіх людей поверну до тебе; і коли не буде одного, душу якого ти шукаєш, тоді весь народ буде в мирі.	And I will bring back all the people to thee, as a bride returns to her husband: only thou seekest the life of one man, and all the people shall have peace.

І сподобалося це слово Авессалому і всім старійшинам Ізраїлевим.	And the saying was right in the eyes of Abessalom, and in the eyes of all the elders of Israel.

І сказав Авессалом: покличте Хусія архитянина; послухаємо, що він скаже.	And Abessalom said, Call now also Chusi the Arachite, and let us hear what is in his mouth, even in his also.

І прийшов Хусій до Авессалома, і сказав йому Авессалом, говорячи: ось що говорить Ахитофел; чи зробити за його словами? а якщо ні, то говори ти.	And Chusi went in to Abessalom, and Abessalom spoke to him, saying, After this manner spoke Achitophel: shall we do according to his word? but if not, do thou speak.

І сказав Хусій Авессалому: недобра цього разу порада, яку дав Ахитофел.	And Chusi said to Abessalom, This counsel which Achitophel has counselled this one time is not good.

І продовжував Хусій: ти знаєш твого батька і людей його; вони хоробрі і сильно роздратовані, як ведмедиця в полі, у якої відняли дітей, [і як вепр лютий на полі,] і батько твій — людина войовнича; він не зупиниться ночувати з народом.	And Chusi said, Thou knowest thy father and his men, that they are very mighty, and bitter in their spirit, as a bereaved bear in the field, and as a wild boar in the plain: and thy father is a man of war, and will not give the people rest.

Ось, тепер він ховається в якій-небудь печері, або в іншому місці, і якщо хто впаде при першому нападі на них, і почують і скажуть: «була поразка людей, які пішли за Авессаломом»,	For, behold, he is now hidden in one of the hills or in some other place: and it shall come to pass when he falls upon them at the beginning, that some one will certainly hear, and say, There has been a slaughter among the people that follow after Abessalom.

тоді і найхоробріший, у якого серце, як серце левине, впаде духом; тому що всьому Ізраїлю відомо, який хоробрий батько твій і мужні ті, які з ним.	Then even he that is strong, whose heart is as the heart of a lion,—it shall utterly melt: for all Israel knows that thy father is mighty, and they that are with him are mighty men.

Тому я раджу: нехай збереться до тебе весь Ізраїль, від Дана до Вирсавії, у безлічі, як пісок при морі, і ти сам підеш серед нього;	For thus I have surely given counsel, that all Israel be generally gathered to thee from Dan even to Bersabee, as the sand that is upon the sea-shore for multitude: and that thy presence go in the midst of them.
12	12
і тоді ми підемо проти нього, в якому б місці він не знаходився, і нападемо на нього, як падає роса на землю; і не залишиться в нього жодної людини з усіх, хто з ним;	And we will come upon him in one of the places where we shall find him, and we will encamp against him, as the dew falls upon the earth; and we will not leave of him and of his men so much as one.

а якщо він увійде в яке-небудь місто, то весь Ізраїль принесе до того міста мотузки, і ми стягнемо його в ріку, так що не залишиться жодного камінчика.	And if he shall have taken refuge with his army in a city, then shall all Israel take ropes to that city, and we will draw it even into the river, that there may not be left there even a stone.

І сказав Авессалом і весь Ізраїль: порада Хусія архитянина краща за пораду Ахитофела. Так Господь судив зруйнувати кращу пораду Ахитофела, щоб навести Господу біду на Авессалома.	And Abessalom, and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Chusi the Arachite is better than the counsel of Achitophel. For the Lord ordained to disconcert the good counsel of Achitophel, that the Lord might bring all evil upon Abessalom.

І сказав Хусій Садокові й Авиафарові священикам: так і так радив Ахитофел Авессалому і старійшинам Ізраїлевим, а так і так порадив я.	And Chusi the Arachite said to Sadoc and Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus Achitophel counselled Abessalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled.

І тепер пошліть швидше і скажіть Давиду так: не залишайся в цю ніч на рівнині в пустелі, але швидше перейди, щоб не загинути царю і всім людям, які з ним.	And now send quickly and report to David, saying, Lodge not this night in Araboth of the wilderness: even go and make haste, lest one swallow up the king, and all the people with him.

Іонафан і Ахимаас стояли біля джерела Рогель. І пішла служниця і розповіла їм, а вони пішли і сповістили царя Давида; бо вони не могли показатися в місті.	And Jonathan and Achimaas stood by the well of Rogel, and a maid-servant went and reported to them, and they go and tell king David; for they might not be seen to enter into the city.

І побачив їх слуга і доніс Авессалому; але вони обидва незабаром пішли і прийшли в Бахурим, у дім одного чоловіка, в якого у дворі був колодязь, і спустилися туди.	But a young man saw them and told Abessalom: and the two went quickly, and entered into the house of a man in Baurim; and he had a well in his court, and they went down into it.

А жінка взяла і розтягла над отвором колодязя покривало і насипала на нього крупи, так що не було нічого помітно.	And a woman took a covering, and spread it over the mouth of the well, and spread out ground corn upon it to dry, and the thing was not known.

І прийшли раби Авессалома до жінки в дім, і сказали: де Ахимаас та Іонафан? І сказала їм жінка: вони перейшли убрід ріку. І шукали вони, і не знайшли, і повернулися в Єрусалим.	And the servants of Abessalom came to the woman into the house, and said, Where are Achimaas and Jonathan? and the woman said to them, They are gone a little way beyond the water. And they sought and found them not, and returned to Jerusalem.

Коли вони пішли, ті вийшли з колодязя, пішли і сповістили царя Давида і сказали Давиду: встаньте і швидше перейдіть воду; бо так і так радив про вас Ахитофел.	And it came to pass after they were gone, that they came up out of the pit, and went on their way; and reported to king David, and said to David, Arise ye and go quickly over the water, for thus has Achitophel counselled concerning you.

І встав Давид і всі люди, які були з ним, і перейшли Йордан; до світанку не залишилося жодного, який не перейшов би Йордан.	And David rose up and all the people with him, and they passed over Jordan till the morning light; there was not one missing who did not pass over Jordan.

І побачив Ахитофел, що не виконали поради його, і осідлав осла, і зібрався, і пішов у дім свій, у місто своє, і зробив заповіт дому своєму, і повісився, і помер, і був похований у гробі батька свого.	And Achitophel saw that his counsel was not followed, and he saddled his ass, and rose and departed to his house into his city; and he gave orders to his household, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father.

І прийшов Давид у Маханаїм, а Авессалом перейшов Йордан, сам і весь Ізраїль з ним.	And David passed over to Manaim: and Abessalom crossed over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him.

Авессалом поставив Амессая, замість Іоава, над військом. Амессай був сином одного чоловіка, на ім’я Ієфера з Ізрееля, який ввійшов до Авигеї, дочки Нааса, сестри Саруї, матері Іоава.	And Abessalom appointed Amessai in the room of Joab over the host. And Amessai was the son of a man whose name was Jether of Jezrael: he went in to Abigaia the daughter of Naas, the sister of Saruia the mother of Joab.

І Ізраїль з Авессаломом розташувався станом в землі Галаадській.	And all Israel and Abessalom encamped in the land of Galaad.

Коли Давид прийшов у Маханаїм, то Сови, син Нааса, з Равви аммонитської, і Махир, син Аммиїла, з Лодавара, і Верзеллій галаадитянин з Роглима,	And it came to pass when David came to Manaim, that Uesbi the son of Naas of Rabbath of the sons of Ammon, and Machir son of Amiel of Lodabar, and Berzelli the Galaadite of Rogellim,

принесли [десять приготованих] постелей, [десять] блюд і глиняних посудин, і пшениці, і ячменю, і борошна, і пшона, і бобів, і сочевиці, і смажених зерен,	brought ten embroidered beds, (with double coverings,) and ten caldrons, and earthenware, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and meal, and beans, and pulse,

і меду, й олії, і овець, і сиру коров’ячого, принесли Давиду і людям, які були з ним, у їжу; бо говорили вони: народ голодний і стомлений і терпів спрагу в пустелі.	and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheeses of kine: and they brought them to David and to his people with him to eat; for one said, The people is faint and hungry and thirsty in the wilderness.
Глава 18	Chapter 18

1	1
І оглянув Давид людей, які були з ним, і поставив над ними тисячоначальників і сотників.	And David numbered the people with him, and set over them captains of thousands and captains of hundreds.
2	2
І відправив Давид людей — третю частину під проводом Іоава, третю частину під проводом Авесси, сина Саруїного, брата Іоава, третю частину під проводом Еффея гефянина. І сказав цар людям: я сам піду з вами.	And David sent away the people, the third part under the hand of Joab, and the third part under the hand of Abessa the son of Saruia, the brother of Joab, and the third part under the hand of Ethi the Gittite. And David said to the people, I also will surely go out with you.

Але люди відповіли йому: не ходи; бо, якщо ми і побіжимо, то не звернуть уваги на це; якщо і помре половина з нас, також не звернуть уваги; а ти один те саме, що нас десять тисяч; отже, для нас краще, щоб ти допомагав нам з міста.	And they said, Thou shalt not go out: for if we should indeed flee, they will not care for us; and if half of us should die, they will not mind us; for thou art as ten thousand of us: and now it is well that thou shalt be to us an aid to help us in the city.

І сказав їм цар: що угодно в очах ваших, те і зроблю. І став цар біля воріт, і весь народ виходив по сотнях і по тисячах.	And the king said to them, Whatsoever shall seem good in your eyes I will do. And the king stood by the side of the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.

І наказав цар Іоаву й Авессі й Еффею, говорячи: збережіть мені отрока Авессалома. І всі люди чули, як наказував цар усім начальникам про Авессалома.	And the king commanded Joab and Abessa and Ethi, saying, Spare for my sake the young man Abessalom. And all the people heard the king charging all the commanders concerning Abessalom.

І вийшли люди в поле назустріч ізраїльтянам, і була битва у лісі Єфремовому.	And all the people went out into the wood against Israel; and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim.
7	7
І був уражений народ ізраїльський рабами Давида; була там поразка велика в той день, — уражені двадцять тисяч [чоловік].	And the people of Israel fell down there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter in that day, even twenty thousand men.
8	8
Битва поширилася по всьому тому краю, і ліс погубив народу більше, ніж скільки знищив меч, у той день.	And the battle there was scattered over the face of all the land: and the wood consumed more of the people than the sword consumed among the people in that day.

І зустрівся Авессалом з рабами Давидовими; він був на мулі. Коли мул вбіг з ним під гілки великого дуба, то Авессалом заплутався волоссям своїм у гілках дуба і повис між небом і землею, а мул, який був під ним, утік.	And Abessalom went to meet the servants of David: and Abessalom was mounted on his mule, and the mule came under the thick boughs of a great oak; and his head was entangled in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth; and the mule passed on from under him.

І побачив це хтось і доніс Іоаву, говорячи: ось, я бачив Авессалома, що висить на дубі.	And a man saw it, and reported to Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Abessalom hanging in an oak.

І сказав Іоав чоловікові, який доніс про це: ось, ти бачив; чому ж ти не повалив його там на землю? я дав би тобі десять сиклів срібла й один пояс.	And Joab said to the man who reported it to him, And, behold, thou didst see him: why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten pieces of silver, and a girdle.

І відповів той Іоаву: якби поклали в руки мої і тисячу сиклів срібла, і тоді я не підняв би руки на царського сина; бо ми чули, як цар наказував тобі й Авессі та Еффею, говорячи: «збережіть мені отрока Авессалома»;	And the man said to Joab, Were I even to receive a thousand shekels of silver, I would not lift my hand against the king's son; for in our ears the king charged thee and Abessa and Ethi, saying, Take care of the young man Abessalom for me,

і якби я зробив інакше з небезпекою для життя мого, то це не утаїлося б від царя, і ти ж повстав би проти мене.	so as to do no harm to his life: and nothing of the matter will be concealed from the king, and thou wilt set thyself against me.

Іоав сказав: нема чого мені баритися з тобою. І взяв у руки три стріли і встромив їх у серце Авессалома, який був ще живий на дубі.	And Joab said, I will begin this; I will not thus remain with thee. And Joab took three darts in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Abessalom, while he was yet alive in the heart of the oak.

І оточили Авессалома десять слуг, зброєносців Іоава, й уразили й умертвили його.	And ten young men that bore Joab's armour compassed Abessalom, and smote him and slew him.
16	16
І засурмив Іоав трубою, і повернулися люди з погоні за Ізраїлем, бо Іоав щадив народ.	And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing Israel, for Joab spared the people.
17	17
І взяли Авессалома, і кинули його в лісі у глибоку яму, і навалили над ним величезну купу каміння. І всі ізраїльтяни розбіглися, кожен у намет свій.	And he took Abessalom, and cast him into a great cavern in the wood, into a deep pit, and set up over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every man to his tent.

Авессалом ще за життя свого взяв і поставив собі пам’ятник у царській долині; бо сказав він: немає в мене сина, щоб збереглася пам’ять імені мого. І назвав пам’ятник своїм ім’ям. І називається він «пам’ятник Авессалома» до цього дня.	Now Abessalom while yet alive had taken and set up for himself the pillar near which he was taken, and set it up so as to have the pillar in the king's dale; for he said he had no son to keep his name in remembrance: and he called the pillar, Abessalom's hand, until this day.

Ахимаас, син Садоків, сказав Іоаву: побіжу я, сповіщу царя, що Господь судом Своїм визволив його від рук ворогів його.	And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said, Let me run now and carry glad tidings to the king, for the Lord has delivered him from the hand of his enemies.

Але Іоав сказав йому: не будеш ти сьогодні добрим вісником; сповістиш в інший день, а не сьогодні, тому що помер син царя.	And Joab said to him, Thou shalt not be a messenger of glad tidings this day; thou shalt bear them another day; but on this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king's son is dead.

І сказав Іоав Хусію: піди, донеси цареві, що бачив ти. І поклонився Хусій Іоаву і побіг.	And Joab said to Chusi, Go, report to the king all that thou hast seen. And Chusi did obeisance to Joab, and went out.

Але Ахимаас, син Садоків, наполягав і говорив Іоаву: що б не було, але і я побіжу за Хусієм. Іоав же відповів: навіщо бігти тобі, сину мій? не принесеш ти доброї вістки.	And Achimaas the son of Sadoc said again to Joab, Nay, let me also run after Chusi. And Joab said, Why wouldest thou thus run, my son? attend, thou hast no tidings for profit if thou go.

[І сказав Ахимаас:] нехай так, але я побіжу. І сказав йому [Іоав]: біжи. І побіг Ахимаас по прямій дорозі і випередив Хусія.	And he said, Why should I not run? and Joab said to him, Run. And Achimaas ran along the way of Kechar, and outran Chusi.

Давид тоді сидів між двома воротами. І сторож піднявся на покрівлю воріт до стіни і, звівши очі, побачив: ось, біжить одна людина.	And David was sitting between the two gates: and the watchman went up on the top of the gate of the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold a man running alone before him.

І закричав сторож і сповістив царя. І сказав цар: якщо один, то вістка у вустах його. А той підходив усе ближче і ближче.	And the watchman cried out, and reported to the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there are good tidings in his mouth. And the man came and drew near.

Сторож побачив і іншу людину, яка біжить; і закричав сторож воротареві: ось, ще біжить одна людина. Цар сказав: і це — вісник.	And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman cried at the gate, and said, And look, another man running alone. And the king said, He also brings glad tidings.

Сторож сказав: я бачу ходу першого, схожу на ходу Ахимааса, сина Садокового. І сказав цар: це людина добра і йде з хорошою вісткою.	And the watchman said, I see the running of the first as the running of Achimaas the son of Sadoc. And the king said, He is a good man, and will come to report glad tidings.

І викликнув Ахимаас і сказав цареві: мир. І поклонився цареві лицем своїм до землі і сказав: благословенний Господь Бог твій, що видав людей, які підняли руки свої на господаря мого царя!	And Achimaas cried out and said to the king, Peace. And he did obeisance to the king with his face to the ground, and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, who has delivered up the men that lifted up their hands against my lord the king.

І сказав цар: чи благополучний отрок Авессалом? І сказав Ахимаас: я бачив велике хвилювання, коли раб царя Іоав посилав раба твого; але я не знаю, що [там] було.	And the king said, Is the young man Abessalom safe? and Achimaas said, I saw a great multitude at the time of Joab's sending the king's servant and thy servant, and I knew not what was there.

І сказав цар: відійди, стань тут. Він відійшов і став.	And the king said, Turn aside, stand still here. And he turned aside, and stood.

Ось, прийшов і Хусій [слідом за ним]. І сказав Хусій [царю]: добра звістка господарю моєму цареві! Господь явив тобі нині правду у спасінні від руки всіх, хто повстав проти тебе.	And, behold, Chusi came up, and said to the king, Let my lord the king hear glad tidings, for the Lord has avenged thee this day upon all them that rose up against thee.

І сказав цар Хусію: чи благополучний отрок Авессалом? І сказав Хусій: нехай буде з ворогами господаря мого царя і з усіма, хто замишляє лихе проти тебе, те саме, що стало з отроком!	And the king said to Chusi, Is it well with the young man Abessalom? and Chusi said, Let the enemies of my lord the king, and all whosoever have risen up against him for evil, be as that young man.

І засмутився цар, і пішов у світлицю над воротами, і плакав, і коли йшов, говорив так: сину мій Авессаломе! сину мій, сину мій Авессаломе! о, хто дав би мені померти замість тебе, Авессаломе, сину мій, сину мій!
Глава 19	Chapter 19

1	1
І сказали Іоаву: ось, цар плаче і ридає за Авессаломом.	And the king was troubled, and went to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and thus he said as he went, My son Abessalom, my son, my son Abessalom; would God I had died for thee, even I had died for thee, Abessalom, my son, my son!
2	2
І обернулася перемога того дня на плач для всього народу; бо народ почув у той день і говорив, що цар у скорботі за свого сина.	And they brought Joab word, saying, Behold, the king weeps and mourns for Abessalom.
3	3
І входив тоді народ у місто крадькома, як скрадаються люди, які соромляться, що під час битви кинулися навтіки.	And the victory was turned that day into mourning to all the people, for the people heard say that day, The king grieves after his son.
4	4
А цар закрив лице своє і голосно взивав: сину мій Авессаломе! Авессаломе, сину мій, сину мій!	And the people stole away that day to go into the city, as people steal away when they are ashamed as they flee in the battle.

І прийшов Іоав до царя в дім і сказав: ти в сором привів сьогодні всіх слуг твоїх, які врятували нині життя твоє і життя синів і дочок твоїх, і життя дружин і життя наложниць твоїх;	And the king hid his face: and the king cried with a loud voice, My son Abessalom! Abessalom my son!

ти любиш ненависників твоїх і ненавидиш тих, що люблять тебе, бо ти показав сьогодні, що ніщо для тебе і вожді і слуги; сьогодні я довідався, що якби Авессалом залишився живий, а ми усі померли, то тобі було б приємніше;	And Joab went in to the king, into the house, and said, Thou hast this day shamed the faces of all thy servants that have delivered thee this day, and have saved the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and of thy concubines,

отже, встань, вийди і поговори до серця рабів твоїх, бо клянуся Господом, що, коли ти не вийдеш, у цю ніч не залишиться в тебе жодної людини; і це буде для тебе гірше за всі біди, які находили на тебе від юности твоєї донині.	forasmuch as thou lovest them that hate thee, and hatest them that love thee; and thou hast this day declared, that thy princes and thy servants are nothing in thy sight: for I know this day, that if Abessalom were alive, and all of us dead to-day, then it would have been right in thy sight.

І встав цар і сів біля воріт, а весь народ сповістили, що цар сидить біля воріт. І прийшов весь народ перед лице царя [до воріт]; ізраїльтяни ж розбіглися по своїх наметах.	And now arise, and go forth, and speak comfortably to thy servants; for I have sworn by the Lord, that unless thou wilt go forth to-day, there shall not a man remain with thee this night: and know for thyself, this thing will indeed be evil to thee beyond all the evil that has come upon thee from thy youth until now.

І весь народ у всіх колінах Ізраїлевих сперечався і говорив: цар [Давид] визволив нас від рук ворогів наших і звільнив нас від рук филистимлян, а тепер сам утікав із землі цієї [з царства свого] від Авессалома.	Then the king arose, and sat in the gate: and all the people reported, saying, Behold, the king sits in the gate. And all the people went in before the king to the gate; for Israel had fled every man to his tent.

Але Авессалом, якого ми помазали на царя над нами, помер на війні; чому ж тепер ви баритеся повернути царя? [І ці слова всього Ізраїля дійшли до царя.]	And all the people disputed among all the tribes of Israel, saying, King David delivered us from all our enemies, and he rescued us from the hand of the Philistines: and now he has fled from the land, and from his kingdom, and from Abessalom.

І цар Давид послав сказати священикам Садокові й Авиафарові: скажіть старійшинам Іудиним: чому ви хочете бути останніми, щоб повернути царя в дім його, тоді як слова всього Ізраїля дійшли до царя в дім його?	And Abessalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle: and now why are ye silent about bringing back the king? And the word of all Israel came to the king.

And king David sent to Sadoc and Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak to the elders of Israel, saying, Why are ye the last to bring back the king to his house? whereas the word of all Israel is come to the king to his house.

І Амессаю скажіть: чи не кость моя і плоть моя — ти? Нехай те і те зробить зі мною Бог і ще більше зробить, якщо ти не будеш воєначальником при мені, замість Іоава, назавжди!	Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: why are ye the last to bring back the king to his house?

І прихилив він серце всіх юдеїв, як однієї людини; і послали вони до царя сказати: повернися ти й усі слуги твої.	And ye shall say to Amessai, Art thou not my bone and my flesh? and now God do so to me, and more also, if thou shalt not be commander of the host before me continually in the room of Joab.

І повернувся цар, і прийшов до Йордану, а юдеї прийшли в Галгал, щоб зустріти царя і перевезти царя через Йордан.	And he bowed the heart of all the men of Juda as that of one man; and they sent to the king, saying, Return thou, and all thy servants.

І поспішив Семей, син Гери, веніамитянин з Бахурима, і пішов з юдеями назустріч царю Давиду,	And the king returned, and came as far as Jordan. And the men of Juda came to Galgala on their way to meet the king, to cause the king to pass over Jordan.

And Semei the son of Gera fell on his face before the king, as he went over Jordan;

бо знає раб твій, що згрішив, і ось, нині я прийшов перший з усього дому Йосифового, щоб вийти назустріч господареві моєму царю.	and said to the king, Let not my lord now impute iniquity, and remember not all the iniquity of thy servant in the day in which my lord went out from Jerusalem, so that the king should mind it.

І відповів Авесса, син Саруїн, і сказав: невже Семей не помре за те, що лихословив помазаника Господнього?	For thy servant knows that I have sinned: and, behold, I am come to-day before all Israel and the house of Joseph, to go down and meet my lord the king.

І сказав Давид: що мені і вам, сини Саруїни, що ви робитеся нині мені наклепниками? Чи нині умертвляти кого-небудь в Ізраїлі? Чи не бачу я, що нині я — цар над Ізраїлем?	And Abessai the son of Saruia answered and said, Shall not Semei therefore be put to death, because he cursed the Lord's anointed?

І сказав цар Семею: ти не помреш. І поклявся йому цар.	And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Saruia, that ye as it were lie in wait against me this day? to-day no man in Israel shall be put to death, for I know not if I this day reign over Israel.

І Мемфивосфей, син [Іонафана, сина] Саулового, вийшов назустріч цареві. Він не омивав ніг своїх, [не обрізував нігтів,] не піклувався про бороду свою і не мив одягу свого з того дня, як вийшов цар, до дня, коли він повернувся з миром.	And the king said to Semei, Thou shalt not die: and the king swore to him.

Коли він вийшов з Єрусалима назустріч царю, цар сказав йому: чому ти, Мемфивосфею, не пішов зі мною?	And Memphibosthe the son of Saul's son went down to meet the king, and had not dressed his feet, nor pared his nails, nor shaved himself, neither had he washed his garments, from the day that the king departed, until the day when he arrived in peace.

And it came to pass when he went into Jerusalem to meet the king, that the king said to him, Why didst thou not go with me, Memphibosthe?

Але господар мій цар, як ангел Божий; роби, що тобі угодно;	And Memphibosthe said to him, My lord, O king, my servant deceived me; for thy servant said to him, Saddle me the ass, and I will ride upon it, and go with the king; for thy servant is lame.

хоча весь дім батька мого був повинен умерти перед господарем моїм царем, але ти посадив раба твого між тими, хто їсть за столом твоїм; яке ж маю я право скаржитися ще перед царем?	And he has dealt deceitfully with thy servant to my lord the king: but my lord the king is as an angel of God, and do thou that which is good in thine eyes.

І сказав йому цар: до чого ти говориш усе це? я сказав, щоб ти і Сива розділили між собою поля.	For all the house of my father were but as dead men before my lord the king; yet thou hast set thy servant among them that eat at thy table: and what right have I any longer even to cry to the king?

Але Мемфивосфей відповів цареві: нехай він візьме навіть усе, після того як господар мій цар з миром повернувся в дім свій.	And the king said to him, Why speakest thou any longer of thy matters? I have said, Thou and Siba shall divide the land.

І Верзеллій галаадитянин прийшов з Роглима і перейшов із царем Йордан, щоб провести його за Йордан.	And Memphibosthe said to the king, Yea, let him take all, since my lord the king has come in peace to his house.

Верзеллій же був дуже старий, років вісімдесяти. Він постачав царя продовольством під час перебування його в Маханаїмі, тому що був людиною багатою.	And Berzelli the Galaadite came down from Rogellim, and crossed over Jordan with the king, that he might conduct the king over Jordan.

І сказав цар Верзеллію: йди зі мною, і я буду годувати тебе в Єрусалимі.	And Berzelli was a very old man, eighty years old; and he had maintained the king when he dwelt in Manaim; for he was a very great man.

Але Верзеллій відповів цареві: чи довго мені залишилося жити, щоб іти з царем в Єрусалим?	And the king said to Berzelli, Thou shalt go over with me, and I will nourish thine old age with me in Jerusalem.

Навіщо ж рабу твоєму бути за тягар господарю моєму царю?	And Berzelli said to the king, How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

Ще трохи пройде раб твій з царем за Йордан; за що ж царю нагороджувати мене такою милістю?	I am this day eighty years old: can I then distinguish between good and evil? Can thy servant taste any longer what I eat or drink? can I any longer hear the voice of singing men or singing women? and wherefore shall thy servant any longer be a burden to my lord the king?

Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why does the king return me this recompense?

Let, I pray thee, thy servant remain, and I will die in my city, by the tomb of my father and of my mother. And, behold, thy servant Chamaam shall go over with my lord the king; and do thou to him as it seems good in thine eyes.

І перейшов весь народ Йордан, і цар також. І поцілував цар Верзеллія і благословив його, і він повернувся в місце своє.	And the king said, Let Chamaam go over with me, and I will do to him what is good in my sight; and whatsoever thou shalt choose at my hand, I will do for thee.

І вирушив цар у Галгал, рушив з ним і Кимгам; і весь народ юдейський проводжав царя, і половина народу ізраїльського.	And all the people went over Jordan, and the king went over; and the king kissed Berzelli, and blessed him; and he returned to his place.

І ось, усі ізраїльтяни прийшли до царя і сказали цареві: навіщо брати наші, мужі Іудині, викрали тебе і провели царя і дім його і всіх людей Давида з ним через Йордан?	And the king went over to Galgala, and Chamaam went over with him: and all the men of Juda went over with the king, and also half the people of Israel.

І відповіли всі мужі Іудині ізраїльтянам: тому, що цар ближній нам; і через що сердитися вам на це? Хіба ми що-небудь з’їли в царя, або одержали від нього подарунки? [Або від податків звільнив він нас?]	And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and said to the king, Why have our brethren the men of Juda stolen thee away, and caused the king and all his house to pass over Jordan, and all the men of David with him?

І відповіли ізраїльтяни мужам Іудиним і сказали: ми десять частин у царя, також і в Давида ми більше, ніж ви; [ми первісток, а не ви;] навіщо ж ви принизили нас? Чи не нам належало перше слово про те, щоб повернути нашого царя? Але слово мужів Іудиних було сильнішим, ніж слово ізраїльтян.	And all the men of Juda answered the men of Israel, and said, Because the king is near of kin to us: and why were you thus angry concerning this matter? have we indeed eaten of the king's food? or has he given us a gift, or has he sent us a portion?
Глава 20	Chapter 20

1	1
Там випадково знаходилася одна негідна людина, на ім’я Савей, син Бихри, веніамитянин; він засурмив трубою і сказав: немає нам частини у Давида, і немає нам частки у сині Ієссеєвому; усі по наметах своїх, ізраїльтяни!	And there was a transgressor so called there, and his name was Sabee, a Benjamite, the son of Bochori: and he blew the trumpet, and said, We have no portion in David, neither have we any inheritance in the son of Jessæ: to thy tents, O Israel, every one.

І відокремилися всі ізраїльтяни від Давида і пішли за Савеєм, сином Бихри; юдеї ж залишилися на боці царя свого, від Йордану до Єрусалима.	And all the men of Israel went up from following David after Sabee the son of Bochori: but the men of Juda adhered to their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.

І прийшов Давид у свій дім в Єрусалимі, і взяв цар десять дружин наложниць, яких він залишав стерегти дім, і помістив їх в особливий дім під нагляд, і утримував їх, але не ходив до них. І утримувалися вони там до дня смерти своєї, живучи як вдови.	And David went into his house at Jerusalem: and the king took the ten women his concubines, whom he had left to keep the house, and he put them in a place of custody, and maintained them, and went not in to them; and they were kept living as widows, till the day of their death.

І сказав Давид Амессаю: склич до мене юдеїв протягом трьох днів і сам з’явися сюди.	And the king said to Amessai, Call to me the men of Juda for three days, and do thou be present here.

І пішов Амессай скликати юдеїв, але забарився більше призначеного йому часу.	And Amessai went to call Juda, and delayed beyond the time which David appointed him.

Тоді Давид сказав Авессі: тепер наробить нам зла Савей, син Бихри, більше, ніж Авессалом; візьми ти слуг господаря твого і переслідуй його, щоб він не знайшов собі укріплених міст і не сховався від очей наших.	And David said to Amessai, Now shall Sabee the son of Bochori do us more harm than Abessalom: now then take thou with thee the servants of thy lord, and follow after him, lest he find for himself strong cities, so will he blind our eyes.

І вийшли за ним люди Іоавові, і хелефеї і фелефеї, і всі хоробрі пішли з Єрусалима переслідувати Савея, сина Бихри.	And there went out after him Amessai and the men of Joab, and the Cherethites, and the Phelethites, and all the mighty men: and they went out from Jerusalem to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori.

І коли вони були поблизу великого каменя, біля Гаваона, то зустрівся з ними Амессай. Іоав був одягнений у військовий одяг свій і оперезаний мечем, що висів при стегні в піхвах і який легко виходив з них і входив.	And they were by the great stone that is in Gabaon: and Amessai went in before them: and Joab had upon him a military cloak over his apparel, and over it he was girded with a dagger fastened upon his loins in its scabbard: and the dagger came out, it even came out and fell.

And Amessai observed not the dagger that was in the hand of Joab: and Joab smote him with it on the loins, and his bowels were shed out upon the ground, and he did not repeat the blow, and he died: and Joab and Abessai his brother pursued after Sabee the son of Bochori.

Один зі слуг Іоавових стояв над Амессаєм і говорив: той, хто відданий Іоаву і хто за Давида, нехай іде за Іоавом!	And there stood over him one of the servants of Joab, and said, Who is he that is for Joab, and who is on the side of David following Joab?

Амессай же [мертвий] лежав у крові серед дороги; і той чоловік, побачивши, що весь народ зупиняється над ним, стягнув Амессая з дороги в поле і накинув на нього одяг, оскільки він бачив, що кожен, хто минав, зупинявся над ним.	And Amessai was weltering in blood in the midst of the way. And a man saw that all the people stood still; and he removed Amessai out of the path into a field, and he cast a garment upon him, because he saw every one that came to him standing still.

Але коли він був стягнутий з дороги, то весь народ ізраїльський пішов слідом за Іоавом переслідувати Савея, сина Бихри.	And when he was quickly removed from the road, every man of Israel passed after Joab to pursue after Sabee the son of Bochori.

А він пройшов через усі коліна Ізраїльські до Авела-Беф-Мааха і через весь Берим; і [всі жителі міст] збиралися і йшли за ним.	And he went through all the tribes of Israel to Abel, and to Bethmacha; and all in Charri too were assembled, and followed after him.

І прийшли й обложили його в Авелі-Беф-Мааху; і насипали вал перед містом і підступили до стіни, і всі люди, які були з Іоавом, намагалися зруйнувати стіну.	And they came and besieged him in Abel and Phermacha: and they raised a mound against the city and it stood close to the wall; and all the people with Joab proposed to throw down the wall.

Нехай запитають в Авелі: чи залишилися?]	And she spoke, saying, Of old time they said thus, Surely one was asked in Abel, and Dan, whether the faithful in Israel failed in what they purposed; they will surely ask in Abel, even in like manner, whether they have failed.

Я з мирних, вірних міст Ізраїля; а ти хочеш знищити місто, і притому матір [міст] в Ізраїлі; для чого тобі руйнувати насліддя Господнє?	I am a peaceable one of the strong ones in Israel; but thou seekest to destroy a city and a mother-city in Israel: why dost thou seek to ruin the inheritance of the Lord?

І відповів Іоав і сказав: нехай не буде цього від мене, щоб я знищив або зруйнував!	And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should ruin or destroy.
21	21
Це не так; але чоловік з гори Єфремової, на ім’я Савей, син Бихри, підняв руку свою на царя Давида; видайте мені його одного, і я відступлю від міста. І сказала жінка Іоаву: ось, голова його буде тобі кинута зі стіни.	Is not the case thus, that a man of mount Ephraim, Sabee son of Bochori by name, has even lifted up his hand against king David? Give him only to me, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said to Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

І пішла жінка до всього народу зі своїм розумним словом [і говорила до всього міста, щоб відтяти голову Савею, синові Бихри]; і відтяли голову Савею, синові Бихри, і кинули Іоаву. Тоді [Іоав] засурмив трубою, і розійшлися від міста всі [люди] по своїх наметах; Іоав же повернувся в Єрусалим до царя.	And the woman went in to all the people, and she spoke to all the city in her wisdom; and they took off the head of Sabee the son of Bochori; and took it away and threw it to Joab: and he blew the trumpet, and the people separated from the city away from him, every man to his tent: and Joab returned to Jerusalem to the king.

І був Іоав поставлений над усім військом ізраїльським, а Ванея, син Іодаїв, — над хелефеями і над фелефеями;	And Joab was over all the forces of Israel: and Banaias the son of Jodae was over the Cherethites and over the Phelethites.

Глава 21	Chapter 21

1	1
Був голод на землі у дні Давида три роки, рік за роком. І запитав Давид Господа. І сказав Господь: це заради Саула і кровожерливого дому його, за те, що він умертвив гаваонитян.	And there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David sought the face of the Lord. And the Lord said, There is guilt upon Saul and his house because of his bloody murder, whereby he slew the Gabaonites.

Тоді цар покликав гаваонитян і говорив з ними. Гаваонитяни були не із синів Ізраїлевих, але із залишків аморреїв; ізраїльтяни ж дали їм клятву, але Саул хотів знищити їх через ревність свою за нащадків Ізраїля й Іуди.	And king David called the Gabaonites, and said to them;—(now the Gabaonites are not the children of Israel, but are of the remnant of the Amorite, and the children of Israel had sworn to them: but Saul sought to smite them in his zeal for the children of Israel and Juda.)

І сказав Давид гаваонитянам: що мені зробити для вас, і чим примирити вас, щоб ви благословили насліддя Господнє?	And David said to the Gabaonites, What shall I do to you? and wherewithal shall I make atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord?

І сказали йому гаваонитяни: не потрібно нам ні срібла, ні золота від Саула, або від дому його, і не потрібно нам, щоб умертвили когось в Ізраїлі. Він сказав: чого ж ви хочете? я зроблю для вас.	And the Gabaonites said to him, We have no question about silver or gold with Saul and with his house; and there is no man for us to put to death in Israel.

І сказали вони царю: того чоловіка, який губив нас і хотів знищити нас, щоб не було нас у жодному з наділів Ізраїлевих, —	And he said, What say ye? speak, and I will do it for you. And they said to the king, The man who would have made an end of us, and persecuted us, who plotted against us to destroy us, let us utterly destroy him, so that he shall have no standing in all the coasts of Israel.

з його нащадків видай нам сім чоловік, і ми повісимо їх [на сонці] перед Господом біля Гиви Саула, обраного Господом. І сказав цар: я видам.	Let one give us seven men of his sons, and let us hang them up in the sun to the Lord in Gabaon of Saul, as chosen out for the Lord. And the king said, I will give them.

Але пощадив цар Мемфивосфея, сина Іонафана, сина Саулового, заради клятви ім’ям Господнім, яка була між ними, між Давидом та Іонафаном, сином Сауловим.	But the king spared Memphibosthe son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the oath of the Lord that was between them, even between David and Jonathan the son of Saul.

І взяв цар двох синів Рицпи, дочки Айя, яка народила Саулу Армона і Мемфивосфея, і п’ять синів Мелхоли, дочки Саулової, яких вона народила Адриелу, синові Верзеллія з Мехоли,	And the king took the two sons of Respha the daughter of Aia, whom she bore to Saul, Hermonoi and Memphibosthe, and the five sons of Michol daughter of Saul, whom she bore to Esdriel son of Berzelli the Moülathite.

і віддав їх у руки гаваонитян, і вони повісили їх [на сонці] на горі перед Господом. І загинули всі сім разом; вони умертвлені в перші дні жнив, на початку жнив ячменю.	And he gave them into the hand of the Gabaonites, and they hanged them up to the sun in the mountain before the Lord: and they fell, even the seven together: moreover they were put to death in the days of harvest at the commencement, in the beginning of barley-harvest.

And Respha the daughter of Aia took sackcloth, and fixed it for herself on the rock in the beginning of barley harvest, until water dropped upon them out of heaven: and she did not suffer the birds of the air to rest upon them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.

І донесли Давиду, що зробила Рицпа, дочка Айя, наложниця Саула. [І зотліли вони; і взяв їх Дан, син Іої, з нащадків велетнів.]	And it was told David what Respha the daughter of Aia the concubine of Saul had done, and they were faint, and Dan the son of Joa of the offspring of the giants overtook them.

І пішов Давид і взяв кістки Саула і кістки Іонафана, сина його, у жителів Іависа галаадського, які таємно взяли їх із площі Беф-Сана, де вони були повішені филистимлянами, коли убили филистимляни Саула на Гелвуї.	And David went and took the bones of Saul, and the bones of Jonathan his son, from the men of the sons of Jabis Galaad, who stole them from the street of Bæthsan; for the Philistines set them there in the day in which the Philistines smote Saul in Gelbue.

І переніс він звідти кістки Саула і кістки Іонафана, сина його; і зібрали кістки повішених [на сонці].	And he carried up thence the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, and gathered the bones of them that had been hanged.

І поховали кістки Саула та Іонафана, сина його, [і кістки повішених на сонці] у землі Веніаміновій, у Цела, у гробі Киса, батька його. І зробили все, що повелів цар, і змилостивився Бог над країною після того.	And they buried the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son, and the bones of them that had been hanged, in the land of Benjamin in the hill, in the sepulchre of Cis his father; and they did all things that the king commanded: and after this God hearkened to the prayers of the land.

І почалася знову війна між филистимлянами й ізраїльтянами. І вийшов Давид і слуги його з ним, і воювали з филистимлянами; і Давид втомився.	And there was yet war between the Philistines and Israel: and David went down and his servants with him, and they fought with the Philistines, and David went.
16	16
Тоді Ієсвий, один з нащадків рефаїмів, у якого спис був вагою в триста сиклів міді і який був оперезаний новим мечем, хотів уразити Давида.	And Jesbi, who was of the progeny of Rapha, and the head of whose spear was three hundred shekels of brass in weight, who also was girt with a club, even he thought to smite David.

Then the men of David swore, saying, Thou shalt not any longer go out with us to battle, and thou shalt not quench the lamp of Israel.

And there was a battle in Rom with the Philistines; and Eleanan son of Ariorgim the Bethleemite slew Goliath the Gittite; and the staff of his spear was as a weaver's beam.

І заспівав Давид пісню Господу в день, коли Господь визволив його від руки усіх ворогів його і від руки Саула, і сказав:	And David spoke to the Lord the words of this song, in the day in which the Lord rescued him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul.

Господь — твердиня моя і кріпкість моя і спаситель мій.	And the song was thus: O Lord, my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer,

Бог мій — скеля моя; на Нього я уповаю; щит мій, ріг спасіння мого, огородження моє і притулок мій; Спасителю мій, від лих Ти визволив мене!	my God; he shall be to me my guard, I will trust in him: he is my protector, and the horn of my salvation, my helper, and my sure refuge; thou shalt save me from the unjust man.

Закличу Господа всехвального і від ворогів моїх спасуся.	I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised, and I shall be saved from my enemies.

Обняли мене хвилі смерти, і потоки беззаконня устрашили мене;	For the troubles of death compassed me, the floods of iniquity amazed me:

кайдани пекла облягли мене, і сіті смерти обплутали мене.	the pangs of death surrounded me, the agonies of death prevented me.

Але в тісноті моїй я прикликав Господа і до Бога мого воззвав, і Він почув із [святого] чертога Свого голос мій, і волання моє дійшло до слуху Його.	When I am afflicted I will call upon the Lord, and will cry to my God, and he shall hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry shall come into his ears.

Затряслася, захиталася земля, здригнулися і стряслися основи небес, бо розгнівався [на них Господь].	And the earth was troubled and quaked, and the foundations of heaven were confounded and torn asunder, because the Lord was wroth with them.

Піднявся дим від гніву Його і з вуст Його вогонь, що поїдає; розпечені вуглини сипалися від Нього.	There went up a smoke in his wrath, and fire out of his mouth devours: coals were kindled at it.
10	10
Нахилив Він небеса і зійшов; і морок під ногами Його;	And he bowed the heavens, and came down, and there was darkness under his feet.
11	11
і возсів на херувимах, і полетів, і понісся на крилах вітру;	And he rode upon the cherubs and did fly, and was seen upon the wings of the wind.

і мороком покрив Себе, як сінню, згустивши води хмар небесних;	And he made darkness his hiding-place; his tabernacle round about him was the darkness of waters, he condensed it with the clouds of the air.

від блискання перед Ним розпалювалися вуглини вогненні.	At the brightness before him coals of fire were kindled.

Загримів з небес Господь, і Всевишній дав глас Свій;	The Lord thundered out of heaven, and the Most High uttered his voice.

пустив стріли і розсіяв їх; [блиснув] блискавкою і знищив їх.	And he sent forth arrows, and scattered them, and he flashed lightning, and dismayed them.

І відкрилися джерела моря, оголилися основи всесвіту від грізного гласу Господа, від подуву духу гніву Його.	And the channels of the sea were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered, at the rebuke of the Lord, at the blast of the breath of his anger.

Простер Він руку з висоти і взяв мене, і вивів мене з вод великих;	He sent from above and took me; he drew me out of many waters.

визволив мене від ворога мого сильного, від ненависників моїх, які були сильніші за мене.	He delivered me from my strong enemies, from them that hated me, for they were stronger than I.

Вони повстали на мене в день біди моєї; але Господь був опорою для мене	The days of my affliction prevented me; but the Lord was my stay.

і вивів мене на просторе місце, визволив мене, бо Він благоволить до мене.	And he brought me into a wide place, and rescued me, because he delighted in me.

Воздав мені Господь за правдою моєю, за чистотою рук моїх нагородив мене.	And the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness; even according to the purity of my hands did he recompense me.

Бо я зберігав путі Господа і не був нечестивим перед Богом моїм,	Because I kept the ways of the Lord, and did not wickedly depart from my God.

бо всі заповіді Його переді мною, і від уставів Його я не відступав,	For all his judgments and his ordinances were before me: I departed not from them.

і був непорочним перед Ним, і остерігався, щоб не згрішити мені.	And I shall be blameless before him, and will keep myself from my iniquity.

І воздав мені Господь за правдою моєю, за чистотою моєю перед очима Його.	And the Lord will recompense me according to my righteousness, and according to the purity of my hands in his eye-sight.

З милостивим Ти чиниш милостиво, з мужем щирим — щиро,	With the holy thou wilt be holy, and with the perfect man thou wilt be perfect,

з чистим — чисто, а з лукавим — за лукавством його.	and with the excellent thou wilt be excellent, and with the froward thou wilt be froward.

Людей пригноблених Ти спасаєш і поглядом Своїм принижуєш гордовитих.	And thou wilt save the poor people, and wilt bring down the eyes of the haughty.

Ти, Господи, світильник мій; Господь просвічує темряву мою.	For thou, Lord, art my lamp, and the Lord shall shine forth to me in my darkness.

З Тобою я вражаю військо; з Богом моїм піднімаюся на стіну.	For by thee shall I run as a girded man, and by my God shall I leap over a wall.

Бог! — непорочна путь Його, чисте слово Господа, щит Він для всіх, які надіються на Нього.	As for the Mighty One, his way is blameless: the word of the Lord is strong and tried in the fire: he is a protector to all that put their trust in him.

Бо хто Бог, крім Господа, і хто захист, крім Бога нашого?	Who is strong, but the Lord? and who will be a Creator except our God?

Бог підперезує мене силою, влаштовує мені вірну путь;	It is the Mighty One who strengthens me with might, and has prepared my way without fault.

робить ноги мої, як оленячі, і на висотах поставляє мене;	He makes my feet like harts' feet, and sets me upon the high places.

Я ганяюся за ворогами моїми і знищую їх, і не повертаюся, доки не знищу їх;	I will pursue my enemies, and will utterly destroy them; and I will not turn again till I have consumed them.

і знищую їх і вражаю їх, і не встають і падають під ноги мої.	And I will crush them, and they shall not rise; and they shall fall under my feet.

Ти підперезуєш мене силою для війни і знищуєш переді мною тих, хто повстає проти мене;	And thou shalt strengthen me with power for the war; thou shalt cause them that rise up against me to bow down under me.

Ти повертаєш до мене тил ворогів моїх, і я знищую ненависників моїх.	And thou hast caused mine enemies to flee before me, even them that hated me, and thou hast slain them.

Іноплемінники бліднуть і тремтять в укріпленнях своїх.	The strange children shall be cast away, and shall be overthrown out of their hiding-places.

Живий Господь і благословенний захисник мій! Нехай буде звеличений Бог, пристановище спасіння мого,	The Lord lives, and blessed be my guardian, and my God, my strong keeper, shall be exalted.

Бог, Який мститься за мене і підкорює мені народи	The Lord who avenges me is strong, chastening the nations under me,

і визволяє мене від ворогів моїх! Над тими, що повстають проти мене, Ти підняв мене; від людини жорстокої Ти визволив мене.	and bringing me out from my enemies: and thou shalt set me on high from among those that rise up against me: thou shalt deliver me from the violent man.

За те я буду славити Тебе, Господи, між іноплемінниками і буду співати імені Твоєму,	Therefore will I confess to thee, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing to thy name.

що велично спасаєш царя Свого і, твориш милість помазаникові Своєму Давиду і потомству його повіки!	He magnifies the salvation of his king, and works mercy for his anointed, even for David and for his seed for ever.
Глава 23	Chapter 23

1	1
Ось останні слова Давида, висловлювання Давида, сина Ієссеєвого, висловлювання мужа, поставленого високо, помазаника Бога Якова і солодкого співака Ізраїлевого:	And these are the last words of David. Faithful is David the son of Jessæ, and faithful the man whom the Lord raised up to be the anointed of the God of Jacob, and beautiful are the psalms of Israel.

Дух Господній говорить у мені, і слово Його на язиці моєму.	The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and his word was upon my tongue.

Сказав Бог Ізраїлів, говорила про мене скеля Ізраїлева: той, хто володарює над людьми, буде праведний, володарюючи в страху Божому.	The God of Israel says, A watchman out of Israel spoke to me a parable: I said among men, How will ye strengthen the fear of the anointed?

І як на світанку ранковому, при сході сонця на безхмарному небі, від сяйва після дощу виростає трава з землі,	And in the morning light of God, let the sun arise in the morning, from the light of which the Lord passed on, and as it were from the rain of the tender grass upon the earth.

чи не так дім мій у Бога? Бо завіт вічний уклав Він зі мною, міцний і непорушний. Чи не так виходить від Нього все спасіння моє і все бажання моє?	For my house is not so with the Mighty One: for he has made an everlasting covenant with me, ready, guarded at every time; for all my salvation and all my desire is, that the wicked should not flourish.

А нечестиві будуть, як викинуте терня, яке не беруть рукою;	All these are as a thorn thrust forth, for they shall not be taken with the hand,

але хто торкається його, озброюється залізом або деревом списа, і вогнем спалює його на місці.	and a man shall not labour among them; and one shall have that which is fully armed with iron, and the staff of a spear, and he shall burn them with fire, and they shall be burnt in their shame.

Ось імена хоробрих у Давида: Ісбосеф ахаманитянин, головний із трьох; він підняв спис свій на вісімсот чоловік і вразив їх в один раз.	These are the names of the mighty men of David: Jebosthe the Chananite is a captain of the third part: Adinon the Asonite, he drew his sword against eight hundred soldiers at once.

За ним Єлеазар, син Додо, сина Ахохи, із трьох хоробрих, які були з Давидом, коли вони осудженням викликали филистимлян, які зібралися на війну;	And after him Eleanan the son of his uncle, son of Dudi who was among the three mighty men with David; and when he defied the Philistines they were gathered there to war, and the men of Israel went up.

ізраїльтяни вийшли проти них, і він став і вражав филистимлян до того, що рука його стомилася і прилипла до меча. І дарував Господь у той день велику перемогу, і народ пішов за ним тільки для того, щоб оббирати вбитих.	He arose and smote the Philistines, until his hand was weary, and his hand clave to the sword: and the Lord wrought a great salvation in that day, and the people rested behind him only to strip the slain.

За ним Шамма, син Аги, гараритянин. Коли филистимляни зібралися у Фириї, де було поле, засіяне сочевицею, і народ побіг від филистимлян,	And after him Samaia the son of Asa the Arachite: and the Philistines were gathered to Theria; and there was there a portion of ground full of lentiles; and the people fled before the Philistines.

то він став серед поля і зберіг його і вразив филистимлян. І дарував тоді Господь велику перемогу.	And he stood firm in the midst of the portion, and rescued it, and smote the Philistines; and the Lord wrought a great deliverance.

Троє цих головних із тридцяти вождів пішли і ввійшли під час жнив до Давида в печеру Одоллам, коли юрби филистимлян стояли в долині рефаїмів.	And three out of the thirty went down, and came to Cason to David, to the cave of Odollam; and there was an army of the Philistines, and they encamped in the valley of Raphain.

Давид був тоді в укріпленому місці, а загін филистимлян — у Вифлеємі.	And David was then in the strong hold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethleem.

І захотів Давид пити, і сказав: хто напоїть мене водою з колодязя Вифлеємського, що біля воріт?	And David longed, and said, Who will give me water to drink out of the well that is in Bethleem by the gate? now the band of the Philistines was then in Bethleem.

Тоді троє цих хоробрих пробилися крізь стан филистимський і почерпнули води з колодязя Вифлеємського, що біля воріт, і взяли і принесли Давиду. Але він не захотів пити її і вилив її у славу Господа,	And the three mighty men broke through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well that was in Bethleem in the gate: and they took it, and brought it to David, and he would not drink it, but poured it out before the Lord.

і сказав: збережи мене Господи, щоб я зробив це! чи не кров це людей, які ходили з небезпекою для власного життя? І не захотів пити її. Ось що зробили ці троє хоробрих!	And he said, O Lord, forbid that I should do this, that I should drink the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives: and he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.

Гнів Господній знову запалав на ізраїльтян, і побудив він проти них Давида сказати: піди, порахуй Ізраїля й Іуду.	And the Lord caused his anger to burn forth again in Israel, and Satan stirred up David against them, saying, Go, number Israel and Juda.
2	2
І сказав цар Іоаву воєначальникові, який був при ньому: пройди по всіх колінах Ізраїлевих [і Іудиних] від Дана до Вирсавії, і порахуй народ, щоб знати мені кількість народу.	And the king said to Joab commander of the host, who was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel and Juda, from Dan even to Bersabee, and number the people, and I will know the number of the people.

І сказав Іоав царю: Господь Бог твій нехай примножить стільки народу, скільки є, і ще у сто разів стільки, а очі господаря мого царя нехай побачать це; але для чого господар мій цар бажає цієї справи?	And Joab said to the king, Now may the Lord add to the people a hundred-fold as many as they are, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it: but why does my lord the king desire this thing?

Але слово царя до Іоава і воєначальників перемогло; і пішов Іоав з воєначальниками від царя рахувати народ ізраїльський.	Nevertheless the word of the king prevailed against Joab and the captains of the host: And Joab and the captains of the host went out before the king to number the people of Israel.

І перейшли вони Йордан і зупинилися в Ароері, на правому боці міста, що серед долини Гадової, до Іазера;	And they went over Jordan, and encamped in Aroer, on the right of the city which is in the midst of the valley of Gad and Eliezer.

і прийшли в Галаад і в землю Тахтим-Ходши; і прийшли в Дан-Яан і обійшли Сидон;	And they came to Galaad, and into the land of Thabason, which is Adasai, and they came to Danidan and Udan, and compassed Sidon.

і прийшли до укріплення Тира і в усі міста хивеян і хананеян і вийшли на південь Юдеї у Вирсавію;	And they came to Mapsar of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Evite and the Chananite: and they came by the south of Juda to Bersabee.

і обійшли всю землю і прийшли через дев’ять місяців і двадцять днів у Єрусалим.	And they compassed the whole land; and they arrived at Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

І подав Іоав список народного перепису царю; і виявилося, що ізраїльтян було вісімсот тисяч чоловіків сильних, здатних до війни, а юдеян п’ятсот тисяч.	And Joab gave in the number of the census of the people to the king: and Israel consisted of eight hundred thousand men of might that drew sword; and the men of Juda, five hundred thousand fighting men.

І здригнулося серце Давидове після того, як він порахував народ. І сказав Давид Господу: тяжко згрішив я, вчинивши так; і нині молю Тебе, Господи, прости гріх раба Твого, бо вкрай нерозумно зробив я.	And the heart of David smote him after he had numbered the people; and David said to the Lord, I have sinned grievously, O Lord, in what I have now done: remove, I pray thee, the iniquity of thy servant, for I have been exceedingly foolish.

Коли Давид устав на другий день ранком, то було слово Господа до Гада пророка, прозорливця Давида:	And David rose early in the morning, and the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, the seer, saying, Go, and speak to David, saying,

піди і скажи Давиду: так говорить Господь: три покарання пропоную Я тобі; вибери собі одне з них, яке звершилося б над тобою.	Thus saith the Lord, I bring one of three things upon thee: now choose thee one of them, and I will do it to thee.

І прийшов Гад до Давида, і сповістив йому, і сказав йому: обирай собі, чи бути голоду в країні твоїй сім років, чи щоб ти три місяці бігав від ворогів твоїх, і вони переслідували тебе, чи щоб упродовж трьох днів була моровиця в країні твоїй? тепер розсуди і виріши, що мені відповісти Тому, Хто послав мене.	And Gad went in to David, and told him, and said to him, Choose one of these things to befal thee, whether there shall come upon thee for three years famine in thy land; or that thou shouldest flee three months before thine enemies, and they should pursue thee; or that there should be for three days mortality in thy land. Now then decide, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

І сказав Давид Гадові: тяжко мені дуже; але нехай упаду я в руки Господа, бо велике милосердя Його; тільки б у руки людські не впасти мені. [І обрав собі Давид моровицю під час жнив пшениці.]	And David said to Gad, On every side I am much straitened: let me fall now into the hands of the Lord, for his compassions are very many; and let me not fall into the hands of man.

І послав Господь моровицю на ізраїльтян від ранку до призначеного часу; [і почалася моровиця в народі] і померло з народу, від Дана до Вирсавії, сімдесят тисяч чоловік.	So David chose for himself the mortality: and they were the days of wheat-harvest; and the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel from morning till noon, and the plague began among the people; and there died of the people from Dan even to Bersabee seventy thousand men.

І простяг ангел [Божий] руку свою на Єрусалим, щоб спустошити його; але Господь пожалів про біду і сказав ангелові, який уражав народ: досить, тепер опусти руку твою. Ангел же Господній був тоді біля току Орни ієвусеянина.	And the angel of the Lord stretched out his hand against Jerusalem to destroy it, and the Lord repented of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough now, withhold thine hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.

І сказав Давид Господу, коли побачив ангела, який уражав народ, говорячи: ось, я згрішив, я [пастир] вчинив беззаконно; а ці вівці, що зробили вони? нехай же рука Твоя обернеться на мене і на дім батька мого.	And David spoke to the Lord when he saw the angel smiting the people, and he said, Behold, it is I that have done wrong, but these sheep what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be upon me, and upon my father's house.

І прийшов у той день Гад до Давида і сказав: іди, постав жертовник Господу на току Орни ієвусеянина.	And Gad came to David in that day, and said to him, Go up, and set up to the Lord an altar in the threshing-floor of Orna the Jebusite.
19	19
І пішов Давид за словом Гада [пророка], як повелів Господь.	And David went up according to the word of Gad, as the Lord commanded him.
20	20
І глянув Орна і побачив царя і слуг його, які йшли до нього, і вийшов Орна й уклонився цареві лицем своїм до землі.	And Orna looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on before him: and Orna went forth, and did obeisance to the king with his face to the earth.
21	21
І сказав Орна: навіщо прийшов господар мій цар до раба свого? І сказав Давид: купити в тебе тік для спорудження жертовника Господу, щоб припинилось ураження народу.	And Orna said, Why has my lord the king come to his servant? and David said, To buy of thee the threshing-floor, in order to build an altar to the Lord, that the plague may be restrained from off the people.
22	22
І сказав Орна Давиду: нехай візьме і принесе в жертву, господар мій, цар, що йому вгодно. Ось воли для всепалення і вози й упряж волова на дрова.	And Orna said to David, Let my lord the king take and offer to the Lord that which is good in his eyes: behold, here are oxen for a whole-burnt-offering, and the wheels and furniture of the oxen for wood.

Все це, царю, Орна віддає цареві. Ще сказав Орна царю: Господь Бог твій нехай буде милостивим до тебе!	Orna gave all to the king: and Orna said to the king, The Lord thy God bless thee.
24	24
Але цар сказав Орні: ні, я заплачу́ тобі, що коштує, і не принесу Господу Богу моєму жертви, взятої задарма. І купив Давид тік і волів за п’ятдесят сиклів срібла.	And the king said to Orna, Nay, but I will surely buy it of thee at a fair price, and I will not offer to the Lord my God a whole-burnt-offering for nothing. So David purchased the threshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.
25	25
І спорудив там Давид жертовник Господу і приніс всепалення і мирні жертви. [Потім Соломон розширив жертовник, бо він був малий.] І змилостивився Господь над країною, і припинилось ураження ізраїльтян.	And David built there an altar to the Lord, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings: and Solomon made an addition to the altar afterwards, for it was little at first. And the Lord hearkened to the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
