Глава 4	Chapter 4

І почули вороги Іуди і Веніаміна, що ті, хто повернувся з полону, будують храм Господу Богу Ізраїлевому;	And they that afflicted Juda and Benjamin heard, that the children of the captivity were building a house to the Lord God of Israel.
2	2
і прийшли вони до Зоровавеля і до глав поколінь, і сказали їм: будемо і ми будувати з вами, тому що ми, як і ви, прибігаємо до Бога вашого, і Йому приносимо жертви від днів Асардана, царя Сирійського, який перевів нас сюди.	And they drew near to Zorobabel, and to the heads of families, and said to them, We will build with you; for as ye do, we seek to serve our God, and we do sacrifice to him from the days of Asaradan king of Assur, who brought us hither.

І сказали їм Зоровавель і Ісус та інші глави поколінь ізраїльських: не будувати вам разом з нами дім нашому Богу; ми одні будемо будувати дім Господу, Богу Ізраїлевому, як повелів нам цар Кир, цар Перський.	Then Zorobabel, and Jesus and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel said to them, It is not for us and you to build a house to our God, for we ourselves will build together to the Lord our God, as Cyrus the king of the Persians commanded us.

І став народ землі тієї ослаблювати руки народу юдейського і перешкоджати йому в будівлі;	And the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Juda, and hindered them in building,

і підкуповували проти них радників, щоб зруйнувати намір їхній, в усі дні Кира, царя Перського, і до царювання Дарія, царя Перського.	and continued hiring persons against them, plotting to frustrate their counsel, all the days of Cyrus king of the Persians, and until the reign of Darius king of the Persians.

А в царювання Ахашвероша, на початку царювання його, написали звинувачення на жителів Юдеї та Єрусалима.	And in the reign of Assuerus, even in the beginning of his reign, they wrote a letter against the inhabitants of Juda and Jerusalem.

І в дні Артаксеркса писали Бишлам, Мифредат, Табеєл та інші товариші їхні до Артаксеркса, царя Перського. Лист же написаний був літерами сирійськими і сирійською мовою.	And in the days of Arthasastha, Tabeel wrote peaceably to Mithradates and to the rest of his fellow-servants: the tribute-gatherer wrote to Arthasastha king of the Persians a writing in the Syrian tongue, and the same interpreted.

Рехум радник і Шимшай писар писали один лист проти Єрусалима до царя Артаксеркса такий:	Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe wrote an epistle against Jerusalem to king Arthasastha, saying,

Тоді-то. Рехум радник і Шимшай писар та інші товариші їхні, — динеї й афарсафхеї, тарпелеї, апарси, арех’яни, вавилоняни, сусанці, даги, еламитяни,	Thus has judged Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of our fellow-servants, the Dinæans, the Apharsathachæans, the Tarphalæans, the Apharsæans, the Archyæans, the Babylonians, the Susanachæans, Davæans,

та інші народи, яких переселив Аснафар [Сеннахирим] великий і славний і оселив у містах самарійських і в інших містах за рікою, та інше.	and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Assenaphar removed, and settled them in the cities of Somoron, and the rest of them beyond the river.

І ось список з листа, який послали до нього: Царю Артаксерксу — раби твої, люди, які живуть за рікою, та інше.	This is the purport of the letter, which they sent to him: Thy servants the men beyond the river to king Arthasastha.

Нехай буде відомо цареві, що юдеї, які вийшли від тебе, прийшли до нас в Єрусалим, будують це бунтівне і негідне місто, і стіни роблять, і основи їх уже відновили.	Be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from thee to us have come to Jerusalem the rebellious and wicked city, which they are building, and its walls are set in order, and they have established the foundations of it.

Нехай буде ж відомо цареві, що коли це місто буде побудоване і стіни відновлені, то ні данини, ні податку, ні мита не будуть давати, і царській скарбниці буде зроблений збиток.	Now then be it known to the king, that if that city be built up, and its walls completed, thou shalt have no tribute, neither will they pay anything, and this injures kings.

Тому що ми їмо сіль від палацу царського, і збиток для царя не можемо бачити, тому ми посилаємо донесення цареві:	And it is not lawful for us to see the dishonour of the king: therefore have we sent and made known the matter to the king;

нехай пошукають у пам’ятній книзі батьків твоїх, — і знайдеш у книзі пам’ятній, і дізнаєшся, що місто це — місто заколотне і шкідливе для царів і областей, і що відпадіння бували в ньому здавна, за що місто це і спустошене.	that examination may be made in thy fathers' book of record; and thou shalt find, and thou shalt know that that city is rebellious, and does harm to kings and countries, and there are in the midst of it from very old time refuges for runaway slaves: therefore this city has been made desolate.

Тому ми повідомляємо царя, що коли місто це буде добудоване і стіни його дороблені, то після цього не буде в тебе володіння за рікою.	We therefore declare to the king, that, if that city be built, and its walls be set up, thou shalt not have peace.

Цар послав відповідь Рехуму раднику і Шимшаю писарю й іншим товаришам їхнім, які живуть у Самарії та в інших містах зарічних: Мир… та інше.	Then the king sent to Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and the rest of their fellow-servants who dwelt in Samaria, and the rest beyond the river, saying, Peace; and he says,

Лист, який ви надіслали нам, виразно прочитаний переді мною;	The tribute-gatherer whom ye sent to us, has been called before me.

і від мене дано повеління, — і розшукували, і знайшли, що місто це здавна повставало проти царів, і відбувалися в ньому заколоти і заворушення,	And a decree has been made by me, and we have examined, and found that that city of old time exalts itself against kings, and that rebellions and desertions take place within it.
20	20
і що були в Єрусалимі царі могутні і які володіли всім заріччям, і їм давали данину, податки і мито.	And there were powerful kings in Jerusalem, and they ruled over all the country beyond the river, and abundant revenues and tribute were given to them.
21	21
Отже, дайте наказ, щоб люди ці перестали працювати, і щоб місто це не будувалося, доки від мене не буде дано повеління.	Now therefore make a decree to stop the work of those men, and that city shall no more be built.
22	22
І будьте обережні, щоб не зробити в цьому недогляду. Для чого допускати розмноження шкідливого на шкоду царям?	See that ye be careful of the decree, not to be remiss concerning this matter, lest at any time destruction should abound to the harm of kings.

Як тільки цей лист царя Артаксеркса був прочитаний перед Рехумом і Шимшаєм писарем і товаришами їхніми, вони негайно пішли в Єрусалим до юдеїв, і сильною озброєною рукою припинили роботу їхню.	Then the tribute-gatherer of king Arthasastha read the letter before Reum the chancellor, and Sampsa the scribe, and his fellow-servants: and they went in haste to Jerusalem and through Juda, and caused them to cease with horses and an armed force.

Тоді зупинилася робота при домі Божому, який в Єрусалимі, і зупинка ця тривала до другого року царювання Дарія, царя Перського.	Then ceased the work of the house of God in Jerusalem, and it was at a stand until the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians.
