| Після смерти Ісуса запитували сини Ізраїлеві Господа, говорячи: хто з нас першим піде на хананеян — воювати з ними? | And it came to pass after the death of Joshua, that the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, saying, Who shall go up for us first against the Chananites, to fight against them? |

| І сказав Господь: Іуда піде; ось, Я віддаю землю в руки його. | And the Lord said, Judas shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand. |
|

|
3
|
| Іуда ж сказав Симеону, братові своєму: ввійди зі мною в жереб мій, і будемо воювати з хананеянами; і я ввійду з тобою у твій жереб. І пішов з ним Симеон. | And Judas said to his brother Symeon, Come up with me into my lot, and let us array ourselves against the Chananites, and I also will go with thee into thy lot: and Symeon went with him. |

| І пішов Іуда, і віддав Господь хананеян і ферезеян у руки їх, і убили вони з них під Везеком десять тисяч чоловік. | And Judas went up; and the Lord delivered the Chananite and the Pherezite into their hands, and they smote them in Bezek to the number of ten thousand men. |

|
| У Везеку зустрілися вони з Адоні-Везеком, воювали з ним і розбили хананеян і ферезеян. | And they overtook Adonibezek in Bezek, and fought against him; and they smote the Chananite and the Pherezite. |
|

|
| Адоні-Везек побіг, але вони погналися за ним і впіймали його і відсікли великі пальці на руках його і на ногах його. | And Adonibezek fled, and they pursued after him, and took him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes. |
|

|
| Тоді сказав Адоні-Везек: сімдесят царів з відсіченими на руках і на ногах їхніх великими пальцями збирали [крихти] під столом моїм; як робив я, так і мені відплатив Бог. І привели його в Єрусалим, і він помер там. | And Adonibezek said, Seventy kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their food under my table: as I therefore have done, so God has recompensed me: and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. |

| І воювали сини Іудині проти Єрусалима і взяли його, й уразили його мечем і місто віддали вогню. | And the children of Judas fought against Jerusalem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and they burnt the city with fire. |
|

|
| Потім пішли сини Іудині воювати з хананеянами, які жили на горах і на полуденній землі і на низинних місцях. | And afterwards the children of Judas went down to fight with the Chananite dwelling in the hill country, and the south, and the plain country. |
|

|
| І пішов Іуда на хананеян, які жили в Хевроні [ім’я ж Хеврону було раніше Кириаф-Арби], і розбив Шешая, Ахимана і Фалмая [з роду Єнакового]. | And Judas went to the Chananite who dwelt in Chebron; and Chebron came out against him; and the name of Chebron before was Cariatharbocsepher: and they smote Sessi, and Achiman, and Tholmi, children of Enac. |

| Звідти пішов він проти жителів Давира; ім’я Давира було раніше Кириаф-Сефер. | And they went up thence to the inhabitants of Dabir; but the name of Dabir was before Cariathsepher, the city of Letters. |
|

|
| І сказав Халев: хто розіб’є Кириаф-Сефер і візьме його, тому віддам Ахсу, дочку мою, за дружину. | And Chaleb said, Whosoever shall smite the city of Letters, and shall first take it, I will give to him Ascha my daughter to wife. |
|

|
| І взяв його Гофониїл, син Кеназа, молодшого брата Халевового, і Халев віддав за дружину йому Ахсу, дочку свою. | And Gothoniel the younger son of Kenez the brother of Chaleb took it; and Chaleb gave him his daughter Ascha to wife. |
|

|
| Коли належало їй іти, Гофониїл навчив її просити у батька її поле, і вона зійшла з осла. Халев сказав їй: що тобі? | And it came to pass as she went in, that Gothoniel urged her to ask a field of her father; and she murmured and cried from off her ass, Thou hast sent me forth into a south land: and Chaleb said to her, What is thy request? |

| [Ахса] сказала йому: дай мені благословення; ти дав мені землю полуденну, дай мені і джерела води. І дав їй [Халев за бажанням її] джерела верхні і джерела нижні. | And Ascha said to him, Give me, I pray thee, a blessing, for thou hast sent me forth into a south land, and thou shalt give me the ransom of water: and Chaleb gave her according to her heart the ransom of the upper springs and the ransom of the low springs. |

| І сини [Іофора] кенеянина, тестя Мойсеєвого, пішли з міста Пальм із синами Іудиними в пустелю Іудину, що на південь від Арада, і прийшли й оселилися серед народу. | And the children of Jothor the Kenite the father-in-law of Moses went up from the city of palm-trees with the children of Judas, to the wilderness that is in the south of Juda, which is at the descent of Arad, and they dwelt with the people. |

| І пішов Іуда із Симеоном, братом своїм, і розбили хананеян, які жили в Цефафі, і піддали його закляттю, і тому називається місто це Хорма. | And Judas went with Symeon his brother, and smote the Chananite that inhabited Sepheth, and they utterly destroyed them; and they called the name of the city Anathema. |

| Іуда взяв також Газу з передмістями її, Аскалон з передмістями його, і Екрон з передмістями його [і Азот з околицями його]. | But Judas did not inherit Gaza nor her coasts, nor Ascalon nor her coasts, nor Accaron nor her coasts, nor Azotus nor the lands around it. |

| Господь був з Іудою, і він оволодів горою; але жителів долини не міг прогнати, тому що в них були залізні колісниці. | And the Lord was with Judas, and he inherited the mountain; for they were not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, for Rechab prevented them. |
|

|
| І віддали Халеву Хеврон, як говорив Мойсей, [і одержав він там у спадщину три міста синів Єнакових] і вигнав звідти трьох синів Єнакових. | And they gave Chebron to Chaleb, as Moses said; and thence he inherited the three cities of the children of Enac. |
|

|
| Але ієвусеїв, які жили в Єрусалимі, не вигнали сини Веніамінові, і живуть ієвусеями з синами Веніаміна в Єрусалимі до цього дня. | But the children of Benjamin did not take the inheritance of the Jebusite who dwelt in Jerusalem; and the Jebusite dwelt with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day. |

|
| І сини Йосифа пішли також на Вефиль, і Господь був з ними. | And the sons of Joseph, they also went up to Bæthel; and the Lord was with them. |
|

|
23
|
| [І зупинилися] й оглядали сини Йосифові Вефиль [ім’я ж місту було раніше Луз]. | And they encamped and surveyed Bæthel: and the name of the city before was Luza. |
|
24
|
24
|
| І побачили вартові чоловіка, який йде з міста, [і взяли його] і сказали йому: покажи нам вхід у місто, і зробимо тобі милість. | And the spies looked, and behold, a man went out of the city, and they took him; and they said to him, Shew us the way into the city, and we will deal mercifully with thee. |
|

| Він показав їм вхід у місто, і розбили вони місто мечем, а чоловіка цього і всіх родичів його відпустили. | And he shewed them the way into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and his family. |
|

|
| Чоловік цей пішов у землю хеттеян, і побудував [там] місто і нарік ім’я йому Луз. Це ім’я його по цей день. | And the man went into the land of Chettin, and built there a city, and called the name of it Luza; this is its name until this day. |
|

|
| І Манассія не вигнав жителів Бефсана [який є Скифополь] і залежних від нього міст, Фаанаха і залежних від нього міст, жителів Дора і залежних від нього міст, жителів Івлеама і залежних від нього міст, жителів Мегиддона і залежних від нього міст; і залишилися хананеяни жити в землі цій. | And Manasse did not drive out the inhabitants of Bæthsan, which is a city of Scythians, nor her towns, nor her suburbs; nor Thanac, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Dor, nor her towns; nor the inhabitant of Balac, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Magedo, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Jeblaam, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; and the Chananite began to dwell in this land. |

| Коли Ізраїль прийшов у силу, тоді зробив він хананеян данниками, але вигнати не вигнав їх. | And it came to pass when Israel was strong, that he made the Chananite tributary, but did not utterly drive them out. |
|

| І Єфрем не вигнав хананеян, які живуть у Газері; і жили хананеяни серед них у Газері [і платили їм данину]. | And Ephraim did not drive out the Chananite that dwelt in Gazer; and the Chananite dwelt in the midst of him in Gazer, and became tributary. |
|

|
| І Завулон не вигнав жителів Китрона і жителів Наглола, і жили хананеяни серед них і платили їм данину. | And Zabulon did not drive out the inhabitants of Kedron, nor the inhabitants of Domana: and the Chananite dwelt in the midst of them, and became tributary to them. |

|
| І Асир не вигнав жителів Акко [які платили йому данину, і жителів Дора] і жителів Сидона й Ахлава, Ахзива, Хелви, Афека і Рехова. | And Aser did not drive out the inhabitants of Accho, and that people became tributary to him, nor the inhabitants of Dor, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor the inhabitants of Dalaph, nor Aschazi, nor Chebda, nor Nai, nor Ereo. |

| І жив Асир серед хананеян, жителів землі тієї, бо не вигнав їх. | And Aser dwelt in the midst of the Chananite who inhabited the land, for he could not drive him out. |
|

|
| І Неффалим не вигнав жителів Вефсамиса і жителів Бефанафа і жив серед хананеян, жителів землі тієї; жителі ж Вефсамиса і Бефанафа були його данниками. | And Nephthali did not drive out the inhabitants of Bæthsamys, nor the inhabitants of Bæthanach; and Nephthali dwelt in the midst of the Chananite who inhabited the land: but the inhabitants of Bethsamys and of Bætheneth became tributary to them. |

| І притисли аморреяни синів Данових у горах, бо не давали їм сходити в долину. | And the Amorite drove out the children of Dan into the mountain, for they did not suffer them to come down into the valley. |
|

|
35
|
| І залишилися аморреяни жити на горі Херес [де ведмеді і лисиці], в Аїалоні і Шаалвимі; але рука синів Йосифових подолала [аморреян], і стали вони данниками їх. | And the Amorite began to dwell in the mountain of shells, in which are bears, and foxes, in Myrsinon, and in Thalabin; and the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon the Amorite, and he became tributary to them. |

| Межі аморреян від узвишшя Акравим і від Сели простягалися і далі. | And the border of the Amorite was from the going up of Acrabin, from the rock and upwards. |
|
Глава 2
|
Chapter 2
|

1
|
1
|
| І прийшов ангел Господній з Галгала в Бохим [і у Вефиль до дому Ізраїлевого] і сказав [їм: так говорить Господь]: Я вивів вас з Єгипту і ввів вас у землю, про яку клявся батькам вашим [дати вам], і сказав Я: «не порушу завіту Мого з вами повік; | And an angel of the Lord went up from Galgal to the place of weeping, and to Bæthel, and to the house of Israel, and said to them, Thus says the Lord, I brought you up out of Egypt, and I brought you into the land which I sware to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant that I have made with you. |

|
| і ви не вступайте в союз з жителями землі цієї; [богам їх не поклоняйтеся, ідолів їх розбийте,] жертовники їх зруйнуйте». Але ви не послухали голосу Мого. Що ви це зробили? | And ye shall make no covenant with them that dwell in this land, neither shall ye worship their gods; but ye shall destroy their graven images, ye shall pull down their altars: but ye hearkened not to my voice, for ye did these things. |

| І тому говорю Я: [не стану вже переселяти людей цих, яких Я хотів вигнати,] не вижену їх від вас, і будуть вони вам петлею, і боги їх будуть для вас сіттю. | And I said, I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be for a distress to you, and their gods shall be to you for an offence. |

| Коли ангел Господній сказав слова ці всім синам Ізраїлевим, то народ підняв голосне волання і заплакав. | And it came to pass when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. |
|

|
5
|
| Від цього і називають те місце Бохим*. Там принесли вони жертву Господу. | And they named the name of that place Weepings; and they sacrificed there to the Lord. |
|

|
6
|
| Коли Ісус розпустив народ, і пішли сини Ізраїлеві, [кожен у свій дім і] кожен у свій наділ, щоб одержати в спадщину землю, | And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his inheritance, to inherit the land. |
|
7
|
7
|
| тоді народ служив Господу в усі дні Ісуса і в усі дні старійшин, життя яких продовжилося після Ісуса і які бачили усі великі діла Господні, які Він зробив Ізраїлю. | And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived many days with Joshua, as many as knew all the great work of the Lord, what things he had wrought in Israel. |

|
| Але коли помер Ісус, син Навина, раб Господній, будучи ста десяти років, | And Joshua the son of Naue, the servant of the Lord, died, a hundred and ten years old. |
|
9
|
9
|
| і поховали його в межах наділу його у Фамнаф-Сараі, на горі Єфремовій, на північ від гори Гааша; | And they buried him in the border of his inheritance, in Thamnathares, in mount Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaas. |
|
10
|
10
|
| і коли весь народ той відійшов до батьків своїх, і постав після них інший рід, який не знав Господа і діл Його, які Він чинив Ізраїлю, — | And all that generation were laid to their fathers: and another generation rose up after them, who knew not the Lord, nor yet the work which he wrought in Israel. |
|

11
|
| тоді сини Ізраїлеві стали чинити зле перед очима Господа і стали служити Ваалу; | And the children of Israel wrought evil before the Lord, and served Baalim. |
|
12
|
12
|
| залишили Господа Бога батьків своїх, Який вивів їх із землі Єгипетської, і звернулися до інших богів, богів народів, які оточували їх, і стали поклонятися їм, і роздратували Господа; | And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and walked after other gods, of the gods of the nations round about them; and they worshipped them. |

|
| залишили Господа і стали служити Ваалу й Астарті. | And they provoked the Lord, and forsook him, and served Baal and the Astartes. |
|
14
|
14
|
| І запалав гнів Господа на Ізраїля, і віддав їх у руки грабіжників, і грабували їх; і віддав їх у руки ворогів, які оточували їх, і не могли вже устояти перед ворогами своїми. | And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and he gave them into the hands of the spoilers, and they spoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, and they could not any longer resist their enemies, |

| Куди б вони не пішли, рука Господня скрізь була їм на зло, як говорив їм Господь і як клявся їм Господь. І їм було дуже скрутно. | among whomsoever they went; and the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord spoke, and as the Lord sware to them; and he greatly afflicted them. |

|
| І поставив [їм] Господь суддів, які рятували їх від рук грабіжників їхніх; | And the Lord raised up judges, and the Lord saved them out of the hands of them that spoiled them: and yet they hearkened not to the judges, |
|
17
|
17
|
| але і суддів вони не слухали, а ходили блудно вслід інших богів і поклонялися їм [і дратували Господа], швидко ухилилися від путі, якою ходили батьки їхні, підкорюючись заповідям Господнім. Вони так не робили. | for they went a whoring after other gods, and worshipped them; and they turned quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked to hearken to the words of the Lord; they did not so. |

|
| Коли Господь поставляв їм суддів, то Сам Господь був із суддею і рятував їх від ворогів їхніх в усі дні судді: бо жалів їх Господь, коли чув стогін їхній від тих, що гнітили і пригноблювали їх. | And because the Lord raised them up judges, so the Lord was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved at their groaning by reason of them that besieged them and afflicted them. |

| Але як тільки помирав суддя, вони знову робили гірше за батьків своїх, ухиляючись до інших богів, слугуючи їм і поклоняючись їм. Не відставали від діл своїх і [не відступали] від непокірливої путі своєї. | And it came to pass when the judge died, that they went back, and again corrupted themselves worse than their fathers to go after other gods to serve them and to worship them: they abandoned not their devices nor their stubborn ways. |

| І запалав гнів Господній на Ізраїля, і сказав Він: за те, що народ цей переступає завіт Мій, який Я уклав з батьками їх, і не слухає голосу Мого, | And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Forasmuch as this nation has forsaken my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not hearkened to my voice, |

| і Я не стану вже виганяти від них жодного з тих народів, яких залишив Ісус, [син Навина, на землі,] коли помирав, — | therefore I will not any more cast out a man of the nations from before their face, which Joshua the son of Naue left in the land. And the Lord left them, |
|

|

|
| щоб спокушати ними Ізраїля: чи стануть вони триматися путі Господньої і ходити по ній, як додержували батьки їхні, чи ні? | to prove Israel with them, whether they would keep the way of the Lord, to walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or no. |
|

|
| І залишив Господь народи ці і не вигнав їх невдовзі і не віддав їх у руки Ісуса. | So the Lord will leave these nations, so as not to cast them out suddenly; and he delivered them not into the hand of Joshua. |
|
Глава 3
|
Chapter 3
|
|
1
|
1
|
| Ось ті народи, яких залишив Господь, щоб спокушати ними ізраїльтян, усіх, які не знали про всі війни ханаанські, — | And these are the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel with them, all that had not known the wars of Chanaan. |
|
2
|
2
|
| для того тільки, щоб знали й училися війні наступні роди синів Ізраїлевих, які раніше не знали її: | Only for the sake of the generations of Israel, to teach them war, only the men before them knew them not. |
|
3
|
3
|
| п’ять власників филистимських, усі хананеї і, сидоняни й евеї, які живуть на горі Ливан, від гори Ваал-Ермона до входу в Емаф. | The five lordships of the Phylistines, and every Chananite, and the Sidonian, and the Evite who dwelt in Libanus from the mount of Aermon to Laboemath. |

|
| Вони були залишені, щоб спокушати ними ізраїльтян і довідатися, чи підкорюються вони заповідям Господнім, які Він заповів батькам їхнім через Мойсея. | And this was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Moses. |

| І жили сини Ізраїлеві серед хананеїв, хеттеїв, аморреїв, ферезеїв, евеїв, [гергесеїв] та ієвусеїв, | And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Chananite, and the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite. |

| і брали дочок їхніх собі за дружин, і своїх дочок віддавали за синів їхніх, і служили богам їх. | And they took their daughters for wives to themselves, and they gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods. |
|

7
|
| І зробили сини Ізраїлеві зле перед очима Господа, і забули Господа Бога свого, і служили Ваалу й Астарті. | And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgot the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves. |
|
8
|
8
|
| І запалав гнів Господній на Ізраїля, і віддав їх у руки Хусарсафема, царя Месопотамського, і служили сини Ізраїлеві Хусарсафему вісім років. | And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and sold them into the hand of Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers: and the children of Israel served Chusarsathaim eight years. |

| Тоді заволали сини Ізраїлеві до Господа, і поставив Господь спасителя синам Ізраїлевим, який спас їх, Гофониїла, сина Кеназа, молодшого брата Халевового. | And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and the Lord raised up a saviour to Israel, and he saved them, Gothoniel the son of Kenez, the brother of Chaleb younger than himself. |

|
| На ньому був Дух Господній, і був він суддею Ізраїля. Він вийшов на війну [проти Хусарсафема], і віддав Господь у руки його Хусарсафема, царя Месопотамського, і перемогла рука його Хусарсафема. | And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war against Chusarsathaim: and the Lord delivered into his hand Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers, and his hand prevailed against Chusarsathaim. |

|
| І спочивала земля сорок років. І помер Гофониїл, син Кеназа. | And the land was quiet forty years; and Gothoniel the son of Kenez died. |
|
12
|
12
|
| Сини Ізраїлеві знову стали робити зле перед очима Господа, і укріпив Господь Еглона, царя Моавитського, проти ізраїльтян, за те, що вони робили лихе перед очима Господа. | And the children of Israel continued to do evil before the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglom king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil before the Lord. |

|
| Він зібрав до себе [усіх] аммонитян і амаликитян, і пішов і уразив Ізраїля, й оволоділи вони містом Пальм. | And he gathered to himself all the children of Ammon and Amalec, and went and smote Israel, and took possession of the city of Palm-trees. |
|

|
14
|
| І служили сини Ізраїлеві Еглону, царю Моавитському, вісімнадцять років. | And the children of Israel served Eglom the king of Moab eighteen years. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Тоді воззвали сини Ізраїлеві до Господа, і Господь поставив їм спасителя Аода, сина Гери, сина Ієминиєвого, який був лівшою. І послали сини Ізраїлеві з ним дари Еглону, царю Моавитському. | And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and he raised up to them a saviour, Aod the son of Gera a son of Jemeni, a man who used both hands alike: and the children of Israel sent gifts by his hand to Eglom king of Moab. |

| Аод зробив собі меч із двома вістрями, довжиною в лікоть, і підперезав його під плащем своїм до правого стегна, | And Aod made himself a dagger of two edges, of a span long, and he girded it under his cloak upon his right thigh. |
|

|
17
|
| [і прийшов,] і підніс дари Еглону, царю Моавитському; Еглон же був чоловіком дуже повним. | And he went, and brought the presents to Eglom king of Moab, and Eglom was a very handsome man. |
|

|

|
| Коли підніс Аод усі дари і випровадив людей, які принесли дари, | And it came to pass when Aod had made an end of offering his gifts, that he dismissed those that brought the gifts. |
|
19
|
19
|
| то сам повернувся від ідолів, що у Галгалі, і сказав: у мене є таємне слово до тебе, царю. Він сказав: тихіше! І вийшли від нього всі, хто стояв при ньому. | And he himself returned from the quarries that are by Galgal; and Aod said, I have a secret errand to thee, O king! and Eglom said to him, Be silent: and he sent away from his presence all who waited upon him. |

| Аод увійшов до нього: він сидів у прохолодній світлиці, що була в нього окремо. І сказав Аод: у мене є до тебе, [царю,] слово Боже. [Еглон] встав зі стільця [перед ним]. | And Aod went in to him; and he sat in his own upper summer chamber quite alone; and Aod said, I have a message from God to thee, O king: and Eglom rose up from his throne near him. |

| [Коли він встав,] Аод простяг ліву руку свою і взяв меч із правого стегна свого і встромив його в живіт його, | And it came to pass as he arose, that Aod stretched forth his left hand, and took the dagger off his right thigh, and plunged it into his belly; |

|

Тоді виступив до воріт народ Господній. | ye that are delivered from the noise of disturbers among the drawers of water; there shall they relate righteous acts: O Lord, increase righteous acts in Israel: then the people of the Lord went down to the cities. |

Нині залишив нас Господь і віддав нас у руки мадіанитян. | And Gedeon said to him, Be gracious with me, my Lord: but if the Lord is with us, why have these evils found us? and where are all his miracles, which our fathers have related to us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up out of Egypt? and now he has cast us out, and given us into the hand of Madiam. |

| Гедеон пішов і приготував козеня й опрісноків з ефи борошна; м’ясо поклав у кошик, а юшку влив у горщик і приніс до Нього під дуб і запропонував. | And Gedeon went in, and prepared a kid of the goats, and an ephah of fine flour unleavened; and he put the flesh in the basket, and poured the broth into the pot, and brought them forth to him under the turpentine tree, and drew nigh. |

| І сказав йому ангел Божий: візьми м’ясо й опрісноки, і поклади на цей камінь, і вилий юшку. Він так і зробив. | And the angel of God said to him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and put them on that rock, and pour out the broth close by: and he did so. |

| Ангел Господній простяг кінець жезла, який був у руці його, доторкнувся до м’яса й опрісноків; і вийшов вогонь з каменя і поїв м’ясо й опрісноки; і ангел Господній зник з очей його. | And the angel of the Lord stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened bread; and fire came up out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened bread, and the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. |

| І побачив Гедеон, що це ангел Господній, і сказав Гедеон: горе мені, Владико Господи! тому що я бачив ангела Господнього лицем до лиця. | And Gedeon saw that he was an angel of the Lord; and Gedeon said, Ah, ah, Lord my God! for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face. |

| Господь сказав йому: мир тобі, не бійся, не помреш. | And the Lord said to him, Peace be to thee, fear not, thou shalt not die. |

| І влаштував там Гедеон жертовник Господу і назвав його: Ієгова Шалом*. Він ще до цього дня в Офрі Авиєзеровій. | And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it The peace of the Lord, until this day, as it is still in Ephratha of the father of Esdri. |

| У ту ніч сказав йому Господь: візьми тельця зі стада батька твого й другого тельця семирічного, і зруйнуй жертовник Ваала, який у батька твого, і зрубай священне дерево, яке при ньому, | And it came to pass in that night, that the Lord said to him, Take the young bullock which thy father has, even the second bullock of seven years old, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal which thy father has, and the grove which is by it thou shalt destroy. |

| і постав жертовник Господу Богу твоєму, [який явився тобі] на вершині скелі цієї, у порядку, і візьми другого тельця і принеси у всепалення на дровах дерева, яке зрубаєш. | And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God on the top of this Maozi in the ordering it, and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer up whole-burnt-offerings with the wood of the grove, which thou shalt destroy. |

| Гедеон взяв десять чоловік з рабів своїх і зробив, як говорив йому Господь; але оскільки зробити це вдень він боявся через домашніх батька свого і жителів міста, то зробив уночі. | And Gedeon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord spoke to him: and it came to pass, as he feared the house of his father and the men of the city if he should do it by day, that he did it by night. |

| Зранку встали жителі міста, і ось, жертовник Ваала зруйнований, і дерево при ньому зрубано, і другий телець принесений у всепалення на новоспорудженому жертовнику. | And the men of the city rose up early in the morning; and behold, the altar of Baal had been demolished, and the grove by it had been destroyed; and they saw the second bullock, which Gedeon offered on the altar that had been built. |

| І говорили одне одному: хто це зробив? Шукали, розпитували і сказали: Гедеон, син Іоасів, зробив це. | And a man said to his neighbour, Who has done this thing? and they enquired and searched, and learnt that Gedeon the son of Joas had done this thing. |

| І сказали жителі міста Іоасу: виведи сина твого; він повинен померти за те, що зруйнував жертовник Ваала і зрубав дерево, яке було при ньому. | And the men of the city said to Joas, Bring out thy son, and let him die, because he has destroyed the altar of Baal, and because he has destroyed the grove that is by it. |

| Іоас сказав усім, хто приступив до нього: чи вам заступатися за Ваала, чи вам захищати його? хто заступиться за нього, той буде відданий на смерть в цей самий ранок; якщо він бог, то нехай сам заступиться за себе, проти того, хто зруйнував його жертовник. | And Gedeon the son of Joas said to all the men who rose up against him, Do ye now plead for Baal, or will ye save him? whoever will plead for him, let him be slain this morning: if he be a god let him plead for himself, because one has thrown down his altar. |

| І став називати його з того дня Ієроваалом, тому що сказав: нехай Ваал сам судиться з ним за те, що він зруйнував жертовник його. | And he called it in that day Jerobaal, saying, Let Baal plead thereby, because his altar has been thrown down. |

| Тим часом усі мадіанитяни й амаликитяни і жителі сходу зібралися разом, перейшли [ріку] і стали станом у долині Ізреельській. | And all Madiam, and Amalek, and the sons of the east gathered themselves together, and encamped in the valley of Jezrael. |

| І Дух Господній надихнув Гедеона; він засурмив трубою, і скликане було плем’я Авиєзерове, щоб іти за ним. | And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and he blew with the horn, and Abiezer came to help after him. |

| то ось, я розстелю тут на току стрижену вовну: якщо роса буде тільки на вовні, а на усій землі сухо, то буду знати, що спасеш рукою моєю Ізраїля, як говорив Ти. | behold, I put the fleece of wool in the threshing-floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and drought on all the ground, I shall know that thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said. |

| Так і сталося: на другий день, вставши рано, він став віджимати вовну і віджав з вовни роси цілу чашу води. | And it was so: and he rose up early in the morning, and wrung the fleece, and dew dropped from the fleece, a bowl full of water. |

| Ієроваал, він же і Гедеон, встав зранку і весь народ, який був з ним, і розташувалися станом біля джерела Харода; мадіамський же стан був від нього на північ біля пагорба Море? на долині. | And Jerobaal rose early, the same is Gedeon, and all the people with him, and encamped at the fountain of Arad; and the camp of Madiam was to the north of him, reaching from Gabaathamorai, in the valley. |

| І сказав Господь Гедеону: народу з тобою занадто багато, не можу Я віддати мадіанитян у руки їх, щоб не загордився Ізраїль переді Мною і не сказав: «моя рука спасла мене»; | And the Lord said to Gedeon, The people with thee are many, so that I may not deliver Madiam into their hand, lest at any time Israel boast against me, saying, My hand has saved me. |

| отже, виголоси голосно до народу і скажи: «хто боязкий і несміливий, той нехай повернеться і йде назад з гори Галаада». І повернулося народу двадцять дві тисячі, а десять тисяч залишилося. | And now speak in the ears of the people, saying, Who is afraid and fearful? let him turn and depart from mount Galaad: and there returned of the people twenty-two thousand, and ten thousand were left. |

| І сказав Господь Гедеону: все ще багато народу; веди їх до води, там Я виберу з них тобі; про кого Я скажу: «нехай іде з тобою», той і нехай іде з тобою; а про кого скажу тобі: «не повинен іти з тобою», той нехай і не йде. | And the Lord said to Gedeon, The people is yet numerous; bring them down to the water, and I will purge them there for thee: and it shall come to pass that of whomsoever I shall say to thee, This one shall go with thee, even he shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I shall say to thee, This one shall not go with thee, even he shall not go with thee. |

| Він привів народ до води. І сказав Господь Гедеону: хто буде хлебтати воду язиком своїм, як хлебче пес, того постав окремо, також і тих усіх, які будуть схилятися на коліна свої і пити. | And he brought the people down to the water; and the Lord said to Gedeon, Whosoever shall lap of the water with his tongue as if a dog should lap, thou shalt set him apart, and also whosoever shall bow down upon his knees to drink. |

| І було число тих, хто хлебтали ротом своїм з руки, триста чоловік; весь же інший народ схилявся на коліна свої пити воду. | And the number of those that lapped with their hand to their mouth was three hundred men; and all the rest of the people bowed upon their knees to drink water. |

| І сказав Господь Гедеону: трьомастами тими, що хлебтали, Я спасу вас і віддам мадіанитян у руки ваші, а весь народ нехай іде, кожен у своє місце. | And the Lord said to Gedeon, I will save you by the three hundred men that lapped, and I will give Madiam into thy hand; and all the rest of the people shall go every one to his place. |

| І взяли вони у народу запас їжі собі і труби їхні, і відпустив Гедеон усіх ізраїльтян по наметах і затримав у себе триста чоловік; стан же мадіамський був у нього внизу в долині. | And they took the provision of the people in their hand, and their horns; and he sent away every man of Israel each to his tent, and he strengthened the three hundred; and the army of Madiam were beneath him in the valley. |

| У ту ніч сказав йому Господь: встань, зійди в стан, Я віддаю його в руки твої; | And it came to pass in that night that the Lord said to him, Arise, go down into the camp, for I have delivered it into thy hand. |

| якщо ж ти боїшся йти один, то піди в стан ти і Фура, слуга твій; | And if thou art afraid to go down, go down thou and thy servant Phara into the camp. |
|

11
|
| і почуєш, що говорять, і тоді укріпляться руки твої, і підеш у стан. І зійшов він і Фура, слуга його, до самого полку озброєних, які були в стані. | And thou shalt hear what they shall say, and afterwards thy hands shall be strong, and thou shalt go down into the camp: and he went down and Phara his servant to the extremity of the companies of fifty, which were in the camp. |

| Мадіанитяни ж і амаликитяни і всі жителі сходу розташувалися на долині в такій безлічі, як сарана; верблюдам їх не було числа, багато було їх, як піску на березі моря. | And Madiam and Amalec and all the children of the east were scattered in the valley, as the locust for multitude; and there was no number to their camels, but they were as the sand on the seashore for multitude. |

| Гедеон прийшов. І ось, один розповідає іншому сон і говорить: снилося мені, начебто круглий ячмінний хліб котився по стану мадіамському і, прикотившись до намету, вдарив у нього так, що він упав, перекинув його, і намет розпався. | And Gedeon came, and behold a man was relating to his neighbour a dream, and he said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread rolling into the camp of Madiam, and it came as far as a tent, and smote it, and it fell, and it turned it up, and the tent fell. |

| Інший сказав у відповідь йому: це не що інше, як меч Гедеона, сина Іоасового, ізраїльтянина; віддав Бог у руки його мадіанитян і весь стан. | And his neighbour answered and said, This is none other than the sword of Gedeon, son of Joas, a man of Israel: God has delivered Madiam and all the host into his hand. |

| Гедеон, почувши розповідь про сон і тлумачення його, вклонився [Господу] і повернувся в стан ізраїльський і сказав: вставайте! віддав Господь у руки ваші стан мадіамський. | And it came to pass when Gedeon heard the account of the dream and the interpretation of it, that he worshipped the Lord, and returned to the camp of Israel, and said, Rise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Madiam into our hand. |

| І розділив триста чоловік на три загони і дав у руки всім їм труби і порожні глечики і в глечики світильники. | And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and put horns in the hands of all, and empty pitchers, and torches in the pitchers: |

| І підійшов Гедеон і сто чоловік з ним до стану, на початку середньої сторожі, і розбудили вартових, і засурмили трубами і розбили глечики, що були в руках їхніх. | And Gedeon and the hundred men that were with him came to the extremity of the army in the beginning of the middle watch; and they completely roused the guards, and sounded with the horns, and they broke the pitchers that were in their hands, |

| І засурмили всі три загони трубами, і розбили глечики, і тримали в лівій руці своїй світильники, а в правій руці труби, і сурмили, і кричали: меч Господа і Гедеона! | and the three companies sounded with the horns, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and in their right hands their horns to sound with; and they cried out, A sword for the Lord and for Gedeon. |

| І стояв кожен на своєму місці навколо стану; і стали бігати в усьому стані, і кричали, і кинулися втікати. | And every man stood in his place round about the host; and all the host ran, and sounded an alarm, and fled. |

| У той час як триста чоловік сурмили трубами, повернув Господь меч один на одного в усьому стані, і побігло ополчення до Бефшитти, до Царери, до межі Авелмехоли, поблизу Табафи. | And they sounded with the three hundred horns; and the Lord set every man's sword in all the host against his neighbour. |

| І скликали ізраїльтян з коліна Неффалимового, Асирового і всього коліна Манассіїного, і погналися за мадіанитянами. | And the host fled as far as Bethseed Tagaragatha Abel-meula to Tabath; and the men of Israel from Nephthali, and from Aser, and from all Manasse, came to help, and followed after Madiam. |

| Гедеон же послав послів на всю гору Єфремову сказати: вийдіть назустріч мадіанитянам і перехопіть у них переправу через воду до Бефвари і Йордан. І скликали всіх єфремлян, і перехопили вони переправи через воду до Бефвари і Йордан; | And Gedeon sent messengers into all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down to meet Madiam, and take to yourselves the water as far as Bæthera and Jordan: and every man of Ephraim cried out, and they took the water before hand unto Bæthera and Jordan. |

| і впіймали двох князів мадіамських: Орива і Зива, і вбили Орива в Цур-Ориві, а Зива в Ієкев-Зиві і переслідували мадіанитян; голови ж Орива і Зива принесли до Гедеона за Йордан. | And they took the princes of Madiam, even Oreb and Zeb; and they slew Oreb in Sur Oreb, and they slew Zeb in Jakephzeph; and they pursued Madiam, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeb to Gedeon from beyond Jordan. |

| І сказали йому єфремляни: навіщо ти це зробив, чому не покликав нас, коли йшов воювати з мадіанитянами? І сильно сварилися з ним. | And the men of Ephraim said to Gedeon, What is this that thou hast done to us, in that thou didst not call us when thou wentest to fight with Madiam? and they chode with him sharply. |

| [Гедеон] відповів їм: чи зробив я щось таке, як ви нині? Чи не краще Єфрем добирав виноград, ніж Авиєзер збирав? | And he said to them, What have I now done in comparison of you? is not the gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? |

| У ваші руки віддав Бог князів мадіамських Орива і Зива, і що міг зробити я такого, як ви? Тоді заспокоївся дух їх проти нього, коли сказав він їм такі слова. | The Lord has delivered into your hand the princes of Madiam, Oreb and Zeb; and what could I do in comparison of you? Then was their spirit calmed toward him, when he spoke this word. |

| І прийшов Гедеон до Йордану, і перейшов сам і триста чоловік, які були з ним. Вони були стомлені [і голодні], переслідуючи ворогів. | And Gedeon came to Jordan, and went over, himself and the three hundred with him, hungry, yet pursuing. |

|
| І сказав він жителям Сокхофа: дайте хліба народу, який іде за мною; вони стомилися, а я переслідую Зевея і Салмана, царів мадіамських. | And he said to the men of Socchoth, Give, I pray you, bread to feed this people that follow me; because they are faint, and behold, I am following after Zebee and Salmana, kings of Madiam. |

| Князі Сокхофа сказали: хіба рука Зевея і Салмана вже у твоїй руці, щоб нам війську твоєму давати хліб? | And the princes of Socchoth said, Are the hands of Zebee and Salmana now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy host? |

| І сказав Гедеон: за це, коли віддасть Господь Зевея і Салмана в руки мої, я роздеру тіло ваше терням пустельним і молотильними зубчастими дошками. | And Gedeon said, Therefore when the Lord gives Zebee and Salmana into my hand, then will I tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and the Barkenim. |

| Звідти пішов він у Пенуел і те саме сказав жителям його, і жителі Пенуела відповіли йому те саме, що відповідали жителі Сокхофа. | And he went up thence to Phanuel, and spoke to them likewise: and the men of Phanuel answered him as the men of Socchoth had answered him. |

| Зевей же і Салман були в Каркорі і з ними їхнє ополчення до п’ятнадцяти тисяч, усе, що залишилося з усього ополчення жителів сходу; загинуло ж сто двадцять тисяч чоловік, які оголюють меч. | And Zebee and Salmana were in Carcar, and their host was with them, about fifteen thousand, all that were left of all the host of the aliens; and they that fell were a hundred and twenty thousand men that drew the sword. |

| Гедеон пішов до тих, що живуть у наметах на схід від Нови й Іогбеги й уразив стан, коли стан спочивав безтурботно. | And Gedeon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents, eastward of Nabai and Jegebal; and he smote the host, and the host was secure. |

| Зевей і Салман побігли; він погнався за ними і схопив обох царів мадіамських, Зевея і Салмана, і весь стан привів у замішання. | And Zebee and Salmana fled; and he pursued after them, and took the two kings of Madiam, Zebee and Salmana, and discomfited all the army. |

| І повернувся Гедеон, син Іоаса, з війни з узвишшя Хереса. | And Gedeon the son of Joas returned from the battle, down from the battle of Ares. |
|

| І захопив юнака з жителів Сокхофа і випитав у нього; і він написав йому князів і старійшин сокхофських сімдесят сім чоловік. | And he took prisoner a young lad of the men of Socchoth, and questioned him; and he wrote to him the names of the princes of Socchoth and of their elders, seventy-seven men. |

| І прийшов він до жителів сокхофських, і сказав: ось Зевей і Салман, за яких ви насміялися з мене, говорячи: хіба рука Зевея і Салмана вже у твоїй руці, щоб нам давати хліб людям твоїм, які стомилися? | And Gedeon came to the princes of Socchoth, and said, Behold Zebee and Salmana, about whom ye reproached me, saying, Are the hands of Zebee and Salmana now in thy hand, that we should give bread to thy men that are faint? |

| І взяв старійшин міста і терен пустельний і зубчасті молотильні дошки і покарав ними жителів Сокхофа; | And he took the elders of the city with the thorns of the wilderness and the Barkenim, and with them he tore the men of the city. |

| і вежу Пенуельську зруйнував, і перебив жителів міста. | And he overthrew the tower of Phanuel, and slew the men of the city. |
|

|

|
| І сказав Зевею і Салману: якими були ті, яких ви вбили на Фаворі? Вони сказали: вони були такі, як ти, кожен мав вигляд синів царських. | And he said to Zebee and Salmana, Where are the men whom ye slew in Thabor? and they said, As thou, so were they, according to the likeness of the son of a king. |

| [Гедеон] сказав: це були брати мої, сини матері моєї. Живий Господь! якби ви залишили їх живими, я не убив би вас. | And Gedeon said, They were my brethren and the sons of my mother: as the Lord lives, if ye had preserved them alive, I would not have slain you. |

| І сказав Ієферу, первісткові своєму: встань, убий їх. Але юнак не витяг меча свого, тому що боявся, оскільки був ще молодим. | And he said to Jether his first-born, Rise and slay them; but the lad drew not his sword, for he was afraid, for he was yet very young. |

| І сказали Зевей і Салман: встань сам і убий нас, тому що за людиною і сила її. І встав Гедеон, і убив Зевея і Салмана, і взяв пряжки, що були на шиях верблюдів їхніх. | And Zebee and Salmana said, Rise thou and fall upon us, for thy power is as that of a man; and Gedeon arose, and slew Zebee and Salmana; and he took the round ornaments that were on the necks of their camels. |

| І сказали ізраїльтяни Гедеону: володій нами ти і син твій і син сина твого, тому що ти спас нас від руки мадіанитян. | And the men of Israel said to Gedeon, Rule, my lord, over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son; for thou hast saved us out of the hand of Madiam. |

| Гедеон сказав їм: ні я не буду володіти вами, ні мій син не буде володіти вами; Господь нехай володіє вами. | And Gedeon said to them, I will not rule, and my son shall not rule among you; the Lord shall rule over you. |

[Бо у ворогів багато було золотих серг, тому що вони були ізмаїльтяни.] | And Gedeon said to them, I will make a request of you, and do ye give me every man an earring out of his spoils: for they had golden earrings, for they were Ismaelites. |

| Вони сказали: дамо. І розстелили одяг і кидали туди кожен по серзі зі здобичі своєї. | And they said, We will certainly give them: and he opened his garment, and each man cast therein an earring of his spoils. |

| Ваги у золотих сергах, які він випросив, було тисяча сімсот золотих [сиклів], крім пряжок, ґудзиків і пурпурового одягу, що були на царях мадіамських, і крім [золотих] ланцюжків, що були на шиї у верблюдів їхніх. | And the weight of the golden earrings which he asked, was a thousand and seven hundred pieces of gold, besides the crescents, and the chains, and the garments, and the purple cloths that were on the kings of Madiam, and besides the chains that were on the necks of their camels. |

| З цього зробив Гедеон ефод і поклав його у своєму місті, в Офрі, і стали всі ізраїльтяни блудно ходити туди за ним, і був він сіттю Гедеону і всьому дому його. | And Gedeon made an ephod of it, and set it in his city in Ephratha; and all Israel went thither a whoring after it, and it became a stumbling-block to Gedeon and his house. |

| Так підкорилися мадіанитяни синам Ізраїля і не стали вже піднімати голови своєї, і спочивала земля сорок років у дні Гедеона. | And Madiam was straitened before the children of Israel, and they did not lift up their head any more; and the land had rest forty years in the days of Gedeon. |

| І пішов Ієроваал, син Іоасів, і жив у домі своєму. | And Jerobaal the son of Joas went and sat in his house. |
|

|
| У Гедеона було сімдесят синів, які народилися від стегон його, тому що в нього багато було дружин. | And Gedeon had seventy sons begotten of his body, for he had many wives. |
|

|
| Також і наложниця, яка жила в Сихемі, народила йому сина, і він дав йому ім’я Авимелех. | And his concubine was in Sychem, and she also bore him a son, and gave him the name Abimelech. |
|

| І помер Гедеон, син Іоаса, у глибокій старості, і похований був у гробі батька свого Іоаса, в Офрі Авиєзеровій. | And Gedeon son of Joas died in his city, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joas his father in Ephratha of Abi-Esdri. |

| Коли помер Гедеон, сини Ізраїлеві знову стали блудно ходити вслід Ваалу і поставили собі богом Ваалверифа; | And it came to pass when Gedeon was dead, that the children of Israel turned, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made for themselves a covenant with Baal that he should be their god. |

| і не згадували сини Ізраїлеві Господа Бога свого, Який спас їх від руки всіх ворогів, які оточували їх; | And the children of Israel remembered not the Lord their God who had delivered them out of the hand of all that afflicted them round about. |

| і дому Ієровааловому, або Гедеоновому, не зробили милости за всі благодіяння, які він зробив Ізраїлю. | And they did not deal mercifully with the house of Jerobaal, (the same is Gedeon) according to all the good which he did to Israel. |

| Авимелех, син Ієроваалів, пішов у Сихем до братів матері своєї і говорив їм і всьому племені батька матері своєї, і сказав: | And Abimelech son of Jerobaal went to Sychem to his mother's brethren; and he spoke to them and to all the kindred of the house of his mother's father, saying, |

| скажіть усім жителям сихемським: що краще для вас, щоб володіли вами всі сімдесят синів Ієроваалових, чи щоб володів один? і згадайте, що я кість ваша і плоть ваша. | Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Sychem, saying, Which is better for you, that seventy men, even all the sons of Jerobaal, should reign over you, or that one man should reign over you? and remember that I am your bone and your flesh. |

| Брати матері його сказали всі ці слова його жителям сихемським; і прихилилося серце їхнє до Авимелеха, бо говорили вони: він брат наш. | And his mother's brethren spoke concerning him in the ears of all the men of Sychem all these words; and their heart turned after Abimelech, for they said, He is our brother. |

| І дали йому сімдесят сиклів срібла з дому Ваалверифа; Авимелех найняв за них бездільних і свавільних людей, які й пішли за ним. | And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baalberith; and Abimelech hired for himself vain and cowardly men, and they went after him. |

| І прийшов він у дім батька свого в Офру й убив братів своїх, сімдесят синів Ієроваалових, на одному камені. Залишився тільки Іофам, молодший син Ієроваалів, тому що сховався. | And he went to the house of his father to Ephratha, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerobaal, seventy men upon one stone; but Joatham the youngest son of Jerobaal was left, for he hid himself. |

| І зібралися всі жителі сихемські і весь дім Милло, і пішли і поставили царем Авимелеха біля дуба, що поблизу Сихема. | And all the men of Sicima, and all the house of Bethmaalo, were gathered together, and they went and made Abimelech king by the oak of Sedition, which was at Sicima. |

| Коли розповіли про це Іофаму, він пішов і став на вершині гори Гаризим і, піднесши голос свій, кричав і говорив їм: послухайте мене, жителі Сихема, і послухає вас Бог! | And it was reported to Joatham, and he went and stood on the top of mount Garizin, and lifted up his voice, and wept, and said to them, Hear me, ye men of Sicima, and God shall hear you. |

| Пішли колись дерева помазати над собою царя і сказали маслиновому дереву: царюй над нами. | The trees went forth on a time to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive, Reign over us. |

| Маслина сказала їм: чи залишу я жир мій, яким ушановують богів і людей і чи піду блукати по деревах? | But the olive said to them, Shall I leave my fatness, with which men shall glorify God, and go to be promoted over the trees? |

| І сказали дерева смоковниці: йди ти, царюй над нами. | And the trees said to the fig-tree, Come, reign over us. |
|

|

|
| Смоковниця сказала їм: чи залишу я солодкість мою і гарний плід мій і чи піду блукати по деревах? | But the fig-tree said to them, Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruits, and go to be promoted over the trees? |
|

|
| І сказали дерева виноградній лозі: йди ти, царюй над нами. | And the trees said to the vine, Come, reign over us. |
|

|

|
| Виноградна лоза сказала їм: чи залишу я сік мій, який веселить богів і людей, і чи піду блукати по деревах? | And the vine said to them, Shall I leave my wine that cheers God and men, and go to be promoted over the trees? |
|

|
| Нарешті сказали всі дерева терну: йди ти, царюй над нами. | Then all the trees said to the bramble, Come thou and reign over us. |
|

|
15
|
| Терен сказав деревам: якщо ви дійсно поставляєте мене царем над собою, то йдіть, спочивайте під тінню моєю; якщо ж ні, то вийде вогонь з терну і спалить кедри ливанські. | And the bramble said to the trees, If ye in truth anoint me to reign over you, come, stand under my shadow; and if not, let fire come out from me and devour the cedars of Libanus. |

| Отже, дивіться, чи істино і чи справедливо ви зробили, поставивши Авимелеха царем? І чи добре ви зробили з Ієроваалом і домом його, і чи відповідно до його благодіянь вчинили ви? | And now, if ye have done it in truth and integrity, and have made Abimelech king, and if ye have wrought well with Jerobaal, and with his house, and if ye have done to him according to the reward of his hand, |

| За вас батько мій воював, не щадив життя свого і визволив вас від руки мадіанитян; | as my father fought for you, and put his life in jeopardy, and delivered you out of the hand of Madiam; |

| а ви тепер повстали проти дому батька мого, й убили сімдесят синів батька мого на одному камені, і поставили царем над жителями сихемськими Авимелеха, сина рабині його, тому що він брат ваш. | and ye are risen up this day against the house of my father, and have slain his sons, being seventy men, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech the son of his bondwoman king over the men of Sicima, because he is your brother: |

| Якщо ви нині за істиною і за правдою вчинили з Ієроваалом і домом його, то [нехай буде на вас благословення і] радуйтеся за Авимелеха, і він нехай радується за вас; | if then ye have done truly and faithfully with Jerobaal, and with his house this day, rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice over you: |

| якщо ж ні, то нехай вийде вогонь від Авимелеха і нехай спалить жителів сихемських і весь дім Милло і нехай вийде вогонь від жителів сихемських і від дому Милло, і нехай попалить Авимелеха. | but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Sicima, and the house of Beth-maalo; and let fire come out from the men of Sicima and from the house of Beth-maalo, and devour Abimelech. |

| І побіг Іофам, і втік і пішов у Беер, і жив там, ховаючись від брата свого Авимелеха. | And Joatham fled, and ran away, and went as far as Bæer, and dwelt there out of the way of his brother Abimelech. |

| Авимелех же царював над Ізраїлем три роки. | And Abimelech reigned over Israel three years. |
|

|
| І послав Бог злого духа на Авимелеха і на жителів Сихема, і не стали підкорятися жителі сихемські Авимелеху, | And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Sicima; and the men of Sicima dealt treacherously with the house of Abimelech: |
|

|
| щоб у такий спосіб звершилася помста за сімдесят синів Ієроваалових, і кров їхня повернулася на Авимелеха, брата їхнього, який убив їх, і на жителів сихемських, які укріпили руки його, щоб убити братів своїх. | to bring the injury done to the seventy sons of Jerobaal, and to lay their blood upon their brother Abimelech, who slew them, and upon the men of Sicima, because they strengthened his hands to slay his brethren. |

| Жителі сихемські посадили проти нього в засідку людей на вершинах гір, які грабували кожного, хто проходив мимо них по дорозі. Про це донесено було Авимелеху. | And the men of Sicima set liers in wait against him on the top of the mountains, and robbed every one who passed by them on the way; and it was reported to the king Abimelech. |

| Прийшов же і Гаал, син Еведів, з братами своїми в Сихем, і ходили вони по Сихему, і жителі сихемські поклалися на нього. | And Gaal son of Jobel came, and his brethren, and passed by Sicima, and the men of Sicima trusted in him. |

| І вийшли в поле, і збирали виноград свій, і давили в точилах, і справляли свята, ходили в дім бога свого, і їли і пили, і проклинали Авимелеха. | And they went out into the field, and gathered their grapes, and trod them, and made merry; and they brought the grapes into the house of their god, and ate and drank, and cursed Abimelech. |

| Гаал, син Еведів, говорив: хто Авимелех і що Сихем, щоб ми служили йому? Чи не син він Ієроваалів, і чи не Зевул головначальник його? Служіть краще нащадкам Еммора, батька Сихемового, а йому чому ми повинні служити? | And Gaal the son of Jobel said, Who is Abimelech, and who is the son of Sychem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerobaal, and is not Zebul his steward, his servant with the son of Emmor the father of Sychem? and why should we serve him? |

| Якби хто дав народ цей у руки мої, я прогнав би Авимелеха. І сказано було Авимелеху: примнож військо твоє і виходь. | And would that this people were under my hand! then would I remove Abimelech, and I would say to him, Multiply thy host, and come out. |

| Зевул, начальник міста, почув слова Гаала, сина Еведового, і запалав гнів його. | And Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Jobel, and he was very angry. |
|

|

|
| Він хитрим способом відправляє послів до Авимелеха, щоб сказати: ось, Гаал, син Еведів, і брати його прийшли в Сихем, і ось, вони підбурюють проти тебе місто; | And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, Behold, Gaal the son of Jobel and his brethren are come to Sychem; and behold, they have besieged the city against thee. |

| отже, встань уночі, ти і народ, який знаходиться з тобою, і постав засідку в полі; | And now rise up by night, thou and the people with thee, and lay wait in the field. |
|

|
| вранці ж, при сходженні сонця, встань рано і підійди до міста; і коли він і народ, який з ним, вийдуть до тебе, тоді роби з ними, що може рука твоя. | And it shall come to pass in the morning at sunrising, thou shalt rise up early and draw toward the city; and behold, he and the people with him will come forth against thee, and thou shalt do to him according to thy power. |

| І встав уночі Авимелех і весь народ, який знаходився з ним, і поставили в засідку біля Сихема чотири загони. | And Abimelech and all the people with him rose up by night, and formed an ambuscade against Sychem in four companies. |
|

|
| [Вранці] Гаал, син Еведів, вийшов і став біля воріт міських; і встав Авимелех і народ, який був з ним, із засідки. | And Gaal the son of Jobel went forth, and stood by the door of the gate of the city: and Abimelech and the people with him rose up from the ambuscade. |

| Гаал, побачивши народ, говорить Зевулу: ось, народ спускається з вершини гір. А Зевул сказав йому: тінь гір тобі здається людьми. | And Gaal the son of Jobel saw the people, and said to Zebul, Behold, a people comes down from the top of the mountains: and Zebul said to him, Thou seest the shadow of the mountains as men. |

| Гаал знову говорив і сказав: ось, народ спускається з узвишшя, і один загін іде від дуба Меонним. | And Gaal continued to speak and said, Behold, a people comes down westward from the part bordering on the middle of the land, and another company comes by the way of Helon Maonenim. |

|
| І сказав йому Зевул: де вуста твої, які говорили: «хто Авимелех, щоб ми служили йому?» Це той народ, який ти зневажав; виходь тепер і воюй з ним. | And Zebul said to him, And where is thy mouth as thou spokest, Who is Abimelech that we should serve him? Is not this the people whom thou despisedst? go forth now, and set the battle in array against him. |

| І пішов Гаал попереду жителів сихемських і воював з Авимелехом. | And Gaal went forth before the men of Sychem, and set the battle in array against Abimelech. |
|

|
| І погнався за ним Авимелех, і побіг він від нього, і багато впало убитих до самих воріт міста. | And Abimelech pursued him, and he fled from before him; and many fell down slain as far as the door of the gate. |
|

|
| І залишився Авимелех в Арумі, а Гаала і братів його Зевул вигнав, щоб вони не жили в Сихемі. | And Abimelech entered into Arema, and Zebul cast out Gaal and his brethren, so that they should not dwell in Sychem. |
|

| На другий день вийшов народ у поле, і донесли про це Авимелеху. | And it came to pass on the second day that the people went out into the field, and one brought word to Abimelech. |
|

|
| Він узяв свій народ і розділив його на три загони і поставив у засідку в полі. І, побачивши, що народ вийшов з міста, повстав на них і побив їх. | And he took the people, and divided them into three companies, and formed an ambush in the field; and he looked, and, behold, the people went forth out of the city, and he rose up against them, and smote them. |

| Тим часом як Авимелех і загони, які були з ним, підійшли і стали біля воріт міських, інші два загони напали на всіх, хто був у полі, й убивали їх. | And Abimelech and the chiefs of companies that were with him rushed forward, and stood by the door of the gate of the city; and the two other companies rushed forward upon all that were in the field, and smote them. |

| І бився Авимелех з містом увесь той день, і взяв місто, і перебив людей, які були в ньому, і зруйнував місто і засіяв його сіллю. | And Abimelech fought against the city all that day, and took the city, and slew the people that were in it, and destroyed the city, and sowed it with salt. |

|
| Почувши про це, всі, хто був у вежі сихемській, пішли у вежу капища Ваал-Верифа. | And all the men of the tower of Sychem heard, and came to the gathering of Bæthel-berith. |
|

| Авимелеху донесли, що зібралися там усі, хто був раніше у вежі сихемській. | And it was reported to Abimelech, that all the men of the tower of Sychem were gathered together. |
|

| І пішов Авимелех на гору Селмон, сам і весь народ, який був з ним, і взяв Авимелех сокири із собою і нарубав сучків з дерев, і поклав на плечі свої, і сказав людям, які були з ним: ви бачили, що я робив; скоріше робіть і ви те саме, що я. | And Abimelech went up to the mount of Selmon, and all the people that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a branch of a tree, and took it, and laid it on his shoulders; and said to the people that were with him, What ye see me doing, do quickly as I. |

| І нарубав кожен з усього народу сучків, і пішли за Авимелехом, і поклали до вежі, і спалили за допомогою їх вежу вогнем, і померли всі, хто був у вежі сихемській, близько тисячі чоловіків і жінок. | And they cut down likewise even every man a branch, and went after Abimelech, and laid them against the place of gathering, and burnt the place of gathering over them with fire; and they died, even all the men of the tower of Sicima, about a thousand men and women. |

| Потім пішов Авимелех у Тевец і обложив Тевец і взяв його. | And Abimelech went out of Bæthel-berith, and encamped against Thebes, and took it. |

| Посеред міста була міцна вежа, і втекли туди всі чоловіки і жінки і всі жителі міста, і замкнулися і зійшли на покрівлю вежі. | And there was a strong tower in the midst of the city; and thither all the men and the women of the city fled, and shut the door without them, and went up on the roof of the tower. |

| Авимелех прийшов до вежі й оточив її і підійшов до дверей вежі, щоб спалити її вогнем. | And Abimelech drew near to the tower, and they besieged it; and Abimelech drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. |
|

| Тоді одна жінка кинула уламок жорна на голову Авимелеху і проломила йому череп. | And a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon the head of Abimelech, and broke his skull. |
|

| [Авимелех] негайно покликав отрока, зброєносця свого, і сказав йому: оголи меч твій і умертви мене, щоб не сказали про мене: жінка убила його. І проколов його отрок його, і він помер. | And he cried out quickly to the young man his armour-bearer, and said to him, Draw thy sword, and slay me, lest at any time they should say, A woman slew him: and his young man thrust him through and he died. |

| Ізраїльтяни, бачачи, що помер Авимелех, пішли кожен у своє місце. | And the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead; and they went each to his place. |
|

| Так воздав Бог Авимелеху за злодіяння, які він зробив батькові своєму, убивши сімдесят братів своїх. | So God requited the wickedness of Abimelech, which he wrought against his father, in slaying his seventy brethren. |
|

| І всі злодіяння жителів сихемських повернув Бог на голову їх; і спостигло їх прокляття Іофама, сина Ієроваалового. | And all the wickedness of the men of Sychem God requited upon their head; and the curse of Joatham the son of Jerobaal came upon them. |

| Після Авимелеха постав для спасіння Ізраїля Фола, син Фуї, сина Додового, з коліна Іссахарового. Він жив у Шамирі на горі Єфремовій. | And after Abimelech Thola the son of Phua rose up to save Israel, being the son of his father's brother, a man of Issachar; and he dwelt in Samir in mount Ephraim. |

| Він був суддею Ізраїля двадцять три роки, і помер, і похований у Шамирі. | And he judged Israel twenty-three years, and died, and was buried in Samir. |
|

|
| Після нього постав Іаїр з Галаада і був суддею Ізраїля двадцять два роки. | And after him arose Jair of Galaad, and he judged Israel twenty-two years. |
|
4
|

|
| У нього було тридцять [два] сини, які їздили на тридцятьох [двох] молодих ослах, і тридцять [два] міста було в них; до цього дня їх називають селищами Іаїра, що в землі Галаадській. | And he had thirty-two sons riding on thirty-two colts, and they had thirty-two cities; and they called them Jair's towns until this day in the land of Galaad. |

| І помер Іаїр і був похований у Камоні. | And Jair died, and was buried in Rhamnon. |
|

|
| Сини Ізраїлеві продовжували чинити зле перед очима Господа і служили Ваалу й Астарті, і богам арамейським, і богам сидонським, і богам моавитським, і богам аммонитським, і богам филистимським; а Господа залишили і не служили Йому. | And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim, and Astaroth, and the gods of Aram, and the gods of Sidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Phylistines; and they forsook the Lord, and did not serve him. |

|
| І запалав гнів Господа на Ізраїля, і Він віддав їх у руки филистимлян і в руки аммонитян; | And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and sold them into the hand of the Phylistines, and into the hand of the children of Ammon. |
|

|
| вони утискували і мучили синів Ізраїлевих з того року вісімнадцять років, усіх синів Ізраїлевих по той бік Йордану в землі Аморрейській, що у Галааді. | And they afflicted and bruised the children of Israel at that time eighteen years, all the children of Israel beyond Jordan in the land of the Amorite in Galaad. |

| Нарешті аммонитяни перейшли Йордан, щоб вести війну з Іудою і Веніаміном і з домом Єфремовим. І дуже тісно було синам Ізраїля. | And the children of Ammon went over Jordan to fight with Juda, and Benjamin, and with Ephraim; and the children of Israel were greatly afflicted. |

| І воззвали сини Ізраїлеві до Господа, і говорили: згрішили ми перед Тобою, тому що залишили Бога нашого і служили Ваалу. | And the children of Israel cried to the Lord, saying, We have sinned against thee, because we have forsaken God, and served Baalim. |

|
| І сказав Господь синам Ізраїлевим: чи не пригнічували вас єгиптяни, й аморреяни, й аммонитяни, і филистимляни, | And the Lord said to the children of Israel, Did I not save you from Egypt and from the Amorite, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Phylistines, |

|
| і сидоняни, й амаликитяни, і моавитяни, і коли ви взивали до Мене, чи не спасав Я вас від рук їх? | and from the Sidonians, and Amalec, and Madiam, who afflicted you? and ye cried to me, and I saved you out of their hand? |
|

|
| А ви залишили Мене і стали служити іншим богам; за те Я вже не буду спасати вас: | Yet ye forsook me and served other gods; therefore I will not save you any more. |
|

|
| підіть, взивайте до богів, яких ви обрали, нехай вони спасають вас у скрутний для вас час. | Go, and cry to the gods whom ye have chosen to yourselves, and let them save you in the time of your affliction. |
|

|
| І сказали сини Ізраїлеві Господу: згрішили ми; роби з нами все, що Тобі завгодно, тільки визволи нас нині. | And the children of Israel said to the Lord, We have sinned: do thou to us according to all that is good in thine eyes; only deliver us this day. |
|

|
| І відкинули від себе чужих богів і стали служити [тільки] Господу. І не потерпіла душа Його страждання Ізраїлевого. | And they put away the strange gods from the midst of them, and served the Lord only, and his soul was pained for the trouble of Israel. |
|

|
| Аммонитяни зібралися і розташувалися станом біля Галаада; зібралися також сини Ізраїлеві і стали станом у Массифі. | And the children of Ammon went up, and encamped in Galaad; and the children of Israel were gathered together and encamped on the hill. |
|

|
| Народ і князі галаадські сказали одне одному: хто почне війну проти аммонитян, той буде начальником над усіма жителями галаадськими. | And the people the princes of Galaad said every man to his neighbour, Who is he that shall begin to fight against the children of Ammon? he shall even be head over all that dwell in Galaad. |

| Ієффай галаадитянин був людиною хороброю. Він був сином блудниці; від Галаада народився Ієффай. | And Jephthae the Galaadite was a mighty man; and he was the son of a harlot, who bore Jephthae to Galaad. |

| І дружина Галаадова народила йому синів. Коли змужніли сини дружини, прогнали вони Ієффая, сказавши йому: ти не спадкоємець у домі батька нашого, тому що ти син іншої жінки. | And the wife of Galaad bore him sons; and the sons of his wife grew up, and they cast out Jephthae, and said to him, Thou shalt not inherit in the house of our father, for thou art the son of a concubine. |

| І втік Ієффай від братів своїх і жив у землі Тов; і зібралися до Ієффая бездільні люди і виходили з ним. | And Jephthae fled from the face of his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob; and vain men gathered to Jephthae, and went out with him. |

| Через деякий час аммонитяни пішли війною на Ізраїля. | And it came to pass when the children of Ammon prepared to fight with Israel, |

| Під час війни аммонитян з ізраїльтянами прийшли старійшини галаадські взяти Ієффая із землі Тов | that the elders of Galaad went to fetch Jephthae from the land of Tob. |
|

|
| і сказали Ієффаю: прийди, будь у нас вождем, і ми будемо воювати з аммонитянами. | And they said to Jephthae, Come, and be our head, and we will fight with the sons of Ammon. |
|

|
7
|
| Ієффай сказав старійшинам галаадським: чи не ви зненавиділи мене і вигнали з дому батька мого? навіщо ж прийшли до мене нині, коли ви в біді? | And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, Did ye not hate me, and cast me out of my father's house, and banish me from you? and wherefore are ye come to me now when ye want me? |

| Старійшини галаадські сказали Ієффаю: для того ми тепер прийшли до тебе, щоб ти пішов з нами й воював з аммонитянами і був у нас начальником усіх жителів галаадських. | And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, Therefore have we now turned to thee, that thou shouldest go with us, and fight against the sons of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Galaad. |

| І сказав Ієффай старійшинам галаадським: якщо ви повернете мене, щоб воювати з аммонитянами, і Господь віддасть їх мені, то чи залишуся я у вас начальником? | And Jephthae said to the elders of Galaad, If ye turn me back to fight with the children of Ammon, and the Lord should deliver them before me, then will I be your head. |

| Старійшини галаадські сказали Ієффаю: Господь нехай буде свідком між нами, що ми зробимо за словом твоїм! | And the elders of Galaad said to Jephthae, The Lord be witness between us, if we shall not do according to thy word. |

| І пішов Ієффай зі старійшинами галаадськими, і народ поставив його над собою начальником і вождем, і Ієффай виголосив усі слова свої перед лицем Господа в Массифі. | And Jephthae went with the elders of Galaad, and the people made him head and ruler over them: and Jephthae spoke all his words before the Lord in Massepha. |

| І послав Ієффай послів до царя Аммонитського сказати: що тобі до мене, чому ти прийшов до мене воювати на землі моїй? | And Jephthae sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What have I to do with thee, that thou hast come against me to fight in my land? |

|
| Цар Аммонитський сказав послам Ієффая: Ізраїль, коли йшов з Єгипту, взяв землю мою від Арнона до Іавока і Йордану; отже, поверни мені її з миром [і я відступлю]. | And the king of the children of Ammon said to the messengers of Jephthae, Because Israel took my land when he went up out of Egypt, from Arnon to Jaboc, and to Jordan: now then return them peaceably and I will depart. |

| [І повернулися посли до Ієффая.] Ієффай удруге послав послів до царя Аммонитського, | And Jephthae again sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, |

| сказати йому: так говорить Ієффай: Ізраїль не забирав землі Моавитської і землі Аммонитської; | and said to him, Thus says Jephthae, Israel took not the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon; |
|

|
| бо коли йшли з Єгипту, Ізраїль пішов у пустелю до Червоного моря і прийшов у Кадес; | for in their going up out of Egypt Israel went in the wilderness as far as the sea of Siph, and came to Cades. |
|

|
| звідти послав Ізраїль послів до царя Едомського сказати: «дозволь мені пройти землею твоєю»; але цар Едомський не послухав; і до царя Моавитського він посилав, але і той не погодився; тому Ізраїль залишався в Кадесі. | And Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, I will pass, if it please thee, by thy land: and the king of Edom complied not: and Israel also sent to the king of Moab, and he did not consent; and Israel sojourned in Cades. |

| І пішов пустелею, й оминув землю Едомську і землю Моавитську, і, прийшовши до східної межі землі Моавитської, розташувався станом за Арноном; але не входив у межі Моавитські, тому що Арнон є межа Моава. | And they journeyed in the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab: and they came by the east of the land of Moab, and encamped in the country beyond Arnon, and came not within the borders of Moab, for Arnon is the border of Moab. |

| І послав Ізраїль послів до Сигона, царя Аморрейського, царя Есевонського, і сказав йому Ізраїль: дозволь нам пройти землею твоєю в своє місце. | And Israel sent messengers to Seon king of the Amorite, king of Esebon, and Israel said to him, Let us pass, we pray thee, by thy land to our place. |

| Але Сигон не погодився пропустити Ізраїля через межі свої, і зібрав Сигон весь народ свій, і розташувався станом у Іааці, і воював з Ізраїлем. | And Seon did not trust Israel to pass by his coast; and Seon gathered all his people, and they encamped at Jasa; and he set the battle in array against Israel. |

| І віддав Господь Бог Ізраїлів Сигона і весь народ його в руки Ізраїля, і він розбив їх; і одержав Ізраїль у спадщину всю землю Аморрея, що жив у землі тій; | And the Lord God of Israel delivered Seon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote him; and Israel inherited all the land of the Amorite who dwelt in that land, |

| і одержали вони у спадщину всі землі Аморрея від Арнона до Іавока і від пустелі до Йордану. | from Arnon and to Jaboc, and from the wilderness to Jordan. |

| Отже, Господь Бог Ізраїлів прогнав Аморрея від імені народу Свого Ізраїля, а ти хочеш узяти його спадщину? | And now the Lord God of Israel has removed the Amorite from before his people Israel, and shalt thou inherit his land? |
|

|
| Чи не володієш ти тим, що дав тобі Хамос, бог твій? І ми володіємо всім тим, що дав нам у спадщину Господь Бог наш. | Wilt thou not inherit those possessions which Chamos thy god shall cause thee to inherit; and shall not we inherit the land of all those whom the Lord our God has removed from before you? |

| Хіба ти кращий за Валака, сина Сепфорового, царя Моавитського? Чи сварився він з Ізраїлем, або воював з ними? | And now art thou any better than Balac son of Sepphor, king of Moab? Did he indeed fight with Israel, or indeed make war with him, |

|
| Ізраїль уже живе триста років у Есевоні й у залежних від нього містах, у Ароері і залежних від нього містах, і в усіх містах, що біля Арнона; чому ви в той час не віднімали [їх]? | when Israel dwelt in Esebon and in its coasts, and in the land of Aroer and in its coasts, and in all the cities by Jordan, three hundred years? and wherefore didst thou not recover them in that time? |

| А я не винен перед тобою, і ти робиш мені зло, виступивши проти мене війною. Господь Суддя нехай буде нині суддею між синами Ізраїля і між аммонитянами! | And now I have not sinned against thee, but thou wrongest me in preparing war against me: may the Lord the Judge judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon. |

| Але цар Аммонитський не послухав слів Ієффая, з якими він посилав до нього. | But the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not to the words of Jephthae, which he sent to him. |

|
| І був на Ієффаєві Дух Господній, і пройшов він Галаад і Манассію, і пройшов Массифу галаадську, і з Массифи галаадської пішов до аммонитян. | And the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthae, and he passed over Galaad, and Manasse, and passed by the watch-tower of Galaad to the other side of the children of Ammon. |

| І дав Ієффай обітницю Господу і сказав: якщо Ти віддаси аммонитян у руки мої, | And Jephthae vowed a vow to the Lord, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand, |

| то після повернення мого з миром від аммонитян, що вийде з воріт дому мого назустріч мені, буде Господу, і принесу це у всепалення. | then it shall come to pass that whosoever shall first come out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, he shall be the Lord's: I will offer him up for a whole-burnt-offering. |

| І прийшов Ієффай до аммонитян — воювати з ними, і віддав їх Господь у руки його; | And Jephthae advanced to meet the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord delivered them into his hand. |

| і вразив їх поразкою дуже великою, від Ароера до Минифа двадцять міст, і до Авель-Керамима, і підкорилися аммонитяни синам Ізраїлевим. | And he smote them from Aroer till one comes to Arnon, in number twenty cities, and as far as Ebelcharmim, with a very great destruction: and the children of Ammon were straitened before the children of Israel. |

| І прийшов Ієффай у Массифу в дім свій, і ось, дочка його виходить назустріч йому з тимпанами і бубнами: вона була в нього тільки одна, і не було в нього ще ні сина, ні дочки. | And Jephthae came to Massepha to his house; and behold, his daughter came forth to meet him with timbrels and dances; and she was his only child, he had not another son or daughter. |

| Коли він побачив її, роздер одяг свій і сказав: ох, дочко моя! ти вбила мене; і ти серед порушників спокою мого! я відкрив [про тебе] вуста мої перед Господом і не можу відректися. | And it came to pass when he saw her, that he rent his garments, and said, Ah, ah, my daughter, thou hast indeed troubled me, and thou wast the cause of my trouble; and I have opened my mouth against thee to the Lord, and I shall not be able to return from it. |

| Вона сказала йому: батьку мій! ти відкрив вуста твої перед Господом — і роби зі мною те, що вимовили вуста твої, коли Господь звершив через тебе помсту ворогам твоїм аммонитянам. | And she said to him, Father, hast thou opened thy mouth to the Lord? Do to me accordingly as the word went out of thy mouth, in that the Lord has wrought vengeance for thee on thine enemies of the children of Ammon. |

| І сказала батькові своєму: зроби мені тільки ось що: відпусти мене на два місяці; я піду, зійду на гори й оплачу дівоцтво моє з подругами моїми. | And she said to her father, Let my father now do this thing: let me alone for two months, and I will go up and down on the mountains, and I will bewail my virginity, I and my companions. |

| Єфремляни зібралися і перейшли в Севину і сказали Ієффаю: для чого ти ходив воювати з аммонитянами, а нас не покликав із собою? ми спалимо дім твій вогнем і з тобою разом. | And the men of Ephraim assembled themselves, and passed on to the north, and said to Jephthae, Wherefore didst thou go over to fight with the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thy house over thee with fire. |

| Ієффай сказав їм: я і народ мій мали з аммонитянами велику сварку; я кликав вас, але ви не спасли мене від рук їх; | And Jephthae said to them, I and my people and the children of Ammon were very much engaged in war; and I called for you, and ye did not save me out of their hand. |

|
| бачачи, що ви не спасаєте мене, я піддав небезпеці життя моє і пішов на аммонитян, і віддав їх Господь у руки мої; навіщо ж ви прийшли нині воювати зі мною? | And I saw that thou wert no helper, and I put my life in my hand, and passed on to the sons of Ammon; and the Lord delivered them into my hand: and wherefore are ye come up against me this day to fight with me? |

| І зібрав Ієффай усіх жителів галаадських і воював з єфремлянами, і розбили жителі галаадські єфремлян, говорячи: ви утікачі Єфремові, Галаад же серед Єфрема і серед Манассії. | And Jephthae gathered all the men of Galaad, and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Galaad smote Ephraim, because they that were escaped of Ephraim said, Ye are of Galaad in the midst of Ephraim and in the midst of Manasse. |

| І перехопили галаадитяни переправу через Йордан від єфремлян, і коли хто з уцілілих єфремлян говорив: «дозвольте мені переправитися», то жителі галаадські говорили йому: чи не єфремлянин ти? Він говорив: ні. | And Galaad took the fords of Jordan before Ephraim; and they that escaped of Ephraim said to them, Let us go over: and the men of Galaad said, Art thou an Ephrathite? and he said, No. |

| Вони говорили йому: «скажи: шибболет», а він говорив: «сибболет», і не міг інакше вимовити. Тоді вони, узявши його, заколювали біля переправи через Йордан. І загинуло в той час єфремлян сорок дві тисячі. | Then they said to him, Say now Stachys; and he did not rightly pronounce it so: and they took him, and slew him at the fords of Jordan; and there fell at that time of Ephraim two and forty thousand. |

| Ієффай був суддею Ізраїля шість років, і помер Ієффай галаадитянин і похований в одному з міст галаадських. | And Jephthae judged Israel six years; and Jephthae the Galaadite died, and was buried in his city Galaad. |

| Після нього був суддею Ізраїля Есевон з Вифлеєма. | And after him Abaissan of Bethleem judged Israel. |
|

|
| У нього було тридцять синів, і тридцять дочок відпустив він з дому [заміж], а тридцять дочок узяв зі сторони за синів своїх, і був суддею Ізраїля сім років. | And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent forth; and he brought in thirty daughters for his sons from without; and he judged Israel seven years. |

| І помер Есевон і похований у Вифлеємі. | And Abaissan died, and was buried in Bethleem. |

|
| Після нього був суддею Ізраїля Елон завулонянин і судив Ізраїль десять років. | And after him Ælom of Zabulon judged Israel ten years. |
|

|
| І помер Елон завулонянин і похований в Аїалоні, в землі Завулоновій. | And Ælom of Zabulon died, and was buried in Ælom in the land of Zabulon. |

|
| Після нього був суддею Ізраїля Авдон, син Гиллела, пирафонянин. | And after him Abdon the son of Ellel, the Pharathonite, judged Israel. |
|

|
| У нього було сорок синів і тридцять онуків, які їздили на сімдесяти молодих ослах; він судив Ізраїль вісім років. | And he had forty sons, and thirty grandsons, that rode upon seventy colts: and he judged Israel eight years. |
|

|
| І помер Авдон, син Гиллела, пирафонянин, і похований у Пирафоні в землі Єфремовій, на горі Амаликовій. | And Abdon the son of Ellel, the Pharathonite, died, and was buried in Pharathon in the land of Ephraim in the mount of Amalec. |

| Сини Ізраїлеві продовжували чинити зле перед очима Господа, і віддав їх Господь у руки филистимлян на сорок років. | And the children of Israel yet again committed iniquity before the Lord; and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Phylistines forty years. |

|
| У той час був чоловік з Цори, із племені Данового, на ім’я Маной; дружина його була неплідна і не народжувала. | And there was a man of Saraa, of the family of the kindred of Dan, and his name was Manoë, and his wife was barren, and bore not. |
|

|
| І явився ангел Господній дружині і сказав їй: ось, ти неплідна і не народжуєш; але зачнеш, і народиш сина; | And an angel of the Lord appeared to the woman, and said to her, Behold, thou art barren and hast not born; yet thou shalt conceive a son. |
|

|
| отже, бережися, не пий вина і сикера, і не їж нічого нечистого; | And now be very cautious, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat no unclean thing; |
|

|
5
|
| бо ось, ти зачнеш і народиш сина, і бритва не торкнеться голови його, тому що від самої утроби немовля це буде назореєм Божим, і він почне спасати Ізраїля від руки филистимлян. | for behold, thou art with child, and shalt bring forth a son; and there shall come no razor upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Phylistines. |

| Дружина прийшла і сказала чоловіку своєму: чоловік Божий приходив до мене, вигляд якого, як вигляд ангела Божого, дуже величний; я не запитала його, звідки він, і він не сказав мені імені свого; | And the woman went in, and spoke to her husband, saying, A man of God came to me, and his appearance was as of an angel of God, very dreadful; and I did not ask him whence he was, and he did not tell me his name. |

| він сказав мені: «ось, ти зачнеш і народиш сина; отже, не пий вина і сикера і не їж нічого нечистого, бо немовля від самої утроби до смерти своєї буде назореєм Божим». | And he said to me, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bring forth a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat no unclean thing; for the child shall be holy to God from the womb until the day of his death. |

| Маной помолився Господу і сказав: Господи! нехай прийде знову до нас чоловік Божий, якого посилав Ти, і навчить нас, що нам робити з дитиною, яка має народитися. | And Manoë prayed to the Lord and said, I pray thee, O Lord my Lord, concerning the man of God whom thou sentest; let him now come to us once more, and teach us what we shall do to the child about to be born. |

| І почув Бог голос Маноя, і ангел Божий знову прийшов до дружини, коли вона була на полі, і Маноя, чоловіка її, не було з нею. | And the Lord heard the voice of Manoë, and the angel of God came yet again to the woman; and she sat in the field, and Manoë her husband was not with her. |

| Дружина негайно побігла і сповістила чоловіка свого і сказала йому: ось, явився мені чоловік, який приходив до мене тоді. | And the woman hasted, and ran, and brought word to her husband, and said to him, Behold the man who came in the other day to me has appeared to me. |

| Маной встав і пішов з дружиною своєю, і прийшов до того чоловіка і сказав йому: чи ти той чоловік, який говорив із цією жінкою? [Ангел] сказав: я. | And Manoë arose and followed his wife, and came to the man, and said to him, Art thou the man that spoke to the woman? and the angel said, I am. |

| І сказав Маной: отже, якщо сповниться слово твоє, як нам поводитися з дитиною цією і що робити з нею? | And Manoë said, Now shall thy word come to pass: what shall be the ordering of the child, and our dealings with him? |

| Ангел Господній сказав Маною: нехай він остерігається усього, про що я сказав дружині; | And the angel of the Lord said to Manoë, Of all things concerning which I spoke to the woman, she shall beware. |
|

|
| нехай не їсть нічого, що вирощує виноградна лоза; нехай не п’є вина і сикера і не їсть нічого нечистого і дотримує всього, що я наказав їй. | She shall eat of nothing that comes of the vine yielding wine, and let her not drink wine or strong liquor, and let her not eat anything unclean: all things that I have charged her she shall observe. |

| І сказав Маной ангелу Господньому: дозволь затримати тебе, доки ми приготуємо для тебе козеня. | And Manoë said to the angel of the Lord, Let us detain thee here, and prepare before thee a kid of the goats. |
|

| Ангел Господній сказав Маною: хоча б ти й затримав мене, але я не буду їсти хліба твого; якщо ж хочеш звершити всепалення Господу, то принеси його. Маной же не знав, що це ангел Господній. | And the angel of the Lord said to Manoë, If thou shouldest detain me, I will not eat of thy bread; and if thou wouldest offer a whole-burnt-offering, to the Lord thou shalt offer it: for Manoë knew not that he was an angel of the Lord. |

| І сказав Маной ангелу Господньому: як твоє ім’я? щоб нам прославити тебе, коли сповниться слово твоє. | And Manoë said to the angel of the Lord, What is thy name, that when thy word shall come to pass, we may glorify thee? |

| Ангел Господній сказав йому: для чого ти запитуєш про ім’я моє? воно чудне. | And the angel of the Lord said to him, Why dost thou thus ask after my name; whereas it is wonderful? |
|

|
| І взяв Маной козеня і хлібне приношення і приніс Господу на камені. І зробив Він чудо, яке бачили Маной і дружина його. | And Manoë took a kid of the goats and its meat-offering, and offered it on the rock to the Lord; and the angel wrought a distinct work, and Manoë and his wife were looking on. |

| Коли полум’я стало підніматися від жертовника до неба, ангел Господній піднявся в полум’ї жертовника. Бачачи це, Маной і дружина його впали лицем на землю. | And it came to pass when the flame went up above the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the Lord went up in the flame; and Manoë and his wife were looking, and they fell upon their face to the earth. |

| І невидимим став ангел Господній Маною і дружині його. Тоді Маной зрозумів, що це ангел Господній. | And the angel appeared no more to Manoë and to his wife: then Manoë knew that this was an angel of the Lord. |

| І сказав Маной дружині своїй: мабуть, ми помремо, тому що бачили ми Бога. | And Manoë said to his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. |
|

|
| Дружина його сказала йому: якби Господь хотів умертвити нас, то не прийняв би від наших рук всепалення і хлібне приношення, і не показав би нам усього того, і тепер не відкрив би нам цього. | But his wife said to him, If the Lord were pleased to slay us, he would not have received of our hand a whole-burnt-offering and a meat-offering; and he would not have shewn us all these things, neither would he have caused us to hear all these things as at this time. |

| І народила дружина сина, і нарекла ім’я йому: Самсон. І росла дитина, і благословляв її Господь. | And the woman brought forth a son, and she called his name Sampson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. |

| І почав Дух Господній діяти в ній у стані Дановому, між Цорою й Естаолом. | And the Spirit of the Lord began to go out with him in the camp of Dan, and between Saraa and Esthaol. |

| І пішов Самсон у Фимнафу і побачив у Фимнафі жінку з дочок филистимських [і вона сподобалася йому]. | And Sampson went down to Thamnatha, and saw a woman in Thamnatha of the daughters of the Philistines. |

| Він пішов і оголосив батькові своєму і матері своїй і сказав: я бачив у Фимнафі жінку з дочок филистимських; візьміть її мені за дружину. | And he went up and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Thamnatha of the daughters of the Phylistines; and now take her to me for a wife. |

| Батько і мати його сказали йому: хіба немає жінок між дочками братів твоїх і в усьому народі моєму, що ти йдеш узяти дружину у филистимлян необрізаних? І сказав Самсон батькові своєму: її візьми мені, тому що вона мені сподобалася. | And his father and his mother said to him, Are there no daughters of thy brethren, and is there not a woman of all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Sampson said to his father, Take her for me, for she is right in my eyes. |

І не сказав батькові своєму і матері своїй, що він зробив. | And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he crushed him as he would have crushed a kid of the goats, and there was nothing in his hands: and he told not his father and his mother what he had done. |

| І прийшов і поговорив з жінкою, і вона сподобалася Самсону. | And they went down and spoke to the woman, and she was pleasing in the eyes of Sampson. |

| І сказав їм Самсон: загадаю я вам загадку; якщо ви відгадаєте мені її за сім днів бенкету і відгадаєте правильно, то я дам вам тридцять синдонів* і тридцять змін одягу; | And Sampson said to them, I propound you a riddle: if ye will indeed tell it me, and discover it within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty sheets and thirty changes of raiment. |

| В сьомий день сказали вони дружині Самсоновій: умов чоловіка твого, щоб він розгадав нам загадку; інакше спалимо вогнем тебе і дім батька твого; хіба ви покликали нас, щоб обібрати нас? | And it came to pass on the fourth day, that they said to the wife of Sampson, Deceive now thy husband, and let him tell thee the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father's house with fire: did ye invite us to do us violence? |

Він сказав їм: якби ви не орали на моїй телиці, то не відгадали б моєї загадки. | And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day, before sunrise, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? and Sampson said to them, If ye had not ploughed with my heifer, ye would not have known my riddle. |

І запалав гнів його, і пішов він у дім батька свого. | And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him powerfully, and he went down to Ascalon, and destroyed of the inhabitants thirty men, and took their garments, and gave the changes of raiment to them that told the riddle; and Sampson was very angry, and went up to the house of his father. |

| Через кілька днів, під час жнив пшениці, прийшов Самсон побачитися з дружиною своєю, принісши з собою козеня; і коли сказав: «увійду до дружини моєї в спальню», батько її не дав йому ввійти. | And it came to pass after a time, in the days of wheat harvest, that Sampson visited his wife with a kid, and said, I will go in to my wife even into the chamber: but her father did not suffer him to go in. |

| І сказав батько її: я подумав, що ти зненавидів її, і я віддав її другові твоєму; ось, менша сестра красивіша за неї; нехай вона буде тобі замість неї. | And her father spoke, saying, I said that thou didst surely hate her, and I gave her to one of thy friends: is not her younger sister better than she? let her be to thee instead of her. |

| Але Самсон сказав їм: тепер я буду правим перед филистимлянами, якщо зроблю їм зло. | And Sampson said to them, Even for once am I guiltless with regard to the Philistines, in that I do mischief among them. |

| І пішов Самсон, і впіймав триста лисиць, і взяв смолоскипи, і зв’язав хвіст із хвостом, і прив’язав по смолоскипу між двома хвостами; | And Sampson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put a torch between two tails, and fastened it. |

| і запалив смолоскипи, і пустив їх на жниво филистимське, і випалив і копиці і нежатий хліб, і виноградні сади й оливкові. | And he set fire to the torches, and sent the foxes into the corn of the Philistines; and every thing was burnt from the threshing floor to the standing corn, and even to the vineyard and olives. |

| І говорили филистимляни: хто це зробив? І сказали: Самсон, зять фимнафянина, бо цей узяв дружину його і віддав другові його. І пішли филистимляни і спалили вогнем її і [дім] батька її. | And the Philistines said, Who has done these things? and they said, Sampson the son-in-law of the Thamnite, because he has taken his wife, and given her to one of his friends; and the Philistines went up, and burnt her and her father's house with fire. |

| Самсон сказав їм: хоча ви зробили це, але я помщуся вам самим і тоді тільки заспокоюсь. | And Sampson said to them, Though ye may have dealt thus with her, verily I will be avenged of you, and afterwards I will cease. |

| І сказали жителі Іудеї: за що ви вийшли проти нас? Вони сказали: ми прийшли зв’язати Самсона, щоб учинити з ним, як він учинив з нами. | And the men of Juda said, Why are ye come up against us? and the Philistines said, We are come up to bind Sampson, and to do to him as he has done to us. |

| Знайшов він свіжу ослячу щелепу і, простягнувши руку свою, взяв її, і вбив нею тисячу чоловік. | And he found the jaw-bone of an ass that had been cast away, and he put forth his hand and took it, and smote with it a thousand men. |

| І сказав Самсон: щелепою ослячою юрбу, дві юрби, щелепою ослячою убив я тисячу чоловік. | And Sampson said, With the jaw-bone of an ass I have utterly destroyed them, for with the jaw-bone of an ass I have smitten a thousand men. |

| Сказавши це, кинув щелепу з рук своїх і назвав те місце: Рамаф-Лехи*. | And it came to pass when he ceased speaking, that he cast the jaw-bone out of his hand; and he called that place the Lifting of the jaw-bone. |

| І відчув сильну спрагу і воззвав до Господа і сказав: Ти зробив рукою раба Твого велике спасіння це; а тепер помру я від спраги, і потраплю в руки необрізаних. | And he was very thirsty, and wept before the Lord, and said, Thou hast been well pleased to grant this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant, and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised? |

| І розверз Бог щілину в Леху, і потекла з неї вода. Він напився, і повернувся дух його, і він ожив; від того і наречено ім’я місцю цьому: «Джерело того, хто взиває», яке у Леху до цього дня. | And God broke open a hollow place in the jaw, and there came thence water, and he drank; and his spirit returned and he revived: therefore the name of the fountain was called ‘The well of the invoker,’ which is in Lechi, until this day. |

| Прийшов одного разу Самсон у Газу і, побачивши там блудницю, увійшов до неї. | And Sampson went to Gaza, and saw there a harlot, and went in to her. |

| Жителям Гази сказали: Самсон прийшов сюди. І ходили вони навкруги, і підстерігали його всю ніч біля воріт міста, і ховалися всю ніч, говорячи: до світла ранкового почекаємо, і вб’ємо його. | And it was reported to the Gazites, saying, Sampson is come hither: and they compassed him and laid wait for him all night in the gate of the city, and they were quiet all the night, saying, Let us wait till the dawn appear, and we will slay him. |

| А Самсон спав до півночі; опівночі ж, уставши, схопив двері міських воріт з обома одвірками, підняв їх разом із запором, поклав на плечі свої і відніс їх на вершину гори, яка на шляху до Хеврона, [і поклав їх там]. | And Sampson slept till midnight, and rose up at midnight, and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city with the two posts, and lifted them up with the bar, and laid them on his shoulders, and he went up to the top of the mountain that is before Chebron, and laid them there. |

| До неї прийшли власники филистимські і говорять їй: умов його, і вивідай, у чому велика сила його і як нам здолати його, щоб зв’язати його й упокорити його; а ми дамо тобі за те кожен тисячу сто сиклів срібла. | And the princes of the Philistines came up to her, and said to her, Beguile him, and see wherein his great strength is, and wherewith we shall prevail against him, and bind him to humble him; and we will give thee each eleven hundred pieces of silver. |

| І сказала Даліда Самсону: скажи мені, в чому велика сила твоя і чим зв’язати тебе, щоб упокорити тебе? | And Dalida said to Sampson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein is thy great strength, and wherewith thou shalt be bound that thou mayest be humbled. |

| Самсон сказав їй: якщо зв’яжуть мене сімома сирими тятивами, які не висушені, то я зроблюся безсилим і буду як і інші люди. | And Sampson said to her, If they bind me with seven moist cords that have not been spoiled, then shall I be weak and be as one of ordinary men. |

І не пізнана сила його. | And the liers in wait remained with her in the chamber; and she said to him, The Philistines are upon thee, Sampson: and he broke the cords as if any one should break a thread of tow when it has touched the fire, and his strength was not known. |

| І сказала Даліда Самсону: ось, ти обманув мене і говорив мені неправду; скажи ж тепер мені, чим зв’язати тебе? | And Dalida said to Sampson, Behold, thou hast cheated me, and told me lies; now then tell me wherewith thou shalt be bound. |

Він сказав їй: якщо ти увіткнеш сім кіс голови моєї в тканину і приб’єш її цвяхом до ткальної колоди, [то я буду безсилим, як і інші люди]. | And Dalida said to Sampson, Behold, thou hast deceived me, and told me lies; tell me, I intreat thee, wherewith thou mayest be bound: and he said to her, If thou shouldest weave the seven locks of my head with the web, and shouldest fasten them with the pin into the wall, then shall I be weak as another man. |

| І сказала йому [Даліда]: як же ти говориш: «люблю тебе», а серце твоє не зі мною? ось, ти тричі обманув мене, і не сказав мені, в чому велика сила твоя. | And Dalida said to Sampson, How sayest thou, I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? this third time thou hast deceived me, and hast not told me wherein is thy great strength. |

| І оскільки вона словами своїми тяготила його кожного дня і мучила його, то душі його стало важко до смерти. | And it came to pass as she pressed him sore with her words continually, and straitened him, that his spirit failed almost to death. |

| І він відкрив їй усе серце своє, і сказав їй: бритва не торкалася голови моєї, тому що я назорей Божий від утроби матері моєї; якщо ж обстригти мене, то відступить від мене сила моя; я зроблюся слабким і буду, як інші люди. | Then he told her all his heart, and said to her, A razor has not come upon my head, because I have been a holy one of God from my mother's womb; if then I should be shaven, my strength will depart from me, and I shall be weak, and I shall be as all other men. |

| Даліда, бачачи, що він відкрив їй усе серце своє, послала і покликала власників филистимських, сказавши їм: йдіть тепер; він відкрив мені все серце своє. І прийшли до неї власники филистимські і принесли срібло в руках своїх. | And Dalida saw that he told her all his heart, and she sent and called the princes of the Philistines, saying, Come up yet this once; for he has told me all his heart. And the chiefs of the Philistines went up to her, and brought the money in their hands. |

| І приспала його [Даліда] на колінах своїх, і покликала чоловіка, і веліла йому обстригти сім кіс голови його. І почав він слабнути, і відступила від нього сила його. | And Dalida made Sampson sleep upon her knees; and she called a man, and he shaved the seven locks of his head, and she began to humble him, and his strength departed from him. |

| Вона сказала: филистимляни йдуть на тебе, Самсоне! Він пробудився від сну свого, і сказав: піду, як і раніше, і визволюся. А не знав, що Господь відступив від нього. | And Dalida said, The Philistines are upon thee, Sampson: and he awoke out of his sleep and said, I will go out as at former times, and shake myself; and he knew not that the Lord was departed from him. |

| Филистимляни взяли його і викололи йому очі, привели його в Газу й скували його двома мідними ланцюгами, і він молов у в’язниці. | And the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he ground in the prison-house. |

| Тим часом волосся на голові його почало рости, де воно було обстрижене. | And the hair of his head began to grow as before it was shaven. |

| Власники филистимські зібралися, щоб принести велику жертву Дагону, богу своєму, і повеселитися, і сказали: бог наш віддав Самсона, ворога нашого, в руки наші. | And the chiefs of the Philistines met to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon, and to make merry; and they said, God has given into our hand our enemy Sampson. |

| Також і народ, бачачи його, прославляв бога свого, говорячи: бог наш видав у руки наші ворога нашого, і спустошувача землі нашої, який убив багатьох з нас. | And the people saw him, and sang praises to their god; for our god, said they, has delivered into our hand our enemy, who wasted our land, and who multiplied our slain. |

| І коли розвеселилося серце їхнє, сказали: покличте Самсона [з в’язниці], нехай він забавляє нас. І покликали Самсона з в’язниці, і він забавляв їх, [і били його по обличчю] і поставили його між стовпами. | And when their heart was merry, then they said, Call Sampson out of the prison-house, and let him play before us: and they called Sampson out of the prison-house, and he played before them; and they smote him with the palms of their hands, and set him between the pillars. |

| Дім же був повен чоловіків і жінок; там були всі власники филистимські, і на покрівлі було до трьох тисяч чоловіків і жінок, які дивилися на Самсона, що забавляв їх. | And the house was full of men and women, and there were all the chiefs of the Philistines, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women looking at the sports of Sampson. |

| І воззвав Самсон до Господа і сказав: Господи Боже! згадай мене і зміцни мене тільки тепер, о Боже! щоб мені за один раз помститися филистимлянам за два ока мої. | And Sampson wept before the Lord, and said, O Lord, my Lord, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, O God, yet this once, and I will requite one recompense to the Philistines for my two eyes. |

| І зрушив Самсон з місця два середніх стовпи, на яких був утверджений дім, упершись у них, в один правою рукою своєю, а в другий лівою. | And Sampson took hold of the two pillars of the house on which the house stood, and leaned on them, and laid hold of one with his right hand, and the other with his left. |

| І сказав Самсон: помри, душе моя, з филистимлянами! Й уперся з усією силою, й обвалився дім на власників і на весь народ, що був у ньому. І було померлих, яких умертвив [Самсон] у смерті своїй, більше, ніж він умертвив за життя своє. | And Sampson said, Let my life perish with the Philistines: and he bowed himself mightily; and the house fell upon the princes, and upon all the people that were in it: and the dead whom Sampson slew in his death were more than those whom he slew in his life. |

Мати його сказала: благословенний син мій у Господа! | And he said to his mother, The eleven hundred pieces of silver which thou tookest to thyself, and about which thou cursedst me, and spokest in my ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it: and his mother said, Blessed be my son of the Lord. |

| І повернув він матері своїй тисячу сто сиклів срібла. І сказала мати його: це срібло я від себе присвятила Господу для [тебе,] сина мого, щоб зробити з нього ідола і відлитого кумира; отже, віддаю це тобі. | And he restored the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother; and his mother said, I had wholly consecrated the money to the Lord out of my hand for my son, to make a graven and a molten image, and now I will restore it to thee. |

| У ті дні не було царя в Ізраїля; кожен робив те, що йому здавалося справедливим. | And in those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own eyes. |
|

| Один юнак з Вифлеєма Юдейського, з коліна Іудиного, левит, тоді жив там; | And there was a young man in Bethleem of the tribe of Juda, and he was a Levite, and he was sojourning there. |
|

|
| цей чоловік пішов з міста Вифлеєма Юдейського, щоб пожити, де трапиться, і йдучи дорогою, прийшов на гору Єфремову до дому Михи. | And the man departed from Bethleem the city of Juda to sojourn in whatever place he might find; and he came as far as mount Ephraim, and to the house of Michaias to accomplish his journey. |

| І сказав йому Миха: звідки ти йдеш? Він сказав йому: я левит з Вифлеєма Юдейського і йду пожити, де трапиться. | And Michaias said to him, Whence comest thou? and he said to him, I am a Levite of Bethleem Juda, and I go to sojourn in any place I may find. |

| І сказав йому Миха: залишся у мене і будь у мене отцем і священиком; я буду давати тобі по десять сиклів срібла на рік, потрібний одяг і їжу. | And Michaias said to him, Dwell with me, and be to me a father and a priest; and I will give thee ten pieces of silver by the year, and a change of raiment, and thy living. |

| Левит пішов до нього і погодився левит залишитися у цієї людини, і був юнак у нього, як один із синів його. | And the Levite went and began to dwell with the man; and the young man was to him as one of his sons. |

| Миха посвятив левита, і цей юнак був у нього священиком і жив у домі Михи. | And Michaias consecrated the Levite, and he became to him a priest, and he was in the house of Michaias. |
|

|
| І сказав Миха: тепер я знаю, що Господь буде мені благодіяти, тому що левит у мене священиком. | And Michaias said, Now I know that the Lord will do me good, because a Levite has become my priest. |

| У ті дні не було царя в Ізраїля; і в ті дні коліно Данове шукало собі наділ, де б оселитися, тому що до того часу не випало йому повного наділу між колінами Ізраїлевими. | In those days there was no king in Israel; and in those days the tribe of Dan sought for itself an inheritance to inhabit, because no inheritance had fallen to it until that day in the midst of the tribes of the children of Israel. |

| І послали сини Дана від племені свого п’ять чоловік, мужів сильних, з Цори й Естаола, щоб оглянути землю й дізнатися про неї, і сказали їм: підіть, узнайте землю. Вони прийшли на гору Єфремову до дому Михи і ночували там. | And the sons of Dan sent from their families five men of valour, from Saraa and from Esthaol, to spy out the land and to search it; and they said to them, Go and search out the land. And they came as far as the mount of Ephraim to the house of Michaias and they lodged there, |

| Перебуваючи біля дому Михи, впізнали вони голос молодого левита і зайшли туди і запитали його: хто тебе привів сюди? що ти тут робиш і навіщо ти тут? | in the house of Michaias, and they recognised the voice of the young man the Levite, and turned in thither; and said to him, Who brought thee in hither? and what doest thou in this place? and what hast thou here? |

| Він сказав їм: те і те зробив для мене Миха, найняв мене, і я в нього священиком. | And he said to them, Thus and thus did Michaias to me, and he hired me, and I became his priest. |
|

| Вони сказали йому: запитай Бога, щоб знати нам, чи успішною буде путь наша, в яку ми йдемо. | And they said to him, Enquire now of God, and we shall know whether our way will prosper, on which we are going. |
|

|
| Священик сказав їм: ідіть з миром; перед Господом путь ваша, в яку ви йдете. | And the priest said to them, Go in peace; your way in which ye go, is before the Lord. |
|

|
| І пішли ті п’ять чоловіків, і прийшли в Лаїс, і побачили народ, який у ньому, що він живе спокійно, за звичаєм сидонян, тихий і безтурботний, і що не було в землі тій, щоб хто кривдив у чому або мав би владу: від сидонян вони жили далеко, і ні з ким не було у них ніякої справи. | And the five men went on, and came to Laisa; and they saw the people in the midst of it dwelling securely, at ease as is the manner of the Sidonians, and there is no one perverting or shaming a matter in the land, no heir extorting treasures; and they are far from the Sidonians, and they have no intercourse with any one. |

| І повернулися [ті п’ять чоловік] до братів своїх у Цору й Естаол, і сказали їм брати їхні: з чим ви? | And the five men came to their brethren to Saraa and Esthaol, and said to their brethren, Why sit ye here idle? |

| Вони сказали: встанемо і підемо на них; ми бачили землю, вона дуже добра; а ви задумалися: не баріться йти і взяти в спадщину ту землю; | And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good, yet ye are still: delay not to go, and to enter in to possess the land. |

| коли підете ви, прийдете до народу безтурботного, і земля та велика; Бог віддає її в руки ваші; це таке місце, де немає ні в чому нестатку, що виникає від землі. | And whensoever ye shall go, ye shall come in upon a people secure, and the land is extensive, for God has given it into your hand; a place where there is no want of anything that the earth affords. |

| І вирушили звідти з коліна Данового, з Цори й Естаола, шістсот чоловіків, оперезавшись військовою зброєю. | And there departed thence of the families of Dan, from Saraa and from Esthaol, six hundred men, girded with weapons of war. |

| Вони пішли і стали станом у Кириаф-Іаримі, в Юдеї. Тому і називають те місце станом Дановим до цього дня. Він позаду Кириаф-Іарима. | And they went up, and encamped in Cariathiarim in Juda; therefore it was called in that place the camp of Dan, until this day: behold, it is behind Cariathiarim. |

| Звідти вирушили вони на гору Єфремову і прийшли до дому Михи. | And they went on thence to the mount of Ephraim, and came to the house of Michaias. |
|

|
| І сказали ті п’ять чоловіків, що ходили оглядати землю Лаїс, братам своїм: чи знаєте, що в одному з домів цих є ефод, терафим, ідол і відлитий кумир? отже, подумайте, що зробити. | And the five men who went to spy out the land of Laisa answered, and said to their brethren, Ye know that there is in this place an ephod, and theraphin, and a graven and a molten image; and now consider what ye shall do. |

| І зайшли туди, і ввійшли в дім молодого левита, у дім Михи, і вітали його. | And they turned aside there, and went into the house of the young man, the Levite, even into the house of Michaias, and asked him how he was. |
|

|
| А шістсот чоловік із синів Данових, оперезані військовою зброєю, стояли біля воріт. | And the six hundred men of the sons of Dan who were girded with their weapons of war stood by the door of the gate. |
|

|
| П’ять же чоловік, які ходили оглядати землю, пішли, увійшли туди, взяли ідола й ефод і терафим і відлитого кумира. Священик стояв біля воріт з тими шістьмастами людьми, оперезаними військовою зброєю. | And the five men who went to spy out the land went up, and entered into the house of Michaias, and the priest stood. |

| Коли вони ввійшли в дім Михи і взяли ідола, ефод, терафим і відлитого кумира, священик сказав їм: що ви робите? | And they took the graven image, and the ephod, and the theraphin, and the molten image; and the priest said to them, What are ye doing? |

| Вони сказали йому: мовчи, поклади руку твою на вуста твої й іди з нами і будь у нас отцем і священиком; чи краще тобі бути священиком у домі однієї людини, ніж бути священиком у коліні або в племені Ізраїлевому? | And they said to him, Be silent, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and come with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be the priest of the house of one man, or to be the priest of a tribe and house for a family of Israel? |

| Священик зрадів, взяв ефод, терафим і ідола [і відлитого кумира], і пішов з народом. | And the heart of the priest was glad, and he took the ephod, and the theraphin, and the graven image, and the molten image, and went in the midst of the people. |

|
| Вони обернулися і пішли, і відпустили дітей, худобу і майно вперед. | So they turned and departed, and put their children and their property and their baggage before them. |
|

|
| Коли вони віддалилися від дому Михи, [Миха і] мешканці домів, сусідніх з домом Михи, зібралися і погналися за синами Дана, | They went some distance from the house of Michaias, and, behold, Michaias and the men in the houses near Michaias' house, cried out, and overtook the children of Dan. |

| і кричали синам Дана. [Сини Данові] обернулися і сказали Миху: чого тобі, що ти так кричиш? | And the children of Dan turned their face, and said to Michaias, What is the matter with thee that thou hast cried out? |

| [Миха] сказав: ви взяли богів моїх, яких я зробив, і священика, і пішли; чого ще більше? як же ви говорите: чого тобі? | And Michaias said, Because ye have taken my graven image which I made, and my priest, and are gone; and what have I remaining? and what is this that ye say to me, Why criest thou? |

| Сини Данові сказали йому: мовчи, щоб ми не чули голосу твого; інакше деякі з нас, розгнівавшись, нападуть на вас, і ти погубиш себе і родину твою. | And the children of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard with us, lest angry men run upon thee, and take away thy life, and the lives of thy house. |

| І пішли сини Данові шляхом своїм; Миха ж, бачачи, що вони сильніші за нього, пішов назад і повернувся в дім свій. | And the children of Dan went their way; and Michaias saw that they were stronger than himself, and he returned to his house. |
|

| А [сини Данові] узяли те, що зробив Миха, і священика, який був у нього, і пішли в Лаїс, проти народу спокійного і безтурботного, і знищили його мечем, а місто спалили вогнем. | And the children of Dan took what Michaias had made, and the priest that he had, and they came to Laisa, to a people quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire. |

| Нікому було допомогти, тому що він був віддалений від Сидона і ні з ким не мав справи. [Місто це] знаходилося в долині, що поблизу Беф-Рехова. І побудували знову місто й оселилися в ньому, | And there was no deliverer, because the city is far from the Sidonians, and they have no intercourse with men, and it is in the valley of the house of Raab; and they built the city, and dwelt in it. |

| і нарекли ім’я місту: Дан, за ім’ям батька свого Дана, сина Ізраїлевого; а раніше ім’я місту тому було: Лаїс. | And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and the name of the city was Ulamais before. |
|

|
| І поставили в себе сини Данові ідола; Іонафан же, син Гирсона, сина Манассії, сам і сини його були священиками в коліні Дановім до дня переселення жителів тієї землі; | And the children of Dan set up the graven image for themselves; and Jonathan son of Gerson son of Manasse, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan till the time of the carrying away of the nation. |

| і мали у себе ідола, зробленого Михою, весь той час, коли дім Божий знаходився в Силомі. | And they set up for themselves the graven image which Michaias made, all the days that the house of God was in Selom; and it was so in those days that there was no king in Israel. |

| У ті дні, коли не було царя в Ізраїля, жив один левит на схилі гори Єфремової. Він узяв собі наложницю з Вифлеєма Юдейського. | And there was a Levite sojourning in the sides of mount Ephraim, and he took to himself a concubine from Bethleem Juda. |
|

|
| Наложниця його посварилася з ним і пішла від нього в дім батька свого у Вифлеєм Юдейський і була там чотири місяці. | And his concubine departed from him, and went away from him to the house of her father to Bethleem Juda, and she was there four months. |
|

|
| Чоловік її встав і пішов за нею, щоб поговорити до серця її і повернути її до себе. З ним був слуга його і пара ослів. Вона ввела його в дім батька свого. | And her husband rose up, and went after her to speak kindly to her, to recover her to himself; and he had his young man with him, and a pair of asses; and she brought him into the house of her father; and the father of the damsel saw him, and was well pleased to meet him. |

| Батько цієї молодої жінки, побачивши його, з радістю зустрів його, і затримав його тесть його, батько молодої жінки. І пробув він у нього три дні; вони їли і пили і ночували там. | And his father-in-law, the father of the damsel, constrained him, and he staid with him for three days; and they ate and drank, and lodged there. |

| На четвертий день встали вони рано, і він встав, щоб іти. І сказав батько молодої жінки зятеві своєму: підкріпи серце твоє шматком хліба, і потім підете. | And it came to pass on the fourth day that they rose early, and he stood up to depart; and the father of the damsel said to his son-in-law, Strengthen thy heart with a morsel of bread, and afterwards ye shall go. |

| Вони залишилися, і обоє разом їли і пили. І сказав батько молодої жінки чоловікові тому: залишися ще на ніч, і нехай повеселиться серце твоє. | So they two sat down together and ate and drank: and the father of the damsel said to her husband, Tarry now the night, and let thy heart be merry. |

| Чоловік той устав, було, щоб іти, але тесть його ублагав його, і він знову ночував там. | And the man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law constrained him, and he staid and lodged there. |

| На п’ятий день устав він вранці, щоб іти. І сказав батько молодої жінки тієї: підкріпи серце твоє [хлібом], і забаріться, доки схилиться день. І їли обоє вони [і пили]. | And he rose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the father of the damsel said, Strengthen now thine heart, and quit thyself as a soldier till the day decline; and the two ate. |

| І встав той чоловік, щоб іти, сам він, наложниця його і слуга його. І сказав йому тесть його, батько молодої жінки: ось, день схилився до вечора, ночуйте, будь ласка; ось, день незабаром закінчиться, ночуй тут, нехай повеселиться серце твоє; завтра рано встанете в дорогу вашу, і підеш у дім твій. | And the man rose up to depart, he and his concubine, and his young man; but his father-in-law the father of the damsel said to him, Behold now, the day has declined toward evening; lodge here, and let thy heart rejoice; and ye shall rise early to-morrow for your journey, and thou shalt go to thy habitation. |

| Але чоловік не погодився ночувати, встав і пішов; і прийшов до Ієвуса, що нині Єрусалим; з ним пара нав’ючених ослів і наложниця його з ним. | But the man would not lodge there, but he arose and departed, and came to the part opposite Jebus, (this is Jerusalem,) and there was with him a pair of asses saddled, and his concubine was with him. |

| Коли вони були біля Ієвуса, день уже дуже схилився. І сказав слуга господарю своєму: зайдемо в це місто ієвусеїв і заночуємо в ньому. | And they came as far as Jebus: and the day had far advanced, and the young man said to his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn aside to this city of the Jebusites, and let us lodge in it. |

| Господар його сказав йому: ні, не підемо в місто іноплемінників, які не з синів Ізраїлевих, але дійдемо до Гиви. | And his master said to him, We will not turn aside to a strange city, where there is not one of the children of Israel, but we will pass on as far as Gabaa. |
|

|
| І сказав слузі своєму: дійдемо до одного з цих місць і заночуємо в Гиві або в Рамі. | And he said to his young man, Come, and let us draw nigh to one of the places, and we will lodge in Gabaa or in Rama. |
|

|
| І пішли, і йшли, і зайшло сонце біля Гиви Веніамінової. | And they passed by and went on, and the sun went down upon them near to Gabaa, which is in Benjamin. |
|

|
| І повернули вони туди, щоб піти заночувати в Гиві. І прийшов він і сів на вулиці в місті; але ніхто не запрошував їх у дім для ночівлі. | And they turned aside thence to go in to lodge in Gabaa; and they went in, and sat down in the street of the city, and there was no one who conducted them into a house to lodge. |

| І ось, іде один старий з роботи своєї з поля ввечері; він був родом з гори Єфремової і жив у Гиві. Жителі ж місця цього були синами Веніаміновими. | And behold, an old man came out of the field from his work in the evening; and the man was of mount Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gabaa, and the men of the place were sons of Benjamin. |

| Він, піднявши очі свої, побачив перехожого на вулиці міській. І сказав старий: куди йдеш? і звідки ти прийшов? | And he lifted up his eyes, and saw a traveller in the street of the city; and the old man said to him, Whither goest thou, and whence comest thou? |
|

| Він сказав йому: ми йдемо з Вифлеєма Юдейського на гору Єфремову, звідки я; я ходив у Вифлеєм Юдейський, а тепер іду до дому Господа; і ніхто не запрошує мене в дім; | And he said to him, We are passing by from Bethleem Juda to the sides of mount Ephraim: I am from thence, and I went as far as Bethleem Juda, and I am going home, and there is no man to take me into his house. |

| у нас є і солома і корм для ослів наших; також хліб і вино для мене і для раби твоєї і для цього слуги є в рабів твоїх; ні у чому немає нестатку. | Yet is there straw and food for our asses, and bread and wine for me and my handmaid and the young man with thy servants; there is no want of anything. |

| Старий сказав йому: будь спокійним: весь нестаток твій на мені, тільки не ночуй на вулиці. | And the old man said, Peace be to thee; only be every want of thine upon me, only do thou by no means lodge in the street. |
|

| І ввів його в дім свій і дав корм ослам [його], а самі вони обмили ноги свої і їли і пили. | And he brought him into his house, and made room for his asses; and they washed their feet, and ate and drank. |
|

| Тоді як вони розвеселили серця свої, ось, жителі міста, люди розпусні, оточили дім, стукали в двері і говорили старому, господареві дому: виведи чоловіка, який увійшов у дім твій, ми пізнаємо його. | And they were comforting their heart, when, behold, the men of the city, sons of transgressors, compassed the house, knocking at the door: and they spoke to the old man the owner of the house, saying, Bring out the man who came into thy house, that we may know him. |

| Господар дому вийшов до них і сказав їм: ні, брати мої, не чиніть зла, коли чоловік цей ввійшов у дім мій, не робіть цього безумства; | And the master of the house came out to them, and said, Nay, brethren, do not ye wrong, I pray you, after this man has come into my house; do not ye this folly. |

| ось у мене дочка дівчина, і в нього наложниця, виведу я їх, смиріть їх і робіть з ними, що вам завгодно; а з чоловіком цим не робіть цього безумства. | Behold my daughter a virgin, and the man's concubine: I will bring them out, and humble ye them, and do to them that which is good in your eyes; but to this man do not this folly. |

| Але вони не хотіли слухати його. Тоді чоловік узяв свою наложницю і вивів до них на вулицю. Вони пізнали її, і глумилися над нею всю ніч до ранку. І відпустили її з появою зорі. | But the men would not consent to hearken to him; so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they knew her, and abused her all night till the morning, and let her go when the morning dawned. |

| І прийшла жінка перед появою зорі, і впала біля дверей дому тієї людини, у якої був господар її, і лежала до світла. | And the woman came toward morning, and fell down at the door of the house where her husband was, until it was light. |

| Господар її встав зранку, відчинив двері дому і вийшов, щоб іти в дорогу свою: і ось, наложниця його лежить біля дверей дому, і руки її на порозі. | And her husband rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went forth to go on his journey; and, behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down by the doors of the house, and her hands were on the threshold. |

| Він сказав їй: вставай, підемо. Але відповіді не було, [тому що вона померла]. Він поклав її на осла, встав і пішов у своє місце. | And he said to her, Rise, and let us go; and she answered not, for she was dead: and he took her upon his ass, and went to his place. |

| Прийшовши в дім свій, він узяв ніж і, взявши наложницю свою, розрізав її за членами її на дванадцять частин і послав в усі краї Ізраїлеві. | And he took his sword, and laid hold of his concubine, and divided her into twelve parts, and sent them to every coast of Israel. |

| Всякий, хто бачив це, говорив: не бувало і не бачено було подібного до цього від дня виходу синів Ізраїлевих із землі Єгипетської до цього дня. [Посланим же від себе людям він дав наказ і сказав: так говоріть усьому Ізраїлю: чи бувало коли подібне до цього?] Зверніть увагу на це, порадьтеся і скажіть. | And it was so, that every one who saw it said, Such a day as this has not happened nor has been seen from the day of the going up of the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt until this day: take ye counsel concerning it, and speak. |

| І вийшли всі сини Ізраїлеві, і зібралася вся громада, як одна людина, від Дана до Вирсавії, і земля Галаадська перед Господом у Массифу. | And all the children of Israel went out, and all the congregation was gathered as one man, from Dan even to Bersabee, and in the land of Galaad, to the Lord at Massepha. |

| І зібралися [перед Господом] начальники всього народу, всі коліна Ізраїлеві, на зібрання народу Божого, чотириста тисяч піших, що оголюють меч. | And all the tribes of Israel stood before the Lord in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword. |

|
| І сини Веніамінові почули, що сини Ізраїлеві прийшли в Массифу. І сказали сини Ізраїлеві: скажіть, як відбувалося це зло? | And the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Massepha: and the children of Israel came and said, Tell us, where did this wickedness take place? |

| Левит, чоловік тієї убитої жінки, відповів і сказав: я з наложницею моєю прийшов ночувати в Гиву Веніамінову; | And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I and my concubine went to Gabaa of Benjamin to lodge. |

|
| і повстали на мене жителі Гиви й оточили через мене дім уночі; мене мали намір убити, і наложницю мою замучили, [наглумившись над нею,] так, що вона померла; | And the men of Gabaa rose up against me, and compassed the house by night against me; they wished to slay me, and they have humbled my concubine, and she is dead. |

| я взяв наложницю мою, розрізав її і послав її в усі області володіння Ізраїлевого, тому що вони зробили беззаконня і соромітну справу в Ізраїлі; | And I laid hold of my concubine, and divided her in pieces, and sent the parts into every coast of the inheritance of the children of Israel; for they have wrought lewdness and abomination in Israel. |

| ось усі ви, сини Ізраїлеві, розгляньте цю справу і вирішіть тут. | Behold, all ye are children of Israel; and consider and take counsel here among yourselves. |
|

|
| І повстав весь народ, як одна людина, і сказав: не підемо ніхто в намет свій і не повернемося ніхто в дім свій; | And all the people rose up as one man, saying, No one of us shall return to his tent, and no one of us shall return to his house. |
|

|
| і ось що ми зробимо нині з Гивою: [підемо] на неї за жеребом; | And now this is the thing which shall be done in Gabaa; we will go up against it by lot. |
|

| і візьмемо по десять чоловік зі ста від усіх колін Ізраїлевих, по сто від тисячі і по тисячі від десяти тисяч, щоб вони принесли харчові припаси для народу, який піде проти Гиви Веніамінової, покарати її за соромітну справу, яку вона зробила в Ізраїлі. | Moreover we will take ten men for a hundred for all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred for a thousand, and a thousand for ten thousand, to take provision, to cause them to come to Gabaa of Benjamin, to do to it according to all the abomination, which they wrought in Israel. |

| І зібралися всі ізраїльтяни проти міста одностайно, як одна людина. | And all the men of Israel were gathered to the city as one man. |
|

|
| І послали коліна Ізраїлеві в усе коліно Веніамінове сказати: яка це мерзенна справа зроблена у вас! | And the tribes of Israel sent men through the whole tribe of Benjamin, saying, What is this wickedness that has been wrought among you? |
|

|
| Видайте розбещених тих людей, що у Гиві; ми умертвимо їх і викорінимо зло з Ізраїля. Але сини Веніамінові не хотіли послухати голосу братів своїх, синів Ізраїлевих; | Now then give up the men the sons of transgressors that are in Gabaa, and we will put them to death, and purge out wickedness from Israel: but the children of Benjamin consented not to hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel. |

| а зібралися сини Веніамінові з міст у Гиву, щоб піти війною проти синів Ізраїлевих. | And the children of Benjamin were gathered from their cities to Gabaa, to go forth to fight with the children of Israel. |
|

|
| І налічилося у той день синів Веніамінових, тих, що зібралися з міст, двадцять шість тисяч чоловік, що оголюють меч; крім того, з жителів Гиви нараховано сімсот добірних; | And the children of Benjamin from their cities were numbered in that day, twenty-three thousand, every man drawing a sword, besides the inhabitants of Gabaa, who were numbered seven hundred chosen men of all the people, able to use both hands alike; |

| з усього народу цього було сімсот чоловік добірних, які були лівші, і всі ці, кидаючи з пращ камені у волосину, не кидали мимо. | all these could sling with stones at a hair, and not miss. |
|

|
| Ізраїльтян же, крім синів Веніамінових, нарахували чотириста тисяч чоловік, які оголюють меч; усі вони були здатні до війни. | And the men of Israel, exclusive of Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword; all these were men of war. |
|

|
| І встали і пішли в дім Божий, і запитали Бога і сказали сини Ізраїлеві: хто з нас першим піде на війну із синами Веніаміна? І сказав Господь: Іуда [піде] попереду. | And they arose and went up to Bæthel, and enquired of God: and the children of Israel said, Who shall go up for us first to fight with the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Juda shall go up first as leader. |

| І встали сини Ізраїлеві вранці і розташувалися станом біля Гиви; | And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gabaa. |
|

20
|
| і виступили ізраїльтяни на війну проти Веніаміна, і стали сини Ізраїлеві в бойовий порядок біля Гиви. | And they went out, all the men of Israel, to fight with Benjamin, and engaged with them at Gabaa. |
|

|
| І вийшли сини Веніамінові з Гиви і поклали в той день двадцять дві тисячі ізраїльтян на землю. | And the sons of Benjamin went forth from Gabaa, and they destroyed in Israel on that day two and twenty thousand men down to the ground. |
|

|
| Але народ Ізраїльський підбадьорився, і знову стали в бойовий порядок на тім місці, де стояли минулого дня. | And the men of Israel strengthened themselves, and again engaged in battle in the place where they had engaged on the first day. |
|

|
| І пішли сини Ізраїлеві, і плакали перед Господом до вечора, і запитували Господа: чи вступати мені ще у війну з синами Веніаміна, брата мого? Господь сказав: ідіть проти нього. | And the children of Israel went up, and wept before the Lord till evening, and enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall we again draw nigh to battle with our brethren the children of Benjamin? and the Lord said, Go up against them. |

| І підступили сини Ізраїлеві до синів Веніаміна на другий день. | And the children of Israel advanced against the children of Benjamin on the second day. |
|

|
| Веніамін вийшов проти них з Гиви на другий день, і ще поклали на землю із синів Ізраїлевих вісімнадцять тисяч чоловік, що оголюють меч. | And the children of Benjamin went forth to meet them from Gabaa on the second day, and destroyed of the children of Israel yet further eighteen thousand men down to the ground: all these drew sword. |

| Тоді всі сини Ізраїлеві і весь народ пішли і прийшли в дім Божий і, сидячи там, плакали перед Господом, і постились у той день до вечора, і принесли всепалення і мирні жертви перед Господом. | And the children of Israel and all the people went up, and came to Bæthel; and they wept, and sat there before the Lord; and they fasted on that day until evening, and offered whole-burnt-offerings and perfect sacrifices, before the Lord, |

| І запитували сини Ізраїлеві Господа [у той час ковчег завіту Божого знаходився там, | for the ark of the Lord God was there in those days, |
|

|
| і Финеєс, син Єлеазара, сина Ааронового, стояв перед ним]: чи виходити мені ще на війну із синами Веніаміна, брата мого, чи ні? Господь сказав: ідіть; Я завтра віддам його в руки ваші. | and Phinees the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron stood before it in those days; and the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall we yet again go forth to fight with our brethren the sons of Benjamin? and the Lord said, Go up, to-morrow I will give them into your hands. |

| І поставив Ізраїль засідку навколо Гиви. | And the children of Israel set an ambush against Gabaa round about it. |
|

|
| І пішли сини Ізраїлеві на синів Веніаміна на третій день і стали в бойовий порядок перед Гивою, як раніше. | And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and arrayed themselves against Gabaa as before. |
|

|
| Сини Веніамінові виступили проти народу і віддалилися від міста, і почали, як раніше, вбивати з народу на дорогах, з яких одна йде до Вефиля, а друга до Гиви полем, і вбили до тридцяти чоловік з ізраїльтян. | And the children of Benjamin went out to meet the people, and were all drawn out of the city, and began to smite and slay the people as before in the roads, whereof one goes up to Bæthel, and one to Gabaa in the field, about thirty men of Israel. |

| І сказали сини Веніамінові: вони падають перед нами, як і раніше. А сини Ізраїлеві сказали: побіжимо від них і відволічемо їх від міста на дороги. [І зробили так.] | And the children of Benjamin said, They fall before us as at the first: but the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them out from the city into the roads; and they did so. |

| І всі ізраїльтяни встали зі свого місця і вишикувалися у Ваал-Фамарі. І засідка Ізраїлева кинулася зі свого місця із західного боку Гиви. | And all the men rose up out of their places, and engaged in Baal Thamar; and the liers in wait of Israel advanced from their place from Maraagabe. |

| І прийшли до Гиви десять тисяч чоловік добірних з усього Ізраїлю, і почався жорстокий бій; але сини Веніаміна не знали, що має бути їм біда. | And there came over against Gabaa ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel; and the fight was severe; and they knew not that evil was coming upon them. |

| І вразив Господь Веніаміна перед ізраїльтянами, і поклали в той день ізраїльтяни з синів Веніаміна двадцять п’ять тисяч сто чоловік, які оголювали меч. | And the Lord smote Benjamin before the children of Israel; and the children of Israel destroyed of Benjamin in that day a hundred and twenty-five thousand men: all these drew sword. |

| Коли сини Веніаміна побачили, що вони розбиті, тоді ізраїльтяни поступилися місцем синам Веніаміна, бо сподівалися на засідку, яку вони поставили біля Гиви. | And the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten; and the men of Israel gave place to Benjamin, because they trusted in the ambuscade which they had prepared against Gabaa. |

| Засідка ж поспішила і кинулася до Гиви, і вступила і вразила все місто мечем. | And when they retreated, then the liers in wait rose up, and they moved on toward Gabaa, and the whole ambush came forth, and they smote the city with the edge of the sword. |

| Ізраїльтяни поставили із засідкою умовним знаком до нападу дим, що піднімається з міста. | And the children of Israel had a signal of battle with the liers in wait, that they should send up a signal of smoke from the city. |
|

|
39
|
| Отже, коли ізраїльтяни відступили з місця бою, і Веніамін почав уражати й убив ізраїльтян до тридцяти чоловік і говорив: «знову падають вони перед нами, як і в попередньому бою», | And the children of Israel saw that the liers in wait had seized Gabaa, and they stood in line of battle; and Benjamin began to smite down wounded ones among the men of Israel about thirty men; for they said, Surely they fall again before us, as in the first battle. |

| тоді почав підніматися з міста дим стовпом. Веніамін озирнувся назад, і ось, дим від усього міста піднімається до неба. | And the signal went up increasingly over the city as a pillar of smoke; and Benjamin looked behind him, and behold the destruction of the city went up to heaven. |
|

41
|
| Ізраїльтяни повернулися, а Веніамін злякався, тому що побачив, що прийшла його загибель. | And the men of Israel turned back, and the men of Benjamin hasted, because they saw that evil had come upon them. |
|
42
|
42
|
| І побігли вони від ізраїльтян по дорозі до пустелі; але військо переслідувало їх, і ті, що виходили з міст, убивали їх там; | And they turned to the way of the wilderness from before the children of Israel, and fled: but the battle overtook them, and they from the cities destroyed them in the midst of them. |
|

|
| оточили Веніаміна, і переслідували його до Менухи й уражали до самого східного боку Гиви. | And they cut down Benjamin, and pursued him from Nua closely till they came opposite Gabaa on the east. |
|

|

|
| І упало з синів Веніаміна вісімнадцять тисяч чоловік, людей сильних. | And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men: all these were men of might. |
|
45
|
45
|
| [Ті, що залишилися,] повернулися і побігли до пустелі, до скелі Риммона, й убили ще [ізраїльтяни] на дорогах п’ять тисяч чоловік; і гналися за ними до Гидома і ще вбили з них дві тисячі чоловік. | And the rest turned, and fled to the wilderness to the rock of Remmon; and the children of Israel picked off of them five thousand men; and the children of Israel went down after them as far as Gedan, and they smote of them two thousand men. |

| Усіх же синів Веніамінових, які упали в той день, було двадцять п’ять тисяч чоловік, які оголювали меч, і всі вони були людьми сильними. | And all that fell of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men that drew sword in that day: all these were men of might. |
|

| І повернулися [ті, що залишилися,] і втекли в пустелю, до скелі Риммона, шістсот чоловік, і залишалися там у кам’яній горі Риммоні чотири місяці. | And the rest turned, and fled to the wilderness to the rock of Remmon, even six hundred men; and they sojourned four months in the rock of Remmon. |

| Ізраїльтяни ж знову пішли до синів Веніамінових і вразили їх мечем, і людей у місті, і худобу, й усе, що тільки зустрічалося [у всіх містах], і все, що знаходилося на дорозі міста, спалили вогнем. | And the children of Israel returned to the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword from the city of Methla, even to the cattle, and every thing that was found in all the cities: and they burnt with fire the cities they found. |

|
| І поклялися ізраїльтяни в Массифі, говорячи: ніхто з нас не віддасть дочки своєї синам Веніаміна заміж. | Now the children of Israel swore in Massephath, saying, No man of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin for a wife. |
|

2
|
| І прийшов народ у дім Божий, і сиділи там до вечора перед Богом, і підняли голосне волання, і сильно плакали, | And the people came to Bæthel, and sat there until evening before God: and they lifted up their voice and wept with a great weeping; |
|

|
3
|
| і сказали: Господи, Боже Ізраїлів! для чого трапилося це в Ізраїлі, що не стало тепер у Ізраїля одного коліна? | and said, Wherefore, O Lord God of Israel, has this come to pass, that to-day one tribe should be counted as missing from Israel? |
|

|
| На другий день устав народ вранці, і спорудили там жертовник, і принесли всепалення і мирні жертви. | And it came to pass on the morrow that the people rose up early, and built there an altar, and offered up whole-burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. |
|

| І сказали сини Ізраїлеві: хто не приходив на зібрання перед Господом з усіх колін Ізраїлевих? Бо велике прокляття було проголошено на тих, які не прийшли перед Господом у Массифу, і було сказано, що ті віддані будуть на смерть. | And the children of Israel said, Who of all the tribes of Israel, went not up in the congregation to the Lord? for there was a great oath concerning those who went not up to the Lord to Massephath, saying, He shall surely be put to death. |

| І зласкавилися сини Ізраїлеві над Веніаміном, братом своїм, і сказали: нині відсічене одне коліно від Ізраїля; | And the children of Israel relented toward Benjamin their brother, and said, To-day one tribe is cut off from Israel. |
|

|
| як вчинити нам з тими, що залишилися з них, стосовно дружин, коли ми поклялися Господом не давати їм дружин з дочок наших? | What shall we do for wives for the rest that remain? whereas we have sworn by the Lord, not to give them of our daughters for wives. |
|

8
|
| І сказали: чи немає кого з колін Ізраїлевих, хто не приходив перед Господом у Массифу? І виявилося, що з Іависа галаадського ніхто не приходив перед Господом у стан на зібрання. | And they said, What one man is there of the tribes of Israel, who went not up to the Lord to Massephath? and, behold, no man came to the camp from Jabis Galaad to the assembly. |

| І оглянули народ, і ось, не було там жодного з жителів Іависа галаадського. | And the people were numbered, and there was not there a man from the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad. |
|

|
| І послала туди громада дванадцять тисяч чоловік, чоловіків сильних, і дали їм наказ, говорячи: йдіть і знищіть жителів Іависа галаадського мечем, і жінок і дітей; | And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the strongest, and they charged them, saying, Go ye and smite the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad with the edge of the sword. |

| і ось що зробіть: усякого чоловіка і всяку жінку, що пізнала ложе чоловікове, піддайте закляттю, [а дівчат залишайте живими. І зробили так]. | And this shall ye do: every male and every woman that has known the lying with man ye shall devote to destruction, but the virgins ye shall save alive: and they did so. |

| І знайшли вони між жителями Іависа галаадського чотириста дівчат, які не пізнали ложа чоловікового, і привели їх у стан у Силом, що в землі Ханаанській. | And they found among the inhabitants of Jabis Galaad four hundred young virgins, who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to Selom in the land of Chanaan. |

|
| І послала вся громада переговорити із синами Веніаміна, які були в скелі Риммоні, і оголосила їм мир. | And all the congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin in the rock Remmon, and invited them to make peace. |
|

|
| Тоді повернулися сини Веніаміна [до ізраїльтян], і дали їм [ізраїльтяни] дружин, яких залишили в живих з жінок Іависа галаадського; але виявилося, що цього було недостатньо. | And Benjamin returned to the children of Israel at that time, and the children of Israel gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the daughters of Jabis Galaad; and they were content. |

| Народ же жалкував за Веніаміном, що Господь не зберіг цілости колін Ізраїлевих. | And the people relented for Benjamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel. |
|

|
| І сказали старійшини громади: що нам робити з тими, що залишилися, стосовно дружин, бо знищені жінки у Веніаміна? | And the elders of the congregation said, What shall we do for wives for them that remain? for the women have been destroyed out of Benjamin. |
|

|
17
|
| І сказали: спадкоємна земля нехай залишається синам Веніаміна, які вціліли, щоб не зникло коліно від Ізраїля; | And they said, There must be an inheritance of them that are escaped of Benjamin; and so a tribe shall not be destroyed out of Israel. |
|

|
18
|
| але ми не можемо дати їм дружин з дочок наших; тому що сини Ізраїлеві поклялися, говорячи: проклятий, хто дасть дружину Веніаміну. | For we shall not be able to give them wives of our daughters, because we swore among the children of Israel, saying, Cursed is he that gives a wife to Benjamin. |

| І сказали: ось, щороку буває свято Господнє у Силомі, що на північ від Вефиля і на схід від дороги, яка веде від Вефиля в Сихем, і на південь від Левони. | And they said, Lo! now there is a feast of the Lord from year to year in Selom, which is on the north of Bæthel, eastward on the way that goes up from Bæthel to Sychem, and from the south of Lebona. |

| І наказали синам Веніаміна і сказали: підіть і засядьте у виноградниках, | And they charged the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards; |
|

|
| і дивіться, коли вийдуть дівчата силомські танцювати в хороводах, тоді вийдіть з виноградників і захопіть собі кожен дружину з дівчат силомських і йдіть у землю Веніамінову; | and ye shall see; and lo! if there come out the daughters of the inhabitants of Selom to dance in dances, then shall ye go out of the vineyards and seize for yourselves every man a wife of the daughters of Selom, and go ye into the land of Benjamin. |

| і коли прийдуть батьки їхні, або брати їхні зі скаргою до нас, ми скажемо їм: простіть нас за них, бо ми не взяли для кожного з них дружини на війні, і ви не дали їм; тепер ви винні. | And it shall come to pass, when their fathers or their brethren come to dispute with us, that we will say to them, Grant them freely to us, for we have not taken every man his wife in the battle: because ye did not give to them according to the occasion, ye transgressed. |

| Сини Веніаміна так і зробили, і взяли дружин за числом своїм з тих, що були у хороводі, яких вони викрали, і пішли і повернулися в наділ свій, і побудували міста і стали жити в них. | And the children of Benjamin did so; and they took wives according to their number from the dancers whom they seized: and they went and returned to their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them. |

| У той же час ізраїльтяни розійшлися звідти кожен у коліно своє й у плем’я своє, і пішли звідти кожен у наділ свій. | And the children of Israel went thence at that time every man to his tribe and his kindred; and they went thence every man to his inheritance. |
|

|
| У ті дні не було царя в Ізраїлі; кожен робив те, що йому здавалося справедливим. | And in those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own sight. |
