Глава 1	Chapter 1

У ті дні, коли управляли судді, настав голод на землі. І пішов один чоловік з Вифлеєма Юдейського зі своєю дружиною і двома синами своїми жити на полях моавитських.	And it came to pass when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land: and a man went from Bethleem Juda to sojourn in the land of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

Ім’я чоловіка того Елимелех, ім’я дружини його Ноєминь, а імена двох синів його Махлон і Хилеон; вони були ефрафяни з Вифлеєма Юдейського. І прийшли вони на поля моавитські і залишилися там.	And the man's name was Elimelech, and his wife's name Noemin, and the names of his two sons Maalon and Chelaion, Ephrathites of Bethleem of Juda: and they came to the land of Moab, and remained there.

І помер Елимелех, чоловік Ноємині, і залишилася вона з двома синами своїми.	And Elimelech the husband of Noemin died; and she was left, and her two sons.

Вони взяли собі дружин з моавитянок, ім’я однієї Орфа, а ім’я другої Руф, і жили там близько десяти років.	And they took to themselves wives, women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpha, and the name of the second Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years.

Але потім і обидва [сини її], Махлон і Хилеон, померли, і залишилася та жінка після обох своїх синів і після чоловіка свого.	And both Maalon and Chelaion died also; and the woman was left of her husband and her two sons.

And she rose up and her two daughters-in-law, and they returned out of the country of Moab, for she heard in the country of Moab that the Lord had visited his people to give them bread.

І вийшла вона з того місця, в якому жила, і обидві невістки її з нею. Коли вони йшли по дорозі, повертаючись в землю Юдейську,	And she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her: and they went by the way to return to the land of Juda.

Ноєминь сказала двом невісткам своїм: ідіть, повернетеся кожна в дім матері своєї; нехай сотворить Господь з вами милість, як ви чинили з померлими і зі мною!	And Noemin said to her daughters-in-law, Go now, return each to the house of her mother: the Lord deal mercifully with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.

хай дасть вам Господь, щоб ви знайшли пристановище кожна в домі свого чоловіка! І поцілувала їх. Але вони підняли крик і плакали	The Lord grant you that ye may find rest each of you in the house of her husband: and she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.

Ноєминь же сказала: повертайтеся, дочки мої; навіщо вам іти зі мною? Хіба ще є в мене сини в моїй утробі, які були б вам чоловіками?	And Noemin said, Return now, my daughters; and why do ye go with me? have I yet sons in my womb to be your husbands?

Повертайтеся, дочки мої, йдіть, бо я вже стара, щоб бути одруженою. Та якби я й сказала: «є у мене ще надія», і навіть якби я у цю ж ніч була з чоловіком і потім народила синів, —	Turn now, my daughters, for I am too old to be married: for I said, Suppose I were married, and should bear sons;

то чи можна вам чекати, поки вони виросли б? чи можна вам баритися і не виходити заміж? Ні, дочки мої, я дуже уболіваю за вас, бо рука Господня відвідала мене.	would ye wait for them till they should be grown? or would ye refrain from being married for their sakes? Not so, my daughters; for I am grieved for you, that the hand of the Lord has gone forth against me.

Вони підняли крик і знову стали плакати. І Орфа попрощалася зі свекрухою своєю [і повернулася до народу свого], а Руф залишилася з нею.	And they lifted up their voice, and wept again; and Orpha kissed her mother-in-law and returned to her people; but Ruth followed her.

[Ноєминь] сказала [Руфі]: ось, невістка твоя повернулася до народу свого і до своїх богів; повернись і ти слідом за невісткою твоєю.	And Noemin said to Ruth, Behold, thy sister-in-law has returned to her people and to her gods; turn now thou also after thy sister-in-law.

Але Руф сказала: не примушуй мене залишити тебе і повернутися від тебе; але куди ти підеш, туди і я піду, і де ти жити будеш, там і я буду жити; народ твій буде моїм народом, і твій Бог — моїм Богом;	And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following thee; for whithersoever thou goest, I will go, and wheresoever thou lodgest, I will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.

і де ти помреш, там і я помру і похована буду; нехай те і те зробить мені Господь, і ще більше зробить; смерть одна розлучить мене з тобою.	And wherever thou diest, I will die, and there will I be buried: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if I leave thee, for death only shall divide between me and thee.

[Ноєминь,] бачачи, що вона твердо вирішила йти з нею, перестала умовляти її.	And Noemin seeing that she was determined to go with her, ceased to speak to her any more.
19	19
І йшли обидві вони, доки не прийшли у Вифлеєм. Коли прийшли вони у Вифлеєм, усе місто прийшло в рух від них, і говорили: це Ноєминь?	And they went both of them until they came to Bethleem: and it came to pass, when they arrived at Bethleem, that all the city rang with them, and they said, Is this Noemin?

Вона сказала їм: не називайте мене Ноєминню^, а називайте мене Марою^, тому що Вседержитель послав мені велику біду;	And she said to them, Nay, do not call me Noemin; call me ‘Bitter,’ for the Mighty One has dealt very bitterly with me.

I went out full, and the Lord has brought me back empty: and why call ye me Noemin, whereas the Lord has humbled me, and the Mighty One has afflicted me?

І повернулася Ноєминь, і з нею невістка її Руф моавитянка, яка прийшла з полів моавитських, і прийшли вони у Вифлеєм на початку жнив ячменю.	So Noemin and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, returned from the country of Moab; and they came to Bethleem in the beginning of barley harvest.
Глава 2	Chapter 2

1	1
У Ноємині був родич з боку чоловіка її, людина дуже знатна, з племені Елимелехового, ім’я йому Вооз.	And Noemin had a friend an acquaintance of her husband, and the man was a mighty man of the kindred of Elimelech, and his name was Booz.

І сказала Руф моавитянка Ноємині: піду я на поле і буду підбирати колосся за слідами того, у кого знайду благовоління. Вона сказала їй: іди, дочко моя.	And Ruth the Moabitess said to Noemin, Let me go now to the field, and I will glean among the ears behind the man with whomsoever I shall find favour: and she said to her, Go, daughter.

Вона пішла, і прийшла, і підбирала в полі колосся за женцями. І трапилося, що та частина поля належала Воозу, який із племені Елимелехового.	And she went; and came and gleaned in the field behind the reapers; and she happened by chance to come on a portion of the land of Booz, of the kindred of Elimelech.

І ось, Вооз прийшов з Вифлеєма і сказав женцям: Господь з вами! Вони сказали йому: нехай благословить тебе Господь!	And, behold, Booz came from Bethleem, and said to the reapers, The Lord be with you: and they said to him, The Lord bless thee.

І сказав Вооз слузі своєму, приставленому до женців: чия це молода жінка?	And Booz said to his servant who was set over the reapers, Whose is this damsel?

Слуга, приставлений до женців, відповів і сказав: ця молода жінка — моавитянка, яка прийшла з Ноєминню з полів моавитських;	And his servant who was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel who returned with Noemin out of the land of Moab.

And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers: and she came and stood from morning till evening, and rested not even a little in the field.

І сказав Вооз Руфі: послухай, дочко моя, не ходи підбирати на іншому полі і не переходь звідси, але будь тут з моїми служницями;	And Booz said to Ruth, Hast thou not heard, my daughter? go not to glean in another field; and depart not thou hence, join thyself here with my damsels.

нехай в очах твоїх буде те поле, де вони жнуть, і ходи за ними; ось, я наказав слугам моїм не чіпати тебе; коли захочеш пити, йди до сосудів і пий, звідки черпають слуги мої.	Let thine eyes be on the field where my men shall reap, and thou shalt go after them: behold, I have charged the young men not to touch thee: and when thou shalt thirst, then thou shalt go to the vessels, and drink of that which the young men shall have drawn.

And she fell upon her face, and did reverence to the ground, and said to him, How is it that I have found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take notice of me, whereas I am a stranger?

Вооз відповів і сказав їй: мені сказано все, що зробила ти для свекрухи своєї після смерти чоловіка твого, що ти залишила твого батька і твою матір і твою батьківщину і прийшла до народу, якого ти не знала вчора і третього дня;	And Booz answered and said to her, It has fully been told me how thou hast dealt with thy mother-in-law after the death of thy husband; and how thou didst leave thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy birth, and camest to a people whom thou knewest not before.

нехай воздасть Господь за цю справу твою, і нехай буде тобі повна нагорода від Господа Бога Ізраїлевого, до Якого ти прийшла, щоб заспокоїтися під Його крилами!	The Lord recompense thy work: may a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, to whom thou hast come to trust under his wings.
13	13
Вона сказала: нехай буду я в милості перед очима твоїми, господарю мій! Ти втішив мене і говорив до серця раби твоєї, тим часом як я не варта жодної з рабинь твоїх.	And she said, Let me find grace in thy sight, my lord, because thou hast comforted me, and because thou hast spoken kindly to thy handmaid, and behold, I shall be as one of thy servants.

І сказав їй Вооз: час обіду; прийди сюди і їж хліб і вмочуй шматок твій в оцет. І сіла вона біля женців. Він подав їй хліба; вона їла, наїлася, і ще залишилося.	And Booz said to her, Now it is time to eat; come hither, and thou shalt eat of the bread, and thou shalt dip thy morsel in the vinegar: and Ruth sat by the side of the reapers, and Booz handed her meal, and she ate, and was satisfied, and left.

І встала, щоб підбирати. Вооз дав наказ слугам своїм, сказавши: нехай підбирає вона і між снопами, і не кривдьте її;	And she rose up to glean; and Booz charged his young men, saying, Let her even glean among the sheaves, and reproach her not.
16	16
та й від снопів відкидайте їй і залишайте, нехай вона підбирає [і їсть], і не сваріть її.	And do ye by all means carry it for her, and ye shall surely let fall for her some of that which is heaped up; and let her eat, and glean, and rebuke her not.

Так підбирала вона на полі до вечора і вимолотила зібране, і вийшло близько ефи ячменю.	So she gleaned in the field till evening, and beat out that she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley.
18	18
Узявши це, вона пішла в місто, і свекруха її побачила, що вона набрала. І вийняла [Руф з пазухи своєї] і дала їй те, що залишила, наївшись сама.	And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned, and Ruth brought forth and gave to her the food which she had left from what she had been satisfied with.

And her mother-in-law said to her, Where hast thou gleaned to-day, and where hast thou wrought? blessed be he that took notice of thee. And Ruth told her mother-in-law where she had wrought, and said, The name of the man with whom I wrought to-day is Booz.

І сказала Ноєминь невістці своїй: благословенний він від Господа за те, що не позбавив милости своєї ні живих, ні мертвих! І сказала їй Ноєминь: чоловік цей близький до нас; він з наших родичів.	And Noemin said to her daughter-in-law, Blessed is he of the Lord, because he has not failed in his mercy with the living and with the dead: and Noemin said to her, The man is near akin to us, he is one of our relations.
21	21
Руф моавитянка сказала [свекрусі своїй]: він навіть сказав мені: будь з моїми служницями, доки не закінчать вони жнива мої.	And Ruth said to her mother-in-law, Yea, he said also to me, Keep close to my damsels, until the men shall have finished all my reaping.
22	22
І сказала Ноєминь невістці своїй Руфі: добре, дочко моя, що ти будеш ходити зі служницями його, і не будуть ображати тебе на іншому полі.	And Noemin said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is well, daughter, that thou wentest out with his damsels; thus they shall not meet thee in another field.

Так була вона зі служницями Воозовими і підбирала [колосся], доки не скінчилися жнива ячменю і жнива пшениці, і жила у свекрухи своєї.	And Ruth joined herself to the damsels of Booz to glean until they had finished the barley-harvest and the wheat-harvest.
Глава 3	Chapter 3

1	1
І сказала їй Ноєминь, свекруха її: дочко моя, чи не пошукати тобі пристановища, щоб тобі добре було?	And she lodged with her mother-in-law: and Noemin her mother-in-law said to her, My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?
2	2
Ось, Вооз, зі служницями якого ти була, родич наш; ось, він у цю ніч віє на току ячмінь;	And now is not Booz our kinsman, with whose damsels thou wast? behold, he winnows barley this night in the floor.
3	3
умийся, намастися, вдягни на себе [ошатний] одяг твій і піди на тік, але не показуйся йому, доки не скінчить їсти і пити;	But do thou wash, and anoint thyself, and put thy raiment upon thee, and go up to the threshing-floor: do not discover thyself to the man until he has done eating and drinking.

коли ж він ляже спати, довідайся про місце, де він ляже; тоді прийдеш і відкриєш біля ніг його і ляжеш; він скаже тобі, що тобі робити.	And it shall come to pass when he lies down, that thou shalt mark the place where he lies down, and shalt come and lift up the covering of his feet, and shalt lie down; and he shall tell thee what thou shalt do.

[Руф] сказала їй: зроблю все, що ти сказала мені.	And Ruth said to her, All that thou shalt say, I will do.

І пішла на тік і зробила все так, як наказувала їй свекруха її.	And she went down to the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law enjoined her.

Вооз наївся і напився, і розвеселив серце своє, і пішов і ліг спати біля скирти. І вона прийшла тихенько, відкрила біля ніг його і лягла.	And Booz ate and drank, and his heart was glad, and he came to lie down by the side of the heap of corn; and she came secretly, and lifted up the covering of his feet.

Опівночі він здригнувся, піднявся, і ось, біля ніг його лежить жінка.	And it came to pass at midnight that the man was amazed, and troubled, and behold, a woman lay at his feet.

І сказав [їй Вооз]: хто ти? Вона сказала: я Руф, раба твоя, простягни крило твоє на рабу твою, тому що ти родич.	And he said, Who art thou? and she said, I am thine handmaid Ruth; spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid, for thou art a near relation.

[Вооз] сказав: благословенна ти від Господа [Бога], дочко моя! це останнє твоє добре діло зробила ти ще краще за попереднє, що ти не пішла шукати молодих людей, ні бідних, ні багатих;	And Booz said, Blessed be thou of the Lord God, my daughter, for thou hast made thy latter kindness greater than the former, in that thou followest not after young men, whether any be poor or rich.

отже, дочко моя, не бійся, я зроблю тобі все, що ти сказала; тому що біля всіх воріт народу мого знають, що ти жінка доброчесна;	And now fear not, my daughter, whatever thou shalt say I will do to thee; for all the tribe of my people knows that thou art a virtuous woman.
12	12
хоча і правда, що я родич, але є ще родич ближче мене;	And now I am truly akin to thee; nevertheless there is a kinsman nearer than I.
13	13
переночуй цю ніч; завтра ж, якщо він прийме тебе, то добре, нехай прийме; а якщо він не захоче прийняти тебе, то я прийму; живий Господь! Спи до ранку.	Lodge here for the night, and it shall be in the morning, if he will do the part of a kinsman to thee, well—let him do it: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, I will do the kinsman's part to thee, as the Lord lives; lie down till the morning.

І спала вона в ногах його до ранку і встала раніше, ніж могли вони розпізнати одне одного. І сказав Вооз: нехай не знають, що жінка приходила на тік.	And she lay at his feet until the morning; and she rose up before a man could know his neighbour; and Booz said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
15	15
І сказав їй: подай верхній одяг, що на тобі, потримай його. Вона тримала, і він відміряв [їй] шість мір ячменю, і поклав на неї, і пішов у місто.	And he said to her, Bring the apron that is upon thee: and she held it, and he measured six measures of barley, and put them upon her, and she went into the city.

А [Руф] прийшла до свекрухи своєї. Та сказала [їй]: що, дочко моя? Вона переказала їй усе, що зробив їй чоловік той.	And Ruth went in to her mother-in-law, and she said to her, My daughter! and Ruth told her all that the man had done to her.

І сказала [їй]: ці шість мір ячменю він дав мені і сказав мені: не ходи до свекрухи своєї з порожніми руками.	And she said to her, He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said to me, Go not empty to thy mother-in-law.

Та сказала: почекай, дочко моя, доки не дізнаєшся, чим скінчиться справа; бо чоловік той не залишиться у спокої, не скінчивши сьогоднішньої справи.	And she said, Sit still, my daughter, until thou shalt know how the matter will fall out; for the man will not rest until the matter be accomplished this day.
Глава 4	Chapter 4

1	1
Вооз вийшов до воріт і сидів там. І ось, іде мимо родич, про якого говорив Вооз. І сказав йому [Вооз]: зайди сюди і сядь тут. Той зайшов і сів.	And Booz went up to the gate, and sat there; and behold, the relative passed by, of whom Booz spoke: and Booz said to him, Turn aside, sit down here, such a one: and he turned aside and sat down.

[Вооз] узяв десять чоловік із старійшин міста і сказав: сядьте тут. І вони сіли.	And Booz took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye here; and they sat down.
3	3
І сказав [Вооз] родичеві: Ноєминь, яка повернулася з полів моавитських, продає частину поля, що належить братові нашому Елимелеху;	And Booz said to the relative, The matter regards the portion of the field which was our brother Elimelech's which was given to Noemin, now returning out of the land of Moab;

я зважився довести до вух твоїх і сказати: купи в присутності тих, що сидять тут, і в присутності старійшин народу мого; якщо хочеш викупити, викуповуй; а якщо не хочеш викупити, скажи мені, і я буду знати; бо, крім тебе, нема кому викупити; а після тебе я. Той сказав: я викуповую.	and I said, I will inform thee, saying, Buy it before those that sit, and before the elders of my people: if thou wilt redeem it, redeem it, but if thou wilt not redeem it, tell me, and I shall know; for there is no one beside thee to do the office of a kinsman, and I am after thee: and he said, I am here, I will redeem it.

Вооз сказав: якщо ти купиш поле в Ноємині, то повинен купити й у Руфі моавитянки, дружини померлого, і повинен взяти її заміж, щоб відновити ім’я померлого у наділі його.	And Booz said, In the day of thy buying the field of the hand of Noemin and of Ruth the Moabitess the wife of the deceased, thou must also buy her, so as to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.

І сказав той родич: не можу я взяти її собі, щоб не розладнати свого наділу; прийми її ти, бо я не можу прийняти.	And the kinsman said, I shall not be able to redeem it for myself, lest I mar my own inheritance; do thou redeem my right for thyself, for I shall not be able to redeem it.

Раніше такий був звичай у Ізраїля при викупі й при обміні для підтвердження якої-небудь справи: один знімав чобіт свій і давав іншому, [який приймав право родича,] і це було свідченням в Ізраїлі.	And this was in former time the ordinance in Israel for redemption, and for a bargain, to confirm every word: A man loosed his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour that redeemed his right; and this was a testimony in Israel.

І сказав той родич Воозу: купи собі. І зняв чобіт свій [і дав йому].	And the kinsman said to Booz, Buy my right for thyself: and he took off his shoe and gave it to him.
9	9
І сказав Вооз старійшинам і всьому народові: ви тепер свідки того, що я купую в Ноємині все Елимелехове і все Хилеонове і Махлонове;	And Booz said to the elders and to all the people, Ye are this day witnesses, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that belonged to Chelaion and Maalon, of the hand of Noemin.

також і Руф моавитянку, дружину Махлонову, беру собі за дружину, щоб залишити ім’я померлого у наділі його, і щоб не зникло ім’я померлого між братами його й біля воріт місцеперебування його: ви сьогодні свідки того.	Moreover I have bought for myself for a wife Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Maalon, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance; so the name of the dead shall not be destroyed from among his brethren, and from the tribe of his people: ye are this day witnesses.

І сказав увесь народ, що біля воріт, і старійшини: ми свідки; нехай зробить Господь дружиною, ту, яка входить у дім твій, як Рахиль і як Лію, які обидві створили дім Ізраїлів; придбай багатство в Ефрафі, і нехай славиться ім’я твоє у Вифлеємі;	And all the people who were in the gate said, We are witnesses: and the elders said, The Lord make thy wife who goes into thy house, as Rachel and as Lia, who both together built the house of Israel, and wrought mightily in Ephratha, and there shall be a name to thee in Bethleem.
12	12
і нехай буде дім твій, як дім Фареса, якого народила Фамар Іуді, від того сімені, яке дасть тобі Господь від цієї молодої жінки.	And let thy house be as the house of Phares, whom Thamar bore to Juda, of the seed which the Lord shall give thee of this handmaid.
13	13
І взяв Вооз Руф, і вона стала його дружиною. І увійшов він до неї, і Господь дав їй вагітність, і вона народила сина.	And Booz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her; and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.
14	14
І говорили жінки Ноємині: благословенний Господь, що Він не залишив тебе нині без спадкоємця! І нехай буде славне ім’я його в Ізраїлі!	And the women said to Noemin, Blessed is the Lord, who has not suffered a redeemer to fail thee this day, even to make thy name famous in Israel.

Він буде тобі втіхою і годувальником у старості твоїй, тому що його народила невістка твоя, яка любить тебе, яка для тебе краще за сім синів.	And he shall be to thee a restorer of thy soul, and one to cherish thy old age; for thy daughter-in-law which has loved thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, has born him.

І взяла Ноєминь дитя це, і носила його в обіймах своїх, і була йому нянькою.	And Noemin took the child and laid it in her bosom, and became a nurse to it.

Сусідки нарекли йому ім’я і говорили: «у Ноємині народився син», і нарекли йому ім’я: Овид. Він батько Ієссея, батька Давидового.	And the neighbours gave it a name, saying, A son has been born to Noemin; and they called his name Obed; this is the father of Jessæ the father of David.

І ось рід Фаресів: Фарес народив Есрома;	And these are the generations of Phares: Phares begot Esrom:

Есром народив Арама; Арам народив Аминадава;	Esrom begot Aram; and Aram begot Aminadab.

Аминадав народив Наассона; Наассон народив Салмона;	And Aminadab begot Naasson; and Naasson begot Salmon.
