| Слова́ Неємії, сина Ахалиїнового. У місяці Кислеві, у двадцятому році, я перебував у Сузах, престольному місті. | The words of Neemias the son of Chelcia. And it came to pass in the month Chaseleu, of the twentieth year, that I was in Susan the palace. |

| І прийшов Ханані, один із братів моїх, він і кілька людей з Юдеї. І запитав я їх про уцілілих юдеїв, які залишилися від полону, і про Єрусалим. | And Anani, one of my brethren, came, he and some men of Juda; and I asked them concerning those that had escaped, who had been left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. |

| І сказали вони мені: ті, які залишилися від полону, знаходяться там, у країні своїй, у великій біді й у приниженні; і стіна Єрусалима зруйнована, і ворота його спалені вогнем. | And they said to me, The remnant, even those that are left of the captivity, are there in the land, in great distress and reproach: and the walls of Jerusalem are thrown down, and its gates are burnt with fire. |

| Почувши ці слова, я сів і заплакав, і сумний був кілька днів, і постився і молився перед Богом небесним | And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for several days, and continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. |

| і говорив: Господи Боже небес, Боже великий і страшний, що зберігаєш завіт і милість до тих, хто любить Тебе і дотримується заповідей Твоїх! | And I said, Nay, I pray thee, O Lord God of heaven, the mighty, the great and terrible, keeping thy covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to those that keep his commandments: |

| Нехай будуть вуха Твої уважні й очі Твої відкриті, щоб почути молитву раба Твого, якою я тепер день і ніч молюся перед Тобою за синів Ізраїлевих, рабів Твоїх, і сповідуюся в гріхах синів Ізраїлевих, якими згрішили ми перед Тобою, згрішили — і я і дім батька мого. | let now thine ear be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee at this time, this day both day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and make confession for the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and the house of my father have sinned. |

| Ми стали злочинцями перед Тобою і не зберегли заповідей і уставів і постанов, які Ти заповів Мойсеєві, рабу Твоєму. | We have altogether broken covenant with thee, and we have not kept the commandments, and the ordinances, and the judgments, which thou didst command thy servant Moses. |
|

| Але пом’яни слово, яке Ти заповів Мойсеєві, рабу Твоєму, говорячи: якщо ви станете злочинцями, то Я розсію вас по народах; | Remember, I pray thee, the word wherewith thou didst charge thy servant Moses, saying, If ye break covenant with me, I will disperse you among the nations. |

| коли ж навернетеся до Мене і будете зберігати заповіді Мої і виконувати їх, то хоч би ви були вигнані на край неба, і звідти зберу вас і приведу вас на місце, яке обрав Я, щоб поставити там ім’я Моє. | But if ye turn again to me, and keep my commandments, and do them; if ye should be scattered under the utmost bound of heaven, thence will I gather them, and I will bring them into the place which I have chosen to cause my name to dwell there. |

| Вони ж раби Твої і народ Твій, який Ти відкупив силою Твоєю великою і рукою Твоєю могутньою. | Now they are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed with thy great power, and with thy strong hand. |
|

|
| Молю Тебе, Господи! Нехай буде вухо Твоє уважне до молитви раба Твого і до молитви рабів Твоїх, які люблять благоговіти перед ім’ям Твоїм. І благопоспіши рабові Твоєму тепер, і введи його в милість у людини цієї. Я був виночерпієм у царя. | Turn not away, I pray thee, O Lord, but let thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and cause him to find mercy in the sight of this man. Now I was the king's cup-bearer. |

| У місяці Нисані, у двадцятий рік царя Артаксеркса, було перед ним вино. І я взяв вино і подав цареві, і, здавалося, не був сумним перед ним. | And it came to pass in the month Nisan of the twentieth year of king Arthasastha, that the wine was before me: and I took the wine, and gave it to the king: and there was not another before him. |

| Але цар сказав мені: чому обличчя в тебе сумне; ти не хворий, цього нема, а справді сум на серці? Я дуже злякався | And the king said to me, Why is thy countenance sad, and dost thou not control thyself? and now this is nothing but sorrow of heart. Then I was very much alarmed, |

| і сказав цареві: нехай живе цар повіки! Як не бути сумним обличчю моєму, коли місто, дім гробів батьків моїх, у запустінні, і ворота його спалені вогнем! | and I said to the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be said, forasmuch as the city, even the home of the sepulchres of my fathers, has been laid waste, and her gates have been devoured with fire? |

| І сказав мені цар: чого ж ти бажаєш? Я помолився Богу небесному | And the king said to me, For what dost thou ask thus? So I prayed to the God of heaven. |
|

|
| і сказав цареві: якщо царю благоугодно, і якщо у благоволінні раб твій перед лицем твоїм, то пошли мене в Юдею, в місто, де гроби батьків моїх, щоб я відбудував його. | And I said to the king, If it seem good to the king, and if thy servant shall have found favour in thy sight, I ask that thou wouldest send him into Juda, to the city of the sepulchres of my fathers; then will I rebuild it. |

| І сказав мені цар і цариця, яка сиділа поруч з ним: скільки часу триватиме путь твоя, і коли повернешся? І благоугодно було цареві послати мене, після того як я призначив час. | And the king, and his concubine that sat next to him, said to me, For how long will thy journey be, and when wilt thou return? and the proposal was pleasing before the king, and he sent me away, and I appointed him a time. |

| І сказав я царю: якщо царю благоугодно, то дав би мені листи до зарічних областеначальників, щоб вони давали мені перепустку, доки я не дійду до Юдеї, | And I said to the king, If it seem good to the king, let him give me letters to the governors beyond the river, so as to forward me till I come to Juda; |

| і лист до Асафа, охоронця царських лісів, щоб він дав мені дерев для воріт фортеці, яка при домі Божому, і для міської стіни, і для дому, в якому б мені жити. І дав мені цар, тому що благодійна рука Бога мого була наді мною. | and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the garden which belongs to the king, that he may give me timber to cover the gates, and for the wall of the city, and for the house into which I shall enter. And the king gave to me, according as the good hand of God was upon me. |

| І прийшов я до зарічних областеначальників і віддав їм царські листи. Послав же зі мною цар військових начальників з вершниками. | And I came to the governors beyond the river, and I gave them the king's letters. (Now the king had sent with me captains of the army and horsemen.) |
|

|
| Коли почув це Санаваллат, Хоронит і Товія, аммонитський раб, то їм було дуже прикро, що прийшов чоловік піклуватися про благо синів Ізраїлевих. | And Sanaballat the Aronite heard it, and Tobia the servant, the Ammonite, and it was grievous to them that a man was come to seek good for the children of Israel. |

| І прийшов я в Єрусалим. І пробувши там три дні, | So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days. |
|

|
| устав я вночі з небагатьма людьми, які були зі мною, і нікому не сказав, що́ Бог мій поклав мені на серце зробити для Єрусалима; тварини ж не було зі мною ніякої, крім тієї, на якій я їхав. | And I rose up by night, I and a few men with me; and I told no man what God put into my heart to do with Israel; and there was no beast with me, except the beast which I rode upon. |

| І проїхав я вночі через ворота Долини перед джерелом Драконовим до воріт Гнойових, і оглянув я стіни Єрусалима зруйновані і його ворота, спалені вогнем. | And I went forth by the gate of the valley by night, and to the mouth of the well of fig trees, and to the dung-gate: and I mourned over the wall of Jerusalem which they were destroying, and her gates were devoured with fire. |

| І під’їхав я до воріт Джерела і до царської водойми, але там не було місця пройти тварині, яка була піді мною, — | And I passed on to the fountain gate, and to the king's pool; and there was no room for the beast to pass under me. |
|

15
|
| і я піднявся назад по лощовині вночі й оглядав стіну і, проїхавши знову воротами Долини, повернувся. | And I went up by the wall of the brook by night, and mourned over the wall, and passed through the gate of the valley, and returned. |
|

|
16
|
| І начальники не знали, куди я ходив і що я роблю: ні юдеям, ні священикам, ні вельможам, ні начальникам, ні іншим виконавцям робіт я до того нічого не відкривав. | And the sentinels knew not why I went, nor what I was doing; and until that time I told it not to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the captains, or to the rest of the men who wrought the works. |

| І сказав я їм: ви бачите біду, в якій ми знаходимося; Єрусалим спустошений і ворота його спалені вогнем; ходімо, побудуємо стіну Єрусалима, і не будемо надалі в такому приниженні. | Then I said to them, Ye see this evil, in which we are, how Jerusalem is desolate, and her gates have been set on fire: come, and let us build throughout the wall of Jerusalem, and we shall be no longer a reproach. |

| І я розповів їм про руку Бога мого, що благодіє мені, а також і слова царя, які він говорив мені. І сказали вони: будемо будувати, — й укріпили руки свої на благу справу. | And I told them of the hand of God which was good upon me, also about the words of the king which he spoke to me: and I said, Let us arise and build. And their hands were strengthened for the good work. |

| Почувши це, Санаваллат, Хоронит і Товія, аммонитський раб, і Гешем аравитянин глузували з нас і з презирством говорили: що це за справа, яку ви робите? чи не думаєте вже повстати проти царя? | And Sanaballat the Aronite, and Tobia the servant, the Ammonite, and Gesam the Arabian, heard it, and they laughed us to scorn, and came to us, and said, What is this thing that ye are doing? are ye revolting against the king? |

| Я дав їм відповідь і сказав їм: Бог Небесний, Він благопоспішить нам, і ми, раби Його, станемо будувати, а вам немає частки і права і пам’яті в Єрусалимі. | And I answered them, and said to them, The God of heaven, he shall prosper us, and we his servants are pure, and we will build: but ye have no part, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem. |

| І встав Елияшив, великий священик, і брати його священики і побудували Овечі ворота: вони освятили їх і вставили двері їх, і від вежі Меа освятили їх до вежі Хананела. | Then Eliasub the high priest, and his brethren the priests, rose up, and built the sheep-gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even to the tower of the hundred they sanctified it, to the tower of Anameel. |

| І біля нього будували єрихонці, а біля них будував Закхур, син Імрія. | And they builded by the side of the men of Jericho, and by the side of the sons of Zacchur, the son of Amari. |

|
| Ворота Рибні будували уродженці Сенаї: вони покрили їх, і вставили двері їх, замки їх і засуви їх. | And the sons of Asana built the fish-gate; they roofed it, and covered in its doors, and bolts, and bars. |
|

|
| Біля них лагодив стіну Меремоф, син Урії, син Гаккоца; біля них лагодив Мешуллам, син Берехії, син Мешизабела; біля них лагодив Садок, син Баани; | And next to them the order reached to Ramoth the son of Uria, the son of Accos, and next to them Mosollam son of Barachias the son of Mazebel took his place: and next to them Sadoc the son of Baana took his place. |

| біля них лагодили фекойці; втім, найзнатніші з них не нахилили шиї своєї попрацювати для Господа свого. | And next to them the Thecoim took their place; but the Adorim applied not their neck to their service. |
|

| Старі ворота лагодили Іоіада, син Пасеаха, і Мешуллам, син Бесодії: вони покрили їх і вставили двері їх, і замки їх і засуви їх. | And Joida the son of Phasec, and Mesulam son of Basodia, repaired the old gate; they covered it in, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars. |

| Біля них лагодив Мелатія гаваонитянин, та Іадон з Меронофа, з жителями Гаваона і Мицфи, підвладними зарічному областеначальнику. | And next to them repaired Maltias the Gabaonite, and Evaron the Meronothite, the men of Gabaon and Maspha, to the throne of the governor on this side the river. |

| Поруч з ним лагодив Уззиїл, син Харгаії, срібляр, а біля нього лагодив Хананія, син Гараккахима. І відновили Єрусалим до стіни широкої. | And next to him Oziel the son of Arachias of the smiths, carried on the repairs: and next to them Ananias the son of one of the apothecaries repaired, and they finished Jerusalem to the broad wall. |

| Поруч з ними лагодив Рефаія, син Хура, начальник половини округу Єрусалимського. | And next to them repaired Raphaea the son of Sur, the ruler of half the district round about Jerusalem. |

| Біля них і навпроти дому свого лагодив Ієдаія, син Харумафа, а поруч з ним лагодив Хаттуш, син Хашавнії. | And next to them repaired Jedaia the son of Eromaph, and that in front of his house: and next to him repaired Attuth son of Asabania. |
|

|
| На другій ділянці лагодив Малхія, син Харима, і Хашшув, син Пахаф-Моава; вони ж лагодили і вежу Пічну. | And next to him repaired Melchias son of Heram, and Asub son of Phaat Moab, even to the tower of the furnaces. |
|

|
| Поруч з ними лагодив Шаллум, син Галлохеша, начальник половини округу Єрусалимського, він і дочки його. | And next to him repaired Sallum the son of Alloes, the ruler of half the district round about Jerusalem, he and his daughters. |
|

|
| Ворота Долини лагодив Ханун і жителі Заноаха: вони побудували їх, і вставили двері їх, замки їх і засуви їх, і ще лагодили вони тисячу ліктів стіни до воріт Гнойових. | Anun and the inhabitants of Zano repaired the gate of the valley: they built it, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars, and a thousand cubits of the wall as far as the dung-gate. |

| А ворота Гнойові лагодив Малхія, син Рехава, начальник Бефкаремського округу: він побудував їх і вставив двері їх, замки їх і засуви їх. | And Melchia the son of Rechab, the ruler of the district round about Beth-accharim, repaired the dung-gate, he and his sons; and they covered it, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars. |

| Ворота Джерела лагодив Шаллум, син Колхозея, начальник округу Мицфи: він побудував їх, і покрив їх, і вставив двері їх, замки їх і засуви їх, — він же лагодив стіну біля водоймища Селах навпроти царського саду і до сходинок, що спускаються від міста Давидового. | But Solomon the son of Choleze repaired the gate of the fountain, the ruler of part of Maspha; he built it, and covered it, and set up its doors and its bars, and the wall of the pool of the skins by the meadow of the king, and as far as the steps that lead down from the city of David. |

| За ним лагодив Неємія, син Азбука, начальник половини округу Бефцурського, до гробниць Давидових і до викопаного ставка і до дому хоробрих. | After him repaired Neemias son of Azabuch, ruler of half the district round about Bethsur, as far as the garden of David's sepulchre, and as far as the artificial pool, and as far as the house of the mighty men. |

| За ним лагодили левити: Рехум, син Ванія; біля нього лагодив Хашавія, начальник половини округу Кеїльського, за свій округ. | After him repaired the Levites, even Raum the son of Bani: next to him repaired Asabia, ruler of half the district round about Keila, in his district. |
|

|
| За ним лагодили брати їхні: Баввай, син Хенадада, начальник Кеїльського напівокругу. | And after him repaired his brethren, Benei son of Enadad, ruler of half the district round about Keila. |
|

|
| А біля нього лагодив Езер, син Ісуса, начальник Мицфи, на другій ділянці, навпроти виходу до зброярні на розі. | And next to him repaired Azur the son of Joshua, ruler of Masphai, another portion of the tower of ascent, where it meets the corner. |
|

|
| За ним ревно лагодив Варух, син Забвая, на другій ділянці, від рогу до дверей дому Елияшивового, великого священика. | After him repaired Baruch the son of Zabu, a second portion, from the corner as far as the door of the house of Eliasub the high priest. |
|

| За ним лагодив Меремоф, син Урії, син Гаккоца, на другій ділянці, від дверей дому Елияшивового до кінця дому Елияшивового. | After him repaired Meramoth the son of Uria the son of Accos, a second part from the door of the house of Eliasub, to the end of the house of Eliasub. |

| За ним лагодили священики з околиць. | And after him repaired the priests, the men of Ecchechar. |

| За ними лагодив Веніамін і Хашшув, навпроти дому свого; за ними лагодив Азарія, син Маасеї, син Ананії, біля дому свого. | And after him repaired Benjamin and Asub over against their house: and after him repaired Azarias son of Maasias the son of Ananias, the parts near to his house. |

| За ним лагодив Биннуй, син Хенадада, на другій ділянці, від дому Азарії до рогу і повороту. | After him repaired Bani the son of Adad, another portion from the house of Azaria as far as the corner and to the turning, |

| За ним Фалал, син Узая, навпроти рогу і вежі, що виступає від верхнього дому царського, яка біля двору в’язничного. За ним Федаія, син Пароша. | of Phalach the son of Uzai, opposite the corner, and where is also the tower that projects from the king's house, even the upper one of the prison-house: and after him repaired Phadaea the son of Phoros. |

| Нефинеї ж, які жили в Офелі, полагодили навпроти Водяних воріт на схід і до вежі, що виступає. | And the Nathinim dwelt in Ophal, as far as the garden of the water-gate eastward, and there is the projecting tower. |

| За ними лагодили фекойці, на другій ділянці, від місця навпроти великої вежі, що виступає до стіни Офела. | And after them the Thecoim repaired, another portion opposite the great projecting tower, even as far as the wall of Ophla. |
|

| Далі за воротами Кінськими лагодили священики, кожен навпроти свого дому. | The priests repaired above the horse-gate, every man over against his own house. |
|

| За ними лагодив Садок, син Іммера, навпроти свого дому, а за ним лагодив Шемаія, син Шеханії, сторож східних воріт. | And after him Sadduc the son of Emmer repaired opposite his own house: and after him repaired Samaea son of Sechenia, guard of the east-gate. |

|
| За ним лагодив Хананія, син Шелемії, і Ханун, шостий син Цалафа, на другій ділянці. За ним лагодив Мешуллам, син Берехії, навпроти кімнати своєї. | After him repaired Anania son of Selemia, and Anom, the sixth son of Seleph, another portion: after him Mesulam the son of Barachia repaired over against his treasury. |

| За ним лагодив Малхія, син Гацорфія, до дому нефинеїв і торговців, навпроти воріт Гаммифкад і до кутового житла. | After him repaired Melchia the son of Sarephi as far as the house of the Nathinim, and the chapmen over against the gate of Maphecad, and as far as the steps of the corner. |

| А між кутовим житлом до воріт Овечих лагодили сріблярі і торговці. | And between that and the sheep-gate the smiths and chapmen repaired. |

Chapter 4

| Коли почув Санаваллат, що ми будуємо стіну, він розсердився і багато досадував і знущався з юдеїв; | Now it came to pass, when Sanaballat heard that we were building the wall, that it was grievous to him, and he was very angry, and railed against the Jews. |
|

|
| і говорив при братах своїх і при самарійських військових людях, і сказав: що роблять ці жалюгідні юдеї? невже їм це дозволять? невже будуть вони приносити жертви? невже вони коли-небудь закінчать? невже вони оживлять камені з куп пороху, і притому попалені? | And he said before his brethren (that is the army of the Samaritans) Is it true that these Jews are building their city? do they indeed offer sacrifices? will they prevail? and will they this day restore the stones, after they have been burnt and made a heap of rubbish? |

| А Товія аммонитянин, який був поруч з ним, сказав: нехай будують їх; піде лисиця, і зруйнує їхню кам’яну стіну. | And Tobias the Ammanite came near to him, and said to them, Do they sacrifice or eat in their place? shall not a fox go up and pull down their wall of stones? |

| Почуй, Боже наш, у якій ми зневазі, і оберни ганьбу їх на їхню голову, і віддай їх на презирство в землі полону; | Hear, O our God, for we have become a scorn; and return thou their reproach upon their head, and make them a scorn in a land of captivity, |

|
| і не покривай беззаконня їх, і гріх їх нехай не згладиться перед лицем Твоїм, тому що вони засмутили тих, що будують! | and do not cover their iniquity. |
|

|
|
| Ми однак же будували стіну, і складена була вся стіна до половини її. І в народу вистачало ретельности працювати. | |
|

|
7
|
| Коли почув Санаваллат і Товія, й аравитяни, й аммонитяни, і азотяни, що стіни Єрусалимські відновлюються, що пошкодження почали лагодитися, то їм стало дуже прикро. | But it came to pass, when Sanaballat and Tobia, and the Arabians, and the Ammanites, heard that the building of the walls of Jerusalem was advancing, and that the breaches began to be stopped, that it appeared very grievous to them. |

|
| І змовилися всі разом піти війною на Єрусалим і зруйнувати його. | And all of them assembled together, to come to fight against Jerusalem, and to destroy it utterly. |
|

|
| І ми молилися Богу нашому, і ставили проти них варту вдень і вночі, для порятунку від них. | So we prayed to our God and set watchmen against them day and night, because of them. |
|
10
|
10
|
| Але юдеї сказали: ослабла сила в носіїв, а сміття багато; ми не в змозі будувати стіну. | And Juda said, The strength of the enemies is broken, yet there is much rubbish, and we shall not be able to build the wall. |
|

|
11
|
| А вороги наші говорили: не дізнаються і не побачать, як раптом ми ввійдемо в середину їх і переб’ємо їх, і зупинимо справу. | And they that afflicted us said, They shall not know, and they shall not see, until we come into the midst of them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease. |
|

|
| Коли приходили юдеї, які жили поряд з ними, і говорили нам разів десять, з усіх місць, що вони нападуть на нас, | And it came to pass, when the Jews who lived near them came, that they said to us, They are coming up against us from every quarter. |
|

|
13
|
| тоді в низинних місцях біля міста, за стіною, на місцях сухих поставив я народ за племенами з мечами їхніми, зі списами їхніми і луками їхніми. | So I set men in the lowest part of the place behind the wall in the lurking-places, I even set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. |

| І оглянув я, і став, і сказав найзнатнішим і начальникам і решті народу: не бійтеся їх; пом’ятайте Господа великого і страшного і воюйте за братів своїх, за синів своїх і за дочок своїх, за дружин своїх і за доми свої. | And I looked, and arose, and said to the nobles, and to the captains, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember our great and terrible God, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses. |

| Коли почули вороги наші, що нам відомий намір їхній, тоді зруйнував Бог задум їхній, і всі ми повернулися до стіни, кожен на свою роботу. | And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was made known to us, and God had frustrated their counsel, that we all returned to the wall, every man to his work. |

| З того дня половина молодих людей у мене займалася роботою, а інша половина їх тримала списи, щити і луки і лати; і начальники знаходилися позаду всього дому Іудиного. | And it came to pass from that day that half of them that had been driven forth, wrought the work, and half of them kept guard; and there were spears, and shields, and bows, and breast-plates, and rulers behind the whole house of Juda, |

| тому звідки ви почуєте звук труби, в те місце збирайтеся до нас: Бог наш буде воювати за нас. | In whatsoever place ye shall hear the sound of the cornet, thither gather yourselves together to us; and our God shall fight for us. |

| Так виконували ми роботу; і половина тримала списи від сходу зорі до появи зірок. | So we continued labouring at the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning until the stars appeared. |

| Крім цього, у той же час я сказав народу, щоб в Єрусалимі ночували всі з рабами своїми, — і будуть вони у нас вночі на варті, а вдень на роботі. | And at that time I said to the people, Lodge ye every man with his servant in the midst of Jerusalem, and let the night be a watch-time to you, and the day a work-time. |

| Були такі, які говорили: нас, синів наших і дочок наших багато; і ми бажали б діставати хліб і годуватися і жити. | And some said, We are numerous with our sons and our daughters; so we will take corn, and eat, and live. |
|

| Були і такі, які говорили: поля свої, і виноградники свої, і доми свої ми закладаємо, щоб дістати хліба від голоду. | And some said, As to our fields and vineyards and houses, let us pledge them, and we will take corn, and eat. |
|

| Були і такі, які говорили: ми позичаємо срібло на подать царю під заставу полів наших і виноградників наших; | And some said, We have borrowed money for the king's tributes:—our fields, and our vineyards, and houses are pledged. |
|

| у нас такі самі тіла, як тіла у братів наших, і сини наші такі самі, як їхні сини; а ось, ми повинні віддавати синів наших і дочок наших у раби, і деякі з дочок наших уже знаходяться в поневоленні. Немає ніяких засобів для викупу в руках наших; і поля наші і виноградники наші в інших. | And now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children are as their children: yet, behold, we are reducing our sons and our daughters to slavery, and some of our daughters are enslaved: and there is no power of our hands, for our fields and our vineyards belong to the nobles. |

Вони мовчали і не знаходили відповіді. | and I said to them, We of our free-will have redeemed our brethren the Jews that were sold to the Gentiles; and do ye sell your brethren? and shall they be delivered to us? And they were silent, and found no answer. |

| І сказав я: недобре ви робите. Чи не в страху Бога нашого повинні ходити ви, щоб уникнути ганьблення від народів, ворогів наших? | And I said, The thing which ye do is not good; ye will not so walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the Gentiles our enemies. |

| І я також, брати мої і ті, що служили при мені, давали їм у борг і срібло і хліб: залишимо їм борг цей. | Both my brethren, and my acquaintances, and I, have lent them money and corn: let us now leave off this exaction. |

| Поверніть їм нині ж поля їхні, виноградні й оливні сади їхні, і доми їхні, і ріст, за який зі срібла і хліба, і вина й олії, за який ви позичили їм. | Restore to them, I pray, as at this day, their fields, and their vineyards, and their olive-yards, and their houses, and bring forth to them corn and wine and oil of the money. |

| І сказали вони: повернемо і не будемо з них вимагати; зробимо так, як ти говориш. І покликав я священиків і звелів їм дати клятву, що вони так зроблять. | And they said, We will restore, and we will not exact of them; we will do thus as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and bound them by oath to do according to this word. |

| І витрусив я одяг мій і сказав: так нехай витрусить Бог усяку людину, що не стримає слова цього, з дому його і з маєтку його, і так нехай буде в нього витрясено і порожньо! І сказало все зібрання: амінь. І прославили Бога; і народ виконав слово це. | And I shook out my garment, and said, So may God shake out every man who shall not keep to this word, from his house, and from his labours, he shall be even thus shaken out, as an outcast and empty. And all the congregation said, Amen, and they praised the Lord: and the people did this thing. |

| Ще: з того дня, як визначений я був областеначальником їхнім у землі Юдейській, від двадцятого року до тридцять другого року царя Артаксеркса, протягом дванадцяти років я і брати мої не їли хліба областеначальників. | From the day that he charged me to be their ruler in the land of Juda, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Arthasastha, twelve years, I and my brethren ate not provision extorted from them. |

| А попередні областеначальники, що були до мене, обтяжували народ і брали з нього хліб і вино, крім сорока сиклів срібла; навіть і слуги їхні панували над народом. Я ж не робив так зі страху Божого. | But as for the former acts of extortion wherein those who were before me oppressed them, they even took of them their last money, forty didrachms for bread and wine; and the very outcasts of them exercised authority over the people: but I did not so, because of the fear of God. |

| При цьому роботи на стіні цій я підтримував; і полів ми не закуповували, й усі слуги мої збиралися туди на роботу. | Also in the work of the wall I treated them not with rigor, I bought not land: and all that were gathered together came thither to the work. |

| Юдеїв і начальників по сто п’ятдесят людей бувало за столом у мене, крім тих, хто приходив до нас з навколишніх народів. | And the Jews, to the number of a hundred and fifty men, besides those coming to us from the nations round about, were at my table. |
|

|
| І ось що бувало приготоване на один день: один бик, шість добірних овець і птахи готувалися у мене; і за десять днів витрачалося безліч усякого вина. І, попри все те, хліба областеначальничого я не вимагав, тому що важка служба лежала на народі цьому. | And there came to me for one day one calf, and I had six choice sheep and a goat; and every ten days wine in abundance of all sorts: yet with these I required not the bread of extortion, because the bondage was heavy upon this people. |

| Пом’яни, Боже мій, на благо мені усе, що я зробив для народу цього! | Remember me, O God, for good, in all that I have done to this people. |

| Коли дійшло до вух Санаваллата і Товії і Гешема аравитянина й інших ворогів наших, що я відбудував стіну, і не залишалося в ній пошкоджень — втім, до того часу я ще не ставив дверей у ворота, — | Now it came to pass, when Sanaballat, and Tobias, and Gesam the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no opening left therein; (but hitherto I had not set up the doors on the gates;) |

| тоді прислали Санаваллат і Гешем до мене сказати: прийди, і зійдемося в одному із сіл на рівнині Оно. Вони замишляли зробити мені зло. | that Sanaballat and Gesam sent to me, saying, Come and let us meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono. But they were plotting to do me mischief. |

| Але я послав до них послів сказати: я зайнятий великою справою, не можу зійти; справа зупинилася б, якби я залишив її і зійшов до вас. | So I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, and I shall not be able to come down, lest the work should cease: as soon as I shall have finished it, I will come down to you. |

| Чотири рази присилали вони до мене з таким самим запрошенням, і я відповідав їм те саме. | And they sent to me again to this effect; and I sent them word accordingly. |

| Тоді прислав до мене Санаваллат у п’ятий раз свого слугу, в якого в руці був відкритий лист. | Then Sanaballat sent his servant to me with an open letter in his hand. |
|

| У ньому було написано: чутка носиться в народах, і Гешем говорить, начебто ти і юдеї задумали відпасти, для чого і будуєш стіну і хочеш бути в них царем, за тими ж чутками; | And in it was written, It has been reported among the Gentiles that thou and the Jews are planning to revolt: therefore thou art building the wall, and thou wilt be a king to them. |

| і пророків поставив ти, щоб вони розголошували про тебе в Єрусалимі і говорили: цар Юдейський! І такі розмови дійдуть до царя. Отже, приходь, і порадимося разом. | And moreover thou has appointed prophets to thyself, that thou mightest dwell in Jerusalem as a king over Juda: and now these words will be reported to the king. Now then, come, let us take counsel together. |

| Але я послав до нього сказати: нічого такого не було, про що ти говориш; ти вигадав це своїм розумом. | And I sent to him, saying, It has not happened according to these words, even as thou sayest, for thou framest them falsely out of thy heart. |
|

| Бо всі вони залякували нас, думаючи: опустяться руки їхні від цієї справи, і вона не відбудеться; але я тим більше зміцнив руки мої. | For all were trying to alarm us, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from this work, and it shall not be done. Now therefore I have strengthened my hands. |

| Прийшов я в дім Шемаії, сина Делаії, сина Мегетавелового, і він замкнувся і сказав: ходімо в дім Божий, всередину храму, і замкнемо за собою двері храму, тому що прийдуть убити тебе, і прийдуть убити тебе вночі. | And I came into the house of Semei the son of Dalaia the Son of Metabeel, and he was shut up; and he said, Let us assemble together in the house of God, in the midst of it, and let us shut the doors of it; for they are coming by night to slay thee. |

| Але я сказав: чи може втікати така людина, як я? Чи може такий, як я, увійти в храм, щоб залишитися живим? Не піду. | And I said, Who is the man that shall enter into the house, that he may live? |

| Я знав, що не Бог послав його, хоча він пророче говорив мені, але що Товія і Санаваллат підкупили його. | And I observed, and, behold, God had not sent him, for the prophecy was a fable devised against me: |
|

| Для того він був підкуплений, щоб я злякався і зробив так і згрішив, і щоб мали про мене недобру думку і переслідували мене за це докорами. | and Tobias and Sanaballat had hired against me a multitude, that I might be frightened, and do this, and sin, and become to them an ill name, that they might reproach me. |
|

| Пом’яни, Боже мій, Товію і Санаваллата за цими справами їхніми, а також пророчицю Ноадію й інших пророків, які хотіли залякати мене! | Remember, O God, Tobias and Sanaballat, according to these their deeds, and the prophetess Noadia, and the rest of the prophets who tried to alarm me. |

| Стіна була зроблена у двадцять п’ятий день місяця Елула, за п’ятдесят два дні. | So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. |

| Коли почули про це всі вороги наші, і побачили це всі народи, які навколо нас, тоді вони дуже впали в очах своїх і пізнали, що це діло зроблено Богом нашим. | And it came to pass, when all our enemies heard of it, that all the nations round about us feared, and great alarm fell upon them, and they knew that it was of our God that this work should be finished. |

| Зверх того в ті дні найзнатніші юдеї багато писали листів, які посилалися до Товії, а Товіїні листи приходили до них. | And in those days letters came to Tobias from many nobles of Juda, and those of Tobias came to them. |

| Тому що багато хто в Юдеї був у клятвеному союзі з ним, бо він був зятем Шеханії, сина Арахового, а син його Іоханан узяв за себе дочку Мешуллама, сина Верехії. | For many in Juda were bound to him by oath, because he was son-in-law of Sechenias the son of Herae; and Jonan his son had taken the daughter of Mesulam the son of Barachia to wife. |

| Навіть про доброту його вони говорили при мені, і мої слова переносилися до нього. Товія надсилав листи, щоб залякати мене. | And they reported his words to me, and carried out my words to him: and Tobias sent letters to terrify me. |

| Коли стіна була побудована, і я вставив двері, і поставлені були на своє служіння воротарі і співці і левити, | And it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed, |

| тоді наказав я братові моєму Ханані і начальникові єрусалимської фортеці Хананію, бо він більше за багатьох інших був людиною вірною і богобоязкою, | that I gave charge to Ananias my brother, and Ananias the ruler of the palace, over Jerusalem: for he was a true man, and one that feared God beyond many. |

| і сказав я їм: нехай не відчиняють воріт єрусалимських, доки не обігріє сонце, і доки вони стоять, нехай зачиняють і замикають двері. І поставив я сторожами жителів Єрусалима, кожного на свою варту і кожного навпроти дому його. | And I said to them, The gates of Jerusalem shall not be opened till sunrise; and while they are still watching, let the doors be shut, and bolted; and set watches of them that dwell in Jerusalem, every man at his post, and every man over against his house. |

| Але місто було просторе і велике, а народу в ньому було небагато, і доми не були побудовані. | Now the city was wide and large; and the people were few in it, and the houses were not built. |

І знайшов я родовідний перепис тих, які прийшли спочатку, і в ньому написано: | And God put it into my heart, and I gathered the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, into companies: and I found a register of the company that came up first, and I found written in it as follows: |

| ось жителі країни, які вирушили, із полонених, переселених Навуходоносором, царем Вавилонським, і повернулися в Єрусалим і Юдею, кожен у своє місто, — | Now these are the children of the country, that came up from captivity, of the number which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon carried away, and they returned to Jerusalem and to Juda, every man to his city; |

| І приніс священик Ездра закон перед зібрання чоловіків і жінок, і всіх, які могли розуміти, у перший день сьомого місяця; | So Esdras the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and every one who had understanding was present to hearken, on the first day of the seventh month. |

| і читав з нього на площі, яка перед Водяними воротами, від світанку до полудня, перед чоловіками і жінками і всіма, які могли розуміти; і вуха всього народу були прихилені до книги закону. | And he read in it from the time of sun-rise to the middle of the day, before the men and the women; and they understood it, and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. |

| Книжник Ездра стояв на дерев’яному підвищенні, яке для цього зробили, а поруч з ним, праворуч від нього, стояли Маттифія і Шема, й Анаія й Урія, і Хелкія і Маасея, а ліворуч від нього Федаія і Мисаїл, і Малхія і Хашум, і Хашбаддана, і Захарія і Мешуллам. | And Esdras the scribe stood on a wooden stage, and there stood next to him Mattathias, and Samaeas, and Ananias, and Urias, and Chelcia, and Massia, on his right hand; and on his left Phadaeas, and Misael, and Melchias, and Asom, and Asabadma, and Zacharias, and Mesollam. |

| І відкрив Ездра книгу перед очима всього народу, тому що він стояв вище за весь народ. І коли він відкрив її, весь народ встав. | And Esdras opened the book before all the people, for he was above the people; and it came to pass when he had opened it, that all the people stood. |

| І благословив Ездра Господа Бога великого. | Тоді Неємія, він же Тиршафа, і книжник Ездра, священик, і левити, які учили народ, сказали всьому народові: день цей святий Господу Богу вашому; не засмучуйтеся і не плачте, тому що весь народ плакав, слухаючи слова закону. | And Neemias, and Esdras the priest and scribe, and the Levites, and they that instructed the people, spoke and said to all the people, It is a holy day to the Lord our God; do not mourn, nor weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. |

| І сказав їм: підіть, їжте жирне і пийте солодке, і посилайте частки тим, у кого нічого не приготовано, тому що день цей святий Господу нашому. І не засмучуйтеся, тому що радість перед Господом — підкріплення для вас. | And the governor said to them, Go, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions to them that have nothing; for the day is holy to our Lord: and faint not, for the Lord is our strength. |

| І левити заспокоювали весь народ, говорячи: припиніть, тому що день цей святий, не засмучуйтеся. | And the Levites caused all the people to be silent, saying, Be silent, for it is a holy day, and despond not. |

| І пішов увесь народ їсти, і пити, і посилати частки, і святкувати з великою радістю, тому що зрозуміли слова, які сказали їм. | So all the people departed to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, for they understood the words which he made known to them. |
|

|
| На другий день зібралися глави поколінь від усього народу, священики і левити до книжника Ездри, щоб він пояснював їм слова закону. | And on the second day the heads of families assembled with all the people, also the priests and Levites, to Esdras the scribe, to attend to all the words of the law. |
|

| І знайшли написане в законі, який Господь дав через Мойсея, щоб сини Ізраїлеві в сьомому місяці, у свято, жили в кущах. | And they found written in the law which the Lord commanded Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths, in the feast in the seventh month: |

Радість була дуже велика. | And all the congregation who had returned from the captivity, made booths, and dwelt in booths: for the children of Israel had not done so from the days of Jesus the son of Naue until that day: and there was great joy. |

| У двадцять четвертий день цього місяця зібралися всі сини Ізраїлеві, постячись і у веретищі і з попелом на головах своїх. | Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel assembled with fasting, and in sackcloths, and with ashes on their head. |

|
| І відокремилося сім’я Ізраїлеве від усіх інородців, і встали і сповідувалися у гріхах своїх і в злочинах батьків своїх. | And the children of Israel separated themselves from every stranger, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. |
|

|
| І стояли на своєму місці, і чверть дня читали з книги закону Господа Бога свого, і чверть сповідувалися і поклонялися Господу Богу своєму. | And they stood in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their god: and they confessed their sins to the Lord, and worshipped the Lord their God. |
|

|
| І стали на підвищене місце левити: Ісус, Ванія, Кадмиїл, Шеванія, Вунній, Шеревія, Ванія, Хенані, і голосно взивали до Господа Бога свого. | And there stood upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jesus, and the sons of Cadmiel, Sechenia the son of Sarabia, sons of Choneni; and they cried with a loud voice to the Lord their God. |

| І сказали левити — Ісус, Кадмиїл, Ванія, Хашавнія, Шеревія, Годія, Шеванія, Петахія: встаньте, славте Господа Бога вашого, від віку і до віку. Нехай славословлять достославне і превище за всяке славослів’я і хвалу ім’я Твоє! | And the Levites, Jesus and Cadmiel, said, Rise up, bless the Lord our God forever and ever: and let them bless thy glorious name, and exalt it with all blessing and praise. |

| [І сказав Ездра:] Ти, Господи, єдиний, Ти створив небо, небеса небес і все воїнство їх, землю і все, що на ній, моря й усе, що в них, і Ти живиш усе це, і небесні воїнства Тобі поклоняються. | And Esdras said, Thou art the only true Lord; thou madest the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, and all their array, the earth, and all things that are in it, the seas, and all things in them; and thou quickenest all things, and the hosts of heaven worship thee. |

| Ти Сам, Господи Боже, обрав Аврама, і вивів його з Ура халдейського, і дав йому ім’я Авраама, | Thou art the Lord God, thou didst choose Abram, and broughtest him out of the land of the Chaldeans, and gavest him the name of Abraam: |

| і знайшов серце його вірним перед Тобою, й уклав з ним завіт, щоб дати [йому і] сімені його землю хананеїв, хеттеїв, аморреїв, ферезеїв, ієвусеїв і гергесеїв. І Ти виконав слово Своє, тому що Ти праведний. | and thou foundest his heart faithful before thee, and didst make a covenant with him to give to him and to his seed the land of the Chananites, and the Chettites, and Amorites, and Pherezites, and Jebusites, and Gergesites; and thou hast confirmed thy words, for thou art righteous. |

| Ти побачив біду батьків наших в Єгипті і почув волання їх біля Червоного моря, | And thou sawest the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and thou heardest their cry at the Red Sea. |

|
| і явив знамення і чудеса над фараоном і над усіма рабами його, і над усім народом землі його, тому що Ти знав, що вони гордовито поводилися з ними, і зробив Ти Собі ім’я до сьогодні. | And thou shewedst signs and wonders in Egypt, on Pharao and all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knowest that they behaved insolently against them: and thou madest thyself a name, as at this day. |

| У стовпі хмарному Ти вів їх вдень і в стовпі вогненному — вночі, щоб освітлювати їм шлях, яким вони йшли. | And thou guidedst them by day by a pillar of cloud, and by night by a pillar of fire, to enlighten for them the way wherein they should walk. |

|
| І зійшов Ти на гору Синай і говорив з ними з неба, і дав їм суди справедливі, закони вірні, устави і заповіді добрі. | Also thou camest down upon mount Sina, and thou spakest to them out of heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and laws of truth, ordinances, and good commandments. |

| І вказав їм святу Твою суботу і заповіді, й устави і закон дав їм через раба Твого Мойсея. | And thou didst make known to them thy holy sabbath; thou didst enjoin upon them commandments, and ordinances, and a law, by the hand of thy servant Moses. |

|
| І хліб з неба Ти давав їм у голоді їх, і воду з каменю виточував їм у спразі їх, і сказав їм, щоб вони пішли й оволоділи землею, яку Ти, піднявши руку Твою, клявся дати їм. | And thou gavest them bread from heaven for their food, and thou broughtest them forth water from a rock for their thirst; and thou badest them go in to inherit the land over which thou stretchedst out thy hand to give it them. |

| не захотіли підкорюватися і не згадали дивних діл Твоїх, які Ти чинив з ними, і тримали шию свою пружно, і, з упертости своєї, поставили над собою вождя, щоб повернутися в рабство своє. Але Ти Бог, що любиш прощати, благий і милосердий, довготерпеливий і многомилостивий, і Ти не залишив їх. | and refused to listen, and remembered not thy wonders which thou wroughtest with them; and they hardened their neck, and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt: but thou, O God, art merciful and compassionate, long-suffering, and abundant in mercy, and thou didst not forsake them. |

| І хоча вони зробили собі відлитого тельця, і сказали: ось бог твій, який вивів тебе з Єгипту, і хоча робили великі обра́зи, | And still farther they even made to themselves a molten calf, and said, These are the gods that brought us up out of Egypt: and they wrought great provocations. |

| але Ти, з великого милосердя Твого, не залишав їх у пустелі; стовп хмарний не відходив від них удень, щоб вести їх по шляху, і стовп вогненний — уночі, щоб світити їм на шляху, яким вони йшли. | Yet thou in thy great compassions didst not forsake them in the wilderness: thou didst not turn away from them the pillar of the cloud by day, to guide them in the way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to enlighten for them the way wherein they should walk. |

| І Ти дав їм Духа Твого благого, щоб наставляти їх, і манну Твою не віднімав від вуст їх, і воду давав їм для утамування спраги їх. | And thou gavest thy good Spirit to instruct them, and thou didst not withhold thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water in their thirst. |

| І Ти дав їм царства і народи і розділив їм, і вони оволоділи землею Сигона, і землею царя Есевонського, і землею Ога, царя Васанського. | Moreover, thou gavest them kingdoms, and didst divide nations to them: and they inherited the land of Seon king of Esebon, and the land of Og king of Basan. |

| І синів їхніх Ти розмножив, як зірки небесні, і ввів їх у землю, про яку Ти говорив батькам їхнім, що вони прийдуть володіти нею. | And thou didst multiply their children as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land of which thou spokest to their fathers; |

| І ввійшли сини їхні, й оволоділи землею. І Ти підкорив їм жителів землі, хананеїв, і віддав їх у руки їхні, і царів їх, і народи землі, щоб вони чинили з ними за своєю волею. | And they inherited it: and thou didst destroy from before them the dwellers in the land of the Chananites, and thou gavest into their hands them and their kings, and the nations of the land, to do unto them as it pleased them. |

| І зайняли вони укріплені міста і плодючу землю, і узяли у володіння доми, наповнені всяким добром, водойми, висічені з каменю, виноградні й оливкові сади і безліч дерев із плодами для їжі. Вони їли, насичувалися, повнішали і насолоджувалися з великої благости Твоєї; | And they took lofty cities, and inherited houses full of all good things, wells dug, vineyards, and oliveyards, and every fruit tree in abundance: so they ate, and were filled, and grew fat, and rioted in thy great goodness. |

| і зробилися впертими й обурилися проти Тебе, і знехтували закон Твій, убивали пророків Твоїх, які умовляли їх навернутися до Тебе, і робили великі обра́зи. | But they turned, and revolted from thee, and cast thy law behind their backs; and they slew thy prophets, who testified against them to turn them back to thee, and they wrought great provocations. |

| І Ти віддав їх у руки ворогів їхніх, які пригнічували їх. Але коли, у скрутний для них час, вони волали до Тебе, Ти вислуховував їх з небес і, з великого милосердя Твого, давав їм спасителів, і вони рятували їх від рук ворогів їхніх. | Then thou gavest them into the hand of them that afflicted them, and they did afflict them: and they cried to thee in the time of their affliction, and thou didst hear them from thy heaven, and in thy great compassions gavest them deliverers, and didst save them from the hand of them that afflicted them. |

| Коли ж заспокоювалися, то знову починали робити лихе перед лицем Твоїм, і Ти віддавав їх у руки ворогів їхніх, і вони панували над ними. Але коли вони знову волали до Тебе, Ти вислуховував їх з небес, з великого милосердя Твого, визволяв їх багаторазово. | But when they rested, they did evil again before thee: so thou leftest them in the hands of their enemies, and they ruled over them: and they cried again to thee, and thou heardest them from heaven, and didst deliver them in thy great compassions. |

| Ти нагадував їм навернутися до закону Твого, але вони були упертими і не слухали заповідей Твоїх, і ухилялися від уставів Твоїх, якими жила б людина, якби виконувала їх, і хребет свій зробили твердим, і шию свою тримали пружно, і не слухали. | And thou didst testify against them, to bring them back to thy law: but they hearkened not, but sinned against thy commandments and thy judgments, which if a man do, he shall live in them; and they turned their back, and hardened their neck, and heard not. |

| Очікуючи їхнього навернення, Ти барився багато років і нагадував їм Духом Твоїм через пророків Твоїх, але вони не слухали. І Ти віддав їх у руки іноземних народів. | Yet thou didst bear long with them many years, and didst testify to them by thy Spirit by the hand of thy prophets: but they hearkened not; so thou gavest them into the hand of the nations of the land. |

| Але, з великого милосердя Твого, Ти не знищив їх до кінця, і не залишав їх, тому що Ти Бог благий і милостивий. | But thou in thy many mercies didst not appoint them to destruction, and didst not forsake them; for thou art strong, and merciful, and pitiful. |

| І нині, Боже наш, Боже великий, сильний і страшний, який зберігає завіт і милість! нехай не буде малим перед лицем Твоїм усе страждання, яке осягало нас, царів наших, князів наших, і священиків наших, і пророків наших, і батьків наших і весь народ Твій від днів царів ассирійських до цього дня. | And now, O our God, the powerful, the great, the mighty, and the terrible, keeping thy covenant and thy mercy, let not all the trouble seem little in thy sight which has come upon us, and our kings, and our princes, and our priests, and our prophets, and our fathers, and upon all thy people, from the days of the kings of Assur even to this day. |

| В усьому, що було з нами, Ти праведний, тому що Ти робив за правдою, а ми винні. | But thou art righteous in all the things that come upon us; for thou hast wrought faithfully, but we have greatly sinned. |

| Царі наші, князі наші, священики наші і батьки наші не виконували закону Твого, і не слухали заповідей Твоїх і нагадувань Твоїх, якими Ти нагадував їм. | And our kings, and our princes, and our priests, and our fathers, have not performed thy law, and have not given heed to thy commandments, and have not kept thy testimonies which thou didst testify to them. |

| І в царстві своєму, при великому добрі Твоєму, яке Ти давав їм, і на широкій і родючій землі, яку Ти відділив їм, вони не служили Тобі і не наверталися від злих діл своїх. | And they did not serve thee in thy kingdom, and in thy great goodness which thou gavest to them, and in the large and fat land which thou didst furnish before them, and they turned not from their evil devices. |

І тілами нашими і худобою нашою вони володіють за своєю сваволею, і ми у великому пригніченні. | and its produce is abundant for the kings whom thou didst appoint over us because of our sins; and they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, as it pleases them, and we are in great affliction. |

| і коли іноземні народи будуть привозити товари і все, що продається, в суботу, не брати в них у суботу і в священний день, і в сьомий рік залишати борги всякого роду. | And as for the people of the land who bring wares and all manner of merchandise to sell on the sabbath-day, we will not buy of them on the sabbath or on the holy day: and we will leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt. |

| І поставили ми собі в закон давати від себе по третині сикля в рік на потреби для дому Бога нашого: | And we will impose ordinances upon ourselves, to levy on ourselves the third part of a didrachm yearly for the service of the house of our God; |

| на хліби предкладення, на повсякчасне хлібне приношення і на повсякчасне всепалення, на суботи, на новомісяччя, на свята, на священні речі і на жертви за гріх для очищення Ізраїля, і на все, що звершується в домі Бога нашого. | the shewbread, and the continual meat-offering, and for the continual whole-burnt-offering, of the sabbaths, of the new moon, for the feast, and for the holy things, and the sin-offerings, to make atonement for Israel, and for the works of the house of our God. |

| І зобов’язалися ми щороку приносити в дім Господній початки з землі нашої і початки всяких плодів з усякого дерева; | and to bring the first-fruits of our land, and the first-fruits of the fruit of every tree, year by year, into the house of the Lord: |

| І початки з меленого хліба нашого і приношень наших, і плодів з усякого дерева, вина й оливи ми будемо доставляти священикам у комори при домі Бога нашого і десятину з землі нашої левитам. Вони, левити, будуть брати десятину в усіх містах, де у нас землеробство. | And the first-fruits of our corn, and the fruit of every tree, of wine, and of oil, will we bring to the priests to the treasury of the house of God; and a tithe of our land to the Levites: for the Levites themselves shall receive tithes in all the cities of the land we cultivate. |

| І жили начальники народу в Єрусалимі, а інші з народу кинули жереби, щоб одна з десяти частин їх ішла на проживання у святе місто Єрусалим, а дев’ять залишалися в інших містах. | And the chiefs of the people dwelt in Jerusalem: and the rest of the people cast lots, to bring one of every ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities. |

| І благословив народ усіх, які добровільно погодилися жити в Єрусалимі. | And the people blessed all the men that volunteered to dwell in Jerusalem. |

| При освяченні стіни Єрусалимської запросили левитів з усіх місць їхніх, наказуючи їм прийти в Єрусалим для звершення освячення і радісного свята зі славослів’ями і піснями при звуках кимвалів, псалтирів і гуслів. | And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites in their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep a feast of dedication and gladness with thanksgiving, and they sounded cymbals with songs, and had psalteries and harps. |

| І зібралися сини співців з округи єрусалимської і з сіл Нетофафських, | And the sons of the singers were assembled both from the neighbourhood round about to Jerusalem, and from the villages, |

| і з Беф-Гаггилгала, і з полів Геви й Азмавета, тому що співці побудували собі села в околицях Єрусалима. | and from the country: for the singers built themselves villages by Jerusalem. |

| І очистилися священики і левити, й очистили народ і ворота, і стіну. | And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and they purified the people, and the porters, and the wall. |

| Тоді я повів начальників Юдеї на стіну і поставив два великих хори для шестя, і один з них ішов праворуч стіни до Гнойових воріт. | And they brought up the princes of Juda on the wall, and they appointed two great companies for thanksgiving, and they passed on the right hand on the wall of the dung-gate. |

| Усі ізраїльтяни у дні Зоровавеля й у дні Неємії давали частки співцям і воротарям на кожен день і віддавали святині левитам, а левити віддавали святині синам Аарона. | And all Israel in the days of Zorobabel, and in the days of Neemias, gave the portions of the singers and the porters, a daily rate: and consecrated them to the Levites: and the Levites consecrated them to the sons of Aaron. |

| У той день було читано з книги Мойсеєвої вголос народу і знайдено написане в ній: аммонитянин і моавитянин не може ввійти в громаду Божу повіки, | In that day they read in the book of Moses in the ears of the people; and it was found written in it, that the Ammonites and Moabites should not enter into the congregation of God for ever; |

| тому що вони не зустріли синів Ізраїля з хлібом і водою і найняли проти нього Валаама, щоб проклясти його, але Бог наш обернув проклін на благословення. | because they met not the children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them: but our God turned the curse into a blessing. |

| Почувши цей закон, вони відокремили все іноплемінне від Ізраїля. | And it came to pass, when they heard the law, that they were separated, even every alien in Israel. |
|

|
| А раніше того священик Елиашив, приставлений до кімнат при домі Бога нашого, близький родич Товії, | And before this time Eliasib the priest dwelt in the treasury of the house of our God, connected with Tobias; |
|

|
| приготував для нього велику кімнату, в яку раніше клали хлібне приношення, ладан і сосуди, і десятини хліба, вина й оливи, призначені законом для левитів, співців і воротарів, і приношення для священиків. | and he made himself a great treasury, and there they were formerly in the habit of bestowing the offerings, and the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithe of the corn, and the wine, and the oil, the ordered portion of the Levites, and singers, and porters; and the first-fruits of the priests. |

| Коли все це відбувалося, я не був у Єрусалимі, тому що в тридцять другому році Вавилонського царя Артаксеркса я ходив до царя, і після декількох днів знову випросився в царя. | But in all this time I was not in Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Arthasastha king of Babylon I came to the king, and after a certain time I made my request of the king; |

| Коли я прийшов у Єрусалим і дізнався про лиху справу, яку зробив Елиашив, приготувавши для Товії кімнату на дворах дому Божого, | and I came to Jerusalem, and I understood the mischief which Eliasib had done in the case of Tobias, in making for him a treasury in the court of the house of God. |

| тоді мені було дуже неприємно, і я викинув усі домашні речі Товії геть з кімнати | And it appeared very evil to me: so I cast forth all the furniture of the house of Tobias from the treasury. |
|

|
| і сказав, щоб очистили кімнати, і повелів знову внести туди сосуди дому Божого, хлібне приношення і ладан. | And I gave orders, and they purified the treasuries: and I restored thither the vessels of the house of God, and the offerings, and the frankincense. |
|

|
| Ще дізнався, що частки левитам не віддаються, і що левити і співці, які робили свою справу, розбіглися, кожен на своє поле. | And I understood that the portion of the Levites had not been given: and they had fled every one to his field, the Levites and the singers doing the work. |
|

|
| Я зробив за це догану начальникам і сказав: навіщо залишений нами дім Божий? І я зібрав їх і поставив їх на місце їхнє. | And I strove with the commanders, and said, Wherefore has the house of God been abandoned? and I assembled them, and set them in their place. |
|

|
| І всі юдеї стали приносити десятини хліба, вина й оливи в комори. | And all Juda brought a tithe of the wheat and the wine and the oil into the treasuries, |

|
| І приставив я до комор Шелемію священика і Садока книжника і Федаію з левитів, і при них Ханана, сина Закхура, сина Матфанії, тому що вони вважалися вірними. І на них покладено роздавати частки братам своїм. | to the charge of Selemia the priest, and Sadoc the scribe, and Phadaea of the Levites: and next to them was Anan the son of Zacchur, son of Matthanias; for they were accounted faithful: it was their office to distribute to their brethren. |

| Пом’яни мене за це, Боже мій, і не згладь ревних діл моїх, які я зробив для дому Бога мого і для служіння при ньому! | Remember me, O God, in this, and let not my kindness be forgotten which I have wrought in regard to the house of the Lord God. |

|
| У ті дні я побачив у Юдеї, що в суботу топчуть точила, возять снопи і нав’ючують ослів вином, виноградом, смоквами і всяким вантажем, і відвозять у суботній день у Єрусалим. І я суворо виговорив їм у той же день, коли вони продавали харчі. | In those days I saw in Juda men treading wine-presses on the sabbath, and carrying sheaves, and loading asses with both wine, and grapes, and figs, and every kind of burden, and bringing them into Jerusalem on the sabbath-day: |

| І тиряни жили в Юдеї і привозили рибу і всякий крам і продавали в суботу жителям Юдеї і в Єрусалимі. | and I testified in the day of their sale. Also their dwelt in it men bringing fish, and selling every kind of merchandise to the children of Juda and in Jerusalem on the sabbath. |

| І я зробив догану найзнатнішим з юдеїв і сказав їм: навіщо ви робите таке зло і оскверняєте день суботній? | And I strove with the free children of Juda, and said to them, What is this evil thing which ye do, and profane the sabbath-day? |

| Чи не так чинили батьки ваші, і за те Бог наш навів на нас і на місто це все цю біду? А ви збільшуєте гнів Його на Ізраїля, оскверняючи суботу. | Did not your fathers thus, and our God brought upon them and upon us and upon this city all these evils? and do ye bring additional wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath? |

| Після цього, коли смеркалося біля воріт єрусалимських, перед суботою, я звелів замикати двері і сказав, щоб не відмикали їх до ранку після суботи. І слуг моїх я поставив біля воріт, щоб ніяка ноша не проходила в день суботній. | And it came to pass, when the gates were set up in Jerusalem, before the sabbath, that I spoke, and they shut the gates; and I gave orders that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, that none should bring in burdens on the sabbath-day. |

| І ночували торговці і продавці всякого товару поза Єрусалимом раз і два. | So all the merchants lodged, and carried on traffic without Jerusalem once or twice. |

|
| Але я суворо виговорив їм і сказав їм: навіщо ви ночуєте біля стіни? Якщо зробите це в інший раз, я накладу руку на вас. З того часу вони не приходили в суботу. | Then I testified against them, and said to them, Why do ye lodge in front of the wall? if ye do so again, I will stretch out my hand upon you. From that time they came not on the sabbath. |

| І сказав я левитам, щоб вони очистилися і прийшли тримати варту біля воріт, щоб святити день суботній. І за це пом’яни мене, Боже мій, і пощади мене з великої милости Твоєї! | and I told the Levites who were purifying themselves, and came and kept the gates, that they should sanctify the sabbath-day. Remember me, O God, for these things, and spare me according to the abundance of thy mercy. |

| Ще в ті дні я бачив юдеїв, що взяли собі дружин з азотянок, аммонитянок і моавитянок; | And in those days I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab: |

| і тому сини їхні наполовину говорять азотською, або мовою інших народів, і не вміють говорити юдейською. | and their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and did not know how to speak in the Jewish language. |
|

|
| Я зробив за це догану і проклинав їх, і деяких з чоловіків бив, рвав на них волосся і заклинав їх Богом, щоб вони не віддавали дочок своїх за синів їхніх і не брали дочок їхніх за синів своїх і за себе. | And I strove with them and cursed them; and I smote some of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying,Ye shall not give your daughters to their sons, and ye shall not take of their daughters to your sons. |

| Чи не через них, говорив я, грішив Соломон, цар Ізраїлів? У багатьох народів не було такого царя, як він. Він був любимим Богом своїм, і Бог поставив його царем над усіма ізраїльтянами; і однак же чужоземні дружини ввели в гріх і його. | Did not Solomon king of Israel sin thus? though there was no king like him among many nations, and he was beloved of God, and God made him king over all Israel; yet strange women turned him aside. |

| І чи можна нам чути про вас, що ви робите все це велике зло, грішите перед Богом нашим, приймаючи у співжиття чужоземних дружин? | So we will not hearken to you to do all this evil, to break covenant with our God, —to marry strange wives. |
|

| І з синів Іоіади, сина великого священика Елиашива, один був зятем Санаваллата, хоронита. Я прогнав його від себе. | and Elisub the high priest, one of the sons of Joada, being son-in-law of Sanaballat the Uranite, I chased him away from me. |
|

|
| Пом’яни їм, Боже мій, що вони осквернили священство і завіт священичий і левитський! | Remember them, O God, for their false connection with the priesthood, and the breaking the covenant of the priesthood, and for defiling the Levites. |
|

|
| Так очистив я їх від усього чужоземного і відновив служби священиків і левитів, кожного у справі його, | So I purged them from all foreign connection, and established courses for the priests and the Levites, every man according to his work. |
|

|
31
|
| і доставку дров у призначені часи і початки. Пом’яни мене, Боже мій, на благо мені! | And the offering of the wood-bearers was at certain set times, and in the times of the first-fruits. Remember me, O our God, for good. |
