| Було слово Господнє до мене: | And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, |

| йди і звісти народу Моєму злі діла їхні і синам їхнім — беззаконня, які вони звершили проти Мене, щоб вони сповістили синам синів своїх; | Go thy way, and show my people their sinful deeds, and their children their wickedness which they have done against me; that they may tell their children’s children: |
|

| бо гріхи батьків їхніх зросли у них; забувши Мене, вони приносили жертви богам чужим. | because the sins of their fathers are increased in them: for they have forgotten me, and have done sacrifice unto strange gods. |
|

|
| Чи не Я вивів їх із землі Єгипетської, з дому рабства? а вони прогнівили Мене і поради Мої знехтували. | Did I not bring them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage? but they have provoked me unto wrath, and have despised my counsels. |
|

8
|
| Ти обстрижи волосся голови твоєї, і кинь на них усе зле, бо вони не слухалися закону Мого — народ неприборканий! | Shake thou then the hair of thy head, and cast all evils upon them, for they have not been obedient unto my law, but it is a rebellious people. |
|

|
| Доки Я буду терпіти їх, яким зробив стільки благодіянь? | How long shall I forbear them, unto whom I have done so much good? |
|

|
10
|
| Заради них Я багатьох царів скинув; уразив фараона з рабами його і з усім військом його; | Many kings have I overthrown for their sakes; Pharaoh with his servants and all his host have I smitten down. |
|

11
|
| усіх язичників від лиця їх погубив, і на сході народ двох областей, Тира і Сидона, розсіяв і всіх ворогів їхніх знищив. | All the nations have I destroyed before them, and in the east I have scattered the people of two provinces, even of Tyre and Sidon, and have slain all their adversaries. |

| Ти ж так скажи їм: так говорить Господь: | Speak thou therefore unto them, saying, |

|
| саме Я провів вас через море і по дну його проклав вам обгороджену вулицю, дав вам вождя Мойсея й Аарона священика, | Thus saith the Lord, of a truth I brought you through the sea, and where there was no path I made for you highways; I gave you Moses for a leader, and Aaron for a priest. |
|

|
| дав вам світло у стовпі вогненному, і багато чудес створив серед вас; а ви Мене забули, — говорить Господь. | I gave you light in a pillar of fire, and great wonders have I done among you; yet have ye forgotten me, saith the Lord. |
|

|
| Так говорить Господь Вседержитель: перепели були вам у знамення. Я дав вам стани для захисту, але ви і там нарікали | Thus saith the Lord Almighty, The quails were for a token to you; I gave you a camp for your safeguard, nevertheless ye murmured there: |
|

|
| і не раділи в ім’я Моє погибелі ворогів ваших, але навіть донині ще нарікаєте. | and ye triumphed not in my name for the destruction of your enemies, but ever to this day do ye yet murmur. |
|

|
| Де ті благодіяння, які Я зробив вам? Чи не у пустелі, коли ви, зголоднівши, волали до Мене, | Where are the benefits that I have done for you? when ye were hungry and thirsty in the wilderness, did ye not cry unto me, |
|

|
18
|
| говорячи: «навіщо Ти привів нас у цю пустелю? уморити нас? краще нам було служити єгиптянам, ніж померти у цій пустелі»? | saying, Why hast thou brought us into this wilderness to kill us? it had been better for us to have served the Egyptians, than to die in this wilderness. |
|

|
| Я зглянувся на стогони ваші, і дав вам манну в їжу: ви їли хліб ангельський. | I had pity upon your mournings, and gave you manna for food; ye did eat angels’ bread. |
|

|
20
|
| Коли ви відчували спрагу, чи не розсік Я камінь, і потекли води до ситости? від спеки покривав вас листями дерев. | When ye were thirsty, did I not cleave the rock, and waters flowed out to your fill? for the heat I covered you with the leaves of the trees. |
|

21
|
| Розділив вам землі родючі; хананеїв, ферезеїв і филистимлян вигнав від лиця вашого. Що ще зроблю вам? — говорить Господь. | I divided among you fruitful lands; I cast out the Canaanites, the Perizzites, and the Philistines, before you: what shall I yet do more for you? saith the Lord. |

| Так говорить Господь Вседержитель: коли ви були у пустелі, на річці Мерри, і ті, що відчували спрагу, хулили ім’я Моє, | Thus saith the Lord Almighty, When ye were in the wilderness, at the bitter river, being athirst, and blaspheming my name, |

|
| не вогонь послав Я на вас за богохульства, але вклав дерево у воду і ріку зробив солодкою. | I gave you not fire for your blasphemies, but cast a tree in the water, and made the river sweet. |
|

|
24
|
| Що зроблю тобі, Якове? Не хотів ти коритися, Іудо. Переселюся до інших народів і дам їм ім’я Моє, щоб дотримувалися законів Моїх. | What shall I do unto thee, O Jacob? thou, Judah, wouldest not obey me: I will turn me to other nations, and unto them will I give my name, that they may keep my statutes. |

| Оскільки ви Мене залишили, то і Я залишу вас; тих, що прохають у Мене милости, не помилую. | Seeing ye have forsaken me, I also will forsake you; when ye ask me to be merciful unto you, I will have no mercy upon you. |

| Коли будете закликати Мене, Я не почую вас, бо ви осквернили руки ваші кров’ю, і ноги ваші швидкі на здійснення людиновбивства. | Whensoever ye shall call upon me, I will not hear you: for ye have defiled your hands with blood, and your feet are swift to commit manslaughter. |

| Ви ніби не Мене залишили, а вас самих, — говорить Господь. | Ye have not as it were forsaken me, but your own selves, saith the Lord. |
|

|
28
|
| Так говорить Господь Вседержитель: чи не Я благав вас, як батько синів і як мати дочок і як годувальниця годованців своїх, | Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Have I not prayed you as a father his sons, as a mother her daughters, and a nurse her young babes, |
|

|
| щоб ви були Мені народом і Я вам Богом, щоб ви були Мені синами і Я вам Отцем? | that ye would be my people, and I should be your God; that ye would be my children, and I should be your father? |
|

|
30
|
| Я зібрав вас, як курка пташенят своїх під крила свої. Що нині зроблю вам? Відкину вас від лиця Мого. | I gathered you together, as a hen gathereth her chicks under her wings: but now, what shall I do unto you? I will cast you out from my presence. |
|

|
| Коли принесете Мені приношення, відверну лице Моє від вас; бо ваші дні святкові і новомісяччя й обрізання Я відкинув. | When ye offer oblations unto me, I will turn my face from you: for your solemn feast days, your new moons, and your circumcisions of the flesh, have I rejected. |
|

|
| Я послав до вас рабів Моїх, пророків; ви, схопивши їх, умертвили і розтерзали тіла їхні. Кров їхню Я стягну, — говорить Господь. | I sent unto you my servants the prophets, whom ye have taken and slain, and torn their bodies in pieces, whose blood I will require of your hands, saith the Lord. |

| Так говорить Господь Вседержитель: дім ваш порожній. Розвію вас, як вітер полову, | Thus saith the Lord Almighty, Your house is desolate, I will cast you out as the wind doth stubble. |
|

|
| і сини не будуть мати потомства, бо заповідь Мою знехтували і робили те, що є злом переді Мною. | And your children shall not be fruitful; for they have neglected my commandment unto you, and done that which is evil before me. |
|

|
35
|
| Віддам доми ваші людям грядущим, які, не чувши Мене, увірують, які, хоч Я не показував їм знамень, виконають те, що Я заповів, | Your houses will I give to a people that shall come; who not having heard of me yet believe me; they to whom I have shown no signs shall do that which I have commanded. |
|

|
| не бачивши пророків, згадають про свої беззаконня. | They have seen no prophets, yet they shall call their former estate to remembrance. |
|

|
| Заповідаю благодать людям грядущим, діти яких, не бачивши Мене очима плотськими, але духом віруючи тому, що Я сказав, торжествують з веселощами. | I take to witness the grace of the people that shall come, whose little ones rejoice with gladness: and though they see me not with bodily eyes, yet in spirit they shall believe the thing that I say. |

| Отже, тепер дивися, брате, яка слава, — дивися на людей, що грядуть зі сходу, | And now, O father, behold with glory; and see the people that come from the east: |
|

|
| яким Я дам у вожді Авраама, Ісаака та Якова, й Осію, і Амоса, і Михея, й Іоїля, й Авдія, й Іону, | unto whom I will give for leaders, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Hosea, Amos, and Micah, Joel, Obadiah, and Jonah, |

| і Наума, й Аввакума, Софонію, Аггея, Захарію і Малахію, який наречений і ангелом Господнім. | Nahum, and Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, who is called also the angel of the Lord. |

Chapter 2

|
| Так говорить Господь: Я вивів народ цей з рабства, дав їм повеління через рабів Моїх, пророків, яких вони не захотіли слухати, але відкинули Мої поради. | Thus saith the Lord, I brought this people out of bondage, and I gave them my commandments by my servants the prophets; whom they would not hear, but set my counsels at nought. |

| Мати, яка народила їх, говорить їм: «ідіть, діти; бо я вдова і залишена. | The mother that bare them saith unto them, go your way, O my children; for I am a widow and forsaken. |
|

|
3
|
| Я виховала вас з радістю, і відпустила з плачем і гіркотою, бо ви згрішили перед Господом Богом вашим, і зробили зле перед Ним. | I brought you up with gladness, and with sorrow and heaviness have I lost you: for ye have sinned before the Lord God, and done that which is evil before me. |
|

| Нині ж що зроблю для вас? Я вдова і залишена: йдіть, діти, і просіть у Господа милости». | But what shall I now do unto you? for I am a widow and forsaken: go your way, O my children, and ask mercy of the Lord. |
|

| Тебе, Отче, прикликаю за свідка на матір синів, які не захотіли зберігати завіту мого. | As for me, O father, I call upon thee for a witness over the mother of these children, because they would not keep my covenant, |
|

|
6
|
| Віддай їх на посоромлення і матір їхню — на розкрадання, щоб не було роду їхнього. | that thou bring them to confusion, and their mother to a spoil, that there may be no offspring of them. |
|
7
|
7
|
| Нехай розсіються імена їхні по народах і згладяться на землі, бо вони знехтували завіт мій. | Let them be scattered abroad among the heathen, let their names be blotted out of the earth: for they have despised my covenant. |
|

|
8
|
| Горе тобі, Ассуре, що ховаєш у себе нечестивих! Роде лукавий! згадай, що Я зробив Содому і Гоморрі. | Woe unto thee, Assyria, thou that hidest the unrighteous with thee! O thou wicked nation, remember what I did unto Sodom and Gomorrah; |

| Земля їх лежить у смоляних брилах і пагорбах попелу. Так учиню Я з тими, які Мене не слухалися, — говорить Господь Вседержитель. | whose land lieth in clods of pitch and heaps of ashes: even so also will I do unto them that have not hearkened unto me, saith the Lord Almighty. |

| Так говорить Господь до Ездри: звісти народу Моєму, що Я дам їм царство Єрусалимське, яке обіцяв Ізраїлю, | Thus saith the Lord unto Ezra, Tell my people that I will give them the kingdom of Jerusalem, which I would have given unto Israel. |
|

|
| і прийму славу від них і дам їм оселі вічні, які приготував для них. | Their glory also will I take unto me, and give these the everlasting tabernacles, which I had prepared for them. |
|
12
|
12
|
| Дерево життя буде для них мастю запашною; не будуть зморювані працею і не знеможуть. | They shall have the tree of life for an ointment of sweet savor; they shall neither labor, nor be weary. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Ідіть і одержіть; просіть собі днів малих, щоб вони не забарилися. Уже готове для вас царство: пильнуйте. | Ask, and ye shall receive: pray for few days unto you, that they may be shortened: the kingdom is already prepared for you: watch. |
|

|
14
|
| Свідчіть, небо і земля, бо Я стер зле і створив добре. Живу Я! — говорить Господь. | Take heaven and earth to witness, take them to witness; for I have given up the evil, and created the good: for I live, saith the Lord. |
|

|
15
|
| Мати! обійми синів твоїх, виховуй їх з радістю; як голубка, зміцнюй ноги їхні, бо Я обрав тебе, — говорить Господь. | Mother, embrace thy children; I will bring them out with gladness like a dove; establish their feet; for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord. |
|

|
| І воскрешу мертвих на місцях їхніх і з гробів виведу їх, бо Я пізнав ім’я Моє в Ізраїлі. | And those that be dead will I raise up again from their places, and bring them out from their tombs: for I have known my name in them. |
|

|
| Не бійся, мати синів, бо Я обрав тебе, — говорить Господь. | Fear not, thou mother of the children: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Я пошлю на допомогу тобі рабів Моїх Ісаю та Єремію, за порадою яких Я освятив і приготував тобі дванадцять дерев, обтяжених різними плодами, | For thy help will I send my servants Isaiah and Jeremiah, after whose counsel I have sanctified and prepared for thee twelve trees laden with diverse fruits, |

| і стільки ж джерел, які течуть молоком і медом, і сім гір найбільших, які вирощують троянду і лілею, через які сповню радістю синів твоїх. | and as many fountains flowing with milk and honey, and seven mighty mountains, whereupon there grow roses and lilies, whereby I will fill thy children with joy. |
|

| Виправдай удову, дай суд бідному, допоможи убогому, захисти сироту, одягни нагого, | Do right to the widow, judge the fatherless, give to the poor, defend the orphan, clothe the naked, |
|

|
| про розслабленого і немічного потурбуйся, з кульгавого не смійся, безрукого захисти, і сліпого приведи до бачення світла Мого, | heal the broken and the weak, laugh not a lame man to scorn, defend the maimed, and let the blind man come unto the sight of my glory. |
|

22
|
| старця і юнака у стінах твоїх збережи, | Keep the old and young within thy walls. |
|

|
23
|
| мертвих, де знайдеш, засвідчивши, віддай гробу, і Я дам тобі перше місце у Моєму воскресінні. | Wheresoever thou findest the dead, set a sign upon them and commit them to the grave, and I will give thee the first place in my resurrection. |
|

24
|
| Відпочивай і упокоюйся, народе Мій, бо прийде спокій твій. | Abide still, O my people, and take thy rest, for thy quietness shall come. |
|
25
|
25
|
| Годуй синів твоїх, добра годувальнице, зміцнюй ноги їхні. | Nourish thy children, O thou good nurse, and establish their feet. |
|

|
| З рабів, яких Я дав тобі, ніхто нехай не загине, бо Я стягну їх від тебе. | As for the servants whom I have given thee, there shall not one of them perish; for I will require them from among thy number. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Не слабшай. Коли прийде день печалі і тісноти, інші будуть плакати і журитися, а ти будеш весела і в достатку. | Be not careful overmuch: for when the day of tribulation and anguish cometh, others shall weep and be sorrowful, but thou shalt be merry and have abundance. |
|

|
| Язичники будуть заздрити тобі, але нічого проти тебе зробити не зможуть, — говорить Господь. | The nations shall envy thee, but they shall be able to do nothing against thee, saith the Lord. |
|

|

|
| Руки Мої покриють тебе, щоб сини твої не бачили геєни. | My hands shall cover thee, so that thy children see not hell. |
|
30
|
30
|
| Утішайся, мати, з синами твоїми, бо Я спасу тебе. | Be joyful, O thou mother, with thy children; for I will deliver thee, saith the Lord. |
|
31
|
31
|
| Пам’ятай про синів твоїх, що спочивають. Я виведу їх з країв землі й учиню їм милість, бо Я милостивий, — говорить Господь Вседержитель. | Remember thy children that sleep, for I shall bring them out of the secret places of the earth, and show mercy unto them: for I am merciful, saith the Lord Almighty. |

| Обійми дітей твоїх, доки Я прийду і зроблю їм милість; бо джерела Мої повні і благодать Моя не зменшиться. | Embrace thy children until I come, and proclaim mercy unto them: for my wells run over, and my grace shall not fail. |
|

|
| Я, Ездра, одержав на горі Орив повеління від Господа йти до Ізраїля. Коли я прийшов до них, вони відкинули мене і знехтували заповідь Господню. | I Ezra received a charge from the Lord upon the mount Horeb, that I should go unto Israel; but when I came unto them, they would none of me, and rejected the commandment of the Lord. |

| Тому вам говорю, язичники, що можете чути і розуміти: чекайте на Пастиря вашого, Він дасть вам мир вічний, бо близько Той, Який прийде на скінчення віку. | And therefore I say unto you, O ye nations, that hear and understand, look for your shepherd, he shall give you everlasting rest; for he is nigh at hand, that shall come in the end of the world. |

| Будьте готові до воздаяння царства, бо світло невечірнє засяє вам на вічні часи. | Be ready to the rewards of the kingdom, for the everlasting light shall shine upon you forevermore. |
|

|
| Уникайте тіні віку цього; прийміть солодкість слави вашої. Я відкрито свідчу про Спасителя мого. | Flee the shadow of this world, receive the joyfulness of your glory: I call to witness my savior openly. |
|

|

|
| Ввірений дар прийміть, і насолоджуйтеся, дякуючи Тому, Хто прикликав вас у небесне царство. | O receive that which is given you of the Lord, and be joyful, giving thanks unto him that hath called you to heavenly kingdoms. |
|

|
| Встаньте і стійте, і дивіться, яка кількість знаменованих на вечері Господній, | Arise up and stand, and behold the number of those that are sealed in the feast of the Lord; |
|

|
39
|
| які, переселившись від тіні віку цього, одержали від Господа світлий одяг. | they that withdrew them from the shadow of the world have received glorious garments of the Lord. |
|
40
|
40
|
| Прийми число твоє, Сионе, і прийми твоїх, одягнених у біле вбрання, які виконали закон Господній. | Look upon thy number, O Zion, and make up the reckoning of those of thine that are clothed in white, who have fulfilled the law of the Lord. |
|

|
41
|
| Число бажаних синів твоїх повне. Проси державу Господа, щоб освятився народ твій, покликаний від початку. | The number of thy children, whom thou longest for, is fulfilled: beseech the power of the Lord, that thy people, who have been called from the beginning, may be hallowed. |
|

|
| Я, Ездра, бачив на горі Сионській сонм великий, якого не міг перелічити, і всі вони піснями прославляли Господа. | I Ezra saw upon the mount Zion a great multitude, whom I could not number, and they all praised the Lord with songs. |
|

|
| Посеред них був юнак величний, що перевершував усіх їх, і покладав вінці на голову кожного з них і тим ще більше підносився; я вражений був здивуванням. | And in the midst of them there was a young man of a high stature, taller than all the rest, and upon every one of their heads he set crowns, and was more exalted; whereat I marveled greatly. |

| Тоді я запитав ангела: хто ці, господарю мій? | So I asked the angel, and said, What are these, my Lord? |

|
| Він у відповідь мені сказав: це ті, які склали смертний одяг і одяглися у безсмертний і сповідали ім’я Боже; вони тепер увінчуються і приймають переможні пальми. | He answered and said unto me, These are they that have put off the mortal clothing, and put on the immortal, and have confessed the name of God: now are they crowned, and receive palms. |

| Я запитав: а хто цей юнак, який покладає на них вінці і вручає їм пальми? | Then said I unto the angel, What young man is he that setteth crowns upon them, and giveth them palms in their hands? |
|

| Він відповів мені: Сам Син Божий, Якого вони прославляли у віці цьому. І я почав славити їх, які мужньо стояли за ім’я Господнє. | So he answered and said unto me, It is the Son of God, whom they have confessed in the world. Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so valiantly for the name of the Lord. |

| Тоді ангел сказав мені: йди і звісти народу моєму, які бачив ти дивні діла Господа Бога. | Then the angel said unto me, Go thy way, and tell my people what manner of things, and how great wonders of the Lord God thou hast seen. |

| У тридцятому році після розорення міста був я у Вавилоні, і засмучувався, лежачи на постелі моїй, і помисли входили у серце моє, | In the thirtieth year after the ruin of the city, I Salathiel (the same is Ezra) was in Babylon, and lay troubled upon my bed, and my thoughts came up over my heart: |

| бо я бачив спустошення Сиону і багатство тих, що жили у Вавилоні. | for I saw the desolation of Zion, and the wealth of them that dwelt at Babylon. |

|
| І обурився дух мій, і я почав зі страхом говорити до Всевишнього, | And my spirit was sore moved, so that I began to speak words full of fear to the Most High, and said, |
|

|
4
|
| і сказав: Владико Господи! Ти сказав від початку, коли єдиний заснував землю, і повелів пороху, | O Lord that bearest rule, didst thou not speak at the beginning, when thou didst fashion the earth, and that thyself alone, and commandest the dust, |
|

|
| і дав Адаму тіло смертне, яке було також творінням рук Твоїх, і вдихнув у нього дух життя, і він зробився живим перед Тобою, | and it gave thee Adam, a body without a soul? yet it was the workmanship of thy hands, and thou didst breathe into him the breath of life, and he was made living before thee. |

| і ввів його у рай, який насадила правиця Твоя, раніше ніж земля виростила плоди; | And thou leddest him into paradise, which thy right hand did plant, before ever the earth came forward. |
|

|
| Ти повелів йому зберігати заповідь Твою, але він порушив її, і Ти засудив його на смерть, і рід його і покоління, які народилися від нього, і племена, народи і паростки їх, яким немає числа. | And unto him thou gavest thy one commandment: which he transgressed, and immediately thou appointedst death for him and in his generations; and there were born of him nations and tribes, peoples and kindreds, without number. |

| З часом Ти навів потоп на жителів землі і знищив їх, | Nevertheless again in process of time thou broughtest the flood upon those that dwelt in the world, and destroyedst them. |

| і сповнилося на кожному з них, — як на Адамі смерть, так на цих потоп. | And it came to pass that the same hap befell them; like as death was to Adam, so was the flood to these. |

| Одного з них Ти залишив — Ноя з родиною його, і від нього пішли всі праведні. | Nevertheless one of them thou leftest, Noah with his household, even all the righteous men that came of him. |

| Коли почали розмножуватися жителі землі, і примножилися сини і народи і численні покоління, і знову почали віддаватися нечестю, більше ніж попередні, | And it came to pass, that when they that dwelt upon the earth began to multiply, they multiplied also children, and peoples, and many nations, and began again to be more ungodly than the first. |

| коли почали чинити перед Тобою беззаконня: Ти обрав Собі з них мужа, якому ім’я Авраам, | And it came to pass, when they did wickedly before thee, thou didst choose thee one from among them, whose name was Abraham; |

| і полюбив його і відкрив йому одному волю Твою, | and him thou lovedst, and unto him only thou showedst the end of the times secretly by night: |

|
| і уклав з ним завіт вічний, і сказав йому, що ніколи не залишиш сімені його. І дав йому Ісаака, й Ісааку дав Якова та Ісава; | and madest an everlasting covenant with him, promising him that thou wouldest never forsake his seed. |

|
| Ти обрав Собі Якова, Ісава ж відкинув. І примножився Яків надзвичайно. | And unto him thou gavest Isaac, and unto Isaac thou gavest Jacob and Esau. And thou didst set apart Jacob for thyself, but didst put by Esau: and Jacob became a great multitude. |

| Коли Ти вивів з Єгипту сíм’я його і привів до гори Синайської, | And it came to pass, that when thou leddest his seed out of Egypt, thou broughtest them up to the mount Sinai. |

| тоді прихилив небеса, впорядкував землю, захитав вселенну, привів у трепет безодні й увесь світ у сум’яття. | Thou bowedst the heavens also, and didst shake the earth, and movedst the whole world, and madest the depths to tremble, and troubledst the course of that age. |

|
| І пройшла слава Твоя в чотирьох явищах: у вогні, землетрусі, бурхливому вітрі і морозі, щоб дати закон сімені Якова і радіння роду Ізраїля, | And thy glory went through four gates, of fire, and of earthquake, and of wind, and of cold; that thou mightest give the law unto the seed of Jacob, and the commandment unto the generation of Israel. |

| але не відібрав у їх серця лукавого, щоб закон Твій приніс у них плід. | And yet tookest thou not away from them their wicked heart, that thy law might bring forth fruit in them. |

| Із серцем лукавим перший Адам переступив заповідь, і був переможений; так і всі, що від нього пішли. | For the first Adam bearing a wicked heart transgressed, and was overcome; and not he only, but all they also that are born of him. |

|
| Залишилася неміч і закон у серці народу з коренем зла, і відступило добре, і залишилося лихе. | Thus disease was made permanent; and the law was in the heart of the people along with the wickedness of the root; so the good departed away, and that which was wicked abode still. |

| Минули часи і закінчилися літа, — і Ти воздвиг Собі раба, на ім’я Давид; | So the times passed away, and the years were brought to an end: then didst thou raise thee up a servant, called David, |

| повелів йому побудувати місто імені Твоєму і в ньому приносити Тобі фіміам і жертви. | whom thou commandedest to build a city unto thy name, and to offer oblations unto thee therein of thine own. |

| Багато років це виконувалось, і потім згрішили ті, що населяли місто, | When this was done many years, then they that inhabited the city did evil, |

|
| в усьому чинячи так, як учинив Адам і всі його нащадки; бо й у них було серце лукаве. | in all things doing even as Adam and all his generations had done: for they also bare a wicked heart: |

|
| І Ти віддав місто Твоє до рук ворогів Твоїх. | and so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies. |
|

|

|
| Невже краще живуть мешканці Вавилона і за це володіють Сионом? | And I said then in my heart, are their deeds any better that inhabit Babylon? and hath she therefore dominion over Zion? |

|
| Коли я прийшов сюди, бачив нечестя, яким немає числа, і у цьому тридцятому році полонення бачить душа моя багатьох грішників, — і знемогло серце моє, | For it came to pass when I came hither, that I saw also impieties without number, and my soul saw many evildoers in this thirtieth year, so that my heart failed me. |

| бо я бачив, як Ти підтримуєш цих грішників і щадиш нечестивців, а народ Твій погубив, ворогів же Твоїх зберіг і не явив про те ніякого знамення. | For I have seen how thou sufferest them sinning, and hast spared the ungodly doers, and hast destroyed thy people, and hast preserved thine enemies; and thou hast not signified |

| Не розумію, як цей путь міг змінитися. Невже Вавилон чинить краще, ніж Сион? | unto any how thy way may be comprehended. Are the deeds of Babylon better than those of Zion? |
|

|
| Чи інший народ пізнав Тебе, крім Ізраїля? або які племена вірували завітам Твоїм, як Яків? | Or is there any other nation that knoweth thee beside Israel? or what tribes have so believed thy covenants as these tribes of Jacob? |
|

|
| Ні винагорода їм не рівномірна, ні труд їхній не приніс плоду, бо я пройшов серед народів, і бачив, що вони живуть у достатку, хоч і не згадують про заповіді Твої. | And yet their reward appeareth not, and their labor hath no fruit: for I have gone hither and thither through the nations, and I see that they abound in wealth, and think not upon thy commandments. |

| Отже, зваж на терезах і наші беззаконня, і діла тих, що живуть на землі, і ніде не знайдеться ім’я Твоє, як тільки в Ізраїля. | Weigh thou therefore our iniquities now in the balance, and theirs also that dwell in the world; and so shall it be found which way the scale inclineth. |

| Коли не грішили перед Тобою ті, що живуть на землі? або який народ так зберіг заповіді Твої? | Or when was it that they that dwell upon the earth have not sinned in thy sight? or what nation hath so kept thy commandments? |

| Між цими хоч за іменами знайдеш тих, що зберігають заповіді Твої, а в інших народів не знайдеш. | Thou shalt find that men who may be reckoned by name have kept thy precepts; but nations thou shalt not find. |

|
| Тоді відповів мені посланий до мене ангел, якому ім’я Уриїл, | And the angel that was sent unto me, whose name was Uriel, gave me an answer, |
|

|
| і сказав: серце твоє занадто далеко зайшло у цьому віці, що ти помишляєш осягнути путь Всевишнього. | and said to me, thy heart hath utterly failed thee in regarding this world, and thinkest thou to comprehend the way of the Most High? |
|

|
| Я відповів: так, господарю мій. Він же сказав мені: три путі посланий я показати тобі і три подоби запропонувати тобі. | Then said I, Yea my Lord. And he answered me, and said, I am sent to show thee three ways, and to set forth three similitudes before thee: |
|

|
| Якщо ти одну з них поясниш мені, то і я покажу тобі путь, яку бажаєш ти бачити, і навчу тебе, звідки пішло серце лукаве. | whereof if thou canst declare me one, I also will show thee the way that thou desirest to see, and I will teach thee wherefore the heart is wicked. |

| Тоді я сказав: говори, господарю мій. Він же сказав мені: йди і зваж вагу вогню, або виміряй мені подув вітру, або поверни мені день, який уже минув. | And I said, say on, my Lord. Then said he unto me, Go to, weigh me a weight of fire, or measure me a measure of wind, or call me again the day that is past. |

| Яка людина, — відповів я, — може зробити те, чого ти вимагаєш від мене? | Then answered I and said, who of the sons of men is able to do this, that thou shouldest ask me of such things? |

| А він сказав мені: якби я запитав тебе, скільки осель у серці морському, або скільки джерел у самій основі безодні, або скільки жил над твердю, або які межі у раю, | And he said unto me, If I had asked thee, saying, How many dwellings are there in the heart of the sea? or how many springs are there at the fountain head of the deep? or how many ways are above the firmament? or which are the outgoings of Hades? or which are the paths of paradise? |

| ти, можливо, сказав би мені: «у безодню я не схо́див, і в пекло також, і на небо ніколи не піднімався». | peradventure thou wouldest say unto me, I never went down into the deep, nor as yet into Hades, neither did I ever climb up into heaven. |

|
| Тепер же я запитав тебе тільки про вогонь, вітер і день, який ти пережив, і про те, без чого ти бути не можеш, і на це ти не відповів мені. | Nevertheless now have I asked thee but only of the fire and wind, and of the day, things wherethrough thou hast passed, and without which thou canst not be, and yet hast thou given me no answer of them. |

| І сказав мені: ти і того, що твоє і з тобою від юности, не можеш пізнати; | He said moreover unto me, Thine own things, that are grown up with thee, canst thou not know; |
|

|
| як же сосуд твій міг би вмістити у собі путь Всевишнього і у цьому вже помітно розтлінному віці зрозуміти розтління, яке очевидне в очах моїх? | how then can thy vessel comprehend the way of the Most High? and how can he that is already worn out with the corrupted world understand incorruption? |
|

| На це сказав я: краще було б нам зовсім не бути, ніж жити у нечесті і страждати, не знаючи, чому. | And when I heard these things I fell upon my face, and said unto him, It were better that we were not here at all, than that we should come hither and live in the midst of ungodliness, and suffer, and not know wherefore. |

|
| Він же у відповідь сказав мені: ось, я вирушив у польовий ліс, і застав дерева, що тримали раду. | He answered me, and said, The woods of the trees of the field went forth, and took counsel together, |
|

|
14
|
| Вони говорили: «прийдіть, і підемо й оголосимо війну морю, щоб воно відступило перед нами, і ми там виростимо для себе інші ліси». | and said, Come, let us go and make war against the sea, that it may depart away before us, and that we may make us more woods. |
|

|
15
|
| Подібним чином і хвилі морські мали нараду: «прийдіть», — говорили вони, — «піднімемося і завоюємо ліси польові, щоб і там придбати для себе інше місце». | The waves of the sea also in like manner took counsel together, and said, Come, let us go up and subdue the wood of the plain, that there also we may make us another country. |

| Але задум лісу виявився марним, бо прийшов вогонь і спалив його. | The counsel of the wood was in vain, for the fire came and consumed it: |

|
| Подібним чином скінчився і задум хвиль морських, бо став пісок, і перешкодив їм. | likewise also the counsel of the waves of the sea, for the sand stood up and stopped them. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Якби ти був суддею їх, кого б ти став виправдовувати або кого звинувачувати? | If thou wert judge now between these two, whom wouldest thou justify, or whom condemn? |
|
19
|
19
|
| Справді, відповів я, задуми їх були суєтні, бо земля дана лісу, дане місце і морю, щоб носити свої хвилі. | I answered and said, it is a foolish counsel that they both have taken, for the ground is given unto the wood, and the place of the sea is given to bear its waves. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Він же у відповідь сказав мені: справедливо розсудив ти; чому ж ти не судив таким самим чином себе самого? | Then answered he me, and said, Thou hast given a right judgment, and why judgest thou not in thine own case? |
|

|
| Бо як земля дана лісу, а море хвилям його, так ті, що живуть на землі, можуть розуміти тільки те, що на землі; а ті, що живуть на небесах, можуть розуміти те, що на висоті небес. | For like as the ground is given unto the wood, and the sea to his waves, even so they that dwell upon the earth may understand nothing but that which is upon the earth: and he only that dwelleth above the heavens may understand the things that are above the height of the heavens. |

| І відповів я, і сказав: молю Тебе, Господи, нехай дасться мені сенс розуміння. | Then answered I and said, I beseech thee, O Lord, wherefore is the power of understanding given unto me? |
|

|
| Не хотів я запитувати Тебе про вище, а про те, що щодня буває у нас: чому Ізраїль відданий на наругу язичникам? чому народ, який Ти полюбив, відданий нечестивим племенам, і закон батьків наших доведений до нікчемности, і писаних постанов ніде немає? | For it was not in my mind to be curious of the ways above, but of such things as pass by us daily; because Israel is given up as a reproach to the heathen, and the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations, and the law of our forefathers is made of none effect, and the written covenants are nowhere regarded, |

| Переходимо з віку цього, як сарана, життя наше минає у страху і жаху, і ми зробилися недостойними милосердя. | and we pass away out of the world as grasshoppers, and our life is as a vapor, neither are we worthy to obtain mercy. |
|

|
| Але що зробить Він з ім’ям Своїм, яке наречене на нас? ось про що я запитував. | What will he then do for his name whereby we are called? Of these things have I asked. |
|

|
| Він же відповів мені: чим більше будеш випробовувати, тим більше будеш дивуватися; бо швидко поспішає вік цей до свого завершення, | Then he answered me, and said, if thou be alive thou shalt see, and if thou livest long, thou shalt marvel; for the world hasteneth fast to pass away. |
|

| і не може вмістити того, що обіцяно праведним у майбутні часи, бо вік цей наповнений неправдою і немочами. | For it is not able to bear the things that are promised to the righteous in the times to come: for this world is full of sadness and infirmities. |
|

|
| А про те, що ти запитував мене, скажу тобі: посіяне зло, але ще не прийшов час викорінення його. | For the evil whereof thou askest me is sown, but the gathering thereof is not yet come. |
|

|
| Тому, доки посіяне не буде вирване, і місце, на якому насіяне зло, не скасується, — не прийде місце, на якому посіяне добро. | If therefore that which is sown be not reaped, and if the place where the evil is sown pass not away, there cannot come the field where the good is sown. |
|

|
| Бо зерно злого сімені посіяне у серці Адама від початку, і скільки нечестя породило воно до цього часу і буде родити до того часу, поки не настане молотьба! | For a grain of evil seed was sown in the heart of Adam from the beginning, and how much wickedness hath it brought forth unto this time! and how much shall it yet bring forth until the time of threshing come! |

| Розсуди у собі, скільки зерно злого насіння породило плодів нечестя! | Ponder now by thyself, how great fruit of wickedness a grain of evil seed hath brought forth. |
|

|
| Коли буде пожате незліченне колосся його, який величезний знадобиться для цього тік! | When the ears which are without number shall be sown, how great a floor shall they fill! |
|

|
33
|
| Як же і коли це буде? — запитав я його; чому наші літа малі і нещасливі? | Then I answered and said, How long? and when shall these things come to pass? wherefore are our years few and evil? |
|

|
| Не поспішай підніматися, — відповів він, — вище за Всевишнього; бо марно поспішаєш бути вище за Нього: занадто далеко заходиш. | And he answered me, and said, Thou dost not hasten more than the Most High: for thy haste is for thine own self, but he that is above hasteneth on behalf of many. |
|

| Чи не про те саме запитували душі праведних у затворах своїх, говорячи: «доки таким чином будемо ми надіятися? І коли плід нашої відплати?» | Did not the souls of the righteous ask question of these things in their chambers, saying, How long are we here? when cometh the fruit of the threshing time of our reward? |

| На це відповів мені Ієремиїл архангел: «коли виповниться число насінин у вас, бо Всевишній на терезах зважив вік цей, | And unto them Jeremiel the archangel gave answer, and said, Even when the number is fulfilled of them that are like unto you. For he hath weighed the world in the balance; |

|
| і мірою виміряв часи, і числом обчислив години, і не посуне і не прискорить доти, доки не виповниться визначена міра». | and by measure hath he measured the times, and by number hath he numbered the seasons; and he shall not move nor stir them, until the said measure be fulfilled. |
|

|
| Я ж у відповідь на це сказав йому: о, Владико Господи! а ми всі переповнені нечестям. | Then answered I and said, O Lord that bearest rule, yet even we all are full of impiety: |
|

|
| І, можливо, через нас не наповнюються житниці праведних, і заради гріхів тих, що живуть на землі. | and for our sakes peradventure it is that the threshing time of the righteous is kept back, because of the sins of them that dwell upon the earth. |
|
40
|
40
|
| На це він відповів мені: піди, запитай вагітну жінку, чи може, після виповнення дев’ятимісячного терміну, утроба її утримати у собі плід? | So he answered me, and said, Go thy way to a woman with child, and ask of her when she hath fulfilled her nine months, if her womb may keep the birth any longer within her. |

| Я сказав: не може. Тоді він сказав мені: подібні до утроби й оселі душ у пеклі. | Then said I, No, Lord, that can it not. And he said unto me, in Hades the chambers of souls are like the womb: |

|
| Як та, що народжує, поспішає народити, щоб звільнитися від болістей народження, так і ці поспішають віддати ввірене їм. | for like as a woman that travaileth maketh haste to escape the anguish of the travail: even so do these places hasten to deliver those things that are committed unto them from the beginning. |
|

|
| Спочатку буде показане тобі те, що ти бажаєш бачити. | Then shall it be shown thee concerning those things which thou desirest to see. |
|

|
| Якщо я знайшов благодать перед очима твоїми, — відповів я, — і якщо це можливо і я здатний до того, | Then answered I and said, if I have found favor in thy sight, and if it be possible, and if I be meet therefore, |
|
45
|
45
|
| покажи мені: чи більше те, що має прийти, за те, що минуло, чи те, що відбулося, більше за те, що буде? | show me this also, whether there be more to come than is past, or whether the more part is gone over us. |
|
46
|
46
|
| Що минуло, я це знаю, а що прийде, не відаю. | For what is gone I know, but what is to come I know not. |
|

|
| Він сказав мені: стань праворуч, і я поясню тобі значення подобою. | And he said unto me, Stand up upon the right side, and I shall expound the similitude unto thee. |
|

|
| І я став, і побачив: ось розпалена піч проходить переді мною; і коли полум’я пройшло, я побачив: залишився дим. | So I stood, and saw, and, behold, a hot burning oven passed by before me: and it happened, that when the flame was gone by I looked, and, behold, the smoke remained still. |

| Після цього пройшла переді мною хмара, наповнена водою, і пролився з неї сильний дощ; але як тільки стрімкість дощу припинилася, залишилися краплі. | After this there passed by before me a watery cloud, and sent down much rain with a storm; and when the stormy rain was past, the drops remained therein still. |

| Тоді він сказав мені: розмірковуй про себе: як дощ більший за краплі, а вогонь більший за дим, так міра минулого перевищила, а залишилися краплі і дим. | Then said he unto me, Consider with thyself; as the rain is more than the drops, and the fire is greater than the smoke, so the quantity which is past did more exceed; but the drops and the smoke remained still. |

| Тоді я благав його і сказав: чи думаєш ти, що я доживу до цих днів? і що буде у ці дні? | Then I prayed, and said, May I live, thinkest thou, until that time? or who shall be in those days? |

|
| На це відповів він, і сказав: про знамення, про які ти запитуєш мене, я частково можу сказати тобі, а про життя твоє я не посланий говорити з тобою, та й не знаю. | He answered me, and said, As for the tokens whereof thou askest me, I may tell thee of them in part: but as touching thy life, I am not sent to show thee; for I do not know it. |

|
| Про знамення: ось, настануть дні, в які багато хто з тих, що живуть на землі, які володіють віданням, будуть захоплені, і шлях істини сховається, і вселенна збідніє вірою, | Nevertheless as concerning the tokens, behold, the days shall come, that they that dwell upon earth shall be taken with great amazement, and the way of truth shall be hidden, and the land shall be barren of faith. |

|
| і примножиться неправда, яку тепер ти бачиш і про яку здавна чув. | But iniquity shall be increased above that which now thou seest, or that thou hast heard long ago. |
|

|
| І буде, що країна, яку ти тепер бачиш панівною, піддасться спустошенню. | And the land, that thou seest now to have rule, shall be waste and untrodden, and men shall see it desolate. |
|

|

|
| А якщо Всевишній дасть тобі дожити, то побачиш, що після третьої труби раптово засяє серед ночі сонце і місяць тричі на день; | But if the Most High grant thee to live, thou shalt see that which is after the third kingdom to be troubled; and the sun shall suddenly shine forth in the night, and the moon in the day: |

| і з дерева буде капати кров, камінь подасть голос свій, і народи похитнуться. | and blood shall drop out of wood, and the stone shall give its voice, and the peoples shall be troubled; and their goings shall be changed: |

| Тоді буде царювати той, якого ті, що живуть на землі, не очікують, і птахи перелетять на інші місця. | and he shall rule, whom they that dwell upon the earth look not for, and the fowls shall take their flight away together: |
|

|

|
| Море Содомське вивергне риб, буде подавати вночі голос, невідомий для багатьох; однак же усі почують голос його. | and the Sodomitish sea shall cast out fish, and make a noise in the night, which many have not known: but all shall hear the voice thereof. |
|

|

|
| Буде сум’яття у багатьох місцях, часто буде посилатися з неба вогонь; дикі звірі перемінять місця свої, і нечисті жінки будуть народжувати чудовиськ. | There shall be chaos also in many places, and the fire shall be often sent out, and the wild beasts shall change their places, and women shall bring forth monsters: |

| Солодкі води зробляться солоними, і всі друзі повстануть одне проти одного; тоді сховається розум, і розуміння відійде у своє сховище. | and salt waters shall be found in the sweet, and all friends shall destroy one another; then shall wit hide itself, and understanding withdraw itself into its chamber; |

|
| Багато хто буде шукати його, але не знайде, і збільшиться на землі неправда і нестриманість. | and it shall be sought of many, and shall not be found: and unrighteousness and incontinency shall be multiplied upon earth. |
|

|
| Одна область буде запитувати іншу сусідню: «чи не проходила по тобі правда, яка робить праведним?» І та скаже: «ні». | One land also shall ask another, and say, Is righteousness, is a man that doeth righteousness, gone through thee? And it shall say, No. |

|
| Люди у той час будуть сподіватися, і не досягнуть бажаного, будуть трудитися, і не управляться путі їхні. | And it shall come to pass at that time that men shall hope, but shall not obtain: they shall labor, but their ways shall not prosper. |
|

| Про ці знамення мені дозволено сказати тобі, і якщо знову помолишся і поплачеш, як тепер, і попостишся сім днів, то почуєш ще більше за те. | To show thee such tokens I have leave; and if thou wilt pray again, and weep as now, and fast seven days, thou shalt hear yet greater things than these. |

| І я отямився, і тіло моє сильно тремтіло, і душа моя знемогла, ніби зникала. | Then I awoke, and an extreme trembling went through my body, and my mind was troubled, so that it fainted. |

| Але ангел, який прийшов до мене, підтримав мене й укріпив мене, і поставив на ноги. | So the angel that was come to talk with me held me, comforted me, and set me up upon my feet. |
|

|
| І було, у другу ніч прийшов до мене Салафиїл, вождь народу, і запитав мене: де ти був, і від чого лице твоє таке сумне? | And in the second night it came to pass, that Phaltiel the captain of the people came unto me, saying, Where hast thou been? and why is thy countenance sad? |

| Хіба не знаєш, що тобі довірений Ізраїль у країні переселення його? | or knowest thou not that Israel is committed unto thee in the land of their captivity? |
|

|
| Отже, встань і споживи хліба, і не залишай нас, як пастир свого стада, у руках лукавих вовків. | Up then, and eat some bread, and forsake us not, as the shepherd that leaveth in the hands of cruel wolves. |
|

|
| Тоді сказав я йому: відійди від мене, і не наближайся до мене. І він, почувши це, відійшов від мене. | Then said I unto him, Go thy ways from me, and come not nigh me for seven days, and then shalt thou come unto me. And he heard what I said, and went from me. |
|

|
| А я сім днів постився, стогнучи і плачучи, як повелів мені ангел Уриїл. | And so I fasted seven days, mourning and weeping, like as Uriel the angel commanded me. |
|

|
| І після семи днів помисли серця мого знову були для мене вкрай обтяжливими; | And after seven days, so it was, that the thoughts of my heart were very grievous unto me again, |
|

|
| але душа моя отримала дух розуміння, і я знову почав говорити перед Всевишнім | and my soul recovered the spirit of understanding, and I began to speak words before the Most High again, |
|

|
| і сказав: о, Владико Господи! Ти з усіх лісів на землі і з усіх дерев на ній обрав тільки одну виноградну лозу; | and said, O Lord that bearest rule, of all the woods of the earth, and of all the trees thereof, thou hast chosen thee one vine: |

|
| Ти з усього кола земного обрав Собі одну печеру, і з усіх квітів у вселенній Ти обрав Собі одну лілею; | and of all the lands of the world thou hast chosen thee one country: and of all the flowers of the world thou hast chosen thee one lily: |
|

|
| Ти з усіх безодень морських наповнив для Себе одне джерело, а з усіх побудованих міст освятив для Себе один Сион. | and of all the depths of the sea thou hast filled thee one river: and of all built cities thou hast hallowed Zion unto thyself: |
|

| З усіх створених птахів Ти найменував для Себе одну голубицю, і з усіх створених тварин Ти обрав Собі одну вівцю; | and of all the fowls that are created thou hast named thee one dove: and of all the cattle that are made thou hast provided thee one sheep: |

| із усіх численних народів Ти придбав Собі один народ, і полюбив його, дав йому закон довершений. | and among all the multitudes of peoples thou hast gotten thee one people: and unto this people, whom thou lovedst, thou gavest a law that is approved of all. |
|

|
| Але нині, Господи, чому ж Ти віддав одного багатьом, і на одному корені Ти насадив інші паростки і розсіяв Твій єдиний народ між багатьма народами? | And now, O Lord, why hast thou given this one people over unto many, and hast dishonored the one root above others, and hast scattered thine only one among many? |

| І потоптали його супротивники, які обітницям Твоїм і завітам Твоїм не вірували. | And they that did gainsay thy promises have trodden them down that believed thy covenants. |
|

|
| І якщо вже Ти сильно зненавидів народ Твій, те нехай би він Твоїми руками карався. | If thou dost so much hate thy people, they should be punished with thine own hands. |
|

|
| Коли я промовляв слова ці, посланий був до мене ангел, який приходив до мене раніше уночі, | Now when I had spoken these words, the angel that came to me the night afore was sent unto me, |
|

|

|
| і сказав мені: послухай мене, і я навчу тебе; слухай мене, і я скажу тобі ще більше. | and said unto me, Hear me, and I will instruct thee; hearken unto me, and I shall tell thee more. |
|

|
| Говори, сказав я, господарю мій. І він сказав мені: ти занадто далеко зайшов допитливістю розуму твого про Ізраїль; невже ти більше любиш його, ніж Той, Який створив його? | And I said, Speak on, my Lord. Then said he unto me, Thou art sore troubled in mind for Israel’s sake: lovest thou that people better than he that made them? |

| Ні, господарю мій, відповів я, але говорив від великої скорботи. Нутрощі мої мучать мене весь час, коли я намагаюся осягнути шлях Всевишнього і зрозуміти хоч частину суду Його. | And I said, No, Lord: but of very grief have I spoken: for my heart tormenteth me every hour, while I labor to comprehend the way of the Most High, and to seek out part of his judgment. |

| Він відповів: не можеш. Чому ж, господарю мій? — запитав я. Краще б я не народився, й утроба материнська зробилася для мене гробом, ніж бачити гноблення Якова і виснаження роду Ізраїльського. | And he said unto me, Thou canst not. And I said, Wherefore, Lord, or whereunto was I born? or why was not my mother’s womb then my grave, that I might not have seen the travail of Jacob, and the wearisome toil of the stock of Israel? |

| І він сказав мені: обчисли мені те, що ще не прийшло, і збери мені розсіяні краплі, й оживи засохлі квіти; | And he said unto me, Number me them that are not yet come, gather me together the drops that are scattered abroad, make me the flowers green again that are withered, |

| відкрий закриті сховища і виведи мені закриті у них вітри, і покажи мені образ голосу: і тоді я покажу тобі те, що ти намагаєшся бачити. | open me the chambers that are closed, and bring me forth the winds that in them are shut up, or show me the image of a voice: and then I will declare to thee the travail that thou askest to see. |

| Владико Господи! — відповів я, — хто може знати це, хіба тільки той, хто не живе з людьми? | And I said, O Lord that bearest rule, who may know these things, but he that hath not his dwelling with men? |

| А я безумний, і як можу говорити про те, про що Ти запитав мене? | As for me, I am unwise: how may I then speak of these things whereof thou askest me? |
|

|
40
|
| Тоді Він сказав мені: як ти не можеш зробити нічого зі сказаного, так не можеш пізнати провидіння Мого, ні межі любови, яку обіцяв Я народу. — | Then said he unto me, Like as thou canst do none of these things that I have spoken of, even so canst thou not find out my judgment, or the end of the love that I have promised unto my people. |

| Але ось, Господи, Ти близький до тих, які наближаються до кінця, і що будуть робити ті, які раніше мене були, або ми, або які після нас будуть? | And I said, But, lo, O Lord, thou hast made the promise unto them that be in the end: and what shall they do that have been before us, or we that are now, or they that shall come after us? |

| Він сказав мені: до вінця уподібню я суд Мій; як немає запізнення останніх, так і прискорення перших. | And he said unto me, I will liken my judgment unto a ring: like as there is no slackness of them that are last, even so there is no swiftness of them that are first. |

| Відповів я і сказав: чи не міг би Ти з’єднати в єдине як тих, які створені були раніше, так і тих, які існують і які будуть, щоб скоріше оголосити їм суд Твій? | So I answered and said, Couldest thou not make them to be at once that have been made, and that be now, and that are to come; that thou mightest show thy judgment the sooner? |

| Він відповів мені: не може прискорити творіння Творця свого, ні вік цей не може вмістити у собі всіх разом, які повинні бути створені. | Then answered he me, and said, The creature may not hasten above the creator; neither may the world hold them at once that shall be created therein. |

| І сказав я: як же Ти сказав рабу Твоєму, що Ти дав життя створеному творінню вкупі, і однак творіння витримало це; тому могли б понести і ті, що нині існують, вкупі. | And I said, How hast thou said unto thy servant, that thou wilt surely make alive at once the creature that thou hast created? If therefore they shall be alive at once, and the creature shall sustain them: even so it might now also support them to be present at once. |

| Він сказав мені: запитай жінку, і скажи їй: «якщо ти народжуєш десять, то чому народжуєш за часом?», і проси її, щоб вона народила десять разом. | And he said unto me, Ask the womb of a woman, and say unto her, If thou bringest forth ten children, why doest thou it at several times? pray her therefore to bring forth ten children at once. |

| Я ж сказав Йому: неможливо це, але має бути за часом. | And I said, she cannot: but must do it by distance of time. |

| Тоді Він сказав мені: і Я дав надрам землі здатність посіяне на ній вирощувати за часом. | Then said he unto me, Even so have I given the womb of the earth to those that be sown therein in their several times. |
|

|
| Як немовля не може робити того, що властиво старцям, так Я упорядкував створений Мною вік. | For like as a young child may not bring forth, neither she that is grown old bring forth anymore, even so have I disposed the world which I created. |
|

|

|
| Тоді я запитав Його і сказав: коли Ти відкрив мені путь, то дозволь мені сказати Тобі: мати наша, про яку Ти говорив мені, чи молода ще, чи наближається до старости? | And I asked, and said, Seeing thou hast now shown me the way, I will speak before thee: Is our mother, of whom thou hast told me, still young? or doth she now draw nigh unto age? |

| Запитай про це ту, яка народжує, і вона скаже тобі. | He answered me, and said, Ask a woman that beareth children, and she shall tell thee. |

| Скажи їй: «чому народжені тобою нині не подібні до тих, які народжені були колись, але менші за них на зріст?» | Say unto her, wherefore are not they whom thou hast now brought forth like those that were before, but less of stature? |

| І вона скаже тобі: «одні народжені мною у міцності молодої сили, а інші народжені на старість, коли утроба почала втрачати свою силу». | And she also shall answer thee, They that are born in the strength of youth are of one fashion, and they that are born in the time of age, when the womb faileth, are otherwise. |

| Розміркуй же ти: ви тепер менші за станом, ніж ті, які були перед вами; | Consider therefore thou also, how that ye are less of stature than those that were before you. |
|

|
| і ті, які після вас народяться, будуть ще менші за вас, тому що творіння уже постаріло, і сила юнака уже минула. | And so are they that come after you less than ye, as born of the creature which now beginneth to be old, and is past the strength of youth. |
|

|
| І сказав я: якщо я придбав благовоління перед очима Твоїми, покажи рабові Твоєму, через кого Ти відвідуєш творіння Твоє? | Then said I, Lord, I beseech thee, if I have found favor in thy sight, show thy servant by whom thou visitest thy creature. |

| І сказав Він мені: від початку творіння кола земного і раніше ніж установлені були межі віку, і раніше ніж подули вітри; | And he said unto me, In the beginning, when the earth was made, before the outgoings of the world were fixed, or ever the gatherings of the winds blew, |
|

|

|
| раніше ніж почутий був голос грому, раніше ніж заблищала блискавка, раніше ніж утвердилися основи раю; | before the voices of the thunder sounded and before the flashes of the lightning shone, or ever the foundations of paradise were laid, |
|

|
3
|
| раніше ніж з’явилися прекрасні квіти, раніше ніж утвердилися сили рухів, і раніше ніж зібралися незліченні воїнства ангелів; | before the fair flowers were seen, or ever the powers of the earthquake were established, before the innumerable hosts of angels were gathered together, |
|

|
4
|
| раніше ніж піднялися висоти повітряні, раніше ніж визначилися міри тверді, раніше ніж запалали вогні на Сионі; | or ever the heights of the air were lifted up, before the measures of the firmament were named, or ever the footstool of Zion was established, |
|

|
| раніше ніж досліджені були літа, і відокремлені ті, які грішать нині, і відзначені ті, які зберігали віру, як скарб: | and ere the present years were sought out, and or ever the imaginations of them that now sin were estranged, before they were sealed that have gathered faith for a treasure: |

|
| тоді Я помислив, і створено було все Мною одним, а не через будь-кого іншого; від Мене також прийде і кінець, а не від будь-кого іншого. | then did I consider these things, and they all were made through me alone, and through none other: as by me also they shall be ended, and by none other. |

| Тоді я відповів: який поділ часів, і коли буде кінець першого і початок останнього? | Then answered I and said, what shall be the parting asunder of the times? or when shall be the end of the first, and the beginning of it that followeth? |
|

|
| Від Авраама навіть до Ісаака, коли народилися від нього Яків та Ісав, рука Якова тримала від початку п’яту́ Ісава. | And he said unto me, From Abraham unto Abraham, inasmuch as Jacob and Esau were born of him, for Jacob’s hand held the heel of Esau from the beginning. |

| Кінець цього віку — Ісав, а початок наступного — Яків. | For Esau is the end of this world, and Jacob is the beginning of it that followeth. |
|

|
| Рука людини — початок її, а кінець — п’ята її. Про інше, Ездро, не запитуй Мене. | The beginning of a man is his hand, and the end of a man is his heel; between the heel and the hand seek thou nought else, Ezra. |
|

|
| Я ж у відповідь сказав Йому: о, Владико Господи! якщо я знайшов благодать перед очима Твоїми, | I answered then and said, O Lord that bearest rule, If I have found favor in thy sight, |
|

|
| молю Тебе, покажи рабові Твоєму кінець знамень Твоїх, частину яких показав Ти мені минулої ночі. | I beseech thee, show thy servant the end of thy tokens, whereof thou showedst me part the last night. |
|

|
13
|
| Він відповів мені і сказав: встань на ноги твої, і слухай голос, сповнений шуму, | So he answered and said unto me, Stand up upon thy feet, and thou shalt hear a mighty sounding voice; |
|
14
|
14
|
| і буде ніби землетрус, але місце, на якому ти стоїш, не захитається. | and if the place whereon thou standest be greatly moved, |
|
15
|
15
|
| Тому, коли буде говорити, ти не жахайся; бо про кінець буде слово, і основи землі маються на увазі. | when it speaketh be thou not afraid: for the word is of the end, and the foundations of the earth shall understand, |
|
16
|
16
|
| А оскільки йдеться про них самих, то земля затремтить і похитнеться, бо знає, що кінець їх повинен змінитися. | that the speech is of them: they shall tremble and be moved: for they know that their end must be changed. |
|

|
17
|
| І було, коли я почув голос, встав на ноги мої, і чув, і ось голос, який говорить, і шум його, як шум вод многих, | And it happened, that when I had heard it I stood up upon my feet, and hearkened, and, behold, there was a voice that spake, and the sound of it was like the sound of many waters. |
|

|

|
| і сказав: ось, настають дні, коли Я почну наближатися, щоб відвідати тих, що живуть на землі, | And it said, Behold, the days come, and it shall be that when I draw nigh to visit them that dwell upon the earth, |
|

19
|
| коли почну Я стягувати з тих, які неправдою своєю зробили неправедно велику шкоду, і коли виповниться міра приниження Сиону. | and when I shall make inquisition of them that have done hurt unjustly with their unrighteousness, and when the affliction of Zion shall be fulfilled, |
|

|
20
|
| А коли назнаменується вік, який почне проходити, то ось знамення, які Я покажу: книги розкриються перед лицем тве́рди, й усі разом побачать; | and when the seal shall be set upon the world that is to pass away, then will I show these tokens: the books shall be opened before the firmament, and all shall see together: |
|

|
| і однолітні немовлята заговорять своїми голосами, і вагітні жінки будуть народжувати недозрілих немовлят через три і чотири місяці, і вони залишаться живими і зміцняться; | and the children of a year old shall speak with their voices, the women with child shall bring forth untimely children at three or four months, and they shall live, and dance. |

|
| засіяні поля раптово стануть ніби незасіяними, і повні житниці виявляться порожніми; | And suddenly shall the sown places appear unsown, the full storehouses shall suddenly be found empty: |
|

|
| потім засурмить труба з шумом, і коли почують її, всі раптово жахнуться. | and the trumpet shall give a sound, which when every man heareth, they shall be suddenly afraid. |
|
24
|
24
|
| І буде у той час, озброяться друзі проти друзів, як вороги, й устрашиться земля з тими, що живуть на ній, і жи́ли джерел зупиняться і три години не будуть текти. | At that time shall friends make war one against another like enemies, and the earth shall stand in fear with those that dwell therein, the springs of the fountains shall stand still, so that for three hours they shall not run. |

| Усякий, хто після всього цього, про що Я передрік тобі, залишиться у живих, сам спасеться, і побачить спасіння Моє і кінець вашого віку. | And it shall be that whosoever remaineth after all these things that I have told thee of, he shall be saved, and shall see my salvation, and the end of my world. |
|

|
| І побачать люди обрані, які не зазнали смерти від народження свого, і зміниться серце тих, що живуть, і перетвориться на почуття інше. | And they shall see the men that have been taken up, who have not tasted death from their birth: and the heart of the inhabitants shall be changed, and turned into another meaning. |
|

|
27
|
| Бо зло знищиться, і зникне лукавство; | For evil shall be blotted out, and deceit shall be quenched; |
|

|
28
|
| процвіте віра, переможене буде розтління, явиться істина, яка стільки часу залишалася без плоду. | and faith shall flourish, and corruption shall be overcome, and the truth, which hath been so long without fruit, shall be declared. |
|

|
29
|
| Коли Він говорив, я глянув на того, перед яким стояв. | And when he talked with me, behold, by little and little the place whereon I stood rocked to and fro. |
|
30
|
30
|
| І він сказав мені: я прийшов показати тобі час грядущої ночі. | And he said unto me, These things came I to show thee this night. |
|

|
31
|
| Отже, якщо ти знову помолишся і знову сім днів будеш поститися, то я покажу тобі більше у день, в який я почув тебе. | If therefore thou wilt pray yet again, and fast seven days more, I shall yet tell thee greater things than these. |
|

|
| Голос твій почутий у Всевишнього; побачив Сильний правильну дію, побачив і чистоту, яку зберігав ти від юности твоєї. | For thy voice hath surely been heard before the Most High: for the Mighty hath seen thy righteous dealing, he hath seen aforetime also thy chastity, which thou hast had ever since thy youth. |

| Тому Він послав мене показати тобі все це і сказати: уповай і не бійся; | And therefore hath he sent me to show thee all these things, and to say unto thee, Be of good comfort, and fear not. |
|

|
| не поспішай у перші часи помишляти суєтне, щоб не судити тобі з таким самим поспіхом про часи останні. | And be not hasty in regard of the former times, to think vain things, that thou mayest not hasten in the latter times. |
|

|
| Після цього я знову зі сльозами молився, і також постився сім днів, щоб виконати три седмиці, заповідані мені. | And it came to pass after this, that I wept again, and fasted seven days in like manner, that I might fulfill the three weeks which he told me. |
|

|
| У восьму ж ніч серце моє прийшло знову у збудження, і я почав говорити перед Всевишнім, | And in the eighth night was my heart vexed within me again, and I began to speak before the Most High. |
|

|
| бо дух мій запалав сильно, і душа моя томилася. | For my spirit was greatly set on fire, and my soul was in distress. |
|

|
38
|
| І сказав я: Господи! Ти від початку творіння говорив; у перший день сказав: «нехай буде небо і земля», і слово Твоє було звершеним ділом. | And I said, O Lord, of a truth thou spakest at the beginning of the creation, upon the first day, and saidst thus: Let heaven and earth be made; and thy word perfected the work. |

| Тоді носився Дух, і темрява облягала навколо і мовчання: звуку людського голосу ще не було. | And then was the spirit hovering, and darkness and silence were on every side; the sound of man’s voice was not yet. |

|
| Тоді повелів Ти зі скарбниць Твоїх вийти яскравому світлу, щоб явилося діло Твоє. | Then commandedst thou a ray of light to be brought forth of thy treasures, that then thy works might appear. |
|

|
| У другий день створив Ти дух тверди і повелів йому відокремити і зробити поділ між водами, щоб деяка частина їх піднялася вгору, а інша залишилася внизу. | Upon the second day again thou madest the spirit of the firmament and commandedst it to part asunder, and to make a division between the waters, that the one part might go up, and the other remain beneath. |

| У третій день Ти повелів водам зібратися на сьомій частині землі, а шість частин висушив, щоб вони служили перед Тобою для засівання й оброблення. | Upon the third day thou didst command that the waters should be gathered together in the seventh part of the earth: six parts didst thou dry up, and keep them, to the intent that of these some being both planted and tilled might serve before thee. |

| Слово Твоє виходило, і негайно ставало ділом; | For as soon as thy word went forth the work was done. |
|

|

|
| раптово явилася безмірна кількість плодів і різноманітні приємності для смаку, квіти виглядом своїм незмінні, з запахом, невимовно запашним: усе це звершено було у третій день. | For immediately there came forth great and innumerable fruit, and manifold pleasures for the taste, and flowers of inimitable color, and odors of most exquisite smell: and this was done the third day. |

| У четвертий день Ти повелів бути сяйву сонця, світлу місяця, розташуванню зірок, | Upon the fourth day thou commandedst that the sun should shine, and the moon give its light, and the stars should be in their order: |

| і повелів, щоб вони служили людині, яка має бути створеною. | and gavest them a charge to do service unto man, that was to be made. |
|

|
47
|
| У п’ятий день Ти сказав сьомій частині, в якій була зібрана вода, щоб вона породила тварин, тих, що літають, і риб, що і сталося. | Upon the fifth day thou saidst unto the seventh part, where the water was gathered together, that it should bring forth living creatures, fowls and fish: and so it came to pass, |

| Вода німа і бездушна, за помахом Божим, породила тварин, щоб усі роди сповіщали про дивні діла Твої. | that the dumb water and without life brought forth living things as it was bidden, that the peoples might therefore praise thy wondrous works. |

| Тоді Ти зберіг двох тварин: одна називалася бегемотом, а інша левіафаном. | Then didst thou preserve two living creatures, the one thou calledst Behemoth, and the other thou calledst Leviathan: |
|

|
| І Ти відокремив їх одне від одного, бо сьома частина, де була зібрана вода, не могла прийняти їх разом. | and thou didst separate the one from the other: for the seventh part, namely, where the water was gathered together, might not hold them both. |
|

|
51
|
| Бегемоту Ти дав одну частину з землі, осушеної на третій день, нехай живе у ній, в якій тисячі гір. | Unto Behemoth thou gavest one part, which was dried up on the third day, that he should dwell in the same, wherein are a thousand hills: |

|
| Левіафану дав сьому частину водяну, і зберіг його, щоб він був споживою тим, кому Ти хочеш, і коли хочеш. | but unto Leviathan thou gavest the seventh part, namely, the moist; and thou hast kept them to be devoured of whom thou wilt, and when. |
|

|
53
|
| У шостий же день повелів Ти землі породити перед Тобою худобу, звірів і плазунів; | But upon the sixth day thou gavest commandment unto the earth, that it should bring forth before thee cattle, beasts, and creeping things: |
|

|
| а після їх Ти створив Адама, якого поставив володарем над усіма Твоїми тварями і від якого походимо всі ми і народ, який Ти обрав. | and over these Adam, whom thou ordaindest lord over all the works that thou hast made: of him come we all, the people whom thou hast chosen. |

|
| Усе це сказав я перед Тобою, Господи, тому що для нас створив Ти вік цей. | All this have I spoken before thee, O Lord, because thou hast said that for our sakes thou madest this world. |
|

|
| Про інші ж народи, які народилися від Адама, Ти сказав, що вони ніщо, але подібні до слини, і всю безліч їх Ти уподібнив краплям, що крапають із посудини. | As for the other nations, which also come of Adam, thou hast said that they are nothing, and are like unto spittle: and thou hast likened the abundance of them unto a drop that falleth from a vessel. |

| І нині, Господи, ось, ці народи, за ніщо Тобою визнані, почали володарювати над нами і пожирати нас. | And now, O Lord, behold these nations, which are reputed as nothing, be lords over us, and devour us. |
|

|
| Ми ж, народ Твій, який Ти назвав Твоїм первістком, єдинородним, улюбленим Твоїм, віддані у руки їх. | But we thy people, whom thou hast called thy firstborn, thy only begotten, and thy fervent lover, are given into their hands. |

| Якщо для нас створений вік цей, то чому не одержуємо ми спадщини з віком? І доки це? | If the world now be made for our sakes, why do we not possess for an inheritance our world? How long shall this endure? |

| Коли я закінчив говорити ці слова, посланий був до мене ангел, який посилався до мене у попередні ночі, | And when I had made an end of speaking these words, there was sent unto me the angel who had been sent unto me the nights afore: |

|
| і сказав мені: встань, Ездро, і слухай слова́, які я прийшов говорити тобі. | and he said unto me, Up, Ezra, and hear the words that I am come to tell thee. |
|

|
3
|
| Я сказав: говори, господарю мій. І він сказав мені: море розташоване у просторому місці, щоб бути глибоким і безмірним; | And I said, Speak on, my Lord. Then he said unto me, There is a sea set in a wide place, that it might be broad and vast. |
|

|
4
|
| але вхід у нього знаходиться у вузькому місці, так що подібний до рік. | But the entrance thereof shall be set in a narrow place so as to be like a river; |
|

|
5
|
| Хто побажав би ввійти у море і бачити його, або володарювати над ним, той, якщо не пройде вузьке, як може дійти до широти? | whoso then should desire to go into the sea to look upon it, or to rule it, if he went not through the narrow, how could he come into the broad? |
|

|
| Або інша подоба: місто побудоване і розташоване на рівнині, й наповнене усіма благами; | Another thing also: There is a city built and set in a plain country, and full of all good things; |
|

|
7
|
| але вхід у нього тісний і розташований на крутизні так, що праворуч вогонь, а ліворуч глибока вода. | but the entrance thereof is narrow, and is set in a dangerous place to fall, having a fire on the right hand, and on the left a deep water: |
|

|
8
|
| Між ними, тобто між вогнем і водою, лежить лише одна стежка, на якій може поміститися не більше, як тільки ступня людини. | and there is one only path between them both, even between the fire and the water, so small that there could but one man go there at once. |
|

|
9
|
| Якщо місто це буде дане у спадщину людині, то як вона одержить свою спадщину, якщо ніколи не перейде небезпеки, що лежить на шляху? | If this city now be given unto a man for an inheritance, if the heir pass not the danger before him, how shall he receive his inheritance? |
|

|
10
|
| Я сказав: так, Господи. І Він сказав мені: така і доля Ізраїля. | And I said, It is so, Lord. Then said he unto me, Even so also is Israel’s portion. |
|

|
11
|
| Для них Я створив вік; але коли Адам порушив Мої постанови, визначено було бути тому, що зроблено. | Because for their sakes I made the world: and when Adam transgressed my statutes, then was decreed that now is done. |
|

|
12
|
| І зробилися входи віку цього тісними, хворобливими, стомливими, також вузькими, лукавими, сповненими бід і які потребують великої праці. | Then were the entrances of this world made narrow, and sorrowful and toilsome: they are but few and evil, full of perils, and charged with great toils. |
|
13
|
13
|
| А входи майбутнього віку просторі, безпечні, і приносять плід безсмертя. | For the entrances of the greater world are wide and sure, and bring forth fruit of immortality. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Отже, якщо ті, що входять, які живуть, не ввійдуть у це тісне і злигоднє, вони не можуть одержати те, що уготоване. | If then they that live enter not these strait and vain things, they can never receive those that are laid up for them. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Навіщо ж засмучуєшся, коли ти тлінний, і чого бентежишся, коли смертний? | Now therefore why disquietest thou thyself, seeing thou art but a corruptible man? and why art thou moved, whereas thou art but mortal? |
|
16
|
16
|
| Навіщо прийняв ти у серці твоєму того, що майбутнє, а прийняв те, що у теперішньому? | and why hast thou not considered in thy mind that which is to come, rather than that which is present? |
|

|
17
|
| Я відповів і сказав: Владико Господи! ось, Ти визначив законом Твоїм, що праведники успадкують це, а грішники загинуть. | Then answered I and said, O Lord that bearest rule, lo, thou hast ordained in thy law, that the righteous should inherit these things, but that the ungodly should perish. |

| Праведники потерплять тісноту, сподіваючись на просторе, а ті, що нечестиво жили, хоч потерпіли тісноту, не побачать просторого. | The righteous therefore shall suffer strait things, and hope for wide: but they that have done wickedly have suffered the strait things, and yet shall not see the wide. |

| І Він сказав мені: немає судді вище за Бога, немає того, хто розуміє більше за Всевишнього. | And he said unto me, Thou art not a judge above God, neither hast thou understanding above the Most High. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Гине багато хто у цьому житті, тому що не дбає про запропонований йому закон Божий. | Yea, rather let many that now are perish, than that the law of God which is set before them be despised. |
|
21
|
21
|
| Бо суворо повелів Бог тим, що приходять, коли вони прийшли, що працюючи, вони будуть живі, і що дотримуючись, не будуть покарані. | For God straitly commanded such as came, even as they came, what they should do to live, and what they should observe to avoid punishment. |
|
22
|
22
|
| А вони не послухалися, і стали проти Нього, утвердили у собі помисел суєтний. | Nevertheless they were not obedient unto him; but spake against him, and imagined for themselves vain things; |
|
23
|
23
|
| Захопилися гріховними оманами, сказали про Всевишнього, що Його нема, не пізнали путів Його, | and framed cunning devices of wickedness; and said moreover of the Most High, that he is not; and knew not his ways: |
|
24
|
24
|
| знехтували закон Його, відкинули обітниці Його, не мали віри до обрядових установлень Його, не звершували діл Його. | but they despised his law, and denied his covenants; they have not been faithful to his statutes, and have not performed his works. |
|
25
|
25
|
| І тому, Ездро, пустим порожнє, а повним повне. | Therefore, Ezra, for the empty are empty things, and for the full are the full things. |
|

|
26
|
| Ось, прийде час, коли прийдуть знамення, які Я передрік тобі, і явиться наречена, і, являючись, покажеться, — приховувана нині землею. | For behold, the time shall come, and it shall be, when these tokens, of which I told thee before, shall come to pass, that the bride shall appear, even the city coming forth, and she shall be seen, that now is withdrawn from the earth. |

| І всякий, хто позбавиться раніше перелічених зол, сам побачить чудеса Мої. | And whosoever is delivered from the aforesaid evils, the same shall see my wonders. |
|

|
28
|
| Бо відкриється Син Мій Ісус з тими, які з Ним, і ті, що залишилися, будуть насолоджуватися чотириста років. | For my son Jesus shall be revealed with those that are with him, and they that remain shall rejoice four hundred years. |
|

|
29
|
| А після цих років помре Син Мій Христос і всі люди, які мають дихання. | After these years shall my son Christ die, and all that have the breath of life. |
|
30
|
30
|
| І повернеться вік у давнє мовчання на сім днів, подібно до того, як було раніше, так що не залишиться нікого. | And the world shall be turned into the old silence seven days, like as in the first beginning: so that no man shall remain. |
|

|
| Після ж семи днів постане вік приспаний, і помре ушкоджений. | And after seven days the world, that yet awaketh not, shall be raised up, and that shall die which is corruptible. |
|

|
32
|
| І віддасть земля тих, які у ній сплять, і прах тих, які мовчазно у ньому живуть, а сховища віддадуть ввірені їм душі. | And the earth shall restore those that are asleep in her, and so shall the dust those that dwell therein in silence, and the secret places shall deliver those souls that were committed unto them. |

|
| Тоді явиться Всевишній на престолі суду, і пройдуть біди, і закінчиться довготерпіння. | And the Most High shall be revealed upon the seat of judgment, and compassion shall pass away, and long-suffering shall be withdrawn: |
|

|
| Суд буде один, істина утвердиться, віра зміцниться. | but judgment only shall remain, truth shall stand, and faith shall wax strong: |
|
35
|
35
|
| Потім піде діло, відкриється нагорода, постане правда, перестане господарювати неправда. | and the work shall follow, and the reward shall be shown, and good deeds shall awake, and wicked deeds shall not sleep. |
|

|
36
|
| Я сказав: Авраам перший молився за содомлян; Мойсей — за батьків, які згрішили у пустелі; | And the pit of torment shall appear, and over against it shall be the place of rest: and the furnace of hell shall be shown, and over against it the paradise of delight. |
|

|
37
|
| Ісус після нього — за Ізраїля у дні Ахана; | And then shall the Most High say to the nations that are raised from the dead, See ye and understand whom ye have denied, or whom ye have not served, or whose commandments ye have despised. |
|

|
38
|
| Самуїл і Давид — за тих, кого погубляють, Соломон — за тих, які прийшли на освячення; | Look on this side and on that: here is delight and rest, and there fire and torments. Thus shall he speak unto them in the day of judgment: |
|

|
| Ілля — за тих, які прийняли дощ, і за мерця, щоб він ожив; | This is a day that hath neither sun, nor moon, nor stars; |
|
40
|
40
|
| Єзекія — за народ у дні Сеннахирима, і багато хто — за багатьох. | neither cloud, nor thunder, nor lightning; neither wind, nor water, nor air; neither darkness, nor evening, nor morning; |
|

|
41
|
| Отже, якщо тоді, коли посилилося розтління і примножилася неправда, праведні молилися за неправедних, то чому ж не бути тому і нині? | neither summer, nor spring, nor heat, nor winter; neither frost, nor cold, nor hail, nor rain, nor dew; |
|

|
42
|
| Він відповів мені і сказав: нинішній вік не є кінець; слави у ньому часто не буває, тому молилися за немічних. | neither noon, nor night, nor dawn; neither shining, nor brightness, nor light, save only the splendor of the glory of the Most High, whereby all shall see the things that are set before them: |
|

|
| День же суду буде кінцем часу цього і початком часу майбутнього безсмертя, коли мине тління, | for it shall endure as it were a week of years. |
|

|
44
|
| припиниться нестриманість, знищиться невір’я, а зросте правда, засяє істина. | This is my judgment and the ordinance thereof; but to thee only have I shown these things. |
|

|
45
|
| Тоді ніхто не зможе ні спасти загиблого, ні погубити того, хто переміг. | And I answered, I said even then, O Lord, and I say now: blessed are they that are now alive and keep the statutes ordained of thee. |
|
46
|
46
|
| Я відповів і сказав: ось моє слово перше й останнє: краще було не давати землі Адаму, або, коли вже дана, утримати його, щоб не згрішив. | But as touching them for whom my prayer was made, what shall I say? for who is there of them that are alive that hath not sinned, and who of the sons of men that hath not transgressed thy covenant? |

| Яка користь людям — у нинішньому віці жити у смутку, а після смерти очікувати покарання? | And now I see, that the world to come shall bring delight to few, but torments unto many. |
|

|
| О, що зробив ти, Адаме? Коли ти згрішив, то звершилося падіння не тебе тільки одного, але і нас, які від тебе народжуємося. | For an evil heart hath grown up in us, which hath led us astray from these statutes, and hath brought us into corruption and into the ways of death, hath shown us the paths of perdition and removed us far from life; and that, not a few only, but well nigh all that have been created. |

| Яка користь нам, якщо нам обіцяно безсмертний час, а ми чинили смертні діла? | And he answered me, and said, Hearken unto me, and I will instruct thee; and I will admonish thee yet again: |

|
| Нам передвіщена вічна надія, а ми, непотребні, зробилися суєтними. | for this cause the Most High hath not made one world, but two. |
|
51
|
51
|
| Нам уготовані оселі здоров’я і спокою, а ми жили зле; | For whereas thou hast said that the just are not many, but few, and the ungodly abound, hear the answer thereunto. |
|
52
|
52
|
| уготована слава Всевишнього, щоб покрити тих, які жили лагідно, а ми ходили путями злими. | If thou hath choice stones exceeding few, wilt thou set for thee over against them according to their number things of lead and clay? |
|
53
|
53
|
| Показаний буде рай, плід якого перебуває нетлінним і в якому спокій і зцілення; | And I said, Lord, how shall this be? |
|

|
54
|
| але ми не увійдемо в нього, тому що оберталися у місцях неплідних. | And he said unto me, Not only this, but ask the earth, and she shall tell thee; entreat her, and she shall declare unto thee. |
|
55
|
55
|
| Світліше за зірки засяють лиця тих, які мали стриманість, а наші лиця — чорніші за пітьму. | For thou shalt say unto her, Thou bringest forth gold and silver and brass, and iron also and lead and clay: |
|

|
56
|
| Ми не помишляли у житті, коли чинили беззаконня, що після смерти будемо страждати. | but silver is more abundant than gold, and brass than silver, and iron than brass, lead than iron, and clay than lead. |
|

|
57
|
| Він відповів і сказав: це — помисел про боротьбу, яку повинна вести на землі народжена людина, | Judge thou therefore which things are precious and to be desired, whatso is abundant or what is rare. |
|
58
|
58
|
| щоб, якщо буде переможена, потерпіти те, про що ти сказав, а якщо переможе, одержати те, про що Я говорю. | And I said, O Lord that bearest rule, that which is plentiful is of less worth, for that which is more rare is more precious. |
|

|
59
|
| Це те життя, про яке сказав Мойсей, коли жив, до народу, говорячи: «обери собі життя, щоб жити». | And he answered me, and said, Weigh within thyself the things that thou hast thought, for he that hath what is hard to get rejoiceth over him that hath what is plentiful. |
|

|
60
|
| Але вони не повірили йому, ні пророкам після нього, ні Мені, що говорив до них, | So also is the judgment which I have promised: for I will rejoice over the few that shall be saved, inasmuch as these are they that have made my glory now to prevail, and of whom my name is now named. |
|

|
| що не буде скорботи за погибель їх, як буде радість за тих, яким уготовано спасіння. | And I will not grieve over the multitude of them that perish; for these are they that are now like unto vapor, and are become as flame and smoke; they are set on fire and burn hotly, and are quenched. |
|

|
| Я відповів і сказав: знаю, Господи, що Всевишній називається милосердим, тому що помилує тих, які ще не прийшли у світ, | And I answered and said, O thou earth, wherefore hast thou brought forth, if the mind is made out of dust, like as all other created things? |
|

|
| і милує тих, які проводять життя у законі Його. | For it were better that the dust itself had been unborn, so that the mind might not have been made therefrom. |
|

|
64
|
| Він довготерпеливий, бо виявляє довготерпіння до тих, що згрішили, як до Свого творіння. | But now the mind groweth with us, and by reason of this we are tormented, because we perish and know it. |
|
65
|
65
|
| Він щедрий, бо готовий давати за потребою, | Let the race of men lament and the beasts of the field be glad; let all that are born lament, but let the four-footed beasts and the cattle rejoice. |
|

|
66
|
| і многомилостивий, бо примножує милості Свої до тих, що живуть нині, і до тих, що жили, і до тих, що будуть жити. | For it is far better with them than with us; for they look not for judgment, neither do they know of torments or of salvation promised unto them after death. |
|
67

67
|
| Бо, якби не примножував Він Своїх милостей, то не міг би вік продовжувати жити з тими, які живуть у ньому. | For what doth it profit us, that we shall be preserved alive, but yet be afflicted with torment? |
|
68
|
68
|
| Він подає дари; бо якби не дарував з благости Своєї, щоб полегшити тим, що зробили нечестя своїми беззаконнями, то не могла б залишатися у живих десятитисячна частина людей. | For all that are born are defiled with iniquities, and are full of sins and laden with offenses: |

|
| Він суддя, і якби не прощав тих, які створені словом Його, і не знищив безлічі злочинів, | and if after death we were not to come into judgment, peradventure it had been better for us. |
|
70
|
70
|
| можливо, з незліченної кількости залишився б тільки дуже мало хто. | And he answered me, and said, When the Most High made the world, and Adam and all them that came of him, he first prepared the judgment and the things that pertain unto the judgment. |

| Він відповів мені і сказав: цей вік Всевишній створив для багатьох, а майбутній для небагатьох. | And he answered me, and said, The Most High hath made this world for many, but the world to come for few. |
|

|

|
| Скажу тобі, Ездро, подобу. Як коли запитаєш землю, вона скаже тобі, що дає дуже багато речовини, з якої робляться глиняні речі, а не багато пороху, з якого буває золото, так і діла нинішнього віку. | I will tell thee now a similitude, Ezra; As when thou asketh the earth, it shall say unto thee, that it giveth very much mold whereof earthen vessels are made, and little dust that gold cometh of: even so is the course of the present world. |

| Багато хто створений, але небагато спасеться. | There are many created, but few shall be saved. |
|

|

|
| Я відповів і сказав: душе́! пожери сенс і поглинь мудрість. | And I answered and said, Swallow down understanding then, O my soul, and let my heart devour wisdom. |
|

|

|
| Бо ти обіцяла слухати, і побажала пророкувати, а тобі дано час тільки, щоб жити. | For thou art come hither without thy will, and departest when thou wouldest not: for there is given thee no longer space than only to live a short time. |
|

|
| О, Господи! невже Ти не дозволиш рабу Твоєму, щоб ми молилися перед Тобою про дарування серцю нашому сімені й розуму обробляти, щоб народився плід, яким міг би жити всякий розтлінний, хто буде носити ім’я людини? | O Lord, that art over us, suffer thy servant, that we may pray before thee, and give us seed unto our heart, and culture to our understanding, that there may come fruit of it, whereby every one shall live that is corrupt, who beareth the likeness of a man. |

| Ти єдиний, і ми єдине творіння рук Твоїх, як сказав Ти. | For thou art alone, and we all one workmanship of thy hands, like as thou hast said. |
|

|

|
| І як же нині в утробі материнській утворюється тіло, і Ти даєш члени, як зберігається Твоє творіння у вогні й воді, і як дев’ять місяців терпить у собі Твоє ж створіння Твою твар, яка у ньому створена? | Forasmuch as thou quickenest the body that is fashioned now in the womb, and givest it members, thy creature is preserved in fire and water, and nine months doth thy workmanship endure thy creature which is created in her. |

| І те, що зберігає, і те, що зберігається, і те й інше зберігаються, й утроба матері у свій час віддає те збережене, що у ній виросло. | But that which keepeth and that which is kept shall both be kept by thy keeping: and when the womb giveth up again that which hath grown in it, |

|
| Ти повелів із самих членів, тобто із сосків, давати молоко, плід сосків, | thou hast commanded that out of the parts of the body, that is to say, out of the breasts, be given milk, which is the fruit of the breasts, |
|

|
11
|
| нехай годується створене до деякого часу, а після передаси його Твоєму милосердю. | that the thing which is fashioned may be nourished for a time, and afterward thou shalt order it in thy mercy. |
|

|
12
|
| Ти виховав його Твоєю правдою, навчив його Твого закону, настановив його Твоїм розумом, | Yea, thou hast brought it up in thy righteousness, and nurtured it in thy law, and corrected it with thy judgment. |
|
13
|
13
|
| і умертвиш його, як Твоє творіння, і знову оживиш, як Твоє діло. | And thou shalt mortify it as thy creature, and quicken it as thy work. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Якщо Ти погубиш створене з таким піклуванням, то повелінню Твоєму легко влаштувати, щоб і зберігалося те, що було створено. | If therefore thou shalt lightly and suddenly destroy him who with so great labor was fashioned by thy commandment, to what purpose was he made? |
|

|
15
|
| І нині, Господи, я скажу: про всяку людину Ти більше знаєш; але скажу про народ Твій, за який уболіваю, | Now therefore I will speak; touching man in general, thou knowest best; but touching thy people will I speak, for whose sake I am sorry; |
|

|
| про спадщину Твою, за яку проливаю сльози, про Ізраїля, за якого болію серцем, про Якова, про якого тужу. | and for thine inheritance, for whose cause I mourn; and for Israel, for whom I am heavy; and for the seed of Jacob, for whose sake I am troubled; |
|

|
| Почну молитися перед Тобою за себе і за них, бо бачу гріхопадіння нас, які живуть на землі. | therefore will I begin to pray before thee for myself and for them: for I see the falls of us that dwell in the land; |
|

|

|
| Але я чув, що скоро прийде Суддя. | but I have heard the swiftness of the judgment which is to come. |
|
19
|

|
| Тому почуй мій голос, прислухайся до слів моїх, і я буду говорити перед Тобою. [Початок слів Ездри, перш ніж він був узятий.] | Therefore hear my voice, and understand my saying, and I will speak before thee. The beginning of the words of Ezra, before he was taken up. And he said, |

| Я сказав: Господи, що живеш вічно, Якого очі звернені на піднесене і небесне, | O Lord, thou that abidest forever, whose eyes are exalted, and whose chambers are in the air; |
|

|
| Якого престіл неоціненний і слава незбагненна, Якому з трепетом предстоять воїнства ангелів, що служать у вітрі і вогні, Якого слово істинне і глаголи непорушні, | whose throne is inestimable; whose glory may not be comprehended; before whom the hosts of angels stand with trembling, |

| повеління сильне і правління страшне, Якого погляд висушує безодні, гнів розплавляє гори й істина перебуває повік! | at whose bidding they are changed to wind and fire; whose word is sure, and sayings constant; whose ordinance is strong, and commandment fearful; |

| Почуй молитву раба Твого, і послухай моління створіння Твого. | whose look drieth up the depths, and whose indignation maketh the mountains to melt away, and whose truth beareth witness: |
|

|
| Доки живу, буду говорити, і доки розумію, буду відповідати. Не дивися на гріхи народу Твого, але на тих, які Тобі в істині служать; | hear, O Lord, the prayer of thy servant, and give ear to the petition of thy handiwork; |
|

|

|
| не звертай уваги на нечестиві діла язичників, але на тих, які завіти Твої зберегли серед бід; | attend unto my words, for so long as I live I will speak, and so long as I have understanding I will answer. |
|

|
| не помишляй про тих, які перед Тобою неправдиво чинили, але пом’яни тих, які, з волі Твоєї, пізнали страх; | O look not upon the sins of thy people; but on them that have served thee in truth, |
|

|
| не погубляй тих, які жили, як тварини, але споглянь на тих, які ясно навчали закону Твого; | Regard not the doings of them that deal wickedly, but of them that have kept thy covenants in affliction. |
|

|
| не прогнівайся на тих, які визнані гіршими за звірів; | Think not upon those that have walked feignedly before thee; but remember them that have willingly known thy fear. |
|

|
| але полюби тих, які завжди надіються на правду Твою і славу. | Let it not be thy will to destroy them that have lived like cattle; but look upon them that have clearly taught thy law. |
|

|

|
| Бо ми і батьки наші на такі хвороби страждаємо; | Take thou no indignation at them that are deemed worse than beasts; but love them that have always put their trust in thy glory. |
|

|
| а Ти, заради нас — грішних, назвешся милосердим. | For we and our fathers have passed our lives in ways that bring death: but thou because of us sinners art called merciful. |
|

|
| Якщо Ти побажаєш помилувати нас, то назвешся милосердим, тому що ми не маємо діл правди. | For if thou hast a desire to have mercy upon us, then shalt thou be called merciful, to us, namely, that have no works of righteousness. |
|

|

|
| Праведники ж, у яких багато діл придбано, за власні діла одержать винагороду. | For the just, who have many good works laid up with thee, shall for their own deeds receive reward. |
|

|
34
|
| Що́ є людина, щоб Ти гнівався на неї, і рід розтлінний, щоб Ти стільки засмучувався ним? | For what is man, that thou shouldest take displeasure at him? or what is a corruptible race, that thou shouldest be so bitter toward it? |

|

| Він відповів мені і сказав: справедливо ти сказав дещо, і за словами твоїми так і буде. | Then answered he me, and said, Some things hast thou spoken aright, and according unto thy words so shall it come to pass. |

| Бо істинно не помишляю Я про діла тих створінь, які згрішили, раніше смерти, раніше суду, раніше загибелі; | For indeed I will not think on the fashioning of them that have sinned, or their death, their judgment, or their destruction; |

|
| але насолоджуюся подвигами праведних, і згадую, як вони подорожували, як спасалися і намагалися заслужити нагороду. | but I will rejoice over the framing of the righteous, their pilgrimage also, and the salvation, and the reward, that they shall have. |

| Як сказав Я, так і є. | Like therefore as I have spoken, so shall it be. |

| Як хлібороб сіє на землі багато насіння і садить багато рослин, але не все посіяне збережеться з часом, і не все посаджене укоріниться, так і ті, які посіяні у віці цьому, не усі спасуться. | For as the husbandman soweth much seed upon the ground, and planteth many trees, and yet not all that is sown shall come up in due season, neither shall all that is planted take root: even so they that are sown in the world shall not all be saved. |

| Я відповів і сказав: якщо я знайшов благодать, то буду говорити. | I answered then and said, if I have found favor, let me speak before thee. |

| Як насіння хлібороба, якщо не зійде, або не прийме вчасно дощу Твого, або пошкодиться від надміру дощів, гине: | Forasmuch as the husbandman’s seed, if it come not up, seeing that it hath not received thy rain in due season, or if it be corrupted through too much rain, so perisheth; |

| так і людина, створена руками Твоїми, — і Ти називаєшся її первообразом, тому що Ти подібний до неї, для якої створив усе і яку Ти уподібнив до насіння хлібороба. | likewise man, who is formed with thy hands, and is called thine own image, because he is made like unto thee, for whose sake thou hast formed all things, even him hast thou made like unto the husbandman’s seed. |

| Він відповів мені і сказав: теперішнє теперішнім і майбутнє майбутнім. | Then answered he me, and said, Things present are for them that now be, and things to come for such as shall be hereafter. |

| що смирив себе, як пристойно тобі, і не судив про себе так, щоб багато славитися між праведними. | in that thou hast humbled thyself, as it becometh thee, and hast not judged thyself worthy to be among the righteous, so as to be much glorified. |

| Многі і гіркі біди спіткають тих, які населяють вік, останнім часом, тому що вони ходили у великій гордині. | For many grievous miseries shall befall them that in the last times dwell in the world, because they have walked in great pride. |
|

|
| А ти дбай про себе, і подібним до тебе шукай слави; | But understand thou for thyself, and of such as be like thee seek out the glory. |
|

|

|
| бо вам відкритий рай, насаджене дерево життя, призначений майбутній час, готовий достаток, побудоване місто, приготований спокій, довершена благість і довершена премудрість. | For unto you is paradise opened, the tree of life planted, the time to come is prepared, plenteousness is made ready, a city is built, and rest is allowed, goodness is perfected, wisdom being perfect beforehand. |

| Корінь зла запечатаний від вас, неміч і тління сховані від вас, і розтління біжить у пекло в забуття. | The root of evil is sealed up from you, weakness is done away from you, and death is hidden; Hades and corruption are fled into forgetfulness: |

| Минули хвороби, і наприкінці показався скарб безсмертя. | sorrows are passed away, and in the end is shown the treasure of immortality. |

| Не намагайся більше дізнатися про безліч загиблих. | Therefore ask thou no more questions concerning the multitude of them that perish. |

| Бо вони, одержавши свободу, знехтували Всевишнього, зневажили закон Його і залишили путі Його, | For when they had received liberty, they despised the Most High, thought scorn of his law, and forsook his ways. |

| а ще і праведних Його потоптали, | Moreover they have trodden down his righteous, |
|

|
| і говорили у серці своєму: «немає Бога», хоч і знали, що вони смертні. | and said in their heart, that there is no God; yea, and that knowing they must die. |
|

|
| Як на вас очікує те, про що сказано раніше, так і їх — спрага і муки, які приготовані. Бог не хотів погубити людину, | For as the things aforesaid shall receive you, so thirst and pain which are prepared shall receive them: for the Most High willed not that men should come to nought: |

|
| але самі створені знеславили ім’я Того, Хто створив їх, і були невдячними до Того, Хто наперед уготував їм життя. | but they that are created have themselves defiled the name of him that made them, and were unthankful unto him who prepared life for them. |

| Тому суд Мій нині наближається, — | And therefore is my judgment now at hand, |

| про що Я не всім відкрив, а тільки тобі і небагатьом, до тебе подібним. Я відповів і сказав: | which I have not shown unto all men, but unto thee, and a few like thee. Then answered I and said, |

| ось нині, Господи, Ти показав мені безліч знамень, які Ти почнеш творити при кончині, але не показав, у який час. | Behold, O Lord, now hast thou shown me the multitude of the wonders, which thou wilt do in the last times: but at what time, thou hast not shown me. |

| Він відповів мені і сказав: вимірюючи, вимірюй час у собі самому, і коли побачиш, що пройшла деяка частина знамень, раніше вказаних, | And he answered me, and said, Measure thou diligently within thyself: and when thou seest that a certain part of the signs are past, which have been told thee beforehand, |

| тоді зрозумієш, що це і є той час, в який почне Всевишній відвідувати вік, Ним створений. | then shalt thou understand, that it is the very time, wherein the Most High will visit the world which was made by him. |
|

|
| Коли виявиться у віці коливання місць, сум’яття народів, | And when there shall be seen in the world earthquakes, disquietude of peoples, devices of nations, wavering of leaders, disquietude of princes, |
|

|
4
|
| тоді зрозумієш, що про це говорив Всевишній від днів, що були раніше за тебе, від початку. | then shalt thou understand, that the Most High spake of these things from the days that were aforetime from the beginning. |
|

|
5
|
| Як усе, створене у віці, має початок, так само і кінець, і закінчення буває явно: | For like as of all that is made in the world, the beginning is evident, and the end manifest; |
|

|
6
|
| так і часи Всевишнього мають початки, які відкриваються чудесами і силами, і закінчення, які виявляються діями і знаменнями. | so also are the times of the Most High: the beginnings are manifest in wonders and mighty works, and the end in effects and signs. |
|

|

|
| Усякий, хто спасеться і зможе ділами своїми і вірою, якою віруєте, уникнути раніше провіщених бід, | And every one that shall be saved, and shall be able to escape by his works, or by faith, whereby he hath believed, |
|

|

|
| залишиться, і побачить спасіння Моє на землі Моїй і в межах Моїх, які Я освятив Собі від віку. | shall be preserved from the said perils, and shall see my salvation in my land, and within my borders, which I have sanctified for me from the beginning. |
|

|
| Тоді пошкодують ті, що відступили нині від шляхів Моїх, і ті, що відкинули їх із презирством, будуть перебувати у муках. | Then shall they be amazed, who now have abused my ways: and they that have cast them away despitefully shall dwell in torments. |
|

|
| Ті, які не пізнали Мене, одержуючи за життя благодіяння, | For as many as in their life have received benefits, and yet have not known me; |
|

|
| і погребували законом Моїм, не зрозуміли його, але знехтували, коли ще мали свободу і коли ще відкрито було їм місце для покаяння, | and as many as have scorned my law, while they had yet liberty, and, when as yet place of repentance was open unto them, understood not, but despised it; |

|
| ті пізнають Мене після смерти у муках. | the same must know it after death by torment. |
|

|
| Ти не цікався більше, як нечестиві будуть мучитися, але досліджуй, як спасуться праведні, яким належить вік і заради яких вік, і коли. | And therefore be thou no longer curious how the ungodly shall be punished; but inquire how the righteous shall be saved, they whose the world is, and for whom the world was created. |

| я раніше говорив, і тепер говорю, і потім буду говорити, що більше тих, які загинуть, ніж тих, які спасуться, як хвиля більша за краплю. | I have said before, and now do speak, and will speak it also hereafter, that there are more of them that perish, than of them that will be saved: |

| Він відповів мені і сказав: | like as a wave is greater than a drop. |

|
| яка нива, таке і насіння; які квіти, такі і кольори; який діяч, таке і діло; який хлібороб, такий і обробіток; бо то був час віку. | And he answered me, saying, Like as the field is, so also the seed; and as the flowers are, such are the colors also; and such as the work is, such also is the judgment thereon; and as is the husbandman, so is his threshing floor also. For there was a time in the world, |

| Коли Я уготовляв вік, перше ніж він був, для перебування тих, які живуть нині у ньому, ніхто Мені не суперечив. | even then when I was preparing for them that now live, before the world was made for them to dwell in; and then no man spake against me, |

| А нині, коли вік цей був створений, норови створених пошкодилися при жнивах, які не зменшуються, при недослідимому законі. | for there was not any: but now they that are created in this world that is prepared, both with a table that faileth not, and a law which is unsearchable, are corrupted in their manners. |
|

|
| І розглянув Я вік, і ось, виявилася небезпека від задумів, які з’явилися у ньому. | So I considered my world, and, lo, it was destroyed, and my earth, and, lo, it was in peril, because of the devices that were come into it. |
|

|
| Я побачив і пощадив його, і зберіг для Себе одну ягоду з виноградного грона й одне насадження з безлічі. | And I saw, and spared them, but not greatly, and saved me a grape out of a cluster, and a plant out of a great forest. |
|

|
| Нехай загине безліч, що дарма народилася, і збережеться ягода Моя і насадження Моє, яке Я виростив з великим трудом. | Let the multitude perish then, which was born in vain; and let my grape be saved, and my plant; for with great labor have I made them perfect. |
|

|
| А ти, коли після семи днів інших, не постячись, однак, у них, | Nevertheless if thou wilt cease yet seven days more, (howbeit thou shalt not fast in them, |
|

|
| вийдеш на квітуче поле, де немає побудованого дому, і станеш годуватися тільки від польових квітів і не споживати м’яса, ні пити вина, а тільки квіти, | but shalt go into a field of flowers, where no house is built, and eat only of the flowers of the field; and thou shalt taste no flesh, and shalt drink no wine, but shalt eat flowers only;) |

| молися до Всевишнього безперестанно, і Я прийду і буду говорити з тобою. | and pray unto the Most High continually, then will I come and talk with thee. |

|
| І пішов я, як Він сказав мені, на поле, яке називається Ардаф, і сів там у квітах і споживав від польових трав, і була мені їжа від них насиченням. | So I went my way, like as he commanded me, into the field which is called Ardat; and there I sat among the flowers, and did eat of the herbs of the field, and the meat of the same satisfied me. |

| Після семи днів лежав я на траві, і серце моє знову бентежилось, як раніше. | And it came to pass after seven days that I lay upon the grass, and my heart was vexed again, like as before: |

| І відкрилися вуста мої, і я почав говорити перед Всевишнім і сказав: | and my mouth was opened, and I began to speak before the Lord Most High, and said, |

| о, Господи! являючи Себе нам, Ти явився батькам нашим у пустелі непрохідній і неплідній, коли вони вийшли з Єгипту, | O Lord, thou didst show thyself among us, unto our fathers in the wilderness, when they went forth out of Egypt, and when they came into the wilderness, where no man treadeth and that beareth no fruit; |

| і сказав: «слухай Мене, Ізраїлю, і дослухайся до слів Моїх, сíм’я Якова. | and thou didst say, Hear me, thou Israel; and mark my words, O seed of Jacob. |

| Ось, Я сію у вас закон Мій, і принесе у вас плід, і ви будете славитися у ньому вічно». | For, behold, I sow my law in you, and it shall bring forth fruit in you, and ye shall be glorified in it forever. |
|

|
| Але батьки наші, прийнявши закон, не виконали його і постанов Твоїх не зберегли, і хоча плід закону Твого не загинув і не міг загинути, тому що був Твій, | But our fathers, who received the law, kept it not, and observed not the statutes: and the fruit of the law did not perish, neither could it, for it was thine; |

| але ті, що прийняли закон, загинули, не зберігши того, що у ньому було посіяно. | yet they that received it perished, because they kept not the thing that was sown in them. |
|

|
| Зазвичай буває, що коли земля прийняла насіння, або море корабель, або яка-небудь посудина їжу або питво, і якщо буде пошкоджене те, у чому посіяно, або те, у чому вміщено, | And, lo, it is a custom, that when the ground hath received seed, or the sea a ship, or any vessel meat or drink, and when it cometh to pass that that which is sown, or that which is launched, |

| у такому випадку гине разом і саме посіяне, або вміщене, або прийняте, і прийнятого вже не залишається перед нами. Але з нами не так. | or the things which have been received, should come to an end, these come to an end, but the receptacles remain: yet with us it hath not happened so. |

| Ми, що прийняли закон, згрішивши, загинули, так само і серце наше, яке прийняло його; | For we that have received the law shall perish by sin, and our heart also which received it. |
|

|
| Але закон не загинув, і залишається у своїй силі. | Notwithstanding the law perisheth not, but remaineth in its honor. |
|

|
| Коли я говорив це у серці моєму, я споглянув очима моїми, і побачив з правого боку жінку; і ось, вона плакала і ридала великим воланням, і сильно уболівала душею; одяг її був розідраний, а на голові її попіл. | And when I spake these things in my heart, I looked about me with mine eyes, and upon the right side I saw a woman, and, behold, she mourned and wept with a loud voice, and was much grieved in mind, and her clothes were rent, and she had ashes upon her head. |

| Тоді залишив я розмірковування, якими був зайнятий, і, звернувшись до неї, сказав їй: | Then let I my thoughts go wherein I was occupied, and turned me unto her, |

| про що плачеш ти, і чого так уболіваєш душею? | and said unto her, Wherefore weepest thou? and why art thou grieved in thy mind? |

| Вона сказала: залиш мене, господарю мій, нехай пла́чу за себе і подвою скорботу, бо я дуже засмучена душею і дуже принижена. | And she said unto me, Let me alone, my Lord, that I may bewail myself, and add unto my sorrow, for I am sore vexed in my mind, and brought very low. |

| Я запитав її: що потерпіла ти? скажи мені. І вона відповіла мені: | And I said unto her, What aileth thee? Tell me. |

|
| я була неплідна, раба твоя, і не народжувала, маючи чоловіка, тридцять років. | She said unto me, I thy servant was barren, and had no child, though I had a husband thirty years. |
|

|

|
| Кожної години, кожного дня у ці тридцять років я молила Всевишнього безперестанно, | And every hour and every day these thirty years did I make my prayer to the Most High day and night. |
|

|
45
|
| і почув мене Бог, рабу твою, після тридцяти років, побачив смирення моє, дослухався до скорботи моєї і дав мені сина, і я дуже зраділа йому, і чоловік мій, і всі співгромадяни мої, і ми багато прославляли Всевишнього. | And it came to pass after thirty years that God heard me thy handmaid, and looked upon my low estate, and considered my trouble, and gave me a son: and I rejoiced in him greatly, I and my husband, and all my neighbors: and we gave great honor unto the Mighty. |

| Я вигодувала його з великим трудом, | And I nourished him with great travail. |

|
| і коли він виріс і пішов узяти собі дружину, я влаштувала день бенкету. | So when he grew up, and I came to take him a wife, I made him a feast day. |

Chapter 10

| Але коли син мій увійшов у шлюбний чертог свій, він упав, і помер. | And it so came to pass, that when my son was entered into his wedding chamber, he fell down, and died. |
|

|
| І перекинули всі ми світильники, і всі співгромадяни мої піднялися утішати мене, і я спочила до ночі другого дня. | Then we all overthrew the lights, and all my neighbors rose up to comfort me: and I remained quiet unto the second day at night. |
|

|
| Коли ж усі перестали утішати мене, щоб залишити мене у спокої, я, уставши вночі, побігла і прийшла, як бачиш, на це поле. | And it came to pass, when they had all left off to comfort me, to the end I might be quiet, then rose I up by night, and fled, and came hither into this field, as thou seest. |

| І думаю вже не повертатися у місто, але залишатися тут, не їсти, не пити, але безперестанно плакати і поститися, доки не помру. | And I do now purpose not to return into the city, but here to stay, and neither to eat nor drink, but continually to mourn and to fast until I die. |

| Залишивши розмірковування, якими займався, я з гнівом відповів їй і сказав: | Then left I the meditations wherein I was, and answered her in anger, and said, |

| о, найбезумніша з усіх жон! чи не бачиш скорботи нашої і що сталося з нами — | Thou foolish woman above all other, seest thou not our mourning, and what hath happened unto us? |

|
| що Сион, мати наша, засмучується безмірно, вкрай принижена, і плаче гірко? | how that Zion the mother of us all is full of sorrow, and much humbled. |
|

|

|
| І тепер, коли всі ми уболіваємо і засмучуємося, тому що всі засмучені, чи будеш ти засмучуватися через одного сина твого? | It is right now to mourn very sore, seeing we all mourn, and to be sorrowful, seeing we are all in sorrow, but thou sorrowest for one son. |

| Запитай землю, і вона скаже тобі, що їй-то слід оплакувати падіння такої безлічі, що народжується на ній; | For ask the earth, and she shall tell thee, that it is she who ought to mourn for so many that grow upon her. |

| бо всі народжені з неї від початку й інші, які мають народитися, ледь не усі гинуть, і така безліч їх віддається на знищення. | For out of her all had their beginnings, and others shall come; and, behold, they walk almost all into destruction, and the multitude of them is utterly rooted out. |

| Отже, хто повинен більше засмучуватися, як не та, яка втратила таку безліч, а не ти, що уболіваєш за одного? | Who then should make more mourning, she, that hath lost so great a multitude, or thou, who art grieved but for one? |
|

| Якщо ти скажеш мені: «плач мій не подібний до плачу землі, бо я втратила плід утроби моєї, який я носила із сумом і народила у болістях; | but if thou sayest unto me, My lamentation is not like the earth’s, for I have lost the fruit of my womb, which I brought forth with pains, and bare with sorrows: |

| а земля — за властивістю землі; на ній теперішня безліч як відходить, так і приходить»: | but it is with the earth after the manner of the earth; the multitude present in it is gone, as it came: |

| і я скажу тобі, що як ти з трудом народила, так і земля дає плід свій людині, яка від початку обробляє її. | then say I unto thee, Like as thou hast brought forth with sorrow; even so the earth also hath given her fruit, namely, man, ever since the beginning unto him that made her. |

|
| Тому утримайся тепер від скорботи твоєї і мужньо перенось втрату, що трапилася у тебе. | Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thyself, and bear with a good courage the adversities which have befallen thee. |
|

|
| Бо якщо ти визнаєш праведним визначення Боже, то у свій час одержиш сина, і між дружинами будеш прославлена. | For if thou shalt acknowledge the decree of God to be just, thou shalt both receive thy son in time, and shalt be praised among women. |
|

|
| Отже, повернися у місто до чоловіка твого. | Go thy way then into the city to thy husband. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Але вона сказала: не зроблю так, не повернуся в місто, але тут помру. | And she said unto me, That will I not do: I will not go into the city, but here will I die. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Продовжуючи говорити з нею, я сказав: | So I proceeded to speak further unto her, and said, |
|
20
|
20
|
| не роби цього, але послухай пораду мою. Бо скільки бід Сиону? Утішся заради скорботи Єрусалима. | Do not so, but suffer thyself to be prevailed on by reason of the adversities of Zion; and be comforted by reason of the sorrow of Jerusalem. |

|
| Бо ти бачиш, що святилище наше спустошене, вівтар наш скинутий, храм наш зруйнований, | For thou seest that our sanctuary is laid waste, our altar broken down, our temple destroyed; |

|
| псалтир наш принижений, пісні замовкли, радість наша зникла, світло світильника нашого погасло, ковчег завіту нашого розкрадений, Святе наше осквернене, й ім’я, наречене на нас, ледь не зганьблене, діти наші потерпіли знеславлення, священики наші побиті, левити наші відведені у полон, дівчата наші осквернені, дружини наші потерпіли насильство, праведники наші захоплені, отроки наші загинули, юнаки наші у рабстві, сильні наші знемогли; | our psaltery is brought low, our song is put to silence, our rejoicing is at an end; the light of our candlestick is put out, the ark of our covenant is plundered, our holy things are defiled, and the name that is called upon us is profaned; our freemen are despitefully treated, our priests are burnt, our Levites are gone into captivity, our virgins are defiled, and our wives ravished; our righteous men carried away, our little ones betrayed, our young men are brought into bondage, and our strong men are become weak; |

| і що з усього найтяжче, знамено Сиону позбавлене слави своєї, бо віддане у руки ненависників наших. | and, what is more than all, the seal of Zion—for she hath now lost the seal of her honor, and is delivered into the hands of them that hate us. |

| Тому залиш великий сум твій, і відклади безліч скорбот, щоб помилував тебе Кріпкий, і Всевишній дарував тобі заспокоєння і полегшення трудів. | Thou therefore shake off thy great heaviness, and put away from thee the multitude of sorrows, that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again, and the Most High may give thee rest, even ease from thy travails. |

| При цих словах моїх до неї, несподівано засяяло лице і погляд її, і ось, вигляд зробився блискучим, так що я, переляканий нею, думав, що б це було. | And it came to pass, while I was talking with her, behold, her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly, and her countenance glistered like lightning, so that I was sore afraid of her, and mused what this might be; |

| Чи почуття моє обманює мене, чи душа моя марить уві сні? | Or is my sense deceived, or my soul in a dream? |

| Тому прошу тебе пояснити мені, рабові твоєму, цю несамовитість розуму мого. Відповідаючи мені, сказав він: | Now therefore I beseech thee to show thy servant concerning this trance. |

| Для цього-то я повелів тобі жити у полі, де немає дому. | and therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was built: |

| Я знав, що Всевишній покаже тобі це; | for I knew that the Most High would show this unto thee. |

| для того і повелів, щоб ти прийшов на поле, де не покладено основи дому. | Therefore I commanded thee to come into the field, where no foundation of any building was. |

|
| Бо не могла справа людського творіння існувати там, де почало показуватися місто Всевишнього. | For in the place wherein the city of the Most High was to be shown, the work of no man’s building could stand. |
|

|
| Отже, не бійся, і нехай не страшиться серце твоє, але ввійди і подивися на світлість і красу творіння, скільки можуть бачити очі твої. | Therefore fear thou not, nor let thy heart be affrighted, but go thy way in, and see the beauty and greatness of the building, as much as thine eyes are able to see: |

| і Всевишній покаже тобі видіння найвеличніших діл, які Він створить для жителів землі в останні дні. | and so shall the Most High show thee those visions in dreams, of what the Most High will do unto them that dwell upon earth in the last days. So I slept that night and another, like as he commanded me. |

|
| І бачив я: ось, він розпростирав крила свої над усією землею, й усі вітри небесні дули на нього і збиралися хмари. | And I saw, and, behold, she spread her wings over all the earth, and all the winds of heaven blew on her, and the clouds were gathered together against her. |

| І бачив я, що з пір’я його виходили інші малі пера і з тих виходили ще менші і короткі. | And I beheld, and out of her wings there grew other wings over against them; and they became little wings and small. |
|

|
| Голови його спочивали, і середня голова була більша за інші голови, але також спочивала з ними. | But her heads were at rest: the head in the midst was greater than the other heads, yet rested it with them. |
|

|
| І бачив я: ось орел літав на крилах своїх і царював над землею і над усіма жителями її. | Moreover I beheld, and, lo, the eagle flew with her wings, to reign over the earth, and over them that dwell therein. |

| І бачив я, що все піднебесне було покірне йому, і ніхто не чинив спротиву йому, жодна з тварин, що існують на землі. | And I beheld how that all things under heaven were subject unto her, and no man spake against her, no, not one creature upon earth. |

| І ось, орел став на пазурі свої і випустив голос до пір’я свого і сказав: | And I beheld, and, lo, the eagle rose upon her talons, and uttered her voice to her wings, saying, |

| не пильнуйте всі разом; спіть кожне на своєму місці, і пильнуйте по черзі, | Watch not all at once: sleep every one in his own place, and watch by course: |
|

|
| а голови нехай зберігаються на останній час. | but let the heads be preserved for the last. |
|

|
10
|
| Бачив я, що голос його виходив не з голів його, але зсередини тіла його. | And I beheld, and, lo, the voice went not out of her heads, but from the midst of her body. |
|

|
| Я порахував малі пера його; їх було вісім. | And I numbered her wings that were over against the other, and, behold, there were eight of them. |
|

|
| І ось, із правого боку піднялося одне перо і зацарювало над усією землею, | And I beheld, and, lo, on the right side there arose one wing, and reigned over all the earth; |
|

|
| і коли зацарювало, прийшов кінець його, і не видно стало місця його; потім піднялося інше перо і царювало; це володарювало довгий час. | and so it was, that when it reigned, the end of it came, and it appeared not, so that the place thereof appeared no more: and the next following rose up, and reigned, and it bare rule a great time; |

| і ось, чутно було голос, що говорить йому: | And, lo, there came a voice unto it, and said, |

| слухай ти, яке стільки часу володіло землею! ось що я сповіщаю тобі, перш ніж почнеш зникати: | Hear thou that hast borne rule over the earth all this time: this I proclaim unto thee, before thou shalt appear no more, |
|

|
| ніхто після тебе не буде володарювати стільки часу, як ти, і навіть половини того. | There shall none after thee attain unto thy time, neither unto the half thereof. |
|

|
18
|
| І піднялося третє перо і володарювало, як і попередні, але зникло і воно. | Then arose the third, and had the rule as the others before, and it also appeared no more. |
|

|
19
|
| Так було і з усіма іншими: вони володарювали і потім зникали назавжди. | So went it with all the wings one after another, as that every one bare rule, and then appeared no more. |
|

|
| Я бачив, що за часом із правого боку піднімалися наступні пера, щоб і їм мати начальство, і деякі з них начальствували, але негайно зникали; | And I beheld, and, lo, in process of time the wings that followed were set up upon the right side, that they might rule also; and some of them ruled, but within a while they appeared no more: |

| деякі ж з них піднімалися, але не одержували начальства. | some also of them were set up, but ruled not. |
|

|
| Після цього не являлися більше дванадцять пер, ні два малих пера; | After this I beheld, and, lo, the twelve wings appeared no more, nor two of the little wings: |

| і не залишилося у тілі орла нічого, крім двох голів, які спочивали, і шести малих пер. | and there was no more left upon the eagle’s body, but the three heads that rested, and six little wings. |
|

|

|
| Я бачив, і ось, із шести малих пер відокремилися два і залишилися під головою, яка була з правого боку, а чотири залишалися на своєму місці. | And I beheld, and, lo, two little wings divided themselves from the six, and remained under the head that was upon the right side: but four remained in their place. |
|

|
| Потім підкрильні пера намагалися піднятися і начальствувати; | And I beheld, and, lo, these under wings thought to set up themselves, and to have the rule. |
|

|
| і ось, одне піднялося, але негайно зникло; | And I beheld, and, lo, there was one set up, but within a while it appeared no more. |

|
| а наступні зникали ще швидше, ніж попередні. | A second also, and it was sooner away than the first. |
|

| І бачив я: ось, два пера, які залишилися, намагалися також царювати. | And I beheld, and, lo, the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign: |

|
| Коли вони намагалися, одна з голів, що спочивали, яка була середньою, пробудилася, і вона була більшою за інші дві голови. | and while they so thought, behold, there awoke one of the heads that were at rest, namely, it that was in the midst; for that was greater than the two other heads. |
|

|
| І бачив я, що дві інші голови з’єдналися з нею. | And I beheld how that it joined the two other heads with it. |
|

|
| І ця голова, повернувшись з тими, які були з’єднані з нею, пожерла два підкрильних пера, які намагалися царювати. | And, behold, the head was turned with them that were with it, and did eat up the two under wings that thought to have reigned. |
|

|
| Ця голова настрашила всю землю і володарювала над жителями землі з великим гнобленням, і утримувала владу на земній кулі більше всіх крил, які були. | But this head held the whole earth in possession, and bare rule over those that dwell therein with much oppression; and it had the governance of the world more than all the wings that had been. |

| Після того я бачив, що і середня голова несподівано зникла, як і крила; | And after this I beheld, and, lo, the head also that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more, like as the wings. |

| залишалися дві голови, які подібним чином царювали на землі і над її жителями. | But there remained the two heads, which also in like sort reigned over the earth, and over those that dwell therein. |
|

|

|
| І ось, голова з правого боку пожерла ту, яка була з лівого. | And I beheld, and, lo, the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side. |
|

|

|
| І чув я голос, який говорить мені: дивися перед собою, і розмірковуй про те, що бачиш. | Then I heard a voice, which said unto me, Look before thee, and consider the thing that thou seest. |
|

|
37
|
| І бачив я: ось, ніби лев, який вибіг з лісу і рикає, випустив людський голос до орла і сказав: | And I beheld, and, lo, as it were a lion roused out of the wood roaring: and I heard how that he sent out a man’s voice unto the eagle, and spake, saying, |
|

|
38
|
| слухай, що я буду говорити тобі і що скаже тобі Всевишній: | Hear thou, I will talk with thee, and the Most High shall say unto thee, |
|

|
39
|
| чи не ти той, що залишився з числа чотирьох тварин, яких Я поставив царювати у віці Моєму, щоб через них прийшов кінець часів тих? | Art not thou it that remainest of the four beasts, whom I made to reign in my world, that the end of my times might come through them? |
|
40
|
40
|
| І четверта з них прийшла, перемогла всіх тварин, які були раніше, і тримала вік у великому трепеті і всю вселенну у лютому гнобленні, і з найтяжчим утиском підвладних, і дуже довгий час жила на землі з підступництвом. | And the fourth came, and overcame all the beasts that were past, and held the world in governance with great trembling, and the whole compass of the earth with grievous oppression; and so long time dwelt he upon the earth with deceit. |

| Ти судив землю не за правдою; | And thou hast judged the earth, but not with truth. |
|
42
|
42
|
| ти утискував лагідних, кривдив миролюбних, любив неправдомовців, розоряв житла тих, які приносили користь, і руйнував стіни тих, які не робили тобі шкоди. | For thou hast afflicted the meek, thou hast hurt the peaceable, thou hast hated them that speak truth, thou hast loved liars, and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit, and cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm. |

|
| І зійшла до Всевишнього образа твоя, і гординя твоя — до Кріпкого. | Therefore is thy insolent dealing come up unto the Most High, and thy pride unto the Mighty. |
|
44
|
44
|
| І споглянув Всевишній на часи гордині, і ось, вони закінчилися, і виповнилася міра злодійств її. | The Most High also hath looked upon his times, and, behold, they are ended, and his ages are fulfilled. |
|

|

|
| Тому зникни ти, орле, зі страшними крилами твоїми, з мерзотними перами твоїми, зі злими головами твоїми, з жорстокими пазурами твоїми і з усім негідним тілом твоїм, | And therefore appear no more, thou eagle, nor thy horrible wings, nor thy evil little wings, nor thy cruel heads, nor thy hurtful talons, nor all thy vain body: |

| щоб відпочила вся земля і звільнилася від твого насильства, і надіялася на суд і милосердя свого Творця. | that all the earth may be refreshed, and be eased, being delivered from thy violence, and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her. |

|
| Коли лев говорив до орла ці слова, я побачив, | And it came to pass, while the lion spake these words unto the eagle, I beheld, |
|

|
| що не з’являлася більше голова, яка залишалася разом з чотирма крилами, які перейшли до неї і піднімалися, щоб царювати, але царство яких було слабке і повне збурювань. | and, lo, the head that remained appeared no more, and the two wings which went over unto it arose and set themselves up to reign, and their kingdom was small, and full of uproar. |

| І я бачив, і ось вони зникли, і все тіло орла згорало, і жахнулася земля, і я від тривоги, несамовитости розуму і від великого страху прокинувся і сказав духу моєму: | And I beheld, and, lo, they appeared no more, and the whole body of the eagle was burnt, so that the earth was in great fear: then awoke I by reason of great ecstasy of mind, and from great fear, and said unto my spirit, |

| ось, ти заподіяв мені це тим, що випробовуєш путі Всевишнього. | Lo, this hast thou done unto me, in that thou searchest out the ways of the Most High. |

| Ось, я ще тремчу серцем і дуже знеміг духом моїм, і немає у мені ніскільки сили від великого страху, яким я уражений у цю ніч. | Lo, I am yet weary in my mind, and very weak in my spirit; nor is there the least strength in me, for the great fear wherewith I was affrighted this night. |

| Отже, нині я помолюся Всевишньому, щоб Він укріпив мене до кінця. | Therefore will I now beseech the Most High, that he will strengthen me unto the end. |
|

|
| І сказав я: Владико Господи! якщо я знайшов благодать перед очима Твоїми, якщо Ти знайшов мене праведним перед багатьма, і якщо молитва моя справді зійшла перед лице Твоє, | And I said, O Lord that bearest rule, if I have found favor in thy sight, and if I am justified with thee above many others, and if my prayer indeed be come up before thy face; |

| укріпи мене і покажи мені, рабові Твоєму, значення цього страшного видіння, щоб цілком заспокоїти душу мою: | strengthen me then, and show me thy servant the interpretation and plain meaning of this fearful vision, that thou mayest perfectly comfort my soul. |

|
| бо Ти судив мене гідним, щоб показати мені останні часи. І Він сказав мені: | For thou hast judged me worthy to show me the end of time and the last times. |
|

|
| таке значення видіння цього: | And he said unto me, This is the interpretation of this vision which thou sawest: |

|
| орел, якого ти бачив, що піднімався від моря, є царство, показане у видінні Даниїлові, братові твоєму; | The eagle, whom thou sawest come up from the sea, is the fourth kingdom which appeared in vision to thy brother Daniel. |

| але йому не було пояснено те, що нині Я пояснюю тобі. | But it was not expounded unto him, as I now expound it unto thee or have expounded it. |
|

|

|
| Ось, приходять дні, коли постане на землі царство більш страшне, ніж усі царства, які були раніше нього. | Behold, the days come, that there shall rise up a kingdom upon earth, and it shall be feared above all the kingdoms that were before it. |
|

|

|
| У ньому будуть царювати, один після одного, дванадцять царів. | In the same shall twelve kings reign, one after another: |
|
15
|
15
|
| Другий з них почне царювати, і утримає владу більш тривалий час, ніж інші дванадцять. | whereof the second shall begin to reign, and shall have a longer time than any of the twelve. |
|

|
| Таке значення дванадцяти крил, бачених тобою. | This is the interpretation of the twelve wings, which thou sawest. |
|

|
| А що ти чув голос, який говорив, що виходив не від голів орла, але зсередини тіла його, | And whereas thou heardest a voice which spake, not going out from the heads, but from the midst of the body thereof, this is the interpretation: |
|

|
| це означає, що після часу того царства відбудуться чималі чвари, і царство буде піддане небезпеці падіння; але воно не впаде тоді і відновиться у первісному стані своєму. | That after the time of that kingdom there shall arise no small contentions, and it shall stand in peril of falling: nevertheless it shall not then fall, but shall be restored again to its first estate. |

| А що ти бачив вісім малих підкрильних пер, з’єднаних із крилами, це означає, | And whereas thou sawest the eight under wings sticking to her wings, this is the interpretation: |

|
| що постануть у царстві вісім царів, часи яких будуть легкі і роки швидкоплинні, і два з них загинуть. | That in it there shall arise eight kings, whose times shall be but small, and their years swift. |
|

|

|
| Коли буде наближатися середній час, чотири збережуться до того часу, коли буде близький кінець його; а два збережуться до кінця. | And two of them shall perish, when the middle time approacheth: four shall be kept for a while until the time of the ending thereof shall approach: but two shall be kept unto the end. |

|
| А що ти бачив три голови, які спочивають, це означає, | And whereas thou sawest three heads resting, this is the interpretation: |

| що в останні дні царства Всевишній воздвигне три царства і підкорить їм багато інших, і вони будуть володарювати над землею і жителями її | In the last days thereof shall the Most High raise up three kingdoms, and renew many things therein, and they shall bear rule over the earth, |

|
| з більшим утиском, ніж усі, що були раніше; тому вони і названі головами орла, | and over those that dwell therein, with much oppression, above all those that were before them: therefore are they called the heads of the eagle. |
|

|
| бо саме вони довершать беззаконня його і покладуть кінець йому. | For these are they that shall accomplish her wickedness, and that shall finish her last end. |

|
| А що ти бачив, що велика голова не з’являлася більше, це означає, що один з царів помре на постелі своїй, втім, з муками, | And whereas thou sawest that the great head appeared no more, it signifieth that one of them shall die upon his bed, and yet with pain. |

| а двох інших пожере меч; | But for the two that remained, the sword shall devour them. |
|

|

|
| меч одного пожере того, який з ним, але і він з часом помре від меча. | For the sword of the one shall devour him that was with him: but he also shall fall by the sword in the last days. |

| А що ти бачив, два підкрильних пера перейшли на голову, яка знаходиться з правого боку, | And whereas thou sawest two under wings passing over unto the head that is on the right side, |

| це ті, яких Всевишній зберіг до кінця царства, тобто царство убоге і сповнене занепокоєнь. | this is the interpretation: These are they, whom the Most High hath kept unto his end: this is the small kingdom and full of trouble, as thou sawest. |

| це — Помазаник, збережений Всевишнім до кінця проти них і нечестя їх, Який викриє їх і представить перед ними утиски їх. | this is the anointed one, whom the Most High hath kept unto the end of days, who shall spring up out of the seed of David, and he shall come and speak unto them and reprove them for their wickedness and unrighteousness, and shall heap up before them their contemptuous dealings. |

| Він поставить їх на суд живих і, викривши їх, покарає їх. | For at the first he shall set them alive in his judgment, and when he hath reproved them, he shall destroy them. |

| Він з милосердя визволить залишок народу Мого, тих, які збереглися у межах Моїх, і обрадує їх, доки не прийде кінець, день суду, про який Я сказав тобі на початку. | For the rest of my people shall he deliver with mercy, those that have been preserved throughout my borders, and he shall make them joyful until the coming of the end, even the day of judgment, whereof I have spoken unto thee from the beginning. |

| Такий сон, бачений тобою, і таке значення його. | This is the dream that thou sawest, and this is the interpretation thereof: |

| Ти один був достойний знати цю таємницю Всевишнього. | and thou only hast been meet to know the secret of the Most High. |
|

|
| Усе це, бачене тобою, напиши у книзі і поклади у потаємному місці; | Therefore write all these things that thou hast seen in a book, and put them in a secret place: |
|

|
| і навчи цього мудрих з народу твого, яких серця́ ви́знаєш здатними прийняти і зберігати ці таємниці. | and thou shalt teach them to the wise of thy people, whose hearts thou knowest are able to comprehend and keep these secrets. |
|

|
| А ти пробудь тут ще сім днів, щоб тобі показано було, що Всевишньому вгодно буде показати тобі. І відійшов від мене. | But wait thou here thyself yet seven days more, that there may be shown unto thee whatsoever it pleaseth the Most High to show thee. And he departed from me. |

| Коли після закінчення семи днів весь народ почув, що я не повернувся у місто, зібралися всі від малого до великого і, прийшовши до мене, говорили мені: | And it came to pass, when all the people saw that the seven days were past, and I had not come again into the city, they gathered them all together, from the least unto the greatest, and came unto me, and spake to me, saying, |

| чим згрішили ми проти тебе? І чим скривдили тебе, що ти, залишивши нас, сидиш на цьому місці? | What have we offended thee? and what evil have we done against thee, that thou hast utterly forsaken us, and sittest in this place? |

| Ти один із усього народу залишився нам, як гроно від винограду, як світильник у темному місці і як пристань і корабель, урятований від бурі. | For of all the prophets thou only art left us, as a cluster of the vintage, and as a lamp in a dark place, and as a haven for a ship saved from the tempest. |
|

|
| Невже мало бід, що сталися з нами? | Are not the evils which are come to us sufficient? |
|

|

|
| Якщо ти залишиш нас, то краще було б для нас згоріти, коли горів Сион. | If thou shalt forsake us, how much better had it been for us, if we also had been consumed in the burning of Zion! |
|

|
| Бо ми не кращі за тих, які померли там. І плакали вони з голосним воланням. Відповідаючи їм, я сказав: | For we are not better than they that died there. And they wept with a loud voice. And I answered them, and said, |

| надійся, Ізраїлю, і не тужи, доме Якова; | Be of good comfort, O Israel; and be not sorrowful, thou house of Jacob: |
|

|
| бо пам’ятає про вас Всевишній, і Кріпкий не забув вас у напасті. | for the Most High hath you in remembrance, and the Mighty hath not forgotten you forever. |
|

|
| І я не залишив вас і не пішов від вас, але прийшов на це місце, щоб помолитися за розорений Сион і просити милосердя приниженій святині вашій. | As for me, I have not forsaken you, neither am I departed from you: but am come into this place, to pray for the desolation of Zion, and that I might seek mercy for the low estate of your sanctuary. |

| а я залишався у полі протягом семи днів, як повелено мені, і годувався у ті дні тільки квітами польовими, і трава була мені їжею. | but I sat in the field seven days, as the angel commanded me; and in those days I did eat only of the flowers of the field, and had my meat of the herbs. |

| І було після семи днів, я бачив уночі сон: | And it came to pass after seven days, I dreamed a dream by night: |
|

|
| ось, піднявся вітер з моря, щоб збурити всі хвилі його. | and, lo, there arose a wind from the sea, that it moved all the waves thereof. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Я дивився, і ось, вийшов кріпкий муж з воїнством небесним, і куди б він не повертав лице своє, щоб глянути, все тремтіло, що виднілося під ним; | And I beheld, and, lo, this wind caused to come up from the midst of the sea as it were the likeness of a man, and I beheld, and, lo, that man flew with the clouds of heaven: and when he turned his countenance to look, all things trembled that were seen under him. |

| і куди б не виходив голос з уст його, загорялися всі, які чули голос його, подібно до того, як тане віск, коли відчує вогонь. | And whensoever the voice went out of his mouth, all they burned that heard his voice, like as the wax melteth when it feeleth the fire. |

| І після цього бачив я: ось, зібралася безліч людей, яким не було числа, від чотирьох вітрів небесних, щоб перебороти цього мужа, який піднявся з моря. | And after this I beheld, and, lo, there was gathered together a multitude of men, without number, from the four winds of heaven, to make war against the man that came out of the sea. |

| Бачив я, і ось, він виліпив собі велику гору і злетів на неї. | And I beheld, and, lo, he graved himself a great mountain, and flew upon it. |

|
| Я намагався побачити ту країну або місце, звідки виліплена була ця гора, але не міг. | But I sought to see the region or place whereout the mountain was graven, and I could not. |
|

|
| Після цього бачив я, що всі, які зібралися перемогти його, дуже злякалися й, однак же, насмілилися воювати. | And after this I beheld, and, lo, all they that were gathered together to fight against him were sore afraid, and yet dared fight. |
|

|
| Він же, коли побачив поривання безлічі, яка йшла, не підняв руки своєї, ні списа не тримав, і ніякої зброї військової; | And, lo, as he saw the assault of the multitude that came, he neither lifted up his hand, nor held spear, nor any instrument of war: |
|

|
| але тільки, як я бачив, він випускав з уст своїх ніби подув вогню і з губ своїх — ніби подих полум’я і з язика свого пускав іскри і бурі, і все це змішалося разом: і подув вогню і подих полум’я і сильна буря. | but only I saw how that he sent out of his mouth as it had been a flood of fire, and out of his lips a flaming breath, and out of his tongue he cast forth sparks of the storm. |

| І стрімко напав він на цю безліч, яка приготувалася воювати, і спалив усіх, так що нічого не видно було з незліченної безлічі, крім пороху, і тільки був запах від диму; побачив я це, і настрашився. | And these were all mingled together; the flood of fire, the flaming breath, and the great storm; and fell upon the assault of the multitude which was prepared to fight, and burned them up every one, so that upon a sudden of an innumerable multitude nothing was to be perceived, but only dust of ashes and smell of smoke: when I saw this I was amazed. |

| Після цього я бачив того мужа, що сходив з гори і закликав до себе іншу безліч, мирну. | Afterward I beheld the same man come down from the mountain, and call unto him another multitude which was peaceable. |

| І багато хто приступав до нього, деякі з лицями веселими, а деякі із сумними, деякі були зв’язані, деяких приносили, — і я знеміг від великого страху, прокинувся і сказав: | And there came much people unto him, whereof some were glad, some were sorry, some of them were bound, and other some brought of them that were offered: then through great fear I awoke, and prayed unto the Most High, and said, |

| Ти від початку показав рабові Твоєму чудеса ці і судив мене достойним, щоб прийняти молитву мою; | Thou hast shown thy servant these wonders from the beginning, and hast counted me worthy that thou shouldest receive my prayer: |

|
| покажи ж мені і значення сну цього, | and now show me moreover the interpretation of this dream. |
|
16
|
16
|
| тому що, як я розумію розумом моїм, горе тим, які залишені будуть до тих днів, а ще більше горе тим, які не залишені. | For as I conceive in mine understanding, woe unto them that shall be left in those days! and much more woe unto them that are not left! |
|

|
| Бо ті, які не залишені, були сумні. | for they that were not left shall be in heaviness, |
|
18
|
18
|
| Тепер я розумію, що те, що відкладено на останні дні, зустріне їх, але і тих, які залишені. | understanding the things that are laid up in the latter days, but not attaining unto them. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Тому вони прийшли у великі небезпеки і великі утруднення, як показують ці сни. | But woe unto them also that are left, for this cause; for they shall see great perils and many necessities, like as these dreams declare. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Але легше тому, хто знаходиться у небезпеці, перетерпіти це, ніж перейти, подібно до хмари, із світу цього і не бачити того, що буде в останні часи. Він відповів мені і сказав: | Yet is it better for one to be in peril and to come into these things, than to pass away as a cloud out of the world, and not to see the things that shall happen in the last days. And he answered unto me, and said, |

| І значення видіння Я скажу тобі, і про що ти говорив, відкрию тобі. | The interpretation of the vision shall I tell thee, and I will also open unto thee the things whereof thou hast made mention. |

|
| Оскільки ти говорив про тих, які залишені, то ось пояснення: | Whereas thou hast spoken of them that are left behind, this is the interpretation: |

|
| хто витримає небезпеку у той час, той зберіг себе, а ті, які впадуть у небезпеку, це ті, які мають діла і віру у Всемогутнього. | He that shall endure the peril in that time shall keep them that be fallen into danger, even such as have works, and faith toward the Almighty. |
|

|
24
|
| Отже, знай, що ті, які залишені, блаженніші за померлих. | Know therefore, that they that are left behind are more blessed than they that are dead. |
|
25
|

|
| Ось пояснення видіння: оскільки ти бачив мужа, який виходив із середини моря, | These are the interpretations of the vision: Whereas thou sawest a man coming up from the midst of the sea, |
|

|
26
|
| це той, якого Всевишній зберігає багато часів, який самим собою визволить творіння Своє й управить тих, які залишені. | the same is he whom the Most High hath kept a great season, who by his own self shall deliver his creature: and he shall order them that are left behind. |
|

|
| А що ти бачив ніби вітер, вогонь і бурю, які виходили із уст його, | And whereas thou sawest, that out of his mouth there came wind, and fire, and storm; |
|

|
28
|
| і що він не тримав ні списа і ніякої військової зброї, але спрямування його уразило безліч, яка прийшла, щоб перемогти його, то ось пояснення: | and whereas he held neither spear, nor any instrument of war, but destroyed the assault of that multitude which came to fight against him; this is the interpretation: |
|

|
| ось, настають дні, коли Всевишній почне спасати тих, які на землі, | Behold, the days come, when the Most High will begin to deliver them that are upon the earth. |
|
30
|
30
|
| і приведе у здивування тих, що живуть на землі. | And there shall come astonishment of mind upon them that dwell on the earth. |
|
31
|
31
|
| І будуть починати війни одні проти одних, місто проти міста, одне місце проти іншого, народ проти народу, царство проти царства. | And one shall think to war against another, city against city, place against place, people against people, and kingdom against kingdom. |
|

|

|
| Коли це буде і з’являться знамення, які Я показав тобі раніше, тоді відкриється Син Мій, Якого ти бачив, як мужа, який сходить. | And it shall be, when these things shall come to pass, and the signs shall happen which I showed thee before, then shall my Son be revealed, whom thou sawest as a man ascending. |

| І коли всі народи почують голос Його, кожен облишить війну у своїй власній країні, яку вони мають між собою. | And it shall be, when all the nations hear his voice, every man shall leave his own land and the battle they have one against another. |
|

|
| І збереться в одне зібрання безліч незліченна, ніби бажаючи йти і перемогти Його. | And an innumerable multitude shall be gathered together, as thou sawest, desiring to come, and to fight against him. |
|
35
|
35
|
| Він же стане на верху гори Сион. | But he shall stand upon the top of the mount Zion. |
|
36
|
36
|
| І Сион прийде і покажеться усім приготований і влаштований, як ти бачив гору, виліплену без рук. | And Zion shall come, and shall be shown to all men, being prepared and built, like as thou sawest the mountain graven without hands. |
|
37
|
37
|
| Син же Мій викриє нечестя, винайдені цими народами, які своїми злими помислами наблизили бурю і муки, якими вони почнуть мучитися, | And this my Son shall rebuke the nations which are come for their wickedness, with plagues that are like unto a tempest; |
|
38
|
38
|
| і які подібні до вогню; і Він знищить їх без великих зусиль законом, який подібний до вогню. | and shall taunt them to their face with their evil thoughts, and the torments wherewith they shall be tormented, which are likened unto a flame: and he shall destroy them without labor by the law, which is likened unto fire. |
|

|
| А що ти бачив, що Він збирав до себе іншу, мирну громаду: | And whereas thou sawest that he gathered unto him another multitude that was peaceable; |
|
40
|
40
|
| це десять колін, які відведені були полоненими з землі своєї у дні царя Осії, якого відвів у полон Салманассар, цар Ассирійський, і перевів їх за ріку, і переведені були у землю іншу. | these are the ten tribes, which were led away out of their own land in the time of Hoshea the king, whom Shalmaneser the king of the Assyrians led away captive, and he carried them beyond the River, and they were carried into another land. |

| Вони ж поклали у раді своїй, щоб залишити безліч язичників і вирушити у далеку країну, де ніколи не жив рід людський, | But they took this counsel among themselves, that they would leave the multitude of the heathen, and go forth into a further country, where never mankind dwelt, |
|

|
| щоб там дотримуватися законів своїх, яких вони не дотримувалися у країні своїй. | that they might there keep their statutes, which they had not kept in their own land. |
|
43
|
43
|
| Тісними входами підійшли вони до ріки Євфрату; | And they entered by the narrow passages of the river Euphrates. |
|
44
|
44
|
| бо Всевишній створив тоді для них чудеса і зупинив жили ріки, доки вони проходили; | For the Most High then wrought signs for them, and stayed the springs of the River, till they were passed over. |
|
45
|
45
|
| бо через цю країну йшли вони довго, півтора року; ця країна називається Арсареф. | For through that country there was a great way to go, namely, of a year and a half: and the same region is called Arzareth. |
|

|
46
|
| Там жили вони до останнього часу. І нині, коли вони почнуть приходити, | Then dwelt they there until the latter time; and now when they begin to come again, |
|
47
|
47
|
| Всевишній знову зупинить жили ріки, щоб вони могли пройти; тому ти бачив безліч мирну. | the Most High stayeth the springs of the River again, that they may go through: therefore sawest thou the multitude gathered together with peace. |
|

48
|
| Але ті, які залишені від народу твого, це ті, які знаходяться всередині меж Моїх. | But those that are left behind of thy people are they that are found within my holy border. |
|
49
|
49
|
| Бо, коли Він почне знищувати безліч народів, які зібралися разом, Він захистить народ Свій, який залишиться. | It shall be therefore when he shall destroy the multitude of the nations that are gathered together, he shall defend the people that remain. |
|
50
|
50
|
| І тоді покаже їм безліч чудес. | And then shall he show them very many wonders. |
|

|
| Я сказав: Владико Господи! Поясни мені це, для чого бачив я мужа, який виходив із середини моря? | Then said I, O Lord that bearest rule, show me this: wherefore I have seen the man coming up from the midst of the sea. |
|

|
52
|
| І Він сказав мені: як не можеш ти дослідити і пізнати того, що у глибині моря, так ніхто не може на землі бачити Сина Мого, ні тих, які з Ним, хіба тільки під час дня Його. | And he said unto me, like as one can neither seek out nor know what is in the deep of the sea, even so can no man upon earth see my Son, or those that are with him, but in the time of his day. |

| Ось тлумачення сну, який ти бачив і яким ти один тут просвічений. | This is the interpretation of the dream which thou sawest, and for this thou only art enlightened herein. |

| Ти залишив діла твої і вправлявся у законі Моєму, і знайшов його, | For thou hast forsaken thine own ways, and applied thy diligence unto mine, and hast sought out my law. |
|

|
| бо життя твоє ти влаштував у мудрості і розсудливість назвав твоєю матір’ю. | Thy life hast thou ordered in wisdom, and hast called understanding thy mother. |
|
56
|
56
|
| Тому Я показав тобі винагороди у Всевишнього: після трьох днів Я покажу тобі інше і відкрию тобі важливе і дивне. | And therefore have I shown thee this; for there is a reward laid up with the Most High: and it shall be, after other three days I will speak other things unto thee, and declare unto thee mighty and wondrous things. |

| Тоді я пішов і вийшов у поле, багато славлячи і дякуючи Всевишньому за чудеса, які Він звершував часами, | Then went I forth and passed into the field, giving praise and thanks greatly unto the Most High because of his wonders, which he did from time to time; |

| і що Він управляє теперішнім і тим, що відбудеться в часі, — і там я сидів три дні. | and because he governeth the time, and such things as fall in their seasons. And there I sat three days. |

| І було після трьох днів, я сидів під дубом, і ось, голос вийшов з куща навпроти мене і сказав: Ездро, Ездро! | And it came to pass upon the third day, I sat under an oak, and, behold, there came a voice out of a bush over against me, and said, Ezra, Ezra. |
|

|
| Я сказав: ось я, Господи. І встав на ноги мої. | And I said, Here am I, Lord. And I stood up upon my feet. |
|

|
| Тоді сказав Він мені: у кущі Я відкрився і говорив Мойсеєві, коли народ Мій був рабом у Єгипті; | Then said he unto me, In the bush I did manifestly reveal myself, and talked with Moses, when my people were in bondage in Egypt: |
|

|
| і послав його і вивів народ Мій з Єгипту, і привів його до гори Синаю і тримав його у Себе багато днів, | and I sent him, and he led my people out of Egypt; and I brought him up to the mount of Sinai, where I held him by me for many days; |
|

|
| і відкрив йому багато чудес і показав таємниці часів і кінець, і заповів йому, сказавши: | and told him many wondrous things, and showed him the secrets of the times, and the end of the seasons; and commanded him, saying, |
|

|
| «Ці слова оголоси, а інші приховай». | These words shalt thou publish openly, and these shalt thou hide. |
|

|

|
| І нині тобі говорю: | And now I say unto thee, |
|

|

|
| знамення, які Я показав тобі, і сни, які ти бачив, і тлумачення, які чув, поклади у серці твоєму; | Lay up in thy heart the signs that I have shown, and the dreams that thou hast seen, and the interpretations which thou hast heard: |
|

|
| бо ти взятий будеш від людей і будеш знаходитися із Сином Моїм і з подібними до тебе, доки не закінчаться часи. | for thou shalt be taken away from men, and from henceforth thou shalt remain with my Son, and with such as are like thee, until the times be ended. |
|

|
10
|
| Бо вік утратив свою юність, і часи наближаються до старости, | For the world hath lost its youth, and the times begin to wax old. |
|
11
|
11
|
| оскільки вік розділений на дванадцять частин, і дев’ять частин його і половина десятої частини вже минули, | For the world is divided into twelve parts, and ten parts of it are gone already, even the half of the tenth part: |
|

|
| і залишається те, що після половини десятої частини. | and there remain of it two parts after the middle of the tenth part. |
|

|
| Отже, нині влаштуй дім твій і напоум народ твій, утіш принижених і зречися тління, | Now therefore set thy house in order, and reprove thy people, comfort the lowly among them, and instruct such of them as are wise, and now renounce the life that is corruptible, |
|

|
| і відпусти від себе смертні помисли, відкинь тягарі людські, зніми із себе немочі єства і відклади вбік тяжкі для тебе помисли, і готуйся переселитися від часів цих. | and let go from the mortal thoughts, cast away from thee the burdens of man, put off now thy weak nature, |

|
| Бо після більше буде бід, ніж скільки ти бачив нині. | and lay aside the thoughts that are most grievous unto thee, and hasten thee to remove from these times. |
|

|

|
| Скільки буде слабшати вік від старости, стільки буде збільшуватися зло для тих, що живуть. | For yet worse evils than those which thou hast seen happen shall be done hereafter. |
|

|
| Ще далі відійде істина, і наблизиться неправда; уже поспішає прийти видіння, яке ти бачив. | For look, how much the world shall be weaker through age, so much the more shall evils increase upon them that dwell therein. |
|

|
| Тоді відповів я і сказав: ось, я — перед Тобою, Господи; | For the truth shall withdraw itself further off, and falsehood be hard at hand: for now hasteneth the eagle to come, which thou sawest in vision. |
|

|
| я піду, як Ти повелів мені, й напоумлю нинішній народ; але хто навчить тих, які потім народяться? | Then answered I and said, I will speak before thee, O Lord. |
|

|
| Бо вік у пітьмі лежить, і ті, що живуть у ньому, — без світла; | Behold, I will go, as thou hast commanded me, and reprove the people that now are: but they that shall be born afterward, who shall admonish them? for the world is set in darkness, and they that dwell therein are without light. |
|

|
| тому що закон Твій спалений, і від того ніхто не знає, що зроблено Тобою або що слід їм робити. | For thy law is burnt, therefore no man knoweth the things that are done of thee, or the works that shall be done. |
|

|
| Але якщо я придбав милість у Тебе, зішли на мене Духа Святого, щоб я написав усе, що було зроблено у світі від початку, що було написано у законі Твоєму, щоб люди могли знайти путь і щоб ті, які захочуть жити в останні часи, могли жити. | But if I have found favor before thee, send the Holy Spirit unto me, and I shall write all that hath been done in the world since the beginning, even the things that were written in thy law, that men may be able to find the path, and that they that would live in the latter days may live. |

| І Він у відповідь сказав мені: йди, збери народ і скажи йому, щоб він не шукав тебе протягом сорока днів. | And he answered me and said, Go thy way, gather the people together, and say unto them, that they seek thee not for forty days. |

| Ти ж приготуй собі побільше дощечок і візьми із собою Сарія, Даврія, Салемія, Ехана й Асиеля, цих п’ятьох, здатних писати швидко. | But look thou prepare thee many tablets, and take with thee Sarea, Dabria, Selemia, Ethanus, and Asiel, these five, who are ready to write swiftly; |

| І прийди сюди, і Я запалю у серці твоєму світильник розуму, який не згасне, доки не закінчиться те, що ти почнеш писати. | and come hither, and I shall light a lamp of understanding in thy heart, which shall not be put out, till the things be ended which thou shalt write. |

|
| І коли ти звершиш це, то дещо оголоси, а дещо таємно передай мудрим. Завтра у цю годину ти почнеш писати. | And when thou hast done, some things shalt thou publish openly, and some things shalt thou deliver in secret to the wise: tomorrow this hour shalt thou begin to write. |

| Тоді я пішов, як Він повелів мені, і зібрав весь народ і сказав: | Then went I forth, as he commanded me, and gathered all the people together, and said, |

| слухай, Ізраїлю, слова ці: | Hear these words, O Israel. |

| батьки наші були подорожніми у Єгипті, і були визволені звідти, | Our fathers at the beginning were strangers in Egypt, and they were delivered from thence, |

| І дана була вам земля у спадщину і земля Сион; але батьки ваші і ви робили беззаконня і не трималися тих шляхів, які Всевишній заповів вам. | Then was the land, even the land of Zion, given you for a possession: but ye yourselves, and your fathers, have done unrighteousness, and have not kept the ways which the Most High commanded you. |

| І Він, як праведний суддя, відняв у вас нині, що дарував вам. | And forasmuch as he is a righteous judge, he took from you for a while the thing that he had given you. |

| І нині ви тут і брати ваші між вами. | And now ye are here, and your brethren are among you. |
|

|
| Якщо ви будете управляти почуттям вашим і впорядкуєте серце ваше, то збережете життя і після смерти одержите милість. | Therefore if so be that ye will rule over your own understanding, and instruct your hearts, ye shall be kept alive, and after death ye shall obtain mercy. |

|
| Бо після смерти настане суд, коли ми оживемо; і тоді імена праведних будуть оголошені й показані діла нечестивих. | For after death shall the judgment come, when we shall live again: and then shall the names of the righteous be manifest, and the works of the ungodly shall be declared. |

| Ніхто не приходь до мене нині і не шукай мене до сорока днів. | Let no man therefore come unto me now, nor seek after me these forty days. |
|

|
| І взяв я п’ятьох мужів, як Він заповів мені, і пішли ми у поле і залишилися там. | So I took the five men, as he commanded me, and we went forth into the field, and remained there. |

|
| І ось, на другий день голос воззвав до мене: Ездро! відкрий уста твої і випий те, чим Я напою тебе. | And it came to pass on the morrow that, lo, a voice called me, saying, Ezra, open thy mouth, and drink that I give thee to drink. |

| Я відкрив уста мої, і ось повна чаша подана була мені, яка була наповнена ніби водою, але колір того був подібний до вогню. | Then opened I my mouth, and, behold, there was reached unto me a full cup, which was full as it were with water, but the color of it was like fire. |

| І взяв я і пив; і коли я пив, серце моє дихало розумом і у грудях моїх зростала мудрість, бо дух мій підкріплювався пам’яттю; | And I took it, and drank: and when I had drunk of it, my heart uttered understanding, and wisdom grew in my breast, for my spirit retained its memory: |

| Всевишній дарував розум п’ятьом мужам, і вони вночі писали по порядку, що було говорено їм і чого вони не знали. | The Most High gave understanding unto the five men, and they wrote by course the things that were told them, in characters which they knew not, and they sat forty days: now they wrote in the daytime, and at night they ate bread. |

| Вночі вони їли хліб; а я говорив удень і не мовчав уночі. | As for me, I spake in the day, and by night I held not my tongue. |

| Написані ж були за сорок днів дев’яносто чотири книги. | So in forty days were written fourscore and fourteen books. |

| І коли виповнилося сорок днів, | And it came to pass, when the forty days were fulfilled, that the Most High spake unto me, saying, The first that thou hast written publish openly, and let the worthy and unworthy read it: |

| Всевишній сказав: перші, які ти написав, поклади відкрито, щоб могли читати достойні і недостойні, | but keep the seventy last, that thou mayest deliver them to such as be wise among thy people: |

|
| але останні сімдесят збережи, щоб передати їх мудрим з народу; | for in them is the spring of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the stream of knowledge. |
|

|
| бо у них провідник розуму, джерело мудрости і ріка знання. Так я і зробив. | And I did so. |

|
| Говори, щоб чув народ Мій слова пророцтва, які вкладу Я у вуста твої, — говорить Господь; | Behold, speak thou in the ears of my people the words of prophecy, which I will put in thy mouth, saith the Lord: |

|
| і зроби, щоб вони написані були на хартії, тому що вони вірні й істинні. | and cause thou them to be written in paper: for they are faithful and true. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Не бійся, що будуть замишляти проти тебе, і нехай не бентежить тебе невір’я тих, які будуть говорити проти тебе, | Fear not their imaginations against thee, let not the unbelief of them that speak against thee trouble thee. |
|

|
4
|
| бо всякий невіруючий у невір’ї своєму помре. | For all the unbelievers shall die in their unbelief. |
|

|
5
|
| Ось, Я наведу, — говорить Господь, — на коло земне біди: меч і голод, і смерть і пагубу | Behold, saith the Lord, I bring evils upon the whole earth; sword and famine, and death and destruction. |
|

|
6
|
| за те, що нечестя людей осквернило всю землю, і пагубні діла їхні переповнилися. | For wickedness hath prevailed over every land, and their hurtful works are come to the full. |
|

|
7
|
| Тому говорить Господь: | Therefore saith the Lord, |
|

|
8
|
| Я вже не буду мовчати про беззаконня, які звершують вони нечестиво, і не буду терпіти у них того, що вони роблять злочинно: ось, кров невинна і праведна волає до Мене, і душі праведних взивають безперестанно. | I will hold my peace no more as touching their wickedness, which they profanely commit, neither will I suffer them in these things, which they wickedly practice: behold, the innocent and righteous blood crieth unto me, and the souls of the righteous cry out continually. |

| Помщуся їм, — говорить Господь, — і візьму від них до Себе всяку кров невинну. | I will surely avenge them, saith the Lord, and will receive unto me all the innocent blood from among them. |
|

|

|
| Ось, народ Мій ведеться, як стадо на заколення; не потерплю більше, щоб він жив у Єгипті, | Behold, my people is led as a flock to the slaughter: I will not suffer them now to dwell in the land of Egypt: |
|

|
11
|
| але виведу його рукою сильною і правицею високою, й уражу Єгипет карою, як колись, і погублю всю землю його. | but I will bring them out with a mighty hand and with a high arm, and will smite Egypt with plagues, as aforetime, and will destroy all the land thereof. |
|

12
|
| Заплаче Єгипет і основи його, уражені стратою і помстою, яку наведе на нього Бог. | Let Egypt mourn, and the foundations thereof, for the plague of the chastisement and the punishment that God shall bring upon it. |
|

|

|
| Заплачуть хлібороби, які обробляють землю, бо занепаде у них насіння від іржі й від граду і від страшної зірки. | Let the husbandmen that till the ground mourn: for their seeds shall fail and their trees shall be laid waste through the blasting and hail, and a terrible star. |
|

|
14
|
| Горе віку і тим, які живуть у ньому, | Woe to the world and them that dwell therein! |
|
15
|
15
|
| бо наблизився меч і знищення їх, і постане народ на народ для війни, і мечі у руках їх. | for the sword and their destruction draweth nigh, and nation shall rise up against nation to battle with weapons in their hands. |
|
16
|
16
|
| Люди зробляться непостійними і, одні одних долаючи, будуть недбалими до царя свого, і начальники — до ходу справ своїх у межах своєї влади. | For there shall be sedition among men; and waxing strong one against another, they shall not regard their king nor the chief of their great ones, in their might. |
|

17
|
| Побажає людина йти у місто, і не зможе, | For a man shall desire to go into a city, and shall not be able. |
|
18
|
18
|
| бо, через їхню гордість, міста обуряться, доми будуть розорені, на людей нападе страх. | For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled, the houses shall be destroyed, and men shall be afraid. |
|

|
19
|
| Не зглянеться людина на ближнього свого, віддаючи доми їх на розорення зброєю, розкрадаючи майно їх з причини голоду і багатьох бід. | A man shall have no pity upon his neighbor, but shall make an assault on their houses with the sword, and plunder their goods, because of the lack of bread, and for great tribulation. |

| Ось, Я скликаю, — говорить Бог, — усіх царів землі, від сходу і півдня, від півночі і Ливану, щоб благоговіли переді Мною і навернулися до себе самих, і щоб воздати їм, що вони робили тим. | Behold, saith God, I call together all the kings of the earth, to stir up them that are from the rising of the sun, from the south, from the east, and Lebanon; to turn themselves one against another, and repay the things that they have done to them. |

| Як чинять вони навіть дотепер з обраними Моїми, так учиню з ними і воздам у надро їх, — говорить Господь Бог. | Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen, so will I do also, and recompense in their bosom. Thus saith the Lord God: |

| Не пощадить правиця Моя грішників, і меч не перестане уражати тих, що проливають на землю невинну кров. | My right hand shall not spare the sinners, and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent blood upon the earth. |
|

|

|
| Зійшов вогонь від гніву Його і знищив основи землі і грішників, як запалену солому. | And a fire is gone forth from his wrath, and hath consumed the foundations of the earth, and the sinners, like the straw that is kindled. |
|

|
24
|
| Горе грішникам і тим, що не дотримуються заповідей Моїх! — говорить Господь. | Woe to them that sin, and keep not my commandments! saith the Lord. |
|
25
|
25
|
| Не пощаджу їх. Відійдіть, сини відступників, не оскверняйте святині Моєї. | I will not spare them: go your way, ye rebellious children, defile not my sanctuary. |
|

26
|
| Господь знає всіх, які грішать проти Нього; тому віддав їх на смерть і на вбиття. | For the Lord knoweth all them that trespass against him, therefore hath he delivered them unto death and destruction. |
|

|
27
|
| На коло земне прийшли вже біди, і ви перебуватимете у них. Бог не визволить вас, тому що ви згрішили проти Нього. | For now are the evils come upon the whole earth, and ye shall remain in them: for God shall not deliver you, because ye have sinned against him. |
|

|
| Ось, видіння грізне, і лице його від сходу. | Behold, a vision horrible, and the appearance thereof from the east! |
|
29
|
29
|
| Виступлять породження драконів аравійських на багатьох колісницях і зі швидкістю вітру понесуться по землі, так що наведуть страх і трепет на всіх, які почують про них. | And the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots, and from the day that they set forth the hissing of them is carried over the earth, so that all they that shall hear them may fear also and tremble. |

| Вийдуть, як вепри з лісу, кармоняни, які шаленіють у люті, і прийдуть у великій силі, вступлять у боротьбу з ними і спустошать частину землі Ассирійської. | Also the Carmonians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wild boars of the wood, and with great power shall they come, and join battle with them, and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians with their teeth. |

| Потім дракони, які пам’ятають походження своє, візьмуть гору і, володіючи великою силою, повернуться переслідувати тих. | And then shall the dragons have the upper hand, remembering their nature; and if they shall turn themselves, conspiring together in great power to persecute them, |
|

|
| Ті збентежаться, замовкнуть перед силою їх і повернуть ноги свої на втечу. | then these shall be troubled, and keep silence through their power, and shall turn and flee. |
|
33
|
33
|
| Але той, що знаходиться у засідці з боку ассиріян, оточить їх і умертвить одного з них; у війську їх виникнуть страх і трепет і ремство на царів їх. | And from the land of the Assyrians shall the lier-in-wait besiege them, and consume one of them, and upon their host shall be fear and trembling, and sedition against their kings. |

| Ось, хмари від сходу і від півночі до півдня, і вигляд їх дуже грізний, сповнений лютости і бурі. | Behold, clouds from the east and from the north unto the south, and they are very horrible to look upon, full of wrath and storm. |
|

|
| Вони зіштовхнуться між собою, і скинуть багато зірок на землю і зірку їх; і буде кров від меча до черева, | They shall dash one against another, and they shall pour out a plentiful storm upon the earth, even their own star; and there shall be blood from the sword unto the horse’s belly, |
|

|
36
|
| і послід людський — до сідла верблюда; страх і трепет великий буде на землі. | and to the thigh of man, and to the camel’s hock. |
|
37
|
37
|
| Жахнуться всі, які побачать цю лютість, і затремтять. | And there shall be fearfulness and great trembling upon earth: and they that see that wrath shall be afraid, and trembling shall take hold upon them. |
|
38
|
38
|
| Після того багато разів будуть підніматися бурі від півдня і півночі і частково від заходу, | And after this shall there be stirred up great storms from the south, and from the north, and another part from the west. |
|
39
|
39
|
| і вітри сильні здіймуться від сходу і відкриють його і хмару, яку Я послав у гніві; а зірка, призначена для страху при східному і західному вітрі, пошкодиться. | And strong winds shall arise from the east, and shall shut it up, even the cloud which he raised up in wrath; and the star that was to cause destruction by the east wind shall be violently driven toward the south and west. |

| І піднімуться хмари, великі і сильні, повні лютости, і зірка, щоб настрашити всю землю і жителів її; і проллють на всяке місце, високе і піднесене, страшну зірку, | And great clouds and mighty and full of wrath shall be lifted up, and the star, that they may destroy all the earth, and them that dwell therein; and they shall pour out over every high and eminent one a terrible star, |

| вогонь і град, мечі, що літають, і багато вод, щоб наповнити всі поля і всі джерела безліччю вод. | fire, and hail, and flying swords, and many waters, that all plains may be full, and all rivers, with the abundance of those waters. |

| І затоплять місто, і стіни, і гори, і пагорби, і дерева у лісах, і траву на луках, і хлібні рослини їх; | And they shall break down the cities and walls, mountains and hills, trees of the wood, and grass of the meadows, and their grain. |
|

|
| і пройдуть, не спиняючись, до Вавилона і знищать його; | And they shall go on steadfastly unto Babylon, and destroy her. |
|
44
|
44
|
| зберуться до нього й оточать його; проллють зірку і лють на нього. І підніметься пил і дим до самого неба, і всі навкруги будуть оплакувати його, | They shall come unto her, and compass her about; the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her: then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven, and all they that are about her shall bewail her. |

| а ті, які залишаться підвладними йому, будуть служити тим, що навели страх. | And they that remain shall do service unto them that have put her in fear. |

|
| І ти, Асіє, співучаснице у надії Вавилона й у славі його: | And thou, Asia, that art partaker in the beauty of Babylon, and in the glory of her person: |
|

|
| горе тобі, бідна, за те, що уподібнювалася йому і прикрашала дочок твоїх у блудодіянні, щоб вони подобалися і славилися у коханців твоїх, які бажали завжди блудодіяти з тобою. | woe unto thee, thou wretch, because thou hast made thyself like unto her; thou hast decked thy daughters in whoredom, that they might please and glory in thy lovers, who have always desired thee to commit whoredom withal! |

| Ти наслідувала ненависного в усіх ділах і заходах його. | Thou hast followed her that is hateful in all her works and inventions: therefore saith God, |

| За те, — говорить Бог, — пошлю на тебе біди: удівство, убогість, і голод, і меч, і моровицю, щоб спустошити доми твої насильством і смертю. | I will send evils upon thee; widowhood, poverty, famine, sword, and pestilence, to waste thy houses unto destruction and death. |

| І слава могутности твоєї засохне, як квітка, коли настане спека, послана на тебе. | And the glory of thy power shall be dried up as a flower, when the heat shall arise that is sent over thee. |
|

|
| Ти знеможеш, як убога, побита і поранена жінками, щоб люди знатні і коханці не могли приймати тебе. | Thou shalt be weakened as a poor woman with stripes, and as one chastened with wounds, so that thy mighty ones and thy lovers thou shalt not be able to receive. |
|

|
| Чи став би Я так ненавидіти тебе, — говорить Господь, — | Would I with jealousy have so proceeded against thee, saith the Lord, |
|

|

|
| якби ти не убивала обраних Моїх повсякчас, піднімаючи руки на поразку їх і глумлячись зі смерти їх, коли ти була у сп’янінні? | if thou hadst not always slain my chosen, exalting the stroke of thy hands, and saying over their dead, when thou wast drunk, |

| Прикрашай твоє лице. | Set forth the beauty of thy countenance? |
|

|
| Мзда блудодіяння твого у надрі твоєму; за те й одержиш ти винагороду. | The reward of a harlot shall be in thy bosom, therefore shalt thou receive recompense. |
|

|
| Як чинила ти з обраними Моїми, — говорить Господь, — так з тобою вчинить Бог, і піддасть тебе бідам. | Like as thou shalt do unto my chosen, saith the Lord, even so shall God do unto thee, and shall deliver thee into mischief. |
|

|
| Діти твої загинуть від голоду, ти впадеш від меча, міста твої будуть зруйновані, і всі твої впадуть у полі від меча. | And thy children shall die of hunger, and thou shalt fall by the sword: and thy cities shall be broken down, and all thine shall perish by the sword in the field. |

| А які на горах, ті загинуть від голоду, і будуть їсти плоть свою через нестачу хліба і пити кров через нестачу води. | And they that are in the mountains shall die of hunger, and eat their own flesh, and drink their own blood, for very hunger of bread, and thirst of water. |

|
| У нещасті підеш по морях, — і там зустрінеш біди. | Thou unhappy above all shalt come and shalt again receive evils. |
|

|

|
| Під час переходів твоїх вони кинуться на спустошене місто, і знищать частину землі твоєї, і частину слави твоєї знищать. | And in the passage they shall rush on the idle city, and shall destroy some portion of thy land, and mar part of thy glory, and shall return again to Babylon that was destroyed. |

| Розорена, ти послужиш для них соломою, а вони для тебе будуть вогнем; | And thou shalt be cast down by them as stubble, and they shall be unto thee as fire; |
|

|
| і знищать тебе, і міста твої, землю твою, гори твої, усі ліси твої і дерева родючі спалять вогнем. | and shall devour thee, and thy cities, thy land, and thy mountains; all thy woods and thy fruitful trees shall they burn up with fire. |

| Синів твоїх поведуть у полон, майно твоє захоплять у здобич, і славу твою знищать. | They shall carry thy children away captive, and shall plunder thy wealth, and mar the glory of thy face. |

|
| Горе тобі, Вавилоне й Асіє, горе тобі, Єгипте і Сиріє! | Woe unto thee, Babylon, and Asia! woe unto thee, Egypt, and Syria! |
|

|

|
| Підпережіться веретищем і волосяницями, оплакуйте синів ваших, і уболівайте, бо наблизилася ваша погибель. | Gird up yourselves with sackcloth and garments of hair, and bewail your children, and lament; for your destruction is at hand. |
|

|
3
|
| Посланий на вас меч, — і хто відхилить його? | A sword is sent upon you, and who is he that may turn it back? |
|
4
|
4
|
| Посланий на вас вогонь, — і хто погасить його? | A fire is sent upon you, and who is he that may quench it? |
|
5
|
5
|
| Послані на вас біди, — і хто відверне їх? | Evils are sent upon you, and who is he that may drive them away? |
|

|
| Чи прожене хто голодного лева у лісі, або чи погасить миттєво вогонь у соломі, коли він почне розгорятися? | May one drive away a hungry lion in the wood? or may one quench the fire in stubble, when it hath once begun to burn? |

| Чи відіб’є хто стрілу, пущену стрільцем сильним? | May one turn again the arrow that is shot of a strong archer? |

|
| Господь сильний посилає біди, — і хто відверне їх? | The Lord God sendeth the evils, and who shall drive them away? |

|

|
| Зійшов вогонь від гніву Його, — і хто погасить його? | A fire shall go forth from his wrath, and who is he that may quench it? |
|

|
10
|
| Він блисне блискавкою, — і хто не убоїться? Прогримить, — і хто не жахнеться? | He shall cast lightning, and who shall not fear? he shall thunder, and who shall not tremble? |

|
| Господь спогляне грізно, — і хто не знищиться до основи від лиця Його? | The Lord shall threaten, and who shall not be utterly broken in pieces at his presence? |

|
| Здригнулася земля і основи її; море хвилюється з дна, і хвилі його збурюються і риби його від лиця Господа і від величі сили Його. | The earth quaketh, and the foundations thereof; the sea ariseth up with waves from the deep, and the waves of it shall be troubled, and the fish thereof also, at the presence of the Lord, and before the glory of his power: |

| Бо сильна Його правиця, яка натягає лук, гострі Його стріли, які пускаються Ним, не ослабнуть, коли будуть посилатися до країв землі. | for strong is his right hand that bendeth the bow, his arrows that he shooteth are sharp, and shall not miss, when they begin to be shot into the ends of the world. |

| Ось, посилаються біди, і не повернуться, доки не прийдуть на землю. | Behold, the evils are sent forth, and shall not return again, until they come upon the earth. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Розгоряється вогонь, і не погасне, доки не попалить основи землі. | The fire is kindled, and shall not be put out, till it consume the foundations of the earth. |
|
16
|
16
|
| Як стріла, пущена сильним стрільцем, не повертається, так не повернуться біди, які будуть послані на землю. | Like as an arrow which is shot of a mighty archer returneth not backward, even so the evils that are sent forth upon earth shall not return again. |
|

|
| Горе мені, горе мені! Хто визволить мене у ті дні? | Woe is me! woe is me! who will deliver me in those days? |
|

|

|
| Почнуться хвороби, — і багато хто застогне; почнеться голод, — і багато хто буде гинути; почнуться війни, — і начальниками оволодіє страх; почнуться біди, — і всі затремтять. | The beginning of sorrows, and there shall be great mournings; the beginning of famine, and many shall perish; the beginning of wars, and the powers shall stand in fear; the beginning of evils, and all shall tremble! what shall they do in all this when the evils shall come? |

| Що мені робити тоді, коли прийдуть біди? | Behold, famine and plague, tribulation and anguish! they are sent as scourges for amendment. |
|

|
| Ось, голод і моровиця, і скорбота і тіснота послані як бичі для виправлення: | But for all these things they shall not turn them from their wickedness, nor be always mindful of the scourges. |
|

|

|
| але при всьому цьому люди не навернуться від беззаконь своїх і про бичі не завжди будуть пам’ятати. | Behold, victuals shall be so good cheap upon earth, that they shall think themselves to be in good case, and even then shall evils grow upon earth, sword, famine, and great confusion. |
|

|
| Ось, на землі буде дешевизна в усьому, і подумають, що настав мир; але саме тоді й спіткають землю біди — меч, голод і велике сум’яття. | For many of them that dwell upon earth shall perish of famine; and the other, that escape the famine, shall the sword destroy. |
|

|
| Від голоду загинуть дуже багато жителів землі, а інші, які перенесуть голод, упадуть від меча. | And the dead shall be cast out as dung, and there shall be no man to comfort them: for the earth shall be left desolate, and the cities thereof shall be cast down. |

| І трупи, як гній, будуть викидати, і нікому буде оплакувати їх, бо земля спорожніє, і міста її будуть зруйновані. | There shall be no husbandman left to till the earth, and to sow it. |
|

|
| Не залишиться нікого, хто обробляв би землю і сіяв на ній. | The trees shall give fruit, and who shall gather them? |
|

|
| Дерева дадуть плоди, і хто буде збирати їх? | The grapes shall ripen, and who shall tread them? for in all places there shall be a great forsaking: |

|
| Виноград дозріє, і хто буде топтати його? Бо всюди буде велике запустіння. | for one man shall desire to see another, or to hear his voice. |

| бо з жителів міста залишиться не більше десяти, і з поселенців — чоловіка два, які сховаються у густих дібровах і розщелинах скель. | As in an orchard of olives upon every tree there be left three or four olives, |

| Як у оливковому саду залишаються іноді на деревах три або чотири маслини, | or as when a vineyard is gathered there be some clusters left by them that diligently seek through the vineyard; |

| або у винограднику обібраному не догледять кілька грон ті, які уважно оббирають виноград: | even so in those days there shall be three or four left by them that search their houses with the sword. |

| так у ті дні залишаться троє або четверо під час обшуку домів їхніх з мечем. | And the earth shall be left desolate, and the fields thereof shall be for briers, and her ways and all her paths shall bring forth thorns, because no sheep shall pass therethrough. |

| Земля залишиться у запустінні, поля її заглухнуть, дороги її і всі стежини її заростуть терням, бо нікому буде ходити по них. | The virgins shall mourn, having no bridegrooms; the women shall mourn, having no husbands; their daughters shall mourn, having no helpers. |

| Плакати будуть дівчата, не маючи наречених; плакати будуть дружини, не маючи чоловіків; плакати будуть дочки їхні, не маючи допомоги. | In the wars shall their bridegrooms be destroyed, and their husbands shall perish of famine. |

| Наречених їхніх уб’ють на війні, і чоловіки їхні загинуть від голоду. | Hear now these things, and understand them, ye servants of the Lord. |

| Слухайте це, і напоумляйтесь, раби Господні! | Behold, the word of the Lord, receive it: disbelieve not the things whereof the Lord speaketh. |

| Це — слово Господа: слухайте його, і не вірте богам, про яких говорить Господь. | Behold, the evils draw nigh, and are not slack. |
|

| Ось, наближаються біди, і не забаряться. | Like as a woman with child in the ninth month, when the hour of her delivery draweth near, within two or three hours doleful pains compass her womb, and when the child cometh forth from the womb, there shall be no tarrying for a moment: |

| Як у вагітної жінки, коли у дев’ятий місяць настане їй час народити сина, години за дві або за три до народження, болі охоплюють утробу її і, при виході немовляти з утроби, не забаряться на жодну хвилину: | even so shall not the evils be slack to come upon the earth, and the world shall groan, and sorrows shall take hold of it on every side. |

| так не забаряться прийти на землю біди, і люди у той час будуть стогнати; болі охоплять їх. | O my people, hear my word: make you ready to the battle, and in those evils be even as pilgrims upon the earth. |

| Слухай слово, народе мій: готуйтеся на битву, і серед бід будьте як пришельці землі. | He that selleth, let him be as he that fleeth away: and he that buyeth, as one that will lose: |

| Хто продає, нехай буде, як той, що збирається на втечу, і хто купує — як той, що готується на загибель; | he that occupieth merchandise, as he that hath no profit by it: and he that buildeth, as he that shall not dwell therein: |

| хто торгує — як той, що не очікує ніякого прибутку, і хто будує дім — як той, що не сподівається жити у ньому. | he that soweth, as if he should not reap: so also he that pruneth the vines, as he that shall not gather the grapes: |

| Сівач нехай думає, що не пожне, і виноградар — що не збере винограду; | they that marry, as they that shall get no children; and they that marry not, as the widowed. |

| ті, що вступають у шлюб, — що не будуть народжувати дітей, і ті, що не вступають, — як удівці. | Inasmuch as they that labor labor in vain; |

| Тому всі трудящі без користи трудяться, | for strangers shall reap their fruits, and plunder their goods, overthrow their houses, and take their children captive, for in captivity and famine shall they beget their children: |

| бо плодами трудів їхніх скористаються чужоземці, і майно їхнє розкрадуть, доми їхні зруйнують, синів їхніх поневолять, бо у полоні і в голоді вони народжують дітей своїх. | and they that traffic traffic to become a spoil: the more they deck their cities, their houses, their possessions, and their own persons, |

| Хто займається хижацтвом, тих, чим довше прикрашають вони міста і доми свої, володіння і лиця свої, | the more will I hate them for their sins, saith the Lord. |

| тим більше зненавиджу за гріхи їхні, — говорить Господь. | Like as a right honest and virtuous woman hateth a harlot, |

|
| Як блудниця ненавидить жінку чесну і дуже побожну, | so shall righteousness hate iniquity, when she decketh herself, and shall accuse her to her face, when he cometh that shall defend him that diligently searcheth out every sin upon earth. |

| так правда зненавидить неправду, що прикрашає себе, і звинуватить її у лице, коли прийде Той, Хто буде захищати того, хто переслідує всякий гріх на землі. | Therefore be ye not like thereunto, nor to the works thereof. |

| Тому не наслідуйте неправду і діла її, | For yet a little while, and iniquity shall be taken away out of the earth, and righteousness shall reign over us. |

| бо ще трохи, і неправда буде вилучена з землі, а правда зацарює над вами. | Let not the sinner say that he hath not sinned: for he shall burn coals of fire upon his head, who saith, I have not sinned before God and his glory. |

| Нехай не говорить грішник, що він не згрішив, бо розпалене вугілля запалає на голові того, хто говорить: я не згрішив перед Господом Богом і славою Його. | Behold, the Lord knoweth all the works of men, their imaginations, their thoughts, and their hearts. |

| Господь знає всі діла людей і починання їхні, і помисли їхні і серця їхні. | Who said, Let the earth be made; and it was made: Let the heaven be made; and it was made. |

| Він сказав: «нехай буде земля», — і земля з’явилася; «нехай буде небо», — і було. | And at his word were the stars established, and he knoweth the number of the stars. |

| Словом Його створені зірки, і Він знає число зірок. | Who searcheth the deep, and the treasures thereof; he hath measured the sea, and what it containeth. |

| Він споглядає безодні й потаємне у них, виміряв море і що у ньому. | Who hath shut the sea in the midst of the waters, and with his word hath he hung the earth upon the waters. |

| Словом Своїм Він утворив море серед вод і землю повісив на водах. | Who spreadeth out the heaven like a vault; upon the waters hath he founded it. |

| Він розпростер небо, як намет, на водах заснував його. | Who hath made in the desert springs of water, and pools upon the tops of the mountains, to send forth rivers from the height to water the earth. |

| Він вмістив у пустелі джерела вод і озера на вершинах гір, для зведення рік з високих скель, щоб напоювати землю. | Who framed man, and put a heart in the midst of the body, and gave him breath, life, and understanding, |

| Він створив людину і поклав серце її всередині тіла, і вклав у неї дух, життя і розум | yea, the spirit of God Almighty. He who made all things, and searcheth out hidden things in hidden places, |

| і дихання Бога всемогутнього, Який створив усе і споглядає все потаємне у потаємних землі. | surely he knoweth your imagination, and what ye think in your hearts. Woe to them that sin, and would fain hide their sin! |

| Він знає намір ваш і що думаєте ви у серцях ваших, коли грішите і хочете сховати гріхи ваші. | Forasmuch as the Lord will exactly search out all your works, and he will put you all to shame. |
|

|
| Тому Господь зовсім ясно бачить усі діла ваші, і викриє усіх вас; | And when your sins are brought forth before men, ye shall be ashamed, and your own iniquities shall stand as your accusers in that day. |
|

| і ви будете посоромлені, коли гріхи ваші відкриються перед людьми, і беззаконня стануть звинувачувати у той день. | What will ye do? or how will ye hide your sins before God and his angels? |
|

| Що ви зробите і як сховаєте гріхи ваші перед Богом і ангелами Його? | Behold, God is the judge, fear him: leave off from your sins, and forget your iniquities, to meddle no more with them forever: so shall God lead you forth, and deliver you from all tribulation. |

| Ось, Бог — Суддя; бійтеся Його; залиште гріхи ваші і назавжди перестаньте чинити беззаконня, і Бог виведе вас і визволить від усякої скорботи. | For, behold, the burning wrath of a great multitude is kindled over you, and they shall take away certain of you, and feed you with that which is slain unto idols. |

| Бо ось, запалюється на вас лють численного полчища, і схоплять деяких з вас і умертвлять для принесення в жертву ідолам. | And they that consent unto them shall be had in derision and in reproach, and be trodden under foot of them. |

| Хто буде єдинодумним з ними, тих піддадуть вони посміянню, ганьбі і потоптанню. | For there shall be in diverse places, and in the next cities, a great insurrection upon those that fear the Lord. |

| Бо по всіх місцях і у сусідніх містах багато хто повстане проти тих, які бояться Господа. | They shall be like mad men, sparing none, but plundering and destroying them that still fear the Lord. |

| Будуть, як несамовиті, без пощади розкрадати і спустошувати все у тих, які бояться Господа. | For they shall waste and take away their goods, and cast them out of their houses. |
|

| Спустошать і розкрадуть майно їх, і з домів їхніх виженуть їх. | Then shall be manifest the trial of mine elect; even as the gold that is tried in the fire. |
|

|
| Тоді настане випробування обраним Моїм, як золото випробовується вогнем. | Hear, O ye mine elect, saith the Lord: behold, the days of tribulation are at hand, and I will deliver you from them. |

| Слухайте, улюблені Мої, — говорить Господь: ось перед вами дні скорботи, і від них Я визволю вас. | Be ye not afraid, neither doubt; for God is your guide: |

| Не бійтеся і не сумнівайтеся, бо вождь ваш — Бог. | and ye who keep my commandments and precepts, saith the Lord God, let not your sins weigh you down, and let not your iniquities lift up themselves. |

| Якщо будете виконувати заповіді і повеління Мої, — говорить Господь Бог, — то гріхи ваші не будуть тягарем, що придушує вас, і беззаконня ваші не переможуть вас. | Woe unto them that are fast bound with their sins, and covered with their iniquities, like as a field is fast bound with bushes, and the path thereof covered with thorns, that no man may travel through! |

| Горе тим, які зв’язані гріхами своїми і покриті беззаконнями своїми! Це — поле, яке заросло чагарником і через яке путь покритий терням, так що людина проходити не може: воно залишається і віддається вогню на знищення. | It is even shut off, and given up to be consumed of fire. |
