| А вищезгадуваний Симон, зробившись зрадником скарбів і батьківщини, зводив наклепи на Онію, ніби він сам заохочував Іліодора і був винуватцем зла. | This Simon now, of whom we spake afore, having been a betrayer of the money, and of his country, slandered Onias, as if he had terrified Heliodorus, and been the worker of these evils. |

| Благодійника міста, піклувальника за єдиноплемінників і ревнителя законів, він насмілився називати супротивником правителя. | Thus was he bold to call him a traitor, that had deserved well of the city, and tendered his own nation, and was so zealous of the laws. |

| Коли ж ворожнеча дійшла до того, що через одного з довірених людей Симона стали звершуватися вбивства: | But when their hatred went so far, that by one of Simon's faction murders were committed, |

| тоді Онія, бачачи, що боротьба небезпечна, що Аполлоній, як воєначальник Келе-Сирії і Фінікії, шаленіє, збільшуючи злобу Симона, | Onias seeing the danger of this contention, and that Apollonius, as being the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, did rage, and increase Simon's malice, |

| вирушив до царя, не як обвинувач співгромадян, але маючи на увазі користь кожного й усього народу, | he went to the king, not to be an accuser of his countrymen, but seeking the good of all, both public and private: |

| бо він бачив, що без царського захисту неможливо мирно влаштувати справи, і Симон не залишить свого безумства. | for he saw that it was impossible that the state should continue quiet, and Simon leave his folly, unless the king did look thereunto. |

| Але коли помер Селевк, і одержав царство Антиох, прозваний Єпифаном, тоді домагався священноначалля Іасон, брат Онії, | But after the death of Seleucus, when Antiochus, called Epiphanes, took the kingdom, Jason the brother of Onias laboured underhand to be high priest, |

|
| пообіцявши царю при побаченні триста шістдесят талантів срібла і з деяких прибутків вісімдесят талантів. | promising unto the king by intercession three hundred and threescore talents of silver, and of another revenue eighty talents: |

|
| Понад те обіцяв і ще підписати сто п’ятдесят талантів, якщо надано йому буде владою його влаштувати училище для тілесних вправ юнаків і писати єрусалимлян антиохійцями. | beside this, he promised to assign an hundred and fifty more, if he might have licence to set him up a place for exercise, and for the training up of youth in the fashions of the heathen, and to write them of Jerusalem by the name of Antiochians. |

| Коли цар дав згоду, і він одержав владу, негайно почав схиляти одноплемінників своїх до еллінських звичаїв. | Which when the king had granted, and he had gotten into his hand the rule, he forthwith brought his own nation to the Greekish fashion. |

| Він відкинув людинолюбно надані юдеям царські пільги за клопотанням Іоана, батька Евполемового, який посилав посольство до римлян про дружбу і союз; порушуючи законні установи, він вводив супротивні закону звичаї. | And the royal privileges granted of special favour to the Jews by the means of John the father of Eupolemus, who went ambassador to Rome for amity and aid, he took away; and putting down the governments which were according to the law, he brought up new customs against the law: |

| Навмисно під самою фортецею побудував він училище для тілесних вправ юнаків і, залучивши кращих з юнаків, підводив їх під соромітну покришку. | for he built gladly a place of exercise under the tower itself, and brought the chief young men under his subjection, and made them wear a hat. |

|
| Так з’явилася схильність до еллінізму і зближення з іноплемінництвом унаслідок непомірного нечестя Іасона, цього безбожника, а не первосвященика, | Now such was the height of Greek fashions, and increase of heathenish manners, through the exceeding profaneness of Jason, that ungodly wretch, and no high priest; |

| так що священики перестали бути ревними до служіння жертовнику і, нехтуючи храм і будучи недбалими до жертв, поспішали брати участь у противних закону іграх палестри за закликом кинутого диска. | that the priests had no courage to serve any more at the altar, but despising the temple, and neglecting the sacrifices, hastened to be partakers of the unlawful allowance in the place of exercise, after the game of Discus called them forth; |

| Ні у що ставили вони вітчизняну пошану; тільки еллінські почесті визнавали найкращими. | not setting by the honours of their fathers, but liking the glory of the Grecians best of all. |

| За це спіткало їх тяжке відвідування, і ті самі, з якими вони змагалися у способі життя і хотіли в усьому уподібнитися, стали їхніми ворогами і мучителями; | By reason whereof sore calamity came upon them: for they had them to be their enemies and avengers, whose custom they followed so earnestly, and unto whom they desired to be like in all things. |

| бо нечестиво чинити проти Божественних законів неможливо безкарно, як показує час, що настає після того. | For it is not a light thing to do wickedly against the laws of God; but the time following shall declare these things. |

| Коли святкувалися у Тирі п’ятирічні ігри, і цар був присутній там, | Now when the game that was used every fifth year was kept at Tyrus, the king being present, |
|

|
| тоді нечестивий Іасон послав туди глядачами антиохійців з Єрусалима, щоб доставити триста драхм срібла на жертву Геркулесу; але самі ті, що принесли, просили не вживати їх на жертву, вважаючи це непристойним, а призначити на інші витрати: | this ungracious Jason sent special messengers from Jerusalem, who were Antiochians, to carry three hundred drachms of silver to the sacrifice of Hercules, which even the bearers thereof thought fit not to bestow upon the sacrifice, because it was not convenient, but to be reserved for other charges. |

| отже, ним послані ці гроші у жертву Геркулесу від імені того, хто посилав, а тими, що принесли, вони обернені на влаштування гребних суден. | This money then, in regard of the sender, was appointed to Hercules' sacrifice; but because of the bearers thereof it was employed to the making of gallies. |

| Коли потім Аполлоній, син Менесфея, був посланий у Єгипет з нагоди сходження на престіл царя Птоломея Филометора, Антиох запідозрив його у ворожості до себе і почав намагатися убезпечити себе проти нього; тому, вирушивши в Іоппію, він прийшов до Єрусалима. | Now when Apollonius the son of Menestheus was sent into Egypt for the coronation of king Ptolemeus Philometor, Antiochus, understanding him not to be well affected to his affairs, provided for his own safety: whereupon he came to Joppe, and from thence to Jerusalem: |

| Чудово прийнятий Іасоном і містом, він увійшов при світильниках і вигуках, і звідти вирушив з військом у Фінікію. | where he was honourably received of Jason, and of the city, and was brought in with torch light, and with great shoutings: and so afterward went with his host unto Phenice. |

| Після трьох років Іасон послав Менелая, брата вищезгаданого Симона, щоб він доставив цареві гроші і зробив представлення деяких потрібних справ. | Three years afterward Jason sent Menelaus, the aforesaid Simon's brother, to bear the money unto the king, and to put him in mind of certain necessary matters. |

| Він же, представившись цареві і підлестивши його владі, захопив собі священноначалля, надбавивши триста талантів срібла проти Іасона. | But he being brought to the presence of the king, when he had magnified him for the glorious appearance of his power, got the priesthood to himself, offering more than Jason by three hundred talents of silver. |

| Одержавши від царя накази, він повернувся, не принісши з собою нічого гідного первосвященства, а тільки гнів жорстокого тирана і лють дикого звіра. | So he came with the king's mandate, bringing nothing worthy the high priesthood, but having the fury of a cruel tyrant, and the rage of a savage beast. |

| Так Іасон, який обманув свого брата, сам був обманутий іншим і, як вигнанець, відійшов у країну Аммонитську. | Then Jason, who had undermined his own brother, being undermined by another, was compelled to flee into the country of the Ammonites. |

| Менелай же одержав владу, але ніскільки не турбувався про обіцяні цареві гроші, хоч Сострат, начальник міської фортеці, і робив вимоги, | So Menelaus got the principality: but as for the money that he had promised unto the king, he took no good order for it, albeit Sostratus the ruler of the castle required it: |

| бо на ньому лежав збір данин; з цієї причини обоє вони були викликані царем. | for unto him appertained the gathering of the customs. Wherefore they were both called before the king. |

|
| Менелай залишив спадкоємцем первосвященства брата свого Лисимаха, а Сострат — Кратита, начальника кіпрян. | Now Menelaus left his brother Lysimachus in his stead in the priesthood: and Sostratus left Crates, who was governor of the Cyprians. |

|
| У той час, як це відбувалося, збунтувалися тарсяни і маллоти за те, що вони віддані були у дар Антиохиді, наложниці царській. | While those things were in doing, they of Tarsus and Mallos made insurrection, because they were given to the king's concubine, called Antiochis. |

| Тому цар поспішно вирушив, щоб дати лад справам, залишивши замість себе Андроника, одного з почесних сановників. | Then came the king in all haste to appease matters, leaving Andronicus, a man in authority, for his deputy. |

| Тоді Менелай, думаючи скористатися сприятливою нагодою, викрав із храму деякі золоті сосуди і подарував Андронику, а інші продав у Тирі й навколишніх містах. | Now Menelaus, supposing that he had gotten a convenient time, stole certain vessels of gold out of the temple, and gave some of them to Andronicus, and some he sold into Tyrus and the cities round about. |

| Достовірно дізнавшись про те, Онія викрив його і відійшов у безпечне місце — Дафну, що лежить біля Антиохії. | Which when Onias knew of a surety, he reproved him, and withdrew himself into a sanctuary at Daphne, that lieth by Antiochia. |

| Тому Менелай, заставши наодинці Андроника, просив його убити Онію; і він, прийшовши до Онії і підступно запевнивши його, давши руку з клятвою, хоч і був у підозрі, переконав його вийти зі сховища і негайно убив, не посоромившись правди. | Wherefore Menelaus, taking Andronicus apart, prayed him to get Onias into his hands; who being persuaded thereunto, and coming to Onias in deceit, gave him his right hand with oaths; and though he were suspected by him, yet persuaded he him to come forth of the sanctuary: whom forthwith he shut up without regard to justice. |

| Цим роздратовані були не тільки юдеї, але і багато хто з інших народів, і обурювалися на беззаконне убивство цього мужа. | For the which cause not only the Jews, but many also of other nations, took great indignation, and were much grieved for the unjust murder of the man. |

| Коли ж цар повернувся з країн Киликії, то юдеї, які були у місті, (*разом) з обуреними еллінами донесли йому, що Онію вбили безвинно. | And when the king was come again from the places about Cilicia, the Jews that were in the city, and certain of the Greeks that abhorred the fact also, complained because Onias was slain without cause. |

| Антиох, душевно засмучений і розчулений співчуттям, оплакував чесноти і велике благочестя померлого, | Therefore Antiochus was heartily sorry, and moved to pity, and wept, because of the sober and modest behaviour of him that was dead. |
|

|
| й у гніві на Андроника, негайно знявши з нього порфиру і роздерши одяг, наказав водити його по всьому місту і на тому самому місці, де він злочинно погубив Онію, стратити вбивцю; чим Господь і воздав йому заслужену кару. | And being kindled with anger, forthwith he took away Andronicus his purple, and rent off his clothes, and leading him through the whole city unto that very place, where he had committed impiety against Onias, there slew he the cursed murderer. Thus the Lord rewarded him his punishment, as he had deserved. |

| Коли ж у місті було вчинено багато святотатств Лисимахом, зі зволення Менелая, і рознеслася про те чутка, то народ повстав на Лисимаха, бо викрадено було багато золотих сосудів. | Now when many sacrileges had been committed in the city by Lysimachus with the consent of Menelaus, and the bruit thereof was spread abroad, the multitude gathered themselves together against Lysimachus, many vessels of gold being already carried away. |

| Коли повстав народ, сповнений гніву, то Лисимах озброїв до трьох тисяч чоловік і почав беззаконне насильство під проводом одного тирана, старого літами і не менш застарілого у безумстві. | Whereupon the common people rising, and being filled with rage, Lysimachus armed about three thousand men, and began first to offer violence; one Auranus being the leader, a man far gone in years, and no less in folly. |

| Побачивши таке насильство Лисимаха, одні схопили каміння, інші — товсті кілки, а деякі, хапаючи з землі пилюку, кидали всі разом на людей Лисимаха, | They then seeing the attempt of Lysimachus, some of them caught stones, some clubs, others taking handfuls of dust, that was next at hand, cast them all together upon Lysimachus, and those that set upon them. |

| і таким чином багатьох з них поранили, інших уразили, і всіх змусили тікати, а самого святотатця умертвили біля скарбниці. | Thus many of them they wounded, and some they struck to the ground, and all of them they forced to flee: but as for the churchrobber himself, him they killed beside the treasury. |

| Щодо цього відбувся суд над Менелаєм. | Of these matters therefore there was an accusation laid against Menelaus. |

| Коли цар прибув у Тир, то послані від зібрання старійшин три мужі представили йому скаргу. | Now when the king came to Tyrus, three men that were sent from the senate pleaded the cause before him: |

| Менелай, уже взятий, обіцяв Птоломею, синові Дорименовому, великі гроші, якщо він ублагає за нього царя. | but Menelaus, being now convicted, promised Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes to give him much money, if he would pacify the king toward him. |
|

|
| І Птоломей, відкликавши царя у притвор під приводом відпочинку, перекрутив справу. | Whereupon Ptolemee taking the king aside into a certain gallery, as it were to take the air, brought him to be of another mind: |
|

|
| Менелая, винуватця всього зла, звільнив від звинувачень, а нещасних, які, якби і перед скіфами говорили, були б відпущені незасудженими, засудив на смерть. | insomuch that he discharged Menelaus from the accusations, who notwithstanding was cause of all the mischief: and those poor men, who, if they had told their cause, yea, before the Scythians, should have been judged innocent, them he condemned to death. |

| Так швидко понесли несправедливу страту ті, що говорили на захист міста, народу і священних сосудів. | Thus they that followed the matter for the city, and for the people, and for the holy vessels, did soon suffer unjust punishment. |

| Тиряни, обурюючись на те, щедро доставили потрібне для поховання їх. | Wherefore even they of Tyrus, moved with hatred of that wicked deed, caused them to be honourably buried. |
|

| А Менелай, завдяки користолюбству начальників, утримав за собою владу і, зростаючи у злобі, зробився жорстоким ворогом громадян. | And so through the covetousness of them that were of power Menelaus remained still in authority, increasing in malice, and being a great traitor to the citizens. |
