| І звершив Іосія в Єрусалимі пасху Господу своєму, і закололи пасхального агнця в чотирнадцятий день першого місяця, | And Josias held the feast of the passover in Jerusalem unto his Lord, and offered the passover the fourteenth day of the first month; |
|

|
| поставивши священиків за чергами в облаченні у храмі Господньому. | having set the priests according to their daily courses, being arrayed in long garments, in the temple of the Lord. |
|

|
3
|
| І сказав левитам, священнослужителям Ізраїлевим: освятіть себе Господу для поставлення святого ковчега Господнього в храмі, який побудував цар Соломон, син Давидів. | And he spake unto the Levites, the holy ministers of Israel, that they should hallow themselves unto the Lord, to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built: |

| Не потрібно буде вам брати його на рамена; служіть тепер Господу Богу вашому, і піклуйтеся про народ Його Ізраїля, і влаштуйтеся за родами і поколіннями вашими, за розкладом Давида, царя Ізраїлевого, і за урочистістю Соломона, сина його, | and said, Ye shall no more bear the ark upon your shoulders: now therefore serve the Lord your God, and minister unto his people Israel, and prepare you after your families and kindreds, |

| і ставайте у святилищі, за родовими левитськими розрядами вашими перед братами вашими, синами Ізраїля, | according as David the king of Israel prescribed, and according to the magnificence of Solomon his son: and standing in the temple according to the several dignity of the families of you the Levites, who minister in the presence of your brethren the children of Israel, |

| заколіть за уставом пасхального агнця і приготуйте жертви для братів ваших і зробіть пасху за заповіддю Господньою, даною Мойсеєві. | offer the passover in order, and make ready the sacrifices for your brethren, and keep the passover according to the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto Moses. |

| І дав Іосія в дар народу, який там знаходився, тридцять тисяч агнців і козлів і три тисячі тельців; це за обітницею дано від царських стад народу і священикам і левитам. | And unto the people that was found there Josias gave thirty thousand lambs and kids, and three thousand calves: these things were given of the king's allowance, according as he promised, to the people, to the priests and to the Levites. |

| І дали Хелкія і Захарія й Ієиїл, що начальствують у храмі, священикам на пасху дві тисячі шістсот овець і триста волів. | And Helkias, Zacharias, and Syelus, the governors of the temple, gave to the priests for the passover two thousand and six hundred sheep, and three hundred calves. |

| І Ієхонія і Самей і Нафаниїл, брат його, й Асавія й Охиїл, й Іорам, тисячоначальники, дали левитам на пасху п’ять тисяч овець і сімсот волів. | And Jeconias, and Samaias, and Nathanael his brother, and Assabias, and Ochiel, and Joram, captains over thousands, gave to the Levites for the passover five thousand sheep, and seven hundred calves. |

| І коли це відбувалося, священики і левити благоліпно стояли за поколіннями і родовими перевагами, тримаючи опрісноки перед народом, | And when these things were done, the priests and Levites, having the unleavened bread, stood in very comely order according to the kindreds, |
|

|
| щоб приносити жертви Господу за написаним у книзі Мойсеєвій. І це було в ранній час. | and according to the several dignities of the fathers, before the people, to offer to the Lord, as it is written in the book of Moses: and thus did they in the morning. |
|

|
| І спекли пасхального агнця на вогні, як належало, а жертви зварили в мідних посудинах і казанах з пахощами, і віднесли всьому народові. | And they roasted the passover with fire, as appertaineth: as for the sacrifices, they sod them in brass pots and pans with a good savour, |

|
| А після того приготували для себе і для священиків, братів своїх, синів Аарона. | and set them before all the people: and afterward they prepared for themselves, and for the priests their brethren, the sons of Aaron. |
|

|

|
| Бо священики приносили жир до пізнього часу, а тому левити готували для себе і для священиків, братів своїх, синів Аарона. | For the priests offered the fat until night: and the Levites prepared for themselves, and the priests their brethren, the sons of Aaron. |
|

15
|
| Священноспівці ж, сини Асафові, знаходилися на місцях своїх, за встановленням Давида, й Асаф і Захарія й Еддинус, який був від царя. | The holy singers also, the sons of Asaph, were in their order, according to the appointment of David, to wit, Asaph, Zacharias, and Jeduthun, who was of the king's retinue. |

| І воротарям біля кожних воріт не дозволялося залишати своєї черги, тому що для них готували брати їхні, левити. | Moreover the porters were at every gate; it was not lawful for any to go from his ordinary service: for their brethren the Levites prepared for them. |

|
| І звершилося в той день все, що належало до жертвоприношення Господу при звершенні пасхи, | Thus were the things that belonged to the sacrifices of the Lord accomplished in that day, that they might hold the passover, |
|

|
18
|
| і до приношення всепалень на жертовнику Господньому, за повелінням царя Іосії. | and offer sacrifices upon the altar of the Lord, according to the commandment of king Josias. |
|

|
19
|
| І звершували сини Ізраїлеві, які у той час знаходилися там, пасху і свято опрісноків сім днів. | So the children of Israel which were present held the passover at that time, and the feast of sweet bread seven days. |
|
20
|
20
|
| І не звершувалося такої пасхи в Ізраїлі від часів Самуїла пророка. | And such a passover was not kept in Israel since the time of the prophet Samuel. |
|

|
21
|
| І жоден з усіх царів ізраїльських не звершував такої пасхи, яку звершив Іосія, і священики і левити, і юдеї і всі ізраїльтяни, які жили в той час у Єрусалимі. | Yea, all the kings of Israel held not such a passover as Josias, and the priests, and the Levites, and the Jews, held with all Israel that were found dwelling at Jerusalem. |

| У вісімнадцятий рік царювання Іосії звершена ця пасха. | In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josias was this passover kept. |
|

| І спрямовані були прямою путтю діла Іосії перед Господом від серця, повного благочестя. | And the works of Josias were upright before his Lord with an heart full of godliness. |
|

|
| Те ж, що було при ньому, описано в попередніх літописах про тих, хто грішив і чинив нечестя проти Господа більше за всякий народ і царство, і чим вони свідомо ображали Його, і за що слова Господа повстали проти Ізраїля. | As for the things that came to pass in his time, they were written in former times, concerning those that sinned, and did wickedly against the Lord above all people and kingdoms, and how they grieved him exceedingly, so that the words of the Lord rose up against Israel. |

| І після всіх цих діянь Іосії сталося, що фараон, цар Єгипетський, ішов воювати в Каркамис біля Євфрату, й Іосія вийшов назустріч йому. | Now after all these acts of Josias it came to pass that Pharaoh the king of Egypt came to raise war at Carcamys upon Euphrates: and Josias went out against him. |

| Цар Єгипетський послав до нього сказати: що мені і тобі, царю Юдейський? | But the king of Egypt sent to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, O king of Judea? |
|

|
| Не проти тебе посланий я від Господа Бога; війна моя на Євфраті, і нині Господь зі мною і Господь спонукує мене; відступи і не протився Господу. | I am not sent out from the Lord God against thee; for my war is upon Euphrates: and now the Lord is with me, yea the Lord is with me hasting me forward: depart from me, and be not against the Lord. |

| Але не повернувся Іосія на свою колісницю, а наважився воювати з ним, не послухавши слів Єремії пророка з уст Господа. | Howbeit Josias did not turn back his chariot from him, but undertook to fight with him, not regarding the words of the prophet Jeremy spoken by the mouth of the Lord: |

| І вступив з ним у битву на полі Мегиддо. І зійшлися начальники до царя Іосії. | but joined battle with him in the plain of Mageddo, and the princes came against king Josias. |
|

|
| І сказав цар слугам своїм: віднесіть мене з поля битви, тому що я дуже занеміг. І слуги його негайно винесли його із строю. | Then said the king unto his servants, Carry me away out of the battle; for I am very weak. And immediately his servants took him away out of the battle. |
|

|
| І зійшов він на другу колісницю свою і, повернувшись у Єрусалим, помер і похований у гробниці батьків своїх. | Then gat he up upon his second chariot; and being brought back to Jerusalem died, and was buried in his father's sepulchre. |
|

|
| І плакали за Іосією по всій Юдеї, плакав за Іосією і пророк Єремія, і начальники з дружинами оплакували його до цього дня. І це передано назавжди всьому роду Ізраїлевому. | And in all Jewry they mourned for Josias, yea, Jeremy the prophet lamented for Josias, and the chief men with the women made lamentation for him unto this day: and this was given out for an ordinance to be done continually in all the nation of Israel. |

| Це написано в літописі царів юдейських, і те, що зроблено Іосією, і слава його і його розуміння закону Господнього; попередні ж діла його і згадані нині описані в книзі царів ізраїльських і юдейських. | These things are written in the book of the stories of the kings of Judah, and every one of the acts that Josias did, and his glory, and his understanding in the law of the Lord; and the things that he had done before, and the things now recited, are reported in the book of the kings of Israel and Judea. |

| І взяв народ Ієхонію [Іоахаза], сина Іосії, і поставили його царем замість Іосії, батька його, коли йому було двадцять три роки. | And the people took Joachaz the son of Josias, and made him king instead of Josias his father when he was twenty and three years old. |

|
| І царював він у Юдеї і Єрусалимі три місяці, і відставив його цар Єгипетський, щоб не царювати йому в Єрусалимі. | And he reigned in Judea and in Jerusalem three months: and then the king of Egypt deposed him from reigning in Jerusalem. |

|
| І наклав на народ сто талантів срібла й один талант золота. | And he set a tax upon the land of an hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold. |
|

|
| І поставив цар Єгипетський Іоакима, брата його, царем Юдеї і Єрусалима. | The king of Egypt also made king Joacim his brother king of Judea and Jerusalem. |
|

|
| І зв’язав вельмож, а Заракина, брата його, відвів у Єгипет. | And he bound Joacim and the nobles: but Zaraces his brother he apprehended, and brought him out of Egypt. |
|

|
39
|
| Був же Іоаким двадцяти п’яти років, коли став царем над Юдеєю та Єрусалимом, і робив він лихе перед Господом. | Five and twenty years old was Joacim when he was made king in the land of Judea and Jerusalem; and he did evil before the Lord. |
|

|
| Проти нього вийшов Навуходоносор, цар Вавилонський, і зв’язав його мідними ланцюгами і відвів у Вавилон. | Wherefore against him Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon came up, and bound him with a chain of brass, and carried him into Babylon. |
|

|
41
|
| І, узявши деякі зі священних сосудів Господа, Навуходоносор переніс їх і поставив у своєму капищі у Вавилоні. | Nabuchodonosor also took of the holy vessels of the Lord, and carried them away, and set them in his own temple at Babylon. |
|

|
42
|
| Сказання про нього, про його розбещення і нечестя написані в книзі літописів царських. | But those things that are recorded of him, and of his uncleanness and impiety, are written in the chronicles of the kings. |
|
43
|
43
|
| І став царем замість нього Іоаким, син його; він був вісімнадцяти років, коли був призначений царем. | And Joacim his son reigned in his stead: he was made king being eighteen years old; |
|
44
|
44
|
| Царював же в Єрусалимі три місяці і десять днів, і зробив він лихе перед Господом. | and reigned but three months and ten days in Jerusalem; and did evil before the Lord. |
|

|
45
|
| І через рік Навуходоносор послав і відвів його у Вавилон разом зі священними сосудами Господа, | So after a year Nabuchodonosor sent and caused him to be brought into Babylon with the holy vessels of the Lord. |
|
46
|
46
|
| і призначив царем Юдеї та Єрусалима Седекію, який був двадцяти одного року. Царював він одинадцять років. | And made Sedecias king of Judea and Jerusalem, when he was one and twenty years old; and he reigned eleven years: |
|

|
47
|
| І робив він лихе перед Господом, не слухаючи слів, сказаних пророком Єремією від уст Господа. | and he did evil also in the sight of the Lord, and cared not for the words that were spoken unto him by the prophet Jeremy from the mouth of the Lord. |
|

|

|
| І, бувши зв’язаним від царя Навуходоносора клятвою в ім’я Господа, порушив клятву, відійшов і, озлобивши свою шию і серце своє, переступив закони Господа Бога Ізраїлевого. | And after that king Nabuchodonosor had made him to swear by the name of the Lord, he forswore himself, and rebelled; and hardening his neck, and his heart, he transgressed the laws of the Lord God of Israel. |

| Також і начальники народу і священиків чинили дуже нечестиво, перевершуючи у всіх нечистотах усіх язичників, і осквернили освячений у Єрусалимі храм Господній. | The governors also of the people and of the priests did many things against the laws, and passed all the pollutions of all nations, and defiled the temple of the Lord, which was sanctified in Jerusalem. |

| Бог батьків їхніх посилав вісників Своїх закликати їх до навернення, оскільки щадив Він їх і оселю Свою; | Nevertheless the God of their fathers sent by his messenger to call them back, because he spared them and his tabernacle also. |
|

|
| але вони глузували з вісників Його: в той самий день, в який Господь говорив, вони насміхалися з пророків Його, | But they had his messengers in derision; and, in the day that the Lord spake unto them, they made a sport of his prophets: |
|

|
| доки Він, розгнівавшись на народ Свій за нечестя, повелів повстати на них царям халдейським. | so far forth, that he, being wroth with his people for their great ungodliness, commanded the kings of the Chaldees to come up against them; |
|

|
53
|
| Вони вибили юнаків їхніх мечем навколо святого храму їхнього і не пощадили ні юнака, ні дівчини, ні старого, ні молодого, але всі були віддані в руки їхні. | who slew their young men with the sword, yea, even within the compass of their holy temple, and spared neither young man nor maid, old man nor child, among them; for he delivered all into their hands. |

| І всі священні сосуди Господні, великі і малі, і сосуди ковчега Господнього і царські скарби взяли вони і віднесли у Вавилон. | And they took all the holy vessels of the Lord, both great and small, with the vessels of the ark of God, and the king's treasures, and carried them away into Babylon. |
|

|
| І спалили дім Господній і зруйнували стіни Єрусалима і вежі його спалили вогнем, | As for the house of the Lord, they burnt it, and brake down the walls of Jerusalem, and set fire upon her towers: |
|

|
| і всю красу його перетворили на ніщо; тих же, хто залишився від меча, відвели у Вавилон. | and as for her glorious things, they never ceased till they had consumed and brought them all to nought; and the people that were not slain with the sword he carried into Babylon: |
|

|
| І вони були рабами його і синів його до владарювання персів, на сповнення слова Господнього з уст Єремії: | who became servants to him and his children, till the Persians reigned, to fulfil the word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremy: |
|

|
| доки земля не відсвяткує субот своїх, на весь час запустіння свого, упродовж сімдесяти років, вона буде суботствувати. | until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths, the whole time of her desolation shall she rest, until the full term of seventy years. |

|
| У перший рік царювання Кира Перського, на сповнення слова Господа з уст Єремії, | In the first year of Cyrus king of the Persians, that the word of the Lord might be accomplished, that he had promised by the mouth of Jeremy; |
|

|

|
| Господь подвигнув дух Кира, царя Перського, і він оголосив по всьому царству своєму усно і письмово: | the Lord raised up the spirit of Cyrus the king of the Persians, and he made proclamation through all his kingdom, and also by writing, |
|

|
3
|
| так говорить Кир, цар Перський: Господь Ізраїля, Господь Всевишній поставив мене царем вселенної | saying, Thus saith Cyrus king of the Persians; The Lord of Israel, the most high Lord, hath made me king of the whole world, |
|

|
4
|
| і повелів мені побудувати йому дім у Єрусалимі, який в Юдеї. | and commanded me to build him an house at Jerusalem in Jewry. |
|

|
5
|
| Отже, хто є з вас, із народу Його, нехай буде Господь його з ним, і нехай він, вирушивши в Єрусалим, який в Юдеї, будує дім Господа Ізраїлевого: Він є Господь, Який живе в Єрусалимі. | If therefore there be any of you that are of his people, let his Lord be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem that is in Judea, and build the house of the Lord of Israel: for he is the Lord that dwelleth in Jerusalem. |

| Тому скільки їх живе по місцях, жителі місця того нехай допоможуть їм золотом і сріблом, | Whosoever then dwell in the places about, let them help him, those, I say, that are his neighbours, with gold, and with silver, |
|

|
| дарунками коней і худоби й іншими приношеннями за обітницею на храм Господа в Єрусалимі. | with gifts, with horses, and with cattle, and other things, which have been set forth by vow, for the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem. |
|

|

|
| І піднялися старійшини племен коліна Іудиного і Веніамінового і священики і левити й усі, дух яких подвигнув Господь іти і будувати дім Господу в Єрусалимі; | Then the chief of the families of Judea and of the tribe of Benjamin stood up; the priests also, and the Levites, and all they whose mind the Lord had moved to go up, and to build an house for the Lord at Jerusalem, |

| а всі, що жили в сусідстві з ними, допомагали їм: сріблом і золотом, і конями і худобою і дуже багатьма приношеннями за обітницею багатьох, яких надихнув дух. | and they that dwelt round about them, and helped them in all things with silver and gold, with horses and cattle, and with very many free gifts of a great number whose minds were stirred up thereto. |

| І цар Кир виніс священні сосуди Господа, які Навуходоносор переніс з Єрусалима і поставив у своєму капищі. | King Cyrus also brought forth the holy vessels which Nabuchodonosor had carried away from Jerusalem, and had set up in his temple of idols. |
|

|
| Винісши ж їх, Кир, цар Перський, передав їх Мифридату, своєму хранителю скарбів, | Now when Cyrus king of the Persians had brought them forth, he delivered them to Mithridates his treasurer: |
|

|
| а через нього вони були передані Саманассару, князеві Юдеї. | and by him they were delivered to Sanabassar the governor of Judea. |
|

|
13
|
| Число ж їх було: узливальниць золотих тисяча, узливальниць срібних тисяча, срібних курильниць двадцять дев’ять, чаш золотих тридцять, срібних дві тисячі чотириста десять, й інших сосудів тисяча. | And this was the number of them; A thousand golden cups, and a thousand of silver, censers of silver twenty-nine, vials of gold thirty, and of silver two thousand four hundred and ten, and a thousand other vessels. |

| Усіх сосудів золотих і срібних принесено п’ять тисяч чотириста шістдесят дев’ять. | So all the vessels of gold and of silver, which were carried away, were five thousand four hundred threescore and nine. |
|

|
| І принесені вони Саманассаром і тими, що повернулися з ним з полону Вавилонського, у Єрусалим. | These were brought back by Sanabassar, together with them of the captivity, from Babylon to Jerusalem. |
|

|
| Під час же царювання Артаксеркса, царя Перського, Вилем і Мифридат, і Тавеллій і Рафим, і Веєлтефм і Самеллій писар та інші, які змовилися з ними, що жили в Самарії й інших місцях, написали йому такий лист: | But in the time of Artaxerxes king of the Persians Belemus, and Mithridates, and Tabellius, and Rathumus, and Beeltethmus, and Samellius the secretary, with the rest that were in commission with them, dwelling in Samaria and other places, wrote unto him against them that dwelt in Judea and Jerusalem this letter following; |

| Цареві Артаксерксу, господарю, раби твої Рафим, описувач подій, і Самеллій писар, та інші з ради їх, і судді, які знаходяться у Келе-Сирії і Фінікії. | To king Artaxerxes our lord, Thy servants, Rathumus the storywriter, and Samellius the scribe, and the rest of their council, and the judges that are in Celosyria and Phenice. |

| Нехай буде нині відомо господарю царю, що юдеї, які вийшли від вас до нас, прийшовши у Єрусалим, у це відступницьке і підступне місто, влаштовують площі його, відновлюють стіни і закладають підвалини храму. | Be it now known to the lord the king, that the Jews that are come up from you to us, being come into Jerusalem, that rebellious and wicked city, do build the marketplaces, and repair the walls of it, and do lay the foundation of the temple. |

| Отже, якщо це місто буде відбудоване і стіни його закінчені, то вони не тільки не погодяться платити податі, але і повстануть проти царів. | Now if this city and the walls thereof be made up again, they will not only refuse to give tribute, but also rebel against kings. |
|

|
| І оскільки уже почата побудова храму, то ми за благо визнали не нехтувати цим, | And forasmuch as the things pertaining to the temple are now in hand, we think it meet not to neglect such a matter, |
|

|

|
| але сповістити господаря царя, чи не благоугодно тобі подивитися в книгах батьків твоїх. | but to speak unto our lord the king, to the intent that, if it be thy pleasure, it may be sought out in the books of thy fathers: |
|

|

|
| Ти знайдеш запис про те у пам’ятних книгах, і довідаєшся, що це місто було зрадником і бентежило царів і міста, | and thou shalt find in the chronicles what is written concerning these things, and shalt understand that that city was rebellious, troubling both kings and cities: |
|

|
| а юдеї — відступники, які вічно робили в ньому змови, з якої причини і було спустошене це місто. | and that the Jews were rebellious, and raised always wars therein; for the which cause even this city was made desolate. |
|

|
24
|
| Отже, тепер сповіщаємо тебе, господарю царю, що коли побудується це місто і відновляться стіни його, то не буде для тебе проходу в Келе-Сирію і Фінікію. | Wherefore now we do declare unto thee, O lord the king, that if this city be built again, and the walls thereof set up anew, thou shalt from henceforth have no passage into Celosyria and Phenice. |

| Тоді цар написав у відповідь Рафиму, описувачу подій, і Веєлтефму і Самеллію писарю й іншим, які згодилися з ними, і жили в Самарії і Сирії і Фінікії, таке: | Then the king wrote back again to Rathumus the storywriter, to Beeltethmus, to Semellius the scribe, and to the rest that were in commission, and dwellers in Samaria and Syria and Phenice, after this manner; |

| прочитав я лист, який ви надіслали мені, і наказав розглянути; і знайдено, що це місто здавна повстає проти царів, | I have read the epistle which ye have sent unto me: therefore I commanded to make diligent search, and it hath been found that that city was from the beginning practising against kings; |

|
| і люди ці піднімають у ньому заколоти і війни, і були царі в Єрусалимі сильні і могутні, які володіли і збирали данину з Келе-Сирії і Фінікії. | and the men therein were given to rebellion and war: and that mighty kings and fierce were in Jerusalem, who reigned and exacted tributes in Celosyria and Phenice. |

| Отже, тепер я наказав заборонити цим людям будувати це місто, і стежити, щоб нічого більш не робилося | Now therefore I have commanded to hinder those men from building the city, and heed to be taken that there be no more done in it; |

| і щоб не мали подальшого успіху зловмисні дійства до занепокоєння царів. | and that those wicked workers proceed no further to the annoyance of kings. |

| Після прочитання написаного від царя Артаксеркса, Рафим і Самеллій писар і ті, що змовилися з ними, поспішно вирушили в Єрусалим з кіннотою й ополченням народу | Then king Artaxerxes his letters being read, Rathumus, and Semellius the scribe, and the rest that were in commission with them, removing in haste toward Jerusalem with a troop of horsemen and a multitude of people in battle array, began to hinder the builders; and the building of the temple in Jerusalem ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians. |

| І зробив цар Дарій великий бенкет своїм підданим і домашнім своїм і усім вельможам Мідії і Персії, | Now when Darius reigned, he made a great feast unto all his subjects, and unto all his household, and unto all the princes of Media and Persia, |

|
| і всім сатрапам і воєначальникам, і начальникам підвладних йому країн від Індії і до Ефіопії у ста двадцяти семи сатрапіях. | and to all the governors and captains and lieutenants that were under him, from India unto Ethiopia, in the hundred twenty and seven provinces. |
|

3
|
| І їли і пили і, наситившись, розійшлися; цар же Дарій пішов у спальню свою і спав, і потім прокинувся. | And when they had eaten and drunken, and being satisfied were gone home, then Darius the king went into his bedchamber, and slept, and soon after awaked. |
|

|
| Тим часом троє юнаків охоронців, які охороняли тіло царя, сказали один одному: | Then three young men, that were of the guard that kept the king's body, spake one to another; |
|

|
5
|
| нехай кожен з нас скаже одне слово про те, що сильніше за все? І чиє слово виявиться розумнішим за інше, тому цар Дарій дасть великі дарунки і велику нагороду. | Let every one of us speak a sentence: he that shall overcome, and whose sentence shall seem wiser than the others, unto him shall the king Darius give great gifts, and great things in token of victory: |

| І буде той одягатися в багряницю і пити з золотих сосудів, і спати на золоті, і їздити на колісниці з конями в золотих вуздах, носити на голові пов’язку з висону і намисто на шиї, | as to be clothed in purple, to drink in gold, and to sleep upon gold, and a chariot with bridles of gold, and an headtire of fine linen, and a chain about his neck: |

| і сяде він другим після Дарія за мудрість свою, і буде називатися родичем Дарія. | and he shall sit next to Darius because of his wisdom, and shall be called Darius's cousin. |
|

|
| І негайно, написавши кожен своє слово, запечатали і поклали під узголів’я царя Дарія і сказали: | And then every one wrote his sentence, sealed it, and laid it under the pillow of king Darius; |
|

|
9
|
| коли цар встане, подадуть йому це писання, і за ким визнає цар і троє вельмож перських, що слово його мудріше, тому дасться перевага, як написано. | and said that, when the king is risen, some will give him the writing; and of whose side the king and the three princes of Persia shall judge that his sentence is the wisest, to him shall the victory be given, as was appointed. |

| Один написав: сильніше за все вино. | The first wrote, Wine is the strongest. |
|

|
| Інший написав: сильніший цар. | The second wrote, The king is strongest. |
|

|
| Третій написав: сильніші жінки, а над усім здобуває перемогу істина. | The third wrote, Women are strongest: but above all things Truth beareth away the victory. |
|

| І ось, коли цар встав, подали йому це писання, і він прочитав. | Now when the king was risen up, they took their writings, and delivered them unto him, and so he read them: |
|

|
| І, пославши, покликав усіх вельмож Персії і Мідії, і сатрапів і воєначальників, і начальників областей і радників, | and sending forth he called all the princes of Persia and Media, and the governors, and the captains, and the lieutenants, and the chief officers; |
|

|
15
|
| і сів у дорадчій палаті, і прочитано було перед ними писання. | and sat him down in the royal seat of judgment; and the writing was read before them. |
|

|
16
|
| І сказав: покличте цих юнаків, нехай вони пояснять слова свої. І були покликані і ввійшли. | And he said, Call the young men, and they shall declare their own sentences. So they were called, and came in. |
|

|
17
|
| І сказав їм: поясніть нам написане. І почав перший, який сказав про силу вина, і говорив так: | And he said unto them, Declare unto us your mind concerning the writings. Then began the first, who had spoken of the strength of wine; |
|

|
| О, мужі! Яке сильне вино! Воно приводить у затьмарення розум усіх людей, які п’ють його; | and he said thus, O ye men, how exceeding strong is wine! it causeth all men to err that drink it: |
|
19
|
19
|
| воно робить розум царя і сироти, раба і вільного, бідного і багатого одним розумом; | it maketh the mind of the king and of the fatherless child to be all one; of the bondman and of the freeman, of the poor man and of the rich: |
|
20
|
20
|
| і всякий розум перетворює на веселість і радість, так що людина не пам’ятає ніякої печалі і ніякого боргу, | it turneth also every thought into jollity and mirth, so that a man remembereth neither sorrow nor debt: |
|

|
21
|
| і всі серця робить воно багатими, так що ніхто не думає ні про царя, ні про сатрапа, і всякого змушує воно говорити про свої таланти. | and it maketh every heart rich, so that a man remembereth neither king nor governor; and it maketh to speak all things by talents: |
|

|
| І коли сп’яніють, не пам’ятають про приязнь до друзів і братів і швидко оголюють мечі, | and when they are in their cups, they forget their love both to friends and brethren, and a little after draw out swords: |
|

23
|
| а коли протверезяться від вина, не пам’ятають, що робили. | but when they are from the wine, they remember not what they have done. |
|

|

|
| О, мужі! Чи не сильніше за все вино, коли змушує так чинити? І, сказавши це, замовк. | O ye men, is not wine the strongest, that enforceth to do thus? And when he had so spoken, he held his peace. |
|
Глава 4
|
Chapter 4
|

|
| І почав говорити другий, який сказав про силу царя. | Then the second, that had spoken of the strength of the king, began to say, |
|

|

|
| О, мужі! Чи не сильні люди, які володіють землею і морем і всім, що знаходиться в них? | O ye men, do not men excel in strength, that bear rule over sea and land, and all things in them? |
|
3
|
3
|
| Але цар перемагає і панує над ними і повеліває ними, і в усьому, що б не сказав їм, вони підкорюються. | But yet the king is more mighty: for he is lord of all these things, and hath dominion over them; and whatsoever he commandeth them they do. |
|

|
4
|
| Якщо скаже, щоб вони ополчалися один проти одного, вони виконують; якщо пошле їх проти ворогів, вони йдуть і руйнують гори і стіни і вежі, | If he bid them make war the one against the other, they do it: if he send them out against the enemies, they go, and break down mountains, walls, and towers. |
|

|
| й убивають і бувають вбитими, але не переступають слова царського; якщо ж переможуть, усе приносять царю, що одержать у здобич, і все інше. | They slay and are slain, and transgress not the king's commandment: if they get the victory, they bring all to the king, as well the spoil, as all things else. |
|

|
| І ті, які не ходять на війну і не воюють, але обробляють землю, після посіву, зібравши жниво, також приносять цареві | Likewise for those that are no soldiers, and have not to do with wars, but use husbandry, when they have reaped again that which they had sown, they bring it to the king, and compel one another to pay tribute unto the king. |

| і, примушуючи один одного, приносять цареві данину. | And yet he is but one man: if he command to kill, they kill; if he command to spare, they spare; |
|

|
| І він один, якщо скаже убити — убивають; якщо скаже відпустити — відпускають; сказав бити — б’ють; | if he command to smite, they smite; if he command to make desolate, they make desolate; if he command to build, they build; |
|

|
| сказав спустошити — спустошують; сказав будувати — будують; сказав зрубати — зрубують; сказав насадити — насаджують; | if he command to cut down, they cut down; if he command to plant, they plant. |
|

|
| і весь народ його і військо його підкорюються йому. Крім того, він лежить, їсть і п’є і спить, | So all his people and his armies obey him: furthermore he lieth down, he eateth and drinketh, and taketh his rest: |
|

|
| а вони стережуть довкола нього і не може ніхто відійти і робити справи свої, і не може не послухатися його. | and these keep watch round about him, neither may any one depart, and do his own business, neither disobey they him in any thing. |
|

|
| О, мужі! Чи не сильніший за всіх цар, коли так підкорюються йому? — І замовк. | O ye men, how should not the king be mightiest, when in such sort he is obeyed? And he held his tongue. |
|

|
| Третій же, який сказав про жінок і про істину, — це був Зоровавель, — почав говорити: | Then the third, who had spoken of women, and of the truth, (this was Zorobabel) began to speak. |
|

|
14
|
| О, мужі! Чи не великий цар, і багато хто з людей, і чи не сильне вино? Але хто панує над ними і володіє ними? чи не жінки? | O ye men, it is not the great king, nor the multitude of men, neither is it wine, that excelleth: who is it then that ruleth them, or hath the lordship over them? are they not women? |

|
| Жінки народили царя і весь народ, який володіє морем і землею; | Women have borne the king and all the people that bear rule by sea and land. |
|

|
| і ними народжені і ними вигодувані ті, які насаджують виноград, з якого робиться вино; | Even of them came they: and they nourished them up that planted the vineyards, from whence the wine cometh. |
|

|
17
|
| вони роблять одяг для людей і доставляють прикраси людям, і люди не можуть бути без дружин. | These also make garments for men; these bring glory unto men; and without women cannot men be. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Якщо зберуть золото і срібло і всякі коштовності, а потім побачать одну жінку, гарну лицем і красиву, | Yea, and if men have gathered together gold and silver, or any other goodly thing, do they not love a woman which is comely in favour and beauty? |
|
19
|
19
|
| залишивши все, спрямовуються до неї і, розкривши рот, дивляться на неї, і всі приліплюються до неї більше, ніж до золота і срібла і до всякої коштовної речі. | And letting all those things go, do they not gape, and even with open mouth fix their eyes fast on her; and have not all men more desire unto her than unto silver or gold, or any goodly thing whatsoever? |

|
| Чоловік залишає свого батька, який виховав, і країну свою і приліпляється до дружини своєї; | A man leaveth his own father that brought him up, and his own country, and cleaveth unto his wife. |
|

|
21
|
| і з дружиною залишає душу, і не пам’ятає ні батька, ні матері, ні країни своєї. | He sticketh not to spend his life with his wife, and remembereth neither father, nor mother, nor country. |
|
22
|
22
|
| І з цього слід вам пізнати, що жінки панують над вами. Чи не піднімаєте ви трудів і чи не напружуєте зусиль, і чи не віддаєте і чи не приносите всього дружинам? | By this also ye must know that women have dominion over you: do ye not labour and toil, and give and bring all to the woman? |

| Бере чоловік меч свій і вирушає, щоб виходити на дороги і грабувати і красти, і готовий плавати по морю і ріках, | Yea, a man taketh his sword, and goeth his way to rob and to steal, to sail upon the sea and upon rivers; |
|

|
| лева зустрічає, і в темряві блукає; але як тільки украде, забере й ограбує, відносить те до коханої. | and looketh upon a lion, and goeth in the darkness; and when he hath stolen, spoiled, and robbed, he bringeth it to his love. |
|

|
| І більше любить чоловік дружину свою, ніж батька і матір. | Wherefore a man loveth his wife better than father or mother. |
|

|
26
|
| Багато збожеволіли через жінок і зробилися рабами через них. | Yea, many there be that have run out of their wits for women, and become servants for their sakes. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Багато загинули і збилися зі шляху і згрішили через жінок. | Many also have perished, have erred, and sinned, for women. |
|

|
28
|
| Невже тепер не повірите мені? Чи не великий цар владою своєю? Чи не бояться всі країни доторкнутися до нього? | And now do ye not believe me? is not the king great in his power? do not all regions fear to touch him? |
|

|
| Я бачив його й Апамину, дочку славного Вартака, царську наложницю, яка сидить праворуч царя; | Yet did I see him and Apame the king's concubine, the daughter of the admirable Bartacus, sitting at the right hand of the king, |
|

|
| вона знімала вінець з голови царя і покладала на себе, а лівою рукою вдаряла царя по щоці. | and taking the crown from the king's head, and setting it upon her own head; she also struck the king with her left hand. |
|

|
31
|
| І, попри все те, цар дивився на неї, розкривши рот: якщо вона усміхнеться йому, усміхається і він; якщо ж вона розсердиться на нього, він пестить її, щоб помирилася з ним. | And yet for all this the king gaped and gazed upon her with open mouth: if she laughed upon him, he laughed also: but if she took any displeasure at him, the king was fain to flatter, that she might be reconciled to him again. |

| О, мужі! Як же не сильні жінки, коли так чинять вони? | O ye men, how can it be but women should be strong, seeing they do thus? |
|

| Тоді цар і вельможі глянули один на одного, а він почав говорити про істину. | Then the king and the princes looked one upon another: so he began to speak of the truth. |
|

|
34
|
| О, мужі! Чи не сильні жінки? Велика земля і високе небо, і швидке у своєму плині сонце, тому що воно в один день обходить коло неба і знову повертається на своє місце. | O ye men, are not women strong? great is the earth, high is the heaven, swift is the sun in his course, for he compasseth the heavens round about, and fetcheth his course again to his own place in one day. |

| Чи не великий Той, Хто звершує це? І істина велика і сильніша за все. | Is he not great that maketh these things? therefore great is the truth, and stronger than all things. |
|

|
| Вся земля взиває до істини, і небо благословляє її, і всі діла трясуться і тремтять перед нею. І немає в ній неправди. | All the earth calleth upon the truth, and the heaven blesseth it: all works shake and tremble at it, and with it is no unrighteous thing. |
|

|
| Неправедне вино, неправедний цар, неправедні жінки, несправедливі всі сини людські і всі діла їхні такі, і немає в них істини, і вони загинуть у неправді своїй; | Wine is wicked, the king is wicked, women are wicked, all the children of men are wicked; and such are all their wicked works, and there is no truth in them; in their unrighteousness also they shall perish. |

| а істина перебуває і залишається сильною у віках, і живе і володарює повік віку. | As for the truth, it endureth, and is always strong; it liveth and conquereth for evermore. |
|

| І немає в ній упереджености і розрізнення, але робить вона справедливе, віддаляючись від усього несправедливого і злого, і всі схвалюють діла її. | With her there is no accepting of persons or rewards: but she doeth the things that are just, and refraineth from all unjust and wicked things; and all men do well like of her works. |

| І немає в суді її нічого неправого; вона є сила і царство і влада і велич усіх віків: благословенний Бог істини! | Neither in her judgment is any unrighteousness; and she is the strength, kingdom, power, and majesty of all ages. Blessed be the God of truth. |

| І перестав він говорити. І всі виголосили тоді і сказали: велика істина і сильніша за все. | And with that he held his peace. And all the people then shouted, and said, Great is Truth, and mighty above all things. |
|

|
| Тоді цар сказав йому: проси, чого хочеш, більше написаного, і дамо тобі, тому що ти виявився наймудрішим, і будеш сидіти поруч зі мною і будеш називатися родичем моїм. | Then said the king unto him, Ask what thou wilt more than is appointed in the writings, and we will give it thee, because thou art found wisest; and thou shalt sit next me, and shalt be called my cousin. |

| Тоді сказав він царю: згадай обіцянку, дану тобою в той день, в який ти прийняв царство твоє, що ти побудуєш Єрусалим | Then said he unto the king, Remember thy vow, which thou hast vowed to build Jerusalem, in the day when thou camest to thy kingdom, |

| і повернеш усі сосуди, взяті з Єрусалима, які відібрав Кир, коли дав обітниці зруйнувати Вавилон, і обіцяв вислати їх туди. | and to send away all the vessels that were taken away out of Jerusalem, which Cyrus set apart, when he vowed to destroy Babylon, and to send them again thither. |

| А ти обіцяв побудувати храм, який спалили ідумеї, коли Юдея була спустошена халдеями. | Thou also hast vowed to build up the temple, which the Edomites burned when Judea was made desolate by the Chaldees. |

| І про це саме тепер я прошу тебе, господарю царю, і благаю тебе, і в цьому велич твоя: прошу тебе виконати обіцяне, що ти вустами твоїми обіцяв Цареві Небесному виконати. | And now, O lord the king, this is that which I require, and which I desire of thee, and this is the princely liberality proceeding from thyself: I desire therefore that thou make good the vow, the performance whereof with thine own mouth thou hast vowed to the King of heaven. |

| Тоді цар Дарій встав і поцілував його, і написав йому лист до всіх правителів і начальників областей і воєначальників і сатрапів, щоб вони пропустили його і з ним усіх, що йдуть будувати Єрусалим. | Then Darius the king stood up, and kissed him, and wrote letters for him unto all the treasurers and lieutenants and captains and governors, that they should safely convey on their way both him, and all those that go up with him to build Jerusalem. |

| Також написав лист до всіх місцевих начальників у Келе-Сирії і Фінікії і тим, що знаходяться на Ливані, щоб привозили з Ливану в Єрусалим кедрові дерева і допомагали йому будувати місто. | He wrote letters also unto the lieutenants that were in Celosyria and Phenice, and unto them in Libanus, that they should bring cedar wood from Libanus unto Jerusalem, and that they should build the city with him. |

| Писав про свободу і для всіх юдеїв, які вирушають із царства в Юдею, щоб ніхто з тих, хто має владу, обласний начальник і сатрап і правитель, не приходив до дверей їхніх, | Moreover he wrote for all the Jews that went out of his realm up into Jewry, concerning their freedom, that no officer, no ruler, no lieutenant, nor treasurer, should forcibly enter into their doors; |

| але щоб уся країна, якою вони володіють, вилучена була від данини, і щоб ідумеї залишили селища юдеїв, якими вони володіють; | and that all the country which they hold should be free without tribute; and that the Edomites should give over the villages of the Jews which then they held: |

| також щоб давали на побудову храму щорічно по двадцять талантів, доки не буде побудований; | yea, that there should be yearly given twenty talents to the building of the temple, until the time that it were built; |
|

|
| і для приношення на жертовник щоденних всепалень, зверх сімнадцяти приписаних, давали ще по десять талантів на рік; | and other ten talents yearly, to maintain the burnt offerings upon the altar every day, as they had a commandment to offer seventeen: |

| і щоб усім, хто вирушає з Вавилона, була воля будувати місто, як самим, так і нащадкам їхнім і всім священикам, які підуть. | and that all they that went from Babylon to build the city should have free liberty, as well they as their posterity, and all the priests that went away. |

| Писав також і про утримання і про священичий одяг, у якому служать. | He wrote also concerning the charges, and the priests' vestments wherein they minister; |
|

|
55
|
| Написав давати утримання і левитам до того дня, коли завершиться храм і буде побудований Єрусалим; | and likewise for the charges of the Levites, to be given them until the day that the house were finished, and Jerusalem builded up. |
|

|
| і всім, хто стереже місто, наказав давати платню і продовольство. | And he commanded to give to all that kept the city pensions and wages. |
|

|

|
| Відпустив і всі сосуди, які виділив Кир із Вавилона; і все, що повелів зробити Кир, і він повелів виконати і послати у Єрусалим. | He sent away also all the vessels from Babylon, that Cyrus had set apart; and all that Cyrus had given in commandment, the same charged he also to be done, and sent unto Jerusalem. |

| І коли вийшов юнак, то підняв лице своє до неба навпроти Єрусалима, дякуючи Царю Небесному, і сказав: | Now when this young man was gone forth, he lifted up his face to heaven toward Jerusalem, and praised the King of heaven, |

| від Тебе перемога і від Тебе мудрість, і Твоя слава, а я Твій раб. | and said, From thee cometh victory, from thee cometh wisdom, and thine is the glory, and I am thy servant. |
|

|
| Благословенний Ти, що дарував мені мудрість, і дякую Тобі, Господи, Боже батьків наших. | Blessed art thou, who hast given me wisdom: and to thee I give thanks, O Lord of our fathers. |
|

|
| І, взявши листи, вирушив і прийшов у Вавилон і оголосив усім братам своїм. | And so he took the letters, and went out, and came unto Babylon, and told it all his brethren. |
|

|
| І вони дякували Богу батьків своїх за те, що дарував їм волю і дозвіл | And they praised the God of their fathers, because he had given them freedom and liberty |

|
| іти і будувати Єрусалим і храм, на якому наречене ім’я Його. І раділи з музикою і веселістю сім днів. | to go up, and to build Jerusalem, and the temple which is called by his name: and they feasted with instruments of musick and gladness seven days. |

| Після цього були обрані до вирушення родоначальники за колінами їхніми, і дружини їхні і сини їхні і дочки їхні і раби їхні і рабині їхні з худобою їхньою. | After this were the principal men of the families chosen according to their tribes, to go up with their wives and sons and daughters, with their menservants and maidservants, and their cattle. |

| Дарій послав з ними тисячу вершників, доки вони не введуть їх у Єрусалим з миром, з музикою, з тимпанами і трубами. | And Darius sent with them a thousand horsemen, till they had brought them back to Jerusalem safely, and with musical instruments, tabrets and flutes. |
|

|
| І всі брати їхні веселилися, і цар дозволив їм іти разом. | And all their brethren played, and he made them go up together with them. |
|

|

|
| І ось імена мужів, які йшли за племенами їхніми у колінах за старшинством їх: | And these are the names of the men which went up, according to their families, among their tribes, after their several heads. |

| священики, сини Финеєса, сини Аарона, Ісус, син Іоседека, сина Сареєвого, та Іоаким, син Зоровавеля, сина Салафиїля з дому Давидового, з роду Фареса, коліна ж Іудового, | The priests, the sons of Phinees, the sons of Aaron: Jesus the son of Josedec, the son of Saraias, and Joacim the son of Zorobabel, the son of Salathiel, of the house of David, out of the kindred of Phares, of the tribe of Judah; |

| який говорив перед Дарієм, царем Перським, мудрі слова на другому році царювання його, в місяці Нисані, місяці першому. | who spake wise sentences before Darius the king of Persia in the second year of his reign, in the month Nisan, which is the first month. |

| Ось юдеї, які вийшли з полону переселення, яких переселив у Вавилон Навуходоносор, цар Вавилонський, | And these are they of Jewry that came up from the captivity, where they dwelt as strangers, whom Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon. |

|
| і які повернулися в Єрусалим і в інші місця Юдеї, кожен у своє місто, — вийшли з Зоровавелем та Ісусом, Неємією, Зареєм, Рисеєм, Енинеєм, Мардохеєм, Веельсаром, Асфарасом, Реєлієм, Роїмом, Вааною, начальниками їхніми. | And they returned unto Jerusalem, and to the other parts of Jewry, every man to his own city, who came with Zorobabel, and Jesus, Nehemias, Zaraias, Reesaias, Enenius, Mardocheus, Beelsarus, Aspharasus, Reelius, Roimus, and Baana, their guides. |

| Ось ті, що вийшли з Фермелефа і Фелерса: начальники їхні Хараафалан і Аалар. | These came up from Thermeleth and Thelersas, Charaathalan leading them, and Aalar; |

| Але вони не могли показати батьківщин своїх і родів, що вони від Ізраїля: синів Далана, сина Ваєнанового, синів Некодана, шістсот п’ятдесят два. | they could not shew their families or their stock, how they were of Israel: the sons of Dalan, the son of Baenan, the sons of Necodan, six hundred fifty and two. |

| І з священиків були такі, які відправляли священнослужіння, але не знайдені у списку: сини Овдія, сини Аквоса, сини Іадду, який узяв за дружину Авгію, з дочок Верзеллія, і називався його ім’ям. | And of the priests that usurped the office of the priesthood, and were not found: the sons of Obdia, the sons of Acbos, the sons of Jaddus, who married Augia one of the daughters of Phaezeldæus, and was named after his name. |

| І оскільки родовий запис їх після дослідження не знайдений у списку, то вони відлучені від священства. | And when the description of the kindred of these men was sought in the register, and was not found, they were removed from executing the office of the priesthood: |

| І сказав їм Неємія й Атфарія, щоб вони не брали участі у святинях, доки не постане первосвященик, облачений в урим і тумим. | for unto them said Nehemias and Attharias, that they should not be partakers of the holy things, till there arose up an high priest clothed with doctrine and truth. |

| Усіх же ізраїльтян від дванадцяти років і вище, крім рабів і рабинь, було сорок дві тисячі триста шістдесят; рабів їхніх і рабинь сім тисяч триста сорок сім; співців і псалмоспівців двісті сорок п’ять. | So of Israel, from them of twelve years old and upward, beside menservants and womenservants, they were all in number forty thousand, two thousand three hundred and sixty. |

| і дати в скарбницю храму на побудову тисячу мин золота і п’ять тисяч мин срібла і сто священичих одеж. | And certain of the chief of their families, when they came to the temple of God that is in Jerusalem, vowed to set up the house again in his own place according to their ability, |

| І оселилися священики і левити і деякі з народу в Єрусалимі й області його, а священноспівці й воротарі і весь Ізраїль у селищах своїх. | and to give into the holy treasury of the works a thousand pounds of gold, five thousand of silver, and an hundred priestly vestments. |

| Коли ж настав сьомий місяць, і сини Ізраїля були вже кожен у своєму володінні, зібралися всі одностайно на відкритому місці біля перших воріт на схід. | And so dwelt the priests and the Levites and the people in Jerusalem, and in the country, the singers also and the porters; and all Israel in their villages. |

| І встав Ісус, син Іоседека, і брати його священики, і Зоровавель, син Салафиїля, і брати його, і спорудили жертовник Богу Ізраїлевому, | But when the seventh month was at hand, and when the children of Israel were every man in his own place, they came altogether with one consent into the open place of the first gate which is toward the east. |

| І звершили свято кущів, як приписано законом, приносячи щоденні жертви, як належало, | And there were gathered unto them out of the other nations of the land, and they erected the altar upon his own place, because all the nations of the land were at enmity with them, and oppressed them; and they offered sacrifices according to the time, and burnt offerings to the Lord both morning and evening. |

| і потім безперестанні приношення і жертви субот і новомісяч і усіх святих свят. | Also they held the feast of tabernacles, as it is commanded in the law, and offered sacrifices daily, as was meet: |

| І всі ті, які дали обітниці Богу, з новомісяччя сьомого місяця почали приносити жертви Богу, хоч храм не був ще побудований. | and after that, the continual oblations, and the sacrifice of the sabbaths, and of the new moons, and of all holy feasts. |

| І давали срібло каменотесам і теслярам і питво і їжу, і візки сидонянам і тирянам, щоб вони привозили з Ливану кедрові дерева, доставляючи їх плотами в Іоппійську пристань, за наказом, даним від Кира, царя Перського. | And all they that had made any vow to God began to offer sacrifices to God from the first day of the seventh month, although the temple of the Lord was not yet built. |

| І на другий рік у другому місяці, після прибуття до храму Божого у Єрусалим, Зоровавель, син Салафиїля, й Ісус, син Іоседека, і брати їхні і священики, левити і всі, що прийшли у Єрусалим з полону, | And they gave unto the masons and carpenters money, meat, and drink, with cheerfulness. |

| поклали підвалини храму Божого в новомісяччя другого місяця другого року після прибуття їх в Юдею і Єрусалим | Unto them of Zidon also and Tyre they gave carrs, that they should bring cedar trees from Libanus, which should be brought by floats to the haven of Joppe, according as it was commanded them by Cyrus king of the Persians. |

І побудували будівельники храм Господа. | And in the second year and second month after his coming to the temple of God at Jerusalem began Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, and Jesus the son of Josedec, and their brethren, and the priests, and the Levites, and all they that were come unto Jerusalem out of the captivity: |

| І стали священики в облаченні з музичними інструментами і трубами, і левити, сини Асафа, з кимвалами, оспівуючи Господа і прославляючи Його за уставом Давида, царя Ізраїльського, | and they laid the foundation of the house of God in the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come to Jewry and Jerusalem. |

| і виголошували в піснях, прославляючи Господа, що благість Його і слава повіки над усім Ізраїлем. | And they appointed the Levites from twenty years old over the works of the Lord. Then stood up Jesus, and his sons and brethren, and Cadmiel his brother, and the sons of Emadabun, with the sons of Joda the son of Eliadud, with their sons and brethren, all Levites, with one accord setters forward of the business, labouring to advance the works in the house of the Lord. So the builders built the temple of the Lord. |

| І весь народ сурмив і взивав гучним голосом, прославляючи Господа за відновлення дому Господнього. | And the priests stood arrayed in their vestments with musical instruments and trumpets; and the Levites the sons of Asaph had cymbals, |

| А найстарші зі священиків і левитів і родоначальників, які бачили колишній храм, прийшли тепер на будіництво з плачем і гучним воланням, | singing songs of thanksgiving, and praising the Lord, according as David the king of Israel had ordained. |
|

|
| а багато хто з трубами і радісними голосними вигуками, | And they sung with loud voices songs to the praise of the Lord, because his mercy and glory is for ever in all Israel. |
|

|
| так що народ не міг чути труб через волання народне; хоча зібрання голосно сурмило, так що було чутно далеко. | And all the people sounded trumpets, and shouted with a loud voice, singing songs of thanksgiving unto the Lord for the rearing up of the house of the Lord. |

| І почули вороги коліна Іудиного і Веніамінового і прийшли дізнатися, що́ означає цей трубний звук. | Also of the priests and Levites, and of the chief of their families, the ancients who had seen the former house came to the building of this with weeping and great crying. |

| І дізналися, що ті, які повернулися з полону, будують храм Господу Богу Ізраїлевому. | But many with trumpets and joy shouted with loud voice, |
|

|
| І, приступивши до Зоровавеля й Ісуса і до родоначальників, говорять їм: будемо і ми будувати разом з вами; | insomuch that the trumpets might not be heard for the weeping of the people; yet the multitude sounded marvellously, so that it was heard afar off. |
|

|
| бо і ми подібно до вас слухаємо Господа вашого і приносимо Йому жертви від днів Асвакафаса, царя Ассирійського, який переселив нас сюди. | Wherefore when the enemies of the tribe of Juda and Benjamin heard it, they came to know what the noise of trumpets should mean. |

| Тоді сказав їм Зоровавель і Ісус і начальники племен ізраїльських: не з вами нам будувати дім Господу Богу нашому; | And they perceived that they that were of the captivity did build the temple unto the Lord God of Israel. |
|

|
| ми одні будемо будувати його Господу Богу Ізраїля, відповідно до того, як повелів нам Кир, цар Перський. | So they went to Zorobabel and Jesus, and to the chief of the families, and said unto them, We will build together with you. |
|

|
| Тоді народи тієї землі, нападаючи на тих, що жили в Юдеї й облягаючи їх, перешкоджали будівництву | For we likewise, as ye, do obey your Lord, and do sacrifice unto him from the days of Azbazareth the king of the Assyrians, who brought us hither. |

|
| і, підступом відволікаючи народ і роблячи заворушення, перешкоджали завершенню будівництва в усі часи життя царя Кира, і зупинили будівництво на два роки до того часу, коли царем став Дарій. | Then Zorobabel and Jesus and the chief of the families of Israel said unto them, It is not for us and you to build together an house unto the Lord our God. |

| У другий рік царювання Дарія Аггей і Захарія, син Аддо, пророки, пророкували юдеям, які були в Юдеї та Єрусалимі, від імені Господа Бога Ізраїлевого. | Now in the second year of the reign of Darius, Aggeus and Zacharias the son of Addo, the prophets, prophesied unto the Jews in Jewry and Jerusalem in the name of the Lord God of Israel, which was upon them. |

| Тоді встав Зоровавель, син Салафиїля, й Ісус, син Іоседека, і почали будувати дім Господа в Єрусалимі, у присутності пророків Господніх, які допомагали їм. | Then stood up Zorobabel the son of Salathiel, and Jesus the son of Josedec, and began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, the prophets of the Lord being with them, and helping them. |

| У цей час з’явився до них Сисинні, правитель Сирії і Фінікії, і Сафравузан і товариші їхні і сказали їм: | At the same time came unto them Sisinnes the governor of Syria and Phenice, with Sathrabuzanes and his companions, and said unto them, |

| з чийого дозволу ви будуєте цей дім і цю покрівлю, і все інше робите? І хто будівельники, які роблять це? | By whose appointment do ye build this house and this roof, and perform all the other things? and who are the workmen that perform these things? |
|

|
| Але старійшини юдейські знайшли милість у Господа, Який споглянув на полонення, | Nevertheless the elders of the Jews obtained favour, because the Lord had visited the captivity; |
|

|

|
| і їм не заборонили будувати, поки сповіщено буде про них Дарію. І отримана була відповідь. | and they were not hindered from building, until such time as signification was given unto Darius concerning them, and an answer received. |
|

|
7
|
| Ось список з листа, який Сисинні писав і який послали Дарію: Сисинні, правитель Сирії і Фінікії, і Сафравузан і товариші, начальники в Сирії і Фінікії, царю Дарію радуватися. | The copy of the letters which Sisinnes, governor of Syria and Phenice, and Sathrabuzanes, with their companions, rulers in Syria and Phenice, wrote and sent unto Darius; To king Darius, greeting: |

| Нехай буде все відомо господарю нашому царю, що ми, прийшовши в область Юдейську і ввійшовши в місто Єрусалим, знайшли в місті Єрусалимі старійшин юдейських, що повернулися з полону, | Let all things be known unto our lord the king, that being come into the country of Judea, and entered into the city of Jerusalem, we found in the city of Jerusalem the ancients of the Jews that were of the captivity |

| які будують новий великий дім Господу з дорогих тесаних каменів, кладучи в стіни дерева; | building an house unto the Lord, great and new, of hewn and costly stones, and the timber already laid upon the walls. |
|

|
| і роботи ці виконуються з ревністю, і справа успішно йде в руках їхніх і звершується з усією красою і старанністю. | And those works are done with great speed, and the work goeth on prosperously in their hands, and with all glory and diligence is it made. |
|

|
| Тоді ми запитали цих старійшин, говорячи: з чийого повеління ви будуєте цей дім і виконуєте ці роботи? | Then asked we these elders, saying, By whose commandment build ye this house, and lay the foundations of these works? |
|

|

|
| І так ми запитали їх, щоб сповістити тобі і написати тобі про начальників їхніх, і вимагали ми від них іменний список проводирів їхніх. | Therefore to the intent that we might give knowledge unto thee by writing, we demanded of them who were the chief doers, and we required of them the names in writing of their principal men. |
|

|
| Вони ж сказали нам у відповідь: ми раби Господа, Який створив небо і землю. | So they gave us this answer, We are the servants of the Lord which made heaven and earth. |
|

| І дім цей за багато років перед цим був побудований царем Ізраїльським, великим і сильним, і був закінчений. | And as for this house, it was builded many years ago by a king of Israel great and strong, and was finished. |
|

|
15
|
| Але оскільки батьки наші гріхами своїми прогнівили небесного Господа Ізраїлевого, то Він віддав їх у руки Навуходоносора, царя Вавилонського, царя халдеїв. | But when our fathers provoked God unto wrath, and sinned against the Lord of Israel which is in heaven, he gave them over into the power of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon, king of the Chaldees; |

| Вони, зруйнувавши дім цей, спалили, а народ відвели в полон у Вавилон. | who pulled down the house, and burned it, and carried away the people captives unto Babylon. |
|

|
| Але в першому році, коли царем став Кир над країною Вавилонською, цар Кир наказав побудувати дім цей. | But in the first year that king Cyrus reigned over the country of Babylon, Cyrus the king wrote to build this house. |
|

|

|
| І священні сосуди, золоті і срібні, які Навуходоносор виніс із храму Єрусалимського і поставив у своєму капищі, цар Кир знову виніс з капища Вавилонського і передав їх князеві Саманассару Зоровавелю. | And the holy vessels of gold and of silver, that Nabuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem, and had set them in his own temple, those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon, and they were delivered to Zorobabel, that is, to Sanabassarus the ruler, |

| І повелів йому віднести всі ці сосуди і покласти у Єрусалимському храмі і побудувати храм Господа на його місці. | with commandment that he should carry away the same vessels, and put them in the temple at Jerusalem; and that the temple of the Lord should be built in that place. |

|
| Тоді Саманассар, прийшовши, поклав підвалини дому Господа у Єрусалимі, і відтоді донині він будувався і не був завершений. | Then the same Sanabassarus, being come hither, laid the foundations of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem; and from that time to this being still building, it is not yet finished. |

| Отже, царю, якщо угодно, нехай пошукають у царських книгосховищах Кира, | Now therefore, if it seem good unto the king, let search be made among the records of king Cyrus: |

| і якщо виявиться, що будівництво дому Господнього у Єрусалимі звершується з волі царя Кира, й угодно буде це господарю царю нашому, нехай дано буде нам знати про те. | and if it be found that the building of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem hath been done with the consent of king Cyrus, and if our lord the king be so minded, let him signify unto us thereof. |

| Тоді цар Дарій наказав шукати в книгосховищах, що знаходяться у Вавилоні, і знайдено в Екбатанах, у місті, що знаходиться в Мідійській області, одне місце в пам’ятному записі, де написано: | Then commanded king Darius to seek among the records at Babylon: and so at Ecbatana the palace, which is in the country of Media, there was found a roll wherein these things were recorded. |

| Висота храму шістдесят ліктів, ширина шістдесят ліктів, із трьома домами із тесаних каменів і з одного нового, з місцевого дерева, а витрати робити з дому царя Кира, | whose height shall be sixty cubits, and the breadth sixty cubits, with three rows of hewn stones, and one row of new wood of that country; and the expences thereof to be given out of the house of king Cyrus: |

| і священні сосуди дому Господнього, золоті і срібні, які Навуходоносор виніс з дому Єрусалимського і переніс у Вавилон, повернути в дім Єрусалимський, щоб поставити їх там, де вони знаходилися. | and that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord, both of gold and silver, that Nabuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon, should be restored to the house at Jerusalem, and be set in the place where they were before. |

| Повелів також стежити Сисинні, правителеві Сирії і Фінікії, і Сафравузану і товаришам їхнім і поставленим у Сирії і Фінікії начальникам, щоб вони тримали себе осторонь від цього місця і залишили раба Господа Зоровавеля, князя Юдейського, і старійшин юдейських будувати цей дім Господа на його місці. | And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governor of Syria and Phenice, and Sathrabuzanes, and their companions, and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice, should be careful not to meddle with the place, but suffer Zorobabel the servant of the Lord, and governor of Judea, and the elders of the Jews, to build the house of the Lord in that place. |

| Я повелів повністю відбудувати його і стежити, щоб юдеям, які повернулися з полону, сприяли у повному закінченні дому Господнього | I have commanded also to have it built up whole again; and that they look diligently to help those that be of the captivity of the Jews, till the house of the Lord be finished: |

| і щоб із податей Келе-Сирії і Фінікії справно давали для цих людей, на жертви Господу, князю Зоровавелю, на тельців, баранів і агнців. | and out of the tribute of Celosyria and Phenice, a portion carefully to be given these men for the sacrifices of the Lord, that is, to Zorobabel the governor, for bullocks, and rams, and lambs; |

| Так само, щоб постійно щороку беззаперечно давали пшеницю, сіль, вино й олію, як скажуть священики, які знаходяться в Єрусалимі, скільки витрачається кожного дня; | and also corn, salt, wine, and oil, and that continually every year without further question, according as the priests that be in Jerusalem shall signify to be daily spent: |

| щоб приносили Всевишньому Богу жертви за царя і за дітей його і молилися за життя їх. | that offerings may be made to the most high God for the king and for his children, and that they may pray for their lives. |
|

|
| Притому оголосити, що коли хто переступить або порушить що-небудь з написаного, то нехай буде взяте дерево з його власних, і він буде повішений на ньому, а майно його стане царським. | And he commanded that whosoever should transgress, yea, or make light of any thing herein written, out of his own house should a tree be taken, and he thereon be hanged, and all his goods seized for the king. |

| За це і Господь, Якого ім’я призивається там, нехай погубить усякого царя і народ, який простягне руку свою, щоб перешкодити або зробити яке-небудь зло цьому дому Господа у Єрусалимі. | The Lord therefore, whose name is there called upon, utterly destroy every king and nation, that stretcheth out his hand to hinder or endamage that house of the Lord in Jerusalem. |

| Тоді Сисинні, правитель Келе-Сирії і Фінікії, і Сафравузан і товариші їхні, виконуючи повеління царя Дарія, | Then Sisinnes the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, and Sathrabuzanes, with their companions, following the commandments of king Darius, |
|

|
| ретельно взялися за святу справу, допомагаючи старійшинам і священноначальникам юдейським. | did very carefully oversee the holy works, assisting the ancients of the Jews and governors of the temple. |
|

|
3
|
| І успішно йшла свята справа, за пророцтвами пророків Аггея і Захарії. | And so the holy works prospered, when Aggeus and Zacharias the prophets prophesied. |
|
4
|
4
|
| І звершили все за повелінням Господа Бога Ізраїлевого і з волі Кира, Дарія й Артаксеркса, царів перських. | And they finished these things by the commandment of the Lord God of Israel; and with the consent of Cyrus, Darius, and Artaxerxes, kings of Persia, |
|

|
5
|
| Закінчений святий дім до двадцять третього дня місяця Адара, на шостому році царя Дарія. | the holy house was finished in the three and twentieth day of the month Adar, in the sixth year of king Darius. |
|

|
6
|
| І зробили сини Ізраїля, священики і левити та інші, що повернулися з полону, які були приставлені, усе за написаним у книзі Мойсея. | And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and others that were of the captivity, that were added unto them, did according to the things written in the book of Moses. |
|

|
7
|
| І принесли в жертву на відновлення храму Господнього сто волів, двісті баранів, чотириста агнців, | And to the dedication of the temple of the Lord they offered an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; |
|
8
|
8
|
| дванадцять козлів за гріхи усього Ізраїля, за числом дванадцяти колін ізраїльських. | and twelve goats for the sin of all Israel, according to the number of the chief of the tribes of Israel. |
|

|
9
|
| І стояли священики і левити за племенами, в облаченні, при ділах Господа Бога Ізраїлевого, згідно з книгою Мойсеєвою, і воротарі біля кожних воріт. | The priests also and the Levites stood arrayed in their vestments, according to their kindreds, in the service of the Lord God of Israel, according to the book of Moses: and the porters at every gate. |

| І влаштували сини Ізраїлеві, які повернулися з полону, пасху в чотирнадцятий день першого місяця, коли очистилися священики і левити разом, | And the children of Israel that were of the captivity held the passover the fourteenth day of the first month, after that the priests and the Levites were sanctified, |
|

|
11
|
| і всі сини полону, тому що очистилися, бо левити усі разом очистилися. | together with all the children of the captivity; for they were sanctified, because the Levites were all sanctified together. |
|

|
12
|
| І закололи пасхальних агнців для всіх синів полону, для братів своїх, священиків, і для себе самих. | And so they offered the passover for all them of the captivity, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves. |
|

|
13
|
| І їли сини Ізраїлеві, які повернулися з полону, всі, що відійшли від мерзот народів землі, знайшли Господа. | And the children of Israel that came out of the captivity did eat, even all they that had separated themselves from the abominations of the people of the land, and sought the Lord. |
|

|
14
|
| І святкували свято опрісноків сім днів, радіючи перед Господом, | And they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days, making merry before the Lord, |
|

|
15
|
| що Він навернув до них серце царя Ассирійського, щоб зміцнити руки їхні на діла Господа Бога Ізраїлевого. | for that he had turned the counsel of the king of Assyria toward them, to strengthen their hands in the works of the Lord God of Israel. |

| Після цих подій, у царювання Артаксеркса, царя Перського, прийшов Ездра, син Азарії, Зехрія, Хелкія, Салима, | And after these things, when Artaxerxes the king of the Persians reigned, came Esdras the son of Azaraias, the son of Zechrias, the son of Helchias, the son of Salum, |

| Саддука, Ахитова, Амарія, Озії, Мемерофа, Зарея, Сауя, Вокка, Ависая, Финеєса, Єлеазара, Аарона первосвященика. | the son of Sadduc, the son of Achitob, the son of Amarias, the son of Ozias, the son of Boccas, the son of Abisai, the son of Phinees, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the chief priest. |

| Цей Ездра прийшов з Вавилона, як вчений, що знається на законі Мойсеєвому, даному Господом Богом Ізраїлевим, | This Esdras went up from Babylon, as a scribe, being very ready in the law of Moses, that was given by the God of Israel. |
|

|
| і зробив йому цар честь, бо він здобув у нього благовоління до всіх своїх прохань. | And the king did him honour: for he found grace in his sight in all his requests. |
|

|
5
|
| І прийшли з ним у Єрусалим деякі з синів Ізраїля, зі священиків і левитів, священноспівців і воротарів і служителів при храмі, | There went up with him also certain of the children of Israel, of the priests, of the Levites, of the holy singers, porters, and ministers of the temple, unto Jerusalem, |

| на сьомому році царювання Артаксеркса, у п’ятий місяць того ж сьомого року царювання; бо вони, вийшовши з Вавилона в новомісяччя першого місяця, прийшли у Єрусалим, за даним їм Господом благосприянням на шляху, у новомісяць п’ятий. | in the seventh year of the reign of Artaxerxes, in the fifth month, this was the king's seventh year; for they went from Babylon in the first day of the first month, and came to Jerusalem, according to the prosperous journey which the Lord gave to him. |

| Ездра ж докладав великі турботи, щоб нічого не опустити з закону Господнього і заповідей, щоб навчити весь Ізраїль постанов і судів. | For Esdras had very great skill, so that he omitted nothing of the law and commandments of the Lord, but taught all Israel the ordinances and judgments. |
|

|
| Прийшло і письмове повеління, дане від царя Артаксеркса Ездрі священику і читцю закону Господнього, таке: | Now the copy of the commission, which was written from Artaxerxes the king, and came to Esdras the priest and reader of the law of the Lord, is this that followeth; |

|
| Цар Артаксеркс Ездрі священику і читцю закону Господнього радуватися. | King Artaxerxes unto Esdras the priest and reader of the law of the Lord sendeth greeting: |

| Розсудивши чоловіколюбно, я повелів, щоб ті, що бажають, з народу юдейського і зі священиків і левитів, які знаходяться в нашому царстві, добровільно йшли разом з тобою у Єрусалим. | Having determined to deal graciously, I have given order, that such of the nation of the Jews, and of the priests and Levites, being within our realm, as are willing and desirous, should go with thee unto Jerusalem. |

|
| Отже, хто тільки бажає, нехай зберуться і йдуть, як розсудилося мені і моїм семи найближчим радникам; | As many therefore as have a mind thereunto, let them depart with thee, as it hath seemed good both to me and my seven friends the counsellors; |
|

|
| нехай побачать, що робиться в Юдеї та Єрусалимі згідно з законом Господнім, | that they may look unto the affairs of Judea and Jerusalem, agreeably to that which is in the law of the Lord; |
|

|

|
| і віднесуть у Єрусалим дари Господу Ізраїля, які обіцяв я і мої наближені, і всяке золото і срібло, яке знайдеться в країні Вавилонській, для Господа в Єрусалим, разом з дарами від народу на храм Господа Бога їхнього, що знаходиться в Єрусалимі; | and carry the gifts unto the Lord of Israel to Jerusalem, which I and my friends have vowed, and all the gold and silver that in the country of Babylon can be found, to the Lord in Jerusalem, |

| золото ж і срібло — на волів, баранів і агнців та інше, що до цього відноситься, | with that also which is given of the people for the temple of the Lord their God at Jerusalem: and that silver and gold may be collected for bullocks, rams, and lambs, and things thereunto appertaining; |

|
| щоб возносити жертви Господу на жертовнику Господа Бога їхнього у Єрусалимі. | to the end that they may offer sacrifices unto the Lord upon the altar of the Lord their God, which is in Jerusalem. |
|

|
16
|
| І все, чого б не захотів ти з братами твоїми зробити на це золото і срібло, роби з волі Бога твого. | And whatsoever thou and thy brethren will do with the silver and gold, that do, according to the will of thy God. |
|
17
|
17
|
| І священні сосуди Господні, дані тобі для вживання в храмі Бога твого у Єрусалимі, постав перед Господом, Богом твоїм. | And the holy vessels of the Lord, which are given thee for the use of the temple of thy God, which is in Jerusalem, thou shalt set before thy God in Jerusalem. |

|
| І інше, що буде потрібно тобі для потреб храму Бога твого, давай з царської скарбниці. | And whatsoever thing else thou shalt remember for the use of the temple of thy God, thou shalt give it out of the king's treasury. |
|

|
| І ось я, цар Артаксеркс, повелів хранителям скарбниць Сирії і Фінікії, щоб вони всі, чого потребує Ездра священик і читець закону Всевишнього Бога, справно давали йому, навіть до ста талантів срібла, | And I king Artaxerxes have also commanded the keepers of the treasures in Syria and Phenice, that whatsoever Esdras the priest and the reader of the law of the most high God shall send for, they should give it him with speed, |

| також пшениці до ста ко́рів і вина до ста мір. | to the sum of an hundred talents of silver, likewise also of wheat even to an hundred cors, and an hundred pieces of wine, and other things in abundance. |
|

|
| І все інше за законом Божим ретельно нехай приноситься Всевишньому Богу, щоб не було гніву на царство царя і синів його. | Let all things be performed after the law of God diligently unto the most high God, that wrath come not upon the kingdom of the king and his sons. |
|

|
22
|
| І ще говорю вам, щоб на всіх священиках і левитах, і священноспівцях і воротарях, і служителях храму і на писарях цього храму не було ніякої данини або іншого податку, і щоб ніхто не мав влади накладати будь-що на них. | I command you also, that ye require no tax, nor any other imposition, of any of the priests, or Levites, or holy singers, or porters, or ministers of the temple, or of any that have doings in this temple, and that no man have authority to impose any thing upon them. |

| А ти, Ездро, за мудрістю Божою, постав начальників і суддів, щоб вони судили по всій Сирії і Фінікії всіх, хто знає закон Бога твого, а тих, хто не знає, навчай: | And thou, Esdras, according to the wisdom of God ordain judges and justices, that they may judge in all Syria and Phenice all those that know the law of thy God; and those that know it not thou shalt teach. |

| і всі ті, які будуть переступати закон Бога твого, або царський, нехай будуть обов’язково покарані, чи смерти, чи тілесним покаранням, грошовою пенею або вигнанням. | And whosoever shall transgress the law of thy God, and of the king, shall be punished diligently, whether it be by death, or other punishment, by penalty of money, or by imprisonment. |

| Тоді сказав учений Ездра: благословенний єдиний Господь Бог батьків моїх, що поклав на серце царю прославити дім Його у Єрусалимі | Then said Esdras the scribe, Blessed be the only Lord God of my fathers, who hath put these things into the heart of the king, to glorify his house that is in Jerusalem: |

| і вшанував мене перед царем і радниками і всіма наближеними і вельможами його. | and hath honoured me in the sight of the king, and his counsellors, and all his friends and nobles. |
|

|
| І я підбадьорився допомогою Господа Бога мого, і зібрав мужів ізраїльських, щоб вони йшли зі мною. | Therefore was I encouraged by the help of the Lord my God, and gathered together men of Israel to go up with me. |
|

|
| І ось начальники за племенами їхніми і за старійшинством, які вийшли зі мною з Вавилона в царювання царя Артаксеркса: | And these are the chief according to their families and several dignities, that went up with me from Babylon in the reign of king Artaxerxes: |

| із синів Финеєса — Гирсон; із синів Іфамара — Гамалиїл; із синів Давида — Латтус, син Сехенія; | of the sons of Phinees, Gerson: of the sons of Ithamar, Gamaliel: of the sons of David, Lettus the son of Sechenias: |

|
| із синів Фороса — Захарія, і з ним записалися сто п’ятдесят людей; | of the sons of Pharez, Zacharias; and with him were counted an hundred and fifty men: |

| із синів Фаафмоава — Елиаонія, син Зарея, і з ним двісті людей; | of the sons of Pahath Moab, Eliaonias, the son of Zaraias, and with him two hundred men: |

| із синів Зафоя — Сехенія, син Ієзила, і з ним триста людей; із синів Адина — Овиф, син Іонафа, і з ним двісті п’ятдесят людей; | of the sons of Zathoe, Sechenias the son of Jezelus, and with him three hundred men: of the sons of Adin, Obeth the son of Jonathan, and with him two hundred and fifty men: |

| із синів Ілама — Ієсія, син Гофолія, і з ним сімдесят людей; | of the sons of Elam, Josias son of Gotholias, and with him seventy men: |

| із синів Сафатії — Зараія, син Михаїла, і з ним сімдесят людей; | of the sons of Saphatias, Zaraias son of Michael, and with him threescore and ten men: |

| із синів Іоава — Авадія, син Ієзила, і з ним двісті дванадцять людей; | of the sons of Joab, Abadias son of Jezelus, and with him two hundred and twelve men: |

| із синів Ванія — Асалимоф, син Іосафія, і з ним сто шістдесят людей; | of the sons of Bania, Salimoth son of Josaphias, and with him an hundred and threescore men: |

| із синів Вавія — Захарія, син Вивая, і з ним двадцять вісім людей; | of the sons of Babi, Zacharias son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight men: |

| із синів Астафа — Іоан, син Акатана, і з ним сто десять людей; | of the sons of Astath, Johannes son of Acatan, and with him an hundred and ten men: |

|
| із синів Адоникама — останні, і ось імена їхні: Елифала, син Ієуїла, і Самей, і з ними сімдесят людей; | of the sons of Adonikam the last, and these are the names of them, Eliphalet, son of Geuel, and Samaias, and with them seventy men: |

| із синів Вагоя — Уфий, син Істалкура, і з ним сімдесят людей. | of the sons of Bago, Uthi the son of Istalcurus, and with him seventy men. |

|
| І я зібрав їх біля ріки, яка називається Феран, і ми пробули там три дні, і я оглянув їх. | And these I gathered together to the river called Theras, where we pitched our tents three days: and then I surveyed them. |
|

|
| І не знайшовши там нікого зі священиків і левитів, | But when I had found there none of the priests and Levites, |
|

|
43
|
| я послав до Єлеазара й Ідуїла, і Маасмана, й Алнафана, і Мамея, і Самея, й Іоривона, Нафана, Еннатана, Захарії і Мосоллама, які є начальниками і вченими, | then sent I unto Eleazar, and Iduel, and Mæa, and Masman, |

| і сказав їм, щоб вони пішли до Доддея, який начальствує в місцевості Касиф’є, | and Alnathan, and Samaias, and Joribas, and Nathan, Ennatan, Zacharias, and Mosollamus, principal men and learned. |

| наказавши їм сказати Доддею і братам його і тим, що знаходяться в тій місцевості Касиф’є, щоб вони прислали нам священиків для дому Господа Бога нашого. | And I bade them that they should go unto Loddeus the captain, who was in the place of the treasury: |

| І вони привели до нас могутньою рукою Господа Бога нашого мужів-знавців із синів Мооли, сина Левія, сина Ізраїлевого, Асевивея і синів його і братів його, яких було вісімнадцять чоловік; | and commanded them that they should speak unto Loddeus, and to his brethren, and to the treasurers in that place, to send us such men as might execute the priests' office in the house of the Lord. |

| і Асевію й Аннуя й Осея брата із синів Ханунея, і синів їхніх двадцять чоловік; | And by the mighty hand of our Lord they brought unto us skilful men of the sons of Mooli the son of Levi, the son of Israel, Asebebia, and his sons, and his brethren, who were eighteen. |

| і зі служителів храму, яких дав Давид і начальники на служіння левитам, двісті двадцять служителів, з поіменним списком усіх. | And Asebia, and Annuus, and Osaias his brother, of the sons of Chanuneus, and their sons, were twenty men. |

| І оголосив я там піст перед Господом Богом нашим, | And of the servants of the temple whom David had ordained, and the principal men for the service of the Levites to wit, the servants of the temple, two hundred and twenty, the catalogue of whose names were shewed. |

| щоб виблагати у Бога благополучний шлях нам і супутникам нашим і дітям нашим і худобі, | And there I vowed a fast unto the young men before our Lord, to desire of him a prosperous journey both for us and them that were with us, for our children, and for the cattle: |

| бо я посоромився просити у царя піших і кінних і провідників для безпеки від супротивників наших; | for I was ashamed to ask the king footmen, and horsemen, and conduct for safeguard against our adversaries. |
|

|
| тому що ми сказали цареві, що сила Господа нашого буде з тими, хто має Його в усякому доброму починанні. | For we had said unto the king, that the power of the Lord our God should be with them that seek him, to support them in all ways. |
|

|
| Отже, ми знову помолилися Господу Богу нашому про все це й одержали від Нього велику милість. | And again we besought our Lord as touching these things, and found him favourable unto us. |
|

|
| І відокремив я з родоначальників і священиків дванадцять чоловік, Есеревію і Самію, і з ними братів їхніх десять чоловік. | Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Esebrias, and Samias, and ten men of their brethren with them: |

| І зважив при них срібло і золото і священні сосуди дому Господа нашого, які дав у дарунок цар і радники його, і вельможі і всі ізраїльтяни. | and I weighed them the gold, and the silver, and the holy vessels of the house of our Lord, which the king, and his council, and the princes, and all Israel, had given. |

| І, зваживши, передав їм срібла шістсот п’ятдесят талантів і сосудів срібних сто талантів, і золота сто талантів, сосудів золотих двадцять і сосудів мідних з відмінної міді, що блищать, як золото, дванадцять. | And when I had weighed it, I delivered unto them six hundred and sixty talents of silver, and silver vessels of an hundred talents, and an hundred talents of gold, |

| І сказав їм: і ви святі Господу, і сосуди ці святі, так само, як і золото і срібло, дане за обітницею Господу, Богу батьків наших. | and twenty golden vessels, and twelve vessels of brass, even of fine brass, glittering like gold. |

| Пильнуйте і бережіть їх, доки не здасте старшим священикам і левитам і родоначальникам ізраїльським у Єрусалимі, у сосудосховище дому Бога нашого. | And I said unto them, Both ye are holy unto the Lord, and the vessels are holy, and the gold and the silver is a vow unto the Lord, the Lord of our fathers. |

| І священики і левити, прийнявши срібло і золото і сосуди для Єрусалима, внесли їх у храм Господа. | Watch ye, and keep them till ye deliver them to the chief of the priests and Levites, and to the principal men of the families of Israel, in Jerusalem, into the chambers of the house of our God. |

| І, піднявшись від ріки Феран у дванадцятий день першого місяця, ми йшли у Єрусалим під могутньою рукою Господа над нами, і Він визволяв нас від початку путі від усякого ворога, і ми прийшли у Єрусалим. | So the priests and the Levites, who had received the silver and the gold and the vessels that were in Jerusalem, brought them into the temple of the Lord. |

| І тут, після трьох днів, у день четвертий зважене срібло і золото було передане в дім Господа нашого Мармофі, синові Урії, священику. | And from the river Theras we departed the twelfth day of the first month, and came to Jerusalem by the mighty hand of our Lord, which was with us: and from the beginning of our journey the Lord delivered us from every enemy, and so we came to Jerusalem. |

| І був з ним Єлеазар, син Финеєса; також були з ним Іосавдос, син Ісуса, і Моеф, син Саванна, левити; і здали все за кількістю і вагою; і вся вага їх записана в той же час. | And when we had been there three days, the gold and silver that was weighed was delivered in the house of our Lord on the fourth day unto Marmothi the priest the son of Uria. |

| Тоді ті, що прийшли з полону, принесли жертви Богу Ізраїля, дванадцять волів за всіх ізраїльтян, дев’яносто шість баранів, сімдесят два агнці, дванадцять козлів за спасіння: все це — у жертву Господу, — | And with him was Eleazar the son of Phinees, and with them were Josabad the son of Jesu and Moeth the son of Sabban, Levites: all was delivered them by number and weight. |

| і передали царські повеління царським правителям і начальникам Келе-Сирії і Фінікії, і вони вшанували народ і храм Господа. | And all the weight of them was written up the same hour. |
|

| І коли це було закінчено, приступили до мене начальники і сказали: | Moreover they that were come out of the captivity offered sacrifice unto the Lord God of Israel, even twelve bullocks for all Israel, fourscore and sixteen rams, |
|

|
66
|
| не відокремився народ ізраїльський і начальники і священики і левити від іноплемінних народів землі і від нечистот їх, від народів хананейських, і хеттейських, і ферезейських, і євусейських, і моавитських, і єгипетських, і ідумейських; | threescore and twelve lambs, goats for a peace-offering, twelve; all of them a sacrifice to the Lord. |

| бо вступили у шлюб з дочками їх, як самі, так і сини їхні, і змішалося сíм’я святе з іноплемінними народами землі, і проводирі їхні і вельможі зробилися учасниками цього беззаконня із самого початку. | And they delivered the king's commandments unto the king's stewards, and to the governors of Celosyria and Phenice; and they honoured the people and the temple of God. |

| Як тільки почув я про це, роздер на собі одяг і священне облачення, і рвав волосся на голові і бороді, і сидів заклопотаний і сумний. | Now when these things were done, the rulers came unto me, and said, |

|
| І коли я жалкував про це беззаконня, зібралися до мене всі, хто був натхненний словом Господа Бога Ізраїлевого, і я сидів сумний до вечірньої жертви. | The nation of Israel, the princes, the priests and the Levites, have not put away from them the strange people of the land, nor their pollutions from the Gentiles, to wit, the Canaanites, Hittites, Pheresites, Jebusites, and the Moabites, Egyptians, and Edomites. |

| Тоді, вставши від посту мого, у розідраному одязі й розідраному священному облаченні упав на коліна і, простягнувши руки до Господа, я сказав: | For both they and their sons have married with their daughters, and the holy seed is mixed with the strange people of the land; and from the beginning of this matter the rulers and the great men have been partakers of this iniquity. |

| Господи! я соромлюсь і знічуюся перед лицем Твоїм, | And as soon as I had heard these things, I rent my clothes, and the holy garment, and pulled off the hair from off my head and beard, and sat me down sad and very heavy. |
|

| бо гріхи наші піднялися вище голів наших, і безумство наше піднялося до неба; | So all they that were then moved at the word of the Lord God of Israel assembled unto me, whilst I mourned for the iniquity: but I sat still full of heaviness until the evening sacrifice. |
|

|
| ще від часів батьків наших і до цього дня ми знаходимося у великому гріху; | Then rising up from the fast with my clothes and the holy garment rent, and bowing my knees, and stretching forth my hands unto the Lord, |
|

74
|
| і за гріхи наші і батьків наших ми з братами нашими і царями нашими і священиками нашими були віддані царям іноземним під меч, у полон і на розграбування з осоромленням до цього дня. | I said, O Lord, I am confounded and ashamed before thy face; |
|

|

|
| Але тепер була зроблена нам така велика милість від Тебе, Господи Боже, що Ти залишив наш корінь і ім’я на місці святині Твоєї, | for our sins are multiplied above our heads, and our ignorances have reached up unto heaven. |
|

|
| що відкрив нам світильник у домі Господа, Бога нашого, дав нам споживу під час поневолення нашого! І, коли ми знаходилися в поневоленні, не були залишені Господом, Богом нашим; | For ever since the time of our fathers we have been and are in great sin, even unto this day. |
|

|
| але Він схилив до нас благовоління царів перських, щоб вони дали нам споживу | And for our sins and our fathers' we with our brethren and our kings and our priests were given up unto the kings of the earth, to the sword, and to captivity, and for a prey with shame, unto this day. |
|

|
| і прославили храм Господа нашого, і щоб відбудований був спустошений Сион, і нам дано було утвердження в Юдеї та Єрусалимі. | And now in some measure hath mercy been shewed unto us from thee, O Lord, that there should be left us a root and a name in the place of thy sanctuary; |
|

|
| І нині що́ скажемо ми, Господи, маючи все це? Ми переступили повеління Твої, які Ти дав рукою рабів Твоїх, пророків, говорячи: | and to discover unto us a light in the house of the Lord our God, and to give us food in the time of our servitude. |
|

|
| земля, в яку ви входите, щоб успадкувати її, осквернена сквернами іноплемінних землі, і вони наповнили її нечистотами своїми. | Yea, when we were in bondage, we were not forsaken of our Lord; but he made us favoured before the kings of Persia, so that they gave us food; |
|

|
| І тепер не віддавайте дочок ваших заміж за синів їхніх, і їхніх дочок не беріть за синів ваших, | yea, and honoured the temple of our Lord, and raised up the desolate Sion, so that they have given us a sure abiding in Jewry and Jerusalem. |
|

|
| і не шукайте миру з ними в усі часи, щоб укріпитися вам і споживати блага цієї землі і залишити її у спадщину дітям вашим повіки. | And now, O Lord, what shall we say, having these things? for we have transgressed thy commandments, which thou gavest by the hand of thy servants the prophets, saying, |

| І все, що стається з нами, буває за злі діла наші і за великі гріхи наші. Ти, Господи, полегшив гріхи наші | That the land, which ye enter into to possess as an heritage, is a land polluted with the pollutions of the strangers of the land, and they have filled it with their uncleanness. |
|

|
| і дав нам такий корінь; але ми знову повернулися до порушення закону Твого через змішання з нечистотами народів землі. | Therefore now shall ye not join your daughters unto their sons, neither shall ye take their daughters unto your sons. |
|

|
| Чи не прогнівався Ти на нас так, щоб погубити нас і не залишити ні кореня, ні сімені, ні імені нашого? | Moreover ye shall never seek to have peace with them, that ye may be strong, and eat the good things of the land, and that ye may leave the inheritance of the land unto your children for evermore. |

| Ти істинний, Господи, Боже Ізраїлів! бо ми залишилися коренем до цього дня. | And all that is befallen is done unto us for our wicked works and great sins: for thou, O Lord, didst make our sins light, |
|

| Але ось нині перед Тобою ми в беззаконнях наших; і в них не належало б стояти перед Тобою. | and didst give unto us such a root: but we have turned back again to transgress thy law, and to mingle ourselves with the uncleanness of the nations of the land. |
|

|
| І коли Ездра молився і сповідувався і плакав, простягнувшись на землі перед храмом, зібралося до нього з Єрусалима дуже багато народу: чоловіки, жінки і діти; і був великий плач у народі. | Mightest not thou be angry with us to destroy us, till thou hadst left us neither root, seed, nor name? |

| І, вигукнувши, Ієхонія, син Іоїля, із синів Ізраїля, сказав: Ездро! ми згрішили перед Господом, ми взяли іноплемінних дружин з народів землі; і ось тепер тут весь Ізраїль: | O Lord of Israel, thou art true: for we are left a root this day. |

| нехай буде звершена нами клятва перед Господом у тому, щоб відкинути всіх іноплемінних дружин наших з дітьми їхніми, як розсудилося тобі і всім, які підкорюються закону Господа. | Behold, now are we before thee in our iniquities, for we cannot stand any longer by reason of these things before thee. |

| Вставши, зроби це! бо це твоя справа, і ми з тобою в силі будемо зробити її. | And as Esdras in his prayer made his confession, weeping, and lying flat upon the ground before the temple, there gathered unto him from Jerusalem a very great multitude of men and women and children: for there was great weeping among the multitude. |

| І, вставши, Ездра закляв старших священиків і левитів усього Ізраїля вчинити так, і вони поклялися. | Then Jechonias the son of Jeelus, one of the children of Israel, called out and said, O Esdras, we have sinned against the Lord; we have married strange women of the nations of the land, and now is all Israel aloft. |

| І, вставши, Ездра пішов від притвору храму в житло Іонана, сина Єлиасивового, | Then Esdras rising from the court of the temple went to the chamber of Joanan the son of Eliasib, |
|

|

|
| і перебуваючи там, не їв хліба і не пив води, уболіваючи через великі беззаконня народу. | and remained there, and did eat no meat nor drink water, mourning for the great iniquities of the multitude. |
|

|
3
|
| І було звернення по всій Юдеї та Єрусалиму до всіх, хто повернувся з полону, щоб зібралися в Єрусалимі; | And there was a proclamation in all Jewry and Jerusalem to all them that were of the captivity, that they should be gathered together at Jerusalem: |
|

|
4
|
| а ті, які не з’являться протягом двох або трьох днів, у тих за судом головуючих старійшин буде відібране майно, і самі вони будуть відчужені від громади тих, що були у полоні. | and that whosoever met not there within two or three days, according as the elders that bare rule appointed, their cattle should be seized to the use of the temple, and himself cast out from them that were of the captivity. |

| І за три дні зібралися в Єрусалим усі, що були від коліна Іудиного й Веніамінового, — це було в дев’ятий місяць, у двадцятий день цього місяця. | And in three days were all they of the tribe of Juda and Benjamin gathered together at Jerusalem the twentieth day of the ninth month. |

| І сидів весь народ у дворі храму, тремтячи від зими, що настала. | And all the multitude sat in the broad court of the temple, trembling because of the present foul weather. |
|

|
7
|
| Ездра, вставши, сказав їм: ви зробили беззаконня і живете з іноплемінними дружинами, примножуючи гріхи Ізраїля. | So Esdras arose up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed the law in marrying strange wives, thereby to increase the sins of Israel. |
|

|
8
|
| Отже, воздайте тепер сповідання і славу Господу Богу батьків наших | And now by confessing give glory unto the Lord God of our fathers, |
|
9
|
9
|
| і сотворіть волю Його, і відокремтеся від народів землі і від дружин іноплемінних! | and do his will, and separate yourselves from the heathen of the land, and from the strange women. |
|
10
|
10
|
| І виголосила вся громада, і сказали гучним голосом: як ти сказав, так ми і зробимо. | Then cried the whole multitude, and said with a loud voice, Like as thou hast spoken, so will we do. |
|

|
11
|
| Але громада численна і час зимовий, і ми не в силі стояти під відкритим небом, а справа ця для нас не одного дня і не двох днів, бо дуже багато ми згрішили в цьому: | But forasmuch as the people are many, and it is foul weather, so that we cannot stand without, and this is not a work of a day or two, seeing our sin in these things is spread far: |

| тому нехай будуть поставлені начальники над громадою, і всі ті, які в селищах наших мають іноплемінних дружин, нехай у свій час приходять до них | therefore let the rulers of the multitude stay, and let all them of our habitations that have strange wives come at the time appointed, |
|

|
| зі старійшинами і суддями кожного місця, доки не відвернеться від нас гнів Божий за цю справу. | and with them the rulers and judges of every place, till we turn away the wrath of the Lord from us for this matter. |
|

|
14
|
| І взяли на себе це Іонафан, син Асаїла, і Єзекія, син Феокани, а Месуллам і Левис і Савватей сприяли їм. | Then Jonathan the son of Azael and Ezechias the son of Theocanus accordingly took this matter upon them: and Mosollam and Levis and Sabbatheus helped them. |

| І виконали все це ті, що повернулися з полону. | And they that were of the captivity did according to all these things. |
|

|

|
| І обрав собі Ездра священик головних родоначальників усіх поіменно, і зійшлися вони в новомісяччя десятого місяця для дослідження справи. | And Esdras the priest chose unto him the principal men of their families, all by name: and in the first day of the tenth month they sat together to examine the matter. |
|

|
17
|
| І проведено було до кінця дослідження про чоловіків, які тримали в себе іноплемінних дружин, до новомісяччя першого місяця. | So their cause that held strange wives was brought to an end in the first day of the first month. |
|
18
|
18
|
| І знайшлися серед зібраних священиків такі, що мали іноплемінних дружин: | And of the priests that were come together, and had strange wives, there were found; |
|
19
|
19
|
| із синів Ісуса, сина Іоседекового, і з братів його — Мафилас і Єлеазар і Іорив і Іоадан, | of the sons of Jesus the son of Josedec, and his brethren; Matthelas, and Eleazar, and Joribus, and Joadanus. |
|
20
|
20
|
| які дали руки відкинути дружин своїх і принесли баранів в умилостивлення за гріх свій; | And they gave their hands to put away their wives, and to offer rams to make reconcilement for their errors. |
|
21
|
21
|
| і з синів Еммира — Ананія і Завдей, і Манис і Самей, і Ієреїл і Азарія; | And of the sons of Emmer: Ananias, and Zabdeus, and Manes, and Samæus, and Hiereel, and Azarias. |
|

|
22
|
| і з синів Фесура — Елионаїс, Массія, Ісмаїл і Нафанаїл, і Окодил і Салоя; | And of the sons of Phaisur; Elionais, Massias, Ismael, and Nathanael, and Ocodelus, and Saloas. |
|

|

|
| і з левитів — Іозавад і Семеїс і Колій, він же Калита, і Пафей та Іуда й Іона; | And of the Levites; Jozabad, and Semis, and Coïus, who was called Calitas, and Patheus, and Judas, and Jonas. |
|

|
| зі священноспівців — Єлиасав, Вакхур; | Of the holy singers: Eleasabus, Bacchurus. |
|
25
|
25
|
| з воротарів — Салум і Толван; | Of the porters; Salumus, and Tolbanes. |
|

|
26
|
| із народу ізраїльського, із синів Фороса — Ієрма та Ієзія, і Мелхія і Маїл, і Єлеазар і Асевія і Ванея; | Of them of Israel, of the sons of Phoros; Hiermas, and Jezias, and Melchias, and Maelus, and Eleazar, and Asebias, and Banæas. |

| із синів Ила — Матфанія, Захарія та Ієзриїл, і Іоавдій і Ієремоф і Аїдія; | Of the sons of Ela; Matthanias, Zacharias, and Jezrielus, and Joabdius, and Hieremoth, and Aïdias. |
|

|
| із синів Замофа — Елиада, Елеасим, Офонія, Іаримоф і Сават і Зералія; | And of the sons of Zamoth; Eliadas, Eliasimus, Othonias, Jarimoth, and Sabatus, and Zeralias. |
|

| і з синів Виваія — Іоан і Ананія й Іозавад і Амафія; | Of the sons of Bebai; Joannes, and Ananias, and Josabad, and Amatheis. |
|

|
| із синів Мані — Олам, Мамух, Ієдей, Іасув й Іасаїл та Ієремоф; | Of the sons of Mani; Olamus, Mamuchus, Jedeus, Jasubus, Jasael, and Hieremoth. |

| і з синів Адди — Нааф і Моосія, Лаккун і Наїд, Матфанія і Сесфил, і Валнуй і Манассія; | And of the sons of Addi; Naathus, and Moosias, Lacunus, and Naidus, Matthanias, and Sesthel, Balnuus, and Manasseas. |

| і з синів Анана — Елиона й Асаія, і Мелхія і Саввей, і Симон Хосамей; | And of the sons of Annas; Elionas, and Asaias, and Melchias, and Sabbeus, and Simon Chosameus. |

| і з синів Асома — Алтаней і Маттафія, і Саванней і Елифалат, і Манассія і Семей; | And of the sons of Asom; Altaneus, and Mattathias, and Sabanneus, Eliphalat, and Manasses, and Semei. |

| і з синів Ваанія — Єремія, Момдій, Ісмаїр, Іуїл, Мафдай і Педія й Анос, Равасіон і Енасив і Мамнитанем, Елиасис, Ваннус, Елиалі, Сомей, Селемія, Нафанія; і з синів Езора — Сесис, Езрил, Азаїл, Самат, Замрі, Йосиф; | And of the sons of Baani: Jeremias, Momdis, Ismaerus, Juel, Mabdai, and Pedias, and Anos, Rabasion, and Enasibus, and Mamnitanaimus, Eliasis, Bannus, Eliali, Samis, Selemias, Nathanias: and of the sons of Ezora; Sesis, Esril, Azaelus, Samatus, Zambri, Josephus. |

| і з синів Ефма — Мазитія, Завадей, Ідей, Іуїл, Ванея. | And of the sons of Ethma; Mazitias, Zabadaias, Edaïs, Juel, Banaias. |

| Всі ці жили з дружинами іноплемінними і відпустили їх з дітьми. | All these had taken strange wives, and they put them away with their children. |
|

|
| І оселилися в новомісяччя сьомого місяця священики і левити й ізраїльтяни, які були у Єрусалимі й в області його, і сини Ізраїля в місцях своїх. | And the priests and Levites, and they that were of Israel, dwelt in Jerusalem, and in the country, in the first day of the seventh month: so the children of Israel were in their habitations. |

| І зібрався одностайно увесь народ на просторі перед східними воротами храму, | And the whole multitude came together with one accord into the broad place of the holy porch toward the east: |
|

|
| і сказали Ездрі, священику і читцю, щоб він приніс закон Мойсея, даний від Господа Бога Ізраїлевого. | and they spake unto Esdras the priest and reader, that he would bring the law of Moses, that was given of the Lord God of Israel. |
|

|
| І виніс первосвященик Ездра закон до всього народу — від чоловіка до жінки, і до усіх священиків, щоб слухали закон, у новомісяччя сьомого місяця, | So Esdras the chief priest brought the law to the whole multitude from man to woman, and to all the priests, to hear the law in the first day of the seventh month. |

| і читав їм його на просторі перед воротами храму з ранку до полудня перед чоловіками і жінками, і весь народ слухав закон. | And he read in the broad court before the holy porch from morning unto midday, before both men and women; and all the multitude gave heed unto the law. |
|

| І став Ездра, священик і читець, на приготованому дерев’яному узвишші; | And Esdras the priest and reader of the law stood up upon a pulpit of wood which was made for that purpose. |
|

|
| і перед ним стояли з правого боку Маттафія, Саммус, Ананія, Азарія, Урія, Єзекія і Ваалсам, | And there stood up by him Mattathias, Sammus, Ananias, Azarias, Urias, Ezecias, Baalsamus, upon the right hand: |
|

44
|
| а з лівого — Фалдей і Мисаїл, Мелхія, Аофасув, Наварія, Захарія. | and upon his left hand Phaldaius, and Misael, Melchias, Lothasubus, Nabarias, Zacharias. |
|

|
| І, взявши книгу закону перед народом, Ездра зі славою сів перед усіма; | Then took Esdras the book of the law before the multitude: for he sat honourably in the first place in the sight of them all. |
|

|
46
|
| і коли він пояснював закон, усі стояли прямо; і благословив Ездра Господа Бога Всевишнього, Бога Саваофа, Вседержителя. | And when he opened the law, they stood all straight up. So Esdras blessed the Lord God most High, the God of hosts, Almighty. |
|

|

|
| І весь народ виголосив: амінь! і, піднявши догори руки і припавши до землі, поклонилися Господу. | And all the people answered, Amen; and lifting up their hands they fell to the ground, and worshipped the Lord. |
|

|
48
|
| Також Ісус і Анниуф, і Саравія й Іадин та Іакув, Саватія, Автея, Меанна і Калита, Азарія й Іозавд, і Ананія і Фалія, левити, повчали закону Господа і читали перед народом закон Господа, пояснюючи при тім читання. | Also Jesus, Anniuth, Sarabias, Adinus, Jacubus, Sabateas, Auteas, Maiannas, and Calitas, Azarias, and Joazabdus, and Ananias, Phalias, the Levites, taught the law of the Lord, and read the law of the Lord to the multitude, making them withal to understand it. |

| І сказав Атфарат Ездрі, первосвященику і читцю, і левитам, що повчали народ, усім: | Then spake Attharates unto Esdras the chief priest and reader, and to the Levites that taught the multitude, even to all, saying, |
|

| день цей святий Господу, й усі плакали під час слухання закону; | This day is holy unto the Lord; (for they all wept when they heard the law:) |
|

|
51
|
| йдіть і їжте жирне, і пийте солодке, і пошліть милостині незаможним, | go then, and eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send part to them that have nothing: |
|
52
|
52
|
| бо день цей святий Господу, і тому не сумуйте, бо Господь прославить вас. | for this day is holy unto the Lord: and be not sorrowful; for the Lord will bring you to honour. |
|

|
53
|
| Також і левити тлумачили всьому народу і говорили: день цей святий, не сумуйте. | So the Levites published all things to the people, saying, This day is holy to the Lord; be not sorrowful. |
|

|
54
|
| І пішли всі їсти і пити і веселитися, і подавати милостині незаможним, і веселилися багато, | Then went they their way, every one to eat and drink and make merry, and to give part to them that had nothing, and to make great cheer; |
|
55
|
55
|
| тому що вони перейняті були словами, якими повчали зібрання. | because they understood the words wherein they were instructed, and for the which they had been assembled. |
