| Як самотньо сидить місто, колись багатолюдне! воно стало, як удова; великий між народами, князь над областями зробився данником. | Aleph. How does the city that was filled with people sit solitary! she is become as a widow: she that was magnified among the nations, and princess among the provinces, has become tributary. |

|
| Гірко плаче він уночі, і сльози його на щоках його. Немає у нього утішника з усіх, що любили його; усі друзі його зрадили його, зробилися ворогами його. | Beth. She weeps sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; and there is none of all her lovers to comfort her: all that were her friends have dealt deceitfully with her, they are become her enemies. |

| Іуда переселився з причини біди і тяжкого рабства, оселився серед язичників, і не знайшов спокою; усі, хто переслідував його, наздогнали його у тісних місцях. | Gimel. Judea is gone into captivity by reason of her affliction, and by reason of the abundance of her servitude: she dwells among the nations, she has not found rest: all her pursuers have overtaken her between her oppressors. |

| Путі Сиону ремствують, тому що немає паломників на свято; усі ворота його запустіли; священики його зітхають, дівчата його сумні, гірко і йому самому. | Daleth. The ways of Sion mourn, because there are none that come to the feast: all her gates are ruined: her priests groan, her virgins are led captive, and she is in bitterness in herself. |

| Вороги його стали на чолі, вороги його благоденствують, тому що Господь наслав на нього горе за безліч беззаконь його; діти його пішли у полон попереду ворога. | He. Her oppressors are become the head, and her enemies have prospered; for the Lord has afflicted her because of the multitude of her sins: her young children are gone into captivity before the face of the oppressor. |

| І відійшла від дочки Сиону вся її пишність; князі її — як олені, що не знаходять пасовища; знесилені вони пішли попереду погонича. | Vau. And all her beauty has been taken away from the daughter of Sion: her princes were as rams finding no pasture, and are gone away in weakness before the face of the pursuer. |

| Згадав Єрусалим, у дні бідування свого і страждань своїх, про всі коштовності свої, які були у нього у минулі дні, тоді як народ його впав від руки ворога, і ніхто не допомагає йому; вороги дивляться на нього і глузують з його субот. | Zain. Jerusalem remembered the days of her affliction, and her rejection; she thought on all her desirable things which were from the days of old, when her people fell into the hands of the oppressor, and there was none to help her: when her enemies saw it they laughed at her habitation. |

| Тяжко згрішив Єрусалим, за те і зробився огидним; усі, хто прославляв його, дивляться на нього з презирством, тому що побачили наготу його; і сам він зітхає і відвертається назад. | Heth. Jerusalem has sinned a great sin; therefore has she come into tribulation, all that used to honour her have afflicted her, for they have seen her shame: yea, she herself groaned, and turned backward. |

| На подолі у нього була нечистота, але він не думав про майбутнє своє, і тому надзвичайно принизився, і немає в нього утішителя. «Зглянься, Господи, на біду мою, бо ворог звеличився!» | Teth. Her uncleanness is before her feet; she remembered not her last end; she has lowered her boasting tone, there is none to comfort her. Behold, O Lord, my affliction: for the enemy has magnified himself. |

| Ворог простяг руку свою на все, найдорогоцінніше для нього; він бачить, як язичники входять у святилище його, про яке Ти заповів, щоб вони не вступали у зібрання Твоє. | Jod. The oppressor has stretched out his hand on all her desirable things: for she has seen the Gentiles entering into her sanctuary, concerning whom thou didst command that they should not enter into thy congregation. |

| Весь народ його зітхає, шукаючи хліба, віддає коштовності свої за їжу, щоб підкріпити душу. «Зглянься, Господи, і подивися, як я принижений!» | Chaph. All her people groan, seeking bread: they have given their desirable things for meat, to restore their soul: behold, Lord, and look; for she is become dishonoured. |

| Нехай не буде цього з вами, усі, хто проходить цим шляхом! погляньте і подивіться, чи є хвороба, як моя хвороба, яка осягла мене, яку наслав на мене Господь у день великого гніву Свого? | Lamed. All ye that pass by the way, turn, and see if there is sorrow like to my sorrow, which has happened to me. The Lord who spoke by me has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. |

| З висоти послав Він вогонь у кістки мої, і він оволодів ними; розкинув сіті для ніг моїх, перекинув мене, зробив мене бідним і сумуючим кожного дня. | Mem. He has sent fire from his lofty habitation, he has brought it into my bones: he has spread a net for my feet, he has turned me back: he has made me desolate and mourning all the day. |

| Ярмо беззаконь моїх зв’язано у руці Його; вони сплетені і піднялися на шию мою; Він послабив сили мої. Господь віддав мене до рук, з яких не можу піднятися. | Nun. He has watched over my sins, they are twined about my hands, they have come up on my neck: my strength has failed; for the Lord has laid pains on my hands, I shall not be able to stand. |

| Усіх сильних моїх Господь повалив серед мене, скликав проти мене зібрання, щоб знищити юнаків моїх; як у точилі, потоптав Господь діву, дочку Іуди. | Samech. The Lord has cut off all my strong men from the midst of me: he has summoned against me a time for crushing my choice men: the Lord has trodden a wine-press for the virgin daughter of Juda: for these things I weep. |

| Про це плачу я; око моє, око моє виливає води, бо далеко від мене утішитель, який оживив би душу мою; діти мої розорені, тому що ворог переміг. | Ain. Mine eye has poured out water, because he that should comfort me, that should restore my soul, has been removed far from me: my sons have been destroyed, because the enemy has prevailed. |

| Сион простягає руки свої, але утішителя нема йому. Господь дав повеління про Якова ворогам його оточити його; Єрусалим зробився мерзотою серед них. | Phe. Sion has spread out her hand, and there is none to comfort her: the Lord has commanded concerning Jacob, his oppressors are round about him: Jerusalem has become among them as a removed woman. |

| Праведний Господь, бо я непокірливим був слову Його. Послухайте, усі народи, і подивіться на хворість мою: діви мої та юнаки мої пішли у полон. | Tsade. The Lord is righteous; for I have provoked his mouth: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my grief: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity. |

| Кличу друзів моїх, але вони обманули мене; священики мої і старці мої гинуть у місті, шукаючи їжі собі, щоб підкріпити душу свою. | Koph. I called my lovers, but they deceived me: my priests and my elders failed in the city; for they sought meat that they might restore their souls, and found it not. |

| Зглянься, Господи, бо мені прикро, хвилюються у мені нутрощі, серце моє перевернулося у мені за те, що я вперто противився Тобі; ззовні зробив бездітним мене меч, а доми — як смерть. | Rhechs. Behold, O Lord; for I am afflicted: my belly is troubled, and my heart is turned within me; for I have been grievously rebellious: abroad the sword has bereaved me, even as death at home. |

| Почули, що я стогну, а утішителя у мене немає; почули всі вороги мої про біду мою і зраділи, що Ти зробив це: о, якби Ти повелів настати дню, прореченому Тобою, і вони стали б подібними до мене! | Chsen. Hear, I pray you, for I groan: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of mine afflictions, and rejoice because thou hast done it: thou hast brought on the day, thou hast called the time: they are become like to me. |

| Нехай постане перед лице Твоє вся злоба їх; і вчини з ними так само, як Ти вчинив зі мною за всі гріхи мої, бо тяжкі стогони мої, і серце моє знемагає. | Thau. Let all their wickedness come before thy face; and strip them, as they have made a gleaning for all my sins: for my groans are many, and my heart is grieved. |

| Як потьмарив Господь у гніві Своєму дочку Сиону! з небес повалив на землю красу Ізраїля і не згадав про підніжжя ніг Своїх у день гніву Свого. | Aleph. How has the Lord darkened in his wrath the daughter of Sion! he has cast down the glory of Israel from heaven to earth, and has not remembered his footstool. |

| Погубив Господь усі оселі Якова, не пощадив, зруйнував у люті Своїй укріплення дочки Іудиної, повалив на землю, відкинув царство і князів його, як нечистих: | Beth. In the day of his wrath the Lord has overwhelmed her as in the sea, and not spared: he has brought down in his fury all the beautiful things of Jacob; he has brought down to the ground the strong-holds of the daughter of Juda: he has profaned her king and her princes. |

| у запалі гніву зломив усі роги Ізраїлеві, відвів правицю Свою від ворога і запалав у Якові, як палючий вогонь, що пожирає усе навколо; | Gimel. He has broken in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he has turned back his right hand from the face of the enemy, and has kindled a flame in Jacob as fire, and it has devoured all things round about. |

| натягнув лук Свій, як неприятель, спрямував правицю Свою, як ворог, і убив усе, жадане для очей; на скинію дочки Сиону вилив лють Свою, як вогонь. | Daleth. He has bent his bow as an opposing enemy: he has strengthened his right hand as an adversary, and has destroyed all the desirable things of my eyes in the tabernacle of the daughter of Sion: he has poured forth his anger as fire. |

| Господь став як супротивник, знищив Ізраїля, зруйнував усі палаци його, зруйнував укріплення його і розповсюдив у дочки Іудиної нарікання і плач. | He. The Lord is become as an enemy: he has overwhelmed Israel as in the sea, he has overwhelmed her palaces: he has destroyed his strong-holds, and has multiplied the afflicted and humbled ones to the daughter of Juda. |

| І зняв огорожу Свою, як у саду; розорив Своє місце зібрань, змусив Господь забути свята і суботи на Сионі; і в обуренні гніву Свого відкинув царя і священика. | Vau. And he has scattered his tabernacle as a vine, he has marred his feast: the Lord has forgotten the feast and the sabbath which he appointed in Sion, and in the fury of his wrath has vexed the king, and priest, and prince. |

| Відкинув Господь жертовник Свій, відвернув серце Своє від святилища Свого, віддав до рук ворогів стіни палаців його; у домі Господньому вони шуміли, як у святковий день. | Zain. The Lord has rejected his altar, he has cast off his sanctuary, he has broken by the hand of the enemy the wall of her palaces; they have uttered their voice in the house of the Lord as on a feast day. |

| Господь визначив зруйнувати стіну дочки Сиону, простягнув вірьовку, не відхилив руки Своєї від руйнування; знищив зовнішні укріплення, і стіни разом зруйновані. | Heth. And he has turned to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he has stretched out the measuring line, he has not turned back his hand from afflicting her: therefore the bulwark mourned, and the wall was weakened with it. |

| Ворота її вросли у землю; Він зруйнував і розтрощив засуви їх; цар її і князі її — серед язичників; не стало закону, і пророки її не сподобляються видінь від Господа. | Teth. Her gates are sunk into the ground: he has destroyed and broken to pieces her bars, and her king and her prince among the Gentiles: there is no law, nay, her prophets have seen no vision from the Lord. |

| Сидять на землі безмовно старці дочки Сионової, посипали попелом свої голови, оперезались веретищем; опустили до землі голови свої діви єрусалимські. | Jod. The elders of the daughter of Sion have sat upon the ground, they have kept silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloths: they have brought down to the ground the chief virgins in Jerusalem. |

| Виснажилися від сліз очі мої, хвилюються у мені нутрощі мої, виливається на землю печінка моя від загибелі дочки народу мого, коли діти і немовлята умирають від голоду посеред міських вулиць. | Chaph. Mine eyes have failed with tears, my heart is troubled, my glory is cast down to the ground, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; while the infant and suckling swoon in the streets of the city. |

| Матерям своїм говорять вони: «де хліб і вино?», помираючи, подібно до поранених, на вулицях міських, виливаючи душі свої у лоно матерів своїх. | Lamed. They said to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? while they fainted like wounded men in the streets of the city, while their souls were poured out into their mother's bosom. |

| Що мені сказати тобі, з чим порівняти тебе, дочко Єрусалима? до чого уподібнити тебе, щоб утішити тебе, діво, дочко Сиону? бо рана твоя велика, як море; хто може зцілити тебе? | Mem. What shall I testify to thee, or what shall I compare to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? who shall save and comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Sion? for the cup of thy destruction is enlarged: who shall heal thee? |

| Пророки твої віщували тобі пусте і неправдиве і не розкривали твого беззаконня, щоб відвернути твій полон, і сповіщали тобі одкровення неправдиві, які і привели тебе до вигнання. | Nun. Thy prophets have seen for thee vanities and folly: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn back thy captivity; but they have seen for thee vain burdens, and worthless visions. |

| Руками сплескують про тебе всі, хто проходить шляхом, свистять і хитають головою своєю про дочку Єрусалима, говорячи: «чи це місто, яке називали досконалістю краси, радістю всієї землі?» | Samech. All that go by the way have clapped their hands at thee; they have hissed and shaken their head at the daughter of Jerusalem. Is this the city, they say, the crown of joy of all the earth? |

| Розкрили на тебе пастку свою всі вороги твої, свистять і скрегочуть зубами, говорять: «поглинули ми його, тільки цього дня і чекали ми, дочекалися, побачили!» | Ain. All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they have hissed and gnashed their teeth, and said, We have swallowed her up: moreover this is the day which we looked for; we have found it, we have seen it. |

| Звершив Господь, що визначив, виконав слово Своє, сказане у давні дні, розорив без пощади і дав ворогові порадіти над тобою, підніс ріг ворогів твоїх. | Phe. The Lord has done that which he purposed; he has accomplished his word, even the things which he commanded from the ancient days: he has thrown down, and has not spared: and he has caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, he has exalted the horn of him that afflicted thee. |

|
| Серце їх волає до Господа: стіно дочки Сиону! лий струмком сльози день і ніч, не давай собі спокою, не спускай зіниць очей твоїх. | Tsade. Their heart cried to the Lord, Ye walls of Sion, pour down tears like torrents day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eyes cease. |

| Вставай, волай уночі, на початку кожної сторо́жі; виливай, як воду, серце твоє перед лицем Господа; простягай до Нього руки твої за душу дітей твоїх, які гинуть від голоду на перехрестях усіх вулиць. | Koph. Arise, rejoice in the night at the beginning of thy watch: pour out thy heart as water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands to him for the life of thine infants, who faint for hunger at the top of all the streets. |

| «Споглянь, Господи, і подивися: кому Ти зробив так, щоб жінки їли плід свій, немовлят, вигодуваних ними? щоб убивали у святилищі Господньому священика і пророка? | Rhechs. Behold, O Lord, and see for whom thou hast gathered thus. Shall the women eat the fruit of their womb? the cook has made a gathering: shall the infants sucking at the breasts be slain? wilt thou slay the priest and prophet in the sanctuary of the Lord? |

| Діти і старці лежать на землі по вулицях; діви мої та юнаки мої впали від меча; Ти убивав їх у день гніву Твого, знищував без милосердя. | Chsen. The child and old man have lain down in the street: my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity: thou hast slain them with the sword and with famine; in the day of thy wrath thou hast mangled them, thou hast not spared. |

| Ти скликав звідусіль, як на свято, жахи мої, і в день гніву Господнього ніхто не врятувався, ніхто не уцілів; тих, які були мною вигодувані й вирощені, ворог мій знищив». | Thau. He has called my sojourners round about to a solemn day, and there was not in the day of the wrath of the Lord any one that escaped or was left; whereas I have strengthened and multiplied all mine enemies. |

Chapter 3

| Я чоловік, який зазнав горя від жезла гніву Його. | Aleph. I am the man that sees poverty, through the rod of his wrath upon me. |
|

|
2
|
| Він повів мене і ввів у темряву, а не у світло. | He has taken me, and led me away into darkness, and not into light. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Так, Він повернув на мене і весь день повертає руку Свою; | Nay, against me has he turned his hand all the day. |
|
4
|
4
|
| виснажив плоть мою і шкіру мою, розтрощив кістки мої; | He has made old my flesh and my skin; he has broken my bones. |
|

|
5
|
| огородив мене і обклав гіркотою і тяготою; | Beth. He has built against me, and compassed my head, and brought travail upon me. |
|

|
6
|
| посадив мене у темне місце, як давно померлих; | He has set me in dark places, as them that have long been dead. |
|

|
7
|
| оточив мене стіною, щоб я не вийшов, обтяжив кайдани мої, | He has builded against me, and I cannot come forth: he has made my brazen chain heavy. |
|

|
| і коли я волав і взивав, затримував молитву мою; | Gimel. Yea, though I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer. |
|

|
| камінням перегородив дороги мої, виправив стежки мої. | Daleth. He has built up my ways, he has hedged my paths; |

|
| Він став для мене, ніби ведмідь у засідці, ніби лев у потаємному місці; | he has troubled me, as a she-bear lying in wait: he is to me as a lion in secret places. |

|
| викривив путі мої і розтерзав мене, перетворив мене на ніщо; | He pursued me after I departed, and brought me to a stand: he has utterly ruined me. |
|

|
| натягнув лук Свій і поставив мене ніби ціллю для стріл; | He. He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. |
|

|
| послав у нирки мої стріли із сагайдака Свого. | He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins. |
|

|
14
|
| Я став посміховищем для всього народу мого, вседенною піснею їх. | I became a laughing-stock to all my people; and their song all the day. |
|

|
15
|
| Він переситив мене гіркотою, напоїв мене полином. | Vau. He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with gall. |
|
16
|
16
|
| Розтрощив камінням зуби мої, покрив мене попелом. | And he has dashed out my teeth with gravel, he has fed me with ashes. |
|

|
17
|
| І відійшов мир від душі моєї; я забув про благоденство, | He has also removed my soul from peace: I forgot prosperity. |
|
18
|
18
|
| і сказав я: загинула сила моя і надія моя на Господа. | Therefore my success has perished, and my hope from the Lord. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Помисли про моє страждання і біду мою, про полин і жовч. | Zain. I remembered by reason of my poverty, and because of persecution my bitterness and gall shall be remembered; |

|
20
|
| Твердо пам’ятає це душа моя і падає у мені. | and my soul shall meditate with me. |
|
21
|

|
| Ось що я відповідаю серцю моєму і тому уповаю: | This will I lay up in my heart, therefore will I endure. |
|

|
|
| з милости Господа ми не зникли, бо милосердя Його не виснажилося. | |
|
23
|
|
| Воно оновлюється кожного ранку; велика вірність Твоя! | |
|
24
|
|
| Господь частина моя, — говорить душа моя, — отже, буду надіятися на Нього. | |
|
25
|
25
|
| Благий Господь до тих, хто надіється на Нього, до душі, яка шукає Його. | Teth. The Lord is good to them that wait for him: the soul which shall seek him |
|
26
|
26
|
| Благо тому, хто терпляче очікує спасіння від Господа. | is good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation of the Lord. |
|

|
27
|
| Благо людині, коли вона несе тягар у юності своїй; | Teth. It is good for a man when he bears a yoke in his youth. |
|
28
|
28
|
| сидить усамітнено і мовчить, бо Він наклав його на неї; | He will sit alone, and be silent, because he has borne it upon him. |
|
29
|
|
| вважає вуста свої за порох, думаючи: «можливо, є ще надія»; | |
|
30
|
30
|
| підставляє щоку свою тому, хто б’є його, пересичується ганьбою, | Jod. He will give his cheek to him that smites him: he will be filled full with reproaches. |
|

|
31
|
| бо не навік залишає Господь. | For the Lord will not reject for ever. |
|
32
|
32
|
| Але послав горе, і помилує з великої благости Своєї. | Chaph. For he that has brought down will pity, and that according to the abundance of his mercy. |
|
33
|
33
|
| Бо Він не з волі серця Свого карає і засмучує синів людських. | He has not answered in anger from his heart, though he has brought low the children of a man. |
|
34
|
34
|
| Але, коли топчуть ногами своїми всіх в’язнів землі, | Lamed. To bring down under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, |
|
35
|
35
|
| коли неправедно судять людину перед лицем Всевишнього, | to turn aside the judgment of a man before the face of the Most High, |
|
36
|
36
|
| коли пригноблюють людину в ділі її: хіба не бачить Господь? | to condemn a man unjustly in his judgment, the Lord has not given commandment. |
|
37
|
37
|
| Хто це говорить: «і те буває, чому Господь не повелів бути»? | Who has thus spoken, and it has come to pass? the Lord has not commanded it. |
|
38
|
38
|
| Чи не від уст Всевишнього приходить біда і благополуччя? | Out of the mouth of the Most High there shall not come forth evil and good. |
|

|
39
|
| Навіщо ремствує людина, яка живе? кожен ремствуй на гріхи свої. | Mem. Why should a living man complain, a man concerning his sin? |
|
40
|
40
|
| Випробуємо і дослідимо путі свої, і звернімося до Господа. | Nun. Our way has been searched out and examined, and we will turn to the Lord. |
|

|
41
|
| Піднесімо серце наше і руки до Бога, сущого на небесах: | Let us lift up our hearts with our hands to the lofty One in heaven. |
|

|
42
|
| ми відпали й були вперті; Ти не пощадив. | We have sinned, we have transgressed; and thou hast not pardoned. |
|
43
|
43
|
| Ти покрив Себе гнівом і переслідував нас, умертвляв, не щадив; | Samech. Thou hast visited us in wrath, and driven us away: thou hast slain, thou hast not pitied. |
|
44
|
44
|
| Ти закрив Себе хмарою, щоб не доходила молитва наша; | Thou hast veiled thyself with a cloud because of prayer, that I might be blind, |

|
| сміттям і мерзотою Ти зробив нас серед народів. | and be cast off. Ain. Thou hast set us alone in the midst of the nations. |

|
| Розкрили на нас пастку свою всі вороги наші. | All our enemies have opened their mouth against us. |
|
47
|
47
|
| Жах і яма, спустошення і руйнування — доля наша. | Fear and wrath are come upon us, suspense and destruction. |
|
48
|
48
|
| Потоки вод виливає око моє через загибель дочки народу мого. | Mine eye shall pour down torrents of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. |
|

|
| Око моє виливається і не перестає, бо немає полегшення, | Phe. Mine eye is drowned with tears, and I will not be silent, so that there shall be no rest, |
|

|
50
|
| доки не зглянеться і не побачить Господь з небес. | until the Lord look down, and behold from heaven. |
|
51
|
51
|
| Око моє засмучує душу мою заради всіх дочок мого міста. | Mine eye shall prey upon my soul, because of all the daughters of the city. |
|
52
|
52
|
| Всіляко намагалися вловити мене, як пташку, вороги мої, без усякої причини; | Tsade. The fowlers chased me as a sparrow, all mine enemies destroyed my life in a pit without cause, |
|

|
| скинули життя моє в яму і закидали мене камінням. | and laid a stone upon me. |
|

|

| Сини Сиону дорогоцінні, рівноцінні найчистішому золоту, як вони зрівняні з глиняним посудом, виробом рук гончаря! | Beth. The precious sons of Zion, who were equalled in value with gold, how are they counted as earthen vessels, the works of the hands of the potter! |

| Покарання нечестя дочки народу мого перевищує страту за гріхи Содома: той загинув миттєво, і руки людські не торкалися його. | Vau. And the iniquity of the daughter of my people has been increased beyond the iniquities of Sodoma, the city that was overthrown very suddenly, and none laboured against her with their hands. |

| Князі її були у ній чистіші за сніг, біліші за молоко; вони були тілом кращі за корал, вигляд їх був, як сапфір; | Zain. Her Nazarites were made purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were purified as with fire, their polishing was superior to sapphire stone. |

| а тепер темніші за все чорне лиця їхні; не впізнаю́ть їх на вулицях; шкіра їхня прилипла до кісток їхніх, стала суха, як дерево. | Heth. Their countenance is become blacker than smoke; they are not known in the streets: their skin has cleaved to their bones; they are withered, they are become as a stick. |

| Умертвлені мечем щасливіші за померлих від голоду, тому що ці тануть, уражені від нестачі плодів польових. | Teth. The slain with the sword were better than they that were slain with hunger: they have departed, pierced through from want of the fruits of the field. |

| Руки м’якосердих жінок варили дітей своїх, щоб вони були для них їжею у час загибелі дочки народу мого. | Jod. The hands of tender-hearted women have sodden their own children: they became meat for them in the destruction of the daughter of my people. |

| Звершив Господь гнів Свій, вилив лють гніву Свого і запалив на Сионі вогонь, який пожер основи його. | Chaph. The Lord has accomplished his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger, and has kindled a fire in Sion, and it has devoured her foundations. |

| Не вірили царі землі і всі, що живуть у вселенній, щоб ворог і супротивник увійшов у врата Єрусалима. | Lamed. The kings of the earth, even all that dwell in the world, believed not that an enemy and oppressor would enter through the gates of Jerusalem. |

| Усе це — за гріхи лжепророків його, за беззаконня священиків його, які серед нього проливали кров праведників; | Mem. For the sins of her prophets, and iniquities of her priests, who shed righteous blood in the midst of her, |

| бродили, як сліпі, вулицями, осквернилися кров’ю, так що неможливо було доторкнутися до одягу їх. | Nun. her watchmen staggered in the streets, they were defiled with blood in their weakness, they touched their raiment with it. |

| «Цурайтеся! нечистий!» кричали їм; «цурайтеся, цурайтеся, не доторкайтеся»; і вони йшли засмучені; а між народом говорили: «їх більше не буде! | Samech. | Згадай, Господи, що над нами звершилося; споглянь і подивися на наругу нашу. | Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us: behold, and look on our reproach. |

| Спадщина наша перейшла до чужих, доми наші — до іноплемінників; | Our inheritance has been turned away to aliens, our houses to strangers: |

|
| ми зробилися сиротами, без батька; матері наші — як удови. | we are become orphans, we have no father, our mothers are as widows. |
|

|

|
| Воду свою п’ємо за срібло, дрова наші дістаються нам за гроші. | We have drunk our water for money; our wood is sold to us for a burden on our neck: |

|
| Нас гонять у шию, ми працюємо, і не маємо відпочинку. | we have been persecuted, we have laboured, we have had no rest. |
|

| Простягаємо руку до єгиптян, до ассиріян, щоб насититися хлібом. | Egypt gave the hand to us, Assur to their own satisfaction. |
|

|
| Батьки наші грішили: їх уже немає, а ми несемо покарання за беззаконня їхні. | Our fathers sinned, and are not: we have borne their iniquities. |
|
8
|
8
|
| Раби господарюють над нами, і нема кому визволити від рук їхніх. | Servants have ruled over us: there is none to ransom us out of their hand. |
|

|

|
| З небезпекою для життя від меча, у пустелі дістаємо хліб собі. | We shall bring in our bread with danger of our lives, because of the sword of the wilderness. |
|

|

|
| Шкіра наша почорніла, як піч, від пекучого голоду. | Our skin is blackened like an oven; they are convulsed, because of the storms of famine. |
|
11
|
11
|
| Дружин безчестять на Сионі, дівиць — у містах юдейських. | They humbled the women in Sion, the virgins in the cities of Juda. |
|
12
|
12
|
| Князі повішені руками їхніми, лиця старців не поважаються. | Princes were hanged up by their hands: the elders were not honoured. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Юнаків беруть до жорнів, і діти падають під ношами дров. | The chosen men lifted up the voice in weeping, and the youths fainted under the wood. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Старці вже не сидять біля воріт; юнаки не співають. | And the elders ceased from the gate, the chosen men ceased from their music. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Припинилася радість серця нашого; хороводи наші перетворилися на нарікання. | The joy of our heart has ceased; our dance is turned into mourning. |
|
16
|
16
|
| Упав вінець з голови нашої; горе нам, що ми згрішили! | The crown has fallen from our head: yea, woe to us! for we have sinned. |
|

| Від цього й ниє серце наше; від цього затьмарилися очі наші. | For this has grief come; our heart is sorrowful: for this our eyes are darkened. |

| Від того, що запустіла гора Сион, лисиці ходять по ній. | Over the mountain of Sion, because it is made desolate, foxes have walked therein. |

| Ти, Господи, перебуваєш повіки; престіл Твій — у рід і рід. | But thou, O Lord, shalt dwell for ever; thy throne shall endure to generation and generation. |
|

| Для чого зовсім забуваєш нас, залишаєш нас на тривалий час? | Wherefore wilt thou utterly forget us, and abandon us a long time? |

| Наверни нас до Тебе, Господи, і ми навернемося; онови дні наші, як у давнину. | Turn us, O Lord, to thee, and we shall be turned; and renew our days as before. |

| Невже Ти зовсім відкинув нас, прогнівався на нас безмірно? | For thou hast indeed rejected us; thou hast been very wroth against us. |
