|
| Притчі Соломона, сина Давидового, царя Ізраїльського, | The Proverbs of Solomon son of David, who reigned in Israel; |
|

|
2
|
| щоб пізнати мудрість і наставляння, зрозуміти слова розуму; | to know wisdom and instruction, and to perceive words of understanding; |
|
3
|
3
|
| засвоїти правила розсудливости, правосуддя, суду і правоти; | to receive also hard sayings, and to understand true justice, and how to direct judgment; |
|
4
|
4
|
| простим дати розважливість, юнаку — знання і розсудливість; | that he might give subtlety to the simple, and to the young man discernment and understanding. |
|

|
5
|
| послухає мудрий — і примножить пізнання, і розумний знайде мудрі поради; | For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and the man of understanding will gain direction; |
|

|
6
|
| щоб розуміти притчу і хитромудру мову, слова мудреців і загадки їхні. | and will understand a parable, and a dark speech; the sayings of the wise also, and riddles. |
|

|
| Початок мудрости — страх Господній; [добре розуміння в усіх, кого воно водить; а благоговіння до Бога — початок розуміння;] нерозумні тільки нехтують мудрість і наставляння. | The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; and there is good understanding to all that practise it: and piety toward God is the beginning of discernment; but the ungodly will set at nought wisdom and instruction. |

| Слухай, сину мій, повчання батька твого і не відкидай заповіту матері твоєї, | Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and reject not the rules of thy mother. |
|

|

|
| тому що це — прекрасний вінок для голови твоєї і прикраса для шиї твоєї. | For thou shalt receive for thine head a crown of graces, and a chain of gold round thy neck. |
|

|
10
|
| Сину мій! якщо будуть схиляти тебе грішники, не погоджуйся; | My son, let not ungodly men lead thee astray, neither consent thou to them. |
|

|
11
|
| якщо будуть говорити: «йди з нами, зробимо засідку для убивства, підстережемо непорочного без вини, | If they should exhort thee, saying, Come with us, partake in blood, and let us unjustly hide the just man in the earth: |
|
12
|
12
|
| живих проковтнемо їх, як пекло, і — цілих, як тих, що сходять у могилу; | and let us swallow him alive, as Hades would, and remove the memorial of him from the earth: |
|
13
|
13
|
| наберемо всякого дорогоцінного майна, наповнимо доми наші здобич чю; | let us seize on his valuable property, and let us fill our houses with spoils: |
|
14
|
14
|
| жереб твій ти будеш кидати разом з нами, склад один буде в усіх нас», — | but do thou cast in thy lot with us, and let us all provide a common purse, and let us have one pouch: |
|

|
15
|
| сину мій! не ходи в путь з ними, утримай ногу твою від путі їх, | go not in the way with them, but turn aside thy foot from their paths: |
|
16
|
|
| тому що ноги їхні біжать до зла і поспішають на пролиття крови. | |
|
17
|
17
|
| У очах усіх птахів даремно розставляються тенета, | for nets are not without cause spread for birds. |
|
18
|
18
|
| а роблять за сідку для їхньої крови і підстерігають їхні душі. | For they that are concerned in murder store up evils for themselves; and the overthrow of transgressors is evil. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Такі путі кожного, хто жадає чужого добра: воно віднімає життя у того, хто заволодів ним. | These are the ways of all that perform lawless deeds; for by ungodliness they destroy their own life. |
|

|
20
|
| Премудрість виголошує на вулиці, на площах підносить голос свій, | Wisdom sings aloud in passages, and in the broad places speaks boldly. |
|

|
| у головних місцях зібрань проповідує, біля входів у міські ворота говорить промову свою: | And she makes proclamation on the top of the walls, and sits by the gates of princes; and at the gates of the city boldly says, |
|

|
22
|
| «доки, невігласи, будете любити неуцтво? доки буйні будуть тішитися буйством? доки нерозумні будуть ненавидіти знання? | So long as the simple cleave to justice, they shall not be ashamed: but the foolish being lovers of haughtiness, having become ungodly have hated knowledge, and are become subject to reproofs. |

| Зверніться до мого викривання: ось, я виллю на вас дух мій, сповіщу вам слова мої. | Behold, I will bring forth to you the utterance of my breath, and I will instruct you in my speech. |
|

|
| Я кликала, і ви не послухалися; простягала руку мою, і не було того, хто слухає; | Since I called, and ye did not hearken; and I spoke at length, and ye gave no heed; |
|
25
|
25
|
| і ви відкинули всі мої поради, і викривань моїх не прийняли. | but ye set at nought my counsels, and disregarded my reproofs; |
|
26
|
26
|
| За те і я посміюся з вашої загибелі; порадію, коли прийде на вас жах; | therefore I also will laugh at your destruction; and I will rejoice against you when ruin comes upon you: |
|
27
|
27
|
| коли прийде на вас жах, як буря, і лихо, як вихор, принесеться на вас; коли осягнуть вас скорбота і тиснява. | yea when dismay suddenly comes upon you, and your overthrow shall arrive like a tempest; and when tribulation and distress shall come upon you, or when ruin shall come upon you. |

| Тоді будуть кликати мене, і я не почую; зранку будуть шукати мене, і не знайдуть мене. | For it shall be that when ye call upon me, I will not hearken to you: wicked men shall seek me, but shall not find me. |
|

|
| За те, що вони зненавиділи знання і не обрали для себе страху Господнього, | For they hated wisdom, and did not choose the word of the Lord: |
|
30
|
30
|
| не прийняли поради моєї, знехтували усі викривання мої; | neither would they attend to my counsels, but derided my reproofs. |
|
31
|
31
|
| за те і будуть вони споживати від плодів шляхів своїх і насичуватися від помислів їх. | Therefore shall they eat the fruits of their own way, and shall be filled with their own ungodliness. |
|
32
|
32
|
| Тому що впертість невігласів уб’є їх, і безтурботність нерозумних погубить їх, | For because they wronged the simple, they shall be slain; and an inquisition shall ruin the ungodly. |
|
33
|
33
|
| а той, хто слухає мене, буде жити безпечно і спокійно, не боячись зла». | But he that hearkens to me shall dwell in confidence, and shall rest securely from all evil. |
|

Chapter 2
|

|
| Сину мій! якщо ти приймеш слова мої і збережеш при собі заповіді мої, | My son, if thou wilt receive the utterance of my commandment, and hide it with thee; |
|
2
|
2
|
| так що вухо твоє зробиш уважним до мудрости і нахилиш серце твоє до роздумування; | thine ear shall hearken to wisdom; thou shalt also apply thine heart to understanding, and shalt apply it to the instruction of thy son. |
|

|
3
|
| якщо будеш закликати знання і звертатися до розуму; | For if thou shalt call to wisdom, and utter thy voice for understanding; |
|
4
|
4
|
| якщо будеш шукати його, як срібла, і відшукувати його, як скарб, | and if thou shalt seek it as silver, and search diligently for it as for treasures; |
|
5
|
5
|
| то зрозумієш страх Господній і знайдеш пізнання про Бога. | then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. |
|
6
|
6
|
| Тому що Господь дає мудрість; з уст Його — знання і розум; | For the Lord gives wisdom; and from his presence come knowledge and understanding, |
|

|
7
|
| Він зберігає для праведних спасіння; Він — щит для тих, хто ходить непорочно; | and he treasures up salvation for them that walk uprightly: he will protect their way; |
|
8
|
8
|
| Він охороняє путі правди й оберігає стежки святих Своїх. | that he may guard the righteous ways: and he will preserve the way of them that fear him. |
|
9
|
9
|
| Тоді ти зрозумієш правду і правосуддя і прямоту, усякий добрий шлях. | Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment; and shalt direct all thy course aright. |
|
10
|
10
|
| Коли мудрість увійде в серце твоє, і знання буде приємне душі твоїй, | For if wisdom shall come into thine understanding, and discernment shall seem pleasing to thy soul, |
|
11
|
11
|
| тоді розсудливість буде оберігати тебе, розум буде охороняти тебе, | good counsel shall guard thee, and holy understanding shall keep thee; |
|
12
|
12
|
| щоб спасти тебе від шляху злого, від людини, яка говорить неправду, | to deliver thee from the evil way, and from the man that speaks nothing faithfully. |
|
13
|
13
|
| від тих, які залишають путі прямі, щоб ходити шляхами темряви; | Alas for those who forsake right paths, to walk in ways of darkness; |
|
14
|
14
|
| від тих, які радіють, чинячи зло, захоплюються злою розпустою, | who rejoice in evils, and delight in wicked perverseness; |
|
15
|
15
|
| шляхи яких криві, і які блукають на стежках своїх; | whose paths are crooked, and their courses winding; |
|
16
|
16
|
| щоб спасти тебе від дружини іншого, від чужої, яка промовляє солодкі слова свої, | to remove thee far from the straight way, and to estrange thee from a righteous purpose. My son, let not evil counsel overtake thee, |
|
17
|
17
|
| яка залишила керівника юности своєї і забула завіт Бога свого. | of her who has forsaken the instruction of her youth, and forgotten the covenant of God. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Дім її веде до смерти, і шляхи її — до мерців; | For she has fixed her house near death, and guided her wheels near Hades with the giants. |
|
19
|
19
|
| ніхто з тих, що ввійшли до неї, не повертається і не вступає на путь життя. | None that go by her shall return, neither shall they take hold of right paths, for they are not apprehended of the years of life. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Тому ходи шляхом добрих і тримайся стежок праведників, | For had they gone in good paths, they would have found the paths of righteousness easy. |
|
21
|
21
|
| бо праведні будуть жити на землі, і непорочні будуть перебувати на ній; | For the upright shall dwell in the earth, and the holy shall be left behind in it. |
|
22
|
22
|
| а беззаконні будуть знищені з землі, і віроломні викорінені з неї. | The paths of the ungodly shall perish out of the earth, and transgressors shall be driven away from it. |
|
Глава 3
|
Chapter 3
|
|
1
|
1
|
| Сину мій! повчання мого не забувай, і заповіді мої нехай зберігає серце твоє; | My son, forget not my laws; but let thine heart keep my words: |
|
2
|
2
|
| бо довготи днів, літ життя і миру вони додадуть тобі. | for length of existence, and years of life, and peace, shall they add to thee. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Милість і істина нехай не залишають тебе: обв’яжи ними шию твою, напиши їх на скрижалі серця твого, | Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; but bind them about thy neck: |
|
4
|
4
|
| і знайдеш милість і благовоління в очах Бога і людей. | so shalt thou find favour: and do thou provide things honest in the sight of the Lord, and of men. |
|
5
|
5
|
| Уповай на Господа всім серцем твоїм, і не покладайся на розум твій. | Trust in God with all thine heart; and be not exalted in thine own wisdom. |
|
6
|
6
|
| У всіх путях твоїх пізнавай Його, і Він направить стежки твої. | In all thy ways acquaint thyself with her, that she may rightly direct thy paths. |
|
7
|
7
|
| Не будь мудрецем в очах твоїх; бійся Господа і віддаляйся від зла: | Be not wise in thine own conceit; but fear God, and depart from all evil. |
|
8
|
8
|
| це буде здоров’ям для тіла твого і споживою для кісток твоїх. | Then shall there be health to thy body, and good keeping to thy bones. |
|
9
|
9
|
| Шануй Господа від майна твого і від початків усіх прибутків твоїх, | Honour the Lord with thy just labours, and give him the first of thy fruits of righteousness: |
|
10
|
10
|
| і наповняться скарбниці твої до надлишку, і точила твої будуть переливатися новим вином. | that thy storehouses may be completely filled with corn, and that thy presses may burst forth with wine. |
|
11
|
11
|
| Покарання Господнього, сину мій, не відкидай, і не тяготися викриванням Його; | My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: |
|
12
|
12
|
| бо кого любить Господь, того карає і благоволить до того, як батько до сина свого. | for whom the Lord loves, he rebukes, and scourges every son whom he receives. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Блаженний муж, який здобув мудрість, і людина, яка придбала розум, — | Blessed is the man who has found wisdom, and the mortal who knows prudence. |
|
14
|
14
|
| тому що надбання її краще за придбання срібла, і прибутку від неї більше, ніж від золота: | For it is better to traffic for her, than for treasures of gold and silver. |
|
15
|
15
|
| вона дорожче за дорогоцінне каміння; [ніяке зло не може противитися їй; вона добре відома всім, хто наближається до неї,] і ніщо з бажаного тобою не зрівняється з нею. | And she is more valuable than precious stones: no evil thing shall resist her: she is well known to all that approach her, and no precious thing is equal to her in value. |

| Довголіття — у правиці її, а в лівій (руці) у неї — багатство і слава; [з уст її виходить правда; закон і милість вона на язиці носить;] | For length of existence and years of life are in her right hand; and in her left hand are wealth and glory: |
|

|
17
|
| путі її — путі приємні, і всі стежки її — мирні. | Her ways are good ways, and all her paths are peaceful. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Вона — древо життя для тих, які здобувають її, — і блаженні, які зберігають її! | She is a tree of life to all that lay hold upon her; and she is a secure help to all that stay themselves on her, as on the Lord. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Господь премудрістю заснував землю, небеса утвердив розумом; | God by wisdom founded the earth, and by prudence he prepared the heavens. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Його премудрістю розкрилися безодні, і хмари кроплять росою. | By understanding were the depths broken up, and the clouds dropped water. |
|
21
|
21
|
| Сину мій! не випускай їх з очей твоїх; зберігай розсудливість і розважливість, | My son, let them not pass from thee, but keep my counsel and understanding: |
|
22
|
22
|
| і вони будуть життям для душі твоєї і прикрасою для шиї твоєї. | that thy soul may live, and that there may be grace round thy neck; |
|
23
|
23
|
| Тоді безпечно підеш шляхом твоїм, і нога твоя не спіткнеться. | that thou mayest go confidently in peace in all thy ways, and that thy foot may not stumble. |
|
24
|
24
|
| Коли ляжеш спати, — не будеш боятися; і коли заснеш, — сон твій приємним буде. | For if thou rest, thou shalt be undismayed; and if thou sleep, thou shalt slumber sweetly. |
|
25
|
25
|
| Не убоїшся несподіваного страху і пагуби від нечестивих, коли вона прийде; | And thou shalt not be afraid of alarm coming upon thee, neither of approaching attacks of ungodly men. |
|
26
|
26
|
| тому що Господь буде упованням твоїм і збереже ногу твою від уловлення. | For the Lord shall be over all thy ways, and shall establish thy foot that thou be not moved. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Не відмовляй у благодіянні нужденному, коли рука твоя в силі зробити його. | Forbear not to do good to the poor, whensoever thy hand may have power to help him. |
|
28
|
28
|
| Не говори другові твоєму: «піди і прийди знову, і завтра я дам», коли ти маєш при собі. [Тому що ти не знаєш, що принесе прийдешній день.] | Say not, Come back another time, to-morrow I will give; while thou art able to do him good: for thou knowest not what the next day will bring forth. |

| Не замишляй проти ближнього твого зла, коли він без побоювання живе з тобою. | Devise not evil against thy friend, living near thee and trusting in thee. |
|

|

|
| Не сварися з людиною без причини, коли вона не зробила зла тобі. | Be not ready to quarrel with a man without a cause, lest he do thee some harm. |
|
31
|
31
|
| Не змагайся з людиною, яка чинить насилля, і не обирай жодного зі шляхів її; | Procure not the reproaches of bad men, neither do thou covet their ways. |
|
32
|
32
|
| тому що мерзота перед Господом розпусний, а з праведними у Нього спілкування. | For every transgressor is unclean before the Lord; neither does he sit among the righteous. |
|
33
|
33
|
| Прокляття Господнє на домі нечестивого, а житло благочестивих Він благословляє. | The curse of God is in the houses of the ungodly; but the habitations of the just are blessed. |
|
34
|
34
|
| Якщо з кощунників Він насміхається, то смиренним дає благодать. | The Lord resists the proud; but he gives grace to the humble. |
|
35
|
35
|
| Мудрі успадковують славу, а нерозумні — ганьбу. | The wise shall inherit glory; but the ungodly have exalted their own dishonour. |
|
Глава 4
|
Chapter 4
|
|
1
|
1
|
| Слухайте, діти, настановлення батька, і пильнуйте, щоб навчитися розуму, | Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. |
|
2
|
2
|
| тому що я дав вам добре вчення. Не залишайте заповіді моєї. | For I give you a good gift; forsake ye not my law. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Бо і я був син у батька мого, і єдиний у матері моєї, яка ніжно любила мене, | For I also was a son obedient to my father, and loved in the sight of my mother: |
|
4
|
4
|
| і він учив мене і говорив мені: нехай утримає серце твоє слова мої; зберігай заповіді мої, і живи. | who spoke and instructed me, saying, Let our speech be fixed in thine heart, keep our commandments, forget them not: |
|
5
|
5
|
| Здобувай мудрість, здобувай розум; не забувай цього і не відхиляйся від слів вуст моїх. | and do not neglect the speech of my mouth. |
|
6
|
6
|
| Не залишай її, і вона буде охороняти тебе; люби її, і вона буде оберігати тебе. | And forsake it not, and it shall cleave to thee: love it, and it shall keep thee. |
|
7
|
|
| Головне — мудрість: здобувай мудрість, і всім майном твоїм здобувай розум. | |
|
8
|
8
|
| Високо цінуй її, і вона піднесе тебе; вона прославить тебе, якщо ти приліпишся до неї; | Secure it, and it shall exalt thee: honour it, that it may embrace thee; |
|
9
|
9
|
| покладе на голову твою прекрасний вінок, доставить тобі чудовий вінець. | that it may give unto thy head a crown of graces, and may cover thee with a crown of delight. |
|
10
|
10
|
| Слухай, сину мій, і прийми слова мої, — і примножаться тобі літа життя. | Hear, my son, and receive my words; and the years of thy life shall be increased, that the resources of thy life may be many. |
|
11
|
11
|
| Я вказую тобі путь мудрости, веду тебе стежками прямими. | For I teach thee the ways of wisdom; and I cause thee to go in right paths. |
|
12
|
12
|
| Коли підеш, не буде утрудненим хід твій, і коли побіжиш, не спіткнешся. | For when thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not be distressed. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Міцно тримайся наставляння, не залишай, зберігай його, тому що воно — життя твоє. | Take hold of my instruction; let it not go,—but keep it for thyself for thy life. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Не вступай на стежку нечестивих і не ходи шляхом злих; | Go not in the ways of the ungodly, neither covet the ways of transgressors. |
|
15
|
15
|
| залиш його, не ходи ним, ухилися від нього і пройди мимо; | In whatever place they shall pitch their camp, go not thither; but turn from them, and pass away. |
|
16
|
16
|
| тому що вони не заснуть, якщо не зроблять зла; пропадає сон у них, якщо вони не доведуть кого до падіння; | For they cannot sleep, unless they have done evil: their sleep is taken away, and they rest not. |
|
17
|
17
|
| бо вони їдять хліб беззаконня і п’ють вино крадіння. | For these live upon the bread of ungodliness, and are drunken with wine of transgression. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Путь праведних — як світило променисте, яке більше і більше світлішає до повного дня. | But the ways of the righteous shine like light; they go on and shine, until the day be fully come. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Путь же беззаконних — як темрява; вони не знають, об що спіткнуться. | But the ways of the ungodly are dark; they know not how they stumble. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Сину мій! до слів моїх дослухайся, і до промов моїх прихили вухо твоє; | My son, attend to my speech; and apply thine ear to my words: |
|
21
|
21
|
| нехай не відходять вони від очей твоїх; зберігай їх усередині серця твого: | that thy fountains may not fail thee; keep them in thine heart. |
|
22
|
22
|
| тому що вони життя для того, хто знайшов їх, і здоров’я для всього тіла його. | For they are life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh. |
|

|

|
| Більше за все бережене зберігай серце твоє, тому що з нього джерела життя. | Keep thine heart with the utmost care; for out of these are the issues of life. |
|
24
|
24
|
| Відкинь від себе облудність уст, і лукавство язика віддали від себе. | Remove from thee a froward mouth, and put far away from thee unjust lips. |
|
25
|
25
|
| Очі твої нехай прямо дивляться, і вії твої нехай будуть спрямовані прямо перед тобою. | Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids assent to just things. |
|

|
26
|
| Обміркуй стежку для ноги твоєї, і всі путі твої нехай будуть твердими. | Make straight paths for thy feet, and order thy ways aright. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Не ухиляйся ні праворуч, ні ліворуч; віддали ногу твою від зла, | Turn not aside to the right hand nor to the left, but turn away thy foot from an evil way: |
|
28
|
|
| [тому що шляхи праві спостерігає Господь, а ліві — зіпсовані. | |
|
29
|
|
| Він же прямими зробить путі твої, і ходу твою у мирі влаштує.] | |
|
Глава 5
|
Chapter 5
|
|

|
| Сину мій! дослухайся до мудрости моєї, і прихили вухо твоє до розуму мого, | My son, attend to my wisdom, and apply thine ear to my words; |
|
2
|
2
|
| щоб дотриматися розсудливости, і щоб вуста твої зберегли знання. [Не слухай улесливої жінки;] | that thou mayest keep good understanding, and the discretion of my lips gives thee a charge. Give no heed to a worthless woman; |
|
3
|
3
|
| тому що мед виливають вуста чужої дружини, і м’якша за єлей мова її; | for honey drops from the lips of a harlot, who for a season pleases thy palate: |
|
4
|
4
|
| але наслідки від неї гіркі, як полинь, гострі, як меч двогострий; | but afterwards thou wilt find her more bitter than gall, and sharper than a two-edged sword. |
|
5
|
5
|
| ноги її сходять до смерти, стопи її досягають пекла. | For the feet of folly lead those who deal with her down to the grave with death; and her steps are not established. |
|
6
|
6
|
| Якби ти захотів осягнути стежку життя її, то путі її непостійні, і ти не узнаєш їх. | For she goes not upon the paths of life; but her ways are slippery, and not easily known. |
|
7
|
7
|
| Отже, діти, слухайте мене і не відступайте від слів уст моїх. | Now then, my son, hear me, and make not my words of none effect. |
|
8
|

|
| Тримай далі від неї путь твою і не підходь близько до дверей дому її, | Remove thy way far from her; draw not near to the doors of her house: |
|
9
|
9
|
| щоб здоров’я твого не віддати іншим і років твоїх мучителеві; | lest thou give away thy life to others, and thy substance to the merciless: |
|
10
|
10
|
| щоб не насичувалися силою твоєю чужі, і труди твої не були для чужого дому. | lest strangers be filled with thy strength, and thy labours come into the houses of strangers; |
|
11
|
11
|
| І ти будеш стогнати після, коли плоть твоя і тіло твоє будуть виснажені, — | and thou repent at last, when the flesh of thy body is consumed, |
|
12
|
12
|
| і скажеш: «навіщо я ненавидів наставляння, і серце моє зневажало викривання, | and thou shalt say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart avoided reproofs! |
|
13
|
13
|
| і я не слухав голоси вчителів моїх, не прихиляв вуха мого до наставників моїх: | I heard not the voice of him that instructed me, and taught me, neither did I apply mine ear. |
|
14
|
14
|
| ледь не впав я у всяке зло серед зібрання і суспільства!» | I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Пий воду з твоєї водойми і ту, яка тече з твого колодязя. | Drink waters out of thine own vessels, and out of thine own springing wells. |
|

|

| він помирає без наставляння, і від великого безумства свого губиться. | Such a man dies with the uninstructed; and he is cast forth from the abundance of his own substance, and has perished through folly. |

| ти обплутав себе словами вуст твоїх, упійманий словами вуст твоїх. | For a man's own lips become a strong snare to him, and he is caught with the lips of his own mouth. |

| Зроби ж, сину мій, ось що, і визволи себе, тому що ти потрапив до рук ближнього твого: піди, упади до ніг і благай ближнього твого; | My son, do what I command thee, and deliver thyself; for on thy friend's account thou art come into the power of evil men: faint not, but stir up even thy friend for whom thou art become surety. |

| підступність у серці її: вона замишляє зло повсякчас, сіє розбрат. | His perverse heart devises evils: at all times such a one causes troubles to a city. |

| Зате несподівано прийде погибель її, раптом буде розбита — без зцілення. | Therefore his destruction shall come suddenly; overthrow and irretrievable ruin. |

| Ось шість, що ненавидить Господь, навіть сім, що мерзота для душі Його: | For he rejoices in all things which God hates, and he is ruined by reason of impurity of soul. |

| очі горді, мова неправдива і руки, що проливають кров невинну, | The eye of the haughty, a tongue unjust, hands shedding the blood of the just; |

| Те саме буває і з тим, хто входить до дружини ближнього свого: хто доторкнеться до неї, не залишиться без провини. | So is he that goes in to a married woman; he shall not be held guiltless, neither any one that touches her. |

| Не дарують злодієві, якщо він краде, щоб наситити душу свою, коли він голодний; | It is not to be wondered at if one should be taken stealing, for he steals that when hungry he may satisfy his soul: |

| але, будучи упійманим, він заплатить всемеро, віддасть усе майно дому свого. | but if he should be taken, he shall repay sevenfold, and shall deliver himself by giving all his goods. |

| Хто ж перелюбствує з жінкою, у того немає розуму; той губить душу свою, хто чинить це: | But the adulterer through want of sense procures destruction to his soul. |

| Сину мій! зберігай слова мої і заповіді мої приховай у себе. [Сину мій! шануй Господа, — і зміцнишся, і, крім Нього, не бійся нікого.] | My son, keep my words, and hide with thee my commandments. |

| Зберігай заповіді мої і живи, і вчення моє, як зіниця очей твоїх. | keep my commandments, and thou shalt live; and keep my words as the pupils of thine eyes. |
|

|
| Нав’яжи їх на персти твої, напиши їх на скрижалі серця твого. | And bind them on thy fingers, and write them on the table of thine heart. |
|

|
| Скажи мудрості: «ти сестра моя!» і розум назви рідним твоїм, | Say that wisdom is thy sister, and gain prudence as an acquaintance for thyself; |

|
| щоб вони охороняли тебе від дружини іншого, від чужої, яка пом’якшує слова свої. | that she may keep thee from the strange and wicked woman, if she should assail thee with flattering words. |

| Ось, одного разу дивився я у вікна дому мого, крізь ґрати мої, | For she looks from a window out of her house into the streets, at one whom she may see of the senseless ones, a young man void of understanding, |

| і побачив серед недосвідчених, помітив між молодими людьми нерозумного юнака, | passing by the corner in the passages near her house, |

|
| який переходив площу біля рогу її і йшов по дорозі до дому її, | and speaking, in the dark of the evening, |

| у сутінках під вечір дня, у нічній темряві і в мороці. | when there happens to be the stillness of night and of darkness: |

| І ось — назустріч йому жінка, в убранні блудниці, з підступним серцем, | and the woman meets him having the appearance of a harlot, that causes the hearts of young men to flutter. |

| галаслива і невгамовна; ноги її не живуть у домі її: | And she is fickle, and debauched, and her feet abide not at home. |
|

|
| то на вулиці, то на площах, і біля кожного рогу чинить вона кови. | For at one time she wanders without, and at another time she lies in wait in the streets, at every corner. |

| Вона схопила його, цілувала його, і з безсоромним обличчям говорила йому: | Then she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him, |

| килимами я вбрала постіль мою, різнобарвними тканинами єгипетськими; | I have spread my bed with sheets, and I have covered it with double tapestry from Egypt. |

| спальню мою напахтила смирною, алое і корицею; | I have sprinkled my couch with saffron, and my house with cinnamon. |

| зайди, будемо упиватися ніжностями до ранку, насолодимося любов’ю, | Come, and let us enjoy love until the morning; come, and let us embrace in love. |

| тому що чоловіка немає вдома: він вирушив у далеку дорогу; | For my husband is not at home, but is gone on a long journey, |

| гаманець срібла взяв із собою; прийде додому до дня повномісяччя». | having taken in his hand a bundle of money: after many days he will return to his house. |

| Численними ласкавими словами вона звабила його, м’якістю вуст своїх оволоділа ним. | So with much converse she prevailed on him to go astray, and with the snares of her lips she forced him from the right path. |

| Негайно він пішов за нею, як віл йде на забій, [і як пес — на ланцюг,] і як олень — на постріл, | And he followed her, being gently led on, and that as an ox is led to the slaughter, and as a dog to bonds, or as a hart shot in the liver with an arrow: |

| доки стріла не простромить печінки його; як пташка кидається в тенета, і не знає, що вони — на погибель її. | and he hastens as a bird into a snare, not knowing that he is running for his life. |

| Отже, діти, слухайте мене і дослухайтеся до слів моїх. | Now then, my son, hearken to me, and attend to the words of my mouth. |

| Нехай не ухиляється серце твоє на путі її, не блукай по стежках її, | Let not thine heart turn aside to her ways: |

| тому що багатьох повалила вона пораненими, і багато сильних убиті нею: | for she has wounded and cast down many, and those whom she has slain are innumerable. |

| дім її — дорога у пекло, яка сходить у внутрішні оселі смерти. | Her house is the way of hell, leading down to the chambers of death. |

| Чи не премудрість взиває? і чи не розум підносить голос свій? | Thou shalt proclaim wisdom, that understanding may be obedient to thee. |

| Вона стає на підвищених місцях, при шляху, на роздоріжжях; | For she is on lofty eminences, and stands in the midst of the ways. |
|

|
| вона взиває біля воріт при вході в місто, біля входу в двері: | For she sits by the gates of princes, and sings in the entrances, saying, |
|

|
4
|
| «до вас, люди, взиваю я, і до синів людських голос мій! | You, O men, I exhort; and utter my voice to the sons of men. |
|

|
| Навчіться, нерозумні, розсудливости, і дурні — розуму. | O ye simple, understand subtlety, and ye that are untaught, imbibe knowledge. |
|

|
| Слухайте, тому що я буду говорити важливе, і слова вуст моїх — правда; | Hearken to me; for I will speak solemn truths; and will produce right sayings from my lips. |
|

|
| бо істину промовить язик мій, і нечестя — мерзота для вуст моїх; | For my throat shall meditate truth; and false lips are an abomination before me. |
|

|
| усі слова вуст моїх справедливі; немає у них підступу і лукавства; | All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing in them wrong or perverse. |

|
| усі вони ясні для розумного і справедливі для тих, що здобули знання. | They are all evident to those that understand, and right to those that find knowledge. |
|

|
| Прийміть учення моє, а не срібло; краще знання, ніж добірне золото; | Receive instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than tried gold. |
|

|
| тому що мудрість краща за перли, і ніщо з бажаного не зрівняється з нею. | For wisdom is better than precious stones; and no valuable substance is of equal worth with it. |

| Я, премудрість, живу з розумом і шукаю розсудливого знання. | I wisdom have dwelt with counsel and knowledge, and I have called upon understanding. |

| Страх Господній — ненавидіти зло; гордість і зарозумілість і злу путь і підступні вуста я ненавиджу. | The fear of the Lord hates unrighteousness, and insolence, and pride, and the ways of wicked men; and I hate the perverse ways of bad men. |

| У мене рада і правда; я розум, у мене сила. | Counsel and safety are mine: prudence is mine, and strength is mine. |
|

|
| Мною царі царюють і володарі узаконюють правду; | By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. |

| мною керуються начальники і вельможі й усі судді землі. | By me nobles become great, and monarchs by me rule over the earth. |

| плоди мої кращі за золото, і золото найчистіше, і користи від мене більше, ніж від добірного срібла. | It is better to have my fruit than to have gold and precious stones; and my produce is better than choice silver. |

| Я ходжу шляхом правди, стежками правосуддя, | I walk in ways of righteousness, and am conversant with the paths of judgment; |

| щоб доставити тим, хто любить мене, істотне благо, і скарбниці їхні я наповнюю. [Коли я звіщу те, що буває щодня, то не забуду перелічити те, що від віку.] | that I may divide substance to them that love me, and may fill their treasures with good things. |

| Господь мав мене початком путі Своєї, раніше творінь Своїх, споконвіку; | The Lord made me the beginning of his ways for his works. |

| радіючи на земному колі Його, і радість моя була із синами людськими. | For he rejoiced when he had completed the world, and rejoiced among the children of men. |

| Отже, діти, послухайте мене; і блаженні ті, які зберігають путі мої! | Now then, my son, hear me: blessed is the man who shall hearken to me, and the mortal who shall keep my ways; |

| Премудрість збудувала собі дім, витесала сім стовпів його, | Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars. |

| заколола жертву, розбавила вино своє і приготувала в себе трапезу; | She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table. |
|

|
| послала слуг своїх проголосити з височин міських: | She has sent forth her servants, calling with a loud proclamation to the feast, saying, |
|

|
| «хто нерозумний, звернися сюди!» І бідним на розум вона сказала: | Whoso is foolish, let him turn aside to me: and to them that want understanding she says, |
|

|
| «йдіть, їжте хліб мій і пийте вино, мною розчинене; | Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you. |
|

|
| залиште нерозумне, і живіть, і ходіть шляхом розуму». | Leave folly, that ye may reign for ever; and seek wisdom, and improve understanding by knowledge. |

| Той, хто повчає кощунника, наживе собі неславу, і той, хто викриває нечестивого — пляму собі. | He that reproves evil men shall get dishonour to himself; and he that rebukes an ungodly man shall disgrace himself. |

| Не викривай кощунника, щоб він не зненавидів тебе; викривай мудрого, і він полюбить тебе; | Rebuke not evil men, lest they should hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. |

| Не приносять користи скарби неправедні, правда ж рятує від смерти. | Treasures shall not profit the lawless: but righteousness shall deliver from death. |

| Не допустить Господь терпіти голод душі праведного, надбання ж нечестивих вивергне. | The Lord will not famish a righteous soul: but he will overthrow the life of the ungodly. |

| Лінива рука робить бідним, а рука старанна збагачує. | Poverty brings a man low: but the hands of the vigorous make rich. |

| Хто збирає влітку — син розумний, а хто спить під час жнив — син безпутний. | A wise son is saved from heat: but a lawless son is blighted of the winds in harvest. |

| У вустах нерозумного — бич гордости; вуста ж мудрих охороняють їх. | Out of the mouth of fools comes a rod of pride; but the lips of the wise preserve them. |

| Де немає волів, там ясла порожні; а багато прибутку від сили волів. | Where no oxen are, the cribs are clean; but where there is abundant produce, the strength of the ox is apparent. |

| Вірний свідок не обманює, а свідок неправдивий наговорить багато неправди. | A faithful witness does not lie; but an unjust witness kindles falsehoods. |

| Розпусний шукає мудрости, і не знаходить; а для розумного знання легке. | Thou shalt seek wisdom with bad men, and shalt not find it; but discretion is easily available with the prudent. |

| Запальна людина збуджує розбрат, а терпляча утишує незгоду. | A passionate man stirs up strife; but he that is slow to anger appeases even a rising one. |

| Правильні терези і вагові чаші — від Господа; від Нього ж усі гирі в торбі. | The poise of the balance is righteousness with the Lord; and his works are righteous measures. |

| Мерзота для царів — діло беззаконне, тому що правдою утверджується престіл. | An evil-doer is an abomination to a king; for the throne of rule is established by righteousness. |

| Приємні царю вуста правдиві, і того, хто говорить істину, він любить. | Righteous lips are acceptable to a king; and he loves right words. |

| Царський гнів — вісник смерти; але мудра людина умилостивить його. | The anger of a king is a messenger of death; but a wise man will pacify him. |

| У світлому погляді царя — життя, і благовоління його — як хмара з пізнім дощем. | The son of a king is in the light of life; and they that are in favour with him are as a cloud of latter rain. |

| Розумний раб панує над безпутним сином і між братами розділить спадщину. | A wise servant shall have rule over foolish masters, and shall divide portions among brethren. |
|

|
| Плавильня — для срібла, і горно — для золота, а серця випробовує Господь. | As silver and gold are tried in a furnace, so are choice hearts with the Lord. |

| Слова вуст людських — глибокі води; джерело мудрости — струменевий потік. | A word in the heart of a man is a deep water, and a river and fountain of life spring forth. |

| Недобре бути небезстороннім до нечестивого, щоб звергнути праведного на суді. | It is not good to accept the person of the ungodly, nor is it holy to pervert justice in judgment. |

| Глупота людини спотворює путь її, а серце її обурюється на Господа. | The folly of a man spoils his ways: and he blames God in his heart. |

| Багатство додає багато друзів, а бідного залишає і друг його. | Wealth acquires many friends; but the poor is deserted even of the friend he has. |
|

|

|
| Лжесвідок не залишиться непокараним, і хто говорить неправду, не врятується. | A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that accuses unjustly shall not escape. |
|

|
| Багато хто запобігає перед знатними, і всякий — друг людині, яка дає подарунки. | Many court the favour of kings; but every bad man becomes a reproach to another man. |
|

|
| Бідного ненавидять усі брати його, тим більше друзі його віддаляються від нього: женеться за ними, щоб поговорити, але і цього немає. | Every one who hates his poor brother shall also be far from friendship. Good understanding will draw near to them that know it, and a sensible man will find it. He that does much harm perfects mischief; and he that uses provoking words shall not escape. |

| Непристойна нерозумному пишність, тим більше рабові панування над князями. | Delight does not suit a fool, nor is it seemly if a servant should begin to rule with haughtiness. |

|
| Розсудливість робить людину повільною на гнів, і слава для неї — бути поблажливою до провин. | A merciful man is long-suffering; and his triumph overtakes transgressors. |
|

| Гнів царя — як ревіння лева, а благовоління його — як роса на траву. | The threatening of a king is like the roaring of a lion; but as dew on the grass, so is his favour. |

| Нерозумний син — руйнування для батька свого, і сварлива дружина — стічна труба. | A foolish son is a disgrace to his father: vows paid out of the hire of a harlot are not pure. |

| Лінощі занурюють у сонливість, і недбайлива душа буде терпіти голод. | Cowardice possesses the effeminate man; and the soul of the sluggard shall hunger. |
|

|
| Хто зберігає заповідь, той зберігає душу свою, а хто не дбає про путі свої, — загине. | He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall perish. |

|
| Хто благодіє бідному, дає в борг Господу, і Він воздасть йому за благодіяння його. | He that has pity on the poor lends to the Lord; and he will recompense to him according to his gift. |
|

|

|
| Карай сина свого, доки є надія, і не обурюйся криком його. | Chasten thy son, for so he shall be hopeful; and be not exalted in thy soul to haughtiness. |
|

|
| Гнівливий нехай терпить покарання, тому що, коли пощадиш його, доведеться тобі ще більше карати його. | A malicious man shall be severely punished, and if he commit injury, he shall also lose his life. |

|
| Слухайся поради і приймай викривання, щоб стати тобі згодом мудрим. | Hear, son, the instruction of thy father, that thou mayest be wise at thy latter end. |

| Багато задумів у серці людини, але відбудеться тільки визначене Господом. | There are many thoughts in a man's heart; but the counsel of the Lord abides for ever. |

| Радість людині — добродійність її, і бідна людина краще, ніж неправдива. | Mercy is a fruit to a man: and a poor man is better than a rich liar. |
|

|
| Страх Господній веде до життя, і хто має його, завжди буде задоволений, і зло не осягне його. | The fear of the Lord is life to a man: and he shall lodge without fear in places where knowledge is not seen. |
|

| Лінивий опускає руку свою у чашу, і не хоче донести її до рота свого. | He that unjustly hides his hands in his bosom, will not even bring them up to his mouth. |
|

|
| Якщо ти покараєш кощунника, то і простий зробиться розсудливим; і якщо викриєш розумного, то він зрозуміє наставляння. | When a pestilent character is scourged, a simple man is made wiser: and if thou reprove a wise man, he will understand discretion. |

| Хто розоряє батька і виганяє матір, — син соромітний і безчесний. | He that dishonours his father, and drives away his mother, shall be disgraced and shall be exposed to reproach. |

| Вино — глузливе, сикера — буйна; і всякий, хто захоплюється ними, нерозумний. | Wine is an intemperate thing, and strong drink full of violence: but every fool is entangled with them. |

| Гроза царя — ніби ревіння лева: хто дратує його, той грішить проти самого себе. | The threat of a king differs not from the rage of a lion; and he that provokes him sins against his own soul. |

|
| Шана для людини — відстати від сварки; а всякий дурень задерикуватий. | It is a glory to a man to turn aside from railing; but every fool is entangled with such matters. |

| Лінивець узимку не оре: шукає влітку — і немає нічого. | A sluggard when reproached is not ashamed: so also he who borrows corn in harvest. |

| Праведник ходить у своїй непорочності: блаженні діти його після нього! | He that walks blameless in justice, shall leave his children blessed. |

| Цар, який сидить на престолі суду, розганяє очима своїми все зле. | Whenever a righteous king sits on the throne, no evil thing can stand before his presence. |

|
| Хто може сказати: «я очистив моє серце, я чистий від гріха мого?» | Who will boast that he has a pure heart? or who will boldly say that he is pure from sins? |
|

|
| Неоднакові терези, неоднакова міра, те й інше — мерзота перед Господом. | A large and small weight, and divers measures, are even both of them unclean before the Lord; and so is he that makes them. |
|

|
| Можна узнати навіть отрока за заняттями його, чи чистою і чи правильною буде поведінка його. | A youth when in company with a godly man, will be restrained in his devices, and then his way will be straight. |
|

|
| Вухо, що чує, й око, що бачить, — і те й інше створив Господь. | The ear hears, and the eye sees: even both of them are the Lord's work. |
|

|
| Не люби спати, щоб тобі не зубожіти; тримай відкритими очі твої, і будеш досита їсти хліб. | Love not to speak ill, lest thou be cut off: open thine eyes, and be filled with bread. |
|

|
| «Погано, погано», говорить покупець, а коли відійде, хвалиться. | |
|
15
|
|
| Є золото і багато перлів, але дорогоцінне начиння — вуста розумні. | |
|
16
|
|
| Візьми одяг його, оскільки він заручився за чужого; і за стороннього візьми від нього заставу. | |
|
17
|
|
| Солодкий для людини хліб, придбаний неправдою; але після рот її наповниться жорствою. | |
|
18
|
|
| Починання одержують твердість через нараду, і після наради веди війну. | |
|
19
|
|
| Хто ходить переносником, той відкриває таємницю; і хто широко розкриває рот, з тим не спілкуйся. | |

|
| Хто лихословить батька свого і свою матір, того світильник згасне серед глибокої темряви. | |

| Мерзота перед Господом — неоднакові гирі, і неправильні терези — не добро. | A double weight is an abomination to the Lord; and a deceitful balance is not good in his sight. |

| Від Господа спрямовуються кроки людини; людині ж як дізнатися про шлях свій? | A man's goings are directed of the Lord: how then can a mortal understand his ways? |
|

|

|
| Сітка для людини — поспішно давати обітницю, і після обітниці обмірковувати. | It is a snare to a man hastily to consecrate some of his own property: for in that case repentance comes after vowing. |
|
26
|
26
|
| Мудрий цар розвіє нечестивих і поверне на них колесо. | A wise king utterly crushes the ungodly, and will bring a wheel upon them. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Світильник Господній — дух людини, який випробовує всі глибини серця. | The spirit of man is a light of the Lord, who searches the inmost parts of the belly. |
|
28
|
28
|
| Милість і істина охороняють царя, і милістю він підтримує престіл свій. | Mercy and truth are a guard to a king, and will surround his throne with righteousness. |
|

|
| Слава юнаків — сила їх, а прикраса старих — сивина. | Wisdom is an ornament to young men; and grey hairs are the glory of old men. |
|

|
| Рани від побиття — лікування проти зла, й удари, що проникають у нутрощі утроби. | Bruises and contusions befall bad men; and plagues shall come into the inward parts of their belly. |

| Серце царя — у руці Господа, як потоки вод: куди захоче, туди Він направляє його. | As a rush of water, so is the king's heart in God's hand: he turns it whithersoever he may desire to point out. |

|
| Усякий шлях людини прямий в очах її; але Господь зважує серця. | Every man seems to himself righteous; but the Lord directs the hearts. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Дотримання правди і правосуддя більш угодне Господу, ніж жертва. | To do justly and to speak truth, are more pleasing to God than the blood of sacrifices. |
|
4
|
4
|
| Гордість очей і зарозумілість серця, які відзначають нечестивих, — гріх. | A high-minded man is stout-hearted in his pride; and the lamp of the wicked is sin. |
|

|
|
| Думки старанного прагнуть достатку, а всякий поспішний терпить збиток. | |
|

|

|
| Придбання скарбу неправдивим язиком — скороминучий подув тих, хто шукає смерти. | He that gathers treasures with a lying tongue pursues vanity on to the snares of death. |

|
| Насильство нечестивих упаде на них, тому що вони зреклися дотримуватися правди. | Destruction shall lodge with the ungodly; for they refuse to do justly. |
|

|

|
| Мінливий шлях у людини розбещеної; а хто чистий, того дія пряма. | To the froward God sends froward ways; for his works are pure and right. |
|

|
| Краще жити в кутку на покрівлі, ніж зі сварливою дружиною у просторому домі. | It is better to dwell in a corner on the house-top, than in plastered rooms with unrighteousness, and in an open house. |
|

|

|
| Душа нечестивого бажає зла: не знайде милости в очах його і друг його. | The soul of the ungodly shall not be pitied by any man. |
|

|
11
|
| Коли карається кощунник, простий робиться мудрим; і коли врозумляється мудрий, то він здобуває знання. | When an intemperate man is punished the simple becomes wiser: and a wise man understanding will receive knowledge. |
|

|

|
| Праведник спостерігає за домом нечестивого: як впадають нечестиві у нещастя. | A righteous man understands the hearts of the ungodly: and despises the ungodly for their wickedness. |
|

|

|
| Хто затикає вухо своє від волання бідного, той і сам буде волати, — і не буде почутий. | He that stops his ears from hearing the poor, himself also shall cry, and there shall be none to hear him. |
|

|

|
| Подарунок таємний гасить гнів, і дарунок у пазуху — сильну лють. | A secret gift calms anger: but he that forbears to give stirs up strong wrath. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Дотримання правосуддя — радість для праведника і страх для тих, хто чинить зло. | It is the joy of the righteous to do judgment: but a holy man is abominable with evil-doers. |
|

|
| Людина, що збилася з путі розуму, оселиться в зібранні мерців. | A man that wanders out of the way of righteousness, shall rest in the congregation of giants. |

|
| Хто любить веселощі, зубожіє; а хто любить вино і жир, не розбагатіє. | A poor man loves mirth, loving wine and oil in abundance; |
|

|
| Викупом буде за праведного нечестивий і за прямодушного — лукавий. | and a transgressor is the abomination of a righteous man. |
|

|

|
| Краще жити у землі пустельній, ніж з дружиною сварливою і сердитою. | It is better to dwell in a wilderness than with a quarrelsome and talkative and passionate woman. |
|

|
20
|
| Жаданий скарб і жир — у домі мудрого; а нерозумна людина марнотратить їх. | A desirable treasure will rest on the mouth of the wise; but foolish men will swallow it up. |
|

|
21
|
| Хто дотримується правди і милости, той знайде життя, правду і славу. | The way of righteousness and mercy will find life and glory. |
|

|

|
| Мудрий входить у місто сильних і знищує укріплення, на яке вони сподівалися. | A wise man assaults strong cities, and demolishes the fortress in which the ungodly trusted. |

|
| Хто зберігає вуста свої і язик свій, той зберігає від біди душу свою. | He that keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble. |
|

|

|
| Зарозумілий злодій — кощунник ім’я йому — діє у запалі гордости. | A bold and self-willed and insolent man is called a pest: and he that remembers injuries is a transgressor. |
|
25
|

|
| Жадоба лінивця уб’є його, тому що руки його відмовляються працювати; | Desires kill the sluggard; for his hands do not choose to do anything. |
|

|
26
|
| кожного дня він сильно жадає, а праведник дає і не шкодує. | An ungodly man entertains evil desires all the day: but the righteous is unsparingly merciful and compassionate. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Жертва нечестивих — мерзота, особливо коли з лукавством приносять її. | The sacrifices of the ungodly are abomination to the Lord, for they offer them wickedly. |
|
28
|
28
|
| Лжесвідок загине; а людина, яка говорить те, що знає, буде говорити завжди. | A false witness shall perish; but an obedient man will speak cautiously. |
|

|

|
| Людина нечестива зухвала лицем своїм, а праведний тримає прямо путь свою. | An ungodly man impudently withstands with his face; but the upright man himself understands his ways. |
|

|

|
| Немає мудрости, і немає розуму, і немає ради всупереч Господу. | There is no wisdom, there is no courage, there is no counsel against the ungodly. |
|

|
| Коня готують на день битви, але перемога — від Господа. | A horse is prepared for the day of battle; but help is of the Lord. |

|
| Добре ім’я краще за велике багатство, і добра слава краща за срібло і золото. | A fair name is better than much wealth, and good favour is above silver and gold. |
|

|
| Багатий і бідний зустрічаються один з одним: того й іншого створив Господь. | The rich and the poor meet together; but the Lord made them both. |
|
3
|
3
|
| Розсудливий бачить біду, і ховається; а недосвідчені йдуть уперед, і караються. | An intelligent man seeing a bad man severely punished is himself instructed, but fools pass by and are punished. |
|
4
|
4
|
| За смиренням іде страх Господній, багатство і слава і життя. | The fear of the Lord is the offspring of wisdom, and wealth, and glory, and life. |
|
5
|
5
|
| Терня і сіті на шляху підступного; хто береже душу свою, віддалися від них. | Thistles and snares are in perverse ways; but he that keeps his soul will refrain from them. |
|
6
|
|
| Напоум юнака на початку путі його: він не ухилиться від неї, коли і постаріє. | |
|
7
|
7
|
| Багатий панує над бідним, і боржник робиться рабом позикодавця. | The rich will rule over the poor, and servants will lend to their own masters. |
|

|

|
| Хто сіє неправду, пожне біду, і тростини гніву його не стане. [Людину, яка доброхітно дає, любить Бог, і нестачу діл її поповнить.] | He that sows wickedness shall reap troubles; and shall fully receive the punishment of his deeds. |

|
| Милосердий буде благословлятися, тому що дає бідному від хліба свого. [Перемогу і честь здобуває той, хто дає дари, і навіть оволодіває душею тих, що одержують їх.] | He that has pity on the poor shall himself be maintained; for he has given of his own bread to the poor. |

|
| Прожени кощунника, і віддалиться розбрат, і припиняться сварка і лайка. | Cast out a pestilent person from the council, and strife shall go out with him; for when he sits in the council he dishonours all. |

|
| Хто любить чистоту серця, у того приємність на вустах, тому цар — друг. | The Lord loves holy hearts, and all blameless persons are acceptable with him: a king rules with his lips. |
|

|
| Очі Господа охороняють знання, а слова законопорушника Він відкидає. | But the eyes of the Lord preserve discretion; but the transgressor despises wise words. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Лінивець говорить: «лев на вулиці! посередині площі уб’ють мене!» | The sluggard makes excuses, and says, There is a lion in the ways, and murderers in the streets. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Глибока прірва — вуста блудниць: на кого прогнівається Господь, той упаде туди. | The mouth of a transgressor is a deep pit; and he that is hated of the Lord shall fall into it. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Глупота прив’язалася до серця юнака, але виправна різка віддалить її від нього. | Folly is attached to the heart of a child, but the rod and instruction are then far from him. |
|
16
|
16
|
| Хто кривдить бідного, щоб примножити своє багатство, і хто дає багатому, той зубожіє. | He that oppresses the poor, increases his own substance, yet gives to the rich so as to make it less. |
|
17
|
17
|
| Прихили вухо твоє, і слухай слова мудрих, і серце твоє зверни до мого знання; | Incline thine ear to the words of wise men: hear also my word, and apply thine heart, |

|

|
| тому що утіхою буде, якщо ти будеш зберігати їх у серці твоєму, і вони будуть також на вустах твоїх. | that thou mayest know that they are good: and if thou lay them to heart, they shall also gladden thee on thy lips. |
|

|
| Щоб уповання твоє було на Господа, я вчу тебе і сьогодні, і ти пам’ятай. | That thy hope may be in the Lord, and he may make thy way known to thee. |
|

|

|
| Чи не писав я тобі тричі в порадах і наставляннях, | And do thou too repeatedly record them for thyself on the table of thine heart, for counsel and knowledge. |
|

|
| щоб навчити тебе точних слів істини, щоб ти міг передавати слова істини тим, хто посилає тебе? | I therefore teach thee truth, and knowledge good to hear; that thou mayest answer words of truth to them that question thee. |
|

|
| Не будь грабіжником бідного, тому що він бідний, і не утискуй нещасного біля воріт, | Do no violence to the poor, for he is needy: neither dishonour the helpless man in the gates. |
|

| тому що Господь вступиться у справу їх і візьме душу у грабіжників їхніх. | For the Lord will plead his cause, and thou shalt deliver thy soul in safety. |

|
| Не дружися з гнівливим і не спілкуйся з людиною запальною, | Be not companion to a furious man; neither lodge with a passionate man: |

|
| щоб не навчитися шляхів її і не накинути петлі на душу свою. | lest thou learn of his ways, and get snares to thy soul. |
|

|
| Не будь з тих, які дають руки і ручаються за борги: | Become not surety from respect of a man's person. |
|

|

|
| якщо тобі нема чим заплатити, то для чого доводити себе, щоб узяли постіль твою з-під тебе? | For if those have not whence to give compensation, they will take the bed that is under thee. |
|

|

|
| Не пересувай межі давньої, яку провели батьки твої. | Remove not the old landmarks, which thy fathers placed. |
|

|
| Чи бачив ти людину моторну у своїй справі? Вона буде стояти перед царями, вона не буде стояти перед простими. | It is fit that an observant man and one diligent in his business should attend on kings, and not attend on slothful men. |

| Коли сядеш споживати їжу з володарем, то ретельно спостерігай, що перед тобою, | If thou sit to sup at the table of a prince, consider attentively the things set before thee: |

| і постав перешкоду в гортані твоїй, якщо ти жадібний. | and apply thine hand, knowing that it behoves thee to prepare such meats: but if thou art very insatiable, |

|
| Не захоплюйся ласими стравами його; це — оманна їжа. | desire not his provisions; for these belong to a false life. |
|

|

|
| Не піклуйся про те, щоб нажити багатство; залиш такі думки твої. | If thou art poor, measure not thyself with a rich man; but refrain thyself in thy wisdom. |
|

|
| Спрямуєш очі твої на нього, і — його вже немає; тому що воно зробить собі крила і, як орел, полетить до неба. | If thou shouldest fix thine eye upon him, he will disappear; for wings like an eagle's are prepared for him, and he returns to the house of his master. |

| Не споживай їжі у людини заздрісної і не захоплюйся ласими стравами її; | Sup not with an envious man, neither desire thou his meats: |

| тому що, які думки у душі її, така й вона; «їж і пий», говорить вона тобі, а серце її не з тобою. | so he eats and drinks as if any one should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to thyself, nor eat thy morsel with him: |

| Шматок, який ти з’їв, виблюєш, і добрі слова твої ти витратиш даремно. | for he will vomit it up, and spoil thy fair words. |

|
| У вуха нерозумного не говори, тому що він знехтує розумні слова твої. | Say nothing in the ears of a fool, lest at any time he sneer at thy wise words. |

|
| Не пересувай межі давньої і на поля сиріт не заходь, | Remove not the ancient landmarks; and enter not upon the possession of the fatherless: |

|
| тому що Захисник їх сильний; Він вступиться у справу їх з тобою. | for the Lord is their redeemer; he is mighty, and will plead their cause with thee. |

| Прихили серце твоє до навчання і вуха твої — до розумних слів. | Apply thine heart to instruction, and prepare thine ears for words of discretion. |

| Не залишай юнака без покарання: якщо покараєш його різкою, він не помре; | Refrain not from chastening a child; for if thou beat him with the rod, he shall not die. |

| ти покараєш його різкою і спасеш душу його від пекла. | For thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from death. |

| Сину мій! якщо серце твоє буде мудре, то порадіє і моє серце; | Son, if thy heart be wise, thou shalt also gladden my heart; |

| і нутрощі мої будуть радіти, коли вуста твої будуть говорити справедливе. | and thy lips shall converse with my lips, if they be right. |

| Людина мудра сильна, і людина розумна зміцнює силу свою. | A wise man is better than a strong man; and a man who has prudence than a large estate. |

| Не замислюй зла, нечестивий, проти житла праведника, не спустошуй місця спокою його, | Bring not an ungodly man into the dwelling of the righteous: neither be deceived by the feeding of the belly. |

| бо сім разів упаде праведник, і встане; а нечестиві впадуть у погибель. | For a righteous man will fall seven times, and rise again: but the ungodly shall be without strength in troubles. |

| Сказано також мудрими: мати упередженість на суді — недобре. | And this thing I say to you that are wise for you to learn: It is not good to have respect of persons in judgment. |

| Хто говорить винному: «ти правий», того будуть проклинати народи, того будуть ненавидіти племена; | He that says of the ungodly, He is righteous, shall be cursed by peoples, and hateful among the nations. |

| а викривачів будуть любити, і на них прийде благословення. | But they that reprove him shall appear more excellent, and blessing shall come upon them; |

| Слава Божа — покривати таємницею справу, а слава царів — досліджувати справу. | The glory of God conceals a matter: but the glory of a king honours business. |

| Як небо у висоті й земля в глибині, так серце царів — недослідиме. | Heaven is high, and earth is deep, and a king's heart is unsearchable. |

| Відокреми домішки від срібла, і вийде у срібника сосуд: | Beat the drossy silver, and it shall be made entirely pure. |

| віддали неправедного від царя, і престіл його утвердиться правдою. | Slay the ungodly from before the king, and his throne shall prosper in righteousness. |

| Не вступай поспішно в тяжбу: інакше що будеш робити після закінчення, коли суперник твій осоромить тебе? | Get not suddenly into a quarrel, lest thou repent at last. |

| Веди тяжбу із суперником твоїм, але таємниці іншого не відкривай, | Whenever thy friend shall reproach thee, retreat backward, despise him not; |

|
| щоб не докорив тобі той, хто почує це, і тоді нечестя твоє не відійде від тебе. [Любов і дружба звільняють: збережи їх для себе, щоб не зробитися тобі достойним ганьби; збережи путі твої благовпорядкованими.] | lest thy friend continue to reproach thee, so thy quarrel and enmity shall not depart, but shall be to thee like death. |

| Золота серга і прикраса з чистого золота — мудрий викривач для уважного вуха. | In an ear-ring of gold a precious sardius is also set; so is a wise word to an obedient ear. |

| Що прохолода від снігу під час жнив, те вірний посланець для того, хто посилає його: він доставляє душі господаря свого відраду. | As a fall of snow in the time of harvest is good against heat, so a faithful messenger refreshes those that send him; for he helps the souls of his employers. |

| Знайшов ти мед, — їж, скільки тобі потрібно, щоб не пересититися ним і не виблювати його. | Having found honey, eat only what is enough, lest haply thou be filled, and vomit it up. |

| Не вчащай входити в дім друга твого, щоб ти не надокучив йому і він не зненавидів тебе. | Enter sparingly into thy friend's house, lest he be satiated with thy company, and hate thee. |

| Що молот і меч і гостра стріла, те людина, яка виголошує лжесвідчення проти ближнього свого. | As a club, and a dagger, and a pointed arrow, so also is a man who bears false witness against his friend. |

| Що зламаний зуб і розслаблена нога, те надія на ненадійну [людину] в день біди. | The way of the wicked and the foot of the transgressor shall perish in an evil day. |

| Краще жити в кутку на покрівлі, ніж із сварливою дружиною у просторому домі. | It is better to dwell on a corner of the roof, than with a railing woman in an open house. |

| Що холодна вода для виснаженої спрагою душі, те добра звістка з далекої країни. | As cold water is agreeable to a thirsting soul, so is a good message from a land far off. |

| Що збурене джерело й пошкоджена криниця, те праведник, що падає перед нечестивим. | As if one should stop a well, and corrupt a spring of water, so is it unseemly for a righteous man to fall before an ungodly man. |

| Як сніг улітку і дощ під час жнив, так честь непристойна нерозумному. | As dew in harvest, and as rain in summer, so honour is not seemly for a fool. |

| Як горобець спурхне, як ластівка полетить, так незаслужене прокляття не збудеться. | As birds and sparrows fly, so a curse shall not come upon any one without a cause. |

| Як той, хто прикидається несповна розуму, кидає вогонь, стріли і смерть, | As those who need correction put forth fair words to men, and he that first falls in with the proposal will be overthrown; |

| Важкий камінь, вагомий і пісок; але гнів дурня важчий за них обох. | A stone is heavy, and sand cumbersome; but a fool's wrath is heavier than both. |

| Проростає трава, і з’являється зелень, і збирають гірські трави. | Take care of the herbage in the field, and thou shalt cut grass, and gather the mountain hay; |

| І достатньо козячого молока на їжу тобі, на їжу домашнім твоїм і на споживу служницям твоїм. | My son, thou hast from me words very useful for thy life, and for the life of thy servants. |

| Нечестивий біжить, коли ніхто не женеться за ним; а праведник сміливий, як лев. | The ungodly man flees when no one pursues: but the righteous is confident as a lion. |

| Коли країна відступить від закону, тоді багато в ній начальників; а при розумному і знаючому мужі вона довговічна. | By reason of the sins of ungodly men quarrels arise; but a wise man will quell them. |
|

| Чоловік бідний і який гнобить слабких, те саме, що злива, яка змиває хліб. | A bold man oppresses the poor by ungodly deeds. As an impetuous and unprofitable rain, |
|

|
| Відступники від закону хвалять нечестивих, а ті, що зберігають закон, обурюються на них. | so they that forsake the law praise ungodliness; but they that love the law fortify themselves with a wall. |
|

|
| Злі люди не розуміють справедливости, а ті, що шукають Господа, розуміють усе. | Evil men will not understand judgment: but they that seek the Lord will understand everything. |
|

|
| Краще бідний, який ходить у своїй непорочності, ніж той, хто спотворює шляхи свої, хоч він і багатий. | A poor man walking in truth is better than a rich liar. |
|

|
| Той, хто зберігає закон, — син розумний, а той, хто спілкується з марнотратцями, осоромлює батька свого. | A wise son keeps the law: but he that keeps up debauchery dishonours his father. |
|

|
| Хто примножує майно своє ростом і лихвою, збере його для благодійника бідних. | He that increases his wealth by usuries and unjust gains, gathers it for him that pities the poor. |
|

|
| Хто відхиляє вухо своє від слухання закону, того і молитва — мерзота. | He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even he has made his prayer abominable. |
|

|

|
| Хто спокушає праведних на путь зла, сам упаде в свою яму, а непорочні успадковують добро. | He that causes upright men to err in an evil way, himself shall fall into destruction: transgressors also shall pass by prosperity, but shall not enter into it. |
|

|
| Чоловік багатий — мудрець в очах своїх, але розумний бідняк викриє його. | A rich man is wise in his own conceit; but an intelligent poor man will condemn him. |
|

|
| Коли торжествують праведники, велика слава, але коли підіймаються нечестиві, люди ховаються. | By reason of the help of righteous men great glory arises: but in the places of the ungodly men are caught. |
|

|
| Хто приховує свої злочини, той не буде мати успіху; а хто зізнається і залишає їх, той буде помилуваний. | He that covers his own ungodliness shall not prosper: but he that blames himself shall be loved. |
|

| Блаженна людина, яка завжди перебуває у благоговінні; а хто озлоблює серце своє, той потрапить у біду. | Blessed is the man who religiously fears always: but the hard of heart shall fall into mischiefs. |
|

|
| Як рикаючий лев і голодний ведмідь, так нечестивий володар над бідним народом. | A hungry lion and a thirsty wolf is he, who, being poor, rules over a poor nation. |
|

|
| Нерозумний правитель багато робить утисків, а хто ненавидить користь, продовжить дні. | A king in need of revenues is a great oppressor: but he that hates injustice shall live a long time. |

| Чоловік, винний у пролитті людської крови, буде бігати до могили, щоб хто не схопив його. | He that becomes surety for a man charged with murder shall be an exile, and not in safety. |
|

|
| Хто ходить непорочно, той буде неушкодженим; а хто ходить кривими путями, упаде на одній з них. | He that walks justly is assisted: but he that walks in crooked ways shall be entangled therein. |

| Хто обробляє землю свою, той буде насичуватися хлібом, а хто наслідує бездіяльних, той насититься убогістю. | He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows idleness shall have plenty of poverty. |

| Вірна людина багата благословеннями, а хто поспішає розбагатіти, той не залишиться непокараним. | A man worthy of credit shall be much blessed: but the wicked shall not be unpunished. |

| Бути упередженим — недобре: така людина і за шматок хліба вчинить неправду. | He that reverences not the persons of the just is not good: such a one will sell a man for a morsel of bread. |
|

|
| Поспішає до багатства заздрісна людина, і не думає, що убогість осягне її. | An envious man makes haste to be rich, and knows not that the merciful man will have the mastery over him. |
|

|
| Хто викриває людину, знайде потім більшу приязнь, ніж той, хто лестить язиком. | He that reproves a man's ways shall have more favour than he that flatters with the tongue. |
|

|
24
|
| Хто обкрадає батька свого і матір свою і говорить: «це не гріх», той — спільник грабіжникам. | He that casts off father or mother, and thinks he sins not; the same is partaker with an ungodly man. |
|
25
|
25
|
| Пихатий розпалює сварку, а хто уповає на Господа, буде благоденствувати. | An unbelieving man judges rashly: but he that trusts in the Lord will act carefully. |
|
26
|
26
|
| Хто сподівається на себе, той нерозумний; а хто ходить в мудрості, той буде цілий. | He that trusts to a bold heart, such an one is a fool: but he that walks in wisdom shall be safe. |
|

|
27
|
| Хто дає убогому, не зубожіє; а хто закриває очі свої від нього, на тому багато проклять. | He that gives to the poor shall not be in want: but he that turns away his eye from him shall be in great distress. |
|

|
28
|
| Коли підносяться нечестиві, люди ховаються, а коли вони падають, примножуються праведники. | In the places of ungodly men the righteous mourn: but in their destruction the righteous shall be multiplied. |

| Людина, яка, будучи викритою, озлоблює шию свою, раптово скрушиться, і не буде їй зцілення. | A reprover is better than a stiff-necked man: for when the latter is suddenly set on fire, there shall be no remedy. |
|

|
| Коли примножуються праведники, веселиться народ, а коли панує нечестивий, народ стогне. | When the righteous are praised, the people will rejoice: but when the ungodly rule, men mourn. |
|

|

|
| Чоловік, який любить мудрість, радує батька свого; а хто знається з блудницями, той марнує майно. | When a man loves wisdom, his father rejoices: but he that keeps harlots will waste wealth. |
|

|
4
|
| Цар правосуддям утверджує землю, а хто любить подарунки, розоряє її. | A righteous king establishes a country: but a transgressor destroys it. |
|

|

|
| Чоловік, який лестить другові своєму, розстелює сіті ногам його. | He that prepares a net in the way of his own friend, entangles his own feet in it. |
|

|
| У гріху злої людини — тенета для неї, а праведник веселиться і радіє. | A great snare is spread for a sinner: but the righteous shall be in joy and gladness. |
|

|
| Праведник ретельно вникає у позов бідних, а нечестивий не розглядає справи. | A righteous man knows how to judge for the poor: but the ungodly understands not knowledge; and the poor man has not an understanding mind. |
|

|
| Люди розпусні обурюють місто, а мудрі втихомирюють заколот. | Lawless men burn down a city: but wise men turn away wrath. |
|

|
| Розумна людина, маючи суд з людиною дурною, чи сердиться, чи сміється, — не має спокою. | A wise man shall judge nations: but a worthless man being angry laughs and fears not. |
|

|
| Кровожерливі люди ненавидять непорочного, а праведні піклуються про його життя. | Bloody men hate a holy person, but the upright will seek his soul. |
|

|

|
| Нерозумний весь гнів свій виливає, а мудрий стримує його. | A fool utters all his mind: but the wise reserves his in part. |
|

|

|
| Якщо правитель слухає неправдиві слова, то і всі службовці у нього нечестиві. | When a king hearkens to unjust language, all his subjects are transgressors. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Бідний і лихвар зустрічаються один з одним; але світло очам того й іншого дає Господь. | When the creditor and debtor meet together, the Lord oversees them both. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Якщо цар судить бідних за правдою, то престіл його назавжди утвердиться. | When a king judges the poor in truth, his throne shall be established for a testimony. |
|
15
|
15
|
| Різка і викриття дають мудрість; але отрок, залишений у нехтуванні, чинить сором своїй матері. | Stripes and reproofs give wisdom: but an erring child disgraces his parents. |
|
16
|
16
|
| При примноженні нечестивих збільшується беззаконня; але праведники побачать падіння їх. | When the ungodly abound, sins abound: but when they fall, the righteous are warned. |
|
17
|
17
|
| Карай сина твого, і він дасть тобі спокій, і принесе радість душі твоїй. | Chasten thy son, and he shall give thee rest; and he shall give honour to thy soul. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Без одкровення з висоти народ неприборканий, а хто дотримується закону — блаженний. | There shall be no interpreter to a sinful nation: but he that observes the law is blessed. |
|
19
|
19
|
| Словами не навчиться раб, тому що, хоча він розуміє їх, але не слухається. | A stubborn servant will not be reproved by words: for even if he understand, still he will not obey. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Чи бачив ти чоловіка необачного у словах своїх? на нерозумного більше надії, ніж на нього. | If thou see a man hasty in his words, know that the fool has hope rather than he. |
|

|

|
| Якщо з дитинства виховувати раба у розкоші, то згодом він захоче бути сином. | He that lives wantonly from a child, shall be a servant, and in the end shall grieve over himself. |
|

|
22
|
| Чоловік гнівливий заводить сварку, і запальний багато грішить. | A furious man stirs up strife, and a passionate man digs up sin. |
|

|

|
| Гордість людини принижує її, а смиренний духом здобуває шану. | Pride brings a man low, but the Lord upholds the humble-minded with honour. |
|

|

|
| Хто ділиться зі злодієм, той ненавидить душу свою; чує він прокляття, але не оголошує про те. | He that shares with a thief, hates his own soul: and if any having heard an oath uttered tell not of it, |
|
25
|
25
|
| Острах перед людьми ставить тенета; а хто уповає на Господа, буде у безпеці. | they fearing and reverencing men unreasonably have been overthrown, but he that trusts in the Lord shall rejoice. Ungodliness causes a man to stumble: but he that trusts in his master shall be safe. |
|

|

|
| Багато хто шукає прихильного лиця правителя, але доля людини — від Господа. | Many wait on the favour of rulers; but justice comes to a man from the Lord. |
|
27
|
27
|
| Мерзота для праведників — людина неправедна, і мерзота для нечестивого — хто йде прямим шляхом. | A righteous man is an abomination to an unrighteous man, and the direct way is an abomination to the sinner. |
|

Chapter 31

|
| Слова Агура, сина Іакеєвого. Натхненні слова, які сказав цей чоловік Іфиїлу, Іфиїлу й Укалу: | |

|
| справді, я більший невіглас, ніж будь-хто з людей, і розуму людського немає у мене, | |
|
3
|
|
| і не навчився я мудрости, і пізнання святих не маю. | |
|
4
|
|
| Хто піднімався на небо і сходив? хто зібрав вітер у пригорщі свої? хто зав’язав воду в одяг? хто поставив усі межі землі? яке ім’я йому? і яке ім’я синові його? чи знаєш? | |
|
5
|
|
| Усяке слово Бога чисте; Він — щит тим, хто уповає на Нього. | |
|
6
|
|
| Не додавай до слів Його, щоб Він не викрив тебе, і ти не виявився неправдомовцем. | |
|
7
|
|
| Дві речі я прошу в Тебе, не відмов мені, перше ніж я помру: | |
|
8
|
|
| суєту і неправду віддали від мене, убогости і багатства не давай мені, годуй мене насущним хлібом, | |
|
9
|
|
| щоб, переситившись, я не зрікся Тебе і не сказав: «хто Господь?» і щоб, зубожівши, не став красти і вживати ім’я Бога мого марно. | |
|

|

|
| Не лихослов раба перед господарем його, щоб він не прокляв тебе, і ти не залишився винним. | Who shall find a virtuous woman? for such a one is more valuable than precious stones. |
|

|
11
|
| Є рід, який проклинає батька свого і не благословляє матері своєї. | The heart of her husband trusts in her: such a one shall stand in no need of fine spoils. |
|
12
|
12
|
| Є рід, який чистий в очах своїх, тоді як не омитий від нечистот своїх. | For she employs all her living for her husband's good. |
|
13
|
13
|
| Є рід — о, які зарозумілі очі його, і як підняті вії його! | Gathering wool and flax, she makes it serviceable with her hands. |
|
14
|
14
|
| Є рід, у якого зуби — мечі, і щелепи — ножі, щоб пожирати бідних на землі й убогих між людьми. | She is like a ship trading from a distance: so she procures her livelihood. |
|
15
|
15
|
| У ненаситності дві дочки: «давай, давай!» Ось три невситимих, і чотири, які не скажуть: «достатньо!» | And she rises by night, and gives food to her household, and appointed tasks to her maidens. |
|
16
|
16
|
| Пекло й утроба безплідна, земля, що не насичується водою, і вогонь, що не говорить: «досить!» | She views a farm, and buys it: and with the fruit of her hands she plants a possession. |
|
17
|
17
|
| Око, що насміхається з батька і нехтує покірністю до матері, виклюють ворони дольні, і пожеруть пташенята орлині! | She strongly girds her loins, and strengthens her arms for work. |
|
18
|
18
|
| Три речі незбагненні для мене, і чотирьох я не розумію: | And she finds by experience that working is good; and her candle goes not out all night. |
|

|
19
|
| путі орла на небі, путі змія на скелі, путі корабля серед моря і путі чоловіка до дівчини. | She reaches forth her arms to needful works, and applies her hands to the spindle. |
|
20
|
20
|
| Така путь і дружини перелюбної; поїла й обтерла рот свій, і говорить: «я нічого поганого не зробила». | And she opens her hands to the needy, and reaches out fruit to the poor. |
|

|
21
|
| Від трьох трясеться земля, чотирьох вона не може носити: | Her husband is not anxious about those at home when he tarries anywhere abroad: for all her household are clothed. |
|
22
|
22
|
| раба, коли він стає царем; нерозумного, коли він досита їсть хліб; | She makes for her husband clothes of double texture, and garments for herself of fine linen and scarlet. |
|
23
|
23
|
| ганебну жінку, коли вона виходить заміж, і служницю, коли вона займає місце пані своєї. | And her husband becomes a distinguished person in the gates, when he sits in council with the old inhabitants of the land. |
|
24
|
24
|
| Ось чотири малих на землі, але вони мудріші за мудрих: | She makes fine linens, and sells girdles to the Chananites: she opens her mouth heedfully and with propriety, and controls her tongue. |
|
25
|
25
|
| мурахи — народ несильний, але влітку заготовляють їжу свою; | She puts on strength and honour; and rejoices in the last days. |
|

|
26
|
| гірські миші — народ слабкий, але ставлять доми свої на скелі; | The ways of her household are careful, and she eats not the bread of idleness. |
|
27
|
27
|
| у сарани немає царя, але виступає уся вона струнко; | But she opens her mouth wisely, and according to law. |
|
28
|
28
|
| павук лапками чіпляється, але буває у царських чертогах. | And her kindness to them sets up her children for them, and they grow rich, and her husband praises her. |
|
29
|
29
|
| Ось троє мають струнку ходу, і четверо струнко виступають: | Many daughters have obtained wealth, many have wrought valiantly; but thou hast exceeded, thou hast surpassed all. |
|
30
|
30
|
| лев, силач між звірами, не посторониться ні перед ким; | Charms are false, and woman's beauty is vain: for it is a wise woman that is blessed, and let her praise the fear of the Lord. |
|
31
|
31
|
| кінь і козел, [проводир стада,] і цар серед народу свого. | Give her of the fruit of her lips; and let her husband be praised in the gates. |
|
32
|
|
| Якщо ти у зарозумілості своїй зробив дурість і помислив зле, то поклади руку на вуста; | |
|
33
|
|
| тому що, як збивання молока робить масло, поштовх у ніс викликає кров, так і пробудження гніву чинить сварку. | |
|
Глава 31

|
| Слова Лемуїла царя. Наставляння, які дала йому мати його: | |

|
|
| що, сину мій? що, сину утроби моєї? що, сину обітниць моїх? | |
|
3
|
|
| Не віддавай жінкам сил твоїх, ні шляхів твоїх згубницям царів. | |
|
4
|
|
| Не царям, Лемуїле, не царям пити вино, і не князям — сикеру, | |
|
5
|
|
| щоб, напившись, вони не забули закону і не викривили суду всіх пригноблених. | |
|
6
|
|
| Дайте сикеру тому, хто гине, і вино засмученому душею; | |
|
7
|
|
| нехай він вип’є і забуде бідність свою і не згадає більше про своє страждання. | |
|
8
|
|
| Відкривай уста твої за безмовного і для захисту всіх сиріт. | |
|
9
|
|
| Відкривай уста твої для правосуддя і для справи бідного й убогого. | |
|

|
| Хто знайде доброчесну дружину? ціна її вища за перли; | |

| упевнене у ній серце чоловіка її, і він не залишиться без прибутку; | |

| вона відплачує йому добром, а не злом, в усі дні життя свого. | |

|
| Добуває вовну і льон, і з охотою працює своїми руками. | |

|
| Вона, як купецькі кораблі, здалеку добуває хліб свій. | |

|
| Вона встає ще вночі і роздає їжу в домі своєму і визначає денну працю служницям своїм. | |
|

|
|
| Задумає вона про поле, і придбає його; від плодів рук своїх насаджує виноградник. | |
|

|
|
| Підперезує силою стегна свої і зміцнює м’язи свої. | |
|
18
|
|
| Вона відчуває, що заняття її добре, і — світильник її не гасне і вночі. | |
|
19
|
|
| Простягає руки свої до прядки, і персти її беруться за веретено. | |
|
20
|
|
| Долоню свою вона відкриває бідному, і руку свою подає нужденному. | |
|

|
|
| Не боїться холоду для родини своєї, тому що вся родина її одягнена у подвійний одяг. | |
|

|
|
| Вона робить собі килими; висон і пурпур — одяг її. | |
|
23
|
|
| Чоловік її відомий біля воріт, коли сидить зі старійшинами землі. | |
|
24
|
|
| Вона робить покривала і продає, і пояси доставляє купцям фінікійським. | |
|
25
|
|
| Сила і краса — одяг її, і весело дивиться вона на майбутнє. | |
|
26
|
|
| Вуста свої відкриває з мудрістю, і лагідне наставляння на язиці її. | |
|
27
|
|
| Вона спостерігає за господарством у домі своєму і не їсть хліба неробства. | |

28
|
|
| Встають діти й ублажають її, — чоловік, і хвалить її: | |
|
29
|
|
| «багато було дружин доброчесних, але ти перевершила всіх їх». | |
|
30

|
| Миловидість оманлива і краса суєтна; але дружина, яка боїться Господа, гідна похвали. | |
|
31
|
|
| Дайте їй від плоду рук її, і нехай прославлять її біля воріт діла її! |
