Глава 17	Chapter 17

1	1
Филистимляни зібрали війська свої для війни і зібралися в Сокхофі, що в Юдеї, і розташувалися станом між Сокхофом і Азеком в Ефес-Даммимі.	And the Philistines gather their armies to battle, and gather themselves to Socchoth of Judæa, and encamp between Socchoth and Azeca Ephermen.

А Саул та ізраїльтяни зібралися і розташувалися станом у долині дуба і приготувалися до війни проти филистимлян.	And Saul and the men of Israel gather together, and they encamp in the valley, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3	3
І стали филистимляни на горі з одного боку, й ізраїльтяни на горі з іншого боку, а між ними була долина.	And the Philistines stand on the mountain on one side, and Israel stands on the mountain on the other side, and the valley was between them.

І виступив зі стану филистимського єдиноборець, на ім’я Голіаф, з Гефа; на зріст він — шести ліктів і п’яді.	And there went forth a mighty man out of the army of the Philistines, Goliath by name, out of Geth, his height was four cubits and a span.

Мідний шолом на голові його; і одягнений він був у лускату броню, і вага броні його — п’ять тисяч сиклів міді;	And he had a helmet upon his head, and he wore a breastplate of chain armour; and the weight of his breastplate was five thousand shekels of brass and iron.

мідні наколінники на ногах його, і мідний щит за плечима його;	And greaves of brass were upon his legs, and a brazen target was between his shoulders.

і древко списа його, як валок у ткачів; а сам спис його в шістсот сиклів заліза, і перед ним ішов зброєносець.	And the staff of his spear was like a weavers' beam, and the spear's head was formed of six hundred shekels of iron; and his armour-bearer went before him.
8	8
І став він і кричав до полків ізраїльських, говорячи їм: навіщо вийшли ви воювати? Чи не филистимлянин я, а ви раби Саулові? Виберіть у себе людину, і нехай зійде до мене;	And he stood and cried to the army of Israel, and said to them, Why are ye come forth to set yourselves in battle array against us? Am not I a Philistine, and ye Hebrews of Saul? choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me.

якщо він може битися зі мною й уб’є мене, то ми будемо вашими рабами; якщо ж я здолаю його й уб’ю його, то ви будете нашими рабами і будете служити нам.	And if he shall be able to fight against me, and shall smite me, then will we be your servants: but if I should prevail and smite him, ye shall be our servants, and serve us.

І сказав филистимлянин: сьогодні я посоромлю полки ізраїльські; дайте мені людину, і ми будемо битися вдвох.	And the Philistine said, Behold, I have defied the armies of Israel this very day: give me a man, and we will both of us fight in single combat.

І почули Саул і всі ізраїльтяни ці слова филистимлянина, і дуже злякалися і жахнулися.	And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed, and greatly terrified.
12	12
Давид же був сином ефрафянина з Вифлеєма Іудиного, на ім’я Ієссей, у якого було вісім синів. Цей чоловік у дні Саула досяг старости і був старшим між мужами.	And David son of an Ephrathite said, this Ephrathite was of Bethleem Juda, and his name was Jessae, and he had eight sons. And the man passed for an old man among men in the days of Saul.
13	13
Три старших сини Ієссея пішли із Саулом на війну; імена трьох синів його, які пішли на війну: старший — Елиав, другий за ним — Аминадав, і третій — Самма;	And the three elder sons of Jessae went and followed Saul to the war, and the names of his sons that went to the war were, Eliab his ﬁrst-born, and his second Aminadab, and his third son Samma.

Давид же був менший. Троє старших пішли із Саулом,	And David himself was the younger son, and the three elder followed Saul.
15	15
а Давид повернувся від Саула, щоб пасти овець батька свого у Вифлеємі.	And David departed and returned from Saul, to feed his father’s sheep in Bethleem;
16	16
І виступав филистимлянин той вранці і ввечері і виставляв себе сорок днів.	And the Philistine advanced morning and evening, and stood up forty days.
17	17
І сказав Ієссей Давиду, синові своєму: візьми для братів своїх ефу сушених зерен і десять цих хлібів і віднеси скоріше в стан до твоїх братів;	And Jessae said to David, Take now to thy brethren an ephah of this meal, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp and give them to thy brothers.
18	18
а ці десять сирів віднеси тисячоначальнику і дізнайся про здоров’я братів і довідайся про потреби їхні.	And thou shalt carry to the captain of the thousand these ten cheeses of milk, and thou shalt see how thy brethren fare, and learn what they want.
19	19
Саул і вони і всі ізраїльтяни знаходилися в долині дуба і готувалися до битви з филистимлянами.	And Saul himself and all the men of Israel were in the valley of the Oak, warring with the Philistines.
20	20
І встав Давид рано-вранці, і доручив овець сторожеві, і, взявши ношу, пішов, як наказав йому Ієссей, і прийшов до обозу, коли військо було виведене у стрій і з криком готувалося до битви.	And David rose early in the morning, and left the sheep to a keeper, and took and went as Jessae commanded him, and he came to the trench and to the army as it was going out to ﬁght, and they shouted for the battle.
21	21
І розташували ізраїльтяни і филистимляни стрій навпроти строю.	And Israel and the Philistines formed their lines one opposite the other.
22	22
Давид залишив свою ношу обозному сторожеві і побіг у ряди і, прийшовши, запитав братів своїх про здоров’я.	And David deposited his burden in the hand of a keeper, and ran to the line, and went and asked his brethren how they Were.
23	23
І ось, коли він розмовляв з ними, єдиноборець, на ім’я Голіаф, филистимлянин з Гефа, виступає з рядів филистимських і говорить ті слова, і Давид почув їх.	And while he was speaking with them, behold the Amessaean advanced, Goliath by name, the Philistine of Geth, of the armies of the Philistines, and he spoke as before, and David heard.
24	24
І всі ізраїльтяни, побачивши цього чоловіка, тікали від нього і дуже боялися.	And all the men of Israel when they saw the man ﬂed from before him, and they were greatly terrified.
25	25
І говорили ізраїльтяни: бачите цю людину, що виступає? Він виступає, щоб ганьбити Ізраїль. Якби хто убив його, обдарував би того цар великим багатством, і дочку свою видав би за нього, і дім батька його зробив би вільним в Ізраїлі.	And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that comes up? for he has reproached Israel and has come up; and it shall be that the man who shall smite him, the king shall enrich him with great wealth and shall give him his daughter, and shall make his father’s house free in Israel.

І сказав Давид людям, що стояли з ним: що зроблять тому, хто уб’є цього филистимлянина і зніме ганьблення з Ізраїля? бо хто цей необрізаний филистимлянин, що так ганьбить воїнство Бога живого?	and David spoke to the men who stood with him saying, Shall it indeed be done thus to the man who shall smite that Philistine, and take away reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he has defied the army of the living God?

І сказав йому народ ті самі слова, говорячи: ось що зроблено буде тій людині, яка уб’є його.	And the people spoke to him according to this Word, saying Thus shall it be done to the man Who shall smite him.
28	28
І почув Елиав, старший брат Давида, як говорив він з людьми, і розсердився Елиав на Давида і сказав: навіщо ти сюди прийшов і на кого залишив небагатьох овець тих у пустелі? Я знаю зарозумілість твою і дурне серце твоє, ти прийшов подивитися на битву.	And Eliab his elder brother heard as he spoke to the men, and Eliab was very angry with David and said, Why hast thou thus come down, and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thine heart, for thou art come down to see the battle.

І сказав Давид: що ж я зробив? чи не слова це?	And David said what have I done now? Have I no business here?
30	30
І відвернувся від нього до іншого і говорив ті самі слова, і відповідав йому народ як і раніше.	And he turned from him towards another, and he spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him after the former manner.
31	31
І почули слова, які говорив Давид, і переказали Саулу, і той покликав його.	And the Words which David spoke were heard and were reported to Saul. And he took him to himself.

І сказав Давид Саулу: нехай ніхто не падає духом через нього; раб твій піде і битиметься з цим филистимлянином.	And David said to Saul, Let not, I pray thee, the heart of my lord be dejected within him: thy servant will go, and fight with this Philistine.
33	33
І сказав Саул Давиду: не можеш ти йти проти цього филистимлянина, щоб битися з ним, тому що ти ще юнак, а він воїн від юности своєї.	And Saul said to David, Thou wilt not in anywise be able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for thou art a mere youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

І сказав Давид Саулу: раб твій пас овець у батька свого, і коли, бувало, приходив лев або ведмідь і ніс вівцю з отари,	And David said to Saul, Thy servant was tending the flock for his father; and when a lion came and a she-bear, and took a sheep out of the flock,
35	35
то я гнався за ним і нападав на нього і віднімав з пащі його; а якщо він кидався на мене, то я брав його за гриву й уражав його й умертвляв його;	then I went forth after him, and smote him, and drew the spoil out of his mouth: and as he rose up against me, then I caught hold of his throat, and smote him, and slew him.

і лева і ведмедя убивав раб твій, і з цим филистимлянином необрізаним буде те саме, що з ними, тому що так ганьбить воїнство Бога живого. [Чи не піти мені й уразити його, щоб зняти ганьблення з Ізраїля? Бо хто цей необрізаний?]	Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear, and the uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them: shall I not go and smite him, and remove this day a reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised one, who has defied the army of the living God?
37	37
І сказав Давид: Господь, Який спасав мене від лева і ведмедя, визволить мене і від руки цього филистимлянина. І сказав Саул Давиду: йди, і нехай буде Господь з тобою.	The Lord who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this uncircumcised Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and the Lord shall be with thee.
38	38
І вдяг Саул Давида у свій одяг, і поклав на голову його мідний шолом, і надяг на нього броню.	And Saul clothed David with a military coat, and put his brazen helmet on his head.
39	39
І оперезався Давид мечем його поверх одягу і почав ходити, тому що не звик до такого озброєння; потім сказав Давид Саулу: я не можу ходити в цьому, я не звик. І зняв Давид усе це із себе.	And he girt David with his sword over his coat: and he made trial walking with them once and again: and David said to Saul, I shall not be able to go with these, for I have not proved them: so they remove them from him.

І взяв посох свій у руку свою, і вибрав собі п’ять гладеньких каменів зі струмка, і поклав їх у пастушу сумку, що була з ним; і з сумкою і з пращею в руці своїй виступив проти филистимлянина.	And he took his staff in his hand, and he chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd's scrip which he had for his store, and his sling was in his hand; and he approached the Philistine.

Виступив і филистимлянин, ідучи і наближаючись до Давида, і зброєносець ішов попереду нього.
42	42
І глянув филистимлянин і, побачивши Давида, із презирством подивився на нього, тому що він був молодий, білявий і красивий лицем.	And Goliath saw David, and despised him; for he was a lad, and ruddy, with a fair countenance.
43	43
І сказав филистимлянин Давиду: що ти йдеш на мене з палкою [і з камінням]? хіба я собака? [І сказав Давид: ні, але гірше собаки.] І прокляв филистимлянин Давида своїми богами.	And the Philistine said to David, Am I as a dog, that thou comest against me with a staff and stones? and David said, Nay, but worse than a dog. And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44	44
І сказав филистимлянин Давиду: підійди до мене, і я віддам тіло твоє птахам небесним і звірам польовим.	And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the birds of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.
45	45
А Давид відповів филистимлянину: ти йдеш проти мене з мечем і списом і щитом, а я йду проти тебе в ім’я Господа Саваофа, Бога воїнств ізраїльських, які ти ганьбив;	And David said to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with sword, and with spear, and with shield; but I come to thee in the name of the Lord God of hosts of the army of Israel, which thou hast defied
46	46
нині віддасть тебе Господь у руки мої, і я уб’ю тебе, і зніму з тебе голову твою, і віддам [труп твій і] трупи війська филистимського птахам небесним і звірам земним, і дізнається вся земля, що є Бог в Ізраїлі;	this day. And the Lord shall deliver thee this day into my hand; and I will slay thee, and take away thy head from off thee, and will give thy limbs and the limbs of the army of the Philistines this day to the birds of the sky, and to the wild beasts of the earth; and all the earth shall know that there is a God in Israel.
47	47
і дізнається все це зібрання, що не мечем і списом спасає Господь, бо це війна Господа, і Він віддасть вас у руки наші.	And all this assembly shall know that the Lord delivers not by sword or spear, for the battle is the Lord's, and the Lord will deliver you into our hands.

Коли филистимлянин піднявся і став підходити і наближатися назустріч Давиду, Давид поспішно побіг до строю назустріч филистимлянину.	And the Philistine arose and went to meet David.
49	49
І опустив Давид руку свою в сумку і взяв звідти камінь, і кинув із пращі і вразив филистимлянина в чоло, так що камінь встромився в чоло його, і він упав лицем на землю.	And David stretched out his hand to his scrip, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine on his forehead, and the stone penetrated through the helmet into his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the ground.

Так здолав Давид филистимлянина пращею і каменем, і вразив филистимлянина й убив його; меча ж не було в руках Давида.
51	51
Тоді Давид підбіг, наступивши на филистимлянина, узяв меч його і вийняв його з піхов, ударив його і відтяв ним голову його; филистимляни, побачивши, що силач їхній помер, побігли.	And David ran, and stood upon him, and took his sword, and slew him, and cut off his head: and the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, and they fled.
52	52
І піднялися чоловіки ізраїльські та юдейські, і викликнули і гнали филистимлян до входу в долину і до воріт Аккарона. І падали уражені филистимляни по дорозі Шааримській до Гефа, і до Аккарона.	And the men of Israel and Juda arose, and shouted and pursued them as far as the entrance to Geth, and as far as the gate of Ascalon: and the slain men of the Philistines fell in the way of the gates, both to Geth, and to Accaron.

І повернулися сини Ізраїлеві з погоні за филистимлянами і розграбували стан їх.	And the men of Israel returned from pursuing after the Philistines, and they destroyed their camp.
54	54
І взяв Давид голову филистимлянина і відніс її в Єрусалим, а зброю його поклав у наметі своєму.	And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55
Коли Саул побачив Давида, який виходив проти филистимлянина, то сказав Авениру, начальникові війська: Авенире, чий син цей юнак? Авенир сказав: нехай живе душа твоя, царю; я не знаю.

І сказав цар: так запитай, чий син цей юнак?
57
Коли ж Давид повертався після поразки филистимлянина, то Авенир узяв його і привів до Саула, і голова филистимлянина була в руці його.
58
І запитав його Саул: чий ти син, юначе? І відповідав Давид: син раба твого Ієссея з Вифлеєма.
