| І сповістили Давида, говорячи: ось, филистимляни напали на Кеїль і грабують токи. | And it was told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines war in Keila, and they rob, they trample on the threshing-floors. |

| І запитав Давид Господа, говорячи: чи йти мені, і чи подолаю я цих филистимлян? І відповів Господь Давиду: йди, ти подолаєш филистимлян і врятуєш Кеїль. | And David enquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the Lord said, Go, and thou shalt smite these Philistines, and shalt save Keila. |

| Але ті, що були з Давидом сказали йому: ось, ми боїмося тут в Юдеї, як же нам іти в Кеїль проти ополчень филистимських? [ми потрапимо в полон до филистимлян.] | And the men of David said to him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judea; and how shall it be if we go to Keila? shall we go after the spoils of the Philistines? |

| Тоді знову запитав Давид Господа, і відповів йому Господь і сказав: встань і йди в Кеїль, тому що Я віддав филистимлян у руки твої. | And David enquired yet again of the Lord; and the Lord answered him, and said to him, Arise and go down to Keila, for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hands. |

| І пішов Давид з людьми своїми в Кеїль, і воював з филистимлянами, і забрав худобу їхню, і наніс їм велику поразку, і врятував Давид жителів Кеїля. | So David and his men with him went to Keila, and fought with the Philistines; and they fled from before him, and he carried off their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter, and David rescued the inhabitants of Keila. |

| Коли Авиафар, син Ахимелеха, прибіг до Давида [і пішов з ним] у Кеїль, то приніс із собою й ефод. | And it came to pass when Abiathar the son of Achimelech fled to David, that he went down with David to Keila, having an ephod in his hand. |

| І донесли Саулу, що Давид прийшов у Кеїль, і Саул сказав: Бог віддав його в руки мої, бо він замкнув себе, ввійшовши в місто з воротами і запорами. | And it was told Saul that David was come to Keila: and Saul said, God has sold him into my hands, for he is shut up, having entered into a city that has gates and bars. |

| І скликав Саул весь народ на війну, щоб іти до Кеїля, обложити Давида і людей його. | And Saul charged all the people to go down to war to Keila, to besiege David and his men. |

| Коли дізнався Давид, що Саул задумав проти нього зле, сказав священикові Авиафару: принеси ефод [Господній]. | And David knew that Saul spoke openly of mischief against him: and David said to Abiathar the priest, Bring the ephod of the Lord. |
|

| І сказав Давид: Господи Боже Ізраїлів! раб Твій почув, що Саул хоче прийти в Кеїль, зруйнувати місто заради мене. | And David said, Lord God of Israel, thy servant has indeed heard, that Saul seeks to come against Keila to destroy the city on my account. |

| Чи віддадуть мене жителі Кеїля в руки його? І чи прийде сюди Саул, як чув раб Твій? Господи Боже Ізраїлів! відкрий рабові Твоєму. І сказав Господь: прийде. | Will the place be shut up? and now will Saul come down, as thy servant has heard? Lord God of Israel, tell thy servant. And the Lord said, It will be shut up. |

| І сказав Давид: чи видадуть жителі Кеїля мене і людей моїх у руки Саула? І сказав Господь: видадуть. | |

| Тоді піднявся Давид і люди його, близько шестисот чоловік, і вийшли з Кеїля і ходили, де могли. Саулу ж було донесено, що Давид утік з Кеїля, і тоді він відмінив похід. | And David arose, and the men with him, in number about four hundred, and they went forth from Keila, and went whithersoever they could go: and it was told Saul that David had escaped from Keila, and he forbore to come. |

| Давид же перебував у пустелі в неприступних місцях і потім на горі в пустелі Зиф. Саул шукав його кожного дня; але Бог не віддав Давида в руки його. | And he dwelt in Maserem in the wilderness, in the narrow passes; and dwelt in the wilderness in mount Ziph, in the dry country. And Saul sought him continually, but the Lord delivered him not into his hands. |

| І бачив Давид, що Саул вийшов шукати душу його; Давид же був у пустелі Зиф у лісі. | And David perceived that Saul went forth to seek David; and David was in the dry mountain in the New Ziph. |

| І встав Іонафан, син Саула, і прийшов до Давида в ліс, і зміцнив його упованням на Бога, | And Jonathan son of Saul rose, and went to David to Cæne, and strengthened his hands in the Lord. |
|

| і сказав йому: не бійся, бо не знайде тебе рука батька мого Саула, і ти будеш царювати над Ізраїлем, а я буду другим після тебе; і Саул, батько мій, знає це. | And he said to him, Fear not, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be second to thee; and Saul my father knows it. |

| І уклали вони між собою завіт перед лицем Господа; і Давид залишився в лісі, а Іонафан пішов у дім свій. | So they both made a covenant before the Lord; and David dwelt in Cæne, and Jonathan went to his home. |
|

| І прийшли зифеї до Саула в Гиву, говорячи: ось, Давид ховається в нас у неприступних місцях, у лісі, на пагорбі Гахила, що праворуч від Ієсимона; | And the Ziphites came up out of the dry country to Saul to the hill, saying, Behold, is not David hidden with us in Messara, in the narrows in Cæne in the hill of Echela, which is on the right of Jessæmon? |

| отже, за бажанням душі твоєї, царю, йди; а наша справа буде видати його в руки царя. | And now according to all the king's desire to come down, let him come down to us; they have shut him up into the hands of the king. |

| І сказав їм Саул: благословенні ви в Господа за те, що пожаліли про мене; | And Saul said to them, Blessed be ye of the Lord, for ye have been grieved on my account. |
|

|
| йдіть, упевніться ще, розвідайте і виглядіть місце його, де буде нога його, і хто бачив його там, бо мені говорять, що він дуже хитрий; | Go, I pray you, and make preparations yet, and notice his place where his foot shall be, quickly, in that place which ye spoke of, lest by any means he should deal craftily. |

| і виглядіть, і розвідайте про всі схованки, в яких він ховається, і поверніться до мене з вірною звісткою, і я піду з вами; і якщо він у цій землі, я буду шукати його у всіх тисячах Іудиних. | Take notice, then, and learn, and I will go with you; and it shall come to pass that if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Juda. |

| І встали вони і пішли в Зиф раніше Саула. Давид же і люди його були в пустелі Маон, на рівнині, праворуч від Ієсимона. | And the Ziphites arose, and went before Saul: and David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, westward, to the right of Jessæmon. |

| І пішов Саул з людьми своїми шукати його. Але Давида сповістили про це, і він перейшов до скелі і залишався в пустелі Маон. І почув Саул, і погнався за Давидом у пустелю Маон. | And Saul and his men went to seek him: and they brought word to David, and he went down to the rock that was in the wilderness of Maon: and Saul heard, and followed after David to the wilderness of Maon. |

| І йшов Саул з одного боку гори, а Давид з людьми своїми був на іншому боці гори. І коли Давид поспішав утекти від Саула, а Саул з людьми своїми йшов в обхід Давида і людей його, щоб захопити їх; | And Saul and his men go on one side of the mountain, and David and his men are on the other side of the mountain: and David was hiding himself to escape from Saul: and Saul and his men encamped against David and his men, in order to take them. |

| тоді прийшов до Саула вісник, говорячи: поспішай і приходь, бо филистимляни напали на землю. | And there came a messenger to Saul, saying, Haste thee, and come hither, for the Philistines have invaded the land. |
|

| І повернувся Саул від переслідування Давида і пішов назустріч филистимлянам; тому і назвали це місце: Села-Гаммахлекоф*. | So Saul returned from following after David, and went to meet the Philistines: therefore that place was called The divided Rock. |
