| Валтасар цар зробив великий бенкет для тисячі вельмож своїх і перед очима тисячі пив вино. | Baltasar the king made a great supper for his thousand nobles, and there was wine before the thousand. |

| Скуштувавши вина, Валтасар наказав принести золоті і срібні сосуди, які Навуходоносор, батько його, виніс із храму Єрусалимського, щоб пити з них царю, вельможам його, дружинам його і наложницям його. | And Baltasar drinking gave orders as he tasted the wine that they should bring the gold and silver vessels, which Nabuchodonosor his father had brought forth from the temple in Jerusalem; that the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, should drink out of them. |

| Тоді принесли золоті сосуди, які взяті були зі святилища дому Божого в Єрусалимі; і пили з них цар і вельможі його, дружини його і наложниці його. | So the gold and silver vessels were brought which Nabuchodonosor had taken out of the temple of God in Jerusalem; and the king, and his nobles, and his mistresses, and his concubines, drank out of them. |

| Пили вино, і славили богів золотих і срібних, мідних, залізних, дерев’яних і кам’яних. | They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, and of brass, and of iron, and of wood, and of stone. |

| У ту саму годину вийшли пальці руки людської і писали навпроти лампади на вапні стіни чертогу царського, і цар бачив кисть руки, яка писала. | In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote in front of the lamp on the plaster of the wall of the king's house: and the king saw the knuckles of the hand that wrote. |

| Тоді цар змінився у лиці своєму; думки його збентежили його, зв’язки стегон його ослабли, і коліна його стали битися одне об одне. | Then the king's countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, and the joints of his loins were loosed, and his knees smote one another. |
|

|
| Сильно закричав цар, щоб привели чаклунів, халдеїв і ворожбитів. Цар почав говорити, і сказав мудрецям вавилонським: хто прочитає це написане і пояснить мені значення його, той буде вбраний у багряницю, і золотий ланцюг буде на шиї у нього, і третім володарем буде у царстві. | And the king cried aloud to bring in the magicians, Chaldeans, and soothsayers; and he said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and make known to me the interpretation, shall be clothed with scarlet, and there shall be a golden chain upon his neck, and he shall be the third ruler in my kingdom. |

| І ввійшли всі мудреці царя, але не могли прочитати написаного і пояснити цареві значення його. | Then came in all the king's wise men: but they could not read the writing, nor make known the interpretation to the king. |

| Цар Валтасар надзвичайно стривожився, і вигляд лиця його змінився на ньому, і вельможі його збентежилися. | And king Baltasar was troubled, and his countenance changed upon him, and his nobles were troubled with him. |
|

|
| Цариця ж, з приводу слів царя і вельмож його, ввійшла у палату бенкету; почала говорити цариця і сказала: царю, повіки живи! нехай не бентежать тебе думки твої, і нехай не змінюється вигляд лиця твого! | Then the queen came into the banquet house, and said, O king, live for ever: let not thy thoughts trouble thee, and let not thy countenance be changed. |

| Є в царстві твоєму муж, в якому дух святого Бога; у дні батька твого виявлені були у ньому світло, розум і мудрість, подібна до мудрости богів, і цар Навуходоносор, батько твій, поставив його главою тайновідців, чаклунів, халдеїв і ворожбитів, — сам батько твій, цар, | There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the Spirit of God; and in the days of thy father watchfulness and understanding were found in him; and king Nabuchodonosor thy father made him chief of the enchanters, magicians, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. |

| тому що у ньому, у Даниїлі, якого цар перейменував Валтасаром, виявилися високий дух, відання і розум, здатний пояснювати сни, тлумачити загадкове і розв’язувати вузли. Отже, нехай прикличуть Даниїла, і він пояснить значення. | For there is an excellent spirit in him, and sense and understanding are in him, interpreting dreams as he does, and answering hard questions, and solving difficulties: it is Daniel, and the king gave him the name of Baltasar: now then let him be called, and he shall tell thee the interpretation of the writing. |

| Тоді введений був Даниїл до царя, і цар почав розмову і сказав Даниїлові: чи ти Даниїл, один з полонених синів юдейських, яких батько мій, цар, привів з Юдеї? | Then Daniel was brought in before the king: and the king said to Daniel, Art thou Daniel, of the children of the captivity of Judea, which the king my father brought? |

| Я чув про тебе, що дух Божий у тобі і світло, і розум, і висока мудрість знайдена у тобі. | I have heard concerning thee, that the Spirit of God is in thee, and that watchfulness and understanding and excellent wisdom have been found in thee. |
|

|
| Ось, приведені були до мене мудреці й чаклуни, щоб прочитати це написане і пояснити мені значення його; але вони не могли пояснити мені цього. | And now the wise men, magicians, and soothsayers have come in before me, to read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation: but they could not tell it me. |
|

| А про тебе я чув, що ти можеш пояснювати значення і розв’язувати вузли; отже, якщо можеш прочитати це написане і пояснити мені значення його, то вбраний будеш у багряницю, і золотий ланцюг буде на шиї твоїй, і третім володарем будеш у царстві. | And I have heard concerning thee, that thou art able to make interpretations: now then if thou shalt be able to read the writing, and to make known to me the interpretation of it, thou shalt be clothed with purple, and there shall be a golden chain upon thy neck, and thou shalt be third ruler in my kingdom. |

| Тоді відповів Даниїл, і сказав цареві: дари твої нехай залишаться у тебе, і почесті віддай іншому; а написане я прочитаю цареві і значення поясню йому. | And Daniel said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give the present of thine house to another; but I will read the writing, and will make known to thee the interpretation of it. |

| Царю! Всевишній Бог дарував батькові твоєму Навуходоносору царство, велич, честь і славу. | O king, the most high God gave to thy father Nabuchodonosor a kingdom, and majesty, and honour, and glory: |
|

| Перед величчю, яку Він дав йому, всі народи, племена і мови тремтіли і страшилися його: кого хотів, він убивав, і кого хотів, залишав у живих; кого хотів, підносив, і кого хотів, принижував. | and by reason of the majesty which he gave to him, all nations, tribes and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he smote; and whom he would he exalted; and whom he would he abased. |

| Але коли серце його загордилося і дух його озлобився до зухвалости, він був скинутий з царського престолу свого і позбавлений слави своєї, | But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was emboldened to act proudly, he was deposed from his royal throne, and his honour was taken from him. |
|

|
| і відлучений був від синів людських, і серце його уподібнилося до звіриного, і жив він з дикими ослами; годували його травою, як вола, і тіло його зрошувалося небесною росою, доки він пізнав, що над царством людським володарює Всевишній Бог і поставляє над ним, кого хоче. | And he was driven forth from men; and his heart was given him after the nature of wild beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses; and they fed him with grass as an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the most high God is Lord of the kingdom of men, and will give it to whomsoever he shall please. |

| І ти, син його Валтасар, не смирив серця твого, хоч знав усе це, | And thou accordingly, his son, O Baltasar, hast not humbled thine heart before God: knowest thou not all this? |
|

|
| але піднісся проти Господа небес, і сосуди дому Його принесли до тебе, і ти і вельможі твої, дружини твої і наложниці твої пили з них вино, і ти славив богів срібних і золотих, мідних, залізних, дерев’яних і кам’яних, які не бачать, не чують, не розуміють; а Бога, у руці Якого дихання твоє і в Якого всі путі твої, ти не прославив. | And thou hast been exalted against the Lord God of heaven; and they have brought before thee the vessels of his house, and thou, and thy nobles, and thy mistresses, and thy concubines, have drunk wine out of them; and thou hast praised the gods of gold, and silver, and brass, and iron, and wood, and stone, which see not, and which hear not, and know not: and the God in whose hand are thy breath and all thy ways hast thou not glorified. |

| За це і послана від Нього кисть руки, і накреслено це писання. | Therefore from his presence has been sent forth the knuckle of a hand; and he has ordered this writing. |
|

| І ось що накреслено: мене, мене, текел, упарсин. | And this is the ordered writing, Mane, Thekel, Phares. |
|

|
| Ось і значення слів: мене — обчислив Бог царство твоє і поклав кінець йому; | This is the interpretation of the sentence: Mane; God has measured thy kingdom, and finished it. |
|

|
| текел — ти зважений на терезах і знайдений дуже легким; | Thekel; it has been weighed in the balance, and found wanting. |
|

|
| перес — розділене царство твоє і дане мидянам і персам. | Phares; thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. |
|

|
| Тоді за повелінням Валтасара одягли Даниїла у багряницю і поклали золотий ланцюг на шию його, і проголосили його третім володарем у царстві. | Then Baltasar commanded, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put the golden chain about his neck, and proclaimed concerning him that he was the third ruler in the kingdom. |

|
| У ту ж саму ніч Валтасар, цар Халдейський, був убитий, | In the same night was Baltasar the Chaldean king slain. |
|

|
|
| і Дарій мидянин прийняв царство, будучи шістдесяти двох років. |
