| Сказав я у серці моєму: «дай, випробую я тебе веселощами, і насолодися добром»; але і це — суєта! | I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth, and behold thou good: and, behold, this is also vanity. |

| Про сміх сказав я: «дурість!», а про веселощі: «що вони роблять?» | I said to laughter, Madness: and to mirth, Why doest thou this? |

| Надумав я у серці моєму насолоджувати вином тіло моє і, тим часом, як серце моє керувалося мудрістю, дотримуватися і глупоти, доки не побачу, що добре для синів людських, що повинні вони були б робити під небом у недовгі дні життя свого. | And I examined whether my heart would excite my flesh as with wine, (though my heart guided me in wisdom,) and I desired to lay hold of mirth, until I should see of what kind is the good to the sons of men, which they should do under the sun all the days of their life. |

| Я почав великі справи: побудував собі доми, посадив собі виноградники, | I enlarged my work; I built me houses; I planted me vineyards. |

| влаштував собі сади і гаї і насадив у них усякі плодючі дерева; | I made me gardens and orchards, and planted in them every kind of fruit-tree. |
|

|
| зробив собі водойми для зрошення з них гаїв, що вирощують дерева; | I made me pools of water, to water from them the timber-bearing wood. |

|
| придбав собі слуг і служниць, і домочадці були у мене; також великої і дрібної худоби було у мене більше, ніж у всіх, що були раніше за мене у Єрусалимі; | I got servants and maidens, and servants were born to me in the house: also I had abundant possession of flocks and herds, beyond all who were before me in Jerusalem. |

| зібрав собі срібла і золота і коштовностей від царів і областей; завів у себе співців і співачок і насолоду синів людських — різні музичні інструменти. | Moreover I collected for myself both silver and gold also, and the peculiar treasures of kings and provinces: I procured me singing men and singing women, and delights of the sons of men, a butler and female cupbearers. |

| І зробився я великим і багатим більше за всіх, що були раніше за мене у Єрусалимі; і мудрість моя була зі мною. | So I became great, and advanced beyond all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom was established to me. |

| Чого б очі мої не побажали, я не відмовляв їм, не забороняв серцю моєму ніяких веселощів, тому що серце моє раділо в усіх трудах моїх, і це було моєю часткою від усіх трудів моїх. | And whatever mine eyes desired, I withheld not from them, I withheld not my heart from all my mirth: for my heart rejoiced in all my labour; and this was my portion of all my labour. |

| І оглянувся я на всі діла мої, які зробили руки мої, і на працю, якою трудився я, виконуючи їх: і ось, усе — суєта і томління духу, і немає від них користи під сонцем! | And I looked on all my works which my hands had wrought, and on my labour which I laboured to perform: and, behold, all was vanity and waywardness of spirit, and there is no advantage under the sun. |

| І звернувся я, щоб глянути на мудрість і безумство і глупоту: бо що може зробити людина після царя понад те, що вже зроблено? | Then I looked on to see wisdom, and madness, and folly: for who is the man who will follow after counsel, in all things wherein he employs it? |

| І побачив я, що перевага мудрости над глупотою така сама, як перевага світла над темрявою: | And I saw that wisdom excels folly, as much as light excels darkness. |
|

| у мудрого очі його — в голові його, а нерозумний ходить у темряві; але дізнався я, що одна доля осягає їх усіх. | The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walks in darkness: and I perceived, even I, that one event shall happen to them all. |
|

| І сказав я у серці моєму: «і мене осягне та сама доля, як і нерозумного: для чого ж я зробився дуже мудрим?» І сказав я у серці моєму, що і це — суєта; | And I said in my heart, As the event of the fool is, so shall it be to me, even to me; and to what purpose have I gained wisdom? I said moreover in my heart, This is also vanity, because the fool speaks of his abundance. |

| тому що мудрого не будуть пам’ятати вічно, як і нерозумного; у грядущі дні все буде забуто, і на жаль! мудрий помирає нарівні з нерозумним. | For there is no remembrance of the wise man with the fool for ever; forasmuch as now in the coming days all things are forgotten: and how shall the wise man die with the fool? |

| І зненавидів я життя, тому що противні стали мені діла, які робляться під сонцем; тому що все — суєта і томління духу! | So I hated life; because the work that was wrought under the sun was evil before me: for all is vanity and waywardness of spirit. |

| І зненавидів я весь труд мій, яким трудився під сонцем, тому що повинен залишити його людині, яка буде після мене. | And I hated the whole of my labour which I took under the sun; because I must leave it to the man who will come after me. |
|

| І хто знає: чи мудра буде вона, чи нерозумна. А вона буде розпоряджатися всіма трудами моїми, якими я трудився і якими показав себе мудрим під сонцем. І це — суєта! | And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? and whether he will have power over all my labour in which I laboured, and wherein I grew wise under the sun? this is also vanity. |

| І звернувся я, щоб навіяти серцю моєму зректися усіх трудів, якими я трудився під сонцем, | So I went about to dismiss from my heart all my labour wherein I had laboured under the sun. |

| тому що одна людина трудиться мудро, зі знанням і успіхом, і повинна віддати все людині, яка не трудилася в тому, що є ніби частиною її. І це — суєта і зло велике! | For there is such a man that his labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in fortitude; yet this man shall give his portion to one who has not laboured therein. This is also vanity and great evil. |

| Бо що буде мати людина від усіх трудів своїх і турботи серця свого, що трудиться вона під сонцем? | For it happens to a man in all his labour, and in the purpose of his heart wherein he labours under the sun. |

| Тому що всі дні її — скорботи, і труди її — неспокій; навіть і вночі серце її не знає спокою. І це — суєта! | For all his days are days of sorrows, and vexation of spirit is his; in the night also his heart rests not. This is also vanity. |
|

| Не підвладне людині і те благо, щоб їсти і пити й насолоджувати душу свою від труда свого. Я побачив, що і це — від руки Божої; | A man has nothing really good to eat, and to drink, and to shew his soul as good in his trouble. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. |
|

| тому що хто може їсти і хто може насолоджуватися без Нього? | For who shall eat, or who shall drink, without him? |

| Бо людині, яка є доброю перед лицем Його, Він дає мудрість і знання і радість; а грішнику дає турботу збирати і накопичувати, щоб потім віддати тому, хто добрий перед лицем Божим. І це — суєта і томління духу! | For God has given to the man who is good in his sight, wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but he has given to the sinner trouble, to add and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God; for this is also vanity and waywardness of spirit. |
