| На все це я звернув серце моє для дослідження, що праведні й мудрі і діяння їхні — у руці Божій, і що людина ні любови, ні ненависти не знає у всьому тому, що перед нею. | I saw that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: yea, there is no man that knows either love or hatred, though all are before their face. |

| Усьому й усім — одне: одна доля праведнику і нечестивому, доброму і [злому], чистому і нечистому, тому, хто приносить жертву і хто не приносить жертви; як доброчесному, так і грішнику; як тому, хто клянеться, так і тому, хто боїться клятви. | Vanity is in all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good, and to the bad; both to the pure, and to the impure; both to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifices not: as is the good, so is the sinner: as is the swearer, even so is he that fears an oath. |

| Це ж бо і погано в усьому, що чиниться під сонцем, що одна доля всім, і серце синів людських сповнене зла, і безумство в серці їх, у житті їх; а після того вони відходять до померлих. | There is this evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yea, the heart of the sons of men is filled with evil, and madness is in their heart during their life, and after that they go to the dead. |

| Хто знаходиться між живими, тому є ще надія, оскільки і псу живому краще, ніж мертвому леву. | For who is he that has fellowship with all the living? there is hope of him: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. |

| Живі знають, що помруть, а мертві нічого не знають, і вже нема їм відплати, тому що і пам’ять про них піддана забуттю, | For the living will know that they shall die: but the dead know nothing, and there is no longer any reward to them; for their memory is lost. |

| і любов їх і ненависть їх і ревнощі їх уже зникли, і нема їм більше частки повіки ні в чому, що відбувається під сонцем. | Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, have now perished; yea, there is no portion for them any more for ever in all that is done under the sun. |

| Отже, йди, їж з веселощами хліб твій, і пий у радості серця вино твоє, коли Бог благоволить до справ твоїх. | Go, eat thy bread with mirth, and drink thy wine with a joyful heart; for now God has favourably accepted thy works. |
|

| Нехай буде повсякчас одяг твій світлим, і нехай не зменшується єлей на голові твоїй. | Let thy garments be always white; and let not oil be wanting on thine head. |
|

| Насолоджуйся життям із дружиною, яку любиш, у всі дні суєтного життя твого, і яку дав тобі Бог під сонцем на всі суєтні дні твої; тому що це — доля твоя у житті й у трудах твоїх, якими ти трудишся під сонцем. | And see life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which are given thee under the sun: for that is thy portion in thy life, and in thy labour wherein thou labourest under the sun. |

| Усе, що може рука твоя робити, за силами роби; тому що у могилі, куди ти підеш, немає ні праці, ні роздумів, ні знання, ні мудрости. | Whatsoever thine hand shall find to do, do with all thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Hades whither thou goest. |

| І обернувся я, і бачив під сонцем, що не прудким дістається успішний біг, не хоробрим — перемога, не мудрим — хліб, і не розумним — багатство, і не майстерним — прихильність, але час і випадок для всіх них. | I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor yet wealth to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of knowledge; for time and chance will happen to them all. |

| Бо людина не знає свого часу. Як риби попадаються у пагубну сіть, і як птахи заплутуються у тенетах, так сини людські уловлюються в час біди, коли вона несподівано находить на них. | For surely man also knows not his time: as fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as birds that are caught in a snare; even thus the sons of men are snared at an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them. |

| Ось ще яку мудрість бачив я під сонцем, і вона здалася мені важливою: | This I also saw to be wisdom under the sun, and it is great before me: |

| місто невелике, і людей у ньому небагато; до нього підступив великий цар і обложив його і зробив проти нього великі облогові роботи; | suppose there were a little city, and few men in it; and there should come against it a great king, and surround it, and build great mounds against it; |

| але в ньому знайшовся мудрий бідняк, і він урятував своєю мудрістю це місто; й однак же ніхто не згадував про цю бідну людину. | and should find in it a poor wise man, and he should save the city through his wisdom: yet no man would remember that poor man. |

| І сказав я: мудрість краща за силу, й однак же, мудрість бідняка зневажається, і слів його не слухають. | And I said, Wisdom is better than power: yet the wisdom of the poor man is set at nought, and his words not listened to. |
|

| Слова мудрих, вимовлені спокійно, вислуховуються краще, ніж крик володаря між нерозумними. | The words of the wise are heard in quiet more than the cry of them that rule in folly. |
|

|
| Мудрість краща за військову зброю; але один, що згрішив, погубить багато доброго. | Wisdom is better than weapons of war: and one sinner will destroy much good. |
