| Добре ім’я краще за дорогу масть, і день смерти — за день народження. | A good name is better than good oil; and the day of death than the day of birth. |

| Краще ходити у дім плачу за мертвим, ніж ходити у дім бенкету; бо такий кінець усякої людини, і живий прикладе це до свого серця. | It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the banquet house: since this is the end of every man; and the living man will apply good warning to his heart. |

| Сумування краще за сміх; тому що при печалі лиця серце стає кращим. | Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart will be made better. |

|
| Серце мудрих — у домі плачу, а серце нерозумних — у домі веселощів. | The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth. |
|

|
| Краще слухати викривання від мудрого, ніж слухати пісні дурних; | It is better to hear a reproof of a wise man, than for a man to hear the song of fools. |
|

|
| тому що сміх нерозумних те саме, що тріскотіння тернового хмизу під казаном. І це — суєта! | As the sound of thorns under a caldron, so is the laughter of fools: this is also vanity. |

| Утискуючи інших, мудрий стає дурним, і подарунки псують серце. | For oppression makes a wise man mad, and destroys his noble heart. |

|
| Кінець справи краще за початок її; терплячий краще зарозумілого. | The end of a matter is better than the beginning thereof: the patient is better than the high-minded. |
|

|
| Не будь духом твоїм поспішним на гнів, тому що гнів гніздиться у серці нерозумних. | Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger will rest in the bosom of fools. |
|

|
| Не говори: «чому це минулі дні були кращими за нинішні?», тому що не від мудрости ти запитуєш про це. | Say not, What has happened, that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire in wisdom concerning this. |

| Гарна мудрість зі спадщиною, і особливо для тих, які бачать сонце: | Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and there is an advantage by it to them that see the sun. |
|

|
| тому що під сінню її те саме, що під сінню срібла; але перевага знання в тому, що мудрість дає життя тому, хто володіє нею. | For wisdom in its shadow is as the shadow of silver: and the excellence of the knowledge of wisdom will give life to him that has it. |
|

| Дивися на дію Божу: бо хто може випрямити те, що Він зробив кривим? | Behold the works of God: for who shall be able to straighten him whom God has made crooked? |
|

|
| У дні благополуччя користуйся благом, а у дні нещастя розмірковуй: те й інше створив Бог для того, щоб людина нічого не могла сказати проти Нього. | In the day of prosperity live joyfully, and consider in the day of adversity: consider, I say, God also has caused the one to agree with the other for this reason, that man should find nothing after him. |

| Усього надивився я у суєтні дні мої: праведник гине в праведності своїй; нечестивий живе довго у нечесті своєму. | I have seen all things in the days of my vanity: there is a just man perishing in his justice, and there is an ungodly man remaining in his wickedness. |

| Не будь занадто суворим, і не виставляй себе занадто мудрим; навіщо тобі губити себе? | Be not very just; neither be very wise: lest thou be confounded. |
|

| Не віддавайся гріху, і не будь безумним: навіщо тобі помирати не у свій час? | Be not very wicked; and be not stubborn: lest thou shouldest die before thy time. |
|

|
| Добре, якщо ти будеш триматися одного і не віднімати руки від іншого; тому що хто боїться Бога, той уникне всього того. | It is well for thee to hold fast by this; also by this defile not thine hand: for to them that fear God all things shall come forth well. |

| Мудрість робить мудрого сильнішим за десятьох володарів, які у місті. | Wisdom will help the wise man more than ten mighty men which are in the city. |
|

| Немає людини праведної на землі, яка робила б добро і не грішила б; | For there is not a righteous man in the earth, who will do good, and not sin. |
|

|
| тому не на всяке слово, яке говорять, звертай увагу, щоб не почути тобі раба твого, коли він лихословить на тебе; | Also take no heed to all the words which ungodly men shall speak; lest thou hear thy servant cursing thee. |
|

| бо серце твоє знає багато випадків, коли і сам ти лихословив на інших. | For many times he shall trespass against thee, and repeatedly shall he afflict thine heart; for thus also hast thou cursed others. |
|

| Усе це випробував я мудрістю; я сказав: «буду я мудрим»; але мудрість далека від мене. | All these things have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me. |
|

| Далеко те, що було, і глибоке — глибоко: хто осягне його? | That which is far beyond what was, and a great depth, who shall find it out? |
|

|
| Звернувся я серцем моїм до того, щоб пізнати, дослідити і знайти мудрість і розум, і пізнати нечестя глупоти, неуцтва і безумства, | I and my heart went round about to know, and to examine, and to seek wisdom, and the account of things, and to know the folly and trouble and madness of the ungodly man. |

| і знайшов я, що гіркіша за смерть жінка, тому що вона — сіть, і серце її — тенета, руки її — окови; добрий перед Богом спасеться від неї, а грішник буде впійманий нею. | And I find her to be, and I will pronounce to be more bitter than death the woman which is a snare, and her heart nets, who has a band in her hands: he that is good in the sight of God shall be delivered from her; but the sinner shall be caught by her. |

| Ось це знайшов я, сказав Екклезіаст, випробовуючи одне за іншим. | Behold, this have I found, said the Preacher, seeking by one at a time to find out the account, |

| Чого ще шукала душа моя, і я не знайшов? — Чоловіка одного з тисячі я знайшов, а жінки між усіма ними не знайшов. | which my soul sought after, but I found not: for I have found one man of a thousand; but a woman in all these I have not found. |
|

| Тільки це я знайшов, що Бог створив людину правою, а люди пустилися у безліч помислів. | But, behold, this have I found, that God made man upright; but they have sought out many devices. Who knows the wise? and who knows the interpretation of a saying? |
